Police manhunt suspects who attacked priests for transporting DRIP equipment near Nkwanta

The Ghana Police Service has launched a manhunt for suspects involved in the attack on three missionary Catholic priests near Nkwanta in the Oti Region.

The incident, which occurred on December 11, 2024, was triggered by accusations that the priests were transporting stolen equipment belonging to the District Road Improvement Programme (DRIP).

According to preliminary police investigations, the priests were traveling with officials from the Nkwanta South Municipal Assembly, including the Municipal Engineer, to inspect a cleared plot of land. The land had been worked on using DRIP machinery.

Along the route to Chieso, the group was confronted by some youth who accused them of theft, leading to a confrontation during which one of the priests was physically assaulted.

The injured priest was taken to a hospital, treated, and later discharged. The Police emphasized that the priests have been treated as victims throughout the investigation, and at no point were they detained.

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, has personally engaged the President of the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference, Most Rev. Matthew Kwasi Gyamfi, to assure him of a thorough investigation. The IGP also pledged the full support of the Police Service to the affected priests and vowed to bring the perpetrators to justice.

Police efforts are underway to get the perpetrators arrested to face justice, the statement from the Police Service read.

The incident has placed renewed focus on the DRIP initiative, which was launched by President Nana Akufo-Addo on July 31, 2024, at Independence Square. The programme, overseen by the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralisation, and Rural Development, seeks to improve deteriorating road conditions across all 275 constituencies.

National Security has described the initiative as critical to addressing road-related security challenges in the country. The Police have assured the public of their commitment to maintaining peace and order while investigations into the assault continue.

  • Appiah-Kubi blames Akufo-Addo, Ofori-Atta for NPP’s shocking 2024 election defeat

    Appiah-Kubi blames Akufo-Addo, Ofori-Atta for NPP’s shocking 2024 election defeat

Outgoing Member of Parliament for Asante Akim North, Andy Appiah-Kubi, has blamed President Nana Akufo-Addo’s leadership decisions for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) shocking defeat in the December 7, 2024, general elections.

The NPP suffered a heavy loss, with its Presidential Candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, conceding even before official results were declared. John Dramani Mahama, flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), secured a decisive victory, becoming President-elect and leading the NDC to an absolute majority in Parliament with over 190 seats.

Speaking on JoyNews’ Upfront, Appiah-Kubi argued that the NPP’s troubles began when President Akufo-Addo failed to heed calls from Members of Parliament to dismiss the former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta.

“The blame will go by extension because he [President Akufo-Addo] refused to listen to us. Even when we saw the reality and tried to communicate it to him, he wouldn’t accept anything of the sort,” Appiah-Kubi said.

He further criticized the President’s leadership style, describing him as “too recalcitrant” and asserting that his decisions undermined Dr. Bawumia’s chances in the presidential race.

“He [Akufo-Addo] didn’t do enough to help Dr. Bawumia because if you won’t listen to your own MPs… It was not just one person speaking. We were advocating with the support of more than 96 Members of Parliament,” he added.

Appiah-Kubi, who also lost his parliamentary seat to an independent candidate, questioned the President’s judgment and responsiveness to valid concerns. According to him, Akufo-Addo’s refusal to act on a collective resolution from MPs demonstrated a significant lapse in leadership.

“It’s not as though one person was saying something unwarranted. We had written our resolution, and because we didn’t have other opportunities, we wanted him to hear us. Yet, he refused to listen to any of us. That’s why we can blame him for this outcome,” Appiah-Kubi concluded.

  • We won’t accept Ernest Yaw Kumi as Akwatia MP-elect – NDC

We won’t accept Ernest Yaw Kumi as Akwatia MP-elect – NDC

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has rejected the declaration of Ernest Yaw Kumi of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as the Member of Parliament-elect for the Akwatia constituency in the Eastern Region.

On Thursday, December 12, the Electoral Commission (EC) moved the collation of disputed results from some constituencies in the Eastern Region to the Police Training School in Tesano, Accra, to prevent further chaos. Following the re-collation, the returning officer declared Ernest Yaw Kumi as the winner.

However, Dr. Peter Boamah Otokunor of the NDC dismissed the declaration, citing inconsistencies with the pink sheet results.

“They don’t have a pink sheet at all; they have photocopies of what is considered the pink sheet,” Dr. Otokunor told Joy News’ James Avedzi.

He added that while the NDC initially raised no objections, discrepancies later emerged between their pink sheet results and those of the NPP.

Dr. Otokunor also accused the EC of proceeding with the collation in the absence of NDC representatives. “Unfortunately for Akwatia, our people ran a bit late, and they had to continue despite our objections. I called Jean Mensa and asked her to stop the process and give us two hours to arrive at the venue, but she refused,” he claimed.

“She actually said she would engage with the Commission and get back to me. When she called back, they claimed they had finished and had declared the results,” he added.

Describing the declaration as “illegal, unfounded, and non-existent,” Dr. Otokunor insisted, “Akwatia is still standing.” He called for a “proper collation and a proper declaration” of the results.

The Akwatia constituency is one of three constituencies in the Eastern Region where results remain disputed. Dr. Otokunor expressed optimism that the NDC would secure victory in those areas.

According to available parliamentary results, the NPP has secured 77 seats, the NDC has won 185 seats, and three independent MPs-elect have been confirmed, with some results still pending due to ongoing disputes.

  • EC relocates Eastern region results collation to Police training school

EC relocates Eastern region results collation to Police training school

The Electoral Commission (EC) has relocated the process to the National Police Training School (NPTS) at Tesano in Accra.

As such, the Ghana Police Service has intensified security measures following disputes over results collation in the Eastern Region.

The collation for the four outstanding constituencies is ongoing under a fortified security presence of Police and Military personnel to ensure a smooth and secure process.

One constituency’s collation has been successfully completed, leaving three constituencies where collation is still underway.

Similar arrangements have been made in the Ashanti and Bono East Regions, with the Police awaiting confirmation from the Electoral Commission (EC) on the dates for these exercises.

The Police have assured the public that adequate security has been provided to enable EC officials to carry out their duties without obstruction.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has accused the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of deliberately delaying the collation of election results in some constituencies in the Eastern Region.

According to Afenyo-Markin, the NDC is aware they have lost parliamentary seats in the affected constituencies and are intentionally frustrating the process.

Court remands 14 for electoral violence at Damongo

A Kumasi High Court has remanded 14 individuals into prison custody over their alleged involvement in violent disturbances during Election Day in Damongo, Savannah Region.

Out of 16 suspects arraigned, 14 were remanded, while two minors were discharged and released to a responsible guardian.

The violence reportedly erupted due to delays in declaring election results, leading to the death of one person and extensive damage to the Electoral Commission’s (EC) office.

Angry protesters stormed the Damongo Municipal Collation Center and set the EC office ablaze, prompting authorities to transfer the case from the Savannah Region to the Kumasi High Court due to security concerns.

At the hearing, the State Attorney requested a deferral of pleas to allow more time for investigations, while the defence counsel argued for their clients’ release, emphasizing that two of the accused are minors.

The court ordered the release of the minors to a responsible guardian, Alhaji Imoro Seidu, who was required to leave his Ghana Card with the Court Registrar.

The remaining accused were remanded into prison custody as investigations continue. The court announced that pleas will be taken at the next hearing on December 19, 2024.

NPP’s Ernest Kumi wins Akwatia seat after dispute

The Electoral Commission (EC) has declared Ernest Kumi of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as the Member of Parliament-elect for Akwatia, following a prolonged and contentious electoral process.

The declaration took place at the National Police Training School in Tesano, Accra, after several failed attempts to finalise the results in the Eastern Region.

Ernest Kumi secured 19,269 votes, defeating the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) candidate, Henry Yiadom Boakye, who polled 17,206 votes.

The Akwatia constituency, traditionally an NPP stronghold, became a focal point of national attention during the December 7 elections due to delays, disputes, and accusations, which turned what should have been a routine process into a drawn-out affair.

Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has alleged that three key figures involved in the controversial $108 million ambulance deal have fled Ghana just days before the December 7 elections.

In a post on the X platform, Ablakwa stated, “Stephen Okereke Elendu Kalu Okoro, Frank Agyekum Boateng, and Vivian Oppong Kyekyeku — three chief architects of the infamous US$108 million Akufo-Addo daughters’ ambulance sweetheart deal have all left Ghana.”

Ablakwa’s post disclosed that “Stephen Okoro, the longtime special business partner of Gyankroma Akufo-Addo and Edwina Akufo-Addo,” flew out of the country on November 27, 2024, aboard British Airways to the UK. Ablakwa also mentioned that “Mr. Frank Agyekum Boateng” left Ghana a day earlier, on November 26, 2024, for Washington aboard a United Airlines flight. Boateng is linked to BEFT Engineering, another company associated with the ambulance deal.

  • ECG, GRIDCo announce limited load management over closure of some power plants in Tema

ECG, GRIDCo announce limited load management over closure of some power plants in Tema

The Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) have announced limited load management across parts of the country following the temporary shutdown of some thermal power plants in Tema.

The shutdown was triggered by operational issues at the Tema Regulatory and Metering Station, caused by ongoing pipeline cleaning by the West African Gas Pipeline Company (WAPCo) in Nigeria.

In a joint statement released Wednesday, GRIDCo and ECG explained that the shutdown has resulted in a shortfall in electricity generation. “This has caused a shortfall in power supply, requiring some limited load management in parts of the country,” the statement read.

The issue stems from WAPCo’s cleaning and inspection of a 56km x 30” onshore pipeline section between Itoki and Badagry in Nigeria, which forms part of the West African Gas Pipeline (WAGP). During the process, a larger-than-expected volume of liquids and debris was received at the Lagos Beach Compressor Station. This triggered operational upsets at WAPCo’s Tema facility, necessitating the temporary closure of some thermal power plants for safety and investigation.

WAPCo, in its update, noted that investigations are ongoing to resolve the challenge. “During the cleaning exercise, a larger-than-expected volume of liquids and debris was received at the Lagos Beach Compressor Station. This has triggered some operational upsets at our Tema Regulatory & Metering Station requiring a temporary shutdown for safety reasons and investigation,” the company stated.

Both GRIDCo and ECG expressed optimism that WAPCo will resolve the issue soon to allow gas supply to resume and power generation to normalize. “We are optimistic that WAPCo will soon resolve the challenge and restore gas supply,” they stated.

They assured affected customers that the situation is being monitored closely and updates will be provided as necessary. “We express our gratitude to our key stakeholders for their patience during this process and apologize for any inconvenience caused,” the statement added.

In the meantime, GRIDCo and ECG have urged customers to conserve power where possible and stay informed through official updates.

WAPCo reaffirmed its commitment to addressing the operational challenges and thanked all stakeholders for their understanding during the process.

  • Return all govt vehicles by January 2025 – Akufo-Addo orders appointees

Return all govt vehicles by January 2025 – Akufo-Addo orders appointees

President Nana Akufo-Addo has directed all outgoing Ministers, Deputy Ministers, Regional Ministers, and other political appointees to return official government vehicles by Friday, January 3, 2025, as his administration comes to an end.

The Office of the President emphasized that the longstanding directive, first issued at the end of President Akufo-Addo’s first term in 2020, “remains in full effect” as the President’s second and final term draws to a close.

Unlike past administrations that allowed political appointees to purchase one official saloon vehicle through valuation by the State Transport Company Ltd., President Akufo-Addo has reiterated that “this practice will not be applicable under his administration.”

The directive applies to all political appointees, including Ministers, Deputy Ministers, Regional Ministers, Special Assistants, Special Aides to the President and Vice President, and individuals serving as Chairpersons or Members of Statutory Boards and Corporations under the Presidential Office Act, 1993 (Act 463).

“No official vehicle shall be acquired by any appointee of the current administration as the term concludes,” the statement emphasized.

The Office of the President has instructed appointees to return all government vehicles in their possession to the Chief Directors of their respective Ministries by the stated deadline.

The directive, according to the Presidency, underscores President Akufo-Addo’s “commitment to accountability and the responsible management of state resources.”

The Office expressed confidence that all appointees will comply fully with this measure and ensure a smooth transition as the administration concludes its term.

President Akufo-Addo has pledged his commitment to ensuring a seamless transition for President-elect John Mahama as he prepares to assume office.

Speaking ahead of a meeting at the Jubilee House on Wednesday, which focused on the inauguration of a joint transitional team, President Akufo-Addo emphasized the need for a smooth process that protects the interests of Ghanaians.

The President told journalists, “to assure him of my full support and that of my government over the transitional process to make sure that this administration takes off in the best of conditions.”

President-elect John Mahama, in response, expressed his appreciation and reiterated the importance of collaboration during and beyond the transition period. “I’m happy at the assurance he has given us that we’re going to work together in the interest of Ghana to ensure a seamless transition, and I believe that even after that transition, it will be necessary for us to continue to keep a channel of communication so that Ghana’s democratic credentials are consolidated and we all work together in the national interest,” he stated.

CSOs extol National Election Security Taskforce for safeguarding peace

A delegation of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) has commended the National Election Security Taskforce and the Inspector-General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, for their efforts in maintaining peace and order during and after the 2024 General Elections.

The delegation, led by the Civil Initiative Forum (CFI), praised the security services for adopting strategic and non-violent approaches to address post-election tensions. The group included representatives from the Coalition of Domestic Election Observers (CODEO), the Centre for Democratic Development (CDD), the Chief Imam’s office, and the Catholic Bishops’ Conference.

During a meeting with the Police leadership, Reverend Dr. Fred Digby, Co-Chair of CODEO, applauded the professionalism and restraint demonstrated by the security agencies throughout the electoral process. He noted that the Police’s calm presence and measured tactics prevented widespread unrest despite isolated incidents of violence and looting.

“While some view the Police’s approach as leniency, it is, in fact, a well-calculated measure to de-escalate tensions and avoid further conflict,” Reverend Dr. Digby explained.

Dr. Mohamed Marzouk Abubakar Azandoro, who represented the Chief Imam, also lauded the Police for their transparency and level-headedness in managing public concerns. He emphasized that the Police’s methods had significantly strengthened public trust in Ghana’s security institutions.

He urged citizens to respect the rule of law, stating, “Those who engage in unlawful acts will be held accountable, but we must allow the law to take its course without resorting to violence.”

Mr. Kojo Asante of CODEO and CDD addressed the importance of adhering to constitutional processes for declaring election results. He discouraged acts such as the destruction of electoral materials, including pink sheets, stressing the need for patience as the Electoral Commission (EC) completes its mandate.

“The role of the Police in de-escalating post-election tensions has been critical. Their strategic restraint ensures peace and stability, which are necessary for democratic governance,” Mr. Asante added.

Reverend Father Michael Kweku, representing the Catholic Bishops’ Conference, urged Ghanaians to verify information before acting on it. He praised the Police for their measured responses to emerging disturbances and called on citizens to trust the legal systems in place.

“Let us allow the Electoral Commission to carry out its responsibilities without interference,” he advised.

Adjustment of IMF, World Bank deals vital in rebuilding of the economy – Mahama

President-elect John Dramani Mahama has underscored the need to review and adjust Ghana’s ongoing programmes with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank to align with the country’s current economic realities and priorities.

Speaking during a courtesy call by the United Nations Resident Coordinator, Charles Abani, Mr Mahama emphasised that these adjustments are critical to stabilising Ghana’s economy and ensuring sustainable recovery.

“Looking at the existing programmes, we need to tweak them to meet the realities of today… One of our main concerns is the issue of debt repayments. We need to see how we can smooth them so that we don’t default again, which will be more catastrophic than the current defaulting,” he stated.

Mr Mahama noted that swift engagements with international institutions like the IMF and World Bank would be a priority to realign ongoing initiatives with his incoming government’s vision.

The transition process, he explained, is grounded in Section 1 of the Presidential (Transition) Act, 2012 (Act 845), which mandates the formation of a Transition Team within 24 hours after the declaration of presidential election results. This framework ensures continuity and facilitates smooth handover between administrations, setting the stage for effective collaboration with development partners.

“This adjustment is crucial and will help put the new government that would be inaugurated next year on the same springboard with our development partners to begin the rebuilding of the economy and the country,” Mr Mahama stated.

Ghana is currently under a 36-month, $3 billion Extended Credit Facility with the IMF and has signed agreements with the World Bank, including a $250 million Ghana Financial Stability Project and another $250 million for the Ghana Energy Sector Recovery Programme. Mr Mahama stressed the urgency of managing these programmes effectively to stabilise the economy while addressing debt obligations.

“I don’t kid myself that it is going to be an easy task; it is going to be quite tough. I anticipated that we were going to win, but I didn’t anticipate the margin by which we were going to win. That is an indication that Ghanaians have very high expectations,” he added, committing to working tirelessly to meet those demands.

Highlighting the role of global partnerships, Mr Mahama lauded the United Nations and its agencies for their longstanding support to Ghana, particularly in areas like food security.

“We are anticipating that there is going to be some problems with the availability of food, and so how we are able to quicken support to ameliorate the situation is something that we would like to work on,” he remarked.

He expressed readiness to collaborate with agencies such as UNICEF and UNHCR to uplift Ghanaians from economic hardship.

Basintale blames peeved NPP foot soldiers for looting of state agencies

Deputy Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Malik Basintale, has blamed disgruntled New Patriotic Party (NPP) supporters for the recent post-election violence and looting of state properties across the country.

Speaking to Joy News, Mr. Basintale dismissed claims that the perpetrators were NDC supporters, insisting instead that the unlawful acts were carried out by aggrieved NPP foot soldiers.

“At first, many people thought that they were NDC guys who were storming these offices to cause mayhem. Yesterday [Tuesday], in the Awutu Senya West constituency, our guys had an issue with NPP thugs breaking into the Agenda 111 facility and trying to steal iron rods and other building materials. So, it took our guys to initiate a citizen’s arrest, and they handed them over to the police station,” he claimed.

Mr. Basintale further alleged that many of the individuals responsible for the disturbances have a long history of chaos under the NPP administration, particularly since 2017.

“A lot of people who are seen in town causing havoc are largely members of the New Patriotic Party. They are the same guys they used in 2017 to beat judges and destroy properties and all of that. Many of their grassroots members didn’t get anything, so now it’s time for them to ransack the offices of their superiors and also get something before they finally exit office on January 7,” he asserted.

He urged the public to remain calm, assuring that investigations are ongoing and that all perpetrators will face the full force of the law.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service has confirmed the arrest of 106 individuals in connection with the disturbances and is currently conducting investigations into their involvement.

Oppose last-minute relocation by govt – Ablakwa to Vegetable Producers and Exporters Association

Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Member of Parliament for North Tongu, has called on the leadership of the Vegetable Producers and Exporters Association of Ghana to oppose the government’s last-minute relocation attempts to Amrahia.

In a Facebook post, he urged those affected by the relocation to resist and remain steadfast, accusing the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia administration of attempting to complete a “grand loot” of state lands.

Ablakwa criticized the government for its handling of the Giffard Agric Mechanization Cantonments land, claiming that under the guise of redevelopment, President Akufo-Addo has handed over large portions of this land to political appointees, including Nana Attobrah Quaicoe and Kennedy Osei Nyarko, for 99-year leases.

He emphasized that these actions form part of a broader “state capture” agenda, alleging that agricultural lands at the El-Wak Sports Stadium were also allocated to NPP cronies at heavily discounted prices.

Ablakwa revealed that these lands, originally acquired by the state in 1936 for an aerodrome, were divided into 60 parcels and allocated without public advertisement or transparency. He claimed that officials like Quaicoe and Nyarko were beneficiaries, with leases signed by the president.

Ablakwa also noted the lack of parliamentary approval for rezoning the land and raised ethical concerns about Nyarko’s involvement due to his previous position as a Deputy Minister of Agriculture.

The lawmaker assured that a future John Mahama administration would investigate the matter and reclaim the looted lands through “Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL).”

He also reiterated his commitment to sponsoring a bill that would prevent politically exposed persons from acquiring state assets, calling for an end to the alleged looting and urging Ghanaians to vote out the current government in the 2024 elections. The ruling party has yet to respond to the accusations.

Convention center works at Trade Fair site halted since NPP lost 2024 polls – Bright Simons claims

Bright Simons, Vice President of IMANI Africa, has claimed that the convention center works at the Trade Fair site have been halted following the defeat of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2024 elections.

In a recent update, Simons criticized the management of the Trade Fair project, pointing to a lack of progress and an abandonment of works initially started ahead of the election.

Simons, who has been consistently tracking the project, shared aerial photographs and videos of the site as of this morning, revealing that no changes have occurred since his last report in July this year.

He described the hurriedly started convention center works as an “elaborate scam,” noting that they had been abandoned after the ruling party’s defeat. “No foundation earthworks were done, so they never really meant to build any structure,” he said, referring to the project as a “Potemkin village.”

He went on to provide an overview of the project’s troubled history, detailing how an optometrist and ruling party executive from North America was brought in to manage Ghana’s most important exhibition center.

However, Simons noted that despite efforts, the redevelopment plan was never created. Instead, opaque deals were struck, and after eight years, only pictures and videos of the site remain.

Simons also mentioned the failed attempt by a group of prominent Ghanaians in Europe and the US to build a science and tech park at the Trade Fair, stating that their efforts were thwarted due to the refusal to submit to the under-the-table demands of powerbrokers.

He further emphasized that the Trade Fair debacle is just one example of the many projects that the incoming government will inherit, warning that similar outcomes are likely to recur in future projects due to the persistence of dealmakers in every administration.

Simons called for “critical voices” within the ruling party to help prevent such outcomes, urging supporters of the new government to become “insider-critics” and challenge corruption. He also suggested that all contracts related to the Trade Fair project, including those granting access to land, should be leaked for public scrutiny.

Simons concluded by stating that his team would continue to monitor the situation and examine any intelligence received from whistleblowers.

A private legal practitioner, Eric Owusu Sae, has praised the Ghana Police Service for their professional handling of post-election incidents in various parts of the country.

He commended the police for exercising restraint and patience, effectively preventing tensions from escalating further.

In a Facebook post on Wednesday, Mr. Sae acknowledged the peaceful nature of the 2024 elections, noting that the country seems to be progressing despite some isolated post-election tensions.

He highlighted the police’s conduct, saying, “As expected, the 2024 elections have been peaceful and the nation appears to be moving on. I have, however, noticed isolated incidents of post-election tension in some parts of the country. It is commendable how the Ghana Police is handling these incidents.”

Mr. Sae also emphasized that, to date, there have been no reports of assaults or gunshots fired by the police, incidents that are often associated with elections in other African countries.

“So far, I’m yet to come across a report of assault on any citizen or gunshot by the Police, which incidents are associated with African elections. I expect more of such restraint and professionalism exhibited by the Police to continue as these traits are a function of a fledgling democracy,” he added.

In the aftermath of the elections, some facilities belonging to the Electoral Commission and the Ghana Police Service were vandalized by groups of individuals. As of now, 106 people have been arrested in connection with these acts of vandalism, with many undergoing legal processes for prosecution.

List of NPP bigwigs fighting 2024 poll results

Several prominent members of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) have rejected the results of the 2024 parliamentary elections after suffering unexpected defeats in their constituencies.

The elections, which saw shocking upsets, have led to mounting tensions as some NPP candidates vow to challenge the outcomes in court.

The Member of Parliament for Okaikwei Central, Patrick Yaw Boamah, who lost to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Abdulai Abu Baba Abubakar Sadiq, has declared his intention to pursue legal action.

Speaking to the media, Mr. Boamah stated, “I know I have won the election. There is no need for violent means to reclaim my seat. We are consulting with our legal team and gathering the necessary documentation to proceed.”

According to the Electoral Commission, Baba Sadiq secured 15,383 votes against Boamah’s 14,949 votes.

In Adansi Asokwa, long-serving MP K.T. Hammond has refused to concede defeat after losing his seat to the NDC’s Animli Dorgbadzi Dorani. Mr. Hammond, who has represented the constituency since 2001, polled 13,275 votes compared to Dorani’s 14,229 votes. He alleges irregularities, particularly concerning the pink sheets issued by Electoral Commission (EC) officials.

Another major loss for the NPP occurred in Dome Kwabenya, a traditional stronghold of the party. The NPP candidate, Mike Ocquaye Jnr, rejected the results, claiming that the declaration of Faustina Elikplim Akrugu of the NDC as the winner was invalid.

Mr. Ocquaye alleged that ballot papers were destroyed during the process, denying constituents the opportunity to verify the true results.

“What the Electoral Commission would use to work has been burnt, and what the NPP will use to work has been burnt. If you know you have won the election, why do you burn ballot papers for the government?” he questioned.

In Tema Central, Charles Forson of the NPP has also contested the declaration of Ebi Bright of the NDC as the winner. The EC’s official results showed that Ebi Bright garnered 18,539 votes against Forson’s 18,421 votes. Mr. Forson maintains that internal analysis of the pink sheets confirmed his victory and has threatened court action if the EC does not reverse the results.

The 2024 elections have been particularly unfavorable for the NPP, with the party yet to secure at least 100 seats in the 9th Parliament. Among the notable figures who have lost their seats are Communications and Digitization Minister Ursula Owusu-Ekuful (Ablekuma West), Interior Minister Henry Quartey (Ayawaso Central), Fisheries and Aquaculture Minister Hawa Koomson, Tourism Minister Andrew Egyapa Mercer (Sekondi), and Deputy Works and Housing Minister Prince Hamid Armah.

The defeats have sparked internal debates within the ruling party, with several bigwigs determined to challenge the results through legal means, citing irregularities and alleged foul play.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary Candidate for Dome Kwabenya, Mike Ocquaye Jnr, has rejected the results of the parliamentary election, which declared the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Faustina Elikplim Akrugu, the winner.

Addressing a press conference on Tuesday, December 10, Mr. Ocquaye claimed the declaration of the results was invalid, citing alleged irregularities. According to him, NDC supporters burned ballot papers, undermining the transparency of the election.

“…We won’t agree to the results. What the Electoral Commission would use to work has been burnt, and what the NPP will use to work has been burnt. What do you mean?

“If you know you have won the election, why do you burn ballot paper for government?” he questioned.

Mr. Ocquaye revealed that following the “illegal declaration,” he was contacted by regional officials and asked to appear at the collation centre to address the issue.

“When I got there, the district officer of Dome Kwabenya told me that the declaration has been suspended for a re-collation,” he added.

Madam Elikplim’s victory, announced on Monday night, marks a historic moment as it is the first time the NDC has won the Dome Kwabenya seat—an area traditionally considered an NPP stronghold.

Inside the collation centre, a heated standoff erupted between representatives of the NDC and the New Patriotic Party (NPP), with both parties trading accusations of undermining the will of the electorate.

Earlier, the collation was halted for the second time after results from 219 out of the 281 polling stations had been collated. The initial suspension took place on Monday, bringing the process to a standstill at its midpoint.

Former NDC Deputy General Secretary Peter Otokunor told JoyNews that EC Chairperson Jean Mensa has intervened to ensure the continuation of the process, instructing officials to return to the collation room to finalize the figures.

However, confusion continues to mar the process, as heated exchanges among party officials led to shattered louver blades at the centre. The Returning Officer and the NPP candidate are also yet to return to the collation room following the EC’s directive.

Meanwhile, a large crowd of NDC supporters remains gathered outside the collation centre, demanding the immediate announcement of the final results. Security has been tightened around the venue to maintain order as the collation process resumes.

The most recent arrests involve eight (8) suspects who were picked up for their role in the recent attack on the Metro Mass Transit workshop in Sunyani, Bono Region. According to the Police, the suspects allegedly attacked the workers and threatened them, forcing them to vacate their offices. In a swift response to the distress call from the workshop, local police rapid response teams quickly arrived on the scene and arrested the suspects.

The eight individuals are the eight individuals—Issakah Taugfic, Abudu Isaiah, Abdul Latif Mohammed, Mohammad Azandoro, Alhassan Issah, Amadu Mohammad, Abdulai Adams, and Abdulai Ibrahim. They are now in police custody and undergoing further investigation.

In a statement, the police have cautioned citizens to refrain from engaging in acts of violence, emphasizing that perpetrators will not escape the law.

“We would like to caution the public to desist from such acts of violence since the perpetrators will be arrested and taken through the due process of the law,” the statement noted.

To enhance safety and security, the police outlined key measures, including increasing visibility through joint patrols, intelligence-led operations to identify culprits, and deploying static personnel at targeted state facilities. Additionally, a special investigation team has been established to review videos, identify offenders, and ensure accountability.

The police expressed gratitude to Ghanaians for their cooperation during the electoral process and urged all stakeholders to remain calm as it takes decisive action against those engaging in criminal activities that threaten public order.

KT Hammond rejects losing Adansi Asokwa seat to NDC’s Dorgbadzi Dorani

Incumbent Member of Parliament (MP) for Adansi Asokwa, KT Hammond, has rejected the outcome of the 2024 parliamentary elections, in which he was defeated by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Animli Dorgbadzi Dorani.

Hammond, who has represented the constituency in Parliament since 2001, garnered 13,275 votes, while Dorani secured 14,229 votes, thus winning the Adansi Asokwa seat.

Despite the results, Hammond remains adamant in his refusal to concede defeat, citing discrepancies in the election process as his primary reason.

Speaking to Joy News on Monday, December 9, as the nation awaited the final presidential election results, Hammond stated, “No, I will not concede,” when asked if he was prepared to accept the loss.

Hammond’s objections are centered around alleged irregularities, particularly concerning the colours of the pink sheets issued by Electoral Commission (EC) officials after the polls. He also claimed that some ballot boxes were snatched, and others were missing.

Other prominent members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) who have lost their parliamentary seats in the 2024 elections to the NDC include Communications and Digitization Minister Ursula Owusu-Ekuful (Ablekuma West), Interior Minister Henry Quartey (Ayawaso Central), Fisheries and Aquaculture Minister Hawa Koomson, Tourism Minister Andrew Egyapa Mercer (Sekondi), and Deputy Works and Housing Minister Prince Hamid Armah.

I know I won Okaikwei Central – Patrick Boamah seeks legal redress

The Member of Parliament for Okaikwei Central, Patrick Yaw Boamah, has vowed to challenge the parliamentary election results in court, insisting he is the rightful winner.

His declaration comes after the Electoral Commission (EC) announced Abdulai Abu Baba Abubakar Sadiq of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as the winner of the highly contested seat. Baba Sadiq secured 15,383 votes, narrowly edging out Boamah, who polled 14,949 votes.

Addressing the media shortly after the results were declared on Monday, December 9, Boamah expressed dissatisfaction with the outcome, citing irregularities during the collation process and discrepancies in polling station results.

“I know I have won the election. There is no need for violent means to reclaim my seat. We are consulting with our legal team and gathering the necessary documentation to proceed,” Boamah stated, expressing confidence in the judiciary to ensure fairness.

The Okaikwei Central contest was one of the most hotly contested in the 2024 general elections, with tensions running high during the collation process.

There have been allegations of discrepancies in pink sheets and disputes over results. This caused delays in the EC’s final announcement, which ultimately favored the NDC candidate.
