  • Casford Hall chickens out of Katanga solidarity after threat by UCC

Students of the Casford Hall at the University of Cape Coast have called off their planned solidarity action in support of their colleague students of the Katanga Hall of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in their standoff with the school authorities.

The decision by the students was taken after they reportedly received threats from the authorities of their university.

The leadership of Casford hall in a tweet that accompanied the declaration of red Wednesday said: “#Casfordgoesred Freedom and Justice”.

Meanwhile, a high-powered delegation of ministers has been dispatched to KNUST by President Akufo-Addo to ascertain the cause of the chaos that occurred on the campus on Monday. The delegation led by the Education minister Mathew Opoku Premeh is to meet the school authorities and the leadership of the student body over the impasse.

The students who were angered over what they described as brutalities meted out to them by the authorities went on rampage destroying several school properties including vehicles of lecturers.

The sector Minister, Dr Owusu Afriyie Akoto, announced this in Sunyani after presenting 100 motorbikes to the Brong Ahafo Regional Directorate of the ministry.

The minister, who made the presentation during his two-day visit to the region last Monday, said MoFA, with support from the Canadian Government, had, within the past six months, also distributed 216 vehicles to agricultural extension directors.

Dr Akoto said the government had also given approval for the recruitment of 2,700 extension officers to offer support to farmers to boost production.

He said the government was determined to increase the number of extension officers and provide them with the requisite tools to reach out to smallholder farmers.

According to the minister, the presentation of the motorbikes and other interventions in the sector by the government were meant to ensure the success of the Planting for Food and Jobs programme.

He said the number of registered farmers under the programme had increased from 200,000 last year to 500,000 this year.

    Interactions

Interacting with poultry and maize farmers and dealers at Wamfie in the Dormaa East District in the Brong Ahafo Region, Dr Akoto promised to construct a poultry processing factory in the area.

He said the government was also constructing about 30 warehouses across the country to enable farmers to store their produce.

The minister, therefore, urged the farmers to work harmoniously together and support one another for increased production.

    Implementation

The Brong Ahafo Regional Minister-designate, Mr Evans Opoku-Bobbie, said the region had been active in the implementation of the Planting for Food and Jobs programme.

He expressed the hope that the interest would be translated into increased yields.

For his part, the acting Regional Director of the MoFA, Mr Hassan Donkor, said female participation in agriculture in the region had also improved.

The Spanish international has established himself as a key player for the Blues since joining from Fiorentina in 2016.

After putting pen to paper on his new deal, the 27-year-old said: “I am so happy to stay here longer and to keep playing for one of the best teams in the world. It’s been a very good two seasons and I am looking forward to more.”

Read: Chelsea offer Willian new deal amid Barcelona, Manchester United speculation.

Alonso played at left wing-back under Antonio Conte and has successfully transitioned to left-back in a back four under Maurizio Sarri.

Speaking in September, Sarri said: “Alonso I think at the moment in this position, left-back, he is maybe the best in Europe.

“Physical qualities at top level, I think. He’s doing very well in the offensive phase. I also think he can improve in the defensive phase. He could be the best left-back in the world.”

  • Cristiano Ronaldo’s Manchester United return assessed as he helps Juventus to victory

Cristiano Ronaldo returned to Old Trafford under a cloud but out on the pitch his presence was a reminder of what Manchester United lack…

Several minutes had passed since the final whistle and most of the players had already disappeared down the tunnel when two young Manchester United fans decided to try their luck. One after the other, and from different corners of Old Trafford, they jumped over the advertising hoardings and hurtled towards Cristiano Ronaldo.

Read: Juventus set to sign Cristiano Ronaldo

Both were mobbed by security guards before they could reach him, but not before the first had pulled a mobile phone from his pocket. Ronaldo took it from him and happily obliged with a selfie, drawing cheers from the stands. Having earlier created the goal which gave Juventus their 1-0 win, yes, it is fair to say he enjoyed his return to Old Trafford.

Ronaldo takes a selfie with a pitch invader

The 33-year-old had struck a defiant tone on the eve of the game, reiterating his denial of the rape allegation levelled against him and defending his reputation. What happens next in that case remains to be seen, but what is certain is that it did not distract him from the task at hand. This was not Ronaldo at his blistering best. But he was still instrumental in the win.

Read: Modric: Ronaldo, Messi out of this world but my season deserved recognition

Ronaldo’s reception was not on the same level as the one he received when he returned to Old Trafford for the first time in 2013, but he was still loudly cheered when the teams were read out before kick-off. Outside the stadium, fans could be seen snapping up replica scarves bearing his name from opportunistic merchandise vendors.

“He will always be a huge player for us,” said one season-ticket holder milling about near the Sir Matt Busby statue outside the East Stand.

Ronaldo looked around his old home and smiled broadly as he stepped out onto the pitch with his team-mates, and from the first whistle he looked at it. In the sixth minute, there was smart footwork as he turned away from Ashley Young and drew the first of many fouls. Soon after that, he provided a glimpse of his old pace as he beat the same man to a loose ball.

Ronaldo’s starting position was on the left, but he was given licence to swap positions with Paulo Dybala and Juan Cuadrado, and it was from the right that he set up the goal. Chris Smalling could not get enough on his wicked, near-post cross and the loose ball fell to Dybala, who finished coolly past the exposed David de Gea from close range.

Read: Cristiano Ronaldo rape allegation: Footballer denies attack

Ronaldo came close to scoring himself soon after half-time, forcing an acrobatic save from De Gea with a rising drive from 18 yards out, but his performance was more a story of maturity and, believe it or not, teamwork. He only misplaced three of his 35 passes. There were stepovers but there was also sensibleness. He helped retain possession with the ball and ran the channels willingly without it.

While Ronaldo and his fellow Juve forwards shone, United’s floundered.

For Lukaku, it was an eighth consecutive game without a goal and further proof he struggles against the top sides. Leonardo Bonucci and Giorgio Chiellini are formidable opponents – Mourinho joked they should give centre-back classes at Harvard University after the game – but it was still damning his first and only shot came in the 83rd minute.

Marcus Rashford struggled to make an impact

Marcus Rashford struggled to make an impact

Either side of him, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial fared little better.

A darting dribble into the box by Rashford was a rare moment of individual inspiration in the first half, but there was little else from him to get fans off their feet. At the break, he had only completed three passes. By the end of the game, he had not had a single shot on goal.

Martial offered slightly more in that regard, forcing Wojciech Szczesny into a rare save in the closing stages, but on the only occasion he made it in behind the Juventus defence, Bonucci was there to snuff out the danger with a precise sliding tackle. Paul Pogba struck the post soon after that, but United finished the game with six shots to Juve’s 14.

Their attacking issues were compounded by a lack of alternatives on the bench. Alexis Sanchez, the latest in a long line of players to have struggled since taking on Ronaldo’s No 7 shirt, was out with an injury, and with Jesse Lingard and Marouane Fellaini also absent, Mourinho’s only attacking option was untested 18-year-old Tahith Chong.

    Ronaldo celebrates with Paulo Dybala

Mourinho defended the misfiring Lukaku in his post-match press conference, describing him as a “fantastic professional who wants to give everything for the team”, but the Belgian’s disappointing performance, together with those of Rashford and Martial, contrasted sharply with Ronaldo’s purposeful and professional display for Juventus.

The Portuguese has found himself in the eye of a storm off the pitch, but he is unaffected on it and his ability to consistently influence the big occasions evidently remains. It is almost a decade since his departure, but this return to Old Trafford was a reminder of what United are missing. The pitch invaders after the final whistle suggest the fans know it, too.

  • Trump calls Khashoggi murder ‘worst cover-up in history’

US President Donald Trump has called Saudi Arabia’s response to the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi “the worst cover-up ever”.

He added that whoever organised the plot “should be in big trouble”.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said, shortly afterwards, that the US “will punish those responsible” and is revoking visas of 21 identified suspects.

The US has faced pressure to toughen its stance on Saudi Arabia, a key ally.

Read: Trump vows to cut aid over migrant caravan

Speaking to reporters at the White House, Mr Trump said: “They had a very bad original concept, it was carried out poorly and the cover up was the worst in the history of cover-ups.”

“Where it should have stopped is at the deal standpoint, when they thought about it,” he continued. “Because whoever thought of that idea, I think is in big trouble. And they should be in big trouble.”

The Saudi kingdom has provided conflicting accounts of what happened to Khashoggi, a US resident and Washington Post contributor. After weeks of maintaining he was still alive, the authorities now say the 59-year-old was killed in a rogue operation after visiting the Saudi consulate in Turkey.

In a news conference at the State Department in Washington, Mr Pompeo said that he and the president were “not happy with the situation”.

“We’re making very clear that the United States does not tolerate this ruthless action to silence Khashoggi, a journalist, through violence,” he said.

When asked whether the US would accept Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s explanation of the incident, Mr Pompeo said: “We’re going to accept what America learns.”

“We have people working all across the world to put our own understanding together. We have to develop our own data set. We will learn the facts ourselves.”

Earlier on Tuesday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan told MPs from his ruling party that the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi was planned days in advance.

He said Turkey had strong evidence Khashoggi was killed in a premeditated and “savage” murder at the consulate in Istanbul on 2 October.

He also called for the suspects to be tried in Istanbul.

Mr Erdogan’s address coincided with the start of an investment conference in Saudi Arabia that has been overshadowed by the Khashoggi case. Dozens of government and business leaders have pulled out, but Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman appeared at the event on Tuesday.

Many world leaders have condemned the murder of the prominent Saudi critic and demanded a full investigation.

While Mr Trump has ramped up his criticisms of Saudi officials, he has also highlighted the kingdom’s importance as a US ally. CIA director Gina Haspel has been sent to Turkey to review the matter.

    Where do the Saudis stand?

King Salman chaired a cabinet meeting on Tuesday, after which a statement said that Saudi Arabia would hold to account those responsible for the killing, whoever they might be.

State media also said the king and the crown prince had held a meeting in Riyadh with members of the Khashoggi family, including Khashoggi’s son, Salah bin Jamal.

Saudi Arabia has given conflicting accounts up to now, initially saying Khashoggi had left the building alive, then later saying that he had been killed in a “fist-fight” inside the consulate.

On Sunday, the Saudi foreign minister acknowledged Khashoggi had been murdered but said the leadership had not been aware of the “rogue operation”.

“The individuals who did this did this outside the scope of their authority,” Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir told Fox News. “There obviously was a tremendous mistake made, and what compounded the mistake was the attempt to try to cover up.”

He said that Saudi Arabia did not know where the body was.

An unnamed Saudi official told Reuters news agency on Sunday that Khashoggi had died in a chokehold after resisting attempts to return him to Saudi Arabia. His body was then rolled in a rug and given to a local “co-operator” to dispose of.

In addition to the arrests, the Saudis say they have sacked two of the crown prince’s aides and set up an organisation, under his leadership, to reform the intelligence agency over the killing.

According to Reuters news agency, quoting Turkish and Arabic intelligence sources, one of the sacked aides appeared via Skype during Khashoggi’s questioning. Saud al-Qahtani was quoted as giving the instructions “bring me the head of the dog”, after the two men traded insults.

The sources say President Erdogan has a copy of the Skype audio but is refusing to hand it over to the US.

  • Self-driving school bus test halted in US

French-based transport firm Transdev has been ordered to stop an “unlawful” test of a driverless school bus in Florida by US regulators.

The regulator said the firm had not been authorised to transport schoolchildren in Florida, and said the test was “irresponsible” and “inappropriate”.

Transdev said it would stop the test a week early.

The firm said it believed the pilot met testing requirements.

Read: UN concerned about Boko Haram attacks

But the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said the test of the EZ10 Generation II driverless shuttle in the Babcock Ranch community in Florida was outside the scope of what the firm had been authorised to do.

“Innovation must not come at the risk of public safety,” Heidi King, NHTSA deputy administrator said in a statement on Monday.

“Using a non-compliant test vehicle to transport children is irresponsible, inappropriate, and in direct violation of the terms of Transdev’s approved test project,” she added.

The NHTSA said it had given Transdev permission in March to import the driverless shuttle on a temporary basis for testing and demonstration purposes, but not as a school bus.

The regulator said it had sent a letter to the firm ordering it to “immediately stop transporting schoolchildren” or risk fines, “the voiding of the temporary importation authorisation, and/or the exportation of the vehicle”.

Transdev said it had voluntarily agreed to stop the test and that the “small pilot was operating safely, without any issues, in a highly controlled environment”.

The company said it believed the pilot met the requirements of the testing and demonstration project approved by NHTSA for adults and children to ride on the same route.

It added that it did not sacrifice safety for progress, would never do so, and was committed to complying with regulations.

In August the firm said the fully electric shuttle for 12 people, which would operate with a safety attendant, had a top speed of 8mph, with a potential of reaching 30mph.

Transdev North America is a unit of Transdev, which is controlled by French state-owned investment fund Caisse des Depots et Consignations.

There are a number of low-speed, self-driving shuttles being tested in cities around the world with others planned.

In November 2017, a self-driving shuttle bus in Las Vegas was involved in a crash on its first day of service, which police said was the fault of the human driver of a lorry.

  • Any Chinese who goes against the law must be punished – Chinese professor

The Director of the Centre for African Studies at the Peking University, Professor Anshan Li, has said that there were bound to be challenges as China and Africa seek to deepen their relationship in all endeavours.

He said he had heard about the problem of some Chinese engaged in illegal mining in Ghana for instance and expects the laws of the country to deal with them.

“Any Chinese who goes against the law must be punished”, he emphasised.

Professor Li advised that “both sides also need to sit and find bilateral solutions to the problems “.

Professor Li was speaking at the 2018 seminar for renowned commentators and columnists of major media organisations for African countries in China on Friday.

Read: 2 Chinese killed at Wassa Akropong

The lecture was on “The role of the media in China-Africa relations”.

He said that in the same way that there were many biased views about Africans among the Chinese, so were there such views among Africans about the Chinese adding that stereotyping was not healthy for relationships and called on the media to help the situation through positive reportage.

He explained that the bias had been mainly caused by ethnocentrism and ignorance.

“We must make use of the media to achieve our goal, guard our sovereignty, keep a stable social environment, promote our economic development and maintain our value system and cultural heritage”, he recommended.

According to him, China and Africa had similar historical experiences and that had aided the fast development of their relationship with a trade volume with Africa of $220 billion as of 2014.

He noted that the impact of affordable Chinese goods had resulted in mutual benefits as some Africans are now able to afford new shoes and clothing instead of second hand ones from the west.

  • We will ‘bite hard’, name and shame tax evaders – GRA

Commissioner General of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), Emmanuel Kofi Nti, has reiterated the Authority’s commitment to reprimanding tax evaders, no matter their status in society.

He cautioned the public, especially workers in the informal sector, to restrain from evading tax as their quota contributes to the national development agenda.

Mr Kofi Nti, speaking at the launch of the 2018 National Tax Campaign in Accra today, presenting an overview of the country’s tax performance, revealed that the informal sector, which constitutes 70% of the nation’s economy, makes only about 2% contribution to revenue.

Read: KelniGVG set to operate as GRA prepares to settle Subah with GHC200m

“Even though the informal sector is the largest in terms of operators, its contribution to tax revenue is very negligible. Their contribution is sadly about 2%. This is clearly unacceptable.”

Mr Nti, on the reason for maintaining last year’s theme ‘Our taxes, Our future’, explained that in 2017, the focus was on starting a national conversation about the issue of tax payment while this year’s campaign aims at deepening and sustaining the conversation as well as recognizing the the relevance of tax payments.

He added that the two-month period set for last year’s campaign did not effect the changes they hoped to see and hence, this year’s six month multifaceted framework which will collaborate with the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), Information Service department, as well as media partners to achieve the goal of reaching a larger number of Ghanaians.

He stressed on the need to inform and educate the Ghanaian public, saying people ought to understand that payment of tax is a civil duty and should be observed as such.

    Read: GRA touts CTN benefits

” I believe without the contributions of citizenry in the form of tax payment, the good intentions of government will come to a halt. it is therefore the mark of good citizens to not only insist on their rights or what government should do for us but also carry out our part of the bargain by voluntarily undertaking the obligations of any citizen”

He reiterated their commitment to embarking on various initiatives that serve to educate and sensitize the public on the need to continuously honor their tax contributions.

Mr Nti outlined the various activities which will be undertaken during the six months of campaigning; some of which include community outreach and engagements, stakeholder engagement, radio and television discussions, dawn broadcasts, enforcement services as well as naming and shaming Tax protestors and resisters.

The GRA Commissioner urged citizens to recognize it as a civil duty to register new businesses and settle all outstanding tax. He also urged them to be law abiding and comply with all tax-paying requirements to escape being dealt with by the law.

Remove all barriers & improve the ease of tax payment – Finance Ministry to GRA

Addressing the house on behalf  of the Finance minister Ken Ofori-Atta, Deputy Minister Hon. Mrs. Abena Osei-Asare, acknowledged the positive contribution of the informal sector towards the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and national growth and advised its stakeholders to actively participate in revenue building to bridge the gap between the private and informal sector.

Read: Give us time to comply with tax stamp AGI appeals to GRA

Talking about measures that can be put in place to cultivate a tax-paying habit in citizens, the Mrs. Osei-Asare encouraged the GRA to take drastic measures if need be, all in the interest of national development.

“In as much as we encourage the informal sector to contribute their quota to national development in the form of paying taxes, how are you also making the payment of taxes easier for the informal sector? I will urge GRA to remove all the barriers and improve on the ease of paying taxes by citizens and by so doing, we can rope in a lot of people and widen the tax net.”

She pledged government’s support to the Ghana Revenue Authority, in holding tax evaders accountable and said that good revenue performance will help government improve investment infrastructure and bring about nationwide growth.

  • The Books and Boots Project: Breathing life into dreams

A non-profit social integration/education and sports intervention project through the adoption of three key pillars.

Established in 2008, Books & Boots combines (1.) Education (reading) with (2.) Recreation (soccer) and (3. General Communication (music and dance) to positively impact the lives of young people and their guardians in Communities across Ghana.

Books and boots taps, nurtures and develops raw, mental and sports talents whilst building character, leadership through discipline and teamwork.

Over the years, the project has been able to gather useful sports data especially relating to grassroots football.

This data can now be passed onto relevant education, civic, gender, and even sports stakeholders.

Another aspect of Books & Boots that has gained greater significance amid the economic challenges of the day is communities networking.

Lack of opportunities and the general rise in unemployment is one of the greatest challenges facing society both domestically and globally.

Recognising this challenge, which poses a potential threat to the harmony and stability of peace in any environment, Books and Books has created a template that offers hope to the youth of Ghana and Africa through the simple congregation of like-minded people from different walks of life.

Realising the need to adequately equip people to be effective volunteers and educators, Books & Boots has forged a partnership with the Ghana Volunteers Brigade solely aimed at supporting the Education with Recreation vision.

Active Minds Reading Club is another vital partner in the growth and success of the Books & Boots Project with donations of books and provision of personnel for communities engagement.

The Educators and Volunteers program carries a simple mission; ” train to empower” young volunteers, reading coaches, aspiring soccer coaches and other related personnel including those from the media.

Perhaps most significantly, Books & Boots is now at the stage where we seek partnerships to attract and create more resources to build infrastructure for lasting legacies.

This has brought the project in contact with inspirational young leaders such as the Ghanaian shipping magnate Dr Daniel McKorley aka McDAN.

The entrepreneur/philanthropist has supported sports like tennis for many years and his direct investment has undoubtedly secured the roots he helped plant for Ghana Tennis over a decade ago.

In early 2018, the Communities Champions League Football concept was introduced with a pilot tour of Greater Accra.

The future we are collectively working towards is the establishment of the first Books & Boots Academy in Ghana by the year 2020.

  • Mason dies after jumping from sixth floor of Legon Mall

A mason who was working on a section of the Legon Mall in Accra died yesterday when he jumped in an attempt to escape from a collapsing beam on the sixth floor of the building.

The deceased, whose name was given only as Marvelous, is a Sierra Leonean.

Six other persons, who were also working on the uncompleted building, sustained varying degrees of injury after jumping from the same floor.

While four of the injured workers were said to be receiving medical care at the Legon Hospital at the time of going to press, the rest were said to have been referred to the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital and the 37 Military Hospital respectively.

    Scene

When the Daily Graphic visited the scene around 2 p.m, the section where the incident happened had been cordoned off to allow for investigations. Some Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) personnel were seen inspecting the area to ensure it was safe.

Attempts by the media and officials from the GNFS to get first-hand information from colleagues of the victims at the site proved futile as none of them was willing to talk.

At the Emergency Unit of the Legon Hospital, one of the injured persons, Bright Ofori, 30, said he could not explain the cause of the collapse but indicated that he and his colleagues jumped when they saw the collapsed beam heading towards them.
“When I saw the beam coming towards me, I jumped off the building and landed on my feet, receiving some bruises in the process,” he stated while pointing at his swollen leg.

Although he could not give the total number of people who were working on the sixth floor, he said they were many and that some of them were casting concrete while others were engaged in other activities.

According to him, he was employed barely a month ago as a mason.

Another victim, Bernard Ashley, a labourer, said: “All what I saw was that the beam was coming towards my direction and so I needed to save myself. I jumped and l was lucky to have landed safely with some minor injuries.”

    Investigations

A fire officer, Mr Ebenezer Simpson, said his outfit received a distress call around 12:45p.m. after which some officers rushed to the scene.

He said although there were squatters at the facility, none of them was prepared to give any vital information to help investigate the cause of the accident.

Mr Simpson, however, noted that the contractors working on the building, which was an extension of the Legon Mall, did not adhere to some safety measures to protect the workers.

Currently, he said, construction works had been stopped pending further investigation into the matter.

  • Khashoggi murder ‘planned days in advance” – Turkey’s Erdogan

The killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi was planned days in advance, the Turkish president has said in an address to MPs from his ruling party.

He said Turkey had strong evidence Khashoggi was killed in a premeditated and “savage” murder at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on 2 October.

He also called for the suspects to be tried in Istanbul.

He demanded Saudi Arabia provide answers about where Khashoggi’s body was, and who ordered the operation.

The Saudi kingdom has provided conflicting accounts of what happened to the Washington Post contributor. After weeks of maintaining he was still alive, the authorities now say he was killed in a rogue operation.

Tuesday’s address by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan coincided with the start of an investment conference in Saudi Arabia that has been overshadowed by the Khashoggi case, with dozens of government and business leaders pulling out.

What did the Turkish president say?

President Erdogan confirmed that 18 people had been arrested in Saudi Arabia over the case. However, he has not released any details of the evidence gathered about the killing.

He made no mention of any audio or video recordings mentioned in media reports in the days following the journalist’s disappearance.

President Erdogan said three teams of 15 Saudi nationals had arrived in Istanbul on separate flights in the days and hours leading up to the murder.

A day before the killing, he said, some members from the group travelled to Belgrad forest, near the consulate – an area which was last week searched by Turkish police looking for the body.

He also described how the team had removed the security cameras and surveillance footage from the consulate building prior to Khashoggi’s arrival – who was visiting to obtain documents for his forthcoming marriage.

“My demand is that 18 people be tried in Istanbul,” he told MPs from his ruling AK party, adding that “all those who played a role in the murder” would be punished.
