    Same-sex activities a threat to Ghana’s growing population – Catholic Bishop’s Conference

The Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference (GCBC) has expressed its support for the passage of the LGBTQ+ Bill, asserting that it should become law to safeguard authentic Ghanaian family values perceived to be at risk due to homosexual acts.

The GCBC commended the country’s Parliament for dedicating effort and time to develop the bill, which, upon enactment, is expected to advocate for appropriate human sexual rights and impose punitive measures proportional to the act of homosexuality.

This stance was conveyed in a statement signed and issued in Accra by Most Rev. Matthew Kwasi Gyamfi, the President of GCBC and Catholic Bishop of Sunyani.

“We can state that the draft bill on “Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values 2021” currently in Parliament is in the right direction, as it seeks to enact laws against criminal homosexual acts.

According to the Conference, the promotion of same-sex marriage threatens the country’s population.

“The lawmakers may decide that a man marrying a man or a woman marrying a woman is not in the interest of the nation since, in the long term, it will affect the size of the population of our country if many people do this.

In such a case, the lawmakers will be within their rights to enact laws against that. In such cases, it will be right for the lawmakers to criminalise such homosexual actions by punitive measures,” the statement added.

The Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference (GCBC) has outlined its perspective on homosexuality, stating that while the Church deems homosexual acts as sins, the State, using different language, may view them as potentially harmful to society. The GCBC acknowledges that the State has the responsibility to implement measures it considers necessary for safeguarding the nation.

In this context, if the State perceives homosexual acts as detrimental to the interests and well-being of the nation, the GCBC believes it is appropriate to introduce punitive measures to address such situations.

“The long-held teaching of the Roman Catholic Church has been that while homosexual people are to be loved and respected and not be discriminated against, homosexual acts are intrinsically immoral and must be condemned,” the statement added.

Over 2,700 traffic offenders convicted by MTTD

The Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service has achieved significant success in its efforts to enhance road safety.

From January to October 2023, the MTTD secured convictions for 2,705 traffic offenders, leading to a notable reduction in road accidents and fatalities.

Key initiatives such as Operation PAILES (Police Anti-Insecure Loading Enforcement Strategy) and Police Invisible Eyes have played a crucial role in these convictions.

Presently, 12 individuals are serving jail sentences, while fines imposed on others contribute significantly to the country’s revenue.

Chief Superintendent Alexander Obeng, the Director for Research and Education at the MTTD, expressed optimism that these punitive measures will contribute to behavioral change. He made these remarks during the launch of the National Road Safety Authority’s “Stop speeding-Stay Alive” road safety Christmas campaign on Tuesday, December 5, 2023.

“In this process January to October this year, we can report that in all our efforts about 2, 705 offenders when they were put before court were convicted. So far, 12 are in jail and the court imposed varying fines on all and so far it has accrued into the state coffers a total fine of GH¢1,988,219. We hope this will go a long way to deter those who are bold to repeat such behaviours and deter those who intend to start for the first time,” he said.

“Last year, we had 811 deaths by October…it has reduced to 751. One death is one too many so if the population is increasing and this introduction is also yielding positive results it’s natural that we are happy with it,” Chief Superintendent Alexander Obeng noted.

Additionally, Police Action Against Rider Indiscipline (OPERATION PAARI) contributes to the significant decline in motorcycle-related deaths as offenders are sensitized and issued with warning letters.

  • Do not ratify Ghana’s “unacceptable” lithium agreement with Barari DV Limited – Sophia Akuffo to Parliament

Do not ratify Ghana’s “unacceptable” lithium agreement with Barari DV Limited – Sophia Akuffo to Parliament

Former Chief Justice, Justice Sophia Akuffo, has urged Parliament not to ratify the lithium agreement between the State and Barari DV Ghana Limited.

She expressed concerns that the current form of the agreement would disadvantage the country, depriving it of the full benefits of lithium, particularly as the world is increasingly moving towards green energy.

She made the statement when the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) indicated its intention to petition Parliament against the ratification of the lithium deal during a forum where the think-tank presented its analysis findings to the clergy.

“It is not acceptable and should not be ratified by Parliament. In other words, Parliament should not accept it on behalf of the people of Ghana because it is not in our interest.”

“All that IEA is saying is that Parliament should not, must not, ought not to ratify this agreement,” she added.

The former Chief Justice insisted that “the agreement which will be signed and ratified henceforth must at least have a particular framework which is a far departure from the colonial structure.”

Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abu Jinapor, has indicated that his ministry will present Ghana’s lithium mining lease with Barari DV Ghana Limited to Parliament for ratification.

He announced this initiative while addressing the press on Thursday, November 12, over the lithium mining lease signed on October 20, 2023.

According to Mr Jinapor, the mining lease itself compels ratification by Parliament, as failure of that will lead to the annulment of the lease.

“There has been an issue of ratification of the lease. It has been raised by several people. This has never been lost on us as this is expressly provided for the mining lease granted to Barari DV Ghana Limited. Specifically, Clause 1E of the lease states ‘the mining lease is subject to ratification by Parliament in accordance with Article 2681 of the constitution and section 54 of Act 703’. ‘Upon execution of this mining lease, the Minister shall cause the mining lease to be laid in Parliament for ratification’.”

By the very term of the lease, therefore, ratification by Parliament is a condition precedent, he said, “as unratified mining lease confers no enforceable right, and the government has always been mindful of this decision.”

“The mining lease in question will be laid before Parliament for ratification,” he added.

The mining lease, granted for 15 years to Barari, a subsidiary of Atlantic Lithium Limited, an Australian company listed on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) and the Alternative Investment Market (AIM) of the London Stock Exchange, covers an area of 42.63 km² in and around Ewoyaa in the Mfantseman Municipality of the Central Region.

The $250-million project, located in Ewoyaa, Mfantseman Municipality in the Central Region, is set to commence production by 2025.

The deal includes a 10% royalty and 13% free carried interest by the state, surpassing the existing 5% and 10%, respectively, for other mining agreements.

Barari DV Ghana Limited is also required to contribute 1% of its revenue to a community development fund for the upliftment of the mining area.

The Lands Minister notes that the lease demands the construction of a mining refinery in Ghana for the processing of lithium by the Australian company.

4 interdicted head teachers face investigative committee today

Four out of the seven headteachers who were interdicted for allegedly charging unauthorized fees in the Ashanti Region are anticipated to appear before a committee assigned to investigate the claims on December 12.

The Ghana Education Service (GES) clarified that the headteachers were accused of imposing various unapproved fees on students. These alleged fees include payments for house dues, books and calculators, fees for the admission process, the printing of slips and files, and hymn books.

In an interview with Citi News, Zakaria Suleman Yeboah, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS), stated that the headteachers are willing to cooperate with the committee during the investigation.

“I cannot say whether the items stated against them [the headteachers] are right or not. I have met my members, and we have spoken at length, and they have given me their side of the story, so I hope that the committee sitting will help us unravel some of the issues at stake.”

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has directed seven headteachers in senior high schools across the Ashanti Region to step aside amid allegations of charging unauthorized fees from fresh students.

In separate statements, the GES confirmed that investigations have been initiated into the conduct of these headteachers. The implicated individuals are Mrs. Selina Anane Afoakwa, headmistress of Kumasi Girls SHS, Mr. Nataniel Asamoah, headmaster of Asanteman SHS, Mr. Andrews Boateng, headmaster of Kumasi Senior High Technical School, and Mr. Kwadwo Obeng-Appiah, headmaster of Manso-Edubia SHS.

The remaining three are Mr. Daniel Boamah Duku, headmaster of the Agric Nzema Community SHS, Ms. Gladys Sarfowah, headmistress of Nkawie Senior High Technical School, and Mr. Ampong Ahmed Omar, headmaster of Collins SHS. The GES is taking action to investigate and address the allegations against these headteachers.

Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has introduced the government’s latest business and youth intervention, the Business and Employment Assistance Programme, at a launch event in Sunyani on Monday, December 11.

Administered by the Youth Employment Agency (YEA), the initiative aims to support 10,000 businesses owned by young Ghanaians, leading to the employment of 20,000 youth, with their salaries covered by the Youth Employment Agency.

Dr Bawumia underscored that the jobs anticipated to be created through this initiative will contribute to the existing 2.1 million jobs that the government claims to have already generated.

This initiative is designed to enhance sustainability and growth for these businesses while simultaneously providing additional employment opportunities for the youth.

“The Business and Employment Assistance Programme and other youth interventions under the YEA and under agencies, underline our government’s commitment to creating more jobs and opportunities for the youth, in addition to the 2.1m jobs created by the government in the past seven years in the public and private sectors respectively,” the New Patriotic Party’s flagbearer said.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Ashanti region has unveiled plans to lead former President John Mahama in a public engagement initiative on the principal streets of Kumasi.

The purpose of this initiative is to interact with the public and discuss the NDC’s proposal for a 24-hour economy.

The 24-hour economy policy, introduced by the opposition party, has generated both praise and criticism since its announcement by the NDC flagbearer in preparation for the 2024 elections.

Speaking to the press, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, the Ashanti Regional Secretary of the NDC, expressed the party’s confidence in the potential economic benefits of the 24-hour economy policy.

Ashanti Regional Secretary, Dr. Frank Amoakohene

He stated that the NDC aims to launch a sensitization campaign to underscore the significance of this policy, as emphasized by former President John Dramani Mahama during his recent ‘Building Ghana Tour.’

The campaign is expected to engage the public and provide insights into the party’s vision for economic development through the proposed 24-hour economy.

“We will assure citizens to not give up because help is on its way. H.E John Dramani Mahama will rescue the country come 7th December, 2024 and he shall implement the 24 hour economy which will transform Ghana within 24 months,” he said.

According to Dr. Amoakohene, the policy championed by the NDC will lead Ghana into economic prosperity.

“The NDC, under the leadership of H.E. John Dramani Mahama, is committed to the vision of a 24-hour economy. This proposition is driven by the pressing need to address unemployment challenges across various sectors of the economy. We believe that transitioning to a 24-hour economy will unlock immense opportunities for businesses and individuals,” he indicated.

$338m loan sought by govt to reconstruct Accra-Tema motorway, others

Vice Chairman of the Finance Committee of Parliament, On Monday, Patrick Boamah, has announced that the government is seeking parliamentary approval for a $338 million loan agreement for the rehabilitation and expansion of the Accra-Tema motorway and other roads across the country.

Moreover, the facility is earmarked to finance the rehabilitation of the existing six-lane divided Nsawam highway within a timeframe of 36 months. Boamah provided these details during a press briefing in Accra.

Regarding the scope of work, he said, “The Accra-Tema motorway alone is 19.5 kilometres, but this project is 27.7 kilometres, so one may ask, where are you getting the remainder from? The entire project is divided into three sections. The first section is the Accra-Tema Motorway, which is 19.5 kilometres, and it is going to be the rehabilitation and expansion of a minimum of 10 lanes on the motorway… Then, the second section is N1, the George Walker Bush highway, and the scope is 5.7 kilometres… Then the third scope is the Nsawam road, rehabilitation of the existing six lanes on the Nsawam road.”

“…So this is the scope of work that is going to happen. So you can tell from what I have told you that it is going to be a very comprehensive program that will span about 3 years or more depending on how the project goes. And it is going to be a joint venture between Maripoma Limited and Ghana Infrastructure Fund.”

On November 15, Finance Minister Mr Ofori-Atta revealed that “preparation for the reconstruction of the Accra-Tema Motorway under the Road Sector’s Public Private Partnerships (PPP) with Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF) is on course.”

The Concession Agreement and draft Engineering Procurement and Construction (EPC) agreement, he noted, have been approved by Cabinet and will be submitted to Parliament for approval “shortly.”

The Accra-Tema motorway is currently filled with potholes, which has led to several road accidents and adversely impacted the durability of cars on the road. As such, many called on the Ministry of Roads to take charge and have the challenges addressed.

The Finance Minister noted that the government’s infrastructure progamme will also be anchored on strong private sector collaboration.

“Government will continue to pursue the Mining Sector Roads rehabilitation projects to improve the road network in mining communities,” he added.

Quickly review anti-witchcraft bill and present to Parliament – CHRAJ to Akufo-Addo

Commissioner of the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), Advocate Joseph Whittal, is urging the government to accelerate the passage of the anti-witchcraft bill.

He emphasized the urgency of this legislative action, pointing to the hardships faced by women labeled as witches who endure assault and stigma.

Whittal made these remarks during the commemoration of International Human Rights Day 2023, organized by the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice.

The event, held on December 11, 2023, focused on the theme, “The 75th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights: Implications for Human Rights Protection in Ghana.”

In his address, Whittal highlighted the importance of addressing the challenges faced by individuals accused of witchcraft and emphasized the need for legal measures to protect their rights and dignity.

“Our concern now is what the president has indicated that he has constitutional concerns, but he has no problem with the content of the bill. Our problem as a Commission is, can the president speed up, whatever he will do to bring that bill to Parliament whether it is through the Attorney General, or however he intends to. The women cannot afford any further delay.”

Parliament has successfully passed the Criminal Offences Amendment Bill 2023, commonly referred to as the anti-witchcraft bill. The primary objective of this legislation is to criminalize attacks on individuals accused of being witches.

However, on November 27, 2023, the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, criticized President Akufo-Addo for not communicating his position on the bill to Parliament within the expected timeframe for review and assent.

In a letter sent to Parliament on Monday, December 4, President Akufo-Addo conveyed that he cannot provide his assent to the three bills, including the anti-witchcraft bill, until constitutional issues related to them are resolved.

You are being unprofessional – MP to GES over interdiction of SHS head teachers

Ranking Member on the Education Committee in Parliament, Peter Nortsu-Kotoe, has voiced criticism against the Ghana Education Service (GES) for its handling of allegations against 11 senior high school head teachers.

These educators have been interdicted on the grounds of allegedly charging unauthorized fees.

Mr. Kotoe has suggested that the GES could have managed the situation more effectively by ensuring a fair hearing for the accused head teachers before the decision to interdict them was made.

The legislator, who represents Akatsi North, expressed his dissatisfaction with the actions taken by the GES in this particular case.

“We are aware that firm instructions have been issued to the heads of the various senior high schools in the country, but I will say that they are working under certain conditions that make it difficult for them to deliver on their mandate. They might have erred, but I am not happy with the manner in which the Ghana Education Service has unprofessionally handled the matter. These are people working for you to help you pursue your agenda, so no matter what offense they commit, the first thing as an employer is to invite them and hear their side of the story.”

In a related development, four out of the seven head teachers in the Ashanti Region, who were interdicted for allegedly charging unauthorized fees, are scheduled to appear before a committee tasked with investigating the claims on December 12.

Fuel pumps to be labeled based on octane grades – NPA

Head of Quality Control at the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Ubeidalah Saeed, has announced that the Authority is sanctioning the labeling of petrol pumps based on their octane grades.

This decision comes in response to recent concerns about the quality of petrol sold at pumps. Ghanaians have reported damaged spark plugs, attributing the issues to substandard petrol in the market.

Saeed emphasized that there is no tainted petrol on the market but suggested that vehicle owners might be purchasing the wrong fuel for their cars.

He explained as follows; “There are a lot of things that causes a car to jerk; one critical thing is octane level. So when a car vehicle starts to jerk, your first option is to look at the octane level of the fuel.

“It costs about 500 dollars to test for octane so we started testing for octane and realised that all the petrol we’re testing were meeting the octane levels and each of these vehicles have a minimum octane level that the fuel should meet to enable optimal performance.

“And another important point is that every particular car is designed for a certain grade of fuel so in fact the NPA at our last management meeting has sanctioned that next year we’re going to label the pumps for petrol to grade them on octane levels.

“So Ghana we have two grades of petrol, RON 91 which is the red one and the new one which is green. So a lot of people will buy it and think that it’s diesel but that’s a high grade petrol called premium petrol which is RON 95 for high performing vehicles.”

  • Control child birth, Ghana is overcrowded – Kwame Pianim advises

Control child birth, Ghana is overcrowded – Kwame Pianim advises

Renowned economist Andrews Kwame Pianim has expressed the view that Ghana cannot achieve substantial economic growth given the current rate of population growth.

He highlighted that no country has ever achieved development with a population growth rate exceeding 2 percent. Kwame Pianim made these remarks during the 5th edition of the University of Professional Studies’ Annual Leadership Public Lecture.

He said “at the 2.12 per cent annual rate of growth of the population because our fertility level has continued high and mortality is declining, therefore constant at about 2 per cent or 2.1 per cent.

“If we continue, doing that, by 2057 we will have 69 million Ghanaians in this small place. See how crowded we are. It will overburden the free senior school system, the school system, and the university systems, lecturers will be lecturing 200. In the primary schools, we have 100 and 200 pupils.”

In supporting his argument, economist Andrews Kwame Pianim pointed to South Korea as an example. He highlighted that South Korea, facing a comparable population growth rate to Ghana in the 1950s, successfully transformed its economy within about 30 years by effectively managing its population growth.

He added; “We started with Korea which had 3 per cent [and] 3.5 per cent for us in the 1960s. They brought it down so drastically that they are now negative and are trying to encourage people to have more children.

“And we are still doing it. We cannot develop. No country has ever developed at 2% growth in population. And with an average woman having 6 children. We can’t do it. We need to modulate our population,” the economist emphasised.

The lecture was organized under the theme “Re-imagining Ghana’s Development Trajectory for Peaceful Prosperous Nation by 2057. Our 100th Anniversary through the Perspective of the People.”

The Annual Leadership Public Lecture at the University of Professional Studies aimed to encourage both the public and leaders to reconsider Ghana’s development path in light of the shortcomings of previous policies.

Players are ‘firmly behind’ Erik ten Hag – Scott McTominay

Scott McTominay has acknowledged that the atmosphere at Manchester United became toxic under recent managers but believes it is not repeating itself under Erik ten Hag.

The Dutchman is facing pressure as United has experienced a downturn in form, losing five of their last 10 matches.

McTominay, who played under various managers at United, including Jose Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, and Ralf Rangnick, thinks the atmosphere has improved under Ten Hag despite recent challenges, such as a 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth.

He said: “It is not the case like with some of the other managers where it has been a little bit toxic at times.

“The boys are firmly behind the manager and that is the be all and end all. I have said in many other interviews that it’s the way it will remain.

“We have got amazing coaching staff as well. It is the players’ responsibility first and foremost, the players know that as well.”

Scott McTominay acknowledges that Manchester United has experienced inconsistency this season, with notable wins against Everton and Chelsea but also concerning defeats. Despite the challenging results, McTominay is determined to repay the faith shown by manager Erik ten Hag. The midfielder is focused on helping the team regain its form and address the recent setbacks.

He added: “We are inconsistent as a team, we have not been naive to that.

“The schedule has been relentless but we can’t use that as an excuse. As a group we have to come together and find out the answers to that.

“In the life of a footballer you will always have ups and downs — it is not always sunshine and rainbows. I have had an opportunity and want to do what I can to support the team.”

Manchester United faces a crucial match against Bayern on Tuesday and must secure a victory while hoping for a draw between FC Copenhagen and Galatasaray to qualify for the last 16 of the Champions League. Failing to win would result in United not even qualifying for the Europa League.

Watch how Shalimar’s parents supported their daughter in court

The parents of the spokesperson of the political movement #TheNewForce, Shalimar Abbiusi, who was arrested by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) last week, made their way to the Kaneshie Court today.

They arrived with her lawyer, Francis-Xavier Sosu. It is unknown if they preceded Shalimar or not, who was escorted into court by two individuals who tried to prevent media personnel from taking photographs of the suspect.

Her parents held hands as a form of comfort as they went into the court premises after flying in from Belgium to Ghana.

Shalimar pleaded not guilty to obtaining a permit by false declaration when she appeared before the Kaneshie District Court today.

The New Force spokesperson was granted bail to the tune of GHC20,000 with sureties.

Ms. Shalimar Abbiusi, was picked up by the officers of the National Investigations Bureau (NIB) on Monday, December 4, 2023, for lack of evidence to prove her work permit and immigration documents as well as her affiliation with The New Force.

According to the New Force Movement, in a press statement dated December 7, the NIB has since last Monday been questioning Shalimar Abbiusi about the New Force and “wanting to know which people are behind it and if the people want to run for President.”

During this period, she is said to have been denied access to legal representation and has been held beyond the legal 48-hour limit without formal charges.

“Further, despite the objections of Ms Abbiusi’s lawyers, her apartment was broken into without a warrant and the place ransacked. Yet not a single element of incriminating evidence was found against her,” the statement added.

The New Force says it is “concerned” over the recent events since having a political organization is not a criminal offense.

“As such the arbitrary detention of Ms. Abbiusi raises serious concerns about the abuse of power, persecution of perceived political opponents and several human rights violations,” the movement added.

It has been revealed that despite the fact that Ms Abbiussi’s residence permit was facilitated and issued to her over three years ago by the Ghana Immigration Service, the authorities told a District Court that they have temporarily charged her with an offence claiming that one of the documents she submitted could not be verified.

They are therefore demanding that she be held in custody so that investigations into the New Force will continue.

Her parents have also raised concerns about the prolonged detention. They accused the security service of kidnapping their daughter and requested for her release.

The film documenting Taylor Swift’s acclaimed tour has earned a prestigious nomination at the 81st Golden Globe Awards in the category of Cinematic and Box-Office Achievement.

Competing with other 2023 box office successes, including Barbie, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, John Wick: Chapter 4, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, Oppenheimer, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, and The Super Mario Bros. Movie, The Eras Tour stands out as a top contender.

This nomination follows the tour’s exceptional success, breaking records as the highest-grossing concert film with earnings surpassing $1 billion. Taylor Swift, who took a break from the Eras Tour, surprised fans in August with the announcement of a concert film capturing the tour’s magical live performances.

The film initially premiered in theaters, providing audiences with a cinematic experience showcasing Swift’s dynamic stage presence and visually captivating production.

As a special birthday treat to her devoted fanbase, Swift took to Instagram to share her plans for a wider audience to enjoy The Eras Tour concert film. Ahead of her Dec. 13 birthday, she shared, “Hi! Well, so, basically I have a birthday coming up and I was thinking a fun way to celebrate the year we’ve had together would be to make The Eras Tour Concert Film available for you to watch at home!”

Despite Taylor Swift’s The Eras Tour film receiving a Golden Globe nomination, it appears that neither her project nor Beyoncé’s concert documentary “Renaissance” is eligible for consideration at the Academy Awards.

According to Variety, both documentaries cannot compete for an Oscar nomination in the documentary feature category or any technical categories under the current guidelines of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Additionally, neither “Eras” nor “Renaissance” was submitted for consideration by the October 2 deadline. The 81st Golden Globe Awards ceremony is scheduled for Sunday, January 7.

Capitol restaurant birthday backdrop not mine; Kwame Eugene made me use someone else’s – Former housekeeper

Kuami Eugene’s former househelp, Mary, has asserted that the widely circulated picture where she appeared in front of a birthday party backdrop was a staged photo opportunity orchestrated by her former employer.

In the midst of Mary’s social media allegations against Kuami Eugene, many criticized her, citing instances where Eugene took her to events and even threw a birthday celebration on her behalf.

Mary, addressing the specific birthday party, claimed in a recent interview with Der Mad King that the backdrop featured in her viral birthday picture did not belong to Kuami Eugene. According to her, during a casual visit to a restaurant with Eugene, they noticed the backdrop intended for another random birthday celebrant.

Mary alleged that Eugene then suggested she take advantage of the opportunity and pose for photos in front of the backdrop, which prominently displayed the words “Happy Birthday.”

These statements from Kuami Eugene’s former maid were made as she sought to counter accusations of ingratitude, emphasizing that the portrayed special treatment was not as genuine as it appeared.

“On that particular moment, when I stood by the balloon, we were at Capitol restaurant. Where I stood was someone’s birthday backdrop. The decoration wasn’t specifically set up for me. We went to the restaurant on a regular day to eat and he asked me to stand up and pose in front of the backdrop so it would look like it was meant for me. He said he wanted to take the picture and post it later on my birthday. Those saying I am ungrateful don’t know what really happens.

“The other time he said I watch TV a lot, so he carried it from the hall to his room. I heard It was during that period he went on a certain show and gave me a shoutout. I couldn’t hear or see anything until I was told. Because he took the TV away from the hall,” she stated.

  • Everton triumphs over Chelsea

    Everton triumphs over Chelsea

Everton secured a notable 2-0 victory over Chelsea at Goodison Park, capping off an impressive week of Premier League action.

Abdoulaye Doucoure’s second consecutive goal, eight minutes into the second half, and a goal from second-half substitute Lewis Dobbin sealed the win. The victory extended Everton’s lead over the relegation zone to four points.

James Garner returned to Sean Dyche’s starting XI, recovering from illness, while Amadou Onana returned from a calf injury, taking a place on the bench as Seamus Coleman dropped out due to a minor injury sustained in the previous match against Newcastle United.

Despite Chelsea having the first notable chance, with a shot from Enzo Fernandez well saved by Jordan Pickford, Everton responded with early pressure. Chelsea threatened again, but Pickford saved a powerful shot from Cole Palmer. The first half saw few chances, with Jack Harrison’s volley flashing wide being Everton’s closest attempt.

Jarrad Branthwaite went down with a potential injury scare, but he continued after receiving treatment. Ashley Young, however, appeared to be struggling and was replaced by Nathan Patterson.

In the second half, Everton increased their intensity, and McNeil’s powerful shot was tipped away by Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez. Doucoure capitalized on a rebound from Calvert-Lewin’s attempt, driving home a low shot to give Everton the lead.

Chelsea struggled to respond, with Raheem Sterling’s efforts contained by Everton’s defense, particularly Mykolenko. In stoppage time, Lewis Dobbin, a second-half substitute, secured Everton’s victory with a well-placed low strike from a corner.

The win marked Everton’s third successive Premier League victory, and their determined defensive display resulted in a third consecutive clean sheet. Mykolenko was praised for his stellar defensive performance, leading in tackles and clearances. Everton’s home form has improved, with only one loss in their past six matches at Goodison Park.

Actor Harold Amenyah revealed that he has received propositions from individuals suggesting a threesome involving him and his wife.

He clarified that his earlier comment on television about being open to a threesome was taken out of context.

Amenyah emphasized that he is not willing to participate in a threesome and wanted to set the record straight regarding his previous statement.

“No threesome is coming on. It was taken out of context. It wasn’t something that I was pushing for it to happen. I was asked that before marriage, what haven’t I done before and I said that was one of the things I didn’t do.

It wasn’t an interview, it was a relationship show. It was taken out of context because when I did the show, it was three or four days after it started. It started somewhere and I don’t know how many people have had time to sit and watch,” he said on Accra-based UTV.

He added, “The number of people who have contacted me that they will be interested is overwhelming. We live in a very hypocritical society. DM and in town, all over. They ask me what qualities we are looking for, can you imagine? Something that I said, people have taken it seriously and I’m even shocked”.

Teach our children how to properly handle public property and funds – Joe Wise to Education Minister

First Deputy Speaker, Joseph Osei Owusu, has called on the Education Minister, Dr Osei Adutwum, to address the lack of values and unpatriotism among students of the various cycles in the education sector.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament, Mr Osei Owusu noted that the crop of students churning out of schools does not exhibit any virtue that suggests that they are willing to protect and preserve the country.

According to the Bekwai MP, they embezzle public funds and destroy public properties, and this could be due to the lack of mechanisms put in place to inculcate in them the spirit of patriotism.

“How do we add value to our children who go through our educational system. By the time we leave school, we are not loyal to our country. We are dishonest and often careless about public property. I don’t know how we can inculcate that in our education system but if you ask me Mr Speaker, it is something that is lacking, missing.”

Joe Wise stressed that “in a properly organized educational system, every product of the school must demonstrate that you can trust him or her with public property.”

“Unfortunately, I don’t see any such thing in our educational system, from nursery through to the university,” he added.

He therefore entreated Parliament to urge “the Educational management system to rethink what we call education and focus education on building people’s integrity, loyalty to the country, and building people who value what is in our earth”.

  • GHC2,212! – Amount first-year students are paying for admission to Ola Girls SHS despite Free SHS

GHC2,212! – Amount first-year students are paying for admission to Ola Girls SHS despite Free SHS

On Monday, December 4, Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) graduates were instructed by the Ghana Education Service (GES) to report to their various Senior High Schools they were admitted to, despite concerns from parents over the brief span to prepare.

Since enrolment began a week ago, some parents and guardians have expressed concerns over the list of items they are to pay before their wards are enrolled.

Information reaching The Independent Ghana from deep-throat sources indicates that parents whose wards have been admitted to Ola Girls SHS are expected to pay over GHC2,210 in order to have their children enrolled.

There are 10 items parents are to ensure they check before their wards are enrolled, per reports on social media, which have been corroborated by our sources.

The management of the school is charging GHC500 for uniform, GHC390 for anniversary cloth, GHC242 for PTA Levy, GHC300 for extra classes, GHC300 for feeding support, GHC300 anniversary levy, GHC50 for school hymnal, GHC60 for house jersey, GHC for house bedsheet and GHC10 for packing fee.

A guardian who engaged The Independent Ghana admitted to paying for these items before his ward was enrolled.

He furnished the media house with receipts, which can be found below.

The exorbitant fees being charged amidst the Free Senior High School (SHS), which is to allow students in secondary cycle institutions for free, as well as some items being demanded, have sparked concerns on social media.

Users have questioned the relevance of the anniversary levy as well as the packing fee.

Others believe this is a channel head teachers are employing to rake in more revenue to help in the day-to-day running of the school as government has not been able to meet all of their demands.

This information comes at a time when a total of 11 headteachers have been interdicted by the Ghana Education Service (GES) for imposing unapproved fees during the enrolment of first-year students in their institutions.

Seven headteachers in Senior High Schools (SHSs) across the Ashanti Region have been directed to step aside for this alleged misconduct.

In press statements, the GES announced the initiation of investigations into the actions of the implicated headteachers. The affected individuals include Mrs. Selina Anane Afoakwa (Headmistress of Kumasi Girls SHS), Mr. Nataniel Asamoah (Headmaster of Asanteman SHS), Mr. Andrews Boateng (Headmaster of Kumasi Senior High Technical School), and Mr. Kwadwo Obeng-Appiah (Headmaster of Manso-Edubia SHS). Additionally, Mr. Daniel Boamah Duku (Headmaster of Agric Nzema Community SHS), Ms. Gladys Sarfowah (Headmistress of Nkawie Senior High Technical School), and Mr. Ampong Ahmed Omar (Headmaster of Collins SHS) are part of the list.

The GES accuses these headteachers of charging students various unapproved fees, including payments for house dues, books, calculators, admission processes, printing of slips and files, and hymn books.

This action follows similar interdictions of headteachers in the Greater Accra and Eastern regions for unauthorized sales of items to students. Mr. Afi Yaw Stephen, Headmaster of Berekum Senior High School, and Mr. Joseph Jilinjeh Abudu, Headmaster of Odomaseman Senior High School, were directed to step aside for selling items not approved by education authorities.

Mr. Afi Yaw Stephen faced allegations of charging unauthorized fees such as “Borla fees,” “motivation fees,” and “lunch bag” charges. Meanwhile, Mr. Joseph Jilinjeh Abudu was accused of charging students GHC45 for hymn books, SRC fees, brown khaki, and other unapproved items.

Headteachers of O’Reilly Senior High School and Ghana Senior High School, Nadia Lartechoe Annan and Patience Naki Mensah, respectively, were suspended for unauthorized activities, including the collection of admission fees and the sale of ceremonial cloth, tracksuits, and other items to incoming Form One students.

In response to these incidents, President of the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), Angel Carbonu, issued a stern warning to headteachers nationwide, urging them to adhere to the government’s policy prohibiting the sale of items to students within school premises.

First Deputy Speaker, Joseph Osei Owusu, has urged the Education Minister, Dr. Osei Adutwum, to address the issues of values and unpatriotism among students in the education sector.

Speaking in Parliament, Mr. Osei Owusu expressed concern that the current generation of students graduating from schools lacks virtues that demonstrate a willingness to protect and preserve their country.

The Member of Parliament for Bekwai pointed out that some students engage in activities such as embezzling public funds and destroying public properties.

He suggested that the absence of mechanisms to instill the spirit of patriotism in students could be contributing to these behaviors.

“How do we add value to our children who go through our educational system. By the time we leave school, we are not loyal to our country. I wouldn’t want to be an actress in today’s Hollywood – Angelina Jolie expresses regret

Angelina Jolie has revealed in a recent interview with the Wall Street Journal Magazine that if she were starting out in the entertainment industry today, she would not pursue a career as an actress.

This statement was just one of the revelations shared by the star in an article titled “Angelina Jolie Is Rebuilding Her Life.”

In the interview, Jolie discussed various aspects of her life, including the process of “healing” after her split from Brad Pitt and her future plans. She also touched on her sentiments regarding the town that played a pivotal role in her becoming a star.

The interview provides insights into Jolie’s reflections on her career, personal life, and the evolving landscape of the entertainment industry.

“I grew up in quite a shallow place,” Jolie said of Hollywood. “Of all the places in the world, Hollywood is not a healthy place. So you seek authenticity.”

The daughter of actor Jon Voight, Jolie, told the publication, “Because I grew up around Hollywood, I was never very impressed with it. I never bought into it as significant or important.”

If she had the choice to break into the entertainment industry today, she probably wouldn’t pursue a career as an actress.

“I wouldn’t be an actress today,” she said, with the caveat that perhaps she would have done theater, but not Hollywood. “When I was starting out, it wasn’t as much of an expectation to be as public, to share so much.”

Angelina Jolie has faced increased scrutiny, partially stemming from her divorce filing seven years ago from Brad Pitt, with whom she shares six children. In the aftermath of the divorce, Jolie has notably reduced her professional commitments and has primarily focused on being at home with her children.

Angelina and Brad Bitt in Mr and Mrs Smith

“We had to heal,” she said of her family. “There are things we needed to heal from.”

She understands the interest in her life. At one point she and Pitt were a golden couple in the industry.

“Since I was young, people liked the part of me that’s pretty tough and maybe a bit wild—that’s the part that I think people enjoy,” Jolie said. “I’m not the one [who] you want to hear about my pain or my sadness. You know, that’s not entertaining.”

Angelina Jolie, known for her humanitarian work and her versatility in various settings, has expressed her intention to eventually move away from Los Angeles. Instead, she plans to spend more time at her home in Cambodia.

“It’s part of what happened after my divorce,” Jolie said. “I lost the ability to live and travel as freely. I will move when I can.”

Spokesperson of the political movement #TheNewForce, Shalimar Abbiusi, who was arrested by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) last week, is appearing before the Kaneshie District Court today.

In a video shared by UTV, Shalimar who arrived in a white vehicle was escorted into court premises by two individuals who tried to prevent media personnel from taking photographs of the suspect.

NDC is facing imminent extinction in North East Region because of Bawumia – NPP

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the North East Region has suggested that the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) is facing potential extinction following the election of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the NPP’s flagbearer.

According to the NPP, the NDC in the region is rapidly losing its influence as members are reportedly leaving the NDC in large numbers to join the NPP.

During a press conference in Nalerigu on Sunday, addressed by the North East Regional Communications Director, Amos Walibe, the NPP urged the NDC to refrain from attacking Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia if they wish to preserve their party’s presence in the region.

“…Which is that, it was an attempt at halting the speedy dwindling fortunes of the NDC in the Northeast region. It has become abundantly clear that the NDC in the North East Region is facing an imminent extinction following the election of the Vice President Alhaji Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as the flagbearer of the NPP,” he said.

The press conference was called in response to what the NPP characterized as lies told by the NDC during their previous press conference, where they accused Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of neglecting his kinsmen. The NPP demanded that the NDC issue an unqualified apology for their allegations.

Faced with this stark reality, according to Amos, the leadership of the NDC in the region “hurriedly organized that shambolic press conference seeking to give hope to the few remaining NDC members in the region so that they do not also follow suit. If not, why will the NDC be calling the Vice President a failure as if he is the President?

The NPP asserted that, unlike Vice President Dr. Bawumia, who played a role in the creation of a new region, former President Mahama failed twice to fulfill similar requests from the people of Gonjaland during his term in office.

“It is on record that the good people of the Gonjaland longed for a region long before H.E John Dramani Mahama came into the political limelight. So, it was all joy when H.E John Dramani Mahama was picked in 2008 as the running mate to then-candidate Professor Atta Mills.

“And Mr Mahama assured his people that he would ensure that they got the region they were yearning for if they voted for Professor Mills to win the 2008 elections. He failed to deliver on his promise after four years in office as Vice President and another two years as President, respectfully.”

The NPP rejected the NDC’s assertion that the government had not initiated any significant capital investment projects in the region. The Communication Director, during the press conference, strongly emphasized that the NPP consistently outperformed the NDC in the region.

Addressing concerns about incomplete projects, including the Walewale Watermelon Juice Processing Company, the Communications Officer assured that the government was dedicated to completing all initiated projects in the region. T

Tottenham beat New Castle by four goals to one

In their 10th consecutive game, Tottenham Hotspur scored the first goal and secured a victory, breaking a pattern of letting leads slip in previous matches.

Destiny Udogie opened the scoring in the 26th minute, and Tottenham extended their lead with a brace from Richarlison before Heung-Min Son added a late goal from the penalty spot. However, a clean sheet was denied in injury time as Joelinton scored for Newcastle.

Both teams had early chances, with Richarlison’s fifth-minute effort earning a corner, and Bruno Guimaraes narrowly missing the target at the other end. Anthony Gordon’s cross aimed for Alexander Isak was expertly defended by Ben Davies.

Despite Cristian Romero’s header being cleared off the line by Miguel Almiron, Udogie broke the deadlock by tapping home Son’s dangerous cross.

Tottenham continued to threaten in attack, with Son and Kulusevski creating opportunities, and Richarlison doubled the lead after Son’s skillful play. Brennan Johnson and Isak had chances for Newcastle, but the visitors struggled to contain Tottenham’s attacking intensity.

In the second half, despite Newcastle showing more intent, Tottenham sealed the victory with a third goal. Porro provided a delightful pass to Richarlison, who scored from close range. Tottenham had several near misses, hitting the post and the woodwork, but Son converted a penalty in the 84th minute to make it 4-0.

Although substitute Oliver Skipp’s close-range effort was saved and Son narrowly missed, Newcastle managed to grab a stoppage-time consolation goal through Joelinton after Tottenham lost possession near their area. The match ended 4-1, with Tottenham claiming maximum points.

Nathaniel Bassey didn’t prophesy, he gave a business idea – Socrate Safo

Ghanaian director and filmmaker Socrate Safo has dismissed the notion that Nigerian gospel singer Nathaniel Bassey’s comments urging Ghanaian artists to compose more songs in English were prophetic.

Speaking on the United Showbiz show on UTV, Safo, Socrate Safo who serves as the Director for Creative Arts at the National Commission on Culture, disagreed with gospel artist Celestine Donkor‘s interpretation that Bassey’s remarks held prophetic significance.

According to Safo, Bassey’s advice was more of a common business suggestion than a prophetic message. He emphasized that the decision to switch languages in music is a practical business move, and he would not criticize anyone for making such decisions.

“What Nathaniel Bassey said is not a prophecy, it is just ordinary business advice. Don’t garnish it with the word “Prophetic” it is just common sense.

“In business, there is a primary market and a secondary market. Media houses like UTV or PeaceFM produce their content in Twi because their primary market is Ghanaians who speak Twi. There is nothing bad in satisfying the primary market first.

“I see nothing wrong with someone doing songs solely in Twi because he/she may have studied the market and decided that doing songs in Twi is best. Same way if you want to go international and you

“In the same way, there is nothing wrong if another artiste wants to appeal to the secondary market by doing songs in English. It’s just business,” he said.

Nathaniel Bassey’s advice to Ghanaian gospel artists during the Jesus Christ Encounter event at the Accra Sports Stadium on December 2, advocating for singing in English to reach a global audience, stirred a debate on the use of language in music. Bassey expressed his hope that Ghanaian gospel artists would host concerts in Nigeria and other countries in the future.

The comments sparked discussions about whether singing in English is essential for international success or if artists should prioritize other languages that resonate with local audiences. Opinions varied, with some arguing that singing in English is not necessary and that artists should stay true to their cultural roots. On the other hand, supporters of Bassey’s advice claimed that using English could enhance the international appeal of Ghanaian gospel songs.

Ghanaian director and filmmaker Socrate Safo has waded into the controversy surrounding Nigerian gospel singer Nathaniel Bassey who recently urged Ghanaian artists to compose more songs in English to reach a global audience.

According to Mr Safo, although Nathaniel Bassey’s advice is business-based, the main objective is for one to scrutinise his or her surroundings to provide the audience with what they demand. He noted that, whether it be English or Twi songs, one would have to meet the demands.

“I see nothing wrong with someone doing songs solely in Twi because he/she may have studied the market and decided that doing songs in Twi is best. Same way if you want to go international and you

Fulham show West Ham who is boss

Fulham completed a successful week by securing a comprehensive 5-0 victory over West Ham on Sunday. Raúl opened the scoring, followed by goals from Willian and Tosin before halftime.

Harry Wilson then netted a stunning goal to make it four, and Carlos Vinicius added the fifth, marking Fulham’s second 5-0 win in five days.

In this match, manager Marco Silva fielded an unchanged XI for the first time this season. The only alteration was on the bench, where Rodrigo Muniz returned after a brief injury spell.

The game started quietly, with limited chances for both teams. James Ward-Prowse tested Bernd Leno with a trademark free-kick, and Jarrod Bowen had a snapshot that Leno handled well. Alex Iwobi, buoyed by his recent brace, attempted a long-range shot that missed the target.

Fulham’s best opportunity came when a well-executed combination between Willian and Raúl allowed Willian to penetrate the opposition defense, but his shot lacked a clean connection, and Lukasz Fabianski made the save.

The deadlock was broken in the 22nd minute through a brilliant team effort. João Palhinha won the ball back with a robust challenge, initiated a sequence of play, and eventually delivered a superb cross to Raúl, who expertly guided the header into the net.

Following a goal-filled performance on Wednesday, Fulham continued their goal-scoring spree by adding a second on the day. Andreas Pereira played a key role in recycling the ball after Alex Iwobi’s shot was parried. His cross, taking a deflection off Iwobi, found Willian at the back post, who effortlessly placed his shot into the bottom corner.

Despite a late attempt by Jarrod Bowen in the first half, Fulham further extended their lead before the break. Tosin rose highest to nod in a precise corner from Andreas, making it three goals to the good.

The second half saw a substitution, with Harry Wilson replacing the injured Willian just before halftime. Fulham continued their attacking prowess, with Wilson nearly adding a fourth with a smart swivel in the box.

Shortly thereafter, Wilson scored a spectacular goal, cutting inside from the right and curling a shot into the top corner from outside the box.

Bowen had another attempt against the run of play, but Bernd Leno made a calm save. Carlos Vinicius secured the fifth goal for Fulham with a couple of minutes left on the clock, tapping home after receiving an unselfish square pass from Wilson. The 5-0 victory marked another dominant performance for Fulham.

“Hollywood is not a healthy place” – Angelina Jolie

Ghana Free Zones, German Cooperation procure electric bus to enhance e-mobility and green economy

The German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation, under its Invest for Jobs Initiative, has generously gifted a 58-passenger capacity electric bus (comprising 38 seats and 20 standing capacity) to the Ghana Free Zones Authority (GFZA).

This electric bus is specifically intended to offer an efficient and environmentally friendly transportation solution for employees and visitors within the Tema Export Processing Zone (TEPZ).

Beyond its functional role, the electric bus also serves the purpose of minimizing carbon emissions and advancing sustainability initiatives in the area.

“Today is a win for Ghana and Germany. This initiative does not only represent our efforts towards a more environmentally responsible and sustainable form of transportation but also our dedication to a better, cleaner future that goes hand-in-hand with the significant industrialization and the creation of decent jobs that we seek to achieve,” explained Country Director of GIZ Ghana Dr. Dirk Aβmann.

Receiving the key to the bus, the deputy CEO of GFZA, Kate Abbeo, noted that a feasibility study conducted within the TEPZ identified employee mobility, training and unavailability of canteen as significant challenges of the enclave which covers about 1200 acres of land.

To ease the movement of the employees, she noted that the Authority has constructed a bus stop and map out bus route within the enclave.

With regards to training, she stated that the Authority has provided training for 1,780 out of 2000 targeted employees. The training was focused on customer service, African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), dealing with fire hazards among others.

She stated that the Authority has also received estimates from contractors awaiting review to enable them (GFZA) to establish about three satellite canteens for the employees within the enclave.

The launch of the electric bus aligns with GIZ’s objective of fostering a cleaner and more sustainable environment, according to the representative. Emphasizing the pivotal role transportation plays in daily life, he highlighted the significance of transitioning to electric vehicles as a tangible and impactful measure in reducing carbon footprint.

The representative from GIZ expressed optimism about scaling up such initiatives in the future, citing the government of Ghana’s demonstrated commitment to promoting e-mobility, as outlined in the 2024 Budget.

The United Nations Environment Programme reports that Ghana’s transport sector contributes significantly to energy-related emissions, accounting for 47.7%.

To address this, voluntary commitments are anticipated to reduce emissions by approximately 15% by the year 2030. Achieving Ghana’s electric mobility goals will require a combination of supportive government policies, collaborations with the private sector, and strategic investments from international development.

The Invest for Jobs initiative, under the “Decent Work for a Just Transition” Special Initiative, collaborates closely with the Ministry of Trade and Industry, the Ghana Free Zones Authority, and private sector partners such as LMI Holdings. The primary objective of this joint project is to enhance conditions within the Free Zones enclave, making it more appealing to investors.

  • More than 30% of anaesthetists have left for greener pastures, many more set to leave – GACRA

More than 30% of anaesthetists have left for greener pastures, many more set to leave – GACRA

The Ghana Association of Certified Registered Anaesthetists (GACRA) has reported a significant challenge, noting that more than 30 percent of its members have emigrated in search of better opportunities in 2023.

This alarming figure includes hardworking, skilled, and experienced professional Certified Registered Anaesthetists (CRAs), leading to increased stress on those who remain in their positions.

Addressing the matter at the fifth Annual General Meeting (AGM) and Scientific Conference of the GACRA in Bolgatanga, Mr. James Nwisangra, the President of GACRA, expressed concern about the potential worsening of the situation, highlighting the adverse impact on the practice of anaesthesia.

The event’s theme was “Sustaining the practice of anaesthesia in Ghana amidst the brain drain; policy direction and regulation.”

“I am told many, including some present in the conference, have intentions of leaving.”

Mr. James Nwisangra, President of the Ghana Association of Certified Registered Anaesthetists (GACRA), identified several factors contributing to the exodus of skilled anaesthetists from the country. These factors include the lack of career progression, poor conditions of service, wrongful placement on the Single Spine Salary Scale, absence of a scheme of service, and regulatory challenges.

Highlighting the significance of the issue, Mr. Nwisangra noted that there are approximately 1200 Certified Registered Anaesthetists (CRAs) in Ghana, providing essential services to a population of over 32 million people.

Regarding the significance of their role in healthcare delivery, the representative highlighted that their specialty encompasses the critical task of resuscitating individuals who are sick, injured, critically ill, newborns, and those in intensive care units.

“This can only be done by the trained anaesthesia provider that is the CRA or the Anesthesiologist and not any other person. All emergency situations in our health institutions are centred on the Anaesthetist,” he emphasized.

Mr. Nwisangra, who has been re-elected as the President of the Association for another four-year term during the conference, voiced his concern regarding the subpar conditions of service experienced by the members. This includes issues such as the lack of accommodation and insufficient equipment at workplaces, among other challenges.

He informed that the Ghana Association of Certified Registered Anaesthetists (GACRA) had submitted a comprehensive conditions of service document to the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) and is currently awaiting negotiations. Despite both parties having signed the rules of engagement, Mr. Nwisangra expressed dissatisfaction with the undue delay in the negotiation process.

“FWSC, the employer and stakeholders should speed up the process to enable us to have improved conditions of service for the CRA.”

Mr. Nwisangra also pointed out that the Association had observed a notable increase in diseases such as cancer, kidney, and liver cases in Ghana, which were not previously common among the population.

Research indicates that these diseases are linked to pollution and contamination of rivers and water bodies resulting from illegal mining activities, the use of uncontrolled chemicals on farms, substance abuse, and the high consumption of alcohol and drugs by the youth.

In response to these health concerns, the Association called on the government to take practical measures to control illegal mining and the use of toxic chemicals on farmlands to safeguard the health of citizens.

Dr. Samuel Kwabena Boagye-Boateng, the Upper East Regional Director of the Ghana Health Service, conveyed in a speech read on his behalf that the conference’s theme was highly pertinent and timely, particularly in light of the increasing emigration of health professionals seeking better opportunities abroad.

He emphasized the potential severe consequences on the health status of the population if this trend is not addressed. Dr. Boagye-Boateng also acknowledged the crucial roles of anaesthetists in ensuring quality healthcare delivery.

“The migration of anaesthetists and other health professionals to other countries in search of better conditions of service should be a cause of worry for all people living in Ghana, and if this is not checked or minimized, will affect access to quality healthcare, which will impact negatively on our health status,” he said.

Be careful when plying Mankessim-Winneba junction – Police to motorists

The Regional Police Command has identified the Winneba-Mankessim stretch, spanning approximately 49.9 kilometers along the Accra-Cape Coast Highway, as the most perilous road in the Central Region.

The authorities attribute the alarming rate of accidents during the 48-minute drive on this section to the poor quality of the road and frequent violations of road safety regulations by drivers.

Despite ongoing efforts such as sustained road safety education, speed checks, and police snap checks at strategic points, the situation remains a significant concern.

“Our challenge is that anytime Christmas is approaching, people are hesitant and afraid to travel because of road accidents,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Charles Kofi Adu, the Central Regional Commander, said.

“Our problem in the Central Region has been the stretch between Apam-Mankessim that has become an accident-prone area.”

DCOP Adu conveyed this message during a speech presented on his behalf at the Central Regional Coordinating Council meeting, which aimed to review past events and devise strategies for expedited development.

The gathering included metropolitan, municipal, and district chief executives, presiding members, heads of decentralized departments and agencies, traditional and religious authorities, security agencies, and members of the media.

Despite highlighting the concerning state of the Winneba-Mankessim stretch on the Accra-Cape Coast Highway, DCOP Adu assured attendees that the Motor Transport and Traffic Directorate (MTTD) in Cape Coast and Mankessim had heightened patrols to address the situation.

Furthermore, the Command has launched a road safety management strategy named “Traffic Check Ghana” with the goal of enhancing road safety education for commuters.

“Police officers will be on duty, particularly along the stretch before, during and after the Christmas festivities to maintain law and order,” he said.

DCOP Adu emphasized that the police would concentrate their efforts on deploying personnel to commercial centers and various public spaces. Additionally, they would be vigilant in monitoring state assets to ensure security and public order.

That was to ensure the safety and security of humans, communities, institutions, marketplaces, commercial centres, beaches, streets, churches, recreational centres, and hospitals, among other areas.

“There will be police physical presence at all the places to deter criminals. We are using foot and mobile patrols day and night,” he said. “The police have made public safety a top priority and will go all out to ensure that people feel safe as they go about their legitimate businesses during the festive season.”

DCOP Emmanuel Teye-Cudjoe, the Central North Regional Commander, characterized the Assin Fosu area as “relatively peaceful” and advised everyone to observe caution while celebrating the festivities.

He highlighted the effectiveness of police interventions, emphasizing that their success depended on the collaboration between law enforcement and the public.

DCOP Teye-Cudjoe stressed that effective crime prevention and detection relied on a shared responsibility between the police and the community they served, underscoring the importance of public support in maintaining the area’s peace.

“While the police, with the support of the other security agencies, strive to guarantee the safety and security of everyone, it is important to note that personal security is the responsibility of every individual,” DCOP Teye-Cudjoe said.

“Individuals are to be alert and conscious of happenings in their environment and neighbourhood. Neighbours must be one another’s keepers and report every suspicious criminal activity to the police for prompt action.”

DCOP Owusu Bempah, the Deputy Commander of the Central East Command, debunked the security myth associated with Kasoa as a crime-prone area. He highlighted that strategic security interventions had successfully demystified this perception.

While acknowledging that the area had faced challenges related to chieftaincy and land guard issues over the years, DCOP Owusu Bempah assured the public that the situation was now under control.

He urged residents to live in peace and reassured them that the police would continue their routine duties to enhance security in the area.

298 new HIV infections recorded in Ashaiman municipality in 2023 – Health Service Director

The Ashaiman Municipality has reported 298 new cases of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infections between January and October 2023.

The Director of Health Services for the Ashaiman Municipality, Mrs. Patience Ami Mamattah, revealed that out of the 298 new infections, 116 were males, and 182 were females.

Additionally, a total of 90 pregnant women tested HIV-positive during this period, with 86 successfully put on treatment.

Mrs. Mamattah emphasized the importance of HIV awareness creation and screening at public gatherings to combat stigmatization and discrimination against individuals living with HIV.

Mrs Mamattah “Someone living with HIV is just like you. Do not point fingers at persons living with HIV.”

The Director of Health Services for the Ashaiman Municipality emphasized the importance of knowing one’s HIV status, highlighting that quality of life is assured with the availability of treatment for those testing positive for HIV.

She urged pregnant women to willingly undergo testing and adhere to medications to prevent transmitting the virus to their unborn babies.

Additionally, she encouraged the public to practice safe sex by following the ‘ABC’ approach—abstaining, being with one partner, or using condoms—to protect against HIV.

Ghana cannot celebrate lithium deal yet – Bright Simons

Honorary Vice President of IMANI-Africa, Bright Simons, has expressed concerns about the Minerals Income and Investment Fund (MIIF) being overly enthusiastic about its role in the lithium deal.

He questions the fund’s self-congratulatory stance on what it describes as significant capital gains from the proposed investment in the lithium deal.

Mr Simons suggests that the high enthusiasm raises questions about the analysis conducted regarding the price trend of lithium.

Explaining his point on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, Bright Simons said, “For instance they make the argument that they’ve already started to make significant capital gains appreciation on the investment they’ve promised to make and it’s not clear yet whether they’ve already signed the documents and therefore they own this six percent contributing interest in Ewoyaa and the three percent in the holding company.

“But they’re now saying that because at some point in time the price moved from 26 cents to 34 cents they’ve already made money. That’s not how you do this analysis. You’d have to take into account the price over a longer period of time to see whether or not these are trends you can bank on because already that share price has dropped to 27 cents so the 26 to 34 is no longer even valid, already the price has dropped.”

Bright Simons expressed concern about the Minerals Income and Investment Fund (MIIF) showing excessive enthusiasm regarding its role in the lithium deal. He highlighted that the MIIF’s self-congratulatory stance on potential significant capital gains from the proposed investment in the lithium deal raises questions about the analysis made regarding the lithium price trend.

Simons emphasized that the enthusiasm may be premature, especially considering the recent significant drops in lithium prices and the corresponding decline in the share price of Atlantic Lithium, the parent company of Barari DV. He cautioned that this trend could impact Ghana’s investment in the company in the future if it continues.

“And as the price of the raw material keeps dropping the share price of Atlantic Lithium will also keep dropping at some point so it’s not clear why they do that. Already this is a company that has lost half of its market value since it was established. It moved from about 342 million dollars to about 168 million dollars, so if you’re investing in it you don’t become so self-congratulatory.

“I’m not saying that there’s a problem with the investment, I’m just saying that it’s too early to be prematurely celebrating,” he said.

He added that “It could well be that this is a great coup because of what we are all aware of about the transition so lithium is going to be big. If lithium is big, Atlantic Lithium is going to be big. But my argument is that we have not seen that yet.

“So to already say that you have already seen massive appreciation I think is just propagandist and for a sovereign wealth fund you should be extremely conservative.”

PPA boss’ daughter burnt as house catches fire

Fire has engulfed the home of Professor Christopher Ameyaw Akumfi, the Board Chairman of the Public Procurement Authority (PPA), in Techiman, destroying properties estimated at several hundred thousand Ghana Cedis.

The incident occurred on December 9, 2023, leaving the professor’s daughter in her 30s with severe burn injuries.

Professor Ameyaw Akumfi was not at home during the incident, as he was reportedly attending a funeral.

Preliminary investigations indicate that there was an explosion in one of the rooms, leading to thick smoke and a subsequent fire. The daughter suffered severe burn injuries and was taken to the Holy Family Hospital in Techiman.

“No a single property was saved from the house. Onlookers only managed to push one of the vehicles to safety but the whole building has been reduced to ashes”, an aide to the PPA Board Chairman told MyNewsGh.com.

According to him, the cause of the fire is unknown.
