  • Alibaba Singles Day sales frenzy surpasses records

Internet giant Alibaba has set new sales records on Sunday for its biggest shopping day, the annual Singles Day.

The Chinese company hit a record $1bn (£774m; €883m) in sales in 85 seconds, and then just shy of $10bn in the first hour of the 24-hour spree.

In total, customers spent $30.8bn, up 27% on last year, but the lowest annual increase in the history of Singles Day.

Online discounts have been offered on 11 November, Alibaba’s informal holiday for singles, since 2009.

Alibaba Group chief executive Daniel Zhang said the spending bonanza demonstrated “customers’ continued pursuit to upgrade their everyday lifestyles”.

The event was kicked off on Saturday with a gala featuring US singer Mariah Carey, a Japanese Beyoncé impersonator and a shoe-shopping-themed Cirque du Soleil performance.

    What is Singles Day?

Alibaba invented the occasion to celebrate the unattached as an antithesis to the romantically involved on Valentine’s Day.

It is now the world’s biggest online sales event and this year’s total was more than Black Friday and Cyber Monday’s totals combined, according to Bloomberg.

Some 180,000 brands are available in the shopping blitz, including top technology companies Xaomi, Apple and Dyson.

Last year, the Chinese company expanded the event to the Western market, with downloads of its app AliExpress surging in the US and UK.

Will Singles Day keep on growing?

The shopping frenzy has broken world records in e-commerce sales – surpassing last year’s record at 17:34 Hong Kong Time (10:34 GMT).

However, observers believe as the event matures, its growth rate will slow down.

Alibaba has also faced new challenges this year, such as new rivals in the market, a slowing economy and its stock dropping 16% thanks to China’s trade war with the US.

The November sale event is expected to be founder Jack Ma’s last at the helm of the company. The current chief executive will take over as chairman next year, Alibaba announced in September.

  • Let’s arise and shine,Ghana!

Anytime Ghana gets the opportunity to host the rest of Africa in football tournaments, she always passes with full marks, as far as my mental faculties can recollect.

That is why I’m fascinated about the continental football fiesta which will take centre stage in Accra and Cape Coast from this weekend.

After some earlier challenges, the dream has finally become a reality as the much-anticipated 13th edition of the Total Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) will kick-off at the refurbished Accra Stadium this Saturday with an appetising opener between the Black Queens of Ghana and their Algerian counterparts at 15.30 hours GMT (3.30pm).

The opening game will be followed by the other Group A match between Mali and Cameroun at 18.30 hours GMT (6.30pm).

Read: Black Queens attacker Priscilla Hagan to miss AWCON due to injury

The defending champions, Super Falcons of Nigeria, will begin their title defence against stubborn South Africa at Cape Coast on Sunday at 3.30pm, followed by Zambia and Equatorial Guinea at 6.30pm.

I was compelled to put on hold an intended series of national interests in order to galvanise support for this equally important national assignment which needs all hands on deck to ensure a successful hosting of the tournament.

Interestingly, this is the first time Ghana is hosting the Women’s AFCON, which ironically is yet to be won by the Queens who are indisputably one of the powerhouses of women’s football on the continent.

Out of the 12 editions so far, the Super Falcons have won the title 10 times, while emerging force, Equatorial Guinea, hosted and won the remaining two trophies in 2010 and 2014.

If there is a place for logic in football, then Coach Bashir Hayford and his Queens also stand a chance of making history as the third team to host and win the trophy.

Besides winning the ultimate, the other motivation for the Queens is to pick one of the three tickets reserved for the top three teamsfor the FIFA Women’s World Cup in France in June-July next year

The nation woke up to a refreshing news last Friday when the contractors finally handed over the new-look Accra Stadium to the Ministry of Youth and Sports. Apart from capitalising on territorial advantage to win the trophy for the first time, the other benefit of hosting such international competitions is to improve upon the nation’s sports infrastructural deficit, not to talk of the economic boost to the local currency, the hospitality industry, transport industry, and above all, Africa unity.

History is replete with some captivating stories of how Ghana hosted similar events in the past. Apart from the enthralling host-and-win experience at the 1978 Africa Cup of Nations in Accra, which my mind could hardly capture at a very tender age then, the events that followed on home soil in contemporary times were quite remarkable and memorable.

That perhaps explains why the continental football body, CAF, keeps knocking at the doors of this soccer-crazy country at the least opportunity.

Ghana has a track record of excelling on such occasions, even at short notice. I vividly recall how Ghana readily stepped in to co-host the 2000 edition of the AFCON alongside our noisy neighbours, Nigeria, when Zimbabwe was stripped of the hosting rights on political grounds at the eleventh hour.

Those were the days of the longest-serving Sports Minister, Enoch Teye (E.T) Mensah, and the Black Stars went into the tournament with high expecations under Italian trainer, Giuseppe Dossena.

However, after a fascinating 1-1 draw against the Indomitable Lions of Cameroun at the Accra Stadium, the farthest Ghana could go as co-host was the last eight stage (quarter-finals).

That memorable event was preceded by another memorable 1999 Africa U-20 Championship which Ghana host and won in Accra under Coach Dossena.

Read: Ghana must win 2018 AWCON trophy at all cost Songo

That historic moment was followed almost a decade later by the much-touted Ghana 2008 AFCON host and win dream which turned out to be a mirage at the end of the day.

When it mattered most, the best performance Claude Le Roy’s Black Stars could muster was a bronze after losing 0-1 to Cameroun in that heart-breaking semi-final clash at the Accra Stadium.

But through it all, the nation still received all the plaudits for the outstanding organisation as hosts, whether she won the ultimate trophy or not.

The same quality organisation was on display when Ghana hosted and won the sub-regional WAFU Cup at Cape Coast last year.

Once again, the entire nation is being called upon to mobilise our resources to ensure another great tournament as Ghana showcases the best of hospitality while hosting seven other countries — Nigeria, South Africa, Cameroun, Zambia, Algeria, Mali and Equatorial Guinea — in the next fortnight.

From their recent international friendlies against Zambia and Kenya, it can be deduced that the journey could be tortuous for the Queens but the girls can still draw inspiration from their victorious WAFU Cup campaign in Cote d’Ivoire last February to pull through.

Arise and shine, Black Queens! History beckons !

Too Good: Thomas Partey – It was indeed an eventful day for the Atletico Madrid midfielder who was involved in all three goals as his side came from behind to register a 3-2 win over Athletic Bilbao in the Spanish La Liga on Saturday. The midfielder scored on the day, set-up another and launched a free-kick that led to the match winner in stoppage time.

Bad: Kasim Adams – After picking a red card in the penultimate game against Olympique Lyonnais in the Champions League, the centre-back was relegated to the bench as Hoffenheim beat Augsburg 2-1 in the German Bundesliga on Saturday.

Too Good: Samuel Tetteh – The 22-year-old striker registered his first season goal of the Austrian top division on Saturday as LASK Linz thrashed Admira Wacker 5-1. He came on for the winners in the 69th minute.

Too Good: Andre Ayew – The Ghanaian signed off for international duty in style after netting in Fenerbahce’s 2-0 triumph over Alanyaspor in the Turkish Super Lig on Sunday. It was his third goal for The Yellow Canaries since completing a loan move from English side Swansea City.

Bad: Nicholas Opoku – First, it was refreshing to see the centre-back in Udinese’s matchday squad for Sunday’s Serie A tie against Empoli after seemingly picking up an injury in the penultimate game against AC Milan. But that he warmed the bench in the latest match suggests some form of punishment for the summer signing whose costly mistake led to Milan winning the matchday 11 fixture in injury time.

  • Education system lacks equity – Deputy Education Minister

The Deputy Minister of Education, Dr Yaw Adutwum, has observed that Ghana’s education system lacks equity but pledged to help reverse it with new strategies being implemented.

  • GRA interdicts officers over $3.5 financial loss

The Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has interdicted some of its officers for conspiring with three companies to deprive the country of revenue amounting to $3.5 million.

According to a statement released by the Authority and signed by the Commissioner General, Kofi Nti, the three companies, Hendrick Shipping, Springfield Shipping, and Christerl Shipping were caught in acts of diversion of re-exportation of goods at the Akanu Border Post.

The matter has been referred to the Economic and Organised Crimes Office for further investigation.

In the statement, GRA further assures the public that the necessary disciplinary measures would be taken against the officers upon completion of the investigations.

    GRA recovers GHc3.9

Last week, the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) announced that it had recovered GHc3.9 million from offenders of the transit goods regulations.

The amount, which was collected between January and September this year, is an accumulation of duties and penalties charged importers and clearing agents who diverted transit goods onto the Ghanaian market.

Transit goods do not attract any duty in Ghana because the products are not meant for the local market or to be consumed in the country.

However, some of the owners of the transit goods divert them onto the Ghanaian market for consumption.

Transit goods include goods that have departed their dispatch, loading, or shipping point but have not yet arrived at the receipt, offloading or delivery point.

Vincent Ekow Assafuah, Head of Public Relations at the Ministry of Education told The Finder that the students on Green Track, which started school on September 11, 2018 went on break on Wednesday November 7, 2018 and used Thursday and Friday to pack out paving the way for the second track students to report.

He explained that boarding students on the Gold Track were expected to report to school over the weekend, starting from Saturday November 10, 2018.

According to him, the day students will join the boarders today to start academic work.

He announced that 395 Senior High Schools that have been oversubscribed by students are running the system since the student numbers are more than the available infrastructure.

Assafuah told The Finder that about 174,000 students enrolled in the Green Track but the ministry was still collating the returns from the schools to the get the final numbers as some heads did not adhere to the instruction to enroll all students in the system.

    423,134 students secure SHS placement

The Ghana Education Service (GES) released the placements of 423,134 students who successfully made it under the 2018 Computerized School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS).

Final year day students benefit from Free SHS

Government has absorbed the school fees of all final year day students in senior high schools across the country as part of the Free SHS policy.
The policy initially only covered students who entered secondary school in 2017 and 2018.

    Fees covered by Free SHS

In addition to tuition, which is already free, admission fees, library fees, science center fees, computer lab fees, examination fees, utility fees have all been scrapped.

There would be free text books; free boarding and free meals and day students would get a meal at school for free.

    1992 Constitution on Free Education

The 1992 Constitution of Ghana has some provisions that call for the need for free compulsory basic education.

For instance, Article 25 (1) says: “All persons shall have the right to equal education opportunities and facilities, and with a view to achieving the full realisation of that right (a) basic education shall be free, compulsory and available to all; (b) secondary education in its different forms, including technical and vocational education, shall be made generally available and accessible to all by every appropriate means, and in particular, by the progressive introduction of free education”.

In Article 38 (1) stipulates that: “The State shall provide educational facilities at all levels and in all the regions of Ghana, and shall, to the greatest extent feasible, make those facilities available to all citizens.

“The Government shall, within two years after Parliament first meets after the coming into force of this Constitution, draw up a programme for implementation within the following ten years, for the provision of free, compulsory and universal basic education”.

The aforementioned provisions in the supreme law of the land clearly highlight the need for free compulsory and universal education at the basic level, therefore, gives credence to the implementation of the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy by the government.

Reduce huge financial burden on parents and guardians

The Free Senior High School/Technical and Vocational Education Training (SHS/TVET) policy initiative is intended to relieve the huge financial burden on parents and guardians to ensure that students who qualified for second-cycle education would have quality, equity and accessible education.

It also marks the end of the era when financial constraints were a barrier to the aspirations of children who wanted to access second-cycle education.

Free SHS to help Ghana achieve SDGs-4

The Free SHS policy is in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs-4) Target One, which stipulates that: “By 2030, all boys and girls complete free, equitable and quality primary and secondary education, leading to relevant and effective learning outcomes.”

It also states that by 2030, all girls and boys will have access to quality early childhood development, care and pre-primary education, so that they are ready for primary education.

  • Brexit: No deal threat is a ‘political hoax’ – Starmer

Labour’s shadow Brexit secretary Sir Keir Starmer has said the government’s threat of leaving the EU without a deal is a “political hoax”.

He said Parliament must “take back control” instead if the government’s plan is rejected by MPs.

“There is no duty on MPs to surrender to a bad deal,” he writes in the Sunday Times.

A Downing Street source said the government aimed to secure an agreement with the EU soon, but not at any cost.

    ‘Historic mistake’

Any deal reached between the government and the EU is likely to have to rely on the 10 votes from MPs in the Democratic Unionist Party for a majority in Parliament.

But, while Labour was confirmed its willingness to vote down the agreement, a key DUP MP also sounded a warning.

Sammy Baker, the party’s Brexit spokesman, has written a opinion article together with Steve Baker, a Tory MP who is deputy chairman of the pro-Brexit European Research Group. In the piece, the duo rejecting the current plans.

They say that the arrangements for avoiding a hard border with the Republic of Ireland are a “humiliation” because they either tie the UK to EU rules or split the country.

“If the government makes the historic mistake of prioritising placating the EU over establishing an independent and whole UK, then regrettably we must vote against the deal,” they write in the Sunday Telegraph.

Voting against the deal would mean leaving the EU without any agreement at all, the government has warned.

But Sir Keir said the Prime Minister’s attempts to “threaten rather than persuade” would not work and Labour is prepared to reject the government’s plans.

“Labour will stick to its guns. Supporting a bad deal is not in the national interest,” he said.

Instead, he said that MPs would be able to table motions, press amendments and trigger a no-confidence vote in order to prevent the UK leaving without a deal.

Sir Keir said: “I remain as convinced as ever that the consequences of no deal would be so severe that it cannot be allowed to happen.”

  • California wildfires: Death toll rises to 25

The death toll in the wildfires raging through California has risen to 25, according to officials.

This comes after 14 more bodies were discovered in or near the decimated town of Paradise in the state’s north, bringing the number of confirmed dead there to 23.

Two more people were killed in the south, near Malibu.

An estimated 250,000 people have been forced to flee their homes to avoid three major blazes in the state.

Meanwhile, President Donald Trump has drawn anger by saying that poor forestry management is to blame for the fires.

The Camp Fire began spreading through Butte County on Thursday, and firefighters were powerless to stop it destroying the town of Paradise.

Read: California wildfires: 250,000 flee monster flames ravaging state

Another fire swept into the affluent southern beach resort of Malibu on Friday and has now doubled in size.

That fire, known as the Woolsey, now covers an area of 70,000 acres (28,000 hectares).

Among the towns under evacuation orders is Thousand Oaks, where a gunman killed 12 people in a rampage on Wednesday.

Meteorologists have warned that dangerous conditions may continue well into next week, but firefighters say they are hoping to take advantage of a temporary lull in the wind fanning the flames.

What is the latest on the Camp Fire?

At a news conference on Saturday, Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea said 10 of the additional victims were found in Paradise with four in the nearby Concow area.

Images from Paradise showed the sky filled with acrid smoke, almost blotting out the sun.

By Saturday, the Camp Fire had burned 100,000 acres (40,500 hectares) and was only 20% contained. Fire chiefs estimate it will take about three weeks to fully control the blaze.

The fire started in the Plumas National Forest, north of Sacramento, on Thursday and quickly engulfed the town of Paradise.

Residents fled for their lives as more than 6,700 homes and businesses were destroyed, making the fire the most destructive in the state’s history. The flames moved so fast that some had to abandon their cars and escape the town on foot.

    Driving through walls of flame

Paradise is hell. A smouldering, sepia world in ruins. The air is acrid. Burning chemicals leave a bitter taste in your mouth.

Walking among the ashes of people’s lives is eerie and awful. There is a profound sadness here. We pass a child’s charred swing, a swimming pool filled with filth, and worst of all, a pet dog which did not survive.

Such was the intensity of the blaze that much of the debris is hard to recognise. Wafers of ash are drifting down like enormous snowflakes, smothering sound.

But it is not quite silent here. A sooty squirrel scrambles up a blackened tree in a panic. There are booms and creaks from burning trees and telegraph poles.

And soon, going from ruin to ruin, there will be the sound of those with the hardest job of all, checking to see if anyone was left behind.

Fire officials have also issued evacuation notices for parts of Chico, a town of 93,000 people north of Sacramento.

    Where is the Woolsey Fire?

The blaze started on Thursday near Thousand Oaks, about 40 miles (64km) north-west of central Los Angeles. Another blaze, the Hill Fire, started at about the same time, also near Thousand Oaks.

On Friday, the flames jumped Highway 101 and headed into coastal areas.

All residents have been ordered to evacuate.

Los Angeles County sheriff’s Chief John Benedict said on Saturday that two people had been found dead but provided no details on the deaths.

Malibu and nearby Calabasas are home to many celebrities and some have been forced to flee, including Kim Kardashian West, Caitlyn Jenner, Lady Gaga and Guillermo Del Toro.

The actor Martin Sheen was briefly reported missing but he later said he was on Zuma Beach in Malibu, unharmed.

The fire has also reportedly destroyed one of the sets for the TV series Westworld and is threatening Malibu’s Pepperdine University, a private residential college with more than 7,000 students.

Firefighters have not managed to build containment barriers around the fire.

    What did Mr Trump say?

The President has previously blamed Californian officials for wildfires and threatened to withhold federal funding.

In a tweet on Saturday, he again accused state authorities of “gross mismanagement”.

Evan Westrub, spokesman for state Governor Jerry Brown, hit back, called Mr Trump’s comments “inane and uninformed”.

“Our focus is on the Californians impacted by these fires and the first responders and firefighters working around the clock to save lives and property,” he said.

Celebrities also criticised Mr Trump’s unsympathetic reaction.

California-born singer Katy Perry called it an “absolutely heartless response”, while singer-songwriter John Legend said Mr Trump “can’t bring himself to show some empathy to Californians dealing with a horrific disaster”.

There is a total of 16 fires currently active in California. Officials have put most of Northern California under a Red Flag Warning, which means “extreme fire behaviour” can occur within 24 hours.

The region has grappled with serious wildfires in recent years, including the worst in the state’s history – the Mendocino fire in 2018.

  • Mid-term elections 2018: Florida orders recount of votes

Florida has ordered a machine recount of votes for state governor and senator following Tuesday’s closely fought mid-term elections, officials say.

Florida Secretary of State Ken Detzner said that as unofficial results in both races had fallen within a margin of 0.5%, a recount was required by law.

The two ballots are among the most important yet to be decided.

US President Donald Trump responded to the news by accusing Democrats of trying to “steal” the elections.

The state’s Republican Governor Rick Scott, who is standing for the senate, also warned of electoral fraud, but neither he nor President Trump offered any evidence to back their claims.

The recounts are expected to take several days, but analysts say possible legal challenges mean it could take weeks for the winners to be confirmed.

In the race for Florida’s Senate seat, unofficial results revealed a gap of just 0.15% between the votes for incumbent Democrat Bill Nelson and Mr Scott.

Read: Trump bets election on fear and lies

Democrat Andrew Gillum had already conceded the state governorship, but Ron DeSantis’s lead for the Republicans later narrowed to 0.41%.

After the recount was announced, Mr Gillum said: “I am replacing my words of concession with an uncompromised and unapologetic call that we count every single vote.”

Mr DeSantis, however, insisted that the results were “clear and unambiguous, just as they were on election night”.

“It is important that everyone involved in the election process strictly adhere to the rule of law which is the foundation for our nation,” he added.

Mr Trump had earlier said there was “a lot of dishonesty” over contested votes.

Some candidates have already launched legal action. Mr Scott, who claimed victory on Tuesday, is suing officials over an election recount, while Mr Nelson is suing over uncounted ballots – and there have also been a number of protests outside the elections office.

Mr Scott called on sheriffs in every county to closely monitor the recount process, tweeting: “We will not let unethical liberals steal this election!

“It’s time Senator Nelson accepts these results and allows the state of Florida to move forward to a better future.”

What else did Mr Trump say?

Mr Trump told reporters on Friday, before leaving for Paris to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of World War One, he believed that Mr Scott had clearly won the election.

The president said he would send his lawyers to Florida “to expose the fraud”, calling the Nelson campaign’s recount lawyer Marc Elias an election stealer.

Florida has a history with close elections. In 2000, George W Bush and Al Gore faced an impasse with the presidential vote hanging in the balance amid weeks of legal wrangling.

Mr Gore’s fate was finally sealed by a US Supreme Court ruling that said in essence that time had run out for recounts in the crucial state, granting Mr Bush the presidency.

Which other races are still undecided?

In Georgia’s gubernatorial election, Democrat Stacey Abrams is refusing to concede in her race against Republican incumbent Brian Kemp.

Mr Kemp declared victory on Wednesday with a narrow lead but campaign officials for Ms Abrams have started a legal challenge to ensure all votes are counted.

Her supporters have claimed that issues such as ballot machines supplied without power cables and four-hour queues unfairly helped Mr Kemp.

On Saturday, Ms Abrams said many unreported votes still had to be counted, but Mr Kemp insisted the current tally made it impossible for him to lose, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution newspaper reported.

In Arizona, another tight senate race has yet to conclude between two US congresswomen – Republican Martha McSally and Democrat Kyrsten Sinema.

With mail-in votes still being counted, Ms Sinema had widened her narrow lead to about 23,900 votes (1.17%) by Saturday evening, US media reported.

According to Bempah, who is an ardent supporter of the Porcupine Warriors, the club does not have enough quality in their ranks to finish the campaign with a flourish.

“I don’t see Kotoko winning the Confederations Cup but they can improve upon their previous performance,” he told Kumasi based Agenkwah FM.

“Kotoko is not having the quality of players to win the continental cup because there is not even 3 or more national team players in the team currently.”

He further stated that the management of the club, as well as the vociferous supporters of the club, should lower their expectations in the competition.

“The management, supporters should limit their expectations in the Confederation Cup.”

  • I will ‘never forgive’ Trump for endangering my family – Michelle Obama

Former first lady Michelle Obama discusses her dislike of President Donald Trump — as well as personal details of her life before and during her time in the White House — in her highly anticipated memoir, “Becoming,” The Washington Post reported Thursday.

Obama says she would “never forgive” Trump for the rumors he spread questioning the legitimacy of President Barack Obama’s American birth certificate, which she said threatened her family’s safety.

“What if someone with an unstable mind loaded a gun and drove to Washington? What if that person went looking for our girls?,” she wrote, according to the Post, which obtained an early copy of the book. It will be released next Tuesday. “Donald Trump, with his loud and reckless innuendos, was putting my family’s safety at risk. And for this I’d never forgive him.”

Trump responded to Obama’s book Friday morning, telling reporters: “She got paid a lot of money to write a book and they always expect a little controversy.”

He added that he would never forgive her husband Barack Obama “for what he did to our US military.”

“I’ll never forgive him for what he did in many other ways,” Trump continued. “What he did to our military made this country very unsafe for you, and you, and you.”

Obama wrote in her book that the so-called “birther” movement was “crazy and mean-spirited, of course, its underlying bigotry and xenophobia hardly concealed. But it was also dangerous, deliberately meant to stir up the wingnuts and kooks.”

Obama also recounts how her “body buzzed with fury” after hearing Trump’s candid lewd comments about grabbing women.

“It was an expression of hatred that had generally been kept out of polite company, but still lived in the marrow of our supposedly enlightened society — alive and accepted enough that someone like Donald Trump could afford to be cavalier about it,” she writes, according to the Post.

Obama also describes her private struggles and triumphs in the book, including her romance with her husband, their difficulties having children — including a miscarriage and that their daughters were conceived through in vitro fertilization — and her work to make the Office of the First Lady her own, the Post reports.

Shonda Rhimes, the producer behind the television shows “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Scandal,” praised the memoir as trailblazing yet relatable.

“I don’t think anybody will be necessarily prepared to read a memoir like this — especially coming from a first lady,” Rhimes told the Post, having read an advance copy of “Becoming.”

“I was very surprised, pleasantly surprised, by the level of candor and the level at which she opened herself up,” she added. “I love the honesty and the humor and the beauty with which she addressed the romance of her marriage and the tribulations of her marriage and motherhood, and all of those things that we as women all can relate to.”

Obama also reiterates that politics isn’t for her, alluding to her previous dismissal of a potential 2020 presidential run.

“I’ve never been a fan of politics, and my experience over the last ten years has done little to change that,” she writes according to the Post. “I continue to be put off by the nastiness.”

The police described the deceased as hardened armed robbers, which was vehemently refuted by the angry youth of Asawase.
