  • Your views can’t be accepted always – National Cathedral Board of Trustees to Bishop Dag

Your views can’t be accepted always – National Cathedral Board of Trustees to Bishop Dag

The Board of Trustees of the National Cathedral project has responded to remarks made in the resignation letter of Bishop Dag Heward-Mills, who serves as head of the Lighthouse Group of Churches.

Board contends that the revered minister and all other trustees should understand that their preferences won’t always be taken into consideration.

The Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Apostle Professor Opoku Onyinah, stated in a news statement that all leaders have their own perspectives on some subjects and should be recognized for them.

With this admonition, it concluded by urging other members to accept and appreciate divergent views or resign from the trusteeship.

“These churches and their leaders not only have deep-seated theological differences, but also different understandings and approaches to the development of the National Cathedral.

“The challenge of such a group is that individual leaders, with a history of implementing their own organizational /denominational programs and vision, have to be part of a collective decision-making process where their preferences might not always prevail.

“Specifically, this means that no one leader can have all their preferences, methods, and approaches accepted. In this changed and unfamiliar context, some would prefer to leave the Trusteeship,” an excerpt of the release said.

The presiding Bishop of the Lighthouse Group of Churches, Bishop Dag Heward-Mills resigned from the board in August 2022.

In his resignation letter, the venerable bishop aired his displeasure about some of the happenings on the board.

According to the respected preacher, even though he was a trustee and attended all meetings until his resignation, he was not involved nor privy to discussions on the financial and technical issues concerning the project.

Also, amongst other issues of concern to him, the seasoned Bible teacher said weighty issues and decisions were taken by persons other than the Board of Trustees.

He said these reasons compelled him to resign from the board even though he supports the building of the Cathedral.

“I have been a reachable and available trustee and attended every meeting of trustees since the pandemic began, in person and by zoom, and the records will show that.

If I say that I, as a trustee, do not know many of the financial and technical issues concerning the Cathedral, it means the discussions about the National Cathedral were held by some people outside the trustees’ meeting or perhaps in a forum that I was not present or invited to.”

    http://backend.theindependentghana.com/i-didnt-know-anything-about-decisions-on-national-cathedral-bishop-dag/

“On the one hand, the National Cathedral is said to be a Government of Ghana project, with the government taking financial decisions. Yet, on another hand, at meetings, it is implied that the trustees have taken or participated in taking some decisions.”

The National Cathedral Project has been one of the controversial public issues since the project was commissioned.

Apart from the questions of accountability repeatedly raised by the Minority in Parliament, there have also been concerns about the project’s relevance in the face of the country’s current economic crisis.

    http://backend.theindependentghana.com/after-6-years-and-us30m-ghanaians-see-only-a-massive-pit-heward-mills-laments/

There have also been conflicts of interest including possession of multiple identities among other suspicious dealings allegations against the Secretary of the National Cathedral Board of Trustees, Rev. Victor Kusi-Boateng, who doubles as the founder of Power Chapel Worldwide.

Meanwhile, the Executive Director of the National Cathedral of Ghana, Dr Paul Opoku Mensah has dismissed the allegations.

He explained that the amount paid on September 8, 2021, was a loan from a board member whose name he fell short of mentioning.

  • Lying about crime emboldens corrupt officers – Bridget Otoo

Ace broadcaster, Bridget Otoo, has expressed her disappointment in one Patrick Asiedu, who accused officers of the Ghana Police Service of planting narcotics in his car.

This comes after recent findings from the Police prove that “the entire story narrated in the audio tape (by Patrick Asiedu) is false and a total fabrication by the suspect.”

In a viral audio recording, Patrick Asiedu, who has now been identified as an Uber driver and not a doctor as being purported, said some police officers framed him of possessing weed and cocaine last week Friday while on the Trasacco road while on his way home to Kwashieman.

“One of the officers, who is a Muslim swore that he could never plant drugs in a car. Then another officer started crying, saying that we are very sorry. We planted it in his car,” he was heard in parts of the audio saying.

The matter received massive reaction on social media, which drew the attention of the Police administration.

    http://backend.theindependentghana.com/police-launch-investigation-into-viral-audio-of-officers-allegedly-planting-substance-into-mans-vehicle/

In a press statement dated January 18, the Police noted that its preliminary investigations into the matter provide information contrary to what Patrick Asiedu has brought out to the public.

“Investigations into the matter and our initial checks at the stations mentioned in the audio, East Legon and the Accra Central Police Stations, have revealed that no such complaint had been made there.”

“The Police have also contacted the Narcotics Control Commission and the Ghana Armed Forces and both institutions have indicated that no such incident has come to their attention,” the statement added.

The Police in a statement on Thursday indicated that Patrick Asiedu, who has been arrested and in police custody, fabricated the story and alleged that the incident he narrated was not a personal experience but that of one of his passengers.

Reacting to the recent development, Bridget Otoo condemned Patrick Asiedu, who she described as a “fool” for destroying the tiniest opportunity for true victims of such incident to share their experience and be taken for their word.

She noted that falsely accusing the police on such sensitive issues would only embolden the corrupt officers who engage in unlawful activities.

    http://backend.theindependentghana.com/man-in-viral-audio-alleging-police-planted-narcotics-in-his-car-arrested/

“The police have found one scapegoat, they will milk everything out of him and I expect them to. We use our platform to advocate for people who don’t have a voice, when one fool does such a stupid thing, it emboldens all the corrupt officers.

“But what kind of disease will make a person make up such a story? When you do this, you destroy the any opportunity to make a change in @GhPoliceService and also genuine victims of of such crimes will find it hard to come forward and won’t be believed when they do!” she tweeted.

Prior to the Police’s findings, the media practitioner faulted the Police administration for failing to properly train its officers, whom she claimed planted narcotics into the vehicles of citizens.

“Your men are going round planting cocaine and weed in Peoples’s cars, and instead of dealing with it, you care about the word ‘some’!!

“Don’t take the word of @GhPoliceService over the victim. IGP should be ashamed of himself. You know the victim, your men have spoken to the victim,” she earlier shared.

It is assumed that she judged the police before they were able to probe the matter because she had reached out to the suspect, Patrick Asiedu, who maintained his stance that he was framed.

“I personally spoke to the victim more than once after a medical doctor gave me his contact to help him, I felt the need to add my voice to help him from being silenced by an institution that has ranked consistently as the most corrupt in Ghana,” she recently tweeted.

Meanwhile, the Police has assured that Patrick Asiedu will be made to face the law for his actions.

  • Guardiola takes responsibility for Haaland’s scoring blip

Guardiola takes responsibility for Haaland’s scoring blip

Erling Haaland’s recent scoring slump has been acknowledged by Pep Guardiola, who is eager to tackle the issue of putting both the striker and his Manchester City team back on track.

Haaland has gone three games without scoring, which is the longest scoring drought he has experienced since moving to City from Borussia Dortmund before the 2022–23 season.

He broke numerous records while scoring 27 goals in his first 21 games, but he was unable to register a shot against Chelsea, Southampton, or Manchester United.

Guardiola claims it is his responsibility to make sure the talented striker is being supported by his teammates rather than focusing on what Haaland is doing incorrectly all of a sudden.

    http://backend.theindependentghana.com/onuoha-claims-haaland-faces-fight-to-maintain-goalscoring-form/

“We have our game, we have our principles but the way we played in last two games didn’t help Erling to score,” Guardiola said.

“In the build-up you can be wider, but in the final third you have to have players in the middle. If Erling is not there, we are not going to score goals.

“In the past we have always had incredible movements in the final third, in the small spaces. Now, in the last two games, we haven’t had it.

“I would say it was my fault. I didn’t make them understand the way we have to attack. We need runners, not just Erling.

“If we had just Erling he would be controlled by two or three central defenders. We need more players in those positions, definitely. We have done it. We have to do it more often.”

    http://backend.theindependentghana.com/man-city-to-assess-haaland-fitness-ahead-of-leicester-clash/

In three years with Dortmund and City, Haaland has only ever gone more than three league games without scoring—a stretch of five games in March and April of last season.

The 22-year-small old’s decline in form has occurred at the same time as City has had a difficult stretch, losing two straight games before playing Tottenham in the Premier League on Thursday.

Arsenal is eight points ahead of City, who must win to avoid going three home league games without a victory for the first time since December 2016.

“I prefer to be eight points in front but I like to handle this situation, I love it,” Guardiola added. “I have to find something to make the team better. I’m the man responsible.

“When the players don’t play good, if they don’t have the desire to do it, it is because something is wrong in my decisions. We have to find it.

“People don’t think about the memories, how good we were. When I die, people will talk about how good Pep was. That’s for sure.

“But since we are here, people expect us to perform well, win the games and try to find the way. Otherwise – Pep out.

“This is how our jobs work – and I want Pep in! I want to stay here, this is what I want, and for that we have to win games and be there in all the competitions.”

Despite exiting the EFL Cup to Southampton last week before letting a lead slip in their league loss at United, Guardiola insists his players are not struggling for motivation.

“The situation is that, by our standards, people believe and believe and oh… what’s happened? Why are City not on the top of league? But it can happen,” Guardiola said.

“The mentality – it’s not about that. You see the game against United or Chelsea, we play really well. The quality of the dressing room is exceptional. I don’t have doubts.”

  • Fake CFA 80m currency intercepted by GRA

Fake CFA 80m currency intercepted by GRA

According to the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), 80 million counterfeit notes bearing the CFA inscription have been intercepted.

Customs reports that the suspect, identified as Arimu Timothy Adipoe, was apprehended at one of the checkpoints along the Aflao border on a motorcycle with the assistance of other security services when he tried to enter the nation with the phony currency.

Addressing the press, the Commissioner in charge of customs division, Seidu Iddrisu Iddisah explained that “Yesterday  [Tuesday] around 4pm, our officers on duty at the Anapro road, under the Aflao connection stopped an Okada rider with passenger carrying a backpack

He said such fake currencies contribute negatively to the economy and further depreciate the Ghana cedis when exchanged for genuine ones.

    http://backend.theindependentghana.com/enforce-ban-on-grains-soya-beans-export-gra-to-customs-division/

“He [suspect] will change the fake CFA into naira, get genuine currency and send it back, and we will be losing foreign exchange and will be circulating fake foreign currency in our system,” the Commissioner in charge of customs division stated.

Seidu Iddrisu said further investigation will establish the motive for importing fake currency into the country.

“Investigation is going on, we have cooperation with other agencies, so if it means contacting the Nigerian customs we will do it,” he indicated.

  • Ratcliffe enters United takeover race

    Ratcliffe enters United takeover race

The Glazers have been deeply unpopular among supporters throughout their time as custodians, but new ownership appears to be on the horizon.

British billionaire Ratcliffe, a United fan, registered an interest publicly last August having failed in a last-gasp bid to buy Chelsea three months earlier.

Ratcliffe is seemingly aiming to be in the running from the start this time, with the 70-year-old – who also owns Ligue 1 club Nice – the first come forward as a prospective buyer.

“We have formally put ourselves into the process,” an INEOS spokesperson said.

Ratcliffe has a net worth of $15.5billion (£12.7billion), according to Forbes, having made most of his fortune since founding chemicals giant INEOS in 1998.

The process to purchase Manchester United from the Glazer family has begun with Jim Ratcliffe’s company, INEOS.

    http://backend.theindependentghana.com/marcus-rashford-scores-derby-winner-as-manchester-united-beat-city/

In November, the Glazers declared they were looking into “strategic alternatives” for United.

The potential for additional investment in the Premier League club or “a sale” were two of the ideas mentioned at the time.

Malcolm Glazer acquired his initial interest in United in September 2003 and eventually completed a contentious leveraged buyout of the company in 2005.

Due to the fact that a large portion of the money necessary to close the acquisition was borrowed against the assets of the club, his takeover left United deeply in debt.

  • Jokic outduels Lillard in Nuggets win

Jokic outduels Lillard in Nuggets win

Superstar Nikola Jokic of the Denver Nuggets advanced toward a third straight MVP award by dominating the Portland Trail Blazers in a 122-113 victory on Tuesday.

Jokic was unstoppable on offense, scoring 36 points on 13 of 14 shots, collecting 12 rebounds, and dishing out 10 assists.

He accomplished this by recording multiple triple-doubles of 35 points while shooting at least 90% from the field, making him the only player in NBA history to do it. The only other player with even one of these games is Hall of Famer Wilt Chamberlain.

Jokic was supported well by Michael Porter Jr, who scored 23 points on nine-of-13 shooting, while Jamal Murray chipped in 17 points (six-of-15), seven assists, five rebounds and two steals.

For the Blazers, it was another spectacular showing from the franchise’s all-time scoring leader as Damian Lillard had a game-high 44 points on 12-of-20 shooting with eight assists.

It continued a blistering run of form for Lillard, who is averaging a league-leading 39 points per game across his past six outings, although Portland have only been able to convert his stellar play into two wins from six.

With the victory, the Nuggets are now alone atop the Western Conference with a record of 31-13, which the Memphis Grizzlies can tie if they can secure their 11th consecutive win when they face the Cleveland Cavaliers on Wednesday.

Holiday delivers for the Giannis-less Bucks

Jrue Holiday has set a new season-high points total in back-to-back games after putting up 37 in the Milwaukee Bucks’ 130-122 triumph at home against the Toronto Raptors.

Holiday scored a season-high 35 on Monday against the Indiana Pacers in the first leg of the Bucks’ back-to-back, and he followed it up with 37 against the Raptors.

He shot 16-of-26 from the field while adding seven assists, six rebounds, two steals and a block, and Fred VanVleet was just as good for Toronto.

VanVleet tied his season-high by scoring 39 points on 15-of-28 shooting, with nine rebounds and seven assists.

The Bucks are now 29-16 and occupy the second seed in the Eastern Conference.

    Embiid bullies the Clippers

Joel Embiid was too big and too strong on his way to a game-high 41 points in the Philadelphia 76ers’ 120-110 road win against the Los Angeles Clippers.

Embiid shot 12-of-22 from the field and 15-of-18 from the free throw line while adding nine rebounds, three assists and two blocks in a comprehensive performance.

Tobias Harris was sharp in a supporting role, snatching five steals in the first half while scoring 20 points on efficient eight-of-12 shooting.

For the Clippers, Kawhi Leonard made it five consecutive games with at least 24 points and a steal as he begins to recapture his All-NBA form following a string of injuries.

  • Cavs come to town as Grizzlies seek franchise-record 11th consecutive win

Cavs come to town as Grizzlies seek franchise-record 11th consecutive win

When the Memphis Grizzlies visit the Cleveland Cavaliers on Wednesday, they will have a chance to match their longest winning run in team history.

The Grizzlies’ winning streak currently stands at 10, and after Monday’s 30-point drubbing of the Phoenix Suns, they are just one victory away from matching the 11-game streak from the 2014–15 season, which featured Marc Gasol and Zach Randolph and was matched last season.

The Grizzlies have been dominant during their last ten games, dominating on both sides of the floor with the highest defensive rating in the NBA (allowing only 106.5 points per 100 possessions) and third-best offensive rating of 119.9 points per 100 possessions.

Meanwhile, the team the Grizzlies overtook to snatch top spot in the defensive rankings was the Cavaliers, who still sit second for the season.

Another key indicator for the true contenders is net rating – which measures how much better a team’s offensive rating is compared to their defense – and both of these sides have excelled through the first half of the season. The Grizzlies sit second overall with a net rating of 5.8, while the Cavaliers are third at 4.7.

Two very similar teams, both the Cavaliers and the Grizzlies utilise two defensive anchors in their starting line-up, leaning away from the more prevalent “small ball” roster constructions seen around the league.

For the Grizzlies, Steven Adams is arguably the strongest rebounder in the league while Jaren Jackson Jr leads the NBA in blocks per game at 3.3. On the Cavaliers’ side, All-Star Jarrett Allen and defensive prodigy Evan Mobley roam the interior.

While these sides are almost identical defensively, the way they attack on offense, particularly through their star players, could decide their fate.

Grizzlies point guard Ja Morant is, without a doubt, one of the best guards in league history when it comes to finishing at the rim. He is averaging five makes per game within five feet of the basket – the only guard in the league to do so – while converting at a terrific 61 per cent clip.

The problem with that is how well both of these teams protect the basket, as it creates the question of what happens when an unstoppable force – Morant – meets an immovable object – the rim protection of Allen and Mobley.

On the other hand, the combination of Darius Garland and Donovan Mitchell for the Cavaliers are far more malleable with the way they create their offense.

  • Leeds expected to march into the fourth round

Leeds expected to march into the fourth round

Jesse Marsch asserts that struggling Leeds will put everything on the line to defeat Cardiff tonight.

The Whites overcame a two-goal deficit earlier this month to force a rematch in their FA Cup third-round match against the Championship team.

And Marsch has assured the Elland Road crowd that his players are up for the battle, despite the fact that he could probably do without the distraction of a cup tournament at a time when his team is only two points above the Premier League relegation zone.

He said: “We’re absolutely going out to win the match. We need to go match by match now in the league and the FA Cup.

“It won’t be easy but we’re at home. For me, we need to get another complete performance, we need conviction, we need a win.”

Joel Bagan was given the boot in the 80th minute, and Cardiff concluded the first game with 10 men.

When he was dismissed, the hosts had a 2-1 advantage, but a dramatic late Sonny Perkins goal prevented Marsch’s team from making a humiliating early exit.

And the 49-year-old American anticipates a stronger Bluebirds team for this evening’s game against the team without a manager.

Jesse Marsch has not always enjoyed himself in the Leeds dugout

Jesse Marsch has not always enjoyed himself in the Leeds dugout

He added: “We dug ourselves a hole in that match. But by many standards, in the second half, we were absolutely dominant.

“I think we’ll see a stronger side. They played a lot of reserve players [in the first match], so I think we will see more of the team that they played against Wigan at the weekend.

“But I think where we are in this tournament, we can have hope to handle our business.”

With Mark Hudson relieved of his duties in the wake of Cardiff’s 1-1 draw with the Latics last Sunday, Dean Whitehead has been placed in charge of first-team affairs on an interim basis.

And the former Sunderland and Stoke midfielder is confident his side will cope with the intense atmosphere that awaits in Yorkshire.

Whitehead, 41, said: “The boys are ready. Everybody is fit and we’re looking forward to it. It’s a good game for us.

“The atmosphere is going to be really good and we’ve got to put in a performance for our travelling supporters.

“It’s an amazing amount of people who are going to come and support us on a Wednesday night away in Leeds. We have to wear the shirt with pride.”

Leeds vs Cardiff kicks off at 7.45pm and viewers can follow the action live on ITV4 and ITVX.

The winners of tonight’s clash will face Accrington Stanley or Boreham Wood in the FA Cup fourth round.

Saudi businessman pays $2.6m for ticket to watch Ronaldo-Messi match

An official confirmed that a Saudi real estate tycoon who bid $2.6 million at auction got a ticket to see Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi square off in a friendly.

A select team made up of players from Ronaldo’s new team Al Nassr and their Saudi rivals Al Hilal will meet Messi’s Paris Saint-Germain on Thursday in Riyadh.

Ronaldo won’t have played any football in the kingdom since joining Al Nassr on a deal that extends through 2025 and is worth more than 200 million euros ($214 million), according to sources close to the club.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner will play his first Saudi Pro League game on Sunday for Al Nassr.

Turki al-Sheikh, a Royal Court advisor and the president of Saudi Arabia’s General Entertainment Authority, proposed a charity auction for an unique ticket that would come with benefits including access to the players’ locker rooms and opportunity for photos with them to promote Thursday’s friendly.

The auction ended at 11:30 p.m. (20:30 GMT) on Tuesday with bids starting at 1 million Saudi riyals ($266,000).

The winning bid of 10 million riyals ($2.6 million), made by Mushref al-Ghamdi, was subsequently revealed by Al-Sheikh on Twitter.

“Congratulations, you deserve it, and may God reward you with good,” Sheikh said.

The national charity initiative Ehsan is expected to benefit from the auction’s revenues.

Along with Messi, other PSG players expected to participate on Thursday include Kylian Mbappe of France and Achraf Hakimi, who helped Morocco become the first Arab and African team to advance past the quarterfinals of the World Cup last year in Qatar.

Salem al-Dawsari, who scored the winning goal in the Green Falcons’ shocking victory over Argentina in the World Cup group stage, is a member of the Saudi national team.

Le Graet denies moral and sexual harassment accusations

Noel Le Graet, president of the French Football Federation, has refuted claims of moral and sexual harassment after prosecutors acknowledged a Monday probe into his actions.

After being accused of inappropriate behavior by agent Sonia Souid, Le Graet last week took a temporary leave of absence from his position as president.

In an interview with RMC, Souid described how she thought Le Graet had been attracted to her sexually throughout their interactions between 2013 and 2017.

Additionally, the 81-year-old is charged with inappropriate behavior toward female staff. The publication where these accusations were made, So Foot magazine, was sued for defamation by the FFF.

Parisian prosecutors confirmed to Stats Perform on Tuesday that a probe into “sexual and moral harassment” began the day before.

Le Graet published a statement of his own in response, denying the accusations.

The release, published by AFP, said: “[Le Graet] denies all (the) accusations of moral or sexual harassment or any other criminal offences.

“[Le Graet] denounces these repeated announcements by way of the press, which intervene [in the case] before the mission of the inspection has even made its provisional report.

    http://backend.theindependentghana.com/le-graet-steps-away-from-fff-presidency/

“In this administrative investigation, which is clearly incriminating, Mr. Le Graet has had neither the opportunity to take cognizance of the elements concerning him, nor the opportunity to put forward his observations in defence, which is seriously prejudicial to the essential rights of the defence and the presumption of innocence.”

    2024 will certainly be a Bawumia-Mahama game – Annoh-Dompreh

The 2024 presidential election will undoubtedly feature a contest between Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and former President John Dramani Mahama for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), according to Majority Chief Whip in Parliament Frank Annoh-Dompreh.

This is despite the fact that neither the NPP nor the NDC have chosen their standard bearers for the election.

At least four party stalwarts from the NPP have expressed interest in serving as the party’s flagbearer.

They are Kennedy Agyapong, a lawmaker from Assin Central, Alan Kyerematen, a former trade and industry minister, Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, a former general secretary of the NPP, and Dr. Owusu Akoto Afriyie, a former minister of food and agriculture.

Dr. Bawumia has not yet publicly stated that he plans to run for office, although he most certainly will.

“It will certainly be between BMW( our hope): and JM( The spent force)!” he tweeted on Wednesday, January 18.

The Nsawam-Adoagyiri lawmaker further indicated that Dr Bawumia “is a gift to this Nation, let’s not take it for granted. Do away with your ‘Hatred’ for him.. He will rescue us, certainly. Dr.Bawumia, ever proud of him.”

Therefore, he cautioned Mr. Alan Kyeremanten’s followers against disparaging Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia as the party prepared to choose a flagbearer.

He made it clear that he disapproves of the behavior of some ardent Mr. Kyeremanten followers on social media platforms and noted that the damaging information they are spreading won’t benefit the party once its internal elections are over.

Felix Afena-Gyan, a Ghanaian international, came off the bench to score a header and the game-winning penalty for U.S. Cremonese against SSC Napoli on Tuesday night.

His club eliminated SSC Napoli from the Coppa Italia this season thanks to the pivotal goal.

Felix Afena-Gyan, who has lacked consistency since leaving AS Roma to join U.S. Cremonese, came on as a second-half substitute for his team in the away cup game today.

Charles Picket’s equalizer in the 18th minute gave the visitors a startling lead in the game.

Later in the first half before the break, goals from Juan Jesus and Giovanne Simeone turned things around for Napoli as the giants took a 2-1 lead into the break.

Thanks to the resilience of U.S Cremonese, the team forced the match to enter extra time courtesy of a late strike from Ghana striker Felix Afena-Gyan.

With no goal in extra time, U.S Cremonese stunned Napoli in the shootout to secure a 5-4 win.

Felix Afena-Gyan and his teammates are now through to the quarter-finals of this season’s Coppa Italia.

Klopp happy about Liverpool ‘passion’ in FA Cup win at Wolves

As a significantly altered team defeated Wolves 1-0 in a replay of the FA Cup third round at Molineux, Jurgen Klopp praised the return of the “passion” Liverpool had been missing.

Following an unexpected 3-0 Premier League loss at Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday, Reds manager Klopp made eight changes to his starting lineup.

One of the newcomers was Harvey Elliott, who ended up becoming the match-winner by scoring the lone goal with a breath-taking long-range shot in the 13th minute.

The holders will have the chance to take revenge on Brighton in a fourth-round meeting at the Amex Stadium with their first victory in four games.

    http://backend.theindependentghana.com/klopp-in-search-of-solutions-to-liverpool-low-point/

It was anything but a classic all-Premier League tie after a 2-2 draw at Anfield ensured the two sides had to do battle again, but Klopp was not concerned about entertainment value.

He told BBC Sport: “It feels like ages ago we had a feeling of winning and playing well. We had to fight hard at the end, which we controlled for long periods. It is great and the reaction we wanted to see.”

Klopp vowed he would not quit after the defeat to Brighton and urged his players to go “back to basics”.

The German was impressed with the way they responded to a painful loss last weekend.

“From the passion we showed, yes,” he said. “It is my job to help the boys and find the formation where they feel good from the start.

“Stefan Bajcetic and the whole midfield was really compact, so it was difficult for Wolves to find the key players like Joao Moutinho. I liked the game a lot.”

Elliott was named man of the match, but Klopp felt several of his players were candidates for the award.

He added: “It was good from Harvey Elliott, especially after an early knock to the ankle. He fought through, and the goal was exceptional.

“I had a few man of the match performances today. We played a really good first half, had good periods in the second, and in the end it was just passion to block the shots. A cup game, great.”

Suarez hits first-half hat-trick in debut Gremio win

Luis Suarez made his Gremio debut by scoring a hat-trick in the first half to help his new team win the Recopa Gaucha.

Suarez, a striker from Uruguay, joined the Brazilian team this month after briefly helping his hometown team Nacional win the World Cup in his native country.

Goals were something the 35-year-old promised when he agreed to a two-year deal with Gremio, and his debut more than delivered on that.

Tuesday’s Recopa encounter between Sao Luiz and Uruguay was a one-off, and Suarez’s three goals sealed a 4-1 victory before halftime.

Suarez hadn’t scored a hat-trick in the first half since December 2013, when he did so for Liverpool against Norwich City.

“Luisito’s story couldn’t start better here,” read Gremio’s Twitter page after Suarez had volleyed in his third.

  • Arsenal spoke to Mudryk before contacting us, Shakhtar CEO claims

Arsenal spoke to Mudryk before contacting us, Shakhtar CEO claims

Mykhaylo Mudryk and Arsenal had been in touch for around a month and a half before Arsenal contacted Shakhtar Donetsk, according to chief executive Sergei Palkin of the club.

On Sunday, the 22-year-old finalized a transfer to Chelsea, which allowed the Blues to sneak the deal past Arsenal for up to £89 million (four billion hryvnias).

Palkin claimed to have met with Arsenal representatives “three times,” but Chelsea was the only team to agree to the Ukrainian team’s financial demands.

Speaking to The Athletic, Palkin said: “Before Chelsea arrived, I did not know they were close, because I communicated with Arsenal in the same way as I had with Chelsea… I met Arsenal more times than Chelsea.

“Therefore, before this last meeting, Arsenal was close, or a little bit closer to this deal than Chelsea.”

He spoke of Arsenal’s lengthy attempts to convince the player, adding: “From my point of view, [this] is why everybody talked about Arsenal. It is because Arsenal contacted the player almost one and a half months before they contacted us.

    http://backend.theindependentghana.com/shakhtar-president-expresses-mixed-feelings-over-mudryks-chelsea-move/

“Can you imagine, for example, to have [Arsenal manager] Mikel Arteta, [Arsenal left-back and Ukraine international] Oleksandr Zinchenko and the sporting director [Edu] calling you, to have Arsenal calling you almost every day, every two days, every three days?

“If you talk about Chelsea, they called me at the end of December and asked if they can contact Mudryk because they are interested in him and want to talk with him. I said, ‘No problem, you can contact him’.

“The first time they contacted him was around the end of December or the start of January. They contacted the player and the agent of the player and they met the financial conditions.

“Why did many people around it have the impression that Mudryk was going to Arsenal? It is because Arsenal contacted him [first] and then Mudryk started to watch some games of Arsenal.

“But negotiations are negotiations. When you didn’t close everything, when you did not [close] the last dot, then you cannot finish the deal. It was just an outside visual impression that Mudryk [was] close to Arsenal.”

Palkin also confirmed Arsenal had also been willing to offer an overall figure of £89m, but that their final bid only included £62m up front, with £27m in add-ons.

“When we met Chelsea, we stayed all together,” he added. “For you to understand the context, it was for nine or 10 hours. They invited the player and explained to us the whole project.

“We realised that, yes, if you look right now, Chelsea have some kinds of problems but it is normal because they have a transition period from one owner to another. It is understandable.

“They would like to change a lot. So when they explain to you the whole story and you look for the next two, three, four, five years, then you see they have a serious project.

“I believe they will build one of the best clubs in the world because I am telling you, they are very serious in all directions: sports science, the stadium side, the commercial side, on all things. For us, they looked very ambitious.”

  • Weghorst says he is a good fit for Ten Hag and Man Utd

Weghorst says he is a good fit for Ten Hag and Man Utd

Wout Weghorst, a recent addition to Manchester United, is certain that Erik ten Hag’s pressing style of play at Old Trafford is a suitable fit for him.

On Friday, the Netherlands international signed a loan agreement with Burnley after United obtained his release from a brief stint with Besiktas in Turkey.

The following day, Weghorst watched as United overcame a goal down to defeat Manchester City 2-1 at Old Trafford in the Manchester derby. Bruno Fernandes equalized the score before Marcus Rashford scored the winning goal.

With a win, Erik ten Hag’s team closed the gap on second-placed City to just one point, underscoring the extraordinary change the new manager brought about at the club and how it appears he is maximizing the team’s potential.

However, since Cristiano Ronaldo’s contentious departure in November, they have frequently felt limited in terms of their attacking alternatives, and Weghorst recently became a surprising target.

While some fans may not have been thrilled with the addition of a forward who only contributed twice to Burnley’s relegation last season, the media dubbed him a “pressing monster” because he applied the fourth-most pressures (54.1) per 90 minutes in the league (minimum 1,000 minutes played) in 2021–22.

He believes this approach aligns itself to that of his new manager, as he told United’s official website: “I think [pressing] is something that’s one of my strengths. Especially without the ball, to put pressure on an opponent [and] be active.

“That’s something I am capable of and that’s also something in the way the trainer [Ten Hag] wants to play.

“He wants to play aggressive; he wants to go high on the pitch, try to recover the ball there, as quickly as possible, and I think I can help the team with that.”

Weghorst was considered a disappointment following his brief spell in the Premier League with Burnley, as his poor goals return did not match the expectations that came with his reputation.

The Clarets reportedly paid £12million (€14m) to Wolfsburg for the striker, but he averaged only one Premier League goal every 10 appearances and was loaned to Besiktas when Burnley dropped into the second tier.

He is desperate to prove a point upon his return to England.

    http://backend.theindependentghana.com/ferdinand-encourages-maguire-to-leave-man-utd/

“For me, it was not done, it was not finished,” he continued. “It didn’t work out the first time as I hoped and I’m really hungry to show myself, to help the team.

“Of course, we are on a really good track now. The last couple of weeks, months actually, it’s going really positive [at United] and I just want to contribute and give my best and give my all for the club and try to be a part of the successful [direction] we are going.”

In terms of the direction United are going, Weghorst has no doubt where he sees the destination being.

“Trophies. That’s quite easy. Trophies, and that’s also what the manager told me about, the expectations that are there.

“Also my role, that’s also something I want to bring. Like I said, I’m just going to give everything I have for the club to be successful, to win the games and, of course, to win trophies.

“We are still active in four competitions, so four trophies to go, that’s the only thing that’s counting, and I think also that fits for a big a club as United is.”

  • Klopp not ready to quit amid worrying Liverpool slump

Klopp not ready to quit amid worrying Liverpool slump

According to Jurgen Klopp, he is not “too loyal” to his players and will only quit Liverpool if necessary.

The Reds’ season has been underwhelming thus far, which was made worse by recent sloppy Premier League losses against Brentford and Brighton & Hove Albion.

Despite claims that there has been insufficient replenishing of a team that has been one of the most successful in Europe in recent seasons, Liverpool has a number of key players who have been with the club for most of Klopp’s seven years on Merseyside.

“I heard I’m too loyal, but I am not too loyal. The problem is too complex. If you can then go out and bring in another player to replace him, then it makes sense,” manager Klopp said at a press conference. “But if you cannot bring anyone in, you cannot take anyone out.

“I am not too loyal. At [Borussia] Dortmund, it was clear when I left [in 2015], I said ‘something has to change here’. It is a different situation.

“Either the manager’s position changes or a lot of other things change. So, as far as I am concerned unless someone tells me, I will not go.

“I will be here for as long as I am wanted. If no one tells me to go, I will not go. So that means maybe there is a point where we have to change other stuff. We will see that, but that is something for the future. Like summer or whatever. Not now.

“I have space and time to think about it, we have to play better football now.”

Tuesday’s FA Cup third-round replay between Liverpool and Wolves at Molineux is a crucial matchup for Klopp’s club, which won the cup the previous year.

Klopp acknowledged that although it is doubtful Liverpool would make another move in the January transfer window after acquiring Dutch forward Cody Gakpo from PSV, it is not for lack of ambition.

The club’s supporters have been clamoring to recruit another midfielder, as Thiago Alcantara is the only one who has been signed on a permanent basis since 2018.

“We look outside as well,” Klopp said. “It’s not that we are stubborn and think that’s it, we’ll go with these boys until 2050 or whatever. That’s not how we see it, it’s all about what we can do and these kind of things – and what you want to do. More important is what you can do. It’s always the same, each year.

    http://backend.theindependentghana.com/klopp-in-search-of-solutions-to-liverpool-low-point/

“I cannot change my answers – if the solutions are out there for us, available and doable, of course we would bring in players to help. But we have an existing squad as well and we are underperforming, definitely, I know that. But I cannot sit here and blame everyone else, the players, all the time. It is my responsibility.

“We have limited options, but we have players with contracts here, they are not available. But if we bring in players, we cannot bring them all in the Premier League and Champions League list.”

  • Brazil World Cup exit ‘worse than losing a family member’, Richarlison

Brazil World Cup exit ‘worse than losing a family member’, Richarlison

Richarlison has opined that Croatia’s victory against Brazil in the World Cup quarterfinal was “worse than losing a family member.”

The Selecao, who were pre-tournament favorites, won Group G and destroyed South Korea 4-1 in the round of 16, raising hopes that they may win the championship for the first time since 2002.

However, their campaign was cut short in Qatar when they lost to Croatia on penalties in the quarterfinals because Marquinhos and Rodrygo failed to convert their spot-kicks.

    http://backend.theindependentghana.com/world-cup-2022-croatia-knock-out-brazil-to-reach-semis/

Many players were affected by the defeat, including Neymar, who had given Brazil the lead in extra time before Bruno Petkovic’s goal forced penalties. Neymar was seen crying on the field as Croatia celebrated their triumph.

Richarlison told ESPN: “It was a blow, I don’t know. I think it’s worse than losing a family member.

“It was difficult to recover. To this day, when I watch videos on my social networks, it makes me sad.

“But we have to move on. I’m still young, I think I still have one or two World Cups to go. I will keep working hard so that things start to flow again, the goals start to come out, which is what I know how to do on the field.”

Despite the disappointing end to the tournament, it was a strong World Cup for Richarlison, who was Brazil’s top scorer with three goals.

The Tottenham forward’s bicycle kick against Serbia won the goal of the tournament award and has also been nominated for the 2022 Puskas Award, handed out by FIFA to the best goal of a calendar year.

“Our goal was to be champion. I scored a beautiful goal, but I think that goal, let’s say, was not my goal,” Richarlison added. “We went there to raise the cup.

“But I’m also happy to have scored that great goal, even running for the Puskas. I was happy, because I think a lot of people started to know me more. It was very important in my career.”

21 members of Cameroon’s Under-17 squad disqualified over age fraud scandal

A new age fraud scandal has hit Cameroon after 21 members of their Under-17 team were banned due to the problem.

President Samuel Eto’o of Cameroon football federation was eager to get rid of the issue, so the federation called 44 players from eight different clubs for an investigation into possible age or identity fraud back in the summer.

But after the majority of the players chosen for this year’s UNIFACC tournament, which was played by the Under-17 teams of Central African Football Federations’ Union countries, were disqualified after failing MRI tests, Eto’o has been dealt another setback in his attempt to stop their age fraud crisis.

‘They were immediately removed from the group. Steps were immediately taken for their replacement.

‘This action is the result of strict instructions given by the President of FECAFOOT acting under the mandate of the COMEX, in order to put an end to the tampering with civil status records which have, in the past, tarnished the image of the apex body of the Cameroon football. FECAFOOT urges all actors, in particular educators, to ensure that the ages by category are respected.’

    http://backend.theindependentghana.com/world-cup-2022-samuel-etoo-apologizes-after-attacking-a-man-in-qatar/

This year, an age-group competition was announced by the Cameroon Football Federation.

The exams scan the player’s wrists and measure the growth of their bones to establish their age.

For concealing the list of chosen players for both their Under-20 and Under-17 teams, Cameroon has recently come under fire.

Concerns have also been raised over their roster for the 2019 African Nations Championships, as an official list of players has not to be made available before their first match on January 16.

African football has always struggled with age fraud, with claims of overage players clouding several of their youth level international victories.

Although accusations have been made frequently, it appears that the authorities have not made many efforts to look into them.

After being selected captain of the Riyadh ST XI for an exhibition game against Lionel Messi’s Paris St. Germain, officials revealed on Monday that Cristiano Ronaldo would play in Saudi Arabia for the first time since joining Al Nassr.

In the most recent installment of the storied international soccer rivalry, the 37-year-old Portuguese will captain a group of players from the Saudi clubs Al Hilal and Al Nassr against Messi’s PSG.

The eagerly awaited match, for which more than two million online tickets were reportedly requested, will occur on Thursday in Riyadh.

An auction that is scheduled to expire on Tuesday has already attracted bids of more than 10 million riyals ($2.66 million) for a VIP “Beyond Imagination” ticket to the game.

After receiving a one-match ban from the English Football Association for kicking a fan’s phone out of his hand in April, Ronaldo missed Al Nassr’s opening two domestic matches.

The Portuguese forward joined the Arab squad earlier this month with a contract that will last until 2025 and is worth, according to the media, more than €200 million.

When Al Nassr plays Al Ettifaq on Sunday, Ronaldo will make his professional debut in the Saudi Pro League.

Torres discloses Arsenal contact before World Cup

Prior to the World Cup, Arsenal reportedly made touch with Orlando City over Facundo Torres.

Since joining the league in January 2022, the 22-year-old has drawn attention, making 33 appearances while tallying nine goals and eight assists.

Ever since his days playing for Penarol in his native Uruguay, the Uruguayan international has been linked to a move to Europe, with Arsenal reportedly having a long-term interest in his talents.

The Gunners continue to look for players to boost their squad but missed out on Mykhaylo Mudryk to London rivals Chelsea, who swooped in to beat the Premier League leaders in the chase for the Ukraine winger.

Torres has opened the door for a fresh approach, expressing his desire to play in the Premier League.

“So, the conversation stayed there but now that I am back with the team, we will see where the conversation goes.

“I would love to play in Europe. It’s a dream I’ve had since I was a kid. At the moment I am focused on Orlando City.

Inter is one of the clubs reportedly interested in signing the Netherlands striker, who is anticipated to leave Barcelona this month.

Depay has struggled to find first-team opportunities since Robert Lewandowski was acquired by Barcelona; this season, he has made only two LaLiga starts.

LeBron reaches 38,000 career points as Lakers lose late to 76ers

On Sunday, as the Los Angeles Lakers lost to the Philadelphia 76ers 113-112, LeBron James passed Russell Westbrook as the second player to reach 38,000 career NBA points.

Joel Embiid missed a two-point attempt with 16 seconds left in the game, giving the Sixers a one-point lead. Westbrook recovered but was unable to get off a clean shot or pass away as the clock ran out due to Embiid and Georges Niang’s defense.

James’ noteworthy accomplishment of hitting the 38,000-point plateau in the first quarter was somewhat tarnished by the game’s outcome. James finished with 35 points, 10 assists, and 8 rebounds.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who has 38,387 career points, is the only other player in NBA history to surpass James in scoring. Next month, James is expected to surpass Abdul-Jabbar in scoring.

The Sixers’ Joel Embiid led all scorers with 35 points on 12-of-21 shooting from the field and two three-pointers in a close contest. In addition, Embiid had four assists and 11 rebounds. James Harden made a 24 point, 7 rebound, and 13 assist contribution.

Westbrook contributed 20 points, 14 rebounds, 11 assists, but also four mistakes in 34 minutes of bench time. That was the 198th triple-double of Westbrook’s career.

  • Klopp in search of solutions to Liverpool ‘low point’

Klopp in search of solutions to Liverpool ‘low point’

Eight months after Liverpool came dangerously close to a historically rare quadruple, Reds manager Jurgen Klopp is fighting to prevent his team’s problematic season from collapsing.

After suffering a humiliating 3-0 loss at Brighton on Saturday, Klopp’s team is now languishing in ninth place in the Premier League, which has caused some soul-searching at Anfield.

In advance of Tuesday’s FA Cup third-round rematch between Liverpool and Wolves, AFP Sport examines the causes of the slump.

Liverpool’s quest for four titles last season came to a disappointing end as Real Madrid won the Champions League final and Manchester City won the Premier League crown.

And this season, Liverpool is still paying for that historic bid, which helped the club win the FA and League Cup finals.

Following a 63-game season in which the Reds played every possible match in all four competitions, Klopp acknowledged on Friday that Liverpool had displayed signs of being mentally and physically fatigued.

“It must have (had an effect). We can say that now,” Klopp said when asked about Liverpool’s fatigue.

“There was no book written about it, there was no data about it, because nobody played that many games before.”

The most visible sign of the debilitating effect of Liverpool’s marathon season has been in the Anfield treatment room – crammed with injured stars throughout this term.

Klopp’s forward line for the match at Brighton was missing a host of stars with Luis Diaz, Diogo Jota, Darwin Nunez and Roberto Firmino all absent, while centre-back Virgil van Dijk was also sidelined.

    AGEING MIDFIELD

Klopp’s desire for a frenetic game-plan based on relentlessly pressing Liverpool’s opponents into submission is best suited to a midfield packed with energetic workaholics.

For most of his reign at Liverpool that is exactly what he got from Jordan Henderson, Fabinho and James Milner as his “heavy metal” philosophy delivered Premier League and Champions League glory.

Now, however, Liverpool are beginning to pay the price for failing to freshen up a midfield that is showing its age.

Henderson (32), Milner (37), Thiago Alcantara (31) and Fabinho (29) are unable to consistently carry out Klopp’s demands, while the younger Naby Keita and Curtis Jones have been sidelined by injuries.

“It’s a real low point for us as a team,” Liverpool captain Henderson said. “We are low on confidence. You can see that when we’re playing, the energy levels are low. We need to stay together.”

    http://backend.theindependentghana.com/youngster-morton-signs-long-term-deal-with-liverpool/

    MISSING MANE

Sadio Mane’s value to Liverpool was never in doubt but it is still surprising how much the Senegal star has been missed since joining Bayern Munich last year.

With Mane roaming across Liverpool’s front line there was more than one dangerman for opponents to focus on, allowing acres of space for Mohamed Salah to exploit.

Mane’s lethal finishing, creativity and work-rate made him indispensable and Klopp has yet to replace his output despite bringing in Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo in the past 12 months.

Netherlands forward Gakpo arrived from PSV Eindhoven earlier this month despite interest from Manchester United after shining at the World Cup.

The 23-year-old is without a goal in his first two appearances, but Klopp will hope he can fill Mane’s boots in time.

    TROUBLE AT THE TOP

Klopp has been coy when asked about the impact of the Fenway Sports Group’s decision to put Liverpool up for sale in November, but there is no doubt the potential for a boardroom change has created uncertainty at Anfield.

Although US-based FSG sanctioned Klopp’s £40-million move for Gakpo, it was notable that the German has quietly grumbled about Liverpool’s transfer investment compared with their main Premier League rivals.

Klopp reportedly wanted Aurelien Tchouameni in the close season but the France midfielder went to Real Madrid instead, while Borussia Dortmund’s England star Jude Bellingham is understood to be another top target.

  • Villa to sign Colombia forward Duran

Villa to sign Colombia forward Duran

Jhon Duran, a Colombian international, will be transferred by Aston Villa to Chicago Fire, the Premier League club announced on Monday.

The 19-year-old, who has three caps, led Chicago Fire to a Major League Soccer championship last year with eight goals (MLS).

The deal might be valued up to $22 million, according to a report on the American league’s official website, which cited sources.

“The deal is subject to the player passing a medical, agreeing personal terms and obtaining the necessary work visa,” Villa said in a statement.

The Midlands team, which has 25 points after 19 games and is now ranked 11th in the Premier League, will go to Southampton on Saturday. Alex Moreno, a Spanish left back, was acquired by Villa earlier this month from Real Betis.

Richarlison blames ‘disrespectful’ Ramsdale for heated derby ending

Aaron Ramsdale was called “disrespectful” by Tottenham forward Richarlison after the tense circumstances at the end of the north London derby on Sunday.

After the final whistle sounded to signal a 2-0 victory for the Gunners, the Arsenal goalkeeper turned to the home crowd and kissed the badge on his shirt. Richarlison sprinted over to confront him before a Spurs supporter managed to stand on the advertising hoardings and kick Ramsdale in the back as he went to get his water bottle.

Before Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta rushed his squad away to celebrate with the away fans after the victory that gave them an eight-point lead at the top of the Premier League, several players from both teams got involved.

    http://backend.theindependentghana.com/fan-kicking-ramsdale-completely-unacceptable-pfa-reacts/

Speaking to ESPN, Richarlison explained why he reacted in the manner he did to Ramsdale, saying: “What I really didn’t like was their goalkeeper going to celebrate in front of our fans. It’s kind of disrespectful to our fans. He has his fans, he has to go celebrate with his fans, not be cute with our fans.

“People know that we tried to do our best, but you have to respect other teams. [Ramsdale] lacked respect there, and I went there to charge [against] him.”

It was not the only time the former Watford and Everton player showed displeasure during the game, including moments with fellow Brazilians Gabriel Martinelli and Gabriel Magalhaes, though he later regretted his shunning of Martinelli when he offered his hand prior to taking a corner.

“I want to apologise to him,” he said. “He put his hand out and I didn’t. Like it or not, he is my Brazil team-mate. This is part of it, it’s a derby, we were hot headed.

“With [Magalhaes], I argued a little because he was holding up the game. He ended up getting a yellow [for time-wasting], and I said to him: ‘Let’s play, let’s play’. And he was holding up the game.”

Tottenham released a statement after the game saying they were “appalled by the behaviour” of the supporter who attacked Ramsdale and confirmed they would be “working with the Met Police, Arsenal and Aaron Ramsdale to take the strongest possible action, including an immediate ban from Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.”

  • NCA grants conditional approval for transfer of majority shares in Vodafone Ghana to Telecel

NCA grants conditional approval for transfer of majority shares in Vodafone Ghana to Telecel

The transfer of Vodafone International Holdings B.V.’s 70% ownership stake in Ghana Telecommunications Company Limited (Vodafone Ghana) to Telecel Group has received conditional permission from the National Communications Authority (NCA).

This is dependent on the seller making certain adjustments and the buyer giving the NCA certain assurances.

The NCA in a statement confirmed that the revised proposal from the buyer “now meets the regulatory threshold and hence has granted conditional approval for the transfer of shares to the Buyer including the submission of strategies for employee retention.”

In order to ensure a smooth transition and service continuity, it gave the general public and all stakeholders the assurance that it would keep working with Vodafone Ghana and the buyer to complete all outstanding regulatory procedures.

    http://backend.theindependentghana.com/telecel-to-renegotiate-for-stake-in-vodafone-ghana-after-government-rejects-initial-proposal/

It would be recalled that in January 2022, Vodafone Ghana submitted a request to the NCA for the sale of 70% of the company’s majority shares, which were held by the seller, to the buyer.

The Buyer and Vodafone Ghana were both involved in the National Communications Authority’s evaluation of the application based on numerous criteria.

At the time, the NCA came to the conclusion that the request did not satisfy the legal requirements for approval to be given.

Following the NCA’s decision, the buyer resubmitted a revised financial and technical proposal in December 2022 which demonstrated the needed capital investment to extend the deployment of 4G and launch innovative Fintech solutions.

The NCA found that the revised proposal provided more clarity and certainty in terms of the funding required for the acquisition and the commitments from both the Seller and Buyer.

In addition, the Buyer has strengthened the overall governance and management team and made firm commitments to meeting the regulatory requirements of the NCA.

    Nana Agradaa gets arrested again

Evangelist Patricia Oduro Koranteng, also known as Nana Agradaa, the founder and head of Heaven Way Champion Ministries and has once again been detained by the Police.

Oman Channel reported that Agradaa, who is charged with numerous crimes in several courts, was detained on January 16, 2023, during an appearance before Accra Circuit Court 4.

Agradaa’s case was postponed by the court on Monday to Friday, January 20, 2023, but before she could leave the courthouse, the police arrested her in connection with another case.

Although the reason for her detention has not yet been revealed, a video posted by Oman Channel shows Agradaa expressing her annoyance as she was being taken away.

“I am going with them (the police) so when you go, tell them that the case with Appiah which is in court was called today, it was adjourned but they are arresting me again because of the case with Appiah,” she is heard issuing parting orders to her family and sympathisers before the police team led her away.

Last week, the police prayed an Accra Circuit Court to issue a bench warrant for the arrest of Nana Agradaa for failing to appear in court.

At an Accra Circuit Court on Wednesday, January 10, 2023, Superintendent of Police, Sylvester Asare, informed the Court that since Nana Agradaa was granted bail with conditions set out by the Court, she has defied the court’s order and that efforts to make her comply by the court’s order had been difficult.

    http://backend.theindependentghana.com/prosecutors-request-more-time-to-file-documents-for-agradaas-case/

According to the prosecution, Nana Agradaa aka Evangelist Mama Pat, was not cooperating with the Police. The prosecution submitted that the only way to compel the accused person to appear in court was for the Court to issue a bench warrant.

The court refused the police request but admonished the lawyer for Nana Agradaa to advise their client.

Nana Agradaa has three different cases before three Circuit Courts in Accra on various counts of defrauding by false pretences and charlatanic advertisement in the media.

She is also facing trial for her alleged role in the assault of one Prophet Akwasi Appiah, alias Appiah Biblical in 2020.

  • Xavi wins first major trophy with Blaugrana

Xavi wins first major trophy with Blaugrana

In the Supercopa de Espana final, Gavi scored one goal and assisted on two more as Barcelona defeated Real Madrid 3-1, giving Xavi his first significant victory.

In a lopsided El Clasico match on Sunday in Riyadh, outstanding teenager Gavi opened the scoring after being picked out by Robert Lewandowski.

Just before halftime at the King Fahd Stadium, Gavi then put one on a plate for Lewandowski to increase the Blaugrana’s lead. The offensive midfielder then set up Pedri to make it 3-0 after the break.

European and LaLiga champions Real Madrid were completely outmatched by their fierce rivals, who won the Supercopa for the record-extending 14th time and secured their first major victory since club legend Xavi was appointed as head coach in November 2021, despite Karim Benzema’s late consolation goal.

Lewandowski’s shot was expertly deflected against the post by Thibaut Courtois, and Alejandro Balde’s follow-up shot was wildly off-target.

Following Benzema’s header from Ferland Mendy’s cross, the Blaugrana deservedly seized the lead in the 33rd minute as Los Blancos botched their attempt to play out from the back.

Sergio Busquets pounced on a sloppy pass from Antonio Rudiger and Lewandowski set up Gavi, who beat Courtois with a composed left-foot finish.

Gavi returned the favour just before the break, racing away after being played in by Frenkie de Jong and playing the ball across the face of the goal to give Lewandowski a tap-in following more poor defending.

Barca carried on where they left off following the interval, Courtois coming to Madrid’s rescue by denying Ousmane Dembele and Lewandowski.

It came as no surprise when the Catalan giants struck again 69 minutes in, Pedri arriving at the back post to turn in another pinpoint pass from the brilliant Gavi after Los Blancos were caught in possession yet again.

Marc-Andre ter Stegen kept out Rodrygo’s drive with an excellent one-handed save and although Benzema fired home clinically in stoppage time, Barca were already out of sight and there only concern would be Ronald Araujo limping off late on.

    http://backend.theindependentghana.com/copa-del-rey-barcelona-drawn-against-ceuta/

What does it mean? Barca seal Xavi’s first trophy in style

Barca outplayed Madrid to secure their first major trophy since lifting the Copa del Rey in April 2021, making a statement as they also attempt to take the LaLiga title off Madrid – holding a three-point lead at the top of the table.

Los Blancos beat the Blaugrana 3-1 in the league in October, but it was a different story on this occasion as they beat them for only the second time in nine Clasico encounters.

Madrid had won five consecutive finals in all competitions, but they were off the pace and did not do themselves any favours as they failed to cope with Barca’s intensity.

    Gavi a joy to watch

Aged just 18, Gavi has a huge career ahead of him and has maturity way beyond his years.

He set Barca on their way with a cool finish before turning provider for Lewandowski and Pedri. He created three chances and caused all sorts of problems, working hard off the ball and posing a huge threat when in possession.

    A Rud awakening

Rudiger had a torrid time at the heart of a shaky Madrid defence, his poor pass that was intended for Eduardo Camavinga leading to the opening goal.

The Germany centre-back was among a host of Madrid players who were not at the races in a slack display, which would be a worry for Carlo Ancelotti with the games coming thick and fast in the quest for more honours.

    What’s next?

Barca are away to third tier side Ceuta in the Copa del Rey on Thursday, when Madrid are likely to have a far more testing round-of-16 tie at Villarreal.

Scores of migrants rescued as boat drifts near Cape Verde

Eighty-eight individuals who had been lost at sea have reportedly been rescued, according to state media in Cape Verde.

Two of the migrants perished inside the motorized wooden boat that was discovered off the Boa Vista coast of Cape Verde.

According to a local press source cited by the AFP news agency, six of the migrants were sent to the hospital due to dehydration.

The migrants are reportedly from Sierra Leone, Senegal, The Gambia, and Guinea-Bissau.

    http://backend.theindependentghana.com/cape-verde-to-rename-national-stadium-after-pele/

They apparently departed The Gambia more than three weeks ago on their way to the Spanish Canary Islands.

The vessel drifted hundreds of kilometres out to sea after the engine broke down and was spotted off Boa Vista by a lighthouse keeper on Saturday.

In recent years there has been an increase in the number of West African migrants trying to reach Europe via the Atlantic Ocean.

This is partly because of better policing on other routes and the dangers of travelling overland through Libya.

Spanish officials say last year more than 15,000 migrants arrived in the Canary Islands by boat.

Rafael Nadal defeated Jack Draper 7-5 2-6 6-4 6-1 to earn his first victory of the year and start the Australian Open title defense.

The top seed did not have an easy time against the Briton, but in the end, the 36-year-maturity old’s and stamina were the deciding factors because Draper, who is 15 years Nadal’s junior, later in the match appeared to be severely afflicted by cramp.

Nadal entered the match having lost six of his previous seven matches at the tour level, but he took the upper hand when he broke the big-serving Draper at 6-5 in the first set.

As a result, Nadal increased his lead to 4-1. However, the Spaniard did not always appear to be playing with the utmost confidence, as some unusual mistakes allowed Draper to come back and tie the score at 4-4.

Despite Draper breaking service in the first game of the fourth set, Nadal was able to break again to win the set 6-4. Draper’s legs were visibly beginning to hamper his movement and serve, and Nadal found it relatively easy to secure the victory.

  • GRA exceeds its 2022 revenue target

GRA exceeds its 2022 revenue target

The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) finished 2022 by collecting more taxes than it had hoped to.

Rev. Dr. Ammishaddai Owusu-Amoah, Commissioner-General of the GRA, said that the GRA collected ¢3.6 billion more than the 2022 objective.

The nominal rise over the tax revenue gathered in the fiscal year 2021 for this is 31.5 percent.

The GRA was expected to earn $¢80.3 billion for the 2022 budget.

Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, however, lowered the aim downward in the Mid-Year Budget Review to ¢71.94 billion, a decrease of ¢8.36 billion.

The GRA reported nominal growth of 28.9% and 38.4% for domestic tax collections and customs revenue, respectively.

In contrast to the target of ¢51.75 billion, the total tax revenue collected by the Domestic Tax Revenue Division in 2022 was ¢53.28 billion, a positive divergence of ¢1.53 billion (3%).

Whilst the Customs Division collected ¢22.26 billion as against a target of ¢20.20 billion also exceeding the target by ¢2.06 billion.

    http://backend.theindependentghana.com/gra-bills-mtn-ghana-us773-million-for-2014-2018-back-taxes-2/

    Reasons for tax mobilized

Providing some explanations, Rev. Owusu-Amoah said that the target was achieved mainly as a result of rigorous efforts made by the staff of the GRA as well as some new measures which brought about transparency and efficiency in tax administration.

He also linked the performance to enhance revenue mobilization efforts introduced by the GRA.

“The GRA rolled out some initiatives which included the implementation of the 2.5 percent increase in the Value Added Tax (VAT) rate, Reduction in the Electronic Transfer Levy (E-Levy) rate to 1% and resumption of collection of Vehicle Income Tax (VIT)”.

The rest are Resumption of collection of Tax Stamp, Complete reversal of the discount of import values of general goods & Home Delivery Values of vehicles and Partnering the MMDAs in the collection of property rates.

The Commissioner General said that these revenue measures will go a long way to complement the authority’s efforts in achieving the revenue target for 2023.

According to sources, the Ministry of Education is working on instituting a Dean of Disciplinary Affairs in the various senior high schools across the country.

Public Relations Officer of the Education Ministry, Kwesi Kwarteng, who made this known, noted that presence of such an office will help quell indiscipline happening in secondary schools.

Speaking to the media, Mr Kwarteng indicated that the Dean will collaborate with the Guidance and Counselling unit in each school.

The creation of a Dean of Disciplinary Affairs comes at a time when the Ghana Education Service (GES) and Chiana SHS are addressing a case of indiscipline.

The first consignment of the Gold for Oil Policy by the government has arrived at the Tema Port.

According to reports, the 41,000 metric tonnes of the petroleum products delivered by SCF YENISEI has been discharged into the receptacles of the Bulk Oil Storage and Transportation Company (BOST).

The fuel product valued at $40 million will be sold by BOST to bulk distributing companies (BDCs) across the country. Sources also say BOST would sell the product to the BDCs, proceeds paid to an escrow account at the Bank of Ghana for the procurement of gold for the process.

The policy Gold for Oil Policy has been instituted to stem the increasing depreciation of the cedi against world major currencies, particularly the dollar.

In November 2022, the government announced plans to buy oil products with gold rather than US dollars.

    http://backend.theindependentghana.com/first-shipment-of-gold-for-oil-will-arrive-in-ghana-next-week/

Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, said that the move was meant to tackle dwindling foreign currency reserves coupled with demand for dollars by oil importers, which was weakening the local cedi and increasing living costs.

He added that using gold would prevent the exchange rate from directly impacting fuel or utility prices as domestic sellers would no longer need foreign exchange to import oil products.

Shakhtar president expresses ‘mixed feelings’ over Mudryk’s Chelsea move

Rinat Akhmetov, the president of Shakhtar Donetsk, had “mixed feelings” following Mykhailo Mudryk’s Sunday sale to Chelsea for a record sum.

Premier League champions and rivals from London, Arsenal, lost out to Chelsea in the race to sign Mudryk for a rumoured sum that might reach £89 million (€100 million).

Although Akhmetov was sad to see the Ukrainian international leave, he is looking forward to watching Mudryk succeed at Stamford Bridge, where he saw the Blues defeat Crystal Palace 1-0 on Sunday. The Ukrainian international is regarded as one of the most exciting prospects in world football.

Akhmetov told the club’s official website: “I have mixed feelings. In order to win European trophies, I should invite such footballers as Mudryk to our club, to our Ukrainian league and not send them to the best championships and the best clubs in the world.

  • Galtier fires reminder to PSG stars after defeat to Rennes

Galtier fires reminder to PSG stars after defeat to Rennes

Christophe Galtier has warned his World Cup players they need to regain their focus after Paris Saint-Germain suffered another heartbreaking Ligue 1 loss.

After losses to Lens and Rennes, who defeated PSG 1-0 on Sunday, PSG’s lead at the top of Ligue 1 has been reduced from seven to three points.

Given the superstars at his disposal, head coach Galtier will be held accountable for such domestic losses, and he is aware that both he and the team need to start performing at their peak once more.

Galtier told Prime Video: “I’m mainly disappointed with our performance. We didn’t create anything, we had very few favourable situations.

“We focused on having possession of the ball and we had far too many players who dropped back without having players high enough to secure the Rennes defensive line.”

Only one of PSG’s eight shots on goal, their fewest in a league game this year, was successful. The setback was their third in their past four league visits to Rennes, solidifying the Breton team as a bogey team for the capital heavyweights.

Galtier mentioned that Neymar and Lionel Messi struggled to find clear targets when trying to advance the ball, and that problem persisted after Hugo Etikike was replaced by the ineffective Kylian Mbappe early in the second half.

The former coach of Lille, Saint-Etienne, and Nice claimed that PSG needed to turn things around “urgently.”

“Obviously we’re going to have to find a lot more play and connection between the lines,” he said. “We knew we would have a difficult match, and we had it. The opposing goalkeeper was barely troubled. We need to find a lot more rhythm, intensity and technical relationship between one another.

“I’m not going to talk about worry, but there has to be awareness. We can find a thousand excuses, but the World Cup is over.

“Even if we have been dispersed for eight weeks, we need to find cohesion and rhythm in our game.”

PSG will head to Saudi Arabia next to face a Riyadh Season Team, made up of players from Al Hilal and Al Nassr, in an exhibition game on Thursday.

Al Nassr’s new signing Cristiano Ronaldo could be involved in that game, but Galtier wants intense focus from his players when they get a chance to train on the getaway.

They do not have another Ligue 1 game until Reims visit the Parc des Princes on January 29, although there is a Coupe de France tie against minnows Pays de Cassel on January 23.

“We will have 10 days to work,” Galtier said.

Lens are their nearest challengers, but Marseille are only five points adrift of PSG.

“The championship is tight,” Galtier said. “I’m not used to looking at the standings but I’m concentrating on performance and I have work to do.”

Warren Zaire-Emery, at the age of 16 years and 313 days, became the youngest player in PSG’s history to start a Ligue 1 match. He played 72 minutes before being replaced by Carlos Soler.

Galtier will gather his players to show them video comparisons with how the team are performing now and how they played prior to the World Cup.

Mbappe was the World Cup’s top scorer, while Messi brilliantly captained Argentina to the trophy, being named player of the tournament. Such form has been mostly lacking since resuming PSG duties, but they are not the only ones culpable.

Goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, who was absent from Qatar 2022 after Italy failed to qualify, said PSG’s players are furious by their collective drop-off in performance.

“We are angry, and we have to bounce back immediately after this match, from this defeat, because we have no more time to lose,” Donnarumma said, quoted on the club’s website.

“It was an avoidable loss. They didn’t have many chances but we should have done more. We have to learn from this game. We are upset, but now we have to focus on the next game.”

Mudryk stated on the team’s website: “I’m thrilled to join Chelsea. At this point in my career, this is a really alluring challenge for me because it is a huge club in an amazing league.

“I’m excited to meet my new team-mates and I’m looking forward to working and learning under Graham Potter and his staff.”

The Gunners have been after the Ukrainian superstar for a number of months, and it was believed that everything had been worked out between the two sides except for the final transfer fee.

The Blues took advantage of the opportunity yesterday by sending co-owner Behdad Eghbali and director of global transfers Paul Winstanley to Turkey, where Shakhtar are presently training. Negotiations had reached a standstill.

Because Chelsea was willing to pay the full asking price, negotiations moved quickly, and Mudryk took the club’s private jet back to West London to do his physical last night.

Mikel Arteta will feel the pain of the transaction because a lot of time and effort was put into attempting to convince Mudryk to move to the Emirates.

The player had even been teasing a move to North London on his social media channels, liking posts from Arsenal fan accounts using the hashtag #FreeMudryk and posting videos of himself watching Arsenal matches.

Mudryk had also described Arteta as a “top coach” but will now hope to help under-fire Potter turn a disastrous season around at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea chairman Todd Boehly and the club’s co-controlling owner Behdad Eghbali said in a joint-statement: “We are delighted to welcome Mykhailo to Chelsea.

“He’s a hugely exciting talent who we believe will be a terrific addition to our squad both now and in the years to come.

“He will add further depth to our attack and we know he’ll get a very warm welcome to London.”

The Blues took the unusual move of announcing the signing midway through the first half of their Premier League home game with Crystal Palace on Sunday afternoon.

Arsenal extend lead to eight points after beating Tottenham

With a 2-0 derby victory at Tottenham, Arsenal extended their lead to eight points atop the Premier League.

Hugo Lloris’s own goal and Martin Odegaard’s 25-yard screamer were the two goals scored by Mikel Arteta’s team in the opening period.

Leaders Arsenal took advantage of the fact that defending champions Manchester City lost at Old Trafford on Saturday by defeating their North London rivals twice for the first time since 2014, giving them even more reason to believe they can win the championship for the first time in 19 years.

In-form Manchester United are Arsenal’s next opponents and they will now hope for a favour from Antonio Conte’s side, who travel to City on Thursday struggling to stay in the top four race and with Harry Kane still one goal short of Jimmy Greaves’ club scoring record.

There were unsavoury scenes at full-time with Aaron Ramsdale appearing to be kicked by a Tottenham supporter who jumped onto the advertising hoarding behind the goal of the South Stand before Arteta was able to lead his players away to celebrate with their own fans.

Both teams had injury concerns ahead of the match and while Dejan Kulusevski returned for Spurs, Rodrigo Bentancur missed out and Bukayo Saka was able to shake off his minor hamstring issue to start for the visitors.

Results elsewhere this weekend only heightened the importance of the match and it did not take long for the leaders to get into their groove with in-form Eddie Nketiah denied by Lloris in the seventh minute.

Lloris’ hesitancy in possession proved the catalyst for the chance and his next involvement produced the opener after another error.

Saka created space by the byline and his cross, which took a slight deflection off Ryan Sessegnon, fooled Lloris, who could only parry the ball into his own net.

It was not the first mistake by the Spurs captain in a big game this season but Tottenham almost levelled instantly when Sessegnon found Son Heung-min inside the area, only for Ramsdale to make a fine low stop with his legs.

It was a fleeting moment of attacking intent from Conte’s side who quickly found themselves back on the ropes.

Lloris saved from Odegaard soon after before Thomas Partey was denied another North London stunner by the woodwork.

Partey, who scored a superb curled effort in the 3-1 win in October, let fly with a volley from 25 yards that thundered against the base of the post after pin-ball in the Spurs area.

A second goal for Arsenal felt inevitable and it arrived eight minutes before the break.

William Saliba won the first ball before Partey and Saka combined to release Odegaard in space and the Gunners captain rifled into the bottom corner from range for his eighth goal this season.

It was fully deserved for the visitors and while Spurs improved, with Kane denied by Ramsdale, it remained 2-0 at the break.

The traditional second-half team were true to their word after the restart with Kulusevski firing over before Kane was denied by another fine Ramsdale save.

Even better was to follow from the Arsenal goalkeeper, who stuck out a boot to deflect a Sessegnon effort wide after a slick one-two with Kane.

Tempers started to boil over when substitute Richarlison had words with Brazil team-mate Gabriel Martinelli and Kulusevski collided with Arteta in the technical area.

Yet those incidents and a flurry of yellow cards only proved to take the sting out of Spurs’ attempted comeback.

Nketiah squandered the chance to seal the points with 21 minutes left when Lloris raced out quickly to save his effort following Granit Xhaka’s pass to keep Tottenham’s faint hopes alive.

Despite Richarlison and Ivan Perisic coming on and Kulusevski testing the excellent Ramsdale late on, Arsenal comfortable saw out the final exchanges to move 14 points clear of their rivals.

However, there were ugly scenes after the final whistle.

After an apparent exchange of words with Richarlison, Ramsdale was on the receiving end of a kick from a supporter. Xhaka appeared to be frustrated by developments, with Arteta stepping in and the Arsenal contingent moving to the other end of the stadium to celebrate with their fans.

  • City eye derby dominance in Pep’s 500th top-flight game as boss

On Saturday at Old Trafford, Manchester City will want to register a significant victory for Pep Guardiola by defeating Manchester United for the fourth time in a row.

In a remarkable career filled with trophies, Guardiola will manage his 500th match in the highly anticipated derby.

For the City manager, it will be more crucial that his team wins because it would reduce the gap between them and Premier League leaders Arsenal, who play in their own derby against Tottenham on Sunday, to only two points.

When the two teams played at the Etihad Stadium in October, the Red Devils were trounced 6-3 despite Guardiola’s team having defeated their arch rivals twice the season before.

Fourth-placed United are flying under Erik ten Hag, though, and a win over City – who suffered a shock EFL Cup defeat to Southampton on Wednesday – would leave them only a point behind their neighbours.

Stats Perform has used Opta data to preview a huge derby showdown.

    Another huge milestone for Pep

Guardiola has long since established himself as one of the best managers in the world, achieving great success with Barcelona, Bayern Munich and City.

He took charge of 152 LaLiga games during his Barca tenure, 102 in the Bundesliga with dominant Bayern and this will be his 246th Premier League match as City boss.

Guardiola has won 379 of the 499 top-flight encounters he has overseen, suffered 52 defeats and drawn 68 games.

With a win percentage rate of 76, he has the most victories and highest win rate – for managers who have taken charge of at least 100 games – of any boss in Europe’s big-five leagues since his first top-flight season in 2008-09.

    United on a roll

Ten Hag has lifted the gloom and there is more of an air of optimism at Old Trafford, with United having won eight consecutive games in all competitions.

Since and including their win over Liverpool on August 22, no team has earned more Premier League points than United’s tally of 35, winning 11 of their 15 games during that time.

The Red Devils have won all three Premier League games since the World Cup without conceding a goal and reached the EFL Cup semi-finals with a 3-0 win over Charlton Athletic on Tuesday.

City to add insult to injury by breaking scoring record?

Erling Haaland and Phil Foden scored hat-tricks as City put United to the sword just over three months ago.

Guardiola’s men could break their record for the number of goals scored against United in a season, which stands at eight established by 5-0 and 3-2 victories way back in the 1954-55 campaign.

The most goals the Red Devils have conceded against an opponent in a Premier League season is nine against Liverpool in 2021-22.

    Rashford can do no wrong

Marcus Rashford can do no wrong at the minute, scoring in every game since the World Cup.

He came off the bench to help himself to a late double in the win over Charlton, making it seven goals in six matches since returning from England duty in Qatar.

Rashford, who found the back of the net twice for the Three Lions in the World Cup, has scored 15 times this season for United – who are certainly not missing Cristiano Ronaldo.
