  • GHATOF desires single window tax regime to save time and cut cost

The Ghana Tourism Federation (GHATOF) is calling for single window payment system to streamline the many agencies members have to pay monies to consuming valuable time they are hard press for.

President of the federation, Madam Bella Ahu indicated tourism outlets have to deal with about ten different state agencies who charge fees, levies and duties blowing their tax bill.

She submitted a regime where the agencies have an integrated system such that a lump sum gets paid and all the agencies take their due will better serve the parties.

The Greater Accra Chairman of the Hotels Association, Benjamin Afunya stated the heavy tax burden on members has led to the laying off of workers. He said with reduction of staff, quality is compromised.

He regretted that their mother body; the Ghana Tourism Authority is not consulted by the tax agencies when slapping a new tax on them alleging with the AMA Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), officials sit in their office, look at the size of their hotels and then slap a hefty sum on them to pay.

The tourism outlets have to pay either levy, charges or duties to about 12 agencies including the Ghana Revenue Authority, Food and Drugs Authority, Environmental Protection Agency, Immigration Service, Registrar General Department, Fire Service as well as get the district assemblies directly levy each hotel unit.

Beyond these statutory regulatory bodies, government has also given legal backing to organizations such as Audio-Visual Rights Society of Ghana (ARSOG), Ghana Music Rights Organization (GHAMRO), Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), and Insurance Companies, to license and collect fees from operators of hotels on annual basis.

When these financial commitments are lined up together with the one percent (1%) Tourism levy paid by hoteliers, the VAT on services provided, Tier 1 pension contributions and the annual income tax, a real picture of an industry overburdened with taxes is created.

  • Cyclone Idai: Many dead in Zimbabwe and Mozambique

A tropical storm has swept away bridges and homes in eastern Zimbabwe, killing at least 24 people, officials say.

Cyclone Idai cut off power and communications in parts of Manicaland province on the border with Mozambique. Some 40 people are missing.

People fled from their homes to the slopes of mountain and were waiting to be rescued, but strong winds have hampered helicopter flights.

In Mozambique, where Idai made landfall on Thursday, at least 19 people died.

Flooding across the rest of the country had already killed nearly 70 people before the storm’s arrival.

Zimbabwe’s information ministry said the town of Chimanimani had been cut from the rest of Manicaland province. The country’s national army was leading the rescue efforts, it added.

The death toll was expected to rise as authorities continued to assess the situation.

Jacob Mafume, a spokesman for the opposition Movement for Democratic Change, said a “serious humanitarian crisis [was] unfolding” in the east of the country.

The cyclone hit Mozambique with winds of up to 177km/h (106 mph). It cut off more than 500,000 residents in the port city of Beira, one the country’s largest cities. Roads were flooded and the airport was shut down.

Mozambique has been struck by severe cyclones in the past, including Eline in 2000, when 350 people died and 650,000 were displaced across the wider region.

Beira has often seen the worst of the storms and has worked to limit the effects of rising waters brought about by climate change through a series of infrastructure projects.

  • Slavery in Africa not a thing of the past, it still exists today affecting millions

While natural hazards like hurricanes, exacerbated by climate change, are causing people to migrate, it’s conflict, violence and persecution that have forced more than 68.5 million people from their homes today, exposing them to higher risks and increased vulnerability, especially women and children.

Vulnerable people on the move face massive risks and uncertainty to find safety and opportunity for themselves and their families. Unfortunately, in many cases they are taken advantage of and their rights ignored, forced to work in terrible conditions for little, or in some cases, no money.

Elsewhere, 120,000 people crossed the Central Mediterranean in 2017 – the migrant route with most deaths recorded in the world, and nearly 2,900 migrants recorded killed or missing on that route in the same year.

Most of them traveled on smugglers’ boats departing from Libya, Tunisia or Egypt, risking their lives in search of safety and opportunity in Italy and beyond.

The reality of the harrowing journey in search of safety in Europe came into sharp focus when three-year-old Alan Kurdi’s [initially reported as Aylan Kurdi] image made headlines when he drowned in the Mediterranean after fleeing Syria with his family.

Recently, a little refugee boy from Mali also drowned in the Mediterranean. In preparation for the ill-fated trip, he had stitched a school report to his clothes to show European authorities what a good student he was.

In the Northern Triangle of Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador, thousands of Central Americans are arriving at the U.S.-Mexican border, fleeing domestic and gang violence, state corruption and impunity, climate-induced droughts, and economic hardship in their home countries.

We see women bearing the brunt of violence and poverty with high levels of sexual and gender-based violence, and alarming levels of femicide. It is not uncommon for a girl and her family to be targeted and even killed by gangs if she refuses to become a gang member’s sex slave.

And once at the border, children have died due to the difficult journey they are taking and as a result of medical care not being available on time.

In the US, there are countless examples of workers being exploited, many of whom are migrants. Oxfam published a report detailing how the poultry industry exploits vulnerable people who have few other options to take on the most dangerous and thankless jobs in the poultry plants.

Because of their precarious situations, most workers are afraid to speak out or do anything that might jeopardize their jobs. Oxfam reported that some workers were forced to wear adult diapers because they did not have adequate bathroom breaks.

As part of Oxfam’s Behind the Barcodes campaign, Oxfam has also worked with laborers in Southeast Asia and elsewhere for more rights and protections. In the seafood industry, workers find themselves in conditions akin to modern slavery.

Female migrant workers especially, who perform jobs like peeling the shrimps for cheap shrimp cocktail you can buy at your grocery store, are often subjected to illegal recruitment and have their travel documents and wages confiscated.

The UN and the international community do acknowledge the plight of modern slavery and the challenges migrant workers face around the world, but more needs to be done.

Unfortunately, instead of helping address and resolve the displacement crisis with thoughtful, humane policies, and a genuine sense of shared responsibility, too many leaders are using scare tactics and depicting migrants and refugees as violent criminals and terrorists, when they are in fact the ones fleeing violence and also have much to offer to their new communities.

These leaders around the globe are doing this with a blatant disregard for international humanitarian law, human rights and global norms that are meant to protect the most vulnerable amongst us.

This was demonstrated in the Trump Administration’s inhumane policies separating children from their families and in trying to deny women who are victims of domestic violence from seeking asylum in the United States.

There has been some progress to help migrants and refugees from the UN. In 2016, President Obama hosted a UN Summit for Refugees and Migrants. The Summit led to countries committing to a $4.5 billion increase in global humanitarian funding. Following the Summit at the UN General Assembly, 193 UN member states agreed to coordinate and cooperate to improve the global response to the migration crisis.

They agreed to do such things as ease pressures on countries that host most refugees, like Bangladesh, Uganda, Ethiopia, Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey. They committed to building refugees’ self-reliance through access to education and livelihoods, expanding access to resettlement and other complementary pathways, and fostering conditions for refugees to voluntarily return home.

They also agreed to start working on a Global Compact for Refugees and a Global Compact for Migration that was recently endorsed at the end of last year.

The compacts include such things as recognition of the need for meaningful participation by refugees and host communities in decision making and commitments to uphold the human rights of all migrants regardless of status.

On the downside, the compacts aren’t binding so there is no way to legally hold endorsers accountable. And, the United States retreated from its leadership role in protecting refugees and withdrew from the Global Compact on Migration.

Overall, the mass migration taking place globally presents opportunities but also huge risks for those who aren’t protected along the way or when they arrive.

Many think of slavery as a thing of the past, but it still exists today, affecting millions around the world, as people make desperate decisions for a better life.

We need more protections and more implementation of the systems we have in place to achieve a more safe and just world for everyone.

  • Minister for Special Development Initiatives pays courtesy call on NPP-NY Chapter

On Friday, March 15, 2019, the Minister for Special Development Initiatives & Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East Constituency, Honorable Mavis Hawa Koomson, paid a courtesy call on NPP-NY Chapter during her working visit in the USA.

In her delivery, she used the opportunity to express heartfelt gratitude to the Chapter for their financial contributions as well as humanitarian interventions in some critical rural communities in Ghana.

The cabinet Minister with oversight responsibility on special initiatives including the One Constituency, One Million Dollars policy, took time to outline some of the over three thousand projects that had so far been undertaken and ongoing in conjunction with the respective *MCEs & DCEs* in the various Constituencies.

Honorable Hawa Koomson, in her speech, reassured Ghanaians in the USA of delivery on the 275 ambulances expected to arrive by June this year.

The Chapter on their part took advantage of the cabinet Minister’s visit to express some concerns to the Presidency. *Paramount* on the list was the depreciating cedi against the dollar.

On behalf of the Chapter, the Vice Chairman, Mr. Issah Ballah Saeed pointed out that, though the depreciation was a major concern, Its performance comparative to the previous administration was better. He also stated that, “since the NPP promised the good people of Ghana a better livelihood, we have no excuse than to meet the expectations of Ghanaians back home, and the diaspora.”

Again, the Vice-Chairperson urged government to maximize efforts towards reducing import duties and tariffs.

The Minister briefly addressed both concerns by adding that “as a member of cabinet, she can confirm that rigorous steps are being taken to stabilize the depreciating cedi and that it was a major concern to everyone, especially the Vice President who is also the head of the Economic Management Team.” She further assured Ghanaians to expect some improvement after the Finance Minister returned from his current roadshow.

The Minister, in her closing remark, thanked all members and pleaded with them to exercise patience and have faith in the government and President Nana Akufo-Addo to make good on promises made to the people of Ghana.

  • Cedi depreciation: There’s something fundamentally wrong with our economy – Kofi Bentil

Vice President of IMANI Africa, Kofi Bentil says the continuous depreciation of the Ghanaian Cedi shows that there is something fundamentally wrong with our economy.

Speaking on Joy FM’s NewsFile on Saturday, March 16, Kofi Bentil said the current state of the Cedi shows that those managing the economy are not doing a good job.

Read: Cedi Depreciation: Politics will not help us find solutions to it – Kweku Baako

According to him, he is not putting all the blame at the doorstep of the economic management team, but from all indications, the team is not able to identify the real cause of the Cedi depreciation.

He added that Ghana had a trade surplus and low inflation, so the old theory of export more and import less seems not to be the case now because U.S has the biggest trade deficit but the dollar is still stable. The cedi now sells on Saturday, March 16 at 5.56.

“Let’s not assume we know what is causing this. Let us get people to sit down and analyze the depreciation and solve it.”

Kofi Bentil was reacting to statement of the Finance Minister Ken Ofori Atta that the Cedi will in few weeks time stabilise.

The Finance Minister addressing the media said efforts are underway to stabilise the cedi.

Read: Cedi depreciation: Expect a reversal soon Ofori-Atta

“We have about $300 million coming in from COCOBOD and another $600 million also from COCOBOD in about a month or so. We have officially launched our Eurobond which will be $3 billion and that should close within the next couple of weeks.”

Mr Ofori-Atta acknowledged that the challenge of governments over time has been how to structurally balance imports and exports. He also said the tag given to the Cedi as the cheapest in Africa is not fair.

“Inflation is at a single digit which is good, growth has been string (six per cent through the third quarter of last year), our budget deficit has gone down in a strong way and we are also getting surpluses in our current account,” he said stressing that there is no need for panic.

But Kofi Bentil said these approaches did not show we are aware of the real causes of the Cedi depreciation.

  • TOR workers want board removed

Some concerned workers of the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) have appealed to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to remove its Board of Directors and Managing Director for allegedly mismanaging the place.

The workers, who pleaded anonymity for fear of victimization, in a document made available to the Ghana News Agency, stated that for more than two years, the Board of Directors and Management of TOR have failed to make decisions that would make the Refinery viable.

“They have connived with the BDCs to tie-in to all our pipelines and hence denying TOR transmission income for their selfish gains, ”they alleged.

According to the workers, “It may interest the ordinary Ghanaian to note that engineers and technicians may not have the opportunity to go for training but rather cronies of the Board and the MD are sent to Dubai for training while workers’ provident fund (over GHs 30 million) SSNIT, pension, Medical Supplies and even Trade Union dues are in huge arrears”.

They further alleged that management staff were always busy approving foreign travels for themselves “as if TOR is a tourism company”.

They accused the Board and the MD of lacking ideas to move the Refinery forward stating that the MD since assumption of office had given several promises that were yet to yield any results.

They also questioned why “members of the Board come for meetings every time and walk away with fat envelops in the name of sitting allowances, fuel coupons and even travel outside in the name of TOR”.

  • Policeman brutally beaten by young men

A police officer was seen in a viral video being brutally assaulted by some group of young men in Kasoa in the Central Region of Ghana.

The officer in the video appeared helpless and the only thing that saved him from the heavy punches from these young men was his crush helmet.

It is unclear what led to the brutal assault on the officer who appeared to be directing traffic.

The Police over the week has been in the news for either assaulting journalists who were on their way to perform their duty or being threatened by a Member of Parliament (MP).

Three Journalists from the State-owned Ghanaian Times were assaulted by an officer who was riding on an unregistered motorbike hit which hit a vehicle belonging to the Ghanaian Times near the Kinbu traffic light in Accra last Thursday.

The Police Officer according to reports had allegedly jumped the red traffic lights and while meandering his way out, his motorbike hit the bumper of a Nissan saloon car belonging to the Ghanaian Times, breaking the mirror and windscreen of the car in the process. A pillion rider who saw what had happened beckoned him to stop but the police officer rode on.

The driver of the Ghanaian Times vehicle reports say, had to chase and manage to block the motorbike of the police officer a few meters away from the accident scene, whereupon a certain Malik, one of the journalists got down from the vehicle and started video-recording the incident with his mobile phone.

Angered by that action, the police officer attempted to snatch the mobile phone from the reporter and when he did not succeed, he allegedly punched the face of the reporter and blood gushed out from his nostrils. Other police officers and a soldier in uniform allegedly joined in the beating of the reporter, pushing, kicking, slapping and punching him.

Mrs Raissa Sambou Ebu and Salifu Abdul Rahaman, the report noted were physically manhandled and in the process, Mrs Ebu, a nursing mother, collapsed and was rushed to the Greater Accra Regional Hospital, Ridge, Accra, for treatment.

Meanwhile, trending in the news, on the Ghana police and the public is Kennedy Agyepong, the MP for Assin Central, who threatened to cause the dismissal of an officer on duty at the University of Education, Winneba, during a student demonstration last Thursday.

The Ghana Police Service, however, has issued a statement signed by the Director-General of the Public Affairs Directorate, cautioning the MP.

“The Police Administration, therefore, takes very strong exception to the behaviour of Mr Kennedy Agyapong who is a Member of Parliament and advises him to be mindful of his actions towards Police Officers whilst performing their lawful duties”, the statement indicated.

  • Akufo-Addo has ‘swindled’ me; ‘swerved’ 2016 alliance cash – Odike cries

The founder and leader of the United Progressive Party (UPP), Akwasi Addai Odike is wailing because current president Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has refused to make do his promise of a package for an alliance his party agreed with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the run up to the 2016 polls, MyNewsGh.com reports.

He disclosed that he has met the President 15 times since he won power on the matter just to ensure he fulfills his part of his bargain but he keeps tossing him and other executives of his UPP party around with the assurance it will be done.

“I have personally met the president 15 times here in Kumasi and Accra and each time he says Odike it will come be patient. But for two years now it has never come. They should keep faith with what we all agreed upon or else we will wash our dirty leanings in public”, he threatened on Kumasi-based Angel Fm monitored by MyNewsGh.com

According to him, the UPP negotiated a package with then candidate Akufo Addo of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) before their two parties went into an alliance to campaign for the presidency.

It may be recalled that, Mr Odike who had earlier backed out from the 2016 elections, openly declared his support for candidate Nana Akufo Addo in November 2016 and set out to campaign for him from then.

“We are throwing our support to the candidate of the NPP simply because his vision and our vision is almost the same, we believe in industrialization, we think that industries is the best way to turn around the fortunes of this country for the better,” Mr Odike said in an interview he granted Citi FM on November 10, 2016.

He added that “Nana Addo is a very humble person, very affable and he is a man of intelligence so we believe that if this man is at the helm of affairs of this nation [and he is also a listener], we can advise him in so many ways to change the fortunes of this country for better.”

Though he would not disclose the details of the said agreement with candidate Akufo Addo and his party, he said persons like the current Mayor of Kumasi, Osei Assibey Antwi is in the know on this issue.

He said his party met with some staunch members of the NPP, most of whom are appointees and ministers of the current government before subsequently meeting with Nana Akufo Addo to finalise the deal at Beauty Queen Restaurant in Kumasi.

His comments come on the back of a meeting by the National Executive Committee of his party in Accra this week, where it was unanimously voted to kick him out of the UPP.

Speaking on the development on Kumasi-based Angel FM, Akwasi Addai said the executives took that decision because they feel let down that, more than two years that they helped Nana Akufo Addo to win power, he has not been able to secure the benefits for them.

He said he has tried his best to get the President to fulfill his commitment to the UPP, but it has fallen on deaf ears and that he cannot do anything about it again because his “hands are tied”.

The businessman turned politician asserted that there are many members of the UPP who can perform far better than what some appointees of this government is doing. He has said nobody can kick him out of the UPP as it has been communicated by the executives of the party.

  • Concerned GNAT members in turf war with GES over upgrade of teachers

Some members of the Ghana National Association of Teachers in the Central region are currently at warpaths with the Ghana Education Service (GES) over the upgrading of teachers.

The teachers said GES recruits newly qualified teachers and place them on a higher rank while teachers already on the field are told to wait for 7 years before they are upgraded.

The teachers are worried over what they’ve described as distinctive policy statements on upgrading in GES.

They said that per the conditions of GES, “a teacher is permitted to move from senior Superintendent II rank to at least the Principal Superintendent rank by further studies”.

“According to section 19.7 of the GES conditions of service, the Ghana Education Service shall be responsible for the payment of tuition and examination fees of all employees who pursue Distance Education in approved courses and institutions. The same shall apply to certificated teachers who enroll in top-up programmes to qualify in terms of what is required to practice as a professional teacher at any given time,” the teachers said.

The aggrieved teachers in a petition signed by the district chairman for Assin South, Rockson Boateng to the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) said “teachers who obtain their 1st Degree certificates between 4 to 5 years after the completion of their Diploma Certificates respectively are eligible for upgrading since tertiary institutions admit Diploma holders on level 300 for a continuation of their programmes.”

The teachers in the petition have raised some 9 key questions to the GES on the modalities on the upgrade.

  • Ive not been reinstated Suspended UEW lecturer

One of the suspended lecturers at the University of Education-Winneba Dr. Emmanuel Sarpong has said he has not be recalled back to post, contrary to claims in the media.

Media reports suggest all lecturers who were either sacked or suspended by the embattled Vice Chancellor of the University Professor Afful-Broni have been reinstated as part of a peace accord following the tensions that have engulfed the school since Monday.

An impasse between the VC and some of his lecturers and the member of parliament for the Efutu constituency where the university is sited- resulted in a chaotic demonstration on campus on Wednesday by students leading to the destruction of several school properties.

The students contend some of their most efficient lecturers have been victimized by the Vice Chancellor as he seeks to assert his authority over the school.

Speaking to Starr News Friday, Dr. Sarpong, who was suspended for abstaining in a vote during a meeting, said he is yet to receive a call from any authority at the school.

“I have not received a call from anyone yet. I was suspended 13 months after the supposed offense. My suspension letter was signed by the Vice Chancellor himself.

” Reason is that I decided not to partake in a vote because I had not consulted by union. I told them I was on the committee on the account of the lecturers so I had to know their views before voting in a particular direction and I left. And that was all.

” This Monday I was in class when they brought my letter and said I had to leave so I had nothing to do. This was 13 months after the incident happened”.

Meanwhile, the Council of the university has promised to resolve the impasses as soon as possible.

“The Governing Council of the University of Education, Winneba has noted with concern the recent happenings on our Winneba campuses, especially with regard to agitations escalating into violence on life and property. The university is currently assessing the damage caused and will release a detailed Press Statement to address the issues including the misinformation that has taken the airwaves regarding the university.

“The University is committed to the directive of the Regional Minister, Chairman of REGSEC to close the Winneba and Ajumako campuses of the University until further notice. Early next week when Council shall meet, details of the way forward for the University will be communicated to the University Community and the General Public,” the Council said in a statement.

  • Slaughter House Land: Investigate Lands Minister immediately – Akufo-Addo told

The Concern Sunyani Butchers Association in the Bono Region have petitioned President Akufo-Addo to as a matter of urgency probe the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Mr. Kweku Asomah Cheremeh for allegedly purchasing a land which Sunyani Slaughter House is situated on for his private business.

In a petition signed by the Chief Butcher of the Association, Alhaji Seidu Mohammed, addressed to President Akufo-Addo and sighted by the media, alleged that “The Sunyani Municipal Assembly has conspired with certain persons to transfer the land on which the Sunyani Slaughter House is situated to one Nana Adu Adjei a 17 year old student of Achimota Senior High School in Accra”.

The letter added that “Our checks clearly indicates that, the parcel of land was purchased by Hon. Kweku Asomah Cheremeh the Former Brong Ahafo Regional Minister and now Lands and Natural Resources Minister in and with the name of his son”.

The letter emphasized “The land has over the decades created employment for over 200 Butchers who had their daily bread from the slaughter house. However due to the transfer of ownership of the land, this has rendered the zongo boys jobless”.

The letter accused the Lands and Natural Resources Minister for using the land to build a fuel station on it hence described this move as very bad and selfish decision taken by him.

“Mr. President, our checks indicate that, Hon. Asoma Cheremeh is behind the construction of a fueling station on the land which is located inside the market. We think this is very bad and a selfish decision by your Minister”, the letter bemoaned.

The letter therefore urged President Akufo-Addo to do something about the issue else the NPP will lose at Sunyani Zongo for the first time since 1992.

The letter revealed that they have channelled all their grievances to the party leadership in the Region and they all declined to the matter because Mr. Asomah Cheremeh is very powerful person in the NPP government.

The letter however, has pleaded with President Akufo-Addo to let the National Security to come down to Sunyani Zongo Slaughter House to probe this matter and ascertain the velocity of the facts for his perusal.

“Your Excellency, I am humbly pleading with you to allow your National Security to come down to Sunyani Zongo Slaughter House to probe this matter and ascertain the velocity of the facts for your perusal. Mr. President, we have channelled our grievances through the leadership of the NPP party in the Region but they have all declined to take up the matter for strange reasons. On one occasion, a member of the Regional Council of Elders told me that, Asoma Cheremeh is very powerful and most of the Executives dread him that is why they have all decided to keep a blind eye”, the letter urged.

The letter therefore, hinted “Your excellency, I would like to state unequivocally that, if the party has decided to abandon us, they should also forget about Sunyani Zongo. Because if they dare come here even for campaign, I can predict the reaction of the irate zongo youth”.

    Below is the full petition

    Concern Sunyani Butchers Association

    Bono Region

    Sunyani Zongo

    13th March, 2019

    The Republic of Ghana
    The President
    Jubliee House
    Kanda – Accra

    Your Execellency,

PETITION TO INVESTIGATE A TRANSFER OF LAND WHICH HAS RENDERED OVER 200 YOUTH JOBLESS

Mr. President, I write this letter with a heavy and furious heart however, I would begin by sending you warm greetings from the walls of sunyani zongo and also congratulate you for settling a long standing dispute at Dabgon. We are forever grateful.

However Mr. President, there is something very serious and disastrous happening in the Bono Region and I would like to bring to your notice in my capacity as an elder of the Zongo Community in the Sunyani township and also as a Senior and Chief Butcher of the Concern Butchers Association at the Sunyani Slaughter House in the Bono Region.

Mr. President, my message is simple and I will proceed by stating my points and explain them below seriatim:

    1. Mr. President, please all is not well at all in the Bono Region. Because the Sunyani Municipal Assembly has conspired with certain persons to transfer the land on which the Sunyani Slaughter House is situated to one Nana Adu Adjei a 17 year old student of Achimota Senior High School in Accra. Our checks clearly indicates that, the parcel of land was purchased by Hon. Kweku Asomah Cheremeh the Former Brong Ahafo Regional Minister and now Lands and Natural Resources Minister in and with the name of his son.

    2. The land has over the decades created employment for over 200 Butchers who had their daily bread from the slaughter house. However due to the transfer of ownership of the land, this has rendered the zongo boys jobless.

    3. Mr. President, our checks indicate that, Hon. Asoma Cheremeh is behind the construction of a fueling station on the land which is located inside the market. We think this is very bad and a selfish decision by your Minister.

    4. Mr. President, you can verify from your records and same will prove to you that, Sunyani Zongo was the first zongo the NPP won and has been winning here since the 1992 constitution was promulgated. But Mr. President I assure you that 2020 will be the first time NPP will lose at Sunyani Zongo. Because the victory chalked by the party over the decade has been through the instrumentality of some of us but now, our own party wants to turn against us and take our daily bread from our mouths.

    6. Mr. President, it is important to note that we have occupied the land for the past 70 years now. No one has ever tried to vacate us from the land not even our political opponents. The land has undoubtedly fed millions of the inhabitants of the Zongo Community. But now, one man has decided to take this away from us. Mr. President, as at the time we took possession of the land, even Asomah Cheremeh himself was not born.

    7. Your Excellency, I am humbly pleading with you to allow your National Security to come down to Sunyani Zongo Slaughter House to probe this matter and ascertain the velocity of the facts for your perusal. Mr. President, we have channelled our grievances through the leadership of the NPP party in the Region but they have all declined to take up the matter for strange reasons. On one occasion, a member of the Regional Council of Elders told me that, Asoma Cheremeh is very powerful and most of the Executives dread him that is why they have all decided to keep a blind eye.

    8. Your excellency, I would like to state unequivocally that, if the party has decided to abandon us, they should also forget about Sunyani Zongo. Because if they dare come here even for campaign, I can predict the reaction of the irate zongo youth.

Mr. President, it is our prayer you treat this matter with all seriousness to immediately ascertain the efficacy of the matter because we are suffering.

Thank You and may Allah bless you.

    Yours faithfully

  • GJA condemns barbaric assault on Ghanaian Times Journalists

The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has condemned in no uncertain terms the alleged assault on three Ghanaian Times journalists by police officers in Accra on Thursday, March 14, 2019.

The affected journalists- Salifu Abdul Rahman, Malik Sulemana, and Raissa Sambou Ebu- were said to be traveling in their official vehicle to their various assigned venues when they decided to film an accident involving a police officer riding an unregistered motorcycle and the vehicle transporting the journalists at Kinbu in Accra central.

The about 10 police officers who were not happy that the journalists had tried to record the accident and the ensuing exchanges between their driver and the police motor rider, pounced on the journalists and physically assaulted them.

Read: Attacks on journalists must end GJA to police

Mrs Sambou, a lactating mother was rushed to the emergency unit of the Ridge Hospital, while Sullemana, who received a chunk of the assault was locked up at the Ministries Police Station, but was later released.

GJA in a statement signed by its president, Affail Monney said, “we call on the Police Administration to undertake swift investigations into the incident and, for once, punish the perpetrators of such heinous crime.”

?”Reports available to the GJA indicate that a policeman riding on an unregistered motorbike hit a vehicle belonging to the Ghanaian Times around 8:45am today and sped off.

The policeman had allegedly jumped traffic and while meandering his way out, his motorbike hit the bumper of a Nissan saloon car belonging to the Ghanaian Times, breaking the mirror and windscreen of the car in the process. His pillion rider who saw what had happened tried to stop him, but the policeman rode on,” the statement indicated.

Read: Police assault on Times reporters ‘barbaric’ GJA

It added that “the driver of the Ghanaian Timesvehicle then chased and managed to block the policeman around Kinbu, a few metres away from the accident scene, whereupon the reporter got off the vehicle and started video-recording the incident with his mobile phone. Angered by that action, the policeman attempted to snatch the mobile phone from the reporter and when he did not succeed, he allegedly punched the face of the reporter, as blood gushed out from his nostril. Other policemen and a soldier in uniform allegedly joined in the beatings of the reporter, pushing, kicking, slapping and punching him.”

“Other reporters of Ghanaian Times in the vehicle Salifu Abdul Rahaman and Raissa Sambou Ebu were also heckled, and in the process, Raissa, a nursing mother, collapsed and was rushed to the Greater Accra Regional Hospital for treatment.”

It noted that “according to the reports, the police officers demanded the mobile phone of the reporter and subsequently handcuffed and bundled him into a police vehicle. They then sent him to the Ministries Police Station and detained him for about four hours. The police were said to have ignored several pleas from the reporter to send him to hospital for medical treatment.”

“The reporter was later brought out of the cell and allegedly dragged on the staircase to an office on the second floor where he was asked to write a statement. But he declined to do so, insisting on the presence of his lawyer before proceeding. He was then sent back into the cell, as an officer at the counter continued to hit him in the back. It took the intervention of ACP David Eklu, the Director-General of Public Affairs Directorate of the Ghana Police Service, and ASP EfiaTenge, the Accra Region Police Public Relations Officer, to save the reporter from more torture.”

“The GJA finds the assault by the said police officers barbaric in an era of rule of law when the police are supposed to be law enforcers rather than law breakers. We call on the Police Administration to find and punish the perpetrators of this dastardly act to serve as deterrent to others and redeem theimage of the Ghana Police Service from shameful tag of a brutish institution. This incident must not be added to the list of unresolved cases of assault against journalists by police officers. This culture of impunity must end now!”

Assault On Ghanaian Times Reporters By Police Is Barbaric

The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) condemns in no uncertain terms an alleged assault of a reporter of Ghanaian Times by a police officer in Accra Thursday, March 14, 2019. We call on the Police Administration to undertake swift investigations into the incident and, for once, punish the perpetrators of such heinous crime.

?Reports available to the GJA indicate that a policeman riding on an unregistered motorbike hit a vehicle belonging to the Ghanaian Times around 8:45 am today and sped off. The policeman had allegedly jumped traffic and while meandering his way out, his motorbike hit the bumper of a Nissan saloon car belonging to the Ghanaian Times, breaking the mirror and windscreen of the car in the process. His pillion rider who saw what had happened tried to stop him, but the policeman rode on.

The driver of the Ghanaian Times vehicle then chased and managed to block the policeman around Kinbu, a few metres away from the accident scene, whereupon the reporter got off the vehicle and started video-recording the incident with his mobile phone. Angered by that action, the policeman attempted to snatch the mobile phone from the reporter and when he did not succeed, he allegedly punched the face of the reporter, as blood gushed out from his nostril. Other policemen and a soldier in uniform allegedly joined in the beatings of the reporter, pushing, kicking, slapping and punching him.

Other reporters of Ghanaian Times in the vehicle Salifu Abdul Rahaman and Raissa Sambou Ebu were also heckled, and in the process, Raissa, a nursing mother, collapsed and was rushed to the Greater Accra Regional Hospital for treatment.

According to the reports, the police officers demanded the mobile phone of the reporter and subsequently handcuffed and bundled him into a police vehicle. They then sent him to the Ministries Police Station and detained him for about four hours. The police were said to have ignored several pleas from the reporter to send him to the hospital for medical treatment.

The reporter was later brought out of the cell and allegedly dragged on the staircase to an office on the second floor where he was asked to write a statement. But he declined to do so, insisting on the presence of his lawyer before proceeding. He was then sent back into the cell, as an officer at the counter continued to hit him in the back. It took the intervention of ACP David Eklu, the Director-General of Public Affairs Directorate of the Ghana Police Service, and ASP Efia Tenge, the Accra Region Police Public Relations Officer, to save the reporter from more torture.

The GJA finds the assault by the said police officers barbaric in an era of rule of law when the police are supposed to be law enforcers rather than lawbreakers.

We call on the Police Administration to find and punish the perpetrators of this dastardly act to serve as a deterrent to others and redeem the image of the Ghana Police Service from a shameful tag of a brutish institution. This incident must not be added to the list of unresolved cases of assault against journalists by police officers. This culture of impunity must end now!

The GJA will not relent in its efforts to seek justice for all journalists who have been assaulted by police officers in the past and we call on all well-meaning Ghanaians to join us in condemnation of such barbaric conduct by the police. Twenty-seven years into our democratic dispensation, it is important for the police to appreciate that we live under the rule of law and not the rule of the jungle.

  • Kofi Adams should have petitioned CID on Atta Mills’ death – Owusu Bempah

Leader and Founder of the Glorious Word Ministry, Rev. Isaac Owusu Bempah has descended heavily on the former National Organizer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Kofi Adams for petitioning the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to investigate him (Owusu Bempah) for alleging that some NDC members are plotting to assassinate the President.

According to him Kofi Adams should first petition the CID to investigate the cause of death of late President Atta Mills because he was also the property of the state.

“Late President Mills was also the property of this country so what is preventing Kofi Adams from petitioning the CID to investigate his death?” he quizzed.

Speaking on Okay FM’s ‘Ade Akye Abia’ programme, he disclosed that he is ever ready to face Kofi Adams squarely at every level he wants to take this case to.

He indicated that he will also report Mr. Adams and NDC to provide autopsy report of the late President Atta Mills’ death.

“As a man of God what ever God revealed to me I will not keep quiet” . . . recounting how he revealed a secret plot which e eventually saved the live of President Akufo-Addo.

“I am a prophet of God who also stands by my words . . . I am ready and will face them squarely,” he stressed, saying whether the revelation came through human or spirit is not the case, but one must look at the import of the message since God always reveals to redeem.

He maintained that God has spoken and don’t want to die before talking therefore Mr. Adams should go and burn the sea.’

The Founder and leader of the Glorious Word Ministry International, Prophet Owusu Bempah has alleged that former President John Mahama and the National Democratic Congress is planning to assassinate President Akufo-Addo, Vice President Dr Bawumia, Chairman Wontumi, Kennedy Agyapong and himself.

Speaking on Oman FM’s political morning show with Akua Asabea Croppa late last month, the controversial prophet said God revealed the plot to him.

Read: The Bible knows no biased prophet like Owusu Bempah John Mahama

He went ahead to mention former President John Mahama as the person behind the assassination and further described Mahama as a ‘wicked person’.

Revealing why Mahama and the NDC want him dead he said “All Ghanaians should listen to me, I used to respect former President John Mahama the most but for today, I no longer respect him . . . if people will recall the prophecy I made towards Nigeria’s elections, I said the opposition leader will lose and this is what God revealed to me. Every pastor who predicted the election said Buhari will lose but I said he will win because it was revealed to me and I even said it in my church on Sunday before their elections”.

He stated that “The NDC have held meetings over me and I want them to know that I (Owusu Bempah), I’ve seen their plans. They’ve hired some people to kill me and also to try as much as possible to kill President Akufo-Addo, Vice President Bawumia, Kennedy Agyapong and Chairman Wontumi”.

He therefore charged Ghanaians to take his words seriously as the plot by Mahama and the NDC was revealed to him by God.

  • Were not handing over public schools to private operators Adutwum

The Ministry of Education has said the government does not intend to privatize public basic schools under the controversial Ghana Partnership School (GPS) policy.

The initiative, which sought to create a partnership between government and private entities to take over the management of some public schools, has received a lot of backlash from stakeholders in the past few weeks.

Even before the date for the implementation of the initiative, interested parties such as teacher unions have threatened a massive demonstration against the government if it proceeds with the plan.

The unions justified their opposition, saying that they had not been consulted in the planning of the project.

Read: Increase investment in public schools – GNECC to government

But speaking to Citi News, Deputy Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum said the government has no intention to hand over the management of basic schools to private individuals.

“There is no basis for what the teachers are saying. The ministry has made it clear that is not about privatization. We are not handing over public schools to private operators. We have no intention to do that, there is no policy to do that. All that we are saying is that we are exploring how we can partner with NGOs and that discussion is at the very embryonic stage. We are not even close to making a decision on it. There is no policy for GPS or privatization, if there was, it would have been public information.”

Initially, the Ministry of Education called the bluff of the teacher unions, insisting that it was going to go ahead to roll out the project to improve the standards of education in the country.

The government, however, said its decision to back down has nothing to do with the pressure from the various stakeholders.

    NAGRAT welcomes move

But President of the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), Angel Carbonu said the decision by the Education Ministry to halt the implementation of the project is welcoming.

“When I heard that government has withdrawn from the project, I was elated. I believe that when you resource our school heads and give them training, skills development program periodically and set target for them our school heads will achieve credible results. We are very happy that the project has been discontinued. We have a strong desire to achieving learning outcomes. We have the men and women well trained.”

Privatization of basic schools will fail Coalition

Earlier the Ghana National Education Campaign Coalition (GNECC) indicated that the Ghana Partnership Schools Project will fail.

The group said it has evidence to show that the policy will impact negatively on education.

Read: Public schools no longer trusted – Deputy minister justifies privatisation plan

The Coalition thus wanted the government to scrap the project which is expected to be rolled out this September.

The Chairman of the GNECC, Kofi Asare said that the government must scrap the project which was expected to be rolled out this September.

“The issues we are raising are very cogent issues and we believe that when we have a physical engagement with the Minister and his team, they will appreciate the issues we have raised. We have given alternatives too in our statement. We intend together with the teacher unions, to engage government one on one and have a discussion on this but we wanted government to know our position on this.”

  • Law students boycott special classes

Students of the Ghana School of Law (GSL) have said they will not partake in a special classes organised by the school for students who have been repeated.

The students who are unhappy with the recent mass failure in the bar examination in a statement said “we do not think that the challenges facing students of the Ghana School of Law border on teaching and learning.

“We are deeply concerned about the conduct and management of our examinations which we believe is partly responsible for the high rate of failure.”

Read: MPs give hope to distressed law students

“We are equally concerned about the repeat policy which we think is unfair resulting in a large number of students who are struggling to graduate from the school. This unfairness also finds expression in the new reforms that have reversed to the old system of repeating students who fail more than 2 out of 6 subjects in part one and more than 2 out of 4 subjects in part 2. If this policy were to apply fairly then only students who fail more than 6 out of 10 courses should be repeated.”

“Besides, the capacity of the classrooms for the special classes is far less than the over 450 students that are required to take the classes.”

“Based on the above reasons, we wish to put on record that our petition on the above grievances are before the General Legal Council, Parliament, the Council of State and the President.”

“We do not intend to indulge in any act that will be prejudicial to our efforts to seek redress to our grievances.”

Read: Law students not to blame for mass exams failure Former SRC executive

“We wish to respectfully submit that we have resolved not to participate in the Special Classes pending the determination of the issues in our petition.”

Two weeks ago, students of the school marched to parliament to petition the Speaker, Prof Mike Oquaye, to investigate why only 64 out of about 500 students passed the last bar exam.

A total of 284 students who wrote the professional law examinations in 2018 failed and will have to repeat the programme.

One hundred and seventy-seven have been referred in various papers including Evidence; and Advocacy and Family law.

He said, the Scheme had strategically been supporting government’s Flagship program “Planting for Food and Jobs”.

“We have also collaborated with the National Buffer Stock to support the Free SHS programme,” he added.

So far, yields from the farms had been packaged in branded NSS 50kg sacks and stored at the government warehouse on the farm.

Under the current management of NSS, the farms have been revamped entirely to recapture their lost glory.

Apart from the production of maize in larger quantities in Ejura and other parts of the country, the Scheme has also been able to raise about 22,000 birds from 2000 in addition to over 100 sheep and goats at the Nungua and Papao farms in Accra.

The NSS boss said, it gave him a good feeling to realise such an achievement within a short period.

Among those who visited the farm include; Deputy Executive Director Operations, Mr. Kwaku Ohene Djan, Ashanti Regional Director, Mr. Opoku Mensah, the Director of Public Relations, Mr. David Prah and other staffs of the Scheme.

Meanwhile, the Secretariat was constructing fence well for the Ejura government hospital.

The Scheme is currently constructing a fence wall for the Ejura Government Hospital and has also promised to construct mechanised boreholes for the hospital as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility.
