Media personality Kwasi Kyei Darkwah, popularly known as ‘KKD,’ has declared that Ghana lacks true leadership, claiming that the current state of affairs in the country is characterized by self-serving leaders.
He lamented that while Ghana is rich in natural resources, it suffers from ineffective leadership, which forces many talented young Ghanaians to seek menial jobs abroad.
KKD urged seasoned leaders to step aside and allow the younger and middle-aged generations to take charge. He criticized the failure of current leaders to groom successors, resulting in extended tenures in office.
He likened these leaders to selfish shepherds who exploit their own flock.
Speaking on the JoyNews AM show, KKD expressed his frustration, saying, “I see a Ghana where the shepherd is so selfish that everyday, he goes out with the sheep, he sells some of the sheep quietly and does not let the owners know. The owners are the people of Ghana.”
“The shepherds are those elected and appointed to serve and lead and who they are selling us to is foreigners who are buying everything of ours for cheap, but now they have turned away from even selling to the foreigners so that some profit would come to the country. Whatever little there is in it, they are selling the nation to themselves.”
KKD highlighted actions taken by the Nigerian president in response to unrest in Kenya, noting efforts to abolish the office of the First Lady and reduce government size. He compared Ghana to China, pointing out that while China, a much larger country, has only 20 ministers, Ghana has nearly 126 ministers, plus special assistants and advisors.
“And I ask myself, do we have a leader? No, we do not. Each one for himself, God for us all,” he concluded.
The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has revealed that ten state institutions, including the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), owe more than GH₵1 billion in taxes.
This information emerged during a session with the public accounts committee on Monday, July 29, where GRA officials highlighted the financial obligations of these entities.
Despite some institutions showing signs of potential payment, concerns were raised about financially struggling entities like the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR).
A GRA representative noted, “GACL and Graphic Corporation currently are having cash flow challenges. They’ve indicated to us that we need to give them a moratorium to be able to come back to us. So, for them, they are prepared to pay. Once their cash flow improves.”
Abena Osei Asare, the Minister of State at the Finance Ministry, addressed the issue of companies unlikely to settle their tax debts, stating, “Mr Chairman we have done this before. We brought it to parliament; we went through a process [and] brought some to parliament for parliament to write it off. If it becomes necessary after all avenues to collect these monies have failed, we will go through that process and then come to parliament for permission to do that.”
Media personality Kwasi Kyei Darkwah, popularly known as ‘KKD,’ has voiced strong criticism of Ghana’s leadership, stating that the country’s leaders are no longer selling the nation to foreigners but to themselves.
He emphasized that while Ghana is rich in natural resources, it lacks competent leaders, resulting in many talented young Ghanaians being forced to take on menial jobs abroad.
KKD called for current leaders who have served well to step aside and make way for the younger and middle-aged generations.
He pointed out that the failure of leaders to train successors has led to prolonged tenures in office, likening them to selfish shepherds who consume their own sheep.
Speaking on the JoyNews AM show, KKD illustrated his point by saying, “I see a Ghana where the shepherd is so selfish that everyday, he goes out with the sheep, he sells some of the sheep quietly and does not let the owners know. The owners are the people of Ghana.”
“The shepherds are those elected and appointed to serve and lead and who they are selling us to is foreigners who are buying everything of ours for cheap, but now they have turned away from even selling to the foreigners so that some profit would come to the country. Whatever little there is in it, they are selling the nation to themselves,” he added.
He noted that the Nigerian president, in response to unrest in Kenya, is taking steps to abolish the office of the First Lady and reduce the size of the government.
Comparing Ghana to China, KKD highlighted the disparity, noting that while China, a much larger country, has only 20 ministers, Ghana has nearly 126 ministers, along with special assistants and advisors.
“And I ask myself, do we have a leader? No, we do not. Each one for himself, God for us all,” he concluded.
A prominent figure within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Bawku Central constituency, Bakutoma Abubakar Iddi Wuni, has declared his resignation from the party to run as an independent candidate in the 2024 parliamentary election.
Announcing his decision at a press conference in Bawku on Sunday, July 28, Mr. Bakutoma expressed his disappointment with the party and the government’s handling of key concerns, particularly those related to traditional leadership.
“Over the years, I have dedicated myself to the principles and values that our party stands for: people-centred governance, development in freedom, and the rule of law,” he stated. “Unfortunately, for the past seven years and counting, it has become increasingly clear that my party does not care about the concerns of the people I want to represent.”
Mr. Bakutoma’s frustration with the NPP government’s approach to chieftaincy issues was particularly evident.
He cited the incident involving the Bolgatanga High Court’s warrant for the arrest of the Overlord of the Mamprugu traditional area, Naa Bohagu Mahami Abdulai Sheriga, on February 18, 2023.
Although the warrant was later withdrawn, he noted the absence of an official apology to the Nayiri and the Mamprugu people, calling it a significant disrespect to traditional authority.
“The NPP government’s actions in attempting to arrest the King of Mamprugu, HRM the Nayiri, have gravely deepened my discontent. Though the warrant was subsequently withdrawn, the NPP and/or government has not found it prudent to apologize to the Nayiri and Mamprugu,” he stated.
“Such actions not only undermine the dignity and reverence owed to our traditional leaders but also highlight a disregard and contempt toward the Nayiri.”
Driven by consultations with various community stakeholders, including opinion leaders, elders, and youth, Mr. Bakutoma emphasized that his decision to run as an independent candidate aims to better serve the interests of Bawku Central constituents.
“My commitment to serving my constituents and advocating for their welfare remains steadfast. I believe this is the best way to ensure that the voices of my people are heard and their needs are addressed.”
Highlighting his past contributions to the community, Mr. Bakutoma recounted numerous initiatives he spearheaded, including the provision of irrigation machines to farmers, organizing health screening programs, and sponsoring skills training for women. These efforts, he argued, demonstrate his dedication to the well-being of his community.
He also stated that his decision to go solo aims to unify the Bawku constituency beyond partisan lines. “We are one people with one common destiny. Whether you are a member or sympathizer of the NDC, NPP, or even non-political, we are one people with a common destiny. Moving forward, I am hopeful that this decision will allow for a renewed focus on the issues that matter most to our community.”
Mr. Bakutoma expressed his willingness to collaborate with any political party that aligns with the interests of Bawku Central. “My primary focus remains the well-being and progress of our constituency, and we are open to partnerships that will help us achieve our goals for a better Bawku,” he declared.
In the upcoming election, Mr. Bakutoma will face competition from the NPP parliamentary candidate for Bawku Central, Paul Alale Agobire, and the incumbent MP, Mahama Ayariga of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The High Court in Ho has dismissed a petition questioning the legitimacy of John Peter Amewu’s election as Member of Parliament for Hohoe, citing a lack of jurisdiction.
The petition, brought by five residents from the Santrofi, Akpafu, Likpe, and Lolobi (SALL) enclave—an area comprising 13 communities—argued that about 17,000 voters from this region were disenfranchised in the 2020 parliamentary elections due to the redrawing of boundaries when the Oti Region was created from the Volta Region.
These residents claimed that the exclusion of their votes left them unrepresented in the 8th Parliament and sought to nullify Amewu’s election.
At the final hearing, Amewu introduced three new issues to the case, which the opposition NDC claimed was an attempt to delay proceedings.
However, the court ruled on Monday, July 29, 2024, that the petitioners’ request effectively challenged the constitutionality of CI 128, the electoral instrument used by the EC for the 2020 parliamentary elections.

Okyenhene Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin has denounced the “Agyapadie” document, which features his image and alleges a strategy to position the Akyem people at the forefront of Ghana’s economy, as a complete fabrication designed to incite hatred against the Ofori Panin household and Okyeman.
Speaking at the Akyem Abuakwa State Council meeting over the weekend, Okyenhene urged his kinsmen and the general public to disregard the document.
“We saw this during the period of J.B Danquah and we’re seeing this now. In and around October 2016, a few months before the election, the same document known as the ‘Akyem Project’ was in circulation. Its goal was to create division between Okyeman and Asanteman to undermine Nana Akufo-Addo’s election efforts. Unfortunately for them, it came too late.”
“This diabolic plan was revised in 2019. When the Agyapa business became a political issue in 2020, the book suddenly transformed into ‘Agyapadie’,” he noted at the State Council meeting in Kyebi.
Okyenhene also refuted claims of extraordinary recent prominence for the Ofori Panin Fie, stating that the Eastern Region had more representation in former President John Agyekum Kufuor’s cabinet than under Akufo-Addo.
He suggested that the ongoing controversy is intended to stir resentment against the Akyem people.
Addressing rumors about his wealth, he humorously remarked, “The funniest of it is that I am the richest chief in Ghana. I mean how? Anyway, when anyone regards you as a rich person, you must receive it. I receive it,” he said with a smile.
He condemned the document as part of a broader scheme to create animosity towards Okyeman. Despite some Akyem natives’ significant public service careers, he highlighted that little progress has been made for Okyeman’s development.
Okyenhene called on his kinsmen to defend Okyeman against falsehoods and hate speech.
“Some people deliberately go to work just to denigrate Okyeman and make us look evil in the eyes of the public. But such people must remember that they have family too—would they be comfortable if such palpable lies were said about them and their generation?”
Founder and President of IMANI Africa, Franklin Cudjoe, has condemned the government’s management of tax revenues, asserting that the taxes collected are squandered.
In a recent interview with Citi FM on July 27, Cudjoe criticized the government’s decision to retain several taxes, including the COVID-19 levy, despite strong appeals from the business sector for tax relief.
Mr Cudjoe expressed disappointment that the government has not acted on public demands to remove certain taxes to ease the financial burden on Ghanaians.
He noted that the business community has been vocal about the negative impact of these levies, and the government’s reluctance to address these concerns demonstrates a lack of understanding of the struggles faced by ordinary citizens.
Furthermore, Cudjoe lamented the absence of significant infrastructure development despite the high tax revenues. He questioned how the substantial amounts collected are being utilized, suggesting that the current approach is ineffective.
“Look at the haemorrhage we have been experiencing in terms of the way taxes received are wasted. There’s a certain anomaly to think that it’s only the government that can deliver development to persons and individuals. I’m not too sure that we should be conceptualising the essence of government… In the face of the wanton distraction that has happened to COVID-19 money, you recall that there was a special audit done for all COVID-19 received funds,” Cudjoe said.
He further criticized the COVID-19 tax, calling the situation “unnerving” and questioning its continued necessity amid economic difficulties largely caused by mismanagement.
Cudjoe urged the government to reassess its tax policies and prioritize the welfare of Ghanaians by ensuring more effective and transparent use of tax revenues.
Okyenhene Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin has dismissed the “Agyapadie” document, which features his image and outlines a strategy purportedly to elevate the Akyem people in Ghana’s economy, as a complete fabrication aimed at inciting hatred against the Ofori Panin household and Okyeman.
The document, which has resurfaced in both traditional and social media, suggests a deliberate scheme to position Akyem people at the top of various sectors. During a recent Akyem Abuakwa State Council meeting, the Okyenhene urged his kinsmen and Ghanaians to disregard the book.
He questioned the rationale behind such a document bearing his image, questioning, “Which reasonable person in his right frame of mind hatches such an intention and documents it with his image as a cover page?”
Okyenhene noted that similar attempts have been made in the past.
“We saw this during the period of J.B Danquah and we’re seeing this now. In and around October 2016, a few months before the election, the same document known as the ‘Akyem Project’ was circulating. Its aim was to incite hatred between Okyeman and Asanteman to undermine Nana Akufo-Addo’s electoral prospects. Unfortunately for them, it came too late.”
“This diabolic plan was revised in 2019. When the Agyapa business became a political issue in 2020, the book morphed into ‘Agyapadie’,” Okyenhene added at the State Council meeting in Kyebi.
He refuted claims that the Ofori Panin Fie has recently gained prominence due to extraordinary efforts, stating that the Eastern Region had more representation in former President John Agyekum Kufuor’s cabinet than under Akufo-Addo. He suggested that the ongoing controversy is designed to foster animosity towards the Akyem people.
Okyenhene also addressed recent claims of wealth, humorously remarking, “The funniest of it is that I am the richest chief in Ghana. I mean how? Anyway, when anyone regards you as a rich person, you must receive it. I receive it,” he said with a smile.
He asserted that these schemes aim to sow discord and discredit Okyeman. Despite some prominent Akyem natives working in public service, he emphasized that little has been done to advance the development of Okyeman.
Okyenhene encouraged his kinsmen to defend Okyeman’s reputation against falsehoods and hate speech.
“Some people deliberately go to work just to denigrate Okyeman and make us look evil in the eyes of the public. But such people must remember that they have family too—would they be comfortable if such palpable lies were said about them and their generation?”
Deputy Communications Director of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Malik Basintale, has vowed that a future NDC government will ensure that all corrupt officials from the current administration face trial in 2025.
Speaking on TV3’s New Day programme in May, Basintale specifically named Charles Bissue, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary Candidate for Essikado-Ketan, as a candidate for imprisonment.
“President Mahama has stated that by this time next year, many corrupt appointees will be standing trial,” Basintale declared.
“He has repeatedly said that the president’s corrupt appointees who engage in corruption will be investigated, and I know that by next year at this time, even Mr. Charles Bissue will be under investigation,” he added.
“He is the first person to be caught on camera counting corrupt money, and all his associates will be prosecuted. So, if it is because of the prosecution of such people that you stand on a podium and say ‘we will never hand over power,’ then prepare for jail next year. Whether you like it or not, the NDC will be in power, and people like Charles Bissue will face the law and go to jail,” Basintale stated.
The NDC has been vocal about corruption allegations against the government led by Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, promising to take decisive action against those involved if they win the December 2024 elections.
During her unveiling as the NDC’s running mate, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang reiterated the party’s commitment to holding corrupt officials accountable.
“John and I have agreed that whoever has participated in the plunder of the state must be held accountable. This is not a threat; it is a promise, based on the wishes of our citizens across various political and social divides, and anchored in the principle of accountability,” she said in her inaugural address on Wednesday, April 24, 2024, at the UPSA Auditorium in Accra.
Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has extended his heartfelt thanks to Ghanaians following the successful launch of the party’s 2024 campaign.
In a press statement issued on Monday, July 29, and signed by his spokesperson, Joyce Bawah Mogtari, Mr. Mahama expressed deep appreciation for the media, security agencies, and all contributors to the event’s success.
The statement highlighted the campaign team’s gratitude for the widespread support and enthusiasm shown for their vision of a better Ghana.
“We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the chiefs and people of Ghana, Tamale, and the Northern Region, supporters, sympathisers and executives of the great National Democratic Congress (NDC), the media, security agencies, and all who contributed to the successful launch of the NDC 2024 campaign on the theme ‘Change to Reset Ghana’.”
“We are overwhelmed by the outpouring of support and enthusiasm for our vision of a better Ghana. John Dramani Mahama’s message that the youth of Ghana cannot afford to waste another four (4) years resonates deeply with all. The youth are the future of our nation, and they deserve a leader who is experienced, ready and committed to Building the Ghana We All Want Together.”
The NDC officially launched its 2024 election campaign on Saturday, July 27, at the Tamale Jubilee Park.
The event brought together key leaders and supporters, providing a platform for the party to present its vision and strategies for the upcoming polls.
During the launch, party supporters heard from various speakers about the NDC’s plans to tackle the country’s pressing issues and chart a clear path for the future.
The highlight of the event was John Mahama’s speech, where he outlined the party’s goals and appealed to the electorate for their support.
Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has honored a promise by donating a vehicle to Hilla Limann Senior High School in Gwollu, Upper West Region.
This donation was made in response to a request from the late Paramount Chief of Gwollu, Kuri-Biktie Limann IV, who had asked for the vehicle shortly before his passing.
Dr. Bawumia had made the commitment during a visit on June 29, 2024, when he attended the late chief’s funeral in Gwollu with a government delegation.
On Thursday, July 25, 2024, Dr. Bawumia officially handed over the keys to a brand-new Nissan Navarra 4WD pickup to the school authorities at the Gwollu Palace. The community warmly welcomed the gesture.
The chiefs and residents of the Sissala West District praised Dr. Bawumia for swiftly delivering on his promise.
Kuoru Osman Deiwia Nankpa III, the Paramount Chief of Pulima, expressed surprise and gratitude for the prompt fulfillment of the pledge on behalf of the Paramount Chiefs of Zini, Gwollu, and Pulima.
The 2023 Auditor General Report has disclosed that 44 Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) owe the Bulk Oil Storage and Transportation Company (BOST) a total of GH¢59.525 million in margin levies as of December 31, 2022.
The report recommends that BOST management take immediate steps, including legal action, to recover the outstanding amount and provide evidence of recovery to the audit team for verification.
In a separate finding, the report revealed irregularities in procurement transactions, where BOST procured goods and services worth GH¢886,771 from five different suppliers/service providers using Tax Clearance Certificates (TCCs) with identical serial numbers. These certificates were issued from four different Taxpayer Service Centres, all bearing the same serial number but with different issuing dates.
The Auditor General has advised BOST management to investigate this irregularity and report any companies found culpable to the Public Procurement Authority and the Ghana Revenue Authority. The report further recommends applying sanctions under Section 92 of the Public Procurement Act, 2003 (Act 663), as amended, to the officers whose negligence led to this infraction.
Additionally, the report noted that BOST paid GH¢1,049 million for goods and services, including a VAT component of GH¢146,799. However, it was found that the VAT invoices for these transactions were all issued from the same VAT invoice booklet.
The Auditor General has recommended that BOST management ensure that the suppliers/service providers provide evidence of VAT payment amounting to GH¢146,799 to the Ghana Revenue Authority. If the suppliers fail to do so, the amount should be recovered from them and paid to the GRA.
The 2023 Auditor General Report has called on the Bank of Ghana to recover GH¢8.241 billion owed by the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD).
The report highlights that COCOBOD has repeatedly defaulted on loans provided by the Bank of Ghana, resulting in an outstanding principal amount of GH¢8.241 billion as of December 31, 2022.
The Auditor General has recommended that the Central Bank establish policies to mitigate its exposure to quasi-government entities and ensure clear repayment plans are in place for loans.
Furthermore, the report urges the Bank of Ghana to formalize its “Gold Purchase Programme” agreement with the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC). The Central Bank had engaged PMMC to handle gold purchases and sales on its behalf.
However, the Auditor General found that a formal agreement for these transactions was missing.
“As a result, we could not confirm salient terms of the engagement including fees or commissions paid to PMMC for their services. Transactional relationships of this nature must be formalized with an agreement,” the report emphasized.
Media personality Kofi Okyere Darko (KOD) has voiced his belief that John Mahama’s 24-hour economy plan will create decent jobs for Ghanaian youth across various sectors.
Speaking at the National Democratic Congress (NDC) campaign launch in Tamale, Northern Region, KOD endorsed Mahama, praising his leadership, vision, and commitment to the country’s young people.
He underscored the urgent necessity for a change in government to tackle the nation’s issues.
”Today, I stand in front of you with strong confidence that we may need that change, but we will get it. And that’s why I stand here today to endorse His Excellency John Dramani Mahama as the next President of the Republic of Ghana,” KOD declared.
Recalling Mahama’s political journey, he added, “before the turn of the last millennium, we saw him in 1996, serving his people in Bole Bamboi, I endorse President Mahama because he embodies the leadership and vision our country needs at this crucial time in our history,
KOD also lauded Mahama’s focus on youth and job creation, emphasizing his comprehensive economic strategies.
He encouraged young people to engage actively in the electoral process, highlighting their crucial role in shaping the nation’s future.
“I am confident that the John Mahama 24-hour economy will create decent jobs for the youth in all sectors, including the creative arts and hospitality industries. Even exciting is his promise to train one million Ghanaian youth and invest three million in ICT to create 300,000 more jobs,” he added.
KOD concluded by addressing the youth directly, “Is this the life you want? Reach out to your friends, everyone above 18, and turn out in numbers on December 7th to vote. Your participation is key to elevating this country to the next level.”
A fuel tanker on Sunday evening, July 28, overturned on the Cape Coast-Takoradi highway, approximately 100 meters before the UCC east gate, resulting in a fuel spill across the roadway.
The cause of the tanker’s pod tipping over remains unknown.
The spilled fuel rendered the affected section of the highway slippery, endangering both pedestrians and motorists.
Some individuals were observed risking their safety by collecting the spilled fuel in containers.
Emergency services swiftly arrived at the scene.
Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) and the Ghana Police Service were present to avert any potential disasters.
Police redirected traffic away from the spill area to prevent additional accidents.
If I were to ask the average Ghanaian man which part of his body he would choose to save in a life-threatening situation, my best guess would be the penis.
Given that the male reproductive organ is crucial for human reproduction and continuity, it is understandable why many men, both locally and globally, prioritize protecting this vital asset.
While the penis is undeniably important, one aspect that seems to garner even more attention is its size.
Over the past decade, observations—both intentional and unintentional—have led me to the conclusion that men have long prided themselves on how well-endowed they are.
In an all-male Senior High School setting, discussions about the penis were among the most frequent topics, alongside girls and sex—not mutually exclusive issues.
You might argue that this focus was due to the all-boys environment, but I beg to differ. The underlying belief was that a man’s worth was linked to his ability to provide “good sex,” which many believed was dependent on penis size.
In the near future, we will examine expert opinions on the role of size in sexual satisfaction.
Reflecting on my high school days, I remember how young boys were preoccupied with the size of their penises. The frequency of debates about who was better endowed was astonishing. Knowing the size of one’s penis was as crucial as knowing one’s age. Any measure of size was referenced in discussions about girls and sex.
Those who were well-endowed took pride in showing off, while those who felt less endowed either exaggerated their size, claimed to be “growers,” or told the truth.
The message being communicated seemed to be that a man’s worth was determined by the size of his penis. To validate one’s manhood, one needed to deliver exceptional pleasure, thereby boosting his ego.
My experiences at the tertiary level echoed similar sentiments.
Living in a communal bathroom for a year, I struggled with the lack of privacy initially. Unlike my reserved nature, which was often mistaken for affluence, I had to adapt to sharing the bathroom with about 12 boys. I quickly learned the best times and places for privacy.
In that large bathroom, boys from all walks of life – colour, shape and size could be found. A prim and proper me just rushed in, finished my business and walked out. But the care-free ones did not mind walking about naked and displaying their God given talent.
Reflecting on this, I noticed that those with smaller penises were less concerned about showing off. They didn’t seem to link their masculinity with their size.
Yet, comments from three roommates in a more upgraded residence with an in-built washroom reinforced the idea that manliness was tied to size. Remarks like “You are a man” from a roommate to another, accompanied by taunts when we got out of bed confirmed this belief.
I believe that manliness encompasses much more than penis size. While the penis is a primary characteristic of a man (or male), true manliness involves responsibilities to oneself and one’s surroundings.
Unfortunately, many young men today still prioritize size over other qualities. This obsession has led some to resort to unapproved methods like pills or creams to enlarge their penises, risking their health.
The societal perception of manliness based on size is not inherent but a result of societal influence. Interviews conducted reveal that many people prefer well-endowed men, based on personal experience or hearsay.
Our reporter Afia Tagor is on a mission to discover why penis enlargement medicines and aphrodisiacs are so common in Ghana.
Preferences are valid, but it’s crucial to express them respectfully, without belittling those who may not fit one’s ideal.
Health experts confirm that size is not the only factor in sexual satisfaction. Skill and maneuvering can make a sexual experience memorable, regardless of size.
This article aims to shed light on men’s mental health. Embracing oneself is crucial for building self-confidence and presenting the best version of oneself. Regardless of size, every man is “man enough,” and indeed, all sizes matter.
Below is a video of a group of men asked about the size of their penis and they share more than a number.

The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has strongly criticized Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for seeking to extend the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 8-year governance.
During the NDC’s campaign launch in Tamale on Saturday, July 27, Mahama argued that Ghana’s youth cannot afford to spend another four years under the New Patriotic Party’s government through Dr. Bawumia’s unproven leadership.
Mahama emphasized the need for experienced and effective leadership to generate opportunities and spur national development.
He condemned Dr. Bawumia’s involvement in the current administration, which he accused of economic mismanagement. According to Mahama, the economic hardships Ghanaians are experiencing stem from poor leadership and decision-making by the current government.
The former President asserted that Dr. Bawumia’s track record does not justify giving him a chance to lead the country. He called on the electorate to evaluate the candidates’ past performances and make a well-informed decision for the nation’s benefit.
“The youth of this country don’t have four years to waste. The youth of this country are in a hurry to create the opportunities that will make them live a dignified life. They are not going to try somebody and four years take him off. The youth want an experienced hand,” he declared.
Mahama emphasized that the youth are seeking experienced leadership to create real opportunities for them, suggesting his own leadership would be more beneficial for the country’s future. He urged Ghanaians to change direction on December 7 and avoid repeating past mistakes.
“On December 7, Ghana must change course, we cannot solve the crisis in which we are with the same people who caused the problem. Several years ago, somebody [President Akufo-Addo] came and said try me, the result is what we’re seeing today. Today, another person [Dr Bawumia] has come and he’s also saying try me.
“And he’s saying the same things the one who has put us in this ditch said eight years ago. And what they are saying is that if they don’t deliver after four years, change me.”
The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has sharply criticized Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s bid for the presidency in the 2024 general elections.
During the launch of the NDC’s campaign on Saturday, July 27, in Tamale, Mahama argued that Ghana’s youth cannot afford to risk another four years on Dr. Bawumia’s untested leadership.
Mahama highlighted the need for experienced and effective leadership to create opportunities and drive national development.
He criticized Dr. Bawumia for his role in the current administration, which he blamed for mismanaging the economy. Mahama attributed the economic challenges faced by Ghanaians to poor leadership and decision-making under the current government.
The former President argued that Dr. Bawumia’s performance thus far does not merit an opportunity to lead the country.
He urged voters to scrutinize the track records of the candidates and make an informed decision that would benefit the nation.
Mahama stressed that the youth are demanding experienced leadership to create real opportunities for them, suggesting that his own leadership would better serve the country’s future. He urged Ghanaians to change course on December 7 and avoid repeating past mistakes.
“The youth of this country don’t have four years to waste. The youth of this country are in a hurry to create the opportunities that will make them live a dignified life. They are not going to try somebody and four years take him off. The youth want an experienced hand,” he stated.
Kofi Okyere Darko, widely known as KOD, has officially thrown his support behind the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama.
Speaking at the NDC’s campaign launch in Tamale on July 27, the Ghanaian broadcaster and fashion designer described Mahama as the revitalizing change Ghanaians have been eagerly awaiting.
“Today, I stand in front of you as Ghanaians with the strong conviction that we need that change that we have been yearning for, and that is why I stand today to endorse His Excellency John Dramani Mahama as the next President of the Republic of Ghana,” he declared.
KOD praised Mahama as a visionary leader capable of propelling Ghana to new heights. He highlighted Mahama’s policies as commendable and reflective of the solutions needed to address the country’s issues.
He also urged the youth to rally behind Mahama, citing the widespread discontent and burden felt across the nation.
In September 2023, KOD announced his intention to vote for the NDC in the upcoming 2024 general election. Previously a supporter of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), he had actively campaigned for the party in 2007 and 2015.
However, he expressed disappointment in the NPP’s failure to fulfill their promises, leading to his shift in support to Mahama and the NDC.
John Dramani Mahama, the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) flagbearer, has urged party members to stay vigilant and ensure that every ballot is counted by the Electoral Commission (EC) during the 2024 general elections.
He said this at the launch of the National Democratic Congress campaign in Tamale on Saturday, July 27, 2024.
Mahama emphasized the necessity for supporters to safeguard the ballot boxes throughout Election Day.
Addressing the gathering, Mahama stressed the significance of overseeing every step of the electoral process to prevent any attempts of rigging that might favor the New Patriotic Party (NPP). He assured Ghanaians that a massive turnout in his favor would be matched by the party’s commitment to securing their votes.
Highlighting the measures the NDC has put in place, Mahama expressed confidence that the party is well-prepared to ensure the genuine will of the people is reflected in the election results. He urged NDC supporters to actively protect each vote to guarantee a fair election.
“Prepare yourselves; we’re not going to rest for 48 hours until every single ballot is counted. We will protect every single vote,” Mahama declared. He also noted, “Despite our past issues with the Electoral Commission, we are ready to give them the benefit of the doubt.”
In addition to Mahama’s call to action, the NDC campaign launch featured several key figures within the party.
The event showcased a united front, with speeches from party executives and endorsements from prominent NDC members.
The launch also outlined the party’s strategic plans and policy proposals aimed at addressing Ghana’s current challenges, including economic recovery, job creation, and social welfare improvements.

He passionately urged voters to grant the NDC another opportunity to amend the missteps of the NPP, promising that his team, equipped with experience and resolve, would restore the country’s economy.
The event’s atmosphere was further enlivened by performances from artists like Sherifa Guru, whose music kept the crowd dancing and celebrating.
The NDC also made a significant announcement: their manifesto, outlining comprehensive economic initiatives, will be launched by the end of August in the Central Region. This document is anticipated to provide a clear vision for the party’s plans to advance the nation.

Present at the campaign launch were several key figures of the NDC, including the party’s Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia, General Secretary Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, MP for Tamale South Haruna Iddrisu, media personality and fashion icon Kofi Okyere Darko (KOD), National Youth Organiser George Opare Addo, and Communication Officer Sammy Gyamfi.
Former President and NDC flagbearer, John Mahama, delivered a scathing critique of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) government, accusing it of worsening the hardships faced by Ghanaians and failing to develop the economy effectively.
He labeled the current administration under President Akufo-Addo as “useless” and accused the president of dishonesty towards the Ghanaian people.
Mahama urged voters to grant the NDC another opportunity to correct the missteps of the NPP government. Acknowledging that his previous administration was not flawless, Mahama promised that he and his “capable men and women” would learn from past mistakes and work to restore the country’s economy.
The running mate to John Mahama, Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, also addressed the crowd, highlighting the party’s initiatives for Ghanaians, especially women. She announced the introduction of a financial establishment to provide training and funds for female entrepreneurs.
Additionally, NDC Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia called on President Akufo-Addo to ensure that the upcoming elections are conducted in a peaceful, fair, and transparent manner.
The thousands of supporters in attendance cheered and danced to performances by artists such as Sherifa Guru and others, adding to the festive atmosphere.
The party also announced that it will unveil its manifesto by the end of August. This manifesto, which outlines various economic initiatives aimed at advancing the nation, will be launched in the Central Region.
The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has indicated that its manifesto that highlights the party’s various initiatives for the country’s economy to spur progress will be launched by end of August.
According to the party, the venue of the launch of the manifesto next month will be the Central Region.
The opposition party seeking to capture power come 2024 elections revealed this on Saturday, July 27, when it officially launched its campaign at Tamale in the Northern Region.
At the event with saw about thousands of supporters, the flagbearer of the NDC, former President John Mahama, berated the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) government for worsening the plight of Ghanaians and doing close to nothing to develop the economy.
He described the incumbent administration led by President Akufo-Addo as “useless” and further chided the president for being dishonest with the Ghanaian populace.
Mr Mahama therefore entreated electorates to give the NDC another chance to rectify the wrongs made by the NPP government.
He admitted that his previous government was not perfect, but assured that he, together with his “capable men and women”, will learn from their mistakes and salvage the country’s economy.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of the NDC, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has entreated President Akufo-Addo to ensure the country’s next polls is peaceful, fair and transparent.

The Ghana Police Service has requested a court injunction to halt the Gen-Z demonstration slated for July 31 to August 6, 2024, which aims to mobilize over 2 million young people in Accra.
The planned seven-day protest is set to address significant economic challenges facing the youth, including issues like drug addiction, risky migrations, and recruitment into extremist groups. Additionally, protesters plan to challenge the government’s heavy taxation policies, such as the contentious betting tax, COVID-19 tax, sanitation tax, and increased data charges.
The demonstration also seeks to voice strong opposition to perceived corruption and nepotism within the current administration.
The court is expected to review the injunction request on Tuesday, July 30, 2024.
In response to the injunction, the protest organizers have vowed to uphold their right to demonstrate, referencing constitutional protections for freedom of assembly. They are inspired by recent large-scale youth protests in Kenya that led to significant policy shifts by the President.
Vice President and the 2024 presidential candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has asserted that the success of the Free Senior High School (SHS) program in Ghana, particularly in the northern regions, would not have been realized if former President John Mahama had remained in office.
Speaking at a rally in Jirapa during his campaign tour of the Upper West Region, Dr. Bawumia emphasized the transformative effect the Free SHS initiative has had on many families in the north since its launch in 2017.
He criticized former President Mahama for opposing the program despite his experience and suggested that Mahama’s lack of support showed a disconnect from the needs of the people.
Dr. Bawumia challenged Mahama’s record on social interventions, stating, “Former President Mahama said if he had the money, he wouldn’t use it for free SHS education. He said it was not a priority but we have brought it and the people of the north and Ghanaians are benefiting.”
He highlighted the significant increase in senior high school enrollment from 800,000 to 1.4 million over seven years, underscoring the demand for the Free SHS program.
“We knew, and I knew that where we had the poorest people in the north, we needed Free SHS education and we brought free SHS to the north and Ghana and our children are attending in their numbers. The total enrollment for senior high school has increased from 800,000 to 1.4 million in 7 years. It tells you that our people were dying for free SHS education.”
“Today, the five northern regions have the highest enrollment into senior high school education. But this is what John Mahama said we should not do. He said if he had the money, he would not do it,” he added.
Additionally, Dr. Bawumia criticized the Savannah Development Authority (SADA) established under Mahama’s administration, accusing it of being ineffective.
“Mahama set up SADA and claimed to invest millions, but there are no tangible results. I’ve challenged him to present any successful SADA project, but none have been shown.”
In contrast, Dr. Bawumia defended his record as Vice President, claiming that he has spearheaded numerous policies and development projects that have visibly improved conditions in the north and across Ghana.
Deputy Commissioner in charge of Operations at the Electoral Commission (EC), Samuel Tettey, has reassured political parties and potential presidential candidates that sufficient time will be allocated for those seeking to run for the presidency.
This move aims to prevent the disqualification of aspirants due to time constraints, a situation that occurred in 2020 when five presidential hopefuls were disqualified.
During a stakeholder forum organized by the National Peace Council to promote peaceful elections in 2024, Mr Tettey emphasized this commitment.
“We are extending the days of nomination so that if there are certain challenges on the nomination forms of a particular candidate we would be able to resolve that before we put them on the ballot papers,” he stated.
He further highlighted that the Commission has already secured approximately 90% of the necessary election materials for the 2024 elections. The only remaining task is the printing of ballot papers, which will commence after the nominations have been received.
Mr Tettey underscored the importance of transparency in the electoral process, noting that all stages of the Commission’s procedures must be carefully observed.
“The processes are so transparent and at every stage of the process if you have a challenge there is an appropriate end you can put it through,” he affirmed.
The Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) has urged President Akufo-Addo to address his reservations regarding the Anti-Witchcraft Bill and to provide his approval.
The Anti-Witchcraft Bill, officially referred to as the Criminal Offences (Amendment) Bill, 2023, represents a significant legislative step in Ghana.
This bill aims to amend the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Acts 29) to criminalize witch doctoring and witch finding. It also prohibits the act of declaring, accusing, naming, or branding someone as a witch.
Proposed by Francis-Xavier Sosu, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) MP for Madina, along with other NDC legislators, the bill was approved by Parliament on July 28, 2023.
It is seen as a crucial initiative to address the dangers associated with witchcraft accusations and to protect vulnerable individuals from such practices.
CHRAJ has called on President Akufo-Addo to “take urgent steps including legislative steps that will resolve any constitutional concerns raised by H.E the President in order to assent to the Criminal Offences Amendment Bill 2023 (Anti-Witchcraft Bill) to further enhance the protection of this vulnerable group and the consolidation of Ghana’s human rights record.”
The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has justified its decision to proceed with the construction of its new head office, even as it reported a substantial loss of 10.50 billion cedis for the year 2023.
Despite the financial setback, the Central Bank allocated $82 million to contractors for the project over the past year.
The ongoing construction has drawn criticism, particularly from MP Yusif Suleman, who questioned the project’s feasibility in light of the bank’s financial difficulties. Suleman raised these concerns during a Public Accounts Committee hearing on Friday.
In response, Stephen Opasa, Special Advisor to the BoG Governor, defended the bank’s stance, explaining that halting the construction would have been impractical and costly. He noted that the project’s advanced stage and ongoing contractor engagements made it inefficient to pause.
Opasa acknowledged the MP’s concerns but argued that the losses incurred by the BoG in 2023 and 2022 were due to factors beyond the construction project.
He elaborated, “I hear you that maybe we could have stopped that project to reduce the losses, but contractors were still on site and all that and therefore stopping that I am not sure whether it would have been the best decision”
He compared the situation to a personal project, stating, “Maybe if it was your house, you could have stopped and when things got better, you continued, but contractors were on site. This is a project that was way advanced.”
As the Bank of Ghana continues its construction efforts, it is also seeking government assistance to bolster its capital and support its policy goals.
The Ada Traditional Council (ATC) has decided to lift the ban that had previously barred Radio Ada from covering the Asafotufiami Festival, a key event in the Ada Traditional Area’s cultural calendar.
The announcement was made by Nene Agudey Obichere III, the ATC spokesperson and chairman of the Asafotufiami Festival Planning Committee, during a meeting held on July 22, 2024. This decision marks the end of a two-year exclusion that began in 2022.
Radio Ada’s coverage ban was implemented after the station reported on the controversial salt mining concession awarded to Electrochem Ghana Limited, a subject that remains under legal scrutiny.
This ban not only restricted Radio Ada from covering the festival but also led to an incident on January 13, 2022, where armed individuals attacked the station’s premises, assaulting staff and damaging equipment.
Nene Obichere III described the lifting of the ban as a gesture of reconciliation, aligned with the festival’s spirit of unity and healing. “Things cannot go on forever,” he remarked. “Radio Ada is back, and we are pleased with their return. It was never our intention to maintain the ban indefinitely.”
The meeting also included four prominent traditional priests who had previously abstained from participating in the festival due to their opposition to the Electrochem lease. These priests, who play a significant role in festival rituals, had joined forces with critics of the lease agreement. Their absence had further fueled tensions surrounding the festival.
Radio Ada has responded positively to the council’s decision. Gideon Amanor Dzeagu, the station’s Programme Officer, expressed appreciation for the move and reaffirmed the station’s dedication to community service and its role as a watchdog, as guaranteed by Ghana’s 1992 constitution. “We are prepared to mend any misunderstandings and continue serving our community as before,” Dzeagu said.
The Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) has welcomed the council’s decision, seeing it as a step towards renewed cooperation between the station and traditional authorities. Muheeb Saeed, MFWA’s Manager for Freedom of Expression, hoped this would pave the way for future collaboration that benefits the local area.
Market woman Dzigbordi Osabutey, a loyal listener of Radio Ada, also expressed joy over the news. She emphasized that the station’s presence is crucial for the festival’s success, noting that without Radio Ada, the community would be deprived of vital information and coverage.
The Asafotufiami Festival is an important cultural celebration in the Ada Traditional Area, commemorating historic battles and welcoming members of the Ada diaspora. Radio Ada has been a significant broadcaster of the festival’s events since its establishment in 1998, making its exclusion in 2022 a notable loss.
In August 2022, it was reported that Radio Ada was excluded from covering the festival due to alleged use of “unrefined language” in their reports.
The Ghana Journalists Association, along with other media advocacy groups, criticized the ATC’s decision as an infringement on media freedom, leading to further scrutiny and subsequent resolution of the issue.
Renowned Ghanaian musician Stonebwoy has graduated from the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA).
After a three-year program, Stonebwoy, who initially paused his education to focus on his music career, completed his studies and participated in the graduation ceremony at GIMPA on July 26.
Stonebwoy, whose real name is Livingstone Etse Satekla, made a return to academia in 2021.
While administering his oath as an alumnus of the school, the unexpected happened. The artiste passed a comment that has left many perplexed.
He made a statement mocking an individual known to him alone for failing to bag a degree at the university.
“Have you been an alumnus before? John,” he remarked briefly.
Many users on social media believe this comment was made in mockery of an individual asserted to be his archnemeses, Shatta Wale.
A user wrote, “Don’t you think Shatta also have a degree?”. Another said, “Shatta Wale go take do music.”
The two artistes have not seen eye to eye for a long time. Although Stonebwoy says he has nothing against Shatta Wale, Shatta has expressed his resentment towards Stonebwoy on several occasions.
Ranking Member on the Finance Committee, Isaac Adongo, has condemned the government’s attempts to blame the current economic woes on the COVID-19 pandemic.
He says that fiscal mismanagement was evident long before the health crisis began.
During the 2024 Mid-Year Budget Review presentation by the Finance Minister, Isaac Adongo voiced the Minority’s concerns.
He argued that the government should not use the pandemic as a scapegoat for its economic mismanagement.
“Even before COVID-19, the government of the day had already plunged this country into a serious fiscal quagmire. We were expected to record changes in our net international reserves. Mr. Speaker, we missed it in March and June and we’re looking at September 2024,” Adongo stated.
Highlighting that the economic troubles were evident well before the pandemic, Adongo pointed to a statement from the Bank of Ghana: “The government has been on our case that it is because of COVID-19 that we’re in this situation. However, the Bank of Ghana issued a statement indicating that at the time we exited the program in May 2019, the government of Ghana, five months later, was struggling with major concerns within the fiscal environment.”
Adongo firmly stated, “It is not true that our economic problems are solely due to COVID-19.”
In response, Deputy Finance Minister Abena Osei Asare assured that the government remains committed to fiscal discipline, noting a 2.9% savings achieved in the first half of 2024.
“Mr. Speaker, in an election year, we have been able to spend within our limits. We budgeted GHC1.48 billion to be spent from January to June 2024, but we have spent GHC1.1 billion. We have made some savings below GHC2.9 billion, below what was actually budgeted for. We’re bent on living within our means, ensuring that we don’t go over and above what has been proposed for us,” she explained.
Ghana has blamed external factors such as COVID-19, Russia-Ukraine war for the countries economic challenges. Internal factors include the exchange rate, Ghana’s heavy dependence on importation, inflation among others.
The celebration of his accomplishment today was shared with fans through videos posted online, showcasing his family—his wife, Dr. Louisa, a qualified dentist, and their children, Catherine Jidula and Janam—on the university grounds.
Following his final exam, the Satekla family hosted a celebratory gathering at home.
Stonebwoy’s return to education comes after he had previously interrupted his studies at the University of Professional Studies Accra (UPSA), where he was pursuing a degree in business administration, to dedicate himself to his music career.
Stonebwoy and his family arrives for his graduation at GIMPA School of Public Administration. Congrats to him 🎉
The Paris 2024 Olympic Games are set to kick off with an unprecedented Opening Ceremony, transforming the French capital into a vast outdoor stage.
Scheduled for Friday, July 26, this groundbreaking event will defy tradition by taking place outside a stadium, offering a unique spectacle along the Seine River.
When is the Ceremony?
The Opening Ceremony will commence on July 26, 2024, at 19:30 CEST, and is expected to run for over three hours.
Why is This Ceremony Historic?
For the first time in Olympic history, the Opening Ceremony will not be held in a stadium. Instead, the ceremony will feature a spectacular river parade on the Seine, with athletes floating past Paris’s most iconic landmarks. The Seine will replace the usual athletics track, while the quays will serve as spectator stands. The setting sun and the city’s famous architecture will provide a stunning backdrop.
This innovative approach makes Paris 2024 the largest Opening Ceremony in terms of both audience and geographical reach.
What is the Parade Route?
The parade will start at the Austerlitz Bridge near the Jardin des Plantes and travel 6 kilometers west along the Seine. Athletes will glide past historic bridges, landmarks such as Notre-Dame and the Louvre, and several Games venues like the Esplanade des Invalides and the Grand Palais. The flotilla will conclude at the Trocadero, where the Olympic cauldron will be lit, marking the official opening of the Games.
How Many Athletes Will Participate?
Approximately 10,500 athletes from nearly 100 boats will participate in the parade. The larger National Olympic Committees (NOCs) will have individual boats, while smaller NOCs will share. Camera equipment on the boats will allow close-up views of the athletes and their interactions.
What Entertainment Can We Expect?
Thomas Jolly, the artistic director of the Paris 2024 ceremonies, promises a grand-scale performance blending traditional and modern elements of French culture. With a focus on diversity, Jolly aims to highlight everything from opera to rap. Ceremonies choreographer Maud Le Pladec will direct 400 dancers as part of a larger ensemble of 3,000 artists. Costume designer Daphne Burki is ensuring a sustainable approach, incorporating vintage and upcycled materials into the costumes.
What Will the Athletes Wear?
The athletes’ uniforms will reflect a range of styles, from Team USA’s preppy jackets and jeans to Italy’s casual dark blue outfits. French athletes will wear luxury vests and jackets. Other nations, like Mongolia, Brazil, and Guatemala, will showcase traditional and culturally significant designs, adding a vibrant touch to the parade.
How to Watch the Ceremony
Approximately 600,000 people will experience the Opening Ceremony in person. Paris 2024 has made the event accessible by offering 222,000 free tickets for the upper banks of the Seine and 104,000 paid tickets for the lower quays. For those unable to attend, 80 giant screens will be set up across Paris. An estimated 1.5 billion viewers worldwide are expected to tune in to televised broadcasts.
Paris 2024 is set to deliver an unforgettable Olympic Opening Ceremony, blending historic grandeur with a modern, inclusive approach.
The Minority in Parliament has criticized the government for attributing the country’s current economic challenges to the COVID-19 pandemic, asserting that economic mismanagement predates the health crisis.
During a discussion on the 2024 Mid-Year Budget Review presented by the Finance Minister, Isaac Adongo, the Ranking Member on the Finance Committee, voiced the Minority’s concerns.
He argued that the government should not use the pandemic as an excuse for its fiscal failures.
“Even before COVID-19, the government of the day had already plunged this country into serious fiscal quagmire. We were expected to record changes in our net international reserves. Mr. Speaker, we missed it in March and June and we’re looking at September 2024,” Adongo stated.
He emphasized that the economic troubles were evident well before the pandemic.
“This government had been on our case that it is because of COVID-19 that is why we’re in this situation that we find ourselves. However, the Bank of Ghana issued a statement indicating that at the time that we exited the programme in May 2019, the government of Ghana five months later was struggling with major concerns within the fiscal environment.
Adongo firmly stated, “It is not true that our economic problems are solely due to COVID-19.”

Chief Executive Officer of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), Samuel Pyne, has revealed that the government is poised to release funds to restart construction on the second phase of the Kejetia Market Redevelopment Project.
This announcement comes after a prolonged halt in construction due to financial delays.
The project, which has been stalled for over a year, saw the departure of the construction firm Contracta, which ceased operations and dismissed workers due to the delayed release of funds.
Mr. Pyne confirmed that following the government’s assurance of prompt fund release, the construction company plans to return to the site in August 2024 to resume full-scale operations.
“We had a recommencement meeting last week Thursday, 18th July 2024, in Kumasi. Since Contracta left about 13 months ago, they need to re-engage workers. Currently, they have all the materials for the shops ready and are reassessing the materials left on-site to ensure they are still suitable for the project. The Finance Minister has provided an assurance letter guaranteeing prompt payment,” Mr. Pyne stated.
The €248 million project, initiated in May 2019, was originally slated for completion within 48 months but has faced numerous setbacks, causing significant delays. The government has attributed the delay to its domestic debt restructuring program with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
The site, now overrun with weeds and home to reptiles, has left traders, who were relocated to temporary shelters, struggling with inadequate conditions. Frustrated by the delays, these traders have threatened to withdraw their support for the ruling NPP in the 2024 elections.
However, with successful renegotiations with the IMF, funds have now been secured to resume the project. Upon completion, the new market will feature 6,500 leasable commercial spaces, 5,400 enclosed stores, 800 kiosks, 50 restaurants, and various ancillary facilities including a fire station, police station, and a mini theatre.
Despite the recommencement, Mr. Pyne indicated that the project is unlikely to be completed before the December elections.
“The project was initially scheduled for completion in February this year. We’ve experienced a 13-month delay, and the remaining work will extend beyond 5 months. Therefore, it’s unrealistic to expect the project to be finished before the election,” he explained.
The Ministry of Health has responded to concerns raised by the Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, about a service contract with Service Auto Group Ghana Limited for the maintenance of ambulances.
The Ministry clarified that this contract was originally signed by the now-defunct Ministry of Special Development Initiatives and that subsequent actions were taken under the guidance of the Office of the Chief of Staff.
On September 10, 2020, the Ministry of Special Development Initiatives entered into a contract with Service Auto Group Ghana Limited to provide after-sales service and maintenance for 307 Mercedes Benz Sprinter 315 CDI ambulances. The contract included a provision for the supplier to offer a projected budget for necessary spare parts and lubricants to ensure smooth servicing and maintenance.
Following the dissolution of the Ministry of Special Development Initiatives, the Special Initiatives Development Secretariat took over the contract’s execution. However, in March 2023, the Office of the Chief of Staff requested the Ministry of Health to explore ways to support the National Ambulance Service in maintaining the ambulances due to Parliament’s refusal to approve the budget estimates of the Special Initiatives Development Secretariat for the 2023 fiscal year.
In response to this directive, the Ministry of Health approached the Ministry of Finance to establish letters of credit totaling $34,904,505.00 on behalf of Service Auto Group Ghana Limited for procuring spare parts for the 307 ambulances. The Ministry of Finance responded, indicating it could only fund up to $10 million of the requested amount and recommended that the Ministry of Health seek additional financing through the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA).
Despite this, the NHIA stated in correspondence with the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Finance that it could not fund the procurement of spare parts from the 10% allocation to the Ministry of Health, as this expense was not included in the allocation formula approved by Parliament.
The Ministry of Health emphasized that Service Auto Group Ghana Limited had not been paid the widely reported $34.9 million. The Ministry reiterated its commitment to ensuring a sustainable maintenance regime for all fleets procured for the National Ambulance Service to provide reliable, efficient, and safe emergency medical services.
Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa had raised concerns about potential corruption in the deal, alleging that the contract was hastily approved and that $10 million had already been paid to the company. He also questioned the legitimacy of Service Auto Group Ghana Limited, noting that the company was incorporated a year after the ambulances were commissioned in 2019 and raised concerns about the company’s capacity to service the ambulances.
Furthermore, Ablakwa alleged connections between the company and President Akufo-Addo’s daughters, suggesting that one of the company’s directors is a close business associate of the President’s daughters. These allegations prompted Ablakwa to petition the Office of the Special Prosecutor.
In its statement, the Ministry of Health noted that all documentation covering the transaction is a matter of public record and accessible to the public. The Ministry expressed its readiness to support any efforts to bring further clarity to the issue in the public interest.
As of July 2024, the Ghana cedi has experienced a 19.6% depreciation against the US dollar on the interbank forex market, according to the latest report from the Bank of Ghana (BoG).
This decline is slightly less severe compared to the approximately 21% drop observed on the retail market.
The Central Bank’s July 2024 Summary of Financial and Economic Data reveals a pattern of depreciation throughout the year. The cedi weakened by 7.7% in March 2024, followed by a 10.5% drop in April. The losses continued with a 15.9% depreciation in June and an 18.6% decline in July.
On the retail market, the cedi is currently trading at an average of GH¢15.60 per US dollar, while the Bank of Ghana’s rate is GH¢14.78 per dollar.
In addition to its decline against the dollar, the cedi has depreciated by 20.8% against the British pound, with the current rate at GH¢19.10. It has also lost 18.4% in value against the euro, trading at GH¢16.09.
Despite these challenges, the cedi showed signs of stability against the dollar last week, buoyed by increased corporate demand and market speculation about a potential rate cut by the US Federal Reserve.
This led to a 0.29% weekly gain, with the cedi closing at a mid-rate of GH¢15.64 per dollar on the retail market. This marks the second consecutive week of gains for the cedi against the US dollar.
Twelve years ago, then Minority Chief Whip Muntaka Mubarak criticised the Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin for his role in the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta’s censure fiasco.
The Asawase MP said the Speaker is becoming a tyrant.
“I am sorry to say this, when you want to turn the Chamber of Parliament into a palace, then you become a tyrant. He is becoming a tyrant,” he said.
This, Mr Muntaka asserted, is because Mr Bagbin does not tolerate disagreement.
“You are not a chief, you are supposed to be a Speaker of Parliament and a Speaker listens to both sides patiently even where there is a disagreement and that is the essence of democracy to sometimes even agree to disagree but where you personalised it as if a disagreement is a disrespect to you .. then I am sorry you are becoming a bad Speaker,” he added.
The NDC MP reserved some sharp criticism for Speaker Alban Bagbin whom he accused of abusing Parliament’s Standing Orders in setting up the controversial Adhoc committee that gave the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta a public hearing.
“That committee [Adhoc committee] was not necessary, our Standing Orders are very clear. Speaker has no discretion and authority to do any other thing contrary to what is stated in the Standing Orders and I continue to maintain that,” he emphasised.
This news has resurfaced after new developments following the sacking of Member of Parliament for Sefwi Wiawso, Kwaku Afriyie, in Parliament on Monday, July 22, 2024.
During the parliamentary sitting, Mr Afriyie passed a comment deemed to be rude by Speaker Alban Bagbin when he announced that the House had been notified about the nomination of new judges to the Supreme Court.
The Speaker said “In giving you the information, I have given you an idea of the expectations of the people of Ghana. That is for you to consider as part of the report and the House to decide as to whether we will approve or disapprove those nominations.”
“His Excellency clearly stated that he is constitutionally injuncted to do what he has done, and so it is now for you to also look at.”
Mr Afriyie then expressed dissatisfaction with how Mr Bagbin made his preliminary submission.
“And I believe that as one representing the good people of Sefwi Wiawso, it doesn’t lie in your mouth to remind us of the things that you have said,” the MP told the Speaker.
Peeved by the legislator’s remarks, Speaker Bagbin ordered the Marshal to show the Sefwi Wiawso MP out of the chamber.
“Marshal, take him out of the House. I will not entertain such disrespect. It lies in my mouth,” he exclaimed.
“You represent the good people of Sefwi Wiawso, I represent the whole country,” the Speaker added.

During the swearing-in, the President charged the justices to uphold the highest standards of conduct and to dispense justice impartially—without fear, favor, affection, or ill-will.
“The judiciary should be free from any form of external influence or interference,” President Akufo-Addo declared.
“It is only through preserving this independence that we can be certain that justice is administered impartially.”
The Ministry of Health has issued a response to accusations made by Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Member of Parliament for North Tongu, concerning a $34.9 million contract for ambulance spare parts.
In a statement dated Thursday, July 25, the Ministry clarified that the contract in question was initially signed by the now-defunct Ministry of Special Development Initiatives with Service Auto Group Ghana Limited.
This contract, established for the after-sales service and maintenance of 307 Mercedes Benz Sprinter 315 CDI ambulances procured by the government in 2019, has come under scrutiny following Ablakwa’s allegations of potential corruption. Ablakwa has since taken the matter to the Office of the Special Prosecutor.
The former Deputy Education Minister accused the Finance Minister of hastily approving the deal just five days before his removal from office, claiming that $10 million had already been paid to Service Auto Group Ghana Limited.
Ablakwa’s actions aim to safeguard the remaining funds, questioning the legitimacy of the company, which was incorporated on April 24, 2020, a year after the ambulances were commissioned.
Ablakwa expressed concerns about the company’s capacity to service the ambulances and highlighted troubling findings by the Auditor-General regarding the company’s credibility. He also alleged a connection between President Akufo-Addo’s daughters and the company, suggesting that one of the directors is a close business associate of the President’s daughters.
In its statement, the Ministry of Health did not directly address the corruption allegations but clarified that the Finance Minister acted on the Health Ministry’s request after the dissolution of the Ministry of Special Development Initiatives.
The Ministry emphasized that no $34.9 million payment had been made to Ghana Auto Group Limited as reported.
“The Ministry of Health would like to clarify that the Service Provider, Ghana Auto Group Limited, has not been paid an amount of $34.9 million as widely reported,” the statement read.
The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a sustainable service regime for the National Ambulance Service to ensure efficient and safe emergency medical services. Additionally, it expressed readiness to support any efforts aimed at bringing further clarity to the issue in the public interest.
Entertainment pundit and politician, Mr. Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A-Plus has opined that President Akufo-Addo is a major problem for the campaign of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia ahead of the 2024 General Election.
“The problem in the NPP which will of course affect Bawumia’s campaign is Akufo-Addo,” he said in a video on social media.
According to A-Plus, President Akufo-Addo deceived many Ghanaians after promising to bring progress to the good people of Ghana.
He noted that several individuals warned electorates but no one paid heed to their caution.

Also, a political science lecturer and analyst, Dr. Jonathan Asante Otchere, had expressed similar sentiment.
According to him, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will not realise this until its flagbearer loses the presidential election on December 7.
“I think that the President is a major problem for Dr. Bawumia’s campaign but as of now, they wouldn’t know until they have lost the elections.
“For me, he is not contesting, he is just a distraction for Dr. Bawumia…by that stretch of imagination, I feel that you are rather making Bawumia not to be his own man,” Dr. Jonathan Asante Otchere said.
Minister of State at the Ministry of Energy, Herbert Krapa, has officially inaugurated Africa’s largest rooftop photovoltaic solar plant, located at the Tema Free Zones Enclave.
This facility which generates 16.8 megawatts of electricity represents a major advancement in renewable energy.
The $17 million project, developed by Helios Solar Energy—a subsidiary of LMI Holdings—spans 100,000 square meters. During the commissioning, Mr. Krapa inspected the installation atop the three-story building and activated the plant.
He praised Helios Solar Energy for their contribution towards the government’s goal of enhancing the renewable energy sector. The project, funded by the International Finance Corporation (IFC), was entirely executed by Ghanaian engineers and technicians.
Mr. Krapa emphasized the project’s role in supporting the government’s vision of integrating 10% renewable energy into the national energy mix by 2030.
He highlighted the importance of private sector involvement in meeting these targets, stating that while government funding is available, the primary financial support should come from private enterprises.
He also noted the project’s broader impact, including the creation of sustainable jobs, the reduction of CO2 emissions, and the introduction of advanced skills and technologies to young engineers.
Additionally, he pointed out that it would contribute to lower energy costs for industries, thus enhancing the competitiveness of the manufacturing sector.
Mr. Krapa underscored that the solar plant aligns with the government’s national energy transition framework, which aims for a net-zero pathway by 2060. This framework, recently launched by the president at the UN General Assembly, outlines numerous projects required to achieve the set goals.
In conclusion, Mr. Krapa expressed pride in the achievement and encouraged further collaboration between the private sector and government to drive the nation’s renewable energy agenda forward.
Yendi MP Farouk Aliu Mahama has announced that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is aiming to secure 50% of the votes in the Northern Region for the upcoming presidential and parliamentary elections in December.
Mahama stated that this ambitious goal is based on the substantial developmental achievements made in the region over the past seven and a half years under the NPP administration.
He pointed to key investments in infrastructure, including road improvements, enhanced health facilities, upgraded educational infrastructure, human resource development, rural electrification, and business growth.
In an interview with Asaase Radio on Friday, July 19, Mahama, who also chairs the Government Assurance Committee, praised the NPP’s presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
He emphasized Bawumia’s credibility and innovative policies, which he believes will be instrumental in reaching the party’s target.
Mr Mahama expressed confidence that these accomplishments, combined with Bawumia’s strong credentials, will significantly bolster the NPP’s efforts to capture half of the votes in the Northern Region.
“This time, we are targeting 50% of the votes in the north. Our projection is realistic because John Mahama received significantly more votes than the NPP in the 2020 elections. Dr. Bawumia’s message centers on evidence-based development,” Mahama explained.
He continued, “In the history of Ghana, no government has ever constructed a 168 km road in northern Ghana, but the NPP government has broken that record. The Vice President secured the World Bank project, which facilitated the construction of the road from Tamale to Yendi, extending through Zabzugu to Tatale. No previous government has achieved this.”

The cause of the blaze on Thursday night, July 25, remains unknown.
The inferno, which devastated at least nine rooms, left the affected students distraught and nearby residents alarmed.
Although no casualties were reported, nine students lost all their belongings.
According to victims, the fire originated in one room and rapidly spread throughout the building, destroying their possessions within minutes. Eyewitnesses reported that attempts to reach the KNUST Fire Department were initially unsuccessful, leading to a 30-minute delay in response.
Last night, there was a fire outbreak at one of the KNUST hostels, near the De Lisa main hostel. The cause of the outbreak was an alleged gas explosion in one of the students' rooms. Fortunately, there were no casualties recorded. pic.twitter.com/7YN9ZAspq1
The remaining sections of the building have been declared uninhabitable due to substantial structural damage. In response to the disaster, the KNUST Students’ Representative Council (SRC) has provided temporary accommodation for the displaced students at the SRC hostel.
The council is also calling on all students to follow safety protocols diligently to prevent future incidents.

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has distributed laptops to 233 teachers and some non-teaching staff in the Okaikwei North Municipality, Greater Accra Region.
This initiative is part of the government’s One Teacher, One Laptop programme, aimed at enhancing the educational system through improved access to technology.
The distribution event took place at the Municipal Education Directorate in Achimota. Recipients underwent validation processes, including the presentation of their Ghana Cards, before receiving their laptops and accompanying bags.
Teachers expressed their gratitude towards the government and their union leaders for the timely rollout of the programme.
One teacher remarked, “The trend in education is driven purely by ICT, and devices such as computer laptops come in handy to enhance the teacher’s efforts.”
This programme has also benefited pre-tertiary teachers in all five northern regions of Ghana, including Northern, North East, Savannah, Upper East, and Upper West. A mop-up exercise is currently underway to ensure primary school teachers, teachers on study leave, and GES office staff in these regions receive their laptops.
Teaching and non-teaching staff who have not yet received their laptops can generate a collection code by dialing 790555# and contacting their ICT Coordinators for assistance. A statement from the manufacturing firm in Accra urged all remaining beneficiaries to use this shortcode and reach out to their respective ICT Coordinators.
According to the company, nearly 96% of eligible GES staff have already received their laptops. Efforts are being intensified to ensure all remaining beneficiaries receive their devices, thus concluding the nationwide distribution. The shortcode has been established to facilitate this final phase.
Teachers in the Ashanti, Greater Accra, North East, Upper West, Upper East, Northern, and Savannah Regions can activate their short code and contact their ICT Coordinators from Friday, July 26th, to collect their laptops. Teachers and non-teaching staff in the remaining 10 regions will follow the same process starting Wednesday, July 30th, 2024.
The One Teacher, One Laptop programme, launched in September 2021, aims to improve teaching and learning outcomes in pre-tertiary educational institutions nationwide. Under the programme, every public school teacher from kindergarten to senior high school is to receive a laptop to aid in lesson preparation, research, and learning.
The government covers 70% of the laptop cost, with teachers contributing the remaining 30% through their unions. These laptops also enable teachers to access digital online training through National Teaching Council-approved modules, ensuring that teaching aligns with National Teachers Standards across the country.
The long-awaited reconstruction of the Mampong Coronation Park, costing GHC4 million, is set to be completed within three months.
This project was officially inaugurated by Sammi Awuku, Director General of the National Lottery Authority and New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate for the Akuapim South constituency in the Eastern Region.
Upon completion, the revamped facility will boast a FIFA-standard football pitch measuring 96 by 66 meters. The project will also feature 400 spectator seats and VIP sections to accommodate esteemed dignitaries, including revered traditional leaders.
Additionally, new dressing rooms will be constructed for both host and visiting teams, and four giant floodlights will be installed at each corner of the pitch to enable night games. The entire area will be enclosed with panel mesh fencing to enhance security and restrict unauthorized access.
Speaking to the media after the ceremony on Thursday, July 25, 2024, Sammi Awuku explained that the reconstruction was initiated in response to a special request from traditional leaders to modernize the pitch and improve recreational facilities for the Mampong community.
“The modernization of Mampong Coronation Park is a significant step in enhancing recreational facilities for the community. This project was initiated following a request from our esteemed traditional leaders, and we are committed to delivering a top-notch facility,” Awuku stated.
He also urged the contractor to adhere strictly to the project schedule to ensure timely completion.
Historically, the Mampong and Sunyani Coronation Parks are among the few football pitches built by Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, in district capitals to promote football programmes.
According to the Okyeame of Mampong, the Mampong Coronation Park served as a training ground for the Black Stars and was the last pitch they used before winning the African Cup of Nations in 1982.
The National Communication Authority (NCA) has announced plans to reduce data prices by the last quarter of the year, addressing growing public discontent over high data costs and subpar services.
This pledge comes amid calls for the dissolution of the NCA board, partly sparked by the controversy surrounding MTN’s designation as a Significant Market Power (SMP).
Critics argue that the SMP classification has contributed to unreliable data supply and inflated costs. In response, the NCA emphasized that the SMP classification is intended to foster fair competition rather than impede MTN’s operations.
The authority detailed measures including unbalanced interconnection rates, tariff parity, and technology neutrality, aimed at enhancing competition, stimulating innovation, and safeguarding consumer interests.
In a recent interview on Citi FM, Director General of the NCA, Dr. Joe Anokye, shared insights into the anticipated reduction in data prices. He highlighted the forthcoming launch of the NGIC wholesale carrier-neutral open access network as a key factor in driving down costs.
“The introduction of the NGIC wholesale carrier-neutral open access network is expected to significantly lower data prices,” Dr. Anokye stated.
“Operators such as AT, Telecel, and MTN will be able to purchase bulk data without the need to upgrade towers or equipment, leading to increased efficiency and reduced costs.”
Dr. Anokye expressed optimism about the future, noting that the new network would be operational by the end of the year.
“With the NGIC network, AT, Telecel, and even MTN will simply buy bulk data; they won’t need to invest in upgrading towers or acquiring new equipment to offer 4G services. Another entity is handling that aspect. The network is scheduled to launch by the last quarter of the year, and from there, we’ll begin adding more towers. I believe this is a positive development.”
