  • Liverpool snatch late draw at Chelsea

Substitute Daniel Sturridge scored a stunning equaliser a minute from time as Liverpool snatched a dramatic draw at Chelsea in the Premier League.

The hosts were on course to move level on points with leaders Manchester City when Eden Hazard raced clear to score his second goal of the week against the Reds.

Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino had shots cleared off the line as Liverpool – who started the game second in the table – pressed for an equaliser, and Hazard was denied by Allison at the other end.

But, as the clock ticked down, Sturridge had the final say – bending a beautiful strike into the top corner from 30 yards.

The draw ended Liverpool’s 100% start to the Premier League season – and they finished the day behind defending champions Manchester City, albeit only on goal difference. Chelsea are two points back in third.

Why both managers can be happy…
Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri and Liverpool counterpart Jurgen Klopp smiled and embraced warmly at the final whistle of a high-class encounter that left them with mixed emotions.

Sarri will have been disappointed to see Chelsea concede so late but will have taken much pleasure from aspects of a performance that confirmed they have the qualities to remain in the race at the top of the Premier League this season.

With this result on the back of a 2-1 win at Anfield in the Carabao Cup in midweek, Sarri can look back on a highly satisfactory start to his Chelsea reign.

Klopp will feel the negative of the end of Liverpool’s 100% start to the Premier League season – but he can reflect on a performance that resulted in so many chances created on opposing territory against a team they will rightly regard as close rivals in pursuit of the title.

He would have shaken his head in disbelief had Liverpool left Stamford Bridge empty-handed given the golden opportunities they let slip through their grasp. Liverpool, no matter how late they left it, deserved their point.

In the final reckoning, however, both Chelsea and Liverpool remain unbeaten with five and six league wins respectively – although the sight of Manchester City above them even after that superb opening is an ominous one.

  • I still support Mahama, not Kojo Bonsu – Sammy Gyamfi

The aspiring National Communications Officer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi has reaffirmed his decision to support former President John Mahama in his bid to be the flagbearer of the party.

According to him, he does not support Kojo Bonsu as speculated.

Mr. Bonsu paid a courtesy call on former President Jerry John Rawlings to inform him of his intention and to seek his blessing, just as most of the aspirants to the flagbearer slot have done.

Read: Support new executives for 2020 victory Mahama

Mr Rawlings tweeted on Friday, 28 September: “I received @KOJOBONSU10 and his team today. I wished him well. He has a determined spirit.#KojoBonsu2020”.

Bonsu has joined a raft of aspirants including former President John Mahama, former Minister of Trade and Industries Ekow Spio-Garbrah, former Greater Accra Regional Minister Prof Joshua Alabi, former CEO of the National Health Insurance Authority Sylvester Mensah, former Central Regional Minister Kweku Ricketts-Hagan, former aide to Mr Rawlings Goosie Tanoh, Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin, legal practitioner Elikplim Agbemava, businessman Nurudeen Iddrisu and Handyman Stephen Atubiga.

Some media platforms are said to have reported that Sammy Gyamfi who was the Spokesperson for Bonsu has endorsed him and even went ahead to congratulate him for his announcement.

But in a statement signed by Sammy Gyamfi, he indicated that no such statement has been authored by him and described it as malicious and false.

“I wish to state emphatically that I have not issued any such statement to the press and do not subscribe to it. The said statement is a malicious and desperate creature emanating from the stables of my detractors and must be treated with the contempt it deserves”, the statement emphasized.

“I don’t intend to dignify the said statement with any elaborate thought or response, but for the sake of the many NDC supporters who are concerned and disturbed by this mischief, I would like to set the records straight.

“I was privileged to have been given the opportunity to work with Hon. Kojo Bonsu as his spokesperson when he was Mayor of Kumasi from 2013 to 2016. During that period, I discharged my duties to him, the KMA, the great NDC and my beloved Country to the best of my abilities. I remain grateful to him for that opportunity.

“My stance on who is the best person to lead the NDC into the 2020 Election is a matter of public knowledge. I have constantly maintained that H.E John Dramani Mahama (JDM) remains the NDC’s surest bet for victory in the 2020 upcoming Election, and I have not deviated from this position in the remotest of forms. I still believe that he is the best person who can lead the NDC to restore hope to our grassroots and to recapture power come 2020. This position of mine remains unchanged and therefore, I cannot and will not be party to any agenda other than that of H.E. JDM” the statement read.

Read: I will never call John Mahama corrupt Sammy Gyamfi to saboteurs

Gyamfi urged Bonsu to rescind his decision to contest in the upcoming presidential primaries.

Bonsu together with Joshua Akamba were the brains behind the party’s “Unity Walks” which were organised to restore hope for the disgruntled members of the party after the party’s humiliating defeat in 2016 by the NPP.

The “Unity Walk’ which was aimed at restoring hope to members of the NDC across the country was hijacked by Mr. Mahama to keep his name and face alive.

After the declaration, Joshua Akamba who is a closest to Bonsu has distanced himself from his declaration and described Mr. Bonsu as a traitor.

  • Cambridge University completes restoration of gatehouse

One of Cambridge University’s imposing college gates has been restored by a paint job that has taken four years to complete.

The heraldic detail, which dates from the early 1500s, had not been painted for “many years” and had started to look faded.

The four-year project included research into the original colours and methods used, repairs, and the painting itself.

College bursar David Ball said he was “really pleased” with the result.

The Gatehouse on St Andrew’s Street is the main entrance to Christ’s College and is highly visible to tourists and shoppers in the city.

Read: Brett Kavanaugh: FBI contacts second woman

It was built by Lady Margaret Beaufort, the grandmother of Henry VIII, who founded the college in the early years of the 16th Century.

Much of the facade, including the late 16th Century oak doors, remained largely unchanged until the masonry was refaced with harder stone in 1714. A statue of Lady Margaret was added in the 19th Century.

Mr Ball said: “It’s many years since we last repainted the gatehouse, and in total it’s taken about four years to research the right colours to be used, to restore wear and tear to the stonework and then to complete the repainting itself, which was undertaken by some very skilled craftsmen and women.

“We’re really pleased with the results.”

The restoration was carried out by Longstanton-based Brown and Ralph, which said the conservation of the stonework would “not only increase its natural life but also brighten the Cambridge streetscape”.

Poet John Milton and naturalist Charles Darwin are among Christ College’s notable alumni.

  • Klopp: Liverpool must strike back

Jurgen Klopp has his sights set on immediate revenge over Chelsea after they ended Liverpool’s perfect start to the season.

Eden Hazard’s superb late solo effort after coming off the bench clinched a 2-1 Carabao Cup victory for Chelsea at Anfield on Wednesday night.

Read: Liverpool refers Mo Salah to police

Both teams fielded largely second-string teams and will be back to full strength for Saturday’s Premier League encounter at Stamford Bridge.

But Klopp admitted there is added motivation for the Reds, having tasted defeat for the first time in this campaign following seven consecutive victories in all competitions.

The Liverpool manager said: “We want to strike back, of course, but you lose once, it can happen.

“Striking back is a duty in sport, a big part of what I love. In a season you always play twice.

Read: Liverpool manager Klopp aware of trophies pressure

“It’s not easy to play a team in August and then say in May ‘let’s strike back’ but in three days, it’s possible. Let’s try.

“It will not be an easy game, both teams know that. But the best preparation for the Saturday game is the Wednesday game, because you can never know more about an opponent than in a match against them.

“Of course there will be a few different players on the pitch, but we try to use our information from Wednesday to do it better.”

The league leaders can open up a five-point gap between themselves and Chelsea if they maintain their 100 per cent top-flight record this term.

Read: Salah on target as Liverpool start with easy win

“It’s difficult enough to try to win the game or get a point at Chelsea, I don’t think about the five-point gap, and the five-point gap with 31 games to go is nothing,” said Klopp.

“It’s only about gaining points on our account.”

Klopp expects Trent Alexander-Arnold and Georginio Wijnaldum to feature against Chelsea after illness and a knock respectively, but Virgil van Dijk is a major injury doubt.

  • Trade Ministry orders reopening of foreign retailers shops

The Ministry of Trade and Industry has directed that retail shops closed by the task-force on retail trade be opened “with immediate effect.”

This comes after consultations with the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA), the Nigerian High Commission and other relevant stakeholders.

Read: GUTA denies harassing Nigerian business owners, urges Ecowas to probe claims

According to a statement from the Ministry, the directive is to “permit the various State Institutions and Agencies to carry out their lawful mandate of enforcing local laws and regulations, including those related to the operations of businesses in Ghana.”

The statement assured that the government will continue to ensure that “all businesses operating in the retail sector of Ghana are given the opportunity and support to regularize their operations and comply with laws and regulations in the country.”

Read: GUTA lifts foreigner traders ban, calls for cooperation

The Ministry further urged the affected businesses “to contact the relevant state institutions to regularize their operations.”

The directive comes after some Nigerians staged a demonstration in Abuja to protest the perceived intimidation of Nigerian businesses in Ghana.

The protesters claimed that Ghanaian authorities have so far closed some 400 shops belonging to Nigerians. They went ahead to present their petition to the ECOWAS office in Nigeria, asking for their intervention.

But the Ghana Union of Traders, has denied the allegations from their Nigerian counterparts.

The Trade Ministry insisted that “there is no orchestrated action by government or any state institution targeted at Nigerian nationals or any particular foreign nationals.”

The Ministry also said it will “implement a comprehensive sensitization programme” to ensure collaboration among all stakeholders.

Read: GUTA lifts foreigner traders ban, calls for cooperation

Per the GIPC law Section 27 (1) of the GIPC Act, a person who is not a citizen or an enterprise which is not wholly owned by a citizen shall not invest or participate in the sale of goods or provision of services in a market, petty trading or hawking or selling of goods in a stall at any place.

The government had made moves to enforce this law in recent times, but stressed that it needed to ensure some diplomacy in the matter.

There was a July 27 deadline for foreign retailers to leave, but it was suspended to ensure further sensitization.

The suspension was met with some criticism from the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA), but the Ministry assured that the government is not reneging on its promise to sanitize the retail sector.

  • Beyoncé is music’s most powerful woman

She says she’s a “black Bill Gates in the making” who “ain’t never seen a ceiling in my whole damn life”.

So it’s hardly surprising that Beyoncé has been named music’s most powerful woman by BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour.

The superstar came first in a list of the industry’s 40 most influential women, thanks to her feminism, activism and empowering musical messages.

Taylor Swift, Adele and Dua Lipa were also included on the power list, which was unveiled as part of BBC Music Day.

The top 40 didn’t just recognise big-sellers and global stars, making room for the unsung heroes who work behind the scenes to champion women.

Third place went to Vanessa Reed who, as head of PRS for Music, has persuaded dozens of festivals to sign up to a 50:50 gender balance on their line-ups by 2022.

The top 10 also includes Marin Alsop, who became the first female conductor to lead the Last Night of the Proms in 2013, and Chi-chi Nwanoku, who founded Europe’s first professional majority black and minority ethnic orchestra, Chineke!

Gender diversity in the music industry is notoriously poor, especially in technical jobs like engineering and production. And even with artists like Cardi B, Adele and Dua Lipa devouring the charts, recent research shows that men account for 78% of hit singles.

Woman’s Hour said it hoped publishing the power list would lead to better representation.

“It’s a celebration of 40 incredible women but hopefully it doesn’t stop there,” said broadcaster Tina Daheley, who led the panel of judges.

“A lot of the people on the list are coming on to the programme, and I think that’s where the conversation will start.”

    Woman’s Hour Power List 2018 – The Top 10

    Beyoncé

    Taylor Swift

    Vanessa Reed (PRS for Music)

    Adele

Stacey Tang (MD of RCA Records)

Gillian Moore (Director of music at Southbank Centre)

Rebecca Allen (President of Decca Records)

    Marin Alsop

    Chi-chi Nwanoku

Maggie Crowe (Director of events at BPI)

Daheley said the top 40 was whittled down from a longlist of 100 names, with judges looking for women “who’ve had an impact over the last 12 months”.

Beyoncé “absolutely deserves to be number one”, she added.

“She’s one of those people who’s absolutely in charge of her own destiny and she’s using that platform in a way that makes a difference: empowering black people in America, addressing injustice head-on and championing women.

“It’s not just the lyrics and activism in her music which, you could cynically say, sells music,” she continues. “She puts her money where her mouth is and she’s contributed to Black Lives Matter and the people affected by Hurricane Katrina.”

Taylor Swift was praised by the panel for standing up to streaming companies like Apple and Spotify over royalties, and for successfully suing a US radio DJ who groped her at a backstage “meet and greet” event in 2013.

“When I see young girls and how she empowers them to be strong women, I see how much she’s influenced them and her impact on these girls who will be the activists of the future,” said judge Jasmine Dotiwala, a music TV producer and columnist.

Daheley was also keen to highlight figures like Fiona Stewart who, at the age of 18, was a single mum living in homeless shelters – but now runs the Green Man Festival.

“Her story’s incredible – but it’s also her attitude to music festivals. She refuses corporate sponsorship and she won’t have a VIP area. She’s very impressive. She’s lower down the list, but still being celebrated.”

The list also includes Sarah Stennett, who manages acts like Rita Ora, Ray BLK and Bebe Rexha.

“I never thought consciously of my gender as something that limited me in any way until this year,” Stennett told BBC News.

“I was just too busy trying to push forward and survive in the cut-throat environment of the male-dominated entertainment business.

“It took an essay my daughter wrote on the effects women face from subconscious patriarchal oppression for me to finally stop and realise that it was that oppression itself which was part of my relentless drive not to fail and which has, in fact, helped me achieve a level of success that has enabled me to be part of this list.

“I hope that any success achieved will help other women close the gap on the gender imbalance of executive roles in business.”

Woman’s Hour publishes its Power List annually, focusing on a different theme each time.

As well as Daheley and Dotiwala, this year’s panel included novelist Jessica Duchen, record producer Catherine Marks and musician Kate Nash.

The mayor and his team spotted several traders who had thrown caution to the wind, as they sold their wares ranging from clothes, shoes and food in the road.

  • Coach Zito wants Starlets players to be promoted to Satellites

Black Starlets coach, Karim Zito, is disappointed by the complete absence of a succession plan that allows for players of the national Under-17 side to be promoted to the next level of our national team.

According to him, the current Black Starlets team had been disbanded due to their unsuccessful attempt to pick up the sole slot for the next Africa Cup of Nation in Tanzania next year.

Coach Zito who poured out his disappointment to the Graphic Sports Online on Thursday complained about how his current team had been sent home without any plan to promote them for the Under-20 side.

Read: Deputy Black Starlets coach blasts CAF over new U-17 qualification format

“This is bad because ideally they should have been promoted to form the Black Satellite squad but all of them have been asked to go home immediately we returned from the competition”, the coach stated.

In his view, the senior national team can be formidable only if the young ones who constitute the base, are properly groomed and promoted from one level to the next. He was also unhappy about the idea of forming new juvenile teams anytime the need arose.

Currently, the team has deserted camp at Prampram and no one knows their fate while Coach Jimmy Cobblah prepares the current Under-20 side. Unfortunately, most of the current Under-20 players were drafted outside the Under-17 side that played in the World Cup in India last year under Coach Paa Kwesi Fabin.

Read: Black Satellites Coach Jimmy Cobblah happy to qualify for AYC in Niger next year

Coach Zito said the haphazard way of doing things was causing serious problems for Coach Kwesi Appiah who finds it difficult to assemble players for the national team because he had to scout wider to search for quality players for the senior national team.

He argued that even most of the players who are often invited are without any proper data for them to be adequately monitored by the coach. He, however, advocated for managers of the national teams to institute a plan that would allow good players in the junior teams to automatically climb to the next level the national teams.

  • Thomas Partey a real canyon at Atlético Madrid

Thomas Partey returned to the starting line up of Atlético de Madrid and as always he delivered with a goal against SD Huesca. The Ghanaian was one of the most prominent players of the match. Not only did he play an active part of the team’s creation of the game, but he also scored a great goal that is already becoming the brand of his.

Thomas Partey has specialized in scoring goals from outside the area. On Tuesday he scored from 30 meters. In the memory of the fans, the goal is reminiscent of the cannon shots of the last goal against Deportivo in Riazor , which gave the three points to Atlético ; and the one at Qarabag , which salvaged a point in the group stage of the Champions , this one from almost 40 meters.

The player recognized after the match feeling very satisfied with how things had gone. “I am a player who likes to play anywhere, reach the area and try to score,” explained the Ghanaian.

Read:Thomas Partey is a real canyon at Atlético Madrid

It is evident that he showed off with the goal that he scored, but beyond that, the player played a luxurious game. He was the player who recovered the most balls, eight. No single entry failed to retrieve the ball. He made 85 good passes with 91% success in the pass, created an occasion, finished three times and scored the aforementioned goal.

It is not been a start that Partey expected. The arrival of new colleagues has brought about competition. Now, Rodrigo , Lemar and the fact that Koke or Saúl have to pull towards the pivot, has displaced him.

And Simeone knows that deep down he is unfair, as he has recognized several times, because he is the player who works the most and the best in training. What’s more, it’s what the voice does not usually raise. Talk about the field. “As a player I want to play everything but with the competition that there is, the coach decides. I try to do my job and do the best I can, “explained the footballer.

Last season was the one of his consecration. He is the player who has grown the most compared to the previous year. More than 2,443 minutes more than in the 16-17, plus 26 more total games and 31 more as a starter. He has been one of Cholo’s trusted players . As a pivot, right side … for a broken and unstitched.

Paradoxically he was not a starter in the final of Lyon and is weighed in his mind. He had important offers this summer and an affordable clause to the tune -50 million euros-, but Simeone closed the exit door once again. The player smelled what was coming as far as his participation. And that has happened. At the moment, 273 minutes in six games, but only two of them as a starter. And still, a goal and an assist.

  • Thomas Partey is a real canyon at Atlético Madrid

  • Trump says China is interfering in midterm elections

President Donald Trump claimed on Wednesday that China is working to interfere in November’s midterm elections with the aim of damaging him politically.

“Regrettably, we found that China has been attempting to interfere in our upcoming 2018 election coming up in November against my administration,” Trump said during remarks at the UN Security Council.

The President offered scant details or evidence, which came during a session meant to focus on issues of nonproliferation. He suggested the meddling attempts came as retribution for the budding trade war he has waged with Beijing.

“They do not want me or us to win because I am the first president ever to challenge China on trade,” Trump said.

“We are winning on trade. We are winning at every level. We don’t want them to meddle or interfere in our upcoming election.”

Speaking after Trump, China’s representative on the Security Council denied attempts to interfere in US elections.

“China has all along followed the principle of non-interference in other countries’ domestic affairs. This is a tradition of Chinese foreign policy,” said Wang Yi, China’s State Councilor and Minister for Foreign Affairs.

“We do not and will not interfere in any countries’ domestic affairs. We refuse to accept any unwarranted accusations against China, and we call upon other countries to also observe the purposes of the UN charter and not to interfere in other countries’ internal affairs.”

Later Wednesday, Trump tweeted an image of a recent China Daily sponsored insert in the Iowa-based Des Moines Register newspaper, containing articles supporting Beijing’s stance on the trade war.

“China is actually placing propaganda ads in the Des Moines Register and other papers, made to look like news. That’s because we are beating them on Trade, opening markets, and the farmers will make a fortune when this is over!” the US President said on his official Twitter.

China Daily is a state-media publication which has regularly paid Western news organizations to publish pro-China supplements and advertisements.

The US distributor of China Daily is registered as a foreign agent in the United States under the US Foreign Registration Act.

A senior administration official on Wednesday sought to further flesh out Trump’s allegation that China “has been attempting to interfere” in the 2018 midterm elections, but offered no concrete evidence to back up the President’s claim.

None of the activities the official described rose to the level of Russia’s coordinated campaign to influence voters in 2016 in support of Trump’s candidacy.

Instead, the official lumped in longstanding practices of the Chinese government and reiterated the administration’s belief that Chinese tariffs targeting regions in the US that supported the President in 2016 amount to election interference.

The official described a “whole of government approach using political, economic, commercial and informational tools to benefit the interests of the Chinese Communist Party” and insisted that these activities “go way beyond how normal countries interact with one another.”

“The activities have reached an unacceptable level,” the official said on an official White House briefing call set up on condition of anonymity.

A new round of tariffs on $200 billion worth of Chinese goods went into effect this week at Trump’s order. The move escalated a standoff between the US and China, and Trump has held out the possibility of slapping additional tariffs should Beijing retaliate.

US intelligence officials have stated previously that nations like China or Iran may work to interfere in the midterm elections using a playbook established by Russia during the 2016 presidential contest.

Throughout his time in office, Trump has repeatedly downplayed Russia’s attempts to interfere in the 2016 election, which US intelligence assessments say was meant to benefit him.

He did not mention Russian interference attempts during his remarks on Wednesday and the activities described by the senior administration official several hours later did not rise to the level of Russia’s actions in 2016.

The official listed other longstanding Chinese government activities without making specific connections to the midterm elections or explaining how such actions amount to election interference: “China punishes or rewards businessmen, think tanks, movie studios, journalists, religious leaders and even political candidates depending on whether they criticize or support china’s policies.”

The official said the administration is “in the process of declassifying more information” and said Vice President Mike Pence will outline the Chinese effort in a speech next week at the Hudson Institute.

The official insisted that the actions amount to election interference because “some of these activities are actually covert.”

Later, departing UN headquarters, Trump insisted there is ample evidence of China’s enmity toward him.

“Plenty of evidence they would like to see me not win,” Trump said when questioned about his earlier claim Beijing is working to interfere in November midterm contests.

“First time ever they’ve been confronted on trade,” Trump said. “They can’t get involved.”

Earlier this month, US Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats said that election meddling attempts haven’t yet reached the scale of the 2016 interference efforts. But he said US agencies were actively monitoring the situation ahead of the vote.

Republicans are working to retain control of the House and Senate, through face daunting prospects with an unpopular president.

Trump has suggested previously that China would work to damage Republicans in November.

“China has openly stated that they are actively trying to impact and change our election by attacking our farmers, ranchers and industrial workers because of their loyalty to me,” he tweeted last week.

What China does not understand is that these people are great patriots and fully understand that China has been taking advantage of the United States on Trade for many years.”

Trump has vowed to add tariffs on an additional $267 billion in Chinese goods if Beijing takes steps that negatively impact agricultural or industrial workers.
