Employees of Zoomlion Ghana Limited within Accra, have withdrawn their services without any official notice, the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has said.

This has resulted in uncollected rubbish in parts of the capital city.

He told Citi News ” [Zoomlion] their truck drivers and the janitors have gone on a sit-down strike claiming that they have issues with their management, but that is also affecting their waste collection within the city centres.”

An earlier AMA statement noted that the Assembly had deployed tipper trucks to collect all rubbish lying around as an interim measure to deal with the situation.

“The Assembly wishes to assure the public that it is working around the clock to bring the situation under control,” the statement said.

  • No more IPPs without competitive bidding Nana Addo

President Nana Akufo-Addo has directed the Energy Ministry and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) not to sign any Independent Power Producer (IPP) agreements without a competitive bidding process.

Speaking at the commissioning of a 20-megawatt solar plant at Gomoa Onyaadze in the Central Region, President Akufo-Addo said the era where IPPs short-changed Ghanaians have ended.

Read: ACEP wants local firms in ECG Concession probed

He says the government has begun rationalising the contributions of IPPs in the country.

“When we came into office, we inherited a plethora of IPP agreements, all of whom were contracted at the time of our crisis, and therefore, left us in a weak position, and got us accepting tariff rates of 18 cents per kilowatt hour and over. In an Era in the world where 10 cents per kilowatt hour is the maximum, we are producing IPP agreements at 18 cents per kilowatt hour,” he said.

The President stressed that those were “not acceptable arrangements.”

“So, in future, we are going to insist that IPP arrangements are created out of competitive bidding, because it is only by that process that we will be able to get the competitive rates that both our domestic consumers as well as our industrial users need and can work with.

President Akufo-Addo also hopes Ghana starts producing its own solar panels.

“And then, we are in an age where renewable energy facilities are being produced domestically. So, we want to get to a situation here in Ghana whereby these solar panels are produced domestically. And it can be done within the confines of the one district one factory initiative,” he added.

With the Government having committed itself to having 10 percent of its energy generation mix coming from renewable energy by 2020, the President indicated that his administration has put in place measures “that will help us, within a decade, to have renewable energy as the majority of the generation mix of our country.”

  • No-deal Brexit would hit UK economy, says IMF

The International Monetary Fund has warned that a “no-deal” Brexit on World Trade Organization terms would entail “substantial costs” for the UK economy.

The IMF said that all likely Brexit scenarios would “entail costs”, but a disorderly departure could lead to “a significantly worse outcome”.

The challenges in getting a deal done were “daunting”, it said.

Read: Brexit: May vows no compromise with EU on Brexit plan

The IMF expects Britain’s economy to grow by 1.5% in both 2018 and 2019 if a broad Brexit agreement is struck.

The predictions came in the IMF’s latest annual assessment of the UK economy.

Speaking at a news conference at the Treasury in London, Christine Lagarde, the IMF’s managing director, added: “Those projections assume a timely deal with the EU on a broad free trade agreement and a relatively orderly Brexit process after that.

“Any deal will not be as good as the smooth process under which goods, services, people and capital move around between the EU and the UK without impediments and obstacles.”

A no-deal outcome would affect other EU economies “to a lesser extent”, the IMF said.

Ms Lagarde said a “disorderly” or “crash” exit from the EU would have a series of consequences, including reduced growth, an increased deficit and depreciation of sterling, leading to a reduction in the size of the UK economy.

“The larger the impediments to trade in the new relationship, the costlier it will be,” she said.

“This should be fairly obvious, but it seems that sometimes it is not.”

She pointed out that countries tended to trade mostly with their neighbours, adding: “I think geography talks very loudly.”

    ‘Clear warnings’

Ms Lagarde said she “very much” hoped that the UK and the EU would strike a deal, describing herself as “a desperate optimist”.

UK Chancellor Philip Hammond said the government had to listen to the IMF’s “clear warnings”.

Read: Theresa May visits Nigeria as Brexit trade mission continues

He added: “The IMF are clear today that no deal would be extremely costly for the UK as it would also for the EU, and that despite the contingency actions we’re taking, leaving without a deal would put at risk the substantial progress the British people have made over the past 10 years in repairing our economy.”

Recent UK economic data has shown a pick-up in growth. Earlier this month, the Office for National Statistics said the economy had grown by 0.6% over the three months to July – the fastest pace in almost a year.

The latest IMF prediction represents a slight upgrade for 2018. In July, the IMF said the UK economy would grow by 1.4% this year and 1.5% in 2019.

Head coach of the Golden Eaglets of Nigeria, Manu Garba says it’s disappointing Ghana will not be making it to the Africa U-17 championship in Tanzania.

According to the Nigerian coach, the format for the qualifiers this year will affect next year’s competition especially with West Africa having the best in terms of youth football.

Nigeria defeated Ghana on penalties to win the WAFU U17 tournament in Niger and qualify for the African Championship to be held in Tanzania later this year.

The match ended 1-1 at full time and the Golden Eaglets were masterful in penalties to dispatch the Black Starlets 3-1 on penalties.

Manu Garba is worried about the quality that will eventually represent Africa at the FIFA World U-17 Cup next year.

“Either side deserved to win but unfortunately it is only one ticket,’ he said after the game. “In the qualification way, I think this is not the best for CAF because West Africa is the strength of African football at youth level,” he added.

“Nigeria have won the world cup the most, five times, Ghana has won it on three occasions. And it is just unfortunate a team like Ghana is missing out. Niger itself and Cote D’ Ivoire are not going to this tournament,”

“I think this zone must head to CAF to change this format because it is not good for West Africa. Honestly,I think Ghana must be there but I will say congratulations to Ghana even in defeat. It was a befitting final.”

  • Storm Florence: Heavy flooding cuts off Wilmington

The coastal city of Wilmington, North Carolina has been completely cut off from the rest of the state because of deepening flood waters.

Officials say all roads in and out are now impassable and have warned evacuated residents to stay away.

Reports describe the city, which has a population of about 120,000, as an island within the state.

About 400 people there have been rescued from flood waters, and most of the city remains without power.

Read: South China battered by deadly storm

The National Weather Service has warned of at least two further days of possible flash flooding in the area before conditions are forecast to improve.

“Do not come here,” New Hanover County Commission Chairman Woody White said.

“Our roads are flooded, there is no access into Wilmington…We want you home, but you can’t come yet.”

Two of the first known fatalities – that of a mother and her seven-month son – were reported in the city on Friday morning.

The area is usually best known as a filming location for US dramas One Tree Hill and Dawson’s Creek.

US basketball legend Michael Jordan – who is fundraising to help residents affected by the storm – also grew up in the city.

Many roads inside Wilmington are still passable for residents who defied evacuation orders to ride the storm out.

But a city-wide curfew has been extended after five people were arrested on suspicion of looting from a store in the city on Saturday.

What is the latest on the storm?

At least 17 people are now reported to have died in storm-related incidents in North and South Carolina since Florence made landfall as a category one hurricane on Thursday.

It has now weakened into a tropical depression with winds of 35mph (55km/h), according to the National Hurricane Centre.

Some parts of the Carolinas have seen up to 40in (100cm) of rain since Thursday – and officials have warned river levels are yet to peak in places.

“The storm has never been more dangerous than it is right now,” North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper said on Sunday.

“Wherever you live in North Carolina, be alert for sudden flooding.”

The governor also warned of the potential danger of landslides once the weather system reached more mountainous areas.

The US coast guard and volunteer boats have been helping people left stricken by rising flood waters across the states.

Officials in North Carolina have said about 900 people have been rescued from floodwaters there, and about 15,000 people still in emergency shelters.

US President Donald Trump has declared a disaster in several North Carolina counties – a move that frees up federal funding for recovery efforts.

  • South China battered by deadly storm

A powerful storm which killed dozens of people in the Philippines is now making its way across southern China.

Typhoon Mangkhut is one of the most powerful storms to hit the region in decades.

Two people have been killed in the Chinese province of Guangdong, according to state media – more than 2.5 million people have been evacuated in Guangdong and on Hainan island.

In Hong Kong, the storm wrecked buildings and shut down the city.

Read: Philippines hit by strongest storm

The typhoon is now moving inland, and is expected to hit the Chinese regions of Guizhou, Chongqing and Yunnan later in the day.

In the Philippines, 33 miners have been confirmed dead and at least 29 are missing after a landslide hit a mining site in Itogon in Benguet province, according to local reports.

Search and rescue missions are continuing, and there are fears the death toll could rise above 100, said Itogon’s mayor, Victorio Palangdan.

In Hong Kong, which was hit hard over the weekend, videos on social media showed apartments swaying in the wind, scaffolding crashing to the ground and commercial buildings with windows shattered.

Transport services have also been suspended, with flights cancelled, trains stopped and major roads closed.

Mangkhut is expected to gradually weaken into a tropical depression by Tuesday as it continues to move inland.

    How has China been affected?

Typhoon Mangkhut made landfall on the Chinese coast near Jiangmen city on Sunday afternoon.

Officials put the number of injured in Hong Kong at more than 200.

Despite avoiding a direct hit, winds there reached more than 110mph and as water levels surged by almost 3.5m (12ft) in places.

Authorities had issued their maximum alert, warning residents to stay indoors and away from windows to avoid flying debris.

Most shops and public services were shut, and about 900 flights were cancelled at Hong Kong International Airport.

A resident living in a high-rise in the city told Reuters news agency she could feel her building swaying in the storm.

“It swayed for quite a long time, at least two hours,” Elaine Wong said. “It made me feel so dizzy.”

In neighbouring Macau, for the first time in its history, the territory’s famous casinos were ordered to close.

    How about the Philippines?

The storm ploughed across the main Philippine island of Luzon over the weekend.

Most of the deaths there were caused by landslides, government officials say. Dozens of people are still missing after the storm, which is being called Ompong locally.

In the mining town of Itogon, at least 33 miners died after being buried under a landslide.

Read: Hurricane Florence: At least four dead as storm downgraded

Itogon Mayor Victorio Palangdan told news wire AP that dozens of miners and their families had rushed into an old bunkhouse – that had been turned into a chapel – for refuge when the typhoon hit.

The building was later wiped out by landslides.

“They thought they were really safe there,” said Mr Palangdan.

The BBC’s Howard Johnson in the Philippines described a trail of destruction along the northern coast of Luzon with forests ripped to shreds and electricity poles felled.

There is also concern over the economic cost of the typhoon, which has caused extensive damage to farmland in Cagayan, a key agricultural province.

Francis Tolentino, a political adviser to President Rodrigo Duterte, told the BBC that he estimated only a fifth of produce there had been harvested in advance – threatening staples like rice and corn.

Preparation and evacuation procedures have improved since Super Typhoon Haiyan in 2013 which killed more than 7,000 people.

Warnings were issued, travel was restricted, schools shut and the army was put on standby in advance.

  • 4 illegal miners caged 15 months each in Bekwai

Authorities at the Forestry Commission are excited over a 15-month jail term slapped on four illegal miners who invaded the Jeni Forest Reserve in the Amansie West District of the Ashanti Region.

Bekwai Circuit Court presided by His Lordship Justice A.W.K. Nawurah sentenced each of the four galamsey operators who encroached on the Manso Essumenja section of the reserve to 15-months imprisonment with hard labour.

The convicts are Simon Nsoh, 40; Yaw Aning, 28; Yaw Appiah and Hamidu Sulemana, 22 and 19 years respectively.

They were arrested by the Rapid Response Team of the Forestry Commission on September 10, 2018.

The team ceased pumping machine, shovels, a gold washing machine, among other artisanal mining equipment.

The four illegal miners pleaded guilty when they first appeared before the court on Friday, forcing the judge to give the ruling.

The Prosecutor, Detective Inspector Stephen Ofori, told the court the action of the convicts who until their arrest were mining gold illegally have caused damage to the forest reserve which is under the Bekwai District Forestry.

Officials are happy at the sentence, saying it will deter many others from engaging in the illegal mining especially in forest reserves.

“It gives warning to the general public that we need to refrain from forest offences so this will serve as a deterrent to others so that people may not indulge in forest offences such as illegal mining, illegal farming and lumbering,” said Mr Agbewoshie.

According to him, some court judgments have not been punitive enough to deter encroachers.

“Sometimes feeble fines are given to the people and they are able to pay and go back to the field to indulge in illegal mining. Sometimes the cases are not much deterrent in terms of fines that are imposed on them.

“I want to use this opportunity to commend the court, commend the prosecution and all those who helped in ensuring we successfully prosecute these people who engaged in illegality,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mr Agbenowoshie says the commission will continue to sensitise the public on the need to protect forest reserves in the country.

  • GN, Premium and Heritage in merger talks

GN Bank is currently in talks to merge with Premium and Heritage Bank, Joy Business sources reveal.

The sources say a formal communication about the proposed merger was sent to the Bank of Ghana last Friday for their consideration.

A favourable response by the Bank of Ghana would pave the way for the three banks to kick-start the process to merge their operations.

    Background

GN bank had initially planned to merge with Premium and Sahel, however, Sahel later got out of the planned marriage and instead joined forces with Omni Bank.

Joy Business understands the mergers are aimed at helping these banks meet the new capital requirement of 400 million Ghana cedis.

GN Bank told Joy Business a while ago that it was looking at raising the funds on its own to recapitalise.

However, it is not clear what the proposal to merge with the two other banks would mean for the bank in terms of meeting the new capital requirement.

When would this merger be completed?

A letter cited by Joy Business shows that if the central bank does not object to the merger, it could be completed by next month. It is, however, not clear what name these three banks would adopt for the merged entity.

  • Deadly ‘shark attack’ at Massachusetts beach

A man in his 20s has died after being injured in a suspected shark attack in the US state of Massachusetts.

The incident happened at Newcomb Hollow Beach around lunchtime on Saturday.

The man was pulled from the water and given CPR but later died in hospital from his injuries, police in the town of Wellfleet said.

Read: Hurricane Florence: At least four dead as storm downgraded

The attack is thought to be the state’s first fatal incident involving a shark since 1936.

The man was reportedly boogie-boarding, a type of body-board surfing, at the time of the attack, AP news agency reports.

His name has not yet been released to the public but the man’s family are said to have been informed.

Officials say the town’s beaches will remain closed to swimmers for at least 24 hours.

A witness described the scene on the beach as a “nightmare” to the Cape Cod Times newspaper.

“Just a giant eruption of water. 15ft wide. I saw a tail and a lot of thrashing,” Joe Booth said.

“You could tell by the body language of the guys in the water something wasn’t right.”

Great white shark sightings in Cape Cod have soared this year, with experts blaming increased seal levels close to the region’s beaches.

In August another man, 61-year-old neurologist William Lyton, was attacked by a shark just six miles away from Saturday’s incident.

He sustained severe injuries to his legs and is still recovering in hospital.

  • Trump to impose tariffs on $200B in Chinese goods

President Donald Trump is planning to impose a fresh round of tariffs targeting about $200 billion in Chinese goods, The Wall Street Journal reported Saturday, citing individuals familiar with the matter.

The timing of the announcement is fluid, two people familiar with the plans told CNN on Saturday.

According to the Journal, the tariffs are expected to be set at around 10%, according to people familiar with the matter, a lower level than the possibility of 25% tariffs previously floated by the administration.

Read: US brings in second batch of tariffs against China

The move aims to increase pressure on Beijing ahead of planned high-level discussions and is intended to provide the US leverage in talks over China’s alleged practice of demanding American companies turn over technology in order to do business in the country, the Journal reported. But any imposition of new tariffs has the potential to further escalate trade tensions between the US and China.

CNN has previously reported that the President had been pressing his administration to move ahead with the tariffs; Trump met with top aides earlier in the week and instructed them to proceed with the plan.
The Journal reported that individuals briefed on the plan said the specifics are still being worked out, but they anticipate an official announcement of the new tariffs on either Monday or Tuesday.

White House spokeswoman Lindsay Walters did not comment on specifics to the newspaper. She pointed the Journal to a statement released Friday. CNN has reached out to the White House for comment.

“The president has been clear that he and his administration will continue to take action to address China’s unfair trade practices,” she said in that statement. “We encourage China to address the long standing concerns raised by the Unites States.”

The next round of US tariffs on Chinese goods is likely to make thousands of products, including dishwashers, Fitbit fitness trackers and food seasonings, more expensive for American consumers.

The Trump administration has already imposed 25% tariffs on $50 billion worth of Chinese goods. Trump has said the tariffs are necessary to punish Beijing for what he says are its unfair trade practices and intellectual property theft.

China, which has accused the United States of trade bullying, has matched the tariffs dollar for dollar. Beijing has pledged to hit back again with tariffs on another $60 billion of US exports, including meat, coffee, furniture and auto parts.

  • Why people take longer to say ‘I love you’ in relationships

    • According to a survey by eHarmony, people are taking longer to say “I love you” than they did in 2014.
    • They’re now waiting four and a half months to express their feelings.
    • It could be because modern dating is tough, and it’s scary to be honest with someone new about how you feel.
    • There’s every chance they might be dating other people, or looking around for someone better.
    • The only way to combat the fear is to be bold – if you love someone, tell them.
    • If they’re right for you, they won’t run away.

I can’t remember the last time I told a romantic partner I loved them. That might be because I’m perpetually single, but it could also be because the moment of telling someone how you feel has been hijacked and blown out of proportion by fiction.

Saying “I love you” feels monumental in romantic comedy films and television shows, but in reality, it probably doesn’t have to be such a big deal.

Being upfront and honest about everything – including your emotions – should be a bare minimum in a relationship. But modern dating culture escalates our emotional hangups, with all the mind games and rules to stick to.

Read: How having similar texting styles can affect romantic relationships

This is just one of the many reasons saying those three little words can seem so scary right now.

According to a new study from eHarmony, people are taking longer to say “I love you.” In fact, they’re taking nearly a month longer than they did four years ago.

Having been on the dating scene for over two years, I can understand why. When you meet someone new, you don’t immediately know if you’re one of three other people they’re dating, or whether they’re going to sack you off as soon as someone more interesting comes along.

You don’t know until it’s too late whether someone is going to ghost you, or string you along for months simply out of boredom. It’s really rough out there, and it’s pushing us apart.

By surveying over 2,000 adults, eHarmony found Brits wait 137 days into a relationship (four and a half months) to say “I love you” for the first time. In 2014, it was 112 days, or just under four months, which is still a fairly long time. So what are we so scared of?

Psychologist Emma Kenny said although dating apps have given us a greater range of options, it also means the scene is infinitely more competitive.

“Singles are faced with a ‘paradox of choice,’ expanded by online and app dating,” she said. “This can mean people are afraid to take the risk and say ‘I love you’ for fear that doing so too early and coming on too strong may backfire and push a partner away, rather than cementing the relationship.”

Read: How to make your relationship last

The paradox of choice essentially means always thinking the grass is greener on the other side. But if you’re always holding out for something better, chances are you could end up with nothing.

Perhaps that’s why people are more wary of saying “I love you” than they used to be – they’re holding off because they might meet someone better looking, funnier, or more successful. Or maybe they’re scared they’re the one who is a placeholder for their current partner, who is scouring their dating apps for a better option.

By living in fear, people are putting up barriers for really getting to know each other. The only way to combat the fact dating apps are destroying our chances for happiness is to be brave and to tell someone the moment you think you’re falling hard.

“It’s vital to have courage in your convictions when telling someone you love them,” said Kenny.

“If you feel that now is the right time and suspect the sentiment is mutual, then be bold – telling somebody you love them is a necessary stage in building a close, long-term connection.”

Even if it does turn out to be too soon, at least you took the risk. And when you’re ultimately with the right person, you won’t be timid about your feelings, and you’ll be glad you didn’t wait around.
