  • You will vote for me if you read my transformation plan – Alan to Ghanaians

Leader for the Movement for Change, John Alan Kyerematen, has indicated that his quest to becoming president of the Republic is hinged on one condition.

In an interview on TV3 on Wednesday, the former Trade Minister notes that his presidency is assured only if Ghanaians take time out of their busy schedules to be abreast of his Great Transformational Plan (GTP).

Some issues his GTP hopes to address include indiscipline, disrespect for the rule of law, and arrogance of power.

“I’ve six areas of behavioral change that I’ve proposed under my GTP. But the lack of discipline is so pervasive.

Disrespect for the rule of law. This is another one. Arrogance of power. It is not just politicians. People at different level. You go to a government agency and somehow people think that they are doing you a favour. I’ve scoped all that out in my blue print. It is a great plan.”

He therefore said: “If people would just listen to me and read my plan, they will make me President.”

The GTP is anchored on these pillars:

    1. Building a strong macroeconomic environment which will be characterized by a stable currency, low inflation, sustainable debt levels, revenue optimization, tight expenditure control, low competitive interest rates, strong external reserves, backed by high levels of liquidity to support the financial sector.

    2. Introduce a New Agricultural Revolution (NAR) for Ghana, which will first take advantage of both local, regional and global markets; Secondly, be driven by technology, innovation and cutting-edge research; Thirdly, optimize value for farmers through value chains; and fourthly promote economies of scale through large scale commercial farming.

    3. Promoting Industrial Transformation through value addition and the establishment of strategic anchor industries to diversify the Ghanaian economy. This will also involve the establishment of Industrial Parks and Special Economic Zones, as well as the aggressive promotion of Small and Medium Scale enterprise development.

    4. Accelerated Infrastructure Development: Promoting Private sector financing for public infrastructure such as Roads, Railways, Ports and Harbours, Water Supply Systems, Public Housing etc. This will reduce Government’s exposure to the financing of such infrastructure projects.

    5. Digital Mainstreaming: Mainstreaming digitalization in all Government and Public sector activities, and bringing digital technologies to the doorstep of the ordinary Ghanaian.

    6. Energy Security and Diversification: placing greater emphasis on the development of renewable sources of energy, including but not limited to nuclear and hydrogen energy. This will require fast-tracking the execution of Government’s energy transition strategy.

    7. Health: Expanding Health infrastructure and services by enhancing private sector participation in health service delivery across the country, as well improving the viability of the National Health Insurance Scheme.

    8. Education: Undertaking a comprehensive review of existing reforms in the educational sector, particularly the Free SHS programme to ensure optimum efficiency and effectiveness in its implementation. Government will pay special attention to institutionalizing the link between industry, academia and educational institutions, and reinforce the importance of apprenticeship and internship. Considering the critical importance of early childhood development, a major thrust of Government’s new interventions in the educational sector, will be to improve basic education in all its form and nature, including but not limited to physical infrastructure, learning facilities, teacher training and curriculum development.

    9. Tourism: Encouraging private sector investments in the development of world class tourism infrastructure, and also taking steps to leverage the tourism potential in each district and region of Ghana. In addition, my Government will facilitate air travel for tourists coming into the country by providing free visas including Visas on arrival. Finally, the development of the creative industry in Ghana will be the backbone of the new reforms in the tourism industry. This will include but not be limited to impactful reforms in the following creative industries; Film, Dance, Theatre, Music, Literature and Multimedia Arts.

    10. Natural Resource Management: Developing and implementing a comprehensive programme for the management of Ghana’s Natural resources. This will include but not be limited to Oil & Gas; Solid Minerals; Water & Marine resources; and Land and Forest resources. As a target, there shall be no export of raw materials from Ghana in any form or nature, without a minimum of 60% value addition by the year 2030. This will usher in Ghana’s decade of industrial transformation, spanning the year 2025 to 2035.

    11. Decarbonization and Climate Resilience: Scaling up Government’s current efforts at reducing Ghana’s carbon footprints and facilitating access to the carbon trading markets, as well as establishing mechanisms to strengthen the country’s preparedness against the negative effects of climate change and climate variability.

    12. National Security and Defence Optimization: Deploying resources to strengthen National Security and Defence Mechanisms and Infrastructure, to deal substantively with emerging security threats and challenges, particularly in the Sahalian region.

    13. Downsizing Government: Overhauling the architecture of the public service in Ghana by consolidating some existing Ministries, Departments, and Agencies. This will lead to a lean Government structure that will ensure operational efficiency and effectiveness in the delivery of Government services, and also reduce cost to the National Budget.

    14. Strategic Engagement with the International Community: Restructuring Ghana’s diplomatic and economic relations with the International Community, based on the principle of ‘positive neutrality’, with a focus on promoting the strategic interests of Ghana, as well as our shared commitment to humanity and the preservation of peace around the world.

    15. Sports: Investing in world class new generation sports facilities in selected competitive sporting disciplines. In this regard, Government will encourage the participation of the private sector in the development of sports infrastructure around the country, including sports academies.

  • I gave GHC500,000 to NPP to organize a credible voter album, but they wasted it – Alan

Former presidential aspirant for the New Patriotic Party, Alan Kyerematen has noted that he gave an amount of GHS500,000 to the party to ensure the creation of a genuine voter album ahead of the NPP primaries.

However, the money given, he said, was not used for the intended purpose as the voter album lacked credibility.

He made this revelation during an interview on UTV following his resignation from the ruling party.

“When we started this election, 10 people aspired for the flagbearership position, I said when this election is not fair, there will be issues. It is fair, no one would have any issues. So to ensure fairness, ensure that the album to be used for election is genuine and has no challenge. I paid half a million Ghana Cedis, GHS500,000 which could have been used to support someone’s business. I gave it to the party to ensure the album has no issues,” he said.

According to him, he realised at a point that the party was not seeking to provide a genuine album, hence drew the attention of the party’s chairman. However, none of his concerns were addressed.

“All the measures brought by the party, I realized that they don’t want to have a genuine album. I wrote a letter to the Chairman noting this there will be problems. I went to his house to inform him. Chairman assured me that the challenges would be resolved. They never said anything up till date. The credibility of the voter album was in doubt.”

Due to some of these challenges, Mr Kyerematen has parted ways with the NPP and seeks to contest for the highest position in the land as an independent candidate.

  • Ministers, other key govt officials will be appointed from all parties in my administration – Alan

The leader of the Movement for Change, Alan Kyerematen, has mentioned some strategic measures he would be taking to ensure the country benefits from its human resources.

According to him, his government would be one that comprises all competent individuals, irrespective of whatever political party they affiliate with.

In a Twitter post on Tuesday, September 26, the former Trade Minister pledged that “when I am elected as President, Ministers and other key Government officials will be appointed from ALL PARTIES, and shall also include individuals who are APOLITICAL but have a demonstrable and proven track record of performance, in their field of specialization.”

He also noted that he will promote the establishment of a Government of National Unity, “which will include people from all walks of life, irrespective of their political, religious, and ethnic affiliations: rich or poor, able-bodied or physically challenged, young or old, women and men.”

Mr Kyerematen has therefore called on every Ghanaian citizen to join him in his movement.

“In particular, for the youth of Ghana, this is your chance to take control of power and authority in this country and shape the course of your own future,” he added.

  • ‘I don’t take instructions from people’ – Alan to NPP over resignation

On September 25, former presidential candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Alan Kyerematen announced his resignation from the ruling party during a press conference, where he revealed that he would be contesting the 2024 presidential elections as an independent candidate.

Following this, the New Patriotic Party, during a press conference moderated by its General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua, disclosed that Mr Kyerematen failed to inform the party of his intentions ahead of this significant move.

He said the party was disappointed and distressed by his failure to engage the party. According to Mr Frimpong Kodua, this gives the assertion that his resignation was premeditated and irrevocable.

In response to the party’s statement, Mr Kyerematen said he found no need to inform the party of his decision as he is an independent individual capable of making rational decisions.

“I went to a contest, and after my review of the contest, I decided to exit the party. I don’t have to inform anyone.

“I am an established man, and I don’t take instructions from people. I might look younger, but I’m an elderly man,” he said on Accra-based UTV.

Mr Kyerematen argues that his services are no longer needed by the ruling party.

“Under the circumstances and given the context provided, I wish to use this platform to announce that I am honourably resigning with immediate effect from the New Patriotic Party to contest for the high office of the President of the Republic of Ghana in the 2024 General Elections, as an Independent Presidential Candidate,” he said in his speech.

  • Alan reveals why he stormed Akufo-Addo’s house

Former presidential aspirant for the New Patriotic Party, Alan Kyerematen, has disclosed that he contacted President Akufo-Addo prior to his resignation from his role as Trade Minister during his second term in office.

On January 6, Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen resigned from his position as Minister for Trade and Industry. He served in the portfolio since 2017. He left the position to pursue his presidential ambitions.

In an interview on UTV, the founder of the Movement for Change noted that he personally visited President Akufo-Addo at his residence to communicate his intentions so as to safeguard the president’s legacy.

According to him, the President welcomed his resolution to exit his government.

“When I was about to resign from government I informed him, I told him, big brother this is all the help I can give. Please, I am excusing myself from the position, and this is why I am doing so and he was cool with that, before I even a letter to him. I have a good relationship with him.

“I intentionally went back to him, asking him to understand that living government to contest that I am doing that to protect his legacy. So I don’t have issues with him,” he said.

  • You will not go scot-free; you will pay the price – Prophet Kofi Oduro to Akufo-Addo

The founder of Alabaster International Ministries, Prophet Kofi Oduro, has noted that President Akufo-Addo and his appointees will not evade the repercussions of their actions, which have left many citizens in distress and crippled the country’s economy.

During a recent sermon, Prophet Oduro accused government officials of embezzling taxpayers’ money.

“I don’t care who you are; I presented it as it is. Tell them they will never go scot-free. Anybody here who has spent people’s money, you will pay; take it from me, you will pay the price. I am telling you the mind of God,” he declared.

He also made a startling revelation with regards to President Akufo-Addo and the Jubilee House.

According to him, the divine presence of God has departed from these political entities.

“Tell Jubilee House the Lord is against you, tell Jubilee House judgment is on your head, tell Akufo-Addo you are under judgment, tell him. I have told you the mind of God…the one who sent me has given me a message.”

He added: “Don’t you know when God is with somebody? If God is with someone, those people don’t go through madness; it has been a long time since God has forsaken you, people. I am telling you.”

  • God is against Akufo-Addo and the Jubilee House – Prophet Kofi Oduro

Founder of Alabaster International Ministries, Prophet Kofi Oduro, is of the firm assertion that the presence of God has departed from both the present government and its opposition party in Ghana.

During one of his sermons, Prophet Oduro expressed his conviction that this divine absence is evident in what he characterized as “irrational behavior” displayed by those in positions of power.

He stressed the notion that the presence of God becomes unmistakably apparent when it guides the actions of individuals or governments, leading them to align with divine principles.

However, he argued that the current political landscape in Ghana appears to indicate otherwise, suggesting a lack of divine influence on the decision-making processes of those in power.

In his sermon, Prophet Oduro stated, “How can anybody tell this present government or their opposition, that God is with them? Who has the boldness to talk that nonsense? God is with them?

“Don’t you know when God is with somebody? If God is with someone, those people don’t go through madness; it has been a long time since God has forsaken you, people. I am telling you.”

The religious leader proceeded to deliver a message of divine judgment, specifically targeting the highest office of the presidency, Jubilee House, and President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

He confidently stated that they would not be exempt from facing the repercussions of their actions and choices.

“Tell Jubilee House the Lord is against you, tell Jubilee House judgment is on your head, tell Akufo-Addo you are under judgment, tell him. I have told you the mind of God…the one who sent me has given me a message.

“I don’t care who you are; I presented it as it is. Tell them they will never go scot-free. Anybody here who has spent people’s money, you will pay; take it from me, you will pay the price. I am telling you the mind of God,” he declared.

  • Alan goes after NPP elders, leaders following failed presidential bid

Former presidential candidate aspirant of the New Patriotic Party, Mr. Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen, launched a verbal attack on certain elders and leaders within the party, accusing them of effectively taking control of the party when he announced his resignation last Monday.

According to him, the party has been seized by a specific group of party leaders and elders, government appointees, covert power influencers, and some unscrupulous party members.

The former Trade and Industry Minister made these allegations as he announced his immediate resignation from the ruling party during a press conference held on Monday, September 25, 2023, in Accra.

Mr. Kyerematen underscored his role as a Founding Member of the New Patriotic Party, having joined the party at its inception. He expressed his initial belief in the party’s fundamental principles and the enduring customs of its predecessors, which were rooted in principles of fairness, equity, probity, accountability, and transparency.

“I have devoted the best part of my professional career to serving the party, and I still believe in the vision of the founding fathers of the party” he stressed.

However, he stated that the NPP as it exists now has very little resemblance to the party that he joined in 1992 and helped to nurture.

“It was my fervent wish to use the vehicle of the party to bring my God given talents, experience, and knowledge acquired both locally and internationally over a period of 46 years, to serve our dear nation, Ghana at the highest level of executive authority” a disgruntled Alan Kyerematen bemoaned.

He conveyed that his services and contributions to the party have not been duly acknowledged, and he believes that his continued presence in the party would only exacerbate existing tensions and divisions. He emphasized that the current situation mirrors the circumstances that prompted his earlier decision to resign from the party in 2008.

The former State Minister took this opportunity to declare his intention to run as an Independent Presidential candidate in the upcoming 2024 general elections.

Alan Kyerematen also unveiled the creation of a new movement in Ghana called the “Movement For Change,” which he personally intends to lead into the elections next year.

He explained that the movement’s logo is the Monarch Butterfly, which holds political symbolism representing change, transformation, hope, and positivity. He emphasized that it also conveys important qualities such as strength, endurance, spirituality, and trust, all of which he values as a Political Leader. In the Akan language, it is known as Afrafranto. The movement’s motto is “Ghana Will Rise Again,” symbolizing hope for Ghana’s future.

Furthermore, Alan Kyerematen highlighted that this new movement will be driven and energized by the youth of Ghana. Among the over 17 million registered voters in the 2020 general election, the youth aged 18-35 constituted over 9.4 million voters, representing 55% of the total voters.

He stressed that the youth are undeniably the future of the country, yet they are also the most vulnerable segment of society.

  • Alan joined the NPP just to become President – Kwadwo Boateng Agyemang

A former New Patriotic Party (NPP) New Juaben North Chairman, Mr. Kwadwo Boateng-Agyemang, believes that former Trade Minister, John Alan Kyerematen only joined the ruling party to pursue his presidential ambitions.

He has joined the many individuals who have criticised Mr Kyerematen for resigning from the party for the second time.

According to Mr Boateng-Agyemang, there are party faithful who have made valuable contribution but have not resigned over challenges. He is of the assertion that the former Trade Minister should have ironed out his issues with the party instead of resigning.

“In this game of ours, everyone has made contributions. Some have done more than others. Those who have contributed more than you but have been unfairly treated, did such people leave”

“I’m interrogating his statement. Nana Addo in 1998, what did he not go through during the process. So if you behave like a spoilt child when someone offends you, that’s not how it works.

“It is clear to us that from Day 1, you just wanted to become president. From 1992, 1996, 2000, 2007, even when we were in the wilderness even in opposition, you compete. This is his second resignation. You resigned and the party brought you back. You even contested after you were brought back in 2012,” he said in an interview on UTV.

Mr Kyerematen on September 25, announced his resignation from the New Patriotic Party. He cited challenges with the party’s electoral process as one of the reasons for his resignation.

During the 1996 Presidential Primaries, Mr Kyerematen contested alongside leading personalities in the Party such as Professor Adu Boahen, Mr. J. A. Kufour, Dr. Dsane-Selby, Dr. Kwame Sarfo Adu, Mr. J.H. Mensah and Dr. Jones Ofori-Attah.

According to him, he was prevailed upon by some senior members of the Party, in particular, Mr. Akenten Appiah Menka and Mr. Stephen Krakue, both of blessed memory, to sacrifice the opportunity to contest for the leadership of the Party, and rather support my senior colleague aspirants.

He noted that from 1996 to 2000, he played a leading role in supporting the bid of the then candidate John Agyekum Kufour to win the general elections, and become President of the Republic in 2001.

Following the elections, Mr Kyerematen says he was offered a Cabinet minister position, which he declined.

“After refusing appointment as a Cabinet Minister in the aftermath of the elections, the President persuaded me to become NPP’s first Ambassador to the United States, a position I served with distinction,” he said.

Mr Kyerematen made this revelation when he announced his resignation from the NPP today, September 25, 2023.

In 2003, Mr Kyerematen was appointed as Minister for Trade and Industry and Presidential Special Initiatives, to implement a new economic paradigm which he had introduced in 2001, on the assumption of office by President Kufour.

Between 2003 and 2007, he led the government’s programme for enhancing private sector development and ushering in a Golden Age of business in Ghana.

According to Mr Kyerematen, since 2007, he and his supporters have been attacked by some members of the party.

  • Bawumia vs Mahama will drown Alan when campaign season reaches its peak – Paul Adom-Otchere

Host of Metro TV’s Good Evening Ghana, Paul Adom-Otchere, has made a prediction regarding Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, who recently resigned from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to pursue the presidency as an Independent Candidate.

Mr Adom-Otchere anticipates that as the 2024 election campaign intensifies, Alan Kyerematen may fade into obscurity in the eyes of voters.

Adom-Otchere’s analysis suggests that if Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia secures the NPP’s flagbearer position, the upcoming election will primarily revolve around a fierce competition between Bawumia and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama.

On Monday, September 25, Alan Kyerematen formally resigned from the NPP to embark on his independent candidacy for the presidency.

Speaking on Eyewitness News on Citi FM, Mr Adom-Otchere said, “I can tell you that by the time the campaign hits a crescendo, if Dr Mahamudu Bawumia becomes the NPP’s candidate, with the kind of campaigning he does, which he’s going to do. When the campaign reaches a crescendo, and it’s John Dramani Mahama versus Dr. Bawumia, people will even forget that Alan Kyerematen is contesting.

“It’s going to be a stiff election, it’s going to be brutally fought. And nobody will remember that there’s a third candidate. I can assure you of that, we still need time to see how Alan’s campaign will pan out”.

Adom-Otchere also conveyed his opinion that although certain Ghanaians, including youth from both the NPP and NDC, might express their support for Alan Kyerematen on social media platforms, they may ultimately choose not to cast their votes in his favor during the 2024 elections.

“An NPP youth person will feel that voting for Alan means throwing his vote away, so they are more likely to vote for their party. NDC people on the other hand are a bit frightened by the break of the 8, they don’t want the 8 to happen.

“They certainly want the 8 to be destroyed. They want the NPP out, they want their candidate to win. So NDC youth are not even going to pay attention to potentially vote for Alan. They may support him on social media. They will support him in rhetoric but in terms of casting the ballot, they will vote for John Mahama,” he said.

Alan cited the intimidation of his supporters and the increasing divisiveness within the party as among the reasons for his resignation.

  • Ghana set to become first African country to issue FLEGT license

Ghana is in the final stages of becoming the first African country to issue FLEGT license to cover its timber and wood products traded on the European market.

A FLEGT licence is an export licence issued by a VPA partner country for timber or timber-related products destined for the EU market which certifies that the timber or timber related products exported under that licence are legal.

The feat was achieved during the 11th Joint Monitoring and Review Mechanism meeting held between Ghana and the EU in Brussels between 20th – 26th September, 2023.

This places Ghana as the 2nd country in the world after Indonesia to begin the trade in legally certified wood and wood products with the EU under the Forest Law Enforcement Governance and Trade (FLEGT) mechanism.

Ghana’s Timber Legality Assurance System when it becomes fully operational in 2024, will mark over a decade of institutional and regulatory reforms in the trade in legal timber. It will also be evidence of the Government’s commitments at responsible management of the nation’s forest resources.

In November 2009, Ghana became the first timber-producing country to sign a Voluntary Partnership Agreement (hereinafter referred to as VPA or Agreement) with European Union (EU). The Agreement entered into force on 1 December 2009.

Under the FLEGT licence, timber and timber related products covered by a valid FLEGT licence automatically meet the requirements of the EU Timber Regulation (EUTR) and prohibits the placing onto the EU market illegally harvested timber and timber related products derived from such timber.

The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel A. Jinapor, led a high-level Ghanaian delegation made up of representatives from the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, the Chairman of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Lands and Forest and key stakeholder groups, including the Ghanaian public authorities in charge of forest administration, private sector and civil society, at the 11th Joint Monitoring and Review Mechanism (JMRM) meeting in Brussels from 20-26 September, 2023. This JMRM sought to advance on the final procedural steps towards the issuance of FLEGT licences.

This meeting marks a major milestone in the global fight against illegal timber trade and testaments to achieving the VPA objective of improved forest governance.

This session of the JMRM was the first since May 2019, and also the first one to be convened outside of Ghana. During the technical meetings, the Parties reviewed and discussed the status of implementation of the Agreement.

The Parties also agreed on the Joint Action Plan towards FLEGT licensing, and raised outstanding procedural issues to be addressed before FLEGT licences can be issued. The FLEGT licences attest to the legality of Ghana’s timber and will facilitate trade in timber and timber related products for both exporters and importers.

In 2016, Indonesia became the first country in the world to issue FLEGT licences. With the conclusion of the VPA, Ghana will become the second country in the world and the first in Africa to issue FLEGT licence.

According to Koen Doens, Director General at the European Commission’s Directorate General for International Partnerships (INTPA), “Over the years, we have witnessed a remarkable dedication to sustainable forest management and the combatting of illegal logging.

The dedication of Ghana’s government and its forestry sector, alongside the support and cooperation of our European partners, has brought us to the cusp of FLEGT licensing. This achievement underscores the power of international cooperation in addressing critical global challenges such as deforestation and illegal logging. We look forward to the positive impact that FLEGT licensing will have on Ghana’s timber industry and the broader environment, demonstrating how partnerships and persistent efforts can lead to meaningful change”.

Ghana has undertaken major legislative reforms in its forestry sector to enhance forest governance which supports the objectives of the VPA and Ghana’s commitment to sustainable forest management and the fight against climate change.

In addition to these advances, Ghana is also addressing the trade of illegal timber in both domestic and regional markets. In this regard, Ghana is rolling out a new system for tracking timber on the domestic market that involves both suppliers and traders, and requires proof of legality through the chain of custody.

Through the VPA, Ghana is controlling illegal timber trade, modernising timber operations and ensuring⁷ forestry brings employment in the formal economy and social benefits such as payments to communities through SocialResponsibility Agreements. For the EU, the VPA contributes to achieving the goals of the EU’s FLEGT Action Plan which aims to improve forest governance and combat illegal logging.

The Hon. Minister for Lands and Natural Resources of Ghana, Mr. Samuel A. Jinapor, MP, stated that Ghana has seen significant improvements in forest governance with the implementation and operation of the timber legality assurance system.

He indicated that the impending issuance of FLEGT licenses to the EU market and licenses to other international destinations will be undergirded with the same legality standards.

This will be the next logical step in consolidating the gains towards sustainable forest management and forest governance as a whole. Ghana’s commitment to the VPA, as well as halting and reversing forest loss and land degradation by 2030 remain absolute.

Fourteen years after the start of the implementation of the Agreement, and after several significant technical, legal and governance developments in Ghana’s forestry sector, Parties have agreed that they are ready for FLEGT licensing.

  • Health Ministry partners KNUST, others to hold health policy dialogue series

The Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), the School of Public Health, and the Technical University of Berlin, has launched this year’s Health Policy Dialogue.

The dialogue is on the theme “The Exodus of Healthcare Workers from Ghana; Implication for Skill-Mix and Network of Practice Innovations towards Achieving Universal Health Coverage in Ghana”.

The main objective of the two-day health policy dialogue series is to establish a network of key stakeholders to engage in policy discussions on the future development of the health systems in Ghana.

Minister for Health, Kwaku Agyemang Manu, speaking at the opening ceremony, in a speech read on his behalf, indicated that one of the policy objectives of the health sector is to achieve universal access to a better, efficiently managed, high-quality health system that considers the extent of health service coverage and utilization through the availability of medicines, critical human resource, healthcare facilities, and National Health Insurance Scheme.

He added that the ministry has targeted achieving at least 80% coverage of Ghanaians who have access to essential health services.

He said, “We cannot achieve Universal Health Coverage (UHC) without the requisite human resources for health. We all know that human resources for health are essential for achieving UHC”.

The Minister therefore lamented that Ghana has one of the highest rates of health worker emigration in sub-Saharan Africa, with over 50% of doctors and 24% of nurses trained in the country now working overseas.

He recounted factors such as low salaries, poor working conditions, and a lack of opportunities for professional development as contributors to the migration of these health workers from Ghana.

He further revealed that the ministry is working with international partners to promote ethical recruitment practices among foreign employers of health workers.

This, according to him, will help to ensure that Ghanaian health workers are not exploited or mistreated when they work overseas.

Participants at the conference will engage in several dialogue sessions to discuss intriguing insights from current research on factors associated with turnover intentions as well as those pushing healthcare workers away from Ghana and those attracting them to other countries; ultimately culminating in the current exodus.

  • Don’t be an ingrate, I helped you – Alan tells Chairman Wontumi

Founder and leader of Movement for Change, Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, has advised the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako popularly known as Chairman Wontumi to be temperate in his comments over his recent resignation from the ruling party.

In response to the former Trade Minister’s resignation from the NPP, Chairman Wontumi during an interview conducted on Wontumi TV portrayed Mr Kyerematen as ungrateful, especially in light of the considerable support and opportunities that the NPP had extended to him.

He suggested that Alan’s departure from the NPP could potentially result in adverse consequences for him.

“…President Kufour made you an ambassador and you were so happy. You (Alan), your girlfriends, your wife and your children enjoyed it so much. You sent them to good schools. President Kufuor also made you trade minister and because of this, you became so rich that you were nick-named Alan Cash.

“…You have enjoyed in the past because of the NPP. As for me, I think this resignation is a curse to him because the NPP has helped him. Look at how the party has helped you. If everyone in the NPP got what you have gotten from the party, none of them would complain of being mistreated,” he said in the Twi dialect.

But his comments have not sat well with Mr Kyerematen, who has cautioned Chairman Wontumi to be careful of the words he utters.

According to Mr Kyerematen, Chairman Wontumi lacks the ability to criticise him for his decision as he has on several occasions assisted him. He further described Chairman Wontumi as an “ingrate” for siding with other presidential aspirants during the party’s Super Delegates Conference.

“Who is Chairman Wontumi? I brought him into the party in 2005 with good intentions. He was a small-time businessman at that time. I have tolerated a lot of disrespect.

“He [Wontumi] should be careful with the things he’s doing. You don’t have to be an ingrate if someone helps you. I led the delegation to ensure Wontumi became Regional Chairman, ask him. Now that he is gotten that top position, he thinks he is above everyone else. When I heard him campaigning against me, it was surprising,” he said.

According to Mr Kyerematen, he felt betrayed when Chairman Wontumi openly campaigned against him.

“I’ve done nothing to you. If you support someone else, it’s nothing but to do an open campaign against me, what is your problem? If you’re a Regional Chairman should you do that? You are supposed to be fair but you have become a cheerleader,” he said sadly.

A memorandum from the leadership of  Ashanti Region’s New Patriotic Party (NPP)  has ordered all regional chairpersons in the 47 constituencies to quickly remove all posters, banners, and other campaign materials associated with the former Trade and Industry Minister, Alan Kyerematen, from their party offices.

In the memo dated September 25, 2023, with the subject “Removal of all Alan Kverematen-branded items from our party offices” and signed by the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP, Mr. Bernard Antwi Boasiako, chairpersons region-wide to  remove all posters, banners, and other campaign materials associated with the former Trade and Industry Minister, Alan Kyerematen, from their party offices due to his resignation.

Reacting to this, Mr. Kyerematen said he was not bothered.

“It’s no problem. The order came from Wontumi. Who brought Wontumi to the party? I brought him into the party. He has to be thanking Alan Kyerematen”.

  • Alan’s resignation disappointing and distressing – NPP

The ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) has reacted to Alan Kyerematen’s decision to resign from the party, describing the political move as disheartening.

Mr Kyerematen announced his resignation on September 25, 2023, when he addressed the country about his political ambitions ahead of the 2024 general elections during a press conference at the Movenpick Ambassador Hotel in Accra.

The former Trade Minister noted that he no longer recognises the NPP, which has been unfair to himself and his supporters, as its current aims and agenda no longer reflect what the founding fathers had hoped to achieve.

As such, he has distanced himself from the ruling government and will contest for the office of president as an independent candidate via a new political party, Movement for Change.

“Fellow Countrymen and Women, I joined the New Patriotic Party at the very beginning of its establishment as a Founding Member, believing in its core values and the long-standing traditions of its antecedents, predicated on fairness, equity, probity, accountability, and transparency. I have devoted the best part of my professional career to serving the Party, and I still believe in the vision of the founding fathers of the Party. However, the NPP as it exists now has very little resemblance to the Party that I joined in 1992 and helped to nurture. The Party has been hijacked by a selected group of Party leaders and elders, government appointees, “behind the curtain power brokers” and some unscrupulous Party apparatchiks.

“It was my fervent wish to use the vehicle of the Party to bring my God-given talents, experience, and knowledge acquired both locally and internationally over a period of 46 years, to serve our dear nation, Ghana at the highest level of executive authority.
It is abundantly clear to me, that my services and contributions to the Party are not appreciated, and that my continuous stay in the Party will create further tension and division, which is an exact replay of circumstances that led to my decision to resign from the Party in 2008.

“Fellow Countrymen and Women, Under the circumstances and given the context provided, I wish to use this platform to announce that I am honourably resigning with immediate effect from the New Patriotic Party to contest for the high office of the President of the Republic of Ghana in the 2024 General Elections, as an Independent Presidential Candidate,” he said.

Officially reacting to Mr Kyerematen’s resignation during a press conference on Tuesday, September 26, 2023, the party’s General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua criticised Mr Kyerematen for failing to inform the leadership of party of his decision before broadcasting such sensitive information to over 31 million Ghanaians.

“The disappointing part is the mode in which he decided to resign from the party, which was through a press conference without prior notice to the party,” he said.

Mr Frimpong Kodua holds the assertion that no initiative by the party would have been able to persuade Mr Kyerematen into boycotting his plans to part ways with the party.

“The party wants to believe that by his decision to hold a press conference to resign without first informing the leadership of the party suggests that he made a premeditated and irrevocable decision to resign from the party.”

Meanwhile, the NPP has refuted claims that its virtues no longer reflect those of its founding fathers and that the party has been hijacked by some individuals, as alleged by Mr Kyerematen.

  • Alan’s resignation was predetermined and irrevocable – NPP

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has noted that there was nothing it could have done to prevent former presidential candidate, John Alan Kyerematen from resigning from the party.

The party’s General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua, during a press conference held on Tuesday, September 26, explained that Mr Kyerematen was resolved to leave the party owing to his decision to announce such an important step via a press conference.

According to Mr Frimpong Kodua, the former Trade Minister did not accord the party due respect by giving prior notice of his resignation before holding a press briefing in Accra on Monday.

He said: “The disappointing part is the mode in which he decided to resign from the party, which was through a press conference without prior notice to the party.

The party wants to believe that by his decision to hold a press conference to resign without first informing the leadership of the party suggests that he made a premeditated and irrevocable decision to resign from the party.”

Mr Kyerematen announced his resignation on September 25, when he addressed the country during a press conference at the Movenpick Ambassador Hotel in Accra today, September 25, 2023.

He noted that he no longer recognizes the NPP, which has been unfair to himself and his supporters, as its current aims and agenda no longer reflect what the founding fathers had hoped to achieve.

Meanwhile, the New Patriotic Party says it has accepted Mr Kyerematen’s resignation from the party.

  • GNFS educates public on 10 flood safety tips

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has provided 10 safety tips to assist members of the general public to stay safe amidst flooding.

The public education is timely, as the country has recorded numerous deaths owing to the perennial flooding whenever there is heavy rain.

Below are ten things you need to do during a flood.

    • Listen to a local Television or Radio Station for latest information on the weather.
    • Follow instructions given by public safety officials like Ghana National Fire Service.
    • Be alert to changing weather conditions and be ready to move to higher ground.
    • Consider postponing outdoor activities.
    • Tie down or bring in outdoor objects (patio furniture, children’s toys, trash cans, etc.) that could be swept away or damaged during flooding.
    • Consider switching off and unplugging sensitive electronic equipment before flooding occurs.
    • But, do not touch electrical equipment if you are wet or standing in water.
    • Elevate items stored in your basement or storage house to prevent damage. If possible store such items in water tight containers. If you have a sump pump, check that it is working.
    • Consider clearing street catch basins and other storm drains to prevent or reduce street flooding.
    • Avoid camping or parking along streams, rivers, creeks, or other areas prone to flooding during heavy rainfall. These areas can flood rapidly and with little warning.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMeT) has issued a warning that Accra, the country’s capital, is at risk of flooding whenever rainfall exceeds 50 millimeters.

Owing to this, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), George Ayisi, has entreated members of the general public to immediately search for havens when it begins to pour heavily.

According to Mr Ayisi, identifying safe spots is critical when one is unable to determine whether his or her environment is flood-prone.

“Those who are traveling, in some cases, it will be stormy, windy. If you are travelling to places where there are trees and co just be careful. If you are in areas where the roofing of houses or homes areas not too good, let’s be careful in those areas.

“If we are in areas where we are not sure and they are flood prone let’s try and identify safe havens in the city and then let’s try and move to safer grounds for ourselves and our relatives,” he stated.

  • Alan resigned without prior notice to the party – NPP

General Secretary for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Kodua, has revealed that former presidential aspirant, John Alan Kyerematen, failed to inform the party of his resignation before going public.

He made this known when the party addressed Mr Kyerematen’s resignation during a press conference held at the party’s headquarters today.

He said: “The disappointing part is the mode in which he decided to resign from the party, which was through a press conference without prior notice to the party.”

Following this, Mr Frimpong Kodua, in a press statement, deemed Mr Kyerematen’s resignation “unfortunate”.

“The leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has taken notice of the unfortunate decision of Mr. Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, a long-standing member of the Party to forfeit his membership and contest as an independent presidential candidate in the 2024 general elections,” the statement read.

Meanwhile, the NPP holds the assertion that Mr Kyerematen was keen on exiting the party, hence his decision to make such an announcement via a press conference.

“The party wants to believe that by his decision to hold a press conference to resign without first informing the leadership of the party suggests that he made a premeditated and irrevocable decision to resign from the party,” Mr Kodua noted.

  • “Your resignation is a curse to you, because you have enjoyed before!” – Wontumi tells Alan Kyerematen

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely recognized as Chairman Wontumi, has expressed strong criticism towards Alan Kyerematen, a former NPP presidential aspirant, for his decision to leave the party and contest the 2024 elections as an independent candidate.

During an interview conducted on Wontumi TV on Monday, September 25, 2023, Chairman Wontumi openly expressed his disapproval of Alan’s choice.

He portrayed Alan as ungrateful, especially in light of the considerable support and opportunities that the NPP had extended to him. Furthermore, he suggested that Alan’s departure from the NPP could potentially result in adverse consequences for him.

On September 25, 2023, Mr. Kyerematen made a significant announcement regarding his political affiliation. He formally declared his resignation from the party during a press conference held at the Movenpick Ambassador Hotel in Accra.

In his statement, he expressed his disillusionment with the NPP, asserting that the party had treated him and his supporters unfairly. He contended that the NPP’s current goals and agenda no longer align with the original vision of the party’s founding fathers.

As a result of these sentiments, the former Trade Minister revealed his intention to run for the presidency as an independent candidate in the upcoming 2024 election, representing his newly established party, the Movement for Change.

It’s worth noting that Mr. Kyerematen had initially been a contender for the NPP’s flagbearer position. However, on September 5, he withdrew from the race, citing reasons such as electoral irregularities, unfair treatment, and bias during the super delegates’ conference held on August 26, 2023.

This isn’t the first time Mr. Kyerematen has parted ways with the NPP. He previously resigned from the party in 2008 following alleged attacks on his supporters after the NPP conducted its 2007 presidential primaries.

Throughout his political career, Mr. Kyerematen has been an active member of the NPP, having been associated with the party since its inception in 1992. He played a pivotal role in establishing the Young Executives Forum (YEF), a group of young and dynamic business executives and professionals that provided significant financial support to the party. This support included the seed fund for the acquisition of the NPP’s first national headquarters building.

Meanwhile, former Ashanti Regional Minister, Samson Kwaku Boafo, has publicly endorsed Mr. Kyerematen in his presidential bid, lending his support to his aspirations for the highest office in the country.

  • Google ‘exposes’ Alan’s ‘plagiarised’ logo

    Google ‘exposes’ Alan’s ‘plagiarised’ logo

Upon initial observation, Alan Kyerematen’s new political party logo closely resembles a real-life monarch butterfly, offering a nearly lifelike representation.

While it may appear that minimal effort was made to tailor the Nymphalid butterfly to align with the conventions of a typical Ghanaian political party logo, closer scrutiny reveals that the Movement for Change emblem has, in fact, been adjusted to accurately portray the likeness of a genuine monarch butterfly, possibly through alterations inspired by images found on Google.

Alan Kyerematen decided on the monarch butterfly as his political symbol after exiting the New Patriotic Party on September 25, 2023. For him, the monarch butterfly carries deep symbolism, representing transformation and change in the realm of Ghanaian politics.

The monarch butterfly is known for its striking black and orange colors and is associated with transformation, rebirth, and renewal.

Mr Kyerematen’s decision to run as an independent candidate marks a significant departure from his longstanding association with the NPP, and the monarch butterfly, he says symbolizes his quest for political change and growth.

He notes that the monarch butterfly’s strength and endurance are parallel to his determination to uphold his convictions and principles.

The choice of black and orange in the symbol carries significance for the former Trade Minister. Black represents mystery and power, which Mr Kyerematen says emphasizes the enigmatic nature of his departure from the NPP.

However, it also hints at the mixed emotions and potential conflicts surrounding his decision. On the other hand, the vibrant orange symbolizes Kyerematen’s passion for change, creative approach to politics, and his goal to uplift the spirits of the Ghanaian people.

  • NDC’s Edudzi Tamakloe concerned over high cost of dialysis treatment at Korle Bu Hospital

NDC’s Edudzi Tamakloe concerned over high cost of dialysis treatment at Korle Bu Hospital

Director of Legal Affairs of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Edudzi Kudzo Tamakloe, has expressed deep concern regarding the recent increase in the price of kidney dialysis treatment at the renowned Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Ghana.

The cost of this critical life-saving therapy has risen sharply, escalating from GH¢380 to an alarming GH¢768.22, causing significant distress among many Ghanaians.

In a heartfelt appeal, Edudzi Kudzo Tamakloe implored the management of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital to reconsider their decision. He underscored the importance of not prioritizing profit at the expense of the well-being of patients, emphasizing the need for a balanced approach that considers the welfare of the individuals seeking medical care.

“I woke up thinking about this notice at Korle Bu. Korle Bu Teaching Hospital is not a private hospital to be focused on only making profit. I want to plead with the management of the hospital to reverse this death sentence on Ghanaian patients. I know friends and families that require dialysis to survive. In the meantime, let’s take good care of our kidneys by drinking enough water. Reverse the increase in the cost of dialysis treatment,” Tameklo shared on Facebook.

The startling rise in the cost of dialysis treatment has left many Ghanaians active on social media perplexed and concerned.

Reports indicate that the management of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital has informed patients of a substantial increase in the price of dialysis, soaring from GH¢380 to an exorbitant GH¢765.42.

On the popular social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter), one Ghanaian expressed their apprehension about how individuals requiring dialysis treatment would manage such a significant cost escalation.

This development has triggered widespread anxiety among citizens, who are deeply troubled by the accessibility and affordability of vital medical services at one of the country’s most prestigious healthcare institutions.

Moreover, the surge in the cost of dialysis treatment at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital has raised pertinent questions about the healthcare system’s capacity to provide essential services to those in need.

Kidney dialysis is a crucial medical procedure employed to treat individuals grappling with kidney failure or severe kidney dysfunction.

Its primary objective is to replicate the essential functions of the kidneys, which encompass filtering waste products and excess fluids from the bloodstream, regulating electrolyte levels, and maintaining an optimal fluid balance within the body.

When the kidneys falter in performing these critical functions adequately, dialysis emerges as a necessary intervention to uphold the patient’s health and overall well-being.

Hemodialysis stands out as the most prevalent form of dialysis. During a hemodialysis session, a patient’s blood is extracted from their body and directed into a specialized apparatus called a dialyzer.

Within the dialyzer, the blood traverses a network of fine tubes immersed in a solution known as dialysate. This solution plays a pivotal role in expelling waste products and surplus fluids from the bloodstream.

Following the purification process, the cleansed blood is then returned to the patient’s body. Hemodialysis is typically administered in specialized dialysis centers or hospital settings.

15 ways Alan intends to change Ghana

Alan Kyerematen is poised to appear on the ballot papers as a presidential candidate in the 2024 elections in Ghana, under the banner of his newly established “Movement for Change”, holding all things equal.

The former aspirant for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer position has expressed his belief that this movement holds the potential to bring about the essential change that Ghana requires.

During his official announcement on Monday, September 25, 2023, regarding his departure from the NPP, a party he had been affiliated with since 1992, Alan Kyerematen emphasized that this innovative movement will be driven by the youth of Ghana.

“I will establish and lead a new MOVEMENT FOR CHANGE in Ghana. The brand logo for the MOVEMENT is the Monarch Butterfly, which politically symbolizes change and transformation, hope, and positivity. It also communicates strength, endurance, spirituality, and trust, which are key traits that I cherish as a Political Leader. In Akan, it is known as Afrafranto. The brand motto of the MOVEMENT is ‘Ghana Will Rise Again,’ which symbolizes hope for the future of Ghana.

The Great Transformational Plan of the Movement for Change:

Following his separation from the New Patriotic Party, Alan Kyerematen has carried forward his well-known GTP plan to his newly established movement. He explained that through this 10-point GTP (Ghana Transformation Plan), he intends to provide the crucial employment opportunities required by the youth and stimulate the growth of a resilient national economy.

“Ghana is at a crossroads and the dynamics of our time requires a transformational leader. I believe that I am the leader for this time. I have already put forward for the consideration of our country, the Great Transformational Plan (GTP) which will significantly deal with poverty, and bring prosperity to our nation.

    “The GTP is anchored on these pillars, namely;

The Great Transformational Plan will provide “Jobs for the People, Cash for the People.”

  • Your resignation from NPP does not show loyalty – Mpraeso MP to Alan

Your resignation from NPP does not show loyalty – Mpraeso MP to Alan

Member of Parliament representing the Mpraeso Constituency, Davis Ansah Opoku (OPK), has conveyed his disappointment regarding Alan Kyerematen’s departure from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and his intention to run as an independent candidate in the 2024 elections.

In a statement shared on Facebook, he described the move as “profoundly disappointing” and a “departure from the principles of party loyalty and unity” that are fundamental to the democratic process.

“The NPP has always thrived on the strength of its agreement and the collective support of its members. I express my unwavering commitment to the New Patriotic Party and its vision for Ghana.”

“The NPP is a party of great ideals, and we must come together, reaffirm our loyalty to the party, and work tirelessly towards securing victory in the 2024 elections. The Party remains Supreme; our strength lies in our unity. Let us put aside our differences and focus on our shared goal of delivering progress, prosperity, and good governance to the people of Ghana,” he added.

Mr Kyerematen announced his decision to resign from the ruling party when he addressed the country during a press conference at the Movenpick Ambassador Hotel in Accra today, September 25, 2023.

He noted that he no longer recognises the NPP, which has been unfair to himself and his supporters, as its current aims and agenda no longer reflect what the founding fathers had hoped to achieve.

According to the former Trade Minister, he will contest for the office of president as an independent candidate in 2024 with his new party, Movement for Change.

Mr Kyerematen was among the contenders for the NPP flagbearer position, but on September 5, he declared his withdrawal from the race, citing reasons such as electoral irregularities, unfair treatment, and bias during the super delegates’ conference held on August 26, 2023.

  • NPP MP blasts EC after spending GHS30k to transport applicants for limited voter registration

NPP MP blasts EC after spending GHS30k to transport applicants for limited voter registration

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Afigya Kwabre North, Collins Adomako-Mensah, from the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has strongly criticized the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) for its choice to conduct the ongoing limited voter registration exercise exclusively at its district offices.

He emphasized that the EC made this decision despite receiving advice to the contrary from all political parties, including the NPP, that are part of the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC).

Furthermore, Adomako-Mensah revealed that due to the EC’s decision, he was compelled to allocate substantial funds, amounting to thousands of Ghana cedis, for the transportation of numerous constituents to the district office to facilitate their registration.

“The EC is supposed to be independent but it must know that it is working for the people of Ghana. So, even if the law says you to be independent, whatever you’re doing should be for the betterment of the Ghanaian people.

“You went to an IPAC meeting and all the political parties there, including my party, were against EC having the registration at just one centre… Why should I be busing people from town to town just to come and register? Why?” he quizzed.

He further stated “My point is that even if you cannot expand the registration centre, increase the number of machines. So, that at every point in time, 10 or 15 people would be registering. If you think it is too expensive to expand the centres, increase the machines. I don’t see why as an MP, I should be spending GH¢20,000, GH¢30,000 just to convey people from one end to the other”.

The legislator representing Afigya Kwabre North expressed further discontent, highlighting an additional complication. He pointed out that some of the registration machines employed by the EC are experiencing functionality issues, exacerbating the challenges faced by constituents.

Moreover, due to the limitations in capacity at the district office, it has become necessary to transport individuals to the center on multiple occasions since not everyone can be registered in a single day.

You have benefited from NPP, leaving the party is a curse – Chairman Wontumi to Alan

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi has strongly criticized former NPP presidential hopeful Alan Kyerematen for his choice to exit the party and run as an independent candidate in the 2024 elections.

During an interview on Wontumi TV on Monday, September 25, 2023, Chairman Wontumi voiced his disapproval, characterizing Alan as ungrateful, considering the significant support and opportunities the NPP has provided him.

He went on to suggest that Alan’s decision to depart from the NPP was tantamount to inviting misfortune upon himself.

Mr Kyerematen on September 25, 2023, announced his resignation from the party when he addressed the country during a press conference at the Movenpick Ambassador Hotel in Accra.

Mr Kyerematen first resigned from the party in 2008 following attacks on his supporters after the NPP held its 2007 presidential primaries.

Mr Kyerematen has been an active member of the NPP following its establishment in 1992.

He was part of a group of young dynamic Business Executives and Professionals
came together to establish the Young Executives Forum (YEF) that became the
financial backbone of the Party and provided significant financial resources to support the Party in all its endeavours, including the seed fund for the purchase of the Party’s first national headquarters building.

Meanwhile, former Ashanti Regional Minister, Samson Kwaku Boafo has endorsed Mr Kyerematen in his bid for the highest office of the land.

Ferguson to assume Caley Thistle manager role

Duncan Ferguson, the former Scotland and Everton striker, is set to take on the role of the new manager for Inverness Caledonian Thistle.

The 51-year-old’s brief stint at Forest Green Rovers, which lasted only six months, concluded in July following a string of challenges, including just one win in 18 games during his tenure, ultimately resulting in the team’s relegation from League One. His time at Forest Green marked his first solo venture into managerial duties.

The official announcement of Ferguson’s appointment will be made during a media conference on Tuesday morning. He will be stepping into the position left vacant by the dismissal of Billy Dodds.

At present, Inverness Caledonian Thistle occupies the bottom spot in the Scottish Championship, having secured just one point from six games.

Duncan Ferguson, who enjoyed two spells as a player with Everton, returned to the club in a coaching capacity under fellow Scot David Moyes. During his tenure, he also served as caretaker manager on two occasions and as an assistant manager. In July of the previous year, he left Goodison Park before taking up the role of head coach at Forest Green in January.

In the interim, Caley Thistle’s director of football, John Robertson, assumed caretaker responsibilities for the team’s initial match following Dodds’ departure, resulting in a 1-0 defeat to Dundee United.

This loss marked the second consecutive week in which a late goal handed victory to Caley Thistle’s opponents, propelling them to the top of the Championship table. Dodds’ final match was a 1-0 loss to Raith Rovers in Kirkcaldy.

Duncan Ferguson, whose career commenced with Dundee United before transitioning to Rangers, amassed 73 goals for Everton, with a brief stint at Newcastle in between, and earned seven caps for the Scottish national team.

While Abena Osei-Asare acknowledged her personal and professional association with Mr. Kyerematen and her support for him, she emphasized that her unwavering commitment to the New Patriotic Party remains profound and firmly anchored in their common values.

In a press statement, the Deputy Finance Minister said, “First and foremost, while I enjoy both a personal and professional relationship with Hon. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
    September 25, 2023

I find it necessary to address the recent decision of Hon. Alan Kyerematen to leave the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and run as an independent candidate in 2024.
First and foremost, while I enjoy both a personal and professional relationship with Hon. Alan Kyerematen, characterized by mutual respect and a shared commitment to our nation’s progress, I must respectfully distance myself from his recent choice.

My dedication to the New Patriotic Party is deep-seated, rooted in our shared values and vision for a prosperous Ghana. The NPP’s strength has always been its unity and our ability to work together for the common good of our country.

Let us look forward to the future, keeping the best interests of our party and our beloved Ghana at heart.
With determination and unity, we can continue to work towards a brighter future for all Ghanaians.
    Best regards,

    ABENA OSEI-ASARE (MP)
    DEPUTY FINANCE MINISTER

  • Alan’s resignation won’t have significant impact on Bawumia – Nana Akomea

Alan’s resignation won’t have significant impact on Bawumia – Nana Akomea

The spokesperson for the Vice President’s campaign team, Nana Komea, has expressed confidence that Alan Kyerematen’s departure from the NPP will not adversely affect Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s prospects if he emerges victorious in the party’s primaries to lead.

Nana Komea emphasized that the breakaway move would have no significant impact on the party, dismissing any claims suggesting otherwise as mere speculation. He noted that during the Super Delegates Conference, they did not observe any significant shift in voter sentiment.

During an interview on Joy FM’s Top Story on Monday, Nana Akomea underscored the importance of how their candidate effectively communicates their campaign message to both the party’s delegates and the wider Ghanaian electorate. Ultimately, their focus is on winning the upcoming presidential race scheduled for November 4.

“Looking at what is happening in the past within the NPP with one or two personalities breaking away, what is happening in other parties where key personalities broke away, we don’t think that this is going to have any significant impact on the electoral fortunes of Dr Bawumia,” he told host, Evans Mensah.

This development follows Mr. Kyerematen’s recent announcement of his decision to officially part ways with the NPP. He declared his intention to run as an independent presidential candidate in the upcoming 2024 election.

He explained, “My decision to contest as an Independent Candidate will not destroy the Party, but instead provide the Party an opportunity to participate in a Government of National Unity in the future, and avoid the risk of going into opposition with no dividends, in what arguably will be a difficult general election in 2024.”

In response to the resignation, he expressed a sense of disappointment regarding Mr. Kyerematen’s choice. He noted that Mr. Kyerematen had been a dedicated and involved member of the party since his initial affiliation.

Nevertheless, he acknowledged that such departures have occurred periodically over the years, making it a familiar occurrence.

“If we go back into history, we have had similar incidents across parties, across political parties. In the lead-up to the 2000 election with candidate Kufuor, there was a breakaway from the party by some leading personalities at that time and they formed a party called UGM.”

“And if you also remember even the campaign manager of President Kufuor also broke away from the party and then joined the NDC but the NPP under Kufuor at that time still won the 2000 election,” he explained.

Black Queens’ wins in last six games is due to hard work – Coach

Nora Hauptle, the head coach of the Black Queens, has shed light on her team’s remarkable performance since assuming her role.

During her tenure as the Swiss tactician, the Ghana senior women’s national team has maintained an impressive unbeaten streak of six games, scoring over 20 goals during this period.

In their recent encounter, Coach Nora Hauptle led the Black Queens to a resounding 7-0 victory over Rwanda in the qualifiers for the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations tournament.

Looking ahead to the reverse fixture, Coach Nora Hauptle attributed the team’s success to their unwavering dedication and hard work.

“I can say the secret behind the gradual improvement of the team is putting in lot of work but I need to congratulate the players for taking the right decisions on the pitch,” Coach Nora Hauptle said.

She continued, “I have a great staff with professional analysis of the game with individual talks as well. We are proud that we scored so many goals and even more proud to have clean sheets. Our game plan worked and the players transmitted it very well.”

The Accra Sports Stadium is set to host the clash between Ghana’s Black Queens and Rwanda on Tuesday, September 26, with the game scheduled to commence at 4 pm.

  • Madina MP presents bill to scrap off 15% sanitary pad tax

Madina MP presents bill to scrap off 15% sanitary pad tax

A private member of Parliament has introduced a bill aimed at amending the Value Added Tax (VAT) regulations to eliminate the 15 percent VAT imposed on menstrual hygiene products.

This proposed bill seeks to make modifications to the VAT (Amendment) Act of 2022 (Act 1082) to exempt sanitary pads and tampons from VAT.

Additionally, the bill aims to advocate for the reclassification of the existing 20 percent import tax on final consumer goods, designating them as zero-rated essential social goods. It also seeks to prohibit any future taxation of such essential social goods.

Francis-Xavier Sosu, a Member of Parliament representing the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for Madina, formally presented this bill to the Clerk of Parliament last Thursday. In the accompanying memorandum, which provides the rationale for introducing the bill, Mr. Sosu, a human rights lawyer, emphasized the global challenges faced by many women and girls in managing menstruation.

He clarified that menstrual hygiene management (MHM) involves the use of clean materials to absorb menstrual blood, with the ability to change them privately, safely, hygienically, and as often as necessary throughout the menstrual cycle. Mr. Sosu argued that the failure to address the menstrual hygiene needs of women and girls could have significant repercussions for basic hygiene, sanitation, and reproductive health, ultimately impacting the country’s progress toward achieving Sustainable Development Goals one, three, four, five, six, and ten.

These Sustainable Development Goals encompass various critical areas, including eradicating poverty, promoting good health and well-being, ensuring quality education, advancing gender equality, enhancing access to clean water and sanitation, and reducing inequalities.

“Despite the fact that about a quarter of the world’s population menstruates, 500 million people have been left without access to menstrual hygiene products, leading to period poverty”.

“Period poverty, thus refers to the struggle to afford menstrual products, and the increased economic vulnerability menstruating people face due to the financial burden posed by menstrual supplies,” the MP, who is also one of the legislators who sponsored the Criminal Offences (Amendment) Bill, 2022 which was passed to scrap the death penalty and criminalised accusation of anyone as  witchcraft.

Citing reputable global sources, Mr. Sosu highlighted several significant factors that hinder effective menstrual management among schoolgirls in low- and middle-income countries. These factors include a lack of adequate knowledge about menstrual issues among schoolgirls, insufficient access to suitable water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) facilities, limited availability of sanitary kits, and the presence of cultural barriers.

Furthermore, Mr. Sosu pointed out that on a global scale, women were twice as likely as men to report instances of discrimination based on their gender.

Given that women constitute the majority of Ghana’s population, accounting for 15.6 million people or 50.7 percent of the population according to the 2021 Population and Housing Census, and with approximately 85 percent of women relying on sanitary pads as their primary menstrual hygiene management (MHM) material, Mr. Sosu argued that the imposition of taxes on sanitary products did not align with the best interests of this demographic.

“Imposing taxes on sanitation pads which is as a result of their menstrual cycle which is a natural phenomenon is unfair, discriminatory and violates both national law (Article 17 of the 1992 Constitution) and various international laws and treaties such as Article 2 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, Articles 24(1) and 26 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), the Convention on Rights of Children, and the Convention on the Elimination of All forms of Discrimination against Women, among others,” Mr Sosu said.

The MP highlighted examples from various countries that have taken progressive steps to eliminate taxes on menstrual products, underscoring the feasibility of such actions.

Mr. Sosu pointed out that Scotland made history in 2020 by becoming the first country worldwide to provide free sanitary products to all women. Additionally, he noted that Kenya took a pioneering step in 2004 by becoming the first country to abolish import taxes on sanitary products.

Moreover, Mr. Sosu mentioned several other countries, including Canada, Australia, India, Jamaica, Nicaragua, Nigeria, Lebanon, Malaysia, Colombia, South Africa, Namibia, and Rwanda, as nations that have implemented measures to remove taxes on “period products.”

On June 23 of the current year, the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, expressed strong disapproval of the imposition of taxes on sanitary pads in Ghana.

He described the passage of laws by Parliament to impose the tax on sanitary pads as “unconscionable and a cardinal sin.”

“This House should not have allowed it at all. You know the impact of that law on human resource development and the development of this country is immeasurable. Why should we pass a law imposing tax on sanitary pads? We have to take immediate action to prevent whoever is the minister and is proposing it to take it off,” Mr Bagbin said.

  • Ghana to face fuel shortage in coming days?

Ghana to face fuel shortage in coming days?

Ghana faces the imminent threat of fuel shortages as the Tanker Owners Union contemplates suspending fuel transportation operations across the nation.

Their concern revolves around allegations that foreign nationals have encroached upon their industry.

In accordance with local content laws and the deregulation of the petroleum sector, the responsibility of hauling petroleum products within the country is exclusively reserved for indigenous Ghanaian companies.

However, the Union has raised alarms about the involvement of a Chinese firm, Sentuo, which is associated with the construction of an Oil Refinery in Tema. According to the Union, Sentuo has introduced tankers to facilitate the local offloading of petroleum products.

Kwame Jantuah, a member of the Union, expressed their discontent, emphasizing that if swift corrective measures are not taken, they will be compelled to withdraw their services. He stressed that this action represents their final recourse in addressing the situation.

This, he added “will obviously bring shortages of fuel in the country.”

“The moment we deregulated, at the time it was GNPC distributing, the moment we deregulated, it was made that that portion should be given to Ghanaians so if you see, Shell, BP has tankers which do not belong to them but because we pick for them we paint our tankers with their emblem but they don’t own the tankers.

“So why should the refinery now say that they have their tankers and distributing? Do TOR, NPA, and BDCs have their own tankers? They all depend on us so if you are coming in, you are going to kill our business and we have to fight for it,” he said.

Expressing concerns over the potential loss of their livelihoods, he emphasized that his fellow union members are grappling with both fear and frustration as they confront this unfolding situation. Many of them have resorted to taking loans to finance the purchase of the trucks utilized for fuel transportation. Currently, more than 5,000 of their tanker trucks sit idle due to the scarcity of fuel available for transport.

Consequently, they have issued a plea to the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) to take swift action in order to avert what could potentially escalate into a nationwide crisis. Meanwhile, there are reports indicating that the NPA is engaging with various stakeholders involved in this matter.

    Highlights of #OccupyJulorBiHouse protest

Organisers of the #OccupyJulorBiHouse protest, Democracy Hub, led by Oliver Barker-Vormawor have successfully ended their three-day protest which commenced on Thursday, September 21, 2023.

The aim of the protest is to compel the government to address the current economic hardships Ghanaians are facing under the current Akufo-Addo-led government.

On Day 1 of the demonstration, protestors were not able to do much as 49 individuals within the vicinity of the Jubilee House and the 37 Military Hospital area were arrested by the Police for unlawful assembly, which the Police said violated the Public Order Act.

This action followed an application filed by the Police at the court on the eve of the protest to halt the demonstration.

Following the arrest, reports of assault against the protestors, including Ghanaian journalist, Bridget Otoo emerged on social media, with many citizens calling for calm. Among those reportedly arrested were a BBC journalist and his cameraman. Several artistes such as Cina Soul and KiDi showed solidarity as they sided with the protestors.

But the police in a press statement, refuted the claim, noting that its officers had not detained a male journalist with the BBC.

The Police clarified that two individuals who were among a group picked up were let go after they identified themselves as journalists.

24 hours later, after the arrest, there were reports that some protestors who were detained had been released. Media reports were not able to provide the specific number of protestors released.

Following the challenges faced during the first day of the protest, it was expected that many would not show up for Day 2 of the protest, but that was not the case.

On Friday, September 22, more individuals trooped to the streets including artistes such as EL, KelvnBoy, and socialite Efia Odo. They encouraged other celebrities to join the protestors and call for the immediate fixing of the economy.

On Day 2 of the protest, the Police formed a human barricade to prevent the protestors from marching to the Jubilee House.

The protestors, while in the rain, responded by chanting the lyrics of the Ghana national anthem, assuring the government of the youth’s determination to ensure their challenges are resolved.

They held placards with inscriptions that compared Ghana’s minimum wage of GHS14.88 to services such as haircuts, which cost GHS30, and prices of goods, including a sanitary pad and a loaf of bread, which averagely cost GHS15.

There were no arrests or casualties reported on the second day of the protest.

On Saturday, September 23, many more Ghanaians came out to protest. Just like on Day 2 of the protest, the Police prevented the demonstrators from heading to the Jubilee House.

More celebrities showed up to register their displeasure with the government. Dancehall artiste, Stonebwoy thrilled the protestors to some of his hit songs.

Day 3 ended without any casualties, bringing the 3-day protest to a successful end.

Following the protest, the Police Management Board (POMAB) has summoned COP Sayibu Gariba, the Accra Regional Police Commander, to provide explanations regarding the use of excessive force against participants in the #OccupyJulorbiHouse protest.

Again, the Police has expressed gratitude to members of the public, especially those in Accra, for their support and understanding while we worked within our mandate to maintain law and order during the demonstration.

The Service has also apologized to members of the public who were inconvenienced in one way or the other, especially those who were caught up in the vehicular holdups during the demonstration.

Meanwhile, the Police has announced plans to meet with the organizers of the protest for a debriefing session with the aim of fostering a more fruitful engagement in the future.

  • NPP has been hijacked by certain people – Alan

NPP has been hijacked by certain people – Alan

Former member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Alan Kyerematen, has lamented the current status of the ruling party, which he says has been corrupted by some of its leaders and elders.

On Monday, September 25, Mr Kyerematen, who withdrew from the party’s presidential race, resigned from the NPP.

He noted the change in core values of the NPP as one of the reasons behind his resignation.

According to the former Trade Minister, he devoted the best part of his professional career to serving the party owing to “the long-standing traditions of its antecedents, predicated on fairness, equity, probity, accountability, and transparency.”

However, he says, the traditions no longer stand as the “Party has been hijacked by a selected group of Party leaders and elders, government appointees, “behind the curtain power brokers” and some unscrupulous Party apparatchiks.”

He added, “the NPP as it exists now has very little resemblance to the Party that I joined in 1992 and helped to nurture.”

For Mr Kyerematen, it was his fervent wish to use the vehicle of the Party to bring his God given talents, experience, and knowledge acquired both locally and internationally over a period of 46 years, to serve Ghana at the highest level of executive authority on the ticket of the NPP, however, that would not be the case.

Mr Kyerematen also noted that he feels his services and contributions to the Party are not appreciated, and that his continuous stay in the Party will create further tension and division, which is an exact replay of circumstances that led to his decision to resign from the Party in 2008.

Mr Kyerematen resigned from the party in 2008 following challenges with its 2007 presidential primaries. He claimed that his supporters were attacked and treated as outcasts.

  • My services in the NPP are not appreciated – Alan

My services in the NPP are not appreciated – Alan

Alan Kyerematen, a former presidential aspirant of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has bemoaned how his efforts towards the growth of the NPP were taken for granted and never duly recognised.

He registered his displeasure with how the NPP has allegedly treated him when he announced his resignation from the NPP today, September 25, 2023.

According to Mr Kyerematen, this unwarranted treatment stems from the hijacking of the party by some leaders and government appointees, who have ensured that the party veers off the aims and objectives of its founding fathers.

“I have devoted the best part of my professional career to serving the Party, and I still believe in the vision of the founding fathers of the Party. However, the NPP as it exists now has very little resemblance to the Party that I joined in 1992 and helped to nurture. The Party has been hijacked by a selected group of Party leaders and elders, government appointees, “behind the curtain power brokers” and some unscrupulous Party apparatchiks.”

He therefore said: “It is abundantly clear to me, that my services and contributions to the Party are not appreciated, and that my continuous stay in the Party will create further tension and division, which is an exact replay of circumstances that led to my decision to resign from the Party in 2008.”

According to Mr Kyerematen, it was his fervent wish to use the vehicle of the Party to bring his God given talents, experience, and knowledge acquired both locally and internationally over a period of 46 years, to serve the country at the highest level of executive authority.

He further accused the party of attacking his supporters since 2008 when he resigned from the party following challenges with its 2007 presidential primaries.

  • I rejected cabinet ministerial appointment from Kufuor – Alan

I rejected cabinet ministerial appointment from Kufuor – Alan

Former Trade Minister, Alan Kyerematen, has recounted when he refused a cabinet ministerial appointment by former President John Agyekum Kufuor, whom he once contested against during a presidential primaries hosted by the New Patriotic Party in 1996.

During the 1996 Presidential Primaries, he contested alongside leading personalities in the Party such as Professor Adu Boahen, Mr. J. A.

Between 2003 and 2007, he led the Government’s programme for enhancing private sector development and ushering a Golden Age of Business in Ghana.

  • My supporters are treated as outcasts – Alan

My supporters are treated as outcasts – Alan

Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) member, Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, has recounted that during his time in the party, his supporters faced attacks and were treated as outcasts following the party’s 2007 presidential primaries.

In 2007, Mr. Kyerematen ran for the party’s flagbearer position alongside 16 other candidates, including the current President, Nana Akufo-Addo. Nana Akufo-Addo emerged as the winner, with Mr. Kyerematen as the runner-up. According to the party’s electoral process, the two were slated for a second-round ballot.

However, Mr. Kyerematen declined to contest and instead allowed Nana Akufo-Addo to be selected as the NPP’s flagbearer for the 2008 general elections.

According to the former Trade Minister, he did this to “avoid a further deterioration of peace in an already divided Party.”

Nonetheless, the gesture he made was met with opposition as “there were very serious post-primary attacks on my
supporters all over the country, and an open show of hostility.”

“Some of my supporters were victims of brutalities and continue to bear the scars of that treatment,” he added.

Mr Kyerematen, while announcing his recent resignation from the party at a press conference in Accra today, noted that he drew the attention of the leadership of the party, however, “my representations went unheeded.”

As a result of this, he decided to resign from the NPP “in protest against the blatant alienation of my supporters, orchestrated by elements aligned to the leadership of the Party.”

In 1992, when the New Patriotic Party (NPP) was established, a group of young dynamic Business Executives and Professionals came together to establish the Young Executives Forum (YEF) under my Chairmanship. The YEF since 1992, became the financial backbone of the Party and provided significant financial resources to support the Party in all its endeavours, including the seed fund for the purchase of the Party’s first national headquarters building.

As Chairman of the YEF, I had the privilege of serving as a member of the National Executive Committee and the National Council of the Party. In addition to this, I served as a leading member of various Committees of the Party.

Alan Kyerematen condemns #OccupyJulorbiHouse police brutality

Former Trade Minister, John Alan Kyerematen, has criticised the Police Service over the unmerited actions meted out to #OccupyJulorBiHouse protestors by its officers.

On Day 1 of the demonstration, protestors were not able to do much as 49 individuals within the vicinity of the Jubilee House and the 37 Military Hospital area were arrested by the Police for unlawful assembly which the Police said violated of the Public Order Act.

But the police in a press statement refuted the claim, noting that its officers had not detained a male journalist with the BBC.

The Police clarified that two individuals who were among a group picked up were let go after they identified themselves as journalists.

24 hours later after the arrest, there were reports that some protestors who were detained had been released. Media reports were not able to provide the specific number of protestors released.

Reacting to the incident, said “the initial reaction of the Police in manhandling some protestors is not the solution to the problem.”

He made the utterance during a press conference at the Movenpick Ambassador Hotel in Accra on September 25, 2023, when he announced his resignation from the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

In his opinion, the protest stems from the pervasive employment crisis, which he says is gradually becoming a national security
    threat.

According to Mr Kyterematen, “every year over 300,000 (three hundred thousand) graduates from tertiary institutions in Ghana, excluding those from secondary institutions, enter the job market with little or no hope of finding a job.”

He ruled out public sector employment as it is currently “overbloated.”.

For Mr Kyerematen, what Ghana needs now is a change, which will provide long-lasting solutions to the challenges confronting the country.

Meanwhile, the Police Management Board (POMAB) has summoned COP Sayibu Gariba, the Accra Regional Police Commander, to provide explanations regarding the use of excessive force against participants in the #OccupyJulorbiHouse protest.

KalyJay, Efia Odo lead tweeps to hijack NPP’s #WeAreNPP

Social media influencer, KalyJay and Ghanaian actress Efia Odo have intercepted an agenda by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) that seeks to advertise the party in a good light.

#WeAreNPP speaks of the achievements chalked by the NPP and why the party should be retained in 2024 to continue its work.

But KalyJay and Efia Odo are now leading netizens to use the same hashtag to shame the government for its shortfalls.

The former has called on aggrieved Ghanaians to “hijack the hashtag”.

And just as requested, tweeps in a number of tweets have brought to light issues of flooding, poor healthcare system, bad roads that have led to road carnage, and unfavorable conditions in schools within their jurisdiction.

Alan’s withdrawal from the party is ‘unfortunate’ – NPP

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has noted that it will address the resignation of former presidential aspirant, John Alan Kyerematen on Tuesday.

In a press statement issued by General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, the party deemed Mr Kyerematen’s resignation “unfortunate”.

Mr Kyerematen announced his resignation when he addressed the country during a press conference at the Movenpick Ambassador Hotel in Accra today, September 25, 2023.

He noted that he no longer recognizes the NPP, which has been unfair to himself and his supporters, as its current aims and agenda no longer reflect what the founding fathers had hoped to achieve.

The leadership of the party has meanwhile urged the rank and file of our great Party to remain calm and await an official address by the Party to Mr. Kyerematen’s resignation at 14:00 p.m. tomorrow at the Party headquarters.

  • My supporters and I have been attacked for so many years – Alan

My supporters and I have been attacked for so many years – Alan

Mr Alan Kyerematen, who once sided with the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has revealed the maltreatment he and his supporters faced during his active days with the party.

He recounted his sufferings when he announced his resignation from the NPP during a press conference at the Movenpick Ambassador Hotel in Accra today, September 25, 2023.

According to Mr Kyerematen, the attacks against him and his fan base have led him to part ways with the ruling party seeking to retain power in the 2024 general elections.

The former Trade Minister noted that the attacks began as far back as 2008 after the party’s 2007 presidential primaries.

He noted that despite stepping down for Nana Akufo-Addo (now current president) to be elected flagbeaer, he made was met with opposition as “there were very serious post-primary attacks on my supporters all over the country, and an open show of hostility.”

However, he returned to the party following talks with the Reconciliation Committee. Nonetheless, the attacks, he said continued unabated.

“The protests and reactions from the rank and file of the Party at that time from all over the country, compelled the then Chairman of the Party to constitute a Reconciliation Committee chaired by the then immediate past Chairman of the Party, Ambassador Samuel Odoi Sykes. The Committee upheld all my submissions and prevailed upon me to rescind my decision to resign, which I did, with the firm promise to address all the contentious issues I had raised in my notice of resignation.

“As a loyal member of the Party, I accepted the plea of the party leadership and joined the campaign team of then Candidate Akufo-Addo all over the country, providing exceptional support to his campaign.

“Unfortunately, however, all the promises made by the Party leadership were never fulfilled, and indeed the divisive and hostile attacks on my person and my supporters remained for several years thereafter, and have continued to date. It is common knowledge that any Party member who is associated directly or indirectly with Alan, is treated with disdain and considered an outcast,” he said.

  • My supporters were attacked after I conceded to Akufo-Addo – Alan

My supporters were attacked after I conceded to Akufo-Addo – Alan

Former member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, has noted that while with the party, his supporters were subjected to attacks following the party’s 2007 presidential primaries.

In 2007, Mr Kyerematen contested for the flagbearership title with 16 others, including current President Nana Akufo-Addo.

Nana Akufo-Addo came first, and Mr Kyerematen was the runner-up and according to the rules of the party’s electoral process, the two were programmed for a second run ballot.

However, he refused to contest and allowed Nana Akufo-Addo to be chosen as the NPP’s flagbearer in the 2008 general elections.

  • Alan Kyerematen to contest as Independent candidate, resigns from NPP

Alan Kyerematen to contest as Independent candidate, resigns from NPP

Former presidential aspirant for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), John Alan Kyeremanten, has announced his resignation from the ruling party following the Super Delegates Conference to determine the party’s flagbearer.

Mr Kyerematen announced his decision when he addressed the country during a press conference at the Movenpick Ambassador Hotel in Accra today, September 25, 2023.

He noted that he no longer recognises the NPP, which has been unfair to himself and his supporters, as its current aims and agenda no longer reflect what the founding fathers had hoped to achieve.

According to the former Trade Minister, he will contest for the office of president as an independent candidate in 2024.

“It was my fervent wish to use the vehicle of the Party to bring my God given talents, experience, and knowledge acquired both locally and internationally over a period of 46 years, to serve our dear nation, Ghana at the highest level of executive authority.

Ahead of this much-anticipated address, there had been widespread speculation that the former Trade Minister might sever ties with the NPP and opt to pursue his presidential ambitions as an independent candidate in the upcoming 2024 general elections.

Mr Kyerematen was among the contenders for the NPP flagbearer position, but on September 5, he declared his withdrawal from the race, citing reasons such as electoral irregularities, unfair treatment, and bias during the super delegates’ conference held on August 26.

In a press statement, he said: “After having carefully analysed the results of the said elections, it is absolutely clear to me from events leading to, during and after the elections, that the Special Delegates Conference was strategically and tactically skewed in favour of one particular Aspirant. The pronouncements made by some leading Members of our Party both before and after the elections, also lend weight to my observations.

Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia won the superdelegates conference held on August 26, with a total of 629 votes, representing 68.15% of the total valid votes.

Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong came in second with 132 votes, or 14.30% while former Trade Minister Alan Kyerematen placed third with 95 votes, or 10.29%.

With Mr Kyerematen out the race, Mr Kennedy Agyapong, Dr Afriyie Akoto and Francis Addai-Nimo will contest against Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, who is considered the front runner in the party’s presidential elections.

Mr Kyerematen first resigned from the party in 2008 following attacks on his supporters after the NPP held its 2007 presidential primaries.

The police still has our items – Protester who was arrested and released claims

A male protestor who has been released following his arrest by the police on Day 1 of the #OccupyJulorBiHouse protest has accused the police of confiscating his mobile phones despite gaining his freedom.

When asked by JoyNews journalist Benjamin Akakpo to confirm whether or not his phone was seized by the Police, the protestor identified as Darko said “Yes”.

He then quickly added, “It is still with the police. It has not been returned yet. I still have my shirt with them. I have my cap with them and my two phones.”

According to him, he had been assured by the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr George Akuffo Dampare that he would receive his items upon his arrival at the police’s central command, however, that was not the case.

“When I met the IGP, he said when I’m free I can go there for it. I got there (Central Command) and I was told that unless the regional command is present, they won’t give my items to me. I think apart from me and one other guy, everyone has gotten their devices,” he added.

He further narrated the maltreatment he and his comrades faced when they were detained by the Police.

“When we got to the regional command, we were instructed to sit on the floor, which we said we won’t because we don’t know why they hassled us to the bus.

“These Policemen without uniforms started attacking us. So they forcefully took our phones from us, pushed us into an office and started assaulting us. Dela Goldheart was slapped on the hand with a metal bar. It was a slub of metal.

One of our protestors was also slapped by a police officer inside the office and we couldn’t record any of this because we didn’t have our phones with us. They went as far as seizing my bank card, Ghana card,” he narrated.

Darko noted that he would be able to identify the officers if given the opportunity.

“One of them actually works with the Central Command. He was there and he witnessed everything. He is called Officer Bani. He was a witness to everything and he didn’t do anything to stop what was happening within that office.

On Day 1 of the demonstration (September 21, 2023), protestors were not able to do much as 49 individuals within the vicinity of the Jubilee House and the 37 Military Hospital area were arrested by the Police for unlawful assembly which the Police said violated of the Public Order Act.

  • #OccupyJulorBiHouse protest: Bridget Otoo gives detailed account of police attack on her

#OccupyJulorBiHouse protest: Bridget Otoo gives detailed account of police attack on her

Ghanaian TV personality and journalist, Bridget Otoo, has shared her side of the story on the alleged maltreatment meted to her by some officers of the Ghana Police Service during the just-ended #OccupyJulorBiHouse protest.

She touched on the genesis of the reported assault and how she managed to come out unscathed during an interview on JoyNews on Monday, September 25, 2023.

Bridget Otoo last Thursday, September 21, participated in the three-day #OccupyJulorBiHouse to demand a resolution to the ongoing economic crisis being faced under the Akufo-Addo-led government.

The first day of the protest faced a stalemate as the police whisked away 49 protestors, arguing that they had breached the Public Order Act for illegally converging after it had filed an injunction on the protest.

During the arrest, Bridget Otoo was reportedly assaulted by some officers when she showed up at the police station with a few other protestors.

On why she found herself in such a position, Bridget revealed that she sought to use herself as surety for individuals who had been arrested to be released.

“As a concerned citizen, I wanted to take part of the protest because there were so many things that bothers me as a person and as a journalist. Being able to speak freely is very important to me. Having my colleagues take part in a protest.

So I get there but the protest is over because they have arrested about 49 of them, but I thought that I was a citizen in good standing. I could go there and use my name to act as surety to get bail. I met a young woman whose son had also been taken in there and I thought that having hosted you, the Police in the past, I have some sort of currency, at the very least to see where they had kept these people.”

However, that did not work as she was not allowed to.

Following the police’s refusal, Bridget stated that she stood outside the police station and was later approached by one individual she believes is a citizen journalist. While engaging the man she identified as George for a Twitter space on the protest, she was ‘attacked’ by an officer.

She narrated: “So I stood outside and then a gentleman approached me, a gentleman called George and he and I are going to sue the Police officer who attacked me in the coming weeks. He approaches me with a phone and asks me to join a Twitter space on the #OccupyJulorBiHouse and I said why not, to tell him why I was there. So I was on there talking about my frustration, what I want to see changed and I don’t want a situation where I’ll talk about journalist’s condition of service and I will be silenced or a politician will say, okay, we don’t like this presenter. I have been a victim of that, where a politician will say take her out. I really want those things to stop. So while I was on there, on my blind side, this guy charges at us. And I have to honest and tell you. At the time when it happened, I thought they were grabbing the guys around me because I was wondering what wrong could I have possibly done for anyone to do this. At the time, I didn’t know who he was, but he was maybe a citizen journalist, but he was acting more like a journalist.”

She continued: “So while I was on there, talking, that was when the policeman charged at us. He was in plain clothes. Now we have identified him, but on that day, he wasn’t in uniform.”

Bridget noted that she was not aware that she was the one the police officer came for.

“So I was completely blindsided, no idea that I was the one who was under attack until I saw the video of them pushing. So the guy holds on to my bag and I was also being pushed along. I thought, what could I have done. So in pulling, they ripped by shirt and my stomach was bare. Fortunately there was another guy who gave me a shawl to wrap around my waist.”

According to her, she believes she was being pushed to prevent the public from witnessing further assault she would be subjected to.

“The reason he was pushing me was very simple. When they push you inside, like the camera captured, they beat you up and they beat the gentleman up. He got cuts behind him.

I think when he got to the gate, the YK Mensah guy knew who I was so I’m sure that’s why he relaxed a bit. Cos he would have pulled me in further in but he relaxed,” she said.

Meanwhile, Bridget Otoo has announced plans to file a class action suit against the said officer who allegedly assaulted her.

Police to meet organisers of #OccupyJulorBiHouse protest for debriefing session

The Police has announced plans to meet with the organizers of the #OccupyJulorBiHouse protest, Democracy Hub, for a debriefing session.

According to the police, this is with the aim of fostering a more fruitful engagement in the future.

On Day 1 of the demonstration (September 21), protestors were not able to do much as 49 individuals within the vicinity of the Jubilee House and the 37 Military Hospital area were arrested by the Police for unlawful assembly which the Police said violated of the Public Order Act.

The Service has also apologized to members of the public who were inconvenienced in one way or the other, especially those who were caught up in the vehicular holdups during the demonstration.

Meanwhile, the Police has assured that it is not against any person or group of persons who may want to demonstrate.

“We have a track record of providing security for demonstrations in the past and would continue to do so within the confines of the law,” the Police added.

  • Identify safe spots during heavy rainfall – NADMO urges public

Identify safe spots during heavy rainfall – NADMO urges public

The Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), George Ayisi, has entreated members of the general public to immediately search for havens when it begins to pour heavily.

He made this appeal after the Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) indicated that there will be more rain in the coming days.

“We are in constant touch with GMeT and they keep updating us every time. They say the rains are going to be severe, they are going to be heavy so we should be careful,” Mr Ayisi noted.

The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMeT) has issued a warning that Accra, the country’s capital, is at risk of flooding whenever rainfall exceeds 50 millimeters.

This advisory follows the substantial downpour last Friday, which resulted in extensive flooding in various parts of Accra. Areas severely affected included the Tema Motorway, Kwame Nkrumah Interchange, Kaneshie, North Kaneshie, Alajo, Adabraka, Accra Central, Tema, Tema station-Accra, Osu, and others.

The heavy rainfall led to the inundation of many homes and vehicles, with drainage systems overflowing and road potholes expanding and deepening.
