  • Global stars join FIFA in launching Football Unites the World campaign

A host of international icons have joined forces to launch Football Unites the World, the campaign illustrating football’s unrivalled ability to bring people together that will run throughout the FIFA Infantino.

Hassan Al-Haydos, Alisson Becker, Karim Benzema, Lucy Bronze, Didier Drogba, Giulia Gwinn, Kaká, Robert Lewandowski, Carli Lloyd, Édouard Mendy, Lionel Messi, Neymar, Emmanuel Petit and Cristiano Ronaldo have all contributed to the launch videos which highlight the hope, joy and passion that are hallmarks of the most global sport ahead of a tournament that will be followed by more than five billion people worldwide.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino said: “Football brings people together like nothing else and the FIFA World Cup will be a celebration of that unity and passion for the game we love so much.”

Under the umbrella Football Unites the World, FIFA will team up with a range of international partners and organisations to promote and highlight causes such as anti-discrimination, sustainability, and education during the FIFA World Cup.

Mr Infantino continued: “Although football is and should be our main focus, the FIFA World Cup is also about values and causes that extend far beyond the pitch and we are delighted that football stars past and present have joined us to promote and highlight these topics, which also unite the whole world.”

“The campaign is there to celebrate football and the players have provided us with the ideal kick-off, but our sport is also about the fans. In this way, we want them to be part of the global celebration, and that is why we are inviting fans from all over the world to show their passion for football on social media, and by that give the example of how football unites the world,” the FIFA President added.

FIFA will select some of the best images and will display them during the FIFA World Cup which begins on Sunday, 20 November when Qatar take on Ecuador at Al Bayt Stadium, and concludes with the final at the Lusail Stadium on Sunday, 18 December 2022.

  • Brazil not feeling pressure of World Cup expectations, insists Raphinha

Brazil winger Raphinha says he does not see the favourites’ tag as “pressure” ahead of the World Cup, as the Selecao look to end their two-decade wait for the title.

Tite’s side head to Qatar 2022 in search of a first triumph in the competition since victory at Korea/Japan 2002, having gone closest with a third-place finish on home soil in 2014 since.

Despite defeat in the Copa America to Argentina last year, Brazil enter the tournament among the frontrunners, with hopes of bringing a close to their drought.

Barcelona man Raphinha is among the players hoping to make a difference for the nation, but he says being pegged as potential favourites does not faze him.

“I’m ready for the World Cup and I’m working hard to get there as good as I possibly can, both physically and mentally,” he told the Blaugrana’s website.

“The atmosphere is that of a winning national team, ambitious and wanting to win the title. There’s a good vibe among the whole team.

“I don’t see it as pressure, a team like Brazil is always a contender for the World Cup or any other title that they play for. The demand of the fans is normal because we are a high-quality team, with big names.”

Raphinha has racked up 11 caps with Brazil since making his debut while at Leeds United last season, and made the switch to Barca ahead of this season.

It has not been an easy start however, with a Blaugrana team studded with major names slipping out of the Champions League for the second campaign running at the group stage.

The 25-year-old feels he is still bedding into his new surroundings, adding: “I still see myself in a period of adaptation to the club, I think I’m at a time where it has been quite complicated, especially because of my statistics and because of the way I play.”

Brazil kick off their World Cup campaign against Serbia on November 24, before further encounters with Switzerland and Cameroon in Group G.

  • World Cup: Aidoo, Djiku and Sulemana to miss first training session

Black Stars trio Joseph Aidoo, Alexander Djiku and Kamal Deen Sulemana may miss the team’s first training session today, Tuesday.

The three are yet to link up with the rest of the squad in Abu Dhabi as the team begins preparations for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

According to reports, 23 players have reported to camp and arrived in the Arab country on Monday evening.

The players currently in camp include, Andre Ayew, Jordan Ayew, Danlad Ibrahim, Lawrence Ati-Zigi, Nurudeen Abdul Manaf, Mohammed Salisu, Daniel Amartey, Denis Odoi, Baba Abdul Rahman, Gideon Mensah.

The rest are Alidu Seidu, Salis Abdul Samed, Elisha Owusu, Kamal Sowah, Antoine Semenyo, Tariq Lamptey, Osman Bukari, Thomas Partey, Inaki Williams, Abdul Fatawu Issahaku, Daniel Barnieh Afriyie, Mohammed Kudus, and Daniel Kofi Kyereh.

The team will stay in the capital of the United Arab Emirates for four days where they will play an International friendly against Switzerland at the Baniyas club stadium on Thursday, November 17, 2022.

Coach Otto Addo announced his 26-man squad on Monday with several notable names dropped due to injury or loss of form.

  • Bale ‘fit and ready to go’ for Wales at World Cup after injury concerns

Gareth Bale is “100 per cent fit and ready to go” for Wales at the World Cup in Qatar after battling injury issues.

The former Real Madrid winger’s fitness had been a concern before Robert Page named his 26-man squad for Wales’ first appearance at the World Cup in 64 years.

Bale has only started twice for Los Angeles FC since joining from Madrid in July, managing just 370 minutes on the pitch.

However, he scored an extra-time equaliser as a substitute against Philadelphia Union in the MLS Cup final, which LAFC won on penalties on November 5.

Bale initially gave Wales reason to be concerned after the final as he said he felt “not 100 per cent fit”, but has since backtracked on those comments before travelling to the Middle East.

“I’m 100 per cent fit and ready to go,” the Wales international told Sky Sports after revealing his struggles with a “slight issue”.

Bale suggested playing the United States, England and Iran in Group B in the space of nine days would be “no problem”, with the mental aspects of being sidelined more of a problem than the physical side.

“I’m fully fit and ready to go. If I need to play three 90s, I’ll play three 90s,” he added. “It’s been difficult, mentally more than anything.

“I guess for everybody, the last three or four weeks, it’s been difficult, even hearing stories of players going down and knowing they’re going to miss the World Cup.

“Speaking to a few of the boys, even for them having to play this weekend was tough mentally, and we’re just praying not to have an injury at all because it’s such a big occasion.”

The tournament has been somewhat overshadowed due to human rights issues in Qatar.

Bale will be among eight captains to wear a distinctive heart-adorned armband, raising awareness for the OneLove campaign against discrimination in a country where same-sex marriage is prohibited.

“For us as footballers, it’s been a difficult subject to talk about,” said Bale. “But we can shed a light on the problems there that are going on.

“We’ve spoken to the FAW [Football Association of Wales] and they’ve been speaking to Welsh government, who’ve been speaking to Qatar and FIFA, working on these issues.

“For us as players, we’re fully behind and support everything we can do. As footballers, the most we can do is raise awareness and it’s for people higher up to make those decisions, and hopefully make change for the better.”

  • City and England centre-back Stones backs ‘partner’ Maguire

Manchester City centre-back John Stones believes form and club minutes are irrelevant when it comes to the World Cup, and is backing Manchester United captain Harry Maguire to deliver on the big stage for England.

Stones and Maguire are experienced in leading their country deep into big tournaments, starting alongside each other in both the 2018 World Cup semi-final and the Euro 2020 final.

While Stones, 28, remains in terrific standing back at City, starting almost every game he is healthy for, it has been a different story for 29-year-old Maguire this campaign with United.

After starting the first two games of the Premier League season, a benching followed by a hamstring injury has seen him make only one start since, with Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane overtaking the club captain.

Despite Maguire’s lack of a perfect preparation, Stones said he knows he can still perform at a high level if that is how manager Gareth Southgate chooses to line up.

“Whatever team or whatever system Gareth decides, if it’s me and Harry we will use those bonds again,” he said.

“They are too strong to be broken by game time, form, whatever it is. That kind of goes out the window when these moments hit.

“When I look at Harry, I see a partner. Through all our experiences he’s had my back and I’ve had his.

“We’ve had so many games together, we’ve made a bond and a partnership together. We know what the other person is going to do and how we work best together. It clicks.”

England kick off their campaign on November 21 against Iran, before closing out the group stage with fixtures against the United States and Wales.

  • Ronaldo claims senior Man Utd figures doubted daughter’s ill health after absence

Cristiano Ronaldo alleged some members of Manchester United’s hierarchy did not believe his reasoning for missing pre-season when his daughter was in hospital.

Ronaldo has hit out at United in a wide-ranging interview with Piers Morgan for TalkTV, which will be released in full on Wednesday, criticising manager Erik ten Hag, former boss Ralf Rangnick and the club.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner insisted Alex Ferguson convinced him to re-sign at Old Trafford but suggested “zero progress” has been made since the legendary Scot left in 2013.

United issued a statement saying a response would follow once the interview, in which Ronaldo stated he felt “betrayed” by the club, was released in full.

In a new clip released on Monday, Ronaldo claimed two senior members at United doubted his daughter, Bella, was sick with bronchitis just three months after her twin brother had died.

“I spoke with the director and the president of Man Utd and they kind of didn’t believe that something was going wrong, which made me feel bad,” the Portugal captain said.

The forward missed United’s pre-season tour of Thailand and Australia after being granted additional time off by Ten Hag.

When pressed to confirm senior United figures did not believe he was telling the truth, Ronaldo added: “They believe me but in the same way [shakes head]…

“I am never going to change the health of my family for a football. Now, or 10 years behind or forward.

“And it is something that really hurt me because they doubted my word that I was struggling, especially Bella and Geo [Georgina Rodriguez, Ronaldo’s girlfriend].

“We had one week in hospital because Bella had a big problem and I didn’t go to the pre-season because of that.

“I didn’t want to leave my family to do the pre-season because I didn’t think it was fair to leave my family for a pre-season. This is why I didn’t go.”

Ronaldo stated in an Instagram post on Monday that his full focus is on achieving World Cup glory with Portugal, who face Ghana on November 24 in their Group H opener.

  • Hamilton ‘not concerned’ about racing Verstappen in future despite Sao Paulo collision

Lewis Hamilton is “not concerned” about racing against Max Verstappen in future despite the two clashing in Sunday’s Brazilian Grand Prix.

After a red flag on the opening lap in Sao Paulo, the restart saw the two familiar foes make contact heading into the second corner, forcing both off the track.

The incident dropped Hamilton from second to eighth, while Verstappen required a new front wing.

The world champion was handed a five-second time penalty for his part in the crash, which was reminiscent of a number of battles between the pair in their thrilling title battle last season.

Verstappen blamed his rival after the race, which Hamilton’s team-mate George Russell went on to win while the seven-time world champion followed up in second to earn a Mercedes one-two.

“It cost him the race win and it gave me five seconds,” Verstappen told Sky Sports. “It wouldn’t have mattered anything for my race.

“I thought we could race quite well together but clearly the intention was not there to race.”

Hamilton responded in the post-race press conference, saying: “I am not concerned.

“I think it’s natural when you have the success and the numbers on your chest that you become a bit of a target.

“But it’s okay, it’s nothing that I’ve not dealt with before.”

The clash with Hamilton was not Verstappen’s sole controversy from the race, after he refused to hand sixth place to Red Bull team-mate Sergio Perez, who called Verstappen’s decision “disappointing” with the Mexican battling Charles Leclerc for second place in the drivers’ championship.

  • What it’s like living as a female psychopath

Victoria knew about her boyfriend’s wife, but after a couple of years she suspected that he had other lovers. There was no proof, but his body language was giving him away, she says. His stories weren’t lining up. His face looked different when he lied.

“I happen to have superb memory when it comes to conversations,” she says. “He was not at all a good liar. I’m not sure why his wife never caught him.”

A mental flipboard of ways to punish him flipped in Victoria’s mind until she landed on one. It would take a little time, and she’d have to act like she knew nothing. Over the course of several months, while still seeing him, Victoria sent naked photos of her boyfriend to his wife.

He came to her distressed, asking who could possibly be doing such a thing. His wife was devastated. He confessed to Victoria that he was, indeed, sleeping with other women. He did not suspect her, and she comforted him.

And then, when Victoria got bored and ready to end the relationship, she sent his wife a final gallery of pictures, the last one a photo of herself with the woman’s husband. With that explosive reveal, Victoria exited their life forever.

When Victoria used to tell people this story, her flippancy would alarm people. “People asked me ‘Why would you do this to his wife? What did his wife do to you to deserve this? How did she hurt you?’,” she says. “And I would think, ‘Well, life is unfair’.”

    She pauses.

“I suppose that is a good example of an extreme psychopathic trait I used to have. Callousness.”

Psychopathy is not an official mental health diagnosis and is not listed in the fifth and latest edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. Instead it is grouped under the wider term of antisocial personality disorder, although psychopathy is widely used in global clinical environments. It is broadly understood to be a neuropsychiatric disorder, where a person displays unusually low levels of empathy or remorse, often resulting in antisocial and sometimes criminal behaviour. The term was used by doctors in Europe and the US in the early 1900s and became mainstream by 1941, following publication of the book The Mask of Sanity by American psychiatrist Hervey M Cleckley.

“The world’s leading academics have debated the definition of psychopathy,” says Abigail Marsh, a psychologist and neuroscientist at Georgetown University, in Washington DC. “You’ll get very different explanations of psychopathy depending on whether you are talking to a forensic psychologist or a criminologist.”

Marsh says that criminal psychologists tend to classify people as having psychopathy only when they display violent and extreme behaviour. For her, however, the condition displays itself as a spectrum with other, less dramatic behaviour that can vary from person to person.

Psychologists and psychiatrists generally agree that between one and two in every 100 people in the general population meet the criteria for psychopathy, but Marsh claims that as many as 30% of people in the general population display some degree of psychopathic traits. For those who have psychopathy, it can mean they struggle to maintain close friendships and put themselves in risky situations, but the condition also takes its toll on the people around them too.

“Being around a callous or manipulative person is often devastating for people who are close to them, and exhausting for people living with extreme psychopathy,” says Marsh.

She says that the majority of studies concerning people with psychopathy have been conducted on criminal offenders. Some of these studies point to psychopaths – or those showing psychopathic traits – as making up a disproportionate number of people in prison, although there is some dispute about how prevalent it really is. In general, the research suggests that psychopathy is higher among male offenders (accounting for perhaps 15-25% of prisoners) than female offenders (where it is found in 10-12%).

But it is a field that is still understudied in the general population, while even less research is conducted on women.

Women often exhibited traits like debilitating impulsiveness (such as a lack of planning), thrill-seeking in interpersonal relationships, and verbal aggression

While a number of studies suggest that psychopathy is more prevalent in men than women, Marsh argues this may be due to how the testing was devised in the first instance.

“Initial psychopathy scales were primarily developed and tested on a prison population of men in British Columbia by Bob Hare,” she says.

Canadian psychologist Robert Hare developed the Psychopathy Checklist (now called PCL-R) in the 1970s, and a revised version is often regarded as the global gold standard for testing for psychopathic traits. It is now the most frequently used and validated diagnostic tool for assessing psychopathy. The PCL-R measures the scale of emotional detachment someone might have, such as their willingness to manipulate someone to a desired outcome irrespective of the consequences, and also their antisocial behaviour, such as aggressive or impulsive choices that might be violent or involve abruptly abandoning responsibilities.

“Adaptations of that scale are used today in non-institutionalised samples, including women and children in several countries, but it’s an open question of whether you would have come up with the same items to start with if you were starting with looking at non-criminal women,” says Marsh.

One analysis by researchers in 2005 also contrasted core characteristics of women and men with psychopathy. They suggested that women often exhibited traits like debilitating impulsiveness (such as a lack of planning), thrill-seeking in interpersonal relationships, and verbal aggression. The researchers argued that psychopathy in men meanwhile tends to manifest with physical aggression and violence. At the time they stated, however, that not enough research had been conducted into why this may be the case. Seventeen years later, not much has changed.

Ana Sanz Garcia, a psychology PhD student at the University of Madrid, and her colleagues conducted a more recent analysis in 2021 of published research studies that included over 11,000 adults who were evaluated for psychopathy. She agrees that there need to be more studies that focus on women and non-criminal people with psychopathy. She told the BBC that the studies to date show women with psychopathy show less propensity for violence and crime than men, but more examples of interpersonal manipulation.

“It would be interesting to study the factors that explain why among women high in psychopathy have a lower probability of committing antisocial and criminal acts than males,” says Sanz Garcia. “If these factors are discovered, a programme could be designed to prevent both women and men high in psychopathy from committing those antisocial and criminal acts.”

Again, there has not been enough research to determine why, but one recent study in France points at a potential answer – coldness and lack of emotion appears to play a far more central role in women’s psychopathy than it does with men. Women also exhibit fewer of the violent and antagonistic behaviours seen in male pyschopathy.

Victoria says her own manipulative behaviour began appearing as a way of keeping herself amused.

She was born in Malaysia to a working class family. Her father’s alcoholism and lack of personal accountability for the consequences of his drinking made her home an unhappy one. She thrived academically at school but was often bored. For fun she would enjoy passing on confidential pieces of information people told her, secrets she had sworn to keep. Who hated whom. Who had a crush on whom. Tensions between the children at secondary school could often be traced back to her. Victoria knew how to manipulate others to take responsibility for mistakes she made, or what to say to get out of trouble. She convinced a teacher that she threw a chalk at her due to peer pressure.

“It was what she wanted to hear,” she says. She wanted to believe that the clever child wasn’t a bad child, just an easily led one.” More recently Victoria has been getting help to manage her impulses. But she has also been finding support, perhaps rather strangely, from others like her.

Victoria’s train of thought is interrupted when a thick, orange, swishy cat tail suddenly pops up on the video call and gently tickles her cheek. “His name is Gibberish,” she says, reaching to pet a body that is out of frame on the table.

    Is that his real name?

“He has many names,” she says.

As Gibberish prowls Victoria’s desk, I ask her about several recent videos entitled “the psychopath challenge” that have gone viral on TikTok, amassing more than 20 million views. They discuss how viewers might “spot a psychopath”. The tag “psychopath” is one of the more popular on the social media app, with over two billion views. It’s used to mark several subjects, including footage of people with psychopathy on trial, and is used as a slur for bad behaviour. What’s clear is that people find the subject of psychopathy, and those possessing it, both fascinating and repulsive.

Victoria doesn’t find these videos offensive.

“Part of being a psychopath is not caring what people think so it doesn’t bother me,” she says. “But it does show how little people understand the full spectrum of the condition.”

What she does take exception to are those videos that discuss whether people with psychopathy are more prone to harming animals. “Many of us prefer animals to humans,” she says curtly, looking down at Gibberish, who purrs out of vision.

Laughter is often used by people with psychopathy as an intentionally manipulative device, helping them to control the conversation

The “us” Victoria is referring to is an online community of women like her. It centres mostly around the blog of writer ME Thomas, perhaps one of the most well-known women with psychopathy. Thomas scored over 99% when assessed for psychopathy by John Edens, a forensic psychologist at Texas A&M University.

Thomas’ blog Sociopath World, details what life is like with psychopathy. Thomas  says she used the word sociopath instead of psychopath as she felt it was a term more people would understand. Sociopathy is not a widely accepted clinical term, and psychologists like Marsh say it is sometimes used by individuals who may feel a stigma attached to the word “psychopath”.

A literary agent discovered Thomas’s blog and it led to a book deal. A Life Spent Hiding in Plain Sight, was published in 2012 and translated into more than 10 languages. A film starring actress Lisa Edelstein based on the book is currently in the works.

“I see myself as a formula, not a person,” Thomas says. “It’s like being an Excel spreadsheet where I work out what to do and say by calculating the possible outcome.”

An example might be telling someone she loves them when she wants something from them, says Thomas. It is something she has done a few times, she says, and it has led to the breakdown of several relationships.

One 2012 study at the University of Zurich also found laughter is often used by people with psychopathy as an intentionally manipulative device, helping them to control the conversation, for example. Or at times laughing at, not with, the person they were speaking to.

Thomas says her agent tells her not to use the word “manipulative” when talking about herself, but instead say that she knew how to influence people from childhood. But manipulative is the word she uses. She said that quality helped her become a good lawyer, which is still her profession.

When she talks, people can’t place her accent. They think she may be from Israel or Eastern Europe, although she has lived her entire life in California. “You get accents from being socialised into having an identity. I’ve never got an identity,” she says. “I have a really weak sense of self.”

On her blog, she shares her daily thoughts and interviews other people who live with psychopathic traits. Many of her readers find refuge in her posts and videos, she says, as it’s a place where they recognise their own patterns and share experiences free from judgement.

Looking at psychopathy as a spectrum could mean the traits that define it are far more common in the general population than most studies suggest (Credit: Somsara Rielly/BBC)

Another reader is Alice, a 27-year-old German woman. Alice says that it is frustrating to read articles or watch depictions of people with psychopathy as evil individuals who must all be avoided.

“We exist on a scale like everyone else.”

Like Thomas, Alice is immediately likeable, perhaps because she smiles a lot. She admits early that she is mimicking what she knows is socially appropriate. Alice has done this her whole life. When her grandmother died, she observed her sister’s grief and mirrored her behaviour.

She says she also pretends to be sarcastic as it allows her to get away with saying what’s on her mind without causing alarm. She learned this early at the age of 12 while on holiday on a ship and she wondered out loud what it would be like if they had an accident and to watch people drown. The reaction from her parents and their friends taught her that it was important to frame it like a dark joke, rather than a dark thought.

While Thomas describes her dominant psychopathic trait as manipulation and Victoria says her is callousness, Alice’s points to her own lack of empathy as being her most conspicuous trait.

“I don’t have any emotional empathy, but I have a lot of cognitive empathy,” she says, her smile still in place. “So if someone gets hurt, like hurting their knee or breaking their arm, I may not feel anything for them emotionally but I know I am supposed to get them help so I will.”

But this, she says, makes her a good person to have around in emergencies.

“People tell me their problems and I am not emotionally clouded so it doesn’t affect me, and I can listen to them, give them rational advice,” she says. “Other people may want to distance themselves because it triggers their own emotion, but that doesn’t happen to me.”

Alice is not alone in thinking that her traits could be a benefit to society. The “positive” traits of psychopathy is explored by Kevin Dutton, a psychologist at the University of Oxford, in his book, The Wisdom of Psychopaths: What Saints, Spies and Serial Killers Can Teach Us About Success. In 2011, Dutton ran a survey in the UK titled “The Great British Psychopath Survey”. Boardroom chief executives, journalists, police officers, the military, surgeons and lawyers were the professions where people displayed the most psychopathic traits. Dutton argues that certain personality traits within the psychopathy spectrum – including a coolness under pressure and less empathetic response to interpersonal interactions – can help people to deliver on their work without being, as Alice would call it, “clouded”.

People with disorders and their friends and family aren’t getting the help they need. And that harms everyone – Abigail Marsh

“Everybody knows somebody with psychopathic traits,” says Marsh, who has co-founded a non-profit called Psychopathy Is. It provides one of the few online platforms offering support for both people with psychopathy and those close to them.

Marsh says their aim is to demystify psychopathy and provide screening tools so people can assess themselves with reliable instruments and then get good information on what to do.

“Psychopathy is not a category, it’s a continuum,” she says. “It is distributed amongst the population in varying degrees. Some people cause continuous destruction and some just need their symptoms managed.

“When we don’t discuss it openly, people’s minds go to Ted Bundy and Hannibal Lecter, and then we see TikTok trends filling the void of expert information.”

Many experts, Marsh included, believe it is time to dispel the myths and stigma surrounding psychopathy.

The underlying causes of psychopathy are still poorly understood, although a growing body of neuroimaging research is helping to pinpoint some of the potential neurological abnormalities in the brain that may explain the symptoms.

Research, for example, has indicated that men with psychopathy have a reduced response in regions of the brain related to processing fear and there are some hints that similar effects can be found in women. Some researchers have also pointed to differences in the neural circuitry of the amygdala, a key structure of the brain responsible for processing emotions, but like most research on psychopathy, these findings are far from robust and still need to be studied further.

Genetics and the environment someone finds themselves in are also important components to the puzzle. But to get to those answers will require wider society to develop a more mature relationship with psychopathy, Marsh believes.

“I really admire what the autism research community did in the nineties,” she says. “They decided to get rid of the stigma by telling people the truth about it. That it’s a spectrum disorder. We as researchers in psychopathy need to agree on an approach to really throw ourselves into developing better interventions that can help people with psychopathy live flourishing, productive lives.”

Until this happens, people with psychopathy are being failed, she adds.

“That means people – people with disorders and their friends and family – aren’t getting the help they need. And that harms everyone.”

Victoria, Alice and ME Thomas use meditation, psychological therapy and peer-to-peer support from their online community to help manage their disorder.

“It’s helpful to not be in the shadows,” says Thomas. “But there is still a stigma to the word ‘psychopath’. There’s still a lot of work to do and a lot more open conversations to have. The reality is we exist.”

For a sweet breakfast, enjoy Mascarpone and Berries Toast, which is full of naturally sweet strawberries and blackberries that are packed with antioxidants. Other fiber-rich and anti-inflammatory foods, like raspberries, blueberries, clementines, pears, and apples, offer a sweet fix without the added sugar.

  • Russell lost for words after maiden Formula 1 win

George Russell was lauded by team-mate Lewis Hamilton after winning the Brazilian Grand Prix, with the first-time Formula 1 race winner left “speechless” by his success.

Having won Saturday’s sprint race, Russell led from the start in an eventful race on Sunday, coming out on top after two restarts following safety cars at the Interlagos Circuit.

Russell had to fend off Hamilton – who had earlier clashed with Max Verstappen but come away largely unscathed and unpunished – after the second safety car, but there was no bad blood between the Mercedes duo at the end.

“What an amazing feeling,” said Russell after sealing Mercedes’ first win of the season. “Just a huge thank you to the whole team for making this possible.

“It has been an emotional rollercoaster this season. This was a tough race, I felt in control.

Lewis was super-fast and when I saw the Safety Car, I thought this is going to be a really difficult end, he put me under so much pressure.

“I am speechless. On the in lap, all of these memories start flooding back, starting with my mum and dad at go-karting and going through to all of the support I have had from the rest of my family, my girlfriend, my trainer, my manager.

“The list is endless. I can’t thank them all enough, I am super proud.”

Hamilton said: “A huge congratulations to George. What an amazing drive he did today.

“He did an amazing qualifying yesterday, so he truly deserves it. To my team, so proud of everyone back at the factory and here. This is an incredible result.

“We’ve worked so hard through this year to get a 1-2 and to get a win, and so this is hugely deserved by everybody so a huge thank you.”

On his collision with old rival Verstappen, who received a five-second time penalty, Hamilton added: “What can I say, you know how it is with Max.”

The harmony in the Mercedes camp was not replicated in the other teams.

While Red Bull’s Sergio Perez was left infuriated by Verstappen, who refused to hand sixth place back to the Mexican after failing to overtake Fernando Alonso, Charles Leclerc also wanted Ferrari to concede Carlos Sainz’s place on the podium to boost his chances of finishing second in the world championship.

Leclerc will now head into the final race in Abu Dhabi on level points with Perez.

“I think we can be happy with that,” said Sainz. “It is a shame that Mercedes are so quick but congratulations to George.”

  • #PayToPlay: Stonebwoy accuses GFA of bribery in World Cup team selection

Dancehall artiste, Stonebwoy, has called out the Ghana Football Association (GFA) over the absence of some key players in the squad for the 2022 World Cup tournament.

In a tweet on Monday, following the unveiling of the 26-man squad by Otto Addo, Stonebwoy could not understand why the list did not reveal the some players who could assist Ghana claim this year’s trophy.

He believes this is due to what he describes as “PayToPay” which goes to suggest bribery and corruption-related activities.

Stonebwoy, however, did not reveal the identities of the players he expected to be in the squad heading to Qatar but were not included.

This comes after President Akufo-Addo cautioned the leadership of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to desist from interfering with the Black Stars team selection for the 2022 World Cup tournament in Qatar.

The President issued the warning on Thursday, October 20, 2022, when the GFA paid a courtesy call at the Presidency.

The Black Stars technical team is mandated to select the players fit to represent the country, however, there are rumors of GFA interference.

According to the President, such grapevines must not materialise in Qatar this November.

For Stonebwoy, the GFA did not adhere to the President’s directive.

Andre Dede Ayew will be leading the senior national football team to Qatar.

Goalkeepers: Ibrahim Danlad, Lawrence Ati Zigi and Manaf Nurudeen.

Defenders: Alexander Djiku, Salisu Mohammed, Daniel Amertey, Tariq Lamptey, Gideon Mensah, Baba Rahman, Dennis Odoi, Alidu Seidu and Joseph Aidoo.

Midfielders: Andre Ayew, Thomas Partey, Elisha Owusu, Salid Abdul Samed and Daniel Afriyie Barnie.

Attackers: Daniel Barnieh Afriyie, Kamal Sowah, Issahaku Abdul Fatawu, Osman Bukari, Inaki Williams, Antoine Semenyo, Jordan Ayew and Kamaldeen Sulemana.

Ghana will open camp in Abu Dhabi and will take on Switzerland on November 17 before flying to Doha for the tournament on November 19.

Ghana will open their campaign against Portugal on November 24 at Stadium 974 in Doha.

Four days later, the Black Stars return to action with a clash with South Korea at the Education City Stadium in Al Rayyan.

Ghana will wrap up their group stage adventure with their much-anticipated encounter with Uruguay at Al Janoub Stadium in Al Wakrah.

  • Fernandes says ‘football is for everyone’ ahead of Qatar World Cup

Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes has insisted “football is for everyone” as the domestic game prepares to halt for the upcoming World Cup in Qatar.

A number of the world’s biggest leagues will take a mid-season break for the tournament, which is being played in November and December instead of the usual June and July due to the climate in Qatar.

As well as the timing, there have been a number of concerns raised about the decision to allow Qatar to host the biggest tournament in football, such as human rights issues in the country, including reports of migrant worker deaths during the construction of the stadiums where the World Cup will be played.

The tournament gets underway on November 20, and speaking after United’s late 2-1 win at Fulham in their final Premier League match before then, Fernandes – who will represent Portugal in Qatar – did not hold back on his opinions when speaking to Sky Sports.

“Of course, it’s strange,” he said. “It’s not exactly the time we want to be playing in the World Cup. Obviously I think for everyone, players, fans, it’s not the best time because kids will be at school, people will be working, the timings will not be the best for people to watch the games.

“We know the surroundings of the World Cup what has been in the last few weeks, the last few months, about the people that have died at the construction of the stadiums.

“We are not happy for that at all. We want football to be for everyone, everyone has to be included and involved in the World Cup because it’s ‘world’, it is for everyone.

“These kind of things I think should not happen at any time, but a World Cup is more than football; it is a party for fans, players, and something that is pure joy to watch, and should be done in a better way.”

Erik ten Hag’s men secured an injury-time win at Craven Cottage on Sunday through teenager Alejandro Garnacho, after Christian Eriksen gave the Red Devils a first-half lead with his maiden goal for the club.

The Denmark international will also be going to Qatar, and simply said: “It’s football, no matter where it is. That’s why were are going to the World Cup, because we qualified and we’re just going to play football.”

  • Man Utd issue statement after scathing Ronaldo interview

Manchester United have issued a statement following Cristiano Ronaldo’s seismic interview, where he expressed he felt “betrayed” by the club.

In a 90-minute interview conducted by Piers Morgan, due to be released fully on Wednesday, Ronaldo issued scathing criticism upon the club, Erik ten Hag and former caretaker boss Ralf Rangnick.

The 37-year-old declared he had “no respect” for Ten Hag and had “never heard of” his predecessor Rangnick, while claiming no progress had been made by the club since Alex Ferguson’s departure in 2013.

Ronaldo’s comments come ahead of the World Cup in Qatar, with United not in Premier League action again until Boxing Day, and they will take their time to decide the appropriate action.

The statement read: “Manchester United notes the media coverage regarding an interview by Cristiano Ronaldo.

“The club will consider its response after the full facts have been established.

“Our focus remains on preparing for the second half of the season and continuing the momentum, belief and togetherness being built among the players, manager, staff, and fans.”

Ronaldo has made 16 appearances across all competitions for United this season, 10 of which have been as a starter, scoring three goals and registering two assists.

However, he has netted just once in the Premier League this season, coming off the bench against Everton on October 9 to score the winner in a 2-1 victory.

  • ATP Finals: US Open runner-up Ruud shows class against Auger-Aliassime

Casper Ruud opened his ATP Finals campaign with a 7-6 (7-4) 6-4 triumph over Felix Auger-Aliassime in Turin.

The victory put Ruud top of the Green Group, with the pool’s two other players, Rafael Nadal and Taylor Fritz, set to face off later on Sunday.

A tight first set saw each game go to serve as it went all the way to a tie-break, with Ruud – this year’s beaten US Open finalist – finding a crucial break at 3-2 up, giving him the momentum to nose ahead.

They continued to be closely matched in the second set too, though Ruud again managed to break Auger-Aliassime at a critical juncture in the match.

With the set tied at three apiece, ATP Finals debutant Auger-Aliassime double-faulted at 40-15 down on his own serve to put Ruud within two games of victory.

The world number four took full advantage, who is making his second appearance in the season-ending tournament, kicking on to secure a straight-sets success without offering a single break point to begin his tournament in impressive fashion.

  • ATP Finals: Fritz stuns Nadal in Turin opener

Taylor Fritz stunned Rafael Nadal on his ATP Finals debut on Sunday, producing a powerful display to beat the 22-time grand slam winner 7-6 (7-3) 6-1 in the duo’s group-stage opener.

The American put Nadal under pressure from the off in Turin, failing to give up a single break point as he dominated on his own serve to take the 36-year-old to a tie-break in the opening set.

Nadal allowed Fritz to seize the initiative with a double fault at the start of that tie-break, and the American grasped his opportunity by clinching the first set with a big forehand winner.

The top seed’s struggles continued into the second set as Fritz, moving well and dictating proceedings from the baseline, claimed the match’s first break four games in before going 5-1 up by repeating the trick in a back-and-forth sixth game.

Fritz then wrapped up the win with another dominant display of serving, clinching his second victory over Nadal and denting the Spaniard’s bid to win a title that has eluded him throughout his illustrious career.

Having been beaten by Tommy Paul at the Paris Masters and Frances Tiafoe at the US Open, Nadal has now suffered three consecutive defeats, and he must bounce back when he faces Felix Auger-Aliassime on Tuesday.

    ACES/DOUBLE FAULTS

    Nadal – 7/4

  • Mayweather easily defeats YouTube star Deji in boxing exhibition

Floyd Mayweather collected a routine victory in his exhibition boxing match against YouTube star Deji Olatunji on Sunday.

Mayweather, who is considered one of the greatest boxers to ever live, was never threatened, slowly building his pace in the eight-round fight.

He finished the job in the sixth round with an extended flurry, allowing the referee to step in and call it off for a TKO victory.

It is Mayweather’s third exhibition since May as he continues to accept fights from non-professional boxers, having last fought professionally against Conor McGregor back in 2017, while his last win against a boxer was in 2015.

Speaking in the ring to DAZN after the result, Mayweather pointed to some swelling under his own eye as an indication that the crowd got their money’s worth.

“I’m glad that he landed a good shot, this is part of fighting, this is a part of entertainment,” he said. “These people want to see entertainment, and fun, and that’s what we both gave them tonight.”

He finished with some encouraging words to his opponent, saying “you’re a hell of a fighter, a hell of a competitor, keep up the great work, and keep building”.

  • Maldini confident Milan can fight Napoli for Scudetto

AC Milan technical director Paolo Maldini is still confident his side can mount a challenge for the Serie A title after cutting Napoli’s lead at the summit.

A last-gasp own goal from Nikola Milenkovic handed Milan a 2-1 victory against Fiorentina at San Siro on Sunday in the final game before the World Cup, reducing Napoli’s advantage to eight points.

While that tally is still significant, victory against La Viola was a crucial one as a draw would have seen the deficit in double figures.

With 11 consecutive wins, dethroning an in-form Napoli side when the season resumes in January is a stern test but Maldini feels the race is far from over.

“Absolutely, we believe in it. Last year in the derby we were seven points from Inter, then we won,” he told DAZN.

“It is not easy to keep this pace until the end, we have to grow. Maybe at this moment we are a little empty of energy.

“The standings speak for themselves; we have two points fewer than last year. Napoli have done incredible things.

“We are in line with last year. For the rest, nothing can be said. We are through in the Champions League with players still to recover.

“We must keep the spirit and enthusiasm that made us win last year.”

Maldini also continued to back Charles De Ketelaere, who is yet to impress with Milan after his arrival from Club Brugge.

“He’s suffering. It’s a different environment with different pressures and demands. It is the difficulty of having so many emotions,” he added.

“We have a five-year contract with Charles, not five months. We are waiting for it. Judgements must be partial. Time will tell if he can fit in well.”

  • Van Dijk insists Liverpool ‘never doubted Nunez quality’ after brace

Virgil van Dijk says Liverpool “never doubted” the quality of Darwin Nunez following the striker’s recent upturn in fortunes.

Nunez endured a frustrating start to life at Anfield following his big-money move from Benfica, receiving a straight card against Crystal Palace in just his third appearance under Jurgen Klopp.

However, the Uruguay international is starting to hit his stride in English football; his two goals in Saturday’s 3-1 win over Southampton taking his tally for the season to nine.

“We never doubted his quality but obviously, when you have a price tag like that and the goals are not flowing like you want, it’s good [he has shown character] and I think he’s done very well,” Van Dijk said.

“He has all the qualities for a modern-day striker. There is a reason why we bought him, and he’s maturing, he’s stayed patient, kept his head down and played and that’s a credit to him. Hopefully, he can keep scoring and stay important for the group.

“Obviously, he learns how we want to play, he learns what we expect from him, he plays a little bit on the left, but also has a free role coming into the middle.

“It takes time. It is a new team, new environment, new country, new language, so it is absolutely normal for him to take a little bit more time [to settle in], but there is no doubt the qualities are there, and the goals will follow.”

Van Dijk also heaped praise on goalkeeper Alisson, who made a string of impressive saves to keep Southampton at bay during the victory at Anfield.

The Netherlands skipper additionally highlighted Roberto Firmino’s character, with the forward opening the scoring against the Saints after being left out of Brazil’s World Cup squad.

“[Alisson is] important for the group on and off the pitch,” Van Dijk added. “We don’t want him to have to make saves, first and foremost. He had to do so [against Southampton] and he was outstanding.

“Brazil are a very good team, they have two of their best goalkeepers in their squad and in my opinion, the best goalie in the world is Alisson.

“I think Bobby [Firmino] should be in, but who am I to say that? He took it on the chin, all you can do is recover and be ready for the rest of the season and I think he will do that.”

  • BVB chief says Bellingham sale inevitable if big clubs come calling

Jude Bellingham can leave Borussia Dortmund if Europe’s big names come calling as the German club cannot “afford to fight financially”, says their CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke.

Bellingham’s strong start to the season has seen him register 12 goal involvements in all competitions, earning him a place in England’s World Cup and garnering interest from a number of top clubs.

Liverpool, Real Madrid and Manchester City are all rumoured to be interested in the midfielder, who signed for Dortmund from Birmingham City as a 17-year-old in 2020 for an initial fee of £25million.

If Bellingham does leave, Dortmund reportedly want a fee of €100m, though that number could end up reaching €150m should a bidding war play out for his services.

While Bellingham is yet to publicly state any desire to leave Dortmund, Watzke knows will be difficult to keep hold of him if that changes and the top teams come calling.

“We will hold talks now, as soon as [the World Cup in] Qatar is over,” Watzke told Bild. “Then we’ll have a fundamental talk about what he would like.

“He just needs to tell us if he’d like to stay or if he’d like to go. In both cases we’ll talk about it very pleasantly and reasonably together.

“In general we can imagine that he’d stay with us, but we can’t behave as if this topic wasn’t on the table.

“If he says ‘I’d like to do something else,’ then the really big [clubs] in Europe will be there and we can’t afford to fight financially.”

  • Kimpembe out of France squad as Deschamps calls up Disasi and Thuram

Presnel Kimpembe has been replaced in France’s World Cup squad by the uncapped Axel Disasi, despite returning from injury for Paris Saint-Germain at the weekend.

After sitting out the wins over Juventus and Lorient, PSG defender Kimpembe played the final 15 minutes of Sunday’s 5-0 Ligue 1 triumph over Auxerre.

Kimpembe, who has represented France 28 times, said after the match he “is feeling fine” and was looking forward to linking up with his country for Qatar 2022.

However, the French Football Federation announced on Monday the defender “does not consider himself sufficiently recovered” to be able to represent the reigning world champions.

Didier Deschamps has added centre-back Disasi, who has made 23 appearances for Monaco this season, to his 26-man squad as Kimpembe’s replacement.

Borussia Monchengladbach forward Marcus Thuram has also been called up after scoring 13 times and assisting four more in 17 appearances this season.

The France squad are due to meet at their Clairefontaine training base on Monday ahead of their Group D opener against Australia on November 22.

Les Blues, who are attempting to become the third team to win back-to-back World Cups, then take on Denmark and Tunisia.

Ghana will wrap up their group stage adventure with their much-anticipated encounter with Uruguay at Al Janoub Stadium in Al Wakrah.

  • Ronaldo claims Rooney criticism rooted in jealousy

Cristiano Ronaldo has suggested Wayne Rooney’s criticism of his behaviour at Manchester United is rooted in jealousy.

Ronaldo has been the subject of a great deal of scrutiny this season, having pushed for a move away from United ahead of the August kick-off.

After staying at Old Trafford, the United great fell out of favour under new manager Erik ten Hag and was widely criticised for refusing to appear as a substitute against Tottenham.

Ronaldo stormed down the tunnel during that match and was subsequently suspended for United’s next game.

Ten Hag has reintegrated Ronaldo, but his role remains the subject of debate, with former strike partner Rooney weighing in this week.

While some of Ronaldo’s other team-mates have defended him, Rooney said the 37-year-old’s behaviour was “not acceptable” and an “unwanted distraction”.

Now, in a wide-ranging interview with Piers Morgan Uncensored, Ronaldo has responded.

“I don’t know why he criticises me so badly,” he said in an interview that will be broadcast in full next week.

“Probably because he finished his career and I’m still playing at a high level.

“I’m not going to say that I’m looking better than him – which is true…”

Ronaldo joined United for the first time in 2003, a year before Rooney was signed from Everton, and the pair won the 2007-08 Champions League together.

While Ronaldo will be heading to the World Cup with Portugal, Rooney – England’s record goalscorer – is preparing for his first full season in charge of MLS side D.C. United.

As well as poking fun at Rooney, Ronaldo used his interview as a platform to discuss how he has been “betrayed” by United, adding he does not respect Ten Hag.

  • “I am not aware of any appearance fee” – Bawumia dismisses corruption tag in Anas’ exposé

Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has distanced himself from corruption allegations levelled against him by investigative journalist, Anas Aremeyaw Anas of Tiger Eye in his yet to be released exposé.

On Monday, the journalist in a Facebook post accused Charles Adu Boahen, then Minister for State at the Finance Ministry of corruption in his interactions with investors.

Anas Aremayaw Anas alleged that the former Minister requested an amount of USD200,000 from investors under cover to be given to the Vice President.

“Charles Adu Boahen, Minister of State in charge of Finance at the Office of the President, has revealed to Tiger Eye that the Vice President, Dr Mahamadu Bawumia, needs just USD200,000 token as an appearance fee and some positions by an investor for the Vice President’s siblings to get his backing and influence in establishing a business in Ghana.

“This revelation was made in a meeting with Tiger Eye investigators, who in an undercover investigation, posed as businessmen, in a hotel room in the United Arab Emirates. This was an investigation into top-level corruption that undermines investor confidence in Ghana.

“According to Charles Adu Boahen, the Vice President needs an appearance fee of only USD 200,000 for him to avail himself and offer his support to an investor,” parts of his post read.

Reacting to this, the Vice President has noted that he is “not aware of any such meeting held by Minister Adu Boahen or a supposed “appearance fee”.

According to Dr Bawumia, his most cherished asset in life is his integrity, thus, “I will not allow anyone to use my name to engage in corrupt activities.”

He also noted that Mr Charles Adu Boahen must be dismissed should he be found culpable of the allegations levelled against him.

“I would like to state that if what the minister is alleged to have said is accurately captured in the video, then his position as a minister of state is untenable. He should be dismissed summarily and investigated,” he wrote.

Briefly after the Vice President’s comments, the Presidency in a press statement sighted by The Independent Ghana, has announced that the appointment of Mr Charles Adu Boahen has been terminated.

President Akufo-Addo only dismissed the Minister after reaching out to him on the matter, the statement noted.

Meanwhile, the Presidency has revealed that it would “refer the matter to the Special Prosecutor for further investigations.”

The exposé dubbed “Galamsey Economy” by Anas Aremeyaw Anas will be premiered today at 8PM at the Accra International Conference Centre.

  • Akufo-Addo sacks Charles Adu Boahen over corruption allegation

President Akufo-Addo has sacked the Minister of State at the Finance Ministry, Charles Adu Boahen.

The Presidency in a statement dated November 14, signed by Director of Communications, Eugene Arhin, revealed that Mr Boahen’s appointment has been terminated due to his alleged involvement in galamsey, which has been brought to light in excerpts of Anas Aremeyaw Anas’ yet to be released exposé dubbed “Galamsey Economy.”

President Akufo-Addo only dismissed the Minister after reaching out to him on the matter.

Meanwhile, the Presidency has noted that it would “refer the matter to the Special Prosecutor for further investigations.”

On the other hand, the President has thanked Mr Charles Adu Boahen for his service to the government since his appointment in 2017.

On Monday, the investigative journalist, Anas Aremeyaw Anas, took to Facebook to share some insights of his exposé to be released today at 8PM at the Accra International Conference Centre.

In a post captioned “Our Minister & The Cash”, he accused Charles Adu Boahen of being corrupt in his engagement with investors.

This revelation was made in a meeting with Tiger Eye investigators, who in an undercover investigation, posed as businessmen, in a hotel room in the United Arab Emirates. This was an investigation into top-level corruption that undermines investor confidence in Ghana.

According to Charles Adu Boahen, the Vice President needs an appearance fee of only USD 200,000 for him to avail himself and offer his support to an investor,” parts of the detailed article read.

Meanwhile, Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has distanced himself from corruption allegations levelled against him.

In a Facebook post on Monday, he wrote “My attention has been drawn to a video by Anas Aremeyaw Anas (as posted on his social media handle) showing the Minister of State for Finance, Mr. Charles Adu Boahen, apparently using my name, inter alia, to peddle influence and collect money from supposed investors. I would like to state that if what the minister is alleged to have said is accurately captured in the video, then his position as a minister of state is untenable. He should be dismissed summarily and investigated.”

“I am not aware of any such meeting held by Minister Adu Boahen or a supposed “appearance fee”. My most cherished asset in life is my integrity and I will not allow anyone to use my name to engage in corrupt activities,” the Vice-President added.

  • “I don’t have respect for Ten Hag” – Ronaldo feels ‘betrayed’ by United

Cristiano Ronaldo says he feels “betrayed” by senior figures at Manchester United and has no respect for the club’s head coach Erik ten Hag after enduring a tumultuous season at Old Trafford.

Having top-scored for United with 24 goals in all competitions last term, Ronaldo reportedly asked to leave the club following their failure to qualify for the Champions League, and the 37-year-old has fallen out of favour since Ten Hag took charge ahead of this campaign.

Ronaldo was temporarily exiled from first-team activities last month after refusing to come on as a substitute in a 2-0 win over Tottenham, and has only scored one Premier League goal all season.

Before travelling to Qatar to represent Portugal at his fifth and likely final World Cup, Ronaldo stated his belief that senior figures at Old Trafford – including Ten Hag – want rid of him.

Asked whether he felt he was being forced out of Old Trafford, Ronaldo told Piers Morgan uncensored: “Yes, not only by the coach, but by another two or three guys around the club that I felt betrayed me.

“I shouldn’t say that [they were trying to get rid of me], I don’t know, but yes, I feel betrayed. I felt that some people didn’t want me here not only this year, but last year too.”

Ten Hag has preferred to hand opportunities to the likes of Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Anthony Elanga in United’s attack this season, and has only started Ronaldo in four league games.

Last month, Ten Hag said he opted against bringing Ronaldo on in a 6-3 defeat to rivals Manchester City “out of respect”, while the Portugal forward was visibly irritated by the Dutchman’s decision to substitute him against Newcastle United two weeks later.

Asked about his relationship with Ten Hag, Ronaldo added: “I don’t have respect for him because he doesn’t show respect for me.

“If you don’t have respect for me, I’m never going to have respect for you.”

  • Finau shares lead with three others after Houston Open first round

Tony Finau is one of four players with a share of the lead after finishing Thursday’s opening round of the Houston Open with a five-under 65.

Finau is joined by fellow Americans Aaron Wise and Tyson Alexander, as well as Sweden’s Alex Noren, although Alexander still has one hole to play as the late-starters had their rounds cut short when darkness halted the action.

Ranked 15th in the world, Finau caught fire on his second nine, posting five birdies from his final eight holes to fly up the leaderboard.

Canadian duo Taylor Pendrith and Mackenzie Hughes headline the logjam tied for fifth at four under, with England’s Justin Rose part of the 10-player group one further back at three under.

It was a rough day out for the big names in the field, with world number two Scottie Scheffler and former Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama shooting even-par 70s to finish the round tied for 53rd.

That pairing at least remain in the hunt, which is more than can be said for last week’s winner of the World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba, with Russell Henley struggling on his way to two over.

Another former Masters champion had a tough time, with Danny Willett unlikely to make the cut after his five-over 75, while world number 12 and recent Presidents Cup debutant Sam Burns had a day to forget, shooting seven over.

  • ‘Embarrassing’ race ban threat an ‘unpleasant situation’ for Gasly

Pierre Gasly says the “embarrassing” threat of a looming race ban is “a very unpleasant situation” as he prepares for this weekend’s Sao Paulo Grand Prix.

The AlphaTauri driver, who will move to Alpine next year, has amassed 10 penalty points so far this term, leaving him two shy of the threshold to automatically trigger a one-race suspension.

If he reaches a dozen at Interlagos, he will miss the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix next weekend, while his remaining points remain valid for a year, meaning he could still be banned next season – with Brazil the first of nine races where the threat of a ban looms over him.

Gasly feels the sanctions have been tough on him however, and says he is in dialogue with the FIA to seek clarification on rulings in order to avoid incurring any time spent off-track.

“I’m not going to lie, it’s a very unpleasant situation and quite delicate,” he stated. “In some ways, [it is] a bit embarrassing to be standing in a position where I could be banned for a race after the season that I’ve [had].

“I don’t really feel like I’ve been particularly dangerous over these last 12 months and that would definitely be a harsh penalty.

“I’ve been discussing it quite a lot with the FIA to try and find solutions because the way the regulation is written at the moment, it’s quite strict on the drivers, even though it’s not always related to dangerous driving.”

“I hope we can find solutions out of the weekend to avoid ending up in a silly situation where I’ll be banned for a race. That would be terrible for myself and definitely not the way. I don’t think that’s the correct approach.”

Gasly’s penalty points have mostly been amassed through collisions this term, including with Lance Stroll in Spain and Sebastian Vettel in Austria.

He was also handed points for exceeding red flag limits during a controversial Japanese Grand Prix.

  • Draper beats Musetti to reach ATP Next Gen Finals last four

Jack Draper comfortably defeated home favourite Lorenzo Musetti 4-1 4-0 4-3 (7-3) in Milan to reach the semi-finals of the ATP Next Gen Finals.

Draper only dropped one game in romping to a two-set lead, and though the world number 23 put up more of a fight in the third, his British opponent secured victory and his place in the final four with his second match point.

Brandon Nakashima awaits Draper in the next round, after the American made it three from three by beating Francesco Passaro in straight sets.

A tight opener saw Nakashima find three crucial breaks of serve to take the tie-break, but Passaro could not keep up the pressure and the world number 49 took over to clinch a 4-3 (7-4) 4-2 4-1 triumph.

Matteo Arnaldi joined his countrymen Musetti and Passaro in crashing out at the group-stage, though Jiri Lehecka needed two tie-breaks to see him off 4-3 (7-5) 4-1 4-3 (7-4).

Lehecka and Arnaldi combined to save 11 of 12 break points outside of tie-breaks, but Lehecka’s strong second set helped him set up a semi-final encounter with Dominic Stricker.

Stricker reached the final four by cruising past Chun Hsin Tseng 4-2 4-1 4-2 to secure his third straight win at the competition.

The Swiss 20-year-old remained undefeated with 25 winners to Tseng’s 11 while he out-aced his Taiwanese opponent six to zero.

  • Conte says he must earn new contract but calls on Spurs to match his ambitions

Antonio Conte wants to earn the right to sign a new contract with Tottenham, but has hinted the club must match his ambitions to keep him for the long term.

Conte’s current deal with Spurs expires at the end of the season, and although the club have an option for a one-year extension, the Italian has been linked with an exit on several occasions.

A return to Juventus has been touted as a possibility for Conte at various stages this campaign, but the Tottenham boss wants to show he deserves an extended stay in north London – so long as Spurs can help him achieve his own aims.

“My contract expires on June 30. Until that moment, the club has to make the best evaluation,” Conte said at a pre-match news conference ahead of Tottenham’s meeting with Leeds United on Saturday.

“I think that everything needs to be deserved. For this reason, it’s important to see the rest of the season, what happens, if we are happy with the improvement we are doing.

“On my side, professionally, I have to feel that I deserve to sign a new contract with this club. I have to feel this, but for sure I will talk with the club and we will find the best solution.

“When you start a path with a club, your dream is to stay here many years, to try to build something important.

“I think it’s very important, the relationship that you create with your players, the relationship you create with the club, the environment around you, and also don’t forget the ambition.

“If you’re used to fighting to win, it is also very important to match this situation and then, if you are lucky and find all of these situations, it’s simpler to stay for a long-term project.

“When this happens, you are a lucky person, a lucky man. Every manager dreams of this situation. Then the reality, unfortunately, is not always this.”

Tottenham have lost three of their past four Premier League games, which is as many as they had lost in their previous 24 (W17 D4), with Conte’s side appearing stretched amid an injury crisis.

Attacking stars Son Heung-min, Richarlison and Dejan Kulusevski have all been absent in recent weeks, and Conte believes Tottenham may need to add numbers when the January transfer window opens.

“For sure, after the first part of the season it will be right to have a meeting with the club, to discuss the positive and negative things, where we can improve,” Conte said.

“Then we will see what we can do. It always depends on the possibilities, and the ambition from the club.

“But for sure, we’ll speak, also to have a good evaluation of this part of the season. I have seen a lot of positive things, but with injuries and having to play every three days, I think we struggled a lot.

“In the future, we have to try to improve, to be better to face this type of situation.”

Tottenham have won seven of their past nine Premier League games against Leeds (D1 L1), having lost eight of their previous nine against them in the top flight (D1).

  • Netherlands boss Van Gaal opens up on squad calls

Netherlands boss Louis van Gaal said he saw several of his players “naked” when he called them to inform them of his World Cup squad selections.

The Oranje have named their 26-man party for Qatar 2022, with a string of surprise selections and omissions in Friday’s announcement.

Uncapped trio Xavi Simons, Jeremie Frimpong and Andries Noppert have been included, but there is no place for Bayern Munich’s Ryan Gravenberch or Newcastle United’s Sven Botman.

Speaking on the calls to inform prospective squad members ahead of the announcement, Van Gaal reflected on the difficulty of his selections, while revealing he caught several players unawares.

“It was really tough,” he said at a press conference. “I even took the time difference into account for the people in England. I saw naked players, because they were still in bed!

“I’ve said a hundred times I think this group is fantastic. But this is about the vision of the national coach. I discovered that this morning when I told a player he would not attend a World Cup. It is not easy.”

Other major names missing from the Netherlands’ first World Cup squad for eight years – they famously missed Russia 2018 – include Villarreal’s Arnaut Danjuma and NEC goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen.

Having missed their return to tournament football at Euro 2020 through injury, Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk will skipper the side, where he will wear the OneLove armband in support of LGBTQ+ rights.

FIFA has already warned against such political action in Qatar, but Van Gaal says he is not interested in the governing body’s stance, instead preferring his captain’s opinion.

“I think it’s not important what FIFA thinks,” he added. “It’s about what our association thinks, how the national manager thinks about but mostly what Virgil van Dijk thinks.

“I can say something about the situation, that doesn’t make a difference. [Liverpool manager Jurgen] Klopp said it the right way, and I totally back him on his opinion.

“We are going to play there, and we won’t often think about the fact that things aren’t done the right way. There are so many things that are not okay, even in our country.”

  • Arteta keen for Arsenal transfer additions to keep momentum

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has hailed the performance from his squad in the first half of the season and opened the door for new recruits in the January window.

The Gunners head into Saturday’s clash with Wolves, the final game before the World Cup, top of the Premier League and a tally of 34 points at this stage of the season has only once not resulted in title triumph at the end of the campaign (Newcastle United 1996-97).

Arteta’s side have already exceeded early expectations this season, with a top-four challenge being the objective, but a lack of depth within the squad could be problematic as the season progresses.

Arsenal have been linked with major moves when the market reopens, with reports suggesting a bid in excess of £50million has been made for Shakhtar Donetsk’s Mykhalo Mudryk, while interest in Orlando City’s Facundo Torres and Palmeiras’ Danilo is also rumoured.

While Arteta did not delve into specifics, he confirmed activity in the market is on the agenda.

“Some of the players and the experience they have is not the biggest, but we have competed in an impressive way up to now with the numbers we have,” he said on Friday.

“Of course, we can improve the team, we will always be looking to do that as a club. This window is unpredictable, especially with the World Cup in the middle. We will have a look and will try to make the squad stronger.

“We will be active because you don’t know what will happen in the World Cup, touch wood, everyone will be ok.”

Arsenal have not been afraid to splash the cash under Arteta and [technical director] Edu, having forked out a reported £80m to sign Aaron Ramsdale and Ben White, and the Gunners boss was asked whether the inclusion of the pair in England’s World Cup squad proves they made the right decision.

“We pick the players that we believe have the qualities and personalities to be helpful and successful at our club,” he added.

“If they are valuable to the national team as well, in this case England, then it is much better.”

The Gunners have a number of players set to compete at the World Cup, including Gabriel Martinelli, Gabriel Jesus, Bukayo Saka and Takehiro Tomiyasu, with Arteta predicting glory for one of his squad.

“One of my players will win the World Cup, I hope so,” said the Spaniard.

  • Ronaldo involvement against Fulham ‘possible’ despite illness

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is unsure of Cristiano Ronaldo’s availability against Fulham after the forward was struck down by illness this week.

United travel to Craven Cottage in the Premier League on Sunday for their final game before the season halts for the World Cup in Qatar, with questions lingering as to whether players will avoid being involved across the final weekend in order to avoid picking up an injury.

Ten Hag insists that is not the case for United and, though Ronaldo has been under the weather in recent days, it is “possible” he could be involved.

“I think the players are all aware of the importance of the game. We have Fulham, and I will not take the World Cup into regard. We play the best team on Sunday – it’s the only interest for Manchester United,” Ten Hag told reporters.

“I can’t guarantee that now [Ronaldo being available], but he was ill today, so he can recover from that, it’s not a really serious illness that takes days or weeks. So I think it’s possible that he will be available for Sunday and that he will be in the squad.”

Ten Hag was also asked how he would assess the current position of United and outlined his content, though he remains focused on this weekend’s game with Fulham.

“I hoped that we would be where we are now, but again, it’s better to ask me the question after Sunday. Sunday is going to be a really important game,” he added.

“If you look into the progress of the process, then you can analyse and you can make a reflection. I think we have progressed.

“Pressing play out from the back, also attacking the final third, that is part of the game we have to improve, but then you have to have numbers available. When we have so many games, you need rotation. Otherwise, you don’t keep the players fresh.

“We need the players who are available at the highest level. So we need new players or to use the players that we have already got.”

One of those within the squad who has had limited involvement is Donny van de Beek, but Ten Hag feels there is still a role for the midfielder to play, with a temporary departure not appealing to him.

“I don’t think that a loan makes sense. It’s either he fights himself, and he proves himself in this atmosphere in this environment, or he goes, but for me, there’s still a way for him,” he explained.

“There’s still chances for him, but it is not going to be easy because the competition there is really strong.”

  • Dybala named in Argentina World Cup squad as Messi leads La Albiceleste to Qatar

Paulo Dybala has overcome injury to take his place in the Argentina squad for the 2022 World Cup.

The Roma forward has not played since the Giallorossi’s win against Lecce on October 9 after suffering a thigh problem, though reports had suggested he was close to a return.

That appears to be the case as Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni has named Dybala in his 26-man squad for Qatar, a list headlined by Lionel Messi in what is expected to be his final World Cup.

The 35-year-old has rediscovered his form at Paris Saint-Germain, scoring 12 goals in 18 games this season, and he will be joined in attack by the only Albiceleste player to equal him for goals in qualifying (seven), Lautaro Martinez, as well as Dybala, Angel Di Maria, Joaquin Correa, Julian Alvarez and Nicolas Gonzalez.

Like Dybala, Tottenham centre-back Cristian Romero has recovered from injury in time to make it, with Manchester United’s Lisandro Martinez also on the plane.

However, Villarreal midfielder Giovani Los Celso has failed to make the cut after recently sustaining a hamstring injury.

Impressive 21-year-old midfielder Enzo Fernandez earns his place in the squad after a good start to life at Benfica, while Brighton and Hove Albion’s Alexis Mac Allister has also been rewarded for his form in the Premier League.

The two-time World Cup winners begin their campaign on November 22 against Saudi Arabia, before facing Mexico and Poland in their other Group C games.

    Argentina squad:

Franco Armani (River Plate), Emiliano Martinez (Aston Villa), Geronimo Rulli (Villarreal); Marcos Acuna (Sevilla), Juan Foyth (Villarreal), Lisandro Martinez (Manchester United), Nahuel Molina (Atletico Madrid), Gonzalo Montiel (Sevilla), Nicolas Otamendi (Benfica), German Pezzella (Real Betis), Cristian Romero (Tottenham), Nicolas Tagliafico (Lyon); Rodrigo De Paul (Atletico Madrid), Enzo Fernandez (Benfica), Alejandro Gomez (Sevilla), Alexis Mac Allister (Brighton and Hove Albion), Exequiel Palacios (Bayer Leverkusen), Leandro Paredes (Juventus), Guido Rodriguez (Real Betis); Julian Alvarez (Manchester City), Joaquin Correa (Inter), Angel Di Maria (Juventus), Paulo Dybala (Roma), Nicolas Gonzalez (Fiorentina), Lautaro Martinez (Inter), Lionel Messi (Paris Saint-Germain).

  • T20 World Cup: Stormy final forecast could see trophy shared

The T20 World Cup could be shared between Pakistan and England if weather forecasts are to be believed.

The final of the tournament is scheduled to take place at the MCG on Sunday after Pakistan beat New Zealand and England overcame India in the semi-finals.

However, according to the Bureau of Meteorology in Australia, there is a 95 per cent chance of rain in Melbourne on Sunday, with predicted rainfall of up to 25mm and chances of thunderstorms.

Should no play be possible on Sunday, the final could take place on Monday, though that forecast is not much better with rain again deemed likely.

At least 10 overs per team are required to complete a final – up from five overs in the group stage – the failure of which would see the strange occurrence of Pakistan and England being crowned joint champions.

In what has been an otherwise exciting tournament, it would be the fourth match lost to rain at the iconic MCG, which saw three matches washed out by the weather in the group stage, including England’s clash with hosts Australia.

  • Potter backs James and Chilwell to recover from World Cup disappointment

Chelsea boss Graham Potter believes Reece James and Ben Chilwell will react well to the disappointment of missing out on England’s squad for the World Cup in Qatar.

James sustained a knee injury in a Champions League game against Milan last month, and an estimated eight-week timescale for his recovery immediately threw his World Cup hopes into doubt.

The right-back initially vowed to do everything in his power to feature, but Gareth Southgate said there were simply “too many unknowns” concerning James’ recovery as he left him out of the Three Lions’ 26-man squad.

Fellow Blues full-back Chilwell will also miss the tournament after suffering a hamstring injury, and while Potter says the duo are understandably down, he believes they will bounce back.

“It’s a natural reaction, they’re disappointed. Reece thought he would be close and did everything he could to give himself a chance, but in the end, he fell a little bit short,” Potter said on Friday.

“Obviously, I can understand the decision and understand Reece’s frustration and disappointment. We just have to focus on the rehab on try to get them back as soon as we can.

“It’s normal, World Cups don’t come around very often and to miss them is disappointing, but they’re strong characters. They’ll be fine.”

After Saturday’s trip to Newcastle United, Chelsea are not in action until they face Bournemouth in the Premier League on December 27 – having been eliminated from the EFL Cup in midweek – and Potter hopes to use that break to nurse his injured stars back to fitness.

“If you’re going to look at the positives, it’s a time to do the rehab as thoroughly as possible without a timescale hanging over them,” Potter said. “Hopefully, we have them when we restart and they’re fit, strong and well.

“I wouldn’t say I’m really looking forward to it, but we have to use it as what it is, and it’s an opportunity to take stock.

“It’s been incredibly intense, we’ve learned a lot. It’s a chance to reflect. It would be stupid of me not to use that time to rejuvenate, to recover and to improve.”

Midfielder Conor Gallagher was included in England’s squad after making 17 appearances for Chelsea this season, and Potter believes he deserves it after breaking into the Blues’ first team.

Asked if Gallagher’s selection was a surprise, Potter said: “It’s not something I really gave too much thought, to be honest; it’s just nice for us and great for Conor. He’s going to have a really positive experience, I think.

“He’s worked really hard, and he’s a fantastic person, so it’s nice. It’s a fantastic honour for him, everyone is really pleased.

“It’s a nice story, he’s been out on loan and come through the club, so to get the chance to play at the World Cup is great news for him.”

  • Rooney backs Kane to smash England record at World Cup

England’s all-time leading goalscorer Wayne Rooney hopes Harry Kane smashes his record during the World Cup.

Kane heads to the tournament with 51 goals for the Three Lions, two behind Rooney’s record hail, with the pair standing as the only England players to have hit the half-century mark.

Having scored six times in Russia four years ago to win the Golden Boot, Kane will be confident of surpassing Rooney’s tally in Qatar.

While others may wish to hold onto such a record, Rooney is fully behind Kane taking a record that is “there to be broken”.

“I’m delighted for him, I think he’ll go on and smash the record, I think he’ll end up on 70-odd goals,” Ronney told TalkSPORT.

“He deserves it for the work he puts in. It’s a huge honour to have the record but the record is there to be broken and I couldn’t think of anyone better to take that record.

“Hopefully, he gets it during this World Cup because it will mean he’s doing well for England.”

Kane was one of the sure-fire picks for Gareth Southgate’s 26-man squad, which was named on Thursday, though the England manager’s selection of Harry Maguire has come under some criticism.

Rooney, who took up a coaching role with D.C. United in MLS earlier this year, believes Southgate has made the right choice in picking the Manchester United centre-back, though he questioned the exclusion of Milan’s Fikayo Tomori.

“Harry has been great in the last two tournaments. When I was in the squad, Gareth reiterated to me that he is picking players on form and I wasn’t playing, so I didn’t get picked, but he seems to have gone away from that now,” he added.

“There’s a couple of players within the squad who haven’t been playing but I think Harry is a very good professional, he’ll start the games, I have no doubt, and I’m sure he won’t let England down.

“The squad is probably as strong as it could be, if I’m being honest. The only one really is Tomori, from my point of view. He was the one who was pushing to be in the squad, and he will be disappointed that he is not. Everything else is really what I expected.

“With Maguire not playing as much as he wants, I think Southgate might go for the protection with three centre-backs and that is obviously why he’s gone with Eric Dier ahead of Tomori, because he fits into the back three.

“I hope we go for four [at the back] and get an extra attacker on the pitch but I think he might go for the back three.”

England kick-off their group stage campaign against Iran on November 21, then tackle the United States and Wales in Group B.

  • Messi returns to training ahead of World Cup

Lionel Messi returned to training ahead of Paris Saint-Germain’s final Ligue 1 fixture before the World Cup, as Christophe Galtier insisted he will not rest players against Auxerre on Sunday.

Messi missed PSG’s 2-1 win at Lorient as a precautionary measure after suffering from inflammation in his Achilles tendon last week, though Galtier maintained the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner was likely to return before the tournament in Qatar.

Just 11 days before Argentina begin their Group C campaign against Saudi Arabia, Messi has handed the Albiceleste a boost by joining France’s Presnel Kimpembe in returning to PSG training.

While Galtier reiterated his desire to treat the concerns of his players seriously ahead of the World Cup, he is not planning to use Sunday’s match as an opportunity to make changes.

“All the players are available except Fabian Ruiz,” Galtier said on Friday. “No player came to tell me that he did not want to play or that he was afraid of making this last match.

“My door is always open. They know they can come and talk all the time. I wouldn’t be surprised if a player came to see me and told me that he was apprehensive about the last game.

“I have an obligation to put up a very competitive team against Auxerre. If there is strong restraint, I will be attentive to the comments of my players.”

Senegal and Bayern Munich attacker Sadio Mane became the latest big name to suffer an injury scare on the eve of the tournament this week, but Galtier is confident in his medical team’s ability to manage players’ fitness levels.

“When I see an injured player like Sadio Mane, I’m always sad for him,” Galtier added. “The relationship is very direct between my medical staff and the medical staff of the national teams.

“All the doctors of the teams are informed of the state of our players. Our selected players will be operational for Sunday’s match. The most important thing is to train well.

“These players who are going to the World Cup are very high-level athletes and competitors. There may be this fear, but it is more around the environment of the players than from themselves.”

  • Mane part of Senegal’s World Cup squad despite doubts over fibula injury

Sadio Mane has been named in Senegal’s squad for the World Cup despite suffering a fibula injury less than two weeks before the tournament begins.

The Bayern Munich attacker limped out of his side’s 6-1 Bundesliga thrashing of Werder Bremen on Tuesday, and the Bavarian giants subsequently confirmed he had injured his right fibula head.

Reports in Germany and France said Mane’s availability for Senegal’s World Cup campaign – which begins against the Netherlands on November 21 – was in question, but Bayern did not rule him out of the tournament.

Senegal coach Aliou Cisse has opted to take a risk on Mane by naming him in his 26-man party for the trip to Qatar, though he acknowledges the former Liverpool star’s condition must improve if he is to feature.

“We are monitoring the situation and have sent one of our doctors to assess him,” Cisse said at a press conference in Dakar on Friday.

“On Thursday, Sadio spent the whole day in Munich before travelling to Austria for further tests. The good news is that he does not need an operation.

“We want the situation to evolve in two to three weeks. I don’t want to rule him out.”

Mane scored the winning penalty as Senegal beat Egypt to win their first Africa Cup of Nations title earlier this year, and he has been directly involved in 12 of the last 25 goals scored by Senegal players at major tournaments (AFCON and World Cup), netting nine and assisting three.

Chelsea defender Kalidou Koulibaly will captain the Lions of Teranga in Qatar, with Blues team-mate Edouard Mendy also set to start in goal.

Senegal squad: Seny Dieng (Queens Park Rangers), Alfred Gomis (Rennes), Edouard Mendy (Chelsea); Fode Ballo-Toure (Milan), Pape Abou Cisse (Olympiacos), Abdou Diallo (RB Leipzig), Ismail Jakobs (Monaco), Kalidou Koulibaly (Chelsea), Formose Mendy (Amiens), Youssouf Sabaly (Real Betis); Pathe Ciss (Rayo Vallecano), Krepin Diatta (Monaco), Idrissa Gueye (Everton), Pape Gueye (Marseille), Cheikhou Kouyate (Nottingham Forest), Mamadou Loum (Reading), Nampalys Mendy (Leicester City), Moustapha Name (Pafos), Pape Matar Sarr (Tottenham); Boulaye Dia (Salernitana), Famara Diedhiou (Alanyaspor), Bamba Dieng (Marseille), Nicolas Jackson (Villarreal), Sadio Mane (Bayern Munich), Iliman Ndiaye (Sheffield United), Ismaila Sarr (Watford).

  • Allegri grateful for late dismissal as Juventus grab 1-0 win

Massimiliano Allegri was grateful after Alex Sandro’s cynical red card helped Juventus to a 1-0 win over bottom-placed Hellas Verona on Thursday.

Moise Kean’s strike with half an hour to play looked to be enough for Juventus to make it five victories and five clean sheets in a row but in injury time, a Thomas Henry throughball put Kevin Lasagna in on goal.

However, Sandro barged Lasagna over before the Verona forward reached the box and though the full-back was sent off, the resulting free-kick was skied over and Juve saw the game out to secure the three points.

Allegri was delighted after the match with his side’s dogged performance and Sandro’s unselfish decision to take Lasagna down, telling Sky Sport: “Alex Sandro’s red card is worth a goal.

“He should not be fined but given a prize.

“It certainly wasn’t a great match on a technical level. In some situations we could have done better but it is an important sign for the team. We came through a tiring period and with players out, and luckily the changes helped us.”

Allegri also spoke of his joy for Kean, who has now scored in three straight starts in all competitions after failing to hit the target in his previous seven, saying: “If he played many games, he would score many goals.

“For me he is very important and I’m happy. It took a while to get out of the way to find space, he [Kean] and [Arkadiusz] Milik did it better in the second half.”

Angel Di Maria continued his return from injury with a cameo and though he failed to make much of an impact, Allegri was understanding with the former Real Madrid man expected to be in Argentina’s World Cup squad.

“On a technical level, he did well. Angel managed the ball,” Allegri added.

“It’s normal, there’s a World Cup in a few days and you unconsciously leave something on the pitch. It’s not wanted, but that’s the way it is.”

  • Kwasi Okyere Wriedt hopeful of making final 26-man squad for World Cup

Holstein Kiel striker, Kwasi Okyere Wriedt says he wants to be a part of Ghana’s final 26-man squad for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

The German-born footballer was part of the team that defeated Nigeria in the final qualifying round to secure Ghana’s place in Qatar.

Wriedt has been named in Ghana’s 55-man provisional squad with the final squad set to be released on Monday, November 14.

The former Bayern Munich youngster is now hoping to be included in the final squad, which is expected to be released in the coming days.

“Yes, of course. So, I think it’s a childhood dream that’s coming true,” he told ndr.de.

“Well, that I was now personally in the playoffs, that I was able to be part of the fact that we qualified for the World Cup,” he said.

In 13 games this season, the 28-year-old has scored three goals and provided one assist in the German second-tier league.

Ghana’s World Cup campaign begins on November 24 against Portugal. They will also face South Korea and Uruguay in Group H.

  • Ten Hag claims Argentina inclusion not ‘right step’ for Garnacho

Erik ten Hag says Alejandro Garnacho’s potential inclusion in Argentina’s Qatar 2022 World Cup squad would not be “the right step” for the Manchester United teenager.

La Albiceleste are set to announce their 26-man party for this month’s tournament next Monday, where the reigning Copa America champions are considered among the frontrunners.

With Lionel Messi set to likely compete in his final World Cup, Lionel Scaloni’s side will not be short of motivation, and there have been suggestions Garnacho could be a surprise name in the squad.

But Ten Hag is not sure it would be the best thing for the winger’s development.

“It’s difficult to say,” he stated. “I don’t know all the available Argentina players, what is available for them from 26. It’s a big step to go to a World Cup, where the best players in the world come together.

“It’s a big step. I don’t know if that’s the right step for him. I think he has to keep his head clean, stay calm, work hard and develop. I think [he has to] go from game to game.”

Garnacho was a live-wire performer for United as they progressed to the last 16 of the EFL Cup on Thursday with a 4-2 win over Aston Villa, providing two assists after coming off the bench.

The teenager has lacked regular minutes this term, though he has been a frequent performer in Europe, with four Europa League appearances and a goal to his name.

  • Ten Hag proud of United’s resilience in Carabao Cup thriller

Erik ten Hag was proud of Manchester United’s resilience after the Red Devils twice came from behind to seal a frantic 4-2 win over Aston Villa in the Carabao Cup on Thursday.

United were heading for a second consecutive third-round exit from the competition when Ollie Watkins opened the scoring at Old Trafford, and again when Diogo Dalot put through his own net after Anthony Martial equalised.

However, Marcus Rashford got United back on level terms before goals from Bruno Fernandes and Scott McTominay took the game away from Villa, helping the Red Devils into the fourth round.

Ten Hag hit out at an “unacceptable” performance when United fell to a 3-1 Premier League defeat to Villa on Sunday, but he was thrilled by Thursday’s comeback against the same opponents.

“Two halves are never the same, it’s true. First half, we controlled the game by good pressing, we won a lot of balls in the opponents’ half, but then did the wrong things,” he told Sky Sports shortly before United were drawn with Burnley in the fourth round.

“At half-time, we said, ‘keep the pressing but be more direct, pass the ball behind their defence’. Then we came back, we fought back.

“I’m really proud of the team that they could do that after Sunday’s defeat.

“I’m really happy with that resilience, that’s what we need to show every game, that’s why I was so disappointed – so mad – with the performance on Sunday.

“We didn’t fight, we didn’t cooperate, we were sloppy – especially in the defensive discipline, and a United player always has to show 100 per cent discipline.”

United travel to Fulham for their final Premier League game before the World Cup on Sunday, and Ten Hag says the extended break will allow for a better analysis of his team’s progress.

“Now we have a little more time, we can go a bit deeper, and we will see where we can improve. We will have a good reflection, definitely,” Ten Hag added.

“It’s a quick game, an intense game, and what we have to do better is to play football at a high intensity, that’s what the top teams do.

“I think we have made a step in the right direction, but on the ball, we can be more in control. There’s still a long way to go.”

Meanwhile, Rashford hit the net for the eighth time this season on the day he was named in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the World Cup, and the 25-year-old believes focusing on United has benefited him.

“For me, the focus is United. If you’re performing for United then England is always going to be around the corner,” Rashford said.

“I’m obviously really pleased to be back in the mix and back with the squad, and it’s going to be a massive month so I’m looking forward to that, but hopefully we can close this chapter off with a win on Sunday.”

  • Israelis, Palestinians to fly together to Qatar for 2022 FIFA World Cup

FIFA has finalized plans that will enable Israelis and Palestinians to attend matches at the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, which gets underway on 20 November.

This follows a meeting with representatives from FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 LLC (Q22), the operational arm for tournament delivery, and from Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Culture and Sport conducted by Qatar’s commitment to FIFA’s hosting requirements.

Direct charter flights will be temporarily operated between Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv and Hamad International Airport in Doha by an airline with existing landing rights in Qatar for the duration of the FIFA World Cup, subject to Israel’s security requirements and operational capabilities. More details will be announced in due course. Visitors will need a registered Hayya (the fan ID required for entry into Qatar during the tournament) and a valid flight ticket to travel to and from Qatar.

Consular services for Israeli citizens will be provided in coordination with the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs through a designated privately-operated international travel company based in Doha. Palestinians will have access to consular services at the Palestinian embassy in Doha.

Commenting on the announcement, FIFA President Gianni Infantino said: “We are delighted that an agreement has been reached for Israeli and Palestinian fans to visit Qatar and attend matches during the FIFA World Cup. With this deal, Israelis and Palestinians will be able to fly together and enjoy football together. I would like to thank our Israeli, Palestinian and Qatari counterparts for helping to make this happen. Football has the power to bring people together, it transcends all boundaries, crosses all borders, and fosters unity like nothing else. The World Cup is the ultimate symbol of football’s unifying power, and today’s historic announcement provides a platform to improve relations across the Middle East”.

A spokesperson for Q22 said: “Since winning the rights to host the FIFA World Cup 2022, we have always said that all ticket holders will be able to attend matches in Qatar. The announcement today illustrates our commitment to respecting FIFA’s policies and hosting requirements including the right of everyone to attend matches. This also includes the requirement that Palestinian ticket holders and media can travel on these chartered flights with no restrictions as they have an equal right to enjoy the tournament, which is made extra special by it being the first World Cup to be hosted in the Arab and Muslim world. The FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 is on course to leave a positive legacy on Qatar, the Middle East, and the Arab world, and with 2.9 million of the three million tickets now sold, we look forward to welcoming fans from around the globe.”

Director General of the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Alon Ushpiz, said: “Today’s announcement will allow Israeli citizens to freely travel to Qatar and attend matches at the World Cup. We have successfully secured all guarantees, including access to consular services for Israelis during their stay in Qatar. As the first World Cup ever hosted in the Middle East, it promises to be a celebration of football and an opportunity for Israelis to build connections and share cultural experiences with people from across our region and the wider world.”

  • Madrid invited ‘unnecessary suffering’ against Cadiz – Ancelotti

Carlo Ancelotti has lamented Real Madrid’s late showing for inviting “unnecessary suffering” in what should have been a more comfortable victory over Cadiz.

Madrid will head into November’s World Cup break trailing LaLiga leaders Barcelona by two points after overcoming Cadiz 2-1 on Thursday.

Eder Militao’s second goal in as many games and a thunderous Toni Kroos volley seemingly had Madrid cruising to victory, before Lucas Perez’s 81st-minute strike ensured a nervy ending at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Ancelotti acknowledged there were a lot of positives to take from Madrid’s first victory in three league games, though the Blancos coach was frustrated to see his side concede late on.

“Yes, we played very well until 2-1. We were able to score 3-0 with [Luka] Modric, who had an easy chance,” the Italian told DAZN.

“Then it’s normal. It was unnecessary suffering. Three deserved points and we finished well [before the World Cup].”

Modric, who will aim for World Cup glory with Croatia in Qatar, missed a gilt-edged chance at 2-0 up as he fired wide of an open goal following Vinicius Junior’s offload.

The failure in front of goal did not come back to haunt Madrid, allowing Ancelotti to joke about the miss, saying: “I’ve told him Croatia have already given him the call-up, so he won’t have a problem.”

Cadiz attempted to ruffle Madrid feathers by imposing their physical presence, leading to six yellow cards being shown in an ill-tempered clash.

Vinicius voiced his displeasure in the first half after team-mate Rodrygo and centre-back Fali clashed off the ball, with Ancelotti stunned by the lack of retrospective VAR action.

“Yes, they told me that [Fali] punched [Rodrygo]. I saw a video and it seemed like an attack to me,” Ancelotti said of the altercation where Fali appeared to elbow the Madrid attacker.

The Cadiz defender suggested he may have let the heat of the moment get to him, too.

“In the end it’s true that I did hit him. He says it’s an elbow and I say no,” Fali said. “I try to stop him and try to grab him. The VAR sees it and gives me a yellow card.

“In this action maybe, I went a little too far. It is not to hurt him. The still image seems to be more than it is. I try to grab his head. He says that I elbowed him, and tell him I did not.”

Madrid will not be in action until a trip to Real Valladolid on December 31 after the break for the World Cup.

  • I wanted to try something new – Mohammed Kudus on Everton move

Ghana international, Mohammed Kudus, has revealed why he sought to leave Ajax for Everton during the summer transfer.

The 21-year-old after an impressive performance during pre-season struggled for game time beginning of the season.

The former FC Nordsjaelland forward was reported to be unhappy about the situation and tried to force a move away from the club.

Premier League side, Everton emerged as the favorite club to sign Kudus but the deal fell through.

However, Kudus has become one of the best players for the Dutch side and has scored 9 goals in 19 appearances for the side.

Speaking in an interview, Kudus revealed that he wanted to try something new hence his decision to leave the club in the summer.

“Of course, things changed after that,” he told Dutch publication Algemeen Dagblad via Sport Witness when asked about wanting to leave in the summer.

“Especially that I started playing more. I believe that if – and we never know for sure – I had been given that chance, things could also have gone well or better.

“That’s how I felt at the time. I wanted to try something new. That’s normal in football. We all want to play. And if you don’t play, you have to look further to be able to do that.

“I am a player who likes to challenge himself. This is my third season here. We’ll see what the future brings. The most important thing is that I just keep performing for the team and the rest will follow naturally later,” he added.

Meanwhile, Kudus is expected to make Ghana’s final squad for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

  • 2022 World Cup: Suarez and Cavani part of squad to represent Uruguay

Veteran strikers Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani will have their fourth consecutive World Cup, headlining Uruguay’s squad announcement on Thursday.

Cavani, 35, was considered in doubt due to a recurring ankle injury, which has seen him complete a full 90 minutes just once this LaLiga season for Valencia.

Following that 90-minute performance, he was withdrawn just 18 minutes into Valencia’s following game against Barcelona on October 29, and is yet to return.

Suarez, who is also 35, played in both September friendlies, contributing an assist in a 2-0 win against fellow World Cup qualifiers Canada to indicate he is still at the required level, despite playing his club football for Nacional in the Uruguayan First Division.

While the seasoned strike partnership will provide experience, Uruguay’s squad also has a strong mix of younger emerging talent, headlined by 24-year-old Real Madrid star Federico Valverde.

Cavani and Valverde lead an impressive group joining the squad from LaLiga, which includes centre-backs Ronald Araujo from Barcelona and Atletico Madrid’s Jose Gimenez.

Liverpool’s Darwin Nunez, Tottenham’s Rodrigo Bentancur and Manchester United’s Facundo Pellistri are the squad’s only Premier League representatives, while Napoli’s Mathias Olivera, Roma’s Matias Vina and Lazio’s Matias Vecino represent Serie A.

Uruguay begin their campaign on November 24 against South Korea, before facing Portugal on November 28 and wrapping up Group H against Ghana on December 2.

  • FIFA rejects Denmark’s ‘human rights for all’ World Cup training shirts

FIFA has rejected the Danish Football Association (DBU) request to train with shirts emblazoned with the phrase “human rights for all” at the World Cup.

Denmark revealed in September toned down Hummel kits for their World Cup jerseys, including a third black kit, as a protest to Qatar’s human rights record.

According to DBU, FIFA’s decision is “regrettable”.

The DBU have been proactive in their criticism of Qatar’s treatment of foreign workers and restrictive social laws, minimizing commercial activities in the nation while stating last year that training kit sponsors would make way for messages.

DBU chief executive Jakob Jensen revealed on Thursday that FIFA had turned down their training shirts submission.

“We have today got a message from FIFA that the training shirts our players were to train in, where it would say ‘human rights for all’ at the stomach [of the shirt], have been rejected due to technical reasons, which is regrettable,” Jensen told Ritzau news agency.

“We believe the message “human rights for all” is universal and not a political call, but something everyone can support.”

FIFA’s rules stipulate that any team equipment cannot have political, religious or personal slogans, statements or images, while the organization wrote to teams recently to urge them to focus on football in Qatar rather than ideological or political issues.

Players from Australia, who are in Denmark’s group along with France and Tunisia, recently released a video criticizing the human rights record of Qatar, specifically migrant workers and LGBTQ+ people.
