  • Turkey readies international probe into Jamal Khashoggi killing

Turkey has said it is planning to launch an international investigation into the murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi and will take further steps in the coming days.

Speaking at a youth meeting in Istanbul on Monday, Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said Saudi Arabia has not shared with Turkey any information from its own probe regarding the Washington Post writer’s murder.

Khashoggi, a critic of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, was killed by a Saudi hit squad on October 2 shortly after he entered his country’s consulate in Istanbul. He was dismembered inside the building in what Turkey called a “premeditated murder” orchestrated by the Saudi government.

Read: Jamal Khashoggi murder trial opens in Saudi Arabia

Saudi officials have countered that claim, insisting Khashoggi died in a “rogue operation” after initially claiming he had left the consulate before vanishing.

Cavusoglu said his country’s investigation had forced Saudi Arabia to recognise the assassination of Khashoggi, and accused Western countries of trying to cover up the crime.

“We see how those, who speak of freedom of press in the world, cover this thing up when they see money,” Cavusoglu said.

“Now we have made preparations for an international probe in the coming days. We will take the necessary steps,” he added, saying Turkey is well aware of the difficulties in shedding light on the murder.

    Highest levels

Despite a joint investigation with Saudi officials looking at their consulate in Istanbul, the consul’s residence and several other locations, the whereabouts of Khashoggi’s remains are still unknown.

Ankara has repeatedly asserted the order was issued by the highest levels of the Saudi government and that the Saudi hitmen did not act on their own.

Turkey also demanded that Saudi Arabia extradite those accused of carrying out the murder to be tried in Turkish courts.

The Turkish authorities repeated the request after Riyadh announced early this month the start of the trial of 11 defendants, including five who the Saudi prosecution is seeking the death penalty for.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Sunday his country was still gathering facts to uncover those involved in Khashoggi’s killing.

In a television interview with the US media group, Sinclair, he said the relationship with Saudi Arabia could be maintained and those responsible for Khashoggi’s killing should be held accountable.

  • Greenland’s ice melting rate reaching a ‘tipping point’

Climate change is causing Greenland ice masses to melt faster, losing four times more ice since 2003, a new study says.

According to research published on Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the ice loss in 2012 – more than 400 billion tonnes – reached nearly four times the rate in 2003.

The largest sustained ice loss came from southwest Greenland, a region previously not seen as a crucial actor in rising sea levels as it is mostly devoid of large glaciers.

Read: World to miss 2020 climate ‘turning point’ – Researchers

“We knew we had one big problem with increasing rates of ice discharge by some large outlet glaciers,” said Michael Bevis, the study’s lead author and a professor of geodynamics at Ohio State University.

“Now we recognise a second serious problem: increasingly large amounts of ice mass are going to leave as meltwater, as rivers that flow into the sea,” he said.

The melting of surface mass, which the study’s authors said was a consequence of global warming, is set to “become a major future contributor to sea level rise.”

Read: Nigerian President calls for global action on climate change, Lake Chad crisis

“The only thing we can do is adapt and mitigate further global warming – it’s too late for there to be no effect,” Bevis said, adding “we are watching the ice sheet hit a tipping point”.

To analyse changes in ice mass, the study used data from NASA’s gravity recovery and climate experiment (known as Grace) and GPS stations scattered across Greenland.

In December 2018, another study published by scientific journal Nature found that run-off from Greenland’s ice sheet, which in places is more than 1.6 kilometres thick, now occurs at a volume 33 percent greater than the 20th century alone.

If all of Greenland’s vast ice sheet was to melt, global sea levels would rise by seven meters.

    Antarctica ice loss

It was the second alarming report on the impact of climate change on sea level rise in a week. On January 15 Eric Rignot, chair of Earth system science at the University of Irvine, published a study warning that Antarctica is melting about six times more a year now than 40 years ago.

The sea level increased more than 1.4 centimetres between 1979 and 2017.

“As the Antarctic ice sheet continues to melt away, we expect multi-metre sea level rise from Antarctica in the coming centuries,” Rignot said.

A rise of 1.8 metres by 2100 – as some scientists forecast in worst-case scenarios – would flood many coastal cities home to millions of people.

The total amount of ice in the Antarctic, if it all melted, would be enough to raise sea levels 57 metres.

Warming ocean water will only speed up ice loss in the future, and analysts say sea levels will continue to mount for centuries, no matter what humans do now to rein in climate change.

Recent research has shown oceans are heating up more quickly than previously thought, setting new heat records in the last few years.

  • Zimbabwe president abandons Davos trip amid violence

Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa has broken off a trip to Europe amid violent protests in his home country.

Mr Mnangagwa had been due to attend the Davos economic summit where he was expected to seek investment for Zimbabwe.

Ministers say the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) is using sharp fuel price increases as a pretext for violence.

But the MDC accuses the authorities of a brutal crackdown.

Read: Zimbabwe protests: Crackdown is just a ‘taste of things to come’

Mr Mnangagwa’s announcement of a steep increase in the fuel price over a week ago led to angry protests in the capital, Harare, and the south-western city of Bulawayo.

Rights groups say at least 12 people have been killed but this has not been officially confirmed.

Mr Mnangagwa arrived back in Harare late on Monday night.

Earlier, MDC leader Nelson Chamisa said many of the party’s members had been detained including four MPs.

He accused security forces of attacking families in their homes.

Read: South Africa rejected Zimbabwe loan request

The Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions, the umbrella group that called the protests, says its leader Japhet Moyo has also been arrested.

As tensions rose, the government said on Sunday that the security forces’ actions were just “a foretaste of things to come”.

“The MDC leadership has been consistently pushing out the message that they will use violent street action to overturn the results of [last year’s] ballot,” presidential spokesman George Charamba said.

The opposition rejected a court ruling in August 2018 that confirmed that President Mnangagwa had defeated Mr Chamisa.

    What has the opposition said?

Mr Chamisa told the BBC that there was “no justification whatsoever of having soldiers with live ammunition, with guns, machine guns, AK47 on the streets, beating up citizens”.

“People are being approached in their homes, they are being taken out of their homes with their families even if they are sleeping… a lot of people have been arrested for no apparent reason,” he said.

MDC national chairperson Thabitha Khumalo said that she had gone into hiding after the police and military turned up at her home at night.

    Why have fuel prices increased?

The price rise was aimed at tackling shortages caused by an increase in fuel use and “rampant” illegal trading, President Mnangagwa said.

But many Zimbabweans, worn down by years of economic hardship, suddenly found they could not even afford the bus fare to work.

The new prices mean Zimbabwe now has the most expensive fuel in the world, according to GlobalPetrolPrices.com

Mr Mnangagwa has been struggling to revive the economy, which is experiencing high inflation while wages have stagnated.

It emerged on Monday that South Africa had rejected a request from Zimbabwe for an emergency loan of $1.2bn (£932m) in December.

The government had hoped the cash would help stabilise the economy and resolve fuel shortages in the country.

  • Illegal courier service operators to face prosecution

The Postal and Courier Services Regulatory Commission has disclosed that it will start prosecuting all illegal operators in the coming months to rid the system of non-compliant businesses.

The move follows what has been described as the rise in fake courier services.

The latest caution by the Postal Courier Services Regulatory Commission comes after an initial exercise to register and license qualified operators.

Of the one hundred and thirty licensed operators, ninety-six (96) of them renewed their licenses leaving them in good standing.

But the conviction that there are illegal operators who are evading taxes and defrauding people to some extent, gives the regulator no option than to crack the whip.

Public Affairs Manager at the Postal Courier Services Regulatory Commission Nii Yeboah Edwin Burgesson disclosed that the commission is collaborating with the police to stop unlicensed operators.

“We are going to have a joint operation with the Ghana Police Service where for three days running we are going to clamp down on the services of illegal operators and these illegal operators include one-man operators who have motorbikes but have not come to the commission to have their operations regularized,” he told Citi Business News.

Defaulters are subject to as much as 500 penalty units and in some cases prosecutions not less than six months.

Meanwhile the GRA has sanctioned the Commission to clamp down on courier services who fail to comply with regulations at the various points of entry.

“The GRA has given us the opportunity to furnish them the list of operators in good standing especially those who operate at the ports. So all those who are not licensed are not allowed to clear their goods and we are going to carry on with those as well,” he concluded.

  • Government allocates 800 million cedis extra to support Police Service

Mr Ambrose Dery, the Minister for the Interior, has said government provided GH¢800 million extra last year to the Ghana Police Service for the execution of its duties.

He said 160 weapons were also given to the Service at the end of 2017 and 200 cars at the end of 2018, and assured the Police of more support in the years ahead.

The Minister made this known during a visit to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters of the Ghana Police Service in Accra on Friday.

Mr Dery said the President, Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo Addo has observed the effective work of the Service and is prepared to empower them and provide them with the requisite logistics.

“We know you are working but we need you to do it professionally, diligently, and expeditiously,” he said.

He urged the public to give out information pertaining to crimes to the Police first and not the media saying, “Sometimes, when the information is given to the media first, it is distorted and by the time it gets to the police, the worse could have happened already”.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Maame Yaa Tiwaa Addo-Danquah, the Director General of the CID, said the Department has 32 units at the headquarters out of which 14 play various roles with regards to investigations.

In order to improve the services rendered to the citizenry, DCOP Addo-Danquah said the CID organised a rigorous detective investigative training for 1,390 officers in 2018 within a period of six to seven weeks.

Additionally, 192 DOVVSU officers were trained as well as 151 fire arms officers.

She said the Service has been able to develop a central database where cases being handled by investigators could be monitored and tracked.

In terms of the case tracking management system, the Service has covered Accra, Tema and Volta regions onto the database and were preparing to cover the Ashanti and Central regions until the whole country have been covered, she said.

“The idea of the case tracking management system is to improve supervision where crime officers throughout the country would go to the database and save instructions for us at the headquarters to monitor how they are managing cases,” she said.

DCOP Addo-Danquah said this is because many cases have been left under investigation and not brought to a closure, therefore, the case tracking management system would ensure that cases under investigation are reduced to the barest minimum and brought to a closure.

The Director General appealed to the Government to get the Service digital investigative tools, as they could not continue to use the manual way of investigating cases, which is not effective.

She called on Government to construct an operational Digital Forensic Lab stocked with tools for the Service, because it hires private forensic labs for most of its investigations.

DCOP Addo-Danquah said the Service has a Resource Centre currently under construction at the Detective Training School and it would be used for deliberations and assessments on how successful or wrong an investigation was conducted.

She said the Centre after construction, would also give the investigators an opportunity to observe and learn from the operations of other Police Service globally, using the online connectivity.

  • Ive not kept your bulbs – Sekyere Afram Plains MP to residents

A communications team member of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Sekyere Afram Plains constituency of Ashanti region, Daniel Akurugu, has reacted to the “false” claims by residents in the constituency that, the MP for the area, Mr Adomako Mensah, has refused to hand over to them some bulbs handed over to him by the Energy Ministry.

He described the claims as unfortunate and one orchestrated by the New Patriotic Party (NPP), to tarnish the image of the MP.

The residents led by Mr Amoh Justice who double as constituency secretary of NPP said that, all efforts to get clarification from their MP over the matter failed because he did not answer their calls.

According to him, residents had received an information that, the ministry of energy distributed 40 led bulbs to all 275 members of parliament for them to distribute to their various constituencies to help enhance electrification system in the country but ever since the distribution was made, by the ministry, the MP has failed to submit it to the district assembly.

But the NDC officer denied the claims and clarified that although the bulbs were distributed to the MPs, the MP for the constituency had not gone for his because he was out of the country and was on an official parliamentary assignment.

He said, the MP who is a member on the Finance Committee of Parliament was delegated to represent the house together some four other MPs on an assignment outside the country.

He said he has personally spoken with the MP and he has promised to go for the bulbs and distribute them.

He expressed the disappointment of the NPP and asked the public to disregard the allegation.

  • Ahmed’s Murder: NPP, NDC’s blame game is ‘nauseating and annoying’ – Kabila

A member of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), James Kwabena Bomfeh, has blamed both the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and its rival the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for compromising investigations into the murder of the investigative journalist, Ahmed Hussein-Suale.

Ahmed Hussein-Suale was a key member of ace undercover journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas’ Tiger Eye PI team.

He played an integral role in the undercover investigations into the bribery and corruption practices in Ghana Football resulting in the dissolution of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the resignation of then President Kwesi Nyantakyi.

Ahmed was on Wednesday, January 16, 2019 shot dead by some unknown gunmen at Madina on his way home and after the demise of the journalist; Anas Aremeyaw Anas posted a video of the Assin Central Member of Parliament (MP), Kennedy Agyapong inciting people to beat up the deceased.

The MP is also suspecting Anas of masterminding the murder of the journalist, claiming the deceased has fallen out with Anas.

The NPP and NDC have also waded into the discussions, with the Minority in Parliament calling on the Police to grab the Assin Central MP who is also a staunch member of the ruling party for interrogation.

Speaking to sit-in host Nana Yaw Kesseh on Peace FM’s ‘kokrokoo’ programme, James Kwabena Bomfeh popularly called Kabila noted that the two parties are only worsening the situation by pointing fingers at certain people saying “the real culprits might be out there laughing”.

According to him, the parties should leave the Police to do their work and not interfere with their investigations.

He believed the Police are capable of hunting for the culprits and do not need the NPP and NDC or any individual to be making wild accusations at others since it can potentially disrupt investigations.

“What the NDC and the NPP, you do to us the citizens who are not part of you; is that you make us look stupid anytime they vote for you. Because you turn around and blame each other for the failures that the two of you have presided over . . . The blame game in that thing is nauseating and annoying,” he said.

  • Theresa May looks for way to break deadlock after Brexit deal

UK Prime Minister Theresa May is making a statement to MPs on the way forward on Brexit after her planned deal was rejected by MPs last week.

She hopes to win over Tory Brexiteer MPs and Northern Ireland’s DUP, by resolving their concerns over the “backstop” plan for the Irish border.

Last week, Mrs May said she would focus on cross-party talks to get a Brexit deal accepted by Parliament.

Downing Street insisted that cross-party talks were continuing.

Read: Brexit: Theresa May pushes for cross-party consensus

The backstop is the “insurance policy” in the withdrawal deal, intended to ensure that whatever else happens, there will be no return to a visible border between Northern Ireland and the Irish Republic after the UK leaves the EU.

Both the UK and the EU believe that bringing back border checks could put the peace process at risk. But a way of avoiding those checks has yet to win over MPs.

The DUP, which keeps Mrs May’s minority government in power through a deal to support it in key votes, rejected her Brexit deal last Tuesday, but 24 hours later helped her see off a bid to oust her in a no confidence motion, saying it didn’t want a change of government, just a change of policy.

Mrs May held a conference call with her cabinet on Sunday. It is understood she wants to show the EU that MPs could back a deal without a backstop, in the hope of encouraging Brussels to soften its position.

Read: UK readies for historic Brexit deal vote

Meanwhile BBC political editor Laura Kuenssberg has suggested Mrs May may announce that fees will be waived for EU nationals who want to live in the UK after Brexit:

Norman Smith, BBC assistant political editor, said anyone waiting for a Plan B would be “stuck at the bus stop for an awfully long time”.

He said that reports over the weekend of the possibility of a bi-lateral agreement with the Irish Republic or a rewriting of the Good Friday Agreement had been “kiboshed” by both governments.

“It is back to the backstop and trying to find some sort of breakthrough,” he added.

Mrs May’s government agreed a withdrawal deal with the EU in November – covering topics such as the “divorce bill” and the Irish border – but it was rejected by MPs by a majority of 230 votes.

If Parliament doesn’t approve a withdrawal agreement, the UK is due to leave the EU on 29 March without a deal or transition period.

  • Support Center for Menzgold victims begin operations

A support program for Menzgod victims has begun in earnest. As an initiative under Irbarb Security Consult, the program seeks to psychologicaly support aggrieved customers of now defunct gold trading industry, Menzgold Ghana Limited.

Speaking at a press conference on Monday, CEO of Irbarb Security Consult, Irbard Ibrahim, emphasized the need to provide support to clients of Menzgold who may currently be suffering psychologically from the losses incurred on their huge investments.

He expressed worry over the rise of mockery and blame game among politicians and Ghanaians in general. According to him, such posture does little to console the customers who, over the past few weeks have staged a number of demonstrations.

“Making mockery of them or blaming politicians will do very little to mitigate their pain. A kind word of sympathy from us to each person who has suffered loss would go a long way to put their heart at rest even if their monies are not retrieved eventually.”

Addressing the need to attend to the psychological needs of Menzgolders, Mr. Irbard called on the state to take steps to ensure that a goodwill committee consisting of psychologists, the National Peace Council, as well as other faith-based and civil society groups, is formed to assist the clients in recovering from their loss.

“As state security and regulatory institutions continue investigations into this matter, the least we can do for Menzgold victims is to provide them emotional and psychological support in this time of distress rather than stigmatize them.”

    Support Center for Menzgold Customers

The center will provide free services to Menzgold victims on three levels:

    1. A first appointment for an introductory briefing session
    2. An appointment with a clinical psychologist to help victims overcome traumas and early signs of depression
    3. An appointment with a financial analyst to help victims return to financial normalcy

  • Democrat Kamala Harris announces presidential run

Democratic senator Kamala Harris, who represents California, says she will run for president in the 2020 election.

Senator Harris, who was elected in 2016, previously served as the state’s attorney general.

“I love my country,” she told ABC’s Good Morning America, adding she would “fight for the best of who we are”.

A vocal critic of President Donald Trump, she is the fifth Democrat to join the battle for the party’s nomination in the 2020 election.

Elizabeth Warren, Kirsten Gillibrand, Tulsi Gabbard and John Delaney have also announced they are intending to run.

Read: Algeria to hold presidential election on April 18

“The future of our country depends on you and millions of others lifting our voices to fight for our American values. That’s why I’m running for president of the United States,” the 54-year-old senator said in a video posted on Twitter.

The 2020 Democratic presidential primary will be the first time more than one woman competes for the party’s nomination.

Near the head of the pack

Analysis by Anthony Zurcher, BBC News, Washington

Kamala Harris is the kind of Democrat who could stick around and prevail in what is sure to be a gruelling nomination battle. She is from California, which is rich in both primary delegates and fundraising dollars. As a woman, and from an ethnic minority, she is well positioned to capitalise on her party’s growing diversity.

She has one of the most liberal voting records in the US Senate at a time when Democrats are leaning to the left, but she also has a background as a hard-nosed prosecutor.

That background may end up a vulnerability as well, given that some progressives are already criticising her prosecutorial record. She will have to walk a fine line to tout her accomplishments while justifying her decisions.

Sen Harris has only been on the national stage two years, and not every political neophyte can hold up under fire the way Mr Obama did in 2008. Sen Harris will be tested in the coming months, but she starts the contest near the head of the pack.

    Presentational grey line

Securing the nomination would make Sen Harris the first African American to be a major party nominee for the presidency.

“I have the unique experience of having been a leader in local government, state government and federal government,” she said. “The American public wants a fighter… and I’m prepared to do that.”

    Who is Kamala Harris?

She served two terms as district attorney of San Francisco (2004-2011), before being elected as attorney general of California (2011-2017), the first woman of colour to do so.

In 2017, the former prosecutor was sworn in as California’s junior US senator.

She is the daughter of immigrants from Jamaica and India and has pushed back against critics of “identity politics”.

“It is used to try and shut us up,” Sen Harris told a conference last summer.

Her tough questioning of Justice Brett Kavanaugh about his views on abortion and the ongoing investigation into alleged Russian interference in the 2016 election attracted attention from Democrats.

But she has also faced criticism for saying she was not aware of allegations of sexual harassment against one of her aides, who resigned in 2016.

Sen Harris plans to launch her campaign during a rally in Oakland, California, on Sunday.

  • NPP dwarfs NDC in Ayawaso West Wuogon

The main two political parties, New Partriotic Party (NPP) and National Democratic Congress (NDC) clashed over the weekend for Health Walks ahead of the January 31st by-election in the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency.

The Health Walks were organized as part of their measures to test and energize their support base in the Constituency.

But while the NPP’s Agyarko Memorial Health Walk in the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency saw a massive turn-out in attendance by the Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia , the National Organizer of the ruling NPP, Sammy Awuku and the National Youth Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye led the walk across the constituency, it is reported that of the NDC was marked with poor organization and attendance.

Through observations of both political parties in terms of the health walk, the turn-out for the Health Walk however makes it seems the NDC has already thrown in the towel ahead of the January 31st by-election as tongues are already wagging on that; perhaps it is the strategy of the opposition NDC to make it appear so.

The General Secretary, NPA, Edward Ameyibor, applauded SSNIT for the gesture saying, “a donation of such huge amount to our association to support our pensioners medical scheme, is good news.”

He said most pensioners spend a substantial amount of their pensions on good health adding that such presentation will go a long way to prolong the lives of members.

  • Elizabeth Addo scores a beauty in Wanderers’ 4-1 win over Adelaide

Black Queens captain Elizabeth Addo scored a beauty in Western Sydney Wanderers 4-1 win over Adelaide United to secure first win of the season in the Australian Women’s-League.

The skilful attacker was the star of the show and clinched the player of the match accolade with Adelaide’s defense unable to contain the Ghanaian.

Adelaide United needed the three points to work on cementing a maiden finals appearance, whereas Western Sydney were playing for some pride as their hope for finals is well and truly over. It was the underdogs, the Wanderers, who showed a never say die attitude to outclass the Reds on the day.

Read: Aduana Stars part ways with Anokye Badu

Adelaide couldn’t afford to be complacent despite their opponents only having one point. And as unpredictable as the W-League has been this season, Lowe kicked things off by heading in the opener for the Wanderers from a set-piece in just the second minute.

An impressive Elizabeth Addo fired a shot from distance but it was collected by Adelaide custodian Sarah Willacy.

After the break, both sides had their fair share of the ball, but Adelaide defended much better and limited Western Sydney’s chances on goal.

On the hour mark, the Black Queens captain was brought down by Dylan Holmes and Kylie Ledbrook ultimately converted the spot-kick to regain the lead.

Read: I have no plan to rejoin Hearts Kizito

As play went on, Addo was dominant and remained a constant threat to Adelaide, forcing saves out of Willacy, who was also impressive and held her own.

Erica Halloway furthered the lead with a fabulous strike over Willacy to make it 1-3 and Elizabeth Addo wrapped up an admiring performance as she scored the fourth.

Adelaide lacked the firepower but it didn’t help that their forwards were not being fed the ball. Diagonal passes weren’t working as there wasn’t enough build-up play.

  • I have no plan to rejoin Hearts Kizito

Former Accra Hearts of Oak forward, Kwame Kizito, says he has no immediate plans to rejoin the club but is rather eyeing a career in Europe after receiving offers from Sweden.

Kizito, who parted ways with the Phobians in 2007, is currently without a club and is back in Ghana to sort out what he claims are issues with his birth certificate. His presence in town may have raised speculations that he was seeking a return to the Phobians.

However, the 22-year-old forward told the Graphic Sports via telephone last Friday that his comments in the media was misinterpreted as seeking a return to Hearts, insisting he was looking beyond Ghana football.

Read: Kizito doesn’t have a chance at Hearts Of Oak again- Kim Grant

“A reporter asked if I loved the club and I said yes, because Hearts have been my team since I was a small boy. Then he asked again if I would return to the club and I said if they bring an offer and my manager or agent accepts it, I would not have any choice than to go back and join Hearts of Oak,” explained Kizito said.

He added: “The fact that I said I loved Hearts does not mean that I want to return to the club. I already have a contract in Sweden but I have issues with my birth certificate and that is why I am still here. I was supposed to join Thomas Abbey to his new club in Malaysia, but as I said earlier, there are problems with my birth certificate which I am working on.”
Kizito enjoyed a breakthrough career with Hearts during the 2016/17 season, netting 13 goals as the club finished third in the Ghana PremierLeague and reached the FA Cup final for the first time in a decade.

He was also an integral part of the Black Stars B squad that won the WAFU Cup of Nations tournament held in Ghana in 2017.

The forward failed to agree on a new deal with the Phobians after his contract ran out at the end of the 2016/2017 season. He later joined Al Ittihad on a three-year deal but terminated the contract with the Libyan side in October 2018.

Although Hearts made attempts to keep their star man, he rejected their offer and secured floating status from Player Status Committee of the Ghana Football Association, which made him a free agent to sign for any club of his choice.

  • Kennedy Agyapong slams BBC over Ahmed’s murder reportage

Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, has slammed the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) over Ahmed’s murder reportage.

According to the legislator, the BBC has been bias in their reportage of the murdered Tiger Eye PI investigative journalist, Ahmed Hussein-Suale.

In an interview that he granted Kofi TV, the controversial MP expressed his disappointment at the BBC claiming that their reportage on Ahmed’s death implicates him.

Kennedy Agyapong rendering his disappointment said in twi “BBC too they have gone to make a cheap reportage that I called for his (Ahmed’s) head.”

“They (BBC) are foolish. They are cheapening journalism because they are using Anas’ false information”, he slammed.

The MP who is also the Chairman of Kencity Multimedia continued and said “Look at how CNN broadcasts their news and look at how BBC also broadcasts theirs. As for BBC, they are cheapening themselves”.

“Anas could not have used CNN like the way he used BBC. He is cheapening their reportage because they don’t crosscheck their information before reporting in line with the video Anas released”, he added.

Kennedy Agyapong has been furious since Anas posted a video of him calling for violent attacks on Ahmed somewhere in June 2018.

He claimed such a move by Anas is making people suspect and accuse him of masterminding Ahmed’s murder which in actual fact he did not do.

The ‘tough-talking’ MP was hitting at the BBC since the BBC in their reportage, mentioned the video involving Kennedy Agyapong calling for violent attacks on Ahmed.

The MP in his slam at BBC also said ‘If they are in Britain, does not mean they are better than me here in Ghana. Nonsense!”

On Thursday, January 17, 2019, YEN.com.gh published that Ahmed Hussein-Suale, a key partner to investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas has been shot and killed in Madina, Accra on Wednesday, January 16, 2019 around 9pm.

Few hours after the incident, Anas Aremeyaw Anas posted a video on his Facebook wall involving Kennedy Agyapong revealing the identity of Ahmed on his TV station, NET 2 TV.

Many people, on seeing the video began to slam Kennedy Agyapong with some sections accusing him of allegedly masterminding the young journalist’s murder.

Read: Ahmed never received death threats until his photos were shown on TV Family

But Kennedy Agyapong on the other hand has denied any wrongdoing and said he did not murder Ahmed even though he called out for violent attacks on him.

Somewhere in June 2018, Anas Aremeyaw Anas, together with his Tiger Eye PI team, released a documentary titled ‘Number 12’ which revealed rots in Ghanaian football.

The documentary led to the sack of former Ghana Football Association boss, Kwesi Nyantakyi as well as a ban placed on some referees who appeared to have meddled in corruption as shown in the documentary.

In the wake of the documentary release in June, Kennedy Agyapong was one person who publicly opposed the documentary and lambasted the Tiger Eye PI team for such a documentary.

In his rant against the Tiger Eye PI team at the time, Kennedy Agyapong released pictures purported to be some members of the highly investigative journalistic team.

Among the photos he released was Ahmed Hussein-Suale who Kennedy Agyapong described as a very bad boy, thus must be beaten if he comes close to his premises.

  • South Africa rejected Zimbabwe loan request

South Africa has disclosed that it turned down a request from Zimbabwe for an emergency loan of $1.2bn (£932m) in December.

Treasury spokesman Jabulani Sikhakhane said South Africa did not have “that kind of money”.

Zimbabwe’s government had hoped to use the cash injection to stabilize the ailing economy and resolve fuel shortages in the country.

Soon after the request was rejected, Zimbabwe’s President Emmerson Mnangagwa was forced to announce a steep increase in the price of fuel – a move which has caused angry protests.

Police have violently repressed the protests that broke out mainly in the capital, Harare, and the southwestern city of Bulawayo, with some reports that they were conducting door-to-door searches and using of live ammunition.

  • 10 UN peacekeepers killed in attack on Mali’s Aguelhoc camp

At least 10 peacekeepers from Chad have been killed and 25 others wounded in an attack on a United Nations camp in northern Mali, according to the world body.

Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) claimed responsibility for Sunday’s attack, saying it was “in reaction” to the visit to Chad by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, according to the Mauritanian Al-Akhbar news agency, which regularly receives statements from this armed group.

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres condemned what he described as a “complex attack” on the UN camp in Aguelhoc, some 200km north of Mali’s Kidal region towards the border with Algeria, and called for the perpetrators to be brought to justice.

Read: Kenya attack: Nine arrests over bloody DusitD2 hotel siege

According to residents, the attackers came on motorcycles and cars.

“MINUSMA forces responded robustly and a number of assailants were killed,” UN spokesperson Ivan Dujarric said, referring to the UN peacekeeping mission in Mali.

Mahamat Saleh Annadif, the UN envoy for Mali, condemned what he called a “vile and criminal” attack.

“Peacekeepers of the MINUSMA force at Aguelhok fought off a sophisticated attack by assailants who arrived on several armed vehicles,” he said in a statement.

The attack “illustrates the determination of the terrorists to sow chaos”.

He added the attack demanded “a robust, swift and concerted response”.

    Worsening violence

Mali is under threat from a number of armed groups affiliated with and the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS) groups.

The UN has deployed about 12,000 troops and police in its MINUSMA peacekeeping mission in Mali, which ranks as the most dangerous country for the peacekeepers.

Mali, the eighth largest country in Africa and one of the poorest in the world, has been struggling to return to stability after al-Qaeda-linked fighters took control of the northern areas of the country in early 2012, prompting France to intervene militarily.

The fighters were routed in a French-led military operation in 2013, but large stretches of the landlocked Sahel state remain out of government control.

A peace deal between the government and armed groups was signed in 2015, but its implementation has been slow, while attacks continue in central and northern parts of the country.

Earlier this month, both France and the United States criticised the authorities in Mali for their failure to stem the worsening violence.

  • WhatsApp restricts message-sharing to fight fake news

WhatsApp is limiting all its members to forwarding any single message up to five times in an effort to tackle the spread of false information on the platform.

The Facebook-owned business had already introduced the policy in India six months ago.

The move followed a number of mob lynchings that were blamed on fake reports spread via the service.

Until now, users elsewhere could forward messages up to 20 times.

Read: WhatsApp is going to delete all your messages

The update to the app’s rules was announced at an event in Jakarta, Indonesia. The country is holding its general election in April.

Reports in the Indian press state that a company blog – that has not been shared elsewhere yet – said the firm had made its decision after “carefully” evaluating the results of its half-year-long test in the country.

“The forward limit significantly reduced forwarded messages around the world,” it added.

Up to 256 users can be enrolled in a WhatsApp group.

So, theoretically, a single user can now only forward a message up to 1,280 other individuals rather than the 5,120 people figure that had been possible previously.

The restriction comes at a time WhatsApp and Facebook’s other services are under scrutiny for their role in the spread of propaganda and other untruths online.

Read: Zuckerberg sees ‘progress’ for Facebook after tumultuous year

Last week, Facebook announced it had removed 500 pages and accounts allegedly involved in peddling fake news in Central Europe, Ukraine and other Eastern European nations.

It also recently announced that it had employed a UK-fact-checking service to flag content on its main platform.

However, the use of end-to-end encryption by WhatsApp means its messages can only be read by their senders and recipients, limiting the firm’s ability to spot false reports.

But at the end of last year, the Indian press reported that the government was considering a change to the law that would force Facebook to police WhatsApp for “unlawful” content. This would challenge its use of the encryption technology.

But in May 2018, Israel said it had struck almost all of Iran’s military infrastructure there in its such biggest assault since the start of the Syrian civil war in 2011.

  • DR Congo election: African leaders congratulate Tshisekedi

Two African presidents have congratulated Democratic Republic of Congo opposition leader Felix Tshisekedi for winning last month’s presidential poll, despite the African Union saying it had “serious doubts” about the result.

The constitutional court ruled that Mr Tshisekedi had won after rejecting a challenge from rival Martin Fayulu.

He said Mr Tshisekedi made a deal with outgoing President Joseph Kabila.

    Mr Tshisekedi’s team denies this.

Read: DR Congo election: Candidate Martin Fayulu appeals against result

Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta and South Africa President Cyril Ramaphosa both sent their congratulations.

Mr Ramaphosa called on all parties “to respect the decision of the constitutional court and commit to continue with a journey of consolidating peace”.

The southern African regional group, Sadc, has also welcomed Mr Tshisekedi’s victory saying that all Congolese should support the president-elect in his bid to maintain “unity, peace and stability”.

The African Union, which was supposed to send a delegation to the DR Congo on Monday, has now postponed the trip.

On Friday, it had called on the court to refrain from ruling on the result of the vote.

    What does Martin Fayulu say?

Mr Fayulu, who the electoral commission said was the runner-up in the 30 December election, said he was the “legitimate” president.

Accusations of fraud are supported by comments from some election observers including the influential Catholic Church.

Mr Fayulu said his supporters should organise “non-violent protests all over the country to defend its sovereignty”.

Martin Fayulu insists he is the “legitimate president”

How does the constitutional court see it?

The court said Mr Fayulu had failed to prove that the election commission had announced false results.

It went on to declare Felix Tshisekedi “president of the Democratic Republic of Congo by simple majority”.

He is now expected to be sworn in within 10 days.

Violence has always accompanied the change of leadership in the country.

But the row over the the results has dented hopes the election could bring the first orderly transfer of power since DR Congo’s independence from Belgium in 1960.

What about the 30 December poll?

The electoral commission earlier announced that Mr Tshisekedi had received 38.5% of the vote, compared with 34.7% for Mr Fayulu.

Ruling coalition candidate Emmanuel Shadary took 23.8%.

However, Mr Fayulu had argued that Mr Tshisekedi had struck a deal with Mr Kabila, who has been in office for 18 years.

Mr Kabila was constitutionally ineligible to run for a third consecutive term.

The election should have taken place by the end of 2016 but was repeatedly postponed because of logistical problems, officials said.

There were a series of delays on voting day. The failure of new electronic voting machines in some polling stations was one of the challenges.

The run-up to the poll was marred by violence and controversy over the decision to delay voting in some areas for health and security reasons – in effect excluding some 1.26 million out of an electorate of nearly 40 million.

    What did others say?

The official figures have been disputed by the Catholic Church which says it deployed 40,000 election monitors across the country.

International experts based in the US, and the French and German governments, have also raised doubts.

Data that was leaked to journalists from three outlets – including the Financial Times newspaper – working alongside a New York-based think tank, the Congo Research Group (CRG), also indicated that Mr Fayulu had won.

  • Zimbabwe protests: Crackdown is just a ‘taste of things to come’

The Zimbabwean government says the security forces’ response to recent protests in which a number of people have reportedly died is just “a foretaste of things to come”.

News of a violent crackdown has emerged despite the government blocking social media sites.

Local rights groups said at least 12 people had been killed and many more beaten by security forces.

The protests were sparked on Monday by a sharp rise in the price of fuel.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa said on Sunday he was cutting short his current foreign tour to return home “in the light of the economic situation”.

Read: Hundreds detained after Zimbabwe protests

Presidential spokesman George Charamba, speaking to the state-owned Sunday Mail newspaper, blamed the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) for the violence that has accompanied the protests.

“The MDC leadership has been consistently pushing out the message that they will use violent street action to overturn the results of [last year’s] ballot,” he said.

The opposition rejected a court ruling in August that confirmed that President Mnangagwa had beaten MDC candidate Nelson Chamisa.

Over the course of the week riot police have clashed with protesters in the capital, Harare, and the southern city of Bulawayo after they lit fires and blocked roads using rocks.

On Thursday, Mr Chamisa tweeted that his thoughts were “with the victims of violence”.

“Despite the vitriol,” he added, “we maintain a dignified position befitting our role as led by the people.”

The UN has called on the government to halt the “excessive use of force” by security forces, amid reports of door-to-door searches and the use of live ammunition.

Why has the fuel price increased?

A week ago, President Mnangagwa announced that the fuel price would more than double.

The price rise was aimed at tackling shortages caused by an increase in fuel use and “rampant” illegal trading, he said.

But many Zimbabweans, worn down by years of economic hardship, suddenly found they could not even afford the bus fare to work.

The new prices mean Zimbabwe now has the most expensive fuel in the world, according to GlobalPetrolPrices.com

They feel that the president, who has been on a tour of Russia and Asian countries, is failing to live up to his promises following his election last year in disputed polls.

The president announced his decision to return early on Twitter, saying his trip had been “highly productive” but that his “first priority is to get Zimbabwe calm, stable and working again”.

Mr Mnangagwa had been expected to attend the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, this week.

But he has been struggling to revive the economy, which is experiencing high inflation while wages have stagnated.

Access to the internet was intermittent throughout the week, but people found they were unable to use social media and the WhatsApp messaging platform, which has become a common way to share news.

  • Sudan president defiant as deadly protests continue

Security forces have fired tear gas at demonstrators in Sudan, as protests against President Omar al-Bashir enter their second month.

In a speech south of the capital on Sunday, the president blamed “infiltrators” for the killings.

“There are some people among the protesters who are killing the demonstrators,” he reportedly said.

Hundreds of demonstrators tried to march on parliament in capital Khartoum’s twin city Omdurman on Sunday.

They sought to hand in a petition demanding President Bashir step down, and chanted “Freedom, peace and justice” – the movement’s main slogan – and “Overthrow, overthrow” as they marched.

But police fired tear gas to halt their progress and reportedly chased down the protesters.

Reuters news agency says about 30 vehicles carrying security personnel in uniform and plain clothes descended on the area.

There were also protests reported in the Khartoum districts of Burri and Bahari, to the east and north of the capital respectively.

A doctor was killed in clashes in Burri on Friday.

There were reports a child was also killed, but organisers apologised on Sunday for what they called a “false report”.

Activists say government forces have fired live rounds and rounded up suspects.

Sarah Jackson, East Africa deputy director for human rights group Amnesty International, blamed security forces for an “unbridled killing spree” in a press release.
