  • Ex UT, Capital banks staff press for exit package payments

EX-employees of erstwhile UT and Capital banks have appealed to the Bank of Ghana (BoG) and the Joint Receivers, PriceWaterhouseCoopers (PWC Ghana), to consider their plight and pay them their exit packages.

The appeal comes in the wake of the recovery of GH¢400 million from the sale of assets of the two defunct banks and debtors, announced by the Joint Receivers in a statement issued on October 9, 2018.

Read: 47 Rural banks yet to meet capital requirement

In a statement issued last Wednesday, the ex-employees said although the Joint Receivers admitted that the recoveries would help in paying creditors of the bank, including ex-employees, it was important to highlight that it had been 14 long months since the collapse of the two institutions but ex-employees were yet to receive their exit packages.

“Information available to the group indicates that the total liabilities for staff is about GH¢40 million, which is just 10 per cent of what has been recovered so far by the Joint Receivers. Our lives have been in jeopardy since our banks were liquidated and we are, therefore, appealing to the authorities to intervene and see the ex-employees as a priority and pay their exit packages and other benefits,” the statement said.

    Background

On August 14, 2017, ex-employees of the defunct banks were hit with the shocking news that in line with section 123 of the Banks and Specialised Deposit-Taking Institutions Act, 2016 (Act 930), the Bank of Ghana (BoG) had revoked the licences of their respective banks due to severe impairment of capital.

The BoG appointed Messrs Vish Ashiagbor and Eric Nana Nipah, both Directors of PWC Ghana, as Joint Receivers for the purpose of winding down the affairs of the two banks.

As a result of the receivership, the Joint Receivers terminated the contracts of staff numbering about 1,200.

On September 19, 2017, the ex-employees engaged the Union of Commerce, Industry and Finance (UNICOF) to negotiate an exit pay.

Subsequently, negotiations were held with the Joint Receivers during which an exit pay was agreed for all ex-staff.

The statement added that due to the failure to pay the agreed exit pay, the ex-employees petitioned the President but still did not get any response.

“Despite this agreement, we never received what was due us, necessitating a submission of a petition to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on May 20, 2018. Sadly, we are yet to receive even an acknowledgement of the receipt of the petition,” the statement said.

    Cry of innocent workers

The statement also added that in the last 14 months, life had been tougher than they anticipated.

“We are struggling to feed, pay medical bills, pay rent, pay school fees for our children and also cater for our other dependents.

“We are basically struggling to survive. Unfortunately, some of our colleagues have lost their lives within this torrid period, leaving behind children and other dependents,” it added.

The statement said the ex-staff of the defunct banks were also suffering from the stigma of having worked with those banks.

  • Kwasi Appiah defends Gyan’s continuous inclusion in Ghana squad

Ghana coach Kwasi Appiah has insisted that captain Asamoah Gyan remains an important player in his squad, amid criticisms from a section of Ghanaians following the striker’s recent call-up to the national team.

The 32-year-old has suffered a dip in form at club level recently following a troublesome knee injury, and seeing only 44 minutes of game time this term with Turkish side Kayserispor.

Gyan last featured for the Black Stars in September 2017, however, Appiah named him ahead of Jordan Ayew and Rafael Dwamena in a 23-man squad to face Sierra Leone in a 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying double-header this month. Both matches did not hold due to a Fifa ban on Sierra Leone FA.

Read: Black Stars call-ups boost confidence of local based players Kwasi Appiah

“Gyan is still an important player for Ghana. We should ask ourselves, is there any striker out there who is better than Gyan?” Appiah told Topical Radio in Germany.

“Can you mention any Ghanaian striker that everybody will have faith in him [in the absence of Gyan] as we speak? I always say that whenever you are in team building, you cannot drop all the old players you’ve been working with over the years,” he said.

“What we need to understand is that, it is always important to blend the new players with old ones to help in the team’s development and chemistry.

“As a Ghanaian, I took the risk of building a new squad which will be able to take over from the one we have always seen and I strongly believe it will pay off with time even in my absence,” he added.

Ghana sit third in Group F with three points, four behind leaders Kenya, and will travel to Addis Ababa to face Ethiopia in November before hosting Kenya in the last round of matches.

  • Doe Adjaho’s name pops up in chieftaincy feud

Torgbui Dorglo Anumah VI, Paramount Chief / President, Avenor Traditional Council, has petitioned President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to intervene in a festering chieftaincy crisis which could ignite conflict in connection with the celebration of the 5th Atsyiame Tutuza festival.

Portions of the petition read: “Attention is drawn to the planned celebration of an alleged Festival christened “ATSYIAME TUTUZA” on Saturday 20th October 2018 at Dagbamate, Akatsi South District, Volta Region by Torgbui Samlafo IV, a sub-chief within the Avenor Traditional Council, who claims to be the Paramount Chief of Atsyiame Traditional Area, a fictional entity being prop by Torgbui Sri III, Paramount Chief of Anlo Traditional Council; instigated by Edward Doe Adjaho, former Speaker of Parliament. (Please find attached a copy of the brochure for the planned celebration marked Appendix A)

“It beats our imagination that even after the restoration of the Avenor Traditional Council on the 14th December 2017, Torgbui Samlafo IV, Togbui Sri III, Edward Doe Adjaho and their cohorts are continuing their attempts to stoke chaos and conflict within the state of Avenor.

“We the chiefs and people of the Avenor Traditional Council will not allow the supposed celebration of the Atsyiame TutuZa to happen, and we are by this petition calling on the Inspector General of Police to call the aforementioned personalities to order and enforce the laws of the country. We have repeatedly and abundantly made it clear to all well-meaning people who care to know, that Torgbui Samlafo IV is a sub-chief who owes allegiance to Torgbui Amegavieso V, Dusifiaga/ senior divisional right-wing Chief of the Avenor State.”

RE: PLANNED CELEBRATION OF 5TH ATSYIAME TUTUZA BY THE SO-CALLED ATSYIAME TRADITIONAL AREA.

Attention is drawn to the planned celebration of an alleged Festival christened “ATSYIAME TUTUZA” on Saturday 20th October,2018 at Dagbamate, Akatsi South District, Volta Region by Torgbui Samlafo IV , a sub-Chief within the Avenor Traditional Council ,who claims to be Paramount Chief of Atsyiame Traditional Area, a fictional entity being prop by Torgbui Sri III , Paramount Chief of Anlo Traditional Council, instigated by Edward Doe Adjaho, former Speaker of Parliament.(Please find attached a copy of the brochure for planned celebration, marked Appendix A)

    2. It beats our imagination that even after the restoration of the Avenor Traditional Council on the 14th December 2017 Torgbui Samlafo IV, Togbui Sri III, Edward Doe Adjaho and their cohorts are continuing their attempts to stoke chaos and conflict within the state of Avenor.

    3. We the Chiefs and people of the Avenor Traditional Council will not allow the supposed celebration of the Atsyiame TutuZa to happen, and we are by this petition calling on the Inspector General of Police to call the aforementioned personalities to order and enforce the Laws of the country.

    4. We have repeatedly and abundantly made it clear, to all well-meaning people who care to Know, that Torgbui Samlafo IV is a sub-Chief, who owes allegiance to Torgbui Amegavieso V, Dusifiaga/ senior divisional right-wing Chief of the Avenor State.

    5. Further, Atsyiame (a stylistic spelling of ATSIAME) of which Torgbui Samlafo IV claims to be Paramount Chief is but one of thirteen (13) clans within the Avenor State.
    6. As one of the thirteen (13) clans of the Avenor State, members of the ATSIAME clan are dispersed within the State of Avenor, and it is pertinent to note that, there is no single town/village populated exclusively by members of the ATSIAME clan.

    7. Besides, the claim by Torgbui Samlafo IV to be Paramount Chief of ATSYIAME/ATSIAME is fictional/ fictitious and is calculated to misrepresent the facts on the ground because ATSYIAME/ ATSIAME is not a physical location and can therefore not constitute a Traditional Area.

    8. The State of Avenor is made up of thirteen (13) clans and we have only one Paramount Chief called Togbe Dorglo Anumah VI and he is supported by Torgbui Aklime Adifu IV, the Awadada or Field Marshall, Torgbui Amegavieso V, Senior Divisional Right Wing Chief, and Torgbui Sakpaku IX, Senior divisional Left wing Chief.

    7. We of the Avenor Traditional Council have noticed that the venue for the said festival is “DAGBAMATE-ATSYIAME”. Please take note and notice is hereby served that there is no such place as “DAGBAMATE-ATSYIAME”, this is a further attempt by Torgbui Samlafo IV and his cohorts to obfuscate the facts to serve their evil purpose of undermining the unity and cohesion of the state of Avenor.

“DAGBAMATE” which is the rightful name of the venue of the festival is part and parcel of Avenor State. (Please find attached a list of towns and villages within the Avenor Traditional Council, marked Appendix B)

    8. We have been watching with growing concern developments in the town of DAGBAMATE, where a well-known deity is domiciled. As much as we, of the Avenor Traditional Council, uphold the right of freedom of worship and of religion as enshrined in the Constitution of Ghana, we regret to say that the deity domiciled in DAGBAMATE, of which we are reliably informed that Togbui Sri III, Torgbui Samlafo IV and Hon. Edward Doe Adjaho are prominent members, is serving as the fountainhead that is encouraging this flagrant disregard for the customs, practices, and usages of the Chiefs and people of Avenor that has been exhibited regarding this matter.

    9. We are aware that the leaders of this cult are aiding and abetting the illegal actions of Torgbui Samlafo IV with the active support of Hon. Edward Doe Adjaho and Torgbui Sri III, so as to legitimise/regularise the cult and seek to establish recognition for a fictitious central authority they feel can rally more people to their course/religion.

    10. In their attempt to create and establish a hierarchy Torgbui Samlafo IV has appointed certain Chiefs namely: Torgbui Kludzi IV, as right-wing Chief, Torgbui Klu Agudzeamegah II, as Awadada and Torgbui Adzadzi, as left-wing Chief. These are sub-Chiefs within the jurisdiction of the Avenor Traditional Council.

    11. We of the Avenor Traditional Council have no desire or inclination to elevate Torgbui Samlafo IV or any other Chief to any status higher than what has long been established in our domain, as we are fully aware of the repercussions of such actions.

    12. The Avenor paramountcy, as has been established by research conducted by D.A. Chapman, an eminent scholar, as far back as 1945, is an independent State whose Paramount Chief is of equal status as the Paramount Chief of Anlo, Some, Aflao, Dzodze and other sister states in the Southern Volta Region. (Please find attached a copy of a portion of a report on the status of the Avenor Paramountcy, marked Appendix C)

    13. This conclusion was further confirmed by research conducted by Professor G.K. Nukunya, a Sociology Professor and one time Pro Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, published in his paper: Kinship, Marriage, and Family: A Study of the Influence of Contemporary Social Change on an Ewe Tribe, 1964.

    14. We, therefore, wonder by what token Torgbui Samlafo IV will claim that Torgbui Sri III, whose gazette documents clearly lists him as a Paramount Chief equal in status to Torgbui Dorglo Anumah VI, Paramount Chief of Avenor, elevated him to the status of Paramountcy. To the best of our knowledge, such claim is merely grounded in ignorance and is for all intents and purposes null and void; because the State of Anlo is different and distinct from the State of Avenor. Besides, Torgbui Sri III has no such powers of fiat over/ within the domain of the Avenor Traditional Council.

    15. Furthermore, the co-membership of the two (Torgbui Sri III and Torgbui Samlafo IV) in a deity provides no legitimate grounds for an elevation to any status whatsoever; and worse such an exercise is alien to the customs, practices, and usages of the Avenor State.

    16. We believe it is this same reasoning that guided the rejection of an application for Gazette filed by the Anlo Traditional Council to have Torgbui Samlafo IV gazetted as Paramount Chief somewhere in 2016.

    17. Last year a similar attempt to celebrate this festival was quashed by an injunction granted through suit No. E13/03/2018 by Emmanuel Ankamah, Esq., judge of the High Court of Sogakope, Central Tongu District. So we are at a loss as to why Torgbui Samlafo Iv keeps repeating such fruitless action. (Please find attached a copy of the injunction granted under suit No.E13/03/2018 dated 18 October 2017, marked Appendix D)

    18. It is regrettable that Torgbui Samlafo Iv keeps referring to outdated and long overturned historical documents as grounds for his purported elevation. He obviously is in the throws over former glories long lost by his predecessor. It is instructive to note that, Torgbui Samlafo III , his immediate predecessor was demoted from his position of “Asafohenega” (senior divisional Chief ) to “Asafohene” (sub-Chief) in a legal tussle between he and Torgbui Amegavieso V, based on the findings of the Chieftaincy Committee chaired by Nene Azzu Mate Kole, then Paramount Chief of Manya Krobo Traditional Area, which is listed in the Ghana Local Government Bulletin published by authority No. 23, Friday 23rd May, 1969.

    19. We are by this petition serving notice of the shenanigans of Torgbui Sri III, which we feel is calculated to undermine the hegemony of the State of Avenor and has the potential of threatening the peace and security of the Southern Volta Region, and the whole of the country for that matter.

    20. Humbly submitted for your necessary action.

    Torgbui Dorglo Anumah VI

(Paramount Chief / President Avenor Traditional Council)

  • Tina Turner opens up about son’s suicide

Tina Turner has opened up about her son’s suicide earlier this year.

Craig Turner was 59 when he was found dead in July at his Los Angeles home from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Speaking to BBC News, Tina Turner said he had seemed fulfilled in both his professional and personal life after finding a new girlfriend.

“I still don’t know what took him to the edge,” Turner said, “because at that stage he had said to me that he had never met a woman that he felt that way about.”

“He was bringing her to meet me [for] his birthday in August. He had decorated his apartment, that I bought him years ago. He had gotten a new job with a prominent real estate company in California, [which] he was very happy with.

“I have no idea what pulled him down, except something that followed him with loneliness. I think it was something with being alone.

“But when I think that, why didn’t he call the new girlfriend that gave him the lift?

She added: “He was an introverted person, he was very shy, so I didn’t know either, except now when I listen back to our last conversations, I notice a change.

“The last few times we talked, the conversations were different, and I didn’t know that until after the suicide.”

Turner also discussed how her life had changed since her marriage to her long-term partner Erwin Bach in 2013.

She has written about her life in her new autobiography entitled My Love Story.

Not long after her honeymoon she suffered a mild stroke, she then had cancer, and kidney failure and doctors told her she would die if she didn’t take treatment for her kidney.

“So I said well, if it’s time…. I felt like I’m in my late 70s, my mother died at 84, my sister died at 74 and I thought maybe this was my time.

“I’m happier than I’ve ever been in my life. I’m happier than I ever thought that life would become for me,” said Turner.

“So that means that most of my hardships came while I was young and growing up. And in the last days when normally people suffer from old age and sickness my happiness came.

    “I’m really thoroughly happy.

“I did fall a couple of days ago and broke something so I was in a wheelchair and on crutches so maybe now I’m going through my sick period and I think that will take me through to my 90s.

  • Malaysia former deputy prime minister charged with corruption

Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Malaysia’s former deputy prime minister, appeared in court in Kuala Lumpur on Friday charged with 45 counts of corruption, the latest senior politician to be charged with suspected graft since May’s general election brought the country’s first change in government in 60 years.

Zahid, who currently leads the opposition as president of the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO), waved to supporters and the media as he arrived in court where he was charged with abuse of power, criminal breach of trust, and money laundering amounting to 114 million ringgit ($27.4m).

Some of the charges relate to the misuse of funds from a charitable foundation set up by his family, while others are in connection with questionable payments he received when he was home minister from 2013 until earlier this year. Zahid has denied any wrongdoing.

UMNO ruled Malaysia for six decades before its defeat in May’s general election, amid simmering public anger over a multi-billion dollar scandal at state fund 1MDB that was overseen by former prime minister and finance minister Najib Razak.

Zahid spent the night in custody after his arrest on Thursday by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC). The court set bail at 2 million ringgit ($481,000) and the politician was ordered to surrender his passport.

Najib and his wife, Rosmah Mansor, are already facing trial in relation to multiple 1MDB-related charges.

Najib, who local media reported was at court on Friday to give “moral support” to his former deputy, has denied any wrongdoing and pleaded not guilty to 32 criminal charges involving more than 2.3 billion ringgit ($553m) allegedly siphoned from the fund. Rosmah has pleaded not guilty to 17 money-laundering offences.

Malaysia has frozen hundreds of bank accounts and blocked several people from leaving the country as it steps up investigations into how billions of dollars allegedly went missing from state coffers.

In June, the MACC said it had frozen several accounts linked to UMNO as part of their investigations into 1MDB.

US authorities say more than $4.5bn was misappropriated from 1MDB, and nearly $700m diverted into Najib’s personal bank accounts.

  • FIFA to order rescheduling of Ghana-Sierra Leone botched qualifiers reports

FIFA are considering ordering a reschedule of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier between Ghana and Sierra Leone, according to reports.

CAF had announced the cancellation of the double-header last week following the failure of Sierra Leone to meet FIFA conditions over government interference in the administration of the SLFA.

Many had expected that Ghana would be credited with wins in the abandoned games as Sierra Leone works its way towards getting their suspension lifted.

Read: Why does cancelled Sierra Leone clash ruffle Kwesi Appiah and Ghana?

But, fresh reports suggest that FIFA could order CAF to reschedule the games following a meeting between the Vice President of Sierra Leone and FIFA boss Giani Infantino in Zurich earlier this week.

It is believed that the Sierra Leone Vice President Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh had given assurance of ensuring the restoration of the SLFA with the return of President Isha Johansen and General Secretary Chris Kamara.
FIFA will pay a working visit to Sierra Leone to inspect the progress of the agreed roadmap towards the restoration of Sierra Leonean football.

Read: “I promise; I will play for Kotoko before I retire” Asamoah Gyan

If confirmed, Ghana will then have to host Sierra Leone in the first leg of the botched qualifier and will travel for the return encounter at agreed dates.

This news will come as a major disappointment to many Ghanaian football fans who were expecting the official declaration of the Black Stars as winners of the botched games.

Ghana is currently behind Kenya in the qualifying group by four points with a two-game deficit.

  • Ghana’s financial system stable, not in crisis – Kofi Bentil

Vice President of policy think tank Imani Ghana, Kofi Bentil, has debunked myths of a meltdown in the nation’s financial sector following the recent collapse and merger of some banks and panic withdrawals.

Mr Bentil believes that, contrary to opinions that Ghana’s  financial system is in crisis due to recent developments, the nation’s financial space is “very stable” and capable of growth., a situation he says “we have to be proud of”.

“Our financial system is very stable. We have had in the past year some problems with the banking system. In certain places, the domino effect will just crash everything. It happened in the United States and it was catastrophic. Some people have lost everything but we have not had a catastrophic meltdown of our financial system. It’s something we have to be proud of,” he said.

In an address at Media General’s Economic Dialogue Series in Accra, on the theme “Has Ghana learnt any lessons and what is the way forward?”, Mr Bentil argued that despite the challenges which have forced banks into insolvency, the current crisis is manageable when regulators are empowered to enforce the laws.

He explained that regulatory bodies in Ghana tend to have a minimalist view or interpretation of their powers. This, he said, is as a result of a constitutional provision that restrains these bodies from clamping on businesses engaged in unlawful activities and dealings.

He cited banking and mortgage crisis that have taken place in advanced economies like the United States despite their sophisticated structures and high level of financial education.

Mr Alhassan Andani, president of the Association of Bankers, said banks have been at the center of phenomenal growth and the spread of global wealth the world has seen. He added that all activities ranging from household aspirations, government aspirations and expectations of large corporate companies are all reflected by banks.

    https://www.facebook.com/theindependentnewspaper/videos/1947162782006031/

Mr. Andani assured the public that the central bank is committed to correcting the ills of banks that have faltered.

“The right authorities are at work and any restitution and consequence management will be appropriately addressed”

The President of the Association of Banks expressed his full confidence in the financial sector and urged the public to allay their fears.

“The banking sector in Ghana is absolutely strong. This is to say all of the issues in the industry doesn’t impact 10% of our wealth and there hasn’t been any real systemic impact. Household deposits, a company’s ability to borrow and the need for them to move funds between themselves internally and externally is still very safe and growing. Whatever we are going through can only make us better,” he noted.

  • Codeine syrup addiction: Nigerian arrested after BBC expose

A former Nigerian pharmaceuticals executive who was implicated in a BBC investigation into the illegal sale of addictive opioids has been arrested.

Chukwunonye Madubuike was detained west of Lagos, close to the border with Benin, police said.

He went on the run in May after he was filmed illegally selling codeine syrup to an undercover BBC reporter.

Police said he told them he thought he was selling to a genuine businessman and regretted not checking his ID.

The BBC documentary exposed the extent of addiction to the codeine-based cough mixture among Nigeria’s youth.

Read: Two SA farmers found guilty of murdering 16-year-old boy

Codeine is a painkiller, which is highly addictive and if taken to excess can cause organ failure and trigger schizophrenia.

The Africa Eye film also exposed the black market practice of selling the medicine to people without a doctor’s prescription or a pharmaceutical licence.

Chukwunonye Madubuike was a business development executive with Emzor pharmaceuticals, who sacked him after the film was aired.

Lagos State Commissioner of Police Imohimi Edgal said the arrest was made in the border town of Idiroko in Ogun State. He had been heading to Cotonou in Benin.

He said Emzor had reported Mr Madubuike in May on suspicion of having “knowingly supplied the controlled drugs to persons who were not supposed to have access to them contrary to” Nigerian law.

Read: Tramadol abuse: 29-year-old ex-addict tells his story

Mr Edgal went on to say Mr Madubuike, in his statement, said he was “was only trying to meet his sales target”, acknowledged he should have carried out greater checks to verify the identity of the person he was dealing with and “regretted selling controlled substances to unauthorised persons”.

Since the documentary was aired, more than 2.4 million codeine syrup bottles have been recalled and a number of pharmacists and small-time dealers have been arrested. Hundreds of people turned up to public screenings of the documentary, and it has helped raise awareness of the problem in other African countries.

Codeine cough syrup – the scale of the problem

Codeine is a pain killer but also an addictive opioid. Taken in excess, it can cause schizophrenia and organ failure.

Codeine syrup is commonly mixed with soft drinks and often consumed by students
The codeine is imported, but the syrup is made in Nigeria by more than 20 pharmaceutical companies.

Nigeria’s drug enforcement agency is fighting this epidemic. In a recent raid, it seized 24,000 bottles of codeine syrup from a single lorry in Katsina.

Codeine syrup addiction is a problem across Africa, with reports of addiction in Kenya, Ghana, Niger, and Chad.

In 2016, India banned multiple brands of codeine cough syrup following reports of addition.

Chairman of the Environmental and Sanitation sub-committee of KMA, James Nana Prempeh made this known on Wednesday in Accra when members of the committee paid a courtesy call on Sanitation and Water Resources Minister, Cecilia Abena Dapaah.

According to him, the debt has been accumulating over the last 20 years and is posing serious challenges to refuge collection in Kumasi as waste contractors always raise concerns over the nonpayment of their debts anytime they are called upon by KMA to work.

Recently KMA had to take over management of the landfill site because it was owing one of the six contractors in the metropolis, Stanley K. Owusu, over GH¢ 80 million, he said.

The Chairman also pointed out a plethora of challenges facing KMA in regard to waste management, calling on the minister to intervene.

Madam Dapaah, meanwhile, promised to find solutions to some of the challenges facing KMA.

She stated that the sanitation situation in Ghana shall be addressed and that there will come a time that the country will have “zero landfill sites because we should be able to treat our waste. Waste is wealth and we should be able to treat our wastes and get revenue from it,” she said.

According to the Minister, there is lot of harm in keeping the landfill sites open for long that is why there should be zero landfills.

“Treatment plants should be the way to go,” she stressed, adding that we should always have good environmental practices.

The Minister charged KMA to ensure that firms contracted to lift waste do so regularly and should be sanctioned any time they default.
