Ghanaian fashion designer supports late Christian Atsu’s school project with uniforms

A Ghanaian fashion brand, Garment Solutions, has pledged to support a project that former Black Stars player, Christian Atsu, was financing before his tragic death.

The desire to assist a school Atsu was building in Senya Beraku arose after one Gaynor shared a footage of the current status of the school while soliciting for assistance.

“Here is the latest video of the school build that Christian Atsu was funding. As you can see it’s almost done but we need to raise some more funds in order to finish it. A big thank you to all who have donated so far. Please share the @gofundme link in my bio and help spread the word as we still have a way to go. Thank you!,” she wrote on Instagram.

Reacting to her request, Garment Solutions said the business, rather than assist with cash, provides school uniforms for students.

“I know this not related to the building but can I help by providing their school uniforms? I’m a dressmaker in Ghana,” the business wrote.

The Black Stars midfielder, prior to his demise, was financing the construction of a school block for the people of Senya Beraku, located in the Awutu Senya District of the Central Region.

In 2018, Atsu had completed paperwork for a portion of land which he intends to use for the construction of the school block.

“I’m very happy, today I received the deeds for the land in #SenyaBeraku which means we can send the first part of the funding out to Ghana to start the building of the new school,” Atsu posted on Twitter.

Nigeria 2023 elections: Kano NNPP Office attack leaves two dead

The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) candidate for the House of Representatives in Kano State’s campaign headquarters was attacked on Sunday, leaving two people dead.

SP Abdullahi Kiyawa, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), revealed the information in a statement on Monday. He said that two unidentified people who were inside a stationary car were burned to death by a bunch of suspected thugs who set fire to the office.

The incident was reported to the INEC office in the Tudun Wada Local Government Area about 4 p.m., according to the Kano State Police Command (LGA).

A route leading to the INEC headquarters was reportedly attempted to be blocked by the hoodlums, according to Kiyawa.

“Security personnel were immediately mobilised to the scene,” the PPRO said. “One of the thugs was fatally injured and was rushed to Hospital where he died while receiving treatment.

Noting that an investigation is in progress, he added that “four other suspected thugs were arrested.”

In a similar incident, police foiled an attempt to burn down the INEC office in Takai LGA as election results were being collated. The incident reportedly occurred on Sunday around 2:30 pm.

Kiyawa noted that the police and other security agencies, in a swift response, prevented the attack, and four suspected thugs were arrested.

“The collation of the results was concluded peacefully and an investigation is in progress,” the statement said.

Ugandan nurse risks life to deliver vaccines

A nurse from Uganda has received praise for completing a perilous journey up an improvised wooden stairway across a hill to administer immunizations to children in a far-off community in the country’s eastern region.

As she ascended the steep hill on her way to immunize kids in Masheluse village, the nurse, known as Agnes Nambozo, was captured on camera.

As “nurse of the year,” Health Minister Jane Aceng praised her.

But some Twitter users in the country said the footage was an indictment of the government’s poor record on infrastructure.

“It’s a shame after over 50 years of self-rule citizens have to be subjected to this nonsense,” said Chris Ngaruthi.

“I am very sure she will be a happy person if she is awarded a safe way to reach her people when providing medical care,” said Eve Zalwango.

Nigeria 2023 elections: Atiku optimistic of becoming President

Atiku Abubakar, the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, claims that early results indicate he will likely win Nigeria’s presidential election.

The party said on Twitter that Mr Abubakar was “securing the highest number of valid votes cast as well as the statutory 25% in at least two thirds of the states”.

This is true despite the fact that only one of Nigeria’s 36 states had official results declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (Inec).

Bola Tinubu, the candidate for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) party, received 201,494 votes from the state’s southwest.

Peter Obi of the Labour Party received 11,397 votes, compared to Mr. Abubakar’s 89,554 votes.

Mahmood Yakubu, the chairman of Inec, stated that the commission would make part of the findings from the other states public on Monday at 10:00 GMT.

On Sunday, Inec announced that it was attempting to resolve issues with its portal for viewing election results.

Final presidential results are expected to be declared by 1 March. The vote on Saturday was marred by pockets of violence, widespread delays and logistical problems.

The Economic Community of West African States’ (Ecowas) election observer mission described the election as generally peaceful and with a massive voter turnout.

  • Nkrumah was ousted due to Danquah-Busia tradition, external intelligence – Mahama

Nkrumah was ousted due to Danquah-Busia tradition, external intelligence – Mahama

Former president John Dramani Mahama has accused adherents of the Danquah-Busia tradition of orchestrating the overthrow of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s first president.

He said that the Danquah-Busia tradition, out of which the New Patriotic Party emerged, collaborated with foreign operatives to oust Nkrumah in 1966.

According to Mr. Mahama, the revolt ruined Nkrumah’s vision for Ghana and the whole of Africa.

In a Facebook post on Friday, the former president made these comments as he remembered the 57th anniversary of the coup in 1966.

“57 years ago today, 24th February 1966, the Danquah-Busia political tradition conspired with external intelligence agencies to initiate Ghana’s first coup d’etat, which toppled the government of our first President, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

“This coup was achieved through a conscious and constant campaign of falsehood and calumny”, portions of Mahama’s post read.

He added that, “As a former President of Ghana who has also been at the receiving end of the Danquah-Busia tradition’s campaign of slander and sabotage, I can empathise completely with the quandary President Nkrumah found himself in”.

Danquah-Busia tradition worked with external intelligence to overthrow Nkrumah - Mahama
Ghana’s first president, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah

Mahama went on to say that “In 1966, I was a young boy still in primary school. But I remember highlights of the dark days that followed the February 24, 1966 coup”.

The former President used the occasion to urge Ghanaians to remain loyal to the country’s democratic path.

He also seized the opportunity to entreat African leaders to remain true to the tenets of democratic governance.

“As today marks 57 years of that coup d’etat, I call on all fellow Ghanaians and our patriotic security agencies and armed forces to mark this day as one of reflection and to remain loyal to the 1992 Constitution as we begin the task of rescuing our dear nation from the dark pit the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has plunged us into.

I further urge all Africans to give meaningful democracy a chance, the very reason for which I am presently here in Nigeria as Head of the West African Elders Forum on an election mediation mission, as the country votes on Saturday” the statement concluded.

On the matter, members of the Danquah-Busia tradition have consistently refuted the claims that they played a central role in Ghana’s first coup d’état.

Repeatedly, they have stressed that such assertions are false and should not be associated with the late Dr.J.B Danquah or the late Dr Kofi Abrefa Busia.

In one of such rebuttals a few years ago, the then Director of the Danquah-Busia Institute, Gabby Otchere-Darko took offense when a former Communication Minister, Dr Omane Boamah made that allegation on JoyNews.

Nigeria 2023 elections: N32.4m new notes to be used for vote-buying intercepted

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has seized N32.4 million in fresh notes that they believe are to be used in Lagos to buy votes.

The anti-graft organization said in a tweet on Friday that authorities had also detained a suspect and were questioning him.

“The massive operation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, to deter vote trading and other financial malfeasance ahead of tomorrow’s presidential and national assembly elections may have begun paying dividends with the interception in Lagos of the sum of N32,400,000 allegedly suspected to be used for vote buying in Lagos,” the statement read.

“The recovery was made by operatives of the Lagos Zonal Command of the Commission. The suspect involved has been taken into custody for further questioning.”

Abdulrasheed Bawa, the chairman of the EFCC, urged members of the anti-corruption organization assigned to the task of election monitoring to act courageously.

Bawa also urged them to avoid creating conditions that would allow dishonest individuals to compromise the integrity of the polls by offering money inducements.

“Tactical teams of operatives are currently on the ground in all the states of the federation and the FCT. Telephone hotlines have already been circulated through social media for members of the public to share information regarding financial malpractices with agents of the Commission.

“Members of the public are encouraged to report anyone trying to buy or sell votes by making use of the EFCC financial crimes reporting App, Eagle Eye, which is available for download on the Google Play or Apple store,” the statement added.

Earlier, security operatives arrested a federal lawmaker, Dr. Chinyere Igwe, with $498,100 on suspicion of attempted vote buying and money laundering.

The lawmaker who represents Port Harcourt Federal Constituency 2 in the House of Representatives was arrested along Aba Road in the state capital on Thursday.

These incidents come amid a scarcity of the new naira notes, subjecting millions of Nigerians to hardship. The situation also triggered protests in some states with aggrieved citizens barricading major roads to register their displeasure.

  • Why Christian Atsu loved Wakaso so much

Why Christian Atsu loved Wakaso so much

The late Christian Atsu and Mubarak Wakaso had a bromance which was only made official somewhere in 2022, when the former informed the world that he had found a “brother” in Wakaso.

On July 10, Atsu tweeted “there are friends that become family.”

This tweet resurfaced recently when Wakaso took to Twitter to mourn Christian Atsu, who was confirmed dead on February 18, 2023, after being trapped in a debris for 12 days following an earthquake that hit Turkey and Syria.

For many, the reason behind Atsu and Wakaso’s strong bond is unknown although they believe that it has got something to do with the Black Stars.

Both Atsu and Wakaso played for the senior national football team. The duo joined the Black Stars in 2012.

After receiving a call from the then head coach Kwasi Appiah, Atsu had to meet his new colleagues. According to him, he received a warm welcome .

“They were very nice. When a new player arrives, we are always looking for someone who can lift the team, add value to the team and do something different.

Derrick Boateng said we have never had a player like you for many years because you run with the ball. They encouraged me to be honest,” he told Sports journalist, Kwabena Yeboah.

Atsu noted that one of the many who provided encouragement was Mubarak Wakaso, who he then described as “friend.”

Christian Atsu and Mubarak Wakaso during their time with the Black Stars

The 31-year-old stated that his relationship with the midfielder dwelled on respect and the fact that Wakaso was a professional footballer.

“I like that guy so much. He is a professional player. He doesn’t joke with his work. Ghanaians can attest to this.”

“When I play with him, he always tells me ‘Christian, stay up, don’t come back. I will do the work for you but if they give the ball to you, you have to make sure you make good use of it. He put a lot of responsibility on me,” he added.

Wakaso (L) and Atsu (R) behind a game console

For Atsu, playing for the Black Stars was a dream come true, thus did not relent in his effort to stand out and be most productive.

“As Ghanaians footballers, our dream is to represent our country one day at the highest level and when I had the chance, I said to myself I was going to take this chance because I know in the Ghana National team, no matter how good you are, your first game is very important.”

Christian Atsu won 65 caps for Ghana and helped the Black Stars reach the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations final in Equatorial Guinea, winning the Player of the tournament.

As Ghana mourns Christian Atsu, many continue to share his philanthropic acts and his amazing skills while on the pitch.

  • February 24, 1966: The Lessons NOT Learnt

February 24, 1966: The Lessons NOT Learnt

    Friday, February 24, 2023 marked exactly 57 years since the first brutal maiming of a Ghana under construction on Friday, February 24, 1966. It was a brutal and reckless maiming without much thinking because its sponsors, architects and supporters failed to look at in its real terms as the;

    1. Overthrow of the 1st Republican Constitution, 1960 as amended in 1964.
    2. Closure of the 1st Republican Parliament and suspension of parliamentary practice.
    3. Overthrow of the Executive Sovereign Will of the People under the barrel of the gun.
    4. Usurpation of the Sovereign Will of the People to choose who to govern and how to be governed.

As it were, and unfortunately still thought of by a stubbornly unrelenting few, it was about the overthrow of Kwame Nkrumah and his indomitable CPP. Period! Yes, Kwame Nkrumah was the problem and he was gone! However, only less than six years after the excuse of a disaster, on exactly January 13, 1972, another act of impunity followed the terrible example sadly set.

The major beneficiary of the cruel coup visited on Ghanaians six years before, Prof. K. A. Busia and the Second Republican Constitution, 1969 were ousted on 13th January, 1972. Traitor Acheampong exclaimed; “The malpractices which existed before 1966 are still with us and there was no prospect of seeing an end of them” as the cause of the military takeover.

Some 27 years after the 1966 overthrow and its justification by persons of the UP tradition including late Prof K.A Busia, its successor party, NPP in 1993 went to the Supreme Court to describe the overthrow as wrong, “illegal”, unconstitutional and a dangerous precedence. The Malawian proverb; “cows are trapped by their horns, men, by the words” was in display.

In 1978, there was the military shakeup which ousted Colonel Acheampong and replaced him with General Akuffo. His regime was also violently ousted on June 4, 1979 in the counter coup d’etat that reluctantly handed over power on 24th September. Crime knows no law or ends. So came the ousting of Dr. Hilla Limann and the 3rd Republic on December 31, 1981.

For nearly 11 years, the PNDC ruled this country with iron fists, impunity, murder, thievery and a lazy appreciation of power as a position of privilege instead of responsibility. There was no accountability from those who had stolen the word ‘accountability’ as a mantra. They acted as they pleased only to yield to international pressure and a reawakened national consciousness.

From December 31, 1981 to January 6, 1993 for about 11 years, the claimant apostles of probity, accountability and transparency aggravated, without shame or honour, the dark days in Ghana. The PNDC maimed, disempowered and brutally assaulted every fabric of society to deceptively metamorphose into the monstrous election machine, NDC to perpetuate its unruliness.

    Congenial sycophancy

The Constitution, 1992 turned 30 years on January 7, 2023. For the period we have had 8 presidential and parliamentary elections producing 5 Presidents but 8 Parliaments. Largely, these elections have been dominated and won by the two dominant parties, NDC and NPP. From the beginnings, there was a marked difference between the two. However, congenial sycophancy has blurred any difference there was, and now it appears for both, it is just about power or position.

As Kwame Nkrumah, himself, observed, one positive lesson of 24th February, 1966 was the exposure of the sycophancy and hypocrisy of the many a member of the CPP. He had “for long the gravest doubts about many of those in leading positions” in the Party. He argued that they “failed to understand the political and social purposes of the State” rendering it defective.

Today, there are many in both NDC and NPP or other political groupings no matter how insignificant who have no idea of any political, social, economic and spiritual purpose. For such group of persons, it is enough to belong to the “Party in Power” as if we elect parties rather than candidates sponsored by parties. Worse of all is the unreadiness of political parties to change and act right.

    Disloyalty and treachery

Attendant to the congenial sycophancy is the barbaric disloyalty and treachery to the parties and the State. Nkrumah observed here too; “they had no loyalty to the state or the understanding of the social purpose which we were attempting to achieve.” It was therefore “absolutely impossible to utilise a machine which had shown itself so defective of understanding.”

Most a member of the two political parties that have dominated the 4th Republic, NDC and NPP would say would say; “Me nnya hwee” (I have got nothing). When you probe further, it is about money unworked for. There is no loyalty to any development purpose of the State or the Party vision espoused by its leaders. Sadly, disloyalty is entrenched by its twin, patronage, in impunity.

    Corruption and placating

Corruption was once aptly described by a former President as “mass murder.” I strongly believe that succinct description was a revelation. Three of the gang of mutineers who maimed Ghana eternally, Deku, Harlley, and Ankrah were to be dealt with for various corrupt acts. Thus, the coup saved them from being pursued. In turn, they justified the mutiny with corruption.

It is noteworthy that Nkrumah acknowledged the prevalence of corruption in the country but added attempts to identify, arrest and curb it. He “personally supervised the direction of criminal investigations against ministers and prominent Party members” which eventually led to the prosecution of a former Minister of Agriculture, F. Y. Asare and Kojo Djaba as accomplice.

Under the 4th Republic, we have always had a denial of corruption in government circles while it is at same time trumpeted in opposition enclaves. It is denied and when the denial fails, it is defied by cheap rationalisations, and/or equalisations. All these happen amidst scientifically established studies, locally and internationally. It is the case that no one wants to ‘bell the cat.’

    Distortions with Intolerance

Our politics right from the foundations have been shrouded in distortions. It is a fact that most of the leaders of the nation’s struggle to self-govern meant well. The degree of variation or difference of how well, I cannot tell. However, they differed strongly in the approach to the colonial question. Yet, they allowed their difference to obscure any common interest.

Perhaps, the most effective of them all was the man who had a broader, deeper and better understanding of the colonial question – Kwame Nkrumah. It was his experience from varied backgrounds more than anything that made it possible. This was the one line of departure. However, lies were heaped on each side from the opposite end just win the favour of the people.

A cursory look at the newspaper cuttings of from the very early days of our nation’s history and what pervades today are essentially the same. We slander and justify or rationalise the lies with additional falsehoods. So, for some 66 years, in the words of Most Rev. Dr. J. S. A. Stephens, a past President of the Methodist Church; we have had the period of:

“… misinformation and malicious rumour mongering that have earned us a generation who do not know how to appreciate their own greatness and their own achievements. People with weak morals and backward disposition do not read for truth. The monger, and with their mouth, they tear themselves and beloved nation apart, throwing their nation’s legacies to the wind only to gasp for death in poverty.”

We can rise together. We can recreate ourselves. We can refocus the energies of Ghana. We can rally every citizen into a formidable and indomitable national force that will crush the evils within. It will require a total commitment to TRUE CONSENSUS BUILDING THROUGH TOLERANCE AND SINCERITY IN THE FEAR OF GOD. May God be our Help as in ages past and bless Ghana.

I have decided to focus on helping the NDC to reclaim power in 2024 by re-energizing, and Rebuilding the base of the party. A court in Mozambique has jailed five of the eight individuals convicted of killing an albino man in July of last year.

Eight to thirty years is the range of the sentences.

According to the judge, the defendants had engaged in aggravated homicide, possession of human remains, and criminal association.

Additionally, they must give $5,000 (£4,000) to the victim’s relatives.

Four of the five suspects admitted to being involved in the crime, but they would not identify the perpetrators.

They had a market in the district of Murrupula for the sale of the albino victim’s bones.

The co-defendants told the court that they had dismembered the victim’s body, removed his arms and then handed him over to a foreign citizen in Mozambique who paid them about $95,000 (£80,000).

To commit their crime, the convicts lured their victim to a location where they said they would introduce him to a girlfriend.

President Kais Saied has assured sub-Saharan Africans living in Tunisia of their safety in spite of his stance against migrants.

He however noted that he would not stand for illegal migration into the country as it is causing “demographic” changes.

The president spoke during a meeting with the interior minister about the security situation in the country.

On Tuesday, Mr Saied had ordered security agencies to crack down on illegal migration from sub-Saharan African countries.

His reported remarks that illegal migration was interfering with the demographic make-up of the country was criticised by human rights groups in the country as racist.

The Tunisian Forum for Economic and Social Rights (FTDES) was quoted on Wednesday as referring to Mr Saied’s remarks as “drowning in racism and hatred”.

But Mr Saied on Thursday denied it, saying that those accusing him of racism were seeking to create discord and damage relations with other countries.

  • Land borders in Nigeria to be closed on Saturday

Land borders in Nigeria to be closed on Saturday

All of Nigeria’s land borders will be closed on Saturday for the fiercely disputed elections.

According to the Nigeria Immigration Service, the decision is intended to ensure that the “elections are free, fair, and devoid of anomalies.”

Border officials have been instructed to ensure that the directive is strictly followed.

According to reports, the presidential and parliamentary elections will feature the fiercest competition since the end of military government in 1999.

The immigration service said it had seized 6,000 voters cards and other Nigerian identification documents from illegal immigrants in the run-up to the elections.

President Muhammadu Buhari had earlier on Thursday urged security agencies to be “firm and courageous” in the election period, and warned against riots after after the announcement of election results.

  • Election 2023: Charts that describe Nigeria

Election 2023: Charts that describe Nigeria

Nigeria, with 214 million inhabitants, is the most populous and wealthiest nation in Africa, and its actions have a significant impact on the rest of the continent. After eight years under Muhammadu Buhari, voters will choose a new president, but whoever is elected will face some difficult obstacles.

Some of the issues that voters are considering are shown in the following charts.

Nigerians, like others all over the world, have experienced an increase in food costs over the past year as a result of the consequences from the conflict in Ukraine. Yet, prices had been rising prior to the war due to a shortage of foreign currency and the closing of the border to numerous imports.

In total, inflation in 2022 was just under 19%, which was the highest level in 20 years. Garri, or cassava flakes, a staple food, has been one of the fundamental items least impacted, but families are being greatly impacted by the sharp increase in the price of other necessities like tomatoes and vegetable oil.

Chart showing the change in price of basic goods

If the new president wants to help people with the cost of basic items, they will face the problem that the government is already spending more than it receives.

Huge sums are spent on subsidising petrol and the oil-producing nation has not been able to take advantage of higher oil prices as it has little refining capacity and has to re-import petrol.

Analysts are getting increasingly concerned about the sustainability of the public debt with the cost of paying the interest on it exceeding government income at times in 2022.

Graph of Nigeria's public debt over time

As one of Africa’s top oil producers, Nigeria has relied on the black gold for government revenue as well as a source of vital foreign currency. Nevertheless, the oil-rich country has not taken advantage of the money generated – much of it has been stolen or misused.

And oil production has been declining in the last decade. In 2022 it fell to its lowest level in 30 years.

Oil theft and vandalism have been blamed for the loss of output. This, added to years of under-investment and the age of the oil fields themselves, means that Nigeria is falling behind other oil-producing nations.

    Graph showing Nigeria's oil output

With half of Nigerians under the age of 18, the country’s leaders face the challenge of how to harness this youthful population.

They need to help the economy grow to fulfil the needs and ambitions of all those young people.

Even with so many people too young to cast their ballots, 40% of registered voters are under the age of 35, making them a huge constituency. A direct appeal to them could influence the outcome of the election.

    Population bar chart

The first thing that most young Nigerians want is a job.

Currently a third of Nigerians who want to work are unemployed. When it comes to young people, more than half of those between 15 and 24 are looking for work.

The measures to deal with the Covid pandemic certainly had an impact but unemployment rates were rising before the outbreak of the virus.

The economy has grown since 2015, but just not fast enough to accommodate all the new people seeking jobs.

Insecurity has been cited as one of the reasons behind low growth, but economists have also blamed other measures such as currency restrictions and shutting the borders to many imports, saying they discourage investment.

    Chart showing unemployment rate

The level of access to some basic infrastructure that could improve the ease of doing business, as well as everyday lives, is low.

The poor state of the power network has long been a source of criticism and only around 55% of the population have access to electricity, according to World Bank figures.

And when it comes to the internet, just 36% of Nigerians are getting online, which puts it in the middle of the pack of West African countries.

    Chart showing internet acceess

Dealing with the growing levels of violence in Nigeria will be a major priority for the next president.

When President Buhari was first elected in 2015, the threat from militant Islamist group Boko Haram in the north-east was the biggest concern. While they no longer control much territory, upsurges in kidnappings, politically motivated attacks, farmer-herder tensions, criminal violence and a separatist insurgency in the south-east, as well as police brutality, undermine faith in the state to keep the population safe.

This is no longer an issue that is largely confined to the north-east – the problem has now spread across the country.

Of all the children around the world who don’t go to school, one in five live in Nigeria.

While this is partly a reflection of the sheer size of the country’s young population, the fact that nearly 40% of the country’s 5-11-year-olds are not in school is a major concern.

This is a countrywide issue but attendance levels are generally worse in the north. Some of this has been affected by insecurity, but gender and poverty are also factors.

    Ramos announces international retirement

Sergio Ramos has announced his retirement from international football.

He won the European Championship in 2008 and 2012 in addition to La Roja’s victory in 2010. Ramos, 36, was capped a record 180 times for Spain.

But, the Paris Saint-Germain defender has opted to call it quits after going without a match since March 2021, capping a glittering international career.

He wrote: “The time has come, the time to say goodbye to the national team.

“This morning I received the call from the current coach who told me that he doesn’t count and that he won’t count on me, regardless of the level I can show or how I continue my sporting career.

“With great regret, it is the end of a journey that I hoped would be longer and that would end with a better taste in the mouth, on the height of all the successes we have achieved.

“Humbly, I think that that career deserved to end because of a personal decision or because my performance was not up to what our national team deserves, but not because of age or other reasons that, without having heard them, I have felt.”

He continued: “Being young or less young is not a virtue or a defect, it is only a temporary trait that is not necessarily related to performance or ability.

“I look with admiration and envy at [Luka] Modric, [Lionel] Messi, Pepe.

“Unfortunately, it won’t be like that for me, because football is not always fair and football is never just football.

“Through it all, I take it with this sadness that I want to share with you, but also with my head very high and very grateful for all these years and for all your support.

“I take back indelible memories, all the titles we have fought and celebrated all together and the tremendous pride.

“All of you have made me happy. I will continue to cheer on my country from home with the thrill of the privileged who has been able to proudly represent it 180 times. Heartfelt thanks to everyone who always believed in me!”

But once he retired, the Chief Justice gave him a six-month extension to finish the case, which is due to expire this month.

  • Ade Coker advises NDC flagbearer aspirants to step back for Mahama

Ade Coker advises NDC flagbearer aspirants to step back for Mahama

A former Greater Accra Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Joseph Ade Coker, has urged the party’s flagbearer candidates to support John Mahama’s candidacy without mounting an opposition.

According to him, the former President should not be sidetracked since he is the only candidate who has the potential to assist the NDC in regaining power.

Speaking on Thursday on Accra-based Atinka TV, he asserted that Mahama should be elected president by popular vote rather than through a contest, adding that the other contenders could declare their candidacies at a later time.

“My advice to those who would be contesting is that, even though they have gone for forms and we have been talking to them, I believe that they should look at the larger picture of the NDC.

“We do not want a situation where by the time we finish, we are divided.

We do not want that. There is room for everybody in the party and at the appropriate time, we can consider them”, the former Greater Accra Regional Chairman said.

Mr Coker’s comments adds to the widespread endorsement Mahama has garnered following the announcement of his bid to contest in the 2024 presidential elections on the ticket of the NDC.

So far, the former President is ahead of his contenders – former Finance Minister, Dr Kwabena Duffuor and former Kumasi Mayor, Kojo Bonsu.

The NDC will hold its presidential and parliamentary primaries on Saturday, May 13 to elect a new flagbearer as well as parliamentary candidates across the various constituencies.

Meanwhile, the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) says it is prepared to face former President John Dramani Mahama, following his decision to contest the 2024 presidential election.

Addressing a press conference on Wednesday, the NPP’s Director of Communication, Richard Ahiagbah, said his outfit is not intimidated by Mahama’s intentions.

According to him, Mr Mahama did not give a good account of himself while in office, but rather subjected Ghanaians to untold hardship; including the one-time power fluctuations, termed ‘dumsor’.

Details of events prior to Rev. Boakye’s death

An official church document has revealed information on the circumstances leading up to the death of Rev. Dr. Anthony Kwadwo Boakye, the founder and general overseer of  Resurrection Power New Generation Church.

On February 22, 2023, word spread that the well-known man of God had died following a brief illness.

On Tuesday, February 21, 2023, at around 2 o’clock in the morning, he is said to have passed away at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra.

The church’s leadership provided information of the deceased man of God’s illness and final days in a press release that was signed by its legal counsel, Alexander K.K. Abban, Esq.

Below is the sequence of events that happened as narrated by the church:

Rev. Anthony Kwadwo Boakye was suddenly taken ill and struck down by a stroke in the early hours of Saturday 23rd October 2021.

He was subsequently taken on admission to the Healthlink Medical Center at East Legon for further medical attention.

His condition improved tremendously after about three months, he was discharged and directed to undergo gradual physiotherapy.

He saw marked improvement in his general well-being and more importantly, in the movement of his left hand which was most greatly affected by the disease.

Following the impressive improvement in his health conditions, Rev. Boakye resumed his pastoral activities by giving virtual homilies from his base at an undisclosed location on Sundays until he physically appeared in church on New Year’s Eve to lead in the church service himself.

After this, he continued with his physiotherapeutic exercise and had regular audiences with some selected leaders of the church, family members, and his legal counsel.

On 31st January, 2023, his family was compelled to take him back to the hospital when he complained of sharp pains in his left leg.

It was detected that blood circulation to his left leg was not the best and there was the need to fly him out of the country to see further medical care and if necessary, undergo a surgical operation.

Preparations were underway to make that journey when he suddenly took ill again and was rushed to the Cardiothoracic Center at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital where he died.

  • Climate change the cause of Mozambique fish deaths

Climate change the cause of Mozambique fish deaths

Scientific tests have proven that the high amounts of fresh water from rivers draining into the sea were what killed the fish on Mozambique beaches earlier this month.

On February 10, the BBC reported on the dead fish that had been washing up in Maputo Bay and worrying the authorities.

Lidia Cardoso, the minister of fisheries, stated on Wednesday that the findings showed that the primary contributing factor was the change in meteorological circumstances.

She also denied rumors that the fish had been poisoned with chemicals.

“[It] had nothing to do with chemical components. The discharge from the rivers due to the floods affected the fish, which are very vulnerable to stress – and because the salinity level in the water dropped, the fish died,” she said.

Former President Sankara to reburied in Burkina Faso

Even though Thomas Sankara’s family declared they wouldn’t be present, the military administration in Burkina Faso is getting ready to rebury the former president’s remains on Thursday.

The secret ceremony will take place where Sankara and 12 other people were shot dead in an attempted military coup in October 1987.

His family indicated they wouldn’t go because they didn’t like the location, but the government claimed that “socio-cultural and security imperatives of national interest” dictated the choice of location.

Sankara’s anti-imperialist attitude and austere lifestyle have made him a hero to many people in Africa.

The government says his reburial will be done according to customary and religious funeral rites.

Sankara rose to power 1983 and was killed four years later at the age of 37 in a coup led by by his close friend Blaise Compaoré.

Mr Compaoré proceeded to rule the country for 27 years before being deposed in 2014 after a popular uprising. He was handed a life sentence in absentia in 2022 for the death of Mr Sankara.

8 things that will happen if Ghana’s economy collapses

Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, has given heads up on the imminent collapse of Ghana’s economy in the coming days.

According to the minister, if an agreement is not reached with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to secure the $3bn credit facility, the economy will be derailed and eventually collapse.

Addressing pensioner bondholders who were displeased over their inclusion in government’s Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP) on February 6, 2023, the minister said “We need to be mindful that we really need to be successful in going to the fund by this March to avoid what we all experienced last year which we all don’t want to experience again.”

Here is what will happen if Ghana’s economy collapses:

    1. Banks would close, which means Ghanaians would likely lose access to credit.

    2. Demand would outstrip supply of food, gas, and other necessities.

    3. If the collapse affects local governments and utilities, then water and electricity might no longer be available.

    4. Interest rates would skyrocket. Investors would rush to other currencies, such as the dollar, yuan, euro, or even gold.

    5. The situation would create not just inflation, but hyperinflation, as the cedi would lose value to other currencies.

    6. There would be extreme poverty and hunger leading to deaths.

    7. Social vices and crime rates will spike.

    8. All of these and many others will create chaos and lawlessness leading to eventual failure of government.

Famous football commentator, Motson, dies at age 77

John Motson, a football analyst, has died at the age of 77.

For 50 years, his recognizable voice graced the airways, and the BBC veteran broadcast nearly 2,500 games while in the booth.

A statement from the Englishman’s family confirmed: “It is with great sadness we announce that John Motson died peacefully in his sleep today.”

Motson, who was given an OBE for services to sports broadcasting in 2001, began his career as a reporter for the Barnet Press and Sheffield Morning Telegraph before taking a full-time job at the national broadcaster in 1968.

He worked for Match of the Day from 1971 to 2018 and earned his big break when covering Hereford’s iconic FA Cup triumph over Newcastle.

The man affectionately nicknamed Motty, known for his trademark sheepskin coats, oversaw 10 World Cups, 10 European Championships and a staggering 29 FA Cup finals, bringing some of football’s most memorable moments to fans.

He was in the commentary box for Diego Maradona’s superb effort against Belgium as Argentina earned a spot in the 1986 World Cup final and famously quipped “the Crazy Gang has beaten the Culture Club” after Wimbledon stunned Liverpool to lift the FA Cup in 1988.

Paul Gascoigne’s solo effort against Scotland at Euro 1996 and England’s famous 5-1 victory over Germany in 2001 were also among the highlights of a storied career.

His final game for the BBC was a clash between Crystal Palace and West Brom in 2018, where he was cheered by fans after the game and presented with a framed programme and crystal microphone by then Eagles boss Roy Hodgson.

Reacting to the news, fellow commentator Martin Tyler said: “He was a standard setter for us all.

“He was a very serious broadcaster but he was a really fun guy to be around. He had a great sense of humour.

“He was an icon and a beacon to us all.

“I think the legacy that John has left, the soundbites, the voice associated with so many great occasions, so many great goals — it was a great career and a very good life and I’m really sorry it has come to an end today.”

On social media, fellow BBC broadcaster and 1986 World Cup Golden Boot winner Gary Lineker said: “Deeply saddened to hear that John Motson has died.

“A quite brilliant commentator and the voice of football in this country for generations. He’ll be very much missed. RIP Motty.”

While Jamie Carragher, who lifted the Champions League with Liverpool in 2005, added: “RIP John Motson.

“An absolute legend of the game. So many of us grew up listening to this man describe the action and goals on Match of the Day and cup finals. Sad loss.”

Following a lioness escape from a container in North West province, the South African police department has issued warnings to nearby residents.

According to reports, the lioness escaped while being transported on the back of a vehicle by its owner.

It’s unclear precisely when or how the large cat broke out from the shipping container; the owner was only made aware of the situation upon arrival in Tlakgameng, according to local media.

The lioness is said to have escaped from a container while on transit

Workers at nature reserves and farmers are looking for the wild cat.

The officials in charge of wildlife protection have requested information from anyone who witnesses the lioness.

It follows two separate instances last month in the province of Gauteng in which two tigers escaped their confines.

  • Qatari bidder is ‘a good fit’ for United, Xavi claims

Qatari bidder is ‘a good fit’ for United, Xavi claims

Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad bin Al Thani, in Xavi’s opinion, would be “a good fit” as the owner of Manchester United.

Before to the ‘soft’ deadline last week, Al Thani fronted one of the two public offers for United.

Little is known about the Qatari banker who wants to buy the entire club after the Glazer family decided to sell their share.

Nevertheless, Xavi, the Barcelona coach who will face United this week, coached Al Sadd in Qatar for two and a half years.

The 43-year-old was also previously a player at Al Sadd and is familiar with Al Thani, he said on Wednesday.

“He is a responsible, serious person, a good fit for United,” Xavi said. “I worked in Qatar for six years and I know the sheikh.”

Jim Ratcliffe’s INEOS has launched a rival bid to that led by Al Thani, planning an offer only for the Glazers’ stake.

Chiesa injured but setback ‘nothing serious’, Allegri says

Federico Chiesa’s season has been plagued by ailments, according to Massimiliano Allegri, and the problem keeping him out this week is “nothing serious.”

Juventus‘ match against Nantes in the second leg of their Europa League knockout round play-off will not feature Chiesa.

He made an impression in the first leg, which the Bianconeri dominated before drawing 1-1 in Turin, so his absence is disappointing.

Given that Chiesa lost nearly a year due to an anterior cruciate ligament injury, any layoff for him is going to raise concerns.

However, Allegri was able to reassure Juve supporters ahead of the match at Stade de la Beaujoire, suggesting such setbacks were natural after a major injury.

“Unfortunately, tomorrow we don’t have him, but we knew this,” Allegri said.

“When a player is 10 months without playing, he comes back and when he makes two games in a row, some issues can occur that are nothing serious but affect the possibility of having him available.”

Juve would have hoped not to be playing in the Europa League, but Allegri still sees an opportunity to take a rare step.

In each of the previous three campaigns, the Serie A giants were beaten in their first knockout tie in the Champions League, meaning they are looking to end a long wait for a two-legged triumph.

“This year Juventus has an important goal,” Allegri said. “It is to pass the first qualifying round, even if these are the ‘sixteenth-finals’, given that in the last three years we have always gone out in the first knockout round in the Champions League.

“Tomorrow is a final, a unique game, since away goals no longer count double. We know that tomorrow we play a game at [Nantes’] home, and we play for the passage through this round.”

Shop attendant gets arrested after locking up ECG staff

A shopkeeper, 24, has been detained by the police after she locked a member of the Electricity Company of Ghana’s  (ECG) monitoring  team in her store.

The staff were conducting a monitoring exercise to evaluate the condition of the local pre-paid meters.

The shop, which had previously lost power due to engaging in a meter by-pass, was brought to the team’s notice because it had been reconnected without the use of ECG.

The shop owner, Enoch Kwafo, allegedly ordered [Veronica Ansah] his attendant to lock the ECG staff up while they called a mob to attack him.

The locked-up staff was, however, rescued by colleagues who had visited nearby premises. The case was reported to the police and the attendant was arrested.

Dr Mark Owusu Ansah, Accra West Regional Revenue Protection Manager, ECG, said: “The customer had reconnected power to his shop on three previous occasions despite a bill slapped on him for engaging in illegal connection.”

In an interview, he said the shop owed Gh¢10,517.53.

“The customer has not approached us to clear this debt, and keeps reconnecting himself anytime we disconnect him,” Dr Owusu Ansah said.

The Accra West General Manager, ECG, Ebenezer Ghunney expressed concerns over incidents of threats and attacks on staff of the Company while they carried out their legitimate duties.

“We are liaising with the security agencies to ensure that our staff work in the best congenial and peaceful atmosphere always,” he said.

He said the Company would take action against anyone who impeded the work of its field staff.

Last year, the Accra West Region recovered GH¢10,363,755 from 1,900 customers who were apprehended for engaging in various forms of illegal connections.

These customers were surcharged for the power they used and some were also tried in court for stealing power.

The Accra West Region has eight operational districts.

They are Ablekuma, Achimota, Amasaman, Bortianor, Dansoman, Kaneshie, Korlebu and Nsawam.

Speaker Alban Bagbin launches 30th anniversary celebration of Parliamentary democracy

Speaker of the 8th Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, in his colourful Ghanaian kente cloth on Wednesday, launched the much anticipated 30th Anniversary Celebrations of Ghana’s Parliamentary democracy.

Recounting a brief history about the Fourth Republic, the Speaker noted that “in 1960 we jettisoned the 1957 Constitution which was fashioned according to the Westminster model of parliamentary practice. We adopted our First Republican Constitution on 1st July 1960. We then had military interruption between 1966 and 1969.

“The Second Republic, which was ushered in in 1969 also got interrupted: that subsequently paved way for the Third Republic in 1979. In 1981, that was also truncated until 1992 when we had our Fourth Republican Constitution adopted through a referendum. It has been a journey of vicissitudes toward the peaceful democracy that we enjoy today,” he added.

Commenting on the programmes lined up for the celebrations the Speaker Bagbin mentioned that the yearlong celebrations will zone the country into six (6) zones where activities such as lectures, mock parliaments, football competitions, health walk among others would be organised.

The Speaker also used the opportunity to congratulate the past speakers of the Fourth Republic for their immense contribution towards Parliamentary Democracy.

He mentioned Rt. Hon. Daniel Francis Annan (late), the pioneering Speaker of the First Parliament of the Fourth Republic, who served from 7th January 1993 to 6th January 2001, Rt. Hon. Peter Ala Adjetey (late), the Speaker of Parliament from the 7th January 2001 to the 6th January 2005, Rt. Hon. Ebenezer Begyina Sekyi-Hughes Speaker of Parliament from 7th January 2005 to 6th January 2009, Rt. Hon. Justice Joyce Adelaide Bamford-Addo, the Speaker of Parliament from 7th January 2009 to 6th January 2013, Rt. Hon. In a speech read on behalf of the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo by the Chief of State, Akosua Frema Osei-Opare, the President noted that it is for the good of the country that Parliament continues to develop the capacity to insist on accountability in all aspect of the lives of the people of Ghana, stressing that no institution is better suited for this than the representatives of the people.

“As President of the Republic, I assure you that, out of duty to our children and grandchildren, and to generations yet unborn, my government will do everything it can to help strengthen Parliament,” he assured the House.

In his welcome address, the Clerk to Parliament, Mr. Cyril K. O. Nsiah, said the Parliamentary Service remains resolute in performing its non-partisan role of providing the requisite technical and procedural support services required by Parliament to execute its constitutional mandate.

“We will continue to emulate the rich culture, values and norms of independence, non-partisanship and diligence inherited from the lineage of experienced former Clerks to Parliament and former staff of the Service as we assiduously pursue organisational objectives and goals through the needed structural and institutional reforms to optimise our service delivery capacity in order to assist Hon. Members of Parliament carry out their functions” he indicated.

The Majority Leader, Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu and the Minority Leader Ato Forson, believed that even though 30 years of Parliamentary Democracy might seem relatively young and little to celebrate as compared to countries like United Kingdom and United States of America, considering where Ghana find it self with a number a parliamentary and constitutional crisis within West Africa, the 30th anniversary is worth celebrating.

The year-long celebration is under the theme “Thirty Years of Parliamentary Democracy under the Fourth Republic; The Journey Thus Far”

The launch of the 30th anniversary celebrations which was done in the Chamber of Parliament, saw MPs from both sides of the House, Members of the Diplomatic Corps, Staff of the Parliamentary Service and other invited guests dancing happily to the local musical melodies courtesy Voices of Democracy and the Ghana Armed Forces Band.

  • Ghana’s human resource would make even Singapore undeveloped – Alban Bagbin

Ghana’s human resource would make even Singapore undeveloped – Alban Bagbin

Speaker of Parliament, Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin, has bemoaned the lack of human resource in the country needed to promote growth and development.

According to  Speaker Bagbin, the situation in the country is so dire that should the current human resource be transported to Singapore, the Southeast Asian country would become undeveloped.

Speaking in Parliament on Wednesday, February 22, 2023, when the Legislature celebrated its 30th anniversary of democracy, he  emphasized the need to invest in Ghana’s human resource.

“We must focus on getting the right human resource to lead the country. You can keep on changing the constitution, change whatever concept of governance you want.

“But if you don’t get the right human resource, you can never develop your society. In this state, if we take our leaders to Singapore, Singapore will become an undeveloped country,” he said.

A country’s human resource can be improved through education and training.

Singapore has moved from an undeveloped country to a developed nation in a span of 50 years.

Five decades ago, Singapore was confronted with severe unemployment, poor infrastructure, and a housing shortage.

According to the World Bank, Singapore is now ranked as one of the most livable cities, boasting one the highest levels of human capital development in the world.

The Bank noted that rapid industrialization in the 1960s catapulted the island nation’s development trajectory, with manufacturing becoming the main driver of growth.

“In the early 1970s, Singapore reached full employment and joined the ranks of Hong Kong SAR, Republic of Korea, and Taiwan a decade later as Asia’s newly industrializing economies. The manufacturing and services sectors remain the twin pillars of Singapore’s high value-added economy, ” the World Bank reports.

In 2022, Singapore’s economy grew more than expected, according to government figures.

The Southeast Asian city-state’s economy grew 3.8 percent last year, preliminary figures from the Ministry of Trade and Industry showed. The government had forecast growth of 3.5 percent, down from 7.6 percent in 2021.

Does Christian Atsu have another wife and kids?

Some online portals have fallen victim to misidentification while reporting on the impact of Christian Atsu’s death, whose demise has plundered Ghana into a state of mourning.

The wife of the late Black Stars player has been misidentified.

This has been the case due to a misreportage by some Ghanaian media houses on a video shared by a woman with the TikTok ID @sofiakasy who was mourning her dead husband.

The said woman is also a victim of the February 6 earthquake that hit Turkey and Russia that has killed over 35,000 people.

In the viral video, she said “I know it hurts, but I’m trying to be strong for my kids. I miss him. I miss him so much.’”

Without further checks, a number of online portals jumped onto the story and published articles with headlines such as “Christian Atsu’s Wife Marie-Claire Rupio Speaks In Sad Audio: ‘I’m Staying Strong For My Kids But I Miss Him.”

The misreportage got the attention of Marie-Claire Rupio, the actual wife of Christian Atsu, who condemned the lack of efforts by the sites to verify before publishing such articles.
