  • Amazon raises wages for lower-paid workers

Online retailing giant Amazon is raising pay for hundreds of thousands of workers in the US and the UK.

Amazon’s lowest paid US workers will receive $15 an hour. In the UK, pay will rise from £8.20 an hour in London to £10.50, while outside London the rate rises from £8 an hour to £9.50.

The move will benefit 250,000 workers in the US, 17,000 in the UK and tens of thousands of seasonal workers.

Amazon is one of the biggest companies in the world, worth about $1 trillion.

Read: Amazon chief Jeff Bezos gives $2bn to help the homeless

However, it has been attacked by campaigners – and US President Trump – for the amount of tax it pays.

The company has also been criticised for its employment practices, with complaints over working conditions in its warehouses.

Its founder, Jeff Bezos, is the world’s richest man, with a fortune estimated at some $150bn.
    ‘It’s a start’
The new pay rates start on 1 November, and will apply to all staff, full and part-time, as well as temporary and seasonal workers.

Tim Roache, the general secretary of the UK’s GMB union, welcomed the announcement but said more needed to be done: “Given their owner is the richest man in the world you’d think he could see fit to dig a little deeper, but it’s a start.

“Now they’re paying the living wage, maybe Amazon could pay their taxes too, and do something to improve the horrendous working conditions people endure in their warehouses. GMB has heard horrific tales from the shop floor. Nearly 90% of our Amazon members say they experience constant pain at work.”

The union said Amazon did not allow it to operate under its roof.

The increase in Amazon workers’ wages coincides with a cross-US movement by retail unions to raise wages to a minimum of $15 an hour, the so-called “Fight for Fifteen” movement.

Already rival retailers have had to raise their wages. Target increased its minimum hourly wage last year to $11, with a pledge to lift it to $15 an hour by the end of 2020.

Walmart, the world’s largest retailer and private employer, also raised its minimum wage to $11 an hour earlier this year.

    ‘We listened’

Amazon said it would press for a change to the US Federal minimum wage level, which is currently $7.25.

Read: Apple becomes 1st private company worth $1 trillion

Amazon spokesman Jay Carney said: “We will be working to gain Congressional support for an increase in the federal minimum wage. The current rate of $7.25 was set nearly a decade ago.”

In the UK, the legal minimum wage is £7.83 an hour for over-25s and £7.38 for those aged 21 to 24.

The retailer also said it would phase out one of its share incentive schemes, adding that the “net effect of this change and the new higher cash compensation is significantly more total compensation for employees… and with more predictability”.

Mr Bezos said: “We listened to our critics, thought hard about what we wanted to do, and decided we want to lead.

“We’re excited about this change and encourage our competitors and other large employers to join us.”

  • Nafta: US and Canada reach new trade deal

The US and Canada have reached a deal to reform the North American Free Trade Agreement (Nafta) after last minute negotiations.

The deal is said to involve more US access to Canada’s dairy market and a cap on Canada’s car exports to the US.

Nafta governs more than $1tr (£767bn) in trade between the two and Mexico.

Mexico and the US have already agreed new terms, and only recently it looked as if Canada could be excluded in a final agreement.

“Today, Canada and the United States reached an agreement, alongside Mexico, on a new, modernized trade agreement for the 21st Century: the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement,” US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland said in a joint statement.

The agreement “will give our workers, farmers, ranchers and businesses a high-standard trade agreement that will result in freer markets, fairer trade and robust economic growth in our region.”

What is in the new deal?

The joint US-Canada statement did not include details of the revised terms. However, the deal is expected to contain key provisions on Canada’s dairy industry and car exports to the US.

US farmers will have access to about 3.5% of Canada’s dairy market, Reuters reported, citing sources.

Canada is also reported to have secured some protections for automobile industry against potential US tariffs.

    How the deal was reached

The US made a deal with Mexico in August, but relations with Canada over the trade pact had become increasingly strained in recent weeks.

The Trump administration set Sunday as a deadline for Canada to strike a deal.

The US has also been embroiled in a trade war on several fronts this year. US President Donald Trump imposed taxes on imports from Mexico and Canada, and the two countries retaliated.

A protectionist policy under the Mr Trump has seen the US forge ahead with individual trade deals, rejecting bigger multi-lateral trade agreements and posing a challenge to decades of global free trade.

  • Indonesia salutes air traffic controller who gave his life for others

An air traffic controller is being hailed as a hero following a devastating earthquake and tsunami in Indonesia that killed hundreds of people.

Indonesian solders were on hand in full uniform Saturday to carry the coffin of Anthonius Gunawan Agung.

The 21-year-old did not budge from his post in the control tower at Mutiara SIS Al-Jufrie Airport Palu as it began to shake from a 6.1 magnitude tremor, followed by a 7.5 magnitude earthquake on Friday.

As his colleagues evacuated the building for safety, Agung stayed behind to ensure that a Batik Air flight had taken off safely.

As the plane became airborne, Agung, believing the tower would collapse, jumped from a fourth floor window. He was rushed to hospital with internal injuries and a broken leg.

Agung died before a helicopter could take him to another hospital for specialty care on Saturday morning. He was just a month shy of his 22nd birthday.

“Batik 6231 runway 33 clear for take off. This was his last transmission to me then we replied,” Captain Ricosetta Mafella, pilot of Batik Air flight wrote in a post on Instagram that included a picture of Agung. “Thank you for keeping me and guarding me till I’m safely airborne.”

Agung is being hailed as a hero by his former employers — who refer to him on Twitter as Anthonius the Great — and across Indonesia, as the nation comes to grips with yet another devastating earthquake and tsunami that killed more than 800 people, with thousands still missing.

“We felt a deep heartbreak, may God give Anthonius the best place beside him, along with other victims of Donggala earthquake,” Yohanes Sirait, spokesman for AirNav Indonesia, the agency that oversees aircraft navigation, said in a statement.

According to the agency, Agung’s body was flown from Palu to Makassar, in the south of the Sulawesi island at the request of his family.

  • Las Vegas woman sues Cristiano Ronaldo, accuses him of rape

A Las Vegas woman has publicly come forward with rape allegations against soccer superstar Cristiano Ronaldo.

Kathryn Mayorga says the Portuguese footballer raped her in a Las Vegas hotel in 2009 while she repeatedly screamed no, according to a lawsuit filed Friday in Clark County.

After the attack, according to the lawsuit, Ronaldo apologized, “stating he was sorry, he was usually a gentleman.” The lawsuit alleges that Ronaldo himself told his team of fixers that “she said ‘no’ and ‘stop’ several times.”

Mayorga’s lawsuit accuses Ronaldo and his team of taking advantage of her fragile emotional state to coerce her into signing a settlement and nondisclosure agreement in 2009. She claims she received $375,000 in exchange for her silence; her lawsuit seeks to void the settlement and agreement.

Read: Bill Cosby sentenced to state prison for sexual assault

When reached by CNN, Mayorga’s attorney declined to comment beyond what was said in the lawsuit.

Ronaldo’s representatives denied the rape allegations when German publication Der Spiegel first reported them in 2017. After the outlet broke news of the lawsuit Friday in an interview with Mayorga, Ronaldo’s lawyer called the reporting “blatantly illegal.”

“It violates the personal rights of our client Cristiano Ronaldo in an exceptionally serious way. This is an inadmissible reporting of suspicions in the area of privacy,” lawyer Christian Schertz said in a statement.
Ronaldo appeared to dispute the claims in an Instagram live post on Friday: “What they said today, fake — fake news. They want to promote by my name. It’s normal. They want to be famous — to say my name. Yeah but it’s part of the job. I’m (a) happy man and all, all good.”

    The alleged attack

Mayorga met Ronaldo at the Palms Hotel and Casino on June 13, 2009, the complaint says. Ronaldo invited her, her friend and others to his penthouse suite. According to Mayorga’s lawsuit, Ronaldo asked her to join the group in a jacuzzi and gave her shorts and a T-shirt to wear.

As Mayorga changed in a bathroom, she said Ronaldo approached her, exposed himself and asked her for oral sex. Mayorga said she refused, but that Ronaldo pulled her into a bedroom and raped her as she screamed, “No, no, no.”

The same day, she reported the incident to police and went to the hospital for a sexual assault examination, the lawsuit says.

Initially, she refused to identify Ronaldo to police, fearing public humiliation, her complaint says. Weeks later, when she named him in a police interview, a detective told her that she would be subjected to retaliation and her actions portrayed as extortion attempts, according to the lawsuit. A nurse who examined her said the same thing, she says in the lawsuit.

“The psychological trauma of the sexual assault, the fear of public humiliation and retaliation and the reiteration of those fears by law enforcement and medical providers left plaintiff terrified and unable to act or advocate for herself,” the lawsuit claims.

Meanwhile, Ronaldo had retained a team of fixers that the lawsuit calls “personal reputation protection specialists,” who are unnamed defendants. The lawsuit alleges they monitored Mayorga, her friends and family as well as law enforcement to “develop and implement a strategy” to prevent or delay public disclosure of the allegations and criminal prosecution of Ronaldo. The team communicated with Mayorga’s lawyer at the time, who agreed to private mediation with them. Mayorga’s lawyer did not follow up with Las Vegas Police, according to the lawsuit.

    The settlement

The lawsuit accuses Ronaldo of battery for sodomizing her. Additional claims against him and his representatives include intentional infliction of emotional distress, coercion and fraud, and abuse of a vulnerable person.

In mediation discussions, Ronaldo’s representatives led her to believe they were attempting to compensate her for her injuries, and that agreeing to the settlement precluded her from cooperating with police. In reality, the lawsuit claims, his team was attempting to obstruct a criminal investigation and erode Mayorga’s credibility, thus diminishing her chances of pursuing a claim for civil damages. The allegations form the basis of Mayorga’s claims of coercion and fraud, racketeering and civil conspiracy, and abuse of process.

Read: TV host says why she kept silent on her alleged rape

Her family, who lives in Las Vegas, attended mediation to provide her with emotional support and advice, but they were excluded from discussions by Ronaldo’s team and the mediator, according to the lawsuit.

Knowing she was a “vulnerable person,” his team reinforced the threat of public humiliation if she or anyone else publicly disclosed her allegations or cooperated with law enforcement, her complaint says. They threatened to portray her as having consented to sex and then making a false claim so she could extort Ronaldo for money.

Mayorga described mediation “as re-experiencing the sexual assault,” an ordeal marked by “extreme fearfulness, complete helplessness and eventually a sense of passivity where she would do anything just to be able to leave/escape/avoid revisiting the sexual assault by continuing the mediation,” the lawsuit says.

    The aftermath

Over the years that Mayorga maintained her silence, her emotional health suffered under the weight of post-traumatic stress disorder, according to the lawsuit. She says she struggled to maintain relationships or hold down a job.

Then, a sports website leaked copies of documents and communications between Ronaldo and his team relevant to the mediation to Der Spiegel, which published a detailed account of the allegations. Mayorga’s lawsuit claims that she obtained them and handed them over to Las Vegas police in August. The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department did not reply to a request for comment over the weekend.

One of the purported documents, quoted in the lawsuit, calls the settlement “incredibly favorable” given the nature of Mayorga’s claims and the potential impact they could have on his personal and professional reputation, including endorsement opportunities. And, the document says, it avoided the potentially “catastrophic effect” of not letting him travel in the United States.

Ronaldo’s team forcefully denied Der Spiegel’s account and threatened legal action against the publication. They called the account a “journalistic fiction” that contained “unattributable and unsubstantiated allegations” that were “untruthful and false,” according to the lawsuit. Their denials form the defamation claims in Mayorga’s lawsuit.

Mayorga did not participate in the article and she was not named in it. But she later told Der Spiegel that she had followed the online reaction closely. She took notice of comments about the athlete’s desirability, she told the magazine, including statements to the effect of, “As if Ronaldo even needs to rape a woman.”

Those statements mirrored thoughts she once had about Ronaldo, she told the magazine. But she wasn’t going to be silent any more.

  • CAF reach deal to renegotiate controversial broadcast contract with Lagardere

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has reached a deal to renegotiate a contentious television and marketing rights deal with Lagardere Sports.

The commercial partnership with French media firm is now a subject of re-examination after several complaints and concerns over terms of the deal.

The decision comes as a massive boost for football officials in Africa as the 12-year deal with Lagardere was widely condemned right across the continent.

The new leadership of CAF, under the Presidency of Ahmad Ahmad, has agreed that they will spend the next weeks to reach tweak the terms of the contract.

Read: Malawi FA chief Nyamilandu elected to FIFA Council

It is expected that new terms of the contract will be announced by the end of the year.

This is in fulfiment of Ahmad’s promise that the deal signed under previous leader Issa Hayatou would be renegotiated after anger from federations over the terms of the contract.

The 12-year media and marketing deal signed between Caf and Lagardere in 2015 is one of the controversial issues that has dominated headlines in African football.

The contract, entered into during the previous Caf regime led by Hayatou, is worth $1 billion.

The deal saw Lagardere securing media and marketing rights for all Caf tournaments, including the Africa Cup of Nations and Champions League.

When current Caf president Ahmed was elected into power two years ago, he promised to review the deal that has also attracted the competition authority in Egypt.

But with the possibility of running into a legal minefield, Caf leader Ahmad has adopted a more concialliary approach by convincing Lagardere to return to the table.

“We have agreed with Lagardere to sit and re-examine the terms of the contract. We will spend the next few weeks examining the deal and the concerns we have,” Ahmad said at the CAF General Assembly in Sharm El Sheikh on Sunday.

“By the end of the year we should a concrete information to send to our members regarding the deal with Lagardere.”

The deal with the French firm has courted huge controversies as Egypt’s Economic Court charged previous leading CAF figures of violating local anti-monopoly rules by signing the multi-million dollar broadcasting deal.

Hayatou and the then General Secretary of CAF Hicham El Amrani are standing trial over charges of violating the country’s competition law claiming it granted exclusive broadcasting rights to a single company without a tender.

The Egyptian Competition Authority (ECA) started to investigate the Lagardere deal in June 2016, prior to asserting – in January 2017 – that Caf had engaged in monopolistic practices that infringed local laws.

The deal gave Lagardere rights to a variety of African football competitions, including the flagship Africa Cup of Nations, from 2017 until 2028.

With Caf based in Cairo, Egyptian authorities maintain it is governed by local laws.

Hayatou and Amrani firmly reject accusations they committed any wrongdoing when signing a multi-million dollar deal with sports agency Lagardere in June 2015.

The Cairo Economic Court held several hearings in the case against Hayatou, who is accused of violating Egypt’s Competition Law in selling exclusive broadcast and sponsoring rights to Lagardère Sports.

The Egyptian Competition Authority (ECA) has accused Hayatou and the confederation’s Secretary-General Hisham El-Omrani of violating the competition law by granting exclusive broadcasting rights without a tender.

Dr. Mona El-Jarf, head of the Competition Protection and Prohibition of Monopolistic Practices Authority of Egypt, accused Hayatou and El Amrani of violating article 8 of paragraphs (a), (b) and (d) of Law 5 of the protecting competition and abuse of the exploitation rights.

This is in regards to the broadcast rights of the Africa Cup of Nations which was awarded to French company Lagardere Sport for 12 years from between 2017 and 2028 without offering it to other companies wishing to bid.

  • US ‘subsidizing’ Saudi, Asia militaries – Trump

President Donald Trump on Saturday complained that the US is “subsidizing” the military of Middle East ally Saudi Arabia, as well as Japan and South Korea.

The comment, at a West Virginia rally for local candidates of his Republican Party, follows similar jibes at European members of the NATO alliance.

  • Man Utd: Decision to be made after West Ham defeat – Rio Ferdinand

Manchester United “have big decisions” to make about the future of manager Jose Mourinho, according to former defender Rio Ferdinand.

The Red Devils’ 3-1 defeat at West Ham on Saturday made this their worst start to a top-flight season since 1989-90.

It is their third loss in seven league games and follows a home Carabao Cup exit to Championship side Derby.

“There will be conversations at the top level about the future of the manager and the squad,” Ferdinand told BT.

“The basics are not being done and something has to be said.

Read: Liverpool snatch late draw at Chelsea

“You can’t let a situation like this continue throughout the season – wars in the press, leaks, players on one side of the dressing room, Mourinho and his staff on the other. If that continues this will be one of the worst seasons in the club’s history.”

‘A war within the club’ – Scholes

West Ham’s victory at London Stadium was their biggest over Manchester United in 36 years, achieved through Felipe Anderson’s fifth-minute strike, a Victor Lindelof own goal and a simple finish from Marko Arnautovic after questionable defending.

Substitute Marcus Rashford had given the visitors hope when his smart finish from a corner reduced the arrears to 2-1, but former midfielder Paul Scholes said “the fight was just not there”.

“That was as bad as you’ve seen from a United team for a long time,” Scholes told BT Sport. “The attitude has been questioned before and it has to be questioned again. The hunger and desire to get amongst people wasn’t there.

“At this minute, this club is in a bit of a mess.

“Is this the end for the manager? I don’t know. Who’s going to get more out of this team? We just know at this moment in time it feels wrong.”

Analysis – ‘Sacking Mourinho would fly in face of Glazer ownership’
    BBC Sport’s Simon Stone

No sooner had the final whistle gone at London Stadium than the bookmakers were sending round the inevitable press releases stating Mourinho was the favourite to be the next manager to leave his job.

The reality is if that scenario unfolds, it would fly in the face of the Glazer family’s ownership of Manchester United.

While the reclusive American family, who never talk to the media about United, can be accused of many things, being knee-jerk is not one of them.

In the immediate aftermath of their takeover in 2005, Sir Alex Ferguson was in the process of trying to rebuild his team, which had fallen well behind Chelsea and Arsenal. The Glazers stuck with him.

Read: Africa declares support for FIFA President Infantino over re-election in 2019

David Moyes’ tenure was not brought to an end until United knew it was mathematically impossible to qualify for the Champions League, despite numerous awful results and even a plane flying over Old Trafford trailing a banner that demanded his exit.

When rumours circulated around Christmas 2015 that Louis van Gaal was about to be sacked, they proved to be false. It was only at the end of the season when, once again, United had not finished in the top four, that he was removed.

I was told earlier this week results would be the criterion Mourinho would be judged on. As bad as the defeat at West Ham was, I didn’t get the impression we were talking about one.

Who is at fault – manager or players?

Alexis Sanchez’s failure to score so far this season meant he did not even make the squad at London Stadium, with Anthony Martial replacing him in attack.

Midfielder Paul Pogba – who was told in midweek he would not captain the team again following his comments that his side need to “attack, attack, attack” at home, and was then involved in an apparent training-ground dispute with Mourinho – was replaced on 70 minutes after an ineffective display.

But it was in defence where there were most post-match questions.

Midfielder Scott McTominay, 21, started as part of a three-man backline, prompting Scholes to question whether it is the quality of the players at Mourinho’s disposal – not just the manager himself – to blame for their poor run of results.

“I wonder if the quality is there,” said Scholes. “That back four that finished the game – Ashley Young, Chris Smalling, McTominay, Luke Shaw – isn’t one that will get you anywhere near the top of the league.”

Ferdinand, winner of six Premier League titles and the Champions League with the club between 2002 and 2014, agreed but also questioned the players’ attitude.

“There is a lack of quality,” he said. “I’d question whether the players who have been brought in are good enough. But on top of that you have to get the players playing. I don’t see anyone shouting down people’s throats. There’s no intent to make life difficult for other players.

“As a footballer your DNA is about hard work and effort. I didn’t see that today. I didn’t see them make two or three passes in succession – that’s criminal. I don’t see enough players working hard to say to the manager ‘this is my place in the team’. You’ve got to work hard and grind and Man Utd didn’t.”

No complaints with players’ attitude – Mourinho
Mourinho said he could have “no complaints with the players’ attitude” but did question the quality of their play – as well as being unhappy with several of the officials’ key decisions.

“When you come here and you feel the team, not shaking, but with a lack of confidence, it’s important to have a positive start,” he told BBC Sport.

“We had the worst possible start, conceding a goal that was offside. The linesman made that mistake and we were punished.

“After that we had a positive reaction. We had good situations but then we conceded a goal which was a bit ridiculous to concede. Everyone knows Andriy Yarmolenko is is left-footed. We had Nemanja Matic one-on-one with him, we had Lindelof and Shaw just after him, but we were not able to put pressure on the ball. These are things their central defenders did, and Pedro Obiang and Declan Rice in front of them fought to keep the clean sheet.

“And then there was also another mistake, from the referee. Pablo Zabaleta pulls Rashford from behind, and their third goal kills it.

“When you are winning and full of confidence it’s the best vitamin you can have. Sometimes you score impossible goals.

“When the moment is not the best it looks like everything goes against you and today we can feel exactly like that. In the next match on Tuesday [against Valencia in the Champions League] the players have to be brave and strong and try to have a better start than today.”
