  • Venezuela crisis: Maduro given ultimatum by European leaders

European powers have warned Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro that he must call elections or they will officially recognise the opposition’s claim of leadership.

Mr Maduro is under pressure after his rival Juan Guaidó declared himself “acting president” on Wednesday.

Several countries, including the US, already back Mr Guaidó as president.

Venezuela later rejected the ultimatum at a UN meeting, where divisions between world powers were laid bare.

Read: Trudeau fires Canada’s ambassador to China amid Huawei controversy

Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza told members of the UN Security Council in New York that Mr Maduro’s presidency was legitimate, and the country would not be pressured into calling elections.

“Nobody is going to give us deadlines or tell us if there are elections or not,” he said.

President Maduro was sworn in for a second term earlier this month after an election marred by an opposition boycott and allegations of vote-rigging, leading to large anti-Maduro protests.

He accuses Mr Guaidó, the head of the National Assembly, of mounting a coup.

On Saturday, permanent Security Council members France and the UK joined Germany, Spain and other European nations in what looked like a co-ordinated demand that elections be called in Venezuela within eight days.

An EU statement was more cautious, seeking fresh elections or the bloc would take “further actions, including on the issue of recognition of the country’s leadership”.

Speaking on behalf of the EU, UK Foreign Office Minister Sir Alan Duncan said Venezuela needed a government “that truly represents the will of the Venezuelan people”

Russia, a UN Security Council member, has said foreign support for Mr Guaidó violates international law and is a “direct path to bloodshed”. China, Mexico and Turkey have also publicly backed Mr Maduro.

Also on Saturday, Venezuela’s defence attache in Washington, Col José Luis Silva, said he now recognised Mr Guaidó as interim leader and that fresh elections were needed.

Read: Venezuela crisis: US vows to ‘disconnect’ Maduro’s funding

    What happened at the UN?
Discussions at the UN on Saturday were tense as nations clashed on how to resolve the crisis in Venezuela.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo accused Russia and China of “propping up a failed regime” and said it was time to “support the Venezuelan people immediately”.

“No more delays, no more games. Either you stand with the forces of freedom, or you’re in league with Maduro and his mayhem,” he said.

But Russia’s UN ambassador, Vassily Nebenzia, accused Washington of plotting a coup against Mr Maduro.

He said the council was not established to “support regime change” and called for further dialogue to “find a way forward”.

China’s representative to the UN, Ma Zhaoxu, said that while his country was committed to the “purposes and principles” of the council, the situation in Venezuela “does not constitute a threat to national security” and China “does not interfere in other countries’ internal affairs”.

    Why is Maduro being challenged?

He was re-elected to a second term last year – but the elections were controversial, with many opposition candidates barred from running or jailed.

The National Assembly argues that the presidential position is actually vacant because the election was unfair – and that under the constitution this means that Mr Guaidó, as head of the National Assembly, should take over as acting president instead.

Tens of thousands have held protests over Venezuela’s economic crisis – including an annual inflation rate that the opposition says reached 1,300,000% last year.

Mr Maduro has so far retained the support of the country’s military, but Mr Guaidó has asked them to “put themselves on the side of the Venezuelan people” and back him instead.

  • Hope fades for Brazil dam survivors

At least 34 people have been killed and about 300 others remain missing after a dam collapsed at an iron ore mine in south-eastern Brazil, officials say.

Rescue teams have been scouring the site near the town of Brumadinho, following Friday’s collapse.

It is not clear what caused the failure of the dam, owned by Vale, Brazil’s largest mining company.

Vale has had 6bn reais ($1.6bn; £1.2bn) frozen from its accounts to help fund recovery works and handle damages.

The rupture of the dam caused a sea of muddy sludge to bury the site’s cafeteria, where workers were eating lunch on Friday.

Read: Brazil dam collapse: Several killed and many missing in Brumadinho

On Saturday, emergency services used helicopters and earth-moving machinery in the search for survivors.

Some 50 people were rescued from the sludge and 23 people were taken to hospital, but Minas Gerais state governor Romeu Zema said the chances of finding more survivors were slim.

“We’re likely to just be recovering bodies,” he said, adding that “those involved in this tragedy should be punished”.

Relatives of the missing have been demanding information on their loved ones.

“My five-year-old nephew is asking me if his dad died. What do I tell him?” asked Olivia Rios.

President Jair Bolsonaro, who flew over the disaster area in a helicopter on Saturday, tweeted that it was hard not to get “emotional” after seeing the scale of the devastation.

He said he had accepted an offer by Israel to send search equipment that could find people buried in the mud.

Also on Saturday, Brazil’s Environmental Protection Agency (Ibama) issued Vale with an initial fine of 250m reais ($66.5m; £50m) in relation to the incident.

Authorities co-ordinating the rescue effort urged volunteers to stay away because of the dangerous conditions, while media organisations were asked not to use drones in order to avoid collisions with helicopters.

The collapse comes just over three years since a dam burst in Mariana, also in Minas Gerais, killing 19 people, in what was considered Brazil’s worst environmental disaster.

What do we know about the collapse?

The dam near Feijão iron ore mine burst its barrier at around 13:00 local time (15:00 GMT) on Friday, flooding another dam down below.

The torrent of sludge cut through the dam’s complex, nearby farms and the neighbourhood where many of the workers live, destroying houses and vehicles.

There are reports that the dam’s alarm system – which local residents had been trained to respond to – failed at the time of the accident.

But Vale president Fabio Schvartsman said the accident may have occurred too quickly for a siren which triggers security protocols to be activated.

Dozens of trapped people, many of them covered in mud, had to be evacuated by helicopter as roads were destroyed.

Many other residents have been evacuated as a safety measure.

“I’m anxious, I want news,” 28-year-old Helton Pereira told the BBC as he waited outside a hospital in nearby Belo Horizonte – his 28-year-old wife and 35-year-old sister worked at the dam’s cafeteria and were both missing.

“From now, the odds are minimal and it’s most likely we’ll recover only bodies,” Governor Zema said.

Built in 1976, the dam was one of several in the area and it was used to hold residue from the mine.

It had a capacity of 12m cubic metres and had been an inactive site for three years, Vale said.

    What happened in 2015?

On 5 November 2015, a dam – also owned by Vale, along with BHP Billiton – burst at a Samarco mine in Mariana.

More than 60m cubic metres – enough to fill 20,000 Olympic swimming pools – spilled over into the surrounding area.

After a lengthy court case, BHP Billiton and Vale reached a settlement worth at least 6.8bn reais ($1.8bn) with the Brazilian government.

  • Louisiana shootings: Five killed and suspect at large

Police in the US state of Louisiana are searching for a gunman suspected of killing five people, including his parents, in two separate but related shootings.

The shootings happened in the parishes of Ascension and Livingston, south of the state capital of Baton Rouge.

Authorities say 21-year-old Dakota Theriot fled in a stolen gray and silver Dodge Ram pick-up truck.

Ascension Parish Sheriff Bobby Webre said the man was “armed and dangerous”.

On Saturday morning local time, police were called to a trailer park in the city of Gonzales, 25 miles (40km) south of Baton Rouge, for a “domestic incident”, Sheriff Webre said.

When they arrived, they found two people – Elizabeth and Keith Theriot, both 51 years old -who had been shot but were still alive.

Read: Spain Totalán search: Body of missing boy found

They told the officers that their son, who had recently been told to leave their house and not return, was the shooter. The couple were taken to a hospital but later died.

“This is probably one of the worst domestic violence incidents I’ve seen in quite a while,” Sheriff Webre said.

The gunman first killed three other people in neighbouring Livingston Parish, according to reports.

The victims – who were not relatives of the suspect but knew him – have been named as Billy Ernest, 43; Summer Ernest, 20; and Tanner Ernest, 17.

Reports suggest Dakota Theriot was in a relationship with Summer.

Read: Guzmán trial: Drug lord tortured and murdered rivals, says witness

“My family met him last weekend at a birthday party and didn’t get good vibes from him,” Crystal DeYoung, Billy Ernest’s sister, told the Associated Press news agency.

She said Summer and Tanner were two of Billy’s three children.

It is suspected that the alleged gunman stole the vehicle from the family and was headed to the neighbouring state of Mississippi.

In a Facebook page that appeared to belong to him, there was a repost made in June saying “wish i could clear my mind jus for one day” (sic) with a sad emoji.

In May, he reposted a message which said “If you have a problem with me, tell me. Not everyone else.”

The suspect is wanted for first-degree murder, illegal use of weapons and home invasion.

  • Kwabena Yeboah kicks against KP Boateng’s return to the Black Stars

President of the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG), Kwabena Yeboah has kicked against suggestions by a section of Ghanaians calling for Kevin Prince Boateng’s inclusion into the Black Stars.

The 31-year-old is under indefinite suspension from national duties, he was sacked from camp alongside Sulley Muntari during the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil after it was alleged that he verbally assaulted head coach James Kwesi Appiah.

KP Boateng last Monday night completed a shock transfer from Sassuolo to the Spanish giants Barcelona, becoming the first Ghanaian and 14th African in the Catalan club’s rich history.

He joined on a 6-month loan with an option to buy for 8 million euros.

The move has necessitated calls for him to be included in the National team set up as the Black Stars prepares to break a 37 jinx at AFCON 2019.

This Kwabena Yeboah, as affectionately called “the writer” believes, it is not a wise move as the player in question is an opportunist who only decides to play in tournaments that are favourable to him.

He, however, sent a note of caution to coach Kwesi Appiah that, although football centres on togetherness, he should not make a mistake of inviting the Barcelona signee.

“People forget that if you constituting a team, it is not about how best you can play alone but you need collective discipline. There is no way I would say Kevin Prince Boateng should be called upon again”.

“Sulley Muntari has always been faithful to the National team but has never turned his back on us, perhaps his temperament will be the problem. However, I will vouch for Sulley Muntari and forgo K.P Boateng.” Kwabena Yeboah said on Joy FM.

The Dzamefe Commission of enquiry proposed that Sulley and Boateng be invited into the Black Stars if they apologize for their conduct at Brazil 2014.

Sulley Muntari has issued an apology but Kevin Prince Boateng is yet to.

  • Nanung deserves a substantive Overlord – Concerned Citizens

Government’s ability to solve the Dagbang chieftaincy matters has emboldened a group calling itself the Concerned Citizens of Nanung in collaboration with the Local Mediation Team to plead with government to turn its attention to the Nanung Traditional Area where there are similar challenges.

The group’s President, Issahaku Ben Hussein said government’s unprecedented record of bringing lasting peace to Dagbang should be replicated in the Nanung Traditional Area.

He raised the concern in an interview with Abdul Karim Naatogmah following the performance of funerals of the late two Yaa-Naa’s and the subsequent peaceful enskinment of His Royal Majesty, Yaa-Naa Abukari Mahama II as the new King of Dagbang.

He attributed the area’s underdevelopment to the absence of peace and a substantive Chief there, hence the renewed call on government to take quick action.

“As the Concerned Citizens of Nanung, we are very happy about the tactful manner government handled the Dagbang chieftaincy matters. Government must turn its attention and do all it can to solve the Nanung Traditional Area Chieftaincy dispute.”

According to him, there remained some unresolved issues in connection with the Nanung Namship despite the Supreme Court’s ruling that the late Naa Andani Dasana II was the legitimate Bimbilla Naa.

Issahaku Ben Hussein said the funerals of the late Naa Andani II and Nakpaa-Naa Salifu Dawuni should be performed without further delay.

This is his estimation will pave the way for the nomination and enskinment of a substantive Bimbilla Naa who will be acceptable to all.

He held the position that the composition and the role of the Kingmakers in Nanung must be clearly defined to forestall any unforeseen circumstances leading to the nomination and enskinment of a substantive Bimbilla-Lana.

Out of nine Kingmakers, he explained that the Kpatihi-Naa and the Jo-Naa are the final deciders.

Former Ghana coach Sellas Tetteh has urged Ghanaians to support Jimmy Cobblah and his Black Satellites ahead of the 2019 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations holding in Niger next month.

After three preparatory friendly games for the tournament, Cobblah’s charges failed to avoid defeats, prompting him to name a final squad with several new faces.

The development has raised doubts among a section of Ghanaians but Tetteh, who won the U-20 Afcon and U-20 World Cup title for the country in 2009, believes the team can achieve their target at the upcoming tournament.

“Ghanaians should not be discouraged by the results in the friendly games played by the Black Satellites,” Tetteh told Atinka FM.

  • Trudeau fires Canada’s ambassador to China amid Huawei controversy

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has fired Canada’s ambassador to China, John McCallum.

It follows controversial comments Mr McCallum made about an extradition case involving a senior executive from the Chinese telecoms giant Huawei.

Mr Trudeau said in a statement he had asked John McCallum to step down, but did not offer a reason.

Read: Man kicked off Canada plane over ‘sleeping pill’

The detention of Meng Wanzhou, at the request of the US, angered China and soured Canada’s relations with Beijing.

Ms Meng, Huawei’s chief financial officer, is accused by the US of evading sanctions on Iran. Both she and Huawei deny those allegations.

In a statement Mr Trudeau said: “Last night I asked for and accepted John McCallum’s resignation as Canada’s ambassador to China.”

Read: Nafta: US and Canada reach new trade deal

He said the veteran diplomat had served Canadians honourably and with distinction with many positions in cabinet, and thanked him and his family for their service.

Mr McCallum caused controversy on Tuesday when he publicly argued that the US extradition request for Ms Meng was seriously flawed.

The next day he issued a statement saying that he “misspoke” and regretted that his comments had created “confusion”.

But on Friday he was quoted as saying it would be “great for Canada” if the US dropped the request.

Ms Meng’s case has led to rising diplomatic tensions between Canada and China.

Earlier this month, a Canadian man was sentenced to death in China after a court said a jail term of 15 years was too lenient.

Two other Canadians were arrested following the detention of Ms Meng.

Some China analysts believe that the arrests were a tit-for-tat response to her detention, a claim Chinese officials have denied.

Meanwhile, US prosecutors are expected to file a formal extradition request with Canada soon.

China’s foreign ministry has urged US officials to withdraw the arrest order and refrain from moving ahead with the extradition request.

Ms Meng was released on bail by a Canadian court last month.

  • 2 powerful NDC politicians slept with me without pay – Dzidzor Mensah

It seems former HIV/AIDS ambassador, Joyce Dzidzor Mensah, has revived her controversies in 2019. In a new post sighted by YEN.com.gh on her Facebook page, Dzidzor claimed that two powerful NDC politicians slept with her and refused to pay her for it.

According to her, one of them had five rounds of sex with her in which “I gave you all my styles” yet she was never paid.

She revealed that they both enjoyed that session, as she did with the other powerful NDC man she also slept with.

Dzidzor, however, refused to mention the names of the NDC men she was talking about because “they still occupy important positions”.

She added that they slept with her without protection knowing very well that she was serving as HIV/AIDS ambassador. Dzidzor said she was in no way blackmailing anyone with her post, just that she wanted to get her “HIV money” from them.

According to her, these NDC men also conspired and sabotaged a meeting she had with Bill Gates after her visa had been processed and her first class ticket to Tokyo was ready.

“Two very powerful Top NDC politicians who had sex with me. This message goes to you. I still respect you because of your important positions so I will not mention your names for now.”

“But the same way you people conspired and sabotaged my meeting with Bill gate after my visa was processed and my first class ticket sent to me to fly to Tokyo, that is the same way I will do to you if you are still behaving this way,” Dzidzor threatened.

  • London Pride beers sold to Japanese firm

Fuller’s, the brewer whose beers include London Pride, is to sell its entire drinks business to Japan’s biggest brewer Asahi.

The £250m deal also includes cider and soft drinks brand Cornish Orchards, and craft cask brewer Dark Star.

Fuller’s said the deal would preserve the Griffin Brewery in Chiswick, west London, where beer has been brewed since 1654.

Asahi is the owner of the Peroni and Grolsch brands.

Fuller’s will now focus on its hotels and pubs chain, which generates 87% of its profits.

Read: China gives Cameroon US$78m out of US$5.7bn total debt

Its shares jumped 22% after the surprise deal, which it blamed on “structural changes to the beer industry”.

As a mid-sized brewer, Fuller’s said it was being squeezed between the global brewers and the 2,000 smaller brewers across the UK.

The Campaign for Real Ale (Camra) said it was a “sad day” for the industry.

Fuller’s is forming an alliance with Asahi to enable its pubs and hotels to continue to sell the beers and ciders.

Simon Emeny, chief executive of Fuller’s, said: “The deal secures the future of both part of our business including protecting the heritage of the Griffin Brewery in Chiswick, which was particularly important to the Fuller’s board”.

While the Griffin Brewery dates back to the era of Oliver Cromwell, the business – full name Fuller, Smith & Turner – was formally created in 1845.

    ‘Buying spree’

Neil Wilson, chief markets analyst at Markets.com, said: “Punters won’t notice much difference at the bar. Pubs may be closing at a hell of a clip these days but consumers still want experiences and dining out is one of those.

“Therefore investing in pubs and hotels is essential as consumers demand more from their pub experience.”

He said the deal was well timed because of the fall in the pound.

“Right now with the pound still very undervalued it looks to be a good time to swoop. The Japanese firm has been gobbling up brewers across Europe and elsewhere on major buying spree.”

Analysis: Little space at the bar
By Katie Prescott, BBC Radio 4 Today business presenter

Like the ravens leaving the Tower of London is how one commentator described the sale of London Pride to Asahi.

But while there may be an emotional significance, drinkers are unlikely to notice a change to the branding or formula in the pub. The two companies have signed a long-term strategic alliance and Asahi has committed to supporting the UK breweries behind Fuller’s brands.

Fuller’s plans to focus its attention on its pubs and hotels where it makes 87% of its profits.

It says that tax breaks given to microbrewers and the power of the big global drinks firms has left little space at the bar for those in the middle.

It’s giving some of the proceeds to shareholders and its pension fund, and with a 22% rise in its share price this morning investors are certainly clinking glasses at the deal.

Read: Minnesota mosque attack: ‘White Rabbits’ militiamen plead guilty

Asahi has already expanded in Europe by buying the Peroni, Grolsch, Meantime and Pilsner Urquell brands.

Akiyoshi Koji, chief executive of Asahi, said the Fuller’s brands would complement its existing brands in the UK. “In particular, London Pride is a fantastic brand with a illustrious heritage dating back to the 1950s”.

Asahi will continue to brew at the Griffin Brewery and is already a supplier to Fuller’s hotels and 400 or so managed and tenanted pubs in London and the South East.

Fuller’s also issued a trading update, which Mr Emeny described as “very good”, adding he was “particularly pleased” with sales at its managed pubs and hotels over the key Christmas and New Year period.

Like-for-like sales – which strip out new openings – at its managed pubs and hotels rose by 4.7% over the 42 weeks to 19 January, whereas beer and cider volumes were flat.

Mr Emeny is the first chief executive of the business not to have come from one of the founding families, taking over in 2013. A large proportion of the shares is still owned by descendents of the founding families.

Jackie Parker, chair of Camra, said she was concerned that consolidation was “seldom beneficial for consumers”.

“Fuller’s has been a family brewer in Britain for more than a hundred years, and it’s a very sad day to see such a well-known, historic and respected name exit the brewing business.

“While the Fuller’s family has stressed it has sought to protect the heritage of the Griffin Brewery, we’d call on the new owners to pledge to continue brewing operations at the Chiswick site.”

  • Monaco suspends Thierry Henry after only three months as coach

After a stellar playing career that saw him win countless club and international honours, Thierry Henry’s hopes of enjoying a managerial golden touch suffered an ignominious start after his suspension on Thursday as Monaco coach.

Henry was removed from his coaching duties after he failed to spark a change in fortunes at the struggling club, who are second-from bottom in Ligue 1 and facing relegation not even two years after beating moneybags Paris Saint-Germain to the league title and reaching the semi-finals of the Champions League.

With the sack waiting around the corner it’s a disastrous end to a first job in the dugout for Henry, who left his home country in 1999 a World Cup winner and went on to win a host of titles at Arsenal and Barcelona before retiring as a player just over four years ago.

Read: Australian Open 2019: Naomi Osaka beats Petra Kvitova to win title

The 41-year-old was one of the greatest players of his generation, the all-time leading goal-scorer for both Arsenal and the French national team and a Champions League winner with Barca.

Henry returned to Monaco, where he began his playing career, after impressing Belgium’s players as an attacking coach during the country’s run to last year’s World Cup semi-finals — where they lost to France.

He had been combining that role with an extremely well remunerated punditry job in England for Sky, where he didn’t hold back in expressing his opinions — Henry was vocal in worrying about the direction Arsenal were taking towards the end of his mentor Arsene Wenger’s long reign.

“Over the last four years I have had some extremely rewarding coaching experiences in football. These experiences have only made me more determined to fulfil my long term ambition to become a football manager,” Henry wrote on Twitter this summer after he quit his pundit job.

    Disappointment

However any ambitions Henry might have had on the Arsenal job will have to be put on hold following his miserable three-month spell in charge of Monaco, during which time they won just two league matches, finished bottom of their Champions League group and were knocked out of the French Cup by second-tier Metz.

Born in the Paris suburbs to parents from the French Caribbean islands of Guadeloupe and Martinique, Henry made his debut with Monaco in 1994, aged 17.

His full France debut came aged 20 in 1997, and the following year he scored three goals as Les Bleus won the World Cup as hosts.

Read: Alysa Liu, 13, becomes youngest US national figure skating champion

Henry also won Euro 2000 with his country and scored 51 goals in 123 appearances, although his international career ended in unhappy circumstances.

After his controversial handball against Ireland secured qualification for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, Henry and France were knocked out in the group stage in a campaign marred by a player mutiny.

But nothing can sour his reputation at Arsenal, whom he joined in 1999 after a brief stint at Juventus. He scored 228 goals for the Gunners, notably starring in the “Invincibles” team that won the league unbeaten in 2004.

After leaving Arsenal in 2007, he had three years at Barcelona capped by winning the Champions League under Pep Guardiola in 2009, before finishing his career in MLS in the United States.

His first stint as a manager has not reached those heights and he will surely be sacked in the coming days as the struggling side desperately seek to beat the drop.

  • Jean Wyllys: Gay Brazil politician will not return over death threats

A gay Brazilian politician has said he will not return to the country after receiving death threats.

Jean Wyllys, one of the country’s few openly gay congressmen, told a newspaper he had been powerless as his reputation was “destroyed by lies”.

He said violence in Brazil had worsened since the election of far-right President Jair Bolsonaro last year.

Mr Bolsonaro has vowed to tackle corruption and crime but has also made racist and homophobic remarks.

However in his inauguration speech earlier this month he promised to build a “society without discrimination or division”.

Mr Wyllys’ left-wing Party for Socialism and Liberty (PSOL) said he would be replaced in Congress by David Miranda, a member of the Rio de Janeiro city council who is also gay and is married to Pulitzer prize-winning US journalist Glenn Greenwald.

In his interview with Folha de Sao Paulo newspaper, Mr Wyllys, 44, said he had been targeted by defamatory social media campaigns and the threats against him had spread to members of his family.

People had been shoving him in the street despite the presence of his bodyguards, he said, and he was tired of living under protection since the murder of Marielle Franco, another PSOL member.

She was shot dead in Rio de Janeiro last March.

“It was not Bolsonaro’s election itself. It was the level of violence that has increased since he was elected,” he said.

In a tweet, he said: “Preserving threatened life is also a strategy for fighting for better days.”

Mr Wyllys – who rose to fame after winning the Brazilian version of reality TV show Big Brother – said he had made the decision to move abroad after reports that Mr Bolsonaro’s son Flavio had employed relatives of a former police officer who is suspected of involvement in Ms Franco’s death.

He is currently travelling in Europe and told Folha that his intention was to find a place to study for a PhD.

“I think this political violence in our country now will pass. Perhaps in the future I’ll return to this. There are so many other ways to fight for the cause that aren’t institutional,” he said.

  • Brazil dam collapse: Several killed and many missing in Brumadinho

A dam collapse at an iron-ore mine in southeast Brazil has left at least seven people dead and some 150 others missing, officials say.

The break caused a sea of muddy sludge to spread across rural areas of Brumadinho, in Minas Gerais state, burying buildings and vehicles.

Emergency teams rescued scores of trapped people by helicopter.

The accident comes just over three years since a dam burst in another town in Minas Gerais, killing 19 people.

Many of the missing are workers who were having lunch in the dam’s cafeteria which was buried by the sludge.

Read: Spain Totalán search: Body of missing boy found

It is not clear what caused the dam – owned by Brazil’s largest mining company, Vale – to break.

What do we know so far?
The dam near Feijão iron ore mine burst its barrier at around lunchtime local time on Friday, flooding another dam down below.

Built in 1976, the dam was one of several in the area and it was used to hold residue from the mine
It had capacity for 12m cubic metres and had been an inactive site for three years, according to Vale. It is not yet known how much waste was released.

Leaked tailings from the mine spread into the nearby community of Vila Forteco, close to Brumadinho.

Residents in low-lying areas have been evacuated, many of them by helicopter.

“We do not have more details because everything is happening very fast,” Brumadinho Mayor Avimar de Melo said.

“Our main worry now is to quickly find out where the missing people are,” he told television channel GloboNews.

Some 100 rescuers are searching for the missing with 100 more expected to join them on Saturday.

On Twitter, President Jair Bolsonaro called it a “serious tragedy” and said he would visit the region on Saturday.

The ministers for the environment, mines and energy, and regional development were travelling to the scene.

    What does the company say?
Vale chief executive Fabio Schvartsman called it an “enormous tragedy”.

He said a German company had been hired to assess the dam and that the last report from September indicated that it was stable.

Some 300 Vale employees were in the area at the time of the accident and 100 have been accounted for so far, he added.

Read: Zimbabwe’s violent crackdown continues with reports of rapes

The firm has said it was monitoring all its other dams for any risk of collapse.

    Has this ever happened before?
On 5 November 2015, a dam – also owned by Vale, along with BHP Billiton – burst at a Samarco mine in Mariana, in Minas Gerais.

More than 60m cubic metres – enough to fill 20,000 Olympic swimming pools – spilled over into the surrounding area.

The incident is considered Brazil’s worst environmental disaster.

After a lengthy court case, BHP Billiton and Vale reached a settlement worth at least 6.8bn reais ($1.8bn) with the Brazilian government.

  • Spain Totalán search: Body of missing boy found

Rescuers in Spain have found the body of a two-year-old boy who fell into a borehole near the southern city of Málaga, officials say.

The boy, named Julen, disappeared into a narrow well more than 100m (330ft) deep during a family outing on 13 January.

Specialist teams worked day and night in a tunnel that had been dug parallel to the narrow borehole.

The body was found in the early hours of Saturday morning.

“At 01:25 (00:25 GMT), the rescue teams reached the area of the well where they were looking for Julen and they found the lifeless body of the little one,” said Alfonso Rodriguez Gomez de Celis, the central government representative in the region of Andalusia.

Read: Tens of thousands rally against ‘Invasion Day’ in Australia

The accident happened during a Sunday afternoon excursion in a hilly plantation near the village of Totalán.

The borehole – only 25cm (10in) in diameter – had apparently been left uncovered, although the businessman who had originally had it dug a month earlier insisted that he had sealed it.

Such shafts are dug in the hope of extracting water or oil.

Rescuers had found hair among debris removed from the well and compared it with DNA samples from the boy’s drinking bottle as well as his family, confirming his identity.

A small bag of sweets was sent down the hole, tracked by a camera, but at 73m (240ft) the camera encountered an earth blockage in the shaft.

Rescuers had not picked up any hopeful sign from the boy during the whole operation.

Julen’s parents José and Victoria have experienced tragedy before.

Residents of El Palo, a nearby district, say the couple’s three-year-old son, Oliver, died suddenly less than two years ago because of a heart problem.

  • Australian Open 2019: Naomi Osaka beats Petra Kvitova to win title

Japan’s Naomi Osaka beat Czech Petra Kvitova in a seesaw Australian Open final to win back-to-back Grand Slams and become the new world number one.

The US Open winner, 21, missed three championship points in the second set but regrouped to win 7-6 (7-2) 5-7 6-4.

The fourth seed broke for 2-1 in the decider, then served out to clinch victory in Melbourne.

Eighth seed Kvitova, 28, was bidding for her first major title since being stabbed in a knife attack.

The two-time Wimbledon champion, who said she was fortunate to be alive after the incident in December 2016, showed resilience to take the match into a third set as momentum swung from side to side.

Victory seemed to be inevitable for Osaka before Kvitova broke back for 5-5 on her way to winning 12 points in a row to lead for the first time since the start of the second set.

However, Osaka regained focus to take a decisive advantage in the decider, going on to replicate American Jennifer Capriati’s achievement of winning her first two Grand Slams back to back.

She missed a fourth championship point with a long return, but took the fifth when Kvitova hit a forehand wide.

A smiling Osaka dropped to her haunches on the baseline before returning to her chair and covering her face in shock as she savoured the moment.

Osaka, who replaces Simona Halep at the top of the rankings after the Romanian’s 48-week stint, becomes the first Asian player to be world number one.

She is also the youngest to hold top spot since Denmark’s Caroline Wozniacki, then aged 20, took the ranking in 2010.

  • Nigeria opposition party halts campaign over judge’s suspension

Nigeria’s main opposition party has suspended its presidential election campaign for 72 hours in protest at the suspension of the country’s most senior judge by President Muhammadu Buhari, it said.

The president on Friday said he had suspended chief justice of Nigeria (CJN) Walter Onnoghen who has been asked to appear before a tribunal over allegations of breaching asset-declaration rules.

Read: Right-thinking Nigerians agree with my criticisms of the Buhari gov’t – Obasanjo

Onnoghen has not responded to the charges and his lawyers say the tribunal does not have the authority to try him.

“President Muhammadu Buhari has unleashed despotism on our nation. We reject this in totality,” Kola Ologbodiyan, spokesperson of the main opposition People’s Democractic Party, told Al Jazeera.

“We will ask Nigerians to resist this resort to self-help by President Buhari.

“It is clear, and manifestly too, that Nigerians have reached a consensus on the rejection of President Buhari.

“Buhari has seen his failure ahead of the polls and is determined to push our nation into the abyss of dictatorship. We resist this! We will deploy every measure under our laws,” Ologbodiyan said.

Buhari, who was a military ruler in the 1980s and voted into office in 2015, is seeking a fresh term in an election scheduled to take place on February 16. At stake is control of Africa’s top crude oil producer and one of the continent’s biggest economies.

Nigeria’s judiciary has helped resolve electoral disputes after past votes, some of which have been marred by violence and vote rigging. The chief justice could preside over a disputed election result.

“In the first instance, we are suspending our campaign for 72 hours. It is our hope that President Buhari will listen to the voice of all lovers of democracy the world over and restore democracy in Nigeria immediately and without qualifications,” the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) said in a statement.

  • Tens of thousands rally against ‘Invasion Day’ in Australia

Tens of thousands of people rallied across Australia calling for the abolition of the January 26 national holiday in protests showing a deep division over a festivity intended to celebrate the birth of modern Australia.

While Australia Day marks the anniversary of the 1788 arrival of the “First Fleet” of British ships at Sydney Cove, many indigenous Australians, who trace their lineage on the continent back 50,000 years, regard it as “Invasion Day”.

Australia: Protests for and against immigrants (1:48) “Today marks the start of colonisation and the start of the genocide,” said Jayden Riley, 17, who was marching in Sydney on Saturday in a singlet in the black, yellow, and red colours of the Aboriginal flag.

“It is not about refusing to celebrate being Australian. This day represents more than just being Australian to our people. My Nan’s stolen generation, for example, she was taken from her family and brainwashed to be a Catholic.”

At a rally in Sydney stretched along more than half a dozen city blocks, about 5,000 protesters chanted, “Always was and always will be Aboriginal land” and “No pride in genocide.”

Protests attended by several thousand people took place in Melbourne, Canberra and other Australian cities.

    ‘Pain and suffering’

Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s right-leaning government, which faces a general election due in May, opposes any change to the holiday.

Attending official celebrations and a citizenship ceremony in Canberra, Morrison said it is idealism and enlightenment, not cruelty and dispossession that have prevailed in the country.

“These great ideas are the foundation of our modern Australia, and they have transformed us into this most recent chapter of our great story – the one we write together,” Morrison told crowds in the capital.

Australia’s 700,000 or so indigenous people track near the bottom of its 25 million citizens in almost every economic and social indicator.

“This country stops for a horse race, it stops for an AFL (Australia Football League) grand final, it stops for the Queen’s birthday and it stops for an Anzac service and we don’t have ever a time where this country stands still to reflect on first peoples of this country and the pain and suffering we’ve endured since colonisation,” Lidia Thorpe, an Aboriginal former member of parliament, was quoted as saying by the ABC News.

  • LPG poised to break NPP, NDC duopoly in Ayawaso by-election

The parliamentary candidate of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) for the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency by-election, Mr Clement Boadi, has promised pulling a shocker in the upcoming poll.

According to him, the time had come to break the jinx of the political duopoly that had characterised the outcome of elections in the area over the years.

Read: Youth group threatens to stop Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election

Speaking in an interview with the Daily Graphic, Mr Boadi posited that over the years, there had been an alternation of power between the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in a manner that had not benefited the people.

    Breaking the duopoly

He said: “I am in here to break that duopoly because the NPP and NDC have taken Ghanaians for granted for too long.”

Mr Boadi has, therefore, urged the constituents to come out in their numbers and vote for him stressing “I will urge everybody to come out in their numbers and vote for me. People should not think that this will only be a contest between the two big parties who have taken us for granted for too long but they should bring about change by coming out in their numbers and voting for me.”

Read: Thank you for the massive support; Ayawaso West Wuogon is grateful Nana B

He believes that the strongest signal that the constituents could send to the two big parties that had taken them for granted over the years was to come out in their numbers and vote for him.

Espousing his vision for the constituency, he said the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency had a lot of potential that could be harnessed for better development than what it had witnessed so far.

Read: NDC Youth Wing mobilizes youth for Ayawaso West Wuogon victory

For example, he said, the constituency could boast of strong tertiary institutions and people with strong academic backgrounds.

“Basically, one cannot say the constituency lacks much in terms of development but the missing link is someone who would be easily accessible and capable of harnessing the abundant resources of the constituency to a higher level,” he pointed out.

    A servant for the constituency

What the constituency needs, more importantly, he said, was someone who had the inherent ability to articulate their concerns in Parliament explaining that “for me, the constituency needs a servant to do their bidding.”

One key challenge facing the constituency, he said, was security saying many people had time and again made calls for the security of the area to be enhanced so that people could go about their duties without fear.

“So that people can retire to bed and sleep peacefully because they know they are secured and would not fall victim to some criminal activities that have been taking place in the area for some time now,” he said.

His vision, therefore, is to work to enhance the security of the area by ensuring the formation of community watchdog groups, and also see to it that community policing is given top priority.

For the youth, his vision is to put up a skills training centre to boost entrepreneurial development to make the youth economically independent where no one who will complete tertiary institution will look up to the government for employment.

    Entrepreneurial development

“My policy direction is that in addition to acquiring academic degrees, the youth should also have skills that can be used to complement their academic qualification so that they will benefit from an enhanced combination of the two,” he indicated.

“I will be creating a centre where we can train the youth to acquire those necessary skills for them to make meaningful contribution not only to the development of the constituency but the nation as a whole,” he stressed.

Among other things, Mr Boadi said in terms of talents, he had discovered certain areas such as Bawaleshie where he would construct an astro turf to identify and enhance the talents of the youth within that area.

  • Guzmán trial: Drug lord tortured and murdered rivals, says witness

Mexican drug kingpin Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán personally tortured and murdered his rivals, his former bodyguard has said at a trial in New York.

In the most gruesome testimony to date, Isaias Valdez Rios described seeing “El Chapo” brutally beat at least three men before shooting them.

Guzmán denies charges including trafficking and money laundering. If guilty, he could be jailed for life.

The ex-boss of the Sinaloa cartel was held in 2016 after escaping from jail.

He used a tunnel to leave the prison in Mexico but was arrested five months later and extradited to the US in 2017.

Read: The week South Africans were stunned by Agrizzi’s corruption testimony

“El Chapo”, aged 61 and facing 17 charges, stared impassively in court during Thursday’s testimony by his ex-bodyguard, correspondents say.

The trial, which opened last November amid high security, is expected to last about four months.

Prosecutors say the Sinaloa cartel is the biggest supplier of drugs to the US.

    What did the bodyguard say?

Mr Valdez Rios told the court he had personally witnessed “El Chapo” murder three members of rival drug cartels.

In one incident, he said two people originally from Sinaloa who had joined the rival Los Zetas cartel were deemed traitors and rounded up by Guzmán’s hitmen.

For more than three hours the drug lord brutally beat them, the witness said.

“They were completely like rag dolls – their bones were totally broken. They could not move. And Joaquin was still hitting them with the branch and his weapon too,” Mr Valdez Rios said.

The two men were later driven to an area where they could see a large bonfire.

There, the jury was told, “El Chapo” cursed each one before shooting them in the head with his rifle.

The leader of the Sinaloa cartel ordered that they be thrown in the bonfire, telling his men that he did not want any bones to remain, the former bodyguard said.

The third man murdered by “El Chapo” was a member of the Arellano Felix cartel.

Read: Nigeria president ‘sacks’ acting chief judge

“He had burns made with an iron on his back, his shirt was stuck to his skin. He had burns made with a car lighter all over his body. His feet were burned,” the witness said.

The man was then locked in a wooden structure for days. It was only then that the man was brought blindfolded with his hands and legs tied to a graveyard.

“El Chapo” started to interrogate him, and while he was responding, shot him with his handgun.

The man was still gasping for air – but he was dumped in a hole and buried alive, Mr Valdez Rios said.

The witness also said that he had himself narrowly avoided being killed because at one point the drug lord suspected him of stealing his money.

Mr Valdez Rios, 39, has been held in a US jail since his arrest in 2014.

A former member of Mexico’s special forces, he began working for “El Chapo” in the early 2000s.

He faces a long prison sentence on drug trafficking charges. By co-operating with prosecutors, he hopes to see his sentence reduced.

  • Zimbabwe’s violent crackdown continues with reports of rapes

A violent crackdown continued Friday in Zimbabwe as rights groups alleged that women had been raped during house-to-house searches, while the government criticized a report by its own rights commission that said security forces had used “systematic torture.”

Zimbabweans say abuses have not calmed since President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Tuesday denounced the violence as “unacceptable.” The unrest began last week as people protested a steep increase in fuel prices that made gasoline the world’s most expensive. The government accuses the opposition of stirring up trouble.

The army asserts that uniformed perpetrators of abuses are “bogus elements” out to tarnish its image.

Read: Zimbabwe’s Finance Minister defends painful reforms

Fearful residents in poor and working-class suburbs of the capital, Harare, and second city, Bulawayo, are locking themselves in at night. At least 12 people have been killed in the unrest and more than 300 wounded, scores with gunshot wounds, doctors and rights workers have said.

“We have received very disturbing reports of a number of cases of women allegedly raped by members of security forces,” said Dewa Mavhinga, southern Africa director for Human Rights Watch. He added: “Beatings, harassment and other abuses have continued after Mnangagwa’s return and there are no clear actions from the government to hold accountable those committing the abuses.”

Police spokeswoman Charity Charamba said she had not received any reports of rape.

Justice Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi said a critical report earlier this week by the Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission, a constitutional body, was not based on “thorough investigation” and did not cover the “two most anarchical days” of last week’s unrest.

Those with complaints should report them to the police or to military police, he said.

Meanwhile, vendors in the city center were being routinely rounded up by the military, beaten and dumped at police stations, human rights lawyer Doug Coltart said.

Read: Zimbabwe troops accused of ‘systematic torture’ of protesters

Dozens of civil society leaders, opposition figures and activists have gone into hiding, fearing for their lives, Amnesty International said in a statement. It noted reported rapes, “lethal force” against protesters and the targeting of health workers who treat victims.

“Children as young as 11 years old have been detained on frivolous charges,” said Deprose Muchena, Amnesty’s southern Africa director. “The authorities must immediately stop this merciless crackdown.”

Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights said arrests of suspected protesters continued, with many denied bail.

On Friday the High Court in Harare said it would rule on Tuesday on an application by well-known activist and pastor Evan Mawarire to be released on bail. He has been held for a week and is charged with subversion, which carries a 20-year prison sentence. He is accused of inciting the unrest online. His lawyer rejects the allegations.

He made just five unforced errors and hit 29 winners on Rod Laver Arena.

“It is definitely one of the best matches I’ve ever had on this court,” said the 14-time major winner.

“Everything worked how I imagined it before the match – it was a tough one for Lucas.”

Djokovic, is aiming for a seventh Australian Open crown, which would move him clear of Roy Emerson and Roger Federer in terms of all-time victories in Melbourne.

Nadal, who would trail Federer by two if he wins his 18th major, could become the first man to claim a second career Grand Slam in the Open era.

  • Queen urges UK to find common ground as Brexit crisis deepens

Queen Elizabeth II has urged Britons to seek a “common ground” in remarks widely interpreted as an appeal to resolve the crisis over the United Kingdom’s departure from the European Union.

With the clock ticking down to March 29, the date set in law for Brexit, the UK is in its deepest political crisis in half a century as it grapples with how, or even whether, to exit the European alliance it joined in 1973.

While Elizabeth, 92, did not mention Brexit explicitly in a speech to her local Women’s Institute in Norfolk on Thursday, the monarch said every generation faced “fresh challenges and opportunities”.

“As we look for new answers in the modern age, I for one prefer the tried and tested recipes, like speaking well of each other and respecting different points of view; coming together to seek out the common ground; and never losing sight of the bigger picture,” the queen said.

As the head of state, the queen remains neutral on politics in public and is unable to vote, but her words are carefully watched as a moral bellwether.

The Times of London described the comments on Thursday as a “rebuke to warring politicians”, while the BBC said there was no doubt the monarch was sending a message.

Legislators on all sides of the increasingly tense Brexit debate have traded barbs in recent weeks as Prime Minister Theresa May tries to push ahead with the divorce deal she negotiated with the EU leaders even though it has been overwhelmingly rejected by Parliament.

While her remarks to the Women’s Institute were similar to those in the queen’s annual Christmas address, they come as May faces increasing pressure to rule out the possibility of leaving the EU without an agreement on future relations.

Work and Pensions Secretary Amber Rudd, a prominent supporter of the prime minister, said on Thursday she was “committed to making sure we avoid no-deal”, which would have devastating effects on the British economy.

A string of union bosses have been holding talks with May and are also urging her to take no-deal off the table.

May on Friday echoed the queen’s call for a respectful debate in Britain, her spokesman said while declining to comment directly on remarks from the monarch seen as a message to politicians on Brexit.

“With great respect, I wouldn’t wish to comment directly on the views of her majesty,” May’s spokesman said.

“The prime minister’s own view is that we should always show great respect for the point of view of others.”
