  • Death toll from protests rises to 24

The number of protesters killed in Sudan has risen to 24 since demonstrations began last month, according the head of the country’s fact-finding committee, even as rights groups state a much higher toll.

According to Human Rights Watch at least 40 people have been killed in clashes during the anti-government demonstrations.

People took to the street on December 19 after the government tripled the price of bread. Since then, tensions have escalated into nationwide rallies, with protesters calling for President Omar al-Bashir to resign.

In response to the demonstrations, riot police and security agents have broken up the rallies by firing live ammunition and volleys of tear gas, rights groups reported.

Al Jazeera’s Hiba Morgan, reporting from Khartoum, said last week bullets were fired at a hospital in Omdurman, Sudan’s second largest city, targeting patients and doctors.

Al-Bashir, who has been ruling the country since a military coup in 1989 and remains wanted by the International Court of Justice for war crimes, has blamed the protests against his government on “conspirators”.

In a joint statement on Tuesday last week, the United States, United Kingdom, Norway and Canada condemned the violence and said Sudan’s “actions and decisions over the coming weeks will have an impact on the engagement of our governments and others in the coming months and years,” referring to ongoing efforts by the US and UK to normalise relations with Sudan.

Although the immediate trigger for the protests was the increase in the price of bread, Sudan has been facing a mounting economic crisis over the past year, partially caused by an acute shortage of foreign currency.

Repeated shortages of food and fuel have been reported in several cities, including the capital, Khartoum, while the cost of food and medicine has more than doubled.

Al-Bashir and other officials have blamed Washington for Sudan’s economic woes, having imposed a trade embargo on Sudan in 1997 that was lifted only in October 2017.

The president has remained defiant, telling thousands of loyalists at a Khartoum rally on Wednesday that his government would not give in to economic pressure.

“Those who tried to destroy Sudan… put conditions on us to solve our problems, I tell them that our dignity is more than the price of dollars,” al-Bashir said.

Across the Nile in Khartoum’s twin city of Omdurman, three demonstrators were killed on Wednesday as police fired tear gas to disperse the protest, the authorities said.

Al Jazeera’s Morgan said that there are concerns among the protesters that the government will escalate its use of force in an attempt to put down the protests.

“People are saying that the force used against them by the government is brutal and that it increases day by day,” Morgan said.

Human rights groups say more than 1,000 people have been arrested since the protests began, including opposition leaders, activists and journalists as well as demonstrators.

Without any major injury concerns, all members of the 18-man squad, who travelled for the playoff round first leg fixture, were in practice.

However, fans of the Porcupine Warriors, though, are still worried by the situation of experienced duo Jordan Opoku and Daniel Nii Adjei, who were conspicuously missing from the travelling party on Friday.

Prince Acquah and Stephen Nyarko were selected instead.

While Kotoko beat Kariobangi Sharks of Kenya 2-1 on aggregate in the Confederation Cup first round to make the playoffs, Coton Sport have been forced into the competition following a 3-2 aggregate defeat to Ismaily of Egypt in the Caf Champions League first round.

  • DR Congo election: Candidate Martin Fayulu appeals against result

An opposition presidential candidate in the Democratic Republic of Congo has filed an appeal in the constitutional court against last month’s poll result.

Martin Fayulu insists he won the vote and has demanded a manual recount, but the electoral commission declared rival Felix Tshisekedi the winner.

Troops have deployed near Mr Fayulu’s residence and outside the court.

Read: DR Congo candidate heads to court over result

He accuses Mr Tshisekedi, also an opposition candidate, of making a deal with outgoing President Joseph Kabila.

Mr Fayulu arrived on Saturday at the court.

Announcing the appeal, his lawyer Feli Ekombe said, quoted by AFP: “The petition demands the annulment of the results proclaiming Felix Tshisekedi president of the republic. It was introduced yesterday [Friday] and today we have come to get the receipts for this petition.”

Speaking earlier to BBC Africa editor Fergal Keane, Mr Fayulu said: “I will do whatever is possible for me to do to get the truth because the Congolese want change.”

On Saturday, Mr Fayulu repeated that the result did not reflect “the truth of the ballot boxes”.

Read: Opposition leader named winner in DR Congo poll

The electoral commission also said the pro-Kabila coalition had won a majority of parliamentary seats.

Several Western governments and the influential Roman Catholic Church in DR Congo have expressed surprise and concern at the declared results.

Mr Kabila has been in office for 18 years and the result, if confirmed, would create the first orderly transfer of power since independence from Belgium in 1960.

    What does Fayulu say?

Dozens of Fayulu supporters had gathered outside his residence in the capital, Kinshasa, to chant slogans against Mr Kabila and Mr Tshisekedi.

However they fled inside the building when the security forces arrived on Saturday, Reuters news agency reports.

Mr Fayulu admitted his court challenge would have little chance of success as the constitutional court was “composed of Kabila’s people” but he said he did not want to give his opponents any chance to say he had not followed the law.

“Felix Tshisekedi has been nominated by Mr Kabila to perpetuate the Kabila regime. Because today the boss is Kabila,” Mr Fayulu said.

“Mr Kabila cannot stay and make an arrangement with someone who will not have any power… Mr Tshisekedi knows himself that he did not win.”

Mr Fayulu said he feared there would be violence if the electoral commission did not give the true figures “polling station by polling station” and that it was the right of all Congolese to demonstrate according to the law.

    Has there been any violence?

Thousands of supporters of Mr Tshisekedi took to the streets to celebrate but those who backed Mr Fayulu also came out in protest.

Violent scenes were reported in Kikwit, where at least two policemen and two civilians were said to have been killed.

There were reports of several hundred students protesting against the result and being dispersed by tear gas in the town of Mbandaka.

Protests were also reported in Kisangani but the south, where Mr Tshisekedi has broad support, was mainly celebrating.

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres has urged all sides “to refrain from violence” and widespread unrest has not yet been reported.

What was the result of the election?
According to the National Electoral Commission (Ceni), Mr Tshisekedi received 38.5% of the vote in the 30 December election.

    The full results were:

    – Felix Tshisekedi – 7 million votes

    – Martin Fayulu – 6.4 million votes

    – Emmanuel Shadary – 4.4 million votes

Turnout was reported to be 48%.

    What could happen next?

Candidates must file any appeal to the constitutional court within 48 hours of the announcement of the provisional results.

Judges will then have seven days to deliberate.

Constitutional expert Jacques Ndjoli told the BBC there were three possible outcomes: the court could confirm Mr Tshisekedi’s victory, order a recount, or cancel the results altogether and call fresh elections.

The constitutional court has never overturned results before, and some think most of its judges are close to the ruling party.

If Mr Tshisekedi were confirmed as the winner, he would be expected to be inaugurated within 10 days.

  • Rashford can be as good as Kane – Man United boss

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says Marcus Rashford has the potential to be as good a centre-forward as England teammate Harry Kane as the pair prepare to face off in the Premier League this weekend.

Rashford is expected to line up as the spearhead of United’s attack when they face Kane’s Tottenham at Wembley on Sunday with both the team and striker on a hot run of form under the interim manager.

Rashford looks reborn under interim coach Solskjaer, scoring three times in the centre-forward position as United have rattled off four straight league wins since the Norwegian took over from the sacked Mourinho in December to close in on the Champions League places.

Read: Andy Murray retirement: Rafael Nadal says former world number one is ‘suffering’

“He can become a top, top striker,” said Solskjaer. “We can talk about Harry Kane and his class and I’m sure Marcus as well. He’s got the potential to get up there.

“He’s got frightening pace, he’s now become stronger and can hold the ball up for us. He’s a great link player.”

Kane, 25, has set the goalscoring standards in English football over the past three years — he was the league’s top scorer in 2015/16 and 2016/17 before finishing runner-up to Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah last season.

He won the Golden Boot at last year’s World Cup and this season is joint-top scorer alongside Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang on 14 goals.

Rashford, 21, scored four goals in his first two senior matches for United after being been given his debut by then-manager Louis van Gaal in February 2016, and established himself as a regular squad member at Old Trafford.

However, he was regularly restricted to substitute appearances after Jose Mourinho replaced Van Gaal as manager later that year, and was often asked to play in a left-sided role, with Romelu Lukaku as the central attacker.

    – ‘Top striker’ –

Since returning to United, where he played as a striker between 1996 and 2007, Solskjaer has spoken repeatedly of the need to return to the attractive, attacking football that they played for much of Alex Ferguson’s reign.

A central part of Ferguson’s philosophy was the development of players from the club’s academy, which Rashford joined at the age of seven.

Read: I am sure Egypt will manage to stage a great AFCON – FIFA President

United have a proud history of producing their own talent, having included at least one youth-team graduate in every first-team matchday squad since October 1937.

Solskjaer sees Rashford’s academy background as valuable, suggesting the forward has learned from a young age about the attacking style traditionally associated with United.

“Marcus has been brought up here,” he said. “There were a couple of training sessions here (I watched) with the young kids, and Chongy (Tahith Chong) and Angel (Gomes) and him and Jesse, they played together in a certain way. He’s a very exciting player to work with.”

Solskjaer, loaned to United by Norwegian club Molde for the rest of this season, reiterated that there have been no discussions with United’s executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward over the permanent job despite his desire to take the hot seat.

“No, we’ve not had that conversation,” said Solskjaer. “You don’t plan five or six months ahead and then suddenly change that after two weeks. No, nothing’s changed. We just keep working every single day on improving the team here.

“I work with a fantastic coaching staff, I have to say. We’ll put a plan together on how we want to look the next few months.”

  • Surviving R Kelly documentary: Daughter calls him a ‘monster’

R Kelly’s daughter has broken her silence about the allegations of sexual abuse surrounding her estranged dad.

On Thursday Buku Abi, real name Joann Kelly, posted on Instagram saying she was “devastated” by the recent accusations in the documentary Surviving R Kelly.

The 20-year-old said she hasn’t seen or spoken to him in years, calling him a “monster” and a “terrible” father.

R Kelly has denied all the allegations against him.

His lawyer has dismissed the documentary as “another round of stories” being used to “fill reality TV time”.

Buku voiced her support for her dad’s alleged victims and explained why she waited to speak out about the claims, saying they had been hard to come to terms with.

“It has been very difficult to process it all,” she wrote in a text-heavy Instagram Story. “Let alone gather all the right words to express everything I feel.”

The documentary Surviving R Kelly – shown on the US channel Lifetime – exposes detailed accounts of his alleged physical and emotional abuse of women.

It claims that the R&B singer allegedly ran an “abusive cult” in which he is accused of keeping women captive, against their wills.

The programme includes a number of interviews, including with singer John Legend who emphasised he believes the women.

Buku said to her 23,600 Instagram followers that she prayed for all the women that say they have been affected by her father’s alleged actions.

She said she didn’t want to talk about her personal life on social media, but because of the intense scrutiny that her father and family were now under, she felt the time was right.

“The same monster you are all confronting me about is my father. I am well aware of who and what he is. I grew up in that house.

“My choice to not speak on him and what he does is for my peace of mind. My emotional state. And for my healing.”

Buku signed off the post, saying that she was grateful for everyone’s support.

“This past year for my family has been very difficult, all the love and support you all continue to show is why we keep going.”

On Wednesday Lady Gaga apologised for working with R Kelly, and said she would be removing their duet Do What U Want from streaming services.

Gaga called the stories “horrifying” and “indefensible”, adding: “I stand behind these women 1000%.”

  • Trump-Russia: FBI probed whether Trump was working for Moscow – NYT

The White House has condemned a New York Times report that the FBI opened an inquiry into whether President Trump was secretly working for Russia.

Law enforcement officials became concerned by Mr Trump’s behaviour in May 2017, when he sacked FBI director James Comey, the paper says.

The investigation reportedly examined whether Mr Trump was a national security threat.

“This is absurd,” White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said.

“James Comey was fired because he’s a disgraced partisan hack, and his deputy Andrew McCabe, who was in charge at the time, is a known liar fired by the FBI,” she said in a statement.

Read: Haley, Ivanka Trump among possible World Bank nominees – Report

“Unlike President Obama, who let Russia and other foreign adversaries push America around, President Trump has actually been tough on Russia.”

In 2016, US intelligence agencies concluded that Russia had launched cyber-attacks and planted fake news stories on social media in a bid to boost Donald Trump and damage his rival for the presidency, Hillary Clinton.

What did the FBI supposedly investigate?

The reported counterintelligence investigation was rolled into the Mueller inquiry into Russian interference in the 2016 election, the paper reported.

The counterintelligence part sought to establish whether Mr Trump was knowingly aiding the Kremlin against America’s interests, or “had unwittingly fallen under Moscow’s influence”.

The criminal aspect concerned the president’s sacking of Mr Comey, and whether it was an obstruction of justice.

The ex-FBI director told a congressional hearing that Mr Trump told him “I expect loyalty,” and pressured him to end an inquiry into the president’s former national security adviser, Michael Flynn.

Flynn pleaded guilty in December 2017 to lying about his contacts with the Russian ambassador to the US.

Read: Trump walks out of shutdown talks with a ‘bye-bye’

    What happened to the inquiry?

The paper says the FBI investigation was taken over in full by special counsel Robert Mueller, who is leading an inquiry into whether Mr Trump’s campaign and transition teams colluded with Moscow to influence the 2016 US elections. Mr Mueller was appointed within days of Mr Comey’s firing.

Mr Trump has denied any complicity with Russia, and called the Mueller probe “the greatest political witch hunt in history”.

Nonetheless, the inquiry has put some of the president’s closest associates in the dock. His former personal lawyer Michael Cohen was sentenced to three years in prison for campaign finance and fraud crimes, while his campaign chief Paul Manafort was convicted of financial fraud.

The Times said it was not clear if the counterintelligence part of the FBI inquiry was still being pursued.

The paper’s report cited unnamed former law enforcement officials, “others familiar with the investigation,” and the congressional testimony of former FBI general counsel James. A Baker.

  • Weight gain: 5 hidden reasons you’re putting on pounds

If the needle on your bathroom scale starts creeping upward, or refuses to head downward, you’ll probably suspect the cause of this random weight gain is too many doughnuts, not diseases or drugs. But while the usual culprits—too much food, too little exercise—do account for most excess poundage, there are some surprisingly common medical conditions and widely used prescriptions that can add anywhere from a little to a lot—a whole lot—of excess weight. Here’s a checklist of what to watch for if you inexplicably find weight either packing on or unwilling to pack up and go.

    1. Hormonal Havoc

You’d think 40 or more extra pounds would be a clue that something’s amiss. Yet many of the 7-10 percent of premenopausal women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) often go for years unaware that their weight gain is in part due to this underdiagnosed condition, in which the ovaries and sometimes the adrenal glands, for unknown reasons, pump out too much testosterone, according to Andrea Dunaif, M.D., chief of endocrinology at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and professor of metabolism and molecular medicine at Northwestern University Medical School. Because the pounds typically pile on gradually beginning around puberty, or sometimes don’t surface until post-pregnancy weight refuses to budge, it’s frequently not obvious to PCOS sufferers, or their doctors, that there’s a medical trigger. Possible tip-offs of PCOS include thinning hair, excess facial hair, severe acne, irregular periods, impaired fertility—all hallmarks of a hormal imbalance.

It’s not the extra testosterone that triggers the weight gain, though. So what does? Short answer: Nobody knows, Dunaif says. While there seems to be a genetic component to PCOS—it runs in families—and a genetic component to the associated weight gain, there’s little to explain why some of those diagnosed develop weight problems while others do not. It is clear that cultural and environmental factors play a part because Europeans, and Americans on the coasts, who may feel more social pressure to be skinny, gain much less weight on average than do their (sometimes literal) sisters in middle America. The encouraging side of this is that while many women with PCOS feel like their weight is an immovable number (and treatment for PCOS does not help with weight loss), studies show that almost any woman with PCOS, treated or not, can, if put on a supervised diet and exercise program, lose 10 percent or more of body weight, Dunaif notes. Dropping such a moderate amount of weight often will, in turn, push male hormone levels down, leading to a resumption of regular periods and improved chances of conception.

    2. Thyroid Thickness

For the most part, blaming a sluggish thyroid for excess weight falls in the “you wish” category. “A lot of overweight people sort of hope they have hypothyroidism because it’s treatable,” comments Howard Eisensen, M.D., director of Duke University’s Diet and Fitness Center. “But it’s rare to find someone who’s significantly overweight because of an underactive thyroid. Even if there is decreased thyroid function, correcting it doesn’t do much to correct overweight because it doesn’t cause much gain to begin with.” If weight creep is on a small scale—in the 5- to 10-pound ballpark—it’s possible that hypothyroidism is behind it, though. If you have other telltale symptoms, such as brittle hair and nails, dry skin and a tendency to feel cold, definitely get checked out, or perform a thryroid self-exam. If your thyroid is to blame, treatment should shrink you a bit, but not because of much fat loss.

Another name for hypothyroidism is “myxedema,” which describes a kind of swelling from thick fluidlike tissue that is a hallmark of chronic low thyroid, explains George Bray, M.D., Boyd Professor at Louisiana State University. Most of thyroid-prompted weight gain, therefore, is actually due to excess fluid, not fat; correcting the thyroid problem banishes soggy tissue, along with its poundage, pretty effectively.

    3. The Weight of Water

As Bray points out, extra pounds don’t always equal fat, but are sometimes due to fluid retention—familiar to most women from premenstrual symptoms. If puffiness isn’t related to the menstrual cycle, though, it shouldn’t be ignored. “If someone’s retaining a lot of water—enough to add more than a couple of pounds—they’d better get to their physician very quickly to make sure they don’t have heart or kidney failure, both of which can cause edema, or swelling,” cautions Robert Berkowitz, M.D., medical director of the University of Pennsylvania Weight and Eating Disorders Program, though he adds that such problems are much more likely to afflict older women. “If you push a fingertip into your skin and it leaves a real indentation rather than springing back, that’s a tip-off that it’s fluid, not fat.” Other symptoms include shortness of breath (congestive heart disease), decreased urine output and loss of appetite (kidney failure), and fatigue and increased abdominal girth even without weight gain, for both. Liver disease and certain cancers can cause abnormal fluid accumulation in the abdomen as well, so any big boost in your waist size, with or without weight gain, warrants a look by your doctor, Eisensen advises.

    4. A Knot In Your Stomach

Unlikely, but worth mentioning: “If women have rapid, unexplained weight gain, it’s possible, though rare, that they have a tumor,” Eisensen reports. One example: ovarian tumors, some of which are benign, such as a dermoid tumor, a weird conglomeration of various body tissues (sometimes including teeth) that grow in the abdomen. “We’ve had patients gain over 100 pounds because of a huge ovarian tumor in their belly,” he adds. Again, don’t ignore any disproportionate expansion of your middle—check it with a physician.

    5. An Rx That Rounds Your Weight Up

Do you take any medicines on a regular basis? Then there’s a chance that one of them may be nudging your figure toward the fuller side. “It may be medications, more than diseases, that tend to contribute to weight problems,” Eisensen says, “and it’s helpful for people to know that there may be alternatives.” Some medicines that commonly cause weight gain:

Anti-depressants: Of the widely prescribed SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) and SNRIs (selective serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors), many researchers and clinicians believe that paroxetine tends to produce the most weight gain, though typically not more than several pounds. Other antidepressants, like fluoxetine, sertraline and venlafaxine also may lead to weight gain, especially if used long term. “Short-term use of most SSRIs and SNRIs is not associated with weight gain,” Eisensen says, “but if people are on them a year or longer, they can gain a few pounds or more.”

One of the most popular mood stabilizers is bupropion, which if anything, often helps patients drop a few pounds (but side effects may not make it a good choice for all overweight people with depression, Eisensen says). The point is that within each class of anti-depressants are some that tend to produce more weight gain, and some that tend to produce less, Bray explains.

Anti-diabetes drugs: Ironically, medications for Type II diabetes—the kind caused primarily by obesity—are often responsible for further weight gain, creating a vicious cycle. Although it’s not suitable for everyone, one effective anti-diabetes drug called Glucophage does not increase weight, says Berkowitz. And, he says, even some patients on other anti-diabetes drugs may be able to lose weight, under their doctor’s supervision, by scaling back on their dosage or adding a weight-loss drug such as orlistat, which partially blocks fat absorption.

Oral contraceptives: But the low-dose pills commonly prescribed now won’t add more than a few extra pounds, according to Berkowitz. Recent studies also back up that there is less of a connection between certain birth control and weight gain than previously thought.

Steroids: The most commonly prescribed are adrenocorticoids, used to control severe autoimmune problems, including asthma, arthritis, lupus and inflammatory bowel disease. Long-term use can increase appetite and hike weight by 20 pounds or more, Berkowitz says, but because the symptoms these steroids alleviate are potentially life-threatening, you don’t have much choice but to be on them when you need to be. However, doctors should be vigilant about cycling patients off medication when they don’t need it, which can help them lose some of the weight they have accumulated, he says.

“Many people who are on a medication and start to gain weight simply stop taking their medicine. Don’t do that!” Berkowitz cautions. “Keep taking it while you ask your doctor about switching to something else.” Whether a drug will cause you to gain weight is hard to predict, Eisensen says. “An anti-depressant that pushes one person’s weight up will push another’s down: Part of one person’s problem may be unrestrained eating, and as the depression comes under control, so does the emotional eating,” he says. “If a medication is a good choice for you, wait and see how it affects you, or look for another way to avoid the weight gain.”

  • Andy Murray retirement: Rafael Nadal says former world number one is ‘suffering’

Andy Murray’s impending retirement was a decision he had to take because he is “suffering”, says long-time rival Rafael Nadal.

The 31-year-old Briton announced on Friday that he will quit this year, and next week’s Australian Open could be the final tournament of his career.

“When you are going on court without a clear goal because you cannot move well and you have pain, then it is the time to take a decision,” Nadal said.

“He will be a big loss for tennis.”

Nadal, 32, knows more than most players what it is like to battle injury having had a catalogue of serious problems over the years, with his knees and wrists in particular.

Read: Police request Ronaldo DNA sample following rape allegation

But the Spaniard, a 17-time Grand Slam singles champion, says he has never “arrived” at the point of feeling he had to quit the sport.

“I always had the feeling that we’ll fix it,” said the world number two, who begins his Australian Open campaign against home wildcard James Duckworth on Monday.

“But, of course, there are periods of time that you don’t see the light. It is tough.

“I know it is hard mentally. It is tough when you have one thing, then another thing.

“Andy has probably been fighting to keep going for a long time. If he doesn’t feel that the injury can become better, he has probably done the right thing for his mental health.”

Scotland’s Murray first met Nadal, who has won 17 Grand Slam titles, when they were teenagers and played against each other at junior tournaments.

Read: Former AshGold defender Desmond Agbekpornu signs for Nigerian side Heartland

The pair have met 24 times as seniors, with the Majorcan winning 17 of the contests.

“I always had good relationship with him,” said Nadal. “We shared moments in my academy. We shared courts in the most important stadiums in the world, competing for the most important things. That’s impossible to forget.

“So all the best to him. We will miss him. But today is him. Tomorrow another one. We are not 20 any more. Our generation, everyone is more than 30 – these kind of things happen.

“He will be a very important loss for us, for the world of tennis, for the tour, for the fans. But that’s life. It seems like he had not a very long career because today players are playing that long. But he’s 31 – 10 years ago, if he retired at 31, we would say he had a great and very long career.”

  • 12 civilians killed in jihadist attack in Burkina Faso

Twelve civilians were killed on Thursday during a jihadist attack in the north of Burkina Faso, which has been battling a wave of Islamist violence, officials said Friday.

The west African country declared a state of emergency in several provinces at the end of last year and on Thursday replaced its army chief as it struggled to put a stop to a spate of such attacks.

In the latest violence, gunmen attacked a village market in broad daylight, the security ministry said in a statement issued late Friday.

“Around 30 armed individuals perpetrated… a terrorist attack in the village of Gasseliki,” it said, giving a toll of 12 dead and two wounded.

Read: Wife of French jihadist Cherif indicted in Paris

“A barn, a cart and six shops were also set alight,” it added.

A local source told AFP that the attackers “ransacked stores and opened fire on people who had gathered for the weekly market”.

Jihadist attacks began in northern Burkina Faso in 2015 but then spread to the east, near the border with Togo and Benin.

The country is part of the vast Sahel region and one of the poorest states in the world.

The region turned into a hotbed of violent extremism and lawlessness after chaos engulfed Libya in 2011, which was followed by an Islamist insurgency in northern Mali and the rise of Boko Haram in northern Nigeria.

Most attacks in Burkina Faso itself have been attributed to the jihadist group Ansarul Islam, which emerged near the Mali border in December 2016, and to the JNIM (the Group to Support Islam and Muslims), which has sworn allegiance to Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb.

Ansarul Islam emerged as violence spilled over from Mali, where radical Islamists seized key Sahara towns in 2012 before being ousted by French troops.

Smaller groups are also active, with the overall number of fighters estimated to be in the hundreds, according to security sources.

The groups are believed to be responsible for more than 270 deaths since 2015. The capital Ouagadougou has been hit three times and almost 60 people have died there.

The jihadists extend their hold gradually, forcing government workers and others who oppose them to flee. The violence has so far displaced some 40,000 people.

Read: Multiple injuries in suspected gas explosion at Paris bakery

In the north, armed groups move freely through the country’s porous borders.

The jihadists mainly target the security forces, but also attack government officials and local chiefs who oppose them.

Teachers are vulnerable due to the jihadists’ fierce opposition to secular, French education, with their threats and attacks sparking the closure of hundreds of schools in the north and the east.

As the country struggles to get on top of the violence, army chief Major General Oumarou Sadou was replaced on Thursday by General Moise Minoungou, according to a presidential decree read on public television.

  • Sudan worshippers turn on imam over protests against President Bashir

An influential Sudanese imam had to be removed from a mosque in the capital, Khartoum, after worshippers confronted him for not leading protests against embattled President Omar al-Bashir.

In a video shared on social media, a man appears to shout at imam Abdul Hai Yusuf, who often backs the government: “Get up and lead us from this mosque!”

A frantic crowd then chants “downfall [of the regime] only”.

Police fired tear gas at protesters who marched after Friday prayers.

Read: DR Congo candidate heads to court over result

Three weeks of demonstrations have left 22 people dead across the country.

The protests, initially against the rising cost of fuel and bread, have morphed to calls for Mr Bashir to step down to end his 30-year rule.

    What happened on Friday?

A video shared on Facebook appears to show a member of the Khatim al-Mursaleen mosque challenging Mr Yusuf, a Saudi-educated imam.

Mr Yusuf, who is known for encouraging his followers to march in solidarity with Gaza or Syria, had to be whisked from a door near the pulpit.

He has previously appealed to the government to exercise restraint in the current unrest.

Another video shows crowds chanting outside the mosque.

The authenticity of the videos could not be immediately verified.

Friday’s protests in Khartoum and nearby Omdurman appeared to draw more people than before and were more widespread, Reuters news agency reports.

Security forces chased the demonstrators but there were no immediate reports of casualties.

    Why are people protesting?

Demonstrations began on 19 December after the government announced price rises for fuel and bread.

The protests have escalated into broader calls for an end to the rule of President Bashir, who came to power after a coup in 1989. Activists accuse him of mismanaging the economy.

Over the past year, the cost of some goods has more than doubled, while the Sudanese pound has plunged in value.

Read: Sudan fresh protests planned as Bashir sacks health minister

Three-quarters of Sudan’s oil income was lost after the country’s southern half voted to secede in 2011, leading to the formation of South Sudan.

Its economy has also been strained by over 20 years of US sanctions, which were lifted in October 2017. The US had introduced economic sanctions after accusing Sudan of sponsoring terrorist groups.

Mr Bashir’s regime has been accused of widespread human rights abuses.

In 2009 and 2010, the International Criminal Court (ICC) charged him with several counts of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity, and a warrant was issued for his arrest.

  • Republican Steve King in white supremacy furore

A right-wing Republican congressman is under fire from his own party after questioning why terms like “white supremacy” are controversial.

Steve King of Iowa also pondered in a New York Times interview when labels like “white nationalists” became offensive.

Fellow Republican Jeb Bush said condemnation was not enough, and called for party grandees to oust Mr King.

Mr King has since defended his remarks, saying they were mischaracterised.

Speaking on the floor of the House of Representatives on Friday, he said he regretted “the heartburn that has poured forth” as a result of his interview.

“I want to make one thing abundantly clear: I reject those labels and the evil ideology that they define.”

“As I told the New York Times, it’s not about race, it’s never been about race,” he continued.

“Under any fair political definition, I am simply a nationalist.”

But other Republicans were unconvinced by Mr King’s explanation.

“Republican leaders must actively support a worthy primary opponent to defeat King, because he won’t have the decency to resign,” Mr Bush, a former Florida governor and one-time presidential hopeful, tweeted.

In an opinion piece for the Washington Post, Republican Senator Tim Scott, who is African American, criticised both Mr King and the party’s response.

“Some in our party wonder why Republicans are constantly accused of racism – it is because of our silence when things like this are said,” he wrote.

Steve Scalise, the Republican whip in the House of Representatives, told reporters it was “offensive to try to legitimise those terms”.

House Republican Conference Chair Liz Cheney called the language “abhorrent and racist”.

The Republican backlash follows a tepid reaction from National Republican Congressional Committee chairman Tom Emmer.

The Minnesota representative told the Hill it is too soon to decide whether Mr King would have the committee’s support in his re-election bid.

He later added that he disagreed with Mr King’s statements “as they’ve been characterised”.

In his interview with the New York Times, Mr King was quoted as saying: “White nationalists, white supremacists, western civilization – how did that language become offensive?

“Why did I sit in classes teaching me about the merits of our history and our civilization?”

The congressman, who has served for 16 years, reclaimed his seat in November narrowly, with just three percentage points separating him from his Democratic challenger.

This is far from the first time Mr King has sparked racial controversy.

Last year, he saw his victory margin diminish after making headlines for reportedly supporting a Toronto mayoral candidate with neo-Nazi ties.

In 2017, he claimed diversity was not America’s strength.

He also said: “We can’t restore our civilization with somebody else’s babies.”

  • Kotoko, other leading African clubs long for CAF title

A number of popular African clubs who have not won a continental competition for a long time will be in CAF Confederation Cup play-offs first-leg action this weekend.

It is 42 years since Nigerians Enugu Rangers won the now defunct African Cup Winners Cup and Ghanaians Asante Kotoko lifted the African Cup of Champions Clubs trophy 36 years ago.

Kenyans Gor Mahia and South Africans Kaizer Chiefs raised the African Cup Winners Cup 32 and 18 years ago respectively.

Read: PHOTOS: Asante Kotoko set to travel to Cameroon ahead of Coton Sport CAF Confederation Cup showdown

Egyptians Zamalek can boast of nine CAF titles, but their last success was in 2003 when they won the CAF Super Cup.

AFP Sport assesses the chances of the five former CAF trophy-holders in the two-leg play-offs with group-stage places up for grabs.

    Asante Kotoko

Kotoko, who have the unwanted CAF record of losing seven of nine finals, struggled to get past Kenyans Kariobangi Sharks after receiving a preliminary round walkover.

They now face the 2008 Champions League runners-up, Cameroonians Coton Sport, with the first leg in Yaounde.

Read: CAF Confederation Cup: We will eliminate Kotoko – Coton Sport de Garoua Coach

Coton are likely to prove stronger opponents than Sharks and Kotoko will do well to leave central Africa level on aggregate.

    Enugu Rangers

The draw favoured Rangers as they were paired with Lesotho outfit Bantu FC, one of the weakest of the 30 title contenders playing this weekend.

Bantu were demoted from the Champions League to the Confederation Cup without winning any of their four matches and it is hard to imagine them shocking the Nigerians, at home or away.

Read: Kotoko forced to abandon Dr. Kyei’s commercial aircraft for Cameroon trip

In Godwin Aguda and Bright Silas, Enugu have attackers who scored three goals each to help eliminate Ethiopians Defence Force and Algerians USM Bel Abbes in qualifiers.

    Gor Mahia

The Nairobi club have been steadily improving in Africa, becoming the first Kenyan qualifiers for the Confederation Cup group stage last year.

Gor almost achieved an even greater success in the current Champions League, but conceded a late goal away to Nigerians Lobi Stars and missed out on a group place.

They host Cameroonians New Star, whose five-goal striker Junior Ngongang is the leading scorer in this Confederation Cup.

    Orlando Chiefs

Chiefs, who have won 53 domestic trophies since being formed 49 years ago but only one in Africa, will lack injured goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune away to Zambians Zesco United.

His absence was sorely felt last weekend with a blunder by Namibian stand-in Virgil Vries gifting an undeserved victory to Mamelodi Sundowns in a key league match.

Zesco sharpshooter Lazarous Kambole, whose five-minute hat-trick last season was the fastest in a CAF club match, poses a major threat to the Soweto outfit.

    Zamalek

After several seasons in the doldrums and being overshadowed by arch rivals Al Ahly, the Cairo White Knights are leading the Egyptian title race under Swiss coach Christian Gross.

They took this good form into Africa last month to slam seven goals past Chadians ASCOT in the home leg of a qualifier with Congolese Kabongo Kasongo bagging a brace.

Away to Moroccans Ittihad Tanger this weekend, Zamalek will probably be satisfied to avoid defeat, then use home advantage to emerge overall winners.

  • Haley, Ivanka Trump among possible World Bank nominees – Report

Former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley and US President Donald Trump’s daughter and adviser Ivanka are among possible US candidates to replace outgoing World Bank President Jim Yong Kim, The Financial Times reported Friday.

Kim abruptly announced Monday he was cutting short his tenure as the bank’s president more than three years before his second term was due to end.

Read: Ivanka Trump used personal email for White House business

In addition to Trump and Haley, who stepped down as US Ambassador to the United Nations last month, other names being floated include Treasury Undersecretary for International Affairs David Malpass and Mark Green, head of the US Agency for International Development, the newspaper reported.

Ivanka Trump in 2017 was the driving force behind a $1 billion, Saudi-supported World Bank fund to promote entrepreneurship by women.

The Treasury Department told AFP on Friday that it had no comment in potential candidates.

The department has received a “significant number of recommendations,” a spokesperson said.

“We are beginning the internal review process for a US nominee. We look forward to working with the governors to select a new leader.”

Under an unwritten agreement, the United States, which is the bank’s largest shareholder, has always chosen its leader since the institution was founded following World War II.

But the success of a US candidate no longer appears completely assured.

Kim was the first American nominee to face a contested election for the World Bank presidency in 2012 and the bank’s board has said its selection process will be “open, merit-based and transparent,” implying non-US candidates would not be ruled out.

The World Bank Board said Thursday it would start accepting nominations for a new leader early next month and name a replacement for Kim by mid-April.

According to Professor Alyn Morice, head of cardiovascular and respiratory studies at the University of Hull and founding member of the International Society for the Study of Cough says, “chocolate can calm coughs”.

Read: How to cut back on drinking alcohol

The doctor even added that the supporting evidence is “actually as solid as a bar of Fruit and Nut”. It’s the perfect excuse.

Writing for MailOnline, Alyn, who has spent years researching the cough, said researchers have just seen the results of a recent study of over-the-counter medicine.

“This proves that a new medicine which contains cocoa is better than a standard linctus.”

    Medicine
Medicine containing chocolate could be the answer, according to Prof Alyn Morice

The study of 163 people revealed that the patients taking chocolate-based medicine saw significant improvements in two days.

So it’s not quite as good as simply munching on some Maltesers and feeling better, unfortunatley.

Nevertheless, this isn’t the first study that suggests chocolate can calm coughs.

Researchers at Imperial College in London found that theobromine, an alkaloid in cocoa, is better at suppressing the urge to cough than codeine – and ingredient often used in cough medicines.

So how can chocolate actually help with a cough?

Well according to Professor Alyn Morice, it’s down to chocolate’s “demulcent properties” – in other words, it’s sticky which means it forms a coating on the throat’s nerve endings, suppressing the urge to cough.

“This demulcent effect explains why honey and lemon and other sugary syrups can help, but I think there is something more going on with chocolate,” Alyn added.

The cough expert reckons sucking on a piece of chocolate could provide some relief, but it’s best when working with other ingredients in the medicine.

    It’s definitely worth a try though…

  • Callum Hudson-Odoi: Chelsea boss criticises Bayern Munich conduct

Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri has criticised Bayern Munich after they went on the record about wanting to sign Blues winger Callum Hudson-Odoi.

Bayern have bid £35m for the 18-year-old and their sporting director, Hasan Salihamidzic, has said the German club “really want to sign him”.

Hudson-Odoi has 18 months left on his Chelsea deal.

“It’s not professional, because they are talking about a player under contract with Chelsea,” said Sarri.

“So they didn’t respect our club, I think.”

Chelsea have offered Hudson-Odoi a new deal and Sarri, who said he wants to sign two players in January, reiterated that he wants the teenager to stay at Stamford Bridge.

“We are very happy with the player because he is improving,” said the Chelsea manager.

“He is improving a lot I think in the defensive phase. Now, he needs to improve in some movements without the ball.

“He is working very well and I’d like to have him in the future.”

Hudson-Odoi, who made his first-team debut in the FA Cup in January last year, made a second successive start in the Carabao Cup first-leg defeat by Tottenham.

He provided assists for two goals in the FA Cup third-round win over Nottingham Forest.

But the FA Youth Cup and Under-17 World Cup winner is yet to start a Premier League game at Chelsea and has made only one top-flight appearance this season.

If the teenager moves to Bayern, he will become the third English teenager currently in the Bundesliga – alongside Jadon Sancho, 18, who left Manchester City for Borussia Dortmund in 2017, and Reiss Nelson, 19, on loan from Arsenal at Hoffenheim until July.

Eden Hazard, Willian and Pedro are all regulars in Chelsea’s starting line-up ahead of Hudson-Odoi, but Sarri recently said he was starting “to consider him at the same level”.

He is set to face more competition next season at Stamford Bridge with the £58m arrival of United States winger Christian Pulisic from Borussia Dortmund.

  • Ofori-Atta’s DataBank now into gold collectibles like Menzgold – Otokunor

Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress, Peter Otokunor has hinted that government’s ‘poor’ handling of the Menzgold saga is deliberate to give Finance Minister’s investment company an undue advantage in that space.

In his assessment of the situation, the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta’s quest to safeguard his business interests particularly of his investment institution, Data Bank, has significantly contributed to the actions and inactions of government.

Peter Boamah Otokunor believes it is a deliberate action to ‘kill’ competition against the businesses as it is a part of a grand scheme by the government.

He accused the Finance Minister and government of engaging in a political game to take over the financial sector of the country.

“It is deliberate, it is conscious, it is an economic turf war. The Finance Minister has Banks, he has investment companies. He is collapsing investment companies. The issue of Menzgold has come to the fore and how we think that the government, the approach they used to deal with the issue has not been the right approach because the Finance Minister is also running an investment company that is now dealing in gold collectables. So that tells you that there is an economic turf war. Somebody wants to control the economic breathing line of the country and that is problematic. You don’t do that as a politician, you don’t do that as a government. When you do that you crash the entire financial sector” the Deputy General Secretary detailed.

Read: uniBank, GN, UT, Heritage banks killed to pave way for Databank, Enterprise Group Adongo

“Now Data bank is dealing in gold collectables which Menzgold was dealing in. How did they acquire their licence? Perhaps maybe when they identified that Menzgold was not having their licence, couldn’t they have arranged and regularised Menzgold operations. If it is illegal or legal” he questioned insisting that government could have done more to salvage the situation.

BoG, government in a political turf war with Banks

Explaining what he meant by the Government is engaging in a political turf war in the financial sector, Peter Otokunor accused the Bank of Ghana and the Finance Minister of going after institutions that are in one way or another affiliated to an opposition political figure.

He buttressed his argument by citing the revocation of the banking license of Heritage Bank, a wholly Ghanaian bank.

In his opinion, the grounds for their closure and absorption into Consolidated Bank of Ghana isn’t potent and reasonable enough to warrant such an action as the bank met the Minimum Capital Requirement of GHC400 million, developed an acceptable governing culture.

He, therefore, described as unfair the basis for the revocation of their license and noted that it speaks to the political bias of the Central Bank.
    disagrees with heritage bank closure

To this end, the NDC Deputy General Secretary asserted that the Central Bank was doing something wrong and improper and tasked them to focus on their core mandate.

“You don’t commend the BoG because they are closing banks because they have gotten some license based on false pretence. You ask yourself, what constitutes false pretence? Now we have seen many of the banks already in court complaining that no, this is not fair and that perhaps it is political witch-hunting because perhaps some political heads are behind those banks. It is economic warfare, it is an economic turf war that is going on. It is not regulation” he emphasised.

Ghana doesn’t know what it takes to regulate the financial sector

The Deputy NDC General Secretary alleged that the seeming crisis and negative growth in the sector should be solely blamed on the BoG.

He claimed there is nothing to clean as the sector was growing at more than 20% in 2016 but now growing at -13% despite the cleaning by the regulator.

Peter Otokunor questioned the thinking behind increasing the minimum capital at a time when the government was heavily owing the banks with their figure believed to be more than 40% of the debts.

Read: Heritage Bank Saga: BoG politics ‘sad’, ‘disturbing’ Adongo

The Financial Sector according to Peter Otokunor has virtually collapsed because of the mismanagement of the government and their attempt to hijack the system to favour their interests and businesses.

“Under the NPP government the financial sector has virtually collapsed. In fact, it is growing at -13.1% and whiles in 2016 the financial sector was growing at 22.3%. It is not because of the cleanup. The clean up just started and what do you even call the cleanup? The clean up has been more of a political exercise than a regulatory exercise and you and I will bear witness to that. It has been a political exercise. There is nothing to clean. Indeed, this Bank of Ghana administration appears not to know what really it takes to regulate the financial sector and that is why the financial sector is in crisis.” He asserted.

The Deputy General Secretary lashed out, “you don’t extend an increase in your capital requirement from GHC120 million to GHC400 million when you know that government owes about 45% of its debt to these banks and we would need to pay. We owe about 170 billion Cedis and 45% of it is owed to these local banks so, in such a crucial time when the government is in distress and you are unable to redeem credit, you are unable to pay your debts to the local banks you do not increase your minimum capital requirement by over 200 to 300%. You will weaken the banks, they will not be able to make it and make money available.”

The NDC Deputy General Secretary made these comments in an interview with www.ghaanweb.com at the Party’s head office in Accra.

He was responding to a report on the findings made by the Political Science Department of the University of Ghana which hinted that President AKufo-Addo would most likely be re-elected into office after his first two years performance in government should the nation go to the polls.

Respondents were, however, not impressed with the inability of the government to implement most of their key promises they pledged in the lead up to the 2016 elections effectively.

  • Ex-Nissan chair faces two new charges

Prosecutors in Japan have indicted former Nissan chairman Carlos Ghosn with two fresh charges involving financial crimes.

Mr Ghosn, who has been detained since November, was charged with aggravated breach of trust and understating his income.

He had already been indicted on a separate charge of underreporting his pay over five years.

Mr Ghosn, whose detention has drawn some criticism, denies all wrongdoing.

His lawyers said they would apply for bail, but experts say this request is very unlikely to be granted.

The new charges will likely keep the 64-year-old in prison until his first trial, according to his lawyers.

What has he been charged with?

Mr Ghosn was first charged last year with underreporting his pay package for the five years to 2015.

On Friday, a fresh charge claimed he understated his compensation for another three years.

He was also indicted on a new, more serious charge of breach of trust.

Mr Ghosn, the architect of the Renault-Nissan alliance, is accused of moving personal investment losses worth 1.85bn yen (£13.4m; $17m) racked up on foreign exchange dealings to Nissan.

Carlos Ghosn, CEO of Nissan attends the media preview ahead of The 44th Tokyo Motor Show 2015 at Tokyo Big Sight on October 28, 2015 in Tokyo, Japan.

Mr Ghosn is also accused of making $14.7m in payments to Saudi businessman Khaled al-Juffali, using Nissan funds in exchange for arranging a letter of credit to help with his investment losses.

He was first detained on 19 November and rearrested twice in December.

If found guilty of the financial misconduct charges, Mr Ghosn faces up to 10 years in prison as well as a fine of up to 700m yen, according to Japanese regulators.

    Renault audit finds ‘no fraud’

Following his arrest, Nissan and Mitsubishi removed Mr Ghosn as chairman. Renault has kept him on as chair, saying it has not yet found any evidence of wrongdoing.

On Thursday, the board of the French firm said an investigation into executive pay had so far shown no signs of fraud.

“The review process has examined the compensation of the current Groupe Renault Executive Committee members for the financial years 2017 and 2018 and has concluded that it is both in compliance with applicable laws and free from any fraud,” it said in a statement.

It said the review process “will continue with respect to previous financial years”.

    Who is Carlos Ghosn?

  • Sanders apologises for 2016 campaign ‘harassment’ allegations

Senator Bernie Sanders has apologised to female staff members on his 2016 US presidential campaign who allege they were harassed by a male aide.

“To women in our campaign who were harassed or mistreated, I apologise,” the Vermont independent wrote in a statement on Twitter on Thursday.

His apology comes as he contemplates another White House bid under the Democratic banner in 2020.

Several aides have complained of a “predatory culture” in his campaign.

What is the background? The New York Times reported on allegations by female Sanders aides of mistreatment by male senior staff.

On Wednesday, Politico reported that the deputy national field director for Mr Sanders’ campaign had forcibly kissed a younger subordinate in 2016.

Read: Trump walks out of shutdown talks with a ‘bye-bye’

“Candidates who allow people like Robert Becker to lead their organisations shouldn’t earn the highest office in our government,” said the woman, naming the aide.

The unnamed accuser said she never reported the alleged incident because it came on the same day that Mr Sanders’ campaign ended after he failed to snatch the Democratic nomination from Hillary Clinton.

She said she felt compelled to speak out after Mr Becker travelled to South Carolina in December on a trip to recruit future campaign workers for Mr Sanders.

Mr Becker denies any harassment, and no criminal charges have been filed.

The allegation comes as dozens of his former Sanders campaign workers have signed a letter requesting a meeting with him “to discuss the issue of sexual violence and harassment on the 2016 campaign”.

    What did Sanders say?

Mr Sanders’ Twitter apology comes after he said sorry on CNN last week “to any woman who felt that she was not treated appropriately”.

He was criticised for saying he was “a little bit busy running around the country, trying to make the case” for his presidency, and was not aware of the allegations.

Claims of sexual harassment have recently dogged the campaign of Democratic Senator Kamala Harris, who may also enter the White House race.

Senator Harris has said she was “unaware” that a top aide paid a settlement of $400,000 (£314,000) in May 2017 to a woman who sued for sexual harassment.

The California senator’s biography, which debuted last week, contains praise for the aide, who resigned after the payout was revealed.

  • Myanmar court rejects appeal by jailed Reuters journalists

A court in Myanmar has rejected an appeal by two Reuters news agency reporters sentenced to seven years in jail for breaking the country’s Official Secrets Act, in a case that rallied press freedom advocates.

Lawyers for Wa Lone, 32, and Kyaw Soe Oo, 28, had lodged the appeal in November against their conviction, citing evidence of a police set-up and lack of proof of a crime.

But High Court Judge Aung Naing on Friday said the lawyers failed to submit enough evidence to prove the pair’s innocence.

“It was a suitable punishment,” the judge in Yangon said, referring to the seven-year prison term.

Read: Disappeared Saudi couple highlights crackdown on activists

The defence has the option of making a further appeal to the country’s supreme court, based in the capital, Naypyitaw.

“Today’s ruling is yet another injustice among many inflicted upon Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo. They remain behind bars for one reason: those in power sought to silence the truth,” Stephen J. Adler, Reuters Editor-in-Chief, said in a statement.

“Reporting is not a crime, and until Myanmar rights this terrible wrong, the press in Myanmar is not free, and Myanmar’s commitment to rule of law and democracy remains in doubt.”

    Investigation into Rohingya killings

Before their arrest in December 2017, the two journalists had been investigating the killing of 10 Rohingya men and boys by security forces and local Buddhists in western Myanmar’s Rakhine state during an army crackdown that forced more than 700,000 members of the long-persecuted, mostly-Muslim minority to flee to neighbouring Bangladesh.

Read: Rahaf al-Qunun: Saudi woman ‘given refugee status’

In September last year, a Yangon district court sentenced Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo to seven years in prison for illegal possession of official documents, sparking an international outcry from activists and diplomats in a case seen by many as a test of Myanmar’s fledgeling democracy.

The pair were among a group of journalists named by Time magazine as its “Person of the Year”.

Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi said in September 2018 that the reporters’ jailing had nothing to do with freedom of expression. In comments made the week after their conviction, she said they had been sentenced for handling official secrets and “were not jailed because they were journalists”.

  • Police request Ronaldo DNA sample following rape allegation

Police in Las Vegas have issued a warrant for a DNA sample from Cristiano Ronaldo as part of their investigation into the rape allegations made against the Juventus forward.

The 33-year-old’s lawyer, Peter S. Christiansen, told BBC Sport it was a “very standard request”.

The Wall Street Journal says the warrant was recently sent to the court system in Italy.

Ronaldo denies assaulting Kathryn Mayorga at a Las Vegas hotel in 2009.

“Mr Ronaldo has always maintained, as he does today, that what occurred in Las Vegas in 2009 was consensual in nature, so it is not surprising that DNA would be present, nor that the police would make this very standard request as part of their investigation,” said Christiansen’s statement.

German weekly news magazine Der Spiegel, which first published the story about the allegation in October, said Ms Mayorga filed a report with Las Vegas police shortly after the alleged incident.

Der Spiegel said that in 2010, she reportedly reached an out-of-court settlement with Ronaldo involving a $375,000 (£288,000) payment for agreeing never to go public with the allegations.

Her lawyers are now seeking to declare the non-disclosure agreement void.

Ronaldo’s lawyer has previously said his client does not deny entering an agreement but that “the reasons that led him to do so are at least to be distorted”.

He added: “This agreement is by no means a confession of guilt.”

Ms Mayorga was inspired to speak out by the #MeToo movement, her lawyer has said, and is suing Ronaldo in a lawsuit in the United States.

Ronaldo moved to Juventus from Real Madrid for £99.2m in July. He has won the Ballon d’Or – awarded to the world’s best footballer – in 2008, 2013, 2014, 2016 and 2017.

The Portuguese international has previously dismissed the allegation as “fake news” and earlier in October issued a statement through his Twitter account in which he “firmly” denied the accusation.

His lawyers claim documents used in Der Spiegel’s investigation have been “completely fabricated” but the publication says it has “no reason” to doubt the authenticity of key documents used in its story.

  • Suitcase of cash stolen from Mugabe

Three people have appeared in court in Zimbabwe, accused of stealing a suitcase containing $150,000 (£117,600) of cash from the country’s ousted president, Robert Mugabe.

The suspected thieves allegedly spent the money on cars, homes and animals.

A relative of the ex-president, Constantia Mugabe, is among the accused, government-owned media report.

She allegedly had keys to Mr Mugabe’s rural home in Zvimba, near the capital Harare, and gave the others access.

The other suspects were employed as cleaners at the time of the theft, which allegedly happened sometime between 1 December and early January.

“Johanne Mapurisa bought a Toyota Camry… and a house for $20,000 after the incident,” state prosecutor Teveraishe Zinyemba told Chinhoyi magistrates court.

“Saymore Nhetekwa also bought a Honda… and livestock which included pigs and cattle for an undisclosed amount.”

Mr Mugabe, now 94, was forced out of office by Zimbabwe’s military in 2017.

Up to that point, he had been in power for 37 years, first as prime minister and later as president.

Once famously claiming that a country could never go bankrupt, he was accused of enjoying a lavish lifestyle while presiding over Zimbabwe’s economic collapse.

US dollars are highly prized in Zimbabwe. In theory, the local “bond notes” banks dispense are equal to the US currency – but in reality they buy much less.

Since retiring, Mr Mugabe has had difficulty walking and has spent months in Singapore for medical treatment.

It is unclear if he was at home while the theft took place.

  • Dagbon peace process threatened; one dead, three injured in renewed clashes

One person was killed on Thursday following renewed clashes between some Abudus and Andanis at Yendi in the Northern Region.

Three other persons also sustained gunshot wounds.

Both injured victims are said to be receiving treatment at the emergency ward at the Yendi Government Hospital.

Though the situation is under control, the police have requested for re-enforcement so they can continue with the one week funeral of the late Ya-Naa.

The renewed violence comes as the Dagbon township winds down the hard-won funeral rites of the late Ya-Naa Abdulai Yakubu Andani II.

Joy News Northern Region Correspondent, Hashmin Mohammed, reports that police in Yendi fired gunshots to disperse youth pelting stones at chiefs arriving for the funeral of the Yaa- Naa Yakubu Andani slated for Friday.

Reports indicate that despite this intervention by the police, another group of young men moved in to stop the youths pelting the stones, resulting in the clashes.

The clash is said to have happened around 5:30 pm on Thursday when the Chief of Sagnarigu with his entourage of about 20 fleets of bus and truck arrived at Yendi. While driving towards the Gbewaa palace, some youths hurled stones at them smashing windscreens of vehicles.

This left several vehicles entering Yendi or leaving Yendi township with cracked windscreens. This happened at Zohe, a suburb at the outskirts of Yendi in Tamale Yendi Road.

The windscreen of a Police Navara Pick Up No. GP 3840 was also smashed with a stone.

Meanwhile, the Planning committee for the funeral had earlier petitioned the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, demanding that the Boli? Lana, Abdulai Mahamadu, vacates the Mba Dugu Palace as his continues stay presents a major obstacle to the performance of the funeral rites.

That stance seemed to have softened as the funeral on Friday will go ahead as planned.

    Tension

Tensions between the two factions have persisted since 2002 after the murder of the late Ya-Na Yakubu Andani and some of his elders triggered bitter clashes.

The clashes were triggered in part by a disagreement over who was the rightful heir to the throne.

The then NPP government under ex-president John Kufuor constituted the Wuako Commission to investigate the circumstances that led to the clashes and the casualties.

The Commission after its sitting recommended the prosecution of some two personsYidana Sugri and Iddrisu Gyamfo, who were seen on 27th March, 2002 holding severed parts of the late Ya-Na, Yakubu Andani II, soon after his killing.

The Commission also recommended that government must take steps to find a lasting peace between the people of Dagbon.

The two suspects were sent to court but were acquitted and discharged for lack of evidence.

In line with the recommendation by the Wuako Commission the then president John Kufuor also instituted the Committee of Eminent chiefs to mediate between the two feuding factions and to provide a roadmap for peace.

The major point of disagreement has been who and when to organize the funerals of the late Ya-Nas belonging to both factions.
