Bechem United, a Ghana Premier League team, has reportedly parted ways with coach Bismark Kobi Mensah due to the team’s unimpressive performance so far this season.
Kobi Mensah, who previously coached Karela United, joined Bechem United before the start of the 2023/24 season, replacing Kasim Ocansey Mingle, who left to join Nations FC.
Despite a slow start to the season, Bechem United showed improvement, going unbeaten for ten games in the first half of the season. However, their inconsistency has led to Kobi Mensah’s departure.
The team has struggled since the league resumed, losing narrowly to Nsoatreman FC in their previous game.
It is unclear who will replace Kobi Mensah, but sources suggest that former Great Olympics coach Annor Walker could be a top candidate.
Bechem United is currently in ninth place with 26 points after 18 games, having won 7, drawn 5, and lost 6.
They will face league leaders Samartex this weekend under the guidance of an interim coach as they look to improve their performance.
The morning show host of Wontumi Tv and Radio, Oheneba Nana Asiedu, has claimed that the reported attacks against the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, will continue until he meets his untimely death.
In an interview on Wontumi TV, Oheneba narrated what he believes to be the account of how Chairman Wontumi and the late Deputy Finance Minister and Ejisu MP, Dr John Kumah were poisoned during their stay in Tamale while aiding the Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign.
According to him, Chairman Wontumi was the intended victim in a food poisoning incident that he believes resulted in the tragic death of former Deputy Finance Minister John Kumah.
He indicated that for the betterment of the party, all sorts of untoward actions are executed, and some members are abandoned and made to bear the brunt of certain actions they are either aware of or not.
He therefore believes that the alleged attacks against Chairman Wontumi will continue since he remains alive after the reported poisoning attack.
“People are losing their businesses and family but others say for the sake of the party. I am saying Chairman Wontumi was the target. They will not stop too. That’s why I’m saying Chairman Wontumi’s father should advise his son. His wife and children should advise him because they will not stop and have not stopped. They will do it again,” he said.
Deputy Finance Minister, Dr John Kumah, passed away on Thursday, March 7, 2024.
According to reports, he collapsed in his office and was swiftly transported to a hospital for medical treatment.
Subsequently, due to a decline in his condition, he was flown out of the country.
Sources say he was flown back into the country to aid his recovery. The cause of his death is currently unknown.
Poisoned 'Akomfem': Blow-by-blow account of how John Kumah, Chairman Wontumi were allegedly poisoned
The morning show host of Wontumi Tv and Radio, Oheneba Nana Asiedu, has alleged that the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, came under attack for allegedly attempting to put the late Deputy Finance Minister Dr John Kumah in the limelight for the running mate role.
Oheneba Nana Asiedu noted that while in Tamale to aid Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s political campaign, Chairman Wontumi received a call from a high-profile personality of the NPP.
According to him, the purpose of the call was to question Chairman Wontumi over the presence of John Kumah in Tamale.
“In Tamale, a high-profile personality of this party called Chairman Wontumi, fighting him that why Chairman Wontumi had send John Kumah to Tamale and projecting him there to become running mate.”
Oheneba Nana Asiedu made this revelation on Wontumi radio following the death of John Kumah on Thursday, March 7, which he linked to the alleged poisoning case in October last year.
“No one can tell me that this incident that happened is not related or has no link to the running mate,” he insisted.
Oheneba is of the assertion that the late John Kumah and Chairman Wontumi were poisoned during their stay in Tamale in October 2023. He believes the Guinea fowl meat the duo consumed had been poisoned.
Poisoned 'Akomfem': Blow-by-blow account of how John Kumah, Chairman Wontumi were allegedly poisoned
The New Patriotic Party flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Chief of Staff, Frema Opare, and other prominent members of the ruling party paid a visit to the family of the late Deputy Finance Minister and MP for Ejisu, Dr John Kumah today.
Former General Secretary of the ruling party Kwabena Agyepong and the Director General for the National Lottery Authority (NLA), Sammi Awuku per reports, also paid a courtesy visit to the family.
Other reports have it that John Kumah was poisoned.
This claim is yet to be clarified but as it stands now, the cause of his death is currently unknown.
Dr. Kumah, the Member of Parliament for Ejisu in the Ashanti Region, was known for his diverse roles as a Lawyer, Entrepreneur, and dedicated Politician.
He is survived by Apostle Mrs. Lilian Kumah, and six children.
The morning show host of Wontumi Tv and Radio, Oheneba Nana Asiedu, has provided details of how Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, was taken care of after being poisoned while assisting Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign in Tamale.
Oheneba noted that on October 23, he woke up at dawn to see 15 missed calls from Chairman Wontumi after he ate ‘poisoned’ Guinea fowl meat with the late Deputy Finance Minister Dr John Kumah. He then proceeded to his place (Modern Hotel) to find out the issue after failing to reach him via phone.
“I woke up around 1 am check on what Chairman would wear. I had seen Chairman’s calls about 15 of them. I tried calling. I asked Marfo if he had gotten calls from Chairman. He saw 2 missed calls and tried reaching Chairman but no response. So I went to Chairman’s place.”
He revealed that he knocked for about 3 to 5 minutes until Chairman Wontumi came to open the door.
When Chairman opened the door, he was just in boxers and not in a good state, he said.
“You could tell he had crawled and opened the door. He had thrown up on his bed and the ground. He had vomited in the washroom.”
Oheneba said he reached out to a member of Dr Bawumia’s team, who got some members of the Vice President’s medical team to assist.
“I called Kamar, he is part of Bawumia’s team. So he called someone. So a top doctor of Bawumia and two other nurses came.
Instantly, they placed about 7 drips of water on Chairman and injected him,” he said, adding that “I heard the doctor say they suspect food poisoning and so they are going to treat them on food poisoning.”
According to him, John Kumah felt he was okay, so he was not treated.
“It was only Chairman who was treated. John Kumah’s reaction was not like Chairman’s,” he reiterated.
But it took the next day for John Kumah to call for assistance as he saw his condition worsen.
Poisoned 'Akomfem': Blow-by-blow account of how John Kumah, Chairman Wontumi were allegedly poisoned
The morning show host of Wontumi Tv and Radio, Oheneba Nana Asiedu, has accused the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Northern Regional Financial Secretary of being behind the alleged poisoning attack against the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi and the late Deputy Finance Minister Dr John Kumah.
According to Oheneba Nana Asiedu, after Chairman Wontumi started receiving treatment after throwing up following the Guinea fowl meat he ate with Dr John Kumah, he received an unexpected guest.
In his narration of how the unfortunate incident happened, Mr Asiedu noted that not many knew of the itinerary after a few individuals were brought up to speed on the wellbeing of Chairman Wontumi on October 23, 2023 while at Tamale.
However, a party executive, despite being likely aware that the Vice President’s campaign team had move from Tamale, visited Chairman Wontumi who had just taken ill, together with John Kumah.
The man in a blue suit, he said moved straight to Chairman Wontumi’s room and asked of his wellbeing.
“Around 10am when everyone knows that campaign team moves around 6am, the Veep team has moved so the assumption is that if everyone has left, then Chairman has also left, then a gentleman came there. Straight to Chairman Wontumi’s room. He knocked on the door, he was in a blue suit, I am told he is the Financial Secretary of the party in the region. We didn’t want to open. John Kumah opened the door for him and asked him why, he said he is coming to greet chairman. We told him Chairman had slept.”
“As to how the gentleman knew that the team had moved but Chairman Wontumi was not part, I don’t know. And how he got to know Chairman Wontumi’s room number I don’t know,” he said.
After John Kumah told him Chairman Wontumi was asleep, he left and did not return.
Poisoned 'Akomfem': Blow-by-blow account of how John Kumah, Chairman Wontumi were allegedly poisoned
Oheneba Nana Asiedu made this revelation on Wontumi radio following the death of John Kumah on Thursday, March 7, which has been linked to the alleged poisoning case in October last year.
The morning show host of Wontumi Tv and Radio, Oheneba Nana Asiedu, has corroborated reports by his colleague in the media space, Captain Smart, that the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi and the late Deputy Finance Minister Dr John Kumah were poisoned.
In an interview on Wontumi Radio, Oheneba Nana Asiedu, alleged that the duo were poisoned on October 22, 2023, at Tamale, and not Kumasi as earlier reported by Captain Smart, where some NPP members had gathered to aid the campaign of Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.
“It didn’t happen in Kumasi but Tamale. We were in Tamale, me, Chairman Wontumi, John Kumah and my own brother and one of Chairman Wontumi’s boys, Kwabena Marfo,” he first clarified.
According to him, the team was to move from Tamale to Walewale but due to some delays, they had to return to Tamale. Oheneba noted that he stopped his work to join Chairman Wontumi in Tamale whereas John Kumah moved from Accra to Tamale.
“We returned from the campaign and were to move from Tamale and go to Walewale and move to the North East. But that night, there was a delay with the campaign team because of politics. So we had to come back to Tamale to sleep there.
“Originally, sister Afia was to go with Chairman Wontumi but she couldn’t I don’t know what came on me but I said no, I don’t think Chairman should go to Tamale alone. So I halted my work to go with him. I called Marfo to go with us and he told us he would get back in the evening
John Kumah came from Accra to Tamale. I met Chairman Wontumi at 4am at Asokwa. Marfo came late but we waited for him,” he recounted.
He revealed he had the urge to make some alterations to the rooms they stayed in and what they ate.
“When we got to Tamale, I don’t know what came over me. When we handling the reservation, I switched the room meant for me to Chairman and I made Marfo take Chairman’s room. And I slept in a room for Marfo.
“When it is time for food, I use my name and go for food and bring it to Chairman Wontumi. I take Chairman’s food for Marfo then I take Margo’s food.”
On October 22, 2023, he said they planned to leave Tamale but could not.
“We kept long during our rounds. The original plan was to leave Tamale and sleep at Walewale but we couldn’t.”
This unexpected event he said prevented them from making preparations ahead and had to resolve to the last minute decision taken.
Oheneba stated that he and one Marfo lodged at a different hotel while Chairman Wontumi and John Kumah slept in another, however, still in Tamale.
He narrated, “Because we were leaving, the hotel arrangement was not the best and they told us that Marfo and I should go sleep at Modern Hotel in Tamale so Chairman and John Kumah sleep Marial in Tamale but it were all at the same place.
“John Kumah came alone to meet us at Tamale. Chairman’s room number was 32 and John Kumah’s was 31.”
According to him, upon arrival, Chairman Wontumi and John Kumah were provided the meat of a Guinea fowl.
“When they got to the hotel, someone brought Guinea fowl meat. Only Chairman and John Kumah. It was killed so you can eat.”
He noted that due to the pressure during campaigns, politicians sometimes skip some meals.
“They had not eaten, so they ate it. Under normal circumstances, we all sit and eat together. But because we didn’t know that we would sleep, they couldn’t make enough preparation for us all to eat together. So the Akofem was just for Chairman and John Kumah.
That was when the issue started. They finished eating and went to bed,” he said.
Oheneba noted that on October 23, he woke up at dawn to see 15 missed calls from Chairman Wontumi. He then proceeded to his place to find out the issue after failing to reach him via phone.
He noted that Chairman Wontumi is not one who delays in answering his door.
“I knocked for about 3 to 5 minutes before he came to open the door. When Chairman opened the door, he was just in boxers. You could tell he had crawled and opened the door. He had thrown up on his bed and the ground. He had vomited in the washroom.”
He then went to see John Kumah, who then told him “Chairman ate more of the meat because he was hungry.”
“I just ate a little. John Kumah told me this. So I have thrown up so it’s not like Chairman’s. I had not seen chairman like that ever on that October 23,” he said.
Oheneba said he reached out to a member of Dr Bawumia’s team who got some members of the Vice President’s medical team to assist.
According to him, John Kumah felt he was okay and so he was not treated. “It was only Chairman who was treated. John Kumah’s reaction was not like Chairman’s,” he reiterated.
But it took the next day for John Kumah to call for assistance as he saw his condition worsen.

“So it was in the evening, around 11pm that he called saying we should allow his driver come to him that he is not well. But he had spoken to his doctor who told him the drugs to get. So we got the drugs
“The John Kumah that I know, from that day till he passed, I’ve never seen him as how he used to be, well and fit,” he added.

Ghana’s President, Nana Akufo-Addo, has assured the rest of Africa that the 2023 African Games, hosted in Ghana, will be a joyful and thrilling event.
The competition began on Monday, March 4, and will run until March 2023.
Addressing attendees at Ghana’s 67th Independence Day Anniversary Parade in Koforidua, the President expressed optimism that Ghana would once again set a precedent for Africa to emulate through its hosting of the games.
“I’m not promising a Ghana clean sweep in the track and field events. That will be a miracle.
“I’m promising a happy and exciting month for all our visitors. We in Ghana know how to set the lead; we did it in 1957 when we were the first African nation in Sub-Saharan Africa to gain independence from colonial bondage.
“We owe it to ourselves and to the rest of Africa to be that shining Black Star.”
The host nation, Team Ghana, has had a challenging start to the 2023 African Games, failing to secure any medals in the first four days of competition. This is in contrast to other sports like tennis, where medals have already been won.
Former Member of Parliament for Jomoro, Samia Yaba Nkrumah, daughter of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, has called on President Akufo-Addo not to sign the Bill on Human Sexual Rights and Family Values, popularly known as the anti-LGBTQ bill.
In an interview with the Daily Graphic, Samia Nkrumah described the bill as overly harsh and unfair. She expressed concern that the legislation could create division, a result she strongly opposes.
“I pray the president does not sign it, or assent to it. I believe it is a brutal, harsh and unjust law, and we don’t need it. We are against rape, paedophilia, against all these situations that people seem to be terrified of gays and I think we need to educate ourselves.
“But most importantly I don’t support anything that brings division and torments the people of Ghana. We are all Ghanaians, and we need to protect and take care of each other,” she said.
The bill, which was passed in Parliament on February 28, 2024, criminalizes LGBTQ activities and prohibits their promotion, advocacy, and funding. Offenders could face imprisonment ranging from 6 months to 3 years, while those promoting or sponsoring such activities could be imprisoned for 3 to 5 years.
The bill has been met with criticism from various quarters, including the United States Ambassador to Ghana, Virginia Evelyn Palmer, who threatened to sever business relations with Ghana if the bill becomes law.
In response to the bill, Mr. Sky has filed an application with the Supreme Court, seeking a declaration that the legislation is null and void. Mr. Sky argues that the bill infringes on several fundamental human rights guaranteed by the Constitution, and his legal action aims to uphold these rights.
President Akufo-Addo has clarified that the government will not enforce any provisions of the bill until the Supreme Court reaches a verdict on the matter.
In a circular shared by Director of communications at the office of the President, Eugene Arhin, the President said, “l am aware that last week’s bi-partisan passage by Parliament of the Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, on a Private Member’s motion, has raised considerable anxieties in certain quarters of the diplomatic community and amongst some friends of Ghana that she may be turning her back on her, hitherto, enviable, longstanding record on human rights observance and attachment to the rule of law. I want to assure you that no such back-sliding will be contemplated or occasioned.”
President Akufo-Addo clarified that the Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill has not yet been presented to him for formal action.
Zambia forward Barbra Banda has completed a historic transfer to Orlando Pride, making it the second-most expensive women’s transfer in history.
The 23-year-old joins the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) club for a reported fee of $740,000 (£581,000) from Chinese club Shanghai Shengli.
This move follows closely behind the world-record transfer of Zambia teammate Racheal Kundananji to Bay FC for $860,000 (£685,000) last month.
Banda has signed a four-year deal with Pride and is set to become one of the highest-paid players in the NWSL. Additionally, Pride has secured a sell-on clause for any future transfer of Banda, who boasts an impressive record of 41 goals in 52 appearances for Shanghai Shengli.
“I am very excited to join Orlando Pride. It’s a great club and I love what they’re building,” said Banda.
“The NWSL is one of the most competitive and strongest leagues in the world so it’s very humbling to get a chance to play in it.
“I can’t wait to meet my new team-mates and start working with them. I hope to help the team to do great things and win a lot of trophies together.”
The forward made history as the first female player to score back-to-back hat-tricks at the Olympic Games, achieving this feat against the Netherlands and China in 2021.
Pride owner and chairman Mark Wilf said: “It has always been our vision to build Orlando Pride into an NWSL Championship contender and we believe investment in the world’s best players is a prerequisite for success.
“Barbra Banda brings a new level of technical skill, physicality and pace to our attack and she is an exciting and entertaining addition to our roster. Our fans have much to look forward to as we prepare to kick-off the regular season.”
Minister-designate for the Ministry of Health, Dr. Bernard Okoe-Boye, has defended the government’s decision to demolish the La General Hospital, branding it a “death trap structure” that posed imminent danger to its stakeholders.
During his vetting by Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Thursday, March 7, Dr. Okoe-Boye, drawing from his experience as a medical practitioner, expressed concerns about the structural integrity of the facility.
He highlighted how the hospital’s management had raised alarm over the safety of the building, leading to a structural audit to assess its condition.
“For La General Hospital, because I worked there, I have a personal experience of some of the discussions that led to the demolition. When I was working in La, there were occasions while in the ward, a concrete slab would fall off the building and hit the ground. That structure was a death trap.”
Dr. Okoe-Boye also mentioned that during his tenure as the Member of Parliament for Ledzokuku, he accompanied Second Lady Samira Bawumia to the facility to seek support.
“I personally visited La General Hospital with Mrs Samira Bawumia, during my first term and made a case that there ought to have been some attention to the hospital. I’m happy to say that when we met the management of the La General Hospital, they told us that their major concern was that the facility they were working in was not safe for their working environment, and these were the concerns that led to a structural audit. The audit stated emphatically that it was not fit for service,” he recounted.
Furthermore, Dr. Okoe-Boye reaffirmed his dedication to collaborating with the residents of La to ensure the successful completion of the project.
“I’m going to work with the people of La and the neighbours to ensure the full completion of the hospital,” he assured.
The reconstruction of La General Hospital represents a pivotal moment in Ghana’s healthcare infrastructure development.
Despite the initial controversy over the decision to demolish the building due to structural issues, the start of reconstruction work demonstrates a commitment to enhancing healthcare facilities for the people.
The news of contractors beginning work on the site, as outlined in the 2024 budget presented to Parliament by the Finance Minister, indicates significant progress in the project.
This development is in line with President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s vision of prioritizing healthcare infrastructure and services across the country.
Health Minister designate, Dr. Bernard Okoe-Boye, is advocating for the removal of taxes on dialysis consumables to ease the financial burden on renal patients in Ghana.
His call comes after recent fee hikes for dialysis treatment at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital and Korle Bu Teaching Hospital raised concerns about the affordability of care for patients. Some patients have tragically died due to financial constraints.
During his vetting process, Dr. Okoe-Boye suggested exploring assistance from the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) to help public health facilities providing dialysis treatment.
He also expressed support for removing the cap on the NHIS levy to enhance healthcare financing.
If confirmed as Health Minister, Dr. Okoe-Boye plans to prioritize these initiatives to improve the healthcare financing system and ensure better access to treatment for renal patients in Ghana.
Health Minister designate, Dr. Bernard Okoe-Boye, has reiterated his stance against same-sex relationships while affirming his commitment to treating LGBTQ+ individuals with respect and dignity.
During his vetting process by the Parliamentary Appointments Committee, Dr. Okoe-Boye, a follower of Christ, stated that he would not advocate for same-sex marriage.
However, he emphasized the importance of not alienating or dehumanizing LGBTQ+ individuals, highlighting his professional duty as a doctor to provide care without discrimination.
Dr. Bernard Okoe Boye said: “I am a follower of Christ, I am not someone who will be an advocate for same sex marriage. However, as a doctor, my work tells me not to push such people away or make them feel less human. So I am a professional but I still stand by my faith.”

This comes amid the recent approval of a bill by Parliament criminalizing LGBTQ activities and prohibiting their promotion, advocacy, and funding. The legislation stipulates prison sentences ranging from 6 months to 5 years for individuals involved in such activities.
The bill’s approval has sparked criticism from various quarters, including the United States Ambassador to Ghana, Virginia Evelyn Palmer, and the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk.
In response to the bill, Mr. Sky has filed an application with the Supreme Court, seeking a declaration that the legislation is null and void. Mr. Sky argues that the bill infringes on several fundamental human rights guaranteed by the Constitution, and his legal action aims to uphold these rights.

West Ham captain Kurt Zouma candidly addressed his team’s challenges following their 1-0 loss to Freiburg.
The defeat puts West Ham in a difficult position for the Europa League quarter-finals, with Michael Gregoritsch’s late goal securing a crucial first-leg win for the hosts.
Despite the loss, Zouma acknowledged the need for improvement, as the Hammers struggled to assert dominance, matching Freiburg with four shots on target and holding just 41% possession.
Having previously defeated Freiburg in both home and away matches during the group stage, West Ham remains hopeful of a comeback in the last-16 second leg at the London Stadium. However, Zouma emphasized the necessity for significant improvement in their performance.
The French defender, 29, told TNT Sports: “It was a tough game today, we didn’t play well throughout the whole game. We didn’t have many chances.
“There is another game next week and hopefully we can play better.
“There are many things [which could be to blame], we didn’t start the game the right way, maybe physically but no reason.
“There are days like this in football.”
Despite a below-par performance, West Ham felt they should have been awarded a penalty in stoppage time when the ball appeared to strike the arm of Noah Weisshaupt in an unnatural position.
The referee’s decision not to award the penalty, despite a lengthy VAR check, was controversial. However, Zouma insisted that the late drama should not be used as an excuse for the defeat.
He added: “I don’t know [if it was the right decision]. The decision took a bit of time and the referee took a lot of time. It is what it is.
“The game is over. I don’t want to go back to it now.”
The Attorney General has informed the High Court in Accra of his intention to file a nolle prosequi to discontinue charges against Dr. Sylvester Anemana, a former Chief Director of the Ministry of Health.
Dr. Anemana, who is currently out of the country for medical treatment, is the second accused person in a trial involving Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, a former Deputy Minister for Finance, and Richard Dzakpa, a businessman.
The trio is standing trial for allegedly causing financial loss to the State amounting to over €2.37 million in connection with the purchase of ambulances.
Dr. Forson was granted self-recognizance bail of GH¢3 million for allegedly willfully causing financial loss to the State. He is also facing an additional charge of “intentionally misapplying public property” contrary to the Public Property Protection Act, 1977 (SMCD 140).
Dr. Anemana was granted bail of one million Ghana Cedis with three sureties, one of whom must be a public servant not below the rank of a director.
Dzakpa, on the other hand, was granted bail of five million Ghana Cedis with three sureties, one of whom must provide documents of landed property for justification.
The intention to discontinue charges against Dr. Anemana was made known to the Court by Richard Gymbiby, a Principal State Attorney, who was led by Godfred Dame.
This decision came after Dr. Anemana’s wife joined the proceedings from India, where her husband was receiving treatment, and informed the Court that he was in the theatre.
“He cannot walk and see currently,” she added.
Justice Afia Serwah Asare Botwe, a Court of Appeal judge serving as an additional High Court judge, has adjourned the case to allow Dzakpa (A3) to begin his defence.
Thomas Obeng, Counsel for A3, informed the Court that they planned to call one witness, along with the accused person, who would testify orally.
The case is scheduled to resume on March 12, 2024, for further proceedings.
Nigeria’s Flying Eagles faced a tough challenge in their opening game of the 2023 African Games as they were defeated by Uganda in a thrilling encounter at the Accra Sports Stadium.
Ladan Bosso’s Nigeria U20 side suffered a setback in their African Games campaign with a 2-1 loss to Uganda.
Despite responding swiftly to Usama Arafat’s 33rd-minute opener with an equalizer from Sadiq Isiyaka before halftime, Nigeria ultimately fell short as Uganda secured all three points with a brilliant long-range strike in the dying moments of the game.
Nigeria struggled to match Uganda’s intensity throughout the match, with Arafat’s early goal exposing defensive vulnerabilities. While Nigeria showed resilience to level the score, Uganda’s persistence paid off as they clinched victory with a spectacular long-range effort.
In another match played on Thursday, Senegal claimed a narrow 1-0 win over South Sudan, with Lamine Sadio scoring the only goal of the game.
Rangers were held to a 2-2 draw in the first leg of their Europa League last-16 tie against Benfica, surrendering the lead twice in a dramatic encounter.
Philippe Clement’s side faced injury setbacks but managed to take an early lead through returning midfielder Tom Lawrence’s header. However, Angel Di Maria equalized for Benfica with a penalty in first-half added time after John Souttar was penalized for handball following a VAR review.
Dujon Sterling restored the Rangers‘ lead in added time with his first career goal, but Connor Goldson’s own goal in the second half leveled the tie. The result sets up an intriguing second leg in Glasgow next Thursday.
Benfica had several big names in their starting lineup, including Argentina World Cup winners Nicolas Otamendi and Di Maria. Rangers, on the other hand, faced attacking challenges due to injuries to key wingers, resulting in a lack of natural width in their attack.
Despite the draw, Rangers will be confident of progressing in the return leg, aiming to secure a spot in the quarter-finals of the Europa League.
Ghana’s U20 team is set to begin their campaign on Friday against Congo in Group A at the Accra Sports Stadium, followed by matches against The Gambia and Benin.
Despite Ghana’s recent struggles at youth tournaments, failing to qualify for the Africa U20 Cup of Nations since 2021, Offei expressed his team’s hunger and readiness to perform for the nation at the Africa Games.
“There’s no pressure. We are fully prepared and we really have a good squad and the boys are ready and hungry so we don’t feel any pressure,” he said at the pre-match presser.
“Our motivation is that we are the host country and that’s enough motivation for us. Secondly, we are Ghana, we are very hungry and ready to deliver. We just have to showcase our abilities and represent the country as best as we can,” he added.
In the group’s other game, Benin will face the Gambia on Friday.
Radio and TV presenter at Onua TV/FM, Captain Smart, also known as Blessed Godsbrain Smart, has alleged that an attempt was made on the life of Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.
In one of his shows, Captain Smart claimed that Dr Bawumia was poisoned and for that reason, had to be flown to the UK for medical attention.
According to him, since that striking incident, the Vice President has ceased drinking water whenever he attends cabinet meetings.
“What happened before Bawumia was rushed to UK. Statements were flying all over. Some said he had suffered mild stroke. Am I telling lies. It was no stroke. He was poisoned. If he says I’m telling lies, he should go to any media house and call me, or he should sue me and leave Media General.”
Captain Smart alleged that poisoning has become a medium that some individuals in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) use to get rid of people.
“Bawumia was poisoned. When was the last time he went to a cabinet meeting and drank water. Common water he can’t drink. This issue of poisoning, where is it coming from that it is being used in the NPP. When the doctors noticed what happened they said we can look at you but the machines needed for you to be better are not here.”
“I’m telling you, putting my job on the line at Media General if I’m lying I should be sacked or sued by His Excellence or Dr. Bawumia or Samira that her husband was poisoned, she nearly lost her husband some time ago, they don’t want to reveal the secret but I know, some members of the NPP want to silence her husband,” Captain Smart added.
In January 2018, photos of Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia who was on a medical leave in London hit social media amid claims that his health was worsening.
Some members of the opposition National Democratic Congress speculated that the Vice President’s health was deteriorating and was likely to be replaced by President Akufo-Addo.
This allegation by Captain Smart comes at a time when the country is mourning the late Dr John Kumah, a deputy finance minister who passed away on March 7, 2024.
According to reports, he collapsed in his office and was swiftly transported to a hospital for medical treatment.
Subsequently, due to a decline in his condition, he was flown out of the country. Sources say he was flown back into the country to aid his recovery.
There are other reports that he was poisoned. This claim was also made by Captain Smart and other users on social media who say they are residents of Ejisu, the constituency Dr Kumah represented up until his death.
“John Kumah and some prominent individuals met. The whole issue is due to John Kumah’s ambitions, he must be stopped from reaching a level that would make him unstoppable. Someone should call Chairman Wontumi and ask him if he did not also eat the same food.”
“John Kumah was intentionally poisoned,” Captain Smart’s voice can be heard in a video circulating on social media.
Manchester City manager Gareth Taylor expressed anger over the refereeing decisions in their 1-0 semi-final loss to Chelsea.
Lauren James’ goal in the first half secured Chelsea’s fifth consecutive Conti Cup final appearance and set up a thrilling final against London rivals Arsenal.
In the closing moments of the game at the Joie Stadium, there was controversy as Alex Greenwood seemed to be fouled in the box. Taylor was adamant that it should have been a penalty, adding to his frustration with the outcome of the match.
The 51-year-old told the BBC: “I just don’t understand sometimes these decisions that go against us.
— Manchester City Women (@ManCityWomen) March 7, 2024
He said: “We’re the team with the ascendency, we play five minutes of added time.
“Here earlier in the season it was 11 minutes and went to 13.
“When we went down there [Chelsea] it was nine minutes and goes to 12.
“I mean come on, that’s not five minutes there of time when Hannah Hampton is choking the clock up.”
Despite the loss, Taylor was pleased with his team’s performance, highlighting their dominance in possession and their 10 shots on target.
The City boss said: “We were magnificent tonight. I thought Hampton was their best player and that told a story.
“I couldn’t have asked for much more from the players.
“Of course we needed to score a goal but their goalkeeper had to make many saves in the second half.”
Manchester City is enjoying a strong season in the Women’s Super League, currently level on points with Chelsea at the top of the table. When asked about the potential psychological impact of their loss against Chelsea, Taylor remained confident in his team’s performance.
He responded: “No, because it was full of positives. Why would we dwell on it?
“There is so much to take from this game. For us it’s using this game as a benchmark.
“We always knew it was going to be tight margins. When two good teams come together, it’s always going to be fairly tight.”
A mentally challenged man in a shocking incident found himself in trouble after carrying out an unexpected act that left many startled.
The man first halted a private car in its tracks, standing directly in its path. Suddenly, he leaped onto the hood of the black car, startling the driver. He then removed one of the car’s wipers and began smashing the windshield.
Despite the driver’s calm attempts to reason with him, the man remained undeterred and even attempted to attack the driver. This alarming behavior prompted a group of men to intervene, swiftly bringing the man down to the ground.
Three of the men, visibly angered by the damage caused, began to beat the mentally challenged man. However, other individuals soon arrived at the scene and managed to prevent further beatings, ensuring that the situation did not escalate any further.
As Ghanaians mourn the late Deputy Finance Minister John Kumah, a video involving the deceased that caused controversy last year has resurfaced.
In July 2023, a viral video that captured public attention, saw an elderly woman, believed to be in her late 50s, screaming and labelling the late deputy minister a thief.
She alleged that John Kumah acquired her land under the pretence of a government project, but instead, he is allegedly using it for his private business.
The visibly upset woman passionately demanded the return of her land, expressing her outrage and determination to expose the deputy minister’s actions.
“I didn’t know John Kumah is a thief. He is a thief.
“He is an MP who is a thief. He should give us our land,” she said as she walked about on the supposed land that she is accusing the deputy minister of stealing.
“I can’t wait to broadcast it to everybody that John Kumah is a thief. John Kumah has stolen our land; he should give us our land,” she claimed.
Another voice heard in the video supported the woman’s claims, stating that John Kumah deceived them when he asked for the land for a government project but later used it for personal gain.
“You came to ask for the land that the government is about to put up a project here, and you are packing cars on the land. Now, you are coming to use the land for your private business.
“We should vote for you only to do this to us, John Kumah you are done. We’ve been quiet, he should know that this is his last time as an MP here,” he also said.

Following the allegations, Dr John Ampontuah Kumah, denied news circulating on social media that he had illegally taken over a parcel of land in his constituency.
In a statement shared by The Chronicles, he wrote, “I would like to refute these baseless claims and set the record straight, regarding the true events surrounding the acquisition and use of the said land.
As many of you are aware, during my campaign to become the MP for Ejisu, I made a solemn promise to the people that I would establish an asphaltic plant to address the road deficiencies in the constituency.
To realize this vision and create job opportunities, the ‘EJISU Club 100’ was established to collaborate with Sogood Engineering and Construction Company to undertake this project, among several others.
In the pursuit of fulfilling this commitment, I approached my family chief, Nana Kofi Agyei, for a piece of land for the construction of the asphaltic plant.
Nana Kofi Agyei gifted me the land in the presence of other family members, after the Aseda custom were done.
The intention behind this gift was never for personal gain, but to help uplift the community and improve the lives of its residents through job creation and enhanced infrastructure.
The progress of the asphaltic plant construction, which has reached an impressive 90% completion stage, stands as a testament to my unwavering dedication to fulfilling the promises made to my constituents during my campaign.
Regrettably, it has come to my attention that a few members of the family are expressing discontent over the gift of the land by the family chief. A land they have no claim to.
I acknowledge their right to have differing opinion but strongly oppose their unwarranted insults and attacks directed at me and wrongly claiming that I have forcefully taken over their lands.
In a response to the claims, I have already taken the necessary steps by reporting the matter to the Ejisu Police Service for the arrest of the individuals involved.
I have also notified the family chief about the very distasteful actions of the individuals involved, for the necessary customary actions to be taken against them.
As is evident in the video, there are no private houses built on the land but rather heavy duty vehicles and quarters for workers working on the asphaltic plant, as well as equipment for the asphaltic plants among several others.
It is very disheartening that in my quest to address a major challenge in the constituency, I have rather been attacked and vilified for an act I have not taken.
I would like to urge the public to disregard the content of the video and I admonish the media against further spreading its defamatory content or face legal action.”

Pastor John Anosike, President and Senior Pastor of New World Faith Ministries (Spirit Revelation Church), has stirred controversy with his recent sermon claiming that Ghana hosts the strongest temple of the occult in Africa.
He went on to explain that these temples are where the greatest principalities lie, operating from Ghana to other countries in Africa and beyond.
Pastor Anosike claimed to have been instructed by God to go to Ghana to combat these forces. He mentioned that there is a light or frequency, like an electrical light, powering these temples and that he intends to disconnect them.
During his sermon, Pastor Anosike stated, “I have a special assignment in Ghana. There is a war that is required in Ghana. Until that warfare is done, Ghana as a country and ministries in Ghana will be under severe attack. There are seven powerful demonic temples, the strongest temple of occult in the whole Africa is in Ghana.”
His comments have sparked a debate among Ghanaians, with some questioning the basis of his claims and others expressing concern about the implications of his statements.
President Akufo-Addo has announced Ghana’s upcoming entry into large-scale salt production, expressing confidence that this initiative would bring significant economic transformation to Ghana.
He credited the Ada Songhor Salt project led by Electrochem Salt Mine Limited for its achievement while speaking at the nation’s 67th Independence Day celebration in Koforidua, Eastern Region, on March 6, 2024.
The President revealed that the project had commenced operations after years of disputes that had previously halted salt extraction at the site.
President Akufo-Addo highlighted that this project represents the largest salt exploitation endeavor on the African continent.
“The other major project that is coming on stream, which is bound to make a dramatic change to the economy, is the Ada Songhor Salt project, being spearheaded by Electrochem Salt Mine Ltd, led by the dynamic Ghanaian entrepreneur, Mr. Daniel McKorley, aka McDan. After many years of disputes, which prevented the exploitation of salt at the site, work has finally started and salt will be mined on a large commercial scale,” he disclosed.
According to the President, Electrochem Salt Mine is poised to become the biggest salt producing facility in Africa due to its initial ability to produce some six hundred and fifty thousand metric tons of salt per annum, and expanding its productive capacity to one million metric tonnes this year, and to two million metric tonnes by 2027, at ninety-nine-point-nine-nine-percent purity.
“These are figures that should spell a significant change in the economy, and cheer us up,” he added.
Gen. Buhari, believed to be a staunch member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has slammed the National Democratic Congress (NDC) MPs and a senior lecturer at the University of Ghana, Prof Kobby Mensah, over the recent personal commissioning of the National Cathedral project.
On March 6, North Tongu MP, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Ningo-Prampram MP, Sam Nartey George, NDC Communications Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, among others visited the National Cathedral site to commission the ‘abandoned’ project as communicated by then Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta.
Mr Ablakwa engages security personnel at National Cathedral site
The move has upset one @Gen. Buhari who argues that the same action must be reciprocated for Hope City project, which was launched by former President John Mahama in 2013.
In March 2013, then President John Mahama launched the Hope City project to build a $10bn (£6.6bn) IT hub near the capital, Accra.
The ambitious project was the brainchild of Ghanaian businessman Roland Agambire, head of local technology group RLG Communications.
The hub’s sustainable facilities was to include an assembly plant for various tech products, business offices, an IT university and a hospital, as well as housing and recreation spaces, including restaurants, theaters and sports centers.
Agambire, one of Ghana’s top businessmen, noted that his company was financing 30% of the project, while the remainder would be funded by a wide array of investors and through a stock-buying scheme.
Construction was expected to begin by June 2013 and completed – within three years.
But that did not happen and it believed that the project is nothing more than an empty plot of land, covered by just a few shrubs and the odd Neem tree.
Reacting to this, @Gen. Buhari noted that “I’m sure (Prof Kobby Mensah) will lead us to commission this Mahama’s legacy next week.”
“This is the $10 billion Hope City project site, after pumping $10billion, not even a single block was laid,” he claimed.
It is unknown the exact amount of money that was pumped into the project, however, information available indicates that the facility would cost $10 billion.
This is the $10 billion Hope City project site, after pumping $10billion, not even a single block was laid, I’m sure @thePOE_T will lead us to commission this Mahama’s legacy next week.
Pastor John Anosike, the President and Senior Pastor of New World Faith Ministries (Spirit Revelation Church), has issued a solemn warning about an impending spiritual war in Ghana.
During a sermon, Pastor Anosike emphasized the urgent need for this warfare, stating that until it occurs, Ghana will remain under severe attack.
“I have a special assignment in Ghana. There is a war that is required in Ghana. Until that warfare is done, Ghana as a country and ministries in Ghana will be under severe attack,” Pastor Anosike declared.
In his sermon, Pastor Anosike also made alarming claims about Ghana’s spiritual landscape, alleging that the country hosts the strongest temple of occult in the entire African continent.
“There are seven powerful demonic temples, the strongest temple of occult in the whole Africa is in Ghana,” he asserted.
According to Pastor Anosike, these temples house the greatest principalities, which he believes operate from Ghana to influence other countries in Africa and beyond. He claimed to have been instructed by God to address this spiritual threat, despite acknowledging the presence of a key individual hindering his mission.
“I know the realm they operate from. What we are going to do is to disconnect. There is a light, frequency like an electrical light that is powering these temples. I am coming to Ghana,” Pastor Anosike proclaimed.
Vice President of IMANI Africa, Bright Simons, has reacted to the news of London-based oil exploration company Tullow Oil’s $110 million loss after taxes for the fiscal year 2023.
The loss is primarily attributed to an impairment related to the Tweneboa, Enyenra, and Ntomme (TEN) development, where fields are experiencing a decline in productivity.
In response, Mr Simons noted that analysts had already registered their concerns about Tullow’s prospects. This included the Field’s productivity as well as the inability of the company to check its cost operations.
“Analysts on the ground in Ghana have been seriously worried about Tullow’s prospects for a while now. Besides field productivity issues, the incessant focus on “free cashflow” by the current bosses has not really reflected in cost performance,” he wrote.
He added, “Imagine the surprise, then, when Bloomberg reported this afternoon that folks are “surprised” about Tullow’s 2023 loss position following write-off of TEN reserves. Every analyst in Ghana knows both oil & gas at TEN are running out. Even worse, Jubilee is struggling too.”
1/ Analysts on the ground in Ghana have been seriously worried about Tullow's prospects for a while now. Besides field productivity issues, the incessant focus on "free cashflow" by the current bosses has not really reflected in cost performance. https://t.co/RwiCjBC1jI
This financial setback contrasts with the $49 million profit recorded in 2022. Despite the decline in profits, Tullow Oil’s revenue for 2023 remained substantial at $1.6 billion compared to $1.7 billion in the previous year.
Rahul Dhir, the Chief Executive Officer of Tullow Oil, described 2023 as a year marked by significant achievements. These achievements include the initiation of the Jubilee South East project, contributing to material production growth from the core operated field.
Dhir also highlighted the establishment of a new revenue stream through the sale of associated gas in Ghana and the growth of reserves in Gabon through license extensions.
He emphasized the company’s ability to generate free cash flow ahead of expectations despite challenges such as lower oil prices. Additionally, Tullow Oil secured a $400 million debt facility agreement with Glencore, demonstrating its access to long-term capital.
Looking ahead, Dhir reaffirmed the company’s commitment to operational excellence, capital efficiency, and strategic investments to drive growth. He expressed confidence in Tullow’s ability to create substantial value for investors, host nations, and stakeholders.
Tullow Oil highlighted significant developments in Ghana, particularly the Jubilee South East project’s production milestone in July 2023. This event marked a notable increase in field production, with average daily rates surging by 30% in the second half of the year compared to the first half.
Gross oil production from the Jubilee field averaged 83.4 thousand barrels of oil per day (32.5 thousand barrels of oil per day net) in 2023.
Looking forward, Tullow Oil anticipates the commencement of five new Jubilee wells in 2024, comprising three producers and two water injectors, further enhancing production capabilities.

Former Minority Leader in Parliament, Haruna Iddrisu, has accused Speaker Alban Bagbin of violating the constitution in the re-composition of the Parliamentary Service Board.
The Tamale South MP stated that Bagbin did not adhere to Article 124 of the 1992 Constitution, which requires the formation of a committee to advise the Speaker on re-composing the board following a reshuffle in the Minority caucus leadership last year.
Mr Iddrisu raised these concerns as a committee was being set up to advise the Speaker on re-composing the board after changes in the Majority leadership.
He criticized the prolonged absence of the reconstituted board, chaired by Bagbin, emphasizing that no one, including Bagbin, is above the 1992 Constitution.
“The changes in the Minority leadership happened over a year ago, so over the year, what has the Parliamentary Service Board been doing with the Speaker as chair with the participation of Ato Forson? That is unconstitutional, illegal, and unacceptable. The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, is not above the 1992 Constitution. He is not above the constitution, and therefore, when we are talking about illegalities, I worry when they are unconstitutional.”
Contrarily, Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin rejected Haruna Iddrisu’s allegations, stating that Speaker Bagbin adhered to due process in re-composing the Parliamentary Service Board.
“The contention of my very senior colleague and respected Minority Leader who is arguing that this has rather come too late, it has not, and I will want to argue with you on that. When you left the chair, the needful, as you complained about, was done, and the record bears me out. You are arguing that constitutionally, why has Speaker [Alban] Bagbin breached the constitution, and I did contend that he has not? The former leader of this House did the needful.”

Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has stated that victims of the Akosombo Dam Spillage have yet to receive benefits from the government’s allocation of GHC80 million.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo reiterated the government’s commitment to assisting the victims during the 67th Independence Day celebration in Koforidua.
He announced that GH¢80 million, out of the allocated GH¢220 million, has been released to support ongoing rehabilitation efforts in the affected communities.
The President emphasized, “Government will stop at nothing to restore normalcy to the lives and livelihoods of all affected persons.”
During an interview with the media, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa acknowledged that he has not yet seen any government initiatives benefiting the victims of the Akosombo Dam Spillage.
Despite this, he remains hopeful that the released funds will be effectively utilized for their intended purpose.
“We welcome the news but I will cautiously say that let us see the results of that. There’s been so many promises by the president and we don’t see it on the grounds.”
“So far I cannot confirm to you that I have seen any government project taking place on the grounds. It’s news we will welcome but I will be cautious because of the track record of this government and hope that that announcement of release of funds would translate on the ground,” he said.
Anybody who presumed the President of Ghana was going to sign the private member’s bill on the Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values (LGBTQ+ Bill) when it was eventually passed and presented for his assent has not studied the political biography of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo before and upon his assumption of office as President.
I had no doubt in my mind that no admonishment from any quarters, religious, cultural, social, or otherwise would persuade Nana Akufo-Addo to sign it when presented to him. Those who had conversations with me long before Parliament began to consider and pass the Bill will confirm my position on this matter.
As I told my interlocutors then, “self-preservation is the first law of nature” and Nana Akufo-Addo will be committing suicide to assent the LGBTQ+ Bill passed by Parliament into law. Nana Akufo-Addo’s long game, the aura he has built around himself as a democrat in the Western tradition, and all the ingratiation efforts he has invested in, will come to nought should he assent to the Bill upon passage. The fact that other citizens closely watching the Ghanaian political scene knew the difficulty the Bill was going to face when it got to the desk of the President was articulated by no less a person than Minority Leader Ato Forson.
Myjoyonline.com reported on 7 February 2024 while the anti-LGBTQ bill was under consideration in Parliament that Parliament had misgivings whether the President will assent to the bill when it is passed by Parliament. These misgivings led the Minority Leader Ato Forson to have stated that:
“There are rumours out there that after passage, the president did not sign it into law. However, the constitution envisioned this, and it said the House will have to use a certain approach which is the House using the two-thirds majority of members to approve it. So let us deal with the first hurdle and get it passed and then send it to the President and if he fails to assent, we will take a decision.”
The LGBTQ+ Bill has now allegedly been passed even though the public and electorate is being informed that the proponents of the bill and the Speaker have as yet to be presented with the final bill as compiled by the Parliamentary Draft Person for presentation to the President for his possible assent. Even before the Bill is forwarded by the Speaker of Parliament for the assent of the President proponents and the opposers of the Bill, with the President openly on the side of the opponents of the Bill, have stated where they stand on whether or not the Bill should be assented.
I am not surprised that while the Bill was purely a matter being passed through Parliament and the saying that “what happens in Parliament is a closed book and the courts will not interfere in the internal working of Parliament”, the Supreme Court has already been invited to the Bar of politics to decide on a Bill which has not left Parliament to the Presidency. The two major political parties in Ghana, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Government and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in opposition have so politicized the constitutional democracy of this country in such a manner that the only denominator for truth is who can lie his way into power at the next elections. The human political actors on both sides of the political divide, including the arms of government, are so fixated on power that they find it difficult to reach compromises necessary in every democracy for the substance of constitutional rule.
While the NDC wishes to form the next government using the outcome of the LGBTQ+ Bill as one of the crux of its political campaign strategy, the NPP understands the implications of the political game being played with the Private Members Bill largely championed by the NDC. I can bet that the debate about whether or not to assent to the LGBTQ+ Bill will prolong up to and after the 2024 elections without the Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill coming into force as an enactment.
Nana Akufo-Addo will not commit suicide in the few months remaining for his Presidency to end and his hope of handing over to his chosen surrogate. Nana Akufo-Addo has come a long way since the bad press attributed to the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the West Africa Commission on Drugs (WACD) of allegations against him for taking donation from a drug dealer brother-in-law whose seized assets he allegedly returned as the Attorney-General for his political survival. Nana Akufo-Addo reinvented himself. Attempts to use these allegations by his political opponents in the 2016 presidential election failed, and he became President of Ghana. He has since rehabilitated himself, placed his administration within the obit of the geopolitical West and has curried favours with them.
The problem with the endemically partisan and divided parasitic political elite and middle-class Ghanaian upon whom the sustenance of constitutionalism, democracy and the rule of law depends is its incremental development of emotional and ideological attachment to secular, religious and cultural ideologies which affects their bank of knowledge when assessing objective reality and phenomenon. The self-interest of the parasitic political elite, and the middle class has come to triumph over community, societal and national interest. Otherwise, the fact that Nana Akufo-Addo will not assent to any bill that offends the sensibilities of the friends he has cultivated in the geopolitical West has been lying in plain view since 7 January 2017.
Nana Akufo-Addo had to reinvent himself by ingratiation to those who previously considered him a beneficiary of drug trafficking and money laundering. Why does anybody think most of the policies of the Akufo-Addo government are western-centred? The profuse outward display of sorrow and mourning upon the death of Prince Philip, and the solicitation by the President to be invited to Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral when he went to sign the book of condolence at the British High Commission were intended for both Ghanaian and international consumption of fidelity to our colonial masters – the typical Comprador behaviour of the Gold Coast born Ghanaian. What of when Nana Akufo-Addo arranged on a private visit to the United Kingdom to meet the newly crowned King Charles III and had the encounter splashed in the Ghanaian media?
What does the political elite and middle class call the television broadcast of President Nana Akufo-Addo sitting before a US Secretary of State, not the President of the United States, and bringing the reputation of a neighbouring country, Burkina Faso, into disrepute by claiming without proof that: “Today, Russian mercenaries are on our northern border. Burkina Faso has now entered into an arrangement to go along with Mali in employing the Wagner forces there.”?
Ghanaian patriots and nationalists who seek the sovereignty of our country free from geopolitical interferences from the contending hegemons for world supremacy know that the northern border from Kulungugu/Widana to Hamile is being dotted with security barracks and encampments in the name of fighting terrorism and encroachment of undesirable elements from our northern neighbouring countries. Hopefully, these are not intended as the basis for other foreign security establishments to secure a permanent partnership with Ghana without Parliamentary approval in the geopolitical fight for world hegemony. In all these things, one cannot objectively overlook the intention of the opposite hegemons of using Africa as a springboard for geopolitical hegemony.
Where do we place the outspoken support Nana Akufo-Addo has displayed of partisanship in the Russian-Ukraine war or Special Military Operations depending on which side one supports; and the Israeli-Palestinian war of attrition? The fact that Ghana under the Nana Akufo-Addo regime has ceased to be nonaligned and become partisan in international politics just as it has divided the country cannot be doubted by anyone applying the methodology of conducting biographical research of Nana Akufo-Addo’s presidency using a qualitative philosophy and methods of research approach.
A digression! Whilst the NPP is thinking forward about how to carry its supporters along in finding a decent way to avoid committing itself to the LGBTQ+ Bill, the NDC is busy alienating some of its core revolutionary cadre supporters by mortgaging the legacy of its leader and founder, Jerry John Rawlings to the Ahwois and their cohorts who want to hijack the NDC from the Rawlings’ tradition and have imposed their surrogate, Naana Jane Opoku Agyeman as the running mate on their cocooned Presidential candidate without adequate consultation and consensus.
The perception by those who have gone along with the Ahwois and their cohort as the current owners of the NDC in the hope that they can mobilize cadres of the 31 December Revolution to change things in 2028 should the NDC manage to assume power in 2024 would regret their folly in acceding to this imposition intended to obliterate the image of Jerry John Rawlings from the history of the NDC in favour of the authors who wrote and endorsed falsehoods intended to betray President Rawlings in his lifetime and for posterity.
What the NDC needs now for its viability is an open and honest dialogue with the cadres of the 31 December Revolution, its former appointees including all former Members of Parliament, and the grassroots that sustained it since 1992 and not arrogant antagonism and covert claim to ownership of the NDC by the Ahwois and their cohorts.
Meanwhile, the NPP’s Attorney-General has smartly detailed in the Daily Graphic of 29 February 2024 how the country was saved tens of trillions of cedis arising out of the President’s SONA from the African Automobile Company Limited against the then Ministry of Employment and Manpower and the Attorney-General in judgment debt settlement originating from 2009. This brings to the fore again the issue of the Ministry of Local Government and African Automobile Limited’s Gallopers unconstitutional judgment debt settlement agreements in July 2011.
Ghanaians await the response of the current owners of the NDC who were in charge of entering into those transactions. My answer to the unconstitutional conduct in the settlement with the same African Automobile Company Limited on the Gallopers contract in July 2011 was clearly stated and reported by Modern Ghana and can be found on: There Is Massive Rot At A-G’s Office – Martin Amidu (modernghana.com).
I have from my experiential learning and knowledge of the Akufo-Addo regime written about his long game since he lost the 2008 presidential election and promised that never under his watch will he allow his successor from the NPP to lose an election. The developed countries of the world with all their sophisticated security and intelligence apparatus are daily accusing each other of interfering in the electoral processes of each other.
Only the blind cannot see that if these hegemons can interfere in the elections of each other for geopolitical reasons then elections in developing countries are easier to manipulate by either hegemon depending on the stranglehold they have over particular developing country regimes and the protection of turf.
Nana Akufo-Addo is too clever and cynical to alienate the powers he has painstakingly cultivated and sold Ghana to during his tenure in office on the polarizing politicized issue of assenting to the “Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill” to jeopardize his long game to break the eight.
Ghanaian Bismark Mireku is aiming to break the Guinness World Record for the longest marathon reading aloud, with a target of 14 days, equivalent to 336 hours.
As of now, he has already completed over 23 hours of continuous reading.
In a video that has gone viral, Bismark can be seen reading, although not at a steady pace, indicating signs of fatigue.
However, he remains determined to complete the challenge he has embarked upon.
Former President John Dramani Mahama has chosen to keep Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang as his running mate for the upcoming 2024 presidential election.
Reports from JoyNews, Asaase Radio and The Herald have cited reliable sources close to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer.
It was earlier reported by the NDC’s Communication Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, that the party’s flagbearer will be announcing his running mate today.
Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang was Mahama’s running mate for the 2020 general elections. Reports had it that Mahama was considering these three prominent party members; Julius Debrah, Naana Opoku-Agyemang, and Awuah-Darko for the running mate role.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) is abuzz with anticipation as the Council of Elders prepares to gather on Thursday, March 7, 2024, to deliberate on the running mate nominee presented by Presidential Candidate John Dramani Mahama.
According to the General Secretary of the party, Fifi Kwetey, the National Executive Committee will later gather at 2pm on the same day to further consider the nomination.
Mahama’s submission aligns with Section 45 of the party’s Constitution, which mandates the presentation of a nominee to the Council of Elders for consideration.
The venue and logistical details for these meetings, the party said, will be communicated directly to all participants in due course.
The party has indicated whoever is selected will undoubtedly complement the vision of John Dramani Mahama, as the party collectively strives to “Build the Ghana We Want together.”
London-based oil exploration company, Tullow Oil, has announced a loss after tax of $110 million for the fiscal year 2023 .
The loss, as revealed in the company’s full-year results released on March 6, 2024, is attributed to an impairment related to the Tweneboa, Enyenra, and Ntomme (TEN) development, where fields are experiencing a decline in productivity.
Despite the loss, Tullow Oil reported substantial revenue of $1.6 billion for 2023, compared to $1.7 billion in the previous year. This contrasts with the $49 million profit recorded in 2022.
The company’s Chief Executive Officer, Rahul Dhir, characterized 2023 as a year marked by significant achievements, including the initiation of the Jubilee South East project, which contributed to material production growth from the core operated field.
Mr. Dhir also highlighted the establishment of a new revenue stream through the sale of associated gas in Ghana and the growth of reserves in Gabon through license extensions.
Despite challenges such as lower oil prices, Tullow Oil generated free cash flow ahead of expectations and secured a $400 million debt facility agreement with Glencore, demonstrating its access to long-term capital.
Looking ahead, Dhir reaffirmed the company’s commitment to operational excellence, capital efficiency, and strategic investments to drive growth. He expressed confidence in Tullow’s ability to create substantial value for investors, host nations, and stakeholders.
Significant developments in Ghana include the Jubilee South East project’s production milestone in July 2023, which marked a notable increase in field production.
Gross oil production from the Jubilee field averaged 83.4 thousand barrels of oil per day (32.5 thousand barrels of oil per day net) in 2023.
Tullow Oil is set to commence five new Jubilee wells in 2024, comprising three producers and two water injectors, to further enhance production capabilities.
A private legal practitioner, Richard Dela Sky, has provided insight into his legal challenge against the recent enactment of the anti-LGBTQ+ bill by parliament.
On Tuesday, March 5, 2024, Sky’s legal team filed an application with the Supreme Court, seeking a declaration that the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, popularly known as the anti-gay bill, is null and void.
Mr Sky contends that the bill’s passage violates Article 33(5) of the 1992 Constitution, along with Articles 12(1) and (2), 15(1), 17(1) and (2), 18(2), and 21(1) (a) (b) (d) and (e). He asserts that the bill’s provisions “raise profound concerns regarding the potential infringement of the fundamental human rights and freedoms guaranteed to every Ghanaian by the Constitution.”
Mr Sky clarified that his legal action is not based on his personal views on LGBTQI+ individuals. Instead, it aims to uphold the Constitution and protect the fundamental human rights enshrined within it.
In a statement dated March 5, 2024, Richard Dela Sky said, “In my capacity as a citizen of the Republic of Ghana, deeply committed to the principles of democracy and the rule of law as enshrined in our revered 1992 Constitution, I have initiated legal action in the Supreme Court of Ghana. This action is not a declaration of my personal stance on LGBTQI+ individuals per se, but a conscientious effort to ensure the strict adherence to and protection of the constitutional framework that governs our society.”
He therefore called on Ghanaians to support this cause to uphold the integrity of the constitution.
“This emerging think tank is, among other things, dedicated to protecting and defending the Constitution of Ghana and the rights enshrined therein. We aim to foster a robust constitutional culture in Ghana, empowering every citizen to uphold and defend the principles that safeguard our collective freedoms and dignity.
I call upon all Ghanaians to view this legal action in the light of a patriotic endeavour to preserve the integrity of our Constitution and the democratic values we hold dear. It is a testament to our collective determination to ensure that Ghana remains a beacon of democracy and rule of law in Africa and around the world.”
Journalist and lawyer Richard Dela Sky has come under intense criticism after filing a suit in Ghana’s apex court against the anti-LGBTQ+ bill.
The bill, which seeks to criminalise homosexuality and LGBTQ+ activities in Ghana, has been passed by Parliament but has not yet been signed by President Nana Akufo-Addo, who has said he will wait for the Supreme Court to rule on its constitutionality.
Several citizens, including Sam George, one of the proponents of the bill, have cricitized Mr Sky over his move. Presently, Deputy National Organiser of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Elikem Eric Kevin Kwame Kotoko, appears to be the latest individual who has condemned Richard Dela Sky.
Dear @RichardDelaSky, I have seen and read your writ. A lot of fluff, but the substance is your prayer to the Supreme Court to stop @NAkufoAddo from assenting to the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, 2024.
— Sam 'Dzata' George 🦁🇬🇭 (@samgeorgegh) March 5, 2024
Elikem Kotoko, who is a vocal supporter of the bill, has, in a cryptic message, slammed Richard Sky for lacking the moral grounds to undertake such an initiative by making some shocking revelations about Richard Sky’s family background, alleging that his father was a rapist and a paedophile who had committed incest with his own daughter and another minor.
Without explicitly mentioning Sky’s name, Elikem posted on Facebook and X, details of one Mr Moon, who he claimed was being used to “mount a challenge to this bill.”
He then hinted at Richard Sky’s identity by breaking his name into two syllables and forming a sentence with each part.
“He wasn’t Rich and he was never Ard either, growing up. He lacked that proper upbringing to appreciate what a home was or is and the true definition of family. Don’t be surprised, he has accepted to be used by his paymasters to mount this challenge,” he noted.
Elikem asserted that this may be because Mr. Moon “lacked the parental care from home as a child,” due to his father’s alleged crimes.
“His father slept with his own biological daughter (incest) and later with another minor (rape or paedophilia), so he was sent to gaol for that conduct but now he is back to resettle within society after serving his sentence. Certainly, his conduct and absence created a vacuum in the life of Moon. His dad was a rapist, a paedophile and rather than uphold some values to depart from the father, no, ‘the crap doesn’t give birth to’,” he wrote.
He also claimed that Mr Moon had changed his surname from “Ku***nu” to “Skies” to escape the stigma of his father’s crimes.
“Little Moon was a little boy then though but as he grew, to escape the stigma he refused to use his family surname, Ku***nu, instead resorted to the Skies for a name which he willingly imposed on himself,” he added.
In an earlier post, the NDC Executive accused the journalist of being a protégé of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and of colluding with the president to delay the enactment of the bill.
He posted a copy of the Supreme Court writ initiated by Richard Sky on his Facebook page and expressed his disappointment in the journalist’s action. He also pointed out that the president had mentioned a lawsuit challenging the bill on March 4, 2024, a day before Richard Sky filed his suit.
“The statement by the president was false, there was no writ filed as of yesterday. It was until today that Richard Dela Sky, who is considered a known protégé of the governing NPP, filed a writ at the Supreme Court today. This means that before Richard Sky filed his writ, it was probably agreed between him and the governing NPP. President Akufo-Addo and the NPP are sponsoring a challenge to the anti-LGBTQ+ bill, period. Such a shame!” he wrote.
Elikem Kotoko’s allegations have sparked a lot of reactions on social media, with some people supporting him and others criticising him for his personal attacks on Richard Sky. Richard Sky has not yet responded to Elikem Kotoko’s claims or confirmed or denied his involvement in the lawsuit against the bill.
On the issue of the lawsuit, Mr Sky has clarified that his legal action is not a reflection of his personal views on LGBTQI+ individuals.
He asserts that it is an endeavour to ensure strict adherence to the Constitution and safeguard the fundamental human rights enshrined within it.
According to the Bank of Ghana’s January 2024 Banking Sector Development Report, the composition of banks’ investments, including bills, securities, and equity, as a share of total assets increased to 36.4% in 2023 from 32.0% in 2022.
Cash and bank balances were the second-largest component of total assets, with their share improving from 29.1% to 30.7% over the same period.
However, the proportion of net advances in total assets declined to 23.8% from 28.2%, while the share of non-earning assets reduced from 10.6% to 9.1%. The Central Bank noted that the banking industry’s balance sheet in December 2023 reflected a preference for less risky assets.
On the liability side, the share of deposits in banks’ liabilities and shareholders’ funds increased to 78.0% in December 2023, from 75.5% in the prior year. The decline in borrowings translated into a decreased share of 5.5% in December 2023, compared to 8.9% a year earlier.
Following the strong growth in profits after tax, the proportion of shareholders’ funds in banks’ total funding improved to 10.6% from 8.7%. The share of other liabilities, however, declined from 7.0% in December 2022 to 5.9% in December 2023.
Interest income remained the largest component of banks’ income streams in December 2023, accounting for 76.8% of banks’ income compared to 75.7% in December 2022. The share of banks’ income from fees and commissions declined to 10.8% from 11.3% in 2022, while the proportion of other income in total income was lower at 12.4% in December 2023 compared to 13.0% in December 2022.
Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has called on the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) to swiftly publish the findings of its investigations into the National Cathedral project.
Mr Ablakwa’s request comes amidst growing concerns over the handling of the project, particularly regarding transparency and accountability in its execution.
Mr. Ablakwa in January 2023 petitioned CHRAJ under Article 218 of the 1992 Constitution to investigate an alleged transfer of GH¢2.6million cash from the National Cathedral Secretariat to JNS Talent Centre Limited, a company he said belongs to Rev. Kusi Boateng.
He also alleged a conflict of interest and possession of multiple identities by Rev. Kusi Boateng.
CHRAJ, in a letter signed by the Director of Anti-Corruption, Stephen Azantilow, acknowledged receipt of the petition on Wednesday, January 18.
“I am directed to acknowledge receipt of your complaint on the above subject matter lodged with the Commission on the 16th of January 2023 and to inform you that it is receiving attention,” the statement read.
It has been over a year and the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) is yet to make public its findings on the subject matter.
Presently, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has called on President Akufo-Addo to immediately dissolve the Board of Trustees for the National Cathedral project.
The current members on the Board include prominent religious figures such as Apostle Prof. Opoku Onyinah, former Chairman of the Church of Pentecost, and Most Rev. Charles Palmer Buckle, Metropolitan Archbishop of Accra.
The MP also wants the National Cathedral Secretariat to be immediately closed after receiving GHS225,962,500.
He wants “the Board of Trustees and the National Cathedral Secretariat account for all private donations so far received, particularly their infamous US operations.”
“All those responsible for this gross financial loss to the state must be prosecuted with immediate effect,” he added.
This comes after a confrontation between MPs and officials of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) with Ghana Armed Forces personnel while attempting to access the National Cathedral site on March 6, 2024 over delay in its completion.
The National Cathedral, a $100-million inter-denominational project, was scheduled for completion before the commissioning date, March 6, as stated by then-Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta during the 2021 mid-year budget review in Parliament.
However, a heavy security presence surrounded the cathedral on Wednesday, leading to a clash with MPs near the new Electoral Commission head office. Both the Ghana Police Service and the military had set up barricades, restricting access to the cathedral site.
Nonetheless, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa symbolically “commissioned” the uncompleted National Cathedral project, highlighting what he perceived as the government’s failure to finish the project.
Following the ceremony, he presented a number of requests to the President with regards to the stalled project.
Mr Ablakwa wants an explanation from President Akufo-Addo on why he failed to fulfill his promise to God, to Parliament and to the sovereign Ghanaian people — the promise to commission his US$450million (GHS5.7billion) “priority of priorities” cathedral.
He is demanding full accountability on what happened to the US$58,141,509.52 (GHS740million) and “why all we see here is the world’s most expensive pit and why the contractors, RIBADE JV abandoned the project for lack of payment 2 years ago.”
The others are as follows; A comprehensive report on how much it has cost the state to so far replace and compensate some owners of demolished properties, and how much is still outstanding considering that aggrieved demolished property owners such as Waterstone Realty have resorted to the courts. We note that the following properties were recklessly demolished on the orders of President Akufo-Addo: Bungalows for Judges, Judicial Training Institute, Passport Head Office, Scholarship Secretariat, Bungalows for CHRAJ, Waterstone Realty Luxury Apartment Complex, Headquarters of Comsys IT Firm and the Malian Ambassador’s Residence.
Contract must be immediately terminated to avoid further financial loss to the state. According to the contract, Ghana will have to pay Extension of Time Claims, Standing Time Claims, Abortive & Re-Works Cost due to Main Contractor Suspension.
Retrievals from the following persons: David Adjaye — US$19.6million (GHS250million) Cary Summers — US$6million (GHS76million) Rev. Victor Kusi Boateng/Kwabena Adu Gyamfi — GHS2.6million.
Publication of the Deloitte audit which was promised on 24th January, 2023 — more than a year ago.
Mr Ablakwa has entreated the NPP Caucus in Parliament to desist from sabotaging the impending Parliamentary Probe after a unanimous parliamentary resolution.
“The NPP’s unpatriotic conduct by deliberately delaying the submission of names of their members to the Rt. Hon. Speaker for the committee to commence work is most condemnable,” he added.
Mr Ablakwa has again made a clarion call for a national debate leading to a possible national consensus on what should happen to the “world’s most expensive pit moving forward.”
“Some have suggested a specialist children’s hospital which Ghana currently lacks, we also note that recently the Secretary-General of the TUC, Dr Anthony Yaw Baah suggested the place be converted to a hospital,” he added.
Despite provocative, undemocratic and needless attempts by soldiers and police who were instructed to stop us, we courageously defied the orders of their superiors and had a very successful media engagement earlier today.
