  • Sierra Leone vs Ghana games will not be rescheduled

The Confederation of African Football (Caf) has called off Sierra Leone’s back-to-back Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches with Ghana.

Caf said the matches were cancelled as Sierra Leone did not meet conditions for the lifting of the Fifa-imposed suspension of the country’s FA.

African football’s governing body has also confirmed that the matches will not be rescheduled.

However, Caf is yet to clarify whether the games will be awarded to Ghana.

It also added that it will decide on Sierra Leone’s final two qualifiers against Kenya and Ethiopia at a later date.

“For the two last qualifying days for the Total African Cup of Nations 2019, the Caf Executive Committee will decide in due course depending on the Federation of Sierra Leone statement,” Caf wrote in an e-mail.

Fifa acted because of sanctions imposed on the SLFA President Isha Johansen and General Secretary Christopher Kamara.

They have denied any wrongdoing and Fifa demanded their reinstatement.

Caf said the games had been “cancelled as SLFA did not meet the conditions stipulated in the letter sent by Caf on Fifa’s decision to suspend the federation”.

On Tuesday, Fifa rejected a request by the SLFA – signed by Isha Johansen in her capacity as President – to lift the suspension imposed last week.

The request was made after an emergency meeting of SLFA and sport ministry officials – featuring both excluded officials – which was aimed at trying to convince Fifa to rescind the ban.

But Fifa’s basic demand that the President and General Secretary be reinstated has not been met, leading to the cancellation of the matches.

  • Chief Justice pushes for non-custodial sentencing

Chief Justice, Sophia Akuffo, has delivered a keynote address at a multi-stakeholder conference on the Zero Draft Noncustodial Sentencing Bill.

The conference, held on Wednesday, October 10, 2018 in Accra, was under the theme, “Consolidating efforts to enrich the Zero Draft Noncustodial Sentencing Bill.”

It brought together key stakeholders from the Ghana Police Service, Ghana Prisons Service, Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), civil society, Ministry of the Interior, the Judiciary, among others.

It was aimed at educating stakeholders about the Bill and encouraging government to embrace it.

Read: Chilling account of mother, daughters languishing in jail for stealing corn

Perfector of Sentiments (POS) Foundation, which organized the conference, described noncustodial sentence or alternative sentence as punishment given by a court of law that does not involve a prison term.

Over the last 15 years, there has been heightened interest in the development of alternative sentences in Ghana and beyond.

The Chief Justice, in her address, encouraged all stakeholders whose inputs are critical for the passage of the bill to ensure that the draft is more specific.

She said that their deliberations should take into account issues of human rights and social reforms and the objectives of criminal justice.

A widow (name withheld), who claimed to be a mother of five and serving a three-month prison term at the Nsawam Prison, was brought to the conference to explain why she was jailed alongside her mother and sister, who is a nursing mother.

She stated that her sister, who has six kids, was also jailed three months after they were accused of stealing corn from a farm.

According to her, they had gone to the farm just to gather the corn leftovers after harvesting to feed their children but were arrested.

“The judge asked my sister to pay an amount of GHC350 to save us from jail,” she added.

Minister of the Interior, Ambrose Derry, in a statement read on his behalf, bemoaned overcrowding in prisons across the country and its associated costs.

He indicated, for instance, that the Nsawam Prison has an overcrowding rate of over 300 percent.

According to him, the Nsawam Prison was built to house about 890 inmates, but now accommodates around 3,480 prisoners, adding that there was about 52 percent overcrowding rate nationwide.

He disclosed that his ministry was in the process of submitting the draft bill to Cabinet for consideration.

POS Foundation said the time has come for the Non-custodial Sentencing Bill to be passed to reduce congestion in prisons nationwide.

  • Sarkodie speaks on ‘stolen car’

The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service has begun investigations into a case in which the ace Ghanaian rapper, Michael Addo, known in showbiz as Sarkodie, is alleged to have bought a stolen car.

The police said Sarkodie assigned his agents to register his infinity saloon car at the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), but it turned out that the police had been looking for that vehicle for some time now because it was a stolen car.

According to the Public Relations Officer of the CID, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Joseph Benefo Darkwa, Sarkodie was invited by the police to assist in investigations into the case.

He said while Sarkodie’s agents were going through the registration process, DVLA officials realized that the said car had been reported stolen and so they alerted the police.

ASP Darkwa said based on the information from the DVLA, Sarkodie was invited to the CID Headquarters to assist in investigations.

He said Sarkodie honoured the invitation and reported himself at the CID Headquarters, in the company of his lawyer. According to the police, Sarkodie had been granted bail

    Lawyer for Sarkodie

Meanwhile, when Sarkodie’s lawyer, Mr Moses Foh-Amoaning, was contacted, he denied the police claim and explained that in 2013 the rapper had bought an Infinity saloon car from one Ishmael Amponsah, also known as Papa.

He said Sarkodie paid Gh?30,000 for the car and was given all the original documents covering it

According to him, Sarkodie had no immediate use of the car and he, therefore, parked it in his house from 2013 to date.

He said later Sarkodie signed on a new artist and gave him the car.

    Registration of car

Mr Foh-Amoaning said Sarkodie sent two of his assigns to take the car, which had been sitting in the garage for some time, to the DVLA for registration.

He said while going through the process, the assigns were informed that the car had been listed as a stolen vehicle from the Auto Theft Unit of the CID.

The assigns reported back to Sarkodie, who called his lawyer and they went to the CID Headquarters to verify the claim by DVLA officials.

    Auto Theft Unit

He said at the Auto Theft Unit, the two were shown a petition written by Dominic Afful, who is Papa’s brother-in-law.

The lawyer said Sarkodie then provided the original documents for the police and even called Papa to inform him about the turn of events.

Read: I have never charged any of my friends for collabos Sarkodie

According to Mr Foh-Amoaning, Sarkodie told the police that it was a family issue and that the car had not been stolen.

He said Papa, who is now in the United States of America (USA), called the police to explain to them that the car had been brought down to Ghana by his brother whose name he gave only as Johnny but that it was cleared at the Tema Port by Afful, who is married to Papa’s sister.

    Family issue

He said Afful was annoyed that his wife had conspired with her brother, without his (Afful’s) knowledge, to sell the car and so he reported the matter to police.

Mr Foh-Amoaning indicated that Sarkodie had told Papa that he was no longer interested in the car and so Papa should pay him back his money and resolve the family issue, to which Papa agreed.

He said he and his client had not been invited by the police but that they only showed up at the Auto Theft Unit following the information from the DVLA. Investigations are ongoing.

  • Ronaldo: ‘Allegations of rape based on completely fabricated documents’

Documents concerning rape allegations made against Cristiano Ronaldo have been “completely fabricated”, according to the player’s lawyer.

Ronaldo, 33, denies assaulting Kathryn Mayorga at a Las Vegas hotel in 2009.

Mayorga says she was attacked by the Portuguese footballer in a hotel room in the US city that year.

A statement from Ronaldo’s lawyer Peter Christiansen reiterated the Juventus forward “vehemently denies all accusations in this civil action”.

Read: Driver who picked up the woman that accused Cristiano Ronaldo of rape speaks

Ronaldo previously dismissed the claim, first reported in Germany’s Der Spiegel, as “fake news” and his representatives said he would take legal action against the weekly magazine.

Christiansen said a “media outlet irresponsibly” based its reports on “stolen and easily manipulated digital documents” of which “significant parts were altered and/or completely fabricated”.

Der Spiegel said Mayorga, 34, filed a report with Las Vegas police shortly after the alleged incident.

In 2010, she reportedly reached an out-of-court settlement with Ronaldo involving a $375,000 (£288,000) payment for agreeing never to go public with the allegations.

Christiansen says in a statement his client’s position continues to be that “what happened in 2009 in Las Vegas was completely consensual”.

The lawyer says Ronaldo does not deny that he agreed to enter into an agreement, but “the reasons that led him to do so are at least to be distorted”.

The statement added: “This agreement is by no means a confession of guilt.

“What happened was simply that Cristiano Ronaldo merely followed the advice of his advisors in order to put an end to the outrageous accusations made against him, in order precisely to avoid attempts, such as those we are now witnessing, to destroy a reputation built thanks to hard work, athletic ability and behavioural correction.

“Unfortunately, it is now involved in the type of litigation that is very common in the United States.”

Christiansen added: “Although Cristiano Ronaldo is accustomed to media attention, inherent in the fact that he is a famous person, it is absolutely deplorable that the media continue to propagate and stimulate an intentional defamation campaign based on stolen and easily manipulated digital documents.

“Cristiano Ronaldo has mandated his lawyers in the United States and Europe to deal with all legal aspects and expresses full confidence that the truth will prevail, despite the corruption of counter-information, and in which the laws of Nevada will be enforced and respected.”

The statement also claims documents allegedly containing statements by Ronaldo are “pure inventions”.

He added: “So that there are no doubts: Cristiano Ronaldo vehemently denies all the accusations in this civil action, in consistency with what he has done in the last nine years.

“The documents that allegedly contain statements by Mr Ronaldo and were reproduced in the media are pure inventions.

“By 2015, dozens of entities (including law firms) in different parts of Europe were attacked and their electronic data stolen by a cyber criminal.

“This hacker tried to sell such information, and a media outlet irresponsibly ended up publishing some of the stolen documents, significant parts of which were altered and/or completely fabricated.

“Once again, for the avoidance of doubt, Cristiano Ronaldo’s position has always been, and continues to be, that what happened in 2009 in Las Vegas was completely consensual.”

  • Ethiopia Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed does press-ups with protesting soldiers

Ethiopia’s prime minister has done press-ups with dozens of protesting soldiers, who had marched into his office in the capital, Addis Ababa.

Abiy Ahmed was unhappy that soldiers had brought weapons and ordered them to do 10 press-ups.

They were among several hundred protesting soldiers who entered his office grounds to demand a pay rise.

The situation caused alarm, leading to road closures in the area and the internet to be shut off for hours.

Many Ethiopians wondered whether this amounted to a serious security breach, says BBC Amharic’s Jibat Tamirat.

However, the smiles on the soldiers’ faces as they performed the press-ups suggest the prime minister succeeded in defusing the situation amicably:

    What happened exactly?

The soldiers began massing outside the presidential compound on Wednesday morning, causing a partial road block in the area, the BBC’s Amharic service reports.

Around half of them were armed with Kalashnikovs and sniper rifles.

They were told by the guards that they could not enter the sprawling grounds with their guns.

Contrary to previous reports, the soldiers were disarmed outside the compound. They were only allowed into the premises in the late afternoon and the road block was lifted.

After meeting the soldiers on Wednesday, Mr Abiy said he would “look into their complaints” but stressed that even civil servants had to make do with low salaries as the country had limited resources.

“We have to use the money for development purposes,” he said according to a statement. “We can pay everyone higher salaries but we will end up [with] no development.”

    Who is Abiy Ahmed?

He came to power in April after three years of protest led by ethnic Oromos, who were demanding an end to what they considered their political and economic marginalization.

The prime minister, who is Oromo himself, has passed a series of massive reforms, making peace with neighbouring Eritrea and releasing the state’s tight grip on parts of the economy.

He has released thousands of political prisoners and unbanned groups, including the Oromo Liberation Front (OLF), which had been labelled terrorist organisations.

  • Zimbabwe’s KFC ‘has no money to buy chickens’

Leading fast-food chains in Zimbabwe have shut their doors as the cash crunch in the country worsens – just two months after President Emmerson Mnangagwa won elections.

KFC put up notices at its branches in the capital, Harare, and the second city, Bulawayo, saying they would remain closed “during these difficult times” until further notice.

“This is due to the fact that we are unable to source stock from our suppliers as they require US dollars. We are doing everything possible to resume trade as soon as possible,” the notice said.

St Elmos pizza outlet said it had shut its branches for the same reason, adding that it would use the time to do some deep cleaning and repairs:

Chicken Inn ran out of chicken on Tuesday, and it was unclear when they will get supplies again, the state-run Chronicle newspaper reported.

Some phramacies were also shut in Bulawayo, it added.

Last week, Zimbabwe’s Financial Gazette newspaper reported that many retail shops were running out of some essential goods because of foreign currency shortages.

Zimbabwe abandoned its own currency in 2009, adopting the use of foreign cash, including the US dollar.

The government issued its own version of dollars called “bond notes” in 2016 to ease the continuing cash shortage, but they have rapidly lost their value.

  • Cost of future Power Purchasing Agreements will be pegged around 10 cents – Bawumia

Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has indicated that government has, as part of effort in making sure that Ghanaians pay less for power, resolved that, henceforth, the cost component of any agreement it will sign for electricity generation will be pegged around 10 cent per kilowatts hour (kWh).

He noted that despite the reduction in the cost of electricity between 10 and 30 % this year by the government, cost of electricity in Ghana, is still on the higher side as compared to other counties in the sub-region.

This, he explained, is because the power purchase agreements signed by the previous government with electricity generation companies cost as high as 18 cents per kWh.

“As a government, we inherited a number of Power Purchasing Agreements (PPAs) for the supply of renewable energy…some with tariffs as high as US18 cents . It is the goal of the government to bring down the cost of electricity generation to under US10 cents, in order to make electricity affordable to Ghanaians.

“One of the key challenges to be made, going forward, is that the Ministry of Energy and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) have been tasked to use competitive tendering procedure for the procurement of renewable energy electricity. Under this scheme, the winner of the tender will be guaranteed a Power Purchasing Agreement, connection agreement and government enhancement to make it possible for the winner to easily reach financial close and ensure that the nation gets value for money in the procurement of renewable energy,” he added.

Speaking at the 4th Renewable Energy Fair organised by the Energy Commission, in Accra, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia said government is concerned about the cost of electricity, hence, it is taking steps to increase renewable energy generation into Ghana’s energy mix so that electricity becomes affordable.

He said government, in considering the importance of renewable energy, has supported the Volta River Authority (VRA) to establish 12 megawatts of solar power in Upper West and 75 megawatts wind power in Anloga in the Volta Region.

Touching on the theme: ‘Exploiting Renewable Energy Resources at the District Level’, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia urged the Energy Commission to assist various MMDAs to identify renewable energy sources in their jurisdictions and develop them to boost power generation to support government initiatives such as the Planting for Food and Jobs and One District, One Factory.

“One key advantage of the renewable energy is that it enables access to electricity for communities, especially farming communities and farms that are located far from national grid.

“Access to off grid electricity means that they can participate in wealth creation through their farming and related activities of agro processing. In the case of Planting for Food and Jobs, for example, renewable energy, in the form of solar or wind power water pumps, could be used to guarantee all year-round farming,” he concluded.
