  • Lion King 2019: First teaser trailer released for new film

The first teaser trailer for Disney’s live-action remake of The Lion King has been released.

Set to come out next summer, the film has huge names attached to it including Beyonce, Donald Glover, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Seth Rogan.

In the trailer we see the familiar opening moments of the story, where Rafiki presents a young Simba to the animals of the Pride Lands.

It was aired during NFL’s traditional Thanksgiving primetime game in the US.

Fans of the original film were pleased to hear the trailer narrated by James Earl Jones, who plays king Mufasa in both the 1994 original and next year’s film.

Here’s a hit of nostalgia for you:

    https://youtu.be/4CbLXeGSDxg

The trailer suggests the new film is following the original story – although with Simba looking so clear in the trailer, some people are worried about what that means for his dad…

It’s directed by Jon Favreau, who was behind the successful live-action remake of The Jungle Book.

Donald Glover will play Simba, Beyonce will play his mum Nala and Chiwetel Ejiofor will play his uncle Scar.

“It is a director’s dream to assemble a talented team like this to bring this classic story to life,” Jon said.

Last year Newsbeat spoke to the cast of London’s Lion King musical about the new film.

And Janique Charles, who plays Nala in the West End, had some advice for Beyonce.

Fan reaction to the new trailer has been largely positive, especially from young Americans who were watching during the football.

The film is set for release in July 2019.

  • NPA to pilot cylinder recirculation model in Kumasi

Deputy Energy Minister, Dr Mohammed Amin Adam, has charged the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), as a matter of urgency, use Kumasi as the first point for the implementation of the Cylinder Recirculation Model.

He said this was as a result of the number of high-risk liquefied petroleum gas stations located in the densely populated Kumasi metropolis after the NPA undertook risk assessment exercise sometime this year.

Per the directive, all high risk stations will be closed down and converted to cylinder distribution points where consumers can go and exchange their empty cylinders for filled ones.

After visiting the victims and the accident scene with the Chief Executive of NPA; Alhassan Tampuli, the Mayor Kumasi Osei Assibey, Dr Amin Adam proposed a task force be formed to ensure smooth implementation of the model in the metropolis.

Read: 400 people to lose their jobs due to cylinder re-circulation program NPA admits

“The KMA has to work with us so we can get outlets that are ready to start the distribution so that we can distribute cylinders throughout those stations”.

Dr Amin assured the general public President Akufo Addo was concerned about explosions at gas stations around the country and “he is convinced that the CRM is the answer to stopping these explosions.

“Not just explosions at gas stations, people are not able to get correct cylinders in their homes and their management of the cylinders in their homes is not good, as a result of that we also have explosions in some homes because of their poor management of the cylinders.

“The NPA has been doing so much education, creating awareness on how people use cylinders and the incidence of explosions in homes have gone down significantly but major explosions at the stations continue to be a worry to us as a government and this is why the President has directed that the CRM be implemented fully” he stressed.

The Deputy Energy Minister urged all Ghanaians to support the government to implement the policy because “when we do that we take away the high-risk stations from residential communities… and that will significantly reduce the incidence of gas explosions.”

He noted that “two lives have been lost and there was a third person in his vehicle across the road who is currently struggling for his life. This is not acceptable to us and this is why we expect Ghanaians to bear with us”.

According to him, the public must bear with the NPA when the decision to shut down high-risk stations in densely populated communities comes into effect, because of the initial discomfort that may create.

He however assured everything will be done to ensure the safety of the public remains paramount to the overall operation of government.

Read: Cylinder recirculation model takes off early 2019

Mr Tampuli on his part said a cylinder bottling plant had been established to aid in the pilot exercise in the region.

He revealed two bottling plants were to be established in the Ashanti to serve the region and that of Brong Ahafo when the Authority begins full implementation of the model.

He disclosed that gas stations stationed in the outskirts of the Kumasi metropolis would be used as an alternative to CRM site, where cylinders will be filled and distributed to high-risk stations in the metropolis for onward distribution to the general public.

“So all the cylinders will be taken there to fill them, so customers will leave their cylinders at a station like this and it will be taken to outskirt stations which is low risk, fill them and consumers will come and pick them from here. Almost mimicking the CRM, pending the full implementation,” the NPA CEO said.

The government has meanwhile promised to pay the medical bills of affected persons currently being treated at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.

Professor Joshua Alabi is such an inspiration; this is a tractor driver and son of a farmer who spent his teenage years working on rice farms.

His father was an illiterate and a mechanic who dedicated his income to get his children educated. His father was not a politician; he was an ordinary citizen breaking his back and working hard to put food on the table for his family. His father believed in the power of education to jump multitudes into very essential roles in our society.

He is now a Professor and a decorated Vice-Chancellor. He has been awarded the marketing man of the year and most influential public sector worker in our country.

Professor Alabi, like Dr. Nkrumah, has no family fame yet he has a dedicated mind and convictions on what this country could achieve for its citizens.

And his running for the President of Ghana must be a source of hope to lots of the Ghanaian people who think that our beloved country has no place for their talents and goals.

  • Khashoggi murder: Calls to remove Saudi crown prince ‘a red line’

Calls to remove Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman are a “red line”, the Saudi foreign minister has told the BBC, amid a global outcry over the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

Adel al-Jubeir said the prince had not been involved in the 2 October killing in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.

This comes a day after the US Congress demanded an investigation into whether the prince had a role in the murder.

President Donald Trump has defended US ties with Saudi Arabia.

In a statement on Tuesday, Mr Trump acknowledged that the crown prince “could very well” have known about Khashoggi’s brutal murder, adding: “Maybe he did and maybe he didn’t!”

What did the Saudi foreign minister say?
Speaking to the BBC’s chief international correspondent Lyse Doucet in Riyadh, Mr al-Jubeir said: “In Saudi Arabia our leadership is a red line. The custodian of the two holy mosques [King Salman] and the Crown Prince (Mohammed bin Salman) are a red line.

“They represent every Saudi citizen and every Saudi citizen represents them. And we will not tolerate any discussion of anything that is disparaging towards our monarch or our crown prince.”

Mr al-Jubeir reiterated that the crown prince had not been involved in the murder.

“We have made that very clear. We have investigations ongoing and we will punish the individuals who are responsible for this,” he said.

It has been widely reported in the US media that the CIA believes the grisly killing could only have happened on the crown prince’s order.

But Mr al-Jubeir disputed those reports, saying the killing was a “rogue operation” by intelligence agents.

And the Saudi minister again urged Turkey to provide all the evidence about the killing and stop leaking information.

He also said any potential US sanctions against Saudi Arabia would be short-sighted.

What about the investigation demand from the US Congress?

On Tuesday, Republican Senator Bob Corker and Democrat Bob Menendez issued a statement on behalf of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

In it they called on Mr Trump to focus a second investigation specifically on the crown prince so as to “determine whether a foreign person is responsible for an extrajudicial killing, torture or other gross violation” of human rights.

he request, issued under the Global Magnitsky Human Rights Accountability Act, requires a response within 120 days.

What did Trump’s earlier statement say?

“The world is a very dangerous place!” Mr Trump said in his statement, before holding up Saudi Arabia as an ally of the US against Iran.

The kingdom spent “billions of dollars in leading the fight against Radical Islamic Terrorism” whereas Iran has “killed many Americans and other innocent people throughout the Middle East”.

It also stressed Saudi investment pledges and arms purchases. “If we foolishly cancel these contracts, Russia and China would be the enormous beneficiaries,” it added.

While admitting the murder of Jamal Khashoggi was “terrible”, Mr Trump wrote that “we may never know all of the facts” about his death.
“The United States intends to remain a steadfast partner of Saudi Arabia to ensure the interests of our country, Israel and all other partners in the region.”

Mr Trump later said he would meet Mohammed bin Salman at a G20 meeting in Argentina next week if the crown prince attended.

  • D&G apologise over Instagram ‘hacks’ amid racism accusations

Dolce & Gabbana has apologised for posts on its Instagram account written in response to its latest ad campaign.

The Italian fashion house said its and co-founder Stefano Gabbana’s accounts were hacked and used to criticise Chinese people.

“We have nothing but respect for China and the people of China,” the apology message read.

The brand is already in hot water over its #DGLovesChina campaign, which has been accused of racism.

Gabbana also apologised, posting a screenshot on Instagram of offensive messages he claims were sent by a hacker abusing his account.

D&G posted three videos this week of a Chinese model eating Italian foods like pizza and pasta with chopsticks.

These videos are available to view on Instagram but were taken down from Chinese social media network Weibo less than 24 hours after they were posted.

According to digital publication Jing Daily, which covers luxury consumer trends in China, the videos made “big mistakes in tone and taste”.

It said the campaign had been criticised for “trivialising China’s centuries-old culture and depicting Chinese women in a stereotypical and even racist way” by users on social media.

The use of split-up chopsticks was also criticised for being improper and disrespectful.

D&G is yet to apologise for the campaign, which was to have been accompanied by a catwalk show in Shanghai on Wednesday that has now been cancelled.

“Boycott Dolce” has also been discussed on Weibo more than 18,000 times, according to Jing Daily.

The website Business of Fashion said the decision to cancel the show had been taken by Chinese authorities.

A number of high-profile Chinese celebrities had announced they would not attend.

“I love my mother country,” actress Li Bingbing told her 42 million fans.

“Our mother country is more important than anything,” said the management of Wang Junkai, a singer in boy band TFBoys, who also withdrew.

Actor Talu Wang wrote on Weibo: “Respect is more important than anything.”

This isn’t the first time the high-end brand has been accused of racism towards China.

Last April they posted a campaign on Weibo that showed impoverished people in run-down areas of Beijing pictured with D&G models ahead of a catwalk show in the city.

The pictures were criticised for stereotyping Chinese history by showing old parts of the city, rather than more modern depictions of Beijing.

D&G also caused controversy in 2016 when it called an item of footwear in its spring/summer collection a “slave sandal”.

The major point of disagreement has been who and when to organize the funerals of the late Ya-Nas belonging to both factions.

On account of this, the factions, have at different times, threatened to opt out of the mediation process involving the panel of eminent chiefs.

It has taken more than 10 years for the mediation process to be over. Presenting the report, the Asantehene and his two compatriots Yagbonwura Tuntumba Bore Essa I, Overlord of the Gonja Traditional Area and Nayiri Naabohagu Mahami Abdulai Sheriga, Overlord of the Mamprugu said their job is not done until a new Ya-Na is enskinned.

    Lucky President?

The Asantehene who spoke on behalf of the Committee described president Akufo-Addo as the luckiest president to be receiving the report of the committee which sat through three different administrations beginning with ex-president Kufuor, Ex-president John Mills and Ex-president John Mahama.

He debunked assertion that the chiefs were put under pressure by the political heads to complete the report, adding he will not allow any interference from the political elites.

In receiving the report, the president Nana Akufo-Addo said: “This will one of the most memorable days of my presidency.”

He said the wisdom of ex-president John Kufuor in setting up the committee has been “vindicated.”

Even though the conflict and the tension dragged on for over 16 years, the president said he never once entertained skepticism even though many had given up hope.

“I have an unshakeable belief in Ghanaians to resolve their grievances,” he stated, adding, the roadmap is great and will bring peace.

“To the three eminent chiefs who have worked for so long, I commend your tenacity.”

“Even when times the situation was hopeless you were still committed to the seemingly intractable conflict”

The president made a passionate appeal to the people of Dagbon to give peace and development a chance, saying the youth are tired of the age-old conflict.

According to him, the people of Dagbon have the best opportunity to mend fences and accommodate one another even if they disagree.

Reiterating his neutrality in the 16-year-old conflict, the president stated “I am not a Dagomba and can neither be an Abudu nor Andani. All I want to see is peace.”

  • Interpol presidency vote: Russia in surprise loss to South Korea

Interpol has elected South Korean Kim Jong-yang as its president, rejecting the Russian frontrunner who had been accused of abusing the international police body’s arrest warrant system.

Mr Kim was chosen by Interpol’s 194 member states at a meeting of its annual congress in Dubai.

He beat Russia’s Alexander Prokopchuk, who had been widely tipped to win.

But there was growing concern that Mr Prokopchuk would use the role to target critics of Russia’s President Putin.

The election follows the disappearance of Interpol’s former president Meng Hongwei, who vanished on a trip to China in September. Beijing has since confirmed he has been detained and is being investigated for allegedly taking bribes.

Mr Kim, who had been serving as acting president, will serve out the remaining two years of Mr Meng’s term.

    Why was Mr Prokopchuk controversial?

Mr Prokopchuk is a veteran of Russia’s interior ministry.

While he was Interpol’s Moscow bureau chief, he was accused of abusing the so-called red notice system – international arrest warrants – to target critics of the Kremlin.

There had been growing fears among Russian human rights groups and officials from other countries, including the US and the UK, that Moscow would use his position to target its political opponents.

One group of US senators said electing him would be “akin to putting a fox in charge of the henhouse”, while a prominent Kremlin critic said it would be like “putting the mafia in charge”.

Lithuania, which regained its independence from Russia during the collapse of the Soviet Union and is now a member of both Nato and the EU, had threatened to leave Interpol if Mr Prokopchuk was elected.
