Mr. Agyapong in the wake of the Number 12 documentary, which exposed massive corruption at the Ghana Football Association leading to the resignation of GFA President Kwasi Nyantakyi, attacked Anas on several occasions calling him a fraud and a criminal person.

He further released some pictures he claimed were that of the investigative journalist.

But in an interview on Oman FM, the NPP firebrand added that he will not seek a re-election due to how the NPP is embarrassing him after he was used to destroy Anas and the Tiger Eye PI firm.

“After mounting a spirited defense for the party against undercover journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas, I was disgraced in parliament like a child,” the fuming Assin Central lawmaker said.

He added: “Look at how the party is using me and eventually will disgrace me. I have had enough and I am quitting, I am telling you in plain words. Before the Anas video came out, those who had the chance to preview it were alarmed and knew it will put the party in a bad light. They sent emissaries to my house at dawn to go and defend the party; thereafter they disgraced me in parliament.

“Anybody who is at the NPP headquarters lobbying to be a Minister if I am not an MP he cannot run me down. Nobody can also come and ask me to leave my house at 7am and go to defend the party on radio or television. Politics is not the only means through which one can make it. I am tired of NPP and the embarrassments.”

“I have decided not to contest again because of NPP and their conduct. The way they are using me and making me to face all sorts of embarrassment I do not think I can continue. You can record and go and play to them. Where I have lived my life up to and they are treating me, I am calling it quits,” Mr. Agyapong stated.

  • Stop wasting money on useless events; prioritize students safety – UPSA Parliament tells SRC

The University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) Students Parliament has urged the Students Representative Council (SRC) of the institution to prioritize the welfare of students and desist from wasting money on insignificant events.

According to the UPSA Parliament, the SRC has neglected its commitment to seek the interest of students as enshrined in the Constitution of the University.

In a statement, the Students Parliament bemoaned the dangers students are facing in the absence of streetlights from Campus to the UPSA Hostel due to the “irresponsibility” and unfulfilled promise by the SRC President Terrick Nii Obodai Torgbor.

They disclose that criminals are taking advantage of the darkness to rob students and some are stabbed in the event of the attacks.

“In spite of all this, the SRC has shown no interest to seek to promote safeguarding students to prevent these unforeseen circumstances along this stretch. Rather, they spent and budgeted whooping amount of money on fun activities such as Akwaaba week celebration, the upcoming face of UPSA, SRC week and the likes,” the House alleged.

They reminded the SRC President of his campaign promises saying, “H.E. Terrick Nii Obodai Torgbor, the Progressive agenda must be seen no worn ever. I will like to remind you of the twenty (20) progressive policies campaign message where electrification of streetlights was part. Is safety a choice you make or a priority?”

Read details of the statement below

PROVISION OF STREETLIGHTS A PRIORITY OF UPSA-SRC OR NOT

The students Parliament House of the University of Professional studies on Monday, 4th March 2019 held the second sitting of the second session of the 7th Parliament to deliberate on “Provision of street lights from Campus to UPSA Hostel to promote students safety is a priority for SRC or not?

This motion that sought to unravel the interest of the Students Representative Council (SRC) in dealing with the welfare and security of students both on campus and around was debate objectively. Both caucuses (majority and minority) passionately delved into the intricacies of the motion and has revealed the wanton destruction and anarchy of the absence of streetlights on that stretch through to UGBS is causing students of our dear institution being robbed, stabbed and displaced of their possessions.

Inspite of all this, the SRC has shown no interest to seek to promote safeguarding students to prevent these unforeseen circumstances along this stretch. Rather, they spent and budgeted whooping amount of money on fun activities such as Akwaaba week celebration, the upcoming face of UPSA, SRC week and the likes.

The Students Parliament House believes students safety should be the utmost priority of the SRC as stipulated in the SRC constitution Article 2 clause 1 (a) “seeking the interest and welfare of the students in the university”.

It is of these reasons the students Parliament House has much interest to bring to the notice of the SRC executives to uphold students safety with pride and priority to help safeguard the lives of the very people who elected them into office.

H.E. Terrick Nii Obodai Torgbor, the Progressive agenda must be seen no worn ever. I will like to remind you of the twenty (20) progressive policies campaign message where electrification of streetlights was part. Is safety a choice you make or a priority?

Also, the physical assault of a police officer at Weija by a commercial bus driver and his conductor.

According to the Bureau of Public Safety, such incidents are indicative of an institutional failure and a lack of trusted systems that allow the public to lodge complaints about the conduct of police officers.

These “incidents are symptomatic of a grave institutional failure and lack of systems that will offer civil hearing, in a trusted environment with assurance of confidence that will provide trust for a need to lodge complaints, and hope to receive fair hearing.”

It added that the police must at all times be responsive to the needs and expectations of the public and use their authority to act in the interest of the public.

“Public trust and confidence in the police are prerequisites for effective policing. Without this trust the public will not be willing to cooperate with the police in the discharge of their duty and may continue to physically challenge their authority to enforce the law thereby compromising public tranquility and undermining our democratic experiment,” the Bureau of Public added in the statement.

The minister-designate for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Hon. Barbara Oteng Gyasi during her vetting with the Appointment Committee on Friday, March 15, 2019, admitted her awareness of the agitation in the creative industry because of the feeling of being neglected.

This she explained was due to the attention given more to Tourism at the neglect of the Creative Arts because the ministry was initially a Tourism Ministry and the Creative Arts was a later addition.

Read: Barbara Oteng-Gyasi cuts sod for gari and palm oil processing factory at Huni-valley

“Since my nomination, I have also become aware of the dissatisfaction of the creative arts industry. I believe they feel a bit neglected because the ministry started off as the Ministry of Tourism and later on, the creative arts was brought under the umbrella of the ministry and I think for years, the focus has been on tourism and for that reason, creative arts sector feels neglected,” she explained.

The Minister Designate, Barbara Oteng Gyasi promised she is going to pay great attention to the Arts Sector and will treat them as her baby which needs all the attention to grow and thrive.

“As I come in, I am going to pay great attention to the Creative Arts sector. I will see them as my baby because they have come in later and therefore, they deserve the attention to thrive. When I assume office, I will engage them and get to know all the issues of concern and together strategize and support the sector so that they can also generate revenue for the country,” she said.

“So the Creative Arts sector should be assured of my commitment and my support to drive the sector that will deliver,” she added.

The minister-designate further revealed the unavailability of technical personnel in the ministry dedicated solely to the Creative Arts. In view of that, she promised to establish a Technical Directorate to supervise the activities and programs of the Creative Arts sector.

  • Electoral structures robust to implement ROPAA – EC Deputy Chair

The Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC) in charge of Corporate Services, Dr Eric Bossman Asare, has allayed the fears of Ghanaians and said the country’s electoral structures are so robust that the implementation of the Representation of the People Amendment Act (ROPAA) will not be an issue.

He acknowledged that although every new system had its own teething problems, the level of commitment currently being exhibited by the EC would enable it to surmount challenges that might come with the ROPAA implementation.

Read: NDC kicks against piloting of ROPAA in 2020 election

Addressing stakeholders in Bolgatanga on Thursday to collate views on the implementation of the ROPAA, Dr Asare intimated that the EC was currently going round the country to ensure that a lot of consultations were done to enhance the implementation of the ROPAA.

    Implementing ROPAA

He explained that there was no way the EC would relax in implementing the ROPAA because that would amount to contempt of court and a disregard for the law.

According to him, the EC was expected to start implementing the ROPAA within this year in accordance with a court ruling.

A member of the subcommittee on ROPAA representing the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr Benjamin Kunbuor, observed that all political parties needed to trust in the structures and that when it came to choosing people from the various embassies to lead a certain process along the line, all the parties must be able to support those people else the ROPAA agenda could not move forward.

Read: EC sued for contempt over ROPAA

Dr Kunbuor, who is also the Member of Parliament for Nandom, further intimated that issues of suspicion among political parties, especially the New Patriotic Party(NPP) and the NDC, must be avoided.

    Participants

Participants in the meeting raised various concerns including whether or not the Electoral Commission had the financial muscle to conduct the ROPAA vis-a-vis conducting other elections in the country.

Some of them were of the view that the success or otherwise of the ROPAA implementation would, to some extent, depend on the extent of trust Ghanaians had in the system.

Some representatives of the Convention People’s Party entreated the EC to bring on board all other political parties and to avoid focusing on only the NDC and the ruling NPP.

Read: EC to enforce ROPAA in 2020; roadmap committee soon

They explained that the move would enable the EC to avoid unnecessary controversies and tensions that were allegedly brought about by the two giant political parties.

In appointing registration and election officials in accordance with section 1(2) of the Representation of the People (Amendment) Act 699 of 2006, the participants appealed to the EC to be circumspect in order not to appoint people from the various embassies who might have sympathies with a particular political party or parties.

  • Violence is not the path for resolving conflict, Government tells feuding Chereponi factions

Government has told feuding factions in Chereponi that violence is not the path for resolving any challenges in the society.

This follows renewed clashes between the Konkombas and Chokosis in the Chereponi District of the North East Region over the weekend.

Mr Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah, the Information Minister, addressing journalists at a media encounter in Accra on Sunday, said security personnel have been deployed to the area to prevent the further escalation of violence.

He said after peace and order has been restored to the area efforts would be made to understand the underlining factors and resolve it once and for all.

The Minister said when people resort to violence in resolving their differences the law of the country must take its course.

He said government would study the report presented by the Committee, which was tasked to investigate the root cause of violence in Chereponi and implement its recommendations to ensure sustained peace and harmony in the area.

So far, two people have been reported dead, while seven houses have been burnt down with some residents fleeing the area.

Last year, a fight erupted between the Chokosis and Konkombas over a piece of land in the Chereponi District resulting in some casualties.

Commenting on the attack on three Ghanaian Times journalists by some policemen, Mr Oppong-Nkrumah said the assault should be condemned by all.

He said he had had discussions with the Editor of the Ghanaian Times Newspaper and asked the Editor to write to the Ministry so that efforts would be made to speed up investigation into the matter for the necessary disciplinary sanctions to be taken against the culprits.

Mr Oppong-Nkrumah also condemned a viral video circulating on the social media showing a police officer being attacked by a commercial driver and his conductor.

He said assaulting a police officer has various consequences and expressed the hope that the Police Administration would investigate the matter and bring the perpetrators to book.

He urged the Police Administration to expedite action on the two incidents.

  • Angry Legon students ‘chase’ Shatta Wale off stage during Legon Hall artiste night

Controversial Dancehall musician Shatta Wale has reportedly been made to walk off the stage at an event held at the University of Ghana, Legon.

His action was as a result of the students protesting against his performance on the stage. This was gathered by YEN.com.gh in a report sighted on Ghanaweb.com.

Shatta Wale was the headline artiste for the 2019 Legon Hall Week Artiste night, but to the student, his performance on the night was not what they had bargained for.

He was said to be lip-syncing on stage when the students had expected him to perform live as agreed by both team.

However, Shatta Wale failed to do so, making the students so angry because they felt he did not respect them enough to honour his part of the agreement.

The angry students were said to have had some quarrels with his bodyguards, while others put off the light causing Shatta Wale to walk off the stage, bringing the show to a sudden end.

By walking off the stage, Shatta Wale did the wisest thing because it was possible that he could be harmed by the aggrieved students who had already managed to plunge the whole venue into darkness.

  • Growing police-civilian mistrust threat to public tranquility – BPS

The Bureau of Public Safety is concerned about the fractured relationship between police and the civilian population.

According to the group, the disturbing trend of mutual disrespect for rights and freedoms and the lack of trust between civil society and the police, could completely grind law and order to a halt, if not urgently addressed.

A statement signed by the Executive Director, Nana Yaw Akwada, highlighted three separate incidents involving clashes between the police and some civilians last week, which were also widely reported by the media.

    The incidents

On Thursday, a group of about 10 police officers assaulted three journalists working with the Ghanaian Times newspaper after they attempted to film an officer who had committed a traffic offence and hit their vehicle.

Later, a video circulated on social media of Assin North MP, Kennedy Agyapong attacking Central Regional Police Commander on the premises of the University of Education, Winneba in the Central Region.

Then on Saturday, another video emerged in which a driver and his mate were captured engaging in an open bout with a police officer at Weija in Accra after he tried to arrest the driver of the commercial bus over a traffic offence.

“The aforementioned incidents are symptomatic of grave institutional failure and lack of systems that will offer civil hearing, in a trusted environment with an assurance of confidence that will provide trust for a need to lodge complaints, and hope to receive a fair hearing,” the statement noted.

    Immediate action

While reiterating calls for punitive action against the errant officers as well as Mr. Agyapong and the driver and his mate, the statement also urged the Police administration to let its officers appreciate that “…it is not an offence for anyone to record them in public space in so far as that action does not inhibit or interfere with the discharge of their lawful duties.”

“…we cannot overemphasise the need to re-orient the entire police service members to reconcile and firm their psyche to the tenets of democratic policing and on the delivery of service rather than exacting force on the citizenry whose fundamental rights and freedoms are to be protected by the police,” it added.

The Bureau of Public Safety acknowledged that public trust and confidence in the police are prerequisites for effective policing.

“Without this trust, the public will not be willing to cooperate with the police in the discharge of their duty and may continue to physically challenge their authority to enforce the law thereby compromising public tranquillity and undermining our democratic experiment.”

  • Ethiopian Airlines: ‘Clear similarities’ with Indonesia crash

Flight data from the Ethiopian Airlines disaster a week ago suggest “clear similarities” with a crash off Indonesia last October, Ethiopia’s transport minister has said.

Both planes were Boeing 737 Max 8 aircraft.

Last Sunday the Ethiopian Airlines jet crashed after take-off from Addis Ababa, killing all 157 people on board.

Transport Minister Dagmawit Moges told journalists that a preliminary report would be released within 30 days.

Read: Ethiopian Airlines: Ground all Boeing 737 Max 8 jets, says CEO

“Clear similarities were noted between Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 and Indonesian Lion Air Flight 610, which would be the subject of further study during the investigation,” Ms Dagmawit told journalists on Sunday.

In both cases, flight tracking data showed the aircraft’s altitude had fluctuated sharply, as the planes seemed to experience erratic climbs and descents.

Boeing Chairman and CEO Dennis Muilenburg later reaffirmed that the company was supporting the investigation.

In a statement, he added that Boeing was going ahead with a software update that will address the behaviour of the flight control system “in response to erroneous sensor inputs”.

Also on Sunday, ceremonies took place both in Kenya and Ethiopia to honour the victims.

Thousands of people gathered in the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Addis Ababa where empty coffins were draped in the national flag. None of the bodies has yet been formally identified because of the impact.

What do we know about the Ethiopian Airlines crash?

Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 took off from Addis Ababa Bole International Airport on the morning of 10 March, bound for Nairobi in Kenya.

Minutes into the flight, the pilot reported difficulties and asked to return.

Visibility was said to be good but air traffic monitor Flightradar24 said the plane’s “vertical speed was unstable after take-off”.

An eyewitness at the scene told the BBC there was an intense fire as the aircraft hit the ground.

French air safety investigators examined the flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder – or black boxes as they are often called – and have handed over their findings to their Ethiopian counterparts.

  • Caf Confed Cup: Five things we learned from Asante Kotoko’s 2-1 defeat at Zesco United

Asante Kotoko have crashed out of the Caf Confederation Cup following a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Zesco United in Zambia on Sunday.

Here are five things we learned.

    Defensive errors cost Asante

The Porcupine Warriors have been knocked out by their defence. The defending had been poor in the previous games but on Sunday it was terrible with Zesco United profiting to score two goals in two minutes to eliminate Kotoko.

    Kotoko missed Songne Yacouba

The absence of Songne Yacouba was immensely felt by Asante Kotoko who struggled to trouble Zescos defence. Dany Zabo Teguy, who was brought in to replace the Burkina striker, couldn’t exert himself as Kotoko struggled in the attacking third of their opponent. In a game of this magnitude, Kotoko needed their top marksman on the field with his absence contributing to their exit.

    Bonsu again in subdued mode.

The Black Stars newboy again produced a disappointing performance. He being the engine of the team, his performance against Al Hilal in Kumasi proved costly and on Sunday he couldn’t lift himself. Bonsu failed to dominate midfield as he is noted for and it came at a cost as Zesco had easy access in the middle of the park and carved open Kotoko defence with ease.

CK Akonnor was naive on the big occasion.

Going into the game, Kotoko knew a win would be enough to see them through so after opening the scoring all the Porcupine Warriors had to do was to sit deep in their own half and protect the goal. However, CK allowed his men to push high up the field, leaving spaces at the back which Zesco gladly took and made the most of.

Amos Frimpong not Black Stars material yet.

Defender Amos Frimpong has a called up into the senior national team, Black Stars but on Sunday proved he doesn’t merit the invite. He was sluggish in possession, offered little to support Kotoko’s attack and didn’t defend well. His display comes as no suprise that Kotoko’s only clean sheet in the group stage was achieved in his absence. Amos is a fine defender but not one to offer regular Harrison Afful a stern competition.

  • National Women’s Special Competition: Ashtown Ladies hold Kumasi Sports Acadamy to a goalless draw

Ashtown Ladies held Kumasi Sports Acadamy to a goalless draw in the Normalization Committee National Women’s Competition matchday three at the Prempeh School park.

The visitors, Ashtown Ladies in the early stage of the game indicated clearly to offer the homers a tough game leaving no stone unturned as they dominated the midfield play to the disadvantage of the Acadamy Ladies.

Creating several goal-scoring opportunities in the first quarter of the game, having their targets missing the goal post by miles and inches.

Thirty minutes after an exciting football game at the Prempeh School Park, Kumasi Acadamy Ladies still couldn’t find the back of the next despite serging forward to find an opener. The first stanza of the game ended in an exciting fashion with both sides hitting the woodwork.

After the recess the visitors were little nerves at goal, having picked two loss balls from their opponent half due to lack of communication between the central pairing of Acadamy Ladies.Yakubu Fridaus of Ashtown Ladies had a glorious goal opportunity but she stroked wide after just the hour mark.

Fifteen minutes to end of the game, both sides hadBglaring chances but failed to score at the Prempeh School Park.

Group A of the Normalization Committee National Women’s competition is still opened for any club to make it to the next phase of the competition.

Fabulous Ladies have picked up five points after their match day three win as well as Ashtown Ladies and Kumasi Acadamy Ladies accumulating five points each.

The Porcupine Warriors, who needed a win to qualify for the quarterfinals, threw away a one-goal lead to lose 2-1 to the Zambian side in Ndola.

Kotoko stunned the host when they opened the scoring in the 46th minute through substitute Stephen Nkarkoi.

However, the lead lasted for eight minutes as Jesse Were restored parity with a close-range effort.

Two minutes later, Kondwani Mtonga scored to make it 2-1 for the Zesco and the Zambians held on to ensure that they finished the competition on a winning note.

  • UFC London: Darren Till suffers shock loss against Jorge Masvidal

Liverpool’s Darren Till suffered a shock loss to Jorge Masvidal in the main event at UFC London in front of a sold-out crowd at the O2 Arena.

The American veteran produced a devastating knockout in the second round to inflict only the second defeat of Till’s UFC career.

Till, fighting for the first time since his title loss to Tyron Woodley in September, was heavily tipped to bounce back at the first time of asking and give himself another shot at the welterweight crown.

But, on a night that saw former champion Michael Bisping inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame, Till was dropped by a brutal left hand that will no doubt push him further down the pecking order for a fight against newly-crowned champion Kamaru Usman.

Returning to winning ways at the first attempt was always top of Till’s agenda against the dangerous Masvidal, after suffering the first loss of his UFC career to Woodley in Dallas.

Till raised the roof on his last appearance in the UK in his home city of Liverpool, and was again buoyed by English support in the capital as he guided the crowd through a rendition of Sweet Caroline on his arrival in the octagon.

But the home favourite’s relaxed demeanour only made the knockout more of a surprise.

Masvidal likes to play on the fact he loves “fighting in people’s backyards” and insisted beforehand he would have to finish the bout inside the distance rather than let it go to the judges.

And he kept to his word to end his own run of successive defeats, as well as play up to his own tagline.

“I got dropped in the first and that made me wake up,” said Masvidal after the fight. “I wanted to get him back immediately.

“I love the scrap – Darren is so tough. Before I dropped him I hit him with some bombs and the dude just smiled at me like, like I do to other people.

“The kid is headed far – he is going places for sure.

“I want to fight for the belt now. Darren only has one loss and that is to the champion. I’ve got a huge body of work in this division and this corporation. It’s my time and I need that belt.”

Till did not give any interviews after the fight, instead going to hospital for checks.

    What next for Till?

The bout started in frantic fashion as Masvidal came leaping towards Till and caught the English fighter with a low kick, for which he apologised, but it seemed to rattle Till.

However the Liverpudlian responded with some showmanship of his own, shrugging off a couple of attempted strikes from his opponent before the knockout blow landed.

Till has spoken about the pain of his second-round loss to Woodley, but the welterweight division has moved on swiftly in the past six months and Till’s position is now unclear.

Woodley has since lost the title to Usman and, with Woodley potentially set to face fellow American and former interim champion Colby Covington next, as the division’s number three Till hoped to step up his campaign to face the Nigerian newly-crowned champion.

But now he may have to look elsewhere for his next fight on the promotion, with Leon Edwards having a legitimate claim to facing his fellow countryman after beating Gunnar Nelson in the co-main event, while UFC newcomer Ben Askren will also be waiting in the wings after attending the event as guest fighter and engaging in a Twitter spat with Till in the build-up.

Edwards makes it seven in a row

Birmingham fighter Edwards made no secret in the build-up to UFC London that he felt he should be fighting Till in the headline bout, but instead the number 10 welterweight was handed a co-main event fight against Nelson.

And he kept to his end of the bargain, taking a split-decision victory to extend his winning streak to seven fights – a run that stretches back to a loss to now-champion Usman in December 2015.

Edwards’ improved grappling skills saw him match submission specialist Nelson, a team-mate of Irish star Conor McGregor, during the first round but support for his opponent – including the now-trademark Icelandic thunderclap – was deafening.

It was the Englishman who again ended round two on the attack as he pounced on a stumble from Nelson to throw a flurry of dangerous strikes on the ground which proved enough to clinch him the bout.

“I feel good, I’m on a seven-fight winning streak now in one of the hardest divisions in the sport,” said Edwards.

“The winner of the main event, that should be my fight.”

Like most people inside the O2, Edwards expected that to be Till, rather than Masvidal.

But in another surprising twist, Masvidal and Edwards came to blows as the American walked away from a post-fight interview, with Masvidal throwing several punches towards the Englishman as Edwards was hauled away by his team.

The incident was swiftly dealt with by the UFC’s security team.

    Wood extends unbeaten start

Nathaniel Wood did not disappoint on his first UFC appearance in the UK as the bantamweight extended his unbeaten start to life on the promotion to three successive wins with a second-round submission against Mexican Jose Quinonez.

The 25-year-old Londoner had been eyeing a spot on this card since his UFC debut last June and the former Cage Warriors champion became a fans’ favourite from the moment he stepped into the octagon at the O2 Arena.

‘The Prospect’, whose last trip to the venue was to watch his now mentor and trainer Brad ‘One Punch’ Pickett in action five years ago, was the more aggressive throughout and brought the entire crowd to its feet when he forced Quinonez to tap out with a rear-naked choke hold.

“This really means so much to me,” said Wood. “It really is a dream come true.”

Meanwhile, a “gutted” Danny Roberts felt his welterweight contest with London-based Claudio Silva should have been given longer after the referee stopped it for a verbal tap out in the third round.

“Yes, I might have made noise and grunted – I was hurt – but I was ready to take it all the way,” said the English fighter.

Meanwhile, American Dominick Reyes took his light-heavyweight bout against Switzerland’s Volkan Oezdemir on a split decision, before calling out UFC champion Jon Jones.

    Marshman wins ‘Battle of Wales’

The first fight on the main card was dubbed the ‘Battle of Wales’, but there was more than national pride at stake with the loser of the middleweight bout knowing their place in the UFC may also be under threat.

The respect between Jack Marshman and John Phillips was obvious – Phillips stopping to let his countryman to his feet in the first round before sharing a high-five – but when the result went in Marshman’s favour by way of split decision it was greeted by boos from some inside the arena.

Phillips was left to shrug his shoulders in the direction of his corner, and ponder his future on the promotion.

There was no such reaction earlier when Molly McCann earned the first win of her UFC career.

‘Meatball’ said she “couldn’t see” by the time her fight with Brazilian Priscilla Cachoeira was over, but despite the Liverpudlian’s eye being completely swollen shut she took a unanimous decision after a brutal three rounds.

Mike Grundy began his career in the UFC with a bang as he stopped fellow Englishman Nad Narimani in the second round.

  • Christchurch shootings: Attacker was ‘lone gunman’

The man charged over Friday’s twin mosque attacks in the New Zealand city of Christchurch is believed to have acted alone, police say.

Australian Brenton Tarrant, 28, a self-described white supremacist, live-streamed the attack on Facebook.

Three others arrested afterwards are not believed to have been involved, Police Commissioner Mike Bush said, but added that he could not be conclusive.

Fifty people were killed and 50 injured in what is New Zealand’s worst attack.

Some 34 people remain in hospital receiving treatment for injuries ranging from severe gunshot wounds to “relatively superficial soft tissue injuries”, authorities said.

A four-year-old girl remains in a critical condition.

Commissioner Bush said authorities were working as fast as they could to finish formally identifying the victims of the attacks at the Al Noor and Linwood mosques.

He added that it was a sensitive process and that he was “aware of the cultural and religious needs”.

    Who was involved?

On Saturday, the main suspect appeared in court in a white prison shirt and handcuffs, smiling for the cameras.

He has been charged with one count of murder – with more charges expected to follow.

Commissioner Bush told a news conference that the 28-year-old was the only person charged with carrying out the shootings.

“He was stopped because he was believed to be a direct threat, our staff acted with absolute courage in intervening and had to use some force… they put themselves in harm’s way to stop any further attack – and I do believe they did prevent further attacks,” he said.

Commissioner Bush said police did not believe that two people arrested near the scene were involved. A woman was released without charge and a man was charged with firearms offences.

An 18-year-old was also arrested but his involvement was said to be “tangential” and he would appear in court on Monday, Commissioner Bush added.

However he cautioned: “I will not be saying anything conclusive until we are absolutely convinced as to how many people were involved.”

None of those detained had a criminal record.

Mr Tarrant has been remanded in custody without a plea and is due to appear in court again on 5 April.

The presiding judge ruled that the suspect’s face should be pixellated in photographs and moving images to preserve his fair trial rights.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said Mr Tarrant had a firearms licence and owned five guns.

  • Wolves knock Man United out to reach semi-finals

Wolverhampton Wanderers produced an outstanding second-half performance to overpower Manchester United and reach their first FA Cup semi-final for 21 years on an atmospheric night at Molineux.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side, in their first quarter-final since 2003, fully deserved their victory as United produced their worst performance under the interim management of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

United goalkeeper Sergio Romero, in for David de Gea, had kept United level with brilliant saves from Diogo Jota and Raul Jimenez either side of the interval, before the Mexican striker swivelled in the area to finally give Wolves the reward their domination merited with 20 minutes remaining.

Wolves were rampant and it was no surprise when the dangerous Jota doubled their lead six minutes later, shrugging off United’s Luke Shaw on the break before shooting low past the exposed Romero.

United defender Victor Lindelof was shown a red card by referee Martin Atkinson for a touchline challenge on Jota, but it was downgraded it to yellow after a VAR review and, even though Marcus Rashford pulled one back in stoppage time, Wolves were worthy winners.

  • Christchurch shootings: Attack suspect Brenton Tarrant appears in court

The main suspect in the mosque shootings that killed 49 people in New Zealand on Friday has appeared in court on a single murder charge.

Australian Brenton Tarrant, 28, appeared in the dock in a white prison shirt and handcuffs. Further charges are expected to be made against him.

PM Jacinda Ardern said Mr Tarrant had five guns and a firearms licence, adding: “Our gun laws will change.”

Two others are in custody. None of those detained had a criminal record.

Mr Tarrant was remanded in custody without plea and is due appear in court again on 5 April.

The first victim of Friday’s attack has been named by his family as Daoud Nabi, 71, who moved to New Zealand from Afghanistan in the 1980s.

The identities of the other victims have not yet been released.

A total of 48 people were wounded in the shootings. Among those injured are two young boys – aged two and 13. Eleven of those being treated at Christchurch Hospital are in a critical condition in intensive care, chief of surgery Greg Robertson said.

Bangladesh, India and Indonesia all say some of their citizens were killed in the shooting and others are unaccounted for.

On Saturday, Christchurch Mayor Lianne Dalziel expressed “revulsion” at this “act of terrorism” and voiced solidarity with the victims.

“We have welcomed new people into our city. They are our friends, they are our neighbours,” she told reporters. “We want to come together to support them.”

She added that flags would fly at half-mast on government buildings in the city “until further notice”.

Security remains tight across Christchurch. All mosques in New Zealand have been closed.

    How events unfolded

The first report of an attack came from the Al Noor mosque in central Christchurch during Friday prayers at 13:40 (00:40 GMT).

A gunman drove to the front door, entered and fired on worshippers for about five minutes.

The gunman, who live-streamed the attack from a head-mounted camera, identified himself as Brenton Tarrant in the footage, which showed him shooting at men, women and children.

The gunman is then said to have driven about 5km (three miles) to another mosque in the suburb of Linwood where the second shooting occurred.

One witness described how one of the worshippers had managed to disarm the man, who ran to a waiting car outside.

It is not clear where the arrests were made.

Police say they recovered firearms from both mosques, and explosive devices were found in a car belonging to one of the suspects.
