  • Jailing someone because of his sexuality is not the answer to maintaining family values – Afenyo-Markin

Jailing someone because of his sexuality is not the answer to maintaining family values – Afenyo-Markin

Deputy Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has prevented the third reading of the anti-LGBTQ bill, indicating that individuals cannot just be jailed for their sexuality in the country’s bid to maintain its family values.

Had it not been for his intervention, today would have marked the passage of this controversial legislation.

Mr. Afenyo-Markin clarified that while he supports the principles of the Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values bill, he has chosen to block its progression at this time as the custodial sentence is not the right channel to protect proper human sexual rights.

“The essence of this motion is to afford this august house the opportunity to thoroughly consider amendments that are proposed in the bill with the view of substituting community service for incarceration,” he said.

According to him, the bill’s punitive actions would not aid in rehabilitating the culprits but rather worsen the current situation.

“The issue before us is behavioral, and it is my humble view that in dealing with behavioural matters, incarceration is not the solution. It makes the matter worse.”

“To jail a person for his/her sexuality will not be the solution in maintaining our Ghanaian family values and ensuring proper human sexual rights,” he added.

Meanwhile, a sponsor of the bill, Sam George, indicated that Mr. Markin’s argument does not hold water.

  • I will address the basic things affecting Ghanaians in the health sector – Okoe Boye

I will address the basic things affecting Ghanaians in the health sector – Okoe Boye

Health Minister-designate, Dr. Bernard Okoe Boye, has expressed his commitment to continuing projects initiated by his predecessor, Kwaku Agyeman Manu.

Despite having his own priorities, Dr. Okoe Boye sees this approach as crucial for ensuring a smooth transition, especially considering the limited time left for the Akufo-Addo administration.

Following President Akufo-Addo’s reshuffle on February 14, 2024, Dr. Okoe Boye was nominated to replace Kwaku Agyeman Manu. Pending approval by Parliament’s vetting committee, Dr. Okoe Boye, who previously served as Deputy Health Minister from 2020 to 2021, is poised to return to the health sector.

Despite public dissatisfaction with the reshuffle, Dr. Okoe Boye, in an interview with Bernard Avle on the Citi Breakfast Show, emphasized his intention to build on the positive initiatives of his predecessor.

He stated, “But sometimes it is not the programmes you introduce into a sector that makes people happy or improve the state of mind, it is the relationship and addressing basic things which do not require resources necessarily but require attention and offering protocols and this is going to be my major priority.”

Acknowledging that meaningful changes often require addressing fundamental issues and building relationships, Dr. Okoe Boye emphasized the importance of engaging stakeholders in the health sector.

Despite not yet receiving Parliament’s approval, he revealed that he had already initiated discussions with key players, including those at Korle Bu and the Ghana Medical Association.

“When I went to Korle Bu, what I did was that I sat with those who have been there for a long time and most of them have a fair idea what the problems are, what it ought to be done and what to put in. As I speak to you, I’ve spoken to the Ghana Medical Association President and some of the Executives.

“I’ve not gone for the vetting but informally, I’m like guys, let’s sit down, what do you want, where do we get to? What must be done? The first approach is to talk to the people in the field.”

Addressing concerns about the limited timeframe, Dr. Okoe Boye acknowledged the challenge of implementing significant infrastructure changes in a short period. However, he pledged to focus on streamlining processes, ensuring adequate funding, and leveraging his experience to elevate the health sector during his tenure.

Mohammed Amin can’t work without getting approval from Ofori-Atta – Isaac Adongo

The Member of Parliament for Bolgatanga Central, Isaac Adongo, has described President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s removal of Ken Ofori-Atta as Finance Minister as mere ‘window dressing.’

Mr Adongo explained that ‘window dressing’ refers to making something appear deceptively attractive or favorable.

President Akufo-Addo removed Ken Ofori-Atta in a major ministerial reshuffle on Wednesday, February 14, which affected a total of 13 current ministers of state, including 10 cabinet ministers and two regional ministers. Mohammed Amin Adam has been appointed as the new Finance Minister, while Ken Ofori-Atta has been made the Presidential Advisor on the economy.

In an interview on Eyewitness News on Citi FM, Mr Adongo expressed doubt about the effectiveness of the reshuffle, suggesting that Mohammed Amin Adam might have limited influence as long as Ken Ofori-Atta remains involved and influential in economic matters.

“This is clearly window dressing. If you follow events and watch critically what has happened, I do not doubt the competence and the abilities of Dr. Mohammed Amin. He was my former colleague on the Finance Committee, my senior at school. I have a very good respect for him, except to say that they have given him the job in one hand and taken it with the right.”

“Because now he is the Minister and they have appointed the very person they are removing as the Senior Presidential Advisor on the Economy what that simply means is that for Mohammed Amin to get any policy through in cabinet or through executive approval of the president, the president has to go and consult Ken Ofori Atta. And so technically it means that Mohammed Amin cannot do anything if Ofori-Atta is not in agreement because he would advise the president against it,” he stated.

#SaveGhanaFootball demo useless, GFA should be dissolved – Nana Aba Anamoah

Ghanaian media personality, Nana Aba Anamoah, has voiced her dissatisfaction and frustration with the current state of football in Ghana.

During a live studio discussion on 3Music TV, Nana Aba criticized the recent “Save Ghana Football” protest by some football enthusiasts, describing it as futile.

She suggested that the only solution to the issues plaguing Ghanaian football is to dissolve the GFA and face a ban from FIFA, the world football governing body.

“Yesterday, I saw that protest, the ‘save Ghana football’. It’s not going to do anything. What we should do is dissolve that FA, get a ban from FIFA, and put our house in order. And putting a house in order doesn’t mean putting friends and cronies there. It means to put people with sense there to work,” she said.

She also expressed that she is not afraid of any politician or football official in the country. She emphasized that she expected better leadership from Kurt Okraku, the President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), and Henry Asante Twum, the Head of Communications of the GFA.

“I used to work with Kurt when he was doing the FA Cup. I used to host it for him. And I expected better from Kurt Okraku, but Kurt has not done better. I expected Henry Asante Twum to do better. He hasn’t done better,” she said.

The broadcaster further remarked that Ghanaian football was ‘dead’ and that the Ghana Premier League was on the brink of collapse.

“Our football is dead! Have you followed the local league? Forget about the Black Stars, because they don’t matter. The real problem is our local league. It is dead!” she said.

She also accused the GFA and the Ministry of Youth and Sports of corruption, questioning how the GFA could budget $8.5 million for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, which had a winning prize of $7 million.

“The FA and the sports ministry are in bed, they are having wild sex. That’s what is happening. And we are paying for the room on the hour. I don’t know if they are using condoms. We are paying for everything. Our football is dead!

“How do you budget $8.5 million for a tournament with a winning prize of $7 million? How does that make sense? Our football is dead. It is completely dead,” she claimed.

2 arrested, shops closed down at Agbogbloshie market over Clean Ghana Campaign

The Clean Ghana campaign has taken action at the Agbogbloshie market in Accra, making two arrests and shutting down several shops due to unsanitary conditions.

The campaign’s task force specifically targeted corn milling operations to ensure they were following regulations.

The team found that a significant number of people were not complying with the regulations, leading to the closure of many shops. This action highlights the campaign’s commitment to improving sanitation and hygiene standards in Ghana.

“Last year, we were here, we took some action so we are coming to see whether the people have complied. But unfortunately, when we came, it was just a handful that complied. We were compelled to lock four shops, arrested two people and served seven notices.”

An Environmental Health Officer at the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, Florence Kuukyi, stated that those arrested during the inspection would be processed for court.

She mentioned that the individuals arrested had previously been warned by the court but had failed to comply with the directives.

“After the closure and arrest, we will process them for court. We are now going to apply for a summon because it is late and we can’t take them to court now.”

“Those that we arrested, they are not the owners of the property. So we have arrested them to get the owners of the property. As we have locked it, the real owners will come. So when the real owners come, we will get them and process them for court,” she said.

Sosu goes global with death penalty repeal; charges US to abolish law

Francis-Xavier Sosu, Member of Parliament for Madina Constituency in Ghana, has taken his advocacy against the death penalty to the global stage.

Speaking at the 2024 visiting scholar program at Center College in Danville, Kentucky, and at the University of South in Sewanee, Tennessee, USA, Sosu charged the United States to abolish its death penalty laws.

As a visiting professor, Sosu addressed convocations on the theme “Championing a Free, Fair, and Just Society through Human Rights Advocacy: Chronicles of a Lawyer, Legislator, and Activist.”

He highlighted the recent abolition of the death penalty in Ghana, replacing it with life imprisonment for ordinary crimes, despite being a signatory to international human rights treaties.

“Distinguished ladies and gentlemen, in my journey of activism, I have over the years spoken up against various ills in society, and championed the rights of many persons in Ghana. I have confronted and kicked against treatments meted out as a result of one’s vulnerability, social status, economic or financial incapacity, and cultural practices, among others.

“For instance, I have spoken up against injustices and corrupt practices in our Judiciary; against the continued retainment of the death penalty in our statute books and imposition of same by Courts in Ghana; advocated strongly for the removal of taxes on menstrual hygiene products; participated in demonstrations and advocated for increased access to legal education in Ghana; among others,” he said.

In the United States, the death penalty can only be imposed on defendants convicted of capital offenses, such as murder, treason, genocide, or the killing or kidnapping of a Congressman, the President, or a Supreme Court justice. Despite many states halting its use, the federal government may still implement it.

In Ghana, the death penalty was imposed for murder, attempt to commit murder, genocide, or piracy and smuggling of gold or diamond. However, Ghana’s Parliament passed the Criminal Offences Amendment Act 2022, replacing the death penalty with life imprisonment.

On January 24, 2024, the High Court sentenced six of the coup plotters to death by hanging. The Court, however, acquitted Assistant Commissioner of Police Benjamin Agordzo, Colonel Samuel Kodzo Gameli, and one other junior military officer, Corporal Seidu Abubakar.

Mr Sosu expressed dissatisfaction with the death sentences handed to six coup plotters in Ghana and announced plans to escalate the issue to the ECOWAS Court of Justice.

He described the verdict as ‘disheartening’ and emphasized the need for Ghana to review its laws.

Member of Parliament for Madina Constituency, Francis-Xavier Sosu, spoke at the 2024 visiting scholar program at Center College, Danville, Kentucky, and at the University of South, Sewanee, Tennessee, in the United States of America.

As a visiting professor, he had the privilege to speak at convocations on the theme: Championing a Free Fair and Just Society through Human Rights Advocacy: Chronicles of a Lawyer, Legislator and Activist.

He discussed the intersection between law, lawmaking, law enforcement and activism as guides of social advancement and how his background as a street child, adopted into an orphanage and becoming a lawyer inspired his human rights practice and how he translated human rights activism into legislative intervention.

The legislator took time to discuss the 17 private member bills he has initiated, some by himself alone and others with colleagues. The lecture also discussed the three Bills passed and the one that has presidential assent to abolish the death penalty under the Criminal Offenses Act.

“I spent many years as a street child before finding refuge at the Village of Hope Orphanage, which was a project of Churches of Christ in Ghana.  My educational journey led me to graduate from the University of Ghana and the Ghana School of Law, eventually becoming a member of the Ghana Bar in 2010. Before embarking on my legal career, I was deeply involved in student activism, advocating for change in various aspects of leadership in Ghana for over two decades. Currently, I serve as a legislator, human rights lawyer, activist, author, the 2nd Vice President of the United Nations Association of Ghana, and play key roles in my fight,” he said.

Below is the full speech delivered by Francis-Xavier Sosu.

Member of Parliament for Madina Constituency, Francis-Xavier Sosu at 2024 visiting scholar program

He also delivered lectures in several classes on the topic “The nexus between Servant Leadership, Good Governance, and Development.”

Mr Francis-Xavier emphasised that servant leadership is the best model to guarantee good governance principles because it assures and ensures “accountability, openness, and independence of state institutions” thereby “propelling inclusive development where everyone, regardless of their backgrounds, can fully achieve their individual potential.”

Sharing his views on the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) framework, the Madina MP asserted that in order for informal economies to be successfully incorporated, governments need to ensure transparency, fairness, and adherence to the rule of law in their policies and practices.

This presentation was inspired by his doctoral thesis in the area of international economic law, with an emphasis on regional integration laws.

He poked about the need for Africa to take a step back to harmonize its regional integration efforts as an aid to the AfCFTA Agreement to achieve economic integration and discussed the new conceptual framework for integration in Africa that he has developed.

“Under this conceptual framework, the regional economic communities recognized by the AU must be harmonized under the AFCFTA, and the AFCFTA must have a supranational status. Informal economies must be incorporated under the AfCFTA and there must be political accountability and commitment to ensure this model succeeds for Africa to integrate economically,” he said.

Mr Sosu warned Africa against potential economic globalization by China and the urgent need for African leaders to embrace this new AFCFTA conceptual model to accelerate Africa’s economic integration and transformation.

The Madina legislator ended the day by spending time with students and faculty members to interact and discuss Ghana as the leading democracy in Africa. This gave him the opportunity to sell Ghana to most students who have signed up to study abroad in Ghana this fall and in the fall of 2025.

He also had opportunities to discuss the possibilities for Ghanaian students, particularly those from the Madina Constituency, to take advantage of the exchange programs to study at the two colleges.

Servant leadership is the best model to guarantee good governance – Francis-Xavier

Member of Parliament for Madina Constituency, Francis-Xavier Sosu, is of the firm belief that servant leadership is the most effective model for ensuring good governance.

Servant leadership is a leadership philosophy in which the leader’s primary goal is to serve others, rather than accrue power or status for themselves.

He made his surmise while speaking at the 2024 visiting scholar program at Center College, Danville, Kentucky, and at the University of South, Sewanee, Tennessee, in the United States of America.

McDan, Jospong, Nick Danso, other top CEOs NDC govt may prosecute

Under an NDC government, certain CEOs, six in number, could potentially face prosecution for engaging in some transactions that are alleged to be unlawful.

If found guilty, they could be prosecuted according to the law. These personalities are business mogul Daniel McKorley, known well as McDan, the founder and CEO of Jospong Group, Joseph Siaw Agyepong, Kwaku Bediako; Group Executive Chairman of the CH Group of Companies, Nick Danso; Executive Chairman of Ghana Link Network Services Limited, Joseph Boahen Aidoo; Chief Executive of COCOBOD, and Dr Ernest Addison, the Bank of Ghana Governor.

    Jospong – Sanitation contracts

In order to deal with filth in the country, the Akufo-Addo administration imposed 10 pesewas tax on each litre of fuel as a Sanitation and Pollution Levy. The levy came into effect in 2021, and the government made over GH¢264 million as revenue from it.

A right to information (RTI) request filed by The Fourth Estate to the Ministry of Finance on the disbursements of funds collected from this levy revealed that the ministry disbursed GH¢156 million out of the amount to only one company.

All the money disbursed went to only one company, Sewerage Systems GH. Ltd, a subsidiary of the Jospong Group.

The Auditor-General, in its 2020 report, had directed Sewerage Systems GH. Ltd (SSGL) to refund GH¢95 million, which the company had received from the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF) to the state.

It is not clear whether the government took any steps to recover the illegal payments to the company.

McDan – Terminal 2 takeover, Trade fair

In February 2022, information emerged about the operations of McDan Aviation at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) with revelations that, although the company does not have a certificate to operate as a private jet hiring service, the company has been doing so on the blindside of the Ghanaian authorities.

Management of Ghana Airport Company (GACL) shut down the newly launched private jet terminal belonging to McDan Aviation Company following the refusal of the company to halt the inauguration of the terminal as directed by MD of Ghana Airport Company Yaw Kwakwa over security and safety breaches.

According to The Herald, there have been fears by the government that the private jet company could become a sources of Money laundering, narcotic drugs smuggling, as well as the activities of terrorists.

Also, in 2020, the Board of the Ghana Trade Fair Company Limited headed by Daniel McKorley (McDan), demolished office structures of businesses at the Trade Fair.

The demolitions had happened in spite of the fact that businesses at the Trade Fair at the time had a case in court against the GTFCL.

Mr Raymond Archer, whose company, Universal Labels and Packaging Co. Ltd (UNIPACK) was also affected, said at the time of the 2020 demolitions that he had sunk some US$10million into the business before the demolition.

Two years down the line, the Trade Fair remains a pile of debris with several hundreds of Ghanaians who used to be employed there now out of work.

Kwaku Bediako – New BoG headquarters contractor

Kwaku Bediako is the Founder and Group Executive Chairman of the CH Group of Companies, located in Accra Ghana. He is a multi-millionaire and senior biological brother of the leader of the New Force, Nana Kwame Bediako alias Cheddar, or Fredom Jacob Caesar.

One of these companies, Goldkey Properties, a real estate company, won the contract to construct the controversial $250 million Bank of Ghana new headquarters.

After the evaluation of tenders was received, the Entity Tender Committee (ETC) of the Bank at its meeting held on 6th August 2020 considered Tender Evaluation Panel’s recommendation and approved the award of contract for the project to Messrs Goldkey Properties Limited at the cost of $121,078,517.94, the least cost evaluated bid, under Turnkey (Design and Build) contract arrangements.

On the matter, NDC member and Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, alleged that a construction firm, selected through a single-source Public Procurement Authority (PPA) process for the project, is not even a registered entity within the country.

    “From the intercepted documents, the BoG handpicked the following companies: i) Messrs. WBHO Ghana Limited, ii) Messrs. Man Enterprise, iii) Messrs. DeSimone Limited, iv) Messrs. Ronesans Holdings and v) Messrs. Goldkey Properties;

    “It is not clear what criteria the BoG used in selecting its preferred 5 companies when Ghana’s built environment can boast of many established and celebrated construction firms such as Consar, Berock, Maripoma, Mawums, M. Barbisotti, First Sky, Antartic, Ussuya, Regimanuel, and so on and so forth;

“None of the BoG’s shortlisted companies can lay claim to any patent or exclusive capacity which other construction firms in that category do not possess and therefore warranting or justifying the use of restricted tendering;” he wrote.

Nick Danso – UNIPASS contract at ports

In 2018, sources in government revealed that Nick Danso, a renowned Ghanaian industrialist and Executive Chairman of Ghana Link Network Services Limited, and the Ministry of Trade did not follow the right procurement process to sign the 10-year UNIPASS contract which has infuriated the President.

Currently, the paper has it that the deal has hit a dead end after an investigation was conducted into the process that led to the signing of the contract.

According to the sources, only few government officials from the Ministry of Trade (names withheld for now) sat down to pen the 10-year sole-sourced deal without recourse to due process.

Those government officials signed the whole deal with Nick Danso on behalf of UNIPASS ignoring the Ministry of Finance, Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), Customs Division and other relevant stakeholders.

Again, the sources said there was no need for the deal when GCNet and West Blue consulting, a Customs World company are already operating the single window in Ghana, hence the cancelation of the whole contract.

But it was reported that Some top officials in President Nana Addo’s NPP government have helped Nick Danso rewrite the whole UNIPASS contract again for tender.

In 2020, MESSRS GHANA Link Network Services Limited indicated its readiness to launch UNIPASSa total customs administration solution for Ghana, in February of that year.

Joseph Boahen Aidoo – COCOBOD loans

In September 2020, the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) signed an agreement for a US$1.3 billion syndicated loan facility for the 2020/2021 cocoa crop season.

The facility, which is the largest soft commodity deal in sub-Saharan Africa, will be used to finance cocoa purchases and related operational activities in the crop season.

The signing ceremony which took place on Tuesday, 29th September at the Marriot Hotel in Accra, was attended in-person by officials from COCOBOD, the government and representatives of the local financial institutions who participated in this year’s syndication.

Officials from the foreign banks, including the lead arrangers, attended the ceremony via video conferencing.

CEO of COCOBOD, Joseph Boahen Aidoo

Speaking at the ceremony, the Chief Executive of COCOBOD, Joseph Bindustry, doo expressed his gratitude to the banks for their trust in Ghana’s cocoa industry for which reason they are willing to fund the operations of the industry.

But Member of Parliament for Juaboso, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, asserted that COCOBOD failed to give a tangible explanation about the whereabouts of the fund, which was to be used to purchase about 900,000 tonnes of cocoa beans in the 2020/2021 crop season.

But the Board, in a statement, clarified that it has “met all its statutory requirements and agreements with its financial partners in accounting for the syndicated loan for the crop season which closed in September 2021”.

Ernest Addison – Printing of money illegal, GHC60bn loss, new head office

In August last year, the main opposition party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), accused the Bank of Ghana of engaging in illegal money printing, which they claim has led to the depletion of the country’s external reserves.

This alleged misconduct is said to have contributed to the significant depreciation of the Ghanaian Cedi and hyperinflation during 2022.

At a press conference led by Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, the NDC’s parliamentary leader, the party accused the Central Bank’s governor, Dr. Ernest Addison, of violating both Section 30 (7) of the Bank of Ghana Act, 2012 (Act 612) and Section 60 of the Bank of Ghana Amendment Act, 2016 (Act 918).

According to the NDC, the hyperinflation experienced in 2022 led to an estimated 850,000 individuals falling below the poverty line. The party believes that this economic turmoil could potentially result in more members of the ruling Akufo-Addo government accumulating significant amounts of money privately for the purpose of influencing electoral outcomes, both in party primaries and the general elections scheduled for December 2024.

    BoG Governor, Dr. Ernest Addison

Also, in the 2022 financial year, the Central Bank reported losses amounting to GHC60.81 billion, in contrast to a profit of GHC1.23 billion recorded in 2021.

These losses were primarily due to the government’s domestic debt restructuring efforts and the depreciation of the cedi, among other factors.

Member of Parliament for Builsa South, Dr. Clement Apaak has stated that the Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr. Ernest Addison will have to account to the people of Ghana.

According to him, there are inconsistencies with the figures the Governor keeps throwing at Ghanaians.

“You criminally make losses of GH60 billion, and expect us to accept the idiotic excuse that BOG was not set up to make profit? Was BOG set up to make losses? Chief State Attorney disbarred by GLC for accepting GHC400,000 ‘bribe’ from Woyome

A Chief State Attorney at the Office of the Attorney-General, Samuel Nerquaye-Tetteh, has been disbarred as a lawyer by the General Legal Council (GLC) for collecting GH¢400,000 from businessman Alfred Agbesi Woyome in 2011.

Mr. Nerquaye-Tetteh has been disbarred, meaning he can no longer practice as a lawyer in Ghana. The Disciplinary Committee of the GLC, the regulatory body of the legal profession, found him guilty of professional misconduct under Rule 2(2) of the Legal Profession (Professional Conduct and Etiquette) Rules, 1969 (L.I. 613).

In a notice dated January 31, 2024, the GLC stated that while defending the state against a suit by Woyome in 2011, Mr. Nerquaye-Tetteh personally caused the direct transfer of an amount of GH¢400,000 from Mr. Woyome to the bank account of his wife.

The GLC further stated that Mr. Nerquaye-Tetteh could not offer any reasonable explanation for the said transfer of the GH¢400,000 into his wife’s bank account from Mr. Woyome.

According to the GLC, the conduct of Mr Nerquaye-Tetteh had adversely affected “the “dignity and high standing of the legal profession.”

“That, he, as a lawyer and a Chief State Attorney, having acted as counsel for the State in the case, Alfred Agbesi Woyome vrs. Attorney General & Anor had an amount of Four Hundred Thousand Ghana Cedis (GH¢400,000.00) transferred directly from Mr Alfred Woyome into the bank account of his wife, Mrs. Gifty Nerquaye-Tetteh without any reasonable explanation; a conduct or act that adversely affects the dignity and high standing of the legal profession.”

“SAMUEL NERQUAYE-TETTEH shall not hold himself out as a lawyer or attend chambers or render or purport to render any professional legal services to the public. The practicing licence of Samuel Nerquaye-Tetteh is hereby withdrawn forthwith,” the notice said.

The notice was signed by the Judicial Secretary, Justice Cynthia Pamela Koranteng.

Defreeze our salaries by Friday or blame yourself for what comes next – NAGRAT warns Special Prosecutor

The National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) has issued a two-day ultimatum to the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) to release the salaries of some teachers by Friday or face their wrath.

The Association claimed that the OSP had withheld the salaries of over 400 teachers.

The OSP stated that they are investigating ghost names on the government’s payroll, which is their justification for withholding the salaries.

However, NAGRAT President Angel Karbonu argued that this is not sufficient justification for withholding their salaries.

“When you’re auditing somebody, until the audit is completed and you have conclusively arrived indicating that A, B and C are not qualified to earn a salary, you don’t go ahead to inflict purgery.”

Speaking on NewsNite on Wednesday, NAGRAT President Angel Karbonu warned that the association would be forced to resort to other measures if the Office of the Special Prosecutor fails to release the withheld salaries by Friday, February 16, 2024.

“He [Special Prosecutor] has not finished prosecuting people who have been given bribes in elections and things like that, it is not poor teachers that he is coming to zero in on,” he said.

“If he does not defreeze the salaries by Friday, he will have to be blamed for whatever happens after Friday.”

  • We will only give you lithium if you provide us factories – Mfantseman chiefs to Atlantic Lithium Ltd

We will only give you lithium if you provide us factories – Mfantseman chiefs to Atlantic Lithium Ltd

The chiefs of Mfantseman are advocating for the construction of factories as part of the agreement for the Ewoyaa Lithium mining project.

They believe that this would help create employment opportunities for the youth in the area.

They emphasized that the environmental impacts of mining are significant, and there should be corresponding compensation in the form of job opportunities to improve the living standards of the affected communities.

Osagyefo Amanfo Edu VI, the Omanhen of the Mankessim Traditional Area, highlighted that constructing factories would ensure that the people in the catchment area benefit from the mining project’s socio-economic advantages for their development.

These sentiments were expressed during a meeting organized by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

The meeting aimed to allow Atlantic Lithium to engage with the communities regarding its documented findings as part of the environmental process required to secure an operational permit.

It also sought to gather views, feedback, and recommendations from the catchment communities regarding the proposed project by Barari DV Ghana Limited, with the goal of consensus-building.

“Chiefs here will ensure the gold mining woes do not affect Ewoyaa Lithium mining,” he assured, and pledged their commitment to supporting the project for the benefits of the people and generation unborn.

Mr. Ransford Sekyi, the Deputy Director of Operations at the EPA, emphasized the importance of collective efforts by the government and all stakeholders to safeguard the environment. He urged the communities to act as watchdogs to ensure that the mining company adheres to environmental regulations and rules, emphasizing that this is crucial for their own safety.

“Lithium is a natural resource, which could turn the fortunes of any country, thus the people need to harness the opportunities that comes with the project for national development,” he said.

Mr. Sekyi assured that the Government, working through the EPA, would ensure strict adherence to all environmental protocols before issuing permits for operations. During a briefing attended by traditional leaders, government officials, security agencies, the media, and community members, the contents of the document were discussed, and areas needing clarification were addressed.

Disagreements arose in areas such as compensation, resettlement, and the mitigation of negative impacts of mining activities. The company assured that these concerns would be thoroughly addressed.

  • Focus on completing ongoing projects – James Avedzi to Ministers-designate

Focus on completing ongoing projects – James Avedzi to Ministers-designate

Ketu North Member of Parliament (MP), James Klutse Avedzi, has advised newly nominated ministers to prioritize completing ongoing projects over starting new ones once they resume work.

He emphasized the limited time available for them to execute any new projects.

In an interview on JoyNews on February 14, he said “It will add some level of changes because as I said earlier ministers who have now come on board or have now been given a new portfolio will now come with new ideas, but you know it takes some time for the new ideas that they will bring on board to manifest.

“First of all they also need time to study the new ministries, their new portfolio and then see what they can do. It’s nine months to the election so they now coming on board by the time they settle to study their ministries and see the challenges that the ministry has, it will be getting to the election, and the campaign will become heated so definitely they will not be able to implement any policy.”

“Maybe with the existing policies, they might continue to implement those policies but to bring on board a new policy within this period, I doubt it,”  he added.

Regarding the Finance Ministry, he advised the new nominee to thoroughly study the ministry to understand all tax policies. This, he said, would help the minister find innovative ways to increase tax revenue without burdening the few individuals currently paying taxes.

“If I were the new minister, what I would do is to review the tax system. All the taxes this government has introduced which definitely burden the people of this country, I need to review the tax system.

“Look at those that can be withdrawn or cancelled. That is what I will do and also look at how I can expand the few that will remain. How we can expand it? You know taxes are such that if you continue to impose taxes on people who are already paying the tax, you are creating more burden for those people.

“There are other people who also earn income but they are not taxed, so if we are able to expand the base and reduce the rate, people will feel comfortable paying the tax. Once the base is big and the rate is low you will still achieve the revenue that you want.

“But because we have failed all the time to work on the base of our tax collection system, that is why we always want to introduce new taxes. People who have been paying the existing one will continue to pay those ones also,” he added.

The Ketu North MP also noted that, given that this year is an election year, the government may exert pressure on the incoming Finance Minister to release funds for ‘election projects’.

However, Mr. Avedzi stressed that the new Finance Minister must stand firm, or else the government’s expenditure could exceed its limits.

  • Bawumialogy is the only thing that can save Ghana from doom – Allotey Jacobs explains

Bawumialogy is the only thing that can save Ghana from doom – Allotey Jacobs explains

Former Central Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress, Bernard Allotey Jacobs, has asserted that the ideas, policies, and leadership style of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia are the only way to save Ghana.

Coining the ideas and policies of Dr Bawumia as “Bawumialogy”- not a real field of study, he noted that Ghanaians must make time to scrutinize and appreciate the visions of the Vice President that were laid bare by the NPP flagbearer on February 7 at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA).

In an interview on Peace FM, he said, “We need to term Dr Bawumia’s vision as “Bawumialogy”. We need to bath in it, sleep on it and know that Ghana’s progress and success as a country lies within the 70-point of Dr Bawumia.

“For me, I believe these UPSA visions have made Bawumia an alpha male politician in this country.”

In his address to the nation a week ago, the Vice President named a number of initiatives he would undertake to see Ghana’s fortunes turn around for better.

Among the initiatives to be undertaken are the removal of the Electronic Transaction Levy, introduction of a flat tax regime for the collection of taxes; formalize, regularize and regulate environmentally sustainable small scale mining.

The Vice President noted that the removal of the levy will aid government’s cashless economy agenda while a flat tax regime will broaden the tax base and take away pressure that is placed on GRA staff to collect revenues on existing tax payers.

To start the new tax system on a clean slate, the Vice President noted that the government will provide a tax amnesty (i.e., a complete exemption from the payment of taxes for a specified period and the waiving of interest and penalties) up to a certain year to individuals and businesses for failures to file taxes in previous years so that everyone will start afresh.

Meanwhile, Mr Allotey Jacobs believes that Dr Bawumia had a influential role in the recent reshuffling of Ministers by President Akufo-Addo.

“All that he said to ensure Ghana progress led his boss to see the need to reshuffle for him as he takes over to ride to success. The reshuffle motivates the rank and file of the party. We have seen some,” he said.

On Valentine’s Day morning, President Akufo-Addo announced his inaugural significant ministerial reshuffle, impacting approximately 12 current ministers of state, including 10 cabinet ministers and two regional ministers.

Notable ministers, including Ken Ofori-Atta and Kwaku Agyeman Manu, lost their positions entirely – Finance and Health Ministers respectively.

  • Senior presidential advisor on economy role makes Ofori-Atta bigger than Finance Minister – Franklin Cudjoe

Senior presidential advisor on economy role makes Ofori-Atta bigger than Finance Minister – Franklin Cudjoe

Founding President and Chief Executive Officer of IMANI Centre for Policy and Education, Franklin Cudjoe, has noted that Ken Ofori-Atta’s removal as Finance Minister does not necessarily prevent him from taking key decisions that affect the country’s economy.

According to Mr Cudjoe, reports from Asaase Radio indicate that former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta is set to assume the role of Senior Presidential Advisor on the Economy and will also serve as the President’s Special Envoy on International Investment and the Capital Markets.

In a Facebook post, Mr Cudjoe noted that Mr Ofori-Atta’s appointment, if proved to be true, will help him obtain authority that exceeds that of the Finance Minister.

“The former finance minister Ken Ofori-Atta is to be appointed as the senior presidential advisor on the economy. He will also serve as the president’s special envoy on international investment and the capital markets, according to Asaase News sources in the Office of the President.”

“Meaning he will be in charge of negotiating most big deals.. he is now bigger than MoF……,” he wrote.

This revelation comes directly from sources within the Office of the President, adding a new chapter to Ofori-Atta‘s distinguished career. As the former Finance Minister, he held the position for an impressive seven years, making him the longest-serving finance minister in Ghana’s Fourth Republic.

As Ofori-Atta steps into his new advisory roles, Kwaku Afriyie, the former Minister of Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, is also slated to become an advisor. According to Asaase’s sources, Afriyie will take on the crucial role of President Akufo-Addo’s Special Envoy on Climate.

The reshuffling of roles within the government signals a strategic move, with Mohammed Amin Adam, the current Minister of State at the Ministry of Finance, assuming the position of the substantive Minister for Finance.

This transition is expected to be seamless, ensuring continuity in the government’s debt restructuring negotiations with private creditors and for Ghana’s second review under its extended credit facility (ECF) arrangements with the International Monetary Fund.

The developments do not end here, as sources from the Office of the President hint at further significant changes, possibly announced later today. The morning’s press release from Jubilee House primarily focused on ministerial appointments presented to the Speaker of Parliament, with consequential matters regarding appointees.

Inside sources at Jubilee House anticipate the potential reshuffling of the Majority leadership in Parliament, a move that might be officially disclosed following a scheduled National Executive Committee meeting of the New Patriotic Party(NPP) on Monday.

This suggests a broader restructuring within the government’s leadership, marking a pivotal moment for Ghana’s political landscape. This is happening some nine months to Ghana’s next general election.

This protest seeks to demand accountability from the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

  • Ofori-Atta sacked to become Bawumia’s running mate?

Ofori-Atta sacked to become Bawumia’s running mate?

President Akufo-Addo has unveiled significant changes to his ministerial team in a major cabinet reshuffle, responding to growing calls for a shake-up.

In a statement issued by the Presidency on Wednesday, February 14, 2024, President Akufo-Addo kicked the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta out of government.

This follows months of cries from members of the general public to fire Mr Ofori-Atta over the bad state of the Ghanaian economy. A group of NPP MPs in 2023 led the calls for the removal of the Finance Minister.

President Akufo-Addo noted that he would consider their request after the Minister secures an external credit facility from the International Monetary Fund (IMF). It has been over nine months since Ghana secured its loan, and finally, President Akufo-Addo has answered the prayers of many Ghanaians.

But after his removal, there are unconfirmed reports indicating that the Finance Minister has been sacked in order to be selected as the running mate for the NPP flagbearer, Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

“If I tell you Ken Ofori-Atta is going to be Dr. Bawumia’s running mate, Will you believe ? Well wait for the announcement,” a user asked.

Shortly after Dr Bawumia was elected flagbearer of the NPP in November 2023, a list purportedly unveiling a roster of individuals eyeing the Vice President slot emerged on social media.

The unverified compilation consisted of names like Chief of Staff, Frema Opare; Roads Minister, Kwasi Amoako Atta; Communications Minister, Ursula Owusu; Energy Minister, Matthew Opoku Prempeh (Napo), Education Minister, Yaw Osei Adutwum, among others.

It has been over two months, and Dr Bawumia is yet to announce his running mate ahead of the 2024 general elections.

Many have been in support of a Bawumia-Napo ticket in order to enable the NPP secure massive votes in the Ashanti Region, their stronghold.

President Nana Akufo-Addo is reportedly facing internal party pressures to accept Energy Minister Matthew Opoku Prempeh as the running mate of choice for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

This is according to IMANI Africa’s Vice President, Bright Simons, who also asserts that the president is also allegedly dealing with growing calls from within the NPP for a possible ministerial reshuffle ahead of the upcoming elections.

The situation has sparked conversations about potential changes in key positions within the government.

Mr Simons, took to Twitter to highlight the growing tensions within the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP). According to Simons, the President is being urged to consider specific actions:

    1. Sacrifice Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta to strengthen Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia’s electoral standing.
    2. Accept Energy Minister Matthew Opoku Prempeh as the running mate to Bawumia, despite facing resistance.
    3. Remove some top ministers perceived as distant from grassroots sentiments.

All you need to know about the ‘testicular’ music instrument “Kashaka”

The Kashaka, also known as the Asalato, Cas Cas, or Shaker, is a traditional percussion instrument originating from West Africa. Consisting of two small gourds or shells connected by a string, it produces a distinct sound when struck together or played rhythmically.

Originally used in Ghana and other West African countries for cultural and religious ceremonies, the Kashaka was also a means of communication between tribes.

Today, it is popular worldwide in genres like jazz, world, and African music.

Crafted from natural gourds, the Kashaka’s shells are hollowed, connected with a string loop, and held between the fingers. Players strike the shells together or toss them in the air to create rhythmic beats. The instrument’s sound can be altered by varying the speed, force, and direction of strikes.

The Kashaka’s versatility allows for solo or group play, and it complements other percussion instruments like drums.

Portable and easy to play, it adds an authentic African sound to any musician’s repertoire, making it a valuable instrument for beginners and professionals alike.

One arrested for recent attacks amid chieftaincy dispute at Mempeasem

A recent assault on the Mempeasem community in the North Gonja District of the Savannah Region has led to the arrest of one individual.

The incident, which occurred on Monday, February 12, resulted in the destruction of numerous properties valued at thousands of Cedis.

According to reports from the Savannah Regional Security Council (SREGSEC) and local authorities in the District, the assault is believed to be a retaliation for a similar incident last year, during which several properties were damaged, leading residents to flee the community.

The recent attack has once again forced the Gonja Chief and his supporters to vacate the community out of fear for their safety.

Mempeasem, once known as a diverse agricultural community home to Dagombas, Mamprusis, Gonjas, and Tamprumas, has been embroiled in turmoil following chieftaincy and land boundary disputes between the Mamprusis and Gonjas.

These disputes arose from the creation of the Savannah and North East Regions from the Northern Region, which led to disagreements over land boundaries and ownership as part of the government’s decentralization efforts.

Despite the recent attacks, both the Gonjas and Mamprusis have chosen to remain silent. The Savannah Regional Police command has deployed additional personnel to the community to maintain law and order.

Political endorsements by chiefs not new, why use Ankobeahene as scapegoat – NDC

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has expressed surprise at the summons of Bafour Owiredu Agyarko Minta II, the Ankobeahene of the Begoro Stool, by the Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Council.

The Ankobeahene of the Begoro Stool, Bafour Owiredu Agyarko Minta II, has been summoned before the Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Council following allegations of endorsing the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, ahead of the country’s upcoming elections.

This comes after Otweresohene, Daasebre Ofosu Kwabi Ayebiahwe and Okyeame Owusu, filed a petition accusing Nana Owiredu Agyarko of engaging in partisan politics, which they believe tarnishes the reputation of the Begoro Stool.

According to the petitioners, the Ankobeahene brought disrepute to the Begoro Stool by involving himself in partisan politics during Mahama’s recent campaign tour of the Eastern Region, where he endorsed the former President.

The petitioners further claim that during Mahama’s engagement with traditional leadership, the chief mentioned that Nananom had invoked the gods to counter the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government’s “breaking the 8” mantra, and cautioned against alleged vote-rigging tactics by the current government.

In response, Mark-Oliver Kever, the Eastern Regional Chairman of the NDC, emphasized in an interview with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Eyewitness News on Citi FM that chiefs have previously endorsed candidates and urged their people to vote for their preferred leaders.

He also questioned the motive behind the summons, suggesting it might aim to instill fear or try to reduce Mahama’s growing popularity.

“Endorsements by chiefs, remarks by chiefs that suggest that one candidate is preferred over the other are not new. This is not a new phenomenon.”

“…So these are not new things; that is why it is surprising that somebody will seek to make a scapegoat out of this. We don’t know whether it is out of interest for his excellency John Dramani Mahama or out of fear that somebody is becoming popular, a particular candidate is becoming popular, chiefs are applauding him and yearning for his coming, and somebody may be shaking somewhere,” he stated.

Former President John Dramani Mahama embarked on a two-day ‘Building Ghana’ tour of the Eastern Region, starting on January 30, 2024.

Engaging his subjects, Balfour Owiredu Agyarko Minta II said, “We are looking for the day that we will use our hands to vote for JDM (John Dramani Mahama) for him to lead us. The 24-hour economy, he said, is coming to help all of us. Let us do well to open our eyes properly. Breaking the 8 will not happen, we have done the necessary tradition.”

Confirming the summons, Abuakwa Traditional State Secretary Dan Marfo Ofori Attah stated that the petitioners seek various remedies, including destoolment as Ankobeahene of Begoro, nullification of the respondent’s conduct, a public apology, and punitive customary sanctions if found guilty.

The hearing on this matter has been rescheduled to take place on February 19, 2024, following its initial date of February 12, 2024.

Supporters of NDC, NPP fight over Awutu Akomatom bridge construction

Supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Awutu Senya West constituency clashed over the construction of a bridge in the Awutu Akomatom community.

The NPP’s constituency chairman, Paul Aidoo, stated that residents requested the bridge during a visit by the NPP’s parliamentary candidate, Eugene Arhin.

However, the NDC claimed they had engaged with the community the previous week, and the MP, Gizella Tetteh Agbotui, had committed to providing cement to start construction this week. They accused NPP supporters of encroaching on the area to begin construction.

Police intervention prevented the situation from escalating further.

“We came here on Sunday to campaign in the community, and they told us that they needed a bridge. We began processes, and all of a sudden, the NDC encroached on the area. The people would have told us that the NDC had promised to construct the bridge if they had indeed visited and made promises. Gizella Tetteh is the MP, and she has not constructed the bridge for them, but why is she promising to do it now?” one NPP supporter told Citi News.

“The MP Gizella Tetteh engaged the community of Akomatom in a community durbar and promised to embark on the construction of the bridge. She even gave the community 20 bags of cement, so I don’t know why Eugene Arhin is doing that, knowing very well that Gizella has started,” an NDC supporter also said.

  • Your reshuffle will not miraculously solve Ghanaians’ suffering and uncontrolled corruption – Minority tells Akufo-Addo

Your reshuffle will not miraculously solve Ghanaians’ suffering and uncontrolled corruption – Minority tells Akufo-Addo

The Minority in Parliament has strongly criticized President Akufo-Addo’s recent ministerial reshuffle, describing it as uninspiring and long overdue.

Members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) expressed their dissatisfaction, arguing that the reshuffle fails to effectively tackle the current economic challenges facing the nation.

In a press release issued by Minority Leader Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, they condemned the President’s governance approach, expressing doubt that the reshuffle would address the deep-rooted economic difficulties associated with Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and his Economic Management Team.

“It is also too little too late, coming barely nine (9) months to the exit of the government. Neither will it solve the suffering and hardships confronting the people of Ghana as a result of the bad governance and massive uncontrolled corruption of the Akufo-Addo and Alhaji Bawumia’s government.”

“These injury time reserves, who have been on the bench for more than seven years without warm-up, cannot make any meaningful impact in the remaining nine (9) months to salvage the sinking ship and the massive economic mess created by Alhaji Bawumia and his economic mismanagement team.”

The Minority further highlighted that President Akufo-Addo’s administration has been characterized by extravagant spending and the depletion of state resources.

“The tenure of this government has been characterised by excessive borrowing, unsustainable debt, an economic crisis, high appetite for taxes, poor governance, reckless and wasteful expenditures, siphoning of state resources into private pockets of government appointees, as well as state capture by family and friends of the President and his Vice.”

After facing public pressure for months, President Akufo-Addo has made adjustments to his government.

These changes come a month after the resignations of former Trade Minister Alan Kyerematen and Agriculture Minister Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, who stepped down to focus on their political campaigns.

In line with the 1992 Constitution, the President officially informed the Speaker of Parliament about the new composition of the government on Tuesday, February 7.

Several new individuals have been appointed to ministerial positions, while others have been reshuffled to different ministries.

This protest seeks to demand accountability from the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

At the ‘Save Ghana Football’ demonstrations, some protesters are calling for football authorities to resign if they are unable to improve the performance of the Black Stars.

The team’s failure to progress beyond the group stage in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations marks the third consecutive major tournament in which they have faced early elimination.

Under the leadership of Kurt Okraku, the Ghana Football Association is now seeking its fifth coach for the Black Stars in the past five years.

Inflation marginally increases to 23.5% in January

Ghana’s inflation rate experienced a slight increase from 23.2% to 23.5% in January 2024, reversing the declining trend seen from July to December 2023.

This uptick is primarily due to higher non-food inflation drivers like accommodation, electricity, and clothing. However, food inflation continued to decrease during this period.

The unexpected rise comes shortly after the Central Bank reduced its monetary policy stance by 100 basis points in response to the previous downward trend in inflation.

Comparing January 2024 to January 2023, the general price level was 23.5% higher. Month-on-month inflation between December 2023 and January 2024 was 2.0%.

Regionally, the Eastern Region had the highest inflation rate at 37.1%, driven by food prices. In contrast, the Greater Accra Region had the lowest inflation rate at 18%.

Borteyman Sports Complex commissioned ahead of African Games

President Akufo-Addo has directed the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Local Organising Committee (LOC) of the African Games (Accra 2023) to ensure a remarkable edition of the competition, the most significant in its 57-year history.

During the official inauguration of the Borteyman Sports Complex, one of the primary venues for the Games scheduled between March 8 and 23, 2024, the President urged the LOC to spare no effort in providing unparalleled hospitality to the anticipated 8,000 visitors, including athletes, officials, journalists, and fans.

The Borteyman Sports Complex will host seven competitive sports, including table tennis, handball, tennis, volleyball, swimming, badminton, and the triathlon. Notably, four of these events will double as qualifiers for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, France.

Key features of the Borteyman facilities include a 1,000-seater capacity swimming pool with a 10-lane competition pool and an eight-lane warm-up pool. Additionally, there’s a multi-purpose Sports Hall seating 1,000 spectators for events such as basketball, badminton, netball, table tennis, and weightlifting. A 500-seater temporary dome will host handball, volleyball, judo, karate, taekwondo, and other events, along with a five-tennis court complex, including a 1,000-seater Centre Court.

President Akufo-Addo highlighted a hybrid approach, combining existing facilities with completed projects like the University of Ghana Stadium and the Borteyman Complex to ensure readiness for the Games. Despite initial skepticism, he expressed pride in the Borteyman Complex, seeing it as a lasting legacy and proof of Ghana’s readiness to host the continent.

He cited ongoing renovations of stadia in Accra, Cape Coast, and Kumasi, and the construction of 10 regional stadia, six of which are complete. Additionally, plans for 100 new astroturfs this year, with 150 already constructed during his Presidency, were revealed.

Minister of Youth and Sports, Mustapha Ussif, commended the consultant and contractor for the swift completion of the Borteyman facility. He envisioned it as a centre for sports excellence, serving as a legacy for future generations, and expressed hope for its sustained maintenance.

“The African Games will foster unity among Africans and celebrate the beauty of our diverse culture,” he remarked.

Ghana football is in a mess and we cannot accept this – Ablakwa endorses #SaveGhanafootball demo

Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has described the current state of Ghana Football as a “mess” and expressed full support for the “SaveGhanaFootball” demonstration currently underway.

The protest aims to raise awareness and push for structural reforms in football. Hundreds of people gathered at Obra Spot at the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange and are marching to the Ghana Football Association headquarters and Parliament to submit a petition.

Speaking on the AM show, Mr Ablakwa echoed the sentiments of football enthusiasts regarding the demonstration.

“I am in full support. I wanted to join them earlier but they said they will present a petition to Parliament so I will join the Speaker to receive the petition.

“Remember that I intercepted the document, the $8.5m budget [Black Stars AFCON budget]. If you see how much is going into football and yet we don’t have even FIFA standard pitches, no sports policy, Ghana football is in a mess and we cannot accept this. I fully endorse the SaveGhanaFootball demonstration.”

Mr Ablakwa had clashed with the Sports Ministry and leaders governing football on the whopping $8.5m amount budgeted for the Black Stars at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. The team exited the tournament, having picked up two points from a possible nine.

  • Okoe Boye appointed Health Minister after Akufo-Addo’s ministerial reshuffle

Okoe Boye appointed Health Minister after Akufo-Addo’s ministerial reshuffle

Chief Executive of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Dr. Bernard Okoe Boye, has been appointed Minister for Health-designate by President Akufo-Addo.

President Akufo-Addo on February 14, unveiled significant changes to his ministerial team in a major cabinet reshuffle, responding to growing calls for a shake-up.

Dr Okoe Boye is expected to take over from the current Health Minister, Kwaku Agyeman Manu, who many called for his removal due to some controversy in the procurement of some COVID-19 vaccines by the government.

The Ministry of Health is, however, no new area to Dr Okoe Boye.

In April 2020, President Akufo-Addo swore in Dr. Bernard Okoe Boye, then Member of Parliament for Ledzokuku, as a Deputy Minister of Health. The President charged him with supporting the Minister of Health in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

A transition team led by Dr. Isaac Noble Morrison (Board Member, NHIA) in April 2022 ushered in the new Chief Executive of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Hon. Dr. Bernard Okoe Boye into office.

In his opening remarks, the Chief Executive, Hon. Dr. Okoe Boye thanked the Almighty God and the President, His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for the opportunity to lead the NHIA and contribute to its positive growth.  He disclosed his desire to make a positive impact within the next 2 years and galvanized the support of Management to work together to achieve this goal.

Dr. Bernard Okoe Boye recently secured a landslide victory to represent the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Ledzokuku Constituency in the 2024 Parliamentary election, making him eligible to be appointed Minister.

Dr. Boye, a former Member ofParliament for Ledzokuku secured 902 votes out of the total valid votes cast.

His closest contender, Collins Nii Ashitey Ollenu secured 354 of the valid votes while Clifford Martey managed to secure 199 votes.

Per Section 78 (1) of the 1992 constitution reads that “Ministers of State shall be appointed by the President with the prior approval of Parliament from among members of Parliament or persons qualified to be elected as members of Parliament, except that the majority of Ministers of State shall be appointed from among members of Parliament.”

Born in Teshie in the Greater Accra Region on January 25, 1982, Dr Oko Boye is a New Patriotic Party member.

He holds a Master’s Degree in Public Health (MPH) from Hamburg School of Applied Science, an A1 Certificate In German (Goethe Institute, Accra), BSc In Medicine and Surgery from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, and BSc Human Biology from the same institution.

Dr Okoe Boye is an old student of the Presbyterian Boys’ Secondary School (PRESEC-Legon).

Police investigate mob attack on firefighters at Konongo

Police in the Ashanti Region have launched investigations into a mob assault on personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).

Officers of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) had to discontinue their efforts to battle a fierce blaze at Pra Junction over the weekend when a group of individuals attacked them.

On Saturday, February 10, 2024, the Konongo-Odumasi Fire Station received a distress fire call reporting another outbreak near Stellex Pharmacy in Konongo.

Rushing to the scene after containing the initial fire at Pra Junction, the crew faced hostility from the public upon arrival, resulting in damage to their borrowed fire engine.

According to the GNFS, the irate crowd never allowed its officers to perform their lawful duty at the fire scene.

To protect their lives, the duty officer in charge directed the rescue team to return to base.

This follows a disturbing incident at the O.A. Travel and Tours terminal at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle (Avenor) where unidentified individuals, incensed by the alleged delay in the Fire Service’s response to a fire emergency, resorted to pelting the fire tenders with stones.

It took the intervention of the police service to restore calm and allow the firefighters to get to work.

  • NMC has failed journalists by not protecting them from attacks – Retired Journalist

NMC has failed journalists by not protecting them from attacks – Retired Journalist

A retired journalist from Graphic Communications Group, Lloyd Evans, has voiced his support for the Ghana Journalist Association’s (GJA) decision to blacklist two Members of Parliament (MPs) for allegedly attacking journalists.

He sees this as a crucial step towards safeguarding press freedom and upholding the integrity of journalism in the country.

The incidents leading to the media blacklist included the reported attack on Citi FM’s Northern regional correspondent, Mohammed Aminu Alabira, allegedly by MP for Yendi, Farouk Aliu Mahama, during coverage of the National Patriotic Party’s (NPP) parliamentary primaries, and the alleged assault on Cape FM’s David Kobbina by supporters of the MP for Awutu Senya East, Mavis Hawa Koomson.

In contrast, Yaw Boadu-Ayeboafoh, the chairman of the National Media Commission (NMC), expressed skepticism about the GJA’s approach, suggesting that it might not yield the desired outcomes.

Speaking on the 12 O’Clock Report on Tuesday, February 13, Evans expressed disappointment in Boadu-Ayeboafoh’s failure to bridge the gap between the GJA and the NMC, given his background in the industry.

“I think, as a very senior journalist and then a chairman of the Media Commission, he [Boadu-Ayeboafoh] should have been able to bridge the gap. Ever since journalists started having these attacks, I haven’t seen how the Media Commission has gone to condemn some of these things and then taken certain actions,” Evans stated.

Mr. Evans echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the importance of condemning attacks on journalists and taking decisive action to address such incidents. He stressed that journalists should not be subjected to physical assault or intimidation, highlighting the Ghana Journalist Association’s decision to blacklist the MPs as a commendable step towards protecting journalists’ rights.

“So for the GJA also to take such a step for me, I think it’s a step in the right direction. I don’t think journalists are punching bags that any Tom, Dick, and Harry at all can get up, and then with the least issue and then start punching them, I don’t think that is right.”

Reflecting on Boadu-Ayeboafoh’s reservations, Evans suggested that a constructive dialogue between the National Media Commission (NMC) and the Ghana Journalist Association (GJA) could be beneficial in addressing concerns and finding common ground.

He urged Boadu-Ayeboafoh to initiate a roundtable discussion to thoroughly examine the implications of the GJA’s decision and explore potential alternatives.

“If Mr. Ayeboafoh is not happy with what has happened, the best thing for him to do, as I said earlier, should call the GJA to a round table discussion and then discuss the pros and cons of their action.”

The Jirapa MP, Cletus Seidu Dapilah, has announced a GH¢100,000 bounty on the killers of Eric Johnson, the CEO of Royal Cosy Hills Hotel.

He stated that any person who provides credible information to enable the police to solve the murder case will receive the money.

This action comes after the alleged murder of Mr. Johnson in his private residence over the weekend. The police have arrested seven persons in connection with the incident.

Mr. Dapilah mentioned that the unusual circumstances surrounding Mr. Johnson’s murder raise many unanswered questions.

“The Villa had no door broken, no window was broken, his room door was not broken yet they entered so this is for everybody to think about and to wonder who might have had access to be able to enter the place without breaking any doors or window.

“Anybody who can provide us information so we can unravel or arrest the murderers, I will give a reward of ¢100,000 to anybody who will give us meaningful information to conclude the investigation.”

  • Tamale water crisis is due to severe harmattan condition – GWCL

Tamale water crisis is due to severe harmattan condition – GWCL

The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) has reported that the water shortage situation in the Tamale community has worsened due to the prevailing harmattan weather conditions in the northern part of the country.

Stanley Martey, the Director of Communications at the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL), stated that the unfavourable weather conditions have caused the Nawuni River to dry up, exacerbating the situation.

Member of Parliament for Tamale South, Haruna Iddrisu, raised concerns on Tuesday, February 13, about the acute water shortage in the Tamale metropolis, which he said has persisted for over two years. He lamented that the situation has brought immense hardship to residents in his constituency.

Stanley Martey attributed the problem largely to the dry weather conditions, highlighting the challenges faced by the Ghana Water Company Limited in providing adequate water supply to the affected areas.

“Around this time of the year, we are in the dry season, and the levels of the Nawuni River, where we fetch water for treatment, have gone down. When the levels go down, they win alluvial sand, which destroys the quality of the raw water. So, it becomes difficult for us to get water with low turbidity to treat.”

Meanwhile, the Ghana Water Company Limited has announced that it will shut down one of its plants at Kpong, starting from Wednesday, February 14. This plant serves the people of Somanya and its environs.

Mr. Martey stated that the temporary shutdown is necessary to facilitate the installation of a new interconnection pipeline and foot valves at the Kpong Water Treatment Plant. He assured the public that measures have been taken to ensure there is no water shortage during this period.

“In the last two weeks, we have been planning for this interconnection, and we have informed the areas that will be affected, especially the entire Krobo area.

“We have been able to work out some 3 million gallons of water more into the system to ensure that we can finish the job within 48 hours to put the plant back into operation.”

  • Gov’t to implement 65% quota on imported cutlasses effective March 30

Gov’t to implement 65% quota on imported cutlasses effective March 30

The Ghana International Trade Commission (GITC) has announced a 65 percent quota on the importation of cutlasses into the country, effective March 30, 2024, for a 24-month period, subject to review.

This decision follows a trade petition filed by Crocodile Machete Ghana Limited, which cited an influx of imported machetes impacting its competitiveness and operational costs.

The quota will restrict imports from countries such as China and Colombia, which accounted for 74.68% and 17.93% of imports, respectively, between 2021 and July 2023.

Crocodile Machete petitioned the GITC on September 29, 2021, “requesting for remedial measures for unfair trade practices relating to dumping, subsidization, and increasing quantities of imported machetes, which happened to be counterfeited and substandard machetes.”

Dr. Adu Gyamfi, Chairman of the Ghana International Trade Commission, in the ruling, said it was for “Crocodile Matchet to enable it to be competitive and restore its market share.”

“The Commission, having regard to the GITC Act 2016, Act 926, and the GITC (Safeguard Measures) Regulations, 2020 (LI 2426), therefore hereby recommends a safeguard measure of 65% quota on all imports of machetes beginning 30th March 2024 to last for 24 months subject to review.

“The 65% quota translates into a total of 1534.4 metric tonnes as against the current 2,365.85 metric tonnes of machetes imported annually. The remaining shortfall of 831.45 metric tonnes of machete is what is expected to be compensated by Crocodile Machete to enable it to be competitive and restore its market share.”

Minister of Works and Housing, Francis Asenso-Boakye, has announced the Ministry’s decision to pay tribute to former Works and Housing Minister, Hackman Owusu-Agyeman, by naming a recent housing project in Accra after him.

Mr Asenso-Boakye during a tour of the newly constructed 16 units of 4-bedroom houses at Ringway in Accra, stated, “Hon. Hackman, as we all call him, was very instrumental during his tenure as sector Minister, and undertook significant projects at the Ministry.”

“He implemented President Kufuor’s Affordable Housing project, which saw the development of massive housing in various parts of the country. It is, therefore, an honour to name this project after him.”

In addition to naming the housing project after former Works and Housing Minister Hackman Owusu-Agyeman, the Minister of Works and Housing, Francis Asenso-Boakye, mentioned plans to name other projects after former sector ministers to inspire other public officers.

The “Hackman Owusu-Agyeman Court” project, located at Ringway in Accra, aims to provide accommodation for senior public officials, including ministers of state, superior court judges, and senior civil servants. Developed by the State Housing Company (SHC) Limited, the project comprises 16 housing units, a significant increase from the previous three houses on the same piece of land (1.5 Acres).

I am a hairdresser – Woman in viral military recruitment photos breaks silence

Lydia Wiafe, a 41-year-old hairdresser from Ejisu Apromase in the Ashanti Region, has expressed distress and fear after images of her in military attire went viral on social media.

She vehemently denies any connection to the photos and insists she has never served in the Ghana Armed Forces.

The widely shared images sparked outrage due to her age and alleged affiliation with the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Lydia Wiafe stated that the incident has caused significant psychological impact and disrupted her livelihood. She called on the military and the police to help identify the person or persons responsible for the images.

“I suspect it was during one of our political rallies and events that this person took pictures of me and circulated them. A lot of people, including relatives, have been calling me and I am not able to work to even earn a living due to this despicable act.

“The person behind the creation and circulation of these pictures should be found and exposed. This obviously could have a negative impact on my life since I can be attacked by mistake. I am living in fear because the military could come after me. This is a clear case of falsehood against my person.

“The person behind this despicable act has dragged the name of the Ghana Armed Forces into the mud. I will appeal to the hierarchy of the military to ensure this person is brought to justice. I have been inundated with phone calls and I believe that when this person is found and punished, there will be finality to this matter so my name can rest too. I am comfortable living and working in this community. My children are also worried about this issue.”

Her neighbors in Ejisu Apromase in the Ashanti Region, according to reports, have also confirmed her story and are joining her in calling for justice.

“She cannot be enlisted into the Ghana Armed Forces and she is not a military officer. She has been a hairdresser since. She does not have the required educational background to even be enlisted in the military,” one resident said.

“The issue is a complex one. The leadership of the Ghana Armed Forces should investigate this matter and ensure that the people behind the circulated pictures are made to face the law. She has never been a military officer. Her highest education is Form 4, and that cannot qualify her,” another said.

  • Don’t wait till 2025, support our private member’s bill to remove harsh taxes – Minority to Bawumia

Don’t wait till 2025, support our private member’s bill to remove harsh taxes – Minority to Bawumia

Minority Leader in Parliament, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, has stated that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) legislators will push for the removal of some nuisance taxes through a private member’s bill.

This decision comes after Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia pledged to abolish several taxes, including the electronic transactions levy, emissions tax, and the proposed 15 percent Value Added Tax on electricity.

Dr. Forson expressed that if Dr. Bawumia is sincere about his intentions, the NPP MPs will support the private member’s bill when it is introduced on the floor of Parliament.

Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express on February 13, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson argued that the majority’s position on the matter will confirm whether or not the NPP flagbearer was honest about his intentions to abolish certain taxes.

“All the taxes that we have opposed, we will make an attempt to get the government to remove them.

“In fact, now that the Vice President himself has come to confirm to us that they don’t want the taxes, we have already said on the floor, he is only copying what the NDC is saying.

“I have said on the floor and the hansard will bear me out that the next NDC government will remove this [taxes]. I have said this. I am the first person,” he said.

When asked why he would not wait for the next NDC to remove these taxes, the Minority leader said “Why should we wait? Ghanaians are struggling.

“The only reason why this tax is still effective and your good self and my good self and the ordinary Ghanaian is paying this tax is that the NDC is not in office.”

Dr. Ato Forson emphasized that the NDC is more concerned about the welfare of the populace than the governing party. Therefore, if they were to win office, they would prioritize scrapping all taxes that have overburdened the population in their first few months in office.

“In fact, if the NDC is in office and if Ghanaians vote for us, by December, our first budget before Easter, we will remove all these taxes. But now we are not in office. This is a government that is in office; they have said that they will remove it in 2025. To show good faith to the people of Ghana, we urge them to come and remove it.”

“We have to compel them and that is what it is. We have to compel them to remove these taxes because it is not easy,” he added.

  • It is not possible to separate Akufo-Addo and Bawumia; they are like siamese twins – Edem Agbana on accountability

It is not possible to separate Akufo-Addo and Bawumia; they are like siamese twins – Edem Agbana on accountability

The National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s Parliamentary Candidate for Ketu North, Edem Agbana, insists that Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia cannot escape responsibility for President Akufo-Addo’s perceived shortcomings.

Mr Agbana argues that as Vice President, Dr. Bawumia has been a crucial part of the Akufo-Addo administration and should be held accountable for the economic challenges faced under the New Patriotic Party’s governance.

He emphasized that any attempt by Dr. Bawumia to evade accountability would be futile, as he and President Akufo-Addo are inseparable in this regard.

“The president who was supposed to assign him (Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia) told the good people of Ghana that because of his economic wizardry, I allowed him to run the economy. So every good thing we have achieved, give him the credit.”

“Then, all of a sudden, the abysmal performance they have spent seven years defending, he (Dr Bawumia) is running away from it but let’s tell him that he can’t run away. He and President Akufo-Addo are conjoined or Siamese twins. They simply can’t be separated,” he told the media.

    Bawumia’s small-scale mining policy is a game-changer – Deputy Lands Minister

The Deputy Minister for Lands and Natural Resources responsible for Mines, Hon. George Mireku Duker, has provided extensive insights into the policy strategy of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the Vice President and Presidential aspirant of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), for the small-scale mining sector.

He characterized it as a groundbreaking strategy with the potential to revolutionize Ghana’s mining industry.

Speaking at a press engagement on Tuesday, February 13, 2024, Hon. Mireku Duker meticulously outlined Dr. Bawumia’s mining policy, expressing his strong belief in its capacity to transform the mining sector, particularly the small-scale mining segment.

He explained that the strategy is anchored on two thematic areas, which are “ushering Ghana into a Golden age for the maximization of the benefits from our natural resources like gold, lithium, bauxite, and so on. The key to doing this is value addition and Ghanaian ownership; and establishing a new paradigm in natural resource contracts. “

George Mireku Duker highlighted that the 18-point policy document aims to formalize, regularize, and environmentally sustainably regulate small-scale mining. This approach is intended to promote the growth and expansion of the sector.

He noted that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is well aware of the socio-economic potential of environmentally friendly and profitable small-scale mining.

“We will Formalize, regularize and regulate environmentally sustainable small scale mining. About one million people are engaged in small scale mining. Our goal would be to help grow small scale mining companies into large scale companies with capacity building and assisting them to access financing to acquire equipment. We can create many millionaires in the small scale mining industry if we support them.”

To achieve this goal, Mr. Mireku Duker highlighted that a government led by Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia would establish a viable link within the entire value chain of the small-scale mining sector.

This link would enable small-scale miners to sell their gold to the Bank of Ghana, thus becoming part of the gold reserves of the central bank.

“We will support the Minerals Commission and key stakeholders to formalize the Artisanal and Small-Scale Gold Mining (ASGM) sector with the objective of ensuring that the activities of the entire value chain are sustainably and responsibly done so that most of the gold produced by this sector can be sold to the Bank of Ghana (BoG) and be eligible to be part of the gold reserves of the central bank.”

Mr. Mireku Duker mentioned that under a Bawumia administration, the decentralization program initiated by the Akufo-Addo government regarding the Minerals Commission and Environmental Protection Agency would continue. This program aims to ensure that these institutions have a presence in all mining districts, facilitating the smooth administration of mining activities in the country.

He further stated that the successful Community Mining Scheme would be expanded to ensure its sustainability. Additionally, all small-scale miners would be required to register with the National Small Scale Miners Association.

“We will further deepen the decentralization of the minerals commission as well as Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and ensure that they are present in all mining districts.”.

He assured that under Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s administration, there would be a significant reduction in illegal mining activities through innovative ideas and policies. The administration would also take decisive action against miners who flout regulations.

Mireku Duker called on Ghanaians, especially those in the small-scale mining sector, to trust Dr. Bawumia to protect their jobs and eliminate the excesses that are harming both the industry and the country.

Deputy Information Minister, Fatimatu Abubakari supported the Deputy Lands Minister’s statement, emphasizing that the Ministry’s efforts would create jobs for youth in the mining sector and promote knowledge transfer. She also highlighted that the Community Mining scheme would benefit many people in various communities.

  • Vintage clothes still rock! Here is why

Vintage clothes still rock! Here is why

The current resurgence of vintage clothing reflects a broader cultural trend towards nostalgia and a desire for authenticity.

While the fashion industry continually introduces new styles and trends each season, there is a growing appreciation for the timeless appeal of past eras. What was once primarily of interest to collectors and history enthusiasts has now become a mainstream phenomenon.

Several factors have contributed to the popularity of vintage fashion.

Firstly, there is a strong sense of longing in our culture, especially among those approaching middle age, for the fashions and aesthetics of their youth.

The bold shapes and vibrant patterns of the 80s, for example, hold a special place in our collective consciousness.

Secondly, the rise of social media platforms like Instagram and Pinterest has allowed people to easily discover and obsess over vintage items. This exposure has fueled a desire to emulate these looks and incorporate vintage pieces into modern wardrobes.

Furthermore, the appeal of vintage clothing aligns with the values of the eco-conscious consumer. Purchasing used clothing extends the life of an item and reduces waste, making it a more sustainable choice.

It also allows individuals to express their unique style through one-of-a-kind pieces, contributing to the rejection of fast fashion’s mass-produced garments.

From a style perspective, vintage clothing offers more visually exciting and inventive shapes, colors, and patterns than contemporary pieces.

This aesthetic appeal, combined with the ethical and sustainable aspects of vintage fashion, has contributed to its growing commercial success and cultural significance.

In conclusion, the vintage trend is likely to continue due to its appeal to those seeking sustainability, uniqueness, and a connection to the past.

As consumers become more conscious of their fashion choices, the timeless allure of vintage clothing is expected to remain a prominent feature in the fashion landscape.

  • 10 style mistakes to avoid as a man

10 style mistakes to avoid as a man

Here are ten common style mistakes that men often make, along with easy solutions to fix them and enhance their overall appearance:

    Shirt Sleeves

Start by unbuttoning the cuffs and any buttons on the gauntlet (the part of the sleeve that extends from the cuff to the elbow). Fold the cuff back, flipping it inside out to create a clean edge at the desired length. Depending on the width of the cuff and your preference, you may need to fold the cuff one or two more times to reach just below the elbow. Smooth out any wrinkles or unevenness in the fabric to create a neat appearance. If the sleeves are still too long or too loose, adjust the folds until you achieve the desired length and tightness around the arm.

    Dress Shirt Muffin Top

When a dress shirt is not tucked in correctly, it can create a “muffin top” effect. To avoid this, you can use the military tuck method. This technique involves pulling the excess fabric on both sides of the shirt and neatly tucking it in, ensuring a smooth appearance. Pairing this with a nice belt can further enhance the overall look.

    Indoor Sunglasses and Caps

It’s generally considered improper etiquette to wear sunglasses and caps indoors. These accessories are designed for outdoor use and are best worn outside. When indoors, it’s polite to remove them to show respect for the indoor environment and those around you.

    Wristwatch

An empty wrist is a missed opportunity for style. A watch can elevate even a basic T-shirt, adding a touch of sophistication and enhancing your overall look.

    Leather Shoes for All Occasions

Leather shoes are versatile and can complement both jeans and shorts. This debunks the stereotype that they are only suitable for formal settings.

    Overreliance on Sneakers

While sneakers are fantastic, wearing them exclusively can limit your wardrobe options. Consider incorporating a variety of footwear styles, such as leather loafers, chukka boots, or Chelsea boots, to expand your style choices.

    No-Show Socks

Wearing no-show socks is essential when going barefoot in the sun to prevent blisters, discomfort, and bad odors from sweaty feet.

    Knowing When to Tuck

Knowing when to tuck in your dress shirt depends on its length. Longer shirts should be tucked in, while shorter shirts can be left untucked for a more casual look.

    Flappy Collars

When wearing elegant dress suits, it can be frustrating to have flimsy collars that don’t stay upright. To achieve a refined and tidy appearance, consider using magnetic collar stays.

    Dressing for the Occasion

It’s crucial to wear clothes that are appropriate for the situation. Always pay attention to the dress code and try not to be the person who shows up to formal occasions wearing casual clothes or vice versa. Wearing the right attire shows respect for the event and the people attending.

  • Suspended Agyapa Royalties deal cost gov’t $12m – MIIF

Suspended Agyapa Royalties deal cost gov’t $12m – MIIF

It has been revealed that the government spent $12 million on the suspended Agyapa royalties deal.

The CEO of the Minerals Income Investment Fund (MIIF), Edward Nana Yaw Koranteng, disclosed this at a Public Accounts Committee (PAC) Sitting.

President Akufo-Addo ordered the suspension of the Agyapa deal following public outcry in 2021. The government had proposed the deal to raise funds through mineral royalties for key infrastructure projects, but it was eventually suspended after opposition from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and some civil society organisations.

However, according to the CEO of the Minerals Income Investment Fund, $12 million was expended on the processes to issue the initial public offering on the London Stock Exchange before the suspension.

Responding to whether the Fund did due diligence, Mr Koranteng said “My understanding honourable chair is that the Ministry of Finance procured the services of international consultancy and companies and financial institutions that have done this in the past and that the advice provided was what Ministry of Finance stood on.”

“We started with the Ministry of Finance and from the documents that we have, it is clear that the correct advice was provided on the set-up of a gold royalties company where the streaming of the royalties would benefit Ghana.”
