  • Akufo-Addo is responsible for our hardship, he deceived voters – Dr. Apaak

Member of Parliament for Builsa South, Dr. Clement Apaak, has descended heavily on President Akufo-Addo for worsening the plight of citizens.

He believes the president should be held accountable for the hardships Ghanaians are faced with.

He slammed government for failing to fulfill its campaign promises of fuel reduction, stabilisation of the cedi against major currencies, reduction in cost of doing business among others. What Ghanaians are witnessing is a direct opposite what they promised, he said.

Read: Akufo-Addo sacking his perceived enemies Kwaku Boahen

He went ahead to take a swipe at the president for failing to show positive results after appointing 111 ministers.

He went ahead to touch on job losses across all sectors of the economy and suggested citizens are worse off today under the NPP.

    Read below his post:

Folks, Prez NADAA is responsible for the hardship in Ghana, no one else. The coming increase in talk tax as the Telecos have announced, like many other tax increases, didn’t fall from the sky, its NADAA and his NPP policy!

Has Ghana been moved from taxation to productivity? Have fuel prices gone down? Is the cedi doing better? Has the cost of doing business in Ghana improved?

Read: Times are hard indeed! Ghanaian express their grievances

The AGI is complaining, the Ashante Business Association is complaining, Importers and Exporters are complaining, Abosokai spare parts dealers are complaining, Students are complaining!

Media houses, banks and others private sector employers are laying off workers!

Are Ghanaians better of today? NO! Those enjoying are family and friends of NADAA, the 111 Ministers, thier several aides and assistants, the over 1000 Presidential Staffers, the heads of Agencies, CEOs and thier bus loads of aides and assistants!

Mess here, mess there, mess everywhere!

    The solution is to #GO4JM!

  • The most famous black man in South Korea is a Ghanaian

When Sam Okyere arrived in South Korea to study, he was met with racism. But he found a way to transform his negative experiences into positive ones, making a name for himself as a popular television personality.

To many viewers in South Korea, Sam’s singing voice is hugely familiar. You can find him on some of the country’s most famous variety shows and he even has his own radio slot. He raps in English and South Korean and sometimes in his native Ghanaian language Twi. Although he was born and raised in Ghana, he has recently become known as ‘the most famous black man of South Korea.’

Sam can hardly walk the streets of Seoul without being stopped by people asking for autographs. Luckily it is relatively quiet at the juice bar in the popular downtown shopping district of the capital where he agrees to meet.

“It’s crazy,” he explains. “There are times that I have to wear a hat and a mask. People from different age groups are coming up to me. I have got grandmas coming up to me, I’ve got babies coming up to me, young adults, high schoolers, people from different age ranges coming up to me asking for autographs. If somebody would have told me a couple of years ago that that would happen, I would have said: No, that’s not possible.”

Sam first set foot on Korean soil nine years ago. Back then he faced a totally different reality. Sam moved from Ghana to Korea as part of a scholarship to study computer engineering. In the beginning, life here wasn’t so easy.

“Of course at that time, Koreans were not as open to different types of people from different places, they were not so exposed to different races and different cultures.” As someone who hadn’t really experienced racism previously, he says it was difficult for him to comprehend. “People would openly come up to you and say really bad stuff like You black monkey, go back to where you come from.’ And sometimes you go to a place and people don’t want to sit next to you. Like, that was heart-breaking.”

Sam says he really wasn’t prepared for this kind of treatment.

“I was like, wow! It really hit me for the first time that racism is real,” Sam elaborates. “It was always sort of a concept that didn’t really exist for me. I read about it but never experienced it until I came to Korea. So that really opened my eyes to what racism is.”

South-Korea is one of the most ethnically homogeneous countries in the world. Over 99 percent of South Koreans identify as ethnically Korean. Foreigners have only begun moving to the peninsula very recently. Sam thinks that that is one of the explanations for the racism. “In a way, because they are not used to that, they get intimidated and the reaction that they have makes them appear to be racist,” he says. “But sometimes it is not that, it’s just mere ignorance and lack of exposure.”

At first Sam was very frustrated by this treatment. But he realized that wasn’t going to help him in the long run. He knew it was pointless getting angry and trying to fight back. He decided to learn the language because language is always a vital part of settling in to a new culture. And so he set to work.

“Once you learn the language, you feel like you’re a part of the people and the people feel like you’re a part of them. Learning Korean really was the difference between my black friend Sam’ and my friend Sam’,” he says smiling.

Once he had mastered the language, he quickly made lots of Korean friends. But his life really started to change when he entered the Korean entertainment business. He started off with small roles in commercials but he eventually got his big break on a variety show called ‘Abnormal Summit.’ After this, he appeared in more variety shows, got roles in TV and now even has his own radio show. At first he was surprised, then pleased, to discover that he had become popular.

As his fame grew, Sam decided to use this platform to start addressing the problem of racism on national TV. Speaking in fluent Korean he told a story about the day when a lady on the bus raced towards him and took the empty seat that he was about to sit in. She blocked him with her legs, while swearing at him and telling him to “go back to his country.” He quickly realized this was a form of blatant discrimination.

His story had the desired effect and touched the hearts of many South Koreans. He says for most people it was a wake-up call.

“So many people wrote to me, saying: Thank you for mentioning this, I feel like we are living in a bubble, but now we really understand that it is real, now that you’ve spoken about your experiences we can see it from your perspective.’ And I felt like it was such an important and iconic moment on Korean television. Because it was the first time something like that was spoken about openly and honestly.”

Korean society is not used to dealing with these kinds of issues openly so Sam really noticed the difference before and after he decided to speak out. In the last nine years, an increasing number of black and ethnically diverse people have made their home in South Korea.

Sam explains that lots of young Koreans have written to him telling him that their perception of Africa — or Ghana or even black people — has changed because of him. He tells another story to illustrate how deeply ingrained attitudes about the beauty of pale skin in Korea are slowly changing.

“I remember a few weeks ago I did a show and this old Korean was like: ‘Oh my god, your skin is so dark, you must have been in the sun too long, apply something on it to make it lighter.’ But there was one old lady that said: ‘No don’t do it, your skin is beautiful the way it is. God made you like this.’ And I was so touched! I was like, wow, this is so unbelievable, a Korean telling me your black skin is beautiful, don’t change it for anyone, I love it… You know, people are really getting the message.”

And he smiles broadly before he ducks back out into the crowd of adoring fans.

  • Nigeria curfew after kidnapped chief’s death

A 24-hour curfew has been reinstated in the Nigerian state of Kaduna from 11:00 local time on Friday following the death of a prominent traditional chief, who was abducted amid communal violence last week.

Maiwada Raphael Galadima, the Agom Adara (the traditional leader of the Adara people), was abducted last Friday after visiting the town of Kasuwan Magani, which had just witnessed clashes between Muslim and Christian youths at its market.

  • Kotoko are not ready for CAF inter-club competitions- Pollack

Asante Kotoko former coach Steve Pollack believes the club is not ready to participate in the Caf inter-club competitions, amid the team’s petition to Ghana football’s Normalisation Committee for clearance to play in Africa.

The Porcupine Warriors officially petitioned the committee this week to rescind the decision agreed upon by club representatives not to allow any Ghanaian side to participate in either the Caf Champions League or the Caf Confederation Cup.

The Briton is worried that lack of competitive games in Ghana following the suspension of the topflight will expose his former side.

“I know Kotoko have signed new players and some have also left after my departure. They may be thinking that these are signs of readiness to participate in Caf inter-club competitions but I disagree,” Polack told Kumasi FM.

“At the moment, Kotoko are not playing any competitive games or high-profile friendlies with foreign clubs every week in and out so they are not adequately prepared.

Read: Allow Kotoko to go to Africa Bechem CEO

“I believe they must take a second look at their decision because you can’t only use friendly games to prepare for such competitions that demands a lot of work,” he added.

Polack led Kotoko to the 2017-18 Confederation Cup but were eliminated in the first round by Congolese side CARA Brazzaville who went on to reach the quarterfinals.

  • New Regions: Dan Botwe baffled by Togbe Afede’s baseless comments

The Ministry of Regional Reorganisation and Development says it is baffled by the ‘baseless comments’ of the Agbogbomefia of the Asogli State and President of the National House of Chiefs, Togbe Afede XIV which suggested that “shoddy work” was done by the Commission of Inquiry which explored the creation of new regions.

According to a statement signed by the Minister of Regional Reorganisation and Development, Mr Dan Botwe, the Commission adhered strictly to the provisions outlined in the 1992 Constitution of Ghana relating to the creation of regions stressing that the comments of Togbe Afede be disregarded.

Listing nine consultative sessions which the Commission held between May 2017 and January 2018 and had Togbe Afede in attendance, the Ministry said it was baffled by the traditional ruler’s comments because he was consulted “perhaps more than any other Ghanaian on the creation of regions”.

  • NPA doesn’t set fuel prices at pump – Hassan Tampuli

The Chief Executive Officer of the National Petroleum Authority(NPA) Hassan Tampuli says the authority and for that matter government cannot be blamed for the recent fuel hikes in the price of petrol and diesel.

He argued that the role of determining fuel prices at the pump was taken away from the Authority in 2015 after the amendment of the price deregulation policy, Regulation 14 of L.I. 2186.

The industry pricing regime is now determined through the open market system, limiting the mandate of the NPA in influencing pump prices.

Read: NPA stops over 90% of fuel diversions

“Following the implementation of the price deregulation policy in July 2015, the responsibility of setting ex-pump prices of petroleum products shifted from the Authority to petroleum service providers (i.e., Bulk Distribution Companies (BDCs) OMCs). The only products whose prices are still determined by the Authority are Residual Fuel Oil (RFO), Premix Fuel, Aviation Turbine Kerosene (ATK), Gasoil Mines, Marine Gasoil Foreign and Gasoil Rig,” he emphasized.

Mr Tampuli therefore believes that it is unfair for Ghanaians to constantly lambast the authority anytime there is increment in fuel prices.

Read: Fuel prices up again; NPA blames international market

Addressing stakeholders at a forum in Accra, NPA CEO used the occasion to call on the stakeholders present at the forum to assist his outfit in educating the public on the factors that influence the pricing at the pumps and the mandate of the NPA.

Meanwhile, Mr Tampuli is assuring motorists to brace themselves for some good news in the coming pricing window as he hints of a possible reduction in fuel prices.

Read: No fuel shortage NPA assures public

“The consuming public should rest assured, that the benefits of the falling price of products on the international market as we have observed, will be felt in the next pricing window. As of today, the Ghana Cedi has made some gains against the United States Dollar and the nearly 2% decrease in the price of diesel and petrol as well as the observed 8% decrease in the price of LPG will be passed on to the public through pump prices, all things being equal. That is how a deregulated market works,” Hassan Tampuli highlighted.

  • Alabi is the solution to NDC’s problems – Victor Gbeho

Former Ghanaian Ambassador to the UN, James Victor Gbeho, has asked the delegates of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to vote massively for Professor Joshua Alabi, to solve the problems of the party and the country.

Read: Reckless attacks on Akufo-Addo needless Alabi

Ambassador Gbeho is of the view that Professor Alabi has the credibility and the blue print to unite the party, inspire the grassroots to work harder and redeem the NDC from opposition, by returning the party into government in 2021.

He said: “I am introducing to you a man who has impeccable qualities, high credibility, an in-depth understanding of the issues, has discernment, the leadership skills and above all the solutions to beat the NPP in 2020.”

Read: Vote for me to take care of you Alabi to NDC delegates

Ambassador Gbeho who is a former President of the ECOWAS Commission made these comments in Aburi, when he was addressing NDC delegates in the Akwapim South constituency.

“We sat down, discussed why and how we came to opposition, then we analysed all the materials we have now. And we came to the conclusion that, Joshua is our only hope to the promised land,” the former Foreign Affairs Minister said to an excited crowd who cheered in response.

“If we make a mistake of losing Joshua, we will only end up extending our period of complaining about our government and party leadership,” he cautioned.

Read: I will empower NDC grassproots Joshua Alabi

Ambassador Victor Gbeho who spoke in Twi, surprised the delegates with his linguistics and connection to Aburi where he explained he had lived there at some point in time as a child.

The former MP for Anlo Constituency in the Volta Region, had taken his turn to introduce Prof Joshua Alabi to the NDC branch and constituency executives gathered in the town hall.

Prof Alabi was in Aburi as part of his tour of the Eastern Region and earlier made a stop at the palace of the Aburihene to go pay homage.

He was well received by the Paramount Chief, Otoobuor Djan Kwasi II and his elders and queen mothers.

  • Fifa proposes a new annual Club World Cup featuring top European teams

A new and expanded Club World Cup – held every year featuring some of the Premier League and Europe’s top clubs – has been proposed by Fifa.

In official documents seen by the BBC, there are two options for an annual tournament, alongside the original plan for a competition every four years.

Fifa’s ruling council will decide whether and how to proceed when it meets in Rwanda on Thursday and Friday.

Read: Man Utd to contest Mourinho charge

Uefa is expected to vote against the plans.

The Club World Cup is currently held every December and features seven teams from six confederations.

Earlier this year, Fifa president Gianni Infantino proposed expanding it to 24 teams, including 12 from Europe, with the competition to be staged every four years.

Opposition to the plans from Fifa Council members – including Uefa president Aleksander Ceferin – resulted in talks being suspended shortly before the start of the World Cup in June.

    What’s on the table?

Both options being put forward would see the current Club World Cup and Confederations Cup abolished, with a new and expanded Club World Cup set up.

Proposal 1: Stage it in place of the Confederations Cup, an eight-nation tournament held in June the year before each World Cup.

Proposal 2: Same plan – but also including options for a yearly competition held either as a pre-season tournament in July to August or in another time slot. In each case, the competition format, number of teams and division of places between each confederation are yet to be determined, but it will last a maximum of 18 days.

    And another Nations League?

Fifa also wants to introduce a new global Nations League based on the format of Uefa’s Nations League, which started in September.

The new Club World Cup and global Nations League would be projected to generate $25bn (£17.9bn) in revenue, with the investment coming from a consortium led by Japan’s SoftBank,

But with Fifa facing scrutiny over potential financial links with Saudi Arabia, the documents outline how the organisation “would not enter into a joint venture for this purpose, whether directly or indirectly, with sovereign wealth funds of individual states”.

The Fifa Council will vote this week on whether to introduce a Nations League including countries from across the world from 2022.

However, it will also decide whether organising and commercialising that competition is Fifa’s responsibility.

    Who is for and against?

In the documents, Fifa said that at meetings in April and May, leading European clubs agreed the Club World Cup needed to be revamped and expanded, and expressed a desire to play in the new competition.

It added that world players’ union FIFPro was positive about a new Club World Cup, provided player health was considered.

However, the European Club Association (ECA), which represents Europe’s biggest teams, has opposed the plans.

And the World Leagues Forum – which represents 38 professional leagues including the Premier League, La Liga and Serie A – also stated its opposition to changing the current format of the Club World Cup.

  • Western Nzema Traditional Council bans 2018 Kundum festival

The Western Nzema Traditional Council (WNTC), has placed a ban on the celebration of this year’s Kundum festival by the chiefs and people in the Jomoro Municipality.

The ban follows a resolution by the Traditional Council at the second quarterly General Meeting of all the 46 chiefs of Western Nzema Traditional Council, who jointly agreed that the 2018 Kundum festival shall not be celebrated and same was unanimously confirmed at the third quarterly General Meeting at Beyin.

Read: Tight security at Apremdo as riots erupt over festival

A Resolution signed by the Omanhene/President of the Western Nzema Traditional Council, Awulae Annor Adjaye 111 and copied to the Ghana News Agency, indicated that the ban would afford the council the opportunity to prepare adequately to celebrate the 2019 Kundum festival in a grand style.

He explained that palanquins to host the various chiefs in their respective communities were not available, hence the WNTC would redouble its efforts to procure more towards next year’s celebration.

“The 2019 Kundum Festival shall be officially celebrated in every town and community with all Chiefs and Queens being carried in Palanquins. Funds raised in each community shall be used for specific development projects”.

The resolution said “it is at the tail end of the celebration that Nananom shall converge at Beyin, the seat of the Paramount Chief to close the entire event”.

It said the arrangement had become important because the annual celebration of the festival is losing its cultural vibrancy and impact on the various communities with much attention extended mainly to the celebration at the Paramountcy level.

The resolution cautioned that “this trend is not culturally healthy for the Western Nzema state which must stop” forthwith.

Awulae Annor Adjaye entreated all the chiefs to comply with the resolution to avoid any loss of life and property as it had occurred in the Ahanta area.

Kundum is an annual festival of the Chiefs and people of Ahanta and Nzema which is normally celebrated every year to usher in bumper harvest starting from Essikado through all Ahanta towns to Axim to Adoabo and to sub-stools and finally ending up in Beyin.

At the end of the Western Nzema celebrations, the migrant Nzemas in Grand Bassam in La Cote D’Ivoire also start and complete the grand festival.

Since 1990 when Awulae Annor Adjaye 111 mounted the Western Nzema Paramount Stool, this festival has continuously been celebrated with the active involvement of the Nvavile Family who mainly performs the rites for the launching and closure of the festival every year, unless there is a major disaster or otherwise.

  • Salah double helps Liverpool to win over Red Star

Mohamed Salah scored twice to reach a half-century of Liverpool goals in a comfortable victory over Red Star Belgrade in the Champions League.

It was a dominant display from the hosts, Roberto Firmino firing in Andy Robertson’s cut-back on 20 minutes.

Salah got his first just before the break then added a second with a penalty won by Sadio Mane.

And Mane slotted a fourth goal with 10 minutes to go after missing another penalty just moments before.

Goalscorers aside, Xherdan Shaqiri proved influential for the hosts – an excellent through ball to Robertson helped set up Firmino’s opener and it was the Swiss player’s flick that then assisted Salah’s first goal.

Firmino, one of five players back in the starting line-up after a depleted Reds side narrowly beat Huddersfield in the league on Saturday, marked his return with his 13th goal in 18 Champions League appearances for the club and his 10th in eight games at Anfield.

Mane was also bright – he linked up well with Salah on numerous occasions and earned his side’s first penalty when he got an arm in the face from Red Star captain Filip Stojkovic.

He made up for missing the second penalty – won when El Fardou Ben handled in the area – by sliding in to poke into the bottom corner to make it 4-0, before substitute Adam Lallana was denied a fifth from close range.

For the visitors, Srdan Babic wasted an opportunity from a set-piece when he fired over the bar but Liverpool were dominant throughout and never looked like conceding.

Red Star, bottom of the group with one point from three games, were banned from selling tickets to supporters for the game at Anfield after incidents during and after their team’s play-off round tie away to RB Salzburg on 29 August.

  • John Mahama ‘masterminded’ chaos at KNUST – Wontumi alleges

Ashanti Regional Chairman for the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako affectionately called Chairman Wontumi has accused former President John Mahama as the brain behind the recent chaos at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).

According to him, the unrest at the University is as a result of the Vice Chancellor’s exhibition of poor leadership backed by political influence from former President Mahama.

His comments comes on the heels of the tension that erupted at the KNUST which resulted in the destruction of both private and public properties by students following the brutalization of some students by the school’s security personnel for disregarding school directives.

Read: KNUST impasse: Stay away from unguarded statements UTAG warns politicians

Speaking with Boamah Darko on the ‘Maakye’ morning show on Hot FM, Chairman Wontumi who condemned the behaviour of the students also believes the violent acts exhibited by the students was generated by the school authorities decision to convert all traditional halls into mixed halls without proper stakeholders consultation, an act he defines as a political agenda by the Vice Chancellor and fueled by John Mahama.

“I went to school at Prempeh College and we know it is traditionally a boys school, so when the decision comes for Prempeh college to convert into a mixed school, it will not be anything bad except that, such a decision should be consulted properly with the student body and and all stakeholders in order to prevent indifference and misunderstanding as we are witnessing now at KNUST and a university has major stakeholders who needs to be included in all decision making concerning the school so it is not a place for a single person or body to be autocratic although I do not blame anyone but John Mahama who wants to do whatever it takes to use his political influence to cause confusion in schools.”

“He is the one behind the Vice Chancellor’s conducts which has now escalated. I do not support violence so I condemn what the destruction the students caused but their behaviour was clearly due to the sole decision of the university authorities to convert a single hall into a mixed one even after there was fierce opposition from the students” He noted.

Read: Akufo-Addo to blame for KNUST violence Mahama camp

He however added that he was going to stage a demonstration to seek for the dismissal of the Vice Chancellor if he does not resign from his post.

“The Vice Chancellor should resign because if not for the involvement of the regional minister or REGSEC things would have gotten worse, so as the school has been shut down it would be prudent for the vice chancellor to resign since all these happened due to his using his work for political purposes.”

Meanwhile in a swift rebuttal, a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and former Ashanti Regional Minister Joseph Yamin could not fathom why Chairman Wontumi would blame John Mahama for the university authority and the government’s failure to address the issue from the start.

“The most prudent thing to do is for the regional minister and REGSEC members to resign since they were to ensure security in the school when the students made their intention to demonstrate public so when you create all these lapses and turn around to blame John Mahama, then that is sad,” he said.

  • Ghanaians to benefit from drop in world crude prices; appreciation of cedi soon – NPA boss

Motorists should brace themselves for some good news in the coming pricing window as the National Petroleum Authority hints of a possible reduction in fuel prices.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Authority, Hassan Tampuli has suggested that the current trend being witnessed on the market has given a positive indication and is likely to result in prices at the pumps going down.

Hassan Tampuli singled out the recent appreciation of the Ghana Cedi against its major trading currencies especially the dollar and the fall in world crude prices as major developments which will influence the prices at the pumps in the coming window.

The NPA CEO asserted that if the situation remains the same then motorists should rest assured of a possible reduction that will ease the burden on them.

Read: Fuel price hikes not what you promised TUC berates government

Addressing stakeholders of the downstream industry, Hassan Tampuli charged stakeholders to constantly monitor the components that influence the prices as they are updated on the NPA website to ensure that everyone is on the same page at every point in time.

He stated in his speech that “to further keep all stakeholders informed of expected changes in prices of petroleum products for every window, the Authority publishes “Daily Price Indicators” on its website and a number of newspapers. The Daily Price Indicators shows the changes in the key components on the price build-up such as the GHS/USD exchange rate and the international prices of petroleum products. These components vary every pricing window and directly affect domestic prices. This can be accessed on the Homepage of the Authority website: http://www.Authority.gov.gh/”.

Help us educate public on price build-up – NPA boss to stakeholders

The NPA CEO also called on stakeholders present at the forum to assist his outfit in educating the public on the factors that influence the pricing at the pumps and the mandate of the NPA.

He explained that the role of determining fuel prices at the pump was taken away from the Authority in 2015 after the amendment of the price deregulation policy, Regulation 14 of L.I. 2186.

The industry pricing regime is now determined through the open market system, limiting the mandate of the NPA in influencing pump prices.

NPA, Hassan Tampuli stressed, only determines prices of Aviation Turbine Kerosine, Gasoil Mines, Marine Gasoil, Premix Fuel and Residual Fuel Oil (RFO).

“Adjustment of prices of petroleum products by Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) this week for the 16th 31st October pricing window and the reaction by some interest groups reminds all of us that there is a lot more we all have to do to educate the general public on the tenets of a deregulated industry and its ramifications,” the CEO pleaded.

“Following the implementation of the price deregulation policy in July 2015, the responsibility of setting ex-pump prices of petroleum products shifted from the Authority to petroleum service providers (i.e., Bulk Distribution Companies (BDCs) OMCs). The only products whose prices are still determined by the Authority are Residual Fuel Oil (RFO), Premix Fuel, Aviation Turbine Kerosene (ATK), Gasoil Mines, Marine Gasoil Foreign and Gasoil Rig,” he outlined.
