  • Alvarez beats Golovkin on points to take WBC and WBA middleweight titles

Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez claimed the WBC and WBA world middleweight titles by inflicting a first career defeat on Gennady Golovkin with a gripping points win in their Las Vegas rematch.

The Mexican claimed a frenetic final round on two of the three scorecards which was critical in preventing a repeat of the draw both men shared 364 days earlier at the same T-Mobile Arena venue.

Read: Isaac Dogboe returns to the ring in December

It gave him a narrow a 114-114 115-113 115-113 majority decision to edge a contest in which both men were cut and where each showed why they are among the finest practitioners in the sport.

Golovkin, whose first defeat comes in his 40th bout, left the ring immediately without conducting an interview as his rival – fighting for the first time since serving a six-month drugs ban – celebrated.

Read: Isaac Dogboe can be greater than Azumah Kwadwo Baah Agyemang

“My corner told me I needed to win the final round and that’s what I did. I’m very emotional,” said Alvarez, who has previously held world titles at middleweight and light-middleweight.

Golovkin told reporters afterwards: “I’m not going to say who won tonight, because the victory belongs to Canelo according to the judges. I thought I fought better than he did. We would like to have a third fight, we will negotiate that, that’s what we want.”

  • Big Brother, Celebrity Big Brother are officially ending

Makers of Big Brother have announced that the show is being axed at the end of the current series.

Big Brother’s Twitter account shared the news that the 19th series, launching on Friday night, would be the last.

Channel 5 confirmed Celebrity Big Brother was also ending.

The show first appeared on screens in 2000 and was extremely popular, but viewing figures have dwindled in recent years.

Read: The Big Bang Theory final season to end in 2019

A spokesperson told the BBC: “The forthcoming series of Big Brother will be the last – of either celebrity or civilian versions – on Channel 5.

“We’d like to thank Endemol and all of the production team who have worked tirelessly to make the show a success.”

Endemol released a statement shortly after Channel 5’s announcement to say they were “disappointed not to reach an agreement with Channel 5” over the future of the show.

The production company did hint that it might not be the end of the show entirely as they added “the decision opens up a new chapter and we are excited about future possibilities for Big Brother in the UK”.

During the launch of Celebrity Big Brother, Channel 5 controller Ben Frow hinted the franchise would be ending as “the contract runs out at Christmas”.

Big Brother made Alison Hammond, Jade Goody and Kate Lawler household names back in 2002

It was revealed recently by Deadline that Channel 5 was set to bring popular US TV show The Bachelor to a British audience, as a rival to ITV2’s Love Island.

The dating show failed to captivate viewers when the channel brought it over in 2012, but the current appetite for dating shows could help revive its popularity.

Big Brother was billed as a social experiment on Channel 4 18 years ago, and involved putting ordinary people in a house over a series of weeks with no contact to the outside world.

Davina McCall presented the first incarnation of the show, stepping down in 2010 when it moved to Channel 5.

It was then hosted by former winner Brian Dowling before Emma Willis took over in 2013 and been narrated by Marcus Bentley for the whole 18 years the show has been on air.

Rylan Clark-Neal has hosted the spin-off show Bit on the Side for six years and tweeted to thank show makers and viewers for the “amazing journey”.

The final CBB series was won by Ryan Thomas, but was overshadowed by the actions of Roxanne Pallett, who accused Thomas of punching her.

The incident attracted more than 11,000 complaints to Ofcom and overshadowed the show’s other storylines for the rest of the series.

Pallett later apologised to Ryan Thomas, saying she “overreacted”.

In July, Endemol Shine UK applied to Hertsmere Borough Council to keep the Big Brother house at Elstree Studios in Borehamwood, Hertfordshire, for the next three years.

The house’s current permission was due to expire on 30 September, just 16 days after the new series begins.

The council’s planning committee approved the application at a meeting on Thursday, after discussing conditions to restrict noise.

  • US wants to toughen UN response to peacekeeper misconduct

The United States has presented a draft Security Council resolution aimed at toughening the UN response to failures by peacekeepers in their mission to protect civilians, US Ambassador Nikki Haley said Wednesday.

UN peacekeeping missions are facing a damaging wave of allegations of sex abuse and of failing to come to the aid of civilians caught up in violence, notably in the Central African Republic and South Sudan.

The draft text, seen by AFP, would reinforce measures such as repatriating peacekeepers, replacing units and withholding UN payments for soldiers involved in misconduct — penalties that have irked troop-contributing countries.

Read: 14 peacekeeping policemen interdicted for sexual misconduct

“We hear far too many stories of civilians who are vulnerable, who put their trust in peacekeepers, and our peacekeepers fail to protect them,” Haley told a council debate on peacekeeping.

The draft resolution will “accelerate progress on improving peacekeeping performance,” she said.

The United States, which is the number one financial contributor to the UN’s peacekeeping budget of $6.9 billion, has moved to cut funding amid concerns over misconduct and poor performance of some missions.

But Russia and China cautioned that the views of troop-contributing countries must be taken into account and called for improved training of peacekeepers, instead of penalties.

Russian Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia said the council should not become involved in “micro-management” of missions and suggested that the council could show support for improved performance through a statement instead of a binding resolution.

Pakistan, one of the top three troop contributors to peacekeeping, spoke out against a public “name-and-shame” approach and pointed that a lack of resources was undermining peacekeepers in their missions.

Negotiations on the draft were continuing and a vote has not been scheduled.

The United Nations has 96,000 peacekeepers serving in 14 missions worldwide.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has vowed to toughen the UN response to allegations of misconduct against the blue helmets and has appointed a victims’ advocate to oversee the handling of cases of sexual abuse.

His predecessor Ban Ki-moon took the unprecedented step of firing the commander of the mission in the Central African Republic over his handling of dozens of cases of sex abuse and misconduct by the peacekeepers.

Ban also sacked the head of the mission in South Sudan following a report that showed peacekeepers did not respond to appeals for help from aid workers who came under attack at a nearby hotel compound.

The President has not proven to us that, he has the capacity to fight corruption, he added. According to him, the corruption under Nana Addo has gone through the roofs and due to that, his ministers are resigning from their jobs. He stressed that the president doesn’t have the capacity to fight corruption and he has failed the country.

“And I hope that Ghanaians cannot wait to vote him out in 2020,” he said. He was optimistic the NPP would be voted out in 2020 because the corruption is unprecedented. He was emphatic corruption is at the seat of government hence the inability of Nana Addo to fight it.

When asked what he was expecting to see to convince him of the zeal of the president to fight corruption, he said, the over bloated appointees under him is a mark of corruption and so, looking at Nana Addo’s number of appointees, I will say I am convinced he is not ready to fight corruption and in 2020, Ghanaians will vote him out.

  • Trump says US under ‘no pressure’ for China trade deal

The US President Donald Trump said Washington is under “no pressure” to achieve a trade deal with China as the prospect of new tariffs loom.

The comments come amid reports the two sides could resume talks to stave off a third round of US tariffs.

China welcomed the offer of talks and said the two countries were discussing the details, according to reports.

Read: Russia and China to reduce use of US dollar in trade

The US has launched a trade war against China which could see all of its exports to the US subject to duties.

“We are under no pressure to make a deal with China, they are under pressure to make a deal with us,” Mr Trump said in a tweet on Thursday.

“Our markets are surging, theirs are collapsing.”

The US and China have slapped tariffs on $50bn of one another’s goods this year in an escalating trade war between the world’s two largest economies.

The tariffs are the latest Trump policy to challenge the free trade system which has prevailed for decades.

They are already affecting companies, particularly the automobile industry, and hurting economies.

Mr Trump said last week he could move “very soon” to impose tariffs on an additional $200bn (£153bn) worth of products with taxes on another $267bn “ready to go on short notice”.

If both sets of tariffs go ahead it would mean virtually all of China’s US exports would be subject to new tariffs.

“The [US] administration views tariffs as a way of getting the attention of the Chinese leadership and increasing their leverage at the negotiating table,” Michael Froman, former US trade representative told the BBC.

“I don’t think the imposition of tariffs are a wise move because it’s a tax, it’s a tax on the consumer ultimately. It’s also very disruptive to companies who are trying to manage global supply chains.”

    Potential talks

Details on the potential trade talks were thin, but Larry Kudlow, White House economic advisor, said the prospect of talks was a positive development.

Read: US pushes back on foreign takeover deals

Mr Kudlow told Fox Business News on Wednesday that US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin “has apparently issued an invitation”.

“I can’t give you many details because there aren’t many details. But I always believe in most cases talking is better than not talking, so I regard this as a plus.”

Later on Thursday, China’s foreign ministry welcomed the offer of talks and said the two countries were discussing details.

The White House says tariffs are a response to China’s unfair trade policies, which Mr Trump blames for helping to create a huge trade deficit.

China accuses the US of launching “the largest trade war in economic history” and has retaliated in kind.

Deputy Information Minister Eugene Fahngon spent his first night in cells on Wednesday and is expected to be released on Friday.

  • Boxer Emmanuel Tagoe’s 14-year-old son not his child, DNA test reveals

Former IBO Lightweight Champion, Emmanuel Tagoe aka Gameboy says he is scandalized after DNA results proved that a son he had been fathering for 14 years is NOT his.

The Ghanaian boxer was dragged to an Accra Circuit Court by one Ms Diana Otoo, mother of the child, citing neglect of paternal duties.

The 29-year-old claims he had always felt suspicious a conspiracy by the family of the woman who, he says plotted to siphon monies from him.

Tagoe insisted he had always paid GH¢500 as a monthly stipend for the upkeep of his supposed son but the family insisted he pays more.

Speaking to Saddick Adams Obama on Atinka TV’s Sports Court show, Tagoe said the lady’s family had taken him through hell, and only wanted to damage his reputation through blackmail.

“These people have really made me suffer. If not for my mum, I would have done this DNA test long ago but anytime I mentioned, she insisted I accept the child”.

“I was paying GH¢500 a month but they could come out anytime and take money that the child was sick. Already, I was taking care of the child but I was shocked when they started demanding more money”.

“They even demanded that I send the child to the same school where Asamoah Gyan’s children were schooling but I didn’t have that kind of money”.

In July 2018, the family of Ms Otoo contacted Atinka FM’s Sports Court show with documents from DOVVSU and an Accra Court indicating that Tagoe was supposed to pay them an amount of money but has refused.

Tagoe, however, decided on a DNA test, the result of which proved he was not the father.

The court asked me if I wanted to sue them for damages but I have left everything to God. Everything I gave to the child, I won’t take it back. He deserves it, not the mother”.

“The most important thing is that now I am free”.

“I was very sure that this boy was not mine but my mum had gagged me. We were young when I was playing ‘Pilolo’ with the girl. We were just standing and I had sex with her. I didn’t even ejaculate but her family came home later to say the girl is pregnant for me”.

The court asked me if I wanted to sue them for damages but I have left everything to God. Everything I gave to the child, I won’t take it back. He deserves it, not the mother”.

  • France admits torture during Algeria’s war of independence

More than 1.5 million Algerians died during the 1954-62 war of independence against colonial-ruler France.

France acknowledged for the first time it was responsible for systematic torture during the Algerian war of independence in the mid-1950s.

President Emmanuel Macron said on Thursday that Maurice Audin, a communist pro-independence activist who disappeared in 1957, “died under torture stemming from the system instigated while Algeria was part of France”.

Macron, who paid a visit to Audin’s widow on Thursday, was also set to announce “the opening of archives on the subject of disappeared civilians and soldiers, both French and Algerian”.\

During the 1954-62 war, which claimed some 1.5 million Algerian lives, French forces cracked down on independence fighters in the colony ruled by Paris for 130 years.

During the 1954-62 war, which claimed some 1.5 million Algerian lives, French forces cracked down on independence fighters in the colony ruled by Paris for 130 years.

Macron told Audin’s widow: “The only thing I am doing is to acknowledge the truth.”

Josette Audin told reporters at her apartment in the east Paris suburb of Bagnolet: “I never thought this day would come.”

    Disappearances

Starting with former President Jacques Chirac in 2003, French leaders have at various points denounced the suffering that the occupation of Algeria caused the indigenous population, before walking back or tempering their statements.

But none until Macron, however, acknowledged France’s responsibility in the torture of Algerian detainees.

During the war, the French government censored newspapers, books, and films that claimed it had used torture. After the war, atrocities committed by its troops remained a taboo subject in French society.

Rim-Sarah Alouane, an international human rights jurist and a PhD candidate in public law at Toulouse University, told Al Jazeera that justice was finally being served.

“I think this very welcoming decision by President Macron was the natural next step to take in this very heavy history. It had to be done for the sake of both countries,” Alouane said.

“A lot of mysteries around the disappearances of people who fought during the Algerian war of independence remain, mysteries that have affected thousands and thousands of families.”

Alouane said while the declaration does not amount to an apology, it’s an important step given that colonisation is still a taboo subject in France.

Historian Sylvie Thenault said the French state’s acknowledgement that Audin’s death resulted from a “system” pointed to a broader recognition of wrongdoing.

“Through recognition of the state’s responsibilities in the disappearance of Maurice Audin, have the state’s responsibilities in all disappearances in Algiers in 1957 not been recognised?” she wrote in The Conversation, a news website.

    Facing the past

Macron, the first president born after the conflict, sparked controversy on the campaign trail last year by declaring that France’s colonisation of Algeria was a “crime against humanity”.

He later walked back the comments calling for “neither denial nor repentance” over France’s colonial history.

Reporting from Paris, Al Jazeera’s Natacha Butler said Thursday’s announcement had deep symbolic meaning and would bring closure for Audin’s widow 60 years later – and may help others with the opening of the archives.

“It’s a very significant statement indeed. It closes a chapter for her, and it perhaps opens one for others because relatives of people who died at the time will be able to find out what happened to their loved ones,” she said.

An assistant professor at the University of Algiers, Audin was 25 when he was arrested at his home – likely by French soldiers – accused of harbouring communist independence fighters.

The father-of-three was tortured repeatedly in a villa in the Algiers neighbourhood of El Biar. Josette Audin was told 10 days later her husband had escaped while being transferred between jails.

This remained the official version of events until 2014, when Macron’s predecessor, Francois Hollande, acknowledged Audin died in detention.

A 2014 book by journalist Jean-Charles Deniau claimed the mathematician was killed by a French army officer on the orders of General Jacques Massu.

That order was confirmed by another general, Paul Aussaresses, who died in 2013 after admitting he tortured and killed dozens of prisoners.
