It’s been 8 years of unfulfilled promises from NPP, pick Mahama – Joyce Bawah

Joyce Bawah Mogtari, Campaign Spokesperson for the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, has criticized the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for failing to deliver on its promises over the past eight years.

She is therefore urging Ghanaians to support Mahama in the upcoming election as a solution-oriented leader committed to the people.

In a post on X on Tuesday, Bawah Mogtari emphasized Mahama‘s dedication to tackling the nation’s economic challenges and improving the standard of living for all citizens.

“Dear voter, after eight years of unfulfilled promises from the NPP, we as Ghanaians surely deserve better, a leader who doesn’t just talk but delivers. And that is John Dramani Mahama. He has a track record, a visionary leader and a unifier and will work for you,” she posted.

She portrayed Mahama as a compassionate and visionary leader who has a clear plan to guide the country forward, describing him as someone deeply invested in the long-term well-being of Ghanaians.

Highlighting Mahama’s previous tenure, Bawah Mogtari pointed to his achievements in infrastructure, including improvements in education, health, roads, and public utilities, as evidence of his commitment to national progress.

With the right policies, Bawah Mogtari claimed, Mahama would stabilize the Ghanaian currency, create sustainable employment for the youth, and adeptly navigate the global economic landscape.

Mahama wanted to make Flower Pot Interchange a bridge but Akufo-Addo made it an interchange – NEIP Boss

The Chief Executive Officer of the National Entrepreneurship & Innovation Programme (NEIP), Kofi Ofosu Nkansah, has asserted that former President John Dramani Mahama’s administration intended to build a bridge at the Flower Pot location, but it was President Akufo-Addo who transformed the project into a full interchange after taking office in 2017.

Ofosu Nkansah’s comments, shared on his Facebook page on Tuesday, 12 November, challenge the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to clarify what, if any, preliminary work they had done on the project. His remarks come amidst claims by some NDC communicators that the Flower Pot Interchange was initiated under Mahama’s administration.

“NDC should show us the work they had done on the Flower Pot Interchange when we took over in 2017,” Nkansah stated.

He continued, “Fmr President Mahama wanted to construct a bridge, President Akufo-Addo made it an Interchange in 2017 and used GoG funds to start it before completing with this Exim Facility. How’s an intention to construct a bridge the same as construction of an Interchange?”

    Flower Pot Interchange being constructed

The debate around the project’s origins has gained attention as President Akufo-Addo prepares to officially open the newly constructed Flower Pot Interchange on 19 November 2024. Eugene Arhin, the Director of Communications at the Presidency, confirmed that the interchange is part of a larger motorway improvement initiative.

The new interchange is designed to alleviate congestion along a major route in Accra by incorporating a flyover that complements an existing underpass, providing a more efficient North-South transit solution for commuters in the city.

BoG suspends CBG’s foreign exchange trading licence for a month

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has announced the suspension of the Foreign Exchange Trading Licence of Consolidated Bank Ghana (CBG), effective from 26th November 2024.

The suspension, which will last for one month, was issued under section 11 (2) of the Foreign Exchange Act, 2006 (Act 723).

According to the Bank of Ghana, the suspension was enforced following multiple breaches by CBG of the foreign exchange market regulations, including the Updated Guidelines for Inward Remittance Service for Payment Service Providers, issued in November 2023. The breaches also relate to violations of the Anti-Money Laundering/Combating the Financing of Terrorism & the Proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction (AML/CFT&P) Act, as well as the Accountable Institutions Guideline, dated December 2022.

The licence will be restored after the suspension period if the Bank of Ghana is satisfied that CBG has implemented effective controls to ensure compliance with foreign exchange market regulations.

For customers, this suspension means limited access to essential foreign exchange services. During this period, CBG will not be able to handle any currency exchange transactions, including buying or selling foreign currencies. This restriction impacts customers who may need to convert their cedi accounts into foreign currencies like the dollar or pound for travel, business, or international payments.

The Bank of Ghana has entreated all foreign exchange market players to adhere strictly to forex market regulations and guidelines to maintain market stability and compliance.

Bawumia promised free dialysis treatments a prerequisite for votes – Joyce Bawah

Campaign Spokesperson and Special Aide to National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer John Dramani Mahama, Joyce Bawah Mogtari, has criticized Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s recent pledge to offer free dialysis treatment, describing it as a conditional promise aimed at winning votes.

Mogtari urged Ghanaians to choose Mahama over Dr. Bawumia, asserting that Mahama’s commitment to healthcare and his integrity make him a more reliable leader.

In a social media post on Tuesday, 12 November, Mogtari questioned why Dr. Bawumia, who has the authority as Vice President, hadn’t already implemented free dialysis treatment for renal patients if he was committed to the cause. She noted that Bawumia’s promise, set to begin on 1 December, could have been fulfilled much earlier, suggesting it as a last-minute election tactic.

Highlighting the NDC’s commitment to healthcare, Mogtari reminded voters that free dialysis treatment had already been proposed by Mahama in the NDC’s “People’s Manifesto,” a plan she believes reflects Mahama’s deep-seated commitment to addressing healthcare needs comprehensively.

“We are all prone to sharing our jaundiced partisan views on general issues without knowing that people actually see through the lens. Long before Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia promised free dialysis treatments as a prerequisite for votes, John Mahama and the NDC in the People’s Manifesto had offered a similar promise. But of course, they didn’t see or hear that either.”

Appealing directly to voters, she added, “Dear voters, between the Man currently in power and able to offer you anything you need but has refused to do so and the Man who has demonstrated over the years that he is a man who walks his talk. You have a clear choice, don’t be hoodwinked once again by lofty claims, and vote wisely,” she posted.

    https://twitter.com/joyce_bawah/status/1856232892944302227

Mogtari urged Ghanaians to consider Mahama’s track record and dedication to social welfare, framing the choice as one between a leader with longstanding commitments and one making promises in pursuit of electoral support.

Bawumia’s electric buses arrive in Ghana

The fleet of electric buses that were promised by the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has officially arrived in the country.

The new buses, designed by top electric vehicle manufacturers, are equipped with advanced technology to provide efficient, safe, and comfortable rides. Initially, they will operate in major urban centers like Accra and Kumasi, where pollution from traditional, fossil-fuel vehicles is most severe.

By reducing emissions in these high-density areas, the initiative is expected to enhance the quality of life for city residents and support Ghana’s commitment to combatting climate change.

Government officials have expressed optimism that these electric buses will offer Ghanaians a cleaner, more reliable mode of transportation. To support this transition, plans are underway to establish charging stations across the country, creating the necessary infrastructure to sustain an electric public transport system and further promote green energy solutions.

The project is anticipated to have a wider impact by encouraging private transport operators to consider eco-friendly alternatives, potentially reshaping Ghana’s entire transport sector.

Almost every household in Bawku is armed – Samson Lardy

Private legal practitioner, Samson Lardy Anyenini, has highlighted the widespread presence of firearms in Bawku, a town plagued by years of ethnic tension and chieftaincy disputes.

“We have said over and again, almost every home in Bawku has a stash of guns. How to retrieve them is the problem,” the host of JoyNews’ Newsfile, said on November 2.

His comments came as Kofi Bentil, Vice President of IMANI Africa, alleged that influential figures in Accra are funding and supplying arms to the area.

“There are big men in Accra. Put funds together, buy guns and send them there, and some of the guys here are armed,” Bentil stated.

The recent surge in violence follows the return of Alhaji Seidu Abagre, a rival chief who was exiled in February 2023 due to a disputed installation. On October 17, 2024, a High Court ruling in Kumasi annulled the warrant for Abagre’s arrest, allowing him to return on October 26. His return reignited conflict, leading to gunfire that left two dead and several others injured.

With tensions still high, a curfew from 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. has been imposed to maintain order, as the death toll from the unrest now stands at approximately 21.

Vice President of IMANI Africa, Kofi Bentil, has alleged that influential figures in Accra are pooling funds to purchase guns and supply them to people in Bawku amidst the ongoing violence.

“There are big men in Accra. Put funds together, buy guns and send them there, and some of the guys here are armed,” he said on Newsfile on November 2.

In response, Newsfile host Samson Lardy Anyenini remarked, “We have said over and again, almost every home in Bawku has a stash of guns. How to retrieve them is the problem.”

For years, Bawku in the Upper East Region, has been marred by ethnic tensions stemming from chieftaincy disputes. The violence recently escalated with the return of Alhaji Seidu Abagre, a rival chief who had been exiled in February 2023 due to his controversial installation as chief in Nalerigu.

On October 17, 2024, a High Court in Kumasi annulled the warrant for Abagre’s arrest, allowing him to return on October 26. His reappearance sparked renewed conflict, resulting in gunfire that left two dead and several others injured. Currently, tensions remain high, with a 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. curfew enforced by security forces to help restore order. It is estimated that approximately 21 people have lost their lives in the ongoing unrest.

Akufo-Addo’s statue in Western Region being guarded by police?

An X user has accused the Western Regional Police Command of tasking its officers to guard President Akufo-Addo’s statue at the Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital in Takoradi.

This allegation follows comments by some X users who are calling for the monument to be pulled down over the belief that the president is not worthy of such honour.

Engaging Accra-based Channel One news, a female resident, Abigail Kondadu noted “I am completely disappointed! I thought statues are used to honour.”

    https://twitter.com/papakwesi_jr/status/1855210517549269280

President Akufo-Addo on Wednesday, November 6 unveiled a statue of himself at the entrance of Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital in Sekondi as part of his one-day “thank you” tour of the Western Region.

Commenting on the statue’s unveiling, the Western Regional Minister, Kwabena Okyere Darko Mensah said the monument honours the President’s contributions to the region.

He highlighted key projects, including the rehabilitation of Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital, the construction of a three-tier Sinohydro interchange, and the redevelopment of the Takoradi Market Circle, all spearheaded under President Akufo-Addo’s administration.

Meanwhile, these projects remain incomplete. This information has fueled criticism against the monument.

Amid the controversy, a member of the Upper Dixcove Traditional Council, Nana Hima Dekyi XIV, has revealed that funding for President Akufo-Addo’s statue was generated through voluntary contributions made by the region’s chiefs.

In a recent interview with Accra-based TV3, he explained that the statue, erected to honor the president for his significant contributions to the region’s development, cost approximately GH₵30,000.

NPP govt helped you own largest salt concession – Gabby slams McDan for ‘failed govt policies’ comment

A member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Gabby Otchere-Darko, has called out the Chairman of the McDan Group, Dr. Daniel McKorley for stating that challenges faced by stakeholders in Ghana’s private sector are due to failed government policies.

Speaking at the Ghana CEO Presidential Gala Dinner on November 7, 2024, Dr. McKorley categorically called out government policies that have impacted entrepreneurship in the country.

“I will be very blunt, government policies have really not helped the private sector. That is where we are sitting right now, and we have to be frank about it,” Dr. McKorley stated.

“If you want to do business in Ghana, you have to be prepared. Being a Ghanaian doing business in Ghana, you have to be brave,” he stressed.

In response, Mr Otchere-Darko expressed disappointment and shock. According to him, Mr Mckorley is one of the businesses in the country that have received massive support from the incumbent government. He suggested that without the government’s help Mr McKorley would not have been successfully in owning the largest salt concession being managed by Electrochem, a subsidiary of the McDan Group, on the continent.

In a post on X platform, he wrote, “I am perplexed! This is from an entrepreneur who enjoyed the full support of govt to own the largest salt concession in Africa, with the capacity to produce some $2bn of salt annually; a project that for 45yrs various govts failed to commercialise. Aghast!”

  • Flower Pot Interchange to be made accessible to public from Nov 19

Flower Pot Interchange to be made accessible to public from Nov 19

The Flower Pot Interchange which has stalled for almost 8 years will finally be commissioned by President Akufo-Addo on November 19.

The Director of Communications at the presidency, Eugene Kofi Bentum Arhin, provided this update in a post on Facebook. Government had provided several dates for the completion of the project, however, none of the timelines provided materialised.

Minister of Roads and Highways, Mr Asenso-Boakye noted that the project stalled for some time due to the Government’s negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

The 800-metre flyover project, which commenced on March 7, 2017, starts from the Palace Mall and ends on the East Legon Boundary Road. The project includes the construction of 802 meters of dual carriageway for the viaduct with asphaltic concrete surfacing, along with 140 meters of ramp built from Shiashie onto the viaduct towards Airport Hills and 80 meters of ramp from the viaduct onto the motorway towards Tema.

Additionally, a new road has been created through the old tunnel at East Legon, and 200 meters of road have been added to connect to Cantonments from the Giffard Road Interchange. The Flowerpot roundabout and its approaches have been redesigned, and pedestrian walkways have been included on both sides of the flyover. The project also features road furniture such as streetlights, road markings, and traffic signals.

When opened, it would improve traffic connectivity between the north and south of the Motorway. It would ease movement from areas, including Cantonments and Burma Camp to East Legon, Spintex and Tema and improve the general life of the people who ply these areas.

The road network within the Municipality has deteriorated rapidly in recent years because of the reconstruction of the Beach Road, which led to the use of the inner roads to divert the traffic. These roads include Tsui Bleoo, Fertilizer, King Kotey, A Street, 3rd Avenue, Ford, and Nuumo Maashie Roads.

Government secured funding from Afrexim Bank and contracted China Railway No. 5 Engineering Gh. Ltd for a 93-month to undertake the project. Deoke Consult Ltd is the consultant for the project.

  • Inter Miami eliminated from MLS Cup playoffs

Inter Miami eliminated from MLS Cup playoffs

Inter Miami’s hopes of securing an MLS Cup title were dashed on Saturday evening as they were eliminated from the playoffs following a 3-2 defeat in the decisive third leg of their round one matchup against Atlanta United.

Despite winning the first leg, Miami’s loss in the second set up a do-or-die fixture that ultimately ended their playoff run.

The match saw plenty of action, with former Le Havre striker Jamal Thiare hitting the post in the 14th minute before Miami took the lead. Matias Rojas pounced on a rebound from a Messi shot saved by Brad Guzan, slotting in the opening goal. However, Thiare quickly turned the game around with two goals in just three minutes, one of which was a stunning strike from the edge of the box.

Miami had chances to level, with a Diego Gomez goal ruled out by VAR for offside and Messi’s effort saved by Guzan. The equalizer came in the 65th minute when Messi, surrounded by four defenders, rose to head home a goal from close range. But the decisive moment arrived in the 75th minute when Bartosz Slisz scored a header while Miami appealed for a stoppage in play due to an injured defender.

Despite pushing for another equalizer, Miami’s efforts were thwarted as Atlanta held firm to secure a stunning upset. The defeat ended Messi’s second season in the United States in disappointment, with Inter Miami’s historic season—culminating in a record 73 points—ultimately falling short in the playoffs.

Inter Miami’s head coach Tata Martino reflected on the season, acknowledging both the successes and the disappointments, while Spain legend Jordi Alba expressed frustration at the playoff format. “It was a good season, but what we wanted was to win this more,” he said.

  • We’re positioning Ghana as a model of climate-smart agriculture in Africa – Akufo-Addo

We’re positioning Ghana as a model of climate-smart agriculture in Africa – Akufo-Addo

President Akufo-Addo has affirmed Ghana’s commitment to leading the way in climate-smart agriculture on the African continent during the 40th National Farmers’ Day celebration on November 8.

Under the theme “Building Climate-Resilient Agriculture for Sustainable Food Security,” Akufo-Addo outlined measures to address the urgent threats that climate change poses to Ghana’s food security, emphasizing that the government is actively building resilience within the agricultural sector to ensure sustainability and productivity in the face of erratic weather patterns.

“Climate change is no longer a distant threat; it is a pressing reality that our farmers confront every day,” Akufo-Addo stated, emphasizing the importance of equipping farmers with innovative tools and resources.

Key initiatives include the Programme for Planting for Food and Jobs (PFJ 2.0), solar-powered boreholes to support irrigation, and the Ghana Agriculture and Agribusiness Platform (GhAAP) for real-time data access.

“By investing in water management, soil health, climate-resilient crops, and infrastructure, we are positioning Ghana as a model of climate-smart agriculture on the continent,” he declared, reaffirming the government’s vision for a thriving and sustainable agricultural sector that secures livelihoods and food supply for generations to come.

Agroforestry and reforestation efforts form part of Ghana’s broader climate-resilience strategy. Agroforestry, which integrates trees into farming landscapes, reduces soil erosion, improves soil fertility, and provides shade for crops. The Planting for Exports and Rural Development (PERD) module under PFJ 1.0 has supported the planting of tree crops such as cashew, rubber, and oil palm, contributing to both the economy and environmental stability.

  • Govt constructing 232 solar-powered boreholes to aid farm irrigation – Akufo-Addo

Govt constructing 232 solar-powered boreholes to aid farm irrigation – Akufo-Addo

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has announced that the government is constructing 232 solar-powered boreholes across Ghana to enhance farm irrigation and support sustainable agriculture.

The initiative announced last Friday during the 40th National Farmers’ Day celebration under the theme “Building Climate-Resilient Agriculture for Sustainable Food Security,” aims to address the urgent need for water management solutions as climate change threatens food security and agricultural productivity.

The solar-powered boreholes, designed to irrigate an additional 3,144 hectares, will help farmers grow crops year-round, reducing dependency on seasonal rainfall and allowing for crop diversification. “This project not only strengthens our food supply but also provides our farmers with the opportunity to diversify and stabilize their incomes,” Akufo-Addo explained.

A central part of this plan is the Programme for Planting for Food and Jobs (PFJ 2.0), which focuses on climate-resilient agriculture to stabilize food supply.

This comes at a time when the northern part of the country has been hit by a dry spell for over two months. Over 12,600 farmers have been affected, prompting government to ban the export of grains to ensure there is enough supply for the domestic demand.

Finance Minister, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam announced that the government has purchased a $1 million insurance policy to protect smallholder farmers in the northern region against future droughts. The policy will pay out $5 million in the event of a drought.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), in collaboration with the European Union (EU), is rolling out a series of interventions to address food insecurity and support agricultural recovery in six targeted districts: North East Gonja, North Gonja, Central Gonja, Bongo, Kasena Nankana West, and Bunkpurugu Nakpanduri.

Two Training of Trainers (TOT) sessions on improved grain storage technologies will be conducted to enhance the capacities of value chain actors, focusing on seed and grain producers. These trainings will provide knowledge on post-harvest handling of grains such as maize and millet, aiming to reduce food loss both at the farm and at storage centres.

Meanwhile, President Akufo-Addo has underscored the climate crisis facing Ghana’s farmers. “Climate change is no longer a distant threat; it is a pressing reality that our farmers confront every day,” he stated. The government’s response includes a series of proactive measures to equip farmers with the tools, knowledge, and resources necessary to adapt to extreme weather conditions.

Other key initiatives include the Ghana Agriculture and Agribusiness Platform (GhAAP) for real-time weather and pest updates, soil health programs, climate-resilient crop varieties, and integrated pest management. Through these efforts, Akufo-Addo reiterated the government’s commitment to positioning Ghana as a leader in climate-smart agriculture.

“By investing in water management, soil health, climate-resilient crops, and infrastructure, we are positioning Ghana as a model of climate-smart agriculture on the continent,” he declared, envisioning a resilient agricultural sector that supports the livelihoods of millions and ensures a secure future for the nation.

The French Ambassador to Ghana, Jules Armand Animbossou, has called on Ghanaians to prioritize democratic values and respect for constitutional order as the December 7, 2024, general elections approach.

Ambassador Animbossou emphasized that Ghana’s commitment to democracy serves as an example to the region and is essential for the nation’s continued stability.

The president further emphasized that any efforts to disrupt peace or undermine democracy will face legal consequences, asserting, “The sovereign will of the Ghanaian people will be upheld, and any attempts to disrupt the peace or undermine the democratic process will be met with the full weight of the law. Let there be no doubt, that our democracy will remain strong and the people’s choice will prevail.”

Napo needs to be coached on how to speak in public – Joyce Bawah

Joyce Bawah Mogtari, Special Aide to former President John Dramani Mahama, has criticized Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the running mate for the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2024 election, for his recent comments directed at Ghanaian Muslims.

Dr. Prempeh, during a campaign tour in northern Ghana, reportedly urged Muslim communities not to vote for John Mahama, suggesting that it was against Islamic principles to support a non-Muslim candidate.

Mogtari described these remarks as “unguarded,” cautioning that political discourse should be conducted without religious, ethnic, or tribal undertones that risk undermining social cohesion.

Addressing the media on the first day of Mahama’s tour in the Central Region, she said, “Let me say something about the NPP’s running mate. Mogtari expressed concern over what she sees as Dr. Prempeh’s “enormous arrogance and ignorance” since being nominated, adding, “I shudder to think what else he is going to be saying next.” She also questioned Dr. Prempeh’s suitability for high office, suggesting that his selection may have lacked thorough vetting.

“It is obvious that he has nothing to offer the NPP,” she said, stressing the importance of properly vetting candidates for significant public roles. “Since he was nominated, from the very first day, all the missteps largely tell us that he is not ready for high office,” Mogtari concluded.

  • BoG suspends Taptap Send partnerships with EPSPs, banks over illegal cedi remittance operation

BoG suspends Taptap Send partnerships with EPSPs, banks over illegal cedi remittance operation

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has issued a one-month suspension of all partnerships between Taptap Send and electronic payment service providers (EPSPs) and commercial banks in Ghana, effective November 8, 2024.

The regulatory action comes in response to Taptap Send’s operation of a cedi-denominated remittance wallet, which BoG states is in violation of section 3(1) of the Foreign Exchange Act, 2006 (Act 723), as well as sections 7(b), 7(d), and 7(e) of the Updated Guidelines for Inward Remittance Services for Payment Service Providers.

According to the Bank of Ghana, Taptap Send’s actions contravene local laws governing foreign exchange and inward remittance operations. Under section 3(1) of the Foreign Exchange Act, 2006 (Act 723), engaging in foreign exchange transactions without the necessary license is prohibited.

In addition to breaching the Foreign Exchange Act, Taptap Send is also accused of disregarding key provisions of the Updated Guidelines for Inward Remittance Services, which are intended to ensure efficient and transparent remittance practices among EPSPs and their partner banks. Specifically, paragraph 7(b) of these guidelines requires partner banks to credit the local settlement accounts of designated electronic money issuers (DEMI) or EPSPs with the cedi equivalent of inward remittances within 24 hours to ensure timely distribution to beneficiaries.

Further violations were noted in paragraphs 7(d) and 7(e) of the guidelines, which direct settlement banks to refrain from processing requests for any other purposes than payments to beneficiaries. Additionally, banks are mandated to notify BoG of any suspected breaches and to maintain stringent anti-money laundering and counter-financing of terrorism (AML/CFT) compliance protocols. According to BoG, Taptap Send’s practices raised concerns that necessitated immediate intervention.

The suspension comes with a strong warning from BoG to other institutions, indicating that further violations of remittance and foreign exchange regulations will be met with severe sanctions. The central bank emphasized its commitment to safeguarding Ghana’s financial system by strictly enforcing regulatory compliance among financial service providers.

Taptap Send, a prominent digital remittance platform with investors including Reid Hoffman, the Omidyar Network, and Helios is expected to cooperate with regulators to address these issues to restore its operational partnerships in Ghana.

Bagbin conducts school children to sing ‘It is well with my soul’

On Saturday, Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin engaged children from some private schools.

He spoke on the need for peace and unity for national development and the need for all to uphold the ideals of democracy.

Before bidding farewell, he led the children to sing “It is well with my soul” hymn penned by hymnist Horatio Spafford and composed by Philip Bliss.

Recently, the Speaker has been in the news over an impasse in parliament. This stems from the declaration of four seats vacant after their holders officially began their quest to contest in the upcoming elections as independent candidates.

This has led to a leadership crisis as both NPP Members of Parliament and NDC Members of Parliament fight for the Majority position.

NPP Caucus leader, Alexander Afenyo Markin run to the Supreme Court and secured a ruling directing the Speaker to suspend his ruling. The Speaker in turn got his lawyers to file a stay of execution on the court’s ruling but that was dismissed for lacking merit.

Despite the development, the Speaker has refused to rescind his directive.

Renowned cyclist Mark Cavendish, the most successful sprinter in cycling history, will retire tomorrow after racing in the Tour de France Criterium in Singapore.

The 39-year-old from the Isle of Man, who announced in May that this season would be his last, will bow out after a career that has seen him break the record for the most stage wins in the Tour de France with 35 victories.

Cavendish, who won the world title in 2011 and earned an omnium silver medal at the 2016 Olympics, also claimed the green jersey twice at the Tour. His illustrious career, spanning nearly 20 years, includes 165 race wins, including 17 stages in the Giro d’Italia and three in the Vuelta a España.

“I am lucky enough to have done what I love for almost 20 years and I can now say that I have achieved everything that I can on the bike,” said Cavendish, who rides for Astana-Qazaqstan. “Cycling has given me so much, and I love the sport.      26 involved in Abetifi violence remanded into police custody for 6 days

The Mpraeso District Court has remanded 26 individuals, including one female, into police custody for six days following their alleged involvement in a violent incident at the Abetifi Palace.

The suspects are set to reappear on November 14, 2024, in connection with the arrest and kidnapping of Akyemfour Asiedu Agyemang III, the Kwahu Abetifihene.

The clash, which occurred on Thursday, November 7, escalated when a group of armed men, led by Obaapanyin Yaa Asantewaa, attempted to destool Akyemfour Asiedu Agyemang III, who also serves as the acting President of the Kwahu Traditional Area.

Yaa Asantewaa, posing as the Abrewatia (chief’s wife), arrived in Abetifi with her entourage and allegedly took the acting President to a nearby older palace, where she performed traditional rites, including the ritual slaughter of a sheep, to depose him.

The attempted destoolment triggered protests from local youth, who armed themselves with machetes in response to the news. Six individuals were injured in the violence that followed.

Govt withdraws tax collectors allegedly harassing businesses – Finance Minister

Finance Minister Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam has announced that the government has withdrawn Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) officials allegedly harassing businesses as part of efforts to improve the investment climate in Ghana.

This move follows concerns raised by members of the French business community regarding undue pressure from tax collectors.

Addressing the French Chamber of Commerce at the Annual Cocktail event and the launch of the France-Ghana Economic Report 2023-2024, held at the French Ambassador’s residence in Accra, Dr. Amin Adam reassured French businesses of the government’s commitment to addressing their concerns and fostering a more favorable business environment.

“I want to appeal to you to continue to stay in Ghana because we are addressing all the issues that you have raised with me,” he said, noting that actions had been taken to withdraw GRA officials accused of harassing businesses.

“Issues relating to taxes and harassment of businesses by tax collectors, you will notice, have been resolved. We’ve had to withdraw all the tax collectors who were allegedly harassing businesses from those centres of operation, and so you won’t see them anymore,” he added.

The GRA has faced repeated criticism for what some perceive as aggressive tax collection tactics. In March, New Patriotic Party Flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia expressed concern that GRA’s high targets for tax officers lead to harassment of businesses.

“They are harassing businesses. That harassment is coming from the sort of targets that are created at their office. They are setting unrealistic targets… so you come up with all sorts of stuff,” Dr. Bawumia said.

Echoing similar sentiments, Alhassan Andani, former Chief Executive Officer of Stanbic Bank, recently likened the GRA’s approach to “a terrorist organization,” claiming the authority’s tactics often put undue pressure on businesses.

“I know a number of organizations, when GRA gets into their space, it’s as if they deliberately do it to wriggle people’s arms to take money,” he remarked.

Businesses in Ghana are currently grappling with high inflation, cedi depreciation, and multiple tax obligations, which continue to strain their operations. The GRA, tasked with ensuring compliance with tax laws, is under pressure to secure a stable revenue flow for the government amid these economic challenges.

He emphasized that measures are being taken to resolve issues affecting foreign investors.

“I want to appeal to you to continue to stay in Ghana because we are addressing all the issues that you have raised with me,” Dr. Amin Adam said.

He highlighted government action taken to withdraw GRA officials accused of harassing businesses. “Issues relating to taxes and harassment of businesses by tax collectors, you will notice, have been resolved. We’ve had to withdraw all the tax collectors who were allegedly harassing businesses from those centres of operation, and so you won’t see them anymore,” he added.

The President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, has urged governments worldwide to commit more firmly to protecting journalists and ensuring their safety.

Addressing a panel at a two-day meeting in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, held in observance of the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists, Mr. Dwumfour raised concerns about the high rate of attacks on journalists globally, including killings. He emphasized the importance of governments taking decisive action to arrest and prosecute perpetrators, aiming to curb impunity and safeguard press freedom.

The panel discussion, organized by the Federation of African Journalists (FAJ) and the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), focused on “Ensuring the safety and protection of journalists by addressing impunity: A responsibility for the world.” This year’s event, organized by UNESCO and the African Union (AU), centered on the theme “Safety of journalists in crises and emergencies.”

The GJA President, accompanied by General Secretary Kofi Yeboah, also participated in the launch of the Virtual Scroll, displaying a profile of 1,653 journalists killed worldwide between 1993 and 2023, including Ghanaian investigative journalist Ahmed Suale, whose killers remain at large since his murder in 2019.

Describing these casualties as alarming, Mr. Dwumfour advocated for severe sanctions against governments responsible for attacks on journalists. He called for leaders of such states to be held personally accountable and stressed the need for public education on the crucial role of journalists, aiming to foster greater public support for media safety.

The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has extended heartfelt gratitude to Ghanaian bondholders, citizens, and other stakeholders for their sacrifices in supporting the government’s Domestic Debt Exchange Program (DDEP).

Speaking at the Ghana CEO Presidential Gala at the Movenpick Hotel on Thursday, November 7, Dr. Bawumia commended the business community and bondholders for their pivotal role in advancing the country’s economic recovery.

“I would like to take this opportunity to show gratitude to the Ghanaian people, especially the business community and the bondholders, for the sacrifices you all made in supporting government’s efforts to restructure our debts and safeguard the economy,” he remarked.

Dr. Bawumia highlighted the impact of the debt restructuring initiative, which he said has helped stabilize Ghana’s economy amid significant challenges. He shared an optimistic outlook, noting that the restructuring efforts are laying a solid foundation for sustainable growth.

“The good news is that Ghana’s economy is on the path to recovery,” he added, underscoring the importance of collective action in building resilience.

The NPP flagbearer expressed confidence in the nation’s economic future, noting that continued cooperation among sectors would ensure Ghana emerges stronger and more resilient. Four courts closed due to Bawku conflict reopened

Four courts in the Upper East Region, previously closed due to the escalating conflict in Bawku, have been reopened on the orders of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

The courts were initially directed to shut down on October 29 after judges and court staff raised concerns about their safety.

The closure affected the High Court, Circuit Court, and District Court in Bolgatanga, as well as the District Court in Bongo. However, areas like Bolgatanga, Zuarungu, and Bongo, which are located several kilometers away from the conflict zone, voiced dissatisfaction with the directive and promptly petitioned the Chief Justice for the reopening.

In response, a circular dated November 8 and signed by Judicial Service Secretary, Justice Cyra Pamela Koranteng JA, confirmed the reopening of the courts, reversing the earlier closure notice.

After a period of relative calm, violence erupted again following the return of Alhaji Seidu Abagre, a rival chief who had been in exile since February 2023.

Abagre had previously fled Bawku due to an arrest warrant issued against him after his controversial installation as chief in Nalerigu.

However, a High Court ruling in Kumasi on October 17, 2024, annulled the warrant, enabling him to come back. His return on October 26 reignited the longstanding chieftaincy conflict, resulting in gunfire that claimed two lives and left several others injured.

The community is now grappling with heightened tensions and concerns over potential further violence.

In response to the unrest, a curfew from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm has been imposed, and security forces are actively enforcing these restrictions to help restore order.

About 21 people are believed to have been killed.

I mean business – Bawumia tells electorates

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has assured Ghanaians of his dedication to fostering business development, affirming that “Bawumia means business.”

Speaking at the Ghana CEO Presidential Gala at the Movenpick Hotel on Thursday, 7 November, Bawumia highlighted his commitment to building a thriving economy driven by resilient businesses.

Bawumia emphasized that successful national economies are built on strong business foundations, which are essential for job creation, innovation, and sustainable development. He pointed out that a robust business environment is crucial for addressing Ghana’s economic challenges and achieving lasting prosperity.

“Ladies and gentlemen, as you may all be aware, Bawumia means business! From being a banker to Vice President to Presidential candidate of the NPP, my commitment to business development has been consistent,” he said.

“The reason is simple. When businesses do well, the economy does well, and vice versa. Show me a buoyant national economy in any part of the world, and I’ll show you strong and resilient businesses behind it,” Bawumia added.

The NPP flagbearer also outlined the steps his administration has taken to support businesses, including policies aimed at boosting entrepreneurship, expanding access to credit, and advancing digitalisation. These efforts, he noted, are intended to bolster the resilience and competitiveness of Ghanaian businesses.

He closed his remarks by pledging that, if elected president, he would continue prioritizing business growth to ensure Ghana’s private sector remains dynamic, innovative, and competitive on the global stage.

Gabby digs out 1955 report to prove ‘long fight’ against galamsey

A prominent member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) – the ruling government, Gabby Otchere-Darko, has provided the public with an official report dated February 1955 to prove the long standing fight against illegal mining also known as galamsey.

Mr Otchere-Darko, despite admitting the adverse effect of galamsey on the country, has also defended the ruling party from citizens who hold the government responsible for the menace.

In a post on the X platform dated November 8, he wrote “Galamsey in 1955. It has been a long fight…” in attachment to the Legislative Assembly debate.

    https://twitter.com/GabbyDarko/status/1854897577335955769

Many Ghanaians have hurled criticism against the Akufo-Addo-led government over its failure to nib the canker in the bud. Prior to assuming office, then presidential candidate for the NPP – now president, Nana Akufo-Addo put his presidency on the line to address illegal mining activities.

Several initiatives such as halting operations of small-scale miners, Operation Halt and laws to ban mining in restricted areas were implemented, however, none of these have been able to address the underlying issues.

In recent years, Ghanaians have witnessed brutal destruction of water bodies such as Pra River, River Oti and forest reserves by audacious illegal miners. Such actions have hindered the continuous supply of water to some areas in the country and the situation could worsen should galamsey not be addressed, according to the Ghana Water Company Limited.

Amid public criticism, some Ghanaians hit the streets to protest against the government to finally take pragmatic steps to address galamsey. Some sections of the public called for the suspension of mining of small-scale miners to enable affected water bodies recover. This request has however been shot down by the government due to the economic benefits in foreign exchange that Ghana derives from gold production and exportation.

The conversation on illegal mining has been politicised to some extent, where the National Democratic Congress and the NPP debate on whose government has allowed the menace to foster. Such conversation has compelled Mr Otchere-Darko to provide evidence to prove that galamsey has been in existence for long and present and past governments have failed to address the matter.

The recent document provided by Mr Otchere-Darko hasn’t been welcomed by many who believe his submission seeks to absolve the government from blame over its failed promise to eradicate galamsey.

Some X users wrote, “Can we stop visiting the past and focus on how to fight it head on?? Bunch of clueless excusers.”

“But Galamsey operators are not mining companies? It is simply exposing the insufficient mining regulations at the time to safeguard waterbodies. Don’t be silly prime minister.”

Following backlash from the public, the government has decided to review its efforts to tackle illegal mining. Presently, all and sundry are entreated to stand united to fight illegal mining as its effects are lasting and not discriminatory.

Ancelotti reveals Mbappe is “down like everyone else”

Carlo Ancelotti has revealed that Kylian Mbappe is “down like everyone else” at Real Madrid, but the striker remains motivated to overcome his current struggles.

Mbappe, who joined Real on a free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain in July, has faced a challenging start to his career at the Bernabeu. Despite scoring eight goals in 15 appearances, the 25-year-old has only found the back of the net once in his last five games.

The team, which claimed both the Champions League and La Liga titles last season, has been in a tough period, including a heavy 4-0 defeat to rivals Barcelona last month. They currently trail the Catalans by nine points in the league standings.

“Mbappe is down like everyone else, but motivated to get through this moment,” Ancelotti said in a press conference. “The problem he’s having is everyone’s problem. You could point at Vinicius [Junior], Rodrygo or [Jude] Bellingham. It is a difficult moment for everyone.”

The Real Madrid manager also assured that Mbappe is “training well” and remains “convinced” that his form will improve as long as he maintains a positive mindset. “We haven’t hit our stride yet. You can’t let your head drop, you have to hold it high,” Ancelotti added.

Regarding Mbappe’s exclusion from France’s upcoming Nations League double-header by national team coach Didier Deschamps, Ancelotti stated that he had not discussed the matter with the player, emphasizing that it was a decision for the French coach to make.

“It’s a matter for the national team coach and I have no right to judge his decisions. He made the decision and we have to accept it,” Ancelotti explained.

  • Bawumia jabs Mahama for ‘worst economic performance’ amid economic distress

Bawumia jabs Mahama for ‘worst economic performance’ amid economic distress

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, has sharply criticized former President John Dramani Mahama’s economic record, labeling it as the weakest among the Fourth Republic’s leaders.

Speaking at the Ghana CEO Presidential Gala held at the Movenpick Hotel on Thursday, November 7, Dr. Bawumia insisted that his assessment was based on economic data rather than partisan bias.

He highlighted that under Mahama’s administration, Ghana faced considerable economic setbacks, including high inflation, sluggish growth, and increasing unemployment—issues he believes set the nation on a vulnerable path.

Dr. Bawumia noted that these indicators starkly contrast with the economic gains made under the NPP, pointing to what he considers a decisive shortfall in Mahama’s economic governance. He underscored the importance of accountable leadership and sound economic management, urging attendees to examine the measurable impacts of Mahama’s policies.

“It is important to note that notwithstanding the impact of the global economic crisis on our economy, it may come as a shock to some (including the former president himself) that when it comes to the 4th Republic, Former President Mahama has the worst economic performance of all Presidents in the Fourth Republic,” he stated. “However, he seems not to understand that and continues to talk about our economic performance as if his was better.”

Dr. Bawumia made the comment at a time when Ghana is facing economic difficulties, including high inflation, public debt, and rising costs of food and transportation—issues some Ghanaians attribute to the current government.

Nevertheless, the Vice President has expressed confidence in his ability to address these challenges should he assume the presidency, pledging to continue building on the economic progress made by the Akufo-Addo administration.

Chiefs, bishops, govt officials have all failed me in restoring my defunct businesses – Nduom

Founder and president of Group Nduom, Papa Kwesi Nduom, has revealed his deep frustration after repeated unsuccessful appeals to the Nana Addo-led administration to restore his collapsed businesses.

Mr. Nduom, whose renowned GN Bank had its license revoked by the Bank of Ghana (BoG) in 2018 as part of the government’s financial institutions reform program, explained that he has reached out to various stakeholders, including traditional leaders, bishops, and government officials, to help salvage his businesses.

Another of his ventures, Gold Coast Fund Management, was similarly affected by the reform, leading to the loss of about 6,000 direct jobs that he had created across the country.

He explained that his companies had relied on GN Bank for their financial operations, including salary payments, and the bank’s closure left funds locked up by the BoG, which, in turn, crippled his other businesses.

In a Facebook discussion titled “Disappointed but Not Discouraged,” Mr. Nduom stated that since 2018, he has taken various measures to appeal to the government for help, expressing his frustration over the lack of support.

“I have been speaking to people—chiefs, bishops, all manner of individuals, even people in this administration,” Mr. Nduom said. “I have been asking them to help, writing petitions to the Akufo-Addo administration, saying let’s come together and find a solution, with the main intent being to ensure the safety and security of customers’ funds. But unfortunately, all my efforts have been in vain.”

Mr. Nduom emphasized that his main reason for urging the restoration of GN Bank is to “get our licences back and get the business going so that the jobs will be restored, and more importantly, to secure the investment funds of our customers.” However, his attempts have thus far been fruitless, leading him to turn to the public for support.

He further explained that he is sharing his story with urgency, as he hopes that President Nana Akufo-Addo might reconsider before his administration leaves office.

Mr. Nduom has also started a weekly Facebook broadcast to engage the public on topics including Ghana’s economy and the status of his businesses, using this platform to propose economic solutions and raise awareness about his ongoing challenges.

  • Cardinal Namdini Mining Ltd commissioned to boost gold production

Cardinal Namdini Mining Ltd commissioned to boost gold production

President Nana Akufo-Addo on Friday officially inaugurated the Cardinal Namdini Mining Ltd, a mine in Talensi, Upper East Region, celebrating its first gold pour and the beginning of what is expected to be a transformative economic boost for the area and the nation.

Cardinal Namdini, now the largest single-stream mining operation in West Africa, is projected to produce 300,000 ounces of gold annually during its first three years. This new capacity further establishes Ghana as a top global gold producer and reinforces its goal of becoming a leading mining hub in Africa.

President Akufo-Addo remarked on the importance of this achievement, describing it as a step forward in realizing the vision of positioning Ghana at the center of African mining activity.

In his address, President Akufo-Addo highlighted his administration’s commitment to expanding Ghana’s resource potential, especially by enhancing the capabilities of the Ghana Geological Survey Authority (GGSA) to explore and identify new mining prospects.

“Today marks yet another significant milestone towards the realization of the vision to make Ghana the mining hub of Africa,” he said, affirming that his administration has worked to create a robust environment to attract mining investments in northern Ghana.

The Cardinal Namdini project, situated in a region historically known for small-scale mining, showcases the significant mineral wealth that exists across the northern belt of Ghana. President Akufo-Addo emphasized that such investments are not only expanding mining operations to new areas but also meeting the government’s goals of job creation and economic empowerment.

He attributed the establishment of the mine to years of exploration and development, demonstrating that mineral resources exist well beyond Ghana’s southern regions, traditionally dominated by large-scale mining. “For years, this area and several others within this northern belt have only been known for small-scale mining. Large-scale firms have largely concentrated in the south,” he noted. The President praised the mine’s strategic impact, which has prompted additional plans for a large-scale mining project in the Upper West Region.

To support such developments, the government has expanded its support for the Ghana Geological Survey Authority and established Minerals Commission offices across the northern regions. These efforts are designed to facilitate regulation and further exploration, strengthening Ghana’s capacity as a top mining destination.

Looking to the future, President Akufo-Addo announced an amendment to the Minerals Development Fund Act, which would increase GGSA’s share of mineral royalties from 8% to 13%. This change, along with a dedicated $10 million annual budget for geological research, will support exploration and increase Ghana’s potential for resource discovery.

In addition to generating local employment, the new mine is expected to bring significant infrastructure improvements, including better roads, utilities, and community facilities. The President noted that Cardinal Namdini’s commitment to build an airport in Bolgatanga will benefit both the mining operations and the broader needs of the Upper East Region. He urged the company to adhere to strict environmental standards and regulatory practices to ensure sustainable development.

Hon. Samuel A. Jinapor, Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, spoke on the government’s broader mining strategy, highlighting initiatives to attract large-scale projects across northern Ghana and the ongoing construction of Minerals Commission offices equipped with modern laboratories. He emphasized that the ministry is focused not only on increased production but also on value addition, with the establishment of gold and manganese refineries to transform raw minerals into finished products for the benefit of the Ghanaian economy.

The Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Tong Defa, expressed pride in China’s role as a strategic partner in Ghana’s mining sector. The Cardinal Namdini project, backed by a $1 billion investment, is a testament to China’s commitment to developing Ghana’s resources and supporting the country’s economic growth.

Step up and show leadership – Kufuor urges Bagbin amid parliamentary brouhaha

Former President Agyekum Kufuor has waded into conversations hovering around the brouhaha in Parliament over the Majority position in the House following the removal of four legislators following their decision to contest as independent candidates in the upcoming polls.

Speaking in an interview with Asempa FM, the former President elucidated the role of Speaker of Parliament, Kingsford Sumana Bagbin and how his leadership can resolve the impasse in Parliament which is affecting the running of the country and tarnishing the reputation of Ghana’s democracy .

“I will plead with the Speaker of Parliament to step up and show leadership. What’s happening in parliament is embarrassing. It can destroy his illustrious record,” he said.

    Vacant seat case

The Speaker’s vacant seat ruling that affected Cynthia Morrison (Agona West), Kojo Asante (Suhum), Andrew Asiamah (Fomena), and Peter Kwakye Ackah (Amenfi Central), based on his interpretation of Article 97(1)(g) of the Constitution, was contested by the NPP, particularly by the leader of the NPP Members of Parliament Alexander Afenyo-Markin.

Afenyo-Markin argued that Speaker Bagbin had overstepped his constitutional authority by declaring the seats vacant without judicial oversight, prompting him to seek the intervention of the Supreme Court.

In response to the challenge, the Supreme Court issued an interim injunction halting the Speaker’s decision until further judicial review. Speaker Bagbin has filed an application with the Supreme Court to reinstate his declaration of the seats as vacant, arguing that parliamentary decisions fall outside the jurisdiction of the judiciary. However, the Supreme Court, under Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, dismissed Bagbin’s motion.

However, Speaker Bagbin has decided to stand by his earlier ruling and has refused to reverse his declaration made on October 22 when he adjourned parliamentary sitting.

Tensions have escalated since Speaker Alban Bagbin directed members of Parliament to end recess and reconvene at the Accra International Conference Centre on Thursday, November 7, after a petition filed by the New Patriotic Party Members of Parliament in accordance with Article 112(3) of the 1992 Constitution and Order 53 of the Standing Orders of Parliament, underscoring the necessity of reconvening to tackle pressing national matters that demand immediate action.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Members of Parliament failed to show up after the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Members of Parliament occupied the Majority position, prompting the Speaker to adjourn sitting indefinitely once more.

The Speaker explained that the House could not sit for business as the Business Committee chaired by NPP Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, could not sit to have a business that would be deliberated.

“As you know, they prepare report and this report adopted by the House as business agreed by the House to transact during the course of the week. In the absence of that, there is no other authority that can put government before you which you have not adopted to transact. In view of the failure of the Business Committee to sit, as a result of the refusal of those who requested for the recall to show up, we are compelled to once again adjourn the sitting of the House,” the Speaker said.

He advised that “knowing the challenges we are facing, it is not advisable to be adjourning from day to day.” On the matter, the Leader of the National Democratic Congress, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, has accused the NPP MPs of causing financial loss to the state.

NPP MP and Trade Minister Kobina Tahir Hammond, on his part, registered his displeasure over the NDC MPs occupying the Majority side of Parliament despite the Supreme Court ruling that bars the Speaker from declaring some four seats vacant. He also announced that his side will cite the Speaker of Parliament for contempt of the court.

It is unknown whether or not the NPP Caucus will petition the Speaker to reconvene Parliament once more. However, the inefficient reconvening of the House cost taxpayers as each session costs Ghana at least GH¢1 million, according to Tamale Central MP Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed.

Equatorial Guinea’s President, Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, has dismissed Baltasar Ebang Engonga as Director General of the National Agency for Financial Investigation (ANIF) amid a scandal involving alleged misconduct and inappropriate behaviour.

Engonga’s removal, effective through Decree No. 118/2024 issued on November 4, follows accusations of “irregularities” in his duties, as well as conduct deemed unsuitable for a public official.

The investigation revealed over 400 video recordings found in Engonga’s office, reportedly involving the wives and family members of high-ranking officials, including ministers and police officers, sparking widespread public outrage.

In response, the government has mandated the installation of surveillance cameras across all state offices to monitor officials and deter misconduct. Setting up a business in Ghana isn’t for the faint-hearted – McDan

Daniel McKorley, CEO of McDan Group of Companies, has shared that launching and sustaining a business in Ghana requires extraordinary courage, as the country’s business environment provides minimal support to local entrepreneurs.

Speaking at the Ghana CEO-Presidential Summit in Accra, McKorley described the challenges he faced while building his company and emphasized the importance of resilience in the face of obstacles.

“Being a Ghanaian to do business in Ghana, you have to be brave; many times we don’t support our own,” McKorley stated. “I have tasted it, I have slept with it, and I am living with it, and it’s quite dangerous and difficult,” he said, underlining the hurdles he had to overcome.

McKorley argued that if Ghana could develop ten businesses generating around $3.2 billion annually, the nation might eliminate the need for International Monetary Fund (IMF) assistance to support its economy. He stressed that the solution lies not in political manifestos but in creating a unified national agenda for economic growth.

“If we can all work towards a single national agenda and implement a straightforward policy to build the greatest businesses in the country for the next four, five, or ten years, we have everything we need,” he asserted. McKorley suggested that Ghanaians must embrace a collective approach to achieve sustainable economic success and strengthen the nation’s industries.

Finally, he urged citizens to remain committed to supporting the country’s progress, adding, “We shouldn’t seek refuge in other countries; Ghana is our only home.”

Salifu’s son remanded again in East Legon accident case

Salifu Amoako’s 16-year-old son has been remanded again in connection with the tragic car accident in East Legon that resulted in the deaths of two young girls.

The juvenile, charged with eight counts of manslaughter, causing harm negligently, dangerous driving, and driving without a license, made his initial court appearance last Friday, where he pleaded not guilty.

The case, which has drawn significant public attention, is being held in the Family and Juvenile Court. Since juvenile cases are often closed to the public, it is unclear whether the young defendant has been placed in a correctional centre or in the care of his parents, as allowed under Section 23 of the Juvenile Justice Act, 2003 (Act 653).

This provision permits the court when bail is denied, to either remand a juvenile to a nearby remand home or commit them to the care of a family member or other responsible guardian.

The court has scheduled the case for November 13 to continue proceedings, according to reports from Graphic.com.

Assistant State Attorney Ebenezer Yaw Acquah outlined the case, highlighting how the juvenile’s family allegedly permitted him to access and drive their vehicles despite his age and lack of a valid driver’s license. According to Mr Acquah, on October 12, 2024, the family hosted a birthday party for the accused at an event centre in East Legon, where the tragic events began.

During the party, the juvenile reportedly asked Linda Bonsu Bempah, a personal assistant assigned to oversee the event, for the keys to his mother’s Jaguar F-Pace. Linda, who had been entrusted with the keys, handed them over to the boy. With a friend accompanying him, he drove the Jaguar to the A&C Mall, where other friends awaited them in two SUVs.

The three vehicles, with the juvenile leading in his mother’s car, formed a convoy and sped through East Legon. The prosecution recounted that on the Dzane-Ashie Road, the accused decided to test the speed of the Jaguar, accelerating recklessly despite the presence of other road users.

Approaching a T-junction at Mensah Wood Avenue at high speed, the accused crashed into the rear of an Acura being driven by Joseph Ackah. Ackah had just slowed down to make a turn when the collision occurred. The impact was severe, propelling both cars across the road and into a wall, damaging an ECG pole.

Both vehicles quickly caught fire. The accused and his passenger managed to escape, but those in the Acura were not as fortunate. Ackah, who was driving his employer’s daughters, one of whom was a toddler, along with two 12-year-old friends, struggled to open his door and eventually fell into the flames, where bystanders helped drag him to safety.

While volunteers rescued the toddler and her sister, they were unable to save the two 12-year-old girls as the fire intensified. The car was engulfed in flames, tragically claiming their lives.

The prosecution reported that the investigation revealed the accused had been driving recklessly and far below the standard expected of any responsible driver, endangering both vehicles and pedestrians. Under questioning, the accused admitted to taking the keys from Linda, picking up his friend, and driving to the mall.

As the case progresses, the court will determine the appropriate legal path forward for the young defendant, with further proceedings set for November 13.

Jinapor optimistic of winning Damongo seat for NPP

Minister for Lands and Natural Resources and Damongo MP, Samuel A. Jinapor, has voiced strong optimism about the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) prospects in retaining the Damongo seat in the 2024 elections, declaring the constituency a “secured” area and “world bank” for the NPP.

Addressing a large crowd of NPP supporters at a rally in the constituency on Thursday, November 7, 2024, Jinapor highlighted the transformation and development achieved under the Akufo-Addo administration, describing the area as a solid NPP stronghold. He asserted that the party’s infrastructure projects had pushed out the National Democratic Congress (NDC), ensuring the NPP’s continued dominance in both parliamentary and political elections in Damongo.

“I want to assure our incoming Vice President, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, that the Damongo constituency is secured. It is secured for the NPP in 2024, 2028, 2032, 2036, and will continue to be a stronghold of the NPP. We are building a party to be a firm base in this constituency,” he declared to the cheers of supporters.

Officially introducing Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh as the NPP’s Vice Presidential candidate, Jinapor praised his accomplishments, highlighting his role in implementing the Free SHS program and addressing Ghana’s energy challenges, describing him as a hardworking and committed leader.

Taking the stage, Dr. Opoku Prempeh underscored the historical and spiritual importance of Damongo to the NPP and Ghana’s electoral landscape, stating that a victory there would confirm NPP’s path to national success. He critiqued former President John Mahama and the NDC, claiming that Damongo saw greater progress under the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia administration than during Mahama’s tenure, despite him being from the area.

Savannah Region Minister Saeed Muhazu Jibral also listed several development projects executed by the government in Damongo, urging constituents to reward the NPP with a decisive victory.

Jordan Ayew is Black Stars’ new captain

Jordan Ayew has been named the new captain of the Black Stars for the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations Group F qualifiers against Angola and Niger, head coach Otto Addo confirmed.

This decision comes after Mohammed Kudus’ leadership in the previous double-header against Sudan, which ended in disappointing results for Ghana with a 0-0 home draw and a 2-0 away loss.

Explaining the change, Addo expressed confidence in Ayew’s experience, saying, “Jordan Ayew will captain the Black Stars in Thomas Partey’s absence, as I believe Mohammed Kudus still has a lot to learn to be a captain.” Ayew, who recently showcased his scoring abilities with a hat-trick against the Central African Republic in the World Cup qualifiers, now has the opportunity to lead Ghana toward crucial victories in the AFCON qualifiers.

The 25-man squad also features three standout home-based players: Isaac Afful (FC Samartex 1996), Razak Simpson (Nations FC), and Emmanuel Antwi (Asante Kotoko), who have impressed in the ongoing Ghana Premier League season. Antwi, a 24-year-old former Accra Great Olympics player, has played an instrumental role for the Porcupine Warriors, making nine appearances, scoring once, and earning one Man of the Match award.

Ghana must secure wins against Angola and Niger to qualify for the Morocco 2025 tournament, while also hoping that Sudan drops points in their final matches. The Black Stars are set to play Angola in Luanda on Friday, November 15, before returning to face Niger at the Accra Sports Stadium on Monday, November 18, 2024.

Akufo-Addo’s undeserving statue must be removed – Sekondi-Takoradi resident

A resident of Sekondi-Takoradi in the Western Region wants the sculpture set up in the region to honour the outgoing president, Nana Akufo-Addo removed.

Engaging Accra-based Channel One news, a female resident, Abigail Kondadu noted “I am completely disappointed! I thought statues are used to honour.”
