  • Red Bull announce Ricciardo return for 2023

Red Bull have announced the return of Daniel Ricciardo, who will be their third driver for the 2023 season.

The Australian left the grid following his exit from McLaren, where he completed his final race in Abu Dhabi last Sunday, and it was widely expected that he would be returnireng to Red Bull, who he left in 2018.

Ricciardo had a stint with Renault before moving to McLaren, with spells at both teams being disappointing ones, and it was announced earlier this year he would be leaving the latter – Oscar Piastri being his replacement on the grid.

The 33-year-old did not turn his back on Formula One, however, and could return to the grid with a full-time seat in the future, though previously stated he felt the best approach could be as a reserve driver.

That move has now come with Red Bull, where he will be an understudy to Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez in 2023 – filling in should either of the pair be unable to race, as well as competing in practice sessions.

“The smile says it all, I’m truly excited to be coming back home to Oracle Red Bull Racing as their Third Driver in 2023,” Ricciardo said.

“I already have so many fond memories of my time here, but the welcome from Christian [Horner], Dr [Helmut] Marko and the entire team is something I’m sincerely appreciative of.

“For me personally, the ability to contribute to and be surrounded by the best team in F1 is hugely appealing, whilst also giving me some time to recharge and refocus.

“I can’t wait to be with the team and support with simulator work, testing sessions and commercial activities. Let’s go!”

The 2023 Formula One season will begin on March 5 in Bahrain, the start of a record-breaking 24 races across the course of the campaign.

  • Pickford confirms Kane training with England after ankle scare

Harry Kane looks set to be available for England’s next World Cup encounter with the United States after Jordan Pickford confirmed the Three Lions captain had trained with the rest of the squad.

The Three Lions’ star striker was replaced by Callum Wilson during the 6-2 opening win against Iran on Monday and was subsequently sent for a scan on his ankle.

Kane’s importance to Gareth Southgate’s set-up has been illustrated over back-to-back tournaments, having won the Golden Boot at Russia 2018 and helped lead England to the Euro 2020 final last year.

Fears that he could miss Friday’s Group B encounter with the USA look to have been dispelled by Pickford, however, who confirmed the Tottenham forward had been going through drills with his team-mates.

“I think he’s good,” the goalkeeper stated. “[He’s] probably a bit sore, but he’s out on the grass with us today. That’s good, he’s our captain and he’s fine yeah.

“Everyone gave their all when he came off, Callum came on got the assist for Jack’s [Grealish] goal and played well. Everyone’s training well and working hard. Everyone’s here for a reason to play football.

“Harry is an unbelievable player. He’s a leader he’s the captain, and we all look up for him. But there’s also opportunities for other lads as well.

Kane failed to find the back of the net during his side’s rampant opening victory, but could yet exceed Wayne Rooney’s all-time England goalscorer record over the course of the tournament.

The Three Lions are top of Group B and will effectively qualify for the knockout rounds with a victory over the USA ahead of their final group stage game against Wales on November 29.

  • Dembele ready to impress after France get World Cup defence off to a flyer

Ousmane Dembele says he has “matured” as a person and a player since France last the World Cup in 2018, following a victorious start to their title defence against Australia.

The Barcelona winger started as Didier Deschamps’ side bounced back from an early Craig Goodwin finish to win 4-1 in Al Wakrah, thanks to an Olivier Giroud double and goals from Adrien Rabiot and Kylian Mbappe.

Having been an unused substitute four years ago as Les Bleus beat Croatia in  the final in Russia, Dembele is looking to play his part in what he hopes to be a successive World Cup triumph.

With his Blaugrana form having turned a corner after a prolonged saga over his future at the club, he feels he is in a stronger place to contribute now for the national team at Qatar 2022.

“There has been three difficult seasons with Barcelona,” he stated. “When you look at the first two games [I played in] 2018 and this year there is a lot of difference.

“I have matured. I didn’t have a healthy lifestyle as you can imagine, [though] it wasn’t a party! But I’m a little older now, [at] 25.”

France’s recovery ensured they dodged an upset against Australia, but other heavyweight favourites have been less fortunate so far at the World Cup.

Argentina were stunned by lowly Saudi Arabia, while Germany, looking to recover from a chastening campaign in Russia, failed to stop a comeback from Japan.

Dembele says it leaves a warning that no match is easy at Qatar 2022, and that bigger sides write off theoretical underdogs at their peril.

“There are no small teams,” he added. “Everyone knows how to play football, how to work on tactics. We saw that with Saudi Arabia.

“When you lower the intensity, you get trapped. But with our team, if we put all the ingredients together, we will not have to worry.”

France are next in action when they play Denmark in Group D on November 26, before their final group stage match against Tunisia four days later.

  • Rodrygo confident he can deliver for Brazil to end 20 years of ‘suffering’

Rodrygo is confident he can deliver for Brazil at the World Cup as he looks to bring an end to 20 years of “suffering”.

The South American giants open their campaign on Thursday against Serbia and are among the favourites in Qatar as they seek to end two decades of dominance from European nations.

Having triumphed in 2002, Brazil have since been knocked out at the quarter-finals in three of the last four tournaments, while being hammered 7-1 by Germany at the semi-final stage on home soil in 2014.

At 21, Rodrygo is too young to remember the last triumph by the five-time winners but has experienced his fair share of pain as a supporter and set his sights on involvement in Qatar following Brazil’s defeat to Belgium four years ago.

“Man, we’ve been suffering for 20 years. I was crying when we lost in 2006,” he wrote for the Player’s Tribune.

“In 2010, I was in Osasco seeing people paint the streets green and yellow. Nobody was working. School? Forget it. It’s not that I skipped school. There was no school. Even the teachers had fled.

“In 2014, I watched it with my dad in Minas Gerais. I prefer not to talk about it. I’m not even going to say the result.

“The loss to Belgium in 2018, I don’t ever want to have that feeling again. After the game I sent a message to my dad.  ‘Now we have to train, because in the next one I’ll be there.’

“I know in Brazil nobody is guaranteed a place in the squad, right? Nobody. I hadn’t even made my senior debut.  But could you blame me? I was the kid with a dream and a fake Selecao shirt.

“Words have power. Man, I’m living proof. This World Cup, I’m here and I see myself deciding games for Brazil.

“I just hope that this dream I’m living goes on forever. I don’t ever want to get used to it. I don’t ever want to wake up.”

After taking on Serbia, Brazil also face Switzerland and Cameroon in Group G.

  • Germany 1-2 Japan: Bundesliga duo stun Die Mannschaft with late show

Japan staged a sensational fightback to deal Germany a shock 2-1 defeat in their World Cup opener as Bundesliga players Ritsu Doan and Takuma Asano came off the bench to stun the four-time winners.

Germany made headlines by covering their mouths in a pre-match protest against FIFA’s decision to ban Manuel Neuer from wearing the OneLove armband, and they looked set to make a positive start in Group E when Ilkay Gundogan converted a first-half penalty.

Hansi Flick’s side then squandered several golden opportunities to put the game to bed before Freiburg forward Doan made them pay from a rebound 15 minutes from time.

With Germany chasing a winner, there was to be one final twist as Asano raced onto a long ball before firing beyond Neuer, leaving Die Mannschaft under huge pressure ahead of Sunday’s meeting with Spain.

Germany were saved by the offside flag when Daizen Maeda prodded Daichi Kamada’s early cross home, but Japan were masters of their own downfall when Flick’s team went ahead after 33 minutes.

Goalkeeper Shuichi Gonda committed a clumsy foul on David Raum to hand Germany a spot-kick, which Gundogan coolly converted.

A VAR review denied Germany a second as Kai Havertz tapped home from an offside position after Gonda saved from Joshua Kimmich, before Gundogan hit the base of the post after the restart.

Gonda denied Gnabry three times in quick succession as Germany continued to create chances, but Japan stunned them at the other end as Doan capitalised on a rebound to fire into the roof of the net.

Japan completed the turnaround with seven minutes left as Niklas Sule’s woeful positioning allowed Asano to stay onside from a long ball, and he hammered beyond Neuer to seal a famous win.

What does it mean? Germany under pressure after collapse

The identity of Germany’s second opponents in Group E – Luis Enrique’s Spain – made a positive result in Wednesday’s opener crucial, but a combination of dire defending and efficient attacking play from Japan cost them three points.

Germany’s loss was their first after building a half-time lead at the World Cup since 1978 (a 3-2 loss to Austria), snapping a run of 21 such games without defeat.

Flick’s team also became the first side since records began to lose a World Cup game when accumulating over three expected goals (xG).

Started from the Bochum now he’s here

Bochum winger Asano has failed to hit the net in six Bundesliga appearances this season, but the 28-year-old changed the game following his 57th-minute introduction at the Khalifa International Stadium.

Despite his limited time on the field, Asano led his team-mates for shots (five) and touches in the Germany area (five), and he showed no sign of nerves when one-on-one with Neuer as he fired Japan to victory.

Blue Samurai strike on the break

Germany were always expected to dictate the tempo in their first major tournament outing under former Bayern Munich coach Flick, and Japan were limited to just 26.2 per cent possession on Wednesday.

That figure is the second-lowest recorded by the winning team in a World Cup match, with South Korea having just 26 per cent when they recorded their own upset against Germany in 2018.

    Key Opta Facts:

    – Japan picked up their first victory against Germany (D1 L1), with nine of the 10 total goals in this fixture being scored in the second half.
    – Germany have lost a World Cup game in which they led at half time for the first time since 1978 (2-3 vs Austria), having gone unbeaten in their previous 21 such matches before today.
    – Japan came from behind to win a World Cup match for the very first time, having drawn two and lost 11 of their 13 matches when they had trailed before today.
    – Having lost their opening game at just one of their first 18 World Cup tournaments (W13 D4), Germany have lost their first game at each of the last two World Cups.

    What’s next?

Germany face Spain in a crucial Group E match on Sunday, while Japan take on Costa Rica on the same day.

  • Brazil need to capitalise on ‘best mode’ of in-form Neymar says captain Silva

Brazil must take advantage of having Neymar in his “best mode” at the World Cup, according to captain Thiago Silva.

Neymar heads to Qatar in supreme form. He has directly contributed to 26 goals for Paris Saint-Germain, scoring 15 and setting up a further 11 this season.

His tally of goal involvements is the joint-most in the top-five European leagues, along with Erling Haaland (23 goals, three assists) and club-mate Lionel Messi (12 goals, 14 assists).

With 75 international goals to his name, Neymar needs just three more to overtake Pele and become Brazil’s all-time leading scorer.

Neymar’s injury in the quarter-finals of Brazil’s home world cup in 2014 is often cited as a major factor in the 7-1 thrashing to Germany that followed in the last four, while he struggled to carry the team in Russia four years later, with the Selecao losing to Belgium in the quarter-finals.

But with Vinicius Junior, Richarlison, Gabriel Jesus, Rodrygo and Raphinha supporting Neymar in attack, Silva believes Brazil have to make their attacking quality count.

“Neymar has a good level for this competition,” Silva said in a press conference ahead of Brazil’s clash with Serbia on Thursday.

“Now, without injury or worry, we see a better Neymar. Best of all, he is humble.

“Our group has welcomed all of our colleagues and in my opinion they will make Neymar even more at ease.

“We will share our responsibilities as players and that will help us move forward. I think we need to take advantage of this best Neymar mode.”

It has been 20 years since Brazil won their fifth World Cup, and Silva – who was captain in 2014 but not in Russia – believes that only serves as extra inspiration.

“The 2002 win is a great inspiration for all of us,” he explained. “We have images of all the World Cups we have won and that’s a source of inspiration and motivation so we can continue making history.

“We know it’s up to us. I know those who could lift the World Cup in the past have had beautiful stories. It makes me even more motivated to honour our jersey.”

Silva believes the blend of youth and experience in Tite’s squad is ideal, as the 38-year-old claimed his experience of captaining Brazil in their disappointing campaign on home soil has only benefitted his own development.

He said: “Nowadays I am better prepared. Sometimes we need to learn the hard way.

“Our coaches can tell us but in the end we are the ones who need to learn from our experiences. I am calm, I am at ease, having the trust of all my colleagues.

“I’m now enjoying the best version of Thiago Silva. I think I’m living the best moments of my career.”

  • Germany protest FIFA’s OneLove ban at World Cup opener

Germany’s players protested FIFA’s decision to ban Manuel Neuer from wearing the OneLove armband by covering their mouths ahead of their World Cup opener, as the team declared: “Denying us the armband is the same as denying us a voice.”

Germany were among several European sides to commit to wearing the armband in order to promote an anti-discriminatory message in Qatar, where same-sex relationships are criminalised.

However, the teams backed down ahead of their opening World Cup fixtures after being threatened with sporting sanctions by FIFA, which German Football Association (DFB) president Bernd Neuendorf suggested were more significant than a yellow card for the affected captains.

After taking to the pitch for their Group E meeting with Japan at the Khalifa International Stadium, Germany’s players covered their mouths for the traditional pre-match photo to protest FIFA’s handling of the row.

The team subsequently released a statement via social media, which read: “We wanted to use our captain’s armband to take a stand for values that we hold in the Germany national team: diversity and mutual respect.

“Together with other nations, we wanted our voice to be heard.

“It wasn’t about making a political statement – human rights are non-negotiable. That should be taken for granted, but it still isn’t the case. That’s why this message is so important to us.

“Denying us the armband is the same as denying us a voice. We stand by our position.”

Germany captain Neuer was seen to have his armband checked by referee Ivan Barton Cisneros ahead of Wednesday’s game.

Die Mannschaft also warmed up for the match wearing training shirts featuring rainbow-coloured trim in another apparent show of support for LGBTQ+ rights.

  • Senyo Hosi lists potential replacement for Ken Ofori-Atta

Former Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Chamber of Bulk Oil Distributors, Senyo Hosi, has suggested to President Akufo-Addo five financial experts who should head the Finance Ministry instead of Ken Ofori-Atta.

The personalities suggested include; First Deputy Governor, Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr. Maxwell Opoku Afari, Former Ecobank Group CEO, Mr. Albert Essien, Former President of GAB and current Chairman, ESLA PLC, Mr. Simon Dornoo, Former Governor, BoG, Dr. Paul Acquah and Tax Policy Expert, Lawyer, Economist & Lecturer, Dr. Abdallah Ali-Nakyea.

In an open letter to the president, Mr Hosi, stated categorically a replacement has become inevitable since “none of your current MPs and Ministers can offer what this market needs.”

According to him, the country requires appointees who will uphold fiscal discipline against party political considerations, a situation that is currently not the case.

“It is time for a technocratic and meritocratic appointment of one truly respected and accepted by the financial markets and across the political divide,” he added.

Mr Hosi noted that there are other equally competent candidates the President can choose from, nonetheless, “I urge you to consider the guiding principle expatiated above – put the national interest above all else. Uneasy lies the head that wears the crown.”

Following his submission, he told the President “the power is yours,” a catchphrase by Captain Planet, his favourite cartoon character.

His request comes at a time when several Ghanaians including the Minority in Parliament have voted a no confidence in Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, who is supposed to ensure the smooth running of the economy.

Mr Ofori-Atta risks losing his job as he is currently facing a censure motion filed by the Minority in Parliament.

Meanwhile, Mr Hosi wants the President to consider some five personalities for the role of Minister of State at the Finance Ministry, a position formerly held by Charles Adu Boahen.

The five are Mr. Kwamena Asomaning – CEO, Stanbic Bank Ghana Limited, Mansa Nettey – CEO, Standard Chartered Bank Ghana, Alex Emmanuel Asiedu – Head of Investments, Africa Region, Standard Bank, Prof. Festus Ebo Turkson – Economist & Lecturer, University of Ghana and Josephine Anan-Ankomah – Group Executive- Commercial, Ecobank Group.

Mr Adu Boahen was dismissed by the President after he was accused by investigative journalist, Anas Aremeyaw Anas, of corruption-related activities.

  • Senyo Hosi’s open letter to Akufo-Addo: The one big decision – Replacing Ken, if at all

The past few weeks must have been among the most difficult for you. You have not only contended with your political opposition but, ironically, with members of your party over none other than, undoubtedly, one of your foremost confidants and trusted lieutenants.

The ask for the head of Ken Ofori-Atta, in your case, may be akin to the ask for a part of your soul. We may love or hate you, but for sure, we can’t take this from you: You don’t take loyalty to your team lightly. The demand of the 98 or so NPP MPs for the Finance Minister to go, despite the many overtures you have made to appease them, seems to suggest that the exit of Ken Ofori Atta (KOA) has become almost inevitable.

Maintaining and superintending this deadlock will make the country ungovernable. History will not be kind to us if we have no lessons to learn from the executive-parliament impasse of the 3rd Republic. I hold nothing against KOA. I believe he has done his bit and run his race, but Ghana is bigger than us all. We must be humble about our reality if we can’t change its tide.

Unsurprisingly, the political hawks in your party have lined up in pursuit of his position or to influence his replacement. I can understand the politics. Unfortunately, the dire situation we find ourselves in as an economy and to a material extent, as a country, transcends the party politicking characteristic of our
    time.

Mr. President, the value of our Euro bonds, for example, has fallen by over 60% in barely a year and same can be said of the value of our Cedi. Respectfully, this sudden drop for any financial market is catastrophic. It is inspired by a loss of confidence in government policy and information credibility on the local and
    international financial markets.

In simple terms, the market does not trust what government says it has done or intends to do. We have simply lost fiscal credibility and it is tied to the political frame of the leadership of the financial sector. Any competent analyst will tell you that the market wants the head of KOA more than the politicians. The market holds him responsible (whether fairly or unfairly) for failing to hold the fiscal line and marshal the discipline required for our debt sustainability. Making E-levy so central to fiscal policy only for its forecasting to woefully fail as well as the debt ratios and his anti-IMF stubbornness did him and us no good.

To make matters worse, inflation and the depreciation of the currency have migrated macro-economic jargons from their obscure place of academic speak to the very present reality of the average Ghanaian. In other words, we can feel it in our pockets. Ghanaians describe this in three Akan words: “Kurom Ay3 Hye”.

Unfortunately, in such times, it is the Finance Minister the people see and think of. Mr. President, your appointment (if you will have to make one) of the next Finance Minister will easily be the most important decision you will be making on the economy as you wrap up your tenure in office.

Your decision must be inspired by Ghana’s economic recovery and not your party’s electoral viability in 2024. Mr. President, it is time to think about the next generation and not the next election. It is time for patriotic leadership.

With fiscal credibility lost, the market does not just need an IMF. It needs credible fiscal leadership even more. Your appointment of the next Finance Minister must be purely hinged on competence and financial market credibility. Having said this, the out-and-out politician in your party and overt party sympathizer will not inspire the credibility the market seeks.

To be blunt, none of your current MPs and Ministers can offer what this market needs. The market will not have tolerance for an appointee who is likely
to sacrifice fiscal discipline for party political considerations in an election year when fiscal recklessness is often the name of the game.

It is time for a technocratic and meritocratic appointment of one truly respected and accepted by the financial markets and across the political divide. I highly recommend you consult key stakeholders in the local and international markets (Banks, fund managers, Multilateral agencies, etc.) in your shortlisting
and considerations. The following names I find worth considering:

    1. Dr. Maxwell Opoku Afari – First Deputy Governor, BoG
    2. Mr. Albert Essien – Former Ecobank Group CEO
    3. Mr. Simon Dornoo – Former President of GAB and current Chairman, ESLA PLC
    4. Dr. Paul Acquah – Former Governor, BoG
    5. Dr. Abdallah Ali-Nakyea – Tax Policy Expert, Lawyer, Economist & Lecturer

As the size of government remains one of concern, there is no doubt that the Ministry of Finance should lead the way in its resizing. I recommend the following for consideration as the replacement for the Minister of State for Finance:

    1. Mr. Kwamena Asomaning – CEO, Stanbic Bank Ghana Limited
    2. Mansa Nettey – CEO, Standard Chartered Bank Ghana
    3. Alex Emmanuel Asiedu – Head of Investments, Africa Region, Standard Bank
    4. Prof. Festus Ebo Turkson – Economist & Lecturer, University of Ghana
    5. Josephine Anan-Ankomah – Group Executive- Commercial, Ecobank Group

Your Excellency, the above names are just to give tangibility to the concept advised. I believe there are other equally competent candidates you may consider, but I, nonetheless, urge you to consider the guiding principle expatiated above – put the national interest above all else. Uneasy lies the head that wears the crown.

Your current position is truly not envied. I have often said the presidency is easily the loneliest job in the world. Almost everyone, including your conjugants, is in pursuit of your influence for their private gain. You still will have to make a call!

A call for legacy, or a call for politicking? As Captain Planet, my favourite cartoon character, would say: “The power is yours!”

  • Best Manchester City XI of the Guardiola era

Pep Guardiola’s new contract with Manchester City will see him remain at the Etihad Stadium until 2025, when he will mark nine years at the club.

The Catalan coach has already remained in the Premier League for longer than he has at his previous roles with Barcelona and Bayern Munich, finding a home within English football and establishing a dominant force with his City side.

Throughout his six and a half years in charge so far, Guardiola has been in charge of numerous superstars and club legends, with an all-time squad that would be of envy for any manager in world football.

But how exactly do you break that down into a full XI? We have taken on the task and done exactly that.

    Ederson

Guardiola made a bold choice upon his arrival in Manchester, swiftly making it clear England international Joe Hart, a two-time Premier League winner, would not fit into his plans moving forward. After a disappointing season with Claudio Bravo, Ederson arrived in 2017 and has been number one ever since.

All of Ederson’s 260 appearances across all competitions have come as a starter, higher than any other player under Guardiola, while he sits fifth in the list for total appearances under the Catalan boss.

    Kyle Walker

Signed from Tottenham Hotspur in 2017, Kyle Walker has been a mainstay in the City side that has dominated domestic football over the course of the past five years, ranking fifth for the most starts under Guardiola in all competitions (207).

Walker’s versatility has been a key benefit for Guardiola and England, with his attacking play also fitting into City’s style of play well. Since arriving at City, Walker has contributed 17 assists across all competitions, behind only Joao Cancelo (20) among defenders.

    Aymeric Laporte

Among defenders during Guardiola’s spell in charge, only John Stones and Walker have started more games than Laporte (155), with both players having joined the club in the seasons before Laporte’s arrival from Athletic Bilbao in January 2018.

A total of 163 appearances across all competitions puts him narrowly ahead of Nicolas Otamendi (161) for most games under Guardiola.

    John Stones

Snapped up in 2016 as one of Guardiola’s first signings, Stones has had to contend with incredible competition for his spot at the heart of the defence, with the likes of Laporte, Ruben Dias and Nathan Ake all drafted in.

Despite that, Stones continues to be an important player for City and has made 175 starts under Guardiola and 206 appearances overall, ranking second in both among defenders behind only Walker.

    Joao Cancelo

The versatile Portuguese full-back moved to City in 2019 from Juventus and has excelled for City, tallying 149 total appearances and 135 starts in all competitions since joining the club, and provides a huge boost in the attacking third.

A total of 20 assists puts him above any defender during Guardiola’s spell in charge, even those who have been at the club far longer.

    Kevin de Bruyne

Few players fit the Guardiola philosophy more than De Bruyne, who has hit new heights under the former Barcelona boss to stand among the finest players in world football – with a record in front of goal that many would envy.

De Bruyne has registered 117 assists under Guardiola, way ahead of second-place Raheem Sterling (66), while he has scored 73 goals – only behind Gabriel Jesus, Sterling and Sergio Aguero.

    Ilkay Gundogan

With 205 starts under Guardiola, the midfielder has been an integral part of the City side since following the Catalan from Germany to Manchester, ranking only behind Walker, David Silva, Sterling, De Bruyne and Ederson in that regard.

Only six players have scored more goals under Guardiola than Gundogan (51), who ranks ninth for the most assists (33).

    Fernandinho

The rock of City’s midfield for years, Fernandinho started 200 games under Guardiola and made a total of 244 appearances, the latter seeing him rank behind only Ederson, Bernardo Silva, Gundogan, De Bruyne and Sterling.

A total of 12 goals and 16 assists in those matches represents a decent return for a player renowned more for his defensive strength.

    Bernardo Silva

Slotting into the attack ahead of Phil Foden and David Silva, both of whom have a stellar record under Guardiola, Bernardo Silva narrowly gets the nod due to his own impressive numbers in the final third.

Silva has 104 direct goal contributions (50 goals, 54 assists) in 273 appearances, starting in 208 of those matches. Only Sterling and De Bruyne have more assists under Guardiola, while Silva is one of eight players to hit the half-century mark for goals.

    Sergio Aguero

In the future, Aguero’s spot in the team is likely to be under significant threat from Erling Haaland following his blistering start to life at City, but the Argentine superstar retains the edge for the time being.

Aguero scored 124 goals under Guardiola, more than any other player, with Sterling the only other to have broken the century mark. Those goals came in just 183 appearances with Guardiola in charge, displaying his deadly ability in front of the net.

    Raheem Sterling

An unsung hero of the Guardiola era, Sterling played 292 times under the Catalan boss, more than anyone else, while only Aguero scored more goals than Sterling (120).

Sterling also contributed 66 assists under Guardiola, sitting behind only De Bruyne, and is the only player to have scored over 100 goals and added over 50 assists under the Catalan boss.

  • Southgate worried by England refereeing precedent

Gareth Southgate is worried and demanded “clarity” after expressing concerns England could fall foul to refereeing decisions after a pre-World Cup briefing.

FIFA referees committee chairman Pierluigi Collina used an example clip of Kalvin Phillips blocking an opponent at a free-kick to help create space for Harry Maguire to score in last year’s 5-0 win over Albania.

The video was used to brief referees, competing nations and the media, on how to spot foul play from set-piece situations and seemingly worked against England in Monday’s 6-2 thrashing of Iran.

Maguire appeared to be dragged down by Iran’s Rouzbeh Cheshmi in the opening stages, with the referee nor the VAR intervening, before John Stones conceded a late penalty for similar on Mehdi Taremi.

Southgate admitted he fears England may fall on the wrong side of decisions after Collina’s briefing, citing concerns after a “definite penalty” on Maguire.

“What worries me is we were used in an example in the referees’ video,” the England manager said.

“What we were shown, the incident in the first half [with Maguire] would be a definite penalty.

“Maybe there’s a shirt pull [for the Iran penalty] – we’ve got to be better on that – but I’m a bit worried we were the example shown.

“Then to get a decision as happened in the first half, we need some clarification really as to how it’s going to be.”

Southgate recalled the Football Association being able to discuss penalty decisions with match officials after England’s 2-1 win over Tunisia at Russia 2018.

“It happened in Russia and we’ve got to have that dialogue with FIFA [again],” he added.

“We want clarity. Otherwise, we don’t know where we stand. Goals are going in and we don’t know whether they stand or not. The bit that worries me is we were the example shown.”

England face the United States in their next Group B game on Friday before a clash with Wales four days later.

  • Modric urges Croatia focus on Qatar despite ‘unforgettable’ 2018 World Cup

Croatia’s World Cup exploits at Russia 2018 remain “unforgettable” for Luka Modric but the veteran midfielder wants to put those memories aside in Qatar.

Modric claimed the Ballon d’Or in 2018 after guiding Croatia to the final of FIFA’s top tournament, which ended in defeat to France, while winning a third consecutive Champions League with Real Madrid.

The 37-year-old and coach Zlatko Dalic are two familiar faces from the Russian run in an otherwise much-changed squad.

Modric was named Golden Ball winner at the last World Cup, given to the tournament’s best player, but wants to put previous success behind him ahead of Wednesday’s Group F opener against Morocco.

“Definitely, what we’ve been through in 2018 in Russia is unforgettable and indelible in my mind,” the Madrid legend said on Tuesday.

“Others can continue speaking about it but we need to put it aside and focus on what’s ahead.

“Many players at the 2018 World Cup in Russia are not here, we have new players, new quality young players with fresh blood and energy. This is a new tournament and we have to look at it that way.”

Croatia have lost their opening game in three of their five World Cup appearances, with the exceptions being 1998 when they reached the semi-final and 20 years later where they made the showpiece game.

Dalic’s side appear in good form after coming through qualifying without any real scares and topping a Nations League group that included France and Denmark.

While Croatia have won each of their last five games, Modric insisted Dalic’s men will show respect to Morocco, who are ranked 22nd in the world by FIFA.

“We have to maintain a modest attitude and not make big promises or make great claims that we’ll achieve something,” he added.

“I’m prepared physically and I’m in great shape. I’m healthy but drawing comparisons with other World Cups makes no sense. It’s important to feel prepared and ready to win.”

If Croatia can go one better than 2018, Modric vowed to call an end to his illustrious international career.

“If this happens it would be great. I’ll retire if we win,” he concluded.

  • Luka Modric’s Croatia frustrated by stubborn Morocco

Croatia’s bid to emulate their World Cup exploits of four years ago began in stuttering fashion with a frustrating Group F stalemate against Morocco.

The 2018 runners-up controlled possession at Al Bayt Stadium but lacked a cutting edge in a forgettable 0-0 draw against opposition with just two World Cup victories in their history.

Nikola Vlasic went close to an opener in first-half added time, while Noussair Mazraoui and Achraf Hakimi threatened winners for Morocco in the second period.

The result leaves both sides with hope of reaching the knockout stages – albeit with plenty to do – in a group also containing Belgium and Canada.

Croatia’s starting XI contained five players who were involved in their 4-2 World Cup final defeat to France in Russia, including influential captain Luka Modric.

Manager Zlatko Dalic also remained from that match in Moscow and saw his side struggle to create in a tight, uninspiring opening period largely devoid of clear openings.

Tottenham’s Ivan Perisic lashed narrowly over from distance, while Chelsea forward Hakim Ziyech wastefully fired a well-positioned free-kick straight into the wall at the other end.

Croatia saved their best first-half attempts for added time.

Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou was finally tested when he repelled a close-range poke from Vlasic with a thigh, before Modric smashed over just before the whistle.

Walid Regragui only took charge of the Atlas Lions three months before the tournament and was yet to see his new side concede a goal.

They remained resilient at the back after the restart and also improved from an attacking perspective, with Bayern Munich full-back Mazraoui, who was later stretchered off injured, seeing a header pushed away by Dominik Livakovic.

Paris St Germain defender Hakimi then had a superb long-range effort denied by Croatia keeper Livakovic after being teed up by Ziyech at a free-kick before the contest faded away into the third goalless draw in the competition’s last four games.

Croatia continue their campaign against Canada on Sunday afternoon, with Morocco facing Belgium earlier that day.

  • Organised labour rejects 12 percent salary increment after meeting govt

Organised Labour has rejected a 12 per cent salary increment offered by the government following days of negotiations.

Tuesday’s meeting which ended in a stalemate will reconvene later today, where workers say they will push for more.

Representatives of the Unions indicated that the 12 percent is not adequate to take care of their needs following a spike in inflation.

President of TEWU, Ambrose Yaw Kwadwodzah says they insist on a 60 per cent increase before the budget is read.

“This year’s conditions are far worse than last year’s when we negotiated for salary increment. We believe that what is left in the coffers is not being shared equitably amongst us.

“The so-called Article 71 office holders, one of their allowance is more than someone’s basic salary and that is not fair at all,” he noted.

His position is backed by his colleagues at the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT).

Speaking to JoyNews, the Association’s President, Dr Isaac Owusu said, “This is not something too much for the government to do for public sector workers who are rendering service in the interest of the nation.”

“When we were negotiating for 2021/2022 raise, it was 4 and 7 per cent respectively and you saw the pressure that came on the leadership of the organised labour. Aside from that, look at the current economic situation that the workers find themselves in, left with the members alone, they would ask for more than the 60%”

Meanwhile, ISSER Director, Prof Peter Quartey says government can only afford a 15 to 20 per cent increase should the labour unions push for more.

  • Rejecting 2023 budget could derail IMF negotiations – Gabby Otchere-Darko

Founder of the Danquah Institute think tank, Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, says Ghana’s economic crisis could worsen should the 2023 Budget not be passed on time.

According to Mr Otchere-Darko, the budget to be presented on Thursday, November 24, cannot suffer the fate of the previous one, referring to the 2022 Budget that saw a long debate and a protracted procedure.

He argued that failure to pass the budget could derail the progress made with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for a bailout.

Private legal practitioner and a member of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has called on the Minority to support Mr Ofori-Atta.

Meanwhile, the Majority in Parliament has rescinded its decision to be absent from the Chamber when Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, presents the 2023 budget and economic statement.

The Majority’s earlier position was that Mr Ofori-Atta could no longer be the face that represents the economy, thus should be replaced.

As part of measures to ensure the president accepts their request, some 98 NPP MPs threatened to boycott the budget reading.

Their actions prompted an intervention by the leadership of the ruling New Patriotic Party.

On November 22, 2022, the leadership of the NPP engaged the Caucus to find an amicable resolution to the impasse.

After deliberation, the party’s leadership resolved that the President will act on the earlier demands of the MPs after the 2023 budget has been read and appropriated.

In view of this, the Majority Caucus has decided that its members will attend to all government business in the house, particularly, the 2023 Budget Statement and Economic Policy and all related matters.

  • 2023 Budget: Revive and transform tourism sector – Tourism Federation to govt

The Ghana Tourism Federation says government has lip services with regards to the growth of the tourism, sector despite its enormous potential.

The Federation, therefore, wants to see an ambitious policy in the 2023 Budget to revive and transform the sector as one of the significant contributors to the economy.

Speaking to Joy Business, Executive Secretary of the Federation, Emmanuel Frimpong said the government must begin implement promises made to stakeholders in the tourism sector.

“I’m saying that government over the years has just given too many lip services to the sector. If you look at the potential of tourism in this country, and we’ve seen countries that are using tourism to contribute so much to their economy. But we hear too many talks, little efforts to actually position the tourism sector to contribute much to the economy”.

“I think government has to prioritise whatever they are doing and I hope that this budget [2023] will seek to do that because if you look at tourism, it is one of the sectors that has the potential to impact on every aspect of the economy where everybody benefits, especially women”, he explained.

He further added that tourism has the potential to bring in significant foreign exchange earnings.

“I believe tourism has the potential to change some of the things we are seeing. I mean come to think of it, anybody that comes to the country as a tourist, comes here with foreign money. So, if we are talking about dollars that we don’t have, what is our problem”, he mentioned.

“We have an airport that when people are coming here, it is difficult to get visa. Visa on arrival is a challenge…electronic visa is a challenge. Why should I be here chilling, I don’t know.  So these are the hanging proves that we should be looking at but government is doing nothing.

  • CHRAJ begins probe into Anas’ petition against Ofori-Atta

The Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) has begun investigating a conflict of interest petition brought before it by Anas Aremeyaw Anas.

The investigative journalist who is the founder of Tiger Eye P.I is urging CHRAJ to look into allegations that the private companies of Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta and former Minister of State at the Finance Ministry, Charles Adu Boahen, benefitted from loans and bonds entered into by Ghana.

Earlier, Mr. Ken Ofori-Atta had been accused of employing the services of a company he co-founded, Data Bank Financial Services – as advisors for some of Ghana’s international loan transactions.

While Black Star Brokerage, a company belonging to Charles Adu Boahen has also been accused of benefitting from transactions on government bond issuance.

Both companies have allegedly been acting as financial advisors and Bond Market Specialists to the Ministry of Finance.

Confirming the development to JoyNews, CHRAJ Commissioner, Joseph Whittal said the Commission has received an official complaint from the Tiger Eye PI team and is assessing the materials presented to it.

“The allegations are that there is conflict of interest in terms of their official duties as public officers and the companies in which they have interest in terms of government bonds and so the case is going through the standard process of assessment in order to make sure that it meets procedural requirement under the Commission’s regulation as well as whether it is really within the mandate of the Commission. Based on that, we will then decide what next steps to take,” Mr. Whittal said.

Meanwhile, the Office of the Special Prosecutor has also commenced investigations into the same corruption allegations levelled against Charles Adu Boahen in an exposé after President Akufo-Addo’s referral of the matter to the Office.

    Background

The Member of Parliament for Bolgatanga Central, Isaac Adongo in 2018 accused Ken Ofori-Atta of conflict of interest following the appointment of Databank Financial Services as transaction advisors to the Ministry and the Bank of Ghana (BoG) in the issuance of government bonds.

The MP in a letter titled: ‘Databank must be withdrawn as TA to Ministry of Finance,’ said industry watchers and well-meaning Ghanaians needed to be “concerned” about the development, “especially given the things that unfolded at the Ministry of Finance with regard to public bond issuance since the assumption into office of Mr Ofori-Atta.

“It lends credence to growing disquiet in the financial sector that family and friends are having a better part of government-related businesses, not track record, competence and clout,” he stated.

According to him, Barclays Bank, Ghana, Standard Chartered Bank, Ghana and Strategic African Securities (SAS) used to be the book runners for the BoG. However, he said Databank was replaced with SAS given the relationship between the Finance Minister and Databank.

“It is disgusting to note that Databank, which is the baby of the current Finance Minister, is now a book runner at the Bank of Ghana (BoG). It is instructive to note that the presence of Databank in the Transactions Advisor team puts the Minister of Finance in a potential conflict of interest situation,” he mentioned.

Mr. Charles Adu Boahen while appearing before the Parliament’s Appointment Committee in 2021, said he was no longer involved in the running of Black Star Brokerage, which he owns. Mr Adu-Boahen said he had resigned from the company in 2017 and had since not engaged in any of its activities.

“As I mentioned earlier, I resigned from the board and the management of Black Star Brokerage in 2017. I have no role and do not participate in its business dealings,” he stated.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Finance dismissed such claims that Databank and Black Star Brokerage were handpicked by the Finance Ministry and the Bank of Ghana to act as Bond Market Specialists for government bond issuance, hence benefiting from those transactions.

In a statement, the Ministry said, it is incorrect the claim that these two firms have been appointed as advisors to the Ministry of Finance (MoF).

“The selection of the Primary Dealers [PDs] and Bond Market Specialists [BMSs] is an automatic process based on market performance and historical secondary market trading activity which is publicly available and cannot be manipulated by the Ministry of Finance [MoF] or the Bank of Ghana [BoG]”.

“Since 1996, the Ministry of Finance with the Bank of Ghana has developed and implemented various policies which affect the issuance and trading of Government of Ghana debt securities (Treasuries and Bonds). The ultimate objectives of these policies are to develop an efficient fixed income market, strengthen the capacity of local institutions and deepen financial intermediation”, it added.

Furthermore, it pointed out that Databank and Black Star Brokerage are two out of nine firms that have been selected by BoG/MoF as Bond Market Specialists and not Advisors to MoF.

  • Garnacho grateful to attentive Ten Hag after Man Utd breakthrough

Manchester United winger Alejandro Garnacho is grateful to manager Erik ten Hag after being given the opportunity to make his senior breakthrough.

The 18-year-old made a couple of first-team cameos under Ralf Rangnick last season but only really cemented his place as a genuine option for the senior side in the past few weeks.

Garnacho looked lively in pre-season and appeared set for a prominent role in the squad, but Ten Hag revealed after his full debut against Sheriff in October that he had held him back because he was “not happy with him” at the start of the season.

Ten Hag was relatively vague when explaining why Garnacho had been left out for so long, saying “[young players] have to know the demands in top football, it’s not only about a trick or scoring one goal”.

Nevertheless, Garnacho quickly built on his impressive performance against Sheriff, going on to score winning goals against Real Sociedad and Fulham, the latter a fine finish after an explosive run and clever link-up with Christian Eriksen.

He went into the World Cup break with eight first-team appearances under his belt for this season, and despite Ten Hag’s restrictive use of him earlier in the campaign, he was appreciative of the Dutchman’s man-management.

“Erik Ten Hag is a very good manager and, above all, he’s a great person,” Garnacho, who was named United’s Player of the Month for last week, told the club’s website.

“He always pays very close attention to us all, and helps us a great deal, especially the young players.

“I’ve had to keep working hard until that moment came where I was given my opportunity. For the moment, I’m making the most of the opportunities he’s giving me.

“I don’t want to take a backward step from here, I’d like to appear regularly in the team and keep going in the same way.”

That goal against Fulham made Garnacho, aged 18 years and 135 days at the time, the youngest player to net a 90th-minute Premier League winner since Federico Macheda for United against Aston Villa in April 2009.

United are next in action against Burnley in the EFL Cup fourth round on December 19, before hosting Nottingham Forest in the league eight days later.

  • South Korea coach Bento confident Son is fully fit to face Uruguay

Son Heung-min is comfortable having to wear a protective mask in order to play against Uruguay, with South Korea coach Paulo Bento confident his star player is fit.

Tottenham forward Son sustained a fractured eye socket in Spurs’ clash with Marseille at the start of November, casting doubt over his participation in Qatar.

However, he was named in Bento’s squad and has returned to training wearing a mask in order to shield the injury from further damage.

Korea open their Group H campaign against Uruguay on Thursday, and Bento has confidence that Son has fully recovered, though conceded there is an element of risk.

“Sonny can play, yes. He will be able to play,” Bento said.

“I think the fact that he would be wearing a mask is not an inconvenience for him, it’s rather natural.

“We have stuck to the plan since we arrived here, also the way we integrated him into our group shows that it has been natural, except in the final training stages.

“We will see how it will be. Our hope is that he will feel comfortable to the greatest extent possible, and we will use the best strategy so he can feel at ease during the game.

“He knows and we know that we cannot rule out any risks.”

Son is Korea’s joint-leading World Cup goalscorer, having scored three times in the competition, and he is aiming to become only the second player from the nation to score in three separate editions of the tournament after Park Ji-sung.

While Korea are heavily reliant on Son to lead their attack, Uruguay are blessed with three exceptional forwards in the form of veteran campaigners Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani, along with Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez.

“With our strikers, our plan is to put a good performance in the first game, that’s for sure. We are very much excited with what we can produce,” said Uruguay coach Diego Alonso.

“We have peace of mind because we have goalscoring opportunities, flexibility not only with our strikers, we are good defensively and this will make us a very competitive team.”

While Alonso would not apply extra pressure on his team, captain Diego Godin says Uruguayan players always have “big shoes to fill”.

“The qualification round had ups and downs but we achieved our goal,” he said.

“The World Cup is an objective but it is still far away, but this history and this shirt requires us to win. We have very big shoes to fill when we are representing our country.”

Korea boss Bento, meanwhile, also stressed that Suarez, Cavani and Nunez are not the only players his team have to worry about at Education City Stadium.

“I would say Federico Valverde is a fantastic player,” he replied when asked about the Real Madrid midfielder.

“Together with [Kevin] De Bruyne he’s one of the best midfielders in the world, a player who can actually win the game.

“Collectively they are very strong, and we have to cope with the power they have as well as the individual skill sets.”

  • FIFA investigating Ecuador for alleged homophobic chants at World Cup

FIFA’s disciplinary committee has opened an investigation over alleged homophobic chanting from Ecuador fans during their opening World Cup match against Qatar.

The South Americans were 2-0 victors against the hosts on Sunday, where it has been reported homophobic chants were directed towards rivals Chile.

Chile had accused Ecuador of fielding an ineligible player, Byron Castillo, during qualification for the tournament, with the 27-year-old left out of Ecuador’s squad to prevent any further controversy.

Ecuador retained their spot at the World Cup but were issued a fine and handed a points deduction for their qualifying campaign for the 2026 tournament.

The are now also facing a FIFA investigation.

“The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has opened proceedings against the Ecuadorian Football Association due to chants by Ecuadorian supporters during the Qatar v Ecuador FIFA World Cup match played on 20 November,” a statement read.

“The proceedings were opened on the basis of article 13 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code.”

LGBTQ+ rights have been at the forefront of the World Cup as homosexuality is illegal in Qatar.

Seven nations, including England and Germany, had planned for their captains to wear the OneLove armband during the tournament.

However, the decision from each of the countries was taken not to do so after FIFA threatened to book captains if they broke regulations and made their own statements on social issues, rather than following guidelines from the game’s governing body.

  • Guardiola extends contract with Man City

Pep Guardiola has promised to bring more success to Manchester City after signing a two-year extension at the Etihad.

The Catalan tactician, 51, has been in charge at City since 2016 and has won nine major trophies during his reign so far, including four Premier League titles.

Guardiola’s deal was due to expire at the end of the current campaign but talks over fresh terms had been ongoing for some time.

Though his new contract will only run until 2025, the Spaniard is confident silverware will be the norm at City for a long time yet.

Guardiola said: “I am so pleased to be staying at Manchester City for another two years.

“I can’t say thank you enough to everyone at the club for trusting me. I am happy and comfortable here. I have everything I need to do my job as best as possible.

“I know the next chapter of this club will be amazing for the next decade. It happened over the last 10 years and it will happen in the next 10 years because this club is so stable.

“From day one I felt something special being here. I cannot be in a better place.

“I still have the feeling there is more we can achieve together and that is why I want to stay and continue fighting for trophies.”

City sit second in the Premier League table, five points behind leaders Arsenal, and will resume their title defence after the World Cup at Leeds on December 28.

Guardiola will also be eyeing success in the Champions League — the only major trophy he has failed to lift as City boss.

Already the club’s second longest-serving manager since the Second World War, the ex-Barcelona head coach has a 72.4% winning percentage and chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak was thrilled to tie him down.

Al Mubarak said: “I am delighted that Pep’s journey will continue.

Pep Guardiola will want to win the Champions League for the first time as Manchester City boss before he leaves
Pep Guardiola will want to win the Champions League for the first time as Manchester City boss before he leaves

“He has already contributed so much to the success and fabric of this organisation and it’s exciting to think what might be possible given the energy, hunger and ambition he clearly still has.

“Under his very special leadership our first team has accomplished so much, whilst continuously playing, and constantly evolving, a City style of football that is admired the world over.

  • Deschamps defends choice to sub history-chasing Giroud

Didier Deschamps has defended his decision to substitute Olivier Giroud in France’s World Cup win over Australia, delaying his bid to become France’s all-time leading goalscorer outright.

Giroud equalled Thierry Henry’s record of 51 goals for France with a brace on Tuesday, helping Les Bleus fight back to post a 4-1 win in their Group D contest.

However, the striker was replaced by Marcus Thuram in the closing stages, meaning he will have to wait until Saturday’s meeting with Denmark for another chance to seize the record for himself.

Deschamps was defensive when asked why he withdrew Giroud in his post-match press conference, responding: “Would you like to take my place and be the coach?

“Olivier Giroud did what he does best, he scored goals. You have to manage a lot of things as a coach.

“We have another match in four days and we’d already scored four goals, so sometimes it’s good to give someone else a chance and give him a rest.

“You tend to talk about records a lot, he tends to focus on what he does on the pitch.

“He was very effective tonight, which is great for him, he’s useful with the way he links up with the other attackers in our team.”

As well as claiming a slice of France history, Giroud – aged 36 years and 53 days – became the second-oldest player to score a World Cup brace, after Roger Milla did so twice at the 1990 tournament when 38 years old.

France initially looked unlikely to make a positive start to their World Cup defence, with Adrien Rabiot having to cancel out Craig Goodwin’s opener before Giroud took centre stage.

Deschamps was pleased with Les Bleus’ response to going behind after witnessing other sides fail to fight back in the tournament’s opening round of fixtures.

“I think we began the match well, we linked up well in the first few minutes but we let in a goal which we should have avoided,” Deschamps said.

“It was tough, but in the second half we showed a lot more confidence, we created a lot more chances and scored four goals, so of course that is good. We could have scored more, but it’s a very good beginning.

“The first match is always vital, so I have to congratulate the team. We saw some earlier games where teams were unable to respond, but we did. We showed strength of character.”

Tuesday began with one of the greatest upsets in World Cup history as Saudi Arabia beat Argentina 2-1, but Deschamps said that surprise result had no bearing on France’s approach.

“The players saw that match, but you have to focus on the opponent that’s in front of you,” he added.

  • NPP MPs make U-turn on boycotting Ofori-Atta’s 2023 budget reading

The Majority in Parliament has rescinded its decision to be absent from the Chamber when Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, presents the 2023 budget and economic statement.

Mr Ofori-Atta is scheduled to present the 2023 budget tomorrow, November 24.

The Majority’s earlier position was that Mr Ofori-Atta could no longer be the face that represents the economy, thus should be replaced.

As part of measures to ensure the president accepts their request, some 98 NPP MPs threatened to boycott the budget reading.

Their actions prompted an intervention by the ruling New Patriotic Party. The leadership of the NPP on November 22 engaged the Caucus to find an amicable resolution to the impasse.

NPP MPs reverse threats to boycott doing business with Ofori-Atta

The statement also stated that the Party has resolved that the President will act on the earlier demands of the MPs after the 2023 budget has been read and appropriated.

The leadership of the Caucus has therefore entreated its members to attend to all government business in the house, particularly, the 2023 Budget Statement and Economic Policy and all related matters.

  • World Cup 2022: Ghana are physically a strong team and technically as well – Ruben Dias

Portugal defender Ruben Dias has heaped praise on Ghana ahead of their 2022 World Cup opener on Thursday, claiming they are physically a strong team.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s falling out with Manchester United has dominated the build-up to the game which will be played at Doha’s Stadium 974 on Thursday.

Fernando Santos’ side will also face Uruguay and South Korea in the other Group H games as they look to qualify for the round of 16.

“Ghana are physically a strong team, technically as well. They have footballers who are playing at the top level in Europe,” Dias said in a press conference on Tuesday.

Ghana are making a record 4th World Cup appearance in Qatar having previously played in the 2006, 2010 and 2014 in Germany, South Africa and Brazil respectively.

Black Stars will be hoping to progress from the group stage at this year’s tournament.

The West African country exited the group stage at the 2014 edition in Brazil after a slow start to the tournament.

Black Stars have been drawn in Group H alongside Portugal, South Korea and Uruguay.

After playing Portugal in their first game at Stadium 974 (Rass Abou Aboud) on Thursday, they will take on South Korea and Uruguay on November 28 and December 2 respectively.

  • Ghanaians react to Bawumia’s ‘impeccable’ football skills

Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has proven to be a man of many talents.

The 59-year-old statesman decided to motivate the senior national team, Black Stars, ahead of their opener against Portugal on Thursday, November 24.

“The moment has come for the Black Stars to take on the world. We have a group of talented players who have been selected and they cannot be intimidated by anyone. • Lloris backs team-mates to step up after injury to Hernandez

Hugo Lloris fears Lucas Hernandez has suffered an “important injury”, dealing France yet another blow as they bid to defend their World Cup crown.

France began their campaign with a 4-1 win over Australia on Tuesday but were without Paul Pogba, N’Golo Kante, Christopher Nkunku and Karim Benzema, who were all ruled out of the tournament.

And left-back Hernandez was added to that injury list after he went down in attempting to stop Matthew Leckie’s cross for Australia’s shock opener.

The outlook does not look positive for the Bayern Munich defender, but France captain Lloris hopes his team-mates can rally as they have done before.

“It’s never good to see one of your team-mates leaving the field in that way,” he said. “I believe it’s an important injury.

“He’s not the first one, but we have to continue to look forward. Unfortunately we could not count on him, but we have a team with other players that we trust.

“We have to stay together and keep believing, keep our focus on that.”

Lloris added: “We have important players left on the side for injuries, but luckily we have a lot of talented players in France, players we can trust, because they have the talent, the mentality and the desire to perform at the highest level.

“We try to create something special inside the team day by day. We try to enjoy the moment, not only on the pitch but also off the pitch.

“We have to take it game by game. Obviously it’s a World Cup, there’s no easy games and we have to be ready to face difficulties. When we face difficulties, we have to make sure that everybody raises their level.”

The previous three holders have exited the World Cup at the group stage, but that sequence appears unlikely to be extended now.

Indeed, France’s 4-1 win was the biggest in the first game of a title defence in World Cup history.

“We’re obviously pleased with the result and pleased with the performance,” Lloris said.

“I believe we had a good start in that game, but unfortunately we conceded that goal. We also lost one of our team-mates in this action by injury.

“But the team stayed calm, and we took control of the game and slowly started to dominate and created chances, then we scored one and two.

“Second half, I think we controlled perfectly. It’s a good start.”

  • Rooney unsurprised by Ronaldo’s United exit

Wayne Rooney was not surprised by Manchester United’s decision to part company with Cristiano Ronaldo, saying the club had “no other choice”.

Ronaldo’s United departure seemed inevitable when he gave an explosive interview to Piers Morgan, saying the club had “betrayed” him and declaring he did not respect manager Erik ten Hag.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner also used the interview to attack several former United players who had criticised his conduct this season.

Rooney labelled Ronaldo’s actions an “unwanted distraction” after he was suspended by United for refusing to come on as a substitute in last month’s win over Tottenham, comments the Portugal forward subsequently said were rooted in jealousy.

On Tuesday, United announced Ronaldo had left the club by mutual agreement, a decision Rooney believes was inevitable.

Speaking to Sports 18 following the club’s announcement, Rooney said: “Am I surprised? No.

“There was no other choice, but that’s a shame because he’s been a fantastic servant to the club. I wish him the best wherever he goes.”

Ronaldo, 37, leaves United having scored 145 goals across two spells at Old Trafford, though he only found the net once for the Red Devils in the Premier League this campaign.

  • Joseph Wollacott arrives in Doha to join Black Stars before Portugal game

England-based Ghana goalkeeper, Joseph Wollacott safely arrived in Doha, Qatar to join his Black Stars teammates ahead of the game against Portugal on Thursday.

It can be recalled that your most trusted online portal on Monday reported that the Charlton Athletic shot-stopper will be in Qatar for the mundial although he will not feature in any of the matches.

The goalkeeper suffered a finger injury days before Ghana opened camp for the World Cup and hence has been ruled out of the tournament.

His injury came just hours after his rival for the number one jersey in the Ghana side, Richard Ofori, had been ruled out with a knee problem, leaving the Black Stars with a goalkeeping crisis.

St Gallen shot-stopper Lawrence Ati-Zigi is expected to be Ghana’s No.1 at the tournament and was in post during the 2-0 friendly win over in Switzerland last Thursday.

The Ghana FA has made arrangements for him to be part of the squad at the ongoing tournament. He will be with the Black Stars to motivate the team, especially the goalkeepers who are in camp to do the job he would have done if not for his injury.

Ghana is one of five African countries representing the African continent at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

The Black Stars are set to compete in Group H of the group stages of the tournament. In that group, Ghana will battle it out with two-time champions Uruguay, as well as European giants Portugal.

The other group’s opponent is South Korea from Asia.

With the 2022 FIFA World Cup already starting on Sunday, November 20, Ghana’s Black Stars will play their first match on November 24.

Subsequently, Ghana will take on South Korea on November 28 before finishing the group stages campaign with a rematch against Uruguay.

  • Hernandez set for long spell out after rupturing ACL

Lucas Hernandez will miss the rest of the World Cup, and likely the remainder of the season, after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

France were dealt a huge blow by injuries ahead of their campaign in Qatar, which began with a 4-1 rout of Australia on Tuesday.

Paul Pogba, N’Golo Kante, Karim Benzema and Christopher Nkunku were all ruled out before the tournament started, and now Didier Deschamps has lost another key player.

Hernandez suffered the injury nine minutes into the win over Australia, as he went down clutching his right knee after being turned by Matthew Leckie in the build-up to Craig Goodwin’s opening goal.

Deschamps and Hugo Lloris both conceded after the match that it did not look positive for the Bayern Munich defender, and France have now confirmed the 26-year-old’s ruptured his ACL.

Given the extent of his injury, Hernandez will miss a chunk of the rest of the 2022-23 campaign when it resumes after the World Cup.

“Like the whole group, players and staff, I am extremely sorry for Lucas,” said Deschamps.

“We are losing an important element. Lucas is a warrior and I have no doubt that he will do everything possible to return to the game.

“I know him well. Courage, he will have it, that’s for sure. On behalf of the group, I wish him the best possible recovery.”

  • Manchester United owners Glazers consider selling Premier League club

Manchester United’s owners the Glazer family say they are considering selling the club as they “explore strategic alternatives”.

The Americans bought the club for £790m ($1.34bn) in 2005.

Their move follows years of protest from fans against the ownership.

A statement from the club said the board will “consider all strategic alternatives, including new investment into the club, a sale, or other transactions involving the company”.

It added that the process “will include an assessment of several initiatives to strengthen the club, including stadium and infrastructure redevelopment, and expansion of the club’s commercial operations on a global scale” to enhance “the long-term success of the club’s men’s, women’s and academy teams, and bringing benefits to fans and other stakeholders”.

In 2012, the Glazers sold 10% of their holding via a stock listing and have sold further shares in the following years.

“As we seek to continue building on the club’s history of success, the board has authorised a thorough evaluation of strategic alternatives,” said executive co-chairmen and directors Avram Glazer and Joel Glazer.

“We will evaluate all options to ensure that we best serve our fans and that Manchester United maximises the significant growth opportunities available to the club today and in the future.

“Throughout this process we will remain fully focused on serving the best interests of our fans, shareholders, and various stakeholders.”

The Glazer family have owned NFL side Tampa Bay Buccaneers since 1995 and Avram Glazer bought a team in the new United Arab Emirates Twenty20 cricket league in 2021.

Joel and Avram took over the day-to-day running of United after their father Malcolm suffered a stroke in April 2006. Billionaire Malcolm died aged 85 in 2014.

American investment firm Raine Group, who handled Chelsea’s £4.25bn sale in May, is exclusively advising United.

The statement from the club added: “There can be no assurance that the review being undertaken will result in any transaction involving the company.

“Manchester United does not intend to make further announcements regarding the review unless and until the board has approved a specific transaction or other course of action requiring a formal announcement.”

United, who are fifth in the Premier League, have not won the title since 2013 and have not won a trophy since claiming the Europa League and EFL Cup in 2017.

There have been multiple protests against the Glazers’ ownership in recent years, including one in May 2021 that caused United’s home league match against Liverpool to be postponed.

Thousands of supporters marched to Old Trafford in protest before the same fixture this season, in August.

United were part of the failed European Super League project that rapidly collapsed in April 2021. Manchester United co-chairman Joel Glazer later apologised for the unrest it caused.

He has since attended fans’ forums in the wake of supporter unrest and pledged to make shares available to the club’s followers.

According to Transfermarkt, United have a net spend of 1.36bn euros (£1.18bn) on transfers under the Glazers, with only Manchester City having a higher figure in that period.

Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo, who left Manchester United with immediate effect on Tuesday, criticised the club ownership in a controversial interview last week – including saying the Glazer family “don’t care about the club” on the sporting side.

The move to sell United comes after Liverpool chairman Tom Werner said Fenway Sports Group were “exploring a sale”.

A Bloomberg report in August 2022 said the Glazer family were willing to sell a minority stake in the club.

British billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe said he would be interested in buying United but then stated in October that the Glazer family had told him they did not want to sell.

  • Australia in awe of Mbappe as Kuol sets sights on ‘that level’

Garang Kuol became Australia’s youngest World Cup star on Tuesday but noted the “big difference” he must bridge in order to regularly rub shoulders with the likes of Kylian Mbappe.

Kuol, who at 18 years and 68 days old was the ninth-youngest player in the tournament’s history, was brought on as a 73rd-minute substitute moments after the final goal in the Socceroos’ 4-1 opening defeat to holders France.

The highly talented winger – already confirmed as a Newcastle United signing ahead of a January move – enjoyed a few bright touches yet saw a significant gap to his opponents.

Kuol did not start a single A-League game for Central Coast Mariners, although he scored six goals in 326 minutes from the bench.

Meanwhile, Mbappe was France’s star man as they took the title in Russia 2018 four years ago and appears to be in the mood to repeat the feat.

“You could see the level that they’re at,” Kuol said afterwards.

“They’re 6ft 4[in] people who are as quick as me, so there was a big difference between me and some of those players. Only hard work will get me to that level.

“I think it was a good taste to see the level the players are at. Some play in the Premier League, some play in the Champions League, so it was good to get that taste of the level.”

Mbappe in particular was relentless after a slow start had seen Australia lead through Craig Goodwin in the ninth minute.

The Paris Saint-Germain forward scored the third goal before creating the fourth for Olivier Giroud, having also had a role in the second – again scored by Giroud.

Mbappe had 19 touches in the Australia box – the most by any player in a World Cup match since 1970 – and completed three dribbles.

Australia right-back Nathaniel Atkinson endured a torrid time, not helped by the introduction of attacking France left-back Theo Hernandez after his brother Lucas was injured attempting to prevent the Socceroos goal.

Atkinson was dribbled past twice and gave away possession on 12 occasions, including an error leading to France’s second.

“It’s obviously the first time I’ve come up against this type of opposition in my career,” Atkinson said.

“Obviously, I’ve taken full responsibility for the second goal, but the beauty of the tournament is you can’t dwell on it because you’ve got another game to fix it in three days.

“It’s a good experience. It’s an eye-opener. There’s a reason [Mbappe] is earning 200million [Australian] dollars a year and I am where I am, but that’s something to look forward to.

“It’s good to come up against this calibre. You know what to work on. I know what to fix; I’ve played that scenario 50 times over and I could probably come up with 50 different solutions. That’s football. I’m disappointed.

“It’s just the physicality of the guy. The pace… it’s not hidden how quick that guy is – you give him one step and he’s gone.

“As a team, you can always come up with a plan, but sometimes if it’s one-v-one and he gets the better of you, it’s a learning curve.

“You can get your confidence up with getting a few challenges in, but there’s a reason why he’s one of the top three players in the world.”

Australia are not giving up hope, inspired by Saudi Arabia’s sensational defeat of Argentina earlier on Tuesday.

“Anything can happen,” Atkinson added. “You see what Saudi did against Argentina.

“We’ve come up against the world champions, and there’s a reason for that. They’re a good footballing team. We can take confidence from the way we played early on in that game.”

  • England skipper Kane to undergo ankle scan amid injury scare

England captain Harry Kane will go for a scan on his ankle ahead of the Three Lions’ next World Cup encounter against the United States.

Kane was brought down in a heavy challenge by Morteza Pouraliganji three minutes into the second half of England’s 6-2 thrashing of Iran on Monday.

After some treatment, the striker picked himself up and continued until the 75th minute, when he was replaced by Newcastle forward Callum Wilson.

Kane was seen limping after the match with his right ankle strapped, though manager Gareth Southgate appeared unworried over the striker’s fitness, saying he was replaced because the game was already won.

But the Tottenham star will now have his injury assessed, causing concern over the talisman’s availability for England’s second Group B fixture against the USA on Friday.

The 29-year-old registered two assists before making way for Wilson as England ran riot against Iran and would be a huge miss for Southgate if his ankle injury proves serious enough to rule him out.

Kane is just two goals away from equalling Wayne Rooney’s 53 goals as the Three Lions’ all-time top scorer.

  • My love for Man Utd will never change – Ronaldo after club exit

Cristiano Ronaldo has confirmed reports by Manchester United that he and the club have reach an agreement to terminate their contract early.

On Tuesday, the club’s management made it known that Ronaldo is leaving the Red Devils after mutual agreement.

Some few hours after the announcement, Ronaldo took to his social media and said “it feels like the right time for me to seek a new challenge.”

However, the Portugal sensation noted that “I love Manchester United and I love the fans, that will never ever change.”

Ronaldo wished the team the best in their future endeavors.

Man Utd and Ronaldo parted ways after the number 7 forward made shocking comments about the club during an interview with Piers Morgan.

The Portugal star took aim at manager Erik ten Hag, United’s ownership under the Glazer family, and several other members of the club’s hierarchy.

“I shouldn’t say that [they were trying to get rid of me], I don’t know, but yes, I feel betrayed. I felt that some people didn’t want me here not only this year, but last year too.”

Asked about his relationship with Ten Hag, Ronaldo replied: “I don’t have respect for him because he doesn’t show respect for me.

“If you don’t have respect for me, I’m never going to have respect for you.”

After his scathing comments, Cristiano Ronaldo acknowledged a Manchester United future appears unlikely.

Meanwhile, Man Utd say “everyone at Manchester United remains focused on continuing the team’s progress under Erik ten Hag and working together to deliver success on the pitch.”

  • ‘I’m sorry we can’t take a stand for human rights, apparently’ – Flick frustrated by FIFA’s OneLove stance

Germany coach Hansi Flick refused to hide his frustration at FIFA’s decision to ban teams from wearing the OneLove armband at the World Cup.

The OneLove campaign, which promotes “inclusion and sends a message against discrimination of any kind”, grew in significance ahead of the tournament in Qatar, partly due to the host country’s criminalisation of homosexuality and poor human rights record.

Germany were one of seven European nations to back the initiative, which involved captains wearing special armbands featuring a multi-coloured heart.

The move was shelved on Monday after it emerged FIFA was set to impose “sporting sanctions” on the teams involved, with the expectation being that captains would be booked at kick-off for wearing the armband.

While FIFA has been criticised for seemingly opposing an anti-discrimination gesture, teams have also been slammed for lacking the bravery to proceed regardless of sanction threats.

Although Flick did not address the criticism of the teams, he did express regret regarding FIFA’s decision.

“About the armband, together with the DFB [German Football Association] and the other countries, we wanted to do this to take a stand, and then what happened is FIFA threatened us with sanctions and the associations were told [on Monday] at short notice,” Flick told reporters ahead of Wednesday’s Group E opener against Japan.

“If you want to run a campaign as a group, you should stick to decisions.

“Of course, it’s a shock for the team to not do it, it was a sign of human rights and diversity. And the way I treat my team, the values I and the team represent, well all of that is based on mutual respect, mutual appreciation, that’s just part of life. I expect that from everyone.

“There are some parties involved who think differently. We wanted to embody our values.”

Regarding the threat of a potential instant yellow card, Flick said: “We talked about it, a yellow card can happen. If [Joshua] Kimmich then has to leave pitch, we have options. However, it was unclear and the mere threat of sanctions was difficult for us, especially because it was so short notice before the England and Netherlands games, that’s when the decision was communicated.

“We didn’t have time to react, the federations decided to take responsibility off the players’ shoulders and that’s why the situation is what it is now.

“I’m sorry we can’t be here and take a stand for human rights, apparently.”

Midfielder Kimmich largely echoed the sentiment of his coach, expressing shock at Monday’s announcement.

He also questioned how much players should be expected to use their platforms to fight for social causes, pointing out that ultimately they are in Qatar to play football.

“Eventually there was a decision of the DFB, a decision supported by everyone: England and all the other teams,” Kimmich said.

“Generally speaking, I was quite surprised because a few weeks ago when we discussed the armband, I felt people were criticising it. A lot of people thought it was pointless, a fig leaf, but I think it was a strong stance to take.

“We as players, and the DFB, have addressed the issues and problems. We had a campaign on human rights, and in Nepal we’ll work on donations for supporting people. I think we’re good at pointing out things around the world that are not going well, but now we concentrate on the football.

“On Qatar being awarded the World Cup, it was 12 years ago, I was 15, now I have to keep making statements.

“We are all very aware. Time and time again we have had the opportunity to point out mistakes and issues in the world, but we have to be honest as well, here we don’t learn enough about what’s going on in the world because we are busy training, playing games. You [the media] have the opportunity to go out and see.

“I think it’s important us as players to take advantage of our platforms to point out wrongs, but we also have to focus on the game regardless of where the World Cup is hosted.

“It’s the greatest competition out there for footballers. It’s every boy’s dream to participate in it. I think a lot of people tried to convince us we shouldn’t be looking forward to it, many at home aren’t excited, but I should be able to look forward even if it’s here.”

  • Ronaldo to leave Man Utd immediately, club says

Manchester United have revealed that Cristiano Ronaldo is to leave the club with immediate effect.

On their website, Manchester United stated that the number 7 player leaves by mutual agreement.

“The club thanks him for his immense contribution across two spells at Old Trafford,” the club’s statement added.

This comes after Ronaldo made shocking comments about the club during an interview with Piers Morgan.

“I don’t know what’s going to happen after the World Cup, but as I told you before, and I will say again, the fans will be always in my heart.

“I hope that they never forget the things that I will continue to do it. Not only in the past, but in the present too. Manchester will be always in my side, the fans will be always on my side.

“It doesn’t matter what’s going to happen. When I arrived at Manchester United, I am always available to help the team to do good things, to put them in the right spots to compete with the best teams,” he said.

Ronaldo since then has been linked with the likes of Chelsea, Juventus and Atletico Madrid among a plethora of Europe’s elite clubs.

Ronaldo scored 145 goals and made 346 appearances while at Manchester United.

Meanwhile, Man Utd say “everyone at Manchester United remains focused on continuing the team’s progress under Erik ten Hag and working together to deliver success on the pitch.”

  • Davies declared fit for Canada’s clash with Belgium on World Cup return

Alphonso Davies has been declared fit by head coach John Herdman for Canada’s clash with Belgium on their return to the World Cup stage.

The Bayern Munich left-back’s participation in Qatar was in doubt after he sustained a hamstring injury against Hertha Berlin on November 5.

Davies sat out Bayern’s final two matches prior to the mid-season break and Herdman said at the weekend he was unsure exactly when the 22-year-old would return.

However, in a huge boost for Canada ahead of Wednesday’s Group F showdown with Belgium at Ahmed bin Ali Stadium, Herdman has confirmed Davies is ready to feature.

“You’ve just got to go through the algorithms they put in front of you to progress to hit top speed, which he’s hit,” Herdman said at Tuesday’s pre-match press conference.

“He’s been clear he wanted to play. He’s been in full training and got that big smile on his face, so that’s great.

“I don’t think there’d be any doubt we’d be starting him, but you’ve got to follow the medical advice. Our goal first and foremost is always the safety of the players.

“As a coach you’re always frustrated when you get the reports in and all the algorithms on returning to play, what they can and can’t do and loadings, et cetera.

“But when you speak to the player you have to look into their eyes and get a sense of what they want, how far they’re willing to push, and you’ve got to ask the questions.

“If not the first game, then what’s the risk for the second game? At the end of the day, he’s fit now, he’s hit his markers, he’s ready to go. He was flying in training yesterday.”

Canada are back at the World Cup following a 36-year absence – the second-longest gap between participations of any nation at this year’s tournament behind only Wales (64 years).

The Reds topped their CONCACAF qualifying group while scoring the most goals in the final round (23) and conceding the fewest (seven).

Herdman also provided positive updates on the fitness of Stephen Eustaquio and Milan Borjan ahead of facing a Belgium side ranked second in FIFA’s world rankings.

“I think we’re in a position now where we can field our strongest team,” he said. “Everyone’s come through training.

“It’s exciting times for us now – the dark clouds have shifted. This is our last training session together and we’ll all be 100 per cent.”

Canada lost their only previous meeting with Belgium 2-0 in an Ottawa friendly 33 years ago.

  • SHS student drowns in river in attempt to fetch water

A student reportedly of the Gyaase SHS in the Assin North District of the Central Region has drowned in the Konkoon river.

The deceased, said to be Joseph Asante was fetching water to bathe from the river following a water shortage at the school.

Authorities of the school say the taps have been shut for a while and there was no mechanised borehole to serve as a backup.

Assin North Educational Director, Dr. Juliet Otami Boateng in an interview with ADOM FM said the student was pronounced dead after he was rushed to the St. Francis Hospital.

“We were shocked by the news of his death so we conducted some investigations. That Saturday morning the school’s tap was flowing. However, it was announced that they were going to close it. He later asked permission to go with his mate to fetch water for their bath. It was at the stream that he slipped and fell and drowned. His body was retrieved but was pronounced dead at the St. Francis Hospital,” she narrated.

According to the authorities, students rely on the river whenever there is water shortage.

Meanwhile, Dr. Juliet Otami Boateng has revealed that the school will provide mechanized boreholes as a backup to avoid such occurrences in the future.

  • Depay looking for ‘more rhythm’ after ‘little bit of a part’ in opening win

Memphis Depay was frustrated to be restricted to the role of a substitute in the Netherlands’ World Cup opener, but he is confident of having a greater impact in coming matches.

Depay had been ruled out of Monday’s match against Senegal in Louis van Gaal’s pre-match news conference.

But the Barcelona forward appeared on the bench and was introduced in the final half an hour with the game still goalless.

Although Depay did not get on the scoresheet, he was involved in the build-up to both Oranje goals in a 2-0 win, with Cody Gakpo scoring the first before Davy Klaassen tucked away the rebound from the Netherlands number 10’s shot.

Speaking afterwards, Depay said: “I feel good, I feel good, I feel fit. Obviously a player like me always wants to start from the kick-off, but this was the plan and now we focus on the next game.

“I’m sure that I’ll feel better, and I’ll work hard to find more rhythm. I’m happy that I could do a little bit of a part in 30 minutes today.”

On Gakpo, who benefited from Depay’s absence and was preferred to Klaassen, he said: “I’m very happy for him. He’s a hard worker, he’s very dedicated in his career. He’s a young baller.

“I’m very happy. He’s a great guy, a young guy, lots to learn, so I’m sure you’ll see more moments like this.”

Despite missing out on the XI, the stoppage-time clincher was also a big moment for Klaassen.

“It’s a dream, of course,” he said. “It’s my first World Cup game, so to score your first World Cup goal and to win… you can’t ask much more.”

Klaassen was also asked about the OneLove captain’s armband, which Virgil van Dijk had been due to wear until FIFA threatened sanctions.

The campaign promotes “inclusion and sends a message against discrimination of any kind”, but those planning to wear the armband feared they would immediately be shown a yellow card.

“We’re still behind the statement,” Klaassen added. “FIFA forced us to not wear it, but the statement is still there.”

Van Dijk himself did not appear impressed by discussion of the topic, saying: “You know exactly what the outcome was.

“Two hours before the England game, the news came out, and I was sleeping at the time. I had no influence on anything.

“I’m not dealing with the armband because I don’t want to get a yellow card.”

  • GIMPA Law School to hold new elections after claims of rigging

The Dean of the Faculty of Law at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA), Dr. Kwaku Agyemang-Budu, has annulled the Law Students Association Elections held in June 2022.

The Dean made the move following a recommendation by an Inter-faculty committee.

The Inter-faculty committee was constituted by Dr. Kwaku Agyemang-Budu to look into the claims of vote rigging brought by one of the contestants in the election, Mr. Michael Adu Takyi, a Pro-Npp candidate.

Maxwell Adu Takyi – Petitioner (Pro-NPP)

The election had originally been called by the Electoral Commission in favor of the Pro-NDC candidate, Mr. Festus Matey but was challenged by Mr. Adu Takyi on several claims including over-voting.

    Mr. Festus Matey – 1st Defendant (Pro-NDC)

    STATEMENT OF CLAIM – PETITIONER
    1) The Petitioner is a level 400 student of the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA), pursuing a Bachelor of Laws programme and a member of the GIMPA Law Students Association (LSA).

    2) The first defendant is the principal legal advisor of the Law Students’ Association.

    3) The Electoral Commission of the Law Students’ Association is established under Article 10 of the Constitution of Law Students Association and is the only institution mandated by the LSA Constitution to conduct and supervise all elections pertaining to elective posts of the LSA.

    4) The petitioner contends further that the Electoral Commission (EC), in accordance with Article 10(1) to 10(4) of the LSA Constitution was constituted.

    5) The Electoral Commission conducted the GIMPA LSA Election 2022 which was shrouded in conspiracy with many instances of irregularities reported.

    6) On 1st June 2022, following a meeting with management in an attempt to resolve the election concerns of all parties, it was resolved that the election should be held the following day on the caveat that all the aspirants had to meet with the Electoral Commissioner (EC), and should they have any reasonable concerns the EC had to address same before voting.

    7) The Petitioner’s experts after analyzing the system found many irregularities bothering on the registration, mode of elections and software issues.

    8) Concerns were raised with the EC and unfortunately, it fell on deaf ears. The report of the Petitioner’s expert consulted is tendered into evidence and titled “Election Credibility Report”.

    9) During the Election, numerous instances of irregularities were recorded (video recording). The EC did not recognize the PDF as the election results.

Interestingly, all three (3) Electoral Commissioners responsible for conducting and declaring the winners for the various positions contested were conspicuously absent during the hearing. They were however represented by their legal representative.

    RESPONSE BY EC REPRESENTATIVE

    1)The 2nd Respondent admitted to paragraphs 1, 2, 3 and 4 of the petitioner’s petition.

    2) The 2nd Respondent denied paragraph 5 of the petitioner’s petition and says that, the averment in paragraph 5 of the petitioner’s petition is a blatant lie and is aimed at throwing dust in the eyes of this honorable committee to prejudice and embarrass the 2nd Respondent.

    3) The 2nd Respondent admitted to paragraph 6 in part to the extent that, there was an election run on Wednesday, 1st June, 2022 which was rerun on Thursday 2nd June, 2022 after the concerns of all interested parties have been resolved.

    4) The 2nd Respondent denied paragraph 7 of the petitioner’s petition and says that, the petitioner is on a journey of self-serving unrealistic and unproved facts and puts the petitioner to strict proof.

    5) The 2nd Respondent denied paragraphs 8 and 8 as repeated in the petition, denies paragraphs 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 and 15 of the petitions as presented by the petitioner and says that these are concocted allegations without any merit and puts petitioner to strict proof.

    6) The 2nd respondent in as mandated by Article 10 of the LSA Constitution on Thursday, 2nd June, 2022 duly conducted a most credible election which had the 3rd Respondent emerge as the elected candidate for the President of the GIMPA LSA.

    7) The 2nd respondent stated that the election was rerun solely to afford all candidates a fair audit of the system prior to the rerun-on Thursday, 2nd June, 2022 and petitioner never raised any concerns with the credibility of the electoral system but rather submitted himself to the conduct of the election.

    8) The 2nd respondent averred that the petitioner never carried out any audit or provided a reason for his failure to audit the system before the election of Thursday, 2nd June, 2022 as agreed to by all parties.

    9) The 2nd respondent further submitted that no credible, germane audit was carried out by the petitioner or any of his assigns which demonstrated any flaw or insecurity in the entire electoral process carried out on Thursday, 2nd June, 2022.

    10) The 2nd respondent submitted that the allegations made by the petitioner to seem as facts are untrue, unreliable, irrelevant and constitute trumped up allegations crafted to fit the petitioner’s narrative.

    11) The 2nd respondent stated that the petitioner by his own admission commissioned at least one unauthorized, hostile actor to interfere with the electoral system while the election was underway leading to the pause of voting in order to safeguard cast ballots and to eliminate any possibility of a success in the attempt to alter the votes cast, after which voting resumed.

    12) The 2nd respondent submitted that the EC carried out its duties fully and within the stipulation of Article 11 of the LSA Constitution and never fouled any rules governing elections as the results declared depict the true state and nature of the election of executives for the GIMPA LSA.

    13) The 2nd respondent with leave of court during the trial shall render evidence and produce all relevant documents where necessary to assist the court in coming to a justiciable conclusion.

    14) Wherefore the 2nd respondent denied the claims of the petitioner.

    CONCLUSIONS BY COMMITTEE

First, during the hearing, the EC Representative was unable to provide the requested evidence which affected the credibility of their claim that the election was free and fair. The representative rather gave excuses to justify the absence of the requested evidence. For instance, he said the systems report was unavailable because the election software vendor had destroyed the data since he had no more contract with the Commission.

The systems report would have helped this committee to compare and verify the election results as generated from the system directly, and that of what was declared by the Electoral Commission as displayed in an editable Microsoft Word document projected on the wall of the “strong room”. The situation we faced is like a paper-based election without “pink sheets”.

Further, the audit trail would have helped this committee to verify the allegations of the system’s outage during the election exercise. This verification is important because the system’s outage is further linked to two allegations:

    a) That the system was deliberately hacked to prevent further voting so that the election results will be declared as is, in favour of one of the candidates.

    b) That the presidential election results were swapped to disadvantage the losing candidate. Hence, we could have verified the electorate’s choices – albeit anonymously.

Second, neither the election software nor its developer was available for demonstration and questioning, respectively. The committee would have done a run-through of the software by undertaking a typical vote, and then generating a report to understand the software’s algorithm. Our inability to achieve this cast doubts on the inner workings of the algorithm, especially because some of the candidates did not have the opportunity to conduct a pre-election audit of the software – whether deliberately or accidentally.

Third, on the technical difficulties the committee faced with accessing the software, its audit trail and the
voting data, we suggest a lack of transparency in the electoral process which casts a doubt on the election results.

Though the Committee’s focus was the elections on June 2, 2022 we noted that there were some gaps in the LSA Constitution which are that:

    • There are no clear guidelines for the election process.

    • The LSA Vice President position is independently contested which has the tendency to create an imbalance in the leadership representation.• The independence of the EC is not well outlined.

FINAL DECISION BY DEAN OF SCHOOL OF LAW

Acting per the recommendations of the Inter-faculty committee, the Dean of the School of Law, Dr. Kwaku Agyeman-Budu directed as follows:

    a. The LSA Elections of June 2022 is set aside.

    b. For the avoidance of doubt, the following persons previously elected on 2nd June 2022 as LSA executives are no longer LSA executives and are hereby prohibited from holding themselves as such:

    Festus Matey

    Rosabeth Akiwele Avio

    Grace Fredericka Lutterodt

    Nathaniel Akyea

    c. An Interim Management Committee (IMC) made up of class representatives from all levels and streams (Day and Evening) is to be constituted immediately to manage the affairs of the LSA until new LSA electives are elected.

  • Musah becomes USA’s youngest World Cup starter against Wales

Yunus Musah became the first teenager to be named in the United States‘ starting line-up for a World Cup match ahead of their Group B opener against Wales on Monday.

Having missed out on qualification for the tournament in Russia four years ago, Gregg Berhalter’s side marked their return to the finals at the Ahmed Bin Ali Stadium, against a Wales side featuring at just their second World Cup.

Musah, who also made his senior international debut against Wales in 2020, is now the youngest player to start a World Cup match for the USA, aged 19 years and 358 days.

The Valencia midfielder also becomes the first LaLiga-based player to represent the Stars and Stripes at the finals, while 10 of the starting XI play their club football in Europe – the team’s highest total in a World Cup line-up.

Musah was selected to partner Tyler Adams in midfield, with the Leeds United man – aged 23 years and 279 days – becoming the USA’s youngest World Cup captain since Harry Keough in 1950.

Berhalter, who becomes the first person to represent the Stars and Stripes at the World Cup as a player and coach, began with Matt Turner in goal behind a back four of Sergino Dest, Walker Zimmerman, Tim Ream and Antonee Robinson.

Adams and Musah were selected to anchor the midfield behind Timothy Weah, Weston McKennie and Christian Pulisic, with Josh Sargent starting as a lone striker.

Meanwhile, Gareth Bale – at least temporarily – drew level with Chris Gunter’s record of 109 Wales caps, with the full-back being named on the bench by Rob Page.

Wayne Hennessey was preferred to Danny Ward in goal behind a back three of Chris Mepham, Joe Rodon and Ben Davies.

Connor Roberts, Ethan Ampadu, Aaron Ramsey, Harry Wilson and Neco Williams comprised a five-man midfield, with Dan James providing support to Bale in attack.

  • Argentina prepare for first World Cup since Maradona death

Argentina head to their first World Cup since Diego Maradona’s death but the Albiceleste great will be there in spirit.

That was the message from Maradona’s former agent Guillermo Coppola at the opening of CONMEBOL’s ‘Tree of Dreams’ in Doha to celebrate South America’s rich football heritage.

Lionel Scaloni’s side are among the pre-tournament favourites in Qatar ahead of Tuesday’s Group C opener against Saudi Arabia, searching for a first World Cup crown since a Maradona-inspired triumph in 1986.

There has not been a South American winner of FIFA’s top tournament since Brazil in 2002, but Coppola hopes that will change for Argentina in their first outing since Maradona passed in November 2020.

“This is going to be the first World Cup that [Maradona] is not physically with us,” said the 74-year-old. “But Diego will always be with us.

“The most precious good for Diego was the football. It wasn’t life, which is the most precious good that human beings have.

“It wasn’t freedom – to be able to decide and to do – which is the second one, the freedom for him was the ball.

“Where a ball rolls there is Diego, do not forget this, when you see a ball rolling say, there is Diego.”

Argentina ended a 28-year wait for major silverware by beating Brazil in the 2021 Copa America final.

That makes this the first World Cup they enter as champions of South America since USA 94 and former Argentina captain Javier Zanetti expects his country to come out fighting as a unified group.

Speaking alongside World Cup winners Oscar Ruggeri and Mario Alberto Kempes, Zanetti added: “It means a lot to have a united, consolidated, solid group.

“I trust that Argentina is a group that came to Qatar knowing well what they want.”

While Zanetti, now Inter vice-president, acknowledged the ill-timing of the November World Cup, he has little doubt Argentina will hit the ground running.

“We cannot know about the physical condition because this World Cup is atypical,” the 49-year-old continued.

“It is being played in November and many consecutive games were played recently, so there is a lot of fatigue.

“But in general, I trust that players and national teams will arrive in good condition.”

  • Saudi boss calls it ‘an honour’ to face Messi

Lionel Messi begins his World Cup campaign on Tuesday against Saudi Arabia, whose head coach is looking forward to the challenge.

Herve Renard’s men face Argentina in their Group C opener and the experienced French coach insists his team are not just in Qatar to make up the numbers.

All six of Messi’s goals at previous World Cups have been scored in the group stages, while he has netted 12 times in 19 games for Paris Saint-Germain this season.

Speaking at a press conference on Monday, Renard said: “Cristiano [Ronaldo] and Messi are football legends and thanks to them, football is different. It’s an honour to be here and play against them.

“When there’s a fight you have to be one hundred per cent motivated to beat the best. That’s the beauty of sport. In sport, there can always be surprises.

“We have to be ready. Above all, we have to be very good in all three games, not only against Argentina. All three are equally important.”

Saudi Arabia will come up against Mexico and Poland after taking on the Albiceleste in what appears an incredibly challenging task for Renard’s men in Group C.

While conceding it is unlikely Saudi Arabia will qualify, Renard insisted his team – ranked 51st in the FIFA rankings, one place below hosts Qatar – will “fight against the forecasts”.

“We love it when they forget about us from the outside,” he said. “We like this, that they consider us the smallest team. It doesn’t matter to us. It’s justified if we take into account the FIFA ranking.

“I don’t think we’ll go to the next round but we’re here to fight against the forecasts. In the World Cup, there are surprises and that is the mentality we have.”

  • World Cup 2022: Ghana clash the most difficult – Ronaldo

Portugal captain, Cristiano Ronaldo, has described their opening 2022 World Cup group game against Ghana as the ‘most difficult’ in the competition.

Speaking about Portugal’s chances of winning the World Cup, the 37-year-old noted that the team must focus their attention on winning their first game against Ghana, which he described as the ‘most difficult.

“I believe our national team has tremendous potential to win the World Cup. We will see. I believe we can. I have that hope, that belief, ” the Manchester United forward said.

“But like these competitions always teach us; we must think calmly. We must think and focus on the first group game. We must think about the Ghana game which is the most difficult one.

“We must start well, gain some confidence and we will go from there,” he said.

The European side will come up against the West African country on Thursday, November 24, 2022, at Stadium 974 in Doha.

Ghana will also play against South Korea and Uruguay in the group.

The Black Stars who are making their fourth appearance at the Mundial will hope to perform after exiting the group phase in Brazil in 2014.

  • Sane ruled out of Germany’s World Cup opener with knee injury

Leroy Sane will miss Germany’s World Cup opener against Japan with a knee injury, the German Football Association (DFB) has confirmed.

The Bayern Munich winger was absent from Die Mannschaft’s final training session in preparation for the Group E fixture at Khalifa International Stadium on Wednesday.

The rest of Germany‘s squad took part in the session.

A DFB statement read: “The German national team must be without Leroy Sane in their World Cup opening game against Japan on Wednesday.

“The 26-year-old attacking player from champions FC Bayern Munich is unavailable against the four-time Asian champions due to knee problems. The remaining 25 players of the German World Cup squad took part in the final training session in Al-Shamal.

“After lunch, the four-time world champions’ squad head to Qatar’s capital, Doha, where captain Manuel Neuer and company will spend the night before the opening game.”

While the loss of Sane, who has scored 11 times in 45 appearances for his country, obviously represents a blow, head coach Hansi Flick does have a wealth of attacking options to choose from with Serge Gnabry, Julian Brandt, Mario Gotze, Kai Havertz and Jamal Musiala all available.

  • World Cup 2022: Black Stars players competent enough to match Portugal – GFA

Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Henry Asante Twum is defiant about the Black Stars chances ahead of the Portugal clash.

The Black Stars who are returning to the global showpiece after missing out in Russia 2018 has been housed in Group H against Portugal, Uruguay and South Korea.

On Thursday, Ghana will open their campaign with a clash against former European champions Portugal before taking on South Korea and Uruguay in subsequent games.

Giving update ahead of the Portugal encounter, the Ghana FA spokesman expressed that the Black Stars has got competent players enough to match their Portuguese counterparts.

“People keep talking about Portugal but one simple I give them is that, they may have the stars but we have a team, capable and competent players to match them” he said.

The Black Stars having missed out in the last edition hosted in Russia in 2018 will be hoping to improve their performance in Qatar after exiting the group phase during the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

Only three sides from the continent have ever progressed to the quarter-finals; Cameroon in 1990, Senegal in 2002, and Ghana in 2010.

Ghana will be hoping to progress from the group stage at this year’s tournament.

  • Raphinha wants to give Brazil reason to dance at World Cup

Raphinha hopes Brazil will have reason to dance in celebration at the World Cup as he joked Tite’s side have 10 routines rehearsed for goals.

Brazil are among the tournament favourites in Qatar ahead of their Group G opener on Thursday against Serbia as the Selecao aim for a first World Cup triumph since 2002.

Barcelona winger Raphinha was one of many to celebrate in support of Vinicius Junior, who was told in September by a Spanish journalist to stop dancing “to respect your mates and stop playing the monkey”.

Gabriel Jesus, Neymar and Richarlison – all members of Tite’s 26-man squad in the Middle East – were other notable supporters of Brazil team-mate Vinicius.

Raphinha appears a likely contender to start for the five-time world champions and he intends to give Brazil further reason to celebrate in style at the World Cup.

“To tell you the truth, we already have dances prepared for up to the 10th goal,” an upbeat Raphinha said on Monday.

“We have some 10 dances prepared for each match, one for the first, one for the second, one for the third … If we score more than 10, then we’ll have to start innovating.”

Pedro, Antony and Gabriel Martinelli are the other attacking options at Tite’s disposal and Raphinha has no doubts Brazil will go out to play free-flowing football.

“With Vinicius we gain more speed on the attack, while with [Lucas] Paqueta we have more control near the midfield,” former Leeds United forward Raphinha added.

“But Brazil has a characteristic of always being offensive-minded, no matter who gets to play.”

Richarlison, like Raphinha, will be a World Cup debutant for Brazil after scoring 17 goals in his 38 appearances for the Selecao since his debut in 2018.

The Tottenham striker wants to produce performances befitting of the number-nine shirt handed to him as he aims to follow in the footsteps of the legendary Ronaldo Nazario.

“When you wear the number nine jersey with the Brazilian national team, all you want to do is score goals,” Richarlison said. “With these team-mates, I’m sure the goals will come.”

Neymar came into criticism for posting a photo with six stars on his shorts, referencing a hopeful Brazil triumph at the World Cup, but Richarlison has no problem admitting the Selecao’s hopes.

“We are dreamers, we are going after this sixth star no matter what people are going to say,” he added.

  • Szczesny aiming to help old mate Lewandowski hit the goal trail

Poland goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny is hoping he can help star striker Robert Lewandowski achieve his ambitions on the international stage.

Lewandowski will spearhead the Polish challenge at the World Cup in Qatar, starting with Tuesday’s Group C encounter with Mexico.

The Barcelona striker has enjoyed a glittering club career, most notably at Bayern Munich with whom he won the Champions League in 2020, but has found success harder to come by with the national team. Lewandowski is Poland’s record goalscorer with 76 in 134 appearances – including nine in their qualifying campaign – but has never scored at a World Cup.

Juventus goalkeeper Szczesny said: “I think it’s important for him, he is very motivated.

“No-one doubts that Robert is one of the best players in the world and he would definitely like to see his ambitions come true – not only at his club but also with the national team. We all have the same ambition, not just him.”

Szczesny, 32, and Lewandowski, 34, are most likely playing their final World Cup and the former Arsenal man is hoping to enjoy his “last dance”.

He added: “I do hope we catch a good rhythm and the music will lead us on. This is definitely my last World Cup, and for some of the other players probably, so it would be great to have something to remember as a success.”

He is expecting a tight opener against Tata Martino’s men, however.

“They are at a similar level to us and also have some wonderful players,” he said.

“We are well prepped, we have analysed them well, but we will need to bring the theory to the pitch. We could win or also lose so it will be an interesting game.”

Mexico endured an unconvincing qualifying phase and their form has not improved in recent months with just four wins from their last 11 games.

Expectations are low back home, but Martino insisted that was in contrast to strong belief within the squad.

The former Barcelona coach said: “We always try – regardless of what happens – to be aligned with our whole country.

“We reached the World Cup and we will try to be strong, from what we can control of course. This national team is very strong internally. I don’t know if what happens outside makes us stronger, but what happens internally certainly does.”
