Communication Director of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Sylvester Soprano Sarpong, has questioned the rationale behind Chief Daniel Bugri Naabu’s decision to record and allegedly put out an audio tape that delves into plans to oust the Inspector Ghana of Police (IGP) Dr George Akuffo Dampare.
According to Mr Sarpong, he holds the assertion that Mr Bugri disclosed such a sensitive issue to the public just for attention.
He explained that in his capacity as Chief, Bugri Naabu had a fiduciary duty (ie. obligation a party has to act in another party’s best interest), hence should have kept such issues private.
“There is the element of Attorney-client privilege. If you go and disclose something to a leader who is a Chief, you have a certain Attorney-client privilege. So the Whiteman would say Bugri Naabu has fiduciary duty to keep such conversation private. But he has released such information to the public. So when I look at him, I ask myself that is the case that Bugri Naabu is an attention seeker, he wants to trend in Facebook. What exactly caused him to do this?
Now he has made us aware that in Ghana, we have the NDC Police and NPP Police, NDC Immigration officer and NPP Immigration Officer,” he said during an interview on Neat FM.
In July this year, an audio purportedly recorded by former NPP Northern Regional Chairman, Chief Daniel Bugri Naabu, surfaced on social media. Some voices were heard plotting the ousting of the IGP, noting that the New Patriotic Party would not be able to retain power come 2024 general elections should Dr Dampare remain in post.
The matter garnered national concern, prompting Speaker Alban Bagbin to set up an ad hoc committee, chaired by Samuel Atta Akyea to probe the matter.
The committee, for about a week, has engaged four accused persons involved in the scandal. Bugri Naabu who first faced the committee revealed that he instructed an individual to record his conversation with Commissioner of Police (COP) George Alex Mensah, Superintendent Emmanuel Eric Gyebi and Superintendent George Lysander Asare, to serve as evidence when he presents his case to the President.
When the three officers came before the Parliamentary Committee, they refuted claims of planning to oust the IGP. COP Alex Mensah and Superintendent George Asare informed the committee that the audio currently in its possession has been doctored.
The two officers further noted that Dr George Akuffo Dampare was the mastermind behind the leaked tape. They also accused the IGP of having the original audio in his possession.
The matter is still being investigated by the Parliamentary Committee.
This revelation and a recent comment by former President John Dramani Mahama, according to Mr Sarpong have convinced him of the divisive institutions in the country.
“They always said this, but we never believed it, and now former President Mahama has come to confirm it so I believe now. Now we have NPP judge and NDC judge. So the NDC and NPP are the ruin of this country. They are the authors of our current predicament.”
Former President John Dramani Mahama has claimed that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government has selected individuals with close ties to the ruling party to hold positions within the judiciary.
Mr Mahama contended that President Akufo-Addo’s appointments to the judiciary seem to be a deliberate strategy aimed at installing judges who might lean toward his interests once his tenure ends.
The 2024 National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer proposed that the president’s actions are designed to protect himself from accountability once he finishes his term in office.
Mr. Mahama said: “Currently, the judiciary is packed with NPP-inclined judges because this government has carried out a deliberate policy of putting their people onto the bench.”
“He has appointed the biggest number of judges onto the bench, it is more than 80 towards 100 and counting. You can see what the current president has done. He has packed the court, and we know they have packed the court because they want to avoid accountability after they have left office.”
He made this assertion while addressing the closing ceremony of the 3rd Annual Lawyers Conference of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) on Saturday, September 2.
A book titled “The Lady In Boots,” authored by the late Major General (Maj Gen) Constance Edjeani-Afenu (Rtd), was launched on September 6, 2023, at the Burma Hall in Burma Camp, Accra.

Veteran journalist, Kwame Sefa Kayi, has made a humorous remark about individuals with the name ‘Naabu.’
According to Mr Sefa Kayi, people with the aforementioned name tend to be bothersome wherever they find themselves, as the name Naabu is used to refer to ‘mouth’ in the Ga language.
He further explained that troubles come whenever the mouth makes utterances that are deemed to be controversial.
His remark on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo Show stems from controversies involving the former Northern Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, Bugri Naabu.
“In Ga, Naabu means mouth. I know Bugri Naabu is a Muslim and not a Ga. I want to know where the name Naabu came from because the mouth as we know comes with trouble. Someone who is called Naabu always being trouble. Could it be a nickname?” Mr Sefa Kayi remarked that it was a light-hearted jab.
Chief Bugri Naabu is alleged to be the individual behind a leaked tape that revealed plans to oust the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr George Akuffo Dampare.
While that case is being probed by a Parliamentary Committee set up by Speaker Alban Bagbin, Chief Bugri Naabu has found himself in what could be classified as a scandal.
A fresh set of recordings has emerged on social media, intensifying the controversy surrounding the alleged conspiracy to remove the incumbent Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare.
These newly surfaced tapes consist of video recordings featuring Bugri Naabu, the former Northern Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, engaged in various conversations with unidentified individuals. These conversations encompass discussions of several schemes.
One of the video clips captures Bugri Naabu seated in his office while an unidentified individual accuses him of involvement in a contract kickback scheme, where he is alleged to have shortchanged them and others.
“The contract was given to Ben Kofi and Ben Kofi gave the contract to him. So it is not that me and him we know about IGP giving him the contract. That contract didn’t come, look at what they are telling me now.
“This particular contract, the job was given to Ben Kofi and Ben Kofi also intend subletting it to him… so tell me, are you halting any money for me to give to the boys or what?
“Because you said you got some calls from even vice president’s office people called you. Me I don’t know how they got your number but I called your sister and your sister told me the contract was ready, they are now going to do production.
“Now, I went to IG (Inspector General), IG too says the contract is completed. If you don’t want trouble, bring the money for me to give to the boys. Otherwise, I cannot guarantee you, the problem can come.
Bugri Naabu Caught on camera fighting over an alleged contract Money from IGP Dampare. This may affirm what COP Mensah said that the IGP and Bugri Naabu set him and the other officers up. pic.twitter.com/4PhfgqOlqx
“So he told me that, today is Monday, he said today he is going to meet Ben Kofi, the person the contract was awarded to, they will discuss it and see if they can get some money,” Bugri Naabu could be heard saying.
Per reports, Chief Bugri Naabu is an informant for the Police Service. This was revealed when Bugri Naabu refused receiving payments from Dr. Akuffo Dampare’s payroll.
“Don’t tell me that he pays me GHC10,000; he doesn’t pay me, it’s the police… I don’t know, I receive GHC10,000 from the police and they tell me the security work I do as a paramount chief… when there is a problem I report to them,” Bugri Naabu is quoted to have said in the recently leaked video.
The High Court in Accra has issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Ghana Police Service, requiring them to amend the title of their injunction application.
This application sought to prevent the Minority in Parliament from protesting against the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Ernest Addison, and his two deputies.
In a ruling delivered today, Justice Edward Twum stated that the use of the title “Republic” in the application, as filed by the Police Service, was a mere oversight by the legal team representing the Police Service.
The Court acknowledged that the supporting documents submitted by the Police clarified their true intention, which was to act on behalf of the Inspector General of Police for the Police Service, a corporate entity with the legal capacity to initiate legal actions under the 1992 constitution, rather than the Attorney-General.
Justice Twum commended the lawyers representing the Minority in Parliament for their diligent scrutiny of the Police Service’s application. However, he emphasized that technicalities should not be exploited to delay the core matter, stressing the importance of fairness.
As a result, the Court granted the Police Service a seven-day period to revise the title of their application from “Republic” to “Inspector General of Police.”
The case has been adjourned to Monday, September 18, 2023. In the meantime, the Minority is scheduled to meet with the Accra Regional Police Command later today to discuss the logistical details of their demonstration. Originally scheduled for September 5, the protest was rescheduled to Tuesday, September 12, 2023, following the Court’s intervention.
Deputy Ranking Member of Parliament’s Committee on Food, Agriculture, and Cocoa Affairs, Dr. Godfred Seidu Jasaw, has called upon banks and financial institutions across various African countries to allocate funds dedicated to enhancing agricultural production and financing within the continent.
Dr. Jasaw emphasized that the absence of substantial investments in the agricultural sector could hinder efforts aimed at ensuring that African farmers are equipped to provide for future generations, particularly in the face of challenges posed by climate change and the imperative of food security.
He further asserted that failure to provide adequate funding could potentially lead to food shortages, malnutrition, and increased migration, thereby undermining the progress made over decades in terms of development and potentially jeopardizing the achievement of UN global development goals.
Dr. Jasaw urged banks to take proactive steps in providing sufficient financing to the agricultural sector.
He pointed out that in the case of Ghana, allocating a mere 6.7% of the budget to the sector falls significantly short of the Maputo Declaration’s recommendation of allocating at least 10% of the national budget to agriculture.
Dr. Jasaw suggested that even a contribution as low as two percent could be entrusted to the central government for this purpose.
Furthermore, he indicated that each country’s central bank should explore the possibility of incorporating this requirement into their policies governing the operations of local banks, thereby promoting greater investment in agriculture.
Speaking as a panelist in a roundtable discussion on ‘laws, policies, and regulations required for food systems transformation’ in Tanzania, he asserted “Can we look at in-country, across all countries, that financial institutions should be able to contribute some resources into a basket that will be held by the central government even if it is 2percent of their gross pro t, for production, nancing of food in the country along the value chain.
“If they can do that, it goes into a central pool and this money can be given to special financial institutions which will support agricultural value chains at a low-cost credit, at an interest rate that is maybe a single digit, that will be low cost enough for production in specific commodities that we can prioritise to be able to produce at a cost that is low enough to compete with the imported commodities that we bring in -rice, chicken…”
The government has consistently emphasized the imperative of diversifying the economy into agriculture. This commitment is evident through various budgetary policies, including initiatives such as Planting for Food and Jobs and fertilizer subsidies, which are geared toward bolstering the agricultural sector.
This year’s Africa’s Food Systems Forum 2023 Summit’s theme, “Recover, Regenerate, Act: Africa’s Solutions to Food Systems Transformation,” focuses on building back better food systems and food sovereignty with youth and women at the centre.
A car that had been stolen from a driveway in Toronto, Canada, has been located parked in Ghana, an astounding distance of approximately 8,500 kilometers from where it was originally taken.
This remarkable discovery unfolded during an investigation led by David Common, a journalist from CBC News, focusing on stolen vehicles in Canada. During the course of his inquiry, Common came across the car and found the original owner’s contact information, which led to the breakthrough.
Len Green, the car’s rightful owner, had experienced the theft of his vehicle in 2022 and had no knowledge of its whereabouts until receiving an unexpected call from Ghana, initiated by the CBC journalist.
During the phone call, Common informed Green, “I’m calling from CBC News. We’re doing an investigation into stolen vehicles, and I’m pretty sure I’m sitting in your vehicle in West Africa.”
Green was understandably shocked to learn that his stolen car had ended up so far from its original location, exclaiming “I can’t believe it … that’s crazy.”
The astonishing revelation was documented in a video shared on TikTok by CBC.

Within the same location, a group of journalists came across numerous other vehicles, many of which displayed Canadian license plates. Surprisingly, these vehicles still contained their provincial registration and insurance documents within the glove box.
All of these vehicles had been reported stolen from Ontario and Quebec. A recent report by the Canadian Financing and Leasing Association indicated that in 2021, over 27,000 vehicles were stolen in Ontario alone, equating to a car being stolen approximately every 17 minutes.

Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has highlighted the importance of innovation and technology in agriculture for Africa to realize its potential as a global food provider.
He conveyed this message during his address at the Convention and 30th anniversary celebration of the Council of Ewe Associations of North America (CEANA) in Atlanta, Georgia. The event was held under the theme “Empowering our youth towards innovative entrepreneurship in transformational agriculture.”
Speaker Bagbin highlighted the necessity of incorporating technologies like GPS, sensors, drones, and data analytics into agriculture practices. These technological tools, he explained, could optimize resource utilization, monitor crop health, and enhance crop yields.
Furthermore, embracing technology in agriculture would empower the younger generation involved in farming by providing them with access to reliable data, enabling informed decision-making, minimizing wastage, and boosting overall efficiency.
Speaker Bagbin stressed that today’s youth are highly proficient in technology, making traditional farming methods less appealing to them. Therefore, integrating innovative technology into agriculture is vital to engage and motivate the younger generation to participate in this critical sector.
“If governments direct resources into modernising agriculture and infuse technology into farm practices, more youth will opt for the sector. This will address the challenges of feeding a global population sustainably, create economic opportunities for rural communities and transform how we produce, distribute, and consume food,” he said.
The Speaker underscored the need for agricultural innovation aimed at addressing long-standing issues in the sector, including waste reduction and the challenges associated with seasonal fluctuations in farm produce. He emphasized the importance of reimagining how surplus crops are managed, particularly during periods of oversupply when prices plummet and produce is left to rot, followed by periods of scarcity.
To address these challenges, the Speaker advocated for innovative approaches to managing post-harvest losses and supporting agro-businesses to mitigate these losses effectively. He suggested that the marketing of agricultural products should also undergo innovation, thereby bolstering local economies in Africa, reducing food transportation distances, and optimizing the efficiency of the food supply chain. This would enable youth farmers to generate higher returns on their investments and reinvest in their agricultural endeavors.
To attract young people to agriculture, the Speaker called for the implementation of policies promoting secure land tenure and access for the youth. These policies could encompass initiatives such as land redistribution, leasing programs, and support for communal land ownership. Additionally, he stressed the importance of actively involving women, indigenous communities, and rural youth in the agricultural sector.
Furthermore, the Speaker urged financial institutions in Africa to facilitate access to financing for young farmers. This could involve offering low-interest loans, grants, and subsidies to assist young individuals in investing in equipment and seeds, among other necessities. He explained that empowering youth in agriculture necessitates a comprehensive approach addressing modernization of agriculture, education, resource access, policy support, and cultural attitudes.
In closing, the Speaker, also known as Torgbui Nuterperwola Awudome I, extended congratulations to CEANA, an organization uniting Ewe communities from Ghana, Togo, and Niger in North America, on its 30th anniversary. He commended the association for its resilience, perseverance, and hard work that have sustained it over the past three decades, emphasizing that these achievements should not be taken lightly.
He spoke about the coincidence of CEANA, Ghana’s parliament and himself celebrating 30 years and said “I know what it takes to be doing the same thing for 30 years, and striving to be better each year than you were in the previous one”.
He was impressed by CEANA’s commitment to improve upon farm practices and develop the Ewe communities in the three countries and said “It portrays an association of people who are altruistic, driven by the desire to make an impact on the current and future generations”.
The Speaker was joined by his spouse, Ms. Alice Adjua Yornas, as well as several distinguished members of parliament, including Hon. Emmanuel Bedzrah, representing Ho West; Hon. Rockson Dafeamakpor, representing South Dayi; Hon. Dela Sowah, representing Kpando; Hon. Joycelyn Tetteh, representing North Dayi; and Hon. Kofi Attor, former MP for Ho Central. Additionally, Mr. Speaker was accompanied by his Special Aide, Mr. Gayheart Mensah, who serves as the Speaker’s Communication Expert.
Islamist militants have launched a devastating attack on a riverboat in northeastern Mali, resulting in the tragic loss of at least 49 innocent lives, as reported by the interim government.
In addition to this horrific assault, these militants targeted an army camp, resulting in the tragic deaths of 15 soldiers, while around 50 militants were reportedly killed in the clashes.
In response to this appalling tragedy, the government has declared three days of national mourning, marking a solemn period of reflection and remembrance.
Despite assertions by the military that Russian Wagner Group mercenaries were helping turn the tide of their campaign, the threat posed by Islamist extremists has continued to escalate.
The city of Timbuktu in northern Mali has been under siege since the previous month, and numerous other recent attacks on transportation and military installations have further underscored the persistent security challenges facing the region.
It’s important to note that the BBC has not independently verified the government’s latest report, which was relayed via national television.
According to reports, the militants targeted the riverboat while it was navigating the River Niger, traveling from the town of Gao to Mopti. This river serves as a crucial transport lifeline in a region where quality roads and railways are scarce.
Simultaneously, militants mounted an attack on an army camp situated in the Bourem Circle within the Gao region.
The Malian army disclosed on social media that the riverboat came under assault at approximately 1100 GMT by “armed terrorist groups.”
It’s worth mentioning that the al-Qaeda-linked group, Jamaat Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM), has claimed responsibility for the attack on the army camp but has made no mention of the riverboat incident. JNIM is one of several Islamist groups operating in northern Mali and neighboring regions.
According to Comanav, the boat operator, the vessel was targeted by at least three rockets aimed at its engines. As a result, the boat was immobilized on the river, prompting the army to launch an evacuation operation to rescue passengers in distress.
Mali has remained under the governance of a military junta since the year 2020.
The junta garnered significant popular support during its seizure of power, following extensive protests against then-President Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta. These protests were driven by frustrations over economic instability, a contentious election, and enduring security challenges.
However, subsequent data indicates that Mali’s military government has made limited headway in its efforts to counter Islamist groups that hold sway over parts of the nation.
Mali’s military authorities have issued directives for the withdrawal of French troops and UN peacekeepers from the country, while simultaneously extending an invitation to Russian contractors to assume their roles.
An insurgency with ties to al-Qaeda and the Islamic State first took root in northern Mali back in 2012. Since then, Islamist militants have expanded their influence, spreading throughout the Sahel region, particularly in Burkina Faso and Niger.
“So he told me that, today is Monday, he said today he is going to meet Ben Kofi, the person the contract was awarded to, they will discuss it and see if they can get some money,” Bugri Naabu could be heard saying.
Although the precise context of the video remains somewhat unclear, recent developments have shed light on a potentially significant aspect. During a session before a parliamentary committee investigating a leaked tape involving three senior police officers, Superintendent George Asare made a notable claim regarding the current Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. Dampare, and his connection to Bugri Naabu.
Superintendent George Asare, while appearing before the parliamentary committee tasked with probing the leaked tape, asserted that a business relationship existed between the current IGP and Bugri Naabu. Asare contended that the IGP had received contracts from the police service with Bugri Naabu’s involvement.
According to Asare, this business association might have prompted the IGP to request Bugri Naabu to secretly record a private conversation involving Asare and other senior police officers. Subsequently, this recorded conversation was leaked, further complicating the ongoing controversy.
“He has lied on several occasions. I have Alhaji Bugri Naabu on tape, everything he came to say here, on video in his office. His relationship with IGP and contracts, 40,000 boots contract…” he spilled before being stopped in his tracks by the chairman of the committee, Samuel Atta-Akyea.
Bugri Naabu during his testimony before the parliamentary committee admitted to having lobbied for Dr Dampare to become IGP.
In an alternative rendition of the recent video recordings, Bugri Naabu can be heard confessing to being a recipient of financial compensation from the Ghana Police Service. This revelation came as a response to an unidentified individual who had accused him of receiving payments from Dr. Akuffo Dampare’s payroll.
“Chairman, let me tell you today, the reason why I set a lady for you is, the day we came to ask you about the CV you told us that you are not getting anything with Dampare and we made our investigation, Dampare is paying you… he is paying you GHC10,000,” he stated.
In his response, Bugri Naabu denied the allegation and clarified that it was, in fact, the police service that compensated him with GHC10,000 on a monthly basis for his role as an informant.
“Don’t tell me that he pays me GHC10,000; he doesn’t pay me, it’s the police… I don’t know, I receive GHC10,000 from the police and they tell me the security work I do as a paramount chief… when there is a problem I report to them,” he responded.
However, his accuser firmly insisted that the payment originated from the IGP and not the police service.
The disagreement over this matter escalated, with Bugri Naabu boldly challenging his accuser to take action and attempt to discredit him if they so desired.

Deputy Minister for Education, Reverend John Ntim Fordjour, has stated that national service represents the utmost expression of patriotism among Ghanaians, illustrating their commitment to the country.
The Member of Parliament for the Asian South constituency articulated that Ghana relies on the collective efforts of its citizens to advance and prosper.
These sentiments were conveyed during a significant event on Thursday, September 7, known as the “NSS Remembrance Day.” The event featured a flag-raising ceremony held at the forecourt of the Ghana National Service Scheme headquarters.
Its purpose was to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the National Service Scheme and to pay tribute to the fallen heroes who had dutifully served the nation through their participation in national service.
Yesterday at NSS Remembrance Day, we honored all our fallen heroes and those who served our nation well through National Service Scheme in the past 50 years of its formation. As Abraham Lincoln puts it, “A nation that does not honor its heroes will not endure for long”. Let us… pic.twitter.com/JcA50qqfjC
Mr Ntim Fordjour thus urged the youth to emulate the patriotism of these persons.
“Let us arise in the spirit of patriotism and serve Ghana our motherland beyond partisan, religious or tribal rhetorics that divide us. Ghana National Service Scheme has impacted our national development and will therefore be strengthened to deliver an enhanced mandate of building entrepreneurship, innovation and employable skills among our youth.”
In the midst of these developments, it has come to light that the National Service Scheme (NSS) currently owes its personnel two months’ allowances, a situation that has placed them in a state of financial distress.
In an effort to alleviate the economic challenges faced by beneficiaries, the institution had recently raised their allowances from GHS559 to GHS713.
In response to this, the Ghana National Service Personnel Association (NASPA) has issued a call to the National Service Scheme, urging them to promptly settle the outstanding arrears owed to their members.
Apple’s shares have experienced a second consecutive day of decline following reports of a ban on Chinese government employees using iPhones.
The technology giant’s stock market valuation has dipped by over 6%, equating to nearly $200 billion (£160 billion), in the past 48 hours.
China holds a significant position as Apple’s third-largest market, contributing to 18% of its total revenue in the previous year. Furthermore, a substantial portion of Apple’s product manufacturing takes place in China, primarily through its principal supplier, Foxconn.
On Wednesday, The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) disclosed that Beijing had issued directives instructing central government agency officials to refrain from bringing iPhones into the workplace or utilizing them for work-related purposes. Subsequently, Bloomberg News reported the possibility of extending this ban to employees of state-owned enterprises and government-affiliated organizations.
According to insider sources cited by WSJ, these instructions, which also encompassed restrictions on other foreign-branded devices, were communicated by superiors to officials in recent weeks. While iPhones were already prohibited in some government agencies, these reports suggest a broader implementation of the ban. The extent to which these directives have been disseminated throughout the Chinese bureaucracy remains unclear.
These developments coincide with the imminent launch of the iPhone 15, scheduled for September 12. While China remains one of Apple’s most significant markets and a hub for iPhone production, recent efforts have seen Apple increasing its manufacturing presence in India.
As of now, there has been no official statement from the Chinese government regarding these reports.
The government has officially confirmed the successful completion of the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP) pertaining to its U.S. dollar-denominated bonds.
In a statement released by the Ministry of Finance, this achievement is heralded as a substantial milestone in the government’s pursuit of macroeconomic stabilization policies within the framework of the IMF-supported Post-COVID-19 Programme for Economic Growth (PC-PEG).
The statement clarified that the settlement process adhered to the stipulated terms and conditions outlined in the Exchange Memorandum, which was dated July 14, 2023.
Below is the full statement

In a heartwarming moment that encapsulated the power of sports to inspire and connect people, a Ghanaian woman shed tears of joy as she came face-to-face with her idol, Mohammed Kudus.
The emotional encounter occurred following Ghana’s triumphant victory over the Central African Republic on Thursday, September 7, at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium during the 2023 AFCON Qualifiers.
Ghana clinched a hard-fought 2-1 victory against the Central African Republic in a crucial 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier held at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium today.
Despite being the home team, the Black Stars faced early pressure from the visiting Central African Republic side.
The visitors took the lead in the 25th minute when striker Louis Mafouta found the back of the net.
However, the Black Stars managed to equalize just before half-time, courtesy of a stunning free-kick from Mohammed Kudus, who recently joined West Ham United.
In the second half, substitute Ernest Nuamah sealed the victory for Ghana in the 82nd minute, securing a 2-1 win.
After the game, a male fan ran onto the pitch to meet his star, Kudus. He knelt before him and showed reverence. He was, however, whisked away due to security reasons.
When one thought that would be all for the day, a young female adult dashed off to meet Kudus, who was heading to the team’s bus.
Even the security personnel present could not prevent her from meeting her idol. She wanted a photograph with Kudus. And when she finally got to Kudus, she broke down in tears. She had fulfillment written all over her face.
The love for Kudus also brought a West Ham fan all the way from London to Kumasi. He noted that he travelled just to see Kudus play, and his journey was not a waste as Kudus delivered.

Communications Director for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign, Nana Akomea, has voiced his support for former Trade Minister Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen’s decision to withdraw from the New Patriotic Party’s presidential primaries scheduled for November 4, 2023.
Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, a recurring presidential aspirant, announced his withdrawal from the presidential race’s second round on Tuesday, September 5.
He cited concerns over electoral irregularities, perceived unfair treatment, and bias during the super delegates’ conference, where he unexpectedly secured third place.
While Kyerematen has not disclosed his future plans following his withdrawal, he mentioned his intention to consult with his family and team members. He plans to make an announcement regarding his future role in Ghana’s political landscape.
In response to this announcement during an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosiisen on Wednesday, September 6, Nana Akomea, representing Dr. Bawumia’s campaign, expressed his view that Alan’s withdrawal is a positive development for the party.
He encouraged other contenders to follow suit and throw their support behind the party’s apparent frontrunner.
“My elder brother, Alan Kyerematen’s withdrawal from the second round of the NPP flagbearer race is good news. It is something I was expecting, and now I am expecting more people to withdraw from the race.”
Mr Ken Agyapong, one of the candidates has made known his unwavering commitment to participate in the NPP Primaries come November 4.
Asked by the host of the show, Osei Bonsu [Alias OB], whether he expects Mr. Kyerematen and his supporters to throw their weight behind Dr. Bawumia, Nana Akomea responded in the affirmative.
“I think so. Once you take the lead, you are the one everyone wants to associate with. Everybody likes a winning team. So, we will speak with Alan and his supporters to come and join us. The reason why I said I expect all the others to withdraw from the race is that, the party has clearly shown where its heart is. If in an election of 10 contestants, the vote of nine people cannot even match the half of what one person got, then it is really clear where the party’s heart is so what is the need for the contest?” he quizzed.
“And that’s how the NPP behaves. When it decides on where it wants to go, it is very clear. So once the party decides there’s nothing anyone can do. With how the results went on August 26, if I was among the race I would have withdrawn, and that’s why I am not surprised Alan pulled out” he noted.
“Apart from 2008 where there were about 17 people, one person still had 47 percent and that’s Akufo-Addo. When he [Akufo-Addo] came back in 2010, look at the votes he got, it was decisive. In 2014, the election was done twice like we did now because the people were more than five. In that super delegates’ conference Nana Addo had 80%. When they still insisted on going to the second round, Nana Addo moved from his 80% to 94%” he argued.
In response to the claims made by Mr. Kyerematen as his basis for withdrawing from the race, Nana Akomea said he sympathizes with the former Trade Minister who is speaking out of hurt because his effort has gone down the drain.
“It’s not even two weeks after the election. Election is hard work and it entails a lot. Look at the time Alan resigned from cabinet and the campaigning he’s been doing, one can easily be pained after such a process only to perform this way. We are humans with emotions, we are not machines, so losing an election hurts. So we expect some emotional reaction which is normal. But when the heart is calm, I believe everyone will see good reason and come to terms with the reality.”
The one-time Communications Director of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), said Alan’s reaction today is similar to what he exhibited prior to the 2008 elections where he resigned and later rejoined the party to campaign for Nana Akufo-Addo.
“This is not the first time. If you remember what happened in 2008, the same Alan Kyerematen resigned from the party. He also said the party intimidated his supporters and so he was leaving the party which he did. But eventually when he was calm, he joined Nana Akufo-Addo’s campaign for the election. So, for those of us who won, we are prepared to be magnanimous in victory and won’t disrespect anyone.
Nana Akomea also downplayed all the issues Alan raised as the basis for his withdrawal.
“If you look at the issues Alan raised, they’re not fair. If you say the rules were tilted for one person to have an advantage, what do you mean by that? The election committee engaged all aspirants and gave people the register and listened to everyone’s concerns. The balloting was done fairly, and the Electoral Commission supervised the elections fairly. So, how was the process skewed for one person? The only issue they raised was that the election should be centralized, but the party said that couldn’t be done in the midst of the arrangements that had been made. So, if you wait to lose the election only to claim that the rules have been skewed, then that’s unfair” he argued.
According to Nana Akomea, Alan Kyerematen equally got the support of some key party people including MPs and Chief Executives as well as Ministers of state, and so it would be unfair for him to have issues with similar support for Dr. Bawumia.
“He [Alan] also had leading members and influential people making pronouncements for him. So if he says utterances or pronouncements by leading members showed that the process was skewed, that is neither here nor there.”
Mr. Akomea also expressed his disagreement with Mr. Kyerematen’s allegations of supposed intimidation of his supporters during the election.
Regarding the incident involving Mr. Kyerematen’s agent in the North East Region, who sustained injuries, Nana Akomea asserted that the agent’s actions led to his unfortunate situation. He claimed that the agent initiated an altercation when he had the alternative to report his concerns to the election officials overseeing the process.
Nana Akomea emphasized that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and his team had invested considerable effort in securing the results and support they had garnered. They achieved this by extensively touring the country to engage with the party delegates.
To commemorate the first anniversary of his mother’s passing, King Charles III has shared a heartfelt message along with a cherished photograph of Queen Elizabeth II.
In the message, the King said he recalled the late queen’s “devoted service and all she meant to so many of us”.
The selected photograph by King Charles III features a youthful Queen Elizabeth II, aged 42, during an official portrait session in 1968.
Queen Elizabeth II passed away at the age of 96 in Balmoral Castle on September 8th last year. This sad event occurred only a few months after celebrating her Platinum Jubilee, commemorating her remarkable 70-year reign.
In his brief tribute, scheduled for release this Friday, King Charles expresses his gratitude to the nation for the unwavering “love and support” extended to him and Queen Camilla during their initial year as reigning monarchs.
“In marking the first anniversary of Her late Majesty’s death and my accession, we recall with great affection her long life, devoted service and all she meant to so many of us,” the King said.
“I am deeply grateful, too, for the love and support that has been shown to my wife and myself during this year as we do our utmost to be of service to you all.”

This formal and previously unreleased color photograph was captured by Cecil Beaton on the 16th of October in 1968. It portrays the late Queen in a sidelong stance, radiantly smiling in her Garter robes, adorned with the Grand Duchess Vladimir’s Tiara—an exquisite piece composed of 15 intertwined diamond circles.
Throughout the summer, King Charles III has resided at both his Birkhall residence and the Balmoral Castle in Aberdeenshire.
In the morning of Friday, the King and Queen Camilla will attend Crathie Kirk church, located nearby, for a private memorial prayer service.
Meanwhile, the Prince and Princess of Wales, currently visiting west Wales, will pay tribute to the late Queen’s life with a small, intimate service at St. Davids Cathedral.
In his own message, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said the scale of the late queen’s service “only seems greater” a year after her death.
“Her devotion to the nations of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth only seems deeper,” he said.
“And our gratitude for such an extraordinary life of duty and dedication only continues to grow.”
Mr Sunak said he treasured his memories of meeting the late queen in which he was struck by her “wisdom, her incredible warmth and grace”, as well as her “sharp wit”.
“People across the UK – whether they had the good fortune to meet Her late Majesty or not – will be reflecting today on what she meant to them and the example she set for us all,” he added.
Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer said the queues to see the late queen lying in state showed she had “always enjoyed a special bond with her people”.
“It was a relationship built from her understanding that service of this great nation is the thread that unites sovereign and subject,” he said.
“So, as we reflect on her legacy again today, let us embrace that spirit of public service as our guide towards a better future.”
In honor of the anniversary of King Charles’s ascension to the throne, cannon salutes will resound at noon on Friday, echoing through Hyde Park and the Tower of London.
Furthermore, at 13:00 BST, the bells of Westminster Abbey will chime in commemoration of this significant occasion.
Separately, the Duke of Sussex has been paying his own heartfelt tribute to the late queen, stating, “she watches over all of us.” During his speech at the WellChild Awards ceremony in London on Thursday, he shared how he had been compelled to miss last year’s event due to his journey to Balmoral after his grandmother’s sudden illness.
Residents residing in Dome Pillar 2, Accra, have raised alarm about what they consider excessively high bills issued by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) through its electronic billing system.
They contend that although they have been using the ECG’s electronic billing app since September 2022, it does not accurately reflect their actual electricity consumption, leading to overcharging.
A resident who engaged the media asserted that the problem of overcharging affects a large number of postpaid customers.
“It’s been about 12 months since we received paper bills for postpaid meters… So since September 2022 no paper bills here. We contacted ECG and we were told that we can just do estimates around what we’ve been paying in the past and then go ahead and pay until this is resolved,” sheexplained.
They claim that they have been using the ECG’s electronic billing app since September 2022, but it inaccurately reflects their actual electricity consumption, resulting in overbilling.
One resident mentioned that they had requested transparency from the ECG regarding their actual payment amounts but had received no response from the company. Another resident highlighted drawbacks of the ECG Power App, especially for consumers who do not use smartphones.
In response to these concerns raised by Dome Pillar 2 residents, Laila Abubakar, the External Relations Officer of ECG, acknowledged the issues and assured the public that the company is aware and actively working to resolve them. She explained that the overbilling of postpaid meters is a consequence of ECG’s extensive digital transformation efforts.
Speaking on JoyFM, Madam Abubakar explained that the issue of overbilling postpaid meters is a result of ECG undergoing a “massive transformation” in the company’s “digitalisation process.”
She admitted that, “We expected that there would be a few hiccups. We did not expect that our mass-estimated bills would cost so much.”
The ECG External Relations Officer reassured customers that the company is diligently addressing the issue.
She emphasized that the majority of the concerns raised have already been resolved within their offices, with only a small number of customers still encountering overbilling.
Consequently, Madam Abubakar said she was hopeful that ECG would solve every issue in the “next couple of weeks.”
“If these customers are still encountering these challenges, we encourage them to come into our offices,” she said.
A 40-year-old tricycle (Aboboya) rider and scrap dealer in Mankessim, Central Region, has reportedly taken his own life.
Per reports, the deceased, identified as Suleman, is said to have thrown himself into a river on Tuesday, September 5, 2023, citing financial hardship as the cause.
Suleman, sources say, had frequently voiced his struggles and attempted suicide multiple times.
Eyewitnesses reported seeing him undressing at the riverbank, then suddenly leaping into the water.
Initially, they believed he intended to swim and return, but he never resurfaced. The preliminary search for the deceased proved futile.
His remains were, however, retrieved on Wednesday, September 6, after a consistent search.
Since 2022, Ghana has seen its economic challenges intensify, bringing frustration to many homes.
Prices of goods and services, as well as transportation fares, have increased significantly. Currently, utility tariffs are being adjusted quarterly to ensure utility service providers are able to cover the cost of operations.
Ghana secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory against the Central African Republic in a crucial 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier match held at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.
The Black Stars, although playing at home, faced early pressure from the visiting Central African Republic team.
The away team took the lead in the 25th minute when striker Louis Mafouta found the net.
Despite this setback, the Black Stars managed to equalize just before half-time, thanks to a spectacular free-kick from Mohammed Kudus, who recently joined West Ham United.
In the second half, substitute Ernest Nuamah secured the winning goal for Ghana in the 82nd minute, clinching a 2-1 victory.
This comeback win ensures Ghana’s qualification for the 2023 AFCON tournament in Ivory Coast.
Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast (UCC) and the Executive Chairman of Jonah Capital, Sir Samuel Esson Jonah, have outlined five strategies to help the pharmaceutical industry in Ghana overcome its current challenges and become a driver of economic growth in the country.
Sir Jonah expressed concern about the industry’s logistical and financial issues, which hinder its ability to reach its full economic potential.
During his speech at the 2023 Annual Conference of the Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana (PSG) in Takoradi, he emphasized the need for growth, pointing out that Africa’s share of the global pharmaceutical market revenue is less than $60 billion, out of a total of $1 trillion and $482 billion in 2022.
“With a population of over 1.4 billion currently representing about 17.89% of the global total, Africa accounts for only about 3% of the global pharmaceutical market. Therein lies the opportunity for growth. So what is holding you back?” he said.
To address the industry’s challenges, Jonah recommended a collaborative approach involving the general public, local investors, and the government. This collaboration should focus on promoting investments in the pharmaceutical sector through joint ventures.
“The entrepreneurial and risk-aggressive among you must move decisively to form partnerships with established foreign companies with the purpose of acquiring much-needed technology and liquidity through foreign direct investment,” he said.
Sir Jonah emphasized the need for pharmaceutical manufacturing companies to modernize their production facilities and attain WHO certification.
“Aggressively pursue capacity-building to enable more members of the PSG to obtain WHO certification. This is the surest way to firstly retool and re-establish to meet local demand, and then work to export to the sub-region and beyond,” he said.
Sam Jonah further called for a curriculum overhaul.
“Improve and expand the curriculum at the seven existing schools of pharmacy in Ghana, and use technical experts from industry as resource persons to provide the needed skills and competencies locally.”
On a regional level, he stressed the importance of pharmaceutical associations collaborating with their counterparts in Africa and engaging with ministries to promote trade liberalization and ratify agreements that facilitate and strengthen free trade throughout the continent.
“Your leadership and your African counterparts and respective sector Ministries must work purposefully with the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) for liberalization of trade rules and signing and ratification of regional agreements that enhance free trade in Africa. This will inure to the growth of your sector,” he said.
Finally, he emphasized the need for collective advocacy, rigorous enforcement, and increased involvement in public affairs to raise awareness about the proliferation of substandard drugs in the market.
“Our sub-region currently carries the highest prevalence of dumping of fake and substandard medicine. For every hundred medicines, 18.7 of our people are fake or sub-standard. PricewaterhouseCoopers found that approximately one million people die annually, with nearly half a million being preventable malaria deaths caused by toxic counterfeit pharmaceuticals. Who imports and sells these medicines? Are they pharmacists too?
“The World Customs Organisation reported that nearly $200 billion worth of fake and potentially harmful pharmaceuticals are sold yearly around the world. Hundreds of thousands of children die from the administration of counterfeits or medicines below accepted standards. Are we sacrificing human life for money?
“Are we covering up for murderers? Where is the outrage? Do we truly care about the health of our people? Where are the concerned and courageous Pharmacists among you who will speak up? In dire situations like this and many others in our homeland Ghana, I entreat you as individuals, and as a society to remember: Silence is not an option,” he said.
Director-General of Services at the Police Head Office, COP Enoch Adutwum Bediako, has emphasized that the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr George Akuffo Dampare, is not under any obligation to grant promotions to specific police officers.
During a session with students of the Police Basic School as part of the Snatch Them Young Police Initiative, COP Bediako advised future recruits not to assume that longevity in the service automatically entitles them to promotions from the IGP.
“You cannot go and tell the IGP that, I have worked so I need promotion, as if he is obliged to promote you, whether you work or you don’t work. No. The answer is, it depends on how you have worked within the period then the IGP will promote you. So in future, if you become police officers put that in your mind.”
COP Bediako’s remarks come in response to recent claims made by COP Alex Mensah during his appearance before the parliamentary committee investigating the leaked tape regarding an alleged plot to remove IGP Dr. George Akuffo Dampare from office.
COP Mensah alleged that low morale in the Police Service was due to the IGP’s failure to promote eligible officers and mismanagement of the Ghana Police Service.
“Dampare is not managing the Police Service well and the majority of Police officers are not happy. You can call the Police officers underground and they will tell you,” he said.
In May this year, some 82 police officers filed a suit against the Attorney General (1st defendant), the Ghana Police Service (2nd defendant), and the Inspector General of Police (3rd defendant).
The plaintiffs contend that the Ghana Police Service failed to promote them after they finished their studies under the organization’s study leave with pay policy.
In the lawsuit filed at an Accra High Court on May 15, the officers led by Deputy Inspector Kofi Osal claim they were denied their deserved promotions as well as entry into the Police College after the successful completion of their studies during the 2017/2018 academic year.
They maintained that the agency refused to promote them despite duly notifying them of the situation and further appealing to be promoted.
The complainants are therefore requesting that the court issue an order directed against the 2nd and 3rd defendants to grant the plaintiffs who qualify for accelerated promotions.
They are also demanding that a permit is given to the plaintiffs who qualify to enter the Police College without further delay.
Improved air quality monitoring in Accra has identified Nima, Makola, Agbogbloshie, Chorkor, and Madina Zongo Junction as the top five most polluted areas in the city.
These locations consistently have poor air quality due to soot from open waste burning and vehicle emissions.
Professor Kofi Amegah, the Breathe Accra Project Lead, emphasized that these pollutants and particulates are harmful to human health.
Data collected over four months of monitoring indicated that pollution in these areas exceeded the recommended World Health Organization standards throughout the day.
The Air Quality Index (AQI) categorizes air quality as ideal or good when it falls within the range of 0 to 50. AQI from 51 to 100 is considered moderate, with some health concerns for sensitive individuals, such as children under five.
“For instance, AQI for Agbogbloshie on Wednesday 6th September 2023 was between 150 and 200, which is unhealthy for all groups of people,” Prof Amegah said.
He explained that the deployment of more than 30 sensors was enhancing the capabilities of the Environmental Protection Agency’s monitoring stations. This expansion enabled a broader area of the city to undergo continuous monitoring for air quality.
While the monitoring system has not yet reached the international best practice of having sensors within every five-mile radius, the upgraded monitoring infrastructure provides real-time data on air quality. This real-time data aids in investigations to identify the sources and causes of pollution, facilitating remedial actions.
Regarding green spaces, Professor Amegah shared findings from a recent study he conducted. The study revealed a significant decline in green spaces, which include tree cover, grassy areas, and parks. These green spaces act as the “lungs of the city” and have considerably diminished over the past two decades.
“These greens purified the air, but we have removed almost all. We need to act fast by planting trees before it is too late,” he cautioned.
Mr Alex Johnson, the Head of Transport, Accra Metropolitan Assembly, said: “There is a high concentration of pollutants wherever there is high population and high volume of vehicular traffic at the same time.”
“As vehicles move slowly, fuel burning becomes inefficient resulting in high emissions of air pollutants. Also, open burning of waste in these areas is quite common, so I’m not surprised at the results of the monitored data.”
He emphasized that various groups, including market women, traders, “truck pushers,” head porters (kayayei), patrons, drivers, pedestrians, and residents residing in these exposed environments, face an increased risk of developing heart-related diseases and lung cancer over the medium to long term.
Data from the Ghana Health Service (GHS) for the first half of 2023 revealed that asthma, a condition primarily attributed to poor air quality, ranked as the second most recorded non-communicable disease (NCD). Dr. Efua Commeh, the Acting Programme Manager for Non-Communicable Diseases at GHS, clarified that this data indicated a rising number of people suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases like asthma. Pollutants also increased the likelihood of children contracting upper respiratory infections like the flu, which could trigger asthma symptoms.
Inhaling dust and soot particles could result in various health issues, including lung dysfunction, heart diseases, cancer, damage to nerves, brain, kidneys, liver, and other organs, potentially leading to premature deaths.
Regarding the health burden, information obtained by the Ghana News Agency (GNA) revealed that the National Health Insurance spent approximately US$14,976,000 annually on treating conditions related to NCDs among 500 hospitalized patients.
Desmond Appiah, the Country Lead of Clean Air Fund, reiterated the importance of collaboration among leadership, law enforcement agencies, and the public to maintain clean air. He emphasized that working together and making evidence-based decisions, coupled with targeted actions, would reduce and eventually eliminate waste burning while improving transportation methods.
A shared objective of ensuring clean air for everyone could serve as a catalyst to secure funding and investments in sectors that promote air quality improvements while delivering multiple co-benefits.
The Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has issued a call to action for Ghanaians to take all necessary measures to safeguard the nation’s democracy and stability.
He has encouraged citizens to demonstrate courage and to vocalize their concerns regarding actions that could jeopardize the country’s peace and order.
“We have never had this length of democratic stability, so, it is something that we should value and not toy with,” he said.
“We have never come this low, where. as a country, we are unable to service our debt let alone to pay, we have never come this low where corruption in the country has become like an American buffet, eat all you can for $10.
“We are at a point where our nation’s Central Bank, on paper, does not exist, we are at a stage where our security services have been politically compromised.
“The least said about our justice system the better and in all this, what helps to stabilise nations in crisis like this is the freedom to demonstrate because when people are frustrated and they get the opportunity to vent out their feelings, it’s a way of preventing an explosion, but that right too is being trampled upon,” he said.
Mr. Nketiah cautioned the Electoral Commission (EC) against implementing policies and initiatives that could potentially disenfranchise Ghanaians, especially the youth, and undermine the nation’s political stability.
“I am calling on civil society organisations, opinion leaders, faith-based organisations to bring pressure to bear on the government to make sure that the last right of the youth to cast their ballot and to determine their leaders are not taken away from them, because when you block peaceful avenues of change you are inviting violent avenues of change,” he stated.
He called upon the recently inaugurated national executives to exert their utmost effort in securing victory for the party in the December 2024 elections.
General Secretary of the NDC, Mr. Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, similarly urged the new executives to prioritize the party’s interests over their individual aspirations to ensure a successful outcome.
Member of Parliament for Mpraeso, Davis Ansah Opoku, has indicated that former Trade Minister, Alan Kyerematen, will not receive the following he requires should he decide to break away from the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Speaking on Citi TV’s The Point of View show, Mr Ansah explained that the supporters Mr Kyerematen has garnered, is due to his affiliation to the ruling party, hence any disassociation will cost him.
He further noted that the legislators who have thrown their weight behind Mr Kyerematen will also withdraw their support.
“I will be worried. I really would not think that Mr Kyerematen would want to form his party or would want to go Independent. I mean, we all supported him because he is NPP first and I am not too sure he is going to disappoint the teeming supporters of the NPP.
Well, if he leaves the NPP, he is not going to get any support. All the MPs that supported Alan Kyerematen supported him because he is NPP. And so if he leaves NPP nobody will follow him. That point must be made,” he told CitiTV’s Bernard Avle.
The conversation about Alan Kyerematen going independent has arisen following his withdrawal from the NPP primaries.
Former Trade Minister, Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, in a press statement issued on Tuesday, September 5, 2023, noted that his withdrawal stems from abysmal performance at the party’s just-ended Super Delegates Conference due to the interference of some leaders of the party.
In his statement, he said: “After having carefully analysed the results of the said elections, it is absolutely clear to me from events leading to, during and after the elections, that the Special Delegates Conference was strategically and tactically skewed in favour of one particular Aspirant. The pronouncements made by some leading Members of our Party both before and after the elections, also lend weight to my observations.”
While a school thought believes the best move for Mr Kyerematen would be to become the running mate of Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, who is considered a front runner in the NPP Primaries, others suggest that the former Trade Minister goes solo.
The National Service Scheme (NSS) has announced that it has collected 600 bags of maize, which will be distributed to Senior High Schools (SHSs) nationwide.
The scheme, as part of the Economic Enclave Project under the GhanaCARES “Obaatan Pa” initiative, successfully harvested more than 600 bags of maize. These bags have now been handed over to the Ministry of Education for distribution to schools across the country to support the school feeding program.
Ambrose Entsiwah, the Acting Head of Corporate Affairs at NSS, provided this information in an interview with Citi News in Accra.
“We have actually so far prepared and bagged 600 bags to be sent to some of the Free SHSs to augment their feeding stock for the students… We still have some of the maize on the farm yet to be harvested.”
“So when we are able to do that then we will be able to tell the number of bags that will come out of the next harvesting which will be done very soon. But that will be dependent on the fact that the Ministry will have to take a decision on which of the schools will benefit.”
Mr. Entsiwah emphasized that 50 NSS personnel from various agricultural institutions across the country are responsible for farm-related activities. These individuals can anticipate employment opportunities after completing their service.
Furthermore, he noted that the initial harvest from the farms managed by the National Service Scheme (NSS) is projected to yield approximately 1,000 bags of rice.
These rice supplies will help bolster food provisions for schools participating in the Free Senior High School program.

The National Teaching Council has published the timetable for the 2023 Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination (GTLE) II. The timetable has also been shared on the Ghana Education Service (GES) Facebook page.
Grade Level Specialism Pedagogy will be held on September 14, 2023, from 9:00 am to 11:00 am (2 hours).
Candidates are expected to take the Multiple Subjects Content/Single Subject Specialism exam on Friday, September 15, 2023, from 9:00 am to 11:00 am.
According to the National Teaching Council, the duration mentioned on the paper (Course Area) supersedes that of the general timetable.
Also, the dress code for the examination should be formal or professional, and babies cannot be brought into the examination hall.
Due to the GTLE reforms to be implemented this year, candidates associated with the traditional GTLE (Essential Professional Skills, Literacy, and Numeracy) are given three chances to redeem themselves.
The Wenchi Municipal Directorate of the Ghana Education Service (GES) in the Bono Region has launched an inquiry into a concerning incident involving a teacher at St. Paul’s Anglican Basic School.
The teacher is alleged to have compelled some students to take an oath in the name of a deity to demonstrate their innocence regarding his missing phone.
The GES has emphasized that if the teacher is found culpable for these actions, he will face appropriate consequences as outlined in the established code of conduct.
David Baffoe, the Public Relations Officer at the Wenchi Municipal Education Directorate, stated that the directorate is committed to uncovering all the facts surrounding the incident.
He stated, “We started the investigations…and we will continue today so that we can establish the facts on the whole matter so that we can communicate appropriately to the public. We are there to make sure that we get the truth from the matter, and if the teacher is found culpable, we will use the established code of conduct against him.”
The Ministry of Health (MoH) is taking proactive steps to mitigate the mass emigration of healthcare professionals to other countries and its impact on Ghana, according to the Minister of Health, Kwaku Agyeman-Manu.
He acknowledged that the migration of health workers was a global issue but highlighted that the MoH’s Human Resource Policy Direction aimed to bolster mechanisms for the training, deployment, retention, and reintegration of healthcare personnel to meet both local and global demands.
Kwaku Agyeman-Manu made these remarks during his participation in the Meet-the-Press series in Accra, where he provided an overview of the Ministry’s progress in delivering quality healthcare services.
It’s worth noting that the General Secretary of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), Dr. David Tenkorang-Twum, had revealed that a significant number of nurses were seeking approval from the GRNMA Secretariat to seek better opportunities abroad.
In response to this, Minister Agyeman-Manu explained that the Ministry was actively engaging with local and international frameworks for healthcare workforce deployment and reintegration. Additionally, they were collaborating closely with the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations to streamline migration policies, addressing present and future challenges.
These efforts, the minister emphasized, would enable Ghana to reap both financial and intellectual benefits from the international deployment of healthcare workers through mutually advantageous bilateral agreements.
“Government started managing migration in small quantities from Ghana to Barbados. So the new strategy is that, we will engage those who need some of our nurses to see how best we would allow them go and work,” he said.
Speaking on some achievements chalked by the ministry, he said the establishment of a Vaccine Institute in Ghana, represented a significant advancement in regional healthcare, “This initiative stands out as the second institute in West Africa and the sixth across the entire African continent”.
“In August 2023 the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) was designated as a Regional Centre of Regulatory Excellence in Vaccines Regulatory Oversight in Africa by African Union Development Agency — New Partnership for Africa’s Development,” he said.
The Food and Drug Authority (FDA) has achieved the designation of a World Health Organization (WHO) Prequalified Quality Control Laboratory. According to the Minister of Health, Kwaku Agyeman-Manu, this designation highlights the FDA’s commitment to enhancing vaccine regulatory capabilities in African regulatory bodies. He emphasized that this achievement aligns with the President’s vision to position Ghana as a vaccine manufacturing hub for the continent.
Minister Agyeman-Manu revealed that the FDA’s Drugs Laboratory, part of the Centre for Laboratory Services and Research, has become the first in the ECOWAS region to attain this status. With this recognition, test results issued by this laboratory will be globally acknowledged, opening doors for locally produced medicines to access international markets and supporting the facilitation of the African Continental Free Trade Area.
Discussing Ghana’s roadmap to achieving universal health coverage by 2030, Minister Agyeman-Manu stressed the government’s focus on improving access to high-quality healthcare services and reducing preventable maternal, adolescent, child mortality, and disabilities.
He also outlined the Ministry’s mandate to enhance the health status of all residents in Ghana through effective policy formulation, resource mobilization, and monitoring and evaluation. The vision of the health sector, he noted, is to have a healthy population that contributes to national development and the growth of a local health industry. This vision can be realized by promoting health and well-being and ensuring access to quality healthcare for all Ghanaian residents.
Regarding the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), Minister Agyeman-Manu mentioned that the total enrollment has reached 17.2 million annual active members, representing 54.5% coverage of the population, just below the 57% target.

In the meantime, the balloting event planned for the remaining NPP flagbearer aspirants has been postponed.
Vodafone Ghana has introduced a significant enhancement to its current 4G technology, known as 4G+.
This upgrade promises to provide customers with an elevated network speed, enhancing their overall service experience.
The Technology Director at Vodafone Ghana, Aatif Jamal Qidwai, elaborated on the significance of this advancement.
“4G+ is not just a technical upgrade; it is about reshaping the online experience for our users. We are setting the stage for a transformative leap in mobile connectivity for Ghanaians, providing them faster download and upload speeds on 4G” he stated.
Aatif clarified that 4G+ employs a technique known as carrier aggregation. This method enables compatible 4G mobile phones to merge multiple 4G frequency bands, significantly enhancing the speed at which users can download or stream content.
“We are currently rolling out 4G+ on most of our existing sites.”
In practical terms, Vodafone’s customers using 4G+-enabled devices can anticipate a significant boost in their internet speeds. This enhancement carries promising implications for the customer experience, translating to smoother video calls, faster app downloads, and reduced buffering times when using streaming services.
Demonstrating its dedication to ensuring widespread access to this improved speed, Vodafone is launching a device financing program. Through this scheme, customers can acquire 4G+-capable phones from Vodafone’s retail outlets and pay for them in manageable installments. Furthermore, these phones come with a complimentary 2.5GB of data every month for a duration of 12 months.
This expansion comes at a time when digital connectivity is increasingly crucial. Beginning with urban centers, where the demand for high-speed data is most pronounced, Vodafone intends to extend this network enhancement across the entire nation. This initiative aligns with the company’s commitment to championing digital inclusivity in Ghana, ensuring that reliable internet access becomes a reality for all.
Chief Executive Officer of Vodafone Ghana, Patricia Obo-Nai, reflecting on this, remarked, “We are so pleased with this fantastic upgrade; 4G+ is a major improvement to the experience that we give to our customers.
“This aligns with our vision of enabling a digital society where people, businesses and communities can connect seamlessly, and we will continue to do more and give more to our customers.”
The Western Regional Fire Command has conducted fire safety education programs in numerous schools throughout the region as part of the 2023 Fire Safety Week observance.
The primary aim of these programs was to raise awareness about the dangers of unwanted fires and how to prevent them.
A total of 1,300 pupils, accompanied by their supervisors, had the opportunity to benefit from this initiative. The participating schools included Asempa Junior College, Beahu, Oxford Preparatory, Eikwe, Wisdom Preparatory, Eikwe, Atuabo Catholic Primary and JHS, and Sanzule Krisan Primary and JHS.
In addition, a safety team from the Half Assini Fire Station provided fire safety education to students at ST. Patrick Catholic School, aiming to increase awareness of the risks associated with unwanted fires.
Both the safety team and the students received guidance on following daily fire safety tips to prevent unwanted fires that can release toxic smoke and fumes into the atmosphere.
This education also emphasized the importance of preventing hazardous chemicals and materials from contaminating our water bodies, which can lead to various diseases.
The Chief of Army Staff (COAS) of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), Major General (Maj Gen) Thomas Oppong-Peprah, has made a generous contribution to the Public Health Division of the 37 Military Hospital at the Army Headquarters in Burma Camp.
He donated two Lenovo ThinkPad laptops and an All-in-One HP Desktop as part of his personal initiative to support the department’s operations.
Maj Gen Oppong-Peprah expressed his motivation for the donation, emphasizing the importance of assisting the hospital, which faces equipment shortages.
He acknowledged the request for support from the Officer-In-Charge of the Public Health Division, Capt. (GN) Harriet Manu, and noted that not every leader actively seeks assistance. In response to Capt. (GN) Manu’s appeal for aid, he felt compelled to provide support within his capacity.
Capt. (GN) Harriet Manu, who received the equipment on behalf of the 37 Military Hospital, stressed the significance of data in public health. She highlighted that the donation would help address certain data-related challenges, particularly as the number of recruitments increases.
The Public Health Division is responsible for occupational health and safety within the Ghana Armed Forces, including recruitment processes.
Capt. (GN) Harriet Manu expressed her gratitude for the timely intervention by COAS, noting that the donated equipment would significantly enhance the division’s effectiveness and efficiency in its public health duties.
The equipment was formally presented to the hospital by the Chief Staff Officer (CSO), Brigadier General Brimah Brako Owusu, on behalf of COAS.
Former Chairman of the National Democratic Congress in the Central Region, Bernard Jacobs Allotey, has noted that but for his name, Mr Alan Kyerematen would not have garnered any votes in the New Patriotic Party’s Super Delegates Conference.
He made this statement during an interview with Kwame Sefa Kayi on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo Show.
Bernard Jacobs Allotey noted that the few people within the NPP who recall the former Trade Minister due to his previous efforts to become flagbearer were those who decided to cast their ballot for him.
“First and foremost, Alan won by 95 votes, which couldn’t give him the total victory to lead in the Super Delegates, because of the name Alan Kyerematen.
It is something that he should know. Within the cluster of voters, some liked him, so they voted for him,” he said.
According to Mr Jacobs Allotey, he would have preferred that Mr Kyerematen resign before the Super Delegates Conference.
“I said it here last week that it would have been better for him to resign, step aside,” he stated.
Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia won the super delegates conference held on August 26, with a total of 629 votes, representing 68.15% of the total valid votes.
Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong came in second with 132 votes, or 14.30% while former Trade Minister Alan Kyerematen placed third with 95 votes, or 10.29%.
Following the conference, Mr Alan Kyerematen announced his withdrawal from the presidential candidate race, citing his abysmal performance among other reasons for his decision.
“After having carefully analysed the results of the said elections, it is absolutely clear to me from events leading to, during and after the elections, that the Special Delegates Conference was strategically and tactically skewed in favour of one particular Aspirant. The pronouncements made by some leading Members of our Party both before and after the elections, also lend weight to my observations,” he wrote.
Mr Alan Kyerematen further accused the party of allowing the “level of intimidation of varying intensity, directly and indirectly unleashed on a significant number of Delegates at various Voting Centers across the sixteen regions.”
This, he said, is unprecedented in the history of the NPP.
“In addition, the fact that my Polling Agent in the North East region has suffered severe damage to his eye sight, arising from his bold and courageous effort to ensure compliance with the very rules and regulations for the conduct of the elections as approved by the Presidential Elections Committee, will forever remain a dark spot in the history of internal elections within the Party.
This incident and various acts of violence and collusion, reported in other Voting Centers, are appalling, unconscionable, and despicable,” he added.
Mr Kyerematen is of the assertion that the path allegedly taken by the party is one that would lead to “self-destruction.”
He is of the opinion that the challenges raised will be “escalated in the next round of elections, for which balloting is scheduled for Wednesday, 6th of September 2023.”
Although the Black Stars have already played five games, only one match holds immense significance in their quest to secure a spot in another Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.
Ghana is set to host the Central African Republic (CAR) on matchday six of the 2023 AFCON qualifiers, and they require just one point to secure their place in Ivory Coast.
This game carries substantial importance for both teams, as CAR is also in pursuit of a victory that could tilt the scales in their favor, granting them a spot at the tournament.
For Ghana, two key objectives are in play: securing their AFCON berth and preserving their unbeaten record at the Baba Yara Stadium.
Since their loss to South Africa during the 2000 AFCON, when they were eliminated in the knockout stage of the competition, the Black Stars have remained undefeated in Kumasi. It’s worth noting that Ghana and Nigeria co-hosted that tournament.
Black Stars head coach, Chris Hughton has hinted that his players will do everything to ensure the record still stands.
“We will do everything that we can to get the result that we want to get. Preparation has been good. We are missing some players through injuries but it is also an opportunity for others,” he said on Wednesday.
“We are playing at home. We have a good record here and it is a record that we want to continue.”
Securing qualification for Ghana hinges on this outcome, a goal that Raoul Savoy, head coach of the Wild Beasts, is determined to achieve.
Savoy maintains the belief that his team has the potential to create an upset against the Black Stars, much like they did several months ago when they defeated Nigeria in Lagos.

“Nigeria never expected us to beat them at home but we did,” he told the media during Wednesday’s press conference ahead of the game.
“You never know [what we can do]. I have respect for Ghana because they are far better than us as a football nation but football is the most lovely game in the world because every time, every day you have surprises.”
With a touch of banter and a deliberate effort to maintain some distance in their words, these coaches are undeniably gearing up for what promises to be a captivating encounter.
The Baba Yara Stadium is set to witness a substantial crowd, and whatever significance has drawn people to the venue in the past, this match is no exception.
Kickoff is scheduled for 16:00 GMT, but rest assured that the atmosphere will be electric long before the referee’s whistle signals the start of the game.
Many issues affect Ghanaians, but what appears to be most distressing is the deplorable state of the Accra-Tema Motorway.
For months now, the road connecting Accra, the economic and administrative hub of Ghana, to Tema has posed significant challenges for motorists due to its pothole-ridden and rough condition.
This critical transportation link has not only caused inconvenience but also resulted in the loss of lives and a substantial increase in vehicle maintenance costs.
According to reports, the road section from Tema to Accra remains in a state of disrepair, while the area near the Ashaiman tollbooth has been particularly affected by extensive potholes. Transit trucks are frequently seen parked on the roadside for extended periods, exacerbating the situation. Additionally, erosion has taken its toll on the road’s edges.
Even the recently repaired portion just before the Abattoir Bridge has succumbed to potholes, forcing drivers to reduce their speed for safety reasons.
In June 2022, Roads and Highways Minister, Kwasi Amoako-Atta, noted that the Tema motorway would be expanded into 10-lane but much is yet to be seen.
Netizens are peeved and they want the difficulties faced while on the motorway resolved immediately, not sooner or later to save lives and avert any catastrophe.
Good morning @LarryMadowo. We are a team of Ghanaians pushing our Ghanaian political leaders to #FixTheMotorway for us. We want to use social media to help push this agenda. Traction from you will help them act fast. We are losing lives each day on that major highway. It’s now a… pic.twitter.com/UxrCOrzFOU
Every day, families fear the journey on the Accra Tema motorway. But it's not just the roads. It's the hospitals awaiting our emergencies too. We deserve a better Ghana for our safety, for our lives. Let’s raise our voices louder. #FixTheMotorway#FixTheTemaMotorway
Cristiano Ronaldo recently shared his sentiments about his legendary rivalry with Lionel Messi while representing the Portugal national team. Ronaldo, now 38 years old, expressed nostalgia as he reflected on their illustrious careers.
During his discussion, Ronaldo was asked about Messi’s current stint with Inter Miami in Major League Soccer and his own prolific goal-scoring performances for Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia. Both players continue to capture headlines outside of Europe as they enter the twilight of their remarkable careers.
Ronaldo, known for his professionalism, displayed immense respect for Messi, who is 36 years old. Their mutual admiration for each other has always been evident, despite the worldwide debate over whether one must choose between the two football icons.
In his response, Cristiano Ronaldo also added a touch of self-praise by discussing himself in the third person, a characteristic that has become synonymous with CR7. Some things, it seems, never change.
“The rivalry is over,” Ronaldo said. “It was good, a healthy rivalry that spectators liked a lot. Whoever likes Cristiano Ronaldo doesn’t have to hate Messi or vice-versa because they’re both very good. They changed the history of football, and they keep on doing it.”
“We are respected throughout the world, that’s the most important thing. He makes his way, I make mine, even if we are playing outside Europe. He has done well, from what I’ve seen, and so have I. It’s about continuing. The legacy continues. The rivalry, I don’t see things like that. I’ve already said, we’ve shared the stage for 15 years and we ended up being, I wouldn’t say friends, because I never dined with him, but we are professional colleagues and we respect each other.”
While Ronaldo and Messi may not engage in the debate, the discussion over who holds the title of the greatest of all time (GOAT) will persist indefinitely.
Why? Because throughout their careers, these two football icons have been polar opposites. Messi, the cerebral maestro who embodied Barcelona, and Ronaldo, the mechanical marvel who epitomized Real Madrid, played the game in entirely distinct ways, both achieving dominance on their own terms.
There’s an abundance of admiration for both Messi and Ronaldo when it comes to their on-field performances, and it’s entirely possible to appreciate and love both of them and their unique playing styles simultaneously. There’s no need to make an exclusive choice.
Yet, for most individuals, choosing one or the other as the GOAT remains inevitable. However, it’s essential to recognize that you don’t have to make that choice. This is the message Cristiano Ronaldo is conveying.
The compelling nature of this rivalry stems from the fact that these two players have coexisted and reigned supreme simultaneously. Unlike Pele and Diego Maradona, whose careers didn’t overlap, the fact that these two GOAT contenders have not only coexisted but continue to do so is what draws us to compare and contrast.
It’s akin to having Tom Brady and Joe Montana playing in the same era and attempting to pick a favorite. People will inevitably make their choices, but you don’t have to. Instead, sit back and savor the remarkable journey, even as Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi now ply their trade on opposite sides of the globe as they bring their incredible careers to a close.
The Greater Accra Region of the Ghana National Fire Service recorded a 3% increase in fire outbreaks in the first half of 2023. The region recorded 662 fires in the first half of 2023, as against 640 fires for the same period in 2022.
Data from the Accra Regional Fire Command indicates that at least 66 people died and 24 others suffered injuries due to fire outbreaks and other related incidents in the first half of this year.
This is against 69 deaths and 162 injuries recorded in the previous year.
This was disclosed by the Greater Accra Regional Fire Commander, ACFO I Roberta Aggrey Ghanson during a media engagement at the Regional Headquarters in Accra.
Ghana recorded an increase in fire outbreaks from January to July this year compared to the same period in 2022, according to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).
Chief Fire Officer, Julius Kuunor noted that a total of 3,819 fire outbreaks were responded to by fire fighters in 2023, as against 3,678 cases last year.
This represents an increase of 3.8 per cent in fire outbreaks in the country.
The data was provided at the launch of the 2023 Fire Safety Week in connection with the 60th Anniversary in Accra, on the theme; ‘60 Years of Existence: Fire Safety, the Choice for a Safer Environment’.
Out of the total 3,819 fire outbreaks recorded in the period under review, 1,478 were domestic fires, followed by commercial fires, 636, bush fires, 559, electrical fires, 455, vehicular fires, 363, refuse dump fires, 168, institutional fires, 146, and industrial fires 14.
A breakdown of the fire outbreak cases recorded this year so far reveals that 827 cases were recorded in January, 728 cases in February, 622 cases in March, 506 cases in April, 428 cases in May, 337 cases in June, and 371 cases in July.
Meanwhile, ACFO I Ghanson, has charged the public to be fire safety conscious to prevent these unwanted fires.
Fire has swept through the Senchi Ferry Health Centre in the Asuogyaman District of the Eastern Region, causing extensive damage.
The destructive blaze raged for several hours and resulted in the destruction of two distinct sections within the health facility: one dedicated to reproductive and child health (RCH) and another to the mental health unit.
Numerous items, including vaccine carriers, furniture, air conditioning units, glass doors, T&J ceilings, and various healthcare equipment valued at over GHS 10,000, were lost in the fire.
The Operations Officer of the Asuogyaman National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Mr. George Mireku Asiamah, revealed that reports had been received indicating that a part of the health facility had caught fire on August 23rd, around 4pm.
According to Mr. Asiamah, a staff member at the health center reported hearing an unusual sound originating from the ceiling fan regulator, which eventually sparked and ignited the fire. Prior to the arrival of the fire service, individuals on-site used fire extinguishers and assistance from the local community to successfully contain the flames, ultimately extinguishing the fire.
Following a comprehensive assessment, Mr. Asiamah suggested that the root cause of the incident could be attributed to an electrical fault. He confirmed that the necessary report had been fully documented and would be forwarded to the relevant authorities for review.
Mr. Asiamah emphasized the need for the speedy restoration of the affected rooms in the coming weeks, as the facility plays a crucial role in providing healthcare services to the local community.
The Senchi Ferry Health Centre is among the most frequently visited healthcare facilities in the area, serving as a vital source of medical care for residents.
In response to the incident, the Asuogyaman District Chief Executive, Mr. Samuel Kwame Agyekum, and the coordinating Director conducted an inspection visit. They also planned to convene a management meeting promptly to discuss strategies for the rehabilitation of the fire-damaged facility.
Furthermore, the Member of Parliament for Asuogyaman Constituency, Mr. Thomas Ampem Nyarko, has taken proactive steps to address the situation. Reports indicate that he has deployed a team to assess the situation and compile a comprehensive report outlining potential solutions to expedite the resolution of the current challenges faced by the health center.
On Friday, September 1, 2023, a ceremony took place at Burma Camp to mark the change of command between Colonel (Col) AE Shooter and Col Jonas Wiafe in the Director Engineer Services, along with the unveiling of a state-of-the-art conference hall.
The Guest of Honour at the event, Major General (Maj Gen) Osei-Owusu, commended Col Shooter for the remarkable growth and accomplishments witnessed within the Directorate.
He emphasized Col Shooter’s unwavering dedication and visionary leadership, which had propelled the Directorate to new heights.
During his address, Col Shooter shared that his primary objective was to ensure the completion of an office block that would provide comfortable accommodations for all staff, along with a conference facility that befits an Engineer Unit. The construction of the office block was relatively straightforward since the framework was already in place.
However, the conversion of the former Orderly Room and Meeting Room into a conference facility presented more significant challenges. Col Shooter expressed his delight at the successful transformation of the old structure, thanks to the talented architects and engineers from the Directorate.
He also expressed gratitude to the Commanding Officer (CO) and the dedicated work staff from the 49 Engineer Regiment for their exceptional efforts.
The outgoing Director, Col Shooter, announced that the Conference Complex had been christened “HOLDFAST” and boasted two magnificent conference halls. The larger hall comfortably accommodated a minimum of 40 individuals around the table and could seat up to 85 people.
It featured full air-conditioning, modern audio-visual equipment, captivating lighting, and plush seating arrangements. The second hall, known as the Director’s Hall, offered a more intimate setting, accommodating 15 individuals with comfortable seating and world-class audio-visual capabilities.
Col Shooter emphasized that these two halls provided the Directorate with an ideal environment for hosting meetings and facilitating productive discussions.
He concluded by extending his heartfelt congratulations to Col Jonas Wiafe on his appointment as the new Director of Engineer Services. Col Shooter encouraged officers, enlisted personnel, women, and defense civilian staff to support the new Director in his endeavors to succeed.
The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, is of the firm assertion that God Almighty, described as Father for all, is a Ghanaian.
Mr Nketiah pronounced God a Ghanaian during the inauguration ceremony of 11 members of the party to serve as members of the National Executive Committee.
He noted that with God on Ghana’s side, the country will be able to avoid the military takeovers happening in the sub-region.
According to Mr Asiedu Nketiah, the tumbling of democratic governance in countries such as Niger, Burkina Faso, and Gabon should be a wake-up call for the government.
He admitted that the difficult economic conditions Ghanaians face, which have prompted military takeovers in other countries, will be resolved due to divine intervention.
He said: “We have never had this length of democratic stability, so it is something we should value and we shouldn’t toil with.
The happenings in the sub-region ought to be a wake up call. All of us, I know that the challenges are daunting. But somehow I believe that God is a Ghanaian so we shall overcome it. And we will survive and protect this our stability.”
Gabon’s military leadership has officially declared the cessation of the house arrest of ousted President Ali Bongo, asserting that he is now permitted to move freely.
In a statement broadcast on state television on Wednesday evening, Colonel Ulrich Manfoumbi, the military spokesperson, cited concerns for his health as the basis for the decision to release Mr. Bongo.
“He may, if he wishes, travel abroad for medical check-ups,” he added.
After the military orchestrated a coup on August 30th, they detained the former president in his residence and proclaimed their authority over the oil-rich nation.
The choice to release him comes in response to mounting pressure from the Central African regional alliance, ECCAS, as well as neighboring countries of Gabon, urging the preservation of the ousted head of state’s physical well-being.
In 2018, Mr. Bongo experienced a stroke, which raised significant apprehension among many in the lead-up to the presidential election of 2023 regarding his health.
Commissioner of Police (COP) George Alex Mensah, Superintendent Emmanuel Eric Gyebi and Superintendent George Lysander Asare have been interdicted by the Police administration over their connection with an audio tape that reveals plans to oust the Inspector General of Police, Dr George Akuffo Dampare.
The Police, in a statement dated September 7, noted that “the interdiction is to make way for disciplinary proceedings into their conduct in line with Police Service regulations.”
During interrogation, COP Alex Mensah registered his displeasure with the running of the police service under the tutelage of IGP Dr George Akuffo Dampare.
He accused the IGP of gagging several police bodies, leaving many police officers dissatisfied with his leadership.
Due to the severity of the issues being discussed, the Parliamentary Committee has decided to hold the remaining of its meetings in camera to get to the bottom of the issue.
Also, the Committee, according to Mr Atta Akyea, has in its possession a new audio. The Committee is expected to table its report to Parliament by September 10, 2023.
Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Citi 97.3 FM, Samuel Attah-Mensah, has shared his views on why former Trade Minister, Alan Kyerematen, has failed in his quest to become a flagbearer for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and subsequently, Ghana’s president.
After an abysmal performance at the NPP’s Super Delegates Conference, Mr Kyerematen withdrew from the presidential race.
He accused some leaders of the party for siding with one aspirant.
In his statement issued on September 5, he said: “After having carefully analysed the results of the said elections, it is absolutely clear to me from events leading to, during and after the elections, that the Special Delegates Conference was strategically and tactically skewed in favour of one particular Aspirant. The pronouncements made by some leading Members of our Party both before and after the elections, also lend weight to my observations.
But Samuel Attah-Mensah also known as Sammens, believes the factors that caused Mr Kyerematen’s defeat did not begin today.
During a discussion on the Citi Breakfast Show, Sammens noted that it was politically wrong for Mr Kyerematen to accept a ministerial position from President Akufo-Addo, who was once his contender for the NPP flagbearership role.
He explained that accepting such a position ensured that he submitted to President Akufo-Addo, who decided to pick, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as his running mate.
Sammens further noted that it is expected that the president would throw his weight behind Dr Bawumia who stood by his side as his running mate for eight years.
“Nana Akufo-Addo would not against all odds propose a certain Dr Bawumia to be running mate against the stance of the party, work with him for seven years and not stand with him at a point like this. You have submitted yourself under the man,” he said.
In 2003, Alan Kyerematen was appointed as the Cabinet Minister with responsibility for Trade, Industry, and the President’s Special Initiatives (PSI).
In May 2017, President Nana Akufo-Addo named Alan Kyerematen as part of the nineteen ministers who would form his cabinet.
For Samuel Attah-Mensah another reason Mr Kyerematen has been unsuccessful is over his inability to take charge of the Trade Ministry and leave a long lasting legacy.
“Again, while he was Minister, he did not create any space for himself to access his leadership, take ownership of something that will help garner his base.
“Top of my head, I don’t know where Alan’s political base is, if there is they can point that to us. It will be very difficult to say,” he noted.
The country is already engaged in significant initiatives aimed at achieving this transition, which includes a target of integrating 10 percent of renewable energy into its energy mix by 2030 and the development of an energy transition framework.
Speaking during a panel discussion at the Africa Climate Summit in Nairobi, Kenya, Dr. Opoku Prempeh emphasized that these efforts align with Ghana’s overarching commitment to the global climate agenda.
The initiatives represent Ghana’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and promoting sustainable energy sources in line with global climate goals.
He explained that some of Ghana’s energy initiatives dated back to 2005, adding “This is when we launched the appliance standards and labelling regime to date where we have passed legislation to back same.”
The Minister reported that a total of 124 megawatts of power were conserved through the replacement of 6,000 incandescent lamps with 6,000 compact fluorescent lamps as part of the lighting retrofit initiative.
He further explained that the implementation of standards and labeling for cooling appliances from 2010 to 2020 resulted in the conservation of 10.16 Terawatt-hour of electricity for the country.
During the same period, Ghana successfully reduced carbon dioxide emissions by 6.32 million tonnes by transitioning from diesel to natural gas to power electricity generation plants.
Dr. Prempeh also noted that, at present, 63 percent of the population has access to clean cooking methods, with 35 percent having access to liquified petroleum gas, 27 percent using improved biomass cookstoves, and one percent utilizing electric cooking.
“Government has supported the distribution of over 1.5 million improved biomass cookstoves since 2021 and currently supporting the distribution of another 500,000-biomass improved cookstoves,” he said
Government policies and interventions, he said, had positively impacted the clean cooking market, keeping it on track for investments, scaling up, and commercialization.
The energy sector has garnered significant attention and continues to attract major global players, thanks to the government’s new vision centered on a firm commitment to achieving Sustainable Development Goal Seven.
An Ethiopian opposition group has leveled accusations against government forces, alleging that they have been responsible for the deaths of numerous civilians in the tumultuous Amhara region, where ongoing clashes between local militias and the military persist.
According to a statement released by the Enat party, government troops allegedly killed 29 civilians, including children and the elderly, in the vicinity of their homes in the small town of Majete. The party further claimed that drone strikes resulted in the deaths of at least 20 civilians in two other areas within the region.
It’s important to note that the BBC has been unable to independently verify these claims, and there has been no response from the government regarding these allegations.
The conflict in Amhara erupted following simmering tensions that had built up over months, primarily triggered by controversial decisions to disband a paramilitary regional force. Critics argue that this move left the region vulnerable to attacks.
In early August, local militias entered most of the region’s major cities and briefly took control of an airport. Urban combat resulted in casualties, and a significant number of prisoners were freed.
While a semblance of normalcy has returned to the cities after government forces pushed the militias out, reports of ongoing fighting in or around several small towns and villages continue to emerge.
The situation is further compounded by an ongoing internet shutdown, making it challenging to obtain precise information regarding the scale of the conflict.
A 20-year-old farmer named Tajir Njadi has been sentenced by the Nkwanta District court, to six months of imprisonment with hard labor for stealing a Techno Pop 7 mobile phone valued at GH¢ 1,100.
The convict admitted to the offense and received the appropriate sentence. Police Inspector Bright Nana Nkansah, acting as the Prosecutor, presented the case in a court presided over by Mr. Joseph Evans Anang Okrupa.
According to Inspector Nkansah, on August 30, 2023, around 12 noon, Tajir Njadi unlawfully entered the room of Mr. Saja Larpi at Damanko in the Nkwanta North District, Oti Region, and absconded with the mobile phone.
A vigilant witness observed the theft in progress and raised an alarm, which led to the convict’s apprehension. Subsequent investigations confirmed Tajir Njadi’s culpability in the theft, resulting in his conviction.
The prosecution also informed the court that the convict had a track record of criminal activities and was a habitual thief who had been causing distress to Damanko residents with his thefts.
Consequently, they urged the court to impose a penalty to serve as a deterrent to others.
