In the Ashanti Region alone, 118 pregnant women died during childbirth in 2022.
The percentage, according to the Ghana Health Service, accounts for 22% of the 875 fatalities reported nationally throughout the study period.
The maternal mortality rate increased slightly from 132 to 134 per 10,000 live births during the review period.
The alarming number has a number of causes, according to an ongoing yearly health performance review in the area.
Speaking at the event, the Ashanti Regional Health Directorate, Dr Emmanuel Tinkorang said the major cause of maternal deaths are eclampsia and postpartum haemorrhage.
He added that the percentage of maternal death audited in the region was 100%.
“Maternity death still remains a major challenge in the region during the year under review, our maternal mortality rate increases marginally from 110 to 2000 live birth to 134 per 100,000 live birth.
“The total number of maternal deaths recorded in the region was 181,” he said.
He went on to say that during the year, the region however saw an improvement in some key indicators, whilst other indicators reduced the family planning accepted rate reduced slightly from 28.1 in 2021 to 27.4 in 2022.
The proportion of service delivery improved from 60.7 in 2021 to 65% in 2022.
The prevalence of anaemia in pregnancy also improved from 33.3% in 2020, dropping to 29.6% in 2022, he stated.
on his part, the General Service Dr Patrick Kumah Aboakye is unhappy with the maternal death figures in the Ashanti Region.
He wants head authorities to work on reducing maternal mortality in order to reduce the national burden.
An undercover report by Al Jazeera’s Investigative Unit released in March 2023 has shed light on a bigger issue than just money laundering by members of “Africa’s Gold Mafia”.
In the report, Zimbabwean diplomat and pastor, Uebert Angel, who was caught on camera admitting to laundering millions of dollars through a gold-smuggling scheme, made a statement about President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s rule.
According to Uebert Angel, Mnangagwa will be president until he dies.
Uebert Angel and President Emmerson Mnangagwa
“Okay, let me just say don’t worry. He will be president, okay? Don’t worry about it.This president will be president until he dies. That’s all. I’ve said a lot,” he is recorded saying.
Uebert Angel mentioned his role as an ambassador at large and the influence it gives him in Zimbabwean affairs while talking to undercover Al Jazeera journalists who pretended to be Chinese nationals looking to launder large sums of money.
“I’m [an] ambassador at large. I’m [an] ambassador to 85 countries. But on this special envoy, I’m a representative of the president. That means I can sign contracts. I can sign treaties with governments without the president getting involved,” he noted.
According to the reports, Uebert claimed several times that Mnangagwa was aware of his schemes. “I can call the president now, not tomorrow, now and put him on speaker, it’s not an issue, We are the government.” he mentioned.
“You want gold, gold we can do it right now, we can make the call right now, and it’s done,” Angel told Al Jazeera’s reporters. “It will land in Zimbabwe – Zimbabwe can’t touch it too until I get to my house. So, there can be a diplomatic plan. So, it is a very, very easy thing,” he said.
Mnangagwa, who has been in power since 2017 after ousting Robert Mugabe, served as Vice President of Zimbabwe from 2014.
It is unclear whether Uebert Angel’s statement was prophetic or not, but his prophecies have come true in the past.
During the 2020 Ghanaian presidential election, Uebert Angel prophesied President Akufo-Addo’s victory. Akufo-Addo received 51.59% of the vote, beating former president Mahama, who secured 47.36%, according to the Electoral Commission.
However, concerns over “vote-rigging” in Zimbabwe’s previous elections raise suspicions about the legitimacy of Mnangagwa’s presidency.
Uebert Angel’s ambassadorial appointment was made in 2021 by President Mnangagwa, who was declared president-elect in August 2018 by the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission after obtaining 50.8% of the votes.
Emmerson Mnangagwa took the oath of office in August 2018
His opponent, Nelson Chamisa, who represented the Movement for Democratic Change Alliance, secured 44.3% of the vote cast.
Chamisa accused Mnangagwa of “trying to bastardise the result,” and then proceeded to court but his election challenge was thrown out.
Nelson Chamisa lost the 2018 election
Meanwhile, the revised constitution limits the president to two 5-year terms, and the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission is yet to announce the exact date for the next general election to be held in 2023, but it has revealed that it would be held in either July or August.
Vice President of the United States of America, Kamala Harris, has appointed US Ambassador to Ghana, Virginia Palmer, a liaison officer between Oguaa Traditional Council and the US.
She made the appointment while at Cape Coast on Tuesday following a request by the Paramount Chief of Ogua, Osaberima Nana Kwesi Atta II.

The liaison, according to the chief, will improve contacts between the White House and the paramountcy in order to support the latter’s undertaking of specific development projects with the help of the former.
U.S Vice President Kamala Harris and Second Gentleman Douglas Emhoff received a traditional Kente cloth, from the Chief of Cape Coast, Osabarima Kwesi Atta II, at the Emintsimadze Palace in Cape Coast.
Kamala Harris further noted that a positive relationship will assist both groups forge a stronger bond and enable them to re-learn history for the benefit of passing it on to future generations and preserving their sense of historical pride.
The Oguaamanhene further asked for a reciprocal visit to the White House as a show of solidarity between Oguaa and the United States of America.
“I have intentionally not talked about the castle which I know you’re going to visit. Over the years we’ve had President Obama and the wife visiting the castle, we’ve had the wife of President Trump, we’ve had Pelosi and now it’s your turn.
“When you go there, and you carefully look around, you’ll ask yourself so many questions. Why should anybody treat anybody the way our ancestors were treated and this gives a lot of thought but we’re not in those days now,” he indicated.
Meanwhile, Vice President Harris is expected to leave Ghana on Wednesday to continue her 9-day trip in Africa.
Herve Renard, who is expected to be approved as the head coach of France’s women’s team, has announced his resignation to Saudi Arabia.
Before the Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand later this year, Renard, whose contract as the coach of Saudi Arabia would have expired in 2027, will take command of the French team.
The 54-year-old will take over as Les Bleues coach in place of Corinne Diacre. She has previously won the Africa Cup of Nations as a coach.
Diacre resigned from her position amid a player exodus regarding her leadership style and team dynamics.
In a statement on social media, the Saudi national team said: “The Saudi Arabian Football Federation Board of Directors has agreed on the contract termination of the Head Coach of the Saudi National Team Mr Herve Renard upon his request.
“A legal settlement has been reached to end the contract between the two parties.
“The President and Board of Directors of SAFF wish for Mr Renard every success in his future career.”
Renard took the post in 2019 and guided Saudi Arabia to their second successive World Cup finals, becoming the foreign-born manager with the most wins in the nation’s history.
He led Saudi Arabia to a shock 2-1 win over eventual champions Argentina in their first group game in Qatar, but defeats to Poland and Mexico meant they failed to reach the knock-out rounds.
Renard oversaw a 2-1 friendly defeat to Bolivia on Tuesday and later posted on social media: “Having been the coach of the national team of Saudi Arabia is a great pride for me.
“Since August 2019, I had the chance to be an integral part of the life of this beautiful country. I have seen this team grow alongside me and achieve a fabulous World Cup and this fantastic and unforgettable win against Argentina.
“Very proud to have been able to show to the world the progress and a good image of Saudi football. It’s time for me to fly to another horizon but with these memories engraved in me.”
On April 1, 2023, fuel prices will drop between 2% and 9% for the third time in a row, with Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) projected to experience the greatest drop in recent times.
The Institute for Energy Security predicts that the price of LPG would decrease by roughly 9%, while the price of petrol and diesel will fall by between 2% and 5%.
The institute attributes the decline to the cedi’s stability against the dollar and the lowering of finished goods prices on the global market.
“Fuel consumers must expect another round of fuel price drops in the coming days. The imminent price drop is a reflection of happenings on the world fuel market over the past two weeks which shows decline in prices of gasoline [petrol], Liquefied Petroleum Gas and some other finished products”, Nana Amoasi VII, Executive Director of the Institute for Energy Security told the media.
“In the last 14 days, the price of gasoline [petrol] on the world market posted a drop of $21 per metric tonne. Gasoil [diesel] also dropped by roughly 3.6% from the previous price of $813 per metric tonne”, he added.
Nana Amoasi VII furthered that LPG is the product that posted the biggest drop in price over the last two weeks on the world market. The commodity’s price fell by a whopping $95 per metric tonne, about 15% drop.
He concluded that Ghanaians should expect some relieve from the high fuel prices recorded in the past six months, noting “households that rely on LPG will be the most beneficiaries as the commodity may post a hefty drop in prices in the coming days”.
According to reports in the media space, Samuel Osei-Kuffuor has resigned from the Black Stars management committee.
On February 20, 2022, the former Ghanaian international was named to the senior national team’s management committee.
But, the 46-year-old has reportedly submitted to the Ghana Football Association [GFA] his letter of resignation.
The reason for the said resignation is also unknown.
Following the unveiling of Chris Hughton as the new head coach of the Black Stars in Kumasi last week, Kuffour was not found at the SG Mall and was not in attendance at the Baba Yara Stadium when the Black Stars defeat Angola in the first leg of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations [AFCON] qualifiers.
The former Bayern Munich centre-back was a member of the Black Stars squad that featured at the 2006 World Cup in Germany.
Sammy Osei-Kuffuor was a Ghana international for 13 years and won his first cap as a 17-year-old in a game against Sierra Leone on 28 November 1993.
He had previously been part of every national team – junior, youth and Olympic level – and became the full squad’s captain at the age of 23.
According to investigators, the shooter who murdered six people at a Tennessee school on Monday lawfully purchased seven firearms and kept them hidden at home.
According to investigators, the suspect’s parents believed the 28-year-old shouldn’t possess weapons and were unaware that the weapons were hidden in their home.
In the incident at the Covenant School, six individuals were killed, including three nine-year-old children.
According to authorities, the suspect was receiving “doctor’s care for an emotional disorder.”
Officers then disclosed that the goal was not a specific person but rather the school.
Tennessee doesn’t have any laws allowing police to take weapons from dangerous suspects.
Despite the absence of such so-called red-flag laws, police said they would still have sought to have the weapons confiscated if authorities had had any warning that the suspect could have posed a threat.
The pupils killed in the attack were Evelyn Dieckhaus, Hallie Scruggs and William Kinney.
Three adult employees at the privately run Christian school also died: Cynthia Peak, 61, Katherine Koonce, 60, and Mike Hill, 61.
Police have spoken to the parents of the suspect, Audrey Hale, who was killed by police less than 15 minutes after the attack began.
Hale, who identified as transgender and was a former student at the school, was armed with three guns, including a semi-automatic rifle.
The attack took place after the killer conducted surveillance of the premises, drew maps and wrote what police described as a “manifesto”.
A police spokesman said the attacker did not target any person in particular, but did target “this school, this church building”.
Hale’s parents thought the suspect had owned only one gun, but that it had been sold.
They believed the suspect “should not own weapons”, and were unaware the suspect “had been hiding several weapons within the house”, said Nashville Police Chief John Drake on Tuesday.
The weapons were legally purchased from five shops around the city.
The killer “was under care – doctor’s care – for an emotional disorder”, Chief Drake said, without providing further details.
If there had been reports of suicidal or violent tendencies, he added, police would have sought to confiscate the guns.
“But as it stands, we had absolutely no idea who this person was or if [the suspect] even existed,” he said.
Police received the first call about the incident at 10:13 local time (15:13 GMT) on Monday.
The suspect drove to the school in a Honda Fit and got into the building by firing through one of the doors, which were all locked.
Video later released by Nashville police shows the shooter opening fire to shatter glass panes on the front doors, then wandering the school’s deserted corridors – at one point walking past a room labelled “Children’s Ministry”.
In the CCTV footage, the suspect is wearing what appears to be a protective vest and carrying an assault-style rifle in one hand, with a second weapon visible hanging from the left hip.
Image caption,Police Chief John Drake said the suspect may have had firearms training
The suspect fired shots on the ground floor before moving to the building’s second floor.
As police cars arrived, the shooter fired on them from the second floor, striking one vehicle in the windscreen.
“We believe there has been some training to have been able to shoot from a higher level,” Chief Drake said.
He said the suspect had stood away from the glass to avoid being an easy target for police.
One officer was injured by broken glass. Police rushed inside and shot the suspect dead at 10:24, said Chief Drake.
President Joe Biden on Tuesday called for Congress to pass new gun control legislation.
“As a nation, we owe these families more than our prayers,” he said. “We owe them action.”
US Attorney General Merrick Garland was asked during a Senate hearing in Washington DC whether the attack will be investigated as a hate crime targeting Christians.
He said it was too early to say and that agents were still working to identify a motive.
The attack was America’s 131st mass shooting so far this year, according to Gun Violence Archive, a non-profit that tracks gun violence data.
There have been 15 mass shootings at schools or universities in the US since the Columbine High School massacre in 1999, according to a database maintained by the Associated Press.
Ibrahim Tanko, the Black Meteors’ head coach, has stated that he does not know the reason why striker Felix Afena-Gyan declined his team’s invitation to participate in the U23 AFCON qualifiers.
He claims that he had numerous meetings with the player’s agent, who claimed that the forward, who is based in Italy, is not yet ready to compete for the Ghana U23 team.
“I did my list and added Afena. I don’t know why he is not here. I personally spoke to his agent about four times and he told me the boy is not ready,” Coach Ibrahim Tanko told the press in Kumasi.
Coach Ibrahim Tanko wanted Felix Afena-Gyan to be part of his squad for the two games against Angola in the qualifiers for the U23 AFCON.
In his absence, the coach managed to work with the available players to secure qualification thanks to a 2-1 aggregate win.
According to a report by investment bank Goldman Sachs, artificial intelligence (AI) might replace the equivalent of 300 million full-time jobs.
That might result in a quarter of work duties in the US and Europe being replaced, but it might also create new jobs and boost productivity.
Also, it may eventually result in a 7% annual rise in the value of all goods and services produced globally.
The report calls generative AI “a major advancement” since it can produce content that is indistinguishable from human-produced stuff.
The government is keen to promote investment in AI in the UK, which it says will “ultimately drive productivity across the economy”, and has tried to reassure the public about its impact.
“We want to make sure that AI is complementing the way we work in the UK, not disrupting it – making our jobs better, rather than taking them away,” Technology Secretary Michelle Donelan told the Sun.
The report notes AI’s impact will vary across different sectors – 46% of tasks in administrative and 44% in legal professions could be automated but only 6% in construction 4% in maintenance, it says.
According to research cited by the report, 60% of workers are in occupations that did not exist in 1940.
But other research suggests technological change since the 1980s has displaced workers faster than it has created jobs.
And if generative AI is like previous information-technology advances, the report concludes, it could reduce employment in the near term.
The long-term impact of AI, however, was highly uncertain, chief executive of the Resolution Foundation think tank Torsten Bell told BBC News, “so all firm predictions should be taken with a very large pinch of salt”.
“We do not know how the technology will evolve or how firms will integrate it into how they work,” he said.
“That’s not to say that AI won’t disrupt the way we work – but we should focus too on the potential living-standards gains from higher-productivity work and cheaper-to-run services, as well as the risk of falling behind if other firms and economies better adapt to technological change.”
Ibrahim Tanko, the head coach of the Ghana U23 squad, has defended Daniel Afriyie Barnieh after he missed multiple opportunities in Tuesday’s match against the Algeria U23 team.
The captain of the Black Meteors, who began for the team on Tuesday, missed numerous opportunities to score multiple goals and complete the game with a hat trick.
After defeating Algeria 1-0, coach Ibrahim Tanko acknowledged to the media that Daniel Afriyie Barnieh was a wasteful player.
He was quick to add, though, that the attacker’s overall play was solid and benefited the squad.
“I think Barnieh did well though. He spoiled a lot of chances but his general play was good. You can’t just use one game to kill a player, he just moved to Europe. I’m sure he will settle well at his club before the tournament,” Ibrahim Tanko shared.
Courtesy of the 1-0 win over Algeria, Ghana has secured qualification for the 2023 U23 Africa Cup of Nations tournament to be hosted in Morocco.
Ghanaian politician and member of parliament for Ningo-Prampram constituency, Sam George, has criticized US Vice President Kamala Harris for her comments on LGBTQ rights in Ghana.
Speaking at a joint press conference with President Akufo-Addo on Monday, Harris expressed her support for the freedom and equality of all, including the LGBTQ community.
However, Sam George, a key proponent of Ghana’s anti-LGBTQ bill or the Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, criticized Harris’s comments and suggested that she focus on school shootings in the United States rather than LGBTQ issues in Ghana.
“Mrs Kamala Harris should be the last person to come and talk about human rights in Ghana. In the country where she is a vice president, in the United States, a gun woman, a lady in her 20s walked into a school with (inaudible), shot and killed three school children and three adults. Those are the human rights of her country’s citizens that Kamala Harris should be worried about. ….on a daily basis, more people die from gun violence in the US than malaria kills in Africa or in Ghana. That should be of concern to her. Kamala Harris is a woman of colour, if she wasn’t a senator first or wasn’t the vice president of America, she most likely could have possibly been a victim like other Black Americans like George Floyd of white police brutality … Those are the human rights issues Kamala Harris should be worried about because those are what the people who voted for her in America are expecting her to focus on,” he said.
The Bill, which was introduced as a private bill by eight MPs in July 2021, aims to prohibit advocacy of same-sex or homosexual practices in the country and is under review in parliament.
Several local and international human rights advocacy groups have expressed concern about Bill’s existence and its supposed infringement on the rights of LGBTQ+ persons.
President Akufo-Addo, however, has disassociated himself from the bill. Speaking at the same press conference with Harris, he clarified that his administration has no hand in the proposition of the bill.
“The legislation was a legislation that is being proposed as a Private Members Bill. This is not an official legislation of the government, but it is one that is being mooted by a handful of private members” he said.
He added that “the bill is going through the Parliament [and] the Attorney has found it necessary to speak to the committee about it regarding the constitutionality or otherwise, of several of its provisions and the Parliament is dealing with it. “At the end of the process, I will come in, but in the meantime, the Parliament is dealing with it. And then I have no doubt that the Parliament of Ghana will show as it’s done in the past, first of all, its sensitivity to human rights issues as well as to the feelings of our population, and we’ll come out with the responsible response,” he added.
However, several legislators have expressed disappointment in both Harris’s and Akufo-Addo’s responses on the subject, with Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin declaring his support for the bill and suggesting that it will be passed.
“This thing should not be tolerated. That is undemocratic. That someone else would have to dictate as to what is good and what’s bad? It’s unheard of. Because we have decided to devalue ourselves and go begging? Come on. The Bill will be passed. This is a word to the President of the Republic, there is no way you can intervene,” he noted.
The divergent views of Harris and George on the issue of LGBTQ rights in Ghana highlight the complexity of the issue in the country. While international organizations advocate for the protection of LGBTQ+ rights as a fundamental human right obligation, proponents of the anti-LGBTQ bill argue that the promotion of LGBTQ rights is incompatible with Ghanaian culture and family values.
The debate also raises questions about the relationship between Ghana and the United States, particularly with regard to future US aid initiatives in the country. While President Akufo-Addo’s disassociation from the bill may alleviate concerns in this regard, the tension between the two countries on this issue is likely to continue.
As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen whether Ghana’s anti-LGBTQ bill will be successfully passed and how the country’s relationship with the United States will be affected.
LGBTQ+ and Africa
The legislation enjoys broad public support in Uganda
This stance is rooted in cultural and religious beliefs that view homosexuality as a deviation from societal norms.
However, over the years, there has been a growing movement to promote LGBTQ rights, but it has faced fierce opposition from conservative groups.
Uganda’s recent passing of a bill that criminalizes homosexuality is a clear indication of the country’s stance on the issue. The bill imposes life imprisonment for same-sex relations and criminalizes the promotion of LGBTQ rights. This move has been criticized by human rights organizations and Western countries who view it as a violation of fundamental human rights.
On the other hand, Ghana has taken a different approach to the LGBTQ issue. Although homosexuality is illegal in Ghana, the country has not been as aggressive in enforcing the law.
The country’s leaders have also shown some level of tolerance towards the LGBTQ community, with some leaders calling for a dialogue on the issue. However, conservative groups in Ghana have also been vocal in their opposition to the LGBTQ agenda.
The East African LGBTQ community has been under siege, with many facing discrimination and violence.
There have been reports of attacks on LGBTQ individuals and organizations, with some facing imprisonment and harassment.
This situation has forced many LGBTQ people to flee their countries and seek asylum in other countries.
Africa’s stance on the LGBTQ agenda is a complex issue, with cultural and religious beliefs playing a significant role. While some countries have taken a more tolerant approach, others have criminalized homosexuality, leading to a hostile environment for the LGBTQ community.
It is essential to promote dialogue on the issue and work towards promoting tolerance and acceptance for all individuals regardless of their sexual orientation.
Former Minority leader Haruna Iddrisu and his Chief Whip, Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak, have been exempted from the yet-to-be completed list of loyal MPs belonging to the National Democratic Congress.
It is reported that the party’s General Secretary, Fiifi Kwetey, is compiling a list of NDC MPs who adhered to the leadership’s directive to reject the six ministerial appointees presented by President Akufo-Addo.
On March 24, out of the 135 NDC MPs, 116 voted against the approval of K.T. Hammond, 98 opposed Bryan Acheampong’s approval (the least opposition), Stephen Asamoah Boateng garnered 122 “No” votes.
Mohammed Amin Adams received 117 “No” votes, 120 NDC MPs voted against Osei Bonsu Amoah’s approval and 123 rejected the ministerial nomination of Stephen Amoah.
About 39 MPs are said to have betrayed the NDC. Ahead of the secret ballot voting, the Minority pledged to reject the nominees as part of efforts to reduce the size of the government to reflect the current economic challenges.
So far, the identities of 46 loyal NDC MPs have reportedly been released by Mr Fiifi Kwetey via Whatsapp.
Kobla Mensah Wisdom Woyome (South Tongu MP), Gizella Akushika Tetteh-Agbotui (Awutu Senya West MP), Ernest Henry Norgbey (Ashaiman MP), Edward Abambire Bawa (Bongo MP), Yusif Sulemana (Bole Bamboi MP), Richard Kwame Sefe (Anlo MP) and Yao Gomado (Akan MP) are among those viewed as loyalists.
The Tamale South and Asawase MPs’ names are yet to appear on the said list.
It is being speculated on social media that the duo went against the party’s directive out of spite over the change of leadership in Parliament.
It’s public knowledge that this traitors are from Haruna and Muntaka’s camp.. They and their faithful are trying to hit hard the NDC leaders that overthrown them without notice..
At the beginning of the week, it was reported that some ‘traitor NDC list’ circulated on social media. Reacting to the news, former President John Dramani Mahama urged all and sundry to reject the said “fake” list.
“I am urging all NDC supporters to ignore it,” he said while engaging delegates at Kanokoare during his tour of the Ellembelle Constituency in the Western Region on Sunday, March 26, 2023.
Meanwhile, it is believed that Mr Fiifi Kwetey is yet to add about 51 names to the ‘loyal NDC list.’
Reports making round is that General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fiifi Kwetey, has released a list of NDC MPs who did not betray the party during the approval of President Akufo-Addo’s ministerial nominees.
On Friday, March 24, 2023, the Minority failed to halt the approval of six ministerial nominees (K.T. Hammond, Brian Acheampong, Amin Adam, O.B. Amoah, Stephen Amoah and Asamoah Boateng) as directed by the party as part of efforts to reduce the size of the current government.
Out the 135 NDC MPs in Parliament, close to 40 are said to have approved the nominees.
According to sources, Fiifi Kwetey, who together with other party leaders have condemned the recent incident, has provided the identities of 46 NDC MPs who adhered to the party’s directive via Whatsapp.
The said list is however incomplete as it is believed that about 38 NDC MPs betrayed the party. More names of loyal MPs are expected.

An ex-student opened fire at a school in Nashville, Tennessee, in the US, killing three children and three adults.
The Covenant School, a private Christian school with pupils ranging in age from three to eleven, was the scene of the attack.
The three dead students were all nine years old.
According to police, the suspect entered the school through a door and opened fire. Officers found other weapons during a search of their residence.
William Kinney, Evelyn Dieckhaus, and Hallie Scruggs are the three children who were killed.
The adult victims were identified as Cynthia Peak, 61, Mike Hill, 61, and Katherine Koonce, 60.
The suspect has been identified as 28-year-old Audrey Hale, officers said.
There has been some confusion about Hale’s gender identity – with police initially describing the attacker as a woman, and later saying that Hale identified as transgender.
A police spokesperson told Washington Post that Hale “is a biological woman who, on a social media profile, used male pronouns”.
The shooter was armed with three guns, including a semi-automatic rifle, and was shot dead by police.
They had left a manifesto and had drawn a detailed map of the school, with entry points. Police are now studying those documents.
Hale, who had no criminal record, was a former student at the school and officers said they believe “resentment” may have been a motive.

Police received the first call about the incident at 10:13 local time (15:13 GMT) on Monday.
The suspect drove to the school and got in by firing through one of the school doors, which were all locked.
Video later released by Nashville police show Hale using a gun to gain entry by shattering glass panes on the front doors, then wandering the school’s deserted corridors – at one point walking past a room labelled “Children’s Ministry”.
In the CCTV footage, Hale is wearing what looks like a protective vest and carrying an assault-style rifle in one hand, with a second, similar weapon also visible hanging from the left hip.
Hale fired shots on the ground floor before moving to the upper floor.
As police cars arrived, Hale fired on them, striking one in the windscreen, said police.
One officer was injured by broken glass. Police rushed inside and shot the suspect dead at 10:27.
A search of a nearby parked car led officers to “firmly believe” that Hale was a former student of the school, said police.
Police spoke with the attacker’s father during a search of a nearby home that was listed as the shooter’s address.
Nashville Police Chief John Drake said investigators there found a manifesto and “a map of how all of this was going to play out”, including entry and exit points at the school building.
He also said the shooter had conducted surveillance while planning the attack.
In a search of the shooter’s home, more weapons were recovered, in addition to the ones used in the attack, including a sawed-off shotgun and a second shotgun.
Hale’s mother, Norma Hale, told ABC News: “It is very, very difficult right now”, before asking for privacy.
The Presbyterian-affiliated Covenant School is located in the upmarket Green Hills neighbourhood, south of central Nashville.
In a statement, the school said “our community is heartbroken”.
“We are grieving tremendous loss and are in shock coming out of the terror that shattered our school and church.”
The mother of one pupil said her son had been left traumatised. “I think he’s doing better now that he knows that the shooter is dead,” Shaundelle Brooks told BBC News.
“These are conversations we shouldn’t be having,” she added. “We’re failing our children.”
Hours after the shooting, a memorial service for the victims was held at the nearby Woodmont Christian Church.
Senior minister Clay Stauffer tearfully said that Evelyn Dieckhaus’s sister, who is 11, had plans to be baptised in a few weeks, according to local outlet the Tennessean.

President Joe Biden called the shooting a “family’s worst nightmare”.
“We have to do more to stop gun violence,” he said, once again urging Congress to pass tougher gun control laws. “It is ripping our communities apart, and ripping at the very soul of this nation.”
The attack was America’s 129th mass shooting of 2023, according to Gun Violence Archive, a non-profit that tracks gun violence data.
According to data compiled by Education Week, there have been 12 school shootings that have resulted in deaths or injuries in the US this year up until the end of last week.
Vice President of the United States of America, Kamala Harris, delivered a public lecture at Black Star Square.
The Vice President has spoken about women empowerment since her arrival in Ghana. She also says US will invest in Africa.
She will later visit Cape Coast Castle, the place in Ghana where shackled Africans were held in squalid dungeons before being shipped off into slavery in the U.S. and elsewhere.
In honor of US Vice President Kamala Harris, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo threw a state banquet on Monday evening.
On March 26, 2023, the US Vice President flew into Ghana on a three-day state visit. After a quick ceremony at the Kotoka International Airport, she was welcomed by Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia.
On March 27, President Akufo-Addo hosted a dinner for the US Vice President and her husband, Douglas Emhoff, as part of their visit.
Several well-known Ghanaians from the corporate, political, sporting, and entertainment worlds attended the state banquet.
Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, National Security and Defence Ministers, Kan Dapaah and Dominic Nitiwul, as well as Attorney-General Godfred Dame were present.
Among the notable personalities were Osei Kwame Despite, Ernest Ofori Sarpong, Asamoah Gyan, and Zoomlion CEO Joseph Siaw Agyapong.
Others included Church of Pentecost Chairman Apostle Eric Nyamekye, Electoral Commission Chairperson Jean Mensa, and former MP for Jomoro Samia Nkrumah.
Music stars Amakye Dede, Wiyaala, and Efya were also present to deliver impressive performances on the night.
Thomas Partey did not participate against Angola in Luanda due to precautionry measures, according to Black Stars head coach Chris Hughton.
With Andre Ayew’s absence from the team, the midfielder was supposed to lead Ghana in the away leg of their Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match against Angola.
For many Ghanaians, Hughton’s decision to omit the Arsenal midfielder from the starting lineup came as a surprise.
Partey was not enlisted and had no impact as the Black Stars rallied from a goal down to earn a point at a time when the team also appeared to need a leader on the field.
Speaking after the game, Hughton revealed the rationale behind Partey’s no show against the Palencas Negras.
“Thomas [Partey] has some small injury issues and we felt it was too big of a risk to start him,” told the media.
Partey put out arguably one of his best performances for the Black Stars in the 1-0 win over Angola at the Baba Yara Stadium on Thursday, March 24.
The draw in Luanda now means Ghana maintain their lead at the top of Group E with just a point separating them and the Central African Republic.
A lovely goal from Benjamin Pavard gave World Cup champions France a slim advantage in Dublin’s Euro 2024 qualifying match, making the Republic of Ireland pay for one crucial mistake.
Together with Friday’s 4-0 thrashing of the Netherlands, Pavard’s 50th-minute contribution gave Group B victory by a score of 1-0. Before to that, he had intercepted Josh Cullen’s foolish pass over the edge of his own box.
Yet in a thrilling conclusion, Mike Maignan’s outstanding stop in the 90th minute prevented Nathan Collins from tying the score.
The world’s third-ranked side were made to work desperately hard for the points by an Ireland team sitting 48th in FIFA’s table two years to the day since they suffered the humiliation of a 1-0 World Cup qualifying defeat by Luxembourg at the Aviva Stadium.
France dominated possession for much of the game, but were unable to trouble keeper Gavin Bazunu until Cullen’s rare slip let Pavard in as Stephen Kenny’s men, who handled superstar Kylian Mbappe well, defended diligently and tried to hit them on the break.
Ireland’s fate in this campaign was never likely to be decided on their results against France, and their trip to Greece in June before Gibraltar head for the Aviva will be far more indicative, but Kenny will take heart from the way his young team committed to his game-plan in the face of the sternest of tests.
With wide frontmen Chiedozie Ogbene and Jason Knight dropping in when they were out of possession, the home side were compact, although they were breached with nine minutes gone when Randal Kolo Muani was played in over the top and rounded Bazunu, only for his back-heeled pass to Olivier Giroud as he was driven wide to be cut out by Collins.
The Republic were squeezed ever deeper as France turned the screw with Antoine Griezmann orchestrating, and it took a good 16th-minute block by John Egan to keep Mbappe at bay.
With what little share of the ball they were afforded, Ireland did their best to fulfil Kenny’s instructions to take risks without ever really threatening to pierce the French defence, but they needed Bazunu to spring from his line to prevent any damage after Griezmann’s 24th-minute corner had ricocheted across his six-yard box.
Griezmann instinctively stabbed wide as he attempted to turn Theo Hernandez’s 32nd-minute drive past Bazunu and then missed the target with a header from Pavard’s cross as French frustration mounted.
In the event, a team which had scored three times inside the opening 21 minutes against the Dutch left the pitch at half-time locked in a stalemate having been unable to break down a stubborn and disciplined Irish rearguard.
However, the home side faltered within five minutes of the restart to hand the visitors the lead.
Cullen intercepted Adrien Rabiot’s misplaced pass on the edge of his own penalty area, but then played the ball square, where Pavard pounced before smashing a shot past the helpless Bazunu off the underside of the crossbar.
It might have been 2-0 had Evan Ferguson in the defensive wall not got his head to Griezmann’s 55th-minute free-kick, although the Atletico Madrid star turned up on the edge of his box to block Knight’s goal-bound strike after Ogbene had burst clear down the right three minutes later.
Moussa Diaby tested Bazunu’s resolve with a swerving 69th-minute effort and the Southampton keeper repelled Rabiot’s attempt from distance six minutes later, but Molumby and substitutes James McClean and Alan Browne all went close to an equaliser in a tense conclusion.
But for Maignan, who had seconds earlier clawed the ball from underneath his crossbar, Collins would have snatched a famous draw at the death.
According to testimony given in court in Utah, the ski accident victim who is suing Gwyneth Paltrow heard a “blood-curdling scream” just prior to the collision.
The sound, according to Terry Sanderson, 76, was “like someone was out of control,” and he had never been smacked so hard while skiing.
He is suing for $300,000 (£245,000) in damages after blaming the actress for the 2016 collision.
Ms. Paltrow, 50, countersued for $1 and her legal expenses and has denied any wrongdoing.
The actress was not a careless skier, a ski instructor informed the jury on Monday.
Testifying on Friday, Ms Paltrow had said the incident in Park City, Utah, left her with a sore knee and she got a massage afterwards.
On Monday, Mr Sanderson described hearing the scream in the moments before the collision, saying: “It was like somebody was out of control and going to hit a tree and was going to die.”
He said he had never been struck so hard while skiing, describing the crash as a “serious, serious smack”.
Mr Sanderson also told the court he had suffered physical, mental and emotional injuries from the accident, describing himself being a “self-imposed recluse” since.
He said these medical issues had changed his relationships with his children, as well as contributing to his split from his partner and losing friends.
A lawyer for Terry Sanderson told the jury last week that the Hollywood actress’s “reckless” actions had caused the collision on the slopes of Deer Valley ski resort.
Describing the aftermath, Mr Sanderson told the court he remembered hearing a “very angry” male voice accusing him of being at fault for the collision, which was later said to be that of Deer Valley ski instructor Eric Christiansen.
Mr Sanderson said the man had been “insistent” he was the “bad guy” in the situation and had been trying to bully him.
In his own testimony, Mr Christiansen said it was “ridiculous” to claim he had been hostile towards Mr Sanderson, given instructors who get into confrontations with guests “don’t last” at the ski resort.
He told the jury Ms Paltrow was not a “reckless” or “dangerous” skier and was skilled at “making short radius turns”.
Mr Christiansen, who was teaching Ms Paltrow’s son Moses on the day, said that neither she nor Mr Sanderson had asked for assistance from a ski patrol after the incident.
He said if anyone had asked for help “that would have changed everything”, as when people are hurt ski patrol must be called to take statements and assess the extent of the injuries.
Mr Christiansen also denied there had been a “cover-up” to protect the actress. The trial continues.
According to the German defense ministry, Germany has shipped its first cargo of Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine.
After receiving training to operate them, 18 state-of-the-art main battle tanks were sent to Ukraine.
Boris Pistorius, the defence minister, expressed his confidence that the tanks might “make a major contribution” on the front lines of the conflict.
According to reports from Ukraine, Challenger 2 tanks have also arrived.
For months, Ukraine has demanded more advanced vehicles and weaponry to aid in defending against the Russian invasion.
The Ukrainian government is yet to comment on the arrival of the Leopard 2s, but they have confirmed the arrival of the first UK-made Challenger 2 tanks.
Around 2,000 Leopard 2s, widely regarded as being among the best main battle tanks produced by Nato countries, are in use by European countries.
Germany agreed to supply the tanks to Ukraine in January, after being initially reluctant to do so – or even to permit other countries from sending their own.
Under German law, Berlin must approve Leopard 2s being re-exported by any country.
German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius said the tanks “have made it into the hands of our Ukrainian friends as promised and on time”.
The German army has trained Ukrainian tank crews to use the advanced A6 variant of the Leopard 2 over the past several weeks.
They have been specifically designed to compete with the Russian T-90 main battle tank and is considered to be easier to maintain and more fuel-efficient than most other Western tanks.
On top of the Leopard 2s, Germany has also sent Ukraine two specialist tank-recovery vehicles and 40 Marder infantry fighting vehicles.
Meanwhile, Challenger 2 tanks from the UK “are in Ukraine already”, defence ministry spokeswoman Iryna Zolotar told AFP news agency.
Posting a picture of a Challenger 2 alongside other Western-made military vehicles on his Facebook page, Defence Minister Oleksii Reznikov described the British vehicle as a work of military art.
The UK Ministry of Defence declined to comment but earlier confirmed Ukrainian tank crews training in Britain had returned home after completing their training with the tanks.
Marcus Bettinelli pledged his future to the Premier League team, Chelsea.
The goalkeeper signed a contract extension that would keep him with the Blues through 2026.
After moving to Chelsea from West London rivals Fulham in 2021, Bettinelli has primarily been used as a backup option to Kepa Arrizabalaga and Edouard Mendy.
The 30-year-old made just one competitive appearance for the Blues last season, which came in the FA Cup match against Chesterfield, which they easily won 5-1.
He is still excited to stay by Graham Potter’s side.
He told the club’s website: “It is a privilege to be at a club like Chelsea, one of the biggest clubs in the world.
“A couple of years ago when I signed, I was delighted to be here, delighted to sign.
“To be here now and see the club going through this transition and seeing what we are developing, it is amazing to be a part of and I am buzzing to be here for an extra couple of years.”
Chelsea return to Premier League action after the international break when they host Aston Villa at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.
The Blues are 10th in the table with 11 games remaining, and 11 points shy of fourth-placed Tottenham.

Elon Musk, the CEO of Twitter, has revealed changes to the social media platform’s premium Twitter Blue service.
Only verified subscribers will be able to vote in polls and recommend posts to other users starting on April 15.
According to the guideline, tweets from non-paying accounts will not appear in the stream labeled “For you.”
The company announced last week that it would delete the verified status from some “legacy” accounts that were created before Mr. Musk acquired the business.
Blue-tick verification is presently $7 (£5.70) per month, and it also gives users access to more features.
Mr Musk said the changes were “the only realistic way to address advanced AI bot swarms taking over. It is otherwise a hopeless losing battle.”
“Voting in polls will require verification for same reason,” he added.
In an earlier post, Mr Musk said paid verification significantly increases the cost of using bots and makes it easier to identify them.
However, the move has been criticised by some social media users.
Elon Musk’s new policy will now essentially preclude non-paying users from taking part in one of those streams.
It means unverified Twitter users will be far less likely to have their tweets liked or retweeted.
One of the largest manufacturers of consumer goods, Unilever Nigeria Plc, has said that it will stop producing some of its well-known brands, including Omo and Lux.
The manufacturer says it will leave the Home Care and Skin Cleansing categories, which will have an impact on the aforementioned brands.
Sunlight, Dove Beauty Bar, Lux soap, Pepsodent toothpaste, vaseline, Lifebuoy, and Rexona products are just a few of the numerous names that may be impacted.
In a statement sent to the capital market, Unilever informed shareholders that: “The Company will make changes to its business model in order to accelerate growth and sustain profitability while enhancing its ability to meet consumer needs.”
“The 100-year-old consumer goods company will repurpose its portfolio while putting in place measures to make the business more efficient and future fit.”
These changes will reposition the Company to better meet the needs of consumers, shareholders, and employees.
This will involve: Repurposing the portfolio by exiting the Home Care and Skin Cleansing categories to concentrate on higher growth opportunities. Unilever also noted that the new model would reduce exposure to devaluation and currency liquidity, Punch reports.
It also believed offloading its home care and skin cleansing portfolios would enable the management to “concentrate on higher growth opportunities.”
The statement continues: “Strengthening business operations with measures to digitize and simplify processes; and Focusing more on business continuity measures that reduce exposure to devaluation and currency liquidity in our business model.
“The exit of these two categories over 2023 will boost the vision to make Unilever Nigeria great, building on the impressive progress made in other key aspects of the business, and is envisaged to result in overall improvement in profitability, growth and a more sustainable Unilever Nigeria plc. First it was the US secretary of state who visited Africa, then the vice president, and later in the year the president is anticipated to go.
This flurry of trips by senior US government officials reflects a growing understanding that the country has to strengthen its ties to Africa.
All of this occurs in the face of escalating opposition from other major world powers, particularly China and Russia.
Vice-President Kamala Harris started her nine-day trip in Ghana on Sunday, where she was greeted by drummers and dancers at Kotoka International Airport. She will later go to Tanzania and Zambia.
Ghana, with its focus on strengthening ties with the African diaspora as well as a record of several peaceful democratic transfers of power, provides an ideal launchpad for Ms Harris.
Her trip, according to an official statement, is intended to “build on” December’s US-Africa summit in Washington where President Joe Biden said the US was “all in on Africa’s future”.
But it is that future, boosted by a youthful and growing population as well as the continent’s immense natural resources, that have attracted a lot of other powerful nations vying for influence.
While Secretary of State Anthony Blinken’s recent visit to Ethiopia and Niger focused on these countries’ security challenges, the vice-president’s tour will take her to nations facing serious economic problems.
Ghana’s once-thriving economy is going through its most difficult financial crisis in decades.
The country is seeking to restructure its debt amid surging inflation of over 50%. Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta has just been in Beijing leading negotiations with the Chinese government.
“So far, very positive and encouraging meetings in China,” the finance minister tweeted as he expressed optimism that it would secure external assurances “very soon”.
It needs the assurances to unlock financial support from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
It is not clear what, if any help, Ms Harris can offer, but it will be under pressure to act like a willing partner in the wake of Mr Ofori-Atta’s China visit.
‘US a friend – like China and Russia’
Economist and professor of finance at the University of Ghana, Godfred Alufar Bokpin, does not think the visit will deliver “an immediate dividend” to help alleviate the country’s financial woes.
“Having China on board is complicated,” he said, while noting that Ms Harris’ visit was “a very important” one for Ghana as it “elevates our relationship with the US to another level”.
He told the BBC the interest the US is showing in the country and its debt crisis “is good” but he is worried about what he described as “unfavourable terms of trade” with creditor nations.
Image caption,First Lady Jill Biden, seen here in Namibia in February, was another US dignitary to have recently visited the continent
Zambia finds itself in a similar position to Ghana.
The copper-rich nation became the first African country to default on its debt when the Covid pandemic hit.
It is in prolonged discussions with China to restructure its debt and has also sought financial support from the IMF.
The Reuters news agency quotes a senior US official as saying Ms Harris “would discuss the best ways for the international community to address debt challenges faced by Ghana and Zambia”.
Like Prof Bokpin, Zambian analyst Dr Sishuwa Sishuwa thinks China holds more influence when it comes to restructuring debt. But the US wants to be seen as the more reliable partner.
There is a growing sentiment on the continent that Africa should have a free choice in its relationships with the rest of the world.
“Zambia sees the United States in the same way as it sees China and Russia – a friend,” Dr Sishuwa told the BBC.
“When a country turns to China, or Russia, or the US for support, this should not be seen as snubbing one major power bloc or the other.”
He said attempts to seek exclusive relationships with African countries may be counterproductive and unsustainable.
This echoed South African President Cyril Ramaphosa’s comments during a visit to Washington last year when he said: “We should not be told by anyone who we associate with.”
Senior US officials have told the BBC it is not their intention to tell African countries who they can be friends with.
The US has however been keen to emphasise its focus on democracy in its relationships with African countries, something the vice-president is also expected to discuss during her visit.
President Hakainde Hichilema of Zambia is due to co-host a virtual Summit for Democracy, along with four other heads of state including President Biden, shortly before receiving Ms Harris in the country.
It is one of the values, along with human rights and good governance, that the US government says underpins its relationships with the continent – and sets it apart from China and Russia.
Scepticism in Africa
China has a non-interference policy in countries’ internal political affairs – something that has smoothed its engagement with autocratic leaders.
And Russia’s presence in African countries that have experienced coups recently – Burkina Faso and Mali – has led to a souring of relations between them and the West, especially France, the former colonial power which had maintained close ties to both countries.
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has no doubt given Western nations an added sense of urgency in winning over more African countries. UN votes to condemn it divided African nations which accounted for half of all abstentions, including Tanzania which is also on Ms Harris’ itinerary.
Image caption,Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu Hassan first met Vice-President Harris in Washington nearly a year ago
The US vice-president – the first woman to hold that position – will meet President Samia Suluhu Hassan, her country’s first female head of state.
This shared experience of being pioneering women is creating a buzz in Tanzania.
Many are also touting the visit as an endorsement of the progress the country is making and its growing visibility on the global map.
It was not that long ago that Tanzania was something of an outcast under the presidency of John Magufuli, who was seen as having autocratic tendencies, curtailing the activities of the opposition and independent media.
Ms Harris is the most senior US official from the Biden administration to visit Africa and the fifth since December’s US-Africa summit.
Others have been the Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, US ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield, First Lady Jill Biden and Mr Blinken.
But with the renewed interest comes a demand from the continent to be treated fairly.
Ghana’s Prof Bokpin said there was a level of scepticism about the heightened interest in Africa.
“There’s a belief that a new Scramble for Africa is in play,” referring to the subdivision of the continent by European nations in the late 19th Century which led to decades of colonialism and exploitation.
“This engagement needs to emphasise mutual respect,” he added.
Vice President of the United States of America, Kamala Harris, has indirectly condemned the anti-LGBTQ bill formally known as Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill currently before Parliament.
In a joint presser with President Akufo-Addo on Monday, the US Vice President noted that she supports freedom and the equality of all including the LGBTQ community, a position the anti-LGBTQ does not support.
According to Kamala Harris, LGBTQ rights is human rights per her understanding and belief.
In response to a question posed by a New York Times journalist on the current bill, she said: “A great deal of my work has been on human right issues and equality across board including the LGBTQ community. I believe strongly in the supporting the freedom and providing equality on all people and that all people be treated equally. I will also say that this is an issue I consider to be a human rights issue and that will not change.”
The Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill was introduced in July 2021 in Parliament by eight MPs as a private bill.
The eight are Sam Nartey George (MP, Ningo-Prampram), Emmanuel Bedzrah (MP, Ho West) Della Adjoa Sowah (MP, Kpando), John Ntim Fordjour (MP, Assin South), Alhassan Sayibu Suhuyini (MP, Tamale North), Helen Adjoa Ntoso (MP, Krachi West), Rita Naa Odoley Sowah (MP, La Dadekotopon) and Rockson Nelson Dafeamekpor (MP, South Dayi).
It has been close to two years and Parliament is still considering the Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values 2021 which will amongst other things, prohibit advocacy of same-sex or homosexual practices in the Country.
International organizations have raised concerns that the Bill could infringe on the rights of LGBTQ+ persons who are a minority group in the country.
United States Ambassador to Ghana, Virginia Palmer has advised Ghanaians and their representatives in Parliament to respect international obligations and Domestic laws which centre on the need to protect the rights of all persons, irrespective of their sexual orientation.
MP for Ningo-Prampram, Sam Nartey George, believes otherwise. He says LGBTQ rights does not qualify as human rights.
Speaker Alban Bagbin, on the matter, has indicated that “the sexual rights and human values Bill that is being handled by the committee will definitely be passed before the next elections.”
The seat of government, Jubilee House, has been accused of using LGBTQ colours as part of ways to welcome US Vice President Kamala Harris.
The US Vice President touched down at the Kotoka International Airport in Accra on Sunday afternoon, March 26, 2023.

Viral images show the Jubilee House in a variety of colours including; red, yellow, green, white and violet. This has been read by some Ghanaians on social media as government publicly accepting LGBTQ.
According to one Eric Adjei during an interview on UTV, the president has embraced homosexuality with this action.
Per reports, the images are colours of the United States of America and Ghana. Colours of the LGBTQ community are red, orange, yellow, green, turquoise, indigo and violet.
Ghana’s colours are red, gold, green and black, while the US use red, white and blue.
Jubilee House and the LGBTQ colours
In response to the matter, Rightify Ghana noted that the colours on the Jubilee House are not those of the LGBTQ community.
🚨 Misinformation: Political and anti-LGBTQ individuals target community with misleading info
Following the USA VP, Kamala Harris, visit to Ghana, social media images show the Jubilee House illuminated with Ghana 🇬🇭 and USA 🇺🇸 colours, but anti-LGBTQI persons say it’s 🏳️🌈 colours pic.twitter.com/owBuwooVdt
It is believed that the fusion of some colours may have caused this confusion. The violet colour is formed by mixing red and blue, which are primary colours.
Vice President of the United States of America, Kamala Harris, will meet President Akufo-Addo today at the Jubilee House for bilateral talks.
A number of ministers including Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, Lands Minister, Samuel Abu Jinapor, are also present at the Jubilee House.
Vice President Kamala Harris touched down in Ghana on Sunday afternoon, March 26, 2023, to begin her 9-day trip to Africa.
On Tuesday, the US Vice President will deliver a speech to a young audience and visit the Cape Coast slave castle to speak about the brutality of slavery and the African Diaspora.
On Wednesday, she will meet with women entrepreneurs in Accra to discuss the economic empowerment of women.
From Accra, her next stop will be Tanzania and Zambia.
Despite a police ban, Kenyan opposition leader Raila Odinga said protests against PRairesident William Ruto’s administration over the high cost of living would proceed as planned.
Hours after accusing Vice President Rigathi Gachagua of “coordinating a campaign of mayhem” against the anticipated demonstrations, Odinga called for protests on Monday and Thursday in a tweet.
Last week, violent protests broke out in Nairobi and other places, resulting in the death of one person. More than 200 persons were detained by the police, including members of both chambers of parliament who are affiliated with Odinga’s One Kenya Coalition Party.
The protests organized by Odinga are now prohibited, according to Kenya’s police chief, who also noted that such actions are still illegal.
“We have been restraining ourselves. We cannot do that any more,” Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome told reporters at a media briefing. “We are ready as the police force to maintain peace.”
During last week’s protests, police used tear gas and water cannon, including at Odinga’s convoy. Nairobi’s central business district had a heavy police presence before Monday’s planned rallies.
Odinga, 78, has called for indefinite twice-weekly protests, citing the high cost of staples such as maize flour, which has kept inflation high. He also has accused Ruto of cheating in last year’s presidential election.
Last week’s Indian Wells Open champion Elena Rybakina has extended her winning streak to 10 matches after defeating Paula Badosa 3-6 7-5 6-3 in Saturday’s Miami Open third round.
Kazakhstan’s Rybakina, who is also the reigning Wimbledon Champion and Australian Open finalist, got the better of Badosa for the second time during her current run, also eliminating her from Indian Wells.
The 23-year-old has to be considered one of the favourites to go all the way, having knocked off world number one Iga Swiatek and world number two Aryna Sabalenka to lift the trophy in California.
Rybakina will meet Belgium’s Elise Mertens in the fourth round after she beat Croatia’s Petra Martic 6-4 6-3.
Meanwhile, the biggest upset of the day was delivered by Russia’s Anastasia Potapova, bouncing sixth seed Coco Gauff 6-7 (8-10) 7-5 6-2.
Potapova, who has never won a tournament above the WTA 250 level, will face China’s Zheng Qinwen for a spot in the quarter-finals after her three-hour 5-7 7-6 (7-5) 6-3 triumph over Liudmila Samsonova.
Latvia’s Jelena Ostapenko, the 24th seed, eliminated Brazilian 13th seed Beatriz Haddad Maia 6-2 4-6 6-3, while 20th seed Magda Linette of Poland knocked out Belarusian 14th seed Victoria Azarenka 7-6 (7-3) 2-6 6-4.
Unseeded American Clare Liu went down 4-6 7-5 6-4 against Italy’s Martina Trevisan, but third seed Jessica Pegula will continue to fly the flag for the United States after advancing 6-1 7-6 (7-0) in her all-American showdown with Danielle Collins.
Black Stars head coach, Chris Hughton, has pledged to ensure that his side leaves no stone unturned when it comes to defense and attack in the return leg against Angola.
Sharing his take ahead of Monday’s game that takes place in Luanda, he said “the approach is that we are up against a good team. I can say something quite obvious, that we will have to defend well and we will have to attack well.
For Hughton, it is important that there is a balance.
“We have to make sure that we are compact as team – this is for sure, because they are a good quality and they a very technical team. But we are here to win the game and you can’t win the game unless you give yourself an opportunity to attack and to attack well. We have to be careful how we do this.”
“If the game becomes too open, if it becomes end to end then of course it can be for any team so we have to have a strategy going into the game as we would in any game,” he added.
According to him, the Palancas Negras will fall on the support from their supporters, however, that would not matter much since “we are a good team.”
“We managed to get the victory a few days ago and it’s something we want to build on,” he added.
Ghana beat Angola by a goal when they clashed at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi last Thursday.
Ghana Black Stars and Angola face off today in Luanda at 4pm for the Africa Cup of Nations Group E clash.
The Palancas Negras came up against the Black Stars last Thursday at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium and lost by a goal at the eleventh hour.
Chris Hughton’s side which arrived in Luanda on Saturday night has recorded some injuries. Andre Ayew couldn’t make the trip as he has been ruled out due to injury.
Other players who didn’t make the trip include Alexander Djiku, Mohammed Salisu and Denis Odoi.
The Black Stars head coach travelled with 21 players.
Meanwhile, Nicholas Opoku has joined the Black Stars in Luanda for today’s game.
The Amiens defender has been drafted in to provide options for Chris Hughton following the absence of Salisu Mohammed and Alexander Djiku.
Nicholas made his Black Stars debut in July 2017, and has gone on to play for Ghana 13 times and scored one goal. He is expected to provide competition for Joseph Aidoo and Daniel Amartey who are the only recognized central defenders in the team.
On Sunday, Russia defeated Iraq 2-0 in their first home match since the former’s invasion of Ukraine.
FIFA and UEFA, the regional and international governing organizations of football, declared in February 2022 that Russia’s national and club teams would be barred from participating in their leagues.
Since then, Russia has played friendlies against Iran, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan, but they haven’t played at home since November 2021.
Early in the second half versus Iran at the Gazprom Arena, Anton Miranchuk gave Russia the lead, and shortly before the hour, Sergey Pinyaev scored a second.
The Champions League final was scheduled to take place in Saint Petersburg last year, but due to Russia’s military actions, it was moved to the Parc des Princes in Paris.
Italy won 2-0 at Malta to earn their first victory in Euro 2024 qualifying, and Mateo Retegui scored once more.
Argentina-born Retegui scored in his international debut against England on Thursday, and three days later he did it again with a straightforward 15th-minute goal.
Twelve minutes later, Matthew Guillaumier scored an own goal, giving Roberto Mancini’s team complete dominance at Ta’ Qali National Stadium. Malta hardly ever threatened an answer.
Italy now trails Group C’s early leaders England by three points after their victory over Ukraine earlier on Sunday.
Malta almost grabbed an unlikely fifth-minute lead but captain Gianluigi Donnarumma rescued Italy with a fine stop against Alexander Satariano when one-on-one.
That missed chance proved pivotal as an unmarked Retegui headed home from Sandro Tonali’s corner soon after, before Wilfried Gnonto limped off injured.
Guillaumier turned into his own net from Emerson’s inviting cross as Italy furthered their lead, though Henry Bonello denied substitute Vincenzo Grifo to keep the scoreline respectable at half-time.
A frantic scramble inside the Italy area offered Mancini’s visitors a rare second-half scare before Bonello thwarted a fizzing Bryan Cristante attempt.
Gianluca Scamacca’s inventive acrobatic effort forced another smart Bonello save as Italy cruised to their first win on the road to Germany 2024.
England maintained their winning streak against Ukraine with a stunning goal from Bukayo Saka after Harry Kane extended his goal-scoring streak.
The remarkable 2-1 victory over Euro 2020 champions Italy on Thursday, according to Gareth Southgate, could only be viewed as a magnificent result if it was followed up by a victory at Wembley.
In their first home game since making it to the World Cup quarterfinals, England did not let their fans down as Kane and Saka scored late in the first half to secure a 2-0 victory over Ukraine.
It was the perfect return from their toughest-looking Euro 2024 double-header, meaning Southgate’s side are already well placed to progress from a group completed by North Macedonia and Malta.
England are expected to get maximum points against those nations in June, when Kane could add a flurry to his national team scoring record that stands at 55 after his first-half opener.
The skipper, who was presented with a commemorative golden boot for his historic strike in Naples, fired in after meeting a fine cross by Saka, who went onto score a superb effort three minutes later.
The 21-year-old’s fantastic 20-yard curler was his eighth international goal and all but ended this Group C clash a contest.
Given England’s struggles after half-time in Italy and an already-depleted squad being further diminished by Phil Foden needing appendix surgery on Sunday morning, Southgate will not mind the largely forgettable second half here.
Ahead of the game both sets of players posed with a Ukrainian flag that read ‘peace’ in a show of solidarity as the country continues to fight invading Russia.
More than 1,000 displaced Ukrainians and their host families were invited to the match as special guests of the Football Association.
The 4,200-strong away contingent were in fine voice from the outset but there was a collective early gasp when Kane rose to his feet claiming for a penalty following a clumsy Oleksandr Svatok challenge.
In the Euro 2024 qualifying match, Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice as Portugal cruised to a 6-0 victory away at Luxembourg.
Ronaldo scored first, and subsequent goals from Joao Felix and Bernardo Silva made it 3-0 within of 18 minutes. Ronaldo then added another goal shortly after the halfway point.
Otavio and Rafael Leao, who came on as substitutes in the second half of Portugal’s 4-0 victory over Liechtenstein to begin their qualification campaign and the tenure of new head coach Roberto Martinez, sealed another easy victory for Portugal.
After two games, they are two points ahead of Slovakia in second place in Group J thanks to their victory over Bosnia-Herzegovina.
Portugal took the lead in the ninth minute when a ball to the far post from Bruno Fernandes was headed back across goal by Nuno Mendes, giving Ronaldo a simple tap-in from close range.
The advantage was doubled just six minutes later, as this time Silva’s inswinging ball from the right was nodded across Luxembourg goalkeeper Anthony Moris and into the corner of the net by Joao Felix.
Silva got on the end of a long pass from Joao Palhinha to head in the third, while Ronaldo grabbed his second and Portugal’s fourth in the 31st minute when Fernandes played him through on goal, with the Al Nassr striker placing his left-foot shot low to Moris’ right.
Portugal had another in the 77th minute when Leao and Otavio combined, with the latter heading home the Milan attacker’s cross from the left.
Leao saw a late penalty saved by Moris after winning it himself, but made up for it shortly after when his run inside from the left ended with a composed finish.
By mutual consent, Antonio Conte has left Tottenham following his scathing criticism of the team’s “selfish” players.
Ryan Mason will serve as his assistant head coach while Cristian Stellini assumes control for the remainder of the campaign, according to Spurs.
Chairman Daniel Levy said: “We have 10 Premier League games remaining and we have a fight on our hands for a Champions League place. We all need to pull together.
“Everyone has to step up to ensure the highest possible finish for our club and amazing, loyal supporters.”
An official statement added: “We achieved Champions League qualification in Antonio’s first season.
“We thank Antonio for his contribution and wish him well for the future.”
Spurs crashed out of the Champions League and FA Cup in the space of a week earlier this month and dropped more points in the race for fourth place at Southampton last weekend.
After finding themselves 3-1 up at St Mary’s with 13 minutes to go, they conceded twice to leave with just a point, sparking Conte’s post-match rant.
The fiery coach pointed the finger at the players and the club’s hierarchy, stating that nothing would change even if he was sacked.
Antonio Conte was left fuming after Tottenham’s collapse at Southampton
He said: “We are not a team. We are 11 players that go on the pitch. I see selfish players, players that don’t want to help each other and don’t put their heart.
“Until now I try to hide the situation but not any more.
“Here’s always the same, every season. The club has the responsibility for the transfer market, the coach has responsibility. But the players, where are the players?
“They are used to it here at Tottenham. They don’t play for something important. They don’t want to play under pressure, under stress. It is easy in this way.
“Tottenham’s story is this for 20 years. There’s the owner but they never won something.”
A Premier League and FA Cup winner with Chelsea, 53-year-old Conte had been coy about his future and previously hinted he would like to return to Italy to spend more time with his family.
Spurs are now likely to commence another rebuilding project with a new manager at the helm this summer.
It remains to be seen who that may be but former boss Mauricio Pochettino and ex-Bayern Munich head coach Julian Nagelsmann are among the favourites to take charge.
The Ghana Education Service (GES) has refuted claims that it is demanding money from individuals who are hoping to be recruited into the Service.
According to the GES, its attention has been drawn to dubious actions against unsuspecting Nation Builders Corp (NABCO) beneficiaries seeking recruitment into the Service.
The GES has noted that “it is not the practice of the Service to take money from applicants before recruiting them” hence disassociates itself from such allegations.
“These complaints are very disturbing and bring the image of the Service to disrepute.”
“We wish to emphasize that the Service has not contracted any individual to collect any money on its behalf in connection with recruitment,” the GES added.
The general public are advised to report such unscrupulous persons to the police or pay such monies at their risk.
“Ghana Education Service shall not be held liable for such payment.”

Parliament was in a state of disarray on Friday, March 24, 2023, after Speaker Alban Bagbin briefly suspended the voting of President Akufo-Addo’s ministerial nominees.
The House agreed to decide the fate of seven candidates today. During the debate on a secret balloting, the Majority and Minority side clashed as the former sought to reschedule the meeting due to their numbers.
The Minority would not have it and tried to convince the Speaker. This resulted in disorder as MPs shouted on top of their voices – an action that prompted the presence of the Marshalls.
Unable to obtain decorum, the Speaker suspended the sitting briefly.
The Minority, displeased by the action chanted in union “We will vote” as the Speaker left the chamber. They kept chanting for close to three minutes with some Majority MPs interjecting with “You can’t vote.”
Due to information security concerns, the Kremlin has advised some Russian officials to give up their Apple iPhones by the end of March, according to the Russian business magazine Kommersant.
The Russian daily, which cited sources present at the discussion, reported that the command occurred during a seminar in the Moscow region earlier this month.
According to the publication, employees were instructed to swap their iPhones for smartphones running different operating systems, such as Android, its Chinese counterparts, or Aurora, an operating system created by the Russian business Open Mobile Platform.
Sergei Kiriyenko, first deputy head of Russia’s presidential administration, reportedly told the officials they had to replace their iPhones by April 1.
The reported instruction comes amid undergoing campaign preparations for the upcoming 2024 Russian presidential election. Apple had previously banned imports to Russia, shortly after the country invaded Ukraine last year.
Last year, Apple stopped product sales to Russia a week after the country invaded Ukraine. But a few months later, reports surfaced that people in Russia were still purchasing the new iPhone 14 through legalized parallel imports programs. A few months after the war began, Russia had reportedly legalized these import programs — systems that allowed sellers to ship products into the country without the trademark owner’s permission.
Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Although those within the Russian presidential administration were reportedly told to get rid of their Apple iPhones, it’s unclear whether all Russian government officials were advised to do so.
The Embassy of the Russian Federation in the US did not immediately respond to a request for comment ahead of publication. However, Kremlin press secretary Dmitry Peskov told reporters that “smartphones should not be used for official business,” Reuters reported.
“Any smartphone has a fairly transparent mechanism, no matter what operating system it has – Android or iOS,” he said, according to Reuters. “Naturally, they are not used for official purposes.”
President Akufo- Addo’s four candidates for the Supreme Court is up for debate in Parliament.
Barbara Ackah-Yensu and Samuel Adibu Asiedu have already received the House’s approval, however, Justice George Kingsley Koomson and Justice Ernest Yao Gaewu are yet to.
The President stated that the appointments had gone via both the Judicial Council and the Council of State in his letter to Parliament in July of last year.
The Minority says Justice Gaewu’s past as a Parliamentary candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) disqualifies him from such a position.
Asawase MP, Muntaka Mubarak insisted his approval will be a bad reflection on the House.
“When you set a bad precedent, tomorrow it becomes the yardstick for others to make this same demand,” he said on the floor on Friday.
On the other hand, the opposition MPs are holding back George Koomson’s approval because “he just joined the appeal court.”
“He also joined to meet so many senior colleagues,” he told the House.
He told the Speaker that if these two nominees are allowed to pass, “what we are doing to this country is simply telling our judges to be sycophants.”
Meanwhile, Ejisu MP, John Kumah says he is satisfied with the judges’ capacity to deliver on their mandate.
If the stalemate persists, the House is expected to put the approval to a secret balloting process.
According to several media sites, former president Donald Trump raised $1.5 million in the three days following his projection on Truth Social that he would be detained on Tuesday.
According to Fox News, Trump’s 2024 campaign acknowledged the amount on Wednesday. According to reports, the funds came from local donations.
The same sum was raised over that time period, according to The Washington Post, which cited an unnamed individual with knowledge of the situation.
The resulting average of $500,000 per day is about twice as much as the average daily income from the weeks prior to and following his announcement of his candidacy for president in November.
The Trump campaign brought in $11.8 million in the six weeks before the announcement, averaging out at $280,000 a day. And in the six weeks after Trump announced his run, his campaign raised $9.5 million, or $226,000 a day.
The former president’s funding boost came after he wrote on Truth Social on Saturday that he would be arrested Tuesday over the hush-money investigation by the Manhattan district attorney’s office. It’s unclear what basis he had for the claim — his lead defense attorney told Insider on Saturday that the defense team hadn’t heard an arrest date from the Manhattan DA — but Tuesday came and went with no arrest.
Trump urged supporters to “PROTEST, TAKE OUR NATION BACK” in his Truth Social post, which came amid rising indicators that he might soon be indicted by a New York grand jury over the Stormy Daniels hush-money case.
As the anticipation of an indictment grew, Trump’s campaign capitalized by highlighting it in almost every fundraising message. The daily messages seen by Insider tell recipients that the “justice system has utterly COLLAPSED” and that they can be a “FOUNDING DEFENDER” by giving money to the former president.
One such email asked supporters to sign a petition opposing a Trump arrest and afterward requested donations to his campaign.
The former president’s fundraising efforts appeared on Truth Social as well.
“If you are doing poorly, as so many of you are, do not send anything. If you are doing well, which was made possible through the great policies of the Trump Administration, send your contribution,” he wrote Monday. He reposted the same message Wednesday, making no mention of his own false arrest prediction.
Trump has raised millions while casting himself as a victim of political persecution. In the weeks after he lost the 2020 election, he raised a reported $170 million off lies that the White House was stolen from him.
He also told voters that their money would go to an “Official Election Defense Fund” for investigating the election, but the House select committee investigating the Capitol riot confirmed in June that no such fund ever existed. Most of the money instead went to Trump’s PAC, per the Post.
Representatives for Trump didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment sent outside business hours.

Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has called the bluff of the International Criminal Court (ICC) over the arrest warrant issued against President Vladimir Putin.
Responding to the ICC’s directive, Dmitry Medvedev noted that the Court would not be able to lift a finger against the Russian President due to the repercussions they believe might ensue.
According to him, the ICC’s assertion is not far from the truth as “It is quite possible to imagine a hypersonic missile being fired from the North Sea from a Russian ship at The Hague courthouse.”
“That’s why they won’t start a war either. They’ll be afraid to,” he added in a lengthy Telegram post.
He further noted that the court is “only a miserable international organization, not the population of a NATO country.”
Medvedev also advised the court’s judges to “look carefully into the sky.”
He again stated that the arrest warrant for Putin heralds the collapse of international law, calling it “a grim sunset of the whole system of international relations.
This came a day after the UN denounced the forced deportations as war crimes.
US President Joe Biden says the arrest warrant for Putin is justified.
According to the warrant, Putin might be detained in any of the more than 100 nations that acknowledge the ICC’s jurisdiction.
Putin joins former presidents of Sudan and Libya, Omar al-Bashir and Muammar Gaddafi, as the third sitting president to be named in an ICC warrant.
It has been a week since the arrest warrant was issued and President Putin, who recently hosted China President Xi Jinping, remains a free man.
Later this year, Putin is scheduled to attend a five-nation economic meeting in South Africa. The South African administration has stated that it will seek clarifications before Putin’s arrival.
Ghanaian media personality, Nana Aba Anamoah, has alleged that foreign companies in Ghana owe an amount of GHS 2.75 billion to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
This is said to be half of GHS 5.5 billion the ECG hopes to collect from institutions that are indebted to the company.
In a Facebook post on Thursday, March 23, 2023, Nana Aba Anamoah wrote “ECG is owed over 5.5 billion Cedis. Half of that amount is owed by foreign companies.”
“B5 Plus Ltd for instance owed 42 million Cedis. When ECG officials arrived there yesterday, they paid 16 million and made a commitment to settle 20 million Cedis by end of the week.
“Fabri Metal Company Limited was disconnected yesterday. They owe ECG GHS 28 million.”
According to her, Ferro Fabrik Limited which was disconnected from the national grid owe ECG and amount of GHS 18 million.
The Electricity Company of Ghana on Monday, March 20, 2023, embarked on a national revenue mobilisation exercise.
Since Monday, ECG has disconnected the Ho Airport in the Volta Region for owing the power distribution company GH¢63,000.
The regional office of the Ghana Revenue Authority, Ho Technical University and the Customs Excise and Preventive Service (CEPS) Training Academy in Kpetoe were disconnected for similarly owing.
According to the company, it will leave no stone unturned in ensuring all debts owed are paid.
The company is appealing to all customers to make payment before the disconnection team visits their premises. Customers can make payments at any bank or through mobile money. Customers can also pay by dialling *226# or by downloading the ECG PowerApp”.
