  • Malawi activists in bid to block Gandhi statue

More than 3,000 people have so far signed an online petition to stop Malawi’s government from erecting a statue of Indian anti-colonial campaigner Mahatma Gandhi in the commercial capital, Blantyre.

Gandhi believed that “Indians were superior to Africans” and had made numerous disparaging remarks about them, the petition said.

The government has responded by saying the statue is aimed at recognizing Gandhi’s role in the struggle against colonialism in India and Africa.

Malawi shares good relations with India and the Indian government plans to build a $10m Mahatma Gandhi Conference and Convention Centre in Blantyre.

But a campaigner against the building of the statue, Mkotama Katenga-Kaunda, told BBC Focus on Africa that it was “offensive” to honour Gandhi, who had “nothing to do with Malawi”.

“We don’t even honour our heroes. The only statue we have is that of Hastings Kamuzu Banda, our first president,” he added.

In 2016, a campaign was also launched to remove a statue of Gandhi from a university in Ghana.

But Gandhi was praised by South African anti-apartheid icon President Nelson Mandela who said his teachings helped the struggle against white-minority rule in the country.

Ethiopia’s then-Emperor Haile Selassie I, was also an admirer.

“Mahatma Gandhi will always be remembered as long as free men and those who love freedom and justice live,” he said.

  • Support SME’s to alleviate poverty KsTU to government

The Dean of Graduate Studies at the Kumasi Technical University (KsTU), Prof Gabriel Dwomor, has called for a stronger partnership between government, larger corporations as well as Small and Medium Enterprises (SME’s) to solve the cycle of poverty in the country.

Read: 1,350 SMEs get $10m NEIP funding

According to him, Government can alleviate poverty by focusing on SME’s while larger corporations can help themselves by including SMEs in their value chain.

He said well-managed and healthy SMEs can provide employment for the skilled and unskilled populace and young people who are always at the core of the unemployed category.

He, therefore, urged government to create a friendlier regulatory environment for SMEs through capacity building and provision of tax incentives.

    Read: Vodafone to support SMEs

He also wants government to implement inclusive and favourable reforms, including procurement of more goods and services for the public through SMEs.

Prof Dwomor, who believes that SMEs provide goods and services tailored to local needs at affordable cost implored government to involve SMEs in identifying the necessary reforms.

Delivering a keynote address on behalf of acting Vice-Chancellor of KsTU, Prof Mike A. Acheampong, at a seminar on entrepreneurship held in Kumasi on Friday, 12 October 2018, Prof Dwomor, argued that for SMEs to be sustainable and deliver the expected outcome, larger corporations should be oriented to build supply chain capacities for SMEs as well as rationalise procurement procedures aimed at strengthening local distribution networks.

Read: Financial Institutions must be trusted for the economy to thrive

He said SMEs can assume their rightful place as the pivot for growth and expansion of the economy if government and larger corporations continue to provide them with financial services.

The event brought together students, entrepreneurs, and other business leaders to share ideas on how to increase productivity and sustain profitable ventures.

It also served as a platform for networking and dissemination of business development strategies and programmes.

  • AFCON 2019: Kenya widens Ghana gap after comprehensive home victory over Ethiopia

The Harambee Stars now sit four points ahead of the Black Stars after a win over the Antelopes on Sunday.

Kenya are now four points ahead of Ghana atop of Group F of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying following a win over Ethiopia on Sunday.

The Harambee Stars moved closer to securing a place at next year’s continental gathering with a 3-0 home triumph over the Antelopes at the Moi International Sports Centre in Kasarani, Nairobi.

Read: Kenya officials charged in Olympic corruption inquiry

Goals from Michael Olunga, Eric Johana Omondi and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Victor Wanyama (pen) sealed the win.

The match came four days after the Harambee Stars held the Antelopes to a scoreless draw in their first leg in Bahir Dar.

Tied on four points with Ethiopia and a point above third-placed Ghana and bottom-positioned Sierra Leone ahead of Sunday’s matchday four fixture, Kenya have taken their tally to seven, having now played two games more than the Black Stars in Group F.

Read: 2019 AFCON qualifiers: Kenya move to top of Group F standings

The standings, though, have to do with cancelled double-header between Ghana and Sierra due to the latter’s recent Fifa ban from football.

With Caf ruling out rescheduling of the games, Ghana could be declared winners of the matches and handed six points, a scenario that will take the Black Stars to top of the table with nine points without having kicked a ball on matchdays three and four.

Alternatively, Sierra Leone could be completely taken out of the qualifying series, thereby leaving only three teams in the group. In the case of the latter, the results of Sierra Leone’s two games played in the group thus far (against Kenya and Ethiopia) will be nullified, a situation that will also have a bearing on the outlook of the group.

Caf is expected to give a declaration on the status of the group anytime soon.

Ghana, meanwhile, return to action next month with an away trip to Ethiopia.

  • Germany ‘broke apart’ in Nations League loss to Dutch – Joachim Low

Germany “broke apart” in their 3-0 Nations League defeat by the Netherlands, says boss Joachim Low.

Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk headed the opener while Memphis Depay and Georginio Wijnaldum added late goals to leave Germany bottom of Group A1.

It was the sixth defeat in 10 games for Low’s side, who went out at the group stage of the World Cup in Russia.

“After conceding, you could see that recent results have led to a lack of confidence,” he said.

Read: Messi goes to the toilet too much to be a leader Maradona

“Why are we not scoring? That’s difficult to answer, we have clear chances.”

Low’s Germany, who won the World Cup in 2014, have only one point from their opening two Nations League matches.

They face world champions and group leaders France in the competition in Paris on Tuesday.

Saturday’s loss in Amsterdam was the first time Germany have lost by three goals to the Dutch.

Van Dijk reacted first to nod in from close range after Ryan Babel had headed against the crossbar following Depay’s right-wing corner.

Depay added a second in the 86th minute from a quick counter-attack after being set up by Quincy Promes, before Wijnaldum sealed the win in injury time with a low shot into the bottom corner.

“Breaking apart like that in the last 10 minutes is not good,” Low added.

Striker Timo Werner said: “We missed out on scoring when we had the chances to do so.

“Then there is this corner which hits the bar and is then turned in. That was a punch in our stomach.”

Since the end of their World Cup qualifying campaign in October 2017, Germany have won only three of their past 12 matches – a 2-1 success in the finals against Sweden and two victories in friendlies against Saudi Arabia and Peru.

After van Dijk’s opener, the Dutch had chances to double their lead but Wijnaldum shot wide and Depay headed off target.

Manchester City forward Leroy Sane, on as a second-half substitute, should have equalised but he dragged a shot just wide when unmarked eight yards out.

That miss proved costly, as with Germany pushing for an equaliser, they gave the ball away and Promes played in Depay for the second goal.

The former Manchester United winger then hit the crossbar, before Wijnaldum struck again.

The Netherlands, managed by former Everton boss Ronald Koeman, are second in the three-nation group after beginning their campaign with a 2-1 defeat by France in September.

  • Airports Company profits drop by 43%

The Ghana Airports Company Ltd (GACL) recorded a 43% decline in its profit for the year 2017.

Profit after tax of the Ghana Airports Company Limited as of 2017 stood at GH¢87 million compared to GH¢153 million in 2016.

Speaking at the 6th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the GACL, Managing Director John Attafuah said moving forward the company would take steps to prepare its accounts in dollars.

Mr Attafuah said, “The company continues to operate profitably with a performance of about GH¢87 million profit before tax, which is lower by 43% compared to the previous year. Essentially, operational cost and currency exchange losses contributed to low profit.”

This, according to the Airports Company, was as a result of an increase in international and domestic movement in 2017 following the entrance of Air France and Mid Africa, as well as the extension of routes by domestic carrier Africa World Airlines and increased frequencies by Air France and Tap Portugal.

Passenger throughput showed an improvement of 5.3% in 2017 compared to 2016, growing from 2,381,917 in 2016 to 2,509,339.

The increase was as a result of the removal of Value-Added Tax (VAT) component from domestic airfares in the first quarter of 2017.

  • Saglemi housing project is ‘white elephant’- Atta Akyea

Works and Housing Minister Samuel Atta Akyea has described as “white elephant”, a 1500 housing unit built under the Saglemi Housing project at Tsopoli in the Ningo-Prampram District in the Greater Accra Region.

According to him, the housing units which were inaugurated by former president John Mahama in 2016 were without basic amenities like water, electricity and drainage systems.

The Minister imputed criminality to the project which he said has suffered major deficit.

“The Seglemi structure that we see over there is a huge trouble. If we should go into why it has not been inhabited we will go into crisis. I can assure you there is a challenge in terms of how the monies were faithfully applied to the project, matters that the Attorney-General would have to look at and EOCO to investigate.

“They do not have the requisite infrastructure and amenities for people to go and inhabit the place. They do not have water facilities and decent drainage systems and therefore the money intended for the project has been spirited away with this kind of white elephant we are seeing,” he said.

The $180million project, the first phase of which was inaugurated in 2016 has been without life almost two years after they were inaugurated.

It involved 1,500 units out of the projected 5000 housing units, a project described as ambitious and could reduce the gaping housing deficit in the country.

The 300-acre housing facility is said to have one to three bedroom apartments for low-income earners.

But the project has been abandoned.

The Housing Minister said a lot has to be done to make the housing unit habitable.

“We need to bring the proceedings to a close, get credible people to complete the structures and when we have the amenities like water, electricity and sewerage systems people could go over and inhabit it,” he said.

  • Branson halts $1bn Saudi investment talks

Sir Richard Branson has halted talks over $1bn Saudi investment in Virgin space firms after the disappearance of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

Sir Richard has also suspended directorships in two tourism projects.

Mr Khashoggi, a noted critic of the Saudi government, disappeared when visiting the Saudi consulate in Istanbul last week.

Turkish police told US officials they have evidence that proves Mr Khashoggi was killed, the Washington Post said.

Read: 40 killed in Uganda mudslides

In a statement, Sir Richard said: “What has reportedly happened in Turkey around the disappearance of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, if proved true, would clearly change the ability of any of us in the West to do business with the Saudi Government.

“We have asked for more information from the authorities in Saudi and to clarify their position in relation to Mr Khashoggi.”

Turkish authorities in Istanbul have audio and video evidence that supports that the journalist was murdered by Saudi agents inside the consulate, the Washington Post reported.

Saudi Arabia has denied killing Mr Khashoggi and has insisted that he left the consulate shortly after he arrived.

What investment talks have been suspended?

Virgin was in talks with Saudi sovereign wealth fund the Public Investment Fund about a proposed $1bn investment in space companies Virgin Galactic and Virgin Orbit.

Talks have been going on since October 2017, when the Saudi intention to invest was agreed by Prince Mohammad bin Salman Al-Saud, Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, and Sir Richard.

The Virgin investment plan was part of Saudi efforts to diversify its economy away from its dependence on oil profits.

Who is missing journalist Jamal Khashoggi?

Mr Khashoggi, a well-known Saudi journalist, was once an adviser to the Saudi royal family, but fell sharply out of favour with the Saudi government and went into self-imposed exile.

After an international career, he left Saudi Arabia in 2017 for the US, and began writing a column for the Washington Post.

In his column, Mr Kashoggi said he had gone into exile because he feared being arrested, and that there had been an apparent crackdown on dissidents under Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

In his last column, he criticised Saudi involvement in the Yemen conflict.

Why did Mr Khashoggi visit the Istanbul consulate?

He first visited the consulate on 28 September to get a document certifying a divorce, but he was told he would have to come back.

Mr Khashoggi returned on 2 October and arrived at 13:14 local time for his appointment, which was scheduled for 13:30.

He reportedly told friends that he had been treated “very warmly” on his first visit and reassured them that he would not face any problems.
