  • GRA warns against importation of rice through inland borders

Mr Frank Lawson, an Officer of Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), has warned importers to stop importing rice from neighbouring countries through inland borders, particularly in the northern parts of the country.

He said the GRA would move to enforce a directive banning rice importation through inland borders in the north because many dealers evade tax.

Mr Lawson said this during the 3rd quarter of 2018 tax education seminar organized by GRA in the Upper West Regional capital, Wa.

Read: Producer Price Inflation drops to 7 percent

It was held to enlighten Ghanaians on the need to pay tax in order to facilitate development.

Mr Lawson said 50 per cent taxes were being applied on commodities such as alcoholic beverages and cigarettes in order to discourage their importation due to the health hazards associated with such commodities.

However, he said, in the case of rice, “it is prohibited and when you try, your product would be seized totally from you”.

He said GRA was only enforcing a directive by policymakers and advised those who have concerns over the matter to table it before their representatives in Parliament.

Read: Government extends date for calculating cost of imports due to cedi depreciation

Participants at the event backed the statement saying it is a move in the right direction and appropriate.

Mr Imoro Alhassan Anas, a participant, said: “Our farmers are equally good and are even doing better than farmers in other countries and so the ban on importation of rice would empower and motivate the local farmers to expand their production and employ other people”.

He urged custom officials to monitor the borders critically in order to ensure that no individual or groups importing rice from the inland borders got away with it.

Read: Importers mistrust paperless port GRA

Mr Anas said: “How can Ghana import rice from Burkina Faso when we are singing the song of Ghana Beyond Aid”.

“Our farmers deserve better and should not be discouraged since imported rice creates an impression that our local products are inferior,” he said.

  • We have not apologized to Mahama Spare parts dealers

The Public Relations Officer for Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) and also Chairman of Abbosey Okai Spare Parts Dealers Association Mr Joseph Paddy, has called on the public to disregard a story suggesting that spare parts dealers have apologized to former president John Mahama.

Speaking to the media over the issue, he said, those flying stories were just propagandist with evil intent and will, therefore, like to categorically state that, they (spare parts dealers) have never apologized to the former president and see no reason why they owe him an apology.

Read: Spare parts dealers postpone demonstration

Mr Paddy further indicated that the group calling itself as Concerned Spare Parts Dealers Association does not exist and must therefore not be taken seriously. He believes the group is a politically motivated society seeking to do the bidding of the opposition NDC Party.

News in circulation suggests that Spare parts dealers have expressed disappointment in President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and have apologised to former President John Mahama for calling him incompetent.

According to the publication, members of the association said they will go on their knees and apologise to Mahama for the insults hurled at him and the NDC government.

Read: We are sorry Spare Parts dealers beg Mahama

“As a personal apology, wherever Mahama is, he should forgive us. I want him to also forgive me personally. We insulted him… we embarrassed him. We called him a thief, incompetent and all sort of names. We thought this one (Nana Addo) was coming to help us, but he is rather finishing us!” Takyi Addo said in an interview on Kumasi base radio station.

However, Mr Joseph Paddy the PRO for GUTA reacting to the publication has charged Ghanaians to disregard this publication and treat it with the contempt it deserves, since the association has no knowledge of this malicious intent and call on the media to be circumspect in its reportage.

Mr Paddy, in contrast, praised the government of President Akufo-Addo for the many tax reliefs he has granted the business community, as well as, the several business-friendly policies he has brought.

Read: Our Friday demo due to hardship, deceit Spare parts dealers

“For us as traders and importers we know government has not increased import duties, at least, since last year. There are obviously issues at the ports but it goes beyond government policy. There are individuals at the ports and customs officials who must be dealt with so that the good policies by government can yield the right results”. he indicated.

He further gave assurances of his groups commitment to work hand in hand with government to iron out any challenges confronting their industry.

  • You’d have paid 10% more under Mahama – Amewu defends fuel prices

As the Minority in Parliament laces its boots to begin a nationwide tour to push for a reduction in fuel prices, Energy Minister, John Peter Amewu maintains that the government has managed the situation better than the John Mahama-led administration would have done.

Mr Amewu told journalists Thursday, that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) since assuming the reins of power 21 months ago, has reduced the Special Petroleum Tax (SPT) twice.

Read: Scrap special petroleum tax to bring fuel prices down Minority

In March 2017, the 17.5% tax was slashed to 15% and in February 2018, it was reduced further to 13%.

The minister said if John Mahama was still president, “Ghanaians would be paying close to between 9% to 10% higher than the current prices”.

“Prices today would have been GHS5.54 for petrol and GHS5.55 for diesel,” he added. The prices for both products are currently GHS5.12, Mr Amewu said.

But the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) who introduced the SPT in 2014 says the tax has outlived its purpose and should be scrapped totally.

In 2014, the NDC government planned the year’s budget on a projected price for the country’s oil exports but toward the end of that year, the price of crude had plummeted drastically on the international market causing the Seth Tekpeh-led Finance Ministry to introduce the tax to plug the hole created.

Read: Fuel prices to hit 5 cedis per litre

The then NDC Member of Parliament for Madina, Alhaji Amadu Sorogho said the imposition was “rational”, arguing it was necessary for the government to look for revenues that could easily be collected.

Minority spokesperson on energy Adam Mutawakilu told Joy News in February 2018 that the prices of crude have gone up on the international market and demanded that the SPT be scrapped.

Mr Amewu however, says the decision to totally scrap the tax would be arrived at after review talks with the Finance Minister are finalised.

    Reckless deals

Mr Amewu also noted that some 11 agreements signed under President Mahama are being considered for cancellation.

He said the government is forced to pay an amount in excess of 50 million dollars for power projects that are not needed because of excess installed capacity.

Describing these agreements as “reckless”, Mr Amewu said the taxpayer is paying for what is not needed.

Read: Fuel prices have exposed the incompetence of the NPP A Plus

It will cost 402 million dollars to terminate the 11 agreements but it will cost government 586 million dollars yearly to stick to these deals.

Former Deputy Power Minister under John Mahama has, however, hit back at Mr Amewu on his claims that the excess power is not needed.

“If it is not needed why do they seek to extend the AMERI deal,” John Jinapor told the Mid-day news on Joy FM.

He noted that the NDC will respond to all the claims made by the Minister later.

  • Ronaldo’s sister: ‘They want to destroy him’

Cristiano Ronaldo’s sister, Katia Aveiro, has come out in defence of the Juventus forward after his red card in the 2-0 win against Valencia on Wednesday.

Ronaldo was dismissed on his Champions League debut for Juve after a clash with Jeison Murillo was spotted by the assistant referee and communicated to German referee Felix Brych, who drew a red card from his top pocket.

The Portuguese forward was reluctant to leave the field at the Mestalla and appeared to be on the verge of tears as he finally walked to the tunnel in disbelief.

She wrote on Instagram: “A football disgrace…justice will be done…they want to destroy my brother, but God never sleeps…disgraceful.”

Aveiro posted further images of the incident on her Instagram story with similar captions.

It was Ronaldo’s first red card in 154 Champions League games, and the decision means he could miss a return to Old Trafford when Juventus play Manchester United next month if he gets at least a two-match ban.

UEFA rules state that a player who is sent off is suspended for the next match in the competition but if the episode is deemed a “serious offence,” he could miss more games.

Blaise Matuidi defended Juve teammate Ronaldo and demanded the red card be rescinded.

“It’s very harsh. I think if you have seen the pictures, you’ll have seen that it’s incomprehensible,” Matuidi said. “I hope that they [UEFA’s disciplinary commission] will look at it and that they will have something positive for him, because he doesn’t deserve that.”

Ronaldo, who was predictably given a hostile reception by the home crowd, could be seen mouthing the words, “I didn’t do anything,” as he trudged back to the dressing room following the incident.

“He was sad after the match, very sad,” Matuidi added. “And we are all sad for him.”

Meanwhile, Valencia coach Marcelino said Ronaldo was “very affected” by his red card and even cried on his Champions League debut with Juventus.

“Cristiano was very affected for his sending off, I saw him crying,” Marcelino, who spoke to Ronaldo after the episode, told Cope. “He said he had done nothing wrong. The truth is that I was not able to see anything.”

  • China strikes back by going after America’s energy companies

The United States has an abundance of natural gas that pollution-riddled China badly needs to wean itself off coal.

Eying China’s voracious demand, Cheniere Energy, ExxonMobil (XOM) and other American energy companies are racing to build more than two dozen expensive facilities to export liquefied natural gas, which is super-cooled natural gas that can be transported by ship

China even marked President Donald Trump’s visit to Beijing last fall by agreeing to invest as much as $43 billion into an LNG project in Alaska.

But this pairing of an able buyer and well-supplied seller no longer looks like a slam dunk. As part of the escalating trade war, China on Tuesday said it will impose a 10% tariff on $60 billion of US products — including LNG.

Read: China hits back at latest US tariffs with measures on $60bn

The trade tensions could make it more difficult for the next wave of LNG export facilities to get the financing needed to get off the ground.

“It’s obviously very concerning. The potential for some projects to get delayed is very real,” said Charlie Riedl, executive director of the Center for Liquefied Natural Gas, a trade group that represents Exxon, Chevron (CVX) and other energy companies.

The shale boom created an excess of natural gas in the United States. In a bid to get rid of the glut, the United States began exporting LNG in 2016 when Houston-based Cheniere (LNG) opened the Sabine Pass terminal in Louisiana. Earlier this year, Dominion Energy (D) opened Cove Point in Maryland, the nation’s second export facility .

China is the big elephant in the room. China’s appetite for LNG is growing rapidly. And it’s on the verge of overtaking Japan as the biggest buyer of LNG in the world.

That’s one major reason why the United States is planning to quadruple its export capacity by building at least 25 new facilities. LNG is a centerpiece of Trump’s energy dominance agenda.

In the 12 months leading up until June 2018, China was the second-largest buyer of US LNG, according to energy consulting firm Wood Mackenzie. Shell, the US subsidiary of Royal Dutch Shell (RDSA), was the largest seller.

However, China has dialed back its US LNG purchases in recent months as trade tensions have ratcheted up, according to ClipperData. Beijing is instead turning more to LNG powerhouses Qatar, Australia and Russia.

“China has been able to find willing sellers closer to its own backyard,” said Matt Smith, ClipperData’s director of commodity research.

    Tariffs less than feared

Now, the tariffs will likely price US LNG out of the Chinese market, according to S&P Global Platts.

“There are other suppliers around the world that would gladly supply China — and they don’t have a 10% tariff,” said Riedl.

Kyle Isakower, vice president for economic policy at the American Petroleum Institute, said in a statement that the trade situation “works against US energy sector growth and counter to the administration’s stated goal of ‘energy dominance.’”

The good news is that China had threatened an even bigger tariff — 25% — on US LNG. Cheniere’s share price rallied 2% on Tuesday in response to the lower-than-feared rate.

In any case, analysts don’t believe that overall US LNG exports will be dramatically hurt in the short run. There are plenty of other buyers, including Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and Latin America. And Washington has been pushing Europe to break its addiction to natural gas from Russia.

Read: Trump to impose tariffs on $200B in Chinese goods

“If China buys less, someone else will buy more,” said Pavel Molchanov, an energy analyst at Raymond James. “It doesn’t matter if it’s a Chinese buyer, a European buyer or a Latin American buyer. Revenue is revenue.”

    Will projects get shelved?

The real fallout of the US-China trade war could be felt in that next wave of LNG projects that’s in the works.

Due to the enormous cost to build each facility, financing hinges on the ability to sign a long-term buyer to a contract. And the obvious buyer had been China. Until now, that is.

For instance, Cheniere announced plans in May to expand its Corpus Christi export terminal in Texas. The expansion was backstopped in part by a contract with PetroChina (PTR).

Cheniere did not respond to a request for comment on the impact of the tariffs from China.

In August, Cheniere CEO Jack Fusco told analysts that threatened tariffs from China may slow down talks with counterparts in China about future growth.

However, Fusco said that the tariffs won’t impact existing contracts. And he emphasized that the US-China energy relationship has been beneficial to both sides, including by creating thousands of direct and indirect American jobs.

“China is an important growth market for Cheniere,” Fusco said. “We expect to sell meaningful amounts of LNG into China over the long term.”

  • Kanye teases new album with tweet

Yeezy has posted a picture of a minidisc with the words ‘Yandhi 9 29 18’ (that’s 29 September or a week on Saturday).

The artwork (below) is very similar to his Yeezus album, which was released in 2013.

We can’t find any translation of the word ‘Yandhi’ but it looks like it is pronounced similarly to the Hindi word for ‘storm’ – which would seen appropriate given his recent dealings with the press and social media.

Either that or it could be a play on the name Gandhi with Kanye perhaps comparing himself to the Indian human rights leader, in much the same way that Yeezus was a play on the name Jesus.

Kanye released Ye earlier this summer – the first of seven albums which he produced for the likes of Pusha T, Nas and Teyana Taylor.

He’s also been working on a new record with another famous Chicagoan rapper Chance, who tweeted this below, suggesting their album will be called “good ass job” Are they talking about the same album or can we expect two albums in the pipeline?

Looks like we’ll find out by the end of the month.

  • Asankragwa: Three Amenfi Districts vow not to join Western South Region

Disgruntled opinion Leaders, Chiefs and the people of the Amenfi East, Amenfi West and Amenfi Central have petitioned the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo-Addo of their unwillingness to be part of the Western South Region when the entire western region is finally divided into two separate regions.

Read: Two Chinese illegal miners arrested in Amenfi West

According to them, their paramount chief; Tetrete Okuamoah Sekyim II signed the joint petition sent to the office of the president some few months ago because they believe the Amenfis should be part of the Western North Region and not the Western South Region as sighted documents read.

Registering their displeasure on Tuesday morning on the streets of Asankragwa in a peaceful demonstration, the youth argued that “traditionally, socially, politically, economically, historically, and culturally the Sefwis, Aowins and the Amenfis have a lot in common through inter-marriages, schooling and good neighborliness”, therefore the Amenfi Districts must be part of the Western North Region.

However, proximity to the new regional capital wherever it would be cited would be less than half the travelling time from any part of Amenfi as compared to journeying to the current regional capital, Sekondi-Takoradi.

The people maintain that the new region obviously comes with opportunities for development which the Amenfi Districts would be in a better position to benefit immensely.

Copies of their petition were sent to the office of the Minister for Regional Integration, the Western Regional Minister and the Omanhene of the Wassa Amenfi Traditional Council Wassa Akropon.
