  • Minnesota mosque attack: ‘White Rabbits’ militiamen plead guilty

Two members of a militia group known as the White Rabbits have admitted bombing a mosque in Minnesota in 2017.

Police say Michael McWhorter, 29, and Joe Morris, 23, wanted to scare Muslims into leaving the US.

The pair, who admitted a number of charges, including a failed attack on an abortion clinic, face up to 35 years in prison following a plea arrangement.

No-one was hurt in the attack on the Dar Al Farooq Islamic Center in a Minneapolis suburb.

A third man, 47-year-old Michael Hari, who is the alleged founder of the White Rabbits, is in custody and awaiting trial. He was not party to the plea arrangement.

Police say McWhorter confessed that the White Rabbits had wanted to “scare [Muslims] out of the country”, with the message “you’re not welcome here”.

According to the plea agreements, the men drove to the mosque, broke a window and threw a lit pipe bomb and gasoline mixture inside.

It is unclear why the pair, from Illinois, attacked the mosque in Minnesota.

The governor of Minnesota at the time, Mark Dayton, called the attack “a criminal act of terrorism”.

Jaylani Hussein, executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations in Minnesota, told AFP news agency: “These militia groups have zeroed in on the Muslim community. And a number of their blogs are overwhelmingly talking about the Muslim community as a threat and a threat to be eliminated.”

  • Sudan protests spread as death toll rises to 29

A 24-year-old man has died of his wounds during protests in Sudan as thousands of demonstrators continued their protests across several cities, calling on longtime ruler Omar al-Bashir, to step down.

Family members of the latest victim, Maawiya Bashir, told The Associated Press that he was shot in his home as he tried to shelter protesters being chased by government security forces.

With the man’s death, the number of fatalities since protests broke out in Sudan in mid-December has now reached 29, according to the governmental investigatory committee spokesman, Amer Mohamed Ibrahim.

According to the slain man’s son, Yahya, his father had just returned home from prayers when several protesters ran through the front gate behind him.

He said his father agreed to shelter the protesters, and shut the door behind them, then tried to prevent armed members of government security forces from entering.

A shot was fired through the gate, hitting Bashir and knocking him to the ground.

Seham Maawiya Bashir, daughter of Bashir, is demanding justice for her father.

“He didn’t go out to the protests or do anything. He was in his home, how could a bullet come through the door and hit him, if he wasn’t even a protester. The bullet hole is still in the door,” she said.

    ‘Biggest turnout’ of demonstrators

Al Jazeera’s Mohamed Vall, reporting from Khartoum, said that there have been at least 10 areas confirmed by Al Jazeera to have held protests on Thursday.

The protests, he said, were “larger than ever before” in Khartoum and at least three major cities, including in Port Sudan.

There have also been reports of protests in smaller villages.

“By far, we can say that this is the biggest turnout of protesters across the country since the beginning of this movement.”

Protests began in mid-December over price hikes, but have morphed into calls for President Bashir, who has been in power for 29 years, to step down.

Since then, authorities in Sudan have used tear gas, rubber bullets, live ammunition and batons to quell the unrest.

Authorities have imposed emergency laws and night-time curfews in some cities and suspended classes in schools and universities in others.

They have also arrested opposition leaders, doctors, journalists, lawyers and students along with some 800 protesters.

Rights groups said as many as 40 people, including children, have been killed in the clashes, most by gunshot wounds.

Al-Bashir’s government has acknowledged only 24 deaths.

  • Trump campaign associate Roger Stone arrested in Florida

Roger Stone, a confidant of US President Donald Trump, was arrested on Friday morning in the special counsel’s Russia investigation and was charged with lying to Congress and obstructing the probe.

The seven-count indictment against Stone, a self-proclaimed “dirty trickster,” is the first criminal case in months from special counsel Robert Mueller and provides the most detail to date about how Trump campaign associates were aware in the summer of 2016 that emails had been stolen from the Hillary Clinton campaign and wanted them released.

Read: US shutdown: Trump delays State of the Union address

It alleges that unnamed senior Trump campaign officials contacted Stone to ask when the stolen emails might be disclosed.

Instead, it accuses him of witness tampering, obstruction and false statements about his interactions related to WikiLeaks’ release.

Some of those false statements were made to the House intelligence committee, according to the indictment.

The indictment lays out in detail Stone’s conversations about stolen Democratic emails posted by WikiLeaks in the weeks before the Republican beat Democratic opponent Hillary Clinton.

Mueller’s office has said those emails, belonging to Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta, were hacked by Russian intelligence officers.

Stone is scheduled to appear in court in Florida later Friday. The indictment had been expected.

Stone has said for months he was prepared to be charged, though he has denied any wrongdoing.

A grand jury for months had heard from witnesses connected to Stone. And the intelligence committee last year voted to release a transcript of Stone’s testimony to Mueller as a precursor to an indictment.

The decision by Reverend Isaac Owusu Bempah, Founder and leader of the Glorious Word and Power Ministry International to apologise to the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Dr. Osmanu Nuhu Sharubutu following his death prophecies on 31st December watch night service has not gone down well with his colleagues in the ministry.

A video obtained by MyNewsGh.com from Kumasi-based televangelist and founder of the Ebenezer Miracle Worship Centre Ebenezer Adarkwah Yiadom, he is seen castigating his colleague for backing down on his prophesy wondering if indeed it was from God in the first place.

According to him, the world over and since the inception of Christianity, no prophet irrespective of the circumstance apologized for a prophesy if what the person who is a vessel used by God is telling his congregation what has been communicated to him.

“Where have you heard that God has given you prophesy and after you have the delivered it and the consequences thereof you go and beg? The foolishness in Ghana is just becoming too much…I am not afraid of anyone. You go and make a prophesy and go and beg what kind of practice is that? You have disgraced Christianity for going to apologise with a bull and sheep”, lashed.

  • Price of shea nut goes up in Tamale

The price of shea nuts has gone up in the Northern Regional capital, Tamale which has compelled processors and traders to increase the prices of their products.

A bowl of shea nut, which was sold at GH¢5.00 now sells at GH¢7.00; a bag that ranged in price from GH¢160.00 to GH¢170.00 now goes for GH¢180.00 to GH¢200.

In view of this, the price of 330 grammes of processed shea butter has increased from GH¢10.00 to GH¢15.00; while that of the 25kg has been increased from GH¢300.00 to GH¢370.00 for grade A export standard.

Read: World Vision invest US$380,000 to improve shea butter business in Upper East Region

The grade B for local consumption has gone up from GH¢10.00 to GH¢13.00 per kilogramme, as checks by the B&FT revealed.

Large-scale shea pickers around Kumbungu, Gushiegu, Karaga, Savelugu, Nanton, Bole and other parts of the Northern Region are likely to suffer losses this year if there is no rain in this season.

The lack of a Shea board to regulate the floor price for shea nut purchases in the region at the farm gate level has been a problem to the pickers, because the activities of middlemen contribute to the hikes.

Read: Shea industry gets GH¢9.2m boost from EXIM Bank

Lack of storage facilities for the picked shea-nuts has also meant that they end up selling their produce at low prices to prevent them from being destroyed.

Though the Shea nut Farmers Association, which is the nationally recognised body representing the interests of shea nut farmers across the length and breadth of this country, played a key role, lack of policy guidelines continues to be a hindrance to the sector.

The entire Northern Region, for the past three years, has been experiencing drought because the rains are not forthcoming as expected.

Some of the frustrated retailers, including Isaac Amoah and Alhassan Iddrisu, bemoaned the situation and said business is down. They said customers are alarmed by the price hikes.

A shea expert, Prof. Seidu Alhassan, who is also the Pro Vice-Chancellor of the University for Development Studies (UDS), told the B&FT that the hike in prices is due to the high demand from both the local and international markets.

“Shea has been recognised as one of the best commodities in the market, which has no side-effect but the inability of the pickers to access the quality and quantity needed by the investors is the problem.”

According to him, when the demand is high, obviously the price will also go high due to the scarcity that might be encountered on the market.

“In northern Ghana in general, and the Tamale Metropolis in particular, many women process shea butter as their main source of income; and in recognition of this a number of stakeholders, including the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies, Non-Governmental Organisations, the National Board for Small Scale Industries and other private businesses, have taken keen interest in the sector culminating in the provision of resources to support the industry,” he said.

“As part of efforts to support the economic empowerment of women in general and shea butter processors in particular, there is a need to help establish more shea butter extraction centres for the women processing groups to enhance their activities,” he added.

He stressed that the fruits contribute to food security, particularly for the rural poor, especially since their ripening coincides with the lean season of food production.

  • Venezuela crisis: US vows to ‘disconnect’ Maduro’s funding

The Trump administration is trying to cut Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro’s revenue streams, US National Security Adviser John Bolton says.

The comments come one day after Mr Maduro cut diplomatic ties with the US.

He was angry after they recognised an opposition figure, Juan Guaidó, as interim president on Wednesday.

Mr Bolton told reporters outside the White House the issue was “complicated” but they were working on a plan to funnel funds to Mr Guaidó instead.

    Read: Angola decriminalises homosexuality

Figures from the Trump administration are continuing to try and compound pressure on Mr Maduro as the international community remains divided in its support of him.

Russia has condemned foreign powers for backing Mr Guaidó, saying the move violated international law and was a “direct path to bloodshed”.

Mike Pompeo, the US Secretary of State, has now requested a UN Security Council meeting be held on the issue on Saturday.

At a meeting of the Organisation of American States (OAS) on Thursday he described Mr Maduro’s government as “morally bankrupt” and “undemocratic to the core”.

    How did the row develop?

Large protests were organised against, and some in support of, Mr Maduro on Wednesday.

At one demonstration in Caracas, Mr Guaidó, Venezuela’s National Assembly leader, declared himself as the country’s interim leader.

He said articles within the country’s constitution allow him to assume interim power because he believed Mr Maduro’s election, and therefore presidency, was invalid.

He has vowed to lead a transitional government and hold free elections.

Within minutes of his declaration, Mr Trump recognised Mr Guaidó as the country’s legitimate head of state. A number of South American nations, as well as Canada and the UK, have now followed suit.

The government of Mr Maduro, who has maintained the military’s support, described Mr Guaidó’s actions as an attempted coup.

Mr Maduro has labelled the US comments a “big provocation” and broken off diplomatic relations.

On Thursday, he ordered the closure of Venezuela’s embassy and consulates in the US.

The US state department meanwhile has ordered non-essential staff to leave Venezuela.

Mr Maduro’s sovereignty has been backed by China and Russia, who both have strategic interests in his country’s economy.

Others, including Mexico and Turkey, have also stood by Mr Maduro.

A Caracas-based NGO, the Observatory of Social Conflict, says that at least 26 people have been killed in demonstrations so far this week.

He said at about 2245 hours that day, a 43-year old driver of the bus, Jamiu Shaibu, reported to the Kintampo Police that they had been robbed at a section of the road by armed men with SB short guns and cutlasses.

Chief Inspector Oppong said the robbers blocked the road with timber logs and clubs to rob the drivers and passengers in turns whilst shooting indiscriminately.

He said the Kintampo Police Patrol Team rushed to the scene but the robbers had already escaped.

  • Adolf Hitler paintings of ‘no artistic value’ on sale in Berlin

Three watercolour paintings attributed to the former German Nazi leader Adolf Hitler are being auctioned in Berlin.

The separate works depict a mountain scene, a river and a distant figure sat beneath a tree.

The watercolours were created in the early 20th Century while Hitler, later guilty of some of the worst crimes in history, worked as a painter in Munich.

Auctioneers said that while they had “no artistic value”, the pictures could sell for thousands of euros.

Strong demand is expected from online bidders in the UK, Scandinavia, the US and Russia.

The paintings’ elderly sellers reportedly did not want to be identified.

“If you walk down the Seine and see 100 artists, 80 will be better than this,” Heinz-Joachim Maeder, a spokesperson for the Kloss auction house in Berlin, told Reuters.

“The value of these objects and the media interest is because of the name at the bottom,” he added.

Before World War One, in which he fought, Mr Hitler worked in Vienna as a casual labourer and an artist, drawing postcards and paintings.

He was twice rejected from the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts.

In his book Mein Kampf, he claimed to have produced as many as three paintings a day.

While in power, Hilter allegedly ordered the collection and destruction of his artworks, but several hundred are known to still exist.

Many are held by the US Army, which confiscated them at the end of World War Two. The collection has never been exhibited.

Others are held in the private collections of individuals and institutions. One of the largest is housed at the International Museum of World War II in the US.

In 2014, a watercolour of a registry office in Munich sold for €130,000 ($148,000) at an auction in Nuremberg, southern Germany. The picture came with a bill of sale and a signed letter by Nazi military commander Albert Bormann.

Others have been auctioned for lower amounts. Ludlow’s of Shropshire sold a collection of 13 artworks in 2009 for €130,000. All were signed: A. Hitler.

  • Emiliano Sala: Search for footballer and pilot called off

The search for missing footballer Emiliano Sala and pilot David Ibbotson has been called off after rescuers failed to find their plane.

Cardiff City’s Argentine striker, 28, and Mr Ibbotson, from Crowle, Lincolnshire, were on the aircraft that disappeared from radar on Monday.

After three days of scouring the English Channel, authorities made the decision to abandon the search.

Read: Search for missing Cardiff City player Emiliano Sala and pilot resumes

But Sala’s sister Romina pleaded with rescuers to keep looking for him.

Guernsey Police tweeted at 15:15 GMT to say rescuers were “no longer actively searching” for the plane.

Harbourmaster Capt David Barker said the chances of survival were “extremely remote”.

“We reviewed all the information available to us, as well as knowing what emergency equipment was on board, and have taken the difficult decision to end the search,” he added.

Read: Emiliano Sala: Fears Cardiff player on missing plane

Sala became Cardiff City’s record signing on Saturday, joining from Ligue 1 club Nantes for a fee of £15m.

He had returned to the French city to say a final farewell to his former teammates before taking the plane back to the Welsh capital.

The single-engine plane carrying Sala and Mr Ibbotson left Nantes, north-west France, at 19:15 on Monday and had been flying at 5,000ft (1,500m) over the Channel Islands when it disappeared off radar near the Casquets lighthouse, near to Alderney.

It lost contact while at 2,300ft (700m) and disappeared off radar near the Casquets lighthouse, infamous among mariners as the site of many shipwrecks, eight miles (13km) north-west of Alderney.

Sala reportedly sent a WhatsApp voice message before the flight. Sounding conversational and jokey, he said he was “so scared” and: “I’m on a plane that seems like it is breaking apart.”

Rescue crews have searched about 1,700 square miles of land and sea in the Channel Islands in the past three days, covering Burhou, the Casquets, Alderney, the north coast of the Cherbourg Peninsula, north coast of Jersey and Sark.

  • You need KP Boateng more than he needs you – JE Sarpong to Kwesi Appiah

Veteran Ghanaian coach J.E Sarpong has urged Coach Kwesi Appiah to swallow his pride and call-back Barcelona new recruit, Kevin-Prince Boateng into the Black Stars.

The 31-year-old, who is under indefinite suspension from national duties, was sacked from camp alongside Sulley Muntari during the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil for verbally assaulting head coach James Kwesi Appiah.

Read: Kwesi Appiah details what Kotoko should expect against Al Hilal in Sudan

Although Appiah has revealed his readiness to welcome Kevin-Prince Boateng back if he formally apologizes for the unfortunate incident, Coach Sarpong believes the Technical handlers of the Black Stars should call him (Boateng) but it shouldn’t be after he apologizes.

“If the coach is willing to work with him, he should call him but it shouldn’t be like an apology first before he hands him a call up into the national team”, he told Agyenkwa FM in Kumasi.

“I even doubt if Kevin-Prince Boateng will avail himself for call up because he is now enjoying his footballing career”, he stated.

Read: I’ll recall KP Boateng if he apologizes – Kwesi Appiah

“Ghana needs Kevin more than Kevin needs Ghana now so we should swallow our pride and call him if the coach will need him in his game plan”, Coach J.E Sarpong emphasized.

“Kwasi Appiah is a humble coach and does not talk much in public but I believe he might call Kevin in the coming days”

“Since Gyan is not scoring these days I believe inviting Kevin to partner either Gyan or Emmanuel Boateng will be useful to Ghana”

“Quality players are troublesome but they are manageable so the technical handlers of the national team should be able to manage him and they will get their results”, he ended.

Boateng made his Barcelona bow in a 2-0 loss against Sevilla on Wednesday, January 23, in the quarterfinals of Copa del Rey. He has been capped 15 times for Ghana and boasts of two goals.

  • GHC400m subsidy for 1 million farmers

Government is providing GHC400 million by way of subsidy to at least 1,000,000 beneficiary farmers under the Planting for Food and Jobs Programme (PFJ) this year.

In view of this, government is to make available 320, 000 metric tonnes of organic and inorganic fertilizers for distribution to these farmers.

Over 40 companies who took part in a bidding process have been selected to supply the inorganic and organic fertilizers.

Read: A model for reaching poor farmers, reducing subsidy costs in Ghana

These companies shall import, clear the fertilizers from the port of entry, and distribute to the regions and districts for sale to farmers by their registered sales agents.

Minister of Agriculture, Dr Owusu Afriyie Akoto, disclosed this when he launched the 2019 PFJ National Fertilizer Subsidy programme yesterday.

The country loses $12 million annually as a result of smuggled seeds and fertilizers to neigbouring countries.

Read: COCOBOD incurred GHC2 billion debt in 2017 for cocoa price subsidy

In view of this, the sector minister urged all farmers, input distributors and all stakeholders to play their roles under the programme effectively to make sure that the farm inputs government is paying are put to good use for the benefit of Ghanaians and not smuggled out to neighbouring countries.

According to him, in PJF, government has a dream to maximize food production in the country, stating that following the successive successful campaigns in 2017 and 2018, the nation is benefitting from bumper a harvest which has enabled Ghana to export excess foodstuffs such as maize, sorghum, cowpea, plantain and yam to Burkina Faso and Cote d’Ivoire.

He said in addition to maize, rice, sorghum, soybean, groundnut and cassava that were promoted in 2017 and 2018, crops such as cowpea, orange flesh sweet potato, plantain and yam have been added under the 2019 campaign.

Vegetable crops such as cabbage, lettuce, carrot, cucumber, tomato, pepper and onion, he said, will still be promoted in 2019.

As part of the launch, the ministry announced the selling prices of the various inputs under 2019 campaign with effect from yesterday January 23, 2019.

All types of NPK inorganic fertilizer is priced at GHC75 per 50 Kg bag and Urea going for GHC70 per 50Kg bag.

For organic fertilizers, Granular, Compost and Liquid are priced at for GHC45 per 25 kg bag, GHC20 per 50kg bag and GHC19 per litre respectively.

Farmers and general public are consequently advised to report any dealer selling subsidized fertilizers above the announced prices to any agricultural official or to the nearest security agency.

With seeds, maize (OPV), rice, sorghum and groundnut seeds are priced at GHC2 per Kg whiles maize (hybrid), soybean and cowpea are priced at GHC3 per Kg.

Following the launch, all participating fertilizer and seed companies are being requested to commence distribution to the regions, districts and farming communities.

    Operational modalities

To ensure efficiency and value for money and to minimize smuggling in the distribution of fertilizers to beneficiary farmers under the PFJ, the ministry will roll out the following implementation modalities with the support of National Builders Corps (NABCO) officials.

NABCO officials will be placed at all retail outlets in the three northern Regions to supervise and record the quantities of fertilizers and seeds sold to farmers.

Sales records of the retailers will be reconciled with NABCO officials and invoices generated and submitted by the companies to the Ministry for payment.

Additionally, all fertilizers and seeds will be bagged with PFJ labels and fertilizers to be sold in the three Northern regions will be bagged in only 25 Kg bags and those to be sold in the southern sector will be bagged in 50 kg bags.

Also, all copies of way bills on all fertilizers and seeds consignments must be submitted to the Regional Coordinating Councils through the Regional Directors of Agriculture.

He indicated that the ministry will continue to support institutions such as universities, second cycle institutions, churches, prisons and chiefs by providing them with subsidized fertilizers, seeds and tractors where necessary.

On the threat of armyworm outbreak, he said the Task Force that was put in place to tackle the problem has been successful in their mission, pledging that the ministry will continue to stay alert to deal with the problem if they should reemerge.

Dr Akoto appealed to the public, especially farmers, to report immediately to their extension officers and district authorities when they detect the outbreak.

  • Why Barcelona signed Kevin-Prince Boateng

One of the more surprising transfers of the window saw Barcelona sign 31-year-old former Tottenham and Portsmouth player Kevin-Prince Boateng from Italian side Sassuolo.

Since 2016, the journeyman has played for AC Milan, Las Palmas, and Eintracht Frankfurt, and only joined Sassuolo in the summer.

The ex-Ghana international played in midfield for most of his career, but became a striker during his previous spell in La Liga – with Las Palmas in 2016-17, when he scored 10 goals.

Read: Kevin-Prince Boateng receives brand-new Audi Q8 after signing for Barcelona

He has scored five goals this season for Sassuolo, who sit 12th in Italy’s top flight.

His move to Barcelona is a six-month loan deal, with an upfront fee of £870,000, and the option to make it permanent for £7.1m in the summer.

Is the deal as bizarre as it seems? What is the logic behind it? Experts on a European football special of the BBC Radio 5 live Football Daily looked at the “far-fetched” signing.

Read: Kevin Prince Boateng’s Barcelona debut ends in defeat

‘He offers something different’ – why turn to Boateng?

Spanish football journalist Guillem Balague said: “Barcelona manager Ernesto Valverde wants a number nine with experience in Spain – so the list gets smaller. He wants someone who could make an impact straight away and who will understand the role.

“He admits he won’t start. He comes in as a number nine who offers something different from Luis Suarez. Especially if they go through in the Copa del Rey – and Suarez has problems with his knee. He will be competitive in games – and in training. All of the sudden you have someone else biting.

“When Valverde rang Quique Setien, his former Las Palmas manager, on Friday and said ‘how about this guy?’ Setien said ‘in the big games, he will give you more than anyone else’. That was the decisive factor.”

‘Shows how far down the club has come’ – problems at Barcelona?

Read: Kevin-Prince Boateng content with bench role at Barcelona

Independent chief football writer Miguel Delaney said: “It’s not surprising in the context of Barca’s recent moves. This follows on from Paulinho’s move from the Chinese Super League last season.

“It’s an amazing thing to say considering Barcelona have been maybe the most glamorous team in football for the past 15 years but they have to resort to these cut-price deals. The size of their wage bill means they’ve had to balance signings like Philippe Coutinho and Ousmane Dembele with players to bolster their numbers in deals like this.”

French journalist Julien Laurens said: “It shows how far down this club has come. Even a club like Barcelona have to be careful with money. I’m sure they’d love to sign a £100m player for that role.

“They would have liked to get Paris St-Germain midfielder Adrien Rabiot [who is a free agent in the summer]. But they can’t do it in January. But they can find someone like Boateng.

“I find it incredible. They won the Champions League with the MSN [Lionel Messi, Suarez and Neymar] up front and now they’re signing Boateng.”

‘Not as crazy as they say’ – could it prove a shrewd signing?

Read: Barcelona unveil shock signing Kevin-Prince Boateng

Italian football journalist James Horncastle thinks it will be a good move.

“In the first six weeks of the season in Serie A, the best player in the league was Kevin-Prince Boateng. That will surprise a lot of people but he was playing exceptionally well.

“He’s never parted on bad terms with his managers – they all respect him and think he’s got a different skill-set from people in his position.

“You can turn your nose up all you like but even if it’s a short-term rental, I don’t think there’s any risk added to it. They can only gain from it or ultimately he can go back to Sassuolo and that’s fine.

“It looks far-fetched; it is a surprise. It’s not as crazy as people say. I don’t think anyone expects him to start every game and score 50 goals. It’s a stop-gap situation.

“People at Sassuolo said he was a leader who spoke several different languages and could be a reference point for other players. People see him as bling but he’s a pretty level-headed thoughtful footballer.”

Balague said he is reminded of Barcelona’s signing of 32-year-old Celtic striker Henrik Larsson in 2004. The Swede scored 19 goals over two seasons and won two La Liga titles and the Champions League.

“Remember Larsson?” said Balague. “We’re talking about a former AC Milan player [in Boateng], someone with experience. Why not?

“He will make an impact straight away and knows he won’t be a regular. Larsson understood that was his role. So will Boateng. I think it’s a left-field but clever signing.”

It ranked countries based on perceptions about Adventure, Citizenship, Cultural Influence, Entrepreneurship, Heritage, Movers, Open for Business, Power and Quality of Life.

The country recorded its highest score; 4.2 out of 10 under the metric – ‘Open for Business’ on account of perceived cheap manufacturing costs, a lack of transparency in government practices and a relatively favourable tax environment.

A set of 65 country attributes terms that can be used to describe a country and that are also relevant to the success of a modern nation were identified. Attributes by nation were presented in a survey of more than 20,000 people from across the globe. Participants assessed how closely they associated an attribute with a nation.

Each country was scored on each of the 65 country attributes based on a collection of individual survey responses. The more a country was perceived to exemplify a certain characteristic in relation to the average, the higher that country’s attribute score and vice versa. These scores were normalized to account for outliers and transformed into a scale that could be compared across the board.

    Survey Participants

A total of 20,301 individuals from 36 countries in four regions – the Americas, Asia, Europe and the Middle East and Africa – were surveyed. Of the respondents, 11,238 were informed elites and 5,963 were business decision-makers. Some respondents were considered both informed elites and business decision-makers.

  • Oscars 2019: Five female-directed films that were missed

The Oscar nominations were announced on Tuesday, and there was a strong showing for films with women in lead roles.

Both of this year’s most-nominated films – Roma and The Favourite – have female leads.

But it was a different story in the best director category, where all the nominees were men.

“It was an anticipated takeaway from this year’s Oscar nominations announcement, but that doesn’t make it any less unfortunate,” wrote Kristopher Tapley in Variety.

The lack of women nominated for best director is “immensely disappointing”, Liz Tucker, chair of Women in Film and Television UK, tells BBC News.

“It just shows how much work we still have to do, and it’s heartbreaking really that some extraordinary work has been overlooked yet again by the Academy.”

Read: Oscars 2019: This year’s snubs, shocks, surprises and curiosities

In the 91-year history of the Academy Awards, only five women have ever been nominated for best director.

After this year’s nominations, some argued that female directors should be recognised – but only on merit, rather than for the sake of balance.

“Can we stop focusing on gender and focus on talent instead?” asked one female Twitter user on Tuesday after the Oscar nominations.

“To include a woman just to fill a female quota is sexist and an insult to all women. So what if there were only men nominated? Their movies were simply better; that’s it. Stop interpreting everything as sexist/racist.”

But Tucker argues: “It seems difficult to believe that, on merit, only five women have ever been in that best director category.

“We’re not asking for special favours here… One’s not disputing the [best picture nominees] are all great films, but are they the best films?

“My favourite film of the year was Can You Ever Forgive Me?, and I’m not saying that because it’s got a female director. I only discovered that after I watched it.”

So why do so few women get nominated in the best director category?

In Variety, Tapley suggested films directed by women don’t get the same promotional push from studios during awards season.

Tucker adds: “How people get nominated is a deeply political process, the amount of money behind campaigns… and it can still be a bit of an old boys’ network.”

And there is the fact that so few films are directed by women in the first place.

Just four of the top 100 films at the US box office last year had female directors – A Wrinkle In Time (Ava DuVernay), The Spy Who Dumped Me (Susanna Fogel), I Feel Pretty (Abby Kohn) and Blockers (Kay Cannon).

That’s fewer than in 2017, when women directed 8% of the top 100 films.

“I think there’s still a sense that women are a safe pair of hands, but if you want to get that glittery stardust, you need to go to a male director,” Tucker says.

Five female directors who could have made the Oscars shortlist

    1. Debra Granik (Leave No Trace)

Previously nominated for co-writing the screenplay for her 2010 feature Winter’s Bone, Granik could potentially have been recognised again for Leave No Trace.

The film, about an Iraq war veteran (Ben Foster) determined to live “off the grid” with his teenage daughter (Thomasin McKenzie), proved popular with critics and currently has a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Granik did not want for high-profile supporters either. Jane Campion, one of only five women to ever be nominated for the best director Oscar, said last month that “she should be part of the best director Oscar conversation”.

Traditionally, though, titles that launch at the Sundance Film Festival – as Leave No Trace did a year ago – tend to be forgotten by Academy members by the time they come to fill out their ballots.

2.Marielle Heller (Can You Ever Forgive Me?)

Another woman who would not have looked out of place on this year’s best director shortlist is Heller, the driving force behind darkly comic forgery drama Can You Ever Forgive Me?

Read: Ethiopia to host World Economic Forum in 2020

The 39-year-old Californian former actress made an eye-catching directorial debut in 2015 with coming-of-age drama The Diary of a Teenage Girl.

Can You Ever Forgive Me?, her second feature, has three nominations in all – one for adapted screenplay, in which Heller did not have a hand, and another two for stars Melissa McCarthy and Richard E Grant.

Yet Heller is unlikely to be ignored by the Academy for long. Her next film, a biopic of children’s TV host Fred Rogers starring two-time Oscar winner Tom Hanks, is already shaping up to be one of 2020’s leading awards contenders.

    3. Lynne Ramsay (You Were Never Really Here)

Scottish film-maker Ramsay is up for a Bafta next month for You Were Never Really Here, a grim and violent thriller about another war veteran, played by Joaquin Phoenix, who tracks down missing girls.

She is also in line for a best director prize at the Independent Spirit Awards, where her competition includes another two women – Tamara Jenkins and the aforementioned Debra Granik.

As accomplished as You Were Never Really Here is, however, it may have simply proved too dark for Oscar voters.

The film was Ramsay’s first project since Jane Got a Gun, a western starring Natalie Portman which she walked away from a day before shooting started.

    4) Josie Rourke (Mary Queen of Scots)

With two leading ladies boasting four past Oscar nominations between them, lavish production values and a pair of iconic queens at its centre, Mary Queen of Scots seemed to be destined for multiple Oscar nominations.

Yet its only citations are in the costume design and make-up and hairstyling categories, with Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robbie both left out of the actress and supporting actress line-ups.

Given Mary Queen of Scots is Josie Rourke’s film directing debut, it would have perhaps been optimistic to expect her to get a best director nomination right out of the gate.

As The Favourite’s 10 nominations show, though, Academy members are partial to heightened royal melodrama – something that might have worked more in Rourke’s favour had she had the genre to herself this year.

    5) Chloe Zhao (The Rider)

An outside bet for a best director nomination might have been 36-year-old Zhao, whose second feature The Rider has been quietly winning admirers since it made its debut at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival.

The film arrived in US cinemas in April and went on to win best feature at the Gotham Independent Film Awards, one of the first ceremonies of the awards “season”.

Beautifully photographed and boldly impressionistic, The Rider tells of a young cowboy, played by real-life rodeo rider Brady Jandreau, struggling to recover from a serious brain injury.

Zhao might have not landed an Oscar nod, but she shouldn’t be too down-hearted. Her next project is The Eternals, a superhero ensemble adventure for Marvel Studios.

  • Taraji Henson denies defending R. Kelly in Weinstein post

Taraji Henson says R. Kelly “should be muted” after a backlash against her post referencing Harvey Weinstein.

The Hidden Figures actor had compared the thousands of negative posts on the hashtag #MuteRKelly with the few on #MuteWeinstein on Instagram.

People accused her of defending Kelly, and said that a campaign against Mr Weinstein wouldn’t use the word “mute” because he’s not a musician.

Ms Henson has now tweeted that she believes “R. Kelly is guilty” of abuse.

Kelly, whose full name is Robert Sylvester Kelly, has been accused of decades of sexual and emotional abuse against women.

The allegations were the subject of a documentary series, Surviving R. Kelly, which came out earlier this month. The singer denies the claims.

Read: ‘R Kelly insisted I have a sex trainer’ – Victim

The #MuteRKelly campaign calls on people to boycott Kelly’s music – both recordings and performances.

Although the hashtag #MuteWeinstein isn’t commonly used, the allegations against Harvey Weinstein sparked a much wider online movement – #MeToo.

In her now-deleted Instagram story, Ms Henson wrote that she was “checking on these #mute for a friend”, before filming herself searching for the hashtag #MuteRKelly and coming up with more than 33,000 results.

Then, in another video, she searched for #MuteWeinstein – which only had one post.

In the final slide she wrote “hmmmmm”, with a thinking face emoji.

The post sparked a huge online backlash, with some followers likening Ms Henson to singer Erykah Badu – who recently took a moment out of a gig to say a prayer and send “unconditional love” to Kelly.

Some also said they would boycott the film What Men Want, which stars both Ms Henson and Ms Badu.

Dream Hampton, the documentary filmmaker behind Surviving R. Kelly, also addressed the actor in a tweet.

“You don’t really care about Weinstein,” she wrote. “You just want silence around R. Kelly.”

Read: R. Kelly accused of threatening one of his alleged victims

Ms Hampton also tweeted: “Plus Weinstein is on trial. For rape.”

Responding to the criticism, Ms Henson deleted her Instagram story and tweeted a clarification.

The #MuteRKelly campaign to limit the singer’s airplay was sparked after the allegations against him resurfaced last year – including in a BBC Three documentary.

In July 2018, Kelly responded with a 19-minute song called I Admit, in which he admitted to infidelity but denied claims of paedophilia and rape.

After Ms Hampton’s lengthy documentary was released earlier this month, it was announced that R. Kelly and the Sony-owned record label RCA had ended their working relationship.

  • Osaka beats Pliskova to reach second-straight Grand Slam final

US Open champion Naomi Osaka reached back-to-back Grand Slam finals with a hard-fought win over Czech seventh seed Karolina Pliskova at the Australian Open.

The Japanese fourth seed won 6-2 4-6 6-4 and will face Petra Kvitova, another Czech, in Saturday’s showpiece.

Osaka, 22, hit 15 aces and 56 winners in a confident display.

The semi-final was played under the Rod Laver Arena roof as temperatures touched 40C in Melbourne.

Osaka hit another forehand winner to give herself a match point at 40-30, shouting “come on” as she looked up to the sky and tried to compose herself, then hit what she thought was an 111mph ace down the middle.

After it was called out, Osaka challenged and clasped her hands together in hope as she watched the replay – and was left celebrating when Hawkeye showed the ball had clipped the line.

Asked about her feelings when Pliskova won the second set, Osaka said: “I kind of expected it a little because I’ve played her so many times and she has beaten me more than I’ve beaten her. I told myself to regroup and I managed to win.

The final will see Osaka and 28-year-old Kvitova, who has reached her first Grand Slam final since being stabbed in December 2016, battling for the world number one ranking.

Defeat ended 26-year-old Pliskova’s hopes of reaching her second Grand Slam final and setting up a first all-Czech final against her Fed Cup team-mate.

  • Delaying Brexit won’t solve anything, Theresa May tells MPs

Theresa May has told MPs attempting to delay Brexit that it would not “solve the situation”.

“The decision remains the same – the deal, no-deal or no Brexit,” she said at Prime Minister’s Questions.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn accused her of having a “closed mind” to other Brexit options, such as Labour’s plan for a customs union with the EU.

But the PM attacked him for refusing to meet her and said he did not “have a clue” what his own policy meant.

MPs are proposing alternative plans to the PM’s deal with the EU, including seeking an extension to the UK’s exit date – which is currently scheduled to happen at 23:00 GMT on 29 March.

But the prime minister has said the “right way” to rule out no-deal Brexit is to approve her withdrawal agreement.

Under current law, the UK will exit the EU on 29 March, whether or not a deal has been struck. The decision to leave was taken by 52% to 48% in a referendum in June 2016.
Corbyn and May trade barbs over Brexit

Read: Airbus warns of Brexit ‘harmful decisions’

Jeremy Corbyn used Prime Minister’s Questions to repeat his call for Mrs May to rule out a no-deal Brexit.

Mrs May attacked the Labour leader for refusing to take part in cross-party talks with her on the way forward.

“The Right Honourable Gentleman has been willing to sit down with Hamas, Hezbollah and the IRA without preconditions, yet he won’t meet me to talk about Brexit,” she told MPs.

Mr Corbyn said: “The door to her office may be open but the minds inside are completely closed.”

He said there could be a majority in the Commons for staying in a customs union, and it was also backed by business and the trade unions and some Tory MPs, so why not get behind it?

Mrs May said a customs union meant that business can export without facing red tape, and her proposed deal would deliver that, while allowing the UK to have its own trade policy.

And she suggested the Labour leader did not know what his policy meant and what the “implications” of it would be for UK trade.

Leading Brexiteer Jacob Rees-Mogg will tell a meeting later he is encouraged by “outbreaks of realism” over the Northern Ireland backstop.

The Conservative MP is expected to say he believes “commons sense and practicality will prevail” in order to reach “a feasible deal”.

After leaving Downing Street after a meeting with the government’s chief whip, former Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson said: “I think that there is every chance that if the UK now negotiates with conviction and if we really mean it this time we can secure the changes that we need.”

The prime minister’s supporters say they believe some opponents of Mrs May’s deal are now willing to consider backing it because of the moves by other MPs to delay Brexit.

Are there signs of movement from the EU?

Not on the Irish backstop – chief negotiator Michel Barnier has said the EU would not be willing to put a time limit on it.

But he said the backstop was not the “central issue” and the debate was now about the future shape of the UK’s relationship with the EU, after it leaves with a deal.

“We’re cooperating with the British government. Things could start moving rapidly,” Mr Barnier told The Luxembourg Times.

Read: Theresa May looks for way to break deadlock after Brexit deal

“We are ready to be more ambitious if the British decide to shift their red lines, for example by remaining in a customs union, or participating in the single market.

“I believe there is a readiness in London for that.”
What is going to happen next?

Next Tuesday MPs will get to vote on Theresa May’s way forward on Brexit, after rejecting her initial plan by a record-breaking 230 votes last Tuesday.

Mrs May is hoping to tweak the deal to address concerns about the Northern Irish “backstop” among her own backbenchers and Northern Ireland’s Democratic Unionist Party, which she relies on to keep her in power.

But MPs are attempting to take control of the Brexit process by tabling amendments to Mrs May’s plans.

  • Search for missing Cardiff City player Emiliano Sala and pilot resumes

The search for a Premier League footballer and a pilot whose plane vanished over the English Channel has resumed.

Cardiff City’s Argentine striker Emiliano Sala, 28, and pilot David Ibbotson were on the aircraft that disappeared from radar on Monday.

Rescuers made the decision to continue the search after a meeting on Thursday and will focus on coastal areas.

Guernsey Police said no trace of the plane had yet been found.

Tweeting on Thursday morning, the force said: “We are commencing a coastal search using the Channel Islands Air Search plane of Burhou, the Casquets, Alderney, the north coast of the Cherbourg Peninsula, north coast of Jersey and then back over Sark.”

But Guernsey harbour master Captain David Barker admitted the chances of finding either man alive had “faded to almost zero”.

He added: “As the Channel Islands air searcher said, the survival times for someone in the water is very low, we estimated that at around three hours, the time of survival in a life raft would be longer.

Read: Serena Williams knocked out of Australian Open by Karolina Pliskova

“No-one could be more concerned for these two men’s safety than myself… You can be sure that my focus is still on trying to deal with any hope of survival.”

The search was suspended on Wednesday night after a second full day of searching and Channel Islands Air Search chief officer John Fitzgerald said “even the most fit person” would only survive for a few hours in the water.

Football agent Mark McKay has confirmed he was involved in the travel arrangements for Sala.

He told Sky Sports News: “I can confirm that when Emiliano made myself and his agent Meissa N’Diaye aware that he wished to travel back to Nantes following his medical and signing on Friday, I began to look into arranging a private flight to take him to Nantes on Saturday morning.

“I have been in contact with officials from Cardiff and the player’s agent over these difficult past few days and will continue to do so.”

Sala was heading to the Welsh capital after signing for the Bluebirds from French club Nantes in a £15m deal.

The single-engine plane left Nantes, north-west France, at 19:15 on Monday and had been flying at 5,000ft (1,500m) over the Channel Islands when it disappeared off radar near the Casquets lighthouse, near to Alderney.

Sala reportedly sent a WhatsApp voice message before the flight. Sounding conversational and jokey, he said he was “so scared” and: “I’m on a plane that seems like it is breaking apart.”

His father Horacio Sala said: “As the hours go by it makes me think of the worse. I just want them to find him.”

On Wednesday night, Sevilla striker Wissam Ben Yedder dedicated his goal in the 2-0 win over Barcelona in the Copa del Rey quarter-final first leg to Sala.

After scoring, he pulled up his shirt to reveal the message: “To my brother, be strong, E. Sala”.

    What plane were they on?

The Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) said a PA-46-310P Malibu aircraft, registered in the United States, had a pilot and one passenger on board when it vanished.

It has begun an investigation, working with counterparts in the US, France and Argentina.

A spokesman said: “We will be gathering all the available evidence to conduct a thorough investigation. However, if the aircraft is not found it is likely to limit the scope of the investigation.”

The plane is owned by Southern Aircraft Consultancy Inc Trustee, in Bungay, Suffolk, according to the US Federal Aviation Administration database.

The company told the BBC it was the trustee of the plane but not its ultimate owner.

  • US shutdown: Trump delays State of the Union address

US President Donald Trump says he will not deliver his annual State of the Union speech until after the government shutdown is over.

On Wednesday House Speaker Nancy Pelosi withdrew an invitation for him to address Congress, saying government services should fully reopen first.

The shutdown has left 800,000 federal staff without pay since 22 December.

Mr Trump wants $5.7bn (£4.4bn) to build a wall on the US-Mexico border, but newly empowered Democrats have refused.

The row over border security has led to the longest government shutdown in US history.

    What did Mr Trump say?

Having initially said the speech should be “on time, on schedule, and very importantly, on location”, he conceded overnight that he could not deliver on his pledge.

He acknowledged Ms Pelosi’s refusal to allow Congress to host the State of the Union address until the shutdown – now in its 34th day – had been resolved.

“This is her prerogative,” he said.

Read: Trump cancels Nancy Pelosi foreign trip citing shutdown

Ms Pelosi responded with her own tweet saying she hoped Mr Trump would back a bill passed by the House of Representatives to fund the agencies affected by the shutdown.

“Please accept this proposal so we can re-open government, repay our federal workers and then negotiate our differences,” she said.

Democrats have argued that with so many federal employees furloughed – temporarily laid off – or working without pay, the high-profile State of the Union address, which involves both chambers of Congress and the president, would not be logistically feasible.

But Mr Trump has denied that there were any security concerns posed by the ongoing partial shutdown.

Read: Nancy Pelosi asks President Trump to reschedule state of the union address as shutdown grinds on

He also rejected suggestions that he could deliver the speech from the White House or another location.

    What is Pelosi’s position?

The Speaker, who is the third most powerful politician in the US, had invited Mr Trump at the start of January to address Congress on the agreed-upon date of 29 January.

“At that time, there was no thought that the government would still be shut down,” Mrs Pelosi said in her letter on Wednesday.

“I am writing to inform you that the House of Representatives will not consider a concurrent resolution authorising the President’s State of the Union address in the House Chamber until government has opened.”

“Again, I look forward to welcoming you to the House on a mutually agreeable date for this address when government has been opened.”

Mrs Pelosi had first asked for the State of the Union, a keynote agenda-setting speech by the president, to be delayed on 16 January, citing an unfunded Secret Service and Department of Homeland Security.

In retaliation, Mr Trump last week denied Mrs Pelosi use of military airplanes on a trip to Brussels and Afghanistan – less than an hour before her flight was due to depart.

He asked her to stay to negotiate an end to the partial US government shutdown.

    Games of chicken

Donald Trump said he wanted to deliver his State of the Union speech “on time, on schedule and on location”. He could have accomplished the first two without difficulty.

The Constitution is silent on the how the president “from time to time” must communicate with Congress.

The “location”, however, was to prove tricky. Ms Pelosi has near total control over her chamber of Congress.

While she did invite the president to speak earlier this month, the legislative action to allow the president to give his joint address has yet to be implemented.

Mrs Pelosi has said she’s not budging until the government reopens – and in this particular case, her word is final.

All this set up a game of chicken over a speech within the game of chicken over the shutdown. For the moment, polls show Americans holding the president responsible for the impasse.

But the fallout from this unprecedented State of the Union drama is unpredictable, to say the least.

  • Nigerian police officer tells gays: Leave country or face prosecution

A high-ranking Nigerian policewoman has warned gay people living in the country to leave or risk criminal prosecution.

Dolapo Badmos, a Chief Superintendent and spokeswoman for the Lagos State Police Command, made the comments on her personal Instagram account, which is set to private and has 125,000 followers.

“If you’re homosexually inclined, Nigeria is not a place for you,” Badmos wrote last week.

“There is a law (Same-sex Prohibition Act) here that criminalizes homosexual clubs, associations, and organizations with penalties of up to 14years (sic) in jail.

“So if you are homosexual in nature, leave the country or face prosecution,” wrote Badmos, who has attained celebrity status in the country due to her frequent social media posts.

Read: Nigerian police arrests 57 homosexuals

Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan signed the controversial Same Sex Marriage Prohibition Act (SSMPA) into law, despite widespread international objection.

Those found guilty of being in a same-sex relationship face up to 14 years in jail.

The law was widely condemned by human rights organizations such as Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch at the time, as well as the then United States Secretary of State, John Kerry.

Badmos’ comments are the latest reminder of the challenges facing members of the LGBT community in a country where the anti-gay law enjoys broad support among its citizens.

According to a survey of 2,000 individuals conducted by The Initiative for Equal Rights (TIERs), a Nigeria-based human rights organization, about 90% of Nigerians support the continued enforcement of the SSMPA.

Following her post, Badmos received scores of comments, with most of them expressing support for the proposed prosecution of gay people living in Nigeria.

“It is illegal and ungodly,” one user wrote. Another user said, “we must say no to lesbianism and homosexuality it’s evil.” Badmos did not respond to CNN’s requests for clarification on her comments.

Read: US Supreme Court allows Trump military transgender ban

A spokesman for Lagos State police declined to comment and referred the inquiry back to Badmos. Olumide Makanjuola, executive director at TIERs, told CNN the Instagram post is tantamount to inciting violence against LGBTQ people in Nigeria, calling her comments “unacceptable.”

“Police should be wary with their statement and if they incite violence. What she said is out of line,” Makanjuola said.

Homophobia is widespread in many African countries. More than half of the countries on the continent have enacted laws that make it illegal to be gay and in several, including Somalia and South Sudan, homosexuality is punishable by death.

A 2013 Pew Research survey found that 98% of people in Nigeria believe LGBTQ people should not be accepted by society.

However, a 2017 survey by NOI Polls commissioned by TIERs showed a seven percent increase in the acceptance rates of LGBTQ people in Nigeria when compared to a similar survey from two years earlier.

Many of the people who commented under Badmos’ post also singled out an openly transgender individual, who is prominent on social media, and called for their arrest.

To address this challenge, Dr. Afriyie Akoto said the Soil Research Institute (SRI) in collaboration with his Ministry has been able to develop crop-specific fertilizer recommendations for maize, sorghum, rice, soybean, cassava and vegetables for the Guinea Savanna and Forest Transitional Agro-ecological zones of the country.

Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto assured his outfit will “vigorously promote the use of the crop specific fertilizer recommendations under the 2019 campaign”.

    Fall Armyworm invasion

Meanwhile, the minister has revealed his outfit is confident of reporting no case of fall armyworm invasion in 2019. With 14,000 hectares of farmlands devastated by the fall armyworm invasion, Agric Minister stated massive spraying programs are underway to avert any occurrence this year.
