Six persons died, while 2,459 others, including 45 pregnant women, were displaced in the recent floods that occurred in the Savelugu municipality and the Nanton District in the Northern Region.

A total of 906 acres of farmland was also destroyed, while 285 houses collapsed in the process.

The flood situation, which lasted for about two months in those areas and other parts of the region, was made worse by the spillage of water from the Bagre Dam in neighbouring Burkina Faso.

The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) Coordinator responsible for Savelugu and Nanton, Mr Alhassan M. Sulemana, disclosed this in an interview with the Daily Graphic during a tour of the affected areas where the water has since receded.

    Appeal

The victims are yet to receive relief items from the government.

Mr Sulemana, therefore, appealed to non-governmental organisations (NGOs), philanthropists and corporate institutions to go to the aid of the affected people.

For his part, the Assembly Member for the Kukobila Electoral Area, who is also the NADMO zonal coordinator for the area, Mr Mohammed Chimsi, described the situation of the people as pathetic.

According to him, most of the victims were currently living with relatives and friends.

  • Fire outbreaks: Use only certified electrical wiring professionals – Amewu tells Ghanaians

The Energy Minister, John Peter Amewu is urging Ghanaians to support government’s quest to reduce fire outbreaks associated with poor electrical wiring.

To realise this feat, he advised that the services of qualified and certified electricians, who have undergone training at the Energy Commission, should be employed by households and industries.

The Minister made this call in a speech read for him by the Deputy Director in- charge of Nuclear and Alternative Energy at the Ministry of Energy, Dr Robert Sogbadzi, at the graduation of about 994 Certified Electrical Wiring Professionals at the Energy Commission head office in Accra.

About 7, 018 electrical wiring professionals have been trained by the Energy Commission since 2013, and to the Minister, the Electrical Wiring Regulations LI 2008, which was passed in 2012 to ensure that only certified electrical wiring professionals are required to undertake wiring, has helped to minimize fire outbreaks associated with poor wiring, in addition to the use of substandard electrical materials for wiring in the country.

Based on this, he said the ministry would continue to support the Energy Commission to train more electrical wiring professionals in order to ensure that the country is saved from rampant fire outbreaks.

Later in an interview with Dr Robert Sogbadzi, he commended the efforts of the Energy Commission for bringing sanity in the area of electrical wiring.

“You will bear with me that for the past three years or more, the rampant fire outbreaks we used to experience in public places especially markets, have been reduced. When you go to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), they will confirm what I’m telling you. These days, we don’t hear of fire outbreaks as it was in the past,” he said.

He charged the Energy Commission to intensify education for house owners to replace all over 10 years old wires, because they are weak and so likely to spark fire.

Touching on the issue of substandard electrical wires which have flooded our markets, Dr Sogbadzi described as worrying recent comment by the Executive Director of Ghana Standard Authority that about 90% of electrical wiring materials on the market are substandard.
In this regard, he called on the Ghana Standards Authority and the Energy Commission to ensure that all these substandard wires on the market are confiscated.

Director for Fire Safety at the GNFS, William Yawson, corroborated the statement by Dr Sogbadzi that fire outbreaks associated with poor wiring have taken a nosedivede for some years now.

He lauded the Energy Commission for the training of the electrical wiring professionals, arguing that “when these electrical wiring professionals are in the country and they are contracted, they will use quality materials for whatever job they will be offered as compared to those who haven’t been through the training.”

  • May makes Brexit plea as EU steps up plans for no deal

British Prime Minister Theresa May assured EU leaders in Brussels on Wednesday that she can still reach a Brexit deal, avoiding a showdown over stalled talks as Brussels stepped up planning for a failure of negotiations.

May was given a 15-minute slot to speak to the bloc’s other 27 leaders before they sat down to dinner without her and discussed preparations for a possible no-deal Brexit under which Britain leaves the European Union without a treaty to cushion the disruption to businesses across the continent.

But three days after talks stalled over the Irish border “backstop”, thwarting hopes of a deal at the summit, May arrived determined to stress that an accord was still on the cards.

“We have shown we can do difficult deals together constructively. I remain confident of a good outcome,” she told the leaders, according to a British official. “The last stage will need courage, trust and leadership on both sides.”

Read: Brexit: May vows no compromise with EU on Brexit plan

It was far from the “decisive progress” the 27 had wanted and they agreed to call off — for now at least — a planned Nov. 17-18 summit that was to have inked an agreement.

Instead, May gets some more weeks to resolve the domestic political woes which most EU leaders believe are the real obstacle to a deal.

A month after May’s last meeting in Austria, when her rejection of EU proposals designed to avoid a revival of border tensions in Northern Ireland provoked angry reactions, her tone was much calmer, said EU officials who were present.

“The tone was more relaxed than in Salzburg, undoubtedly. There is a message of goodwill,” said Antonio Tajani, president of the European Parliament. “But I did not perceive anything substantially new in terms of content … The tone was of someone who wants to reach an agreement.”

An aide to French President Emmanuel Macron said much of the discussion among the 27 was about May’s difficulties in getting any deal through parliament, where some in her own party would rather walk out of the EU without any strings.

Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz said: “I am optimistic that we can reach a deal in the next weeks or months.”

EU negotiator Michel Barnier, who briefed the leaders, believes a deal must be done by December to give parliaments on both sides of the English Channel time to ratify a treaty.

    Transition proposal

Tajani said he raised with May the possibility that the post-Brexit transition period, during which Britain would retain EU rules and so avoid border problems with Ireland, could be extended by a year to 2021.

EU negotiators proposed this to ease a demand for special rules for Northern Ireland.

Such an extension, keeping Britain under EU governance with no say in it, would be highly unpopular with hardline supporters of Brexit.

Read: Brexit plan critics are playing politics Theresa May

Tajani said May told him she would consider it but gave no indication of whether she favoured such an extension.

May has repeatedly ruled out extending what she calls an implementation period, but at least one of her ministers has indicated he may support such a step.

She has instead pressed the EU to move on to talks on the future relationship, and secure a trade deal that could end the need for a backstop.

One EU diplomat closely involved in the negotiations said May’s intervention had revived spirits after the disappointments of the weekend: “The atmosphere has improved. There is more trust and willingness to move forward together.”

Earlier, German Chancellor Angela Merkel had cautioned that Europe must prepare for all outcomes: “That includes the possibility that Britain leaves the European Union without a deal.”

European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker briefed the leaders on the EU executive’s plans for a no-deal scenario.

May will rejoin her EU counterparts on Thursday as the focus shifts to a summit with Asian leaders, including China’s Premier Li Keqiang and the prime ministers of Japan and Russia.

  • Its time to fight back with ideas Cuba Ambassador to Ghana

The Cuba Ambassador to Ghana, His Excellency Pedro Luis Despaigne Qonzàlez has said that it is time for Cubans across the world to fight the American blockade with their ideas.

H.E Qonzàlez said, Cuba even though has survived the blockade by the United States of America for over 56years, it was time the country with the support of the rest of the world fought against this bad treatments.

According to him, the commercial, financial and economic blockade imposed on Cuba by the Americans does not only affect the citizenry of Cuba but the interests and sovereign rights of third world countries who do business with the Cuban government.

“The economic, commercial and financial blockade is simply their way of stampeding the development of the Cuban economy,” he said.

He said the economic damage to the government of Cuba from the blockade by the American government for the period of June 2017 to March 2018 is four million three hundred twenty-one thousand two hundred dollars ($4,321,200.00).

“We have been able to survive all these years through strategic measures put in place by our government, but you know we as a country cannot produce and manufacture everything by ourselves, we need other people to survive” he added.

H.E Qonzàlez added that the over 56years of unjust economic, financial and commercial blockade has to stop because Cuba will not trade its sovereignty for anything.

“So because we are different, we have to suffer?” he quizzed adding that, “even in this situation, Cuba has been able to train medical doctors and provide free medical care and education for its people”.

He said, the U.S government over the years have tightened the blockade against Cuba up until President Barack Obama started the normalization process in 2015 but unfortunately, the blockade has once again been tightened by the Donald Trump administration.

H.E Pedro Luis Despaigne Qonzàlez was speaking on the Cuba resolution 72/4 of the United Nations General Assembly entitled “Necessity of ending the Economic, Commercial and Financial blockade imposed by the United States of America against Cuba June 2018” at the Cuba Embassy in Accra on Tuesday.

    BACKGROUND

The U.S.-Cuba relationship has been plagued by distrust and antagonism since 1959, the year Fidel Castro overthrew a U.S.-backed regime in Havana and established a socialist state allied with the Soviet Union.

During the half century that followed, successive U.S. administrations pursued policies intended to isolate the island country economically and diplomatically. The United States has sanctioned Cuba longer than any other country.

Cuban leader in 2008, took some extraordinary steps to normalize bilateral relations, meeting with each other, restoring full diplomatic ties, and easing travel restrictions. President Donald J. Trump has reversed some actions taken by the Obama administration and raised the prospect that the United States will further roll back ties.

Both Castroism and hard-line policies toward the United States are expected to continue under President Miguel Diaz-Canel, who succeeded Raul in April 2018.

  • Where are they now: Ghana’s U-20 FIFA World Cup winners

Yesterday marked exactly nine years since Ghana’s Black Satellites won the 2009 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Egypt.

The all-conquering Ghana team which had won the African Championship some months before travelling to Cairo was captained by former Swansea City talisman Andre Ayew and were powered to the finals against Brazil by eight-goal top scorer Dominic Adiyiah.

The 10-man Satellites who lost defender Daniel Addo in the 37th to a red card held on to edge-out the Brazilians who had the likes of Douglas Costa, Giuliano and Ganso in the ranks after the game ended 0-0 after 120 minutes.

Some members of that team including Andre Ayew, Jonathan Mensah and Samuel Inkoom went on to feature for Ghana’s senior national team, the Black Stars at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa where they finished as quarter-finalists.

Of the eleven players selected by coach Sellas Tetteh to start against Brazil nine years ago, four (Samuel Inkoom, David Addy, Ransford Osei and Dominic Adiyiah) are unattached to any club, while two of them (Abeiku Quansah and goalie Daniel Agyei play in Africa.

    Find out what the starting eleven for that final have been up to with their careers;

Daniel Agyei (Goalkeeper) – Jimma Aba Jiffar FC

Daniel Agyei aged 19 at the time of the 2009 tournament, the Liberty Professional goalie saved two kicks from Souza and Alex Texeira in Ghana’s 4-3 penalty shootout win over Brazil.

He, however, missed out on the Golden Glove which went to Esteban Alvarado of Costa Rica.

He went on to have stints with Free State Stars in South Africa, Medeama and Simba in Tanzania while amassing five senior international caps.

In July this year, the 28-year-old helped his current club Jimma Aba Jiffar FC clinch the 2017/18 Ethiopian Premier League title.

    Samuel Inkoom (Banned)

The speedy right fullback was one of the stars of the tournament with his exhilarating runs from deep and incisive cut-backs to forwards Adiyiah and Ransford Osei.

At his prime, the former Hasaacas trainee’s playing style drew comparisons with Ivorian Emmanuel Eboue who was then rampaging down Arsenal’s right flank.

However, his career has fallen on hard times and he is currently clubless following legal troubles.

In May this year, Inkoom was hit with a one-year ban by Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) after failing to pay an agent he cheated in a transfer back in 2014.

In June 2017, the 29-year-old was ordered to pay Curtis Willer $65,000 or in default serve a one-year ban, Inkoom failed to pay the said money and he was banned by FIFA.

After failing to settle the agent, the case was open again and he has been handed another ban.

The last time he featured for the national team was in an International friendly against the Netherlands in Rotterdam in a warm-up game for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

    Jonathan Mensah (Columbus Crew)

Calm in possession and tidy in a tackle, Mensah proved to be the perfect partner for the much more rugged Daniel Addo during the U-20 World Cup.

His performances earned him a move to Italian Serie A club Udinese who later loaned him to Granada in Spain.

Stints at Evian in the French Ligue 1 and Anzhi Makhachkala followed before he became a mainstay at Columbus Crew SC in the MLS where he has made 52 appearances since 2017.

Daniel Addo (Gokulam Kerala Football Club)

The uncompromising King Faisal centre-back will be remembered for receiving a straight red card in the final against Brazil.

A stint with Ashanti Gold followed before joining Ukrainian side FC Zorya Luhansk in 2011. In March 2013 Addo joined Kazakhstan Premier League club Kairat on loan, with a buyout clause, for the season from Zorya Luhansk.

Addo, 29, now plays for Gokulam Kerala Football Club in the Indian First Division.

    David Addy (Clubless)

Currently clubless after a stint with Riga FC in the Latvian premiership, the lanky Addy made the left fullback slot his at the world cup.

Much was expected from him when Portuguese powerhouse FC Porto signed him from Randers in 2010 but he made only one appearance for the senior team amid a string of loans to Académica de Coimbra and Panetolikos.

He also featured for Vitória de Guimarães, Waasland-Beveren, Delhi Dynamos and RoPS, making 21 senior appearances in the process.

    Abeiku Quansah (DC Motema Pemba)

The versatile Quansah then with OGC Nice of the French Ligue 1 played on the right flank during the tournament having made the progression from the 2007 FIFA U-17 World Cup.

In 2011, he went on to Arsenal Kyiv. He stayed throughout 2013, then joined El Gouna in Egypt.

After a period without a club, he joined DC Motema Pemba in DR Congo in March this year.

    Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu (Udinese)

Agyeman-Badu scored the winning penalty against Brazil and will be remembered for ripping off his jersey and running across the pitch after scoring the winner in the shootout.

Separate loans from Berekum Arsenal to Kumasi Asante Kotoko and Recreativo Huelva followed before he joined Udinese in 2010.

Badu ended his seven-year stay with Udinese when he joined Turkish Süper Lig club Bursaspor on loan for the 201718 season.

He has made 76 appearances for the Black Stars and scored 11 goals including some long-range stunners for the national team.

    Andre Ayew (Fenerbahçe)

Arguably the most famous alumni of the team, Andre is the son of three-time African footballer of the year Abedi Pele.

He became the first African captain to lift the FIFA U-20 trophy when Ghana defeated Brazil at the Cairo International Stadium.

Although Andre did not feature in the individual awards, his reputation as a motivator was built at that tournament.

Andre scored tow of Ghana’s goals en route to the finals.

On August 8 2016, Ayew signed for West Ham United for a then club record fee of £20.5 million on a three-year contract from Swansea City.

On January 31 2018, Ayew completed a deadline day return to former club Swansea City for a reported £18 million rising to £20 million with add-ons.

However, he could not prevent the Welsh club from being relegated and departed on loan for Turkish Süper Lig club Fenerbahçe on a season-long loan in July 2018.

Now the deputy captain of Ghana’s national team, Ayew has racked up 75 appearances and scored 14 goals for the Black Stars.

    Rabiu Mohammed (Anzhi Makhachkala)

The lanky defensive midfielder sat in front of the back four during the tournament and used his intelligence to snuff out danger before it occurred.

Encouraging spells with Evian, Kuban Krasnodar were devastated by a two-year injury nightmare when he signed a three-and-half-year deal with Anzhi Makhachkala in August 2016.

Injury problems forced that contract to be cancelled but the club re-signed him on a short-term deal.

He played all three matches at the 2014 World Cup, represented the Black Stars at two African Cup of Nations tournaments and has 31 international caps.

    Ransford Osei (Clubless)

The diminutive former Kessben FC youngster scored four goals at the U-20 World Cup including strikes against Uzbekistan and England.

Described as “an opportunistic goal machine” with superb pace and movement by FIFA.com at the start of his career he has developed the unwanted reputation as a journeyman.

His CV includes spells with Maccabi Haifa, FC Twente, Granada, Bloemfontein Celtic, Kotoko, Polokwane City, RoPS, Santa Claus and FK Palanga as well as two national team appearances.

He is currently clubless but at 28 he still has some football left in him.

    Dominic Adiyiah (Clubless)

In late October 2009, after impressing in the U-20 World Cup, Adiyiah joined the mighty AC Milan from Fredrikstad for a fee of €500,000.

The move was ratified on January 2, 2010, the first day of the winter transfer window. However, Adiyiah was still not able to play, since he was called up by the Ghana national team to take part in the African Nations Cup. Upon his return, a month later, he also secured an Italian work permit, which he was still lacking, thus becoming definitively eligible to play.

However, he was never selected by head coach Leonardo during the remainder of the 200910 season.

Milan loaned him to Reggina, Partzan, Karsiyaka and Arsenal Kyix, scoring only one goal in a combined 31 appearances.

On June 25, 2012, Adiyiah completed a three-year switch to Arsenal Kyiv, ending his three years career with AC Milan, having made no competitive appearances for Milan.

Between 2012-2013, he scored seven goals for Arsenal Kyiv before moving to Kazakhstan where be made 14 appearances and scored once for Atyraus.

In February 2015, Adiyiah signed for Thai Premier League side Nakhon Ratchasima FC where he scored 19 goals in 96 appearances over a three-year period.

Adiyiah, 28, is currently without a club after leaving Nakhon.

    Sellas Tetteh (Coach)

Accused of demanding bribes by Ishmael Yartey, a player he excluded from the final Satellites squad for the U-20 World Cup, Tetteh went on to win the tournament and in the process banished that tag.

He was nominated for the CAF Coach of the Year Award and went on to coach the national teams of Rwanda (2010-2011) and Sierra Leone (2015-2017).

In February this year, Tetteh was appointed the head coach of Tamale City FC on an initial one (1) year deal with an option for an extension for a further year.

Information reaching Today indicates that the Minister for Chieftaincy and Traditional Affairs, Mr Samuel Kofi Ahiave Dzamesi, has ordered for the immediate suspension of the impending funeral rites for the burial of the late Paramount Chief of Ngleshie Alata Traditional Area in James Town, Accra, Oblempong Nii Kojo Ababio V.

The impending funeral rites and burial of the late Oblempong Kojo Ababio V, were scheduled to come off from Friday October 12, 2018, Today gathered, would have been climaxed with a thanksgiving church service on Sunday, October 21, 2018 at The Most Holy Trinity Cathedral Church in Accra.

rEAD: Funeral poster of Ibrah One pops up after Menzgold resumed operations

But to avert any bloody violence during the event, the sector minister in consultation with the Greater Accra Regional Security Council, Greater Accra Regional Minister, Mr Ishmael Ashittey, and state security agencies have stopped the funeral.

The development follows the decision by members of the Ngleshie Alata Traditional Council with the support of family members of the late Oblempong Kojo Ababio V to prevent the rightful kingmakers of James Town Paramount Stool and the newly-installed James Town Mantse, Oblempong Wetse Kojo II, from performing the customs and traditions that will pave way for the burial of the late chief.

That decision, according to the sources close to the James Town Paramountcy, was taken by the chieftaincy minister after the kingmakers, heads and elders of the two ruling houses of Ngleshie Alata Traditional Paramount Stool officially reported the misconduct of members of the council and family members of the late Oblempong Kojo Ababio V to bury the late chief without recourse to the customs and traditions of the area.

The sources told Today that the minister was not happy about the misunderstanding which had rocked the James Town paramountcy ahead of the funeral rites and burial of Oblempong Kojo Ababio, hence his resolve to halt the funeral in order to prevent any clash at James Town.

rEAD: Menzgold saga: There will be a national funeral Tony Aubynn

That decision, according to the ministry of chieftaincy and religious affairs, has become necessary considering the ack of consultation in the organisation of the burial and funeral of late Oblempong Kojo Ababio,

Meanwhile, a letter signed and issued by the Minister for Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Samuel Kofi Dzamesi, indicates the minister met with elders of all the two ruling houses in the area over recent developments regarding the burial of the late Oblempong.

The three-page letter, which copy is in possession of Today notes that the two houses agreed at that meeting that the two royal gates including the Wetse Kojo We of Adanse and Kofi Akrashie We of Ajumaku Darumpong who were hitherto not included in the funeral arrangements, be represented on the funeral committee.

In view of that, a decision was taken for the two royal gates to nominate five elders together with five members from the Ngleshie traditional council for another meeting scheduled for October 23, 2018.

There have been some pockets of tension brewing in the seven divisional clans of Ngleshie Alata Traditional Area in James Town over the burial and funeral arrangements for the late Nii Kojo Ababio V.

This development has, however, created some disagreements between the Ngleshie Alata Traditional Council and some principal principal kingmakers, accredited heads and elders of the two ruling houses of the Ngleshie Alata Paramount Stool ahead of the final funeral rites and burial of the late Paramount Chief of James Town, Oblempong Kojo Ababio V.

The misunderstanding is as a result of a claim challenging the chieftaincy capacity of the newly installed James Town Mantse, Oblempong Wetse Kojo II, to perform the necessary customary rites for the funeral and burial of the late Oblempong Kojo Ababio.

It is believed that the decision taken by the ministry of chieftaincy and religious affairs will ensure peace and harmony before, during and after the burial and funeral of the lake Nii Kojo Ababio V.

Oblempong Nii Kojo Ababio V passed away on December 22, 2017 after a short illness.

  • Boxing promoter slams referee Bertin

Mr. Solomon Otoo Lartey, a boxing promoter has slammed referee Adorn Bertin, for hurriedly waving off the fight between Isaac Sackey and Wasiru Mohamed, in the World Boxing Organisation (WBO) Africa Super Bantamweight fight last Saturday.

Referee Bertin from Benin, stopped the fight in round three, after Mohamed delivered a hefty hook on the left jaw of Sackey, which sent him straight onto the canvas.

Sackey, within seconds lifted himself from the canvas, but the referee waived off the fight signifying victory for Mohamed and this attracted the fury of the fans of the former.

It was chaotic at the Bukom Boxing Arena, with supporters of both camps trading punches, hitting each other with plastic chairs and engaging in fisticuffs, leading to the inability on the referee to the official declaration of the champion.

Speaking in an interview with the GNA Sports, Mr. Otoo Lartey, also known as “Mangola” in boxing circles, said the referee was incompetent and does not deserve a place in the ring.

“His conduct was disgraceful. I am sure he was looking for an opportunity to rule in favour of Mohamed and so with the slightest chance he waived off the fight.

“From the way he conducted himself in the ring, it shows that, he might have been influenced with money to officiate in favour of Mohamed,” he added.

“I am still at a loss as to why he stopped the fight without giving Sackey the mandatory count, after the knockout. I dare the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) to hand over the title to Mohamed.

“I would personally lead a demonstration against the GBA and all those who matter, because the verdict was unfair. The GBA and the WBO Africa must come clean,” he stated.

  • Stop tagging Zongo communities as robbery areas NDC group to Aziz Futah

The Zongo Commando in NDC, Abdul Aziz Mohammed, has replied his counterpart Abdul Aziz Futah, who is the Nasara Coordinator of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) for tagging Zongo communities as robbery areas.

He said following widespread publication of the comments made by the NPP kingpin last week which was published by Ghanaweb, that the introduction of free SHS by the Akufo-Addo administration would address robbery cases in Zongo communities, he has been wondering if indeed Aziz Futah was truly from the Zongo community.

Read: Free SHS will stop robberies in Zongos Nasara Coordinator

Reacting to the development in an interview, he questioned “How can you speak like this. A leader coming out of the Zongo community and you tag the area as robbery grounds. What exactly was he trying to achieve?

Is he an armed robber himself, if indeed he is from the Zongo community, if he is not, then who is doing the robbery in the Zongo communities that would be addressed by free SHS“.

The man tipped to win the Zongo Caucus Coordinator position in the impending national elections of the NDC, said Aziz Futah must guide his public utterances to save himself from embarrassment in the Zongo communities.

He explained that it was public knowledge that many of the robbery cases happening in Ghana usually occur in major cities and not slams or underprivileged communities like the Zongos.

“They are either high way robbery or robbery in residential areas. What is there in the Zongo communities for armed robbers to take” he asked.

According to the industrious politician who has gradually warmed himself into the bossom arms of delegates of NDC, the best way Aziz Futah could assist Zongo communities was to speak on promotion of peace and tranquillity, unity and diversity and not making slanderous comments against the area which has produced quality human resources for the development of the country.

“We refuse to accept this tag and calls on Aziz Futah to apologize or face the counter displeasure of Zongo constituencies nationwide”

He said following extensive consultation, some of the Zongo communities across the country have vowed to wait for Aziz and his party to visit them with the leadership, and they would receive blistering attacks.

“We would launch scathing attacks on them for maligning the Zongo communitie as robbery areas and I’m telling President Akuffo Addo and the leadership of the NPP”, he warned.

He ruled out any chances for the NPP to gain any reasonable ground in the Zongo communities following failed campaign promises and the recent utterances.

“We cannot associate ourselves with the Nasara Coordinator and also NPP for failing to condemn the unguarded, misguided, and unguided comments deliberately uttered to run down Zongo communities. It is unacceptably backsliding and thrush. Aziz ought to know better that together we can build and improve the image of Zongo communities” he fired an incredulous salvo”, he added.

Boko Haram militants have killed a female aid worker held by the group since March, the Nigerian government has confirmed.

On Sunday, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) appealed for their lives to be spared as a deadline issued by the militants approached.

Nigerian Information and Culture Minister Alhaji Lai Mohammed said on Monday the government was “deeply pained” by news of the killing, but added it would “keep the negotiations open and continue to work to free the innocent women who remain in the custody of their abductors”.

Medical workers Hauwa Mohammed Liman and Alice Loksha were kidnapped alongside midwife Saifura Hussaini Ahmed Khorsa in March while working in the town of Rann with the ICRC.

A schoolgirl who is also being held was among 110 girls kidnapped from a school in the town of Dapchi in February. Most of the other students were freed but the girl, who refused to convert to Islam, remains in captivity.

Ms Khorsa was killed last month and the faction holding her – known as the Islamic State’s West Africa Province – threatened to kill another hostage by Monday if their demands were not met.

“That’s the first time in decades, and that’s something not just the NYPD, but all New Yorkers can be proud of.”

The number of murders is on the rise again this year, after hitting a low in 2017 with 292 total — a record since the 1950s.

In the first half of 2018, the city recorded 147 murders, an eight percent increase over the same period in 2017, and mostly in Brooklyn and the Bronx.

  • Indian Minister sues #MeToo accuser

Indian Minister MJ Akbar has filed a defamation case against a woman journalist who named him as part of a #MeToo movement gripping the country.

Priya Ramani’s allegations against Mr Akbar inspired more women to talk about his alleged “predatory conduct”.

Apart from the case against Ms Ramani, he has threatened to also sue the other women who have spoken out against him.

The former newspaper editor added that he would not be stepping down from his post as deputy Foreign Minister.

The Minister is the most high-profile figure to be named in India’s #MeToo movement.

He returned from an official trip abroad on Monday and called the allegations “false” and “baseless”.

Mr Akbar was first named last week by Ms Ramani, who retweeted an article she had written for Vogue India in 2017 titled “To the Harvey Weinsteins of the world”, where she recounted what she called her first experience of workplace harassment.

Ms Ramani did not name anyone in the original piece, but said in a tweet on 8 October that the article had been about Mr Akbar.

Since then, other women have come forward with their own stories naming Mr Akbar. At least one other anonymous account is believed to be about him.

“Why has this storm risen a few months before a general election? Is there an agenda? You be the judge,” he wrote.

Many journalists and women have taken to social media to support those who have accused Mr Akbar of harassment.
