Kojo Forex sues Bongo Ideas for GHS1m over defamation

Bright Kojo Onipayede, a Ghanaian forex trader widely known as Kojo Forex, has taken legal action against Albert Nathaniel Hyde, also known as Bongo Ideas, for defamation.

Kojo Forex alleges that Bongo Ideas made damaging statements about him on Twitter, which have harmed his reputation.

In the lawsuit, Kojo Forex is seeking compensation of GHS1 million and a permanent injunction to prevent Bongo Ideas from making any further defamatory remarks about him.

Additionally, Kojo Forex insists on a public apology to be issued on social media, accompanied by the retraction of the defamatory tweets.

Back in April of this year, Kojo Forex had issued a stern warning to the blogger after Bongo Ideas went on a Twitter rant directed at him.

Kojo Forex has now resorted to legal recourse to address the alleged defamation, aiming to safeguard his reputation and seek appropriate redress for the harm caused.

Among other things, Bongo had alleged that “Forex trading alone did not get you these things. You do other shady business.”

Again, he claimed that “the FX thingy is just a small part of the secretive online business empire (I will explain later) he runs. His profits from FX, as he makes it seem, do not come because he is a genius in the game. There are oldgees in the game who will tell you that he is a liar.

“You will soon be disappointed that FX is not a get-rich-quick-scheme. Only the Ponzi schemers make it seem so, which he is.”

These allegations were refuted by Kojo Forex, who claimed that the blogger was attacking him because he refused to mentor him.

The social media banter between the two ended with a threat from Kojo Forex to drag Bongo to court to prove the claims made against him, hence the current lawsuit.

Meanwhile, Bongo Ideas is known to troll celebrities on Twitter with the likes of Nana Aba Anamoah, Serwaa Amihere, Asamoah Gyan, Shatta Wale, Fella Makafui, Black Sherif and others constantly getting attacked by him.

LeBron James misses six of his three-pointers in Nuggets game

LeBron James endured a challenging fourth quarter during the LA Lakers’ disappointing defeat to the Denver Nuggets in Game 2 of the Western Conference Finals.

The four-time MVP had a tough time finding his rhythm, missing all six of his three-point attempts, with three of them coming in the crucial final period.

In addition, James struggled with a shot that rebounded off the backboard too forcefully in the closing stages of the game. To compound matters, he faced a defensive setback as Bruce Brown managed to strip him of the ball in the dying seconds.

It was an uncharacteristically difficult performance for LeBron James, highlighting the tough circumstances he faced during the game, contributing to the Lakers’ loss.

Skip Bayless quickly pounced on his poor display with this: “LeBron James: no clutch gene.”

The Fox Sports analyst has been harping on James’ supposedly inability to come up big time. He has often reminded basketball fans that the 19x All-Star is no match to Michael Jordan when it comes to clutch situations.

James, of course, has had several game-winners and buzzer-beaters in his career in the playoffs. He just couldn’t get it done in the fourth quarter in Game 2 against the Denver Nuggets.

“King James,” who is usually deadly within point-blank range missed a layup when the score was 103-99 in favor of Denver. James’ miss led to two free throws for Jamal Murray who extended the Nuggets’ lead to 105-99.

With the Nuggets leading 108-103, the Lakers desperately pushed the ball up court with 12.6 seconds left in the game. James, however, lost the ball to Brown, which sealed the game for Denver and a 2-0 lead in the conference finals.

Police arrest 2 suspects involved in US convoy attack in Nigeria

Two suspects believed to be connected to the attack on a US convoy in Nigeria’s Anambra state have been apprehended, according to local police.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the attack resulted in the tragic deaths of seven individuals. Among the victims were three US consulate officials and four police escorts.

Fortunately, no US citizens lost their lives, although two consulate officials remain missing as they were reportedly abducted by the assailants.

Anambra state’s police commissioner, Echeng Echeng, attributed the attack to alleged members of the Eastern Security Network (ESN), the armed branch of the separatist group known as the Indigenous People of Biafra (Ipob).

However, Mr. Echeng did not provide evidence to support this claim regarding the separatists’ involvement.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken denounced the attack and revealed that it targeted an advance team from a US mission visiting a flood response project funded by the United States in the southeastern Nigerian state.

President Muhammadu Buhari of Nigeria also condemned the attack and reaffirmed his government’s commitment to ensuring the safety of its citizens.

He vowed that those responsible for the assault would face appropriate punishment.

Over 4,000 prisoners in Zimbabwe pardoned to decongest jails

In an effort to alleviate the issue of overcrowded prisons in Zimbabwe, the country has implemented a presidential amnesty order resulting in the release of approximately one-fifth of all prisoners.

The Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service (ZPCS) disclosed that over 4,000 inmates, predominantly men, were granted their freedom in what was described as a commendable gesture.

However, it is important to note that the amnesty excluded individuals convicted of violent crimes, robbery, treason, and public order offenses.

The prisons in Zimbabwe have been grappling with severe overcrowding, making this initiative a necessary step towards addressing the problem.

This action has been taken in anticipation of general elections scheduled for August. President Emmerson Mnangagwa is currently facing numerous challenges including a high cost of living, inflation, and power cuts.

The release of prisoners serves as part of the government’s broader efforts to tackle these issues and promote stability within the country.

Ramsdale signs new long-term deal with Arsenal

Arsenal’s goalkeeper, Aaron Ramsdale, has committed his future to the club by signing a lucrative long-term contract extension.

The 24-year-old England international, who joined the Gunners from Sheffield United in August 2021, has already made an impressive 76 appearances for the team.

Despite having two years left on his existing contract, Ramsdale’s outstanding performances throughout the season under manager Mikel Arteta have earned him a new deal with Arsenal, solidifying his position as the team’s number one goalkeeper.

Ramsdale said: “It’s a huge amount of pride, it’s something you work for.

“It doesn’t matter if you’ve been at the club for a month or for four years, you always want to get the next [contract] and push on with the team.

“To get it after two years, I’m buzzing. It just means I can concentrate and keep my head down and hopefully after a few more years I’ll get another one and carry on living the dream at the football club.

“As soon as you put that Arsenal shirt on, they [fans] will give you every chance to try and perform. I knew I could win them over at some point — and thankfully I did that quite early really.”

Arteta added: “We’re all so happy that Aaron has signed a new contract.

“The way Aaron has developed over the past two years has been exceptional, with his performances, contribution and overall adaptation to the club.

“It’s great that we’re continuing to build our future with our biggest talents in our young squad. We’re all looking forward to enjoying many more years of Aaron the player and the person at the football club.”

In 36 Premier League appearances for the North Londoners this term, Ramsdale has kept 13 clean sheets — only David de Gea (16) and Alisson (14) have recorded more.

His performances at the Emirates have earned the former Bournemouth stopper three caps for the Three Lions, keeping clean sheets against San Marino and Italy.

  • How Kevin Prince Boateng and his brother set a new world record

How Kevin Prince Boateng and his brother set a new world record

There is a hysteria for doing something unthinkable or highly improbable to be recognised since a Nigerian chef, Hilda Baci, documented her attempt to break a world record.

Ghanaians and Nigerians especially, have supported Baci’s efforts to break the current record of 87 hours and 45 minutes set in Rewa, central India in 2019 by Indian chef Lata Tondon.

Though her efforts are being verified by the Guinness World Records, both countries have extolled her with Ghanaians surprisingly claiming Baci to be Ghanaian.

Ghana and Nigeria have battled to take the most impressive African country title.

It may seem like Nigeria might have the upper hand with Baci’s Guinness World Records. But Ghana can already boast of being directly involved in a world record.

On June 23, 2010, during the FIFA World Cup held in Johannesburg, South Africa, a historic moment occurred as Kevin-Prince Boateng of Ghana and Jerome Boateng of Germany became the first brothers to face each other in a World Cup match.

Born to a Ghanaian father but raised by different mothers in Berlin, the brothers had spent considerable time together during their childhood.

However, they made distinct decisions regarding their national allegiances in their professional careers. Kevin-Prince Boateng represented Ghana, while Jerome Boateng opted to play for Germany.

The match between Ghana and Germany provided a unique and memorable opportunity for the two brothers to compete against each other on the world stage.

Meanwhile, Efya, a renowned Ghanaian singer, is embarking on an extraordinary mission to establish a new world record for the longest song ever created.

“If I can break a record, it will be for the longest song. Sometimes you can do the longest song recorded. I don’t have to be on my feet singing continuously. I could sing for a couple of days; I could hold a note for long. These dirges we have in Ghana are an example, we have 15 minutes of such songs. I could sing for 30 hours if I want to break the record. Hilda recorded 100 hours because she was cooking,” she told media practitioner Abeiku Santana.

TVET Director-General urges Ghanaians to be more generous

To ensure the less privilege in society are well catered for, the Director-General of the Ghana Technical and Vocational Education and Training Service (TVET), Mawusi Nudekor Awity, has made a passionate appeal to Ghanaians to inculcate the habit of giving.

Awity, reflecting on her own achievements, attributed them to the support she has provided to numerous individuals over the years. With a Christian background, she believes that giving is a pathway to receiving more blessings.

During an interview on Joy Prime’s morning show, Awity shared her success journey and highlighted the significance of extending a helping hand to those in need.

“I’m a giver, and if I’ve given you something, you may think I have more, but that’s my last I’ve given to you because I feel that the Lord will touch somebody to give me. So Ghanaians must be a lot more philanthropic. They must learn to touch the lives of the critical matters because there are many people whose lives must be touched,” she suggested.

In the face of potential unappreciation, the social entrepreneur urges individuals who lend a helping hand not to cease their generosity.

Mawusi Awity, sharing her personal journey, revealed that her empathy towards vulnerable individuals stems from her own upbringing. She recounts how her high school education was made possible by the kind support of her Junior High School headmistress.

Despite her father holding a prominent position as a superintendent, she faced difficulties in pursuing her studies in high school due to her father’s lack of support.

Nonetheless, these experiences have fueled her commitment to making a positive impact and encouraging others to extend compassion to those in need.

“… My father said he was never going to allow me to go to secondary school, but he told me to go and learn a trade. I used to write common entrance, but I won’t go to school,” she revealed.

However, she turned the challenge into an opportunity and persevered to further her education.

Asked whether the mother was available or not to help. She said, “My mother left the marriage many years ago.”

Mawusi Awity is the first female director-general of the Ghana Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Service. She was officially appointed by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in 2021.

Due to her contribution to society, she has gained prestigious awards, including the 7th Best Performing CEO in Ghana (2019); MTN 2019 Heroes of Change Award; Leading Innovative Women Honorary Award (2013) by the Global Women Innovative Network, UK, and Government of Ghana; Recognition of Outstanding Service to Mankind and Womanhood by Methodist University College, Ghana (2013), among others.

Influencer is extradited to US in $2M romance scam targeting older, single Americans

A Ghanaian social media influencer has been extradited from the United Kingdom to the US for allegedly swindling over $2 million from older, single American men and women in a twisted lonely hearts scam, federal prosecutors said Monday.

Mona Faiz Montrage, 30, of Accra, Ghana, appeared in Manhattan federal court Monday for her alleged involvement in a series of romance schemes targeting older people who lived alone, prosecutors said.

Montrage — who had around 3.4 million Instagram followers of her page Hajia4Reall at one point — from at least 2013 through 2019 was involved with a group of con artists from West Africa who assumed fake identities to trick people into thinking they were in relationships with them using emails, texts, and social media messages, the feds said.

    Mona Faiz Montrage
Mona Faiz Montrage was extradited to the US on Friday in a romance scheme.

The scammers would then get the victims to transfer money to them under false pretenses — such as to help move gold to the US from overseas, to resolve bogus FBI investigations, and payments to help fake US Army officers in Afghanistan, court papers allege.

Montrage, in one case, allegedly duped a victim into sending her $89,000 through 82 wire transfers on the pretext of helping her father’s farm in Ghana, the court documents claim.

She tricked the person into believing the pair were married by sending them a tribal marriage certificate after a series of phone conversations using her real identity, the filing alleges.

Montrage’s Instagram profile was among the top 10 most followed in Ghana.

Montrage also received money from several others who were swindled by scammers in her network, prosecutors allege.

In total, Montrage netted $2 million in funds the group ripped off from victims to bank accounts she had in the Bronx and elsewhere, including one opened in the name of 4Reall Designs, a supposed clothing company.

She then allegedly laundered the stolen money to other members of the enterprise, the indictment charges.

Montrage allegedly tricked one person into thinking they were married to her and then got them to send her $89,000, prosecutors claim.
    Mona Faiz Montrage
In total, Montrage received over $2 million in stolen funds in the scheme she carried out with others, prosecutors claim.

“As alleged, Mona Faiz Montrage was a member of a criminal conspiracy that specifically targeted older Americans through romance scams,” Manhattan US Attorney Damian Williams said in a statement. “These scams can be both financially and emotionally devastating for vulnerable victims.”

“Thanks to the efforts of our law enforcement partners, Montrage was arrested abroad and has been brought to the United States to face justice,” the statement continued.

The social media influencer — whose Instagram account was among the top 10 most followed in Ghana –was arrested on Nov. 10, 2022, in the UK for the alleged conspiracy and brought to the US on Friday.

    Mona Faiz Montrage
She was arrested on Nov. 10 in the UK.
    Mona Faiz Montrage
The scheme allegedly went on from at least 2013 through 2019.

She is charged with wire fraud, money laundering, receipt of stolen money, and conspiracy and faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted on the top charge.

Montrage pleaded not guilty during her court appearance and was set to be released on home detention to her aunt’s New Jersey residence in the coming days on $500,000 bond, with GPS tracking via an ankle monitor, her lawyer and the prosecutor’s office confirmed.

“At this time all we know is that there are six alleged victims and only two dealt with a woman and only one of them claims that he dealt with Ms. Montrage,” her attorney, Adam Cortez, told The Post:

Cortez said that his client can only travel in certain parts of New York and New Jersey pending her case.

The lawyer said he couldn’t comment further until he receives more information and evidence from prosecutors.

  • BoG, Finance Ministry to sign MoU on $3bn IMF loan repayment

BoG, Finance Ministry to sign MoU on $3bn IMF loan repayment

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) will be signed between the Bank of Ghana and the Ministry of Finance to outline the repayment terms for the $3 billion loan from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

The loan agreement includes favorable terms such as a 0% interest rate, a grace period of 5.5 years, and a final maturity period of 10 years.

This loan falls under the Extended Credit Facility (ECF) arrangement, which spans over a period of three years between Ghana and the IMF.

As part of the program, Ghana aims to achieve a front-loaded fiscal adjustment equivalent to 5.1 percentage points of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) within the three-year period from 2023 to 2025. This adjustment will be achieved through the Primary Balance on a commitment basis and fiscal effort.

Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta emphasized that the management of debt, both domestic and external, is crucial in restoring public debt to sustainable levels by 2028 while adhering to the two binding constraints.

They are the Public Debt (in present value terms) to GDP ratio of 55% or less; and External Debt Service to Revenue ratio of 18% or less.

The programme will be monitored and reviewed semi-annually.

The Finance Minister emphasised that Ghana’s Post Covid-19 Programme for Economic Growth, which is the government’s blueprint for addressing the economic crisis and underpins the IMF Programme is aimed at restoring macroeconomic stability; bringing fiscal operations and public debt to sustainable levels, supporting structural reforms and promoting strong and inclusive growth while protecting the poor and vulnerable.

The Staff Level Agreement (SLA) was secured in record time in December 2022, six months after Ghana applied for a Fund-supported Programme.

BoG Act to be reviewed under new IMF deal

Reports indicate that as part of Ghana’s International Monetary Fund (IMF) programme, revisions will be made to the Bank of Ghana (BoG) Act to enhance the independence of the central bank and address fiscal dominance.

The amendments to the Act will introduce a stricter limit for monetary financing, establish mechanisms for monitoring and enforcing compliance, and provide a clear definition of emergency situations in which the limit can be temporarily lifted.

To meet the requirements set by the IMF, the Bank of Ghana and the Ministry of Finance have already signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) aimed at eliminating monetary financing during the programme, pending legislative changes.

Additionally, an updated Safeguards Assessment is underway to support the development of further changes to the Bank of Ghana Act. This assessment will review the risks associated with the government’s gold purchase and gold-for-oil programmes.

The debt restructuring process is expected to impact the balance sheet of the Bank of Ghana.

A report from the IMF states that the government and the central bank will assess the effects of the restructuring and work on plans for the recapitalization of the bank with technical assistance support from the Fund.

About 250,000 displaced as flood engulfs town in central Somalia

Following a devastating flood in the town of Beledweyne, central Somalia, nearly 250,000 individuals have been forced to flee their homes.

The overflow of the Shabelle river resulted in the town and surrounding areas being submerged, rendering approximately 99% of the population homeless, as reported by Abdirahmaan Dahir Gure, the Interior Minister of Hirshabelle State, in an interview with BBC Somali.

There are concerns that the floodwaters may also affect Bulo Burde town, located approximately 110 km (68 miles) away, prompting warnings from the United Nations (UN).

Climate change is believed to have significantly contributed to this disaster. Heavy rainfall in Somalia and the Ethiopian highlands upstream triggered flash floods, causing extensive damage to homes, crops, and livestock, according to Somali government officials.

Somalia has been gradually recovering from one of the worst droughts in decades, which resulted in nearly five consecutive failed rainy seasons and a near-catastrophic humanitarian crisis.

While the recent rainfall is helping to replenish water sources and promote vegetation growth, sustained and substantial rainfall will be required to mitigate the impact of the previous drought, as stated by the UN.

However this increases the risk of flooding.

Man City, Arsenal dominate Premier League award nominations

The nominations for the end-of-season awards in the Premier League have been announced, with Arsenal and Manchester City featuring prominently.

These two clubs have played a significant role in the captivating title race, with Manchester City currently leading the way in their pursuit of a historic treble.

In the category of Young Player of the Season, Arsenal has made a strong showing, with three of their players receiving nominations.

Captain Martin Odegaard, Bukayo Saka, and Gabriel Martinelli are all in contention for the prestigious award. However, last year’s winner Phil Foden is not among the nominees this time around.

Instead, his prolific Manchester City teammate Erling Haaland has been recognized for his exceptional performances.

Joining the Gunners trio and the Norwegian striker on the list of nominees are Brighton duo Moises Caicedo and Alexis Mac Allister, as well as Newcastle pair Sven Botman and Alexander Isak.

The competition for the Young Player of the Season award promises to be intense, with these talented individuals showcasing their skills throughout the campaign.

Unsurprisingly, Mikel Arteta and Pep Guardiola have both received nominations for the Premier League Manager of the Season award.

The Gunners boss has led the team to their highest finish since 2015-16, while the City manager is on the cusp of winning a fifth title in six years.

Newcastle’s Eddie Howe and Fulham boss Marco Silva both make the cut, as do Aston Villa leader Unai Emery and Brighton mastermind Roberto De Zerbi, who both joined their respective clubs during the 2022-23 season.

  • Office of Special Prosecutor accused of selective justice

Office of Special Prosecutor accused of selective justice

The lawyer representing Charles Bissue, the former Secretary to the Inter Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining, has accused the Special Prosecutor of practicing selective justice.

The lawyer, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah Esq., claims that the Special Prosecutor has failed to probe investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas regarding allegations made in the 2019 Galamsey Fraud Part 1 documentary.

According to Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah Esq., when Charles Bissue was invited for investigation by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), they requested to see the petition that prompted the investigation. However, the OSP has refused to fulfill this request.

The lawyer finds it perplexing that the Special Prosecutor is investigating Charles Bissue without involving Anas Aremeyaw Anas, who was responsible for airing the documentary. Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah Esq. views this as an irrational approach.

“Mr Martin Amidu, the former Special Prosecutor wrote an article and stated in there that apparently the Special Prosecutor Mr Kissi Adjabeng is the one who wrote the petition invoking the powers of the Special Prosecutor, and indeed he was also investigating Anas while he was in office in respect of this matter.

“And so, it is the current Special Prosecutor who then has decided not to investigate Anas in this matter. That then raised some curiosity necessitating the instant application to bring to the court’s attention to the effect that indeed it would be irrational for the Special Prosecutor to continue with its investigation and or prosecution of Mr Charles Bissue,” he said.

He indicated that the Special Prosecutor has on two occasions refused to provide the court with the petition that Anas Aremeyaw Anas filed invoking the powers of the OSP to investigate and prosecute Mr Bissue.

“Prior to the filing of this suit, we made a request for the petition that necessitated the investigation. On two occasions, we’ve made that request and the Special Prosecutor has refused to make that petition available to us.

“We thought that they were all leading to a certain conclusion or they were suggestive,” he argued.

The case has been adjourned to June 12, 2023 for the hearing of the motion for discovery, and the substantive suit which is seeking to restrain the OSP from investigating and prosecuting Mr Charles Bissue.

They are from various accredited training institutions including the University of Ghana (UG), Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS), the University of Cape Coast (UCC), the University for Development Studies (UDS), Accra College of Medicine (ACM), as well as other foreign-trained doctors who sat and passed the Council’s professional qualifying examinations.

In October 2022, the Medical and Dental Council (MDC) last Saturday inducted 461 newly qualified medical and dental practitioners into its fold.

One major issue confronting the Medical and Dental Council is the huge number of medical professionals, especially medical doctors, leaving the country to seek opportunities abroad.

A 2021 report from the House of Commons in the United Kingdom revealed that there are more health professionals of Ghanaian origin working for the National Health Service (NHS-UK) than in Ghana.

According to the report, a total of 3,395 healthcare workers from Ghana are working in the UK. This is against a total of 3,236 Ghanaians working in the country as of 2021, according to statistica.com.

The Council has entreated the health professionals to remain in the country and offer their services.

  • ‘Debt-distressed’ Ghana violated Debt Sustainability Analysis – IMF

‘Debt-distressed’ Ghana violated Debt Sustainability Analysis – IMF

Ghana has exceeded the thresholds set in the Debt Sustainability Analysis (DSA), resulting in the country experiencing debt distress, according to the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

In a statement titled “Request for an arrangement under the Extended Credit Facility Programme,” the IMF stated that Ghana’s debt level is not only unsustainable but also breaches the DSA thresholds.

“Given the ongoing debt restructuring and large and protracted breaches to the Debt Sustainability Analysis (DSA) thresholds, Ghana is in debt distress, and debt is assessed as unsustainable”.

Ghana breached Debt Sustainability Analysis leading to debt distress – IMF

By the end of 2022, the public debt in Ghana had risen to 88.1% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), with almost an equal distribution between external debt (42.4% of GDP) and domestic debt (45.7% of GDP). The International Monetary Fund (IMF) also noted that the country’s gross financing needs amounted to approximately 19% of GDP.

“Under the proposed programmes baseline projections, which do not consider the possible outcome of the ongoing debt restructuring, the ratios of present value of public and external debt to GDP, and the ratios of external debt service to revenues and exports are and would remain above their LIC-DSF thresholds over the medium and long term”, it added.

Additionally, the IMF has cautioned that the outlook carries significant downside risks.

The baseline projections rely on the successful execution of the programme and prompt implementation of the government’s comprehensive debt restructuring strategies and plans to tackle the substantial amount of domestic arrears, including those owed to independent power producers (IPPs).

Notwithstanding mitigation strategies, it said that the domestic debt exchange presents significant risks to domestic financial sector stability, adding “exchange rate, credit, and liquidity risks further add to the vulnerabilities”.

“The authorities’ debt restructuring plans still leave a substantial need for T-bill [Treasury bills] issuance in the near term and expose Ghana to the uncertainty in domestic market conditions, though programme implementation and outreach may help mitigate financing risks. Domestic policy slippages represent a significant downside risk to the projections, further compounded by risks associated to the end-2024 general elections.”

  • Over 620,000 hypertension and 24,000 stroke cases recorded as of Dec. 2022

Over 620,000 hypertension and 24,000 stroke cases recorded as of Dec. 2022

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has announced that it recorded a total of 622,849 hypertension and 24,781 stroke cases through the District Health Information Management System–2, a database for storing health service data, as of December 2022.

These cases together with complications were reported by all 16 regions of Ghana.

On its Twitter page, the GHS noted that studies estimate that 28-40% of the adult Ghanaian population have hypertension.

Hypertension (high blood pressure) is when the pressure in your blood vessels is too high (140/90 mmHg or higher). It is common but can be serious if not treated, according to the World Health Organisation.

The GHS observes that lifestyle changes such as eating healthier diets (diet with low salts, sugars, and fats; high fibre, fruits and vegetables), increasing physical activity and quitting tobacco use can help to prevent hypertension or lower blood pressure in persons already diagnosed.

The sensitisation by the GHS forms part of efforts to commemorate World Hypertension Day which is held on May 17 annually. The theme for this year was: “Measure your blood pressure accurately, control it, live longer.”

    Symptoms

Most people with hypertension don’t feel any symptoms. Very high blood pressures can cause headaches, blurred vision, chest pain and other symptoms.

Checking your blood pressure is the best way to know if you have high blood pressure. If hypertension isn’t treated, it can cause other health conditions like kidney disease, heart disease and stroke.

People with very high blood pressure (usually 180/120 or higher) can experience symptoms including:

    • severe headaches
    • chest pain
    • dizziness
    • difficulty breathing
    • nausea
    • vomiting
    • blurred vision or other vision changes
    • anxiety
    • confusion
    • buzzing in the ears
    • nosebleeds
    • abnormal heart rhythm

    Key facts

WHO reports that an estimated 1.28 billion adults aged 30–79 years worldwide have hypertension, most (two-thirds) living in low- and middle-income countries

Also, an estimated 46% of adults with hypertension are unaware that they have the condition.

Less than half of adults (42%) with hypertension are diagnosed and treated aqnd approximately 1 in 5 adults (21%) with hypertension have it under control.

Per the WHO, hypertension is a major cause of premature death worldwide.

One of the global targets for noncommunicable diseases is to reduce the prevalence of hypertension by 33% between 2010 and 2030, the WHO adds.

9-year-old Zimbabwean dies while fleeing traditional dancers

Tragedy struck in Zimbabwe as a nine-year-old girl met a fatal end while attempting to escape from traditional Nyau dancers who were performing in the suburb of Mabvuku, located east of the capital city, Harare.

According to a police statement released on Wednesday, the young girl fell to the ground and lost her life while fleeing from the Nyau dancers at a local school in Mabvuku on Monday. The police are currently conducting investigations into the incident but have not provided further details.

Nyau dancers, also known as zvigure/izitandari in the Shona language, are known to instill fear in children with their enigmatic dances and attire. While adults associate them with various myths and traditions, young children perceive them as menacing figures, as reported by local media.

The Nyau dancers primarily belong to the Chewa community, which is located in the northwestern regions of Zimbabwe, as well as in Malawi and Zambia. Their performances serve as a means to preserve and transmit the culture and history of the Chewa people.

  • Man charged with stealing Dorothy’s The Wizard of Oz slippers

Man charged with stealing Dorothy’s The Wizard of Oz slippers

A man has been charged by US prosecutors for the theft of the iconic red slippers worn by Judy Garland’s character Dorothy in the 1939 film “The Wizard of Oz.”

The valuable shoes were recovered in an FBI operation back in 2018, following their theft from a museum in August 2005. However, no arrests were made at that time.

Federal prosecutors have now filed charges against Terry Martin, a 76-year-old resident of Minnesota, for the theft of this significant artwork. These particular slippers are one of only four pairs known to exist.

The theft occurred at the Judy Garland Museum in Grand Rapids, Minnesota. The thief had broken through a window in the building’s back door to gain access, leaving no fingerprints and triggering no alarms, as reported by CBS News, the BBC’s US partner.

They were found in a sting operation launched by the FBI’s art crime team. The case is being handled by federal prosecutors in North Dakota and the FBI’s Minneapolis Division.

The red shoes are central to The Wizard of Oz. When Dorothy clicks the heels of the shoes together and says “there’s no place like home” she is transported back to Kansas.

Charging documents released on Tuesday contained no information about what led to Mr Martin’s arrest. On Wednesday, Martin told a reporter for the Minneapolis Star Tribune: “I gotta go on trial. I don’t want to talk to you.”

According to the newspaper, Mr. Martin resides approximately 12 miles away from the museum, which is situated at Judy Garland’s childhood home.

Janie Heitz, the executive director of the museum, stated that she does not believe the suspect had any association with the museum as an employee.

These cherished pieces of Hollywood memorabilia, valued at $3.5 million (£2.8 million), were appraised by the US Attorney’s Office for the District of North Dakota. It was noted that at the time of the theft, nearly 18 years ago, they were insured for $1 million.

One of the other pairs of red sequined slippers is housed at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC, while another pair was acquired by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences in 2012.

The stolen slippers remain under the custody of the FBI. “Until the court cases are done, nothing can be done with them,” the museum wrote on Facebook.

  • City thrashes Madrid to progress to Champions League final

City thrashes Madrid to progress to Champions League final

Manchester City are celebrating their return to the Champions League final after delivering one of the most remarkable performances in the club’s history by crushing reigning champions Real Madrid.

Under the guidance of Pep Guardiola, who is pursuing a historic treble, City dominated the 14-time European champions with an emphatic 4-0 victory at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday. This resounding win secured their spot in the highly anticipated Istanbul final, with an aggregate scoreline of 5-1.

The victory was thoroughly deserved, as City’s relentless pace and power proved too much for Madrid to handle. Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois’s heroics prevented an even more significant goal margin for the English side.

Bernardo Silva paved the way for City’s triumph with two first-half goals, followed by an own goal from Eder Militao and a late fourth from Julian Alvarez.

Now, City sets their sights on lifting the coveted trophy and seeking redemption for their defeat in the 2021 final. With the possibility of achieving a glorious treble, their upcoming final clash against Inter Milan holds immense significance for the club.

The first of those trophies could come on Sunday if they beat Chelsea to clinch the Premier League with the FA Cup final against Manchester United on June 3.

City manager Guardiola said: “In the Premier League we are close, we know we need one more game.

“We play against our neighbours and against an Italian team in the finals. The season is really, really good. Now we have to lift it. We are close and of course we are going to try.”

Last week’s semi-final first leg against Madrid in the Bernabeu Stadium had been an even contest.

City dominated possession for large spells but Real were more incisive on the counter-attack.

This time City refused to allow their opponents to sit back and feel comfortable soaking up pressure. They were far more dynamic and the Spanish giants could not handle their speed and movement.

The resounding win made for sweet revenge for City’s heartbreaking loss to Real and the same stage last season.

Guardiola said: “It was really tough losing the way we lost. In that moment we had to swallow poison but football and sport always gives you another chance.

“When the draw was Madrid, I said, ‘yeah I want it’.

“Everything was there – the energy we had from a year of being criticised as players for not having character when we lost.”

Carlo Ancelotti, coach of the dethroned champions, could not begrudge City their victory.

“I think that Manchester City deserved to win because they played better than us,” the Italian said.

  • Cedi world’s top-performing currency against the dollar

Cedi world’s top-performing currency against the dollar

In recent months, the Ghanaian cedi has emerged as the top-performing currency worldwide against the US dollar, exhibiting a remarkable 33% increase since November.

This outstanding surge places the cedi ahead of approximately 150 currencies tracked by Bloomberg, surpassing its counterparts in both emerging and frontier markets.

Market observers and investors attribute this impressive appreciation to the growing confidence surrounding Ghana’s imminent board approval from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for a $3 billion bailout package.

The relentless strengthening of the cedi persists, with the currency recording gains for a fourth consecutive day and reaching a trading level of 10.95 per US dollar as of 9:57 a.m. in Accra.

This sustained rally has bolstered investor confidence, leading to substantial returns of nearly 12% on Ghana’s dollar-denominated bonds.

This performance surpasses the average return of 3.6% achieved by similar instruments in emerging and frontier markets, as indicated by a Bloomberg index.

Economists and analysts closely monitor the developments regarding the IMF bailout, anticipating that the positive sentiment and potential disbursement of the initial tranche of funds could further drive the appreciation of the cedi in the coming days.

Daniel Kavishe, an Africa economist at Rand Merchant Bank, highlights the correlation observed in other markets that have received IMF programs and immediate fund disbursements, suggesting a similar positive reaction in Ghana.

Kavishe expresses his belief that the cedi could potentially trade at a rate below 10-to-1 against the US dollar if the authorities receive the initial funding.

The Ghanaian cedi’s surge against the US dollar has caught the attention of investors worldwide. As Ghana’s economic landscape continues to evolve, the nation is poised to leverage this momentum to attract greater investment and foster sustainable growth in the years to come.

  • More taxes to follow after IMF deal approval – Economist warns

More taxes to follow after IMF deal approval – Economist warns

An economist, Professor Godfred Bokpin, has urged the general public to brace themselves for an imminent tax hike, following the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) endorsement of Ghana’s bailout request.

In an interview with JoyNews on Wednesday, he elaborated on the reasoning behind this forecast, citing the government’s obligation to achieve a specific tax to GDP ratio during the programme evaluation.

“There are targets that we have to meet every six months of the program review. Part of the target may include increasing our tax-to-GDP ratio to let’s say 18%. The strategy in increasing the tax revenue could negatively impact businesses if we don’t adopt optimal tax handles,” Prof Bokpin said.

Following the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) long-awaited approval, Ghana’s Program request for a $3 billion Balance of Payment support to restore economic stability has been granted. In an official press release, the IMF stated that this endorsement would facilitate the prompt release of approximately US$600 million to Ghana.

“The program is based on the government’s Post COVID-19 Program for Economic Growth (PC-PEG), which aims to restore macroeconomic stability and debt sustainability and includes wide-ranging reforms to build resilience and lay the foundation for stronger and more inclusive growth,” parts of the statement read.

Meanwhile, Professor Bokpin emphasized the necessity for Ghana to implement stringent governance measures and productivity-boosting reforms to augment the benefits derived from the International Monetary Fund.

He asserted that the government must undertake substantial efforts to establish a sturdy macroeconomic stability in the near to medium future, particularly in light of the country’s anticipation of receiving the initial portion of the $3 billion facility from the IMF.

“What then is important is that how do we complement gains from the IMF, short term usually, by the necessary governance productivity and enhancing reforms that Ghana needs to do?” he further quizzed.

  • All you need to know about $3bn IMF-Ghana deal

All you need to know about $3bn IMF-Ghana deal

On May 17th, the IMF Executive Board gave its approval for a 36-month Extended Credit Facility (ECF) arrangement for Ghana, amounting to SDR 2.242 billion, which is equivalent to approximately US$3 billion.

This financial support from the IMF will provide Ghana with the necessary resources to address its economic challenges and implement reforms over the specified period.

The disbursement of funds will be carried out in stages, with an initial immediate disbursement of SDR 451.4 million (around US$600 million).

    Objective of the deal

Ghana’s economic program has three key objectives: restoring macroeconomic stability, ensuring debt sustainability, and laying the foundations for higher and more inclusive growth.

    Policy priorities

To reach Ghana’s economic program objectives a number of policy priorities have been laid out by the government:

First, large and frontloaded measures to bring public finances back on a sustainable path. This will be done through mobilizing more domestic revenue and improving the efficiency of public spending. Importantly, the program does – and will continue to – include efforts to protect the vulnerable.

The 2023 budget has for example doubled the benefits of the existing targeted cash transfer program, the Living Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) and boosted the allocations towards the school feeding program.

Second, to support the fiscal adjustment and enhance resilience to shocks, ambitious structural reforms will be implemented in the areas of tax policy, revenue administration, public financial management, as well as to address weaknesses in the energy and cocoa sectors.

Third, steps are being taken to bring inflation under control – for example with the Bank of Ghana raising interest rates and eliminating monetary financing of the budget. A flexible exchange rate policy will help rebuild international reserves.

Fourth, measures to preserve financial stability are very central to the program.

Finally, reforms are envisaged to encourage private investment, growth, and job creation.

    Protecting the most vulnerable

To protect the most vulnerable from the immediate impact of the crisis, the 2023 budget has doubled the benefits of the existing cash transfer program, the Living Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP).

In addition, the budgetary allocation of the Ghana School Feeding Program has been increased to compensate for the cost of inflation and make sure poor children continue to benefit from free meals at school. In the health sector, the financial resources for the National Health Insurance Scheme will be increased and made available on time to ensure the timely reimbursement of medical claims.

Spending toward key social program will be protected and monitored through an indicative target under the program.

    Transparency and fight corruption

The Ghanaian authorities are committed to improve governance and transparency under the Fund-supported program. For example, the authorities have requested IMF technical assistance to conduct a Governance Corruption Diagnostic Assessment, which will be used as input into the ongoing efforts to update the National anticorruption Action Plan; they also will address weaknesses in the existing asset declaration system for public officials, by enacting a new Conduct of Public Officers Act.

Furthermore, GRA, with support from IMF technical assistance, is developing a plan with the aim to improve the professional standards of tax administration in Ghana.

Ghana’s next steps in the debt restructuring process

Regarding official bilateral debt, the next step is for the Official Creditor Committee for Ghana, under the G20 Common Framework, to agree with the authorities the specific modalities of how official creditors intend to deliver debt relief consistent with Fund-program parameters.

The authorities are also engaging with their private creditors to seek relief on their external debt.

The reason some South Africans want VAT on chicken scrapped

A trade advocacy group has called for the removal of VAT on chicken in order for families to be able to feed themselves as the country stumbles “into a hunger pandemic.”

Francois Baird of the Fair Play Movement has warned that regular load shedding, or power blackouts, in South Africa was also contributing to the problem.

“The real effect is on the health of the nation,” Mr Baird said, adding that rising inflation and unemployment meant many people could no longer afford to pay for food.

He said that 27% of children under five were stunted in South Africa because mothers don’t get enough protein while pregnant and this carries on after the children are born, adding that the problem was worse in rural areas.

“Everything possible must be done also to assist small farmers.”

He said that reducing the cost of chicken by removing VAT would help address this, as chicken was a major source of protein for many people in South Africa.

He added that food prices were outpacing people’s salaries, warning that an essential basket of food costs more than the minimum wage per month.

  • Finally! Ghana clinches $3 billion IMF bailout deal

Finally! Ghana clinches $3 billion IMF bailout deal

The IMF Executive Board approved, on May 17th, an SDR 2.242 billion (about US$3 billion) 36-month Extended Credit Facility (ECF) arrangement for Ghana.

This decision enabled an immediate disbursement equivalent to SDR 451.4 million (about US$600 million).

The rest is expected to be disbursed in tranches every six months, following program reviews approved by the IMF Executive Board.

A press briefing scheduled to take place on Thursday, May 18, will provide the opportunity for IMF Chief for Ghana, Stephane Roudet and Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Ataa to share further details of the deal.

The press briefing will also feature key participants such as Dr Ernest Addison, Governor of the Bank of Ghana; and Tatiana Mossot, Senior Communications Officer at the IMF.

This development comes after Ghana received necessary debt assurances from the Paris Club and China to support its request for balance of payment assistance from the IMF.

The creditor committee, co-chaired by France and China, examined the macroeconomic and financial situation of Ghana, including its long-term debt sustainability, and endorsed its request for a debt treatment under the “Common Framework for Debt Treatments beyond the DSSI” endorsed by the Paris Club.

In a statement, the creditor committee encouraged multilateral development banks to maximize their support for Ghana to meet its long-term financial needs.

Kristalina Georgieva, Managing Director of the IMF welcomed the creditor’s assurances. She said, “This statement provides the necessary financing assurances for the IMF Executive Board to consider the proposed Fund-supported program and unlock much-needed financing from Ghana’s development partners.”

Ghana reached out to the IMF in July 2022 after several months of opposing a return to the Fund. Ghana seeks to restore its economy and to do that, needs assistance from the IMF.

Though government officials says the IMF bailout is not the panacea to the economy’s crisis, it however does form part of the measures to resolve the economic turmoil the West African country finds herself.

Prince Harry and Meghan nearly suffer same fate as Princess Diana in ‘paparazzi car chase’

In a bone-chilling incident reminiscent of Princess Diana’s tragic fate, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle found themselves in a harrowing encounter with paparazzi on Tuesday night, resulting in what has been described by their representatives as a “near catastrophic car chase”.

The Duke’s mother-in-law, Doria Ragland, who joined Harry and Meghan at the Women of Vision Awards, held at the city’s Ziegfeld Ballroom nearly suffered the same fate.

Prince Harry (C), Meghan (R) and Doria Ragland (L)

The “highly aggressive paparazzi” for over two hours subjected the family to “a near catastrophic car chase.”

This according to the couple’s spokesperson “resulted in multiple near collisions involving other drivers on the road, pedestrians and two NYPD officers.”

Harry and Meghan who feel more estranged from the Royal Family believe that despite the fact that “being a public figure comes with a level of interest from the public, it should never come at the cost of anyone’s safety.”

Detailing how the lives of Harry and Meghan were saved, the source said a NYPD protective team followed Harry and Meghan in another car, and they had to try some evasive maneuvers to get away from the paparazzi.

There were a lot of close calls including short stops between front and backs of cars – but there was no car accident.

In the couple’s Netflix six-part docuseries Harry pushed back against critics who have said they’ve “got such a problem with paparazzi.”

“Back in my mum’s day, it was physical harassment – cameras in your face, following you, chasing you,” he explained.

“Paparazzi still harass people,” he added. “But the harassment really exists more online now. Once the photographs are out and the stories then put next to it, then comes the social media harassment. To see another woman in my life, who I love, go through this feeding frenzy – that’s hard. It is basically the hunter versus the prey.”

Study reveals females in Ho consume ‘akpeteshie’ beyond recommended quantities than men

A study conducted by the University of Allied Health Sciences and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has discovered that female residents at Ho consume akpeteshie beyond recommended quantities.

Per the study led by Dr Fidelis Kpodo and Dr Nii Korley Kortei at the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics at the University of Allied Health Sciences, the majority of women (66.7%) consumed akpeteshie beyond recommended quantities (1–2 drinks/day).

The report published in the 2023 edition of the Journal, Scientific African noted that 51.15 per cent of the males on the other hand consumed normal quantities of the drink (2–3 drinks per day).

“Females tend to consume small quantities of alcohol because of a relatively lower blood and fluid volume which is more vulnerable to the adverse outcomes of alcohol. Additionally, societal norms and traditional gender role attitudes had contributed to reduced alcohol consumption among females.

“In Ghana, Akpeteshie is considered a “hard” drink and a preserve of men, hence females have high preference for beer and wine,” the study provided as reason for difference in quantity.

Akpeteshie is a locally distilled liquor in Ghana and other West African countries. The local gin is known as “Koutoukou” in Ivory Coast and “ogogoro” in Nigeria by Ohimain.

The University of Allied Health Sciences and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) undertook cross-sectional study done in Ho, Volta Region of Ghana to among others survey the types of alcoholic beverages consumed, the frequency of akpeteshie consumption as well as the volume of akpeteshie consumed.

The survey was conducted using simple random sampling of 140 participants in various drinking spots/bars in the Ho municipality.

Most participants consumed akpeteshie every day (53.57%) whilst others consumed it occasionally (8.57%), 1–2 times in a week (9.29%), 3–4 times per week (22.86%) and 5–6 times in a typical week (5.71%).

Mona Faiz Montrage, a renowned Ghanaian musician and influencer known as Hajia4Reall, has pleaded not guilty to charges related to an alleged $2 million romance scam.

She was extradited from the UK to the US and appeared before a judge, but remains in custody until all bail conditions are satisfied.

Prosecutors have charged Montrage with conspiracy to commit and committing wire fraud, as well as money laundering, each carrying a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison. Additionally, she faces charges of receipt of stolen money with a maximum sentence of 10 years, and conspiracy to receive stolen money with a maximum of five years.

Montrage, along with her alleged criminal group, is accused of engaging in fraudulent activities, specifically targeting older American individuals, both men and women, as well as businesses, through romance scams spanning from 2013 to 2019.

Prosecutors claim that they employed various means of communication, such as emails, text messages, and social media, to deceive victims into believing they were involved in romantic relationships, ultimately exploiting them for monetary gains.

One particular incident alleges that Montrage extorted approximately $89,000 through 82 wire transfers after presenting the victim with a counterfeit traditional marriage certificate. Prosecutors have also accused her of defrauding individuals under false pretenses.

With over four million followers on Instagram, Montrage holds significant influence in Ghana, and news of her alleged involvement in these activities has elicited shock and disappointment within the country. However, US prosecutors stress that these charges are merely accusations, and Montrage is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Montrage is scheduled to appear in court again on June 28th.

It was noted that the fire caused extensive damage primarily because the residents initially attempted to handle the situation themselves, inadvertently exacerbating the intensity of the blaze.

Meanwhile, the cause of the fire is still unknown.

  • Supreme Court disqualifies James Quayson as Assin North MP

Supreme Court disqualifies James Quayson as Assin North MP

Mr James Gyakye Quayson ceases to be a representative for the people of Assin North Constituency in Parliament.

The Supreme Court which heard the dual citizenship case against Mr Quayson has instructed Parliament to expunge his name from its records.

Following the 2020 presidential and parliamentary elections, one Michael Ankomah Nimfah dragged Mr Quayson to a High Court for contesting the Assin North seat while in possession of dual citizenship.

He argued that per the laws of the land, Mr Quayson was unqualified to file his processes to the Electoral Commission (EC) and contest.

The Cape Coast High Court after hearing both the petitioner and respondent in July 2021, nullified Mr Quayson’s’ election on the basis that the MP held Canadian citizenship at the time he filed to contest the seat.

However, Mr Quayson continued to parade himself as a legislator. This prompted the petitioner to take his case to the Supreme Court for interpretation of Article 94 (2) (a).

He also prayed the court to declare that the EC breached Article 94(2)(a) of the 1992 Constitution when it allowed Mr Quayson to contest the parliamentary election in Assin North when he owed allegiance to another country.

He again urged the apex court to declare entire process that led to Mr Quayson’s election as MP for Assin North as unconstitutional and, therefore, null and void.

In April 2022, the apex court instructed the now former NDC MP, Gyakye Quayson to stop holding himself as an elected MP until the determination of the suit challenging his election.

In a 5-2 majority decision, the apex court ordered Mr Quayson to abstain from any Parliamentary business and also refrain from engaging in activities pertaining to an MP.

Mr Quayson’s lawyers filed an appeal but the Supreme Court dismissed it.

On Wednesday, May 17, 2023, the panel of seven presided over by Justice Jones Dotse which also includes Justice Nene Amegatcher, Justice Mariama Owusu, Justice Prof. Henrietta Mensa-Bonsu, Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, (CJ nominee), Justice Yonny Kulendi and Justice Barbara Ackah-Yensu sat to finally address the matter.

In court, the Supreme Court observed that the High Court in Cape Coast had declared the election of Mr Quayson as null and void, hence allowing him to remain in the capacity as MP “will be an indictment of the administration of justice.”

“There can be no justification for ignoring the submissions on the continued disregard of the orders of the High Court which have not been suspended or overturned,” the court held.

The apex court further expressed that “it will be failing in its exclusive mandate and duty to the Ghanaian people to uphold and defend the Constitution if it does not suspend, mitigate or abate an alleged constitutionality illegality if the applicant were to succeed in the end of this suit.”

Justice Dordzie and Amegatcher, in their opinion noted that there was no need for the apex court’s intervention as the petitioner just needed to enforce the High Court’s decision.

In view of this, a unanimous decision taken by the seven-member panel read that Mr Quayson’s name be expunged from Parliament’s records.

Mahama to review dual citizenship law in next government

Former President John Dramani Mahama has promised to review the constitutional provision that prevents Ghanaians with dual citizenship from holding political positions in the country.

According to him, such a law cannot be allowed to remain in the current scheme of things.

Mr Mahama insisted that the law hurts the country’s human resource and must not be allowed to fester any longer.

“But I want to assure the people of Ghana and James Gyakye Quayson, who is our MP for Assin North, that when NDC comes to power, we will clarify that constitutional provision that compels them to give up their foreign citizenship before they contest elections,” he said on May 7, 2023, in Tamale.

UN wants $3bn to fund humanitarian operations in Sudan

The United Nations is currently in urgent need of approximately $3 billion (£2.4 billion) to support humanitarian operations in Sudan.

The organization anticipates that over a million individuals will be forced to flee the country due to the ongoing conflict between the national army and rival militia groups.

Ramesh Rajasingham, the UN’s humanitarian affairs coordinator, has stated that more than half of Sudan’s population, which amounts to 25 million people, require assistance and protection.

This staggering figure represents the highest number of individuals in need ever recorded in the country.

Unfortunately, providing aid remains a significant challenge as access for humanitarian agencies is severely hindered.

The conflict, which erupted a month ago, has led to the looting of supplies and attacks on aid workers. These obstacles further exacerbate the dire humanitarian situation in Sudan.

Hajj Board sends delegation to inspect facilities in Saudi Arabia ahead of pilgrimage

A delegation led by Board Chair of the Pilgrims Affairs of Ghana, Ben Abdallah Banda, is in Saudi Arabia to inspect facilities ahead of this year’s Hajj.

The inspection is expected to last for three days to ensure the about 6,000 Ghanaian pilgrims are well catered for.

The first batch of Ghana’s Hajj pilgrims are expected to leave Ghana for Saudi Arabia on June 9, 2023.

Things looked out for include accommodation and transportation.

These facilities and logistics were procured before the new board was established and the visit, according to the board.

“Since our appointment, we have had series of engagements with various stakeholders in Ghana, and this visit is to give us a deep insight into what has been arranged,” Ben Abdallah Banda said.

“We have to see things on the ground for first hand information and further engage, where necessary, to ensure all is well before the pilgrims start arriving,” he added.

  • Sheikh Jassim presents upgraded bid for United takeover

Sheikh Jassim presents upgraded bid for United takeover

Reports have it that Sheikh Jassim has submitted an improved bid in his pursuit to acquire Manchester United from the Glazer family.

This comes after both Sheikh Jassim and his rival, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, had previously submitted what was expected to be their final bids for the club last month.

In an effort to strengthen his position amidst growing confidence in the Ratcliffe camp, Sheikh Jassim has raised the value of his offer. The offer, which remains for the complete ownership of the club, includes provisions to clear all existing debts and also features a separate fund dedicated to the club and its community.

The ongoing takeover situation has left officials and staff at Old Trafford seeking clarity. The process began in November when Manchester United announced their exploration of “strategic alternatives” to enhance the club’s growth, including the possibility of a full sale.

Sheikh Jassim was the first potential buyer to publicly confirm his bid during the initial round in February, followed shortly by Ratcliffe, the owner of INEOS and a Manchester native.

The first quarter of this year was initially regarded as a crucial period in a prolonged process that has threatened to overshadow Manchester United’s pursuit of a Champions League qualification spot.

February’s soft deadline was followed by a second deadline in March for those that progressed, with Raine Group, brought in to oversee the sale, then asking interested parties for their third and final bid on April 28.

United fans have made clear their desire for a full buy-out from the Glazers, who have been unpopular since their leveraged takeover of the club in 2005.

FIFA approves Balogun’s switch from England to US

FIFA has confirmed Arsenal striker Folarin Balogun’s request to change his national team allegiance from England to the United States.

The 21-year-old, who was born in New York and is currently on loan at French club Reims, previously represented England at the Under-21 level but has now decided to pursue his senior international career with his country of birth.

A FIFA spokesperson told the PA news agency said: “The change of association of the player Folarin Jolaoluwa Balogun from England to the USA has been approved.”

Having been born in America, Balogun moved to England when he was two years old and also qualifies for Nigeria through his parents.

Qualifying players are allowed to switch associations before they have played a competitive match for a nation’s senior team.

Balogun has made 10 first-team appearances and scored two goals for the Gunners, and spent the second half of the 2021-22 season on loan at Sky Bet Championship Middlesbrough.

  • GRA chases 93 businesses for not issuing VAT invoices

GRA chases 93 businesses for not issuing VAT invoices

Ninety-three (93) businesses are being dragged to court by the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), following their failure to issue Value Added Tax (VAT) invoices for goods sold.

This, according to the Authority, is in efforts to clamp down on businesses that are not paying the right taxes to the state as well as mobilise the expected revenue for the state.

The 93 businesses were detected after a test purchase was conducted on about 115 shops across the Greater Accra region.

As a result, the Enforcement Unit of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has indicated its readiness to prosecute the 93 shops and business owners.

The exercise is expected to help the GRA mobilise revenue for the state, as well as aid in meeting its revenue target.

These 93 businesses were identified after a test purchase was conducted on about 115 shops across the Greater Accra region.

Speaking to the media, the Commissioner in charge of Domestic Tax Division at the GRA, Edward Gyamerah, said the figure translates into a non-compliance rate of 80.9%.

“Test purchases conducted on 115 tax payers sampled for a week revealed a total number of 93 taxpayers not issuing the VAT invoice. This translates into a non-compliance rate of 80.9%”, he said.

Another challenge facing the Authority, he said, was refusal of some other businesses to register for tax payment even though they were obliged by law to do so.

“It is an offence for a registered taxpayer to fail to issue a VAT invoice for a purchase made therefore we shall make them face the law ” he said.

Managers of Chez Amis, Waves Lounge all at East Legon and Grand Pacific at the Dzorwulu Junction were picked up by the enforcement team during the operation Tuesday, May 17, 2023.

Meanwhile, the team was prevented from getting access to the Departure of the Airport terminal 3 to arrest about 10 business owners for failing to comply with the tax laws.

  • Vodafone Group to take away 11,000 jobs

Vodafone Group to take away 11,000 jobs

Vodafone Group announced on Tuesday its intention to reduce its workforce by 11,000 employees over a three-year period.

The telecom company aims to revitalize its performance after a prolonged period of poor results.

The job cuts will primarily impact Vodafone’s UK headquarters and operations in various other countries. Following this announcement, Vodafone’s shares in London experienced a decline of over 4%.

“Our performance has not been good enough,” CEO Margherita Della Valle said. “We will simplify our organization, cutting out complexity to regain our competitiveness.”

Two decades ago, Vodafone was the world’s biggest mobile telecom group, having bought Germany’s Mannesmann in 2000 in the largest takeover in history. The deal was valued at about $190 billion.

But the company, which has businesses in 21 countries and partnership agreements with local operators in another 46 locations, has struggled to retain market share.

Vodafone employs 104,000 people worldwide, according to its latest annual report. Apart from the United Kingdom, it is a major provider of mobile networks in Germany, Spain, Italy and parts of Africa.

Della Valle, who was appointed to the role three weeks ago after almost 30 years with the company, said her priorities were “customers, simplicity and growth.”

European telecoms companies have fared particularly poorly over the past decade, delivering lower returns to shareholders than in the United States, according to McKinsey.

Within a challenging sector, Vodafone’s performance relative to peers had “worsened over time,” Della Valle said in a video posted to the company’s website.

“Our performance relative to our major competitors in our largest markets has not been good enough, and we know that this is strongly connected to the experience of our customers not being good enough,” she added. Shares in Vodafone have fallen 28% over the past year.

Under its turnaround plan, Vodafone would invest more in its customer experience and also direct more resources towards Vodafone Business, serving corporate clients, which was growing in nearly all the company’s European markets.

The strategic overhaul comes as Vodafone’s results showed revenue for the year to March grew by just 0.3% to €45.7 billion ($49.8 billion). Adjusted earnings declined to €14.7 billion ($16 billion), below the company’s own guidance, because of high energy prices and a weak performance in Germany, its biggest market.

Vodafone said it would generate free cash flow of around €3.3 billion ($3.6 billion) for this financial year, compared to €4.8 billion ($5.2 billion) for the year to end March.

3 Sonko supporters dead after clash with Police in Senegal

Clashes between Senegalese police and supporters of opposition politician Ousmane Sonko have resulted in the death of three individuals.

The protests erupted on Monday in Dakar, the capital, and the southern city of Ziguinchor ahead of Sonko’s scheduled court appearance.

Sonko, who is facing rape allegations, has denied the charges and did not appear for the latest hearing, causing a one-week adjournment.

His allies claim that the case is a political maneuver designed to prevent his candidacy in the upcoming presidential election.

Authorities have stated that one of the deceased individuals was a police officer who was accidentally crushed by an armored vehicle.

  • ECG disconnects power to Kejetia Market again

ECG disconnects power to Kejetia Market again

Trading activities in the Kejetia Market, a significant commercial hub in the Ashanti Regional capital, have been disrupted for over a week due to a power outage.

The market owes the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) 5.4 million cedis in unpaid bills. Vendors selling perishable goods have been particularly affected since the power supply was cut off on Tuesday, May 9, 2023.

The market managers argue that traders have not paid for the electricity, which hinders them from settling the outstanding debt with the ECG.

However, the traders claim that they have consistently paid their monthly dues to the market facility managers.

“After the disconnection, leadership of the traders confronted management on why we are being disconnected from the national grid. We are at a loss as to how and why the debt is so huge because every month, the management gives traders bills to pay. We have been paying the bills. But the management says otherwise,” Eric Nana Kwasi Prempeh, Chairman of the Federation of Kumasi Traders revealed.

Days after the blackout, a generator set at the facility was powered to serve as an alternative.

This was however unsustainable as the traders feared the cost of fuel would be passed on to them.

The traders are now resorting to the use of flashlights for their activities at night.

Butchery and cold store operators at the market are the worst affected, as their goods are being damaged.

A cold store operator, Ataa Papa said “For about 3 days now, my fresh meat has been going bad. They assured us of a re-connection, so we left our meat here. The next day, the lights were still off. All our meat have gone bad. It is really affecting us.”

“I sometimes tie a flashlight on my forehead, or hang it on a pole. That is not a bother. Our worry is that our meat is going bad. We have taken loans from rural banks. We buy cattle and slaughter to sell, but the blackout is making our meat get rotten. We are forced to sell our meat cheaply,”another lamented.

Others say thieves have taken advantage of the blackout to steal from traders, whereas some patrons of the market are outwitting traders with fake currencies.

“Some customers have been bringing counterfeits, because it is dark here. A counterfeit 20 cedis note was given to me last week. Traders have to be vigilant so they do not fall victim,” Theresa Boakye said.

“I just got here from Accra. This place is dark. The thieves are taking advantage of the darkness to steal. They spy on you as do your transactions” another trader said.

Trade unions at the market have asked for the speedy installation of individual meters by the Electricity Company of Ghana.

Galamsey pit at Korley Teye allegedly empty; miners claimed to have escaped through backup route

Deputy Director of National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Douglas, has said it is likely that the remaining miners who were believed to be trapped in the collapsed pit at Korley Teye in the Birim North District of the Eastern Region may have found an escape route.

Seven miners have been confirmed dead, and while one eyewitness mentioned that five others were rescued with injuries, NADMO can only confirm the whereabouts of three survivors.

The specific hospital where the injured miners were taken is unknown. Local residents suggest that injured victims of illegal mining accidents avoid seeking help from official facilities or reporting to the police due to fears of being handed over to law enforcement agencies.

An eyewitness, Frank Owusu Amoah, who said he personally got involved in rescue efforts, told Adom News he saw five persons rescued alive, who were taken to the hospital with injuries.

However Deputy NADMO Director, Douglas Adomako said has told Adom News Akwasi Dwamena that they managed to save three persons who are currently responding to treatment at the hospital.

He added that the rest may have used another root to escape from danger and that there is nobody in the pit.

Emmanuel Okyere, Unit Committee Secretary said the casualty rate could have been higher, explaining that torrential rains prevented many miners from going down the tunnel, leaving the field to the ‘very stubborn’ ones.

He said when they heard of the accident, they mobilised to attempt to rescue the trapped, however their efforts yielded only seven dead bodies.

Emmanuel Okyere said he was yet to confirm that one of those rescued with injuries may have died as well.

The Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium in Tamale is expected to undergo major renovation and maintenance works, the Minister for Youth and Sports, Mustapha Ussif has revealed.

The sports facility is among the many stadia being worked on to enhance consumer experience to translate into deeper interest in the local sports.

The Ministry of Sports has embarked on a series of renovation works on the Accra Sports Stadium, Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi and the Essipon Sports Stadium in the Western Region.

Mr Mustapha Ussif acknowledged the need to refurbish the deteriorating Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium during a visit to the facility over its removal from the national grid.

Aside from being in a deplorable state, the stadium is indebted to the Northern Electricity Distribution Company Limited (NEDCo) to a tune of GHc466,000.

The infrastructure’s VVIP session, toilet facilities and popular stands are currently an eye-saw due to rusting and lack or the absence of janitorial services.

The Confederation of African Football and the Federation of International Football Association has continued to reject international matches scheduled at the facility due to its current condition.

It is yet to be made public the amount going to be spent to renovate the stadium.

Meanwhile, the Sports Minister has announced that the first phase of renovation and maintenance works on a number of stadia have been completed pending the second phase.

A fire outbreak at Madina-Riz Junction on Monday, May 15, 2023, claimed the life of one  28-year-old Rose Minta believed to be sick and bedridden.

The incident per information from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) occurred in the late morning of Monday.

It took over 2 hours for the firemen to completely douse the flame. The  rapid spread of the fierce fire was aided by the close proximity of other combustibles and wooden structures in the vicinity of the fire, the Fire Service said.

Three pumps from Legon, Adenta and Headquarters were mobilized to the fire scene to augment firefighting.

According to the GNFS, a total of 14 makeshift wooden structures used for both residential and commercial purposes and their contents have been destroyed.

Pop star changes name from The Weeknd to Abel Tesfaye on social media

The Weeknd, the Canadian pop star famous for hit songs like “Blinding Lights,” has decided to use his birth name, Abel Tesfaye, on his social media accounts.

In April, he reached out to his fans on Twitter, asking for their opinion on whether he should make the switch.

“ABEL formally known as The Weeknd?” he asked his fans in a tweet that received over one hundred thousand likes.

The name change comes after the award winning artist revealed he wanted to “kill The Weeknd” to W Magazine.

“I’m going through a cathartic path right now” he said. “It’s getting to a place and time where I’m getting ready to close The Weeknd chapter.”

The artist has previously said his name came about after he dropped out of school and took his mattress “leaving one weekend and never coming home”, the Daily Mail reported.

But he told W Magazine: “As the Weeknd, I’ve said everything I can say.” He added that his next album would probably be his “last hurrah” under that name.

Abel Tesfaye, born in Toronto to Ethiopian immigrants, gained fame by sharing his initial songs on YouTube in 2010. His unique brand of dark, explicit R&B explored themes of drug use, casual sex, and isolation.

His breakthrough came when Canadian rapper Drake featured his early demos on his personal blog, leading to the creation of a nine-song mixtape called “House of Balloons,” which Tesfaye released as a free download.

Throughout his music career, he has achieved tremendous success, winning four Grammy Awards, earning over 45 platinum singles and albums, and setting numerous music records.

In March 2023, he was officially recognized by Guinness World Records as the most popular artist globally, based on his remarkable number of monthly listeners on Spotify.

By March 2023, at the age of 33, Tesfaye boasted 111.4 million monthly listeners on Spotify, becoming the first artist ever to reach the milestone of 100 million monthly listeners on the streaming platform.

“The Weeknd currently has almost 30 million more monthly listeners than second-placed Miley Cyrus (82.4 million)” they wrote in a press release.

More than 20 missing in Malawi after hippo attack

More than 20 individuals are unaccounted for in Malawi following a canoe accident on the Shire River in the southern Nsanje region.

The canoe, carrying approximately 37 people en route to their fields on the Mozambican side, was struck by a hippopotamus and overturned.

One infant’s body has been recovered so far. Efforts by detectives and rescue teams to locate the missing individuals are ongoing, with expectations of a rising death toll. Thirteen people have been rescued thus far.

The area’s lawmaker highlighted the presence of crocodiles and hippos in the river, emphasizing that the boats used were not motorized.

This incident marks the third fatal accident on the river in three years.

Malawi is still in the process of recovering from a destructive tropical storm in March, which claimed the lives of 511 people and left 533 others missing.
