  • Charlton beat Exeter to end winless run

Charlton halted an eight-game winless run in League One in emphatic style as they defeated Exeter 4-2 at The Valley.

The Addicks took the lead in the 20th minute, Miles Leaburn latching on to George Dobson’s ball over the top of the Exeter defence and slamming a right-footed shot past Jamal Blackman from inside the area.

Just four minutes later the home team extended their lead. Jayden Stockley got some contact on Scott Fraser’s cross but it needed a hefty deflection off Exeter defender Alex Hartridge to wrong-foot Blackman.

The visitors cut the deficit with a superb finish from Jay Stansfield. The Fulham loanee thrashed a 20-yard half-volley home in the 37th minute.

Jack Sparkes nearly produced another blockbuster for Exeter but his 74th-minute thunderbolt crashed down off the bar.

Chuks Aneke had only been on the pitch for two minutes when he netted after Dobson’s shot was only partially blocked.

Fellow substitute Jack Payne produced a bullet header from Corey Blackett-Taylor’s cross to make it 4-1 to Charlton. City striker Sam Nombe slotted in from the spot after being barged over by Aneke in the fifth minute of added time.

  • Nathan Broadhead on target as Wigan get back to winning ways against Blackburn

Nathan Broadhead’s 62nd-minute goal was enough to give Wigan Athletic their first home victory of the Sky Bet Championship season against north-west neighbours Blackburn Rovers.

Wigan had come into the game on the back of defeats against Hull and Cardiff, but always looked the more likely side to edge a tight encounter at the DW Stadium.

The home fans were in good voice from the off, which gave their side impetus to attack Blackburn, who in contrast started very slowly.

A Max Power free-kick from the right was met by the head of Tom Naylor at the near post, but the ball was always wide of goal.

Lovely footwork from Broadhead saw the on-loan Everton man advance into the box with time and space to shoot. However, his effort was well saved by Thomas Kaminski at the expense of a corner.

Naylor then shot just wide of goal before Will Keane fired straight at Kaminski despite having support from Broadhead and Charlie Wyke.

At the other end, Rovers were struggling to get anything going. A shot from Ben Brereton-Diaz, which flew wide of the far post, was their only real sight of the Wigan goal.

Blackburn’s unease was shown at the break, when Callum Brittain and Tyrhys Dolan were readied to replace Sammie Szmodics and Ryan Hedges.

They were soon joined on the field by Sam Gallagher, for George Hirst, within seven minutes of the restart.

And it was no surprise when Wigan took the lead, thanks largely to a mistake in the Rovers defence.

Scott Wharton gift-wrapped possession in his own box to Keane, whose initial shot was saved by Kamiski at point-blank range. The ball fell to Broadhead, who stabbed home from six yards to the delight of most inside the stadium.

That was his last involvement, with Thelo Aasgaard replacing him at the three-quarter mark.

And Aasgaard was quickly into the game, heading over a cross from Tendayi Darikwa, who then fired wide after good work from Power and Jason Kerr.

Rovers were still struggling to get going, with Brereton-Diaz finding himself unmarked at the back post, only to fire wide of the target.

Bradley Dack was sent on for the final eight minutes, with Ashley Fletcher and Josh Magennis giving Wigan fresh legs up top.

The result means a continuation of Rovers’ remarkable sequence of results which has now seen them win seven and lose seven of their 14 matches.

  • Chelsea climb to Group E summit after Tomori red

Chelsea claimed their first Champions League win in Italy for 19 years by defeating 10-man Milan 2-0 at San Siro to move to the top of Group E.

A 4-0 victory over Lazio in November 2003 had represented the Blues’ last win on Italian soil in Europe’s elite club competition, but this was similarly routine following a contentious Fikayo Tomori red card.

Jorginho’s penalty gave the visitors a 21st-minute lead after former Chelsea defender Tomori was dismissed for fouling Mason Mount in the box.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang then doubled the lead before half-time, with that enough to send Graham Potter’s side to the pool summit following Salzburg’s 1-1 draw with Dinamo Zagreb.

Milan were reduced to 10 men in the 18th minute when Tomori was controversially shown a straight red after tangling with Mount in the box when the Chelsea man was through on goal. Jorginho then calmly sent Ciprian Tatarusanu the wrong way from the penalty spot.

Olivier Giroud, another former Chelsea player, squandered a glorious opportunity to equalise for Milan in the 27th minute, heading Brahim Diaz’s inviting cross wide from eight yards out.

And the Rossoneri were to rue their wastefulness as Chelsea doubled their lead seven minutes later. As he had in a 3-0 win at Stamford Bridge six days earlier, Aubameyang netted the second with a clinical finish from Mount’s neat lay-off.

Substitute Conor Gallagher went close to adding a third within four minutes of the restart but could only find the side-netting, while Aubameyang drew smart reflexes from Tatarusanu.

As Sergino Dest fired over at the other end and the Rossoneri fell to a fifth home defeat in six Champions League games against English opposition, the only dampener for Chelsea was an injury to England right-back Reece James.

What does it mean? Chelsea continue resurgence under Potter

Chelsea remain unbeaten in five matches under Potter, with four successive wins including clean sheets in each of the last three.

Milan, who themselves could have moved to the top of the standings, will be glad to see the back of the Blues, against whom they are without a win in six meetings after suffering consecutive defeats in this fixture for the first time.

    Silva the centurion

Thiago Silva produced a typically assured performance at the heart of the Chelsea defence, with a game-high six clearances helping earn a clean sheet against his former club, where he spent three seasons.

The veteran centre-half also on Tuesday became the fifth Brazilian to make 100 Champions League appearances after Roberto Carlos (120), Dani Alves (111), Fernandinho (103) and Marcelo (102).

    Nightmare reunion for Tomori

Tomori endured another day to forget against Chelsea, having been criticised for his role in a one-sided result at Stamford Bridge last week.

Worse was to come as Tomori got caught the wrong side of Mount, even if the Chelsea man stayed on his feet and got a shot away. The decision provoked debate and left Tomori’s team-mates playing catch-up.

    What’s next?

Both sides are on their travels when they return to league action this weekend. Chelsea aim to build on their momentum in the Premier League when they travel to Aston Villa, while Milan head to Verona in Serie A.

  • Kelty Hearts win in League One while Bonnyrigg Rose end League Two losing run

Michael Tidser scored the only goal of the game as Kelty Hearts beat Queen of the South to claim their third win in cinch League One.

Tidser fired home from the edge of the box in the 34th minute while the visitors were denied an equaliser late on when Ewan Bange headed just wide.

In League Two, Bonnyrigg Rose ended a four-match losing streak as goals from George Hunter and Kieran Mitchell earned a 2-0 win over Annan.

Hunter headed home a 24th-minute opener then turned provider as he played in Mitchell for his first goal for the club just past the hour mark.

Elgin City grabbed a third straight League Two win as Jake Dolzanski’s 75th-minute effort was enough to see off Albion Rovers 1-0.

  • Celtic’s hopes of Champions League progression end with RB Leipzig defeat

Celtic’s hopes of Champions League progression ended on Tuesday night after RB Leipzig hit two late goals at Parkhead.

Former Chelsea forward Timo Werner headed the opener in the 75th minute and Emil Forsberg sealed a 2-0 away win nine minutes later.

The defeat leaves Celtic bottom of Group F with one point from four matches and with no chance of making second place following Shakhtar Donetsk’s draw against Real Madrid in Warsaw.

The Scottish champions can still finish third but would need to beat Shakhtar and then get a result in the Bernabeu – and they would need to develop a far more clinical edge to do so.

They again had the better of the first-half chances but hit the frame of the goal twice and missed several good headed opportunities before the visitors stepped up their attacking threat.

Celtic were missing the injured Jota and lost another winger, Liel Abada, to injury three minutes before half-time.

The theme of their European campaign continued inside 60 seconds when Daizen Maeda spurned a glorious opportunity as he stooped to head Abada’s cross wide from four yards.

Leipzig soon took the sting out of the game though with long spells of possession and Dominik Szoboszlai returned David Raum’s deep cross beyond the opposite post from a good opening.

Celtic needed good blocks from Matt O’Riley – who was again playing in a deep midfield role – and Moritz Jenz after being troubled on the break.

The hosts came to life after the midway point of the half. Greg Taylor and Sead Haksabanovic caused some panic with balls in from the left and Jenz then headed over the latter’s corner.

Leipzig had a major let-off when O’Riley hit the post from 25 yards following a short corner and Taylor scuffed the rebound off the crossbar before Maeda headed wide.

Kyogo Furuhashi then missed an excellent chance when he sent a free header over the crossbar from 12 yards following a pinpoint cross from Haksabanovic.

Abada went off for James Forrest after sustaining what looked like a knee injury following a fair tackle from Raum.

Leipzig finished the half well. Raum hit the bar with a cross, Joe Hart denied Christopher Nkunku with his foot and Willi Orban sent a free header over from the resulting corner.

Hart pulled off a better stop from Orban early in the second half and Furuhashi failed to make the most of good set-up play from Forrest at the other end.

Celtic were living dangerously. Jenz and Cameron Carter-Vickers put in some important interventions and O’Riley tracked back to make an excellent sliding tackle – and they also got some fortune when Szoboszlai slipped in the penalty box after Reo Hatate lost the ball to leave his defence outnumbered.

Leipzig were enjoying the better of the second-half chances. Right-back Mohamed Simakan and Nkunku missed the target from decent chances before Hart saved from the latter.

Celtic made a triple change midway through the half with David Turnbull, Aaron Mooy and Giorgos Giakoumakis coming on and they soon had a chance when the Australian cut the ball back for Maeda. The Japan attacker was having a frustrating night with the ball though and steered a first-time effort wide.

The breakthrough came at the other end after Leipzig worked the ball down their left. Andre Silva got to the bye-line and cut it back for Werner to head home.

Celtic threatened an equaliser but O’Riley saw a strike palmed away and Giakoumakis headed Forrest’s cross wide from close range.

They were made to pay for the latest miss when Werner this time got down the left channel to cut back for Forsberg to find the top corner.

  • Aziz Behich effort enough as Dundee United edge Hibernian at Tannadice

Dundee United registered their second successive cinch Premiership win in a pulsating game with Hibernian at Tannadice.

Aziz Behich scored the only goal of the game in the first half with the victory lifting the Tangerines off the bottom of the table on goal difference.

Hibs were left to rue missing a whole host of chances with the defeat ending their four-game winning run.

Dundee United had a great opportunity in just the eighth minute when Dylan Levitt found Glenn Middleton on the left of the Hibs box but his shot hit the side netting when he really should have tested goalkeeper David Marshall.

However, the home fans did not have long to wait for the opener, which arrived in the 11th minute.

Behich played a one-two with Levitt before skipping past Chris Cadden and producing a fine angled finish with the outside of his boot past Marshall – the Australia wing-back’s second goal in successive games.

Hibs capitalised on a mistake by home skipper Ryan Edwards but Mykola Kukharevych failed to take full advantage, hitting a low shot straight at United goalkeeper Carljohann Eriksson, who easily gathered.

The away side thought they had equalised in the 34th minute after Kukharevych reacted quickest to a mis-hit acrobatic Elie Youan shot to put the ball into the back of the net but the goal was chalked off.

The Tangerines hit straight back with a fine flowing move that ended with Middleton firing over the crossbar under severe pressure from Hibs defenders.

Hibernian half-time substitute Harry McKirdy embarked on a blistering run down the left and somehow kept the ball in play but his angled shot went straight to Eriksson.

The visitors were presented with another gilt-edged opportunity in the 55th minute when Kukharevych pounced on a slack pass from Craig Sibbald to find himself one-on-one with Eriksson but the keeper kept his nerve to divert the striker’s dinked shot just wide.

Martin Boyle was next to have a chance but he blazed the ball well over when he should have at least hit the target.

McKirdy was looking dangerous and he burst down the right before hitting a fierce drive that Eriksson turned away for a corner at his near post.

With nine minutes remaining, Eriksson produced another stunning stop to acrobatically tip over a spectacular overhead shot from the edge of his box by Kukharevych.

Hibs received a boost when the fourth official indicated there would be six minutes of added-on time but United held on to take all three points.

  • Reece James injury blow mars Chelsea’s Champions League win over AC Milan

Reece James handed England a World Cup injury scare as Chelsea went top of Champions League Group E with a 2-0 win over 10-man AC Milan.

James cut a dejected figure when trudging off midway through the second half with an apparent leg problem, adding to both Chelsea and England’s injury concerns.

Jorginho’s penalty and a fine Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang finish sealed Chelsea’s fourth win in a row in all competitions under Graham Potter.

Former Blues defender Fikayo Tomori endured a night to forget at the San Siro with an 18th-minute red card that put his old club in the driving seat.

England arguably boast the most strength at right-back in world football, but manager Gareth Southgate’s options for Qatar are appearing more limited by the day.

Manchester City’s Kyle Walker is rated only 50-50 to make the World Cup that starts on November 20 after groin surgery.

Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold has an ankle problem, and now James has added to those worries.

Newcastle’s Kieran Trippier would seem the national side’s only fit established right-back at this moment, though club and country will hope for good news on James.

Tomori revealed his latent fury from Milan’s 3-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge in the build-up to this rematch.

If the 24-year-old came into the contest grinding his teeth, he left the San Siro pitch prematurely with steam coming out of his ears.

Tomori raged at referee Daniel Siebert, fourth official Daniel Schlager and a host of innocent bystanders too, refusing to leave the pitch after being sent off.

The Canada-born centre-back impeded Mason Mount in the area and suffered the full consequences.

As the last man Tomori could ultimately have few complaints, even if elements of the foul seemed soft.

Jorginho shut out the deafening cat-calls and ignored lasers shined into his eyes to convert the spot-kick after Tomori had eventually, and reluctantly, exited stage vexed.

The sending-off naturally changed the game, handing the Blues extra time and space, especially in attack.

Ex-Chelsea man Olivier Giroud nodded over when unmarked in the area, but beyond that Milan struggled for a first-half foothold.

And then Aubameyang stroked home first-time from Mount’s pass to double the visitors’ lead for a stylish goal.

Conor Gallagher replaced Mount at half-time and quickly dragged a shot just wide as the Blues looked to maintain control.

Chelsea eased off the gas given their situational and territorial dominance, with Milan struggling to make any impact on proceedings.

Just when the Blues looked to wrap up the perfect night however, James handed boss Potter another injury problem.

England will also sweat on James’ issue, given the stellar wide man’s potential impact in Qatar.

Chelsea will roll onwards in Group E though, the Blues now in control of their destiny after two fine wins over Milan.

New boss Potter’s influence grows every day and the west Londoners appear to be warming to the ex-Brighton man’s approach.

  • Shakhtar 1-1 Real Madrid: Rudiger’s last-gasp equaliser denies famous win

Antonio Rudiger’s last-minute header shattered Shakhtar Donetsk hearts in Warsaw, with a 1-1 draw securing Real Madrid’s spot in the Champions League knockout stages.

Oleksandr Zubkov opened the scoring a minute into the second half to put the Ukrainian side in sight of a sensational result on Tuesday, with the hosts close to doubling their lead when Lassina Traore clipped the crossbar.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side, needing a point to secure safe passage to the round of 16, went for broke in the closing stages by moving Antonio Rudiger into a forward role.

That provided the breakthrough in the closing seconds, the German defender heading past Anatoliy Trubin to deny what would have been a famous victory.

A passive first half saw limited opportunities, Karim Benzema having the first sight of goal after 18 minutes with a stinging shot to test Anatoliy Trubin, who then enjoyed a quiet spell before tipping Federico Valverde’s effort from long distance over the bar.

Shakhtar capitalised on their visitors’ poor showing by taking the lead just minutes into the second period, Bohdan Mykhailichenko providing the cross for Zubkov to head past compatriot Andriy Lunin.

As below-par Madrid toiled, Shakhtar continued to pose more threat – Traore rounding Lunin but only chipping his effort against the crossbar, with Zubkov then forcing the Madrid goalkeeper into action before Mykhaylo Mudryk dragged an attempt wide.

Those missed chances ultimately proved costly, with makeshift striker Rudiger – having nodded just wide a few moments prior – heading home in the fifth minute of stoppage time to send Madrid through.

What does it mean? Shakhtar raising hope

In a week that saw Russia resume missile strikes across Ukraine, including on the capital in Kyiv, Shakhtar displayed a valiant performance in their adopted home in Poland.

Fans of the club have not been able to watch their side in Donetsk since 2014, with the Donetsk Oblast region one of three now annexed by Russia, but Shakhtar have flown the flag for Ukraine in the Champions League and were agonisingly close to a memorable win.

While Rudiger’s last-gasp header will be a bitter pill to swallow, Shakhtar can hold their head high following a display where they were by far the better side and deserved more than the point they finished with. They sit third in Group F, a point behind second-placed RB Leipzig with two games remaining.

    Zubkov makes his mark

Benzema, one goal shy of 75 in the Champions League for Real Madrid, would have been expected to be among the most impressive attacking performers in Warsaw but that title was clinched by Zubkov.

The midfielder had five attempts on goal, more than any other player on the field, making an impact in a notable way despite finishing with 67 per cent passing accuracy – lower than anyone else.

    Hapless Hazard

Eden Hazard’s woes with Madrid are well documented and the Belgium forward was again a passenger, failing to find a foothold in the game before being hauled off shortly before the hour mark.

Hazard registered just one touch in the box and four final-third entries, with his total of 35 touches being less than any other starting player for Madrid. In comparison, Vinicius Junior, his replacement, had 31 touches.

    Key Opta Facts

    – Madrid have 10 points after four Champions League group stage matches this season (W3 D1), their most at this stage since 2015-16.
    – Shakhtar have won just one of their last 11 games in the Champions League, drawing five and losing five. The Ukrainian side did, however, end a run of three consecutive defeats against Madrid in the competition.
    – Rudiger’s equaliser (94:31) was Madrid’s joint-third latest goal in the Champions League and also the club’s latest goal in the group stage.
    – Zubkov has scored two goals in 10 Champions League appearances, with both of those goals coming against Madrid.
    – Zubkov’s goal came after 34 seconds of the second half, making it Shakhtar’s earliest second-half goal in the competition, overtaking Willian’s effort against Chelsea in November 2012 (scored at 46:43)

    What’s next?

Madrid host Barcelona in El Clasico on Sunday, while Shakhtar face Dynamo Kyiv on the same day.

  • Celtic 0-2 RB Leipzig: Werner and Forsberg condemn Bhoys

Goals from Timo Werner and Emil Forsberg condemned Celtic to an early Champions League exit as RB Leipzig ran out 2-0 winners in Glasgow on Wednesday.

Werner adjusted to nod in the first after Leipzig survived an early onslaught, then he turned provider as Forsberg made the points safe with an outstanding side-footed finish.

While Celtic could still finish third in Group F and qualify for the Europa League’s knockout round play-offs, that will be the limit of the Bhoys’ ambitions in their final two matches following a third defeat in four Champions League outings.

Roared on by a frenzied home crowd, Celtic went close twice in quick succession after 27 minutes, with Matt O’Riley drilling an effort against the base of the post from 18 yards out before Greg Taylor hit a looping volley onto the crossbar.

Celtic continued to press in the second half but suffered a huge blow 15 minutes from time as Werner raced onto Andre Silva’s chipped cross to plant a header into the top-right corner.

Giorgos Giakoumakis went close to a leveller with a stooping close-range header, but the hosts were put out of their misery by Forsberg with six minutes remaining. He controlled Werner’s pass before lifting a classy finish beyond Joe Hart.

  • Joao Mario penalty cancels out Mbappe’s record strike

Kylian Mbappe became Paris Saint-Germain’s leading scorer in European competition but Christophe Galtier’s side were held to a 1-1 draw against Benfica in the Champions League.

Tuesday’s match at the Parc des Princes came on the back of widespread reports Mbappe was unhappy at PSG and would be seeking a January transfer.

PSG’s football advisor Luis Campos emphatically denied those reports before kick-off, and the France international put the speculation to one side to convert a first-half penalty, nosing his side ahead and overtaking Edinson Cavani in the club’s European record books.

Joao Mario equalised with a penalty of his own after the restart, however, with Mbappe seeing a late goal disallowed for offside as both teams missed the chance to secure progression from Group H.

PSG were thankful for a VAR reprieve in the 18th minute, an offside call seeing referee Michael Oliver change his decision to award Benfica a penalty for an Achraf Hakimi handball.

However, there was no doubt over Oliver’s next penalty decision after Antonio Silva clumsily felled Juan Bernat, with Mbappe calmly sending Odysseas Vlachodimos the wrong way for his milestone goal six minutes before half-time.

Mbappe curled just wide in the second half before Marco Verratti brought down Rafa Silva just inside PSG’s area.

The foul was initially missed by Oliver, who swiftly changed his decision after consulting the pitchside monitor, with Joao Mario smashing a finish high into the back of Gianluigi Donnarumma’s net.

Mbappe thought he had struck a late winner, only to be ruled offside from Sergio Ramos’ flick after acrobatically volleying past Vlachodimos.

What does it mean? Sluggish PSG pass up progression chance

While reported disgruntlement continues in the French capital, Galtier has made an impressive start, becoming the first PSG coach since Unai Emery to go unbeaten in his first four Champions League games.

The French champions were looking for a record-equalling sixth straight win in UEFA’s flagship club competition, pre-dating Galtier’s appointment, but a malaise set in in the second half as they squandered their lead.

Their lacklustre performance was particularly surprising, given Juventus’ earlier defeat at Maccabi Haifa meant a win would send them through – Benfica had the same chance, but will gladly take a point back to Lisbon.

    Ney hard feelings?

Speculation over Mbappe’s future was reportedly in part due to a breakdown in the relationship between Neymar and the World Cup-winning forward.

While Mbappe will steal the headlines for his historic 31st European goal for PSG, Neymar proved capable of playing the backing role as he created a team-high two chances on a frustrating day for the club.

    Rubbish Ramos

Up against his namesake Sergio, Benfica forward Goncalo Ramos failed to leave his mark leading Roger Schmidt’s frontline.

The Portuguese attacker scored a hat-trick against Rio Ave last Saturday but struggled here, winning three of his team-leading 13 duels and missing the target with a presentable second-half header.

    Key Opta Facts

    – PSG have failed to win either of their games against Benfica this season (D2), the first team they have failed to beat an opponent in a group stage since 2018-19 (D2 vs Napoli).
    – Benfica are winless in away Champions League games against French sides (D3 L3), scoring just two goals in these six matches.
    – PSG extended the competition record of scoring in consecutive Champions League group stages games – 42 since a 1-0 loss at Real Madrid in November 2015.
    – Mbappe has been involved in 23 goals in his last 18 Champions League appearances. He has tallied 57 goal involvements in 57 games in the competition (37 goals, 20 assists).
    – Joao Mario has scored in two of his last three Champions League games, having failed to find the net in any of his first 19 appearances in the competition.

    What’s next?

PSG return to Ligue 1 action at home to Marseille in Sunday’s Le Classique, while Benfica visit third-tier side Caldas SC in the Taca de Portugal the day before.

  • Ghana-IMF engagement: Albert Essien chairs 5-member committee leading financial sector inputs

A 5-member Consultative Committee has been set up by the government to lead extensive stakeholder engagements as the country engages with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

The Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta at a press briefing on September 28, 2022 announced that a committee will be set up for some broader stakeholder consultative inputs in finalising any deal with the Fund.

Astute banker, Albert Essien, will chair the Consultative Committee as Simon Dornoo acts as the vice chair.

The group will examine views from financial sector players in  banking, asset, management, pensions, and insurance, to deal with issues in the financial sector before reaching a deal with the IMF for an economic programme.

The other members of the committee are Alex Asiedu, Mabel Nyarkoa Porbley, and Peter Enti.

The committee will be giving counseling and will among other things, lead discussions with the financial services industry and other stakeholders to provide industry-wide inputs and transmit industry concerns on debt management strategy to the Ministry of Finance and the Bank of Ghana.

The expectations and goals are to ensure orderliness and confidence in government’s negotiations with the IMF.

Mr. Essien is a seasoned financial specialist with 30 years of experience in the banking sector.

He is the former CEO of Ecobank Group. Albert serves on several boards including the Development Finance Institute (Fin Dev), Canada, Old Mutual – South Africa, LMI Holdings as well as Jumo Africa.

He is also the Board Chairman of Ghana Amalgamated Trust.  Albert holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from the University of Ghana, Legon and is a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Bankers, Ghana.

The delegation of representatives from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which arrived in Ghana on September 26, 2022, have concluded their talks with the Ghanaian government.

Mr Stephane Roudet, IMF Mission Chief to Ghana, who led the team on Friday, October 7, said his organization and Ghana’s government had constructive discussions on policies aimed at restoring macroeconomic stability.

According to him, the two parties are “laying the foundation for stronger and more inclusive growth.” “We reaffirm our commitment to support Ghana in these challenging times, consistent with the IMF’s policies,” Mr Roudet added.

During the second period of engagement, the IMF/World Bank and the government undertook a debt sustainability analysis (DSA) to inform the programme negotiations, since a framework for any debt operations had yet to be established.

Again, the Fund and the government are now reviewing the country’s medium-term macro-fiscal framework.

This is looking at a three-year expenditure plan which sets out the medium-term expenditure priorities and budget constraints, as well as focuses on sectors that need to be developed and refined.

Mr Roudet also noted that “key areas of focus included ensuring public finance sustainability while protecting the vulnerable, bolstering the credibility of monetary and exchange rate policies to reduce inflation and rebuild external buffers, preserving financial sector stability, and steps to encourage private investment and growth, including by improving governance, transparency, and public sector efficiency.”

Negotiations between the IMF and Ghana are far from over.

Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, has revealed that the government and the Fund will carry on with their negotiations on an economic programme for Ghana in Washington, DC, the United States of America (U.S.A.). This is expected to take place this week.

While speaking at the signing of a $1.13 billion cocoa syndicated loan in Accra, the sector minister asserted that “we are very confident that the discussions that we are having with the Fund will put us in the right landing zone.

  • Nika Shakarami: Videos show Iran teenager protesting before death

Videos posted online show an Iranian teenager protesting hours before her death, her mother has told BBC Persian.

Nika Shakarami, 16, is seen standing on a dumpster and burning her headscarf in Tehran on 20 September, as others chant slogans against the Islamic Republic.

She later disappeared after telling a friend she was being chased by police.

Her mother, Nasrin, also denied she was in a CCTV video put out by officials to support their claim that her death was not connected to the protests that day.

Mrs Shakarami has accused security forces of murdering her daughter, but officials have said she died after being thrown from a building that was under construction, possibly by workmen.

Last week, Iranian state TV broadcast blurry footage showing a teenage girl or woman whom it identified as Nika walking down an alley and entering a building through a door.

But Mrs Shakarami told BBC Persian on Monday that the person in the video was not her daughter. Another source close to the family also said that they did not walk like Nika.

Mrs Shakarami also alleged that her sister Atash and brother Mohsen had been forced into making false statements about Nika’s death while they were in detention.

“They threatened to detain my brother’s four-year-old child,” she said.

Mohsen was shown on TV last Wednesday night speaking against the current protests, as someone off camera seems to whisper to him: “Say it, you scumbag!” Atash was meanwhile seen saying that Nika “was killed falling from a building”. They were released after making the statements.

Nika’s family have said they located her body at the mortuary 10 days after she went missing, and that they were only allowed by officials to see her face for a few seconds in order to identify her. Atash has also said that the Revolutionary Guards told her that Nika was in their custody for five days and then handed over to prison authorities.

Mrs Shakarami said Nika had disappeared hours after attending the protest seen in videos that have surfaced on social media in recent days.

One of the videos show a girl dressed in black standing on a dumpster on a street and waving a burning headscarf. A crowd around her is heard chanting “death to the dictator” – a reference to the Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who has the final say on all state matters. Another video shows the same scene from a different angle.

“Like Nika, I have been against compulsory hijab since I was a child. But my generation was not brave enough to protest,” Mrs Shakarami told BBC Persian.

“People my age accepted years of suppression, intimation and humiliation, but my daughter protested and she had every right to do so.”

“Generation Z” – defined as those born 1997 and 2012 – have been at the forefront of the protests sparked by the death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old woman who was detained by the morality police for allegedly violating the Islamic Republic’s strict hijab law.

Nika is not the only young female protester to have been killed during the unrest.

The family of Hadis Najafi, 22, have said that she was shot dead by security forces while protesting in the city of Karaj, west of Tehran, on 21 September.

Another 16-year-old girl, Sarina Esmailzadeh, allegedly died after being severely beaten on the head with batons by security forces during protests in Karaj on 23 September, according to Amnesty International.

On Monday, the Iranian Society for Protecting the Rights of the Child reported that a total of 28 children had been killed during the protests.

Many other children had been arrested and were being held at detention centres, the group said.

  • Van Dijk admits Liverpool’s confidence is creeping away

Virgil van Dijk admits Liverpool’s “confidence is creeping away” after making their worst start to a Premier League campaign in a decade.

Liverpool’s 3-2 loss to Arsenal in Sunday’s contest at Emirates Stadium leaves them with 10 points from eight games – their lowest return since the 2012-13 season (nine).

The Reds have conceded 16 goals across their past 12 league matches and kept just two clean sheets, while conceding the opening goal of the game on 10 occasions.

And centre-back Van Dijk, who has come in for criticism for his performances this campaign, accepts a lack of belief is playing a part in Liverpool’s disappointing run of form.

“Confidence is definitely a thing that plays a part. We’re all human beings,” he told Sky Sports.

“Sometimes you need a bit of confidence in certain moments. If it’s not as high, it won’t help in certain situations.

“Every human being needs confidence to perform at the highest level. If you’re not winning, confidence is creeping away.

“We know we can turn it around but we have to work hard. That’s the only thing to do and the only way forward as well.”

Liverpool twice drew level in their enthralling contest with Arsenal, only for Bukayo Saka to claim victory for the home side with a 76th-minute penalty.

The spot-kick was awarded after Thiago Alcantara was adjudged to have fouled Gabriel Jesus, but Van Dijk does not believe it should have been given.

“Obviously it was a very tough game for both sides. We had good moments, we had bad moments,” he said.

“Then it got decided by a penalty that from my point of view wasn’t a penalty. But it goes so quick, I haven’t looked in slow motion.

“Unfortunately we couldn’t get the points to bring with us back to Liverpool.”

Liverpool are 10th in the table, 14 points adrift of pacesetters Arsenal with a game in hand, after failing to win any of their opening four league games for the first time in 12 years.

In contrast to their opponents’ slow start, Arsenal have won at least eight of their first nine league games for only the fourth time in their history.

“We know they’re in the best moment of their lives,” Van Dijk added. “They’ve had a great season and we knew it was always going to be tough.

“But I think we had good moments and created good chances at times. It’s hard to lose it by a penalty in my opinion, but it’s the case, so we have to deal with that.”

Liverpool switch focus back to the Champions League on Wednesday with a trip to Rangers, before hosting Manchester City on their return to league action next weekend.

  • Messi to miss Benfica clash

Lionel Messi will miss Paris Saint-Germain’s Champions League clash with Benfica on Tuesday, but head coach Christophe Galtier expects the forward to return for next weekend’s game with Marseille.

The Argentina international missed out on his side’s ill-tempered Ligue 1 match with Reims over the weekend with a calf injury, and was forced to watch from the sidelines as they played out a goalless draw.

Hopes that the 35-year-old might return in time for the crucial European clash with their Portuguese visitors have been dashed now, too, with Messi set to miss out again.

But while Galtier confirmed he would be an expected absentee, he suggested that the attacker is close to a return to action, and could well feature in Le Classique on October 16.

“Messi felt discomfort in his calf during the first game against Benfica,” he stated. “He thought he could take part in tomorrow’s game, but in the end, he would be limited.

“He is better, but he still has an unpleasant feeling. He preferred to abstain. We will watch his recovery, but it is very likely that he will be present against Marseille.”

Galtier acknowledged losing Messi is a blow, with the Argentinian having rediscovered his form after a difficult first season with PSG following his exit from Barcelona, having scored five goals and added seven assists in Ligue 1 this term.

“We know the importance of Leo to our game, his form and the connection he can have with the other players,” Galtier added. “We cannot be happy with his absence.

“But we will have to find other solutions and other connections where we can bring danger to the Benfica defence.”

  • Rabiot focused on turning Juve’s fortunes around rather than his future

Adrien Rabiot is unsure about his future as he tries to “drag” Juventus back into form following a poor start to the season.

Rabiot’s contract expires at the end of the season and there appears to be no sign of him signing a new one.

The France midfielder was linked with Manchester United during the last transfer window, but a deal reportedly fell through before the Red Devils signed Casemiro from Real Madrid.

Juve are eighth in Serie A after a 2-0 defeat to champions Milan at San Siro on Saturday and face a battle to qualify for the Champions League round of 16, with the pressure on head coach Massimiliano Allegri.

The Bianconeri got up and running in Group H by beating Maccabi Haifa last week to sit four points behind Paris Saint-Germain and Benfica, Rabiot scoring twice in a 3-1 victory.

Rabiot says his focus is on turning Juve’s fortunes around ahead of the return fixture against Maccabi at Sammy Ofer Stadium on Tuesday.

“I feel important for the team, but I think we all are,” he said. “Everyone has an important role. Right now I feel good, I’m trying to drag the team and do my best to help my team-mates.

“I don’t know about the future. There are other things to think about now. I’m focused on the pitch, getting out of this difficult moment. Then we’ll see what happens.”

  • Sule hails ‘exceptional talent’ Bellingham’s maturity

Jude Bellingham is “an exceptional talent”, says Borussia Dortmund team-mate Niklas Sule, who suggested the midfielder projects a sense he is wise beyond his years.

The England international has continued to flourish at the Bundesliga outfit this season, with an increased leadership role under Edin Terzic’s watch.

Bellingham was handed the captain’s armband for the first time earlier this month for their top-flight clash with Cologne, and retained it for last week’s Champions League rout against Sevilla.

The 19-year-old’s maturity has not gone unnoticed by the rest of Dortmund’s squad, and speaking ahead of Tuesday’s return clash with the LaLiga team, Sule had fulsome praise for the playmaker.

“I think that Jude is an exceptional talent,” he stated. “I have rarely seen a player at age 19 that made you feel like he might as well have already three children at home and is a family father.

“He has that implicitness in his game where he knows, ‘I will lead the team and fight for the team’.

“That is very, very impressive to see. I am having deep exchanges with him and try to help him a little.”

Bellingham’s rich form for Dortmund seems almost certain to assure him of a place on the plane to the Qatar 2022 World Cup with Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions.

The teenager may even be a lock to start for England in their tournament opener against Iran on November 21, amid Kalvin Phillips’ injury troubles, with the former favoured during the September international break.

  • PSG owners QSI acquire minority stake in Braga

Paris Saint-Germain’s owners, Qatar Sports Investments (QSI), have acquired a minority stake in Portuguese club Braga.

QSI have turned PSG into a European heavyweight since taking ownership in 2011, during which time the Ligue 1 giants have won 29 trophies.

The Doha-based organisation announced on Monday they have purchased 21.67 per cent of the share capital in Braga, with the deal set to be certified in the coming months.

Braga’s best-ever finish in the Primeira Liga came in the 2009-10 campaign when finishing runners-up to Benfica.

They are European regulars, having played in the group stage of the Europa League in seven of the past eight seasons and reached the final in 2011.

QSI chairman and PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi said: “Qatar Sports Investments is proud to invest in leading sports businesses and brands around the world, enabling them to reach their full potential.

“Portugal is a country founded on football – with some of the most passionate fans and one of the best talent systems in the world.

“SC Braga is an exemplary Portuguese institution – with a proud history, enormous ambition and a reputation for excellence on and off the pitch.

“As an investor and partner, we look forward to the club innovating, growing and developing further – across the men’s and women’s teams, on the commercial and brand side, and across all the communities and businesses it supports – as SC Braga continues its ambitious path.”

Braga president Antonio Salvador added: “Braga is delighted to welcome Qatar Sports Investments as an investor in our club.

“We believe that this is the right shareholder to accelerate our growth and expansion, helping us deliver on our amazing potential as a club.

“The extraordinary experience of Qatar Sports Investments – with its global expertise, acumen and a track record of amazing results across sport and business – will bring enormous value and help us deliver on our ambitious plans.

“It is a great day for our club, our fans and our city, as we look forward to many future successes for SC Braga.”

Braga finished fourth in the Portuguese top flight last season, behind powerhouses Porto, Sporting CP and Benfica, and are third after nine matches of the current campaign.

  • Atletico Madrid confirm permanent signing of Griezmann from Barcelona

Antoine Griezmann is leaving Barcelona to Atletico Madrid after signing a deal that runs through until June 2026.

Madrid have confirmed the permanent signing of Griezmann.

Griezmann returned to Atletico on a two-year loan deal at the start of last season after a couple of relatively underwhelming campaigns at Camp Nou.

Diego Simeone’s side reportedly had an obligation to pay Barcelona €40million if Griezmann played a certain number of minutes, which has restricted his playing time this term.

The France international has appeared in all eight of his side’s LaLiga games, but he has played 30 minutes or under in six of those contests.

However, Atletico announced on their official website on Monday that an agreement has been reached for Griezmann to officially become their player again.

Barcelona sporting director Mateu Alemany said on Sunday that Atletico would pay just under €20m for the 31-year-old.

Griezmann is into his seventh season as an Atletico player across two spells and has made 403 appearances for the club, scoring 144 times in all competitions.

  • Putin threatens further response to ‘terror attacks’

President Vladimir Putin chaired a meeting of his security council today – an unusual occurrence, as these meetings are usually held on Fridays.

In a statement that was broadcast by state news channels, he accused Ukraine of bombing the Turkish Stream gas pipeline – a natural gas pipeline running from Russia to Turkey through the Black Sea.

Putin also said that Ukraine had attacked the Kursk nuclear power plant in western Russia, going back to accusations from last August, when Russia’s FSB security service said Ukrainian saboteurs had blown up electricity pylons in the Kursk region, about 100km (60 miles) from Ukraine’s north-east border.

At the time, the FSB said the attacks had affected the “technological process of functioning” of the Kursk nuclear plant.

In his statement, Putin also said that Ukraine was behind attacks on the Zaporizhzhia power plant, which he said amounted to “atomic terrorism”. Ukraine and Russia have frequently traded accusations of shelling the facility.

Putin added that “should attempts to carry out terrorist attacks on the territory of the Russian Federation continue, the response will be harsh and proportionate to the level of the threats”.

  • Brighton star Mwepu forced to retire due to heart condition

After being diagnosed with a hereditary heart condition, Enock Mwepu has been forced to end his playing career.

Brighton announced this in a statement, revealing that Mpewu would be at an “extremely high risk of suffering a potentially fatal cardiac event” should  continue to play professionally.

Mwepu is set to retire at the age of 24 years. The sad player has revealed that he was keen to remain in football despite having to hang up his boots.

He said: “A boy from a small Zambian township called Chambishi has some news to share. He stood strong to follow his dream of playing football at the highest level, and by the grace of God he lived his dream by reaching the Premier League.

“Some dreams, however, come to an end so it is with sadness that I announce the need to hang up my boots because of the medical advice I have received.

“This is, however, not the end of my involvement with football. I plan to stay involved in some capacity.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone that supported me in my football journey, including my wife and family, my agent 12MAN, the Zambian FA, all my previous clubs, team-mates and coaches and especially everyone at Brighton.”

Mwepu became ill while flying to link up with Zambia during the international break and undertook tests in Brighton after spending time at a hospital in Mali.

It was then that his condition, which manifests later in life and can worsen over time, was diagnosed.

Seagulls head of medicine Adam Brett said: “It is a terrible blow for Enock, but he has to put his health and his family first and this is the right choice, however difficult it is to quit the game he loves.

“Of course, given this is Enock’s career and a decision which can’t be taken lightly we have taken our time to be as thorough as possible, completed advanced cardiac investigations and collaborated with clinical experts to gain the best second opinions for Enock.

“We will be helping him make sure the condition is managed with the appropriate treatment for him to otherwise live a long and healthy life.”

Chairman Tony Bloom added: “We are all absolutely devastated for Enock.

“He and his family have had a traumatic few weeks and while we are just thankful he has come through that period, he has seen such a promising career cut short at such a young age.

“As a club we will give him all the love, help and support we possibly can to make a full recovery, and then as he decides on the next steps in his life.”

Mwepu played 27 times for Brighton after arriving from FC Salzburg in 2021 and managed six goals in 23 caps for Zambia.

  • Princess Diana lost so much weight between her wedding and honeymoon, new book reveals

Princess Diana‘s struggle with bulimia took such a toll after her wedding that her ring had to be adjusted following her honeymoon, according to a new book.

Valentine Low, a Times of London royal correspondent, authored “Courtiers: The Hidden Power Behind the Crown,” which was released in the UK on Thursday. In the book, he traces the modern history of the royal family through the lens of courtiers, a term used for the people working within each royal household.

In the chapter “Growing Up,” Low covers the experience of Michael Colborne, a private secretary who worked for Charles and Diana early into their marriage. Colborne, the author wrote, witnessed not only the “disintegration” of the couple’s marriage, which began after their 1981 wedding, but the beginning of Diana’s struggle with bulimia nervosa, an eating disorder.

According to Low, Charles had summoned Colborne to Balmoral, Scotland, where he and Diana spent some time following their tumultuous two-week honeymoon in 1981. It was there that Low wrote Diana opened up to the private secretary about how unhappy she was and, after an argument between her and Charles, that the prince threw her wedding ring at him.

“Colborne heard Charles and Diana having a massive row. Then Charles suddenly appeared, and threw something at Colborne: it was Diana’s wedding ring, which Colborne somehow managed to catch,” the author wrote.

“Diana had lost so much weight that it no longer fitted and needed to be adjusted,” he added.

Diana's ring required an adjustment soon after their wedding in July 1981.

Then 20 years old, Diana had already shown signs of her condition for months. The UK’s National Health Service describes it as an eating disorder and mental health condition which involves the individual eating “a lot of food in a very short amount of time (binge eating) and then make themselves sick” in order to prevent weight gain.

According to Andrew Morton’s 1992 biography, based on confession tapes recorded by the princess, Diana’s condition began before her wedding to Charles.

“The bulimia started the week after we got engaged and would take nearly a decade to overcome,” she said on the tapes, according to Vogue. “My husband put his hand on my waistline and said: ‘Oh, a bit chubby here, aren’t we?’ and that triggered off something in me.”

Her wedding ring is also not the only item to have been sized down due to her struggle with bulimia. As Vogue also reported, her wedding dress designer said when they began fittings for the big day, Diana’s waist measured between 26 to 27 inches. But by her wedding in July 1981, her waist dropped to 23 inches.

Later in life, the princess used her experience to become an advocate for others, according to Elle Magazine.

During a keynote address in 1993, she opened up public discourse surrounding eating disorders and touched on how they can affect an individual’s overall health.

  • Family dogs kill 2 Tennessee children, injure mom

Two young children are dead and their mother suffered major injuries after two family dogs attacked a baby and toddler outside their West Tennessee home.

The mauling took place outside of the family’s Memphis-area home on Thursday, the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office reported.

Kirstie Bennard, 30, suffered critical injuries when she tried to intervene in the attack on her 5-month-old boy, Hollace Dean, and 2-year-old girl, Lilly Jane, family and police said.

“She put her body on top of Lilly’s to try and protect her after the attack started,” Bennard’s uncle by marriage, Jeff Gibson told USA TODAY on Saturday. “Both (dogs) started attacking her while she lay on Lilly.”

The two children were pronounced dead when officials arrived at the home, the sheriff’s office reported.

Their mother was taken to a local hospital in critical condition, officials said.

Gibson said his nephew, Colby Bennard, was not home when the attack took place.

It was not immediately known what provoked the mauling.

John Morris, the public information officer for the sheriff’s office, told USA TODAY Saturday the case remained an ongoing and active investigation. He did not say whether charges were pending in the case.

Kirstie Bennard, 30, suffered critical injuries when she tried to pull their family's dogs off of her 5-month-old boy and 2-year-old girl. Both children died in the Oct. 6, 2022 attack in West Tennessee.

The mauling, Gibson said, lasted about 10 minutes.

Gibson wrote on Facebook Bennard suffered “uncountable amount of stitches and bite marks over her entire body, including her face.” He also posted a link to a fundraiser created by family friends on Friday to help the family.

The dogs – two pit bulls that belonged to the family – were euthanized at Memphis Animal Services Thursday.

The family owned the pets, Cheech and Mia, for more than eight years without a violent incident, Kelsey Canfield, the mother’s best friend, told Fox News.

“I can promise you those children were her world, and if there was any inkling of danger, she would have never had those dogs near her kids,” Canfield told the outlet. “Those children were everything to them, and they just have a really long journey ahead.”

  • Russia’s missile hits German embassy in Kyiv

The building housing the German consulate in Kyiv has been by a Russian missile strike, according to Germany’s foreign ministry.

There have been no casualties reported. It has emerged that the building has not been in use by Germany since the war broke out.

The former chairman of the BĂśll Foundation in Kyiv, Sergei Sumlenny, posted photos on Twitter and said addressing Chancellor Olaf Scholz (64, SPD) and Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock (41, Greens):

“The building where the visa office of the German embassy in Kyiv was located was hit by Russians today. Maybe some Leopards can be sent to check the situation on the ground?”

  • Man who assaulted his ex jailed for six years

A man accused of tying up and pouring boiling water over his ex in a “horrific and pre-meditated” attack has been jailed for six years by the Sheffield Crown Court.

Reports have it that Sam Wild, 38, sent his victim to a hotel after having drinks together in Sheffield. He then tricked her into taking her clothes off.

He then carried on the pretence and tied her up before pouring boiling water over her face and body, leaving her scarred for life.

The unnamed woman told police she was too scared to refuse Sam sex.

Wild in previous court hearings pleaded guilty to Section 18 assault – wounding with intent to do grievous bodily harm.

Wild fled the hotel, near the Meadowhall shopping centre in Sheffield, leaving his victim tied up and screaming in pain.

She was finally able to free herself and alert hotel staff, who called police.

Wild and his victim had previously been in a relationship but were separated at the time the ‘horrific and pre-meditated’ attack took place, police said.

Speaking after sentencing, PC Jane Guest, from South Yorkshire Police, said: “Wild’s victim suffered significant and extensive burn injuries to her face and body – both first and second degree.

“She was in the specialist burns unit for weeks and even now, continues to receive treatment.

“She has demonstrated exceptional strength, not just in her physical recovery, but in her support of our investigation.

“Her victim statement was read aloud in court, which was incredibly powerful and deeply upsetting.

“She will be scarred for life by Wild, not just physically but psychologically too.

“To subject another person to such agonising pain and harm is incomprehensible and no jail sentence can ever undo the damage caused by Wild’s violence.

“I truly hope that with the conclusion of proceedings this week and the lifetime restraining order granted against Wild, the victim feels her journey towards recovery has taken another shift forward.”

  • Chad military ruler, Gen Mahamat DĂŠby, to be sworn in for two-year term

General Mahamat DĂŠby, who is Chad’s military ruler, will today, Monday, be sworn-in as the country’s transitional president.

This means he will be extending his stay in power by two years following recommendations from a contentious national inclusive dialogue process that concluded last week.

Gen Mahamat has pledged to ensure institutional reforms, including adopting a new constitution, an electoral code and creating a new election commission.

Various opposition groups, the Catholic church and rebels responsible for last year’s killing of Gen Mahamat’s father, Idriss DĂŠby, boycotted the talks aimed at determining Chad’s political future.

The US warned it would impose sanctions on the ruling junta if it extended the transition. The African Union similarly warned Chad against extending the transition.

Lack of consensus over the transition could worsen political tensions and a long-running rebellion.

  • Trump accuses US for ‘almost forcing’ Russia’s invasion of Ukraine

Former US President Donald Trump is blaming his side for “almost forcing” Russian President Vladimir Putin to orchestrate Ukraine’s invasion.

According to him, should he have won the 2020 election and not President Joe Biden, the war between Russia and Ukraine would never have happened.

During an interview on Saturday morning on Real America’s Voice, a right-wing network, the former president said “Ukraine and Russia would not be fighting. It doesn’t mean they’d love each other, but there’s no way they’d be fighting, and there’s no way Putin would have actually gone in.”

“They actually taunted him, if you really look at it, our country and our so-called leadership taunted Putin,” Trump said. “I would listen, I would say, you know, they’re almost forcing him to go in with what they’re saying. The rhetoric was so dumb,” he added.

Trump did not provide any examples of how the US or President Joe Biden “taunted” Putin or what was the supposedly “dumb” rhetoric.

In the build-up to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Trump made the same baseless claim that Putin would not have invaded if he was still in power. He cited his positive relationship with the Russian leader.

“I knew Putin very well. I got along with him great. He liked me. I liked him,” Trump said during a “Clay Travis and Buck Sexton Show” appearance on February 22. “I mean, you know, he’s a tough cookie, got a lot of the great charm and a lot of pride, and he loves his country.”

Trump also controversially described Putin’s justification for invading as “savvy” and “genius.”

  • Man charged with smuggling pythons in his pants at US-Canadian border

A New York City man has been charged for smuggling three Burmese pythons into the US from Canada.

Calvin Bautista, 36, carried the snakes in his pants as he rode on a bus crossing the U.S.-Canadian border in 2018, the Associated Press reported.

According to a statement by the Department of Justice, the charges filed against Bautista are merely accusations.

If found guilty, Bautista would face a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.

Bautista case is being investigated by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and US Customs and Border Protection.

  • Dybala likely to miss remainder of 2022 over injury, Mourinho says

Jose Mourinho has said Paulo Dybala may not feature for Roma again this year as the Argentine is recovering from an injury after Sunday’s 2-1 win over Lecce.

Dybala began to limp and clutch his left thigh after he stroked home the winner from the penalty spot when Gabriel Strefezza cancelled out Chris Smalling’s sixth-minute opener, finding the net for a third successive Serie A game.

He appeared to be in tears on the bench after being withdrawn.

Dybala’s return of six goals in 10 appearances for Roma this term is a team-high tally (in all competitions), but Mourinho could now be without the 28-year-old for a lengthy period.

Asked about Dybala’s condition after the win, Mourinho told DAZN: “I say bad, but I think very, very bad.

“I am not a doctor, but in my experience, and after speaking to Paulo, it’s unlikely we’ll see him this year.”

If Dybala is ruled out for a prolonged period, it would also represent a blow for Argentina ahead of the World Cup, with the forward having won 34 senior caps for the Albiceleste.

Meanwhile, despite Roma staying within a point of Serie A’s top four with the victory, Mourinho was displeased with their game management after the visitors had captain Morten Hjulmand sent off.

“There was fatigue, both physical and mental. Playing Thursdays and Sundays is tough,” Mourinho said. “When I see Udinese and Atalanta [who drew 2-2 earlier on Sunday], I understand that they don’t play midweek.

“We entered very well, with intensity and ambition. After that it was more difficult because we managed it badly; when you are tired, instead of playing simply you complicate things.

“Today we didn’t play well and we won, with Atalanta we played better and we lost [1-0 last month]. We have to manage tiredness better.”

  • Union in Kenya calls for ban on Saudi jobs amid abuse video

The Central Organisation of Trade Unions (Cotu) has urged the Kenyan government to ban employment agencies in the country from sending migrant workers to Saudi Arabia.

Their request comes after a viral video appeared to show a Kenyan woman breastfeeding dogs in the Gulf country.

The authenticity of the video is yet to be verified.

But speaking to reporters on Sunday, Cotu Secretary-General Francis Atwoli said the woman, who had left a two-month-old baby in Kenya, was compelled by her employer to breastfeed the puppies.

“I want to appeal to the administration to go the way the first government under former President Mwai Kibaki did. He banned all employment agencies in Kenya,” Mr Atwoli said.

The union leader asked President William Ruto to stop the “indirect slavery” of Kenyan migrants and negotiate for their welfare with the gulf countries.

High unemployment rates in Kenya has prompted young people to migrate to gulf countries in search of jobs as domestic workers and labourers.

Many migrants have reported mistreatment in the Middle East and most recently in Myanmar, Laos and Cambodia.

  • Al-Shabab disturbed after Somalia media ban

Islamist militant group al-Shabab has cautioned independent Somali media and journalists from adhering to a government directive that banned use of media materials created by the group.

The government published a list of banned pro-militant websites on Saturday and asked internet service providers to block them.

40 social media accounts that spread al-Shabab propaganda were also suspended and the government warned Somali journalists that it would “regard all al-Shabab-related propaganda coverage – including their terrorist acts and their ideology – as punishable crimes”.

In response, al-Shabab issued a statement accusing the government of a campaign “to silence the truth”.

The group also warned internet providers against blocking its affiliated media outlets.

Al-Shabab has a sophisticated media machinery that includes several affiliated media outlets and dozens of accounts across social media platforms.

The group’s outlets produce a daily mix of audio, text and video material containing the group’s activities and messages that are aimed at winning public support.

  • Xavi is ‘self-critical’ after limp Barcelona win

Barcelona head coach Xavi has admitted that he must seriously analyse his side’s recent drop in quality.

“I have to be very self-critical today,” he told DAZN. “The first half was good. In the second half, we stopped applying pressure; psychologically, we dropped off.

“It is important to take three points when you are not good though. We have won seven games in a row. You have to see the positives. Until an excellent performance arrives, you have to save these matches.”

He however insists they will “see the positives” after victory over Celta Vigo.

A poached first-half finish from Pedri was enough for a 1-0 win for the Blaugrana to extend their winning run in LaLiga to seven consecutive games and take them back to the summit on goal difference ahead of Real Madrid.

Yet between their latest result and a similar narrow triumph against Mallorca, Barca appear to be fading away from their early bullish intensity, with a loss to Inter in the Champions League further compounding matters.

With El Clasico looming for likely control of the title race, Xavi seemed less pressed about concerns over form though, suggesting the all-encompassing nature of the fixture balances out both Madrid and themselves.

“El Clasico, it is unpredictable,” he added. “Last year, we arrived on the back of a bad run of form, and yet we won 4-0. We will try to win and show personality, like we did last time.”

  • Egypt, Greece call gas deal between Libya and Turkey ‘illegal’

Egypt’s and Greece’s foreign ministers met Sunday in Cairo following controversial maritime and gas deals that their shared rival Turkey signed with a Libyan leader, officials said.

Cairo and Athens have strengthened ties in recent years, including cooperation in developing energy resources, combating terrorism, and signing new maritime border agreements with Cyprus.

At a joint news conference, Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias said talks with his Egyptian counterpart, Sameh Shukry, focused on the memorandums of understanding between Turkey and Abdul Hamid Dbeibah, the leader of one of two competing governments in divided Libya.

He said such agreements were a threat to regional stability.

The deals, signed last week in the Libyan capital of Tripoli, include the joint exploration of hydrocarbon reserves in Libya’s offshore waters and national territory.

Dendias slammed the deals as illegal, saying they infringed on Greek waters.

The Egyptian foreign minister, meanwhile, said Dbeibah’s government has no authority to conclude such deals, given that its mandate expired following Libya’s failure to hold nationwide elections in December last year.

He called for the U.N. to take a clear position on the legitimacy of Dbeibah’s government, saying the international body should not keep silent.

Turkey’s agreements with Dbeibah’s government came three years after another controversial agreement between Ankara and a former Tripoli government. That 2019 deal granted Turkey access to a contested economic zone in the gas-rich eastern Mediterranean Sea, fueling Turkey’s pre-existing tensions with Greece, Cyprus and Egypt over drilling rights in the region.

Dendias said the two ministers also discussed developments in the Aegean Sea, in reference to tensions with Turkey over the alleged deployment of dozens of U.S.-made armored vehicles by Greece to the Aegean islands of Samos and Lesbos.

There were no immediate comments from Turkey or Dbeibah’s government.

  • Ten Hag backs Ronaldo to hit his stride after scoring 700th club goal

Erik ten Hag is confident Cristiano Ronaldo will hit his stride after scoring his 700th club goal – and his first of the 2022-23 Premier League season – in Sunday’s 2-1 win at Everton.

Ronaldo had never previously scored a league goal at Goodison Park but he proved decisive after entering the fray in the first half.

Antony cancelled out Alex Iwobi’s opener before Ronaldo replaced the injured Anthony Martial, and the 37-year-old quickly made his mark by firing a left-footed finish beyond Jordan Pickford.

That strike was Ronaldo’s 700th in club football and his 144th across two spells at Old Trafford, and ensured United bounced back from last week’s derby thrashing by Manchester City.

Speaking at a post-match news conference, Ten Hag congratulated Ronaldo on his landmark and backed him to hit a rich vein of form in the coming weeks.

“That is really impressive, when you score 700 goals,” Ten Hag said. “It’s a huge performance, I’m really happy for him.

“I congratulate him on that performance and I’m also happy it’s his first goal this season in the Premier League. He had to wait for it and I’m sure there will be more goals.

“I think every player needs it, even when you are the best in the world, you need it, you need the goals.

“I worked with many goalscorers, especially them, they need goals in every season to have that feeling, to have the confirmation of their intuition.

“Once they have some goals, they come in the flow and games go easier. That will happen with him as well.”

United had lost eight of their previous 10 away league games ahead of their trip to Merseyside – including last Sunday’s dismal loss at the Etihad Stadium, and Ten Hag was pleased with the improvements on display.

“First of all, criticism is normal when you have a defeat, especially in a big game, in a derby, so we have to deal with that and you learn lessons,” Ten Hag added.

“In this moment, we collect the points, it’s not looking at the table, we have to win every game – it’s our aim.

“We have to improve every game, we have to improve the process, we have to prepare every game 100 per cent and we demand from the players that in every game they give their best.

“You see in this game, the spirit is really good in the squad – it’s not only the 11 players.

“Again, a sub coming on and scoring a goal, you see Victor Lindelof, Scott McTominay and Raphael Varane coming in, so we use more than 11 players and I am happy with that process.”

United goalkeeper David De Gea also praised Ronaldo following the win, hailing him for maintaining a professional attitude despite starting just one league game under Ten Hag.

“He’s never been in this situation before, but the way he works and trains, it’s just unbelievable,” De Gea told BT Sport. “It’s not easy times for him, but he showed he’s a great player.”

With De Gea’s United contract expiring at the end of the season – although the club has an option for an extra year – the Spaniard also revealed he would like to commit his future to the club.

“I’m just very focused on the games, helping the team as much as I can,” he added. “Of course, I would like to be here for more years, so let’s see what happens in the future. I’m really, really happy here.”

  • Galar Gdański: Three killed in Poland as wave capsizes tourist boat

Three people have died after a wooden tourist boat capsized in the northern Polish city of Gdansk.

Officials said the boat most likely turned over due to waves generated by a nearby tug boat.

Fourteen people, including two crew members, were on board when the Galar Gdański capsized on the Motlawa river on Saturday.

The state fire service said three people were pulled from the water and attempts were made to resuscitate them.

A 60-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene and two others later died in hospital.

One of the victims was a pregnant woman, local media report.

More than 20 firefighters, search and rescue units, and border guards were involved in the search and rescue operation.

The Mayor of Gdansk, Aleksandra Dulkiewicz, described the incident as an “enormous tragedy”.

She said the causes of the terrible accident would be explained “as soon as possible”, adding that survivors were under “professional medical and psychological care”.

Boats like the one which capsized are typically around nine metres long and can take up to 12 passengers and two crew members.

  • Nana Agradaa arrested over alleged church scam

The Ghana Police Service has arrested repented fetish priestess, Nana Agradaa, now known as Evangelist Mama Pat over her involvement in a money-doubling scheme.

This was announced in a statement by the Service shared via its social media handles on Sunday, October 9, 2022.

“The Police have arrested Patricia Asiedua alias Nana Agradaa following allegations of money doubling scam levelled against her by some members of the public. The suspect is currently assisting police investigation,” the statement said.

Earlier, the Ghana Police Service noted that it had begun an inquiry into the matter after congregants of Heaven Way Church took to social media suggesting that they had been duped by Nana Agradaa, the church’s founder.

“This is Agradaa’s church, Heaven way, and she advertised on her TV station that she was going to share monies with everyone only for us to get here, and she rather collects monies from people. She told people to bring ten million (GHC10,000) and come for two billion (GHC200,000) after which she asked people to leave the church. Things immediately turned chaotic here,” one of the videos’ voice-over commentators said.

According to reports, some individuals showed up in large numbers at the church of the repented priestess because she had previously announced through her television station, Thunder TV, that she was going to offer money to people.

After the affected victims presented their monies to her, she allegedly kicked them out of the building with the help of her able bodyguards.

In a Facebook post on Saturday, October 8, 2022, the police pleaded with the public to help trace the whereabouts of the suspect.

“The investigation was initiated following reports that have come to the attention of the Police on the matter. We would like to urge anyone with information that can assist the investigation to report to the Accra Regional Police Command at Accra Central close to the COCOBOD building. While investigation continues, we urge everyone, especially those who might have been affected to remain calm and not take the law into their own hands,” the statement emphasised.

This is not the first time the accused has come under public scrutiny for money doubling.

It will be recalled in 2021, Nana Agradaa was arrested for running two TV stations, Thunder TV and Ice1 TV without a license.

Her TV show, Sika Gari saw her assuring her gullible viewers that monies sent to her will be given back to them in double folds.

Nana Agradaa was later granted a ¢5,000 self-recognizance bail by an Accra Circuit Court.

  • AshantiGold unhappy with recent ruling by Appeals Committee of GFA on match-fixing scandal

Legends Association of Ashantigold has expressed their displeasure in the recent ruling by the Appeals Committee of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) following the club’s involvement in a match-fixing scandal.

Ashgold appealed the decisions of the GFA Disciplinary Committee after being found guilty of match manipulation in their 2020/21 Ghana Premier League Matchday 34 game played at the Obuasi Len Clay Stadium.

In its decision, the GFA Appeals Committee stated that evidence available to the Committee supports the conclusion reached by the Disciplinary Committee that the match was not played competitively or under competitive circumstances.

A statement from the Legends Association of Ashantigold reads, “This review request has become necessary amidst several inconsistencies identified in the decision of the GFA appeals committee on the match fixing allegations, including but not limited to the absence of a specific article quoted that found the club, Ashantigold as an entity guilty, as well as inconsistencies in stated regulations and corresponding sanctions.”

“We cannot say the likes of Simon Addo, Fatau Dauda, C.K Akornor, Sammy Adjei, Stephen Baidoo, Kamara Dini, Augustine Arhinful, Shaibu Yakubu, Yaw Akyeampong, Ofosu Amoah, Nana Arhin Duah, Mubarak Wakaso, Opoku Agyemang and Nii Afo Dodoo to name just a few never existed.”

  • Protests in Iran: Two members of security forces killed

Two members of Iran’s security forces have been killed in continuing protests against the authorities, state media have said.

Videos on social media show students and schoolgirls joining the demonstrations across the country.

Dozens of protesters have been killed since unrest began last month following the death of a young woman in custody.

Mahsa Amini was detained in Tehran by the morality police for allegedly not covering her hair properly.

The 22-year-old Iranian Kurd died in custody on 16 September, three days after her arrest.

One member of the Basij paramilitary militia was “killed by rioters with a gunshot” at one of the protest sites in Tehran, according to Basij News, the official website run by the Basij organisation.

A member of the Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC) was also killed on Saturday during protests in Sanandaj, the capital of Kurdistan province, Iranian media report.

At least 20 members of the IRGC, Basij and police forces have been killed over the past three weeks of protests, the media say.

Protests over the weekend were reported across the country, including Tehran and Sanandaj.

“Police forces used tear gas to disperse the crowds in dozens of locations in Tehran,” the official news agency Irna reported, adding the demonstrators had “chanted slogans and set fire to and damaged public property, including a police booth and trash bins”.

In similar protests in a number of other cities, demonstrators hurled Molotov cocktails at mosques, Basij centres and imams’ offices, the agency said.

Germany’s Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has called for tough measures against anyone responsible for cracking down on the protests.

She described those who “beat up women and girls on the street” as being on the wrong side of history, and said she would ensure the EU imposed entry bans on individuals responsible and froze their assets.

And in Norway, the Iran Human Rights group have said 185 people had been killed since the unrest began.

“At least 185 people, including at least 19 children, have been killed in the nationwide protests across Iran. The highest number of killings occurred in Sistan and Baluchistan province with half the recorded number,” it said on Saturday.

Separately on Saturday evening, state television was hacked by opponents of the government.

Pictures of the country’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei with a target on his head appeared in a news bulletin, together with captions calling on people to join the protests.

Also on Saturday, female students at al-Zahra University Tehran were reported to have chanted “get lost” during a visit there by President Ebrahim Raisi.

  • Kweku Baako’s brief on controversial Akonta Mining concession

The Company was granted a reconnaissance licence over an area of 135.87 square kilometres in Samreboi, on June 15, 2011, for a term of one year, to expire on June 2012. This area is outside the Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve.

When the reconnaissance licence expired, he was granted a prospecting licence over the same area of land, on December 31, 2012 for a term of two years to expire on December 30, 2014.

By section 41 of the Minerals and Mining Act, 2006 (Act 703), the area of a mining lease cannot exceed 63 square kilometres, i.e., 300 blocks (a block is 21 hectares).

So, after the prospecting, they divided the area into three [Samreboi (44.94 sq. km), Abekoase (44.94 sq. km) and Anhuntem 45.3 sq. km), and applied for three different leases in respect of the same area they had conducted the reconnaissance and prospecting.

The Samreboi and Abekoase leases were granted on 23rd July 2022 after he paid the mineral rights fees and ground rent.

The Minerals Commission’s letter by which the lease was submitted for the Minister’s signature clearly states that these areas are outside the Forest Reserve.

The site plans attached to the leases also show that they do not fall within the Forest Reserve (Appendix 6 and 7)

In respect of the Anhuntem application, the lease has not been granted because the company has not paid the mineral right fees and the ground rent. That area is also outside the Forest Reserve.

Apart from these three leases, the company applied for a prospecting licence to prospect for minerals in the Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve and applied for a Forest Entry Permit.

It was in respect of this application that the Forestry Commission wrote to the Minerals Commission, saying although they have no objection to mining, it must be subject to the Minister’s Directive on prospecting in Forest Reserves.

The application for a prospecting licence was later withdrawn, and the company applied for a mining lease over a portion of the Forest Reserve on August 25, 2022.

The company’s application was for a 24-year lease, but the Minerals Commission advised the company to revise the mine life to 10 years.

Beyond that, the application has not yet been determined by the Minister. So currently, the company has no mining lease to mine in the Forest, and they do not have a Forest Entry permit to enter the forest.

  • Filippo Ganna smashes cycling’s hour world record

Italy’s Filippo Ganna has smashed cycling’s hour world record – registering 56.792km in 60 minutes on a track in Switzerland.

He beat the previous UCI mark, 55.548km, set by his Ineos Grenadiers team-mate Dan Bigham in August, by a margin of 1.244km.

Ganna, 26, rode a specially designed 3D-printed Pinarello bike at the Tissot Velodrome in Grenchen.

“It’s amazing, fantastic for me and the staff who’ve worked on it,” he said.

The Italian, looking surprisingly fresh after his exploits, will now head to France for the Track World Championships, which start on Wednesday.

The hour record is the longest distance cycled in one hour and is considered one of the most prestigious records in the sport.

Ganna also beat British rider Chris Boardman’s ‘Best Human Effort’ record of 56.375km. That was set in 1996, using the aerodynamic ‘Superman’ riding position but it was later banned by cycling’s world governing body the UCI.

  • Klopp accepts Liverpool title hopes effectively over already

Jurgen Klopp has effectively conceded defeat in the Premier League title race following Liverpool’s underwhelming start to the season.

The Reds went into the weekend ninth in the table and will finish Sunday in the bottom half if they lose to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.

Klopp’s side have taken just 10 points from their opening seven league outings, winning only twice, and neither of those wins were in their three away games.

Not since the 2010-11 season under Roy Hodgson have the Reds failed to win any of their first four matches away from Anfield in the league.

They will do well to beat an Arsenal side who have won seven out of a possible eight fixtures to this point.

Despite Arsenal’s strong start, Manchester City are most people’s strong favourites for the title, particularly given Erling Haaland’s form.

Even if Liverpool win at Arsenal, they will need to make up a 10-point deficit on City – whom they face next weekend – and Klopp seemed to accept that is not going to happen.

“We still have the chance to create something really special from this point,” he said ahead of the game.

“Does it look at the moment that we will be champions at the end of the year? Unfortunately not.”

Klopp added: “But in all other competitions we’re not out yet.

“Nobody knows where we will end up in the league yet so let’s just give it a go, that’s it.

“Difficult? Yes. Impossible? No. That’s enough. So let’s just go from here.

“Did I think we’d be ninth after matchday seven? No, but this is the base where are now and we must go from here.”

Liverpool have won their previous four league matches against Arsenal, but they have never beaten the Gunners fives times in a row.

Deputy General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Peter Boamah Otokunor has officially announced his bid to lead the party as its new General Secretary, taking over from Mr. Johnson Asiedu Nketiah who has served in that capacity for 17 years.

In a live broadcast on his social media platforms, Mr. Otokunor pledged his resolve to work towards ensuring the party returns to governance and take over from an administration that has “plummeted the country’s economic fortunes and left millions in despair”.

According to him, he has had the privilege of learning from the best in the party and from his boss and mentor, Asiedu Nketiah hence, placing him well enough to take over as General Secretary of the NDC.

“In recent times, our party has gone through one of its most difficult phases, since 1992. • Hearts of Oak to touch down in Ghana on Sunday after loss to Real Bamako

Hearts of Oak are expected to arrive in Ghana on Sunday following their 3-0 loss to AS Real Bamako in the second round of the CAF Confederation Cup qualifiers in Mali on Saturday.

The Phobians will commence preparations once they touch down in the country as they look to overturn a 3-0 deficit in the first leg tie on Sunday, October 16 at the Accra Sports Stadium.

David Ocloo was in the dugout for the first time as interim coach of the club since he was appointed last week but he failed to inspire his side to a win at Stade du 26 Mars.

Real Bamako took the lead after 11 minutes, added a second in the 30th minute, and sealed the victory in the 75th minute.

Hearts of Oak’s attack failed to put the Malians to the test.

The winner of the tie will move to the play-off round where they will face one of the 16 losers from the CAF Champions League second round.

Hearts of Oak are Ghana’s sole representative in Africa following Asante Kotoko’s early exit from the CAF Champions League.

  • Transfer Talk: Liverpool ready to steam ahead with Rice move

Liverpool remain interested in Declan Rice and want to make the England international their marquee midfield signing next summer.

The Reds have been pushing to sign Three Lions team-mate Jude Bellingham, 19, but are facing tough competition from the likes of Real Madrid and others.

That will see them turn their attention to landing Rice’s signature, according to Football Insider.

West Ham’s captain, 23, has also been the subject of intense speculation in recent seasons and Jurgen Klopp is said to be a huge admirer.

The German boss wanted to sign Rice in the most recent summer window but the Anfield club were unwilling to provide the funds for the deal.

A hefty price tag of ÂŁ100million was quoted for Rice by the Hammers, with boss David Moyes even suggesting ÂŁ150m should be the minimum.

But the midfielder’s fee is set to fall as he enters the final 18 months of his contract in the new year.

He has reportedly rejected multiple offers to extend his stay at the London Stadium, with his current deal expiring in the summer of 2024.

Liverpool are expected to face competition from the likes of Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United for the London-born star.

  • Gambia cough syrup scandal: Police investigate deaths linked to medicine

Police in The Gambia have started an investigation into the deaths of 66 children, which have been linked to four brands of imported cough syrup.

Senior officials from the Medicine Control Agency and the importers have been called for questioning, the president’s office said.

President Adama Barrow said that the authorities would “leave no stone unturned” in the investigation.

Gambians, angry about what happened, are wondering who is to blame.

On Wednesday, the World Health Organization (WHO) issued a global alert over the four cough syrups – warning they could be linked to acute kidney injuries and the children’s deaths in July, August and September.

Bereaved parents have told the BBC how their children stopped being able to pass urine after being given the syrups. As their condition worsened, efforts to save their lives were fruitless.

The products – Promethazine Oral Solution, Kofexmalin Baby Cough Syrup, Makoff Baby Cough Syrup and Magrip N Cold Syrup – were manufactured by an Indian company, Maiden Pharmaceuticals, which had failed to provide guarantees about their safety, the WHO said.

The Indian government is also investigating the situation. The firm has not responded to a BBC request for comment.

Gambian health officials and Red Cross workers are now going door-to-door, as well as to pharmacies and markets, searching for the syrups as well as other medicines.

More than 16,000 products have been located so far and have been taken away for destruction, a Red Cross official told the BBC.

On Friday, President Barrow addressed the nation, expressing his regret for the loss of life saying that “the source of the contaminated drugs” would be investigated.

He announced plans to open a laboratory capable of testing whether medicines are safe and a review of relevant laws and guidelines for imported drugs.

He also said that “the child mortality figure of 66 is not at much variance with the recorded data for similar periods in the past”, which left some wondering whether the authorities thought that these deaths were unusual.

The president followed this up on Saturday evening with a more robust statement, suspending the licence of the suspected importer and announcing the police investigation.

Some of the parents who lost their children have told the BBC that they are considering taking legal action of their own against the authorities.

  • US jobs growth slows as policymakers fight inflation

Jobs growth in the US has slowed for a second month, in a sign that the labour market in the world’s largest economy may be starting to cool.

US employers added 263,000 new jobs in September, the fewest since April 2021.

Despite the lower figure, analysts said the US central bank will need to do more to slow the economy if it wants to rein in rapidly rising prices.

The dollar strengthened following the report, as investors expect interest rates to continue to rise.

This strengthening pushed the pound down to $1.11, having been above $1.12 before the jobs figures were released.

The labour market in the US is being closely watched, as the US central bank raises borrowing costs sharply.

Officials hope the higher interest rates will cool demand for big-ticket items such as homes and cars, and ease the pressures that are pushing up prices at the fastest pace since the 1980s.

They have warned that the slowdown in activity is likely to lead to some job loss, but say they hope to avoid a sharp economic downturn.

Analysts said that Friday’s report from the US Labor Department showed the jobs market remains relatively tight, as a backlog of unfilled positions pushes companies to continue to hire despite fears of wider economic slowdown.

Restaurants, bars and health care firms led the job gains last month, while the unemployment rate fell from 3.7% in August to 3.5%, returning to a 50-year low.

The average hourly wage in September was also 5% higher than a year earlier.

While that lags the inflation rate, analysts said the gains still put upward pressure on prices, especially as the pool of workers with jobs or looking for work has remained stubbornly below pre-pandemic levels.

“Although this month’s jobs report is weaker than the figures recorded last month, the labour market remains relatively strong,” said Richard Flynn, managing director at Charles Schwab UK.

“The Fed has been increasingly clear that substantial weakness in the economy may be the expense for a return to lower inflation. As rate hikes feed through to the real economy in the months ahead, the labour market may weaken further, reflecting investors’ recessionary concerns.”

Consumer spending – the main driver of the US economy – has held up in recent months, despite the spike in prices eroding purchasing power.

But anecdotal reports of job losses are rising, as firms announce job cuts or hiring freezes, especially those in the housing and tech sector. Peloton this week announced its fourth round of job cuts this year, shedding another 500 positions – or roughly 12% of its workforce.

Some retailers have also scaled back hiring plans. Walmart, for example, has said it is hiring 40,000 workers for the holiday season, after taking on 150,000 last year.

  • Hearts of Oak ‘sincerely’ apologise to fans after humiliating defeat to Real Bamako in Mali

Hearts of Oak have issued an apology to their fans following a humiliating 3-0 defeat to AS Real Bamako in the second round of the CAF Confederation Cup qualifiers in Mali on Saturday.

“We sincerely apologize for the loss. We will work extra hard to put smiles on the faces of all Phobians,” the club posted on their twitter handle.

“We are grateful to our fans who came to support us against Real Bamako. To our fans back home we say thank you as well. We never say die”.

  • Max Verstappen wins F1 title in Japan

Max Verstappen won the Formula One world title on Sunday with victory at the Japanese Grand Prix.

The Red Bull driver claimed his second consecutive drivers’ standings triumph when a five-second penalty after the race confirmed his rival Charles Leclerc had been demoted to third place.

Ferrari’s Leclerc had crossed the line in second ahead of Verstappen’s team-mate Sergio Perez, a result which would have prolonged the title race.

There had also been confusion over whether full points would be awarded after the normal race distance was not completed following a long delay due to heavy rain.

It meant several minutes passed before Verstappen – who had already conducted a post-race interview in parc ferme – was informed he had been crowned world champion.

“It’s crazy,” Verstappen told the crowd having been called back after the clarification he had indeed won the title.

“I have very mixed emotions, of course, winning the race and also, looking back now, winning the championship.

“What a year we’ve had so far. It’s been incredible, something I could never have imagined.”

Verstappen’s 2022 championship has been far more straightforward than his victory last year, when he moved ahead of Lewis Hamilton in a controversial last race of the season.

The Dutchman has already won 12 races, while his Red Bull team have won 14 of the 18 held so far.

This year there are still four races to come, with the United States Grand Prix up next on October 23.

Verstappen joins the likes of Hamilton, Michael Schumacher and Fernando Alonso in the group of drivers who have won back-to-back F1 crowns.

Red Bull are also on the brink of clinching the constructors’ championship, with that title – which they lost out on to Mercedes last year – likely to be settled in Austin.

  • Thai nursery attack: The story of the three-year-old survivor

Three-year-old Emmy was napping next to her best friend at a day-care centre in northern Thailand when the attacker broke in, armed with a gun and a knife.

The class of 11 children, all around three years old, had earlier been busy drawing and writing. At around 10:00 local time, teachers sent photo updates to all the parents of smiling, happy children.

Two hours later, at nap time, former police officer Panya Kamrab stormed the building. Witnesses said he first shot staff, including a teacher who was eight months pregnant, before forcing his way into each of the three kindergarten classrooms.

He murdered all of Emmy’s friends as they slept.

It is unclear how she survived. She was found awake, curled up next to the bodies of her classmates.

“She had no idea what was happening when she woke up,” her 59-year-old grandfather Somsak Srithong tells me from the family home.

“She thought that her friends were still asleep. A police officer covered her face with a cloth and carried her away from all the blood.”

Rescuers took Emmy to the second floor to shield her from the horror. They then combed the other two classes, desperately hoping to find others alive.

She is the only child to live through the massacre in Nong Bua Lamphu on Thursday. In total 37 people died – including the wife and stepson of the attacker – and 24 of the dead are children.

“I feel very grateful that she survived. I held her so tight when I first saw her,” says Somsak.

Emmy’s mother, 35-year-old Panompai Srithong, works in Bangkok during the week. She had been told that all of the children at the centre had died, and needed to be convinced her daughter was still alive.

“I finally got a video call with Emmy and was filled with blessed relief,” she says.

This small town is filled with grieving families, and for the first few days, Emmy’s grandparents struggled to know what to tell her.

We talk quietly as she plays with her favourite Hello Kitty wellington boots in the garden. She keeps asking after her best friend, three-year-old Pattarawut, who was also known as Taching.

They always napped together with their feet touching. She also loved the day care centre and wanted to be just like her teachers.

“Her grandmother finally told her that her school friends had all died, along with her teacher, and the day care centre is closed,” her mum says.

“She just wants to go to school every day. We have to keep telling her the school is closed down. She is too young to understand the concept of death.”

Buddhist funeral rites and prayers for the victims are taking place at several temples in the town to mark the start of three days of mourning.

The motive for the attack is not yet known, but police said Kamrab was fired from his job in June for drug use.

This small rural town in north-eastern Thailand is trying to support the anguished families in their grief. But many are also asking about the widespread availability of deadly weapons and the country’s pervasive problem with drugs.

“Parents are asking: ‘Where is a safe place for their children?’ I’m so sad and I beg that any authority would strengthen our safety,” pleads Emmy’s uncle Veerachai Srithong.
