  • Noah Cyrus selling tears after Lil Xan breakup for $12,000

Of course it’s a publicity stunt, but you have to admit it’s unique.

Ahead of her new EP titled “Good Cry,” singer Noah Cyrus is selling some of her tears.

But there’s a limited time to grab that bottle of tears for a mere $12,000.

Cyrus, 18, put the supposed results of her emotions up for sale for 48 hours on the site for Pizzaslime, a clothing line with which is she is collaborating.

“This is approximately 12 tears made by Noah Cyrus as a result of sadness,” says the description of the bottle that comes with a dropper. “Human digestion of these tears is not suggested cause tears are generally pretty salty and that would just be super f***ing weird if you drank someone else’s tears.”

There’s also an assortment of other Cyrus-related merchandise including hoodies that say “Noah Cyrus sucks” and a “Noah Cyrus tears” mug that can be obtained for much cheaper than her tears ($10).

The assumption is that said tears are connected to the singer’s recent public split with rapper Lil Xan.

The pair reportedly had only started dating in August when their breakup played out on social media this month with accusations of cheating and — naturally — some tearful video.

Cyrus recently posted a clip on Instagram to promote her new EP — which she said was aptly named.

  • Gunmen attack military parade in Iran

Several people have been killed after unknown gunmen opened fire during a military parade in the southwestern Iranian city of Ahvaz, state television reported.

“Several gunmen began shooting from behind the stand during the parade. There are several killed and injured,” a correspondent told state television.

The semi-official Fars news agency, which is close to the elite Revolutionary Guard, said two gunmen on a motorcycle wearing khaki uniforms carried out the attack.

The parade was marking the start of the Iran-Iraq War, which lasted between 1980 and 1988.

The report Saturday described the assailants as “Takifiri gunmen,” a term previously used to describe the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) group.

State television showed images of the immediate aftermath. In it, paramedics could be seen helping someone in military fatigues laying on the ground. Other armed security personnel shouted at each other in front of what appeared to be a viewing stand for the parade.

Ahvaz is the capital of Iran’s oil-rich Khuzestan province. The province in the past has seen Arab separatists attack oil pipelines.

  • Beware of lucrative online investments — Police warns

The Director of Cybercrime Unit of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service, Dr Herbert Gustav Yankson, has cautioned the general public against seeming lucrative online investments as most of them are Ponzi schemes used in defrauding investors.

He said currently, his unit was investigating a number of such schemes (names withheld for security reasons) that had succeeded in defrauding several unsuspecting people of monies running into millions of Ghana cedis.

    Ponzi schemes

A Ponzi scheme is a form of fraud in which a purported business lures investors and pays profits to earlier investors using funds obtained from newer investors.

Investors are made to believe that those profits are coming from product sales or other means and are unaware that other investors are the source of apparent profits.

Read: Keep calm; your investments are safe Menzgold to customers

Dr Yankson explained that these online fraudsters, some of whom claim to be trading in bitcoin for example, pay huge returns which could be as much as 100 per cent interest within a period of three months, luring a lot of people to invest.

He said most investors did not even understand how the purported online trading was done but paid huge monies to those fraudsters because of the high interests promised.

Also, most investors have no idea of the location of the purported businesses but are only attracted by the benefits enjoyed by earlier investors.

He said initially, they paid these unrealistic interests and when they realised the numbers had increased, they gave excuses such as website upgrades or migrating unto a higher version.

Read: Your investments are safe in Ghana Akufo-Addo assures Chinese businesses

“When people request for their investments, they pay with all interests accrued just to attract a higher number of people as they know people will market their platform and even increase their initial investment,” he explained.

    Foreign-based websites

Dr Yankson said with the cases they were currently handling, the websites used for those schemes were out of Ghana and so the police had to liaise with foreign counterparts, which could take time to trace the culprits.

He added that in some instances, the websites were taken down before the victims realised they had been scammed.

“It is very difficult to trace such activities as we cannot tell who runs the business or the location.

So far, the few people we have arrested claim they are either associates or marketers who only registered with them online and cannot tell their physical locations,” he said.

He said the so-called marketers and associates arrested by the police would be arraigned before court for prosecution as they represented these Ponzi schemes.

Dr Yankson, therefore, advised investors to ensure that the businesses they invested in had been registered and licensed to operate in Ghana with a physical office.

Bitcoin is a cryptocurrency, a form of electronic cash.

It is a decentralised digital currency without a central bank or single administrator that can be sent from user to user on the peer-to-peer bitcoin network without the need for intermediaries.

Earlier this year, the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Ernest Addison, at a media briefing to conclude the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) annual meetings, said the necessary regulations to support the use of bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies currently did not exist in the country.

He said trading and using the popular cryptocurrency known as bitcoin in the country was not yet legal because it was not recognised as a legitimate form of currency in the country.

Dr Addison said a Settlements and Payments Bill was before Parliament, which would cater for the use of cryptocurrencies in the future.

    Victim

A victim of a recent online scam who spoke to The Mirror on condition of anonymity, said he was introduced to the platform by a friend who had his investment doubled within two months.

He then sent his investment to a middle man who facilitated the purchase of the bitcoins worth GH¢25,000.

“I was then registered and saw my investment increase daily till last month when the website started messing up.

Later, I realised I had been scammed as the many emails and WhatsApp messages sent to the office of the investment firm were not replied,” he said.

He said together with some investors who had also lost huge sums of monies, he had lodged a complaint at the CID Unit of the police headquarters.

  • Kenya lesbian film ban temporarily lifted

A Kenyan judge has temporarily suspended the ban on Rafiki, a locally produced film about a lesbian romance, following a court challenge by the film’s director.

The boss of Kenya’s film regulator, the KFCB, had banned it in April last year because of its same-sex theme.

Ezekiel Mutua said it promoted lesbianism, which he said was against Kenya’s culture.

The film’s director Wanuri Kahiu Kahiu went to court to argue that the ban by KFCB made it impossible for her to submit the film for review for the 2019 Oscars Awards.

A journalist – who was at the High Court in the capital, Nairobi – tweeted that the film is allowed to be screened for seven days.

In another tweet she quoted presiding judge Wilfrida Okwany as saying that the film would not compromise Kenyans morality.

Set in Nairobi, Rafiki tells the coming-of-age story of two young women, Kena and Ziki, who meet and fall in love.

Their romance unfolds against a backdrop of homophobia and intolerance in a country where gay sex is outlawed.

It was screened at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.

  • NDC accused of bussing Juaboso minors for voters registration exercise

The governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has accused the opposition National Democratic Congress in Juaboso in the Western region of bussing minors to register for a referendum.

Director of Elections Evans Nimako posted pictures of a pick-up with registration number GX 696-16 with a number of young people on board, one of them in school uniform.

“They are just bussing them in turns and I feel that it is not right”, he complained on Joy News’ Newsnight programme Thursday.

The Electoral Commission has begun a limited voters registration exercise ahead of a referendum for the creation of six new regions including the western north region, where Juaboso is located.

The exercise is expected to last 10 days. The NPP Director of Elections said NPP agents at the EC office are challenging their eligibility and would ask for a review of the process with the view of removing suspected minors.

NDC MP for Juaboso, Kwabena Mintah Akandor has dismissed the claims and accused the Director of “creating tension”.

He said he contributed vehicles to bus those interested in registering to vote because chiefs, opinion leaders and MPs across the divide have all pledged to “do anything and everything to support the creation of the new region”.

He said some prospective voters living as far as 10 miles away from the EC District office where the limited registration exercise is being organised.

He was, therefore, playing his part by providing transportation to the registration centre.

“It is simple”, he said and explained it is the responsibility of agents at the EC office to check the eligibility of those bussed to the centre, not him.

A referendum is expected in December 2018 which could lead to the creation of six new regions in addition to the existing 10 regions.

In the Western region, some chiefs have pushed for the creation of the Western North region to be carved out using nine districts.

The referendum is a recommendation of the Justice Alan Brobbey Commission of Enquiry set up in November to hear petitions in areas demanding a re-demarcation of the regions.

Advocates for the creation of new regions believe it will accelerate development.

Spokesperson for the Western North region, Rtd. Lt. Col. Anthony Aduhene said during the commission’s hearing in April 2018, the “creation of the region will trigger, at least, a construction of a regional hospital where good healthcare delivery will be easily accessible”.

He argued that “the only general hospital (in the region) is in Sekondi but it serves only the people in Western South”.

  • Technical university teachers continue strike

The Technical University Teachers Association of Ghana (TUTAG), is continuing with its sit-down strike since September 12, 2018.

The association says it is awaiting commitment by the government in writing to resolve its grievances about conditions of service.

Read: Ho Technical University appeals for completion of abandoned projects

The union is also at odds with the National Labour Commission (NLC) because it claims that as an impartial arbiter, the NLC was unable to compel the Minister of Education, Mr Opoku Prempeh, to attend an arbitration sitting of all parties which was called by the commission on August 30, 2018.

    Sit-down

The Chairman of the Accra Technical University (ATU) Chapter of TUTAG, Dr Ibrahim Zubairu, explained this in an interview with the Daily Graphic in Accra last Tuesday.

He said while the Minister of State in charge of Tertiary Education, Prof. Kwesi Yankah, had appealed to them to resume work, they could not because it was merely an appeal, with no promise of the resolution of their grievances.

Dr Zubairu said it was also disappointed in the NLC for declaring the strike illegal.

Read: Prof Adei urges government to stop allowances to trainee teachers, nurses

He said the union had notified the commission about their intended strike on August 29, 2018 and the NLC had invited them for arbitration on September 12, 2018.

“We decided to hold on until the meeting with the NLC that Wednesday. However, we were more than distraught when we arrived at its offices and were told by a messenger that the meeting had been cancelled,” Dr Zubairu said.

He said their investigations revealed that the ministers did not make it to the meeting and that it was a smack in the face of TUTAG that a messenger of the commission was the person sent with the message that the meeting had been cancelled.

“The NLC, by that action, did not act in good faith with us,” he stated.

    Genesis

Dr Zubairu explained that the grievance of TUTAG boiled down to a lack of a scheme of service, in conformity with the status of some technical institutions which were changed to universities in 2016.

Previously, lecturers were on conditions of service linked to the Technical Colleges Act, but the change brought about a new statute that also had to bring about new schemes of service.

Read: Government to consolidate NAPTEX, COTVET, new council coming Napo

Dr Zubairu said a post-conversion staff audit and schemes of services were some of the changes that had to be initiated by the government, agreed to by the governing boards of the technical universities and passed for lecturers to be clear about their work and benefits.

However, since 2006, even before the conversion of the colleges into universities, the government had not been straightforward with technical college lecturers in ensuring that the right things were done.

    Strike

A statement by the National Executive Committee of the TUTAG declaring the strike, which was signed by its General Secretary, Mr Joseph Danso, said the Ministry of Education and the NLC had shown “gross disrespect” to their request for the resolution of grievances.

Vietnam’s President Tran Dai Quang has died aged 61 after prolonged serious illness, according to state media.

Quang died in a military hospital in Hanoi on Friday from a “serious illness despite efforts by domestic and international doctors and professors”, Vietnam Television reported.

Quang, one of the country’s top three leaders but with mostly ceremonial duties, hosted President Donald Trump during his first state visit to the communist country last year.

Originally from a small farming community 115 km south of Hanoi, Quang rose through party ranks to become a police general and member of Vietnam’s powerful decision-making Politburo.

Quang was elected president in April 2016 with a reputation of being a tough leader with little tolerance for dissent.

He often appeared uncomfortable in the public eye and lacked the charisma of some of his peers in the upper echelons of the party.

  • Nigeria suspends relaunch of national airline

The relaunch has been suspended for strategic reasons and had nothing to do with politics, aviation minister said.

Nigeria is suspending the relaunch of its national airline just over two months after it announced the new venture, the country’s aviation minister has said.

The government had planned to launch the prestige project in December to make good on a promise by Muhammadu Buhari when he ran for president in 2015. He will seek re-election in February.

“I regret to announce that the Federal Executive Council has taken the tough decision to suspend the national carrier project in the interim,” Hadi Sirika, junior aviation minister, said on Wednesday on Twitter after the weekly cabinet meeting.

“All commitments due will be honoured,” he said. No reason was given for the decision.

In a separate statement, Sirika said: “The suspension was strategic and had nothing to do with politics.”

The airline relaunch was announced in July as part of a plan to improve the country’s infrastructure, which has suffered due to decades of neglect and under investment. The government maintains that improvement will require private investment.

A private operator was sought to manage the airline, according to a document seen by Reuters news agency.

The operator would enter a public-private partnership with the government, which would own no more than five percent.

The chief executive of Ethiopian Airlines said in August the airline was a front runner to set up and manage the carrier.

Nigeria Airways, the original national airline, operated for 45 years until 2003. Air Nigeria, its successor, ran from 2005 to 2012.
