  • MenzGold saga: We wouldnt have been here if I was not forced to resign – Ex-Deputy Governor of BoG

Former Second Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana, BoG, Dr Johnson Asiama has said the issues regarding embattled MenzGold Company would have not reached its current state if he was not forced out of office.

According to him, plans were in place to structure and make sure activities of MenzGold were duly licensed before he was forced to resign by the NPP administration.

Dr Johnson Asiama in press statement clarifying issues of his alleged involvement in the MenzGold saga forcing him to resign by a Vice Chairman of the NPP, Omarie Wadie said he was rather called and asked to resign from office by the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta.

Still, on the MenzGold saga, the Former Deputy Governor said customers would have not been in this current situation if he was not forced out of office.

“At the end of the meeting, they understood and they appealed to me to help them restructure so that BoG could regulate them. I told them they had to apply for a financial institutions license (in the minimum) before we could engage them. In the meantime, I instructed that they halt the Bullion Banking products and to advertise in the newspapers to that effect, which they subsequently did”.

But unfortunately, “that same week was when I was called by the Minister of Finance and told that the President had decided to replace me with his own person, which I obliged. Certainly, if my efforts had continued even after my exit, we would have succeeded in restructuring MENZGOLD or resolving them entirely before end-2017”.

Defunct MenzGold Company has been faced with a lot of regulations related issues forcing the company, to fold up.

  • We’re not interested in collapsing your businesses – NPA replies GLiPGOA

The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) has rejected claims by members of Ghana LPG Operators Association (GLiPGOA) that the recent closure of Goby Gas Station and T-Tekpor Gas Filling Stations at Afariwa Junction in the Ashaiman Municipality is a deliberate attempt to sabotage and collapse their businesses.

The NPA in December last year ordered management T-Tekpor Gas filling station to shut down the facility following recommendations by a Multi Stakeholder Committee(MSC) which was put together to investigate into a petition against the sitting of the facility by Charles Kissi, Assemblyman of the area.

Read: Halt the reckless victimization of our businesses GLiPGOA tells NPA

The Committee recommended that the NPA closes down the facility because it poses high risk to the two adjoining schools-Tema International School and Ridge School, which has a population of 700 children.

Management of the facility who were not happy about the decision therefore dragged NPA to an Accra High presided over by Justice Ackaah T. Boafo

However, addressing a press conference in Tema on Wednesday, 16 January, 2019, President of Ghana LPG Operators Association (GLiPGOA) Torgbe Adaku V, accused NPA of deliberately collapsing businesses owed by their members to pave way for their cronies to build gas plant under the cylinder recirculation model.

Read: NPA orders T-Tekpor gas station at Afariwa Junction to close down today

“The National Petroleum Authority’s apparent agenda to consciously sabotage and collapse our businesses for the giant multinational companies and themselves and their cronies to set up liquefied petroleum gas bottling plants across the country has been activated in full force.

“We have noted with deep concern what appears to be an emerging pattern of closing down stations on the mere whimsies and caprices of so called ‘petitioners’ whose chief complaint has been that gas stations have been sited close to their facilities whether schools or homes contrary to the grounds on which an applicant may be denied a license under the NPA Act,” Torgbe Adaku V stated.

But responding to the claims by GLiPGOA, the NPA in a statement issued by its Corporate Affairs Department stated that “the NPA wishes to categorically deny the allegations made by Torgbe Adaku V and members of GLiPGOA.”

Read: NPA closes down Trinity Gas

“The allegations are vile, defamatory, threatening and a deliberate attempt to sacrifice public safety for personal financial gains,” the statement added.

According to the NPA, as a regulator it operates within the law and is mandated to ensure that operations in the sector are conducted in a safe and standardized manner, adding that stations in breach of safety standards will be sanctioned after due process to ensure public safety.

The statement said, the NPA is aware of the attempts by GLiPGOA to undermine the entire National LPG Policy, which will not only create additional jobs but increase public safety in the downstream sector.

The authority reiterated its commitment to working with players in the industry to ensure the implementation of the Cylinder Recirculation policy as directed by the Government.

“We shall however not give in to threats from any individual or bodies seeking to undermine our work,” it concluded.

  • Tesla to cut more than 3,000 jobs as cars ‘too expensive’

Electric carmaker Tesla has said it will cut its workforce by 7% after the “most challenging” year in its history.

In an email to employees, shared on the firm’s website, founder Elon Musk said that growth at the firm had been strong.

But he added the firm’s cars were still “too expensive for most people” and the road ahead was “very difficult”.

The firm employs more than 45,000 people currently meaning it will lay off over 3,000.

Read: Nigeria’s ex-vice president Atiku flies to US after 12-year visa ban

Mr Musk said 2018 was Tesla’s “most successful” yet, in which it delivered almost as many cars as it had in all the previous years of its existence combined.

However, while it ramped up production of its mid market Model 3 car, it said its products were too expensive for most people and its profits too low.

“This quarter will hopefully allow us, with great difficulty, effort and some luck, to target a tiny profit,” he wrote.

“However, starting around May, we will need to deliver at least the mid-range Model 3 variant in all markets, as we need to reach more customers who can afford our vehicles.

“Moreover, we need to continue making progress towards lower priced variants of Model 3.”

He said as a result of the firm’s challenges, Tesla had “no choice” but to reduce full-time employee headcount and retain “only the most critical temps and contractors”.

He added the firm would need to make these cuts while “increasing the Model 3 production rate” and making many “manufacturing engineering improvements in the coming months”.

  • I pick my team based on penis size – German coach’s response to journalist

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is known for his brilliant responses to questions, whether they are measured, witty or plain daft.

But he’s never had to deal with the type of question aimed at fellow German Imke Wubbenhorst, who made history in December by becoming the first woman to manage in Germany’s fifth tier when she took over at BV Cloppenburg.

She told Welt how one journalist had asked her whether she warned players to put their pants on when she entered the dressing room.

Read: Bayern Munich remain interested in Ghana’s Hudson-Odoi – Sporting Director

“Of course not, I’m a professional,” she responded, sarcastically. “I pick my players based on their penis size.”

Wubbenhorst, who is former German youth international, is not the first female coach to face condescending or sexist questions.

When former Sweden women’s team manager Pia Sundhage was asked in 2014 whether a woman was able to coach a men’s team, she replied: “Well [German chancellor] Angela Merkel runs a whole country.”

Sundhage had already won two Olympic golds as manager of the United States.

Fortunately, Cloppenburg’s owners are more forward thinking.

“It was an easy decision to let go of gender in the evaluation process,” said board member Herbert Schroder. “We only looked at quality.”

Wubbenhorst, 30, had been in charge of Cloppenburg’s women’s team but the club decided she would be better placed helping the relegation-threatened men’s side.

The team are still bottom of the league, but hopefully questions will be posed about players rather than their pants as she tries to drag her team up the table.

  • Trump cancels Nancy Pelosi foreign trip citing shutdown

US President Donald Trump has postponed House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s upcoming trip to Brussels and Afghanistan, asking her to stay to negotiate an end to the partial US government shutdown.

The president was able to halt the trip by denying the use of military aircraft to Mrs Pelosi and a delegation.

On Wednesday Mrs Pelosi had urged Mr Trump to postpone his State of the Union address, amid political deadlock.

Mr Trump’s move came on the 27th day of the US’s longest-ever federal shutdown.

Read: Nancy Pelosi asks President Trump to reschedule state of the union address as shutdown grinds on

The Republican president wants $5.7bn (£4.4bn) of congressional funding to build a wall on the US-Mexico border, but Democrats have refused.

Mr Trump’s cancellation of the trip emerged less than an hour before the Democratic speaker of the House of Representatives was scheduled to leave on Thursday afternoon, US media say.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders shared the president’s letter in a tweet.

“I also feel that, during this period, it would be better if you were in Washington negotiating with me and joining the Strong Border Security movement to end the Shutdown,” Mr Trump wrote.

The president added that Mrs Pelosi could proceed with the trip – which he described as a “public relations event” – using a commercial airline.

Drew Hammill, Mrs Pelosi’s deputy chief of staff, said her travel to Afghanistan had required a stop in Brussels to allow pilots to rest, as well as to meet top Nato commanders “to affirm the United States’ ironclad commitment” to the alliance.

Mr Hammill said the plans did not include a visit to Egypt, and noted that Mr Trump and Republicans have travelled during a shutdown.

Mrs Pelosi’s travel had not been announced before Mr Trump’s letter.

Some commentators expressed dismay that the president would reveal plans about a trip to a war zone by a congresswoman who is third in line to the presidency.

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer told reporters Mr Trump’s action “demeans the presidency” while Republican Senator Lindsey Graham called Mrs Pelosi’s threat to cancel the state of the union address “irresponsible” and Mr Trump’s response “also inappropriate”.

A White House aide told US media that the trip “would have guaranteed” that federal workers would miss their second paycheque “because [Mrs Pelosi] would not have been here to negotiate any kind of deal”.

Read: Zimbabwe in ‘total internet shutdown’ amid violent crackdown

However, Mr Trump has not banned Mrs Pelosi from going – just from using military aircraft.

Fox News also reports that members of Congress who were due to join the trip have been left sitting on a US Air Force bus at Capitol Hill as staff at the Capitol, State, Pentagon and White House scramble to handle the situation.

In her own letter to Mr Trump on Wednesday, Mrs Pelosi called on him to reschedule his annual address to Congress since “the extraordinary demands presented” by the event could not be met during the shutdown.

Mr Trump has not yet directly responded to the request to move his speech, but in an email to campaign supporters, he said he was “disinvited” from his address to the American people.

Earlier on Thursday, Ms Pelosi told reporters that the Democrats did not want security officers working unpaid.

“Maybe he thinks it’s okay not to pay people who work,” Ms Pelosi said. “I don’t.”

Democrats in the House passed another bill to re-open parts of the government, but like past attempts, it is expected to fail in the Republican-led Senate.

The new stopgap bill proposes to re-open the government through 28 February.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has refused to take up any legislation that does not have the president’s approval and has accused Democrats of wasting time.

  • Prince Philip unhurt in crash while driving

The Duke of Edinburgh has been involved in a car crash while driving near the Queen’s Sandringham estate, Buckingham Palace has said.

Prince Philip, 97, was not injured in the accident, which happened as he drove a Land Rover out of a driveway onto the A149 shortly before 15:00 GMT.

The other car involved was a Kia. Two women in it needed hospital treatment – they have since been discharged.

Eyewitnesses said the duke’s Land Rover overturned during the collision.

Read: Harvey Weinstein and his defense lawyer part ways

They said they helped the duke out of the vehicle. He was conscious but very, very shocked and shaken, they added.

Norfolk police said it was force policy to breath test drivers involved in collisions and both had provided negative readings.

The duke is back at Sandringham and has seen a doctor as a precaution.

A woman who drove past the crash scene – near Babingley, a small village north of Kings Lynn in Norfolk – at around 15:40 said she saw an ambulance and “a heavy police presence”.

“I was just going down the A149 … and saw a lot of blue flashing lights ahead,” she said. “I saw a black, 4×4 type car on its side and me and my son were like ‘oh my word, that doesn’t look good’.

“Luckily it was just sort of on the side of the road, the road wasn’t closed in any way.

“Obviously it looked quite smashed in. I’m quite amazed he [the duke] is okay actually.”
Norfolk police confirmed officers were called to the scene shortly before 3pm after a Land Rover and a Kia were involved in a collision.

It had previously been reported the duke had been driving a Range Rover.

The driver of the Kia suffered cuts, while the passenger sustained an arm injury, police said. Both were treated at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in King’s Lynn.

A statement said the road remained open and both vehicles were recovered a short time later.

Nick Cobb, a long-time Babingley resident, was driving past with his 16-year-old daughter Emily at about 15:10 GMT when they spotted an overturned car about 100 yards from their house.

“The [Land Rover] was on its side on a private road.

“The other car was well into the hedge on the opposite side of the road.

“There was lots of debris in the road, lots of glass and lots of other cars, some police cars, some from the Sandringham Estate and about six ordinary looking cars that looked as though they had stopped to help.

Read: Nigeria’s 2019 presidential polls: 72 aspirants on ballot – Official

“We only found out that it was the duke’s car when we saw it on the news. The road was not blocked by the crash and was open when we came past.”

The BBC’s Nic Rigby, at the scene, says all that’s left are pieces of broken glass and the remnants of a wing mirror.

It has been a chilly day, he adds, and there were small flurries of snow in parts of Norfolk, but nothing that troubled the county’s roads.

The Queen and Prince Philip have been staying at the estate in Norfolk since Christmas.

The Archbishop of York, John Sentamu, tweeted a prayer in support to the duke, and later another one for the two other people involved in the accident.

Royal biographer Hugo Vickers told BBC News: “Any kind of car accident at the age of 97 is likely to produce shock.

“Some years ago he gave up flying planes long before he needed to because he was scared that if something happened there would be a lot of criticism.

“You know, why was he, at the age of 55, still flying a plane when he should have retired at 48 or something like that.

“So he does listen to these things – he’s very, very sensible.

“If anyone’s involved in a car accident, it’s quite a frightening thing. If he thought that he’d lost concentration or something or he hadn’t seen somebody he would realise he’s not up to it anymore.”

But he added: “If driving restrictions based on age and safety were introduced we would be more likely to restrict young drivers rather than older drivers.

“Young, predominantly male, drivers are much more likely to crash within six months of passing their test than older drivers within six months of hanging up their keys.

“Older drivers often self restrict their driving by not driving at night and only driving on familiar roads.”

The duke famously drove the Obamas when the then-US president and first lady visited Windsor in 2016.

A discussion on whether to put average speed cameras on the stretch of the A149 where the duke’s crash happened had already been planned by Norfolk County Council on Friday – prior to the crash.

Prince Philip retired from public life in August 2017 having spent decades supporting the Queen and attending events for his own charities and organisations.

Buckingham Palace calculated he had completed 22,219 solo engagements since 1952.

Since retiring from official solo duties, he has appeared in public alongside the Queen and other members of the royal family at events and church services.

He did not attend the Royal Family’s Christmas Day service at Sandringham last month.

  • Harvey Weinstein and his defense lawyer part ways

Prominent New York defense lawyer Benjamin Brafman will no longer represent Harvey Weinstein in his criminal sexual assault case, the two said in a joint statement Thursday.

The men agreed to “part ways amicably,” the statement said. Brafman notified Judge James Burke of his withdrawal in a letter Thursday.

Brafman has agreed to cooperate with Weinstein’s new lawyer to ensure “an orderly transition.”

Read: Ashley Judd’s sexual harassment claim against Harvey Weinstein dismissed

Weinstein plans to announce his new legal team by early next week, the statement continued.

“Mr. Weinstein praised Mr. Brafman for his legal work to date and Mr. Brafman reiterated his belief that Mr. Weinstein would be exonerated of the charges that have been filed against him,” according to the statement.

“Brafman personally wished Mr. Weinstein the best of luck as he defends the case and the accusations that Mr. Weinstein has vehemently denied.”

The news comes one day after a source familiar with the situation told CNN that Brafman planned to withdraw from representing the former producer.

Weinstein is accused of raping a woman in a New York hotel room in 2013 and forcibly performing oral sex on another woman at his Manhattan apartment in 2006.

He faces five felony charges: two counts of predatory sexual assault, one count of criminal sexual act in the first degree and one count each of first-degree rape and third-degree rape. Weinstein has pleaded not guilty.

The case hasn’t been completely smooth for either side.
In October, one of Weinstein’s six felony charges was dismissed after an NYPD officer was found to have mishandled evidence. Weinstein’s petition to dismiss the remaining charges was declined in December.

Brafman’s past clients include Martin Shkreli, Plaxico Burress, Sean Combs and Dominique Strauss-Kahn.

In a series of interviews for a profile by Esquire, published Monday, Brafman spoke about representing Weinstein.

Read: Jailed Palestinian who sold land to Israelis set to be freed

“I’ve spent 40 years trying to get to the top of my profession, and this is the most high-profile case in the United States,” Brafman said. “It’s flattering to be picked by someone like him.”

Brafman also addressed how the #MeToo movement has impacted Weinstein’s high-profile case and others.

“One day it’s Charlie Rose. Then it’s Kevin Spacey. Matt Lauer. Les Moonves. Suddenly they have something about Judge Kavanaugh from when he was in high school? Give me a break,” Brafman told the magazine. “I have a daughter; I have granddaughters. I’d like them to not have to deal with harassment, discrimination, and an unequal pay scale. But a movement becomes dangerous when it generates the kind of hatred that keeps a person from getting a fair trial.”

When speaking to CNN in August, Brafman said it would be “difficult but not impossible” to seat an impartial jury in Weinstein’s trial.

  • Jailed Palestinian who sold land to Israelis set to be freed

A Palestinian man who received a life sentence for selling property in occupied territory to Israelis is set to be released to the United States, Israeli media reported.

Isaam Akel, who also holds dual US citizenship, is expected to leave the occupied West Bank to be transported to the US in the upcoming days, according to Haaretz.

The Palestinian Authority (PA) was under tremendous Israeli and US pressure to release the 55-year-old, with Israel conducting several retaliatory operations following the sentencing.

Read: Nigeria’s 2019 presidential polls: 72 aspirants on ballot – Official

No official statement has been made by the PA, Israel or the US after the reports of Akel’s imminent release.

In December, a Ramallah court sentenced Akel to life in prison with hard labour after he was found guilty of selling land in the Old City of annexed East Jerusalem to Israeli Jews.

According to the Palestinian news agency Wafa, the Ramallah High Court found him guilty of violating a penal code from 1960 that bans the sale of land to a foreign country.

He was accused of being a middleman between a Palestinian home owner and Ateret Cohanim, a Jewish organisation that is working to establish a Jewish majority in the Old City.

Read: Zimbabwe in ‘total internet shutdown’ amid violent crackdown

The offence can result in capital punishment under Palestinian law, but President Mahmoud Abbas has never ratified a death sentence.

Israel captured the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem from Jordan in the 1967 Arab-Israeli war, and claims Jerusalem as its “undivided capital,” while the PA sees East Jerusalem as the capital of its future state.

Following Akel’s detention, Israeli police twice arrested the Palestinian governor of Jerusalem, Adnan Gheith, in connection with their investigation into the matter and raided his office.

In November, US ambassador to Israel David Friedman on Twitter called Akel’s continuing detention “antithetical to the values of the US & to all who advocate the cause of peaceful coexistence”.

“We demand his immediate release,” he said.

  • Controversial Indian spiritual guru sentenced to life in prison for murder

A controversial Indian spiritual guru has been sentenced to life in prison for the 2002 murder of a journalist who helped expose the sexual abuse of women within his sect.

Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, head of the spiritual organization Dera Sacha Sauda, received the sentence on Thursday through a video link in prison, where he is serving 20 years for the rape of two female followers.

Self-styled “godman” Singh, along with aides Kuldeep Singh, Nirmal Singh and Krishan Lal, was convicted on murder charges and criminal conspiracy by a court in Panchkula in northern Haryana state on Friday last week.

Read: First women to enter India temple in centuries now in hiding as protests rage

Despite his earlier conviction, Singh remains an influential figure in India where he commands a loyal and devoted following. Known as the “guru of bling” on account of his previously flamboyant lifestyle, Singh starred in five films and numerous popular music videos, including the “Messenger of God,” in which he acts as the hero who saves the nation.

His Dera Sacha Sauda, the website of which still features Singh prominently, describes itself as a “selfless socio-spiritual organization” and has ashrams across 10 states and union territories in India and claims to have millions of followers worldwide.

In 2002, Ram Chander Chhatrapati, the editor of Hindi-language daily “Poora Sacch” (The Whole Truth) was shot dead following the publication of an anonymous letter by one of Singh’s followers.

The letter, which eventually led to the 2017 sentencing of Singh, described incidents of sexual abuse at the Dera Sacha Sauda compound in the state of Haryana.

Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, center, greets followers as he arrives for a press conference in New Delhi, India, in October 2016.

Speaking at a press conference after Singh’s 2017 sentencing, Chhatrapati’s son Anshul said that his father’s death had been a direct result of his decision to publish the anonymous letter.

“The next day onwards, there were threats and he understood that he was likely to be killed. Still, he decided to soldier on,” said Anshul. “My faith in law has been reaffirmed. The sacrifice of my father was to uphold the journalistic principles of complete truth,” he added.

Police in northern India have been placed on standby following Thursday’s sentencing. Singh’s conviction in 2017 sparked deadly protests, as supporters went on a rampage in towns across the northern Indian states of Punjab and Haryana. At least 31 people were killed in the clashes and hundreds injured.

  • Zimbabwe in ‘total internet shutdown’ amid violent crackdown

Zimbabwe on Friday faced a “total internet shutdown,” a media group said, after a days-long violent crackdown on people protesting a dramatic fuel price increase. Badly injured people streamed into a hospital in the capital after alleged assaults by security forces.

“Our country is going through one of the most trying periods in its history,” the Zimbabwe Catholic Bishops’ Conference said in a sweeping statement lamenting the government’s “intolerant handling of dissent” and its failure to halt economic collapse.

Media group MISA-Zimbabwe shared a text message from the country’s largest telecom company, Econet, calling the government’s internet order “beyond our reasonable control.” The High Court will hear a challenge to the shutdown on Monday, the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights said.

A prominent pastor and activist who faces a possible 20 years in prison on a subversion charge arrived at court, one of more than 600 people arrested this week. Evan Mawarire has called it “heartbreaking” to see the new government of President Emmerson Mnangagwa acting like that of former leader Robert Mugabe.

Mawarire is accused of inciting civil disobedience online. “It’s a shame what’s happening,” the pastor said.

International calls for restraint by Zimbabwe’s security forces are growing, while Mnangagwa prepares to plead for more investment at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. He announced the fuel price increase on the eve of his overseas trip, leaving hardline former military commander and Vice President Constantino Chiwenga as acting president.

Gasoline in the economically shattered country is now the world’s most expensive. Zimbabweans heeded a nationwide stay-at-home call earlier this week in protest. Rights groups and others have accused security forces of targeting activists and labor leaders in response, with the United States expressing alarm.

The U.N. human rights office on Friday urged Zimbabwe to stop the crackdown, noting reports of intimidating door-to-door searches by security forces.

The Zimbabwe Association of Doctors for Human Rights has said it had treated 68 cases of gunshot wounds and 100-plus other cases of “assaults with sharp objects, booted feet, baton sticks” and more. Hungry residents of the capital, Harare, who ventured out seeking food reported being tear-gassed by police.

Soldiers were still controlling long fuel lines in Harare on Friday, and many wary residents stayed at home. Some said they can no longer afford fares for public transport.

Injured people streamed into a private hospital in the capital. Some had broken legs. A nurse attended to a man with a broken spine.

Albert Taurai told The Associated Press he had ventured out to look for bread when plainclothes officers wearing masks beat him up, accusing him of barricading roads.

Keith Frymore, a 21-year-old security guard, had a torn lip. He told the AP a group of uniformed soldiers attacked him at work.

“I need $70 to get help here. I don’t have that kind of money,” he said.

Death tolls this week have varied. Eight people were killed when police and military fired on crowds, Amnesty International said. Zimbabwe’s government said three people were killed, including a policeman stoned to death by an angry crowd.

The demonstrations amount to “terrorism,” Information Minister Monica Mutsvangwa said, blaming the opposition. State Security Minister Owen Ncube thanked security forces for “standing firm.”

But among those arrested are several ruling ZANU-PF party community leaders as well as a soldier and a police officer.

Zimbabweans had briefly rejoiced when Mnangagwa succeeded Mugabe, who was forced out in late 2017, thinking the new president would deliver on his refrain that the country “is open for business.” But frustration has risen over the lack of improvement in the collapsed economy, which doesn’t even have a currency of its own.

The UK’s minister for Africa, Harriett Baldwin, has summoned Zimbabwe’s ambassador to discuss “disturbing reports of use of live ammunition, intimidation and excessive force” against protesters.

The European Union in a statement late Thursday noted the “disproportionate use of force by security personnel” and urged that internet service be restored.

Balague said Morata reached an agreement with Sevilla but changed his mind after being contacted by Atletico, another La Liga side.

Nikola Kalinic or Gelson Martins are the players most likely to be sold by Spanish side Atletico.

“It seems to be a matter of finding a buyer for Kalinic,” Balague said.

“The players must use this game to hype themselves because their names would be in the history books of Kotoko if they qualify to the money zone on Sunday against Coton Sport from Cameroon in the CAF Confederation Cup”

The former Petroject attacker says players of Asante Kotoko should know that the club represents the people of Ashanti (Asanteman) and they should do all they can to bring smiles to the faces of the people in the region.

“As a player playing for Kotoko, you should have it in mind that you are playing for the entire Region (Asanteman) and not for yourself so they should play their hearts out on Sunday against Coton Sport”, Bekoe revealed on Kumasi-based Ashh FM.

He further admonished the players to eschew complacency and anticipate a tough game on Sunday.

  • National Media Commission urges Journalists to be security conscious

The National Media Commission, NMC, has urged Journalists in the country to be security conscious and also inform their colleagues of their whereabouts at any given time.

The call comes a day after the killing of a lead investigative journalist of Anas Aremeyaw Anas’ Tiger eye PI team Ahmed SualeHussein . The deceased was shot dead by unidentified assailants on January 16, 2019, at Madina close to his residence on his way back from work. According to the Chairman of the NMC, Yaw Boadu Ayeboafo, when journalists are conscious of their security most of the deaths recorded in the media industry can be avoided.

”When we are very very alert to certain developments and we do not take things for granted. If you were monitoring and you saw the face and mood of the person and you could recognize that this is not a friendly thing those are some of the little things we can do for ourselves and sometimes also we need to let people know where we are.”

Some Journalists in an interview with Citinews monitored by PrimeNewsGhana expressed worry about the death of the Tiger eye private investigator and how threatening their line of work is turning out to be.

”Most of us are not safe, the profession itself, we are not safe. You wake up to such news and you are like should you continue practising as a journalist”.

According to some of the journalists ”death is a natural phenomenon, you cannot do anything about it but in a situation where somebody decides to take the life of another person is where the issue is,because why would you do that? What is the government doing, what is the NMC also doing, what is the Ministry of Communication and Information doing”.

  • Protect students welfare by resolving PTA dues impasse – NUGS to stakeholders

The National Union of Ghanaian Students have called on the Ghana Education Service and the National Council of PTAs to as a matter of urgency resolve the current issues relating to the payment of PTA levies.

The Union believes that such a resolution within the shortest possible time will ensure that the welfare of the students is not risked in any way.

The GES issued a directive to second cycle institutions ordering the immediate halt in the payment of PTA levies.

This move is to enable them to streamline such payments as some second cycle institutions are taking advantage of that to burden students and parents with exorbitant fees, a situation the Free SHS sought to address.

The National Council of PTAs has given an indication of their willingness to meet relevant stakeholders to address the issue.

However, the National Union of Ghanaian Students wants this process fast-tracked as they insist “In the end, this issue concerns all students in second cycle institutions and we at NUGS remain resolute with our commitment to protect, defend and uphold the welfare of every Ghanaian student especially, our Senior High School Students.”

    Below is their press release.

An Emergency Meeting between GES and National Council of PTAs needed to review the PTA Levies

Following a directive from the Director General of GES, the Heads of all Senior High Schools have been asked to refrain from collecting PTA dues.
According to the Director General, his office is concerned with the proliferation of all manner of levies under the guise of PTA dues.

The National Council of Parent Teacher Associations (PTAs) as well, plans to hold a consultative meeting with relevant stakeholders over the suspension of PTA dues in second cycle institutions.

We, at NUGS, believe a consultative meeting with all stakeholders especially an emergency meeting between the Ghana Education Service and the National PTA is very necessary and should be held immediately.

Since the collection of these fees is directly or indirectly, for students welfare, we urge the GES and National Council of the PTAs to hasten the process of coming together with a common position on the PTA dues.

In the end, this issue concerns all students in second cycle institutions and we at NUGS remain resolute with our commitment to protect, defend and uphold the welfare of every Ghanaian student especially, our Senior High School Students.

    Thank You.

Hundreds of sub-chiefs also paid homage to the regent amidst drumming and dancing and firing of muskets.

Vice President Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia, was the key member of government at the occasion, which was the second vibrant display of culture in the last month following the funeral of the late Yaa-Naa Mahamadu Abdulai IV in Yendi.

On Friday evening, there is expected to be the selection and enskinment of a new Yaa Naa by elders of Dagbon.

Nana Baffour Asabere Kugyawoaso Ababio III led the Asanteman delegation to pay a courtesy call on the Regent of Dagbon, Kampakuya Na Abdulai Yakubu Andani at the Gbewa Palace earlier on Thursday.

The Asante chiefs performed their cultural and customary dance at the forecourt of the Old Gbewa Palace, as part of the funeral.

The Asanteman delegation graced the occasion just as they did during the funeral rites ceremony of the late Overlord Ya Na Mahamudu Abdulai which was performed by the Abudu royal family of Dagbon a few weeks ago.

The Minority in Parliament was also represented, led by its Chief Whip, Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak.

He was accompanied by the Tamale North MP, Alhassan Suhuyini; MP for Zabzugu, Alhassan Abaako among others.

  • Our water is clean and healthy Bel-Aqua dismisses smear campaign

Blow Chem Industries, manufacturers of Bel-Aqua Mineral Water has dismissed the viral video on social suggesting their product is unhealthy.

The company It wants the public to disregard such claims, stating that its products are certified by the Foods and Drugs Authority.

In a statement signed by its Head of communication Emmanuel Quist, Blow Chem said: “Management of Bel-Aqua Mineral Water wishes to educate members of the general public on healthy ways to transport and store bottled-water in order to avoid contamination in the wake of a video in circulation which is alleging algae growth in a bottle of Bel-Aqua purchased by an alleged customer.”

It added: “We wish to emphasize that Bel-Aqua is produced under the strictest hygiene and health conditions supervised by the Food and Drugs Authority, which ensures that the water produced is kept whole and fresh until consumption.

“However, this quality, just like any other bottled water, and by extension, any manufactured product, may be compromised if not handled properly during transportation and storage leading to post-factory contaminations like the current case in point.”

    The following are the main pointers to remember when transporting and storing bottled water before use;
    Do not expose to sunlight

Bottled water exposed to the sun during transportation or storage is unhealthy for the consumer as it exposes the water to the BPA material used in manufacturing the bottle.
Another possible manifestation of over-exposure of bottled water to sunlight is the presence of algae.

According to the International Bottle Water Association (IBWA), “When water (Bottled Water) is exposed to extended periods of direct sunlight or heat sources, algae or mold may infrequently develop. Although this is not a general concern, the bottled water industry wants you to enjoy the freshest, cleanest water possible, and storing water in a cool place out of direct sunlight helps assure that.”

Prolonged exposure of bottled water to sunlight may also lead to sedimentation of minerals in the water, causing them to appear in the water as crystalized particles. This is not harmful to the consumer, though it may seem alarming.

Do not store close to chemicals or strong fragrances

Bottled-water is generally stored in plastic bottles that have pores which allow thoroughfare for chemical particles in the environment they are stored in. Therefore, bottled water must be stored in places rid of chemicals and poisonous substances that can compromise the quality of the water.

Report all cases of suspected unwholesome products to the FDA

We encourage members of the general public to report all suspected cases of unwholesome water products to the Food and Drugs Authority, as it is the right thing to do. This will help the authority investigate the underlying cause of the alleged defects.

    Concerning Video In Circulation

We entreat our cherished customers and members of the general public to disregard the impression being created that water from our factory is unwholesome, and rather encourage you to purchase your favorite Bel-Aqua from vendors who uphold the right storage and transportation standards.

  • Police yet to question me over journalist’s murder – Kennedy Agyapong

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong has discounted media reports that he has been invited for questioning over the death of murdered investigative journalist Ahmed Hussein-Suale.

The outspoken MP said he has not been invited by the Police or any of Ghana’s security agencies over comments he made about Hussein-Suale last year in a televised broadcast on NET2, a television channel he (Mr Agyapong) owns.

The journalist Hussein-Suale was an employee of Tiger Eye Private Investigations, a private security firm until he was gunned-down late Wednesday by two unidentified gunmen on a motorbike while driving home around Madina in Accra.

Speaking in an interview Thursday afternoon on Asempa FM, Mr Agyapong adviced the Police to make Tiger Eye PI founder, Anas Aremeyaw Anas the subject of their probe because of the speed with which he released the video of him (Agyapong) advising the public to attack Hussein-Suale in the aftermath of his employee’s death.

“I am innocent, the truth will set me free,” Mr Agyapong screamed when asked if he had anything to do with the murder.

He also took issue with the Police focus on social media posts as part of their investigations, describing it as nonsense.“Nonsense, as soon as the Police says this, they don’t know their job. You gotta investigate… I don’t have a problem with him, he (Hussein Suale) never got the chance to set me up,” he stressed.

He said the video posted by Anas was an attempt to divert Police attention, making the investigative journalist a prime suspect in Hussein-Suale’s death.

Mr Agyapong also disclosed that he was headed out of the country on business and will be back next Thursday.

The chiefs and people of Western North Region say they have been motivated by the abundance of natural resources in the area, and hopes it would translate into development and ultimately reflect in their welfare as a people when the region takes off.

Speaking in an interview, they said cash crops such as cocoa, cashew, timber, rubber and other plantations are under serious production in the region, and would contribute heavily to the prospects of agriculture in Western North.

Yaw Adu Amankwa, an indigene of the area argued “Our cocoa, rubber, timber and mineral resources continue to provide the nation with foreign exchange earnings (income) and we expect that central government will recognise this and consider our effort and assist the new region with development projects”

According to him, one critical challenge confronting local governance in Ghana is the lack of financial resources to influence development of regions, metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies.

“This disturbing challenge, has caused an imbalanced structure in development distribution, and rendered many local governance structures ineffective”, he said.

President of Western Region House of Chiefs Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi (II) who was instrumental in supporting the creation of the new region expressed confidence in the locals to drive the development agenda of the area.

This country is a Unitary State and all proceeds emanating from resource exploitation are put in the consolidated fund for central government to determine how they are disbursed for development”, he said.

In the case of Western North for instance, he said agriculture remained a thriving business. He said what the new region actually requires is value addition to these available resources.

He cited the impact the implementation of the one district one factory could make in transforming the local economy of all the districts making up the new Region.

He said one of the companies establishing its presence in the region has decided to add value to cocoa waste to create energy. “This company will be producing thirty (30) mega watts of power” as an Independent Power Producer (IPP) for Volta River Authority (VRA) which is playing the role of an offtaker.

He revealed that there is another company going into bauxite development at Awaso, which could change the face of the local economy.

Projects of these nature, he said would succeed in creating jobs and assist in building the local economy.

    Citizens participation in local governance

The Concerned Youth of Sefwi, who have declared their willingness to support the development agenda of Western North Region campaigned vigorously during the referendum, to activate citizens participation in the governance process.

They succeeded in wetting the appetite of the electorates to come out in their numbers to vote during the exercise, and have since pledged to shoulder the development agenda of the local area.

Meanwhile Police in Bibiani as well as Sefwi Bekwai and Wiawso in the Western North Region recently received a pick-up vehicle each to boost their work.

Former Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Bulk Oil Storage and Transportation (BOST) Alfred Obeng Boateng, donated the vehicles worth 525,000 cedis.

The gesture, he noted was in response to an appeal made by the police for assistance to combat crime in the area.

This donation followed a similar intervention in which Mr. Obeng Boateng gave a 110 kva generator valued at 120,000 cedis to Bibiani Government Hospital.

At a durbar observed at Sefwi Bekwai, he noted that government was basically responsible for development of the country.

However, he said delay in delivery of projects and services, being caused by inadequate resources can be disappointing hence a cogent reason for citizens to participate in the governance process by making development a shared responsibility.

“There is no doubt that without adequate police protection, the criminals, particularly, the armed robbers will not only take our cash and movable property but also our lives. Therefore, this gesture is for the safety and security of the inhabitants of Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai and Sefwi Wiawso Municipalities,” he emphasized.

These three areas he mentioned above, clearly fall within the Western North Region which was heavily endorsed by indigenes during the referendum.

Mr. Obeng Boateng who played a key role in the process, entreated natives, home and abroad, to contribute to developing the area.

“The big question which I usually ask is that, if you and I do not help; who else should do it for us, if the need arises?” he asked rhetorically.

Aside Alfred Obeng, former Western Regional Minister Paul Evans Aidoo, current Western Regional Minister Dr. Kweku Afriyie, have all been pushing hard the development of the area, using the creation of the new region as the springboard to further advance the agenda.

  • Majority of Oti supports Jasikan for Oti regional capital as Krachi, Dambai and Nkwanta trail

At a crunch presentation of bids and endorsement meeting of the Joint Consultative Committee (JCC) of the Oti Movement, the body that championed the creation of the Oti region, in Accra on Wednesday, January 16, 2019, Jasikan was overwhelmingly supported to host the regional capital of Oti Region.

Chiefs and people and their representatives from Kadjebi, Biakoye, Santrokofi, Akpafu, Likpe, Lolobi (SALL) and Jasikan threw their support behind Jasikan to serve as the Capital for Oti Region.

This came on the back of Jasikan presenting a Capital Territory proposal, which readily spreads development instead of the conventional capital town adopted by the other contenders Krachi, Dambai and Nkwanta South. With the Capital Territory concept, Jasikan would host the Regional Administration, whiles Biakoye, Akan, Buem and SALL host other important facilities of the region.

While Dambai got the support of only Nkwanta North, no district supported either Kete Krachi or Nkwanta South, leaving them in the cold.

Majority of the people at the meeting discounted Dambai as the central location of the region, because it is not the actual geographical center of the Oti Region. The regional ought to be located at a nodal position that is easily accessible from all part of the region and this the people thought fell on Jasikan.

The JCC had approved of a ten (10) point Criteria for use as the basis for analysing and selecting an appropriate location as the regional capital.

This notwithstanding, it was observed that Jasikan rated high in almost all the 10 key criteria for scoring. Among the ten factors used were the Historical role played by the proposed center for the entire proposed region, Accessibility and average travel time to and from other parts of the region, Centrality/ Modality of the proposed centres, United and generally accepted traditional authority, Assurance of Peace and Security, Availability and level of current social infrastructure and access to a well-drained land which is also free of litigation among others.

In attendance were Chiefs and representatives from Buem, Nkonya, Worawora, Kadjebi, Tapa, Nkwanta North, Nkwanta South, Karachi East, Karachi West, and Krachi Nchumuru and SALL.

  • DVLA to prosecute offenders for defrauding public with new e-system

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has warned that it will prosecute anyone who attempts to defraud the public using its new e-online registration system.

The system, which has been in place since January 4, this year is aimed at simplifying the processes of registering car.

This is aimed at reducing long hours spent at the offices of the DVLA offices to prevent overcrowding.

Read: DVLA commended for ensuring smooth vehicle registration process

The process requires customers to have a Tax Identification Number(TIN), the necessary custom documents, a valid ID card, the car to be registered and also to be present for the registration.

In an exclusive interview with Citi Business News, Regional Manager at the Tema DVLA office Mr. Attah Kumah Mensah said that persons who will try to beat the system will be prosecuted.

“We have never failed to prosecute individuals who are caught engaging in illegal acts that in terms of the car registration process, we just do not make so much noise about it. Going forward, we will continue with prosecutions especially with this new system”.

The system which is currently being piloted at the Tema DVLA office has so far registered 25 cars, of which 24 are private and 1 commercial.

Abigail Apau is a Data Entry Officer at the DVLA office in Tema and explains the process which according to her takes about 4o minutes.

“The system goes through a series of processes, first you will have to present the vehicle to DVLA for customs clearance, technical inspection and identity check,” she said.

“The DVLA officer will then select the appropriate vehicle category and generate an invoice. The next step will be to undergo bio metric capture at DVLA office. A new registration document which includes the certificate and vehicle smart card, the number plate and other documents will be issued,” she added.

Administrator at the office, Vessa Owusu Preprah however says the system has not been without some challenges but assures the DVLA is doing all it can to rectify them.

“Everything has been smooth so far our only challenge is that most of the customers do not want to come to the office themselves but with the system it requires that they be present we are however working to address that issue.”

Speaking to Citi Business News, a customer who used the new system, Yaw expressed his excitement about the platform.

“ I was really surprised at how swift the whole process was because when I compare it to a previous registration I did in 2012 there is a huge difference. This new one took me about thirty minutes but the previous one lasted for about five hours”

  • NADMO begins assessment of Pedestrian Mall fire; halts operations

The National Disaster Management Organization has began investigating circumstances that led to the burning of some stalls at the Kwame Nkrumah Pedestrian Mall Wednesday evening.

Traders whose wares, worth millions of Ghana Cedis were destroyed are still weeping and counting their loss, hours after the raging fire reduced their stalls to ashes.

The fire which started around 7pm on Wednesday January 16, 2019 has its cause officially unknown.

Read: Odawna fire outbreak: Residents, traders blame fire service for increasing damages

Although no casualties were recorded, the traders have lamented the late arrival of the fire service and their inefficiency in regulating the fire.

Promising a speedy assessment of the situation, Director-General for National Disaster Management Organization Mr. Eric Nana Agyemang-Prempeh said the market will be closed down for the next four days to allow the fire service and police work on a comprehensive report.

According to them, while NADMO is ready to help the affected victims, measures must be put in place to avert any subsequent outbreak.

Read: Over 5,000 fire outbreaks recorded in 2018

“We have had a stakeholders meeting with NADMO coordinating and this meeting had the Member of Parliament, police and fire service present. The conclusion to it is that the market women who are affected should stay out of the market to allow proper investigations to go on. This is the fourth time this has happened and we cannot move on as a nation without identifying what really is the cause. So we find that out and we sit down with the market managers and executives to put up preventive measures. We have given them till Monday because by then all the reports will be ready, we will meet here and conclude on the way forward. So we are closing the market from now till Monday.” He said.

The Member Of Parliament for Klottey Korle, Zanetor Agyeman-Rawling adding her voice said the constituency was going to organise a durbar so petty rivalry and issues among the traders will be addressed.

According to her, as stakeholders, the traders needed to come together and be more security conscious so market fires which have become a norm in Ghana will be a thing of the past.

“When a situation like this happens you need to involve the stakeholders and the traders are the majority stakeholders in this case. Sometimes the worry is that, keeping the market close will lead to a protest but the fact is if we communicate effectively and they are part of the process and understand that this is for their safety, their support will be given. Some of the issues that the fire service raised are the fact that there are no hydrants and these must also be looked at. Access to the market is so difficult and we are actually thankful this did not happen during the day because that may have even led to a stampede and death. There are a lot of things that are not being done properly and we are going to offer our support to the executives to enforce some of these things. This fire did not burn a shop based on the political party of its owner so we must talk to the people that they are one and we all need to work together to resolve this. A lot of work needs to be done. This should be awake up call that this should not happen anywhere else.”

But speaking to ghanaweb.com, the devastated traders called for a speedy resolution to their plights.

This according to them is because most of the traders are operating their businesses with loans from banks and family members and would have to pay back within the shortest possible time.

Currently over a hundred and fifty shops are believed to have been gutted by the fire which is rumoured to have been caused by gas cylinders used by chop bar operators in the market.

  • Referendum on electing MMDCEs and district elections slated for September

Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Hajia Alima Mahama, has said a referendum to the amend a part of the Constitution would be held alongside the district elections in September.

The article, which is an entrenched provision, states that “Subject to the provisions of this Article, a political party is free to participate in shaping the political will of the people, to disseminate information on political ideas, social and economic programmes of a national character; and sponsor candidates for election to any public office other than to the District Assemblies or lower local government units”.

Read: Oti referendum unites NDC, NPP

She said an amendment to this article is critical if MMDCEs would be elected on a partisan basis through the universal adult suffrage system.

“As an entrenched Article, a national referendum is required for it to be amended,” she said.

Hajia Mahama said this at a meeting held to sensitize and create a better understanding of the election processes among the representatives of the various political parties.

The forum held under the theme: “Electing MMDCEs for Improved Local Decentralisation and Good Governance”, was also used to discuss the proposed national road roadmap for the elections, expected to take off in 2021.

The Minister said, “A draft bill for amendment of the article has been approved by Cabinet and sent to the Speaker of Parliament who has sent it to the Council of State for advice. The Council of State has given its advice and the Attorney General has since gazetted the Bill”.

Hajia Mahama said per the constitutional standard required to approve the referendum amendment, at least 40 percent of the persons entitled to vote in Ghana must vote at the referendum.

She said it is part of the requirement that at least 75 percent of those who voted must approve the bill.

To ensure adequate sensitization of the public, Hajia Mahama said the Ministry is collaborating with all key institutions including the Electoral Commission and the National Commission for Civic Education to ensure its smooth implementation.

The Ministry has also engaged the media on the roadmap for the election of MMDCEs to enable them to appreciate and accurately report on the process leading to the election in 2021.

  • LA teachers strike for ‘practically same reasons’ as 29 years ago

This isn’t the first time Los Angeles teacher Yvette Olivares Estrada walked out of the classroom for better conditions and pay.

Twenty-nine years ago, about a year after she became a teacher, she went on strike for “practically the same reasons”, the English and History teacher at Hollenbeck Middle School told Al Jazeera on Tuesday.

“Here we are again, fighting for the same things,” she said on day two of a strike that has brought more than 30,000 teachers in the second-largest school system in the United States out of their classrooms.

Estrada joined thousands of teachers who rallied and marched in downtown Los Angeles on Tuesday, demanding a 6.5 percent pay increase, smaller class sizes, less testing, new hires of librarians, counsellors and nurses and a moratorium on new charters.

Read: US deploys troops to Gabon amid fears of unrest in DR Congo

The strike came after United Teachers Los Angeles (UTLA), the union representing the educators, and the district reached an impasse over the demands. On Wednesday, the strike continued without an end in sight.

Daniel Barnhart, UTLA secondary vice president, told Al Jazeera a day earlier that the union and school district have yet to resume negotiations.

“We’re still waiting for them to reach out. I’m checking my email, we’re looking for a phone call, it’s not happening,” he said.

The union has been in negotiations with the school district since April 2017. The union rejected an offer last week of $130m in funding that included providing a full-time nurse in elementary schools and cut class sizes by two students in middle schools.

“Last Wednesday’s offer was to spend less than five percent of their [nearly] $2bn reserve for one year and ignore every other demand that we have on the table about the future of our schools,” Barnhart said.

The offer and stalled negotiations prompted teachers in 900 schools throughout the city to strike, while many classes, staffed with substitute teachers, continued in some capacity.

    ‘Teachers deserve a pay rise’

This week’s strike is the first work stoppage in the city since May 1989 when 20,000 teachers walked out of the classroom for nine days. They returned to the classroom after winning a pay rise.

Estrada said that today school budgets fail to meet the needs of students.

“We have a nurse that works once a week, three hours a day,” she said. “That’s what 1,200 kids get in this school. We have classroom sizes of 38 to 42 kids. It’s unconscionable.”

Parent Julie Ortega, who joined Estrada and other teachers on the picket line at Hollenbeck Middle School, said that although she’s wary of the possibility of a drawn-out strike, she’s ready to support the teachers.

Read: Set for second term as Swedish PM, Lofven faces balancing act

“I don’t want my child stuck in a class of more than 30 students,” said Ortega referring to growing classroom sizes that have come to characterise her 12-year-old daughter’s school. “The teacher’s deserve a pay rise. [Students] are our future, and I know we need to invest in them. I’m here to support.”

Some parents have continued to drop their kids off at schools, presenting a challenge to the striking teachers’ aim of pressuring district officials to the negotiation table in light of a sharp decline in student attendance.

Superintendent Austin Beutner said the district lost $15m on the first day of the strike due to the loss of state funding based on enrollment.

The Los Angeles School District overwhelmingly serves low-income communities, where 400 campuses are considered “high poverty” and students qualify for subsidised lunches. More than 70 percent of students are Latino.

Some parents find it difficult to skip work or look after children in light of school shutdowns.

“If I was working and I didn’t have anyone to take care of my child, I would have to bring her to school,” said Ortega. “That’s what I feel a lot of parents do. They have to stay home with them and [many] don’t have the resources to pay for somebody to watch them, so they have to drop them off at school.”

    ‘Organising for a long time’

At the neighbouring Theodore Roosevelt High School, with an enrollment of 1,400 students, History teacher and union board member Gillian Russom said more funding would slash class sizes and the fill the need for socioemotional and health-related support for a low-income student of colour.

“We’ve been organising for a very long time because of the really unjust conditions of learning in our public schools. We are the richest state in the country and the fifth largest economy in the world and we’re 43rd in the nation in per pupil funding,” said Russom.

Russom also pointed to a clause within the current contract that allows the district to violate previously agreed-upon contractual caps.

“Our district has a clause that says even when we set numbers on class sizes they can violate them if they feel there is a fiscal emergency. So that’s one piece we’re finally trying to get rid of in this contract fight,” she said.

The district’s latest offer proposed a new clause that would ignore agreed-upon caps on class size contingent on changes in pension costs and student enrollment.

Every year, the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) allocates funding based on school enrollment estimates and some schools like Felicitas & Gonzalo Mendez High School, opened in 2009, have been able to meet those projections and secure the funding. But many schools in the district have lost students to charter schools. The union estimates a 287 percent increase in the overall presence of charter schools in Los Angeles.

Felicitas & Gonzalo Mendez High School teacher Peter Olson said a drop in school enrollment displaces teachers and presents a series of issues.

“A lot of schools have been losing students to charters and there have been a number of schools even in this community that have lost teachers. Teachers have been displaced and when teachers are displaced, class sizes increase because there are fewer teachers to go around.”

Teachers rallied on Tuesday in front of the California Charter School Association, an organisation leading legislative lobbying on behalf of charter schools in the state. Los Angeles now has 224 charter schools and leads nationally in both charter schools and students.

During a press conference on Tuesday, Superintendent Austin Beutner noted the strike’s enormous effect on Los Angeles but said funding restrictions prevent the district from meeting the union’s demands.

“Today as yesterday all 1,240 schools in Los Angeles Unified remained open, and our buses remained on a regular schedule. But it’s by no means a normal day at LAUSD.” he said.

“Yesterday about 144,000 students attended school, on a normal rainy day we would have had closer to 450,000,” he added. “But this isn’t about the numbers, it’s about the students. To state the obvious, we need our educators back in our classrooms helping inspire our students.”

Beutner said his office has “costed out” the union’s demands to a total of about $800m in funding a year. The district previously proposed $130m in funding but Beutner has since said the district can’t meet those numbers. He said the solution would be to end the strike and join the union in pushing for more revenue from the state government.

Estrada, a seasoned teacher that joined the city’s previous landmark strike on the outset of her career, said it’s on the district to find solutions to mounting problems in schools. “Beutner needs to understand that we need to come together, work this out, and improve the quality of education for our kids.”

  • US senator links Trump troop withdrawal to deadly ISIL attack

A senior US senator has questioned President Donald Trump’s troop withdrawal announcement from Syria after four Americans were killed in a suicide attack by the armed group ISIL.

Lindsay Graham, a staunch Trump ally, directly blamed Wednesday’s attack in the northern Syrian city of Manbij on the president’s decision to quickly pull US forces out of the war-torn country.

The drawdown move “set in motion enthusiasm by the enemy we’re fighting”, said Graham, referring to Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, ISIS).

“My concern about the statements made by President Trump … is we’ve made people we’re trying to help wonder about us. And as they [ISIL] gets bolder, the people we’re trying to help get more uncertain. I saw this in Iraq and I’m now seeing it in Syria,” the senator said.

“We’re never going to be safe here unless we’re willing to help people over there who will stand up against radical ideology,” Graham added.

Read: Brazil deploys troops to stop violence in Fortaleza

At least 19 people, including Syrian civilians and US troops, were killed after a blast struck near a US-led coalition patrol, less than a month after Trump announced the withdrawal.

Two US soldiers, one Pentagon civilian, and one contractor were killed in the attack.

The attack called into question Trump’s claim that ISIL has been defeated in Syria – his stated reason for pulling 2,000 US troops from the country.

US Vice President Mike Pence repeated the claim on Wednesday after the attack, saying the ISIL “caliphate has crumbled” and the armed group “has been defeated”.

Pence said he and Trump “condemn the terrorist attack … and our hearts are with the loved ones of the fallen”.

“As we begin to bring our troops home, the American people can be assured, for the sake of our soldiers, their families, and our nation, we will never allow the remnants of ISIS to reestablish their evil and murderous caliphate – not now, not ever,” said Pence.

Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan weighed in on the controversy, saying he didn’t expect the attack to affect Trump’s pullout decision.

The American forces stationed in Manbij work closely with the Kurdish YPG militia that controls areas of northern Syria near Turkey’s border.

Ankara considers the US-backed YPG to be a “terrorist” group and has threatened to invade the region to scatter the militia.

Tensions have risen between the NATO allies Turkey and the US as Trump has demanded that any American troop withdrawal must be accompanied by a pledge from Ankara not to target its YPG allies.

Security analyst Yusuf Alabarda told Al Jazeera the ISIL attack targetting US forces was likely in response to the American troop withdrawal annoucement. He noted the heads of the US and Turkish militaries met on Wednesday in Brussels to organise a security zone in northern Syria after the withdrawal.

“It was very bad timing since for two years there hasn’t been a suicide attack in the Manbij area. Turkish officials and the Trump administration are very decisive on the troop withdrawal. Both countries’ leadership won’t be manipulated by such kinds of attacks inside Syria,” Alabarda said.

Read: President Trump ‘to pull thousands of troops’ from Afghanistan

“These areas – after the turmoil and chaos since the war started – is a safe haven for all kinds of terrorist activities. Any kind of intelligence agency that tries to manipulate the United States’ decision can create chaos in such style,” he added.

    No timetable for withdrawal

Trump’s withdrawal announcement last month surprised many politicians in Washington as well as Western and Kurdish allies fighting alongside the US against ISIL.

The move prompted US Secretary of Defense James Mattis to resign, and the top US envoy in the anti-ISIL fight, Brett McGurk, to leave his post earlier than expected.

Trump’s decision was initially expected to be carried out swiftly, but the timetable became vague in the weeks following his announcement.

Last week, the US military began pulling out equipment from the northeast into neighbouring Iraq. No troops are known to have withdrawn yet.

  • Brexit: Theresa May pushes for cross-party consensus

Theresa May is to meet MPs to try to find a way forward for Brexit, after her slim victory in the no-confidence vote.

The PM saw off a bid to remove her government from power by 325 to 306 votes, the day after her plan for leaving the EU was rejected.

Afterwards, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn refused to join talks unless the threat of a no-deal exit was ruled out.

The PM said she wanted to approach discussions in a “constructive spirit”.

Speaking outside Downing Street after talks on Wednesday night with the Lib Dems, SNP and Plaid Cymru, Mrs May called on MPs to “put self-interest aside”.

She must present a new plan for EU withdrawal to Parliament by 21 January.

Read: Brexit: Theresa May faces ‘meaningful vote’ on her deal

“It will not be an easy task, but MPs know they have a duty to act in the national interest, reach a consensus and get this done,” she said.

The prime minister is expected to hold meetings with both Tory Brexiteers and the DUP – both of whom rejected her withdrawal deal earlier this week – on Thursday.

BBC assistant political editor Norman Smith said that Environment Secretary Michael Gove, Cabinet Office Minister David Lidington and Brexit Secretary Steve Barclay will also hold talks with senior opposition politicians.

However, when asked what the government was willing to compromise on, Conservative Party chairman Brandon Lewis refused to give specifics.

He told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme that Mrs May would not consider a customs union and that he did not believe a new referendum was “the right way to go”.

The UK is due to leave the European Union on 29 March.

Meetings, on their own, are not a Plan B. Conversations, are not by themselves, compromises.

To get any deal done where there are such clashing views all around, it requires give and take. It feels like a political lifetime since there has been a fundamental dispute in the cabinet, in the Tory party and across Parliament. Theresa May has stubbornly, although understandably, tried to plot a middle course.

But that has failed so spectacularly at this stage. Ultimately she may well be left with the same dilemma of which way to tack.

It’s clear, wide open, in public, that the cabinet is at odds with each other. Just listen to David Gauke and Liam Fox on whether a customs union could be a compromise for example.

The answer for her is not suddenly going to emerge from a unified tier of her top team. There are perhaps five or six of the cabinet who would be happy to see that kind of relationship as a way to bring Labour on board.

What happened in the vote of no confidence?

The prime minister survived a vote of no confidence in her government by a margin of 19 votes, thanks to the backing of the 10 members of the DUP. Had they switched allegiance, the government would have lost by one vote.

This came after MPs voted against Mrs May’s plans for Brexit on Tuesday night by a historic margin when it was rejected by 230 votes – the largest defeat for a sitting government in history.

Now the prime minister has invited party leaders and other MPs to discuss what needs to be done to reach Parliamentary consensus on any future deal.

However, she has been criticised for her unwillingness to compromise or alter her red lines.

    Corbyn’s red line

Mr Corbyn has said that before any “positive discussions” can take place, the prime minister should rule out a no-deal Brexit.

The BBC’s political editor Laura Kuenssberg said it wasn’t a straightforward judgement for the Labour Party, as many members do not want Brexit to happen – meaning Mr Corbyn could be criticized for helping the process if he attends.

    The view from other parties

The Lib Dems, the SNP and Plaid Cymru all spoke with Mrs May on Wednesday.

The SNP’s Westminster leader, Ian Blackford, said that the extension of Article 50 – the mechanism that allows the UK to leave the EU – the ruling out of a no-deal Brexit, and the option of a second EU referendum would have to form the basis of future discussions.

Plaid Cymru’s Westminster leader, Liz Saville Roberts, said they were “committed to finding a real solution” but “that means taking a no deal Brexit off the table and a People’s Vote on our European future”.

Liberal Democrat leader Sir Vince Cable said he was encouraged by Mrs May’s “willingness to talk about these issues in detail”. The preferred choice of the party is another referendum.

But there remains deep division among Mrs May’s own MPs – including within her cabinet – about possible compromises, such as the option of staying in a customs union.

The Times newspaper claimed Leader of the House Andrea Leadsom and other cabinet Brexiteers want Mrs May to present MPs with a “Plan B” on Monday that would include a promise to impose a time-limit on the Northern Irish backstop – the fallback plan to avoid any return to physical border checks between the country and Ireland – and to negotiate a Canada-style free trade deal.

And the Telegraph reported it had seen a leaked transcript of a conference call in which Chancellor Philip Hammond told business leaders that a no-deal Brexit could be “taken off the table”.

Mrs May has insisted she will “deliver on the verdict of the British people” and that she is seeking the “widest possible views across parliament” on a Brexit deal.

She said: “I am disappointed that the leader of the Labour Party has not so far chosen to take part, but our door remains open.”

    Calls for new referendum

Meanwhile, Mr Blackford has also written to Mr Corbyn, along with other opposition leaders, to urge him to back another referendum as Labour’s official position.

And, in a letter published in the Times newspaper, more than 170 leading business figures called for Theresa May and Jeremy Corbyn to back a second referendum on withdrawal from the European Union.

“The priority now is to stop us crashing out of the EU with no deal at all.

“The only feasible way to do this is by asking the people whether they still want to leave the EU… politicians must not waste any more time on fantasies. We urge the political leadership of both the main parties to support a People’s Vote,” it said.

  • Kenya attack: 50 still missing after al-Shabab hotel raid

Fifty people remained missing on Thursday as Kenyan security forces searched for suspects involved in the brazen attack on a Nairobi hotel complex that killed 21 people.

The al-Shabab armed group, an al-Qaeda affiliate, said it carried out the attack in the Kenyan capital in response to US President Donald Trump’s decision to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. Two people accused of facilitating the attack have been arrested.

Kenya’s Red Cross said 50 people remained missing, raising the likelihood of a sharp rise in the death toll.

Of the victims, 16 were Kenyan, one was British, one was American, and three were of African descent but their nationalities were not yet identified, police said.

Uhuru Kenyatta, the president of Kenya, announced the end of the 20-hour siege at the DusitD2 complex that echoed a 2013 assault that killed 67 people at the Westgate mall in the same district.

“The security operation at Dusit complex is over and all the terrorists have been eliminated,” Kenyatta said in a televised address on Wednesday.

Authorities sent special forces into the hotel to flush out the gunmen. The president said more than 700 civilians were evacuated from the complex.

    Tormented night

It was a tormented night for families of those trapped as they waited outside the hotel with sporadic gunfire ringing out, and the rescue of dozens of people at about 3:30am (00:30GMT).

Mourning relatives and friends gathered at a nearby mortuary on Wednesday. Families who went to the Chiromo morgue were told they could not view bodies until a forensic investigation had been performed, provoking grief and anger.

“My sister is not in any of the hospitals and the last time we spoke she was a bit calm. But suddenly she started crying and shouting and I could hear gunshots and her phone remained on but she wasn’t speaking,” said a woman who gave her name as Njoki.

“We have no doubt her body is here,” she said, weeping.

    Coordinated attack

CCTV footage broadcast on local media showed four black-clad, heavily armed men entering the complex.

According to Kenya’s police chief, Joseph Boinnet, the coordinated assault began at 3pm local time (12:00 GMT) on Tuesday with an explosion that targeted three vehicles outside a bank, and a suicide bombing in the hotel lobby that severely wounded a number of guests.

Hiram Macharia, a marketing executive at LG Electronics, said security officers rescued him and some colleagues from their office two hours after the attack began. But one colleague did not survive.

“One of our colleagues went to the top of the building and his body was found there,” he said.

A police source told AFP news agency two attackers were shot dead on Wednesday morning after a prolonged shootout.

“The two have red bandanas tied around their forehead and bullets strapped around their chest with several magazines each,” the senior police officer said. “Each had an AK-47 which has been secured.”

The attack at DusitD2 was the first in Nairobi since the Westgate mall attack in 2013.

On April 2, 2015, another al-Shabab attack killed 148 people at the university in Garissa, in eastern Kenya.

The Westgate attack resulted in many upscale establishments and shopping centres in the capital – including the Dusit – putting up security barriers to check cars and pedestrians.

Like the attack at the Westgate Mall, this one appeared aimed at wealthy Kenyans and foreigners.

It came a day after a magistrate ruled three men must stand trial in connection with the Westgate Mall siege.

  • Kenya hotel attack death toll rises to 21

At least 21 people were killed when Somali militants stormed a luxury hotel compound in Nairobi, Kenya’s government has confirmed.

Hundreds were forced to flee the bloodshed at the DusitD2 hotel and business complex on Tuesday.

Some 28 injured people have been admitted to hospital, and Kenya’s Red Cross said 19 are still missing.

Somalia-based Islamist group al-Shabab said it was behind the attack, which triggered a 19-hour security operation.

President Uhuru Kenyatta said the siege ended with five jihadist attackers “eliminated”.

Kenya has been a target for al-Shabab since October 2011, when it sent its army into Somalia to fight the jihadist group.

The BBC’s Andrew Harding, in Nairobi, says cowering groups of civilians were escorted to safety by security forces throughout Tuesday night, amid sporadic bursts of gunfire and the boom of explosions that continued well beyond dawn. Many had spent hours hiding in their offices, or in bathrooms.

On the crowded street outside the large, upmarket complex, friends and relatives embraced those who emerged and thanked Kenyan security forces.

Mourners have now begun to bury the dead.

In a televised address, President Kenyatta said “every person that was involved in the funding, planning and execution of this heinous act” would be “relentlessly” pursued.

Two people believed to be linked to the attack were arrested after raids on Wednesday, AFP reported.

According to Reuters news agency, al-Shabab issued a statement calling the attack “a response” to US President Donald Trump’s decision to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

The move last year overturned decades of US foreign policy, and drew international criticism.

Jerusalem is a sacred city in Islam, Judaism and Christianity – and while Israel regards the whole of Jerusalem as its indivisible capital, Palestinians claim the eastern part of the city as the capital of a future state.

    Who are the victims?

US citizen Jason Spindler is among the dead. His brother, Jonathan, announced on Twitter that Jason had survived the 9/11 attacks in New York in 2001.

In an interview with US broadcaster NBC, Sarah Spindler said her son had been trying to “make a positive change in the third world in emerging markets”.

British citizen Luke Potter, who held dual South African nationality, was also killed, and another Briton was wounded, the UK Foreign Office said.

Kenyan James Oduor, commonly known as Cobra, was tweeting as the attack was unfolding. He was known for his love of football and was well-liked.

Two Kenyan friends, Abdalla Dahir and Feisal Ahmed, were having lunch together in the grounds of the hotel when the suicide bomber struck, Reuters news agency reports. Friends described the pair as inseparable.

    How did the attack unfold?

The attack began at about 15:00 local time (12:00 GMT) on Tuesday. The gunmen threw bombs at vehicles in the car park before entering the lobby, where one blew himself up, police say.

A woman working in a neighbouring building told Reuters: “I just started hearing gunshots, and then started seeing people running away raising their hands up and some were entering the bank to hide for their lives.”

Security camera footage showed at least four heavily armed men walking in and opening fire. There are reports they had been seen visiting the compound in recent days.

At 23:00, a government official said that all the buildings in the complex had been secured by security forces.

But just an hour later, gunfire and sporadic explosions were reported in the area. There was more heavy gunfire at about 07:00 on Wednesday.

Security forces then combed their way through the building where frightened workers had barricaded themselves inside.

  • Ghanaian woman in US abandons newborn in toilet

A woman gave birth to a baby boy and then left the newborn partially submerged in a toilet at her Lancaster County workplace, according to the district attorney’s office.

Emmanuella Osei, 23, of Reading, is charged with felony endangering the welfare of a child regarding the Monday night incident at an apartment in Warwick Township.

Police say Osei works for Greater Hearts Human Services as a care assistant, and was working at a unit in the Newport Commons apartment complex when the incident happened (the Newport community is not an assisted living facility but does have at least one unit operated by Greater Hearts).

The district attorney’s office said Osei called her supervisor multiple times to say she felt ill. She asked for someone to relieve her because she could not leave the patients alone. She eventually called her supervisor from a toilet around 10:20pm and asked the supervisor to call 911.

A responding officer found her in the bathroom with the door partially open. A large amount of blood and what appeared to be an umbilical cord were on the floor. The officer then pulled Osei from the toilet and found the child, partially submerged in the water.

Investigators believe the child had been in the water for about 10 to 15 minutes. He was cold to the touch, blue, unresponsive and not breathing, so the officer and medics performed CPR and likely saved his life, officials said.

The baby was taken to UPMC Pinnacle where he remains on a ventilator, in critical but stable condition. The extent of his injuries are not known.

Authorities said Osei made no attempts to help the newborn or remove him from the water, and she did not ask first responders how he was doing or request to see him.

Police arrested Osei Wednesday at a health facility where she had been since giving birth. She is being held in Lancaster County Prison without bail.

The district attorney’s office said Osei came from Ghana to live with her uncle last May. Officials said she knew she was pregnant but repeatedly denied it when asked by friends, co-workers and her uncle.

She has a second child, a 2-year-old daughter, living in Ghana, officials said.

Soon-to-be mothers who are worried about having a child, and are considering taking desperate measures to conceal their pregnancy, are reminded of the Safe Haven Law: it allows for a mother to drop their newborn off at a hospital or police department without repercussions. The baby must be in good health and free of any neglect, and less than 28 days old.
