Otumfuo Opoku Ware II, whose full name was Nana Opoku Ware II, was enstooled as the 15th Asantehene (King) of the Ashanti Kingdom in 1970.
The enstoolment marked his official ascension to the throne as the traditional leader and custodian of the Ashanti culture and people.
Opoku Ware II succeeded his uncle, Sir Osei Agyeman Prempeh II, who had reigned as the Asantehene prior to him. The enstoolment ceremony was a significant event in the history of the Ashanti Kingdom, as it signified the continuation of leadership and the preservation of cultural traditions.
Per reports, among those present were Dr. Kofi Busia, the then Prime Minister of Ghana, and Brigadier Akwasi Afrifa, the then Chairman of the Presidential Commission.

His leadership was marked by efforts to unite the Ashanti Kingdom and to promote education, infrastructure, and economic growth within the region.

It has emerged that the Police first filed charges at the Juvenile Court after being prompted by former Sanitation Minister, Cecilia Abena Dapaah, over some missing money from her residence at Abelempke.
This information is said to have been excluded from the details the Police provided to the Attorney General’s office over the matter.
Deputy Attorney General Alfred Tuah Yeboah has stated that the Attorney General’s office was not furnished with the full details surrounding the missing cash from the home of former Sanitation Minister, Cecilia Abena Dapaah, by the Police Service.
A recent report by JoyNews shed light on new documents indicating a comprehensive investigation conducted by the police in 2022.
According to these documents, on October 4, 2022, Cecilia Dapaah issued a warning to a member of her domestic staff, cautioning them against accessing specific rooms within the residence during their employment.
Despite this warning, on October 6, 2022, the staff member breached these instructions and was apprehended by Dapaah’s husband, Daniel Kuffuor.
Subsequently, Kuffuor reported the incident to the Tesano Police Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit, initiating an official complaint.
Upon Dapaah’s return on October 10, she conducted an inventory to identify the missing items from her room. The items included Kente cloth, women’s clothing, jewelry, and an undisclosed sum of money.
Subsequently, the police gathered a statement from the young suspect and proceeded to file appropriate charges. Later, on October 26, 2022, the suspect was presented before the Circuit Court. However, due to inconsistencies in determining her age, she was released and subsequently re-apprehended, with fresh charges being pressed in the Juvenile Court.
In spite of the initial charges being relatively minor, such as unlawful entry and entering premises for unlawful purposes, the suspect faced more serious accusations, including the theft of unspecified funds, as per the documented list of missing items.
Curiously, the obtained documents did not make reference to the alleged theft of 1 million dollars, suits, and other sums in Ghana cedis.
These allegations came to light in court filings against the same suspect and four accomplices in July 2023, all related to the original theft that took place in October 2022.
On Monday, the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup continued its action with the clash between England and Nigeria in the round of 16 at Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium in Australia.
The eventual outcome hinged on a penalty shootout, with England securing victory through four successful penalty kicks compared to Nigeria’s two.
Adding to the already intense spectacle, a significant highlight occurred late in the game.
England’s standout player, Lauren James, was shown a red card for stepping on the back of Nigeria‘s Michelle Alozie.
This expulsion reduced England’s player count to 10 as the match ventured into extra time.
Notable performances from Nigeria’s goalkeeper, Chiamaka Nnadozie, managed to keep the Super Falcons in contention, holding the match to a goalless draw.
However, England managed to clinch the victory in the end.
The Super Falcons unfortunately suffered a 4-2 defeat in the penalty shootout at the Women’s World Cup.
Mali has announced its intention to dispatch a joint delegation alongside Burkina Faso to Niger, as an expression of solidarity.
This decision follows closely on the heels of a defiance exhibited by the military generals who seized control in Niger against an ultimatum demanding the restoration of the elected president or the potential initiation of armed intervention by fellow West African nations.
The junta in control of Niger’s military declared the closure of the country’s airspace and signaled preparations to safeguard its territorial integrity.
Despite the issued ultimatum, the member nations of the regional group Ecowas are divided regarding the adoption of military measures.
Notably, Nigeria and Ivory Coast are steadfast in their stance that President Mohamed Bazoum should be reinstated.
In a contrasting perspective, the military administrations in Mali and Burkina Faso have indicated their alignment with the coup leaders, asserting their support in the event of an external attack.

Despite swift efforts to save him, Lambert succumbed to his injuries after being rushed to the hospital. His body has now been deposited at the Komfo Anokye Morgue.

The imprisoned opposition leader of Senegal, Ousmane Sonko, has been transported to a hospital for medical care.
Prior to this, Sonko embarked on a hunger strike within his prison confines as a form of protest against the charges laid against him.
His admission to a health facility has been confirmed by his political party and local sources. The statement from his political party also held the authorities accountable for his deteriorating condition.
Sonko, once at the helm of the dissolved Pastef party, was apprehended last week and faced multiple charges, including incitement to rebellion and plotting against the state.
Former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dan Botwe has urged the rank and file of the party to unite in support of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s candidacy, endorsing him to become the NPP’s next flagbearer.
The MP for the Okere Constituency made the appeal during the Vice President’s visit to the Okere Constituency last Sunday.
Drawing upon his extensive experience as a former General Secretary of the party and after thorough analysis of the various contenders and the current state of both the party and the nation, Dan Botwe asserted that the most fitting individual to steer the NPP forward is undeniably Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
“Since we started this flagbearership campaign, I have not spoken. But today I will speak. I was elected General Secretary of the NPP 25 years ago. I have had experience working under several stalwarts of the Party. I know the NPP very well. I know very well all the 10 people contesting. But I am here at Okere saying this. That anyone who knows me knows that I speak the truth and you cannot influence me with anything,” Dan Botwe said.
“I love all the aspirants, but I love the NPP more. My friends in the NPP, if we look at what is happening in Ghana and NPP now, we are looking into the future. Based on my knowledge of the Party and judging from what is happening, I want to say and ask all of you to go and vote for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.”
In his remarks, Dan Botwe emphasized the necessity for the NPP to adopt a strategic approach as they approach the 2024 election. He underlined that the most prudent and effective strategic choice for the party to secure victory in the upcoming election is to designate Vice President Bawumia as their chosen flagbearer.

A recent report by JoyNews has shed light on new documents indicating a comprehensive investigation conducted by the police in 2022. This investigation led to the filing of various charges both in the Juvenile Court and the Circuit Court.
According to these documents, on October 4, 2022, Cecilia Dapaah issued a warning to a member of her domestic staff, cautioning them against accessing specific rooms within the residence during their employment.

According to Mr Alfred Tuah Yeboah, the situation raises concerns about why the police did not include the case’s full details.
“The docket that was submitted to us had nothing about a case pending in any juvenile court. The only hint that we had was about the report at the Tesano Police Station. And so in terms of any prosecution going on at the Juvenile or Circuit Court (previously) we are not aware,” he stated on JoyNews’ News File programme.
Kpone (Le Sega) is a town in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana, located along the Eastern coast of the country, situated near the capital city, Accra.
The Le from the Sega Hills (present site of VALCO), who are related to the totemic Le people of La, Tema, and Nungua, and a group of later arrivals from Osodoku make up the Kpone confederation. This confederation makes up the current two boroughs (Akutsei) of Jɔɔshi (with 7 Clans) and Alata (with 3 Clans) respectively.
The basic form of subsistence for the Kpone people was fishing and farming until recently when industrialization within the Tema industrial zone has rendered farming almost extinct within the town. Fishing is however still practiced by a few family-owned fishing businesses.
The Kpone stool is called the Dortey stool named after Nene Dortey I (Akpeng bi Dortey), the founder of contemporary Kpone. The stool is however nicknamed Ashirikwa Jaku. Aya, a snake with a sacred grove, Klaŋ the hyena, which is also venerated in Teshie, and La and Osabu the Leopard were and are still the gods of Le Sega.
Currently, the Osabu and Klaŋ sacred groves are located adjacent each other at Mantse Agbo-Naa Agbonaa near the Shajotso (Baoba tree).
When the Alata quarters came to Sega, they brought the god Nadu with them and his wife Naa Bake. Mi music is used to worship all four of the Kpone principal gods in the Dangme language. Kplejoo is a festival for the gods during which both the gods and people are purified.
The festival lasts a whole month and takes place in June or July depending on where the moon stands in the sky. During this festival, a sheep or a cow is sacrificed to appease the gods and ward off mishaps and bad omen that might befall the town in the upcoming year.
The Kplejoo festival offers the chance to either admonish citizens of their wrongdoings or commend them for their good deeds through the singing of Kple songs by various teams within the boroughs. Some of the teams that participated in the 2023 edition include inter alia; Baamuchi, Angelina, Boaje, Downtown, Kpookeke, K20, Rasters, Station and NBA.
Connecting the two amalgamated systems of Kpone are a spectrum of Kple gods with their songs sang in Obutu. Gao, Laloi Bake, Okutenten (and his two wives, Afieye Okropɔŋ and Afiɔkɔ Samanyaa), Nyaŋkɔmle, Tsawe Otrome and Akpo Diŋla, are among them.
The fact that practically all Ga towns share the same Kple gods or the same god in various towns is equally instructive. Sakumɔ, the most senior deity of Tema, whose wulɔmɔ is the high priest of Tema, Tsade, Awudu (the horned, black-spitting serpent known as Blika), Akpitiɔkɔ, Okulate, Latekale, Ahulubeseikwa (which is also found in Kpone), and other Kple gods are all fed fotoli in Tema.
A variety of Kple deities, such as Gbɔbu (whose wulɔmɔ is the high priest of the entire GaDangme state), Oshwe whose wulɔmɔ is the Nungua Mantse), Osabu (also in Kpone), etc., are also worshipped by the Nungua people. The Kple gods of La include Nyɔŋmɔ Tsawe, Osabu, Klaŋ (the hyena deity also in Kpone), and others. The La-Kpa deity is the oldest god in La and exhibits traits of both a Kple and a war god in addition to being a war god.
The Homowo celebration is actually heralded by the Kple festival, and among the Kpone people, it is the Kple festival that initiates the Sɛi faayaa (purification of the Dortey stool), the principal festival of the Kpone people.
Early in February, the town is purified as part of the preparations for the Kplejoo festival. A white cow is killed and distributed among the elders of the 10 clans, and a black one killed, chopped into bits, and scattered across the Kpone town. The Kpone Mantse, who is also the wulɔmɔ of the Aya deity, notifies the community of his plans to observe the Sɛi faayaa in early May by the use of his gong-gong beater (town crier).
The presentation of corn (Abelejaa) to the gods to be used in their Nyedaa beverage comes next. During the Abelejaa ceremony, the first ban on drumming and noisemaking is placed. The shrines (gbatsui) are whitewashed a week later. On a Friday, the Aya shrine is whitewashed first, and on a Sunday, Osabu and Klaŋ’s are next.
On the next Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively, the Gao shrine and Diŋla are painted white. In the third week of May, there’s a wake-keeping for the Aya deity led by the Mantse on Thursday night in which Abletsi (ram) is sacrificed for Aya.
For the Aya deity, a special delicacy known as mushe (made with Abele mamu (corn flour) and palm oil) is also prepared and offered to the deity. The Aya priestess offers spiritual prayers for the community and its residents at this wake.
On the next Tuesday, what is called ‘journey to Le Sega’ is performed at the Gao shrine (on the banks of the Gao lagoon). This marks the first day of Kple. At this ceremony, a sheep is killed for the Gao deity and the priestesses murmur Kple songs as a form of worship for the Gao deity.
Just before sunset, the group that went to the Gao shrine (which includes the Mantse) makes a stop at the Okutenten shrine at Alata where special rites are performed with nyanyara (hyssop) leaves in a sese (wooden bucket) for cleansing by the priestesses.
This ceremony officially marks the beginning of the Kplejoo festival. The festival is repeated the next day which is a Wednesday. The Kple deity Akpla dugufue is worshipped at his shrine on the following Saturday. The Agbaafoiatse and the Akpla wulɔmɔ are in charge of this event.
The various Kple teams present a spectacular performance of Kple songs on the final day of Kple, which is the following Tuesday. The next Friday is the last day of Kple worship.
This ritual is performed in conjunction with jaratsemɔ, in which wɔyei (priestesses) visit various markets to collect goods and food from market women that are then distributed to the town’s elders at the Aya naa (forecourt of the Aya shrine).
The actual event is held at the Otutu of the Kple gods Abloma and Adade, which is situated at the forecourt of the Ati We clan.

Convenor for the #FixTheCountry movement, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, has announced his determination to persistently challenge Ghana’s political establishment, even going as far as invoking the notion of a coup d’état.
The activist holds the view that the mere suggestion of a coup unsettles the politicians of Ghana’s 4th Republic, making it a powerful tool to keep them accountable.
He expressed his perspective by saying, “When I talk about taking legal action, they dismiss it as they control the courts. When I talk about organizing protests, they dismiss it as they control the police. When I talk about revolution, they dismiss it as the people are disorganized.
“But when I mention a coup, they arrest me. Why? Now that I see it’s the only thing that makes you anxious, I’ll continue to mock you corrupt individuals with coup references until the people gather their strength and rise up! Or until you develop high blood pressure from constant worry.”
Barker-Vormawor is currently facing accusations of conspiring to overthrow the government and has been formally charged with treason felony. His arrest in February 2022 was prompted by a social media post that law enforcement interpreted as a direct expression of intent to undermine the country’s constitution, potentially through a coup.
In recent times, the West African region has witnessed a series of coup d’état events, raising concerns about the potential expansion of such incidents in neighboring countries.
Nevertheless, Ghana’s Defense Minister, Dominic Nitiwul, has categorically dismissed any concerns regarding a potential military takeover in Ghana. Nitiwul has underscored that unlike other West African nations such as Guinea, Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger, Ghana’s Armed Forces are unwavering in their commitment to uphold the constitution.
He highlighted that the defense of the constitution takes precedence over any actions that could undermine it, including coup attempts.
The Los Angeles Lakers have reached an agreement with eight-time All-Star forward Anthony Davis on a contract extension lasting three years and valued at $186 million.
Davis, aged 30, still has two years left on his initial five-year contract worth $190 million. With this extension, his commitment to the Lakers extends until the conclusion of the 2027-28 season.
Since playing a pivotal role in the Lakers’ victory during the 2020 NBA Finals, Davis has been regarded as a cornerstone of the franchise. There were uncertainties about his long-term plans in Los Angeles, especially with LeBron James approaching the final year of his contract.
In the previous season, Davis showcased his prowess by averaging 25.9 points, 12.5 rebounds, and 2.6 assists per game, all while achieving a career-high shooting percentage of 56.3% from the field.
Selected as the top overall pick in the 2012 draft, Davis continues to hold a prominent position among the NBA’s elite players, provided he remains in good health. However, he has encountered difficulties in maintaining his presence on the court, having been absent for a total of 104 games throughout the past three seasons.
Despite Davis’ recent injury challenges, the Lakers managed to reach the Western Conference finals in the previous season. Coupled with a positive offseason, the team is poised for high expectations in Los Angeles. However, the ongoing concerns regarding the durability of both Davis and LeBron James still linger.
“We are trending in the right direction,” Davis said at the end of last season. “Obviously, the goal is to win championships, and we wanted to be not just knocking on the door but actually get it done, walk through the door. So that’s our goal. That’s our goal every time we step on the floor for training camp, and I’m 100-percent sure that will be the goal next year.”
During 11 NBA seasons, Davis has averaged 24 points, 10.4 rebounds and 2.4 assists, along with 2.31 blocks and 1.34 steals.
In 55 career playoff games, Davis has averaged 25.9 points, 11.4 rebounds and 2.7 assists while shooting 53.3 percent from the field.
The hiked price of sanitary towels in Ghana has resulted in some women deploying other means and materials to use during menstruation, according to editor of the Insight Newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jnr
From using untreated fabrics, tissues, to corn husk, some women, in recent times are using diapers when menstruating, he said while speaking on Good Morning Ghana.
According to Mr Kwesi Pratt Jnr, the inability of some women and girls to change their pads during menstruation is having health implications on them.
He therefore called on the government to scrap the taxes on sanitary pads for women. He stressed that such an action will solidify government’s stance that it protects women and girls in the country.
“There is one thing which is absolutely shocking, the utter disregard for the plight of women and the demands of women. You remember the don’t tax my period campaign…the demand was not just mentioned and I’m sitting back and I am just wondering. We all say that we want to protect the interest of women and so on and such a crucial issue,” he said.
“If you talk to health practitioners, they are telling you that now, many women have sexual diseases and so on. Why, because the pads they use when they have their periods and other things are so expensive they cannot buy so what some women are doing is, they are using pampers because it absorbs a lot more blood and so on. Some of them wear it in the morning and dispose it off in the evening some even the next day. It causes diseases,” he added.
Kwesi Pratt Jnr said he could not fathom why government lists sanitary pad as a luxury item when every girl needs it.
Sanitary products attract 32.5 percent tax on imported sanitary pads which is made up of 20 percent import duty and 12.5 percent in Value Added Tax.
In a dramatic turn of events, defending champions the United States were eliminated from the World Cup as Sweden‘s Lina Hurtig scored the decisive penalty in a tense shootout.
Sweden secured their spot in the quarter-finals following a resolute defensive display that led to a goalless extra-time draw.
During the penalty shootout, the US initially gained an advantage when Nathalie Bjorn missed her shot and Rebecka Blomqvist’s attempt was saved by Alyssa Naeher. However, the US couldn’t capitalize on these opportunities, with Megan Rapinoe and Sophia Smith missing their targets.
The pivotal moment arrived when Kelley O’Hara struck the post, and Hurtig’s shot was initially saved by Naeher, but the ball crossed the line on its way down, confirmed by goal-line technology. This delay ultimately sent Sweden through.
In the first half, the US dominated play, but goalkeeper Zecira Musovic thwarted Trinity Rodman’s attempt, and Lindsey Horan’s header hit the crossbar.
Sweden struggled to register a shot on target in the opening 45 minutes. The second half followed a similar pattern, with Vlatko Andonovski’s team controlling possession, though squandering opportunities from Lindsey Horan and Alex Morgan.
Sweden nearly snatched victory in the 85th minute when Sofia Jakobsson found space in the box but directed her shot straight at Naeher.
The US almost secured a late winner of their own, with Morgan’s header on target, yet Musovic once again dealt with the danger.
In extra time, the US continued to dominate, but Musovic’s brilliance denied them multiple times. Musovic parried Lynn Williams’ cross-shot and deflected Megan Rapinoe’s follow-up.
Despite persistent waves of US attacks, Sweden’s defense held firm, and Musovic turned away Smith’s powerful angled shot. Ultimately, Sweden sent the US packing before the semifinal stage, marking the first time in history that the four-time winners were eliminated from the tournament at this juncture.
Unilever Ghana Plc, a company known for producing and marketing home care, personal care, and food products, has initiated a Plastic Waste Employee Drive aimed at clearing 10,000 metric tonnes of plastic waste from Ghana’s shores.
In collaboration with the Coastal Conservancy Organization and the Ghana Recycling Initiative by Private Enterprises, this effort aims to address the plastic waste issue.
The project began at Tema Community Three Beach, where community volunteers and Unilever Ghana staff collaborated to remove over four metric tonnes of plastic waste, including sachets and bottles, on a recent Thursday.
Mayank Kapoor, the Supply Chain Director at Unilever Ghana, who participated in the cleanup, shared that the company is dedicated to achieving the target of collecting 100% recyclable, reusable, or compostable plastics by the year 2025, a goal that is already in progress.
Kapoor also highlighted that globally, 400 million metric tonnes of plastic are produced annually, with half of that being single-use plastic that ends up polluting oceans and harming marine life.
He stressed the importance of maintaining clean beaches, as this contributes to a flourishing marine ecosystem and safeguards the natural environment for generations to come.
Kapoor also urged the media to raise awareness about plastic pollution and prevention, particularly among children who represent the future leaders.
Justice Lionel Eshun, Chairman of the Coastal Conservancy Organisation, expressed satisfaction with the collaboration with Unilever to tackle plastic waste.
He noted that this joint effort would result in a cleaner environment and ensure unobstructed water flow in storm drains. Eshun appealed to the public to adopt responsible waste management practices.
Jennifer Cudjoe, a Ghanaian national team player, has officially become a part of Danish club FC Nordsjaelland’s roster for the upcoming 2023/24 season.
Cudjoe has committed to a one-year contract with FC Nordsjaelland, and the club revealed this signing on Friday, August 4.
Although she spent the majority of her career and also pursued her education in the United States, the 29-year-old athlete is now preparing to embark on her inaugural season in European football with FC Nordsjaelland.
“Jennifer will join the team as one of the oldest, which is why, with her previous experiences, she will bring a lot of experience with her to our young Women’s League team,” the club’s sports director Jessica Davis said.
Cudjoe marked her debut for the Danish team FC Nordsjaelland Women during a pre-season friendly match against HB Koge.
Additionally, Cudjoe was a crucial member of Nora Hauptle’s squad that emerged victorious over Guinea in the initial round of qualifiers for the 2024 Olympic Games.
In her earlier career, Cudjoe contributed her skills to Ghana’s national teams, the Black Maidens and the Black Princesses, participating in the FIFA Women’s Youth World Cup.
Brighton appears to be on the verge of outpacing Arsenal and Chelsea in securing the signing of Ajax winger Mohammed Kudus.
The 23-year-old Ghanaian talent has swiftly garnered recognition as one of global football’s most promising attacking prospects, impressing both at Ajax and on the international stage.
Reportedly turning down a contract extension offer from his current club in April, Arsenal and Chelsea have both been vying to entice Kudus to London.
Yet, according to David Ornstein from The Athletic, it’s Brighton that has now taken the lead, having agreed upon a £34.5 million transfer fee to bring him to the Amex Stadium.
Discussions between the player and the club are currently underway, aiming to finalize what could be a standout addition to Roberto De Zerbi’s squad, which is set to compete in the Europa League.
Kudus, who is also versatile enough to play as an attacking midfielder or a central striker, impressively netted 18 goals across 42 matches for Ajax in the previous season, including four goals in six Champions League appearances.
Kudus also received praise for his performances at the Qatar World Cup, notably scoring two goals in Ghana’s thrilling 3-2 victory over South Korea.
His current manager, Maurice Steijn, recently shared his perspective on Kudus’ future, advising the young talent to remain with the team.
Steijn said: “I feel that when Kudus decides to stay for one more year, the real top clubs will then come for him.
“If we win the league and he scores 20 goals, clubs will pay double for him. This is what we are trying to tell him now.”
However, the 49-year-old’s plea appears to have fallen on deaf ears.
The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has appealed to the government to allow the institution retain all or at least some of its internally generated funds (IGF), including service charges.
Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the FDA, Dr. Delese Darko, made this request during the Authority’s inaugural stakeholder meeting, where they discussed regulatory activities and their achievements in 2022.
According to the CEO, this will enhance the financial capabilities of the Authority, allowing it to effectively fulfill its responsibilities. Dr. Darko also stressed on the need for improved conditions of service in order to retain highly skilled staff within the organization.
Additionally, the Authority advocated for a standalone Act to guide its operations, accommodating changes in the regulatory landscape and aligning with international best practices.
The FDA acknowledged some challenges, such as inadequate inspection vehicles, aging laboratory equipment, and the absence of an ICUMS module for processing exports.
The gathering served as a platform for the FDA to interact with stakeholders, receive feedback on their performance, identify areas for improvement, and raise awareness about the Authority’s role in safeguarding public health and safety.
The FDA highlighted its achievements in 2022, comparing them to those of 2021. Notably, the number of facilities inspected increased by 24% to 9,829 in 2022 from 7,913 in 2021. Import and export controls also saw a significant 36% growth in FDA operations.
The Authority addressed various topics during the meeting, including the licensing of street food vendors, market surveillance activities, and product quality testing conducted in 2022.
As part of its role to advise the Health Minister on consumer protection measures, the FDA proposed amendments to certain sections of the Public Health Act 851.
With regards to achievements of the FDA, they included expanding the Centre for Laboratory Services and Research’s (CLSR) ISO 17025:2017 accreditation, accrediting the Food Laboratory for the first time, and achieving WHO GBT ML4 status for the Drugs Laboratory.
Other achievements encompassed operationalizing the joint application system with the Ghana Standard Authority (GSA) for simultaneous FDA registration and GSA certification.
The FDA also opened new offices for enhanced client accessibility and launched the ProPer Platform with ProPer Alliance, allowing consumers to verify the registration status of FDA-regulated products and exercise batch control.
Dr. Darko assured stakeholders of the FDA’s commitment to enhancing its regulatory processes. Attendees at the meeting included members of the FDA Governing Board, representatives from the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Finance, Plant Protection and Regulatory Services Directorate of the Ministry of Agriculture, GSA, Customs, SIGA, and various trade organizations.
The Pan-African movement known as Africans Rising has issued a strong condemnation of the recent military seizure of power in Niger.
Soldiers, primarily from the presidential guard, carried out a takeover on July 27, resulting in the capture of Niger’s President Mohamed Bazoum. This event led to the dissolution of the constitution, the suspension of all institutions, and the closure of the country’s borders.
Since July 2, President Mohamed Bazoum has remained in the custody of the presidential guard. In response to these alarming developments, Africans Rising has called upon international and regional organizations, including the African Union and ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States), to engage in constructive dialogues with all relevant stakeholders. The aim of such dialogues is to ensure the restoration of peace and stability within the nation.
Africans Rising has stressed the importance of seeking peaceful resolutions and has expressed its disagreement with the threats of military intervention that have been voiced by certain ECOWAS member states.
The movement strongly asserts that such actions would result in the unnecessary loss of innocent lives and escalate the existing challenges within the nation. Instead, they emphasize the significance of engaging in dialogue and employing diplomatic solutions that won’t worsen the predicament faced by the impoverished population.
Furthermore, the movement offers guidance to European and Western nations, urging them to refrain from meddling in the internal affairs of African countries.
They firmly reject any attempts to transform West Africa or any other African region into a battleground for proxy conflicts among competing global powers. Africans Rising staunchly upholds Africa’s sovereignty and autonomy, underscoring that the continent should not be treated as an extension of any external nation or continent.
“We must resist any moves that will make West Africa or any part of Africa the threatre of war by proxy between competing powers. It is very important for external powers from West and East to steer clear of Africa’s internal affairs and desist from making reckless statements hinting at military action. We will not tolerate any such rhetoric. Africa is not the extension of any other country or continent.”
New Patriotic Party delegates of the Ejumako Enyan Essuam Constituency, have come out to clarify a controversial issue involving the Vice President that has gained massive attention.
In a viral video circulated on social media, the delegates were seen hooting and chanting “Away” in a church auditorium where Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and his campaign team were meeting delegates of the party as part of his ongoing flagbearer campaign tour.
But the delegates have clarified that the Vice President was not the subject of their chants, but rather the District Chief Executive (DCE) for Ajumako Enyan Essiam, Ransford Kwesi Nyarko.
“It is a total lie that the decent and well-behaved delegates of Ajuamko Enyan Essiam did such a thing to the well-respected Vice President of our country.
“Rather, His Excellency the Vice President, Alhaji Dr Mahamudu Bawumia received a very rapturous welcome in Ajumako Enyan Essiam yesterday. His message of hope was well received by the delegates,” a statement emanating from the group said.
Viewing the action as untoward, the delegates have rendered an apology to Ransford Kwesi Nyarko.

Rather, His Exceency the Vice President ,Alhaji Dr Mahamudu Bawumia ,.received a very rapturous welcome in Ajumako Enyan Essiam yesterday. His message of hope was well received by the delegates.
The incident in the said video, though unfortunate, took place when the DCE for Ajumako Enyan Essiam was introduced by the MC for the programme. So, it was the DCE who was booed at by some few party people who had come to observe the programme.

The Vice President delivered a very touching and inspiring message to the good delegates of Ajumako Enyan Essiam which resulted in the delagates giving him a standing ovation and pledging our unflinching support and votes for the Vice President.
The Vice President spoke decently, never attacked any aspirant or his policy. Alhaji Dr Mahamudu Bawumia exhibited very sterling leadership qualities through out his speech in Ajuamko Enyan Essiam .

The security services and residents of Akaa Community in the Jasikan Municipality of the Oti Region have intensified their search for a 74-old-man who allegedly tied a nine-year old boy to a tree for “stealing” oranges.
Timothy Gyamfi Mensah, a retired Circuit Supervisor who allegedly tied the Primary School boy with nylon rope to an orange tree for allegedly stealing two oranges, has absconded after the boy was rescued.
The boy was rescued by some community members after several searches by his grandmother later discovered he was tied to the tree after the incident went viral in a video.
Checks by the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in the vicinity indicated that the entire Akaa community was surprised that a retired professional teacher could do that to a school pupil.
Mr. Entwi Baikaa, a native of Akaa and Government Appointee to the Jasikan Municipal Assembly, who confirmed the incident to the GNA in an interview, said the boy went to Mr Mensah’s house and plucked two oranges, but met his predicament when the furious man, grabbed him, and molested him by tying him to the orange tree.
He said unfortunately, the majority of Akaa inhabitants were only informed by social media when the video went viral.
Mr. Baikaa who said Mr. Gyamfi was currently at large, added that after the incident, Madam Ama Bekoe Donkor, the grandmother of the boy took him to the Jasikan Municipal Hospital, where he had been treated and discharged and is currently back at Akaa.
He said a team of Criminal Investigations Department of the Ghana Police Service from Jasikan who were at the community to investigate the case were led to the crime scene by the victim.
Mr. Baikaa, who is also acting as an Assemblyman for Akaa Electoral Area, said the case had been reported to the Jasikan Municipal Chief Executive, Mrs. Elizabeth Kessiwaa Anim-Adjanor, who promised to make sure that justice was served.
Mr. Annobil Isaac, Jasikan Municipal Director of Health Services, when contacted by GNA, said the case had not come to her attention but promised to check from the OPD and get back on Monday.
Meanwhile, the Police have mounted a search to arrest the perpetrator.
Dan Evans advanced to the final of the Citi Open by defeating Grigor Dimitrov in straight sets in Washington.
The British second-ranked player outplayed his Bulgarian counterpart with a score of 6-3, 7-6 (4) in a match lasting under two hours. This victory sets up a final showdown with Tallon Griekspoor from the Netherlands.
Despite facing a power disadvantage, Evans showcased a composed and flawless performance, while Dimitrov struggled with errors. The world number 20 managed to hit 24 winners compared to Evans’ nine, but his game faltered with 30 unforced errors.
Notably, Evans becomes the first British player to reach the final in Washington since Andy Murray accomplished the feat in 2006.
On the other hand, Griekspoor battled back from a set down in his semifinal encounter against American Taylor Fritz, as the world number 37 aims for his third title of the season.

Within the Ketu South Municipal area, the Dei Foundation, a Non-Governmental Organization, has extended its support to approximately 200 candidates preparing for the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) at Avoeme Basic School.
This academic institution has enrolled 196 candidates for the upcoming Basic Education Certificate Examination scheduled to commence in the following week. In an effort to equip these candidates for their final examination, the Dei Foundation collaborated with the school’s administration to conduct a brief preparatory program aimed at enhancing their mental readiness for the exams.
As a part of this program, the Foundation distributed mathematical set instruments to the 196 candidates. This initiative is intended to mitigate challenges associated with solving questions related to construction within mathematics and science subjects.
Xornam Alayi-Hussey, the Public Relations Officer of the Dei Foundation, emphasized that mathematical sets are crucial educational tools; however, not all parents are able to afford them for their children. Hence, the Foundation chose to step in and provide this support.
“It has become necessary to do this because we have realized that not all students have some of this simple things and it’s not their fault, some of them, their parents cannot afford and as an NGO poised for such supports, we deemed it necessary and considering the high number of Avoeme, we chose them as our maiden project in this regard,” she said.
Torgbui Labi I, the Dufia of Avoeme Yokoe and an alumnus of the school, honored the occasion with his presence. He utilized this opportunity to inspire the candidates, assuring them of achieving a flawless 100 percent pass rate.
In his words of wisdom, he urged the candidates to approach their revisions diligently during these final days and encouraged them to excel in their endeavors.
“This year, your worst aggregate should be 23 to maintain your performance records, don’t let my coming here be in vain” Torgbui said.
Addressing the students, Mr. Courage Babanawo, a seasoned professional nurse, offered insights into medical matters that could impact them and strategies to manage anxiety during the examination period.
He counseled them against staying up late the night before the exam day and stressed the importance of taking their health conditions seriously.
“Those of you who have asthma or any serious medical issues, don’t forget to take your medications along and don’t starve yourselves before going for exams, you can’t write exams on empty stomach,” he advised.
The students displayed significant motivation and expressed their gratitude towards the Dei Foundation. They believed that the provision of mathematical sets would greatly aid them in approaching construction-related questions with confidence.
Regarding their level of readiness, the students conveyed their confidence in the extensive efforts their teachers had invested in them. This confidence led them to believe that they would excel in their exams.
Mr. Maclean Mensah, the Assistant Headteacher, shared in their optimism, expressing his belief in achieving satisfactory results.
“They all have a very bright future if only they will take all that we shared with them very serious…I see another 100% pass record this year because we have prepared them very well academically for the exams,” Mr. Mclean said
Avoeme Basic School has a total of about 1,896 pupils from kindergarten to JHS 3 with 196 BECE candidates this year.
The school recorded 100 per cent twice in their Basic Education Exams within the last five years.
At the Sydney Football Stadium, the Netherlands brought an end to South Africa’s impressive journey to the knockout stages of the Women’s World Cup, securing a 2-0 triumph.
In the second half, a fortuitous strike by Lineth Beerensteyn proved to be the decisive factor, sealing the victory for the Dutch team against a resilient South African squad. This victory now paves the way for an exciting quarter-final clash between the Netherlands and Spain.
South Africa commenced the match with a spirited approach, employing their speed advantage to take the first shot on goal. However, Netherlands’ goalkeeper Daphne van Domselaar was quick to secure the ball, thwarting the attempt.
After withstanding the initial offensive, the Dutch team capitalized on their first cross during the afternoon. A failed clearance set the stage for a close-range header by Jill Roord, marking her fourth goal in the tournament.
Throughout the first half, South Africa’s defense appeared unsettled, leading to frequent squandered possession and maintaining pressure on their side.
Challenges increased as injuries forced Jermaine Seoposenwe and Bambanani Mbane to leave the field for South Africa. Despite this, the Netherlands couldn’t find the pivotal second goal to further secure their lead.
As the initial 45 minutes transpired, the majority of the time was spent with South Africa defending within their own territory. However, the balance of momentum shifted in South Africa’s favor as the clock reached the brink of added time.
Thembi Kgatlana, the striker renowned for her swiftness, managed to challenge the Dutch defense on several fleeting opportunities when she found herself in open spaces. Just before halftime, she came heartbreakingly close to leveling the score.
In an impressive display of speed, she outpaced the defense to collect a well-timed through ball, positioning herself perfectly. Nonetheless, the scrambling efforts of goalkeeper van Domselaar ensured that the Dutch maintained their lead as the first half concluded.
The Netherlands secured their second goal in the 68th minute. Lineth Beerensteyn launched a long-range attempt toward South Africa’s goalkeeper, Kaylin Swart.
Although Swart managed to get her hands on the ball, the shot slipped through her grasp and nestled into the net.
In the upcoming clash against Spain, the Dutch will be without midfielder Danielle van de Donk, who received her second yellow card of the tournament.
A group of robbers who carried out a lethal assault on two cargo vehicles at Anyinamso No. 1 in the Ashanti Region are now the target of an extensive police manhunt.
Tragically, this incident led to the loss of one individual’s life.
In a bold and audacious act, the attackers managed to seize Two Thousand Ghana Cedis (GH₵ 2,000.00) and three mobile phones.
Their escape was facilitated by the timely spotting of a Police patrol team approaching the area. Swiftly disappearing into a nearby thicket, the robbers eluded the Police’s attempt to apprehend them.
The aftermath of this event has left the community in a state of shock and sorrow. The law enforcement agencies are unwavering in their commitment to ensure that those responsible for this crime are brought to justice.
The authorities have offered reassurance to the public, affirming their determination to exert every possible effort in locating and arresting the individuals behind this incident.
“We wish to assure the public that we will surely get the robbers arrested to face justice,” the Police said in a statement.
On a Saturday morning, a group of young individuals from Bimbilla, situated in the Nanumba North municipality within the Northern region, took action by entering the premises of the Bimbilla Hospital.
Their primary demand was the removal of the current Medical Superintendent, Dr. Barhama Adam.
The basis for their demand was the accusation of the Superintendent’s involvement in mismanagement and neglect, specifically in relation to the persistent water crisis afflicting the hospital.
Over the course of the last six months, the Bimbilla Hospital has been struggling with a severe shortage of water, significantly impacting its capacity to provide healthcare services to the local population.
This scarcity of water has resulted in significant disruptions to the hospital’s operations. The situation has been further aggravated by an ongoing strike by nurses, who are deeply concerned about the absence of adequate water supply.
Their protest stems from worries about infection risks and their ability to perform their duties efficiently under these challenging circumstances.
Due to the accumulation of unpaid bills totaling over two hundred and forty thousand Ghana cedis, the water supply to the hospital had been disconnected. This financial issue had persisted for several months.
Consequently, individuals in need of medical care were faced with two options: being turned away or redirected to alternative healthcare facilities in Yendi or nearby private clinics.
Driven by their frustration and genuine concerns for the welfare of their community, the young people gathered at the hospital premises. Their demands extended beyond the removal of the Medical Superintendent, encompassing the dismissal of other key administrators at the forefront of the ongoing water crisis.
A representative from the NPP in the constituency, who also serves as a youth organizer, made an appeal to the government for swift intervention. The urgency of the situation was underlined by fears that if left unchecked, the issue could escalate and cast a negative light on the NPP administration.
In light of the increasing pressure from various quarters, the Medical Superintendent of Bimbilla Hospital, Dr. Barhama Adam, responded by offering assurance to the public.
He stated that efforts were being actively undertaken to address the pending water bills. Dr. Adam appealed to the youth for understanding and patience as they navigate the process of resolving this issue.
During this period, the hospital has been occupied with renovating its wards, a situation that has raised queries from concerned young individuals. Their concerns revolve around the allocation of resources and their prioritization.
They question whether the funds allocated for the ongoing renovation could potentially be redirected towards settling the outstanding water debt. This redirection of funds, they argue, could potentially alleviate the crisis and subsequently reinstate the crucial functions of the hospital.
Pep Guardiola, the manager of Manchester City, has voiced his apprehensions regarding the pressures placed on players, especially in light of recent developments such as the expanded Club World Cup and extended playing time in matches.
Having secured a treble victory last season by clinching the Champions League title, Manchester City is scheduled to participate in the December Club World Cup held in Saudi Arabia. This edition is intended to be the last with seven teams, as the subsequent tournament in the summer of 2025 will feature 32 teams and take place in the United States.
Furthermore, there has been a notable increase in added time during matches, a strategy observed during the previous World Cup held in Qatar, aimed at curbing time-wasting. This alteration is poised to be implemented in Premier League matches for the upcoming season.
Speaking ahead of his side opening their 2023-24 campaign with Sunday’s Community Shield clash against Arsenal, Guardiola said: “I know at the end of next season, we are going to make a (Club) World Cup in the United States after finishing the season, two or three more weeks. That means the holidays will be 15 days or maybe three weeks.
“I think it doesn’t exist already, pre-seasons. The problem is here (touching his head) – exhausted. Look already how many players are injured in pre-season, in bad conditions, humidity, hot, the pitches are not really good, especially in the States.
“It is what it is, so we have to adapt, adjust – but it is not normal.
“Now, for example, every game we’re going to play for 100 minutes. Wasting time – from my point of view it is not going to be solved by extending 10 more minutes. It’s more tiring for the players. It’s too much.
“FIFA, UEFA – more competitions. The World Cup – more teams. This (Club) World Cup – I don’t know how many teams.
“I don’t know what (is going to happen) in the future, for the players, even the managers, to prepare. That’s why you have to see exactly how much you demand of the players.
“Every day, season by season, it’s difficult to handle for the players. They love to play but they need also recovery, with the stress and tension they have. They make a show like they do in front of 55-60,000 people – that is a lot of energy, mental energy, and every week, to do it, is a lot.
“But every year is getting worse and worse, and will be worse. I don’t know how it is going to end, honestly.”
As City prepare to hunt down further silverware, Guardiola has stressed the need for a game-by-game approach in which they “respect incredibly the opponent, do our best to win in the way we believe is better – and after we will see”.
And he added: “I would say honestly we are closer to not repeating the treble than winning it, we are closer to not winning the Premier League than winning it. And no team ever won four in a row.
“Last season – I didn’t start thinking we are going to win the treble. We started, ‘let’s go to try to win (the Community Shield) against Liverpool’ and we lost 3-1.
“And after (that) we won and step by step, good moments. Normally we arrive (in the last few months of the season) in a good mentality and shape, and this is what we are going to try to do again.”
City’s inaugural Champions League victory in June further bolstered their impressive collection of honors under Guardiola’s leadership since 2016, which includes five league titles, two FA Cups, and four League Cups.
Guardiola, the Catalan mastermind, extended his commitment to the club by signing a contract that extends until 2025 in November of the previous year. When questioned about the possibility of contemplating an exit following the triumphant treble win, he responded by affirming his contentment and comfort with his decision to sign the contract.
“Nothing changed, for the fact of win or not win. It is how I am happy, and the people is happy, the board especially, the hierarchy, because in the end they decide which manager has to lead this group of players. If they are satisfied, I still am satisfied.
“I want to defend what we won and year by year, maybe at the end of the season I am tired, or I say we will talk with the club, or maybe extend more, I don’t know.”
The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has taken into custody a food vendor known as Faustina Naana Eshien, situated at the OA Bus Terminal in Accra, for vending spoiled food to unsuspecting customers.
She was apprehended by the Public Health Department on Tuesday, August 2, 2023, following a social media post by Obaa Yaa Bediide on the Trotro Diaries platform.
The post disclosed the sale of subpar food after a purchase was made from the said vendor.
Faustina Naana Eshien admitted to the act, citing lack of customers as the rationale. She also resorted to dividing the cost of the chicken, priced at GHC20, into two portions.
Head of Public Affairs at the AMA, Mr. Gilbert Ankrah, noted that aside vending deteriorated fried chicken for public consumption, Fautina neglected to acquire the essential medical health certification.
Such actions contravene the AMA’s regulations and the provisions outlined in the Public Health Act, 2012 (Act 851) Section 100 (3). This section explicitly proscribes the sale or offering for sale of tainted or unsuitable food meant for human or animal consumption. This includes food containing unclean, putrid, decayed, or unhealthy animal or plant substances.
In response, the food vendor will be subjected to legal proceedings to serve as a deterrent for potential offenders.
Mr. Ankrah encouraged the general public to insist on inspecting food handler’s certificates from vendors before making any purchases.
In addition, he advised food vendors in the metropolis to strictly adhere to the five keys to safer food: “keep clean, separate raw and cooked foods, cook food thoroughly, keep food at safe temperatures, and use safe water and raw materials.”
He urged individuals lacking food handlers’ certification to avail themselves at the AMA or its affiliated Assemblies for assessment, aimed at upholding consumer safety.
Mr. Ankrah highlighted the consistent commitment of Public Health officers in monitoring food vendors to guarantee adherence to safety protocols, as stipulated by the AMA’s regulations and public health mandates.
Underscoring the shared responsibility for upholding food safety, from its production to consumption, he lauded the individual who reported the misconduct of the food vendor, emphasizing their valuable contribution in unveiling such unethical practices.

This comes after the Council discovered that some parents moved their children from private schools to public schools to be registered while they were yet to complete the JHS education.
The number of candidates that registered for this year’s BECE (SC) is 8.8% higher than the 2022 entry figure of 552,276.
With regards to the BECE for private candidates, a total entry figure of 1,743 candidates was recorded and this is made up of 889 males and 854 females. This year’s figure is 5.4% higher than the entry figure of 1,132 for 2022.
Andy Murray fell just short in a grueling three-hour battle against world number nine Taylor Fritz in the round of 16 at the Citi Open.
The 36-year-old, a runner-up in Washington 17 years ago, appeared to be on the cusp of another notable victory since his return from hip surgery. He had break point opportunities for a 4-2 advantage in the deciding set.
However, Fritz, the tournament’s top seed and the American number one, successfully fended off all three break points and ultimately secured his 40th victory of 2023 with a 6-7 (2), 6-3, 6-4 scoreline.
A thrilling contest faced a momentary interruption as a group of rowdy protesters, who had tossed oversized tennis balls onto the court, were escorted out of the stands.
Murray had already vented his frustration by smashing his racket against the floor after losing his serve in the opening game, which included two double faults among six unforced errors.
The Scottish player had been a point away from a 3-0 deficit, but he displayed improvement as the set unfolded. He managed to break back for 5-5 while Fritz served for the set, staving off two set points and converting his initial break point with a well-executed drop shot.
Murray claimed the tie-break in commanding fashion, capitalizing on Fritz’s visible frustration, and secured the set in 87 minutes with an almost dismissive forehand winner.
Nonetheless, Fritz quickly rallied, breaking early in the second set to level the match.
During the decider, Fritz withstood break points at 2-3, and Murray’s double fault presented the 25-year-old with three opportunities to break, with Fritz capitalizing on the second occasion when Murray’s backhand sailed long.
In a climactic final game, Murray brought forth three break-back points at 0-40, yet Fritz emerged unscathed. Fritz then saw two match points slip away before successfully converting the third.
Meanwhile, Dan Evans, who had experienced defeat in eight of his last nine matches prior to arriving in Washington, secured his second consecutive victory by defeating Russia’s Alexander Shevchenko with a 6-4, 6-3 outcome.
Due to rain, Evans will need to contest his quarter-final match later in the day, as both his and Murray’s matches were canceled on Thursday.
The Ghana AIDS Commission is actively seeking additional funding to enhance its endeavors in conducting amplified campaigns, advocacy efforts, and public education initiatives aimed at diminishing the incidence of new HIV infections across the nation.
Director-General of the Commission, Dr. Kyeremeh Atuahene, emphasized the organization’s duty to launch precisely targeted communication strategies, particularly at the grassroots level, to impart comprehensive awareness.
He conveyed the Commission’s intention to propagate its campaigns through diverse channels, placing an emphasis on traditional media platforms. However, he acknowledged that the associated costs have escalated to an impracticable extent.
Dr. Atuahene revealed that the Commission currently possesses outstanding debts to multiple media outlets for their participation in running advertising campaigns. This situation has led to a scenario where the Commission faces challenges in settling these financial commitments.
“We engage in advertising across different platforms, including Multimedia, Media General, Omni Media, and others. Unfortunately, we find ourselves in a position where we cannot honor our financial commitments, and we owe them substantial amounts of money,” Mr. Atuahene revealed.
He underscored the imperative need for increased resources to proficiently execute their campaigns and communication strategies.
While recognizing the Commission’s adeptness in generating ideas, he emphasized that funding is pivotal to actualize these endeavors. He clarified that the purpose behind raising these concerns was to elucidate the obstacles they confront, rather than solely seeking financial assistance.
“We are not merely seeking money, but rather, we are identifying the obstacles we encounter as a Commission. We share this information in the hope that individuals with a positive outlook will extend a helping hand. Those who overlook these issues or deny their seriousness will eventually realize the truth,” he explained.
Dr. Atuahene underscored that Ghana possesses the necessary tools to combat HIV/AIDS effectively, but it’s imperative to secure the resources required to implement the mechanisms that will support these efforts.
A faculty member holding the position of Associate Professor at the University of Ghana School of Law has expressed the belief that unless corruption-related practices and inadequate governance are addressed, West Africa could witness more instances of coups.
Prof. Kwadwo Appiagyei-Atua underscored that the region must acknowledge that coup d’états signify not merely unconstitutional endeavors to alter the government, but rather the outcomes of unconstitutional shifts initiated by the ruling authority.
He elaborated that African leaders and incumbent administrations must recognize the existing issues within their governance, encompassing concerns such as corruption and deficient governance.
“More coups may come if we don’t sit up and realise that unconstitutional change in government is not just about coming to power through unconstitutional means but trying to stay in power and trying to foment divisional interest in order to maintain power and rely on corrupt governance to stay in power.”
During an appearance on JoyNews’ Newsfile program on Saturday, the professor outlined certain factors that could contribute to the formulation of coup plots. He highlighted that a situation where a government clings to power despite losing an election could also serve as a catalyst for a coup to take place.
“The other is where a government decides to change the constitution in order to stay in power beyond the normal two-term time limit,” he stated.
In light of this, Prof. Appiagyei-Atua emphasized that the prevailing landscape is evolving, underscoring that the assurance of democracy cannot be guaranteed.
He further stated that there is a potential for additional coup d’état instances to arise if West African leaders hastily intervene to depose the junta in Niger and reinstate democracy.
“Now in Niger, the West has come to realise that if we say that we’re just abandoning Niger, then we’re allowing Wagner (group in Niger) to come in and take over.
“US has spent a lot of money in terms of security in Niger and so they want to protect that interest. China is also in Niger and they have their interest to protect so the geopolitics is thickening very fast, especially in West Africa. We need to therefore be very careful about how we tackle this issue and not make a rush decision and say that we are going to Niger to overthrow the government and restore democracy, it is easier said than done,” he said.
He, however, suggested that the West African leaders should adopt a more pragmatic approach that can resolve the coup in Niger and the ones which may come up.

The Chamber of Corporate Trustees of Ghana has granted its members the authorization to partake in the alternative debt exchange initiative for pension schemes.
This decision follows the Ministry of Finance’s declaration concerning the restructuring of ¢31 billion pension funds within the upcoming installment of its Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP).
The ministry’s statement indicated that this undertaking would impact E.S.L.A. Plc and Daakye Trust Plc.
In a communication released on August 4, the Chamber noted its collaborative efforts with Organised Labour in furnishing technical guidance. This cooperation ultimately led to the current agreement, enabling Pension Fund Schemes to engage in the proposed offer.
“Board of Trustees of pension funds should independently assess the alternative offer from the MoF and participate in the exchange as they deem fit,” the statement added.
Again, the Chamber said “to ensure the decision making is inclusive, we further recommend that pension funds convene emergency meetings of their Boards of Trustees to take appropriate decisions.”
The Ministry of Finance has disclosed plans to restructure ¢31 billion in pension funds as part of the upcoming iteration of its Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP). This initiative is set to impact E.S.L.A. Plc and Daakye Trust Plc.
Included in this restructuring are debts within the energy sector, encompassing outstanding dues to independent power producers (IPPs) and cocoa-related liabilities.
“This Invitation is intended to enable the Pension Funds to preserve their patrimonial value while exchanging their Eligible Bonds for Bonds that offer more potential liquidity” a statement issued by the Public Relations Unit said.
The Ministry further clarified that those who hold Eligible Bonds and choose to submit them in response to the invitation will be granted Exchange Bonds issued by the Government. The terms and stipulations outlined in the Exchange Memorandum will govern this process.
Additionally, it was emphasized that any offers from Eligible Holders to exchange their Eligible Bonds are irreversible, with the exception of specific circumstances that allow for withdrawal rights under limited conditions.
The statement explained that by “tendering their Eligible Bonds, Eligible Holders represent and warrant that such Eligible Bonds constitute all the Eligible Bonds owned by them and consent to the blocking by the Central Securities Depository (CSD) of any attempt to transfer them prior to the Settlement Date (as defined below) or the termination of the Invitation by the Republic”.
Stranded onion vendors at the Benin border are urgently appealing for President Akufo-Addo‘s intervention to facilitate the border’s reopening, allowing them entry into Ghana.
In response to the recent coup in Niger, the Benin border has been closed, leaving these onion traders, who arrived with approximately 15 trucks, in a state of uncertainty at the border.
The concerned group of onion sellers is alarmed by the possibility of their onion cargo spoiling if swift action is not taken. They are urging President Akufo-Addo to engage with authorities at the Benin border to resolve the situation.
During an interview on Eyewitness News, the spokesperson for the onion sellers association, Yakubu Akpeneda said, “We have loaded onions from Niger, and they have parked at the Benin border, they are now in Benin, but the border has been locked. They said they locked the border because of the Niger coup. On August 2, they promised to open the border at midnight, but we didn’t hear anything.”
“We are calling on the authorities to intervene in the matter, else the onions will rot if they keep long on the road. The authorities should help us by talking to authorities in Benin to open the border for us to bring our onions to Ghana. Our trucks are plenty, the trucks are more than 15. And they are all carrying onions”.
He indicated that the situation will affect the prices of onions in the various markets.
“The situation will have an impact on prices of onions in the various markets”.
Chelsea Football Club has finalized the acquisition of goalkeeper Robert Sanchez from Brighton & Hove Albion.
The Spanish international, boasting 87 Premier League appearances, has officially penned a seven-year deal at Stamford Bridge. He is set to imminently integrate into the first-team roster at Cobham.
Co-sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart said: ‘We’re very pleased to welcome Robert to Chelsea and he adds further quality to our goalkeeping unit.
‘Robert has repeatedly proved himself in the Premier League and been capped by his country. We are excited to watch him work with Mauricio and his coaching team during the season ahead.’
Sanchez embarked on his journey from his native country to join Brighton at the tender age of 15, progressing through the club’s youth system. Notably, he experienced fruitful loan stints at Forest Green Rovers and Rochdale before cementing his status as Brighton’s primary goalkeeper during the 2020/21 season.
At 25 years old, Sanchez swiftly garnered acclaim in the Premier League, gaining recognition for his adept shot-stopping abilities and his proficiency in orchestrating possession and initiating attacks.
Throughout the 2021/22 season, which marked his inaugural full term as Brighton’s top-choice goalkeeper, Sanchez’s performances contributed to the team achieving a club-record of 11 clean sheets in a single Premier League campaign.
During that same season, he earned his inaugural cap for the Spanish national team, featuring in a 4-0 victory over Georgia in a World Cup qualifying match. Notably, he secured spots in the rosters for both Euro 2020 and the 2022 World Cup.
In the preceding season, Sanchez played an instrumental role in guiding Brighton to the semi-finals of the FA Cup. His commendable efforts led to clean sheets in the quarter-finals and the semi-finals, although the latter concluded in a penalty shootout loss to Manchester United. This match marked his 91st and final appearance for Brighton.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Dr. Benjamin Kwasi Agordzo, asserts that instead of charging him with treason, the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) should be acknowledging his actions.
He claims that his financial contribution to support Take Action Ghana (TAG) was directed towards medical outreach programs, despite being accused of aiding an alleged plot to overthrow the government.
During his testimony at the ongoing high treason trial involving nine individuals, ACP Agordzo stated that he and others donated funds for TAG’s medical outreach initiatives. He questioned the selective nature of his arrest when other personalities involved were not apprehended.
He contested allegations that he drafted a speech for a post-coup scenario, stating that his advice regarding peaceful demonstrations and securing police permits was unrelated to any criminal activity.
With nearly 36 years of experience in the Ghana Police Service, ACP Agordzo served as Director of Operations and Director of Transformation from 2015 to 2018. He engaged with think tanks, research organizations, and media outlets on topics including election security and political vigilantes.
He recounted receiving a WhatsApp message from the now-deceased Dr. Frederick Mac Palm on November 8, 2018, during his United Nations Pre-Deployment Training Course in Uganda. The message referred to his lecture at the Institute of Democratic Governance and discussed Take Action Ghana (TAG), an NGO headed by Mac Palm. The message inquired about ACP Agordzo’s interest in joining TAG.
The term “big bang” was brought up in their conversation, which ACP Agordzo explained was misunderstood and taken out of context by the prosecution. He clarified that he used the term to refer to forming various sub-groups within TAG, not as a reference to any coup attempt.
In light of these circumstances, ACP Agordzo criticized the NIB for erroneously interpreting his words and attributing them to an alleged coup attempt, when they were actually related to benign organizational activities.

Manchester City is pleased to announce the acquisition of Josko Gvardiol from RB Leipzig, solidifying a five-year contract.
Gvardiol, aged 21, marks the second addition to the squad during this summer’s transfer window, gearing up for the upcoming 2023/24 season. His signing follows that of fellow Croatian international Mateo Kovacic.
Similar to Kovacic’s trajectory, Gvardiol embarked on his professional journey at Dinamo Zagreb, renowned for fostering some of Croatia’s most accomplished talents.
In his tenure of two seasons within his home country, Gvardiol secured two Croatian League championships, one Croatian Cup, and a Croatian Super Cup before transitioning to RB Leipzig in Germany.
Having participated in 87 matches for the Red Bulls throughout the 2021/22 and 2022/23 seasons, Gvardiol notably contributed five goals and celebrated victory in securing two DFB-Pokal trophies.
Furthermore, Gvardiol’s impressive record extends to the international stage, as he has earned 21 caps representing Croatia. Notably, his performance played a pivotal role in Croatia’s commendable third-place finish in the 2022 World Cup finals held in Qatar.
Expressing his enthusiasm, Gvardiol shared his excitement about joining the Premier League. He eagerly anticipates commencing his journey under the guidance of Manchester City’s new manager, Pep Guardiola.
“I have always dreamed of one day playing in England and to be doing so now with Manchester City – after the season they have just had – is a real honour for me.
“Anyone who saw Manchester City play last season knows they are the best team in the world. To win the Treble says everything you need to know about the quality this team has.
“To be joining City is something very special for me and my family.
“To have the chance to work with Pep Guardiola, too, will be amazing. I know I am not yet the finished article and I am sure my game will progress under the best coach in football.
“To be linking up with Mateo Kovacic will also be special. He’s a top footballer and I hope we can both help City achieve another successful season in 2023/24 and then beyond.”

“He is a player we have watched closely, and we feel he has a superb set of attributes.
“Top clubs all over Europe have been monitoring him, so to bring him here is great news for us.
“Josko has so many qualities – everything you want in a centre-half. He is fast, competitive, combative, strong in the air, impressive in possession of the ball, with strong self-belief and a good character. He is left-footed, too, which offers us good options at the back.
“He is still young but his progress in the game has been rapid. We feel confident his upward trajectory will continue here at City working with Pep and his staff.”
Recent developments reveal that the lifeless remains of the daughter of Bekwai’s Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hon Kwaku Kyei Baffour, was discovered behind their residence in Atwima Bebu, situated within the Ashanti Region.
Upon the arrival of the police at the scene, it was observed that both the communal spaces and private bedrooms had been subjected to a search. Notably, a television set was reported missing. Despite the absence of indications of forced entry, the investigation remains underway.
In an official statement issued by the Ghana Police Service and obtained by MyNewsGh.com, it was detailed that an inquiry into the circumstances encircling the demise of Akua Serwaa Kyei, an adult female, was initiated on August 3, 2023, in Atwima Bebu within the Ashanti Region.
The spouse of the deceased conveyed that upon returning home around 5:30 pm on August 3, 2023, he encountered his wife lying unconscious behind their residence.
Swiftly transporting her to a medical facility, her arrival at the hospital was accompanied by the pronouncement of her demise. Furthermore, the spouse asserted that their living quarters and sleeping area had been subjected to intrusion, with a television set being among the items missing.
Initial observations undertaken by the Police Crime Scene unit divulged that no points of entry, such as doors or windows, exhibited signs of forced access. Furthermore, during the medical examination of the deceased’s body, no evident signs of physical violence or gunshot injuries were discerned.
As the investigation persists, the deceased’s body has been conveyed to a mortuary for preservation, awaiting an autopsy. In collaboration with the bereaved family, the police have initiated consultations to unearth the truth and ensure the culpable parties are held accountable.
To provide support during this arduous period, the Inspector-General of Police communicated with the family through a telephonic conversation, pledging a thorough inquiry into the matter. Additionally, a Police clinical psychologist has been appointed to extend assistance to the family in navigating these challenging times.
Morocco secured a spot in the World Cup last 16, joining Colombia, following a 1-0 victory in Perth. Anissa Lahmari’s late first-half goal proved decisive in sealing Morocco’s progression.
During the initial period, Morocco dominated proceedings, and their persistence paid off when Lahmari tapped in after Catalina Perez saved Ghizlane Chebbak’s initial penalty kick.
In the second half, Colombia mounted attempts to level the score on several occasions. However, goalkeeper Khadija Er-Rmichi emerged as the standout performer, safeguarding Morocco’s lead. This achievement saw tournament debutants Morocco advance to the knockout stages, at the expense of two-time winners Germany.
Morocco’s pathway to advancement necessitated a victory while hoping Germany would not triumph over South Korea, which indeed transpired as the latter match ended in a 1-1 draw, ultimately favoring Morocco’s progression.
Morocco nearly took the lead within the first moments of the game when Ibtissam Jraidi unleashed a shot from a narrow angle, but Perez deflected it for a corner.
In the closing moments of the first half, Morocco was awarded a penalty after Jraidi was fouled by Daniela Arias in the box. Chebbak took the penalty kick, aiming for the bottom corner, but Perez thwarted it. Following a misdirected attempt at goal from the rebound, Lahmari capitalized on the loose ball to find the net.
Around the 60-minute mark, Colombia presented their first significant chance. Daniela Montoya delivered a close-range shot at Er-Rmichi, with Lorena Bedoya’s subsequent effort slightly missing the target.
Building pressure, the South American side came close to equalizing once more. Mayra Ramirez’s powerful shot was deflected wide by Er-Rmichi.
Continuing their offensive, Colombia was close to scoring again, with Linda Caicedo receiving an opportunity. However, her shot was tipped over the bar, and Ramirez’s attempt was denied by the post.
In stoppage time, Morocco had an opportunity to extend their lead to 2-0, but Rosella Ayane’s shot from inside the area was directed straight at Perez.

In Ghana, a group of nurses is voicing their discontent over unfavorable working conditions and inadequate salaries, among other concerns. One Ghanaian nurse, having relocated to the United Kingdom (UK), shared her remarkable transformation after opting to work within the UK’s National Health Service.
During an appearance on the Citi Breakfast show on August 3, 2023, this Ghanaian nurse, now based in the UK, revealed that the combination of meager wages and other factors heavily influenced her decision to exchange Ghana’s healthcare system for that of the UK.
She explained that since her move to the United Kingdom, her income has substantially increased, even after accounting for tax deductions. Nurses in the UK are compensated based on the shifts they work, resulting in earnings determined by the hours they dedicate to their roles.
Elaborating further, she stated, “Payment is tied to shifts. Even if your hourly wage is 15 pounds, working a 12-hour shift four times a week multiplies your earnings. If my monthly income amounts to 2800 pounds, after deducting around 500 pounds for taxes and rent, I can still save approximately 800 pounds.”
Encouraging Ghanaian nurses aspiring to practice abroad, she emphasized that such a move could lead to higher earnings compared to working in Ghana.
Meanwhile, a growing number of Ghanaian nurses and trained healthcare professionals are securing visas to work overseas, a trend they attribute to unfavorable working conditions in their home country. According to a report by the BBC, as many as 1,200 nurses departed Ghana to join the UK workforce in 2022.
Consequently, Ghana’s healthcare system is grappling with significant shortages of medical professionals, placing immense strain on hospitals across the nation. Coupled with soaring inflation, the country’s economy is facing considerable challenges, resulting in a higher cost of living.
In essence, the narrative showcases the allure of better opportunities abroad for Ghanaian nurses, stemming from their dissatisfaction with local conditions and echoing the strain this has placed on Ghana’s healthcare system and economy.
Travis Scott has successfully held off competition from Anne-Marie, securing his inaugural UK number one album with his digital-only release, “Utopia.”
Continuing their chart reign, fellow rappers Dave and Central Cee maintained their position atop the singles chart, achieving the longest-standing UK rap number one with “Sprinter.”
Following the recent passing of Sinéad O’Connor, her iconic hit “Nothing Compares 2 U” re-entered the top 40 on Friday, marking its first appearance since 1990.
Lizzo’s track “Pink” soared 12 spots to position 27, even as allegations of misconduct swirled around her.
The singer, whose song is featured on the soundtrack of the Barbie movie, faces legal action from three former dancers who accuse her of sexual harassment and creating an unfavorable work environment—charges she refutes.
Sinéad O’Connor’s renowned cover of a Prince song experienced a significant ascent, climbing 15 positions to reach the 30th rank.
Similar to Lizzo, Travis Scott, aged 32, hails from Houston. His debut at the top of the UK album chart not only marked his first number one album in the UK but also recorded the highest streaming figures for an album this year.
While Anne-Marie’s album “Unhealthy” narrowly missed the top spot, it still secured the title of the fastest-selling album of the year by a solo UK female artist.
Travis Scott’s album launch coincided with his announcement that his postponed performance in front of Egypt’s pyramids will eventually take place.
The originally planned desert concert, sold out in advance, was canceled at the last moment due to “complex production issues,” according to organizers.
His recently released concept album features several notable singles, such as “K-pop” with Bad Bunny and The Weeknd, alongside “Delresto (Echoes)” and “Meltdown,” which made its debut at number 10 on the charts this week. Additionally, two more tracks from “Utopia,” namely “FE!N” featuring Playboi Carti and “HYAENA,” also secured positions on the charts on Friday.
The album’s launch last week coincided with the unveiling of a complementary film titled “Circus Maximus.”
Interestingly, Scott is now slated to perform at the Roman chariot-racing stadium with the same name next week, substituting for the initially planned Pyramids of Giza concert.
The Central Regional Police Command has initiated an investigation into the alleged participation of a 14-year-old boy in a robbery incident that resulted in him suffering significant machete wounds.
The suspect was apprehended while undergoing medical treatment at the 37 Military Hospital located in Accra.
The events unfolded in Potsin, within the Gomoa East District of the Central Region, causing apprehension among residents.
The victim, identified as Philip Dadzie, a second-year junior high school student, was discovered in a wooded area, drenched in blood, on July 26, 2023. He had sustained severe machete injuries across various parts of his body.
Initial reports indicated that he had been assaulted by unidentified attackers who had sought directions from him while he was on an early morning jog along the Potsin Dominase stretch.
The public responded with sympathy, prompting even community members abroad to contribute funds to support his medical expenses.
However, recent revelations have astonished the community. It has now been revealed that the teenager incurred the machete wounds as a consequence of an altercation with security personnel at the Dominase Onion Market, where he attempted theft.
According to reliable sources from Citi News, on the day in question, the suspect visited the market in the company of four older individuals aged between 25 and 30.
As per reports, upon being confronted by a market security guard, the suspect brandished a knife in an attempt to attack the guard. In response, the guard defended himself by inflicting multiple machete strikes on the suspect.
Subsequently, the injured suspect managed to flee the scene and was later rescued by his companions. They left him on the fringes of the Potsin township and coerced him to provide a misleading account of the incident.
After media coverage of the matter, the market’s security personnel approached the Potsin police station, where they disclosed the accurate sequence of events.
Upon police interrogation, the suspect conceded his involvement in the attempted theft at the market. Following treatment at the 37 Military Hospital in Accra, he was released and is presently cooperating with the police inquiry. Simultaneously, law enforcement is pursuing the remaining suspects involved in the case.
Spain secured their spot in the World Cup quarter-finals in a dominant manner, overpowering Switzerland with a resounding 5-1 victory in Auckland.
Jorge Vilda’s team rebounded with vigor from their previous 4-0 defeat by Japan in the group stage. Their first-half onslaught proved decisive, with Aitana Bonmati netting twice, alongside strikes from Alba Redondo and Laia Codina (who also inadvertently scored an own goal). Spain’s firm control at halftime ensured their progress.
While Spain scaled down their intensity in the second half, they maintained their dominance on the pitch. Jenny Hermoso contributed the fifth goal, setting up a quarter-final confrontation against either the Netherlands or South Africa.
Switzerland, who had yet to concede in the tournament, had their streak shattered within the first five minutes. Alba Redondo’s initial shot was thwarted by Gaelle Thalmann, only for Redondo to capitalize on the rebound and pass it to Bonmati, who expertly finished from within the box.
Switzerland briefly equalized after six minutes, as Laia Codina mistakenly directed a heavy back pass beyond Cata Coll in the Spanish goal.
Nevertheless, Spain swiftly regained control. Within six minutes, Ona Battle’s cross was deftly redirected by Bonmati, leading to Redondo using her head to put Spain back in the lead.
Spain, determined to distance themselves from the Japan loss, continued to press forward. Bonmati almost extended their lead, but her powerful volley from outside the box was parried away by Thalmann.
Spain’s relentless attack overwhelmed Switzerland, culminating in their third goal in the 36th minute. Redondo supplied the ball to Bonmati, who adeptly maneuvered past two defenders before securing her second goal of the match.
Codina redeemed herself just before halftime by capitalizing on a corner kick scramble, slotting the ball home from close range amidst defensive confusion.
Switzerland made alterations during halftime, but even substitute Meriame Terchoun’s close-range volley was effortlessly caught by Coll.
With 20 minutes left, Spain solidified their lead with a fifth goal. Switzerland’s defensive error was exploited by Hermoso, who raced forward and elegantly curled the ball into the far corner.
Spain nearly added a sixth goal, but Eva Navarro’s long-range attempt was thwarted by Thallmann. This victory marked Spain’s inaugural entrance into the tournament’s quarter-finals.
Russian authorities have reported that a Russian tanker carrying 11 crew members suffered damage in an attack within the Black Sea, allegedly carried out by Ukrainian forces.
The incident, which occurred in the Kerch Strait, resulted in damage to the vessel’s engine room during an overnight strike. Fortunately, no injuries were reported among the crew.
While Ukraine has not made a public statement regarding the incident, a source from the Ukrainian security service informed the BBC that a sea drone was utilized in the attack.
This marks the second consecutive day featuring an assault involving similar weaponry. However, Russia has not confirmed any destruction resulting from the previous day’s attack.
Sea drones, also known as naval drones, are unmanned, compact vessels designed to operate either on or beneath the water’s surface.
The Kerch Strait serves as the link between the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov, effectively dividing Crimea – a peninsula seized by Moscow in 2014 – and Russia’s Taman peninsula.
Ukraine’s SBU security service revealed that the operation on Saturday was conducted in collaboration with the Ukrainian navy, involving the use of 450kg of TNT explosive. Notably, the targeted tanker was laden with fuel, causing the resulting explosion to be visible from a considerable distance.
As per Russia’s maritime transport agency, the Sig tanker was positioned 17 miles (27km) south of the Crimean Bridge at the time of the attack.
An official from Russia’s regional Marine Rescue Co-ordination Centre (MRCC) reported to the state-run Tass news agency that two tugboats had already arrived at the scene of the assault, situated just south of the Kerch Strait.
“The engine room was damaged. Not much, but it was damaged,” the official said.
Russia’s maritime transport agency RosMorRechFlot later said the vessel had a hole “in the area of [the] engine room near the waterline from the starboard side, presumably as a result of an attack by a sea drone”.
“The ship is afloat,” it added.
Reports from Russian state-run media indicate that the Crimean Bridge’s lights, located to the north, were deactivated and traffic was halted due to warnings of an impending attack.
On Friday, Ukrainian security sources informed the BBC that a Ukrainian naval drone had executed a substantial strike on a Russian naval vessel near the Black Sea port of Novorossiysk. Allegedly, footage emerged depicting the drone hitting the Olenegorsky Gornyak large landing ship. Another video, yet to be verified, displayed a prominently tilting vessel being towed to port.
In contrast, Russia’s defense ministry asserted that it had successfully thwarted a Ukrainian attack on its naval base in Novorossiysk, involving two sea drones, without acknowledging any resulting damage.
Situated southeast of the Kerch Strait, Novorossiysk stands as a significant conduit for Russian exports.
Recent weeks have witnessed escalated clashes at sea, coinciding with Russia’s abandonment of a pivotal UN agreement that ensured secure grain exports across the Black Sea.
Russian drones and missiles have targeted Ukrainian ports, prompting Kyiv to issue threats of retaliation.
In a distinct development, Saudi Arabia is scheduled to convene talks aimed at resolving the Ukrainian conflict later on Saturday. Invitations have been dispatched to approximately 30 nations, excluding Russia, for the meeting to be held in the Red Sea city of Jeddah.
Russian President Vladimir Putin initiated a comprehensive invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
An investigation has been initiated by the Police to uncover the circumstances surrounding the demise of Akua Serwaa Kyei, the daughter of Kweku Kyei-Baffuor, Bekwai, Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), on August 3rd, 2023, in Atwima Bebu, situated within the Ashanti Region.
As narrated by the husband of the deceased, he arrived home around 5:30 pm on August 3rd, 2023, only to discover his wife lying unconscious at the rear of their residence. He promptly transported her to the hospital, but sadly, she was declared deceased upon arrival.
The husband also claimed that their living room and bedroom had been thoroughly searched and a television set had been stolen.
During the preliminary evaluation of the scene by the Police Crime Scene unit, it was ascertained that no windows or doors of the residence had been forcibly accessed.
Furthermore, a medical assessment of the deceased’s body at the hospital did not reveal any signs of physical violence or gunshot wounds.
The body has been taken to the morgue for preservation and will undergo an autopsy as the investigation progresses.
The Police have made contact with the deceased’s family and are collaborating closely with them to uncover the truth and ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice.
The Inspector-General of Police personally reached out to the family via telephone, offering assurance of a comprehensive inquiry into the matter.
In this challenging period, a Police clinical psychologist has been designated to support the family through their difficulties.
The continuous efforts of Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Godfred Dame, have prevented Ghana from being hit by numerous judgement debts.
His reputation has recently been questioned by Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa who says the Attorney-General is assisting senior New Patriotic Party (NPP) member, Gabby Otchere-Darko to exert influence on Ministry of Finance officials to release GHS 187.3 million to one of his clients, West Blue Company Limited.
In his August 1st edition of the Good Evening Ghana show, broadcast journalist, Paul Adom-Otchere denied Mr Ablakwa’s claims.
According to Mr Adom-Otchere, the Attorney-General cannot be considered to be “bad” as he is “resolving the problem.”
He noted that the works of the Attorney-General show he is a man of integrity. The journalist noted that Ghana has saved millions of cedis and dollars due to the efforts of Godfred Dame.
Mr Paul Adom-Otchere listed some major cases won by the Attorney-General.
NDK’s GH¢1.2bn judgement debt
In June 2021, a legal intervention by the Attorney-General (A-G) prevented the state from being liable for a judgment debt of over GH¢1.2 billion, which was being pursued by NDK Financial Services.
NDK Financial Services had initiated legal proceedings to compel the government to pay them GH¢1.273 billion, claiming it as an outstanding balance along with accrued interest on a judgment debt.
However, following the A-G’s challenge to the legitimacy of these claims, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of the state, awarding NDK Financial Services only GH¢14,699.74 with applicable interest.
The dispute in question pertained to a credit facility granted by NDK between 2005 and 2008 to Ahaman Enterprises Limited. The credit was meant for the installation of electrical poles and related materials on behalf of the Ministry of Energy.
Cassius Mining Limited vs Ghana
On August 1, 2023, the Accra High Court granted an injunction against Cassius Mining Limited, an Australian-owned mining company. The injunction was issued following an application by the Attorney-General (A-G) and Minister of Justice, Mr. Godfred Yeboah Dame, at the Commercial Division of the High Court in Accra on July 12.
In the application, the A-G requested an order of interim injunction against the mining company. The purpose of the injunction, as requested by the A-G, is to prevent Cassius Mining Limited from initiating or pursuing any arbitration proceedings outside the jurisdiction of Ghana.
This pertains specifically to the Prospecting Licence Agreement dated December 28, 2016, which was entered into between the Government of Ghana and Cassius Mining Limited. The injunction was granted by Justice Akua Sarpomaa Amoah, who presided over the case.
Earlier this year, the company had initiated an international arbitration against the Government of Ghana at the Permanent Court of Arbitration, seeking approximately US$300 million in compensation. However, this arbitration process was halted by the court due to objections raised by the Attorney-General.
Following the suspension of the arbitration at the Permanent Court of Arbitration, the company had opted for other international arbitration forums to pursue its case against the Government of Ghana.
According to the Attorney-General, on October 12, 2016, Cassius Mining Limited had applied for a prospecting license from the Government of Ghana. This license covered an area of 13.791 square kilometers in the Gbane/Datoko region of Talensi, located in the Upper East Region of Ghana.
Beijing Everyway Traffic & Lighting Technical Company Limited vs Ghana
On February 1, 2023, the Permanent Court of Arbitration rendered a final award on January 30, 2023, in a case involving an investor-state arbitration brought forward by Beijing Everyway Traffic & Lighting Technical Company Limited against the government of Ghana.
The tribunal ruled in favor of a preliminary objection raised by the Attorney-General, Godfred Yeboah Dame, who represented Ghana in the case.
The Claimant had initiated the arbitration based on the provisions of the Treaty between China and Ghana Concerning the Encouragement and Reciprocal Protection of Investments, which was concluded on October 12, 1989.
In its claim, the company sought damages totaling “not less than $55 million.”
Background
On December 16, 2011, Ghana entered into a Master Facility Agreement and related Finance Documents with the China Development Bank to secure a term loan facility for the development of 12 infrastructure projects, including the AITMS Project, in the country.
The AITMS Project was awarded to the Claimant, Beijing Everyway Traffic & Lighting Technical Company Limited, around April 2012. Following this, on September 17, 2012, the Claimant and the Ministry of Roads and Highways of Ghana entered into the EPIC Contract.
Under the terms of the EPIC Contract, Beijing Everyway agreed to supply equipment and offer technical services to the Ghanaian Ministry in relation to the AITMS Project in Accra. The Contract Price was set at US$100 million, and an initial payment of 30% was agreed upon.
Parliament of Ghana approved the EPIC Contract on December 22, 2018. The project’s commencement was set for August 26, 2019, with a completion timeframe of 24 months.
The Claimant asserted that between November 12 and 15, 2019, a delegation from the Ministry of Roads and Highways of Ghana visited their facilities in China to inspect equipment for the AITMS Project. In January 2020, the Department of Urban Roads of Ghana confirmed that the equipment could be shipped to Ghana. Additionally, the Department issued an onsite work permit for the project in January 2020, and the first installations for the project were initiated in February 2020.
During the project’s progress, the Claimant issued two Interim Payment Certificates totaling US$21,995,728 for completed work. By the time of the Notice of Arbitration in February 2021, the Claimant maintained that works with a contractual value of at least US$21,995,728 had been accomplished.
However, a series of events unfolded. In March 2020, the Minister of Finance of Ghana called for discussions regarding the AITMS Project. Subsequent meetings involving various Ghanaian officials led to decisions about the project’s supervision and responsibilities. Notably, the Parliament of Ghana rescinded approval of the EPIC Contract on November 19, 2020, leading to the Claimant’s termination notice on December 30, 2021.
The Claimant alleged that Ghana’s actions constituted a breach of the China-Ghana Investment Treaty, including unlawfully expropriating the Claimant’s investment and violating the Umbrella Clause.
Ghana contended that its actions were in the interest of national security and that the Tribunal lacked jurisdiction over the Claimant’s claims. The dispute centered around differing interpretations of the Treaty and the legality of Ghana’s actions within that context.
$15.3m Heritage Imperial ‘galamsey’ judgment against State
The High Court in Kumasi on May 2, 2023, overturned a $15.3 million judgment that was previously ruled in favor of Heritage Imperial, a mining company.
The Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame, initiated the application to nullify the judgment, asserting that the high court lacked jurisdiction to address the case.
In 2018, Heritage Imperial took legal action against the Ghanaian government due to the intrusion on its mining site in the Ashanti Region and the confiscation of its excavators by the Inter-Ministerial Task Force on Illegal Mining.
Following a comprehensive trial, Justice Samuel Diawuo, presiding over the case, determined on July 30, 2020, that the government’s actions were unlawful. Consequently, the court ordered the government to pay $15,304,714.20, the equivalent value of the machinery and equipment seized, or its present value in Ghanaian Cedis. The court also awarded general damages of GH¢500,000 and imposed costs of GH¢100,000 against the government.
However, when Godfred Yeboah Dame assumed the role of Attorney-General in 2021, he moved to set aside the judgment, arguing that the court lacked jurisdiction to hear the case. He later revealed that he had learned about the judgment through a news program on Joy FM, Newsfile, and hadn’t been aware of it during his tenure as Deputy Attorney-General.
Mr. Dame presented the application at the High Court in Kumasi on July 23, 2021. He highlighted several procedural discrepancies in the plaintiff’s case and contended that the plaintiff’s initiation of the legal action did not adhere to the obligatory statutory provisions of the State Proceedings Act, 1998 (Act 555), rendering it unlawful.
Furthermore, he asserted that the order for the government to pay $15,304,714.20 lacked a valid basis, as there was no endorsement on the writ of summons issued in support of the action.
The Accra Circuit Court, handling the case involving former Black Stars player Prince Tagoe accused of a USD 40,000 fraud, has granted the accused an extension until August 30, 2023, to settle the remaining amount with the complainant, as per the complainant’s request.
If the parties do not reach a settlement out of court, the Court, presided over by Mr. Bright Samuel Acquah, will proceed with the trial.
The case has been adjourned to August 30, 2023.
Background
Prince Tagoe is currently on GH¢100,000 bail with three sureties, one of whom must be a civil servant. He is facing allegations of obtaining USD 40,000 from Mr. George Antwi Boateng, a fellow former footballer, with the promise of providing him with a 4X4 Lexus vehicle.
The court has mandated that one of the sureties must provide proof of ownership of landed property.
Prince Tagoe has denied the charges and has already paid GH¢129,000 out of the USD 40,000 (equivalent to GH¢265,200) he is alleged to have fraudulently obtained.
The prosecution, led by Police Detective Chief Inspector Agartha Abena Asantewaa, previously informed the court that both Tagoe and Boateng were based in Germany, and Tagoe had been under the management of the complainant.
According to the prosecution, in 2020, the two met in Ghana, where Boateng expressed his need for a 4X4 Lexus vehicle.
Tagoe allegedly agreed to import the vehicle for Boateng at a cost of USD 40,000 (equivalent to GH¢265,200).
USD 40,000 was deposited into Tagoe’s bank account on January 8, 2021, with acknowledgment through a phone call.
Tagoe promised to deliver the vehicle by March 30, 2021, but failed to do so.
After multiple delays and excuses, including a claim that he had spent the money on other matters, Tagoe was unable to fulfill the agreement.
The case remains under investigation, and the court has provided an opportunity for resolution between the parties before the set date.
