  • Mount Everest: Melting glaciers expose dead bodies

Expedition operators are concerned at the number of climbers’ bodies that are becoming exposed on Mount Everest as its glaciers melt.

Nearly 300 mountaineers have died on the peak since the first ascent attempt and two-thirds of bodies are thought still to be buried in the snow and ice.

Bodies are being removed on the Chinese side of the mountain, to the north, as the spring climbing season starts.

More than 4,800 climbers have scaled the highest peak on Earth.

“Because of global warming, the ice sheet and glaciers are fast melting and the dead bodies that remained buried all these years are now becoming exposed,” said Ang Tshering Sherpa, former president of Nepal Mountaineering Association.

“We have brought down dead bodies of some mountaineers who died in recent years, but the old ones that remained buried are now coming out.”

And a government officer who worked as a liaison officer on Everest added: “I myself have retrieved around 10 dead bodies in recent years from different locations on Everest and clearly more and more of them are emerging now.”

Officials with the Expedition Operators Association of Nepal (EOAN) said they were bringing down all ropes from the higher camps of Everest and Lhotse mountains this climbing season, but dealing with dead bodies was not as easy.

They point at Nepal’s law that requires government agencies’ involvement when dealing with bodies and said that was a challenge.

“This issue needs to be prioritised by both the government and the mountaineering industry,” said Dambar Parajuli, president of EOAN.

“If they can do it on the Tibet side of Everest, we can do it here as well.”

Everest camp Four also known as South Col

    Exposed dead bodies

In 2017, the hand of a dead mountaineer appeared above the ground at Camp 1.

Expedition operators said they deployed professional climbers of the Sherpa community to move the body.

The same year, another body appeared on the surface of the Khumbu Glacier.

Also known as the Khumbu Icefall, this is where most dead bodies have been surfacing in recent years, mountaineers say.

Another place that has been seeing dead bodies becoming exposed is the Camp 4 area, also called South Col, which is relatively flat.

“Hands and legs of dead bodies have appeared at the base camp as well in the last few years,” said an official with a non-government organisation active in the region.

“We have noticed that the ice level at and around the base camp has been going down, and that is why the bodies are becoming exposed.”

A pond on the Khumbu glacier

    Thinning glaciers

Several studies show that glaciers in the Everest region, as in most parts of the Himalayas, are fast melting and thinning.

A study in 2015 revealed that ponds on the Khumbu Glacier – that climbers need to cross to scale the mighty peak – were expanding and joining up because of the accelerated melting.

Nepal’s army drained the Imja Lake near Mount Everest in 2016 after its water from rapid glacial-melt had reached dangerous levels.

Another team of researchers, including members from Leeds and Aberystwyth universities in the UK, last year drilled the Khumbu Glacier and found the ice to be warmer than expected.

The ice recorded a minimum temperature of only −3.3C, with even the coldest ice being a full 2C warmer than the mean annual air temperature.

Not all dead bodies emerging from under the ice, however, are because of rapid glacial meltdown.

Some of them get exposed also because of the movement of the Khumbu Glacier, mountaineers say.

“Because of the movement of the Khumbu Glacier, we do get to see dead bodies from time to time,” said Tshering Pandey Bhote, vice president of Nepal National Mountain Guides Association.

“But most climbers are mentally prepared to come across such a sight.”

Body of Japanese climber brought down by helicopter from higher camp of Everest

    Dead bodies as ‘landmarks’

Some of the dead bodies on the higher altitude sectors of Mount Everest have also served as landmarks for mountaineers.

One such waypoint had been the “green boots” near the summit.

They were a reference to a climber who died under an overhanging rock. His green boots, still on his feet, faced the climbing route.

Some climbing experts said the body was later removed while Nepal’s tourism officials said they had no information on whether the remains are still visible.

Recovering and removing bodies from the higher camps can be both expensive and difficult.

Experts say it costs $40,000 to $80,000 to bring down dead bodies.

“One of the most challenging recoveries was from the height of 8,700m, near the summit,” said Ang Tshering Sherpa, the former president of NMA.

“The body was totally frozen and weighed 150kg and it had to be recovered from a difficult place at that altitude.”

Experts say any decision over what to do with a dead body on the mountain is also a very personal issue.

“Most climbers like to be left on the mountains if they died,” said Alan Arnette, a noted mountaineer who also writes on mountaineering.

“So it would be deemed disrespectful to just remove them unless they need to be moved from the climbing route or their families want them.”

  • Man seizes fridge he bought for girlfriend after catching her cheating

When people fall in love, they tend to do a lot of things to please their partners and show how much they love them.

This is exactly what a man identified as Ini Frank did when he bought a refrigerator for his girlfriend.

But after realising that he was not getting the same kind of love and commitment from the girlfriend Ini did the unthinkable by carrying the refrigerator away.

According to Ini who told his story in a popular Facebook group, he visited the girlfriend one day and realised that she had another boyfriend.

As if the realisation that his girlfriend was cheating was not enough, he met the rival drinking water from the very fridge he had bought for the girl.

In order not to drag the issue, Ini decided to take away the fridge.

  • Bloodhound: Land speed record car is relaunched

The Bloodhound supersonic car is back, under new management and preparing to renew its pursuit of the land speed record.

The project went into administration last year, unable to secure the financing needed to go racing – even though the vehicle was all but built.

But with the purchase of the car by entrepreneur Ian Warhurst, Bloodhound has been put on a new footing.

Engineers are looking to start high-speed trials “as soon as possible”.

These could take place in the South African desert later this year, although team-members are being cautious about giving hard timelines for the re-booted venture.

Mr Warhurst is determined, however, that the new set-up should keep its promises and deliver on its objectives.

“My kids kept saying I should buy a fast car, so I bought the fastest,” he joked.

“I knew that I could buy the car, save it and put it in a museum. But once I’d bought it we looked into whether we could run it, whether we could resurrect it as effectively a new project.

“It is commercially viable. We believe the value of the sponsorship will easily pay for the project,” he told BBC News.

    Bloodhound

    What remains the same?

Casual observers may not notice much of a difference. Yes, the car has a new white and red livery but it’s exactly the same vehicle that made its inaugural slow-speed (200mph/320km/h) runs at Newquay airport in October 2017.

It will still be powered by a Rolls-Royce EJ200 jet engine and a Nammo rocket, and RAF man Andy Green (the current land speed record holder – 763mph/1,228km/h) will do the driving.

Mark Chapman, too, the engineering director, remains in charge of the technical side of the project. And Ron Ayers, the aerodynamicist and legend of land speed record design, is still involved. But there are some significant changes behind the scenes.

Image result for Bloodhound: Land speed record car is relaunched

    What has changed?

People might notice that the patchwork of sponsors’ logos has gone. Previous statements of support were all contracted through the old holding company, Bloodhound Programme Ltd, which no longer exists. The new legal entity is Grafton LSR Ltd, which has Mr Warhurst as its CEO.

The HQ has moved. It’s no longer in the Bristol suburb of Avonmouth and has shifted along the Severn Estuary to the university technical centre in the Gloucestershire town of Berkeley.

What fans really want to hear, however, is that the financial underpinning of the project has changed. It’s understood Bloodhound will still pursue a sponsorship and partnership model, but Mr Warhurst will act as a kind of guarantor, ready to step in if cashflow faces a bottleneck.

Depending how successful the project is in raising funds, the Barnsley entrepreneur, who made his money in turbochargers, could be putting his hand deep into his pocket, or not much at all. But that “safety net” was never there in the past, which meant that when cash coming into the project slowed, it would often be forced into hibernation. Momentum was lost.

Image result for Bloodhound: Land speed record car is relaunched

There is another key departure from the past approach. Sponsorship opportunities now include the project title and the car’s livery. Bloodhound may not stay white and red for long.

    Technically, where is Bloodhound?

As it was – very nearly complete, certainly in the guise required to begin high-speed trials, which would take the car into the 500-600mph region. That’s the realm where airflows get interesting and the team can learn about the vehicle’s handling and how to operate it when an attempt is made to go through the sound barrier and on to 800mph+.

There are currently some body panels missing, which anyone who saw the car run in Newquay will recognise. The most obvious are the wheel fairings.

There’s some electronics work to do, the brakes need to be switched from carbon to steel, the parachutes to slow the car have to be installed, and the near-200 sensors across Bloodhound must be hooked up.

“It sounds daft but the longest items are going to be the paperwork,” said Mr Chapman.

“All our assets are now owned by Grafton and the switch comes with a lot of bureaucracy that needs to be gone through if we’re to take things like an EJ200 to South Africa. We’d like to get there before this year’s weather window closes, but if we can’t – so be it. We’ll only announce a date when we know we can hit it.”

    Andy Green

    What happens now?

The project will move forward in two phases. The first is simply to try to break the land speed record set by Andy Green in Thrust SSC way back in 1997 – the first and only time a car has been taken through the sound barrier.

In the past, Bloodhound has always been spoken about as a 1,000mph vehicle – and its engineers firmly believe it can really go that fast. But to achieve this phase two goal, modifications would be required at the rear of the vehicle to improve the aerodynamics and to make room for the most powerful version of Nammo’s rocket technology.

So, for the time being the major focus is just on getting phase one done. Phase two is for a later conversation.

“We are in a fantastic position with a mostly finished car which has already proved its basic performance with the runs it had at Newquay,” Wing Commander Andy Green told BBC News.

“We’re still trying to achieve an astonishing global engineering adventure by getting the most advanced, straight-line racing car in history to a new land speed record. But Ian, sensibly, has said ‘let’s make this as manageable as possible by doing it in two bites’.”

  • Kenya’s president deactivates Facebook and Twitter accounts

All social media accounts for Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta have been deactivated after someone gained “unauthorised access”, his chief of staff has tweeted.

Nzioka Waita gave no details how it happened but added that the platforms will be restored after “remedial action”.

Mr Kenyatta’s Twitter and Facebook account have millions of followers.

Privately-owned newspaper The Star reports that a tweet deemed politically sensitive, that was posted this morning, was the reason behind the deactivation of the accounts.

The Star shared a screengrab of the tweet:

The paper reports that the mention of “my closest political ally” in the tweet could be referring to Mr Kenyatta’s deputy, William Ruto.

Mr Ruto’s supporters have been critical of Mr Kenyatta’s latest war against corruption that has resulted in the arrest and questioning of top government officials, saying that it was a witch-hunt against his deputy.

They say that people seen as close to Mr Ruto were being targeted.

The relationship between the two leaders, who ran on a joint ticket in the 2013 and 2017 elections, is said to have been strained recently, especially after Mr Kenyatta called a truce with opposition leader Raila Odinga.

Mr Odinga and Mr Kenyatta – who were engaged in a bitter contest in the 2017 election – agreed to work together in 2018 for the sake of “peace in the country”.

Their close relationship and Mr Odinga’s increased profile since the truce are being seen by some as a political manoeuvre to scuttle Mr Ruto’s plan to succeed Mr Kenyatta as president.

  • Cardi B applies to trademark ‘Okurrr’

Cardi B has filed to trademark her catchphrase / sound effect, “Okurrr”.

The New York-born star peppers the phrase throughout her Grammy-winning debut album, Invasion of Privacy.

Last year, she described it as sounding like a “cold pigeon in New York City“.

The application was made by her company, Washpoppin, and would cover merchandise like t-shirts and hoodies.

A second application was made for “paper goods, namely cups and posters”.

According to Cardi, the phrase is “almost like, ‘OK’ but the ‘okayyyy’ is played out” with an extended series of rolled Rs.

It can be used as a simple affirmation or, with a change of inflection, as a comeback to someone who’s in desperate need of criticism.

Cardi’s trademark application helpfully clarified that “Okurrr” is correctly spelled with three Rs.

But she also made sure to submit an alternative spelling, using two Rs, to combat knock-off merchandise.

    Pop’s top trademarks

The rapper is not the first star who’s attempted to trademark catchphrases and lyrics.

In 2015, Taylor Swift filed to protect phrases including “this sick beat” and “we never go out of style” from her hit album 1989; while Britney Spears made a failed attempt to trademark the song title Toxic in 2005.

Prince’s estate is currently trying to trademark a specific shade of purple, called Love Symbol #2, which it claims is the “official colour across the brand he left behind”.

And Beyonce and Jay-Z have even tried to trademark their daughter’s name, Blue Ivy Carter, in an attempt to stop opportunists from using her name on unlicensed products.

However, their applications have been turned down by the United States Patents and Trademark Office, with a fourth attempt currently under review.

  • Uber ‘picks New York Stock Exchange’ for stock listing

Ride-hailing firm Uber will list on the New York Stock Exchange, according to reports, in one of the most anticipated stock debuts of the year.

The decision to opt for the Wall Street exchange over the tech-heavy Nasdaq was first reported by Bloomberg, citing sources.

It comes as smaller, ride-sharing rival Lyft prepares to list on the Nasdaq.

Uber is expected to launch its initial public offering (IPO) in April and may be valued as high as $120bn (£91.4bn).

The company did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the reports it would list on the New York Stock Exchange.

Other major technology companies including Google, Apple and Facebook trade on the Nasdaq.

But the New York Stock Exchange has secured some of world’s biggest IPOs including Alibaba and General Motors.

Uber’s IPO come as investors have shown strong appetite for new stock listings.

Shares in denim icon Levi Strauss surged on its return to the stock market after 34 years. The price shot higher immediately after Wall Street opened – and closed up 31.8% – valuing the company at $8.7bn.

Analysts said the success of the listing bodes well for investor appetite for other flotations planned this year, including Pinterest, Airbnb, Slack and Uber.

    Disruptive force

Uber has been controversial for disrupting the taxi industry in more than 60 countries.

It continues to face opposition from both private hire drivers and regulators in several jurisdictions.

The ride-hailing taxi app company has also faced legal action in the UK and US over its classification of drivers as self-employed contractors, rather than as workers.

A series of scandals dogged Uber in 2017, including sexual harassment claims made by female employees, data breaches, the use of illicit software to thwart government regulators, and the forced resignation of its chief executive Travis Kalanick.

  • Big banks are using AI to keep out of trouble

Doing business with the wrong kind of client can be extremely costly for banks.

HSBC (HBCYF) had to pay $1.9 billion in 2012 to settle allegations that it allowed international drug cartels to launder billions of dollars across borders. ING (ING) took a $900 million hit in September after admitting criminals had moved money through its accounts. And Danske Bank has in recent months found itself at the center of a scandal involving suspicious Russian funds.

Read: Delay in banking sector rots prosecution may affect public confidence Ken Thompson

A Singapore-based startup thinks artificial intelligence could help financial companies avoid that kind of trouble. Silent Eight says its technology uses AI and machine learning to identify and halt illegal transactions before they happen.

The company is the brainchild of Martin Markiewicz. The trained mathematician founded Silent Eight when he moved to Southeast Asia from Poland about five years ago.

Read: Islamic Banking is not the sole preserve of Muslims – Afro Arab boss

Markiewicz claims artificial intelligence is better than the methods banks currently use. They often rely on staff manually checking lists of individuals and companies facing sanctions or under criminal investigation.

“Global banks look at millions of suspicious transactions every year, so it’s a very inefficient way of keeping the bad guys out of the financial system,” he said. With AI, “you can do it much faster and you’re not exposed to human error.”

Silent Eight’s software hunts for transactions like a blacklisted North Korean government official trying to open an account or a company with ties to the Iranian government trying to take out a loan.

“No one wants to be the bank that’s caught financing North Korea’s nuclear program,” Markiewicz said.

Silent Eight’s system works by collecting and analyzing data from thousands of documents and other sources, getting smarter and more effective as it does so, according to the company.

The startup initially considered setting up operations in London or Tokyo before settling on Singapore. Markiewicz said the team chose the city-state for its ease of doing business, use of the English language and the good reputation of its financial regulator.

Banks are taking an interest in what the company offers.

Standard Chartered (SCBFF) announced last year that it was deploying Silent Eight’s tech to help screen potential clients against “watch lists” of high risk individuals and companies.

The international bank, which is based in London but has a heavy focus on Asia, paid more than $600 million in penalties in 2012 after US authorities found that one of its units violated Iran sanctions. The bank recently set aside an additional $900 million for further potential fines.

A Standard Chartered spokesman declined to provide details on how the bank is using Silent Eight’s technology.

Oversea-Chinese Banking Corporation, a big Singaporean bank, is also using Silent Eight’s technology. Markiewicz said several other financial institutions around the world are trialing the technology or are in discussions about deploying it.

  • Game of Thrones: Emilia Clarke’s brain surgery ordeal

A Game of Thrones star has revealed she had to undergo brain surgery between two seasons of the hit series.

Writing in The New Yorker, Emilia Clarke said she suffered two “life-threatening” aneurysms.

The actor, who plays Daenerys Targaryen, underwent surgery twice, leading to “terrible anxiety” and panic attacks.

Despite thinking she would die, Clarke has now recovered beyond her “most unreasonable hopes”.

The actress, who is from Oxford, plays a young princess sold into marriage who she describes as “a figure of power and self-possession”.

Clarke experienced her first aneurysm in 2011. She had been working out before collapsing in a toilet with “shooting, stabbing, constricting pain”.

Clarke's character, Daenerys, with her husband and baby

Doctors diagnosed her with having a subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH), from which a third of sufferers die immediately or soon after.

After the surgery, a condition called aphasia set in, meaning she could not communicate and feared her acting career was over.

“In my worst moments, I wanted to pull the plug,” she said. “I asked the medical staff to let me die.”

She recovered enough to return to filming Season 2 of Game of Thrones but said: “I was often so woozy, so weak, that I thought I was going to die.”

In 2013, while performing for a play in New York, she received brain surgery for a second aneurysm on the other side of her brain.

This surgery was far more intrusive, meaning her skull had to be opened up.

“I looked as though I had been through a war more gruesome than any Daenerys experienced,” said Clarke.

Her piece in The New Yorker is the first time she has spoken about her experience.

She says she is now “at a hundred per cent” and has helped develop a charity that supports people recovering from brain injuries and strokes.

  • Afghanistan conflict: Two US soldiers killed on operation

Two US service members have been killed while serving in Afghanistan, Nato says.

They were killed on Friday but the names of the victims will be withheld until 24 hours after their families have been notified.

The deaths bring the number of US service members killed in Afghanistan this year to four.

It comes amid negotiations between the US and Taliban insurgents to end the 17-year conflict in Afghanistan.

The top US envoy seeking to broker peace in Afghanistan met the Taliban’s co-founder for the first time in February.

Despite the negotiations, the country is more dangerous than ever.

More civilians were killed last year in Afghanistan than at any time since records have been kept, with 3,804 civilians losing their lives.

At least six people were killed in three bomb explosions in the the capital, Kabul, on Thursday during Persian New Year celebrations. The attacks were claimed by the Islamic State group.

Thousands of Nato-led troops remain in Afghanistan supporting government efforts against the Taliban.

President Trump is reportedly considering withdrawing half of the 14,000 American troops currently serving, which make up the bulk of the force.

  • Golan Heights: Syria condemns Donald Trump’s remarks

Syria has condemned as “irresponsible” US President Donald Trump’s comments that it was time to recognise Israel’s sovereignty over the occupied Golan Heights.

A statement published by the Syrian state news agency said it showed the “blind bias” of the US towards Israel.

It said Syria was determined to recover the area “through all available means”.

Israel captured the Golan Heights from Syria in 1967 and annexed it in 1981 in a move not recognised internationally.

Israel wants to contain the military presence of its arch-enemy Iran in Syria, which has grown stronger throughout eight years of conflict.

Mr Trump’s remarks on Thursday overturned decades of US policy on the issue. In a tweet, he said the plateau was of “critical strategic and security importance to the State of Israel and regional stability!”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu thanked the US president in a phone call, telling him “you’ve made history”.

    How did Syria respond?

The statement carried by the Sana news agency said Mr Trump’s comments had shown “contempt” for international law and that they would not change “the reality that the Golan was and will remain Syrian, Arab”.

“The Syrian nation is more determined to liberate this precious piece of Syrian national land through all available means,” the unnamed foreign ministry source added.

Mr Trump’s remarks come as Mr Netanyahu faces a closely fought general election on 9 April, as well as a series of possible corruption charges.

The two leaders are due to meet in Washington DC next week, when Mr Netanyahu is due to address the pro-Israel lobbying Aipac group.

The decision was condemned by Palestinians, who want East Jerusalem to be the capital of a future Palestinian state, and the UN General Assembly demanded its cancellation.

What other reaction has there been?

Mr Netanyahu tweeted his thanks to Mr Trump, saying: “At a time when Iran seeks to use Syria as a platform to destroy Israel, President Trump boldly recognises Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights”. The US ambassador to Israel, David Friedman, praised Mr Trump’s “moral, courageous and just decision”.

However, the US president has faced strong criticism from the region, as well as some of Syria’s allies:

    • Russia, which has been providing military support to President Bashar al-Assad in the Syrian conflict, said a change in the status of the Golan would be a direct violation of decisions taken by the UN
    • Iran, whose forces are also backing the Syrian president, called the US position “illegal and unacceptable”
    • Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who has supported the Syrian opposition in the war, said the remarks had “brought the region to the brink of a new crisis”
    • Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit said the announcement was “completely beyond international law”

Richard Haass, a former senior US state department official who is now president of the Council on Foreign Relations think-tank, said he “strongly disagreed” with Mr Trump and that the decision would violate a UN Security Council resolution “which rules out acquiring territory by war”.

    A good surprise for Netanyahu

If the announcement came as a surprise, it was a good surprise for Mr Netanyahu. And the surprise would have been in the timing, not the substance, because the idea of the US recognising Israel’s sovereignty over the Golan has been under active consideration for some time.

Israel has gained traction in the White House and parts of Congress by arguing that Iran is using Syria as a base from which to target Israel, with the Golan Heights as the front line. But the formal US recognition doesn’t change anything on the ground: Israel was already acting with full military authority.

Critics have concluded this was a blatant attempt to give Mr Netanyahu a boost in a hotly-contested election. If so, it’s one that violates important principles of international law, they say: Mr Trump has endorsed the seizure of territory, and will have no moral authority to criticise Russia for doing so in Ukraine’s Crimea.

    Presentational grey line

    What are the Golan Heights?

The region is located about 60km (40 miles) south-west of the Syrian capital, Damascus, and covers about 1,200 sq km (400 sq miles).

Israel seized most of the Golan from Syria in the closing stages of the 1967 Middle East war, and thwarted a Syrian attempt to retake the region during the 1973 war.

The two countries agreed a disengagement plan the following year that involved the creation of a 70km-long (44-mile) demilitarised zone patrolled by a United Nations observer force. But they remained technically in a state of war.

Israeli security fence separates the Israeli occupied sector of Golan Heights (right) from Syria

In 1981, Israel’s parliament passed legislation applying Israeli “law, jurisdiction, and administration” to the Golan, in effect annexing the territory. But the international community did not recognise the move and maintained that the Golan was occupied Syrian territory. UN Security Council Resolution 497 declared the Israeli decision “null and void and without international legal effect”.

Three years ago, when former President Barack Obama was in office, the US voted in favour of a Security Council statement expressing deep concern that Mr Netanyahu had declared Israel would never relinquish the Golan.

Syria has always insisted that it will not agree a peace deal with Israel unless it withdraws from the whole of the Golan. The last US-brokered direct peace talks broke down in 2000, while Turkey mediated in indirect talks in 2008.

There are more than 30 Israeli settlements in the Golan, which are home to an estimated 20,000 people. The settlements are considered illegal under international law, although Israel disputes this. The settlers live alongside some 20,000 Syrians, most of them Druze Arabs, who did not flee when the Golan was captured.

  • NDC writes third letter to Akufo-Addo

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in another letter signed by its National Chairman, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo has asked President Akufo Addo to remain supportive to both the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and NDC as they meet and deliberate over the issue of disbanding vigilantism.

Read: ‘Rushing’ Akufo-Addo has failed Ghana already – Deputy NDC Women Organiser

Part of the letter read: “without prejudice to your prerogatives as President, we think that such a National Dialogue would provide the best opportunity to evaluate the adequacy of our legislation and get a broad consensus behind whatever interventions your Excellency intends. Pending this, we note that the general organizations whose operations are inimical to the public interest.

Read: NDC performed with common sense, not magic Adongo to Akufo-Addo

We also note that your Excellency as Chair of the National Security Council can demand that it ceases the unlawful organization and deployment of armed forces such as we saw in the Ayawaso West Bye-Election. And, of course, your Excellency can also instruct your ministerial appointees at the Ministries for National Security and Interior to take steps to disband these forces”.

    Attached is the full statement

    Background

President Nana Akufo-Addo first proposed the meeting between the two parties when he presented his state of the nation address in February following the gun violence that marred the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election on Thursday, 31 January 2019.

The NDC, however, wrote to the president, through its National Chairman, Mr Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, suggesting that the National Peace Council be made to be part of such a meeting as a neutral interlocutor along with other stakeholders.

Read: NPP formally invites NDC to dialogue on disbanding vigilantes

The president responded to that letter insisting the two parties were capable of meeting at the table to deal with the problem themselves without involving outsiders.

The NDC replied the president in a second letter in which the party insisted on having neutral third parties such as the UN, AU, and ECOWAS at such a meeting to mediate the talks.

In his second reply to the NDC, the president said he had ordered his Attorney General to start drafting legislation toward outlawing party militarism without prejudice to any meeting the two parties may subsequently have over the same matter.

  • Christchurch shootings: New Zealand falls silent for mosque victims

New Zealand has broadcast the Islamic call to prayer and observed a two-minute silence in ceremonies to mark a week since the Christchurch attacks.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern joined thousands of mourners near the Al-Noor mosque, one of two places of worship targeted in last Friday’s shootings.

Imam Gamal Fouda, who led the prayers, said: “We are broken-hearted, but we are not broken.”

Fifty people were killed and dozens more wounded in the attacks.

Australian Brenton Tarrant, a self-proclaimed white supremacist, has been charged with one murder and is expected to face further charges.

On Thursday Ms Ardern announced a ban on all types of semi-automatic weapons.

    What is happening on Friday?

Thousands of people have gathered in Hagley Park, near the Al-Noor mosque, to mark Friday’s national day of reflection for the victims.

The Muslim call to prayer, or adhan, was broadcast on national television and radio at 13:30 (00:30 GMT) and was followed by a two-minute silence.

In an address beforehand, Ms Ardern said: “New Zealand mourns with you, we are one.”

“According to the Prophet Muhammad… the believers in their mutual kindness, compassion and sympathy are just like one body. When any part of the body suffers, the whole body feels pain.”

    Victims of the Christchurch shootings

    Victims of mosque attacks

The Imam of Al-Noor mosque, Gamal Fouda, was there when the attack happened and said the gunman “broke the hearts of millions around the world”.

“Today, from the same place, I look out and I see the love and compassion,” he said.

“We are alive, we are together, we are determined to not let anyone divide us.”

One observer, John Clark, said the message was profound: “People will be rethinking how they react, how they think, and how they speak sometimes – it’s penetrated to that level of society.

“We like to think that we’re a liberal community, but we know that there are dark parts,” said Mr Clark, 72. “It will positively affect New Zealand and maybe we’ll have even more to offer the world.”

Gamal Fouda, the imam (lead cleric) of tragedy-stricken Al Noor mosque, delivers a sermon ahead of a two-minute observation of silence for victims of the twin mosque massacre, during congregational Friday prayers and memorial gathering at Hagley Park in Christchurch on March 22, 2109.

Many mosques across the country are opening their doors to visitors, and human chains will be formed outside some in symbolic acts of protection and support.

A mass funeral is being held for 30 of the dead, including the youngest victim Mucaad Ibrahim, aged three , who was killed at the Al-Noor mosque.

    At the scene

Howard Johnson, BBC News, Hagley Park, Christchurch

“I’m wearing this in solidarity today,” said hairdresser Melody, pointing at a blue headscarf adorned with gold crucifixes.

Like thousands of others in the city of Christchurch, she’s been struggling to come to terms with the horror of last week’s attacks.

All week advertising hoardings have been beaming positive messages back onto the streets: “This isn’t us”, “Kia Kaha Christchurch” and “No room for racism here”.

Friday was a chance for Christchurchers to bring those sentiments together in one place at the same time and to pay their respects to the dead.

People flocked from all corners of the city and flowers and messages of sympathy were laid at the foot of the park’s towering oak trees.

A Maori biker gang gathered in the enclosure for Muslim prayers to offer their protection. One had a large red crucifix emblazoned on the back of his leather waistcoat. It felt symbolic of New Zealand’s positive, multicultural response to the killings.

When the tributes were over people started pouring out of the park, back into the city and their everyday lives.

I approached Christine McCartney. She was born in the city in 1951 and has lived here her whole life. “It’s all been deeply saddening,” she told me, “but I feel positive about the way this has brought us all together.”

Earlier, Ms Ardern encouraged as many New Zealanders as possible to use the day to pause and reflect.

“I know many New Zealanders wish to mark the week that has passed since the terrorist attack and to support the Muslim community as they return to mosques,” she said.

“How we choose to reflect during the silence will be different for each of us. Everyone should do what feels right for them, wherever they are – at home, at work, at school.”

One social media campaign has urged non-Muslim women in New Zealand to wear a headscarf for the day.

Meanwhile, government officials worked into the night to prepare the mosque and the bodies of victims for a mass burial in Christchurch later on Friday.

One person who took part said: “All the bodies are washed. We finished around 1.30am. It was our duty. After we finished, there was a lot of emotion. People were crying and hugging.”

    What is the gun ban?

Ms Ardern announced a ban on all types of semi-automatic weapons and assault rifles following the Christchurch attacks.

She said she expected new legislation to be in place by 11 April, saying: “Our history changed forever. Now, our laws will too.”

“Six days after this attack, we are announcing a ban on all military style semi-automatics (MSSA) and assault rifles in New Zealand,” Ms Ardern said in a news conference.

“Related parts used to convert these guns into MSSAs are also being banned, along with all high-capacity magazines.”

An amnesty has been imposed so the owners of affected weapons can hand them in, and a buy-back scheme will follow.

The buy-back could cost up to NZ$200m ($138m; £104m), but Ms Ardern said “that is the price that we must pay to ensure the safety of our communities”.

Ms Ardern has also announced that a National Memorial Service for victims is being planned for next week.

  • China chemical blast death toll rises to 47

The death toll in a huge blast at a chemical plant in eastern China has jumped to 47, with 90 badly injured, according to state news agency Xinhua.

The powerful explosion followed a fire at the factory which produces fertiliser.

China’s earthquake administration reported a tremor equivalent to 2.2-magnitude at the time of the blast.

The death toll makes it one of the country’s worst industrial accidents in recent years.

The blast happened at about 14:50 local time (06:50 GMT) on Thursday at a plant in Yancheng, run by Tianjiayi Chemical.

According to Xinhua, a total of 640 people were sent to hospital. Many were in critical condition and dozens had severe injuries, the agency reports.

Armed police officers carry an injured man after an explosion at a chemical industrial park

Images of the site showed a fireball exploding, billowing clouds enveloping the area, injured people, and damage to buildings.

The blast was so powerful that it knocked down factory buildings some distance away, trapping workers, according to local media.

Staff at the Henglida Chemical Factory, 3km (1.8 miles) from the explosion, said its roof collapsed as they fled, and windows and doors were blown out.

Provincial authorities said firefighters had to be brought in from across the province.

The fire was brought under control at around 03:00 local time on Friday, state TV said.

Police at the site of the explosion

One woman, who gave her surname as Xiang, said she had been concerned about safety and pollution levels at the plant for some time.

“We knew we’d be blown up one day,” said told AFP.

Reuters quoted local officials as saying there had been no abnormalities detected at the site before the blast, but that the province would be conducting emergency inspections of other chemical producers and warehouses.

Industrial accidents ranging from factory fires to mining disasters are common in China, often due to poorly enforced safety standards.

The biggest accident in recent years was the August 2015 Tianjin explosion, which killed more than 160 people and injured nearly 1,000.

The exact cause of Thursday’s explosion is still under investigation. Tianjiayi Chemical, founded in 2007, has received six government penalties in the past over waste management and air pollution, according to the South China Morning Post.

President Xi Jinping has called for an “all-out effort” to aid the injured and said authorities must learn lessons from the blast prevent future accidents.

  • Construction works on new classroom block for Kwasi Nyarko JHS progressing

Construction works on a new classroom block for the Kwasi Nyarko L/A Junior High School in the Upper West Akim District of the Eastern Region is progressing steadily.

Read: Jomoro Assembly hands over six-unit classroom block to Ehoaka Basic School

The school used to operate from a block which was a death trap to the students and staff and was declared not safe for use by the District Works Engineer after a heavy rainstorm hit the area in November last year.

The new block which is expected to be completed in April 2019 is to be furnished with facilities that the old classroom block lacked.

Read: Kedzi AME Zion basic school gets new classroom block

The building is currently at the roofing level and has a staff common room, toilet facilities, library and an Information Communication Technology (ICT) Centre.

When Graphic Online visited the school after the rainstorm last year, it the walls of the old classroom block had developed deep cracks.

That compelled the headteacher at the time, Mr Eric Tetteh to organise classes under trees.

The beams supporting the roof of the classroom block were hanging loosely and dangerously in the classrooms and the walls around the Form Three classroom had all collapsed.

Apart from that, the school lacked a toilet facility and a staff common room. A temporary structure made with palm fronds was what was being used as a staff common room.

During a recent visit to the school, the contractor for the project, Mr Isaac Kwame Yeboah said the classroom block would be completed in April 2019 to enable the students move in and prepare for the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) this year.

He said he was pre-financing the project and the total cost would be about GH¢38,000.

The Acting headmistress of the school, Ms Rosemond Ofosu Appiah commended the contractor for working fast to be able to complete the building so that the students could move in before June when they would write the BECE.

    Interviews

In an interview with Ms Joyce Tetteh, a student of the school, she said studying under trees was very uncomfortable because they were under the mercy of the sun and rain all the time and the school has had to close on a number of occasions because of the rain and the scorching sun.

“Sometimes as soon as it threatens to rain the headmaster sends us home so we are not caught up in the rain”, she added.

Master Paul Kumasie, a form three student also said he was elated that the classroom block would be completed before he left the school since they have suffered for a very long time.

  • Millions of Facebook passwords exposed internally

The passwords of millions of Facebook users were accessible by up to 20,000 employees of the social network, it has been reported.

Security researcher Brian Krebs broke the news about data protection failures, which saw up to 600 million passwords stored in plain text.

Read: Facebook sues over ‘data-grabbing’ quizzes

The passwords that were exposed could date back to 2012, he said.

In a statement, Facebook said it had now resolved a “glitch” that had stored the passwords on its internal network.

Read: Facebook needs regulation as Zuckerberg ‘fails’ – UK MPs

In a detailed expose, Mr Krebs said a Facebook source had told him about “security failures” that had let developers create applications that logged and stored the passwords without encrypting them.

Commenting on Mr Krebs’s story Facebook engineer, Scott Renfro said an internal investigation started after Facebook had uncovered the logs had not revealed any “signs of misuse”.

In public comments, Facebook said it had discovered the issue in January as part of a routine security review.

And its investigation showed that most of the people affected were users of Facebook Lite, which tends to be used in nations where net connections are sparse and slow.

“We estimate that we will notify hundreds of millions of Facebook Lite users, tens of millions of other Facebook users, and tens of thousands of Instagram users,” the company told Reuters.

But it added it would enforce a password re-set only if its taskforce looking into the issue uncovered abuse of the login credentials.

The news caps a long period of trouble for Facebook over the way it handles and protects user data.

In September last year, it said information on 50 million users had been exposed by a security flaw.

And earlier in 2018 it revealed that data on millions of users had been harvested by data science company Cambridge Analytica.

Who is the best rapper of all time? It’s a question often debated by hip-hop fans – although 1Xtra’s DJ Ace says this achievement by Jay-Z should end the argument for good.

“The Blueprint for me is the perfect album. If we think about consistency, impact on general culture – Jay-Z might have to be number one.”

The “growth” Jay-Z has shown since The Blueprint is another reason Ace holds him in such high esteem.

“We’ve seen all facets of his life, watched him grow from a boy to a man. From talking about cars, money and girls to talking about how important it is to vote or give back to your community. This latest accolade is well deserved.”

  • Iraq ferry sinking: ‘Nearly 100 dead’ in Tigris river

Almost 100 people are reported to have died after a ferry sank in the Tigris river in Iraq’s city of Mosul.

Most of the victims were women and children, the interior ministry said. It is thought nearly 200 people were on board.

Read: Iraq ferry sinking: ‘At least 65 dead’ in Tigris river at Mosul

The ferry was heading towards a tourist island as part of new year celebrations.

Mosul’s civil defence agency reportedly said most on board could not swim.

At least 19 children and 61 women were among the 94 people said to have died, and 55 people were rescued.

    What happened?

The vessel was on its way to Umm Rabaen island, a tourist area about 4km (2.5 miles) upstream and north of the city centre. People across the region are celebrating Nowruz, the new year festival.

Footage shows the ferry tilting sharply to the right and taking on water, before flipping over entirely and being dragged swiftly downstream by the fast-flowing river.

Images on social media showed the upturned vessel and people floating in the current.

“It was carrying too many passengers, so the water began to rush onboard and the ferry became heavier and overturned,” one passenger told AFP news agency. “With my own eyes I saw dead children in the water.”

Ambulances and helicopters arrived to help survivors and search for the bodies of those who died.

Authorities had reportedly warned people about rising water levels as the gates of the Mosul dam had been opened, and some are accusing the ship operator of ignoring the advice.

    What’s been the reaction

Iraq’s justice ministry reportedly ordered the arrest of nine ferry company workers, and barred the ship’s owners and the owners of the tourist site from leaving Iraq.

Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi meanwhile has ordered an investigation “to determine responsibilities”.

In a statement Mr Mahdi said he was following the story “with pain and sadness”, and had ordered “all state efforts” to find survivors and treat victims.

The prime minister later toured a hospital and a morgue in the city, and declared three days of national mourning.

Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, the special representative for Iraq of the United Nations secretary general, said it was a “terrible tragedy”.

“Our hearts go out to the families and relatives of the victims,” she said in a statement.

However, local information account Mosul Eye reports that security forces are trying to arrest journalists reporting on the ferry sinking.

    What’s Mosul’s recent history?

Mosul lies 400 km (250 miles) north of Iraq’s capital Baghdad on the river Tigris, and is home to up to 2 million people.

The city was captured by the Islamic State group in June 2014 and became its de-facto capital.

It was not liberated until July 2017 after a nine-month battle that left large parts of the city in ruins.

  • New Zealand falls silent for mosque victims

New Zealand has broadcast the Islamic call to prayer and observed a two-minute silence in ceremonies to mark a week since the Christchurch attacks.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern joined thousands of mourners near the Al-Noor mosque, one of two places of worship targeted in last Friday’s shootings.

Read: Christchurch shootings: New Zealand to ban military style weapons

Addressing the Muslim community she said: “New Zealand mourns with you, we are one.”

Fifty people were killed and dozens more wounded in the attacks.

Read: New Zealand mosque shootings toll rises to 50, authorities to begin releasing bodies

In an address beforehand, Ms Ardern cited Islamic scripture, adding: “When any part of the body suffers the whole body feels pain.”

Imam Gamal Fouda, who was leading prayers, said the gunman “broke the hearts of millions around the world”.

“Today, from the same place, I look out and I see the love and compassion,” he said. “New Zealand is unbreakable.”

Many mosques across the country are expected to open their doors to visitors and human chains will be formed outside some in symbolic acts of protection and solidarity.

After we finished there was a lot of emotion, people were crying and hugging.”

  • Thomas Partey named among 10 best midfielders in the world

We are reaching the business end of the 2018/19 season of football and like every other season, we have witnessed brilliant football all around the world. In football, every position is important, but the midfield governs a team’s performance.

The midfielders breakdown opposition play by making timely interceptions, they dictate the proceedings in the middle and they also create goalscoring opportunities. The midfielders also tend to do the dirty work for the team, so that their attackers can do the damage upfield.

It was pretty difficult to pick out the top 10 midfielders in the world at the moment, as there have been a number of brilliant performances in the middle of the park. Before beginning with the slideshow, here are the midfielders who just missed out from this list.

Read: Inter Milan join pursuit for Thomas Partey

Honorable mentions: Thiago Alcantara ( Bayern Munich), Casemiro ( Real Madrid), Luka Modric ( Real Madrid), Thomas Partey ( Atletico Madrid), Miralem Pjanic ( Juventus), Piotr Zielinski ( Napoli), Marco Verrati ( Paris Saint-Germain), Lucas Torreira ( Arsenal).

All the above players were considered, but they just didn’t cut into the top 10 in the world according to me. This list is purely based on performances this season and not on reputation.

So, without further ado, here are the top 10 midfielders in the world at the moment:

    #10 N’Golo Kante:

In spite of being played out of position, Kante has been brilliant for Chelsea FC. Kante has played most of this season in the right midfielder position as Sarri prefers Jorginho as the deep-lying playmaker. In spite of being played out of position, the Frenchman has been absolutely brilliant for Chelsea. Kante has been running the show for the Blues, while Jorginho has faltered in his preferred role.

Kante has adjusted his game perfectly and he has scored 3 goals and assisted 4, which is not bad for a natural defensive midfielder. If Sarri would have played Kante in his preferred role, he might have the best in the world again, but Sarri clearly doesn’t see Kante as his defensive midfielder.

    #9 Axel Witsel:

Witsel can be considered the best signing of the summer. Witsel signed for Borussia Dortmund this summer and what a signing the Belgian has been. He can be considered as the best signing of the summer this season. The Belgian has completely transformed Dortmund’s midfield and has been running the show for BVB in the middle of the field.

Witsel has been a pivotal part of Dortmund’s title challenge this season. His timely interceptions and tackles have instigated many Dortmund counterattacks. The Belgian has won 71 percent of his tackles this year and has scored 3 goals.

    #8 Georginio Wijnaldum:

Liverpool’s best midfielder this season, Wijnaldum When Liverpool signed Fabinho and Keita, everyone thought that Wijnaldum would get less game time, but that hasn’t happened. Wijnaldum has been Liverpool’s best midfielder this season. The Holland international has played primarily in two positions, that is the number 6 role and the number 8 role.

Wijnaldum prefers the number 8 role, but his versatile nature permits to him play anywhere in the midfield. He is absolutely vital to Liverpool’s chances of winning the Premier League this season. His interceptions, tackling, tenacity and tireless running have been a highlight this year.

    #7 David Silva:

David Silva remains vital for Manchester City’s quadruple dream – FA Cup Quarter Final.

David Silva has been Premier League’s most consistent midfielder over the years and he has showed his class again this season. With Kevin de Bruyne out for most of the season through injury, the Spaniard had to step up and he along with Bernardo Silva have done just that.

The 33-year-old has scored 9 goals and assisted 10 this season. He just like last season has been Pep Guardiola’s go to man. The Spaniard is one of best on the ball and his vision can be compared to the very best. He remains vital for City in their quadruple dream.

    #6 Sergio Busquets:

FC Barcelona’s conductor, Sergio Busquets Busquets is the definition of a deep-lying playmaker. The Spaniard is the conductor of Barcelona and everything good on the field goes through him. He controls the tempo of the game, helps Barcelona keep possession in tricky areas, he is brilliant on the ball and his timely interceptions help the Blaugrana regain possession.

The 30-year-old veteran midfielder does all the dirty work so that the likes of Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi can do the damage upfield. He has won 72 percent of his tackles in La Liga this season, which just further states his defensive authority. He doesn’t do much in terms of goals and assists, but what he does with the ball is that he keeps things simple and tidy.

Read: Luka Modric wins Ballon d’Or and ends dominance of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo

    #5 Fernandinho:

Newport County AFC v Manchester City – FA Cup Fifth Round Another player much similar to Busquets is the Brazilian Fernandinho. His the most important player for Pep Guardiola in Manchester City. He has been tremendously again for City this season. He just like Busquets conducts everything in the middle of the Sky Blues.

The 33-year-old operates as the deepest of the three midfielders and allows the likes of David Silva and Bernardo Silva to roam around and create chaos for upfield. The Brazilian is one of the most underrated performers in this brilliant City side, but his importance can be stated by the fact that he has won 75 percent of his tackles in the Premier League this season which is the most in this City side.

    #4 Tanguy Ndombele:

Lyon’s Ndombele has been brilliant for the team and could be making a big summer move. Ndombele has been a beast in the middle of the park for Lyon this season. The young Frenchman is the definition of a modern day midfielder. He has been brilliant both in the league and in the Champions League.

The 22-year-old plays as a defensive midfielder and has traits similar to his French compatriot Paul Pogba. He can drive through the midfield, pick out passes at will and has that swagger about his play. He has given 6 assists in the Ligue 1 this season, which is not bad for a defensive midfielder.

His stats in the Champions League are absolutely incredible. He has won 71 percent of his duels and a 100 percent of his aerial duels in Europe this season, which just tells you how hard he works off the ball. The Frenchman is now on the radar of Europe’s big boys and a huge summer move is on the cards.

    #3 Ivan Rakitic:

Rakitic has won 79% of his tackles in the La Liga this season. Rakitic has been brilliant for the Blaugrana this season. The Croatian had a wonderful World Cup and he has continued his form this season for Barcelona. The Croatian is one of the most underappreciated players in world football, but this season he has proved again that he is one of the best in the world.

The 31-year-old operates on the right side of the 3 man midfield and is the definition of a box to box midfielder. His work rate, tenacity and energy are indispensable to this Barcelona side. The Croatian has 9 assists and 5 goals to his name this season and has won about 79 percent of his tackles in the La Liga this season.

    #2 Bernardo Silva:

Bernardo Silva has been undroppable for Pep Guardiola. With Kevin de Bruyne ruled out for the majority of the season, it was time for Bernardo Silva to step up for Manchester City in their Belgian star’s absence. The little Portuguese has done just that. In fact he has been so great that Pep Guardiola described him as undroppable.

Silva has played mostly in the right midfield role for City and he has been running the show alongside Fernandinho and David Silva. The Portuguese is know for his attacking play, but his defensive stats are one a defender would be proud of.

In the Premier League, the Portuguese has won 75 percent of his tackles. He has scored a total of 10 goals and assisted 9 this season. The 24-year-old is full of tenacity and his energy is indispensable to this City side.

    #1 Paul Pogba:

The World Cup winner has been vital for Ole’s squad this season. After winning the World Cup, it was time for Pogba to step up at Manchester United, but at the start of the season, he was pretty inconsistent. But with the arrived of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Old Trafford, the big Frenchman has looked absolutely unstoppable in the middle of the park.

He has been producing insane stats for a midfielder. He has scored 14 goals this season, the most by any midfielder in the world and he has assisted 11. He has been involved in a total of 25 goals, which is again the highest by any midfielder in the world this season.

He has been creating chances, scoring goals and winning Manchester United matches on his own. Also, he is criticized for his lack of desire to defend. The stats suggest otherwise, the 26-year-old has won 64 percent of his tackles in the Premier League this season, which is not bad for a player who is creating so much on the other end.

  • EC will operationalise court order on ROPAA Bossman Asare

Dr Bossman Asare, a Deputy Commissioner of the Electoral Commission (EC), has stated that the Electoral Commission (EC) will not defy a court decision ordering it to operationalise the Representation of People Amendment Act (ROPAA) to allow Ghanaians resident abroad vote in national elections.

He explained that “the court ordered the EC to prepare a Constitutional Instrument (C.I) and lay it before Parliament within 12 months to operationalise ROPAA to franchise Ghanaians resident abroad to partake in national polls.

“We are complying with the order, our mission is to seek your opinion and advice on how best to implement ROPAA, hence the need for broader stakeholder consultations that will result in the best and effective implementation of ROPAA,” Dr Asare noted.

An Accra High Court presided by Justice Anthony Yeboah in 2017 had ruled in favour of some five Ghanaians in the Diaspora who sued the commission to compel it [EC] to implement ROPAA in order to vote in national elections.

Addressing ROPAA consultative meeting in Wa, he indicated that the EC could not act within the 12 months ultimatum given by the court because it was faced with the Lower Manya Krobo District election, referendum on creation of the six new regions, and other official duties.

Dr Asare said the commission applied for extension and another 12 months was granted to enable the EC lay a Legislative Instrument before Parliament for the implementation of ROPAA.

Dr Benjamin Kumbour, a member of ROPAA Consultative Committee, urged participants to give concrete suggestions that would lead to effective implementation of the Act and implored them to stop protracted arguments and condemnations against one another which would retard progress of discussions, effective and efficient implementation of ROPAA.

Read: Electoral structures robust to implement ROPAA – EC Deputy Chair

He said the 2017 high court ruling did not only franchise the five Ghanaians who sued the EC but extended the voting right to all other Ghanaians living in the Diaspora no matter their geographical location.

Abdul Shaqur Saeed, a participant, disagreed and suggested that the EC go back to court and make an appeal to reverse the ruling saying that “allowing Ghanaians outside to vote will cost the country a lot of money that could have been channeled into improving other sectors of the economy, if the EC will start piloting of ROPAA, it should start with neighbouring African countries before extending to European countries.”

  • Agric experts, scientists, converge on Accra to tackle army worms

Scientists and other experts in agriculture are meeting in Accra to find means of using technology (innovation platforms) to find a lasting solution to Fall Army worms and boost agriculture productivity in Africa.

Read: Focus on agric, industry to arrest cedi Ken Thompson

The gathering of the scientists, agriculturists, crop and livestock farmers and researchers, comes on the back of the destruction of farms by the Fall army worms that cost the Ghanaian economy an estimated $64 million and the entire Africa $13 billion between 2016-2018, according to figures from the Ministry of Food and Agriculture and the USAID Bureau for Food Security.

The three-day event forms part of Technologies for Africa Agricultural Transformation (TAAT) framework developed by the Africa Development Bank (AfDB) to foster the development of agriculture in Africa.

The meeting is training the first group of trainers on the establishment of innovation platforms as outreach instruments for scaling TAAT commodity technologies.

Participants are from Ghana, Nigeria, Cameroun, Liberia and Sierra Leone.

TAAT aims at enhancing the use of proven agricultural technologies among the stakeholders to foster the needed change through farm level productivity, value chain development among others.

    Eradication

Addressing the opening session, Dr Oluwole Fatunbi, the Lead Specialist, Innovation Systems and Partnerships of the Forum for Agriculture Research in Africa (FARA), said: “Fall Army worms get to hit us in the face when we least prepare for it on the continent.

Fall Army worms are fast affecting our maize, sorghum and other cereal crops.

A number of interventions have come from our development partners, but what TAAT is doing is to give it priority so that we can leverage existing knowledge and technology for controlling the Fall army worms,” he said.

The worms attacked cereal crops across the continent, threatening food security, but Dr Fatunbi said his projection was that if technologies being developed were well implemented, the effect of Fall army worms would reduce gradually and in two or three years, the plague would be eradicated.

“Within TAAT, we are not generating technologies, we are bringing the technologies down into the hand of users and create the enabling environment for the users to do so effectively,” he said.

    Broad-based impact

“We want to get agriculture technology to deliver broad-based impact, starting from the smallholder farmer to large-scale farmers and ultimately for agriculture to yield national development,” Dr Fatunbi said.

He said while many stakeholders in the agriculture space knew about how innovation platforms could transform agriculture, the challenge had been with how to operationalise the platform to increase productivity.

To ensure that the training yielded the desired result, he said after the training, the participants would be mandated to train others within a stipulated time.

“Within TAAT, we ensure that after the training, we mandate them to establish an innovation platform as a proof that they acquired the appropriate knowledge.

We also ensure that we provide the resources for it,” he said.

    Sustainability

In a speech read on his behalf, the acting Director of the Directorate of Agriculture Extension Services of the Ministry of Agriculture, Mr Theophilus Osei Owusu, touched on sustainability of innovation platforms.

“There is urgent need to incorporate this system into our agricultural extension service delivery with the participation of stakeholders along the agricultural value chain.

“What we need to do right now is to move the innovation platform beyond community level.

We should establish innovation platforms at the regional and national levels for commodities such as maize, rice and cassava.

This development will improve food and nutrition security and also our exports,” he said.
