Video: Osofo Kyiri Abosom send strong warning to Akufo-Addo

Reverend Christian Kwabena Andrews, also known as Osofo Kyiri Abosom, the 2020 presidential candidate for the Ghana Union Movement (GUM), has issued a warning, indicating his intention to lead a protest if President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo sends Ghanaian troops to intervene in the ongoing coup crisis in Niger.

Osofo Kyiri Abosom made this declaration during a press briefing in Accra on Monday, August 14, 2023. He stressed the need for Ghana to address its own internal challenges and avoid interference in the internal affairs of other countries.

Directing his message to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Osofo Kyiri Abosom highlighted Ghana’s domestic struggles and pleaded against actions that might lead to the loss of life among Ghanaian military personnel.

He underscored the close bond between Ghanaians and their military, expressing concerns about endorsing any action that could jeopardize their safety.

In a firm tone, Osofo Kyiri Abosom cautioned that if the president disregards their plea and proceeds with intervention, the Ghana Union Movement (GUM) would lead a robust protest against the president and his administration. He emphasized the importance of maintaining Ghana’s tradition of peaceful coexistence and avoiding any violence.

Osofo Kyiri Abosom also commented on GUM’s perspective on the involvement of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in the Niger situation. He questioned the reasoning behind engaging in conflict and emphasized the significance of first resolving Ghana’s internal issues. To illustrate his point, he cited Nigeria’s ongoing struggles with Boko Haram.

Meanwhile, Gold Ahinful, the General Secretary of GUM, announced the upcoming opening of nominations for the flagbearer and national executive positions. The nomination period is set to begin on Friday, September 1 and conclude on September 8, 2023. Prospective presidential candidates are required to submit a non-refundable fee of GH¢100,000 as part of the nomination process.

HORRENDOUS: 22-year-old decapitates 7-year-old niece for money rituals

Recently, the disturbing details of the tragic murder of 7-year-old Spendylove Adjei have come to light, painting a gruesome picture of the event. The individuals implicated in this heart-wrenching crime are her own uncle, Augustine Afari, and a spiritualist named Osei Kofi.

Augustine Afari, a 22-year-old artisanal miner, allegedly sought quick wealth and turned to the spiritualist for advice on achieving this through illegal mining activities.

The spiritualist advised him to obtain a human head for a ritualistic purpose. In a horrifying turn of events, Afari reportedly took the life of his own niece in a brutal manner, using a machete to beat her to death before decapitating her.

The circumstances surrounding the incident are deeply tragic. The young girl’s father had entrusted her to Afari’s care while her grandmother tended to her crops. Upon the grandmother’s return, the child was missing, and Afari pretended not to know her whereabouts.

Despite the family’s frantic search, they were unable to find the girl. This prompted them to file a formal complaint with the police, leading to Afari’s arrest. He was later questioned and released on bail pending further investigation.

Eventually, Afari confessed to a pastor about his heinous act, who promptly alerted the police. Shockingly, it was revealed that Afari had buried the girl’s body without her head at an abandoned mining site.

In an unexpected twist, the spiritualist rejected the severed head sent to him by Afari, insisting that the ritual demanded the head to be presented on the same day as the murder. As a result, both Afari and the spiritualist were apprehended and charged with the serious offense of murder.

483 days to go – Mahama countdown to 2024 election

Immediate past President John Dramani Mahama has emphasized the importance of safeguarding constitutional governance, describing it as “the best” form of governance. The former president conveyed this message through a Facebook post on August 13, where he shared a flyer with his thoughts.

In his post, he stated, “Constitutional governance is still best. It allows us to peacefully change our leaders if we believe they are not working in the interest of the people! 483 days to go for the verdict of the people.”

This post serves as a countdown to the upcoming 2024 elections, where Mahama is vying for the position of presidential flagbearer for the National Democratic Congress.

This will mark Mahama’s fourth consecutive attempt at the presidency. He previously won the election in 2012 but experienced defeats in 2016 and 2020 to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

This statement from Mahama arrives amidst a context in which West Africa is grappling with a recent coup in Niger, where a junta ousted democratically elected President Mohamed Bazoum from office last month. The regional organization, ECOWAS, has proposed dialogue and potential military intervention to reinstate Bazoum and remove the junta. The military intervention option has received criticism, while the junta has recently expressed a willingness to engage in discussions.

UGCC was not Ghana’s first political party – Dr Nii Moi’s corrects distorted history

The long held history that “The Big Six” formed the very first political party on the shores of the then Gold Coast and named it the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC) is but a distorted history.

For years, generations have been taught in basic schools through to the University that the foundation for Ghana’s political party system was laid by the UGCC, but this appears to be untrue as several other parties existed before the UGCC.

In his latest article, the well-recognized Dr Nii Moi Thompson has shed light on Ghana’s true political history in snippets.

A paragraph of his article addresses the myth.

Myth No. 3: UGCC was the first political party in the Gold Coast.

Fact: The earliest known political parties (for municipal, not national, elections) were mainly the Accra Rate Payers Association and the Ga Manbii (Ga Nationalist) Party of Kojo Thompson in the 1920s. Lesser-known parties, such as the Asene Koo Wulu Party, later emerged in Accra and other municipalities like Cape Coast and Sekondi in the 1930s; never in Abuakwa, Danquah’s hometown. By the time the UGCC was founded in Saltpond in 1947, there were already other (if generally inactive) parties, particularly, the Gold Coast People’s League and the Gold Coast National Party. As a result, the name originally proposed by the founders was changed from Gold Coast People’s Party (GCPP) to United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC), to rein in the other parties.

Beware, the tribal supremacists: Myths of J.B. Danquah and the Big Six

As expected, the president’s recent suggestion that the University of Ghana might be renamed after his late uncle, Dr. J.B. Danquah, the Gold Coast lawyer and “nationalist,” has provoked a firestorm of criticism from a public that has clearly had enough of the tribal-supremacist agenda of the president and his kinsmen.

And none of them have articulated the rationale behind this agenda more brazenly than a relative of the president, lawyer Samuel Atta Akyea, who three years ago said the following on the television programme, Good Evening Ghana:

“If you remove the role of the Akyem people from the history of this country, we won’t have a history… The guy who named this country is from Akufo-Addo’s background. The one who wanted Ghana called Ghana… [was] J. B. Danquah….” Mr. Akyea went on to cite the Big Six, the leaders of the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC) who were arrested by the British colonialists after the 1948 riots that accelerated the independence process, and reminded viewers that the president’s father, among the six, “was one of the individuals who are acclaimed as the pioneers of our independence.”

With this crude concoction of facts and fiction, they tend to believe that they own the country and can do as they please. Textbooks, for instance, have been doctored and Danquah given disproportionate prominence in Ghana’s history.

This peasant aristocracy sense of entitlement, especially among people occupying national offices, is a threat to social cohesion and national development. So let us demolish forthwith a few myths about J.B. Danquah and the Big Six, and tackle other aspects of Ghanaian history that the tribalists have bastardised to drive this dangerous ideology of tribal supremacy. (For the record, I condemn the term “Akyem mafia,” or any term that demonises an entire tribe for the folly of a few).

Myth No. 1: Danquah’s research linked the Akan of Ghana to the ancient Ghana Empire.

Fact: That credit goes to Rev. J. B. Anaman, of Anomabo and Sekondi, whose research took place in 1895, the year Danquah was born.

Myth No. 2: Danquah founded the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC).

Fact: Danquah himself described George Alfred (Paa) Grant, the wealthy Gold Coast merchant, as the “architect and founder of the UGCC.”

As a result, the name originally proposed by the founders was changed from Gold Coast People’s Party (GCPP) to United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC), to rein in the other parties.

Myth No. 4: The Big Six were the architects of the 28th February 1948 demo that propelled Ghana’s independence movement.

Fact: George Padmore, Kwame Nkrumah’s political advisor, stated in his book, The Gold Coast Revolution, that the Big Six did “not” initiate the demonstration. Nkrumah was away from Accra on the 28th , and Danquah and the other four initially condemned the ex-service men for the violence that had been instigated by the reckless shooting of unarmed demonstrators by a trigger-happy British officer named Colin Imray. The British arrested the six politicians – Kwame Nkrumah, Ebenezer Ako-Adjei, Edward Akufo-Addo, J.B. Danquah, William Ofori-Atta, and Emmanuel Obetsebi-Lamptey – more for their UGCC work than any direct involvement in the events of 28th February.

Who then was the architect of 28th February? That credit goes mainly to Mr. B. E. A Tamakloe, general secretary of the Ex-servicemen’s Union, who negotiated the demonstration with the governor; to whom the governor addressed all letters; and in whose name the permit for the demonstration was issued. He was supported by five other people, according to the Watson Commission’s report, making them the Real Big Six, but the five were not named.

    However, all eight executives of the Union who planned the demo were named, giving us the Big Eight: (1) B. E. A. Tamakloe; (2) S. A. Codjoe; (3) R. T. Dodoo; (4) J. S. Laryea; (5) R. P. Craig; (6) F. L. Adjei; (7) J. D. Ankrah; and (8) G. E. Lutterodt. We need a proper history of Ghana.

And then there were the 29 martyrs who died from the disturbances of the 28th and the days that followed, including Sgt. Cornelius Nii Adjetey; Corporal Patrick Attipoe, and Private Odartey Lamptey, who were murdered by Imray. The Big Six, as a group, were accidental beneficiaries of history, their individual contributions to the nationalist movement notwithstanding.

Myth No. 5: Ashantis did not play any role in the independence movement because they don’t appear in the Big Six.

Fact: Ghana’s history is bigger than the Big Six, despite efforts by Danquah’s descendants to make the Big Six (and, within the Big Six, their relatives) the alpha and omega of our history. Krobo Edusei of the Ashanti Youth Association (AYA) was the chairman of the Kumasi committee of the nation-wide Anti-Inflation Campaign that was organised by Mantse Nii Kwabena Bonne (a chief of both Osu and Techiman, then part of Ashanti) in 1948.

When the Big Six were incarcerated in Kumasi, AYA plotted to storm the prison and free them, prompting the governor to whisk them to the Northern Territories, under stricter security, for fear that the hard-nosed AYA members may still make their way up north. Edusei later served nine months in jail for his political activism alongside Nkrumah. The AYA, in its militancy, had also demanded “self-government within the next five years,” compared to the UGCC’s gradualist approach of self-government “in the shortest possible time”.

The AYA, the Osu Youth Association, and the Sekondi Youth Association were among the youth groups that dragged Nkrumah from the UGCC and forced him to form the Convention People’s Party (CPP), which led Ghana to independence. They were the original foot soldiers! The proposed name for their new party was Ghana People’s Party, but Nkrumah asked that “Ghana” be reserved for independence and replaced it with “Convention” to show continuity, at least in name, from the UGCC.

Myth No. 6: Danquah named the Gold Coast Ghana.

Fact: That was simply impossible, as by 1957 Danquah’s political career was effectively over (he and Ofori-Atta having lost their seats to the CPP in the 1954 and 1956 elections). Only Nkrumah as prime minister in 1957 was in a position to propose that name, and he did. Danquah and the others criticised Nkrumah for choosing the name Ghana, and in his autobiography Nkrumah was forced to defend his choice.

Danquah, however, had a weird obsession for naming places, like the president does today. He had proposed, without any consultations, that the Northern Territories be renamed Fergusonia, after Ekem Ferguson, the surveyor from Anomabo who had done much work in the North. The idea was rejected by the British, much like his previous suggestion to rename the Gold Coast Akanland, and later Akan-Ga, when he was reminded that there were more than Akans in the colony. (He, like the president today and his fellow tribalists, was married to a Ga woman).

His most “valiant” name-changing effort was his suggestion after the 1948 riots that he and his relatives be put in charge of the Gold Coast, under the name Ghanaland. The idea of course was laughed off by the British. He pioneered the tribalism that his inward-looking descendants are now perfecting with national resources. (Remember the president’s statement, “Yen Akanfo” during his desperate struggle to win power – and destroy the country?)

Myth No. 7: Danquah was the “doyen of Gold Coast politicians”.

Fact: The Watson Commission described him as such but suggested that this was before Nkrumah came on the scene. Thus, in the 1951 election, Nkrumah won over 95% of the votes (from prison!) whilst Danquah scraped through with only 53% (and Ofori-Atta with 51%) in Abuakwa. In the 1954 election, both Danquah and Ofori-Atta, running on Busia’s Ghana Congress Party (GCP) after the collapse of the UGCC in 1951, lost to CPP upstarts, despite threats from the Okyenhene to deport anyone who voted for the CPP. Of the 104 seats, the GCP won only one – by Busia, who squeezed through his Wenchi constituency with an 11-vote victory over his CPP rival.

Danquah and Ofori-Atta again lost the 1956 elections, exposing the limits of Danquah’s purported doyenness. He was a novice when it came to political organisation and electioneering, no match for Nkrumah, the consummate organiser, strategist, orator, and man of the people. Whilst Nkrumah wore batakari, Danquah preferred his three-piece suit in the hot African sun, making him a stranger to his own people.

Myth No. 8: Kwame Nkrumah hated Ashantis.

Fact: The opposite was true. Nkrumah loved Ashanti and Ashanti loved him (and the CPP) back. One of the most fanatical members of the CPP was an Asante woman from Bekwai (but lived in Kumasi) who named herself Ama Nkrumah (the female version of Kwame Nkrumah) and pledged support to Nkrumah and the CPP with her blood. The CPP swept five of the six seats in the 1950 Kumasi municipal elections (6,210 votes versus 50 for the opposition), and would have won the sixth seat had it not been for a technical disqualification.

Ashanti was the first to benefit from Nkrumah’s Accelerated Education Programme of 1951, with the establishment of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology and Opoku Ware Secondary School in 1952, among others. Despite the terror attacks by the National Liberation Movement (NLM) in 1956 against CPP members, which led to an exodus of CPP refugees from Ashanti, the CPP won 8 seats in Ashanti, compared to 12 for the NLM in the 1956 election. The CPP won 43% of the total Ashanti vote and claimed NLM strongholds like Obuase and Asante Akyem hands down.

Suffice it to say that there is more to Ghana’s history than the Big Six, in whose shadow some now seek relevance and pre-eminence for their dead relatives. It appears that without the Big Six, they are nothing, unlike Nkrumah, whose legacy goes beyond the Big Six and stands on its own.

The public’s swift and no-nonsense rejection of the president’s loose talk about renaming UG after his uncle is a pointed reminder that Ghanaians would not tolerate the bastardisation of their history by any group or tribe, no matter how powerful or privileged they might feel.

Power, after all, in a democracy like Ghana’s, is fleeting. A word to the wise….

JB Danquah did not name Gold Coast Ghana – Nii Moi Thompson clarifies

Respected Ghanaian economist and historian Dr Nii Moi Thompson has shot down attempts by some members of the ruling government including President Akufo-Addo himself to distort Ghana’s history by apporting undue credit to the Akyems members of the United Gold Coast Convention.

Dr Nii Moi Thompson in an extensive in an article titled: ‘Beware, the tribal supremacists: Myths of J.B. Danquah and the Big Six’, wherein he criticized President Akufo-Addo’s recent hint at renaming the University of Ghana after his late uncle who, the president said would “not be far-fetched” to describe as the “founder” of Ghana’s premier institution of higher learning, Dr Thompson said: “Danquah … had a weird obsession for naming places, like the president does today”.

It will be recalled that a relative of the president, lawyer Samuel Atta Akyea, who three years ago said the following on the television programme, Good Evening Ghana:

  • A rare video of Otumfuo-led Asanteman Council destooling a sub-chief

The Asanteman Council has witnessed the destoolment of one of its subchiefs by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II. This action was taken in response to what was perceived as a lack of respect for a ruling made by the Asantehene in a land dispute involving the chief and another party.

A video shared on the Royal Palace MultiMedia YouTube page captured the moment when the Gyaasefuor presented the now-former Nkonsonhene, Nana Osei Tiri II, before the Asanteman Council.

According to the complainants in the case, despite Otumfuo’s ruling that a piece of contested land should remain untouched by the parties involved, Nana Osei Tiri II had disregarded this decision and even embarked on development activities on the land.

Following the ruling, Otumfuo had imposed restrictions on accessing the land and had called on both parties to present their plans, awaiting his final decision. However, Nana Osei Tiri II defied these directives.

In the course of cross-examination conducted by Otumfuo’s linguist, it was revealed that the Nkonsonhene had engaged in behavior considered as misconduct. His attempts to provide an explanation fell short, ultimately leading to the decision to depose him from his position.

In his statement, Otumfuo highlighted that the Nkonsonhene had neglected his responsibilities over an extended period, failing to uphold essential duties associated with his role. He also mentioned their childhood friendship as contributing to his perception that the Nkonsonhene had shown disregard for the significance of his position. These factors culminated in the decision to remove him from his office.

  • “You can’t use me to revive your dead career” – NDC’s Beatrrice Annan tells Frances Essiam

“You can’t use me to revive your dead career” – NDC’s Beatrrice Annan tells Frances Essiam

Hot tempered Frances Essiam, a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), strongly criticized by Beatrice Annan a member National Democratic Congress (NDC) in response to allegations surrounding the Bank of Ghana’s financial loss in 2022.

Beatrice Annan had accused the Bank of Ghana and the Economic Management Team of the Government of acting unlawfully and causing a GHC 60.8 billion loss.

Annan claimed that the Finance Minister and the Governor of the Bank of Ghana had violated the public financial management act by overspending without proper legal authorization and attempting to write off government debts without parliamentary approval.

Frances Essiam took serious offense to Annan’s accusations and expressed her displeasure vehemently. She strongly criticized Annan for making what she saw as baseless claims. Essiam expressed frustration with Annan’s statements, questioning Annan’s credentials and authority to label government officials as lawless. She even referred to Annan as a “criminal.”

“She (Beatrice Annan) is a criminal…When you impugn criminal to a whole political party?… It’s so offensive to call a group of people lawless. Are you their classmates?

“Are you their pedigree? To be calling Ken Ofori-Atta lawless? She’s spewing baseless propaganda. You don’t have even one basis point,” she interjected.

Despite efforts by the host, Annie Ampofo, to restore order, Essiam’s anger remained unabated. She continued to criticize Annan for her allegations and questioned the credibility of her claims. Essiam also cast doubts on Annan’s qualifications to make such serious accusations.

In response, Beatrice Annan remained composed and acknowledged Essiam’s insults. Annan stated that she would not allow herself to be used to revive Essiam’s political career. This response further angered Frances Essiam, leading her to deny any interest in resurrecting a supposed “dead political career” and clarifying her lack of aspiration for an elective position within the NPP.

“She can’t use me to revive her dead political career. That I won’t allow,” Beatrice Annan stressed.

Despite the host’s attempts to maintain decorum, the exchange remained heated, with Frances Essiam continuing to hurl invectives and make pointed remarks as the discussion unfolded. This tense interaction underscored the deep-seated divisions and heightened emotions prevalent in the political landscape during that period.

  • This gov’t is the most corrupt since 1992 – Martin Kpebu

This gov’t is the most corrupt since 1992 – Martin Kpebu

Anti-Corruption crusader and private legal practitioner Lawyer Martin Kpebu seems convinced that the current government led by Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is grappling with an unprecedented level of corruption, making it the most corrupt administration since 1992.

During an appearance on the One On One show on Metro TV on August 14, 2023, Kpebu criticized the government’s handling of corruption cases, highlighting that Akufo-Addo’s reluctance to take decisive action is exacerbating the problem.

Kpebu expressed his astonishment at the extent of corruption allegations, particularly citing the Cecilia Dapaah theft case as a prime example. He mentioned that he was initially skeptical about the severity of the issue but found the reported amounts involved in the theft shocking.

“We have always known that corruption is such a big problem in this government. This government is riddled with unparalleled corruption in our history. This is about the most corrupt administration we have seen since the 1992 Constitution,” he submitted.

The Cecilia Dapaah theft case has had significant repercussions, resulting in the resignation of the former sanitation minister and triggering a corruption investigation by the Office of the Special Prosecutor. This investigation has led to charges against two former household staff members accused of stealing substantial sums in various currencies. In addition to these individuals, five accomplices have also been implicated in the misappropriation of the stolen funds.

  • GHc60bn BOG loss could fund NABCO beneficiaries for 60 years – Edudzi Tameklo

GHc60bn BOG loss could fund NABCO beneficiaries for 60 years – Edudzi Tameklo

Legal Team member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Godwin Edudzi Tameklo, has pointed out that the GHc60 billion loss incurred by the Bank of Ghana (BoG) could provide funding for participants of the National Builders Corp (NABCO) program for a span of sixty years.

As per the 2022 report released by the Bank of Ghana, the institution reported a significant loss of approximately GHc60 billion. The central bank attributed this substantial deficit to the impact of the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme.

However, making an appearance on Accra-based TV3, Edudzi Tamekloe who is also a private legal practitioner, pointed out the significant impact the lost GH¢60 billion could have had on various government initiatives.

He criticised the government’s inability to sustain the NABCO program due to a lack of funds, despite the reported GH¢60 billion allocation from the central bank.

“Bank of Ghana is telling us that they have declared over GH¢60 billion. Now, that GH¢60 billion loss is enough to pay for NABCO beneficiaries for 60 years. You will be paying for them every year for 60 years.

“The reason the government of Ghana was not able to sustain the NABCO program is because of the lack of funds and we are being told the GH¢60 billion was given to the government of Ghana and more. And with all that amount of money, we are not able to sustain NABCO,” he said.

Edudzi Tamekloe further questioned the transparency and accountability in the management of such a substantial amount of money, particularly when it could have been channeled to support vital government programs like NABCO.

“As we speak, the government of Ghana is indebted to NABCO trainees. So where did the GH¢60 billion go, where is the money?” he questioned.

Calls for BoG Governor to resign grows

The corridors of Ghana’s financial landscape are resonating with fervent calls for a change in leadership as demands for the resignation of the Bank of Ghana (BOG) Governor intensify.

This follows a recent revelation by the Institution that it recorded a loss of GHC 60 billion in 2022.

Citizens are baffled by this revelation with many claiming that it is unjustified. The wave of dissent, fueled by concerns over economic stability and policy decisions, has sparked a national conversation about the direction of the country’s financial future.

In recent weeks, the BOG Governor’s leadership has come under scrutiny, with stakeholders from various sectors expressing reservations about the handling of economic challenges. From inflation concerns to currency fluctuations, critics have cited these issues as indicators of a lack of effective policy strategies.

Staunch politicians including NDC’s Sammy Gyamfi, Kofi Adams, Cassiel Ato Forson, etc. have all joined the calls for the Governor and his deputies to resign.

Tweeps are the latest to join the calls with the #Addisonmustresign topping the trends on Monday, August 14, 2023.

  • Men paid more bribes to public officials than females – UNODC report

Men paid more bribes to public officials than females – UNODC report

A new report by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) has revealed that men in Ghana have paid more bribes to public officials than women in the period 2019-2020.

The report, titled “Corruption in Ghana, Peoples experiences and views”, is based on a nationwide survey of over 12,000 households and 2,400 businesses.

The report aims to provide a comprehensive picture of the extent, nature and impact of corruption in Ghana, as well as the public perception and attitude towards it.

The report found that male public officials were more likely to take or solicit bribes from men than from women.

More than 60 percent of all bribes taken or solicited by male public officials were from men, while less than 40 percent were from women.

By contrast, female public officials were equally likely to take or solicit bribes from both sexes.

The report also highlighted the issue of ‘sextortion’ or ‘body currency’, which refers to the demand for sexual favours as a form of corruption.

The report noted that this phenomenon disproportionately affects women, but it is difficult to measure due to its sensitive nature and under-reporting.

The report suggested that some victims may not even consider such demands as acts of corruption, but rather as a normal part of their interaction with public officials.

The report also ranked the regions of Ghana according to the prevalence of direct bribery requests by public officials.

The Oti Region topped the list with 98 percent of such cases, followed by the Upper East Region with 91 percent and the Greater Accra Region with 88 percent. The Western North Region recorded the lowest rate of direct bribery requests with 24.8 percent, followed by the Central Region with 26.5 percent and the Eastern Region with 28.7 percent.

The report is part of UNODC’s efforts to support Ghana in implementing the United Nations Convention against Corruption (UNCAC), which Ghana ratified in 2007.

The report provides recommendations for improving anti-corruption policies and practices, as well as enhancing public awareness and participation in the fight against corruption.

Shatta Wale vows to help upcoming artists

Dancehall artist Shatta Wale has pledged to support and guide new and upcoming artists as they start their careers in the music industry.

Speaking in an interview on Takoradi’s Empire FM, he said that because he didn’t have the opportunity to get this support when he first started out, he made mistakes.

He wants to help new talents avoid making the same errors as a result.

According to him, if he had someone to led him at the beginning of his career he would not have done certain songs and beefed with people like he did.

He mentioned, “Gradually, I would just love to support artistes that are really coming up and would wanna do music and take them through orientation of who an artiste should be because we didn’t get the opportunity to go through some orientations. Like if we did, we would not be singing some profane songs here and there, doing some diss tracks here and there,” he stated.

He continued; “My future plans involve identifying emerging talents and offering them guidance to comprehend the music business in Ghana. This initiative is designed to prevent them from repeating the same mistakes that some of us have experienced.”

The self-proclaimed “Dancehall King’s” statement has already received tons of support from other industry players and fans, many of whom have praised his dedication to supporting emerging artists.

  • I support my daughter’s career because she is good with her academics- Afronitaa’s mother

I support my daughter’s career because she is good with her academics- Afronitaa’s mother

The mother of Afronitaa, the young Ghanaian dancer, has shared her reasons for endorsing and backing her daughter’s dancing career.

According to her, Afronita excels in academics and has the ability to seamlessly integrate her studies with her current involvement in dancing. This alignment of talents and pursuits is what has led her mother to provide her unwavering support as she forges ahead in her dancing career.

In an interview with Mcbrown on Onua Showtime, she explained that her daughter knows when to study and when to dance and that is what she likes about her, but if it was the vice-versa, she wouldn’t have allowed her to dance.

“The reason why I support her is that she is academically good; she takes her studies seriously. When she goes to school, it is about school but when she’s home, then she begins to rehearse and work on her dance from morning to evening. So, I told her that, if she does not do well in school, she won’t dance”.

“So, when I get her results from school, she always topped her class. Even with the BECE, she did very well and was admitted to Wesley Girls. Also, she passed her WASSCE examination and was also admitted to the University of Ghana, Legon”.

“I support her because she is good in academics, but if it was the otherwise, then should stop dancing and that is the arrangement we both have agreed to”, she told Nana Ama McBrown.

Afronita’s mother expressed her gratitude to Dancegod Lloyd throughout the performance for helping to fund and teach her daughter’s dance career.

“I would want to use this platform to thank him because he helped my daughter in the academy and Afrobeats as well. I appreciate these two for helping my daughter”, she said.

  • Oti Region tops regions with highest direct bribery request by public officials

Oti Region tops regions with highest direct bribery request by public officials

Oti Region has emerged as the region with the highest direct bribery request cases involving public officials in the country.

According to data from the United Nations, the region recorded 98% of such cases.

The Western North region on the other hand recorded the lowest cases, amounting to 24.8%.

Although the report said there is a substantial regional variation in the modality of how bribery is initiated, it also noted that when focused on direct requests by public officials in each of the 16 regions of Ghana, the data show that the share varies from as little as 24.8 per cent to as much as 91.8 percent.

“In other words, 9 out of 10 bribes in Oti are directly requested by a public official, while that is the case of just 2 out of 10 bribes in the Western North region. Such a large share of bribes being directly requested by public officials may suggest that acts of bribery do not come to the attention of the relevant authorities or that when they do, they are not investigated or there is no follow-up,” the report added.

According to the survey, about two thirds of bribes are paid before a service is rendered.

“Such a large share of bribes being paid in advance of a service is an indication that the payment of bribes to public officials is often expected in Ghana. It also further underlines the bargaining power of public officials, whose position of relative power enables them to solicit a payment in exchange for the promise of providing a public service that should have been rendered upon request and, on occasion, even free of charge,” the report added.

Father brutally assaults son for choosing football over going to the mosque

A promising and talented young player from Soccer Heroes Fc in Bole, Alhassan Abdul-Rauf, is currently hospitalized and undergoing treatment. This comes after his father forcibly removed him from the playing field and subjected him to a severe beating.

As per a bystander’s account, Alhassan Abdul-Rauf is a participant in the under 13 soccer category.

The incident happened during a league game between his team Bole Soccer Heroes fc and Bole Peace Fc at the Kurabaso Park in Bole on 13th August, 2023, during which Abdul- Rauf was asked by his father to stop playing which the young boy obliged only for the father to start slapping, beating, lifting and throwing the young player down the eye witness added.

People around rushed to save the boy but the infuriated father wouldn’t stop his attacks on the boy who eventually became unconscious.

While beating the young player, the father kept saying it is his son and no one should dare stop him from beating his son and not even the presence of some elderly men and Chiefs could stop him.

The boy was then rushed to the Bole District hospital unconscious and was swiftly attended to by the Nurses on duty.

After gaining consciousness the young player Alhassan Abdul- Rauf disclosed that all of that happened because his father wanted him to be going to ‘Mankaranta’ instead of playing football.

He added that he has a dream to become a footballer in future and perhaps represent Ghana internationally one day.

The football fraternity of Bole District is paying tribute to this young player and hope the Ghana Football Association and human rights institutions takes this case up.

  • You can picket for 100 years it’ll amount to nothing – Okoe Boye to Minority

Former Member of Parliament for Ledzokuku, Dr Bernard Okoe Boye, has declared the planned National Democratic Congress (NDC)  picket on the resignation of the Bank of Ghana Governor, Philip Addison, as a wild goose chase.

He holds the strong conviction that the exercise will yield no positive results.

In an interview on Peace FM’s Morning, Kokrokoo, he entreated the opposition to trigger the legitimate actions necessary for removing the Governor from office if he’s guilty of any offense and stop politicising matters.

Mr Okoe Boye’s comments follow recent revelations from the Bank of Ghana, with regards to losses recorded and other expenditure of the Apex Bank in 2022, and subsequent reactions to the report.

“The tools are available if the NDC thinks he [the governor] has broken the Act. Parliament should trigger the process,” he said.

He, however, mentioned that he is aware the BoG Governor is burdened with a liability that has been transferred. During the discourse, he said he had been in various meetings where the BoG had been called by the Finance Committee in Parliament to answer questions and during such meetings, he observed that a significant portion of the debts had been documented in the years preceding his assumption of office.

“I am convinced that Addison is carrying more or less a transferred liability and I’m more convinced that although there were issues that had to do with our own government, a lot of the liability we have to carry to a larger extent was also borne by the global crises we went through,” he noted.

He, thus, concluded that: “with the picketing they can be there for 100 years  it will amount to nothing. The reason is very simple. Trigger the process that can resolve this. If Ghana is what you’re thinking about, use the legitimate process to get Addison out of office,” he noted.

  • Shatta Wale reveals the inspiration behind his song popular track ‘On God’

Shatta Wale reveals the inspiration behind his song popular track ‘On God’

Shatta Wale, the king of Ghana’s dancehall, has revealed what motivated him to write the song “One God.”

In 2022, Shatta Wale surprised his fans with an Afrobeat-Gospel tune titled ‘On God’. The song was well received by Ghanaians, and the 3:15-minute song became the new jam during that time.

The dancehall artist appeared as a guest on Giovanni Caleb’s TV3 show Showbiz 360.

Out of curiosity, Giovanni asked Shatta Wale what state he was in when he composed ‘On God’.

Shatta Wale then replied to him by saying that the song came about after he received some negative vibes from Ghanaians who were comparing him to other artistes like Black Sherif.

He included that he is prayerful and thus prayed to God about the situation he found himself in, and within that same time, ‘On God’ was written and recorded.

“Okay, with that one, I will be real about that. As I was in America, people were talking about me, comparing me to people and stuff. For instance, when Black Sherif dropped his single, everybody started saying a whole lot of things”.

“And I also pray a lot, and I was like, God, you can’t let these people get us like that. Let’s do something. So, within like 45 minutes, I played the beats, recorded everything, and went to sleep,” he said.

Shatta Wale further stated that his colleague, Jupitar, was very supportive, as he helped the song gain traction and also played a part in the video’s direction.

“I sent the song to Jupitar, who was also in America. He was surprised when he heard the song. So, Jupiter gave me the motivation to put the song out and shoot a video. Jupiter also helped in directing the video, as well as pushing the song. It is good like that,” he said.

According to Ola, Lola’s big tummy has been an issue for him, and it’s best they both go their separate ways because he can no longer stay with her.

In a series of screenshots shared by Lola on Twitter, Ola wouldn’t barge despite her pleadings for him to reconsider his decision of breaking up with her despite everything they have been through.

She even promised to work on her tummy yet still, Ola stood his ground and mentioned that he was not going to give in to her plea.

Sharing the screenshots, Lola captioned them: “To say the least, I’m broken, I couldn’t do anything quick about reducing my stomach and I lost my 3-year relationship ???.. I somehow still feel the pain till now??”

  • Martin Kpebu labels Ghanaian politicians as “Crooks” and “Bad boys and girls”

Prominent legal expert, Martin Kpebu, has pointed the blame at Ghanaian politicians for hindering the country’s advancement in its development journey.

He expressed that among Ghana’s politicians, the sole example of a “righteous” figure was the late ex-President, John Evans Atta Mills, who consistently prioritized the nation’s welfare over his own.

During an interview on Asempa FM, Kpebu conveyed these statements and characterized the other politicians in Ghana as individuals with criminal intentions, solely focused on personal financial gains.

“Politicians are usually crooks… bad boys and girls. NDC, NPP, all of them are crooks. Apart from Atta Mills who did not steal from us, the rest are crooks… Atta Mills was an honest man, the rest have been dribbled with corruption.

“We must have a special session on politicians and profile them, otherwise they would keep deceiving Ghanaians, these are crooks.

“… you would be there and your classmate who is not even doing well like you are, gets a position and all of a sudden, he builds a mansion. These guys are causing us headaches,” he said in Twi.

He added that politicians would lead Ghana to its end if Ghanaians remain silent on how they have been stealing from the country.

He said that the amounts of money reported to have been found at the home and in bank accounts of the former Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources, Cecilia Dapaah, show the kind of mayhem politicians are causing the country.

The lawyer added that if the homes and bank accounts of Ghanaian politicians are searched, the monies that would be recovered would be enough to transform the country.

Lakhimpur case: Two men given life in prison for raping and hanging of Indian sisters

Two men were given life sentences by a court in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh for raping and killing two Dalit sisters last year.

Two further prisoners were sentenced to six years in prison each after being found guilty of deleting evidence. The defendants will probably file an appeal with the high court.

In September, the adolescent females were discovered hanging from a tree in the Lakhimpur district.

The horrific incident had garnered media attention and aroused widespread indignation.

Six persons were detained by the police; four of them were found guilty on Friday, and two children are now awaiting verdicts.

Two of the four adults were found guilty on Friday by a special court that hears cases involving the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso), of kidnapping, gangraping, and killing the girls.

Judge Rahul Singh stated on Monday that the two defendants’ life sentences will “run until their last breath” and that the crime was among the “rarest of the rare”. Additionally, they each must pay a fine of 41,000 rupees ($500; £390).

The bodies of the two girls, ages 17 and 15, were discovered hanging on September 14 in the neighbourhood of their home in Tamoli Purva hamlet, around 124 miles (more than 200 kilometres) from Lucknow, the state capital.

Police had detained each of the six suspects less than twenty-four hours after the murder.

According to the police, the girls had “willingly gone” on their bike with several of the accused since they were friends with them. According to them, the accused raped and strangled the girls while pressuring them to be married, and subsequently, with the assistance of their friends, hanged the victims from a tree.

However, the girls’ family had cast doubt on the inquiry and claimed that the accused had abducted the sisters from somewhere other than their house.

The relatives of the accused, who maintained their sons were innocent, also refuted the police claim.

  • At least 30 people missing after jade mine landslip in Myanmar

At least 30 people missing after jade mine landslip in Myanmar

Following a mudslide at a jade mine in northern Myanmar, at least 30 persons are reported missing.

The largest and most profitable jade mines in the world are located in the hilly town of Hpakant in the Kachin state.

Many of people impacted are thought to be locals, many of whom work and live in abandoned mine pits, who are sifting through the muck along the cliffs.

When Myanmar experiences severe monsoon rains between May and October, deadly landslides frequently occur in the region.

In the same region, a landslip claimed at least 162 lives in July 2020, while an accident in 2015 claimed more than 110 lives.

The rainy season has forced the suspension of mining operations. But many of the victims of the disaster, which occurred on Sunday at around 15:30 local time, were independent scavengers seeking for jade.

As a result of the heavy rain, enormous heaps of soil that were left over from mining company excavations that were more than 150 metres high became loose, rushing down the cliff and picking up miners in the process.

Additionally, survivors have related how they were mining for jade when a wall of dirt, pebbles, and floodwater engulfed them.

Hundreds of illegal mines have left their scars on the environment in this region of Myanmar. These draw a sizable number of migrant workers from various regions of the nation who travel there in quest of jade, the majority of which is sold in China.

34 individuals were reported missing, eight were hurt, and were carried to a hospital on Sunday, one rescue worker told the Associated Press.

Although several miners had already returned to the scene in the hopes of discovering jade, he claimed that search and rescue operations were still ongoing.

The rescue worker, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he was concerned about being detained by the military, stated, “We haven’t found any dead bodies yet.”

The military administration of Myanmar relies heavily on revenue from the jade mining industry. Additionally, it supports the Kachin Independence Army, an armed ethnic force.

Because of the jade mines there, which are thought to be worth about $30 billion (£23.6 billion) a year, the military and Kachin militants have struggled for control of this region of the Kachin State for many years.

There have been numerous clashes there both before and after the military takeover in 2021 that toppled the Aung San Suu Kyi-led civilian government.

Tanzania detains politician and a lawyer during port protest

A lawyer and an opposition politician were detained by Tanzanian police on charges of inciting and plotting to organise massive rallies intended to topple the government.

Through an attorney, Mpaluka Nyagali and Boniface Anyasile Mwabukusi both denied wrongdoing.

According to Human Rights Watch, this follows the imprisonment or threat of prosecution of 22 people who had opposed parliament for authorising a port management agreement between Tanzania and an Emirati corporation.

The Tanzanian government has been accused of selling off its nation, although this accusation has been refuted by activists, people, and opposition leaders.

The lack of a time frame for the end of Emirati management of the ports in the deal particularly worries critics.

According to Tanzanian activist Maria Sarungi-Tsehai, who spoke on the BBC’s Newsday show, the country’s human rights situation has been deteriorating and there has been significant public opposition to the port contract, which has resulted in crackdowns.

“Mostly citizens who are not politicians” were being targeted, and she claimed that “it’s never been this bad.”

The two arrested, according to her, were transferring the matter to a higher court for an appeal when they were detained. They had been involved in a case at a regional court seeking to prevent an Emirati corporation from managing Tanzania’s ports, which they lost.

Moesha Boduong claims she is John Dumelo’s mistress

Actress Moesha Boduong has opened up about an alleged affair with actor and politician, John Dumelo.

In an Instagram post, she alleged to have had an affair with the married actor.

Moesha described herself as ‘John Dumelo’s mistress’ in her post.

She wrote: “Sexiest woman of God😍John Dumelo mistress 😍,”

Moesha has been pressing necks in such a fashion since she fell ill and went off social media for a while, then returned when she was ‘healed’.

Whatever healing was carried out on her doesn’t seem to have worked much as Moesha continues to post confusing content seemingly disconnected from reality. For instance, she claimed just a few days ago that she’s Akufo-Addo’s sidechick and now it appears John Dumelo has also been added to her ‘list’.

Check out Moesha Boduong’s post below…

This post comes at a time when John Dumelo is celebrating once again becoming the NDC’s Ayawaso West Wuogon parliamentary candidate.

Dumelo won the contest that was initially postponed after his friend turned foe, Fred Nuamah, dropped out of the contest.

“Yesterday I was declared the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency NDC parliamentary candidate for the 2024 general elections. Thanks to everyone who made this possible. I really appreciate it. Together let’s win this seat. This is our time. #idey4u #givechangechance,” John Dumelo had declared in a post shared to Facebook.

  • Russian rouble depreciates versus US dollar to 16-month low

Russian rouble depreciates versus US dollar to 16-month low

The value of the Russian rouble has reached its lowest point in 16 months and surpassed 100 against the US dollar.

The drop occurs as pressure on the Russian economy mounts as military spending for the Ukraine war increases and imports grow faster than exports.

Western nations have imposed sanctions on Russia as a result of its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

After the war initially started, the rouble fell, but was later supported by capital controls and oil and gas exports.

Although its value has varied over the war, it has generally lost roughly 25% of its value versus the dollar since the invasion of Ukraine.

The rouble was trading at 101.04 to the dollar earlier on Monday. Since the US dollar is often regarded as the most powerful currency in the world, the more roubles it takes to buy one dollar indicates that the currency is weakening.

Despite stating that it sees no threat to the nation’s financial stability, the central bank of Russia has indicated that a crucial interest rate increase is possible.

The rouble has been “weakening gradually” this year, according to Jane Foley, managing director at Rabobank London, who also noted that “the pace has picked up since late July.”

She continued, “The rouble’s weakness reflects a weakening fundamental backdrop in Russia,” noting that the nation’s budget was in deficit and that it was dependent on imports from Turkey and China but was under pressure to increase exports.

Russ Mould, investment director at AJ Bell, claimed that Western sanctions were hurting Russia’s trade and therefore its economy, “especially for oil and gas.”

Since the start of the war, many EU nations that relied on Russian oil and gas have vowed to gradually reduce their imports and find substitute supplies.

G7 and EU leaders unveiled a price cap plan in December 2022 with the intention of reducing the amount of money Russia can make from oil exports by attempting to maintain the price below $60 per barrel. This has contributed to the decline in the value of Russia’s oil exports.

Additionally, Russia shut off the gas supply to Europe, raising concerns about blackouts. Germany, a former major importer, declared in January that it no longer relied on the country’s fossil resources for its energy needs.

Presidential adviser detained in UK on suspicion of gem bribery

The chief of staff for the president of Madagascar has been accused of asking a gem mining company for a bribe in the UK.

Romy Andrianarisoa and a companion are accused of offering permits in Madagascar for about £225,000 to the British company Gemfields.

She and her friend Philippe Tabuteau are accused of asking for, consenting to receive, or taking a bribe.

After a brief court hearing on Saturday, both were ordered to remain in detention.

The National Crime Agency (NCA) has accused Ms. Andrianarisoa, 46, and Mr. Tabuteau, a 54-year-old French national, of attempting to get a 5% ownership stake in any initiatives undertaken by Gemfields Madagascar.

According to the agency, the two were detained on Thursday afternoon in central London’s Victoria neighbourhood at a meeting when they were allegedly trying to solicit bribes.

Head of the NCA’s international corruption division Andy Kelly stated: “I am grateful to Gemfields for bringing this matter to our attention and for their ongoing cooperation with the investigation.”

Ms. Andrianarisoa and Mr. Tabuteau were both remanded in custody after their court appearance on Saturday and are scheduled to return on September 8 at Southwark Crown Court.

The alleged crimes’ licences were not identified by the NCA

  • Astronomical mystery discovered by NASA telescope in outer space

Astronomical mystery discovered by NASA telescope in outer space

One of the most recent photographs taken by NASA‘s James Webb Space Telescope was photobombed by a cosmic object that resembled a luminous question mark, and scientists believe they know what it could be.

Herbig-Haro 46/47, a pair of young stars, were shown in the initial near-infrared photograph, which was published on July 26. The stars, which can be found 1,470 light-years away in the Vela constellation of the Milky Way galaxy, are still actively developing and are in close orbits around one another.

Since the 1950s, ground- and space-based telescopes have viewed and studied the two, but the very sensitive Webb telescope has produced the sharpest and most detailed image ever. Compared to other space telescopes, it can observe the universe using longer wavelengths of light.

The Webb telescope sheds light on knowledge about the universe’s beginnings, but the presence of this enigmatic object in the image’s background raises more questions than it does answers. Since the cosmic question mark hasn’t been closely seen or investigated, scientists are unsure of the object’s history and composition.

But based on its form and location, they do have a few theories.

According to Matt Caplan, an assistant professor of physics at Illinois State University, “the very first thing you can rule out is that it’s a star in the Milky Way.” Because stars are point-like, they constantly have these enormous spikes. Diffraction is a phenomenon that mostly results from the edges of the mirrors and the struts that support the type of camera in the middle.

If you look closely, you can typically see six or eight stellar “prongs” with the Webb telescope, Caplan added. He described the apparition as having the shape of a question mark as “it tells you immediately that it’s not a star.”

According to Christopher Britt, an education and outreach scientist in the office of public outreach at the Space Telescope Science Institute, which oversees the science operations of the Webb telescope, it could be a merger of two galaxies that are much more distant than Herbig-Haro 46/47 at a distance of likely billions of light-years apart.

“Many, many galaxies outside of our own Milky Way,” stated Britt. As galaxies expand and change over cosmic time, they occasionally collide with their nearby neighbours, and this seems to be a rather common occurrence.

And when that occurs, they can deform into a variety of shapes, including, presumably, a question mark.

The merging of galaxies into a question mark-like shape has occurred previously, including a reverse version made by the Antennae Galaxies in the Corvus constellation, however it is likely the first time this particular item has been seen, according to specialists. Additionally, Britt noted that most galaxies have seen a number of brief contacts like this during their histories.

Nothing can be anchored in space, according to Caplan. “The sun is moving as it orbits the galaxy, and the galaxy, being made of stars, is moving in whichever direction gravity pulls it.”

Our galaxy will eventually merge with the Andromeda galaxy in around 4 billion years, although it is unknown how they will look. This integration is also our galaxy’s ultimate fate, according to Britt.

It’s also possible that the shape of the question mark is “indicative of a merger where these two galaxies are interacting gravitationally,” according to Britt. “That hook of the question mark on top looks a lot like what we refer to as a tidal tail, where the stream of stars and gas has kind of been ripped off and flown out into space,” the observer said.

More spectroscopic information on the object would provide additional information, including its distance and chemical make-up, according to Britt and Caplan.

However, no one will do this since it is extremely similar to the story of the “local man who finds a chicken tender that looks like George Washington,” Caplan added. But if you were driven enough, you could make some observations.

16 killed by severe rains in northern India while 25 more trapped beneath collapsed temple

On Monday, flooding forced a temple in the northern Indian state of Himachal Pradesh to collapse, killing nine people and trapping up to 25 more. Seven more persons have died as a result of heavy rains elsewhere in the state.

During a visit to the temple site on Monday, the state’s chief minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu informed Indian news agency ANI that the famed tourist destination’s temple had collapsed at 8 a.m. local time.

The deceased’s remains have been found, and the “local administration is diligently working to clear the debris,” Sukhu wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter) on Monday.

He noted that while rescue efforts are ongoing, between 20 to 25 individuals are still trapped. Five people have so far been saved.

Sukhu wrote on X on Monday that he was “devastated to hear about the loss” after learning that seven more persons had perished in the Solan district on Monday due to a cloudburst.

Sukhu continued, “We have instructed the authorities to guarantee that the afflicted families receive the appropriate assistance and support at this tough time.

Sukhu urged residents to stay inside and avoid going near rivers and other landslide-prone locations.

Due to the continued heavy rain and the Indian Meteorological Department issuing a red advisory for the state, traffic police authorities have also advised the general population to stay home.

Social media posts and videos show demolished highways and downed trees, while water flowing down hillsides sends enormous rocks flying.

One of the states most severely impacted by the current monsoon season is Himachal Pradesh. across the month of July, landslides and flash floods across the state claimed the lives of over 30 people.

According to some scientists, the chaotic and unpredictable monsoon season in India is being caused by the human-induced climate disaster.

  • The effects of sugar-sweetened beverages on health

The effects of sugar-sweetened beverages on health

Sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) are drinks with added caloric sweeteners, constituting the primary source of dietary added sugar.

They include carbonated and non-carbonated soft drinks/sodas, flavored/fruit juice drinks, sports drinks, energy drinks, sweetened tea and coffee drinks, and electrolyte replacement drinks.

Added sugars include brown sugar, corn sweetener, corn syrup, dextrose, fructose, glucose, high- fructose corn syrup, honey, lactose, maltose, malt syrup, molasses, raw sugar and sucrose. In fact there are over 200 added sugars with some disguised under non suspecting names such as caramel, agave nectar etc.

Even though added sugar is found in many processed foods, the sugar added to beverages tends to make them highly calorific with little or no micronutrients to aid metabolism (Empty-calories).

Globally, the consumption of SSBs has increased significantly in both high- and low-income countries and tends to differ considerably by gender, geographic location, socio-economic status, and age. Males, adolescents, and young adults as well as people in the lower socio-economic bracket, are the heaviest consumers of these drinks. However, young infants and toddlers consume a lot of sugary drinks, primarily fruit drinks, and sodas.

In Ghana and many other LMICs, fruit drinks/sodas are widely consumed by young children, and many parents mistakenly believe that these drinks are healthy, potentially due to front-of-package claims and imagery.

Similarly, adolescents and many young adults are deceived by false claims in advertisements for drinks, particularly energy drinks, and have resorted to overconsuming these SSBs at every opportunity (parties, outdooring/naming and marriage ceremonies).

Generally, the overconsumption of unhealthy diets with high levels of calories and low micronutrients accounts for malnutrition in many populations. SSBs are noted to be highly calorific and very poor in other nutrients, which is why they are referred to as having empty calories.

Sugar, which is the primary ingredient in SSBs, has been shown to have addictive properties much like cocaine and caffeine.

This addiction stems from the activation of the reward centers of the brain by the intake of large quantities of sugar, to release dopamine and other hormones that create a feeling of euphoria. Since SSBs contain large amounts of sugar, when consumed, they cause a ‘rush’ which may lead to extremely addictive behaviour and even bigger cravings.

Dopamine is a chemical associated with the experience of pleasure. It is little wonder why many people, especially adolescents and young adults, have taken to the overconsumption of these SSBs in response to satisfying their pleasurable desires.

Many people consume too much sugar from drinks and foods that contain added sugar. However, consuming too much added sugar, and even natural sweeteners, can lead to serious health problems. Research shows that getting sugar in liquid form is much worse than getting it from solid food.

This is why high-sugar beverages (SSBs) are among the worst things you can put into your body. The fact is, too much sugar is bad for your heart, kidneys, liver, pancreas, and brain. When you consume added sugar, your pancreas must produce insulin to normalize your blood sugar (glucose) levels.

Overconsumption of added sugar will cause your pancreas to work overtime and most likely get damaged. The kidneys are also kicked into action to help eliminate any excess solutes provided by the sugars taken in, which can lead to its failure.

Also, drinking sugary drinks can spike inflammation levels, and this effect can last for a considerable amount of time to cause many problems to underlying connective tissues. In fact, the body requires no added sugars to function properly and can rely mainly on dietary starches for its sugar (glucose) provisions.

Consuming these goods (SSBs) raises calorie consumption overall and may replace healthier foods in the diet, which may result in weight gain and an increased risk of type 2 diabetes, obesity, obesity-related cancers, hypertension, coronary heart disease, liver damage, stomach problems, bone disease, infertility, and tooth decay, which are the conditions described as non-communicable diseases (NCDs).

Indeed, NCDs are the leading cause of death worldwide and Ghana is no exception. While NCDs have been known for a long time to be major in causing deaths occurring worldwide, there are currently new ones emerging especially in LMICs.

In the United States, consumption of SSBs by adolescents and children has been linked to less healthy diets, excessive caloric intake and weight gain, increased obesity rates, and associated adverse health effects, including increased rates of type 2 diabetes in adulthood and dental caries in children. More evidence is accruing globally to the fact that increased consumption of SSBs heightens the risk of overweight and obesity and the development of metabolic disorders such as diabetes, and metabolic syndrome, which can shorten life expectancy by several years. Thus, the health implications of SSBs have drawn significant attention from the scientific community and the general public.

Consuming SSBs is also known to be associated with unhealthy behaviors. For instance, adults and adolescents who smoke, do not get enough sleep, are physically inactive, often eat fast foods, and do not eat fruits regularly are more likely to consume SSBs frequently. Furthermore, frequent consumers of SSBs have also been shown to have more screen time and often indulge/overindulge in the viewing of movies/videos and playing games on television, phones, computers, etc).

From a public health perspective, it is imperative that some actions are put in place to stem the rising tide of SSBs consumption. Limiting sugary drink intake can help individuals maintain a healthy weight and have healthy dietary patterns. Environmental interventions, which are aimed at the social and physical environments which can influence the population’s choice of beverages as well as behaviour change interventions; targeted at the population’s motivations, knowledge, and attitudes on SSB consumption, are necessary. If these interventions are not put in place, SSBs are likely to become more affordable and more widely consumed, especially in LMICs in the near future which will continue to adversely affect the health of populations.

The Advocating for Ghana’s Health (A4H) Coalition, comprising Academia and Civil Society Organisations, derives motivation from this and therefore seeks to create a favorable environment and stakeholder buy-in for food-related fiscal policies (particularly SSB tax) in Ghana through advocacy and scholar activism. The coalition believes that it is the responsibility of the Government to protect, promote and assure the health of its citizens by reducing the availability, accessibility, and affordability of SSBs, and will not relent on its call to the government of Ghana to implement evidence-informed interventions such as SSB tax to address this menace.

  • Ghana has an inadequate school library system – Library Authority CEO

Ghana has an inadequate school library system – Library Authority CEO

Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Library Authority, Hayford Siaw, has refuted the widespread belief that Ghanaians do not like reading.

During an interview on Monday, August 14, 2023, he boldly contested the prevailing notion, asserting that the conducive environment and atmosphere have yet to be established.

He also attributed the assertion to the scarcity of libraries in Ghana.

“Historically, in 1970 there was research done by the Ghana Library Authority, British Council and the Ministry of Education to really understand why there’s the perception out there that Ghanaians don’t like reading.

“And one of the outcomes was that we have a very poor school library system in this country. So it’s not a recent issue,” he said.

He expressed concern over the unfortunate reality that many schools are built without libraries, which significantly hinders the development of a reading culture.

“We build schools, we’ve refused to set up libraries, we refuse to put in the book resources, we refuse to have professionals to even go to the schools to manage the libraries in the schools.

“So look at most schools across the country and ask if they have a professional school available to them,” he said.

“If we really want to build the culture of reading, you don’t only tackle the Senior High Level, we need to tackle the basic level as well. So right from class one to JHS 3, we make sure we have a school library and professionals there to be able to support,” he added.

  • Russia opens fire and boards cargo ship in the Black Sea

Russia opens fire and boards cargo ship in the Black Sea

Russia’s defence ministry said that on Sunday, a Russian warship in the Black Sea fired warning shots and boarded a cargo ship that it believes was sailing to Ukraine.

In July, Russia withdrew from a pact that had been negotiated by the UN and Turkey to allow Ukraine to transport its grain across the Black Sea and issued a warning that any ships sailing towards Ukraine would be seen as potentially carrying weapons. Ships heading to Russian ports were threatened in a similar manner by Ukraine.

The dry cargo ship, flying the flag of Palau, was ordered to stop for an inspection, but the skipper allegedly ignored the order and fired warning shots.

According to the statement, the Russian navy “opened warning fire from automatic small arms fire to forcefully stop the vessel.”

The ship, Sukru Okan, according to the ministry, was sailing for the Ukrainian port of Izmail. According to marine traffic statistics, the cargo ship is currently en route to the nearby Izmail port of Sulina in Romania. Regarding whether or not the ship was en route to a Ukrainian port, Kiev did not immediately respond.

The patrol ship Vasily Bykov lifted a Ka-29 helicopter carrying a detachment of Russian servicemen to check the bulk cargo ship, the ministry reported. According to the statement, “Following radio conversations, the ship changed course, and the boarding team landed on the bulk cargo ship.”

This week, Ukraine declared that it would permit temporary humanitarian passage for ships to and from its ports and that registration for commercial ships using the maritime route had begun.

Both Russia and Ukraine are significant grain producers, and their agreement—a rare point of consensus in the midst of a war—contributed significantly to price stabilisation.

Russia’s pullout, according to Kyiv, is equivalent to an embargo of Ukrainian goods. Russia has long lamented its inability to export its own food.

The temporary routes, according to a spokesperson for the Ukrainian Navy named Dmytro Pletenchuk, aim to address the world food security crisis and will enable shipowners and businesses to “finally take back their merchant vessels that are in humanitarian captivity due to the constant threats of Russians at sea.”

Pletenchuk stated that ship owners and captains have been alerted to the threat and that the Ukrainian Armed Forces will assist in ensuring the security of the merchant ships passing through the passageways, with the Navy “doing everything we can to ensure security.”

Given the risks involved, it is yet uncertain when ships might use the route.

Michy shaves off Majesty’s dread locs to please Shatta Wale

Shatta Wale and Michy’s son, Majesty, now has a new hairstyle, and netizens are reacting.

The 8-year-old boy has since had dread locs, a situation, his father had consistently complained about.

Shatta previously stated his disapproval of Majesty‘s locs in an interview with Andy Dosty, saying that he had no input on the decision to grow them.

Emphasising the fact that he isn’t a fan of dreadlocks, the dancehall artiste said a full-grown man like him, hasn’t even dreamt of keeping such a hairstyle.

“I don’t like that hair. he will grow up to decide for himself. I am an artiste but I don’t want my kid like that but you know he is with his mum and doesn’t know anything. He will grow up to see that even his father is not a Rasta man because I have my future plans. I have plans of trimming my hair and going completely bald when I become a veteran,” Shatta stated.

Michy has, however, complied with Shatta’s request.

In a new development, she shared a video of Majesty at a barbershop with his dreadlocks completely cut off.

The said video was spotted on her Snapchat, in which the last moments of her son‘s hair were captured.

  • Taiwan won’t be deterred by China’s threats – William Lai

Taiwan won’t be deterred by China’s threats – William Lai

Taiwan’s vice president and potential presidential candidate declared on Sunday while travelling through the United States that his country will never capitulate in the face of escalating Chinese threats, contradicting Beijing’s criticism of his visit.

William Lai, a front-runner in the Taiwanese presidential election in January, stopped in New York on his way to Paraguay, where he will be present for the country’s new president’s inauguration on Tuesday.

Only 13 nations, including this one from South America, have formal diplomatic ties with Taiwan, a self-governing democracy that China’s ruling Communist Party claims as its own despite never having had any kind of control over it.

Lai framed Taiwan’s long-term survival as something the world community should be concerned about in an address to supporters at a luncheon banquet in New York.

“When Taiwan is safe, the world is safe, and when there is peace on the Taiwan Strait, there will be world peace,” Lai reportedly remarked, according to Taiwan’s presidential office.

“No matter how great the threat of authoritarianism is to Taiwan, we absolutely will not be scared nor cower, and we will uphold the values of democracy and freedom.”

Lai made his remarks after the Chinese foreign ministry denounced his visit and referred to him as a “trouble maker through and through.”

China, it was stated, vehemently opposes any official contact between the US and Taiwan as well as any “‘Taiwan independence’ separatists to the US.”

Lai’s transits, which include a stop in San Francisco on his way back on Wednesday, have been described as usual by both Taiwan and the US.

A senior administration source told CNN on July 16 that such transits were “fairly common” and that they were “unofficial, in keeping with our US One China policy.”

In January 2022, Lai last travelled via the US.

Lai, 63, is a member of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), which is in power, and is noted for being more overtly pro-independence. This group is known as the “deep green” camp.

Former physician turned politician with a Harvard education has described himself in the past as a “pragmatic worker for Taiwanese independence.”

Beijing, which has not renounced the use of force to capture the self-governing island, has grown particularly hostile to him as a result.

But after obtaining the DPP nomination, Lai has changed his stance on China.

Beijing has increased economic, diplomatic, and military pressure on Taiwan under the direction of Xi Jinping, particularly in the wake of President Tsai Ing-wen’s 2016 victory and subsequent election to a second term in office in 2020.

Tsai is ineligible to run for a third term under Taiwan’s constitution.

In January, Taiwan will hold elections that might have a significant impact on world relations at a time when Xi’s potential to fulfil his promise to “reunite” the island with China is being closely watched.

The Kuomintang, a political group that was originally the Chinese Communist Party’s fiercest foe but has subsequently changed to support far closer ties with Beijing, is the DPP’s historical rival.

Since the US and the government of Taiwan do not have formal diplomatic relations, travel by Taiwanese officials to the US is referred to as “transits” rather than “visits” because the stopovers are part of an unofficial trip en route to another location.

Despite Beijing’s warnings and threats, Taiwan’s President Tsai visited California in March and spoke with US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy. China began three days of live-fire military drills surrounding Taiwan after Tsai’s tour.

  • Four drowned farmers’ bodies retrieved from Golinga Dam

Four drowned farmers’ bodies retrieved from Golinga Dam

Tragically, four farmers died when a canoe carrying seven people capsized in the Golinga Dam in the Tolon District of the Northern Region.

The terrible incident happened as the victims, who were Galinkpegu villagers, were returning from their fields on the western side of the Golinga Dam.

On Saturday, August 12, three bodies were successfully retrieved around 4 pm, while the fourth body was recovered on Sunday, August 13.

According to a report by Myjoyonline.com, the deceased have been identified as Alhassan Zakaria (40), Yakubu Danah (45), Alhassan Musah (45), and Issah Baako (46).

The recovered bodies of Alhassan Zakaria, Yakubu Danah, Alhassan Musah, and Issah Baako were subjected to rituals at the dam’s bank before their respective burials.

Similar rituals are currently being performed for the last body before its final interment.

According to one of the survivors, the canoe tilted due to uneven weight distribution while they were paddling back. Residents from Galinkpegu and Gbalahagu came to the rescue, managing to save Masahodu Issah, Dana Nablido, and Sadiq Yussif, who swam to the bank. The other four individuals were unable to escape the tragedy and drowned.

A team of officials from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), led by District Director Abdullah Salifu, successfully recovered the fourth body from the water. The Golinga Dam is a vital irrigation site utilized by local farmers for their agricultural needs in the area.

Incidents like these have unfortunately become common in Ghana, often attributed to the lack of life jackets among rural dwellers who engage in such activities.

  • Oppong-Nkrumah backs Bawumia as NPP flagbearer

Oppong-Nkrumah backs Bawumia as NPP flagbearer

Minister of Information Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah has thrown his weight behind Vice President Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia’s aspiration to become the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the upcoming 2024 elections.

He expressed his respect for Dr Bawumia‘s significant contributions to the party over the years during an event in his district that was captured on camera and uploaded on Twitter.

Describing Bawumia as a steadfast pillar of the NPP, Nkrumah highlighted the vice president’s unwavering commitment to defending the party whenever it faces challenges. He also commended Bawumia’s humility and dedicated approach to party matters.

“Today, I want to share something with you. Ever since I became acquainted with Dr. Bawumia in 2008 when he was at the Bank of Ghana and I was at Joy FM, and throughout our political journey, I have silently learned some invaluable lessons from him.”

“Whenever the party finds itself under attack, Dr. Bawumia consistently steps forward to shield it, even at the risk of facing personal criticisms. His commitment to this cause has been unwavering.”

Nkrumah went on to underscore the principle of reciprocating good with good, emphasizing the significance of acknowledging Bawumia’s dedication and contributions to the NPP. He stressed that Bawumia’s devoted service to the party merits support rather than opposition.

Citing Proverbs 17:13, Nkrumah quoted, “Whoever repays evil for good, evil will never depart from their house. So, if Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has been beneficial to us, should we respond with negativity?”

He further stated, “In this month, our Chairman and I will cast our votes for him (Dr. Bawumia), and come November, delegates from Ofoase Ayirebi will wholeheartedly support Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.”

Dr. Bawumia is among ten contenders vying for the flagbearership slot, with prominent figures such as former trade minister Alan Kyerematen and Kennedy Agyapong considered his key rivals.

Following the vetting stage, the NPP will narrow down the ten candidates to five in a preliminary vote scheduled for August. The final contest is set for November 2023, where the party will elect a successor to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as the party’s leader.

  • Escalating unemployment and soaring living costs have left the youth in despair – Mahama

Escalating unemployment and soaring living costs have left the youth in despair – Mahama

National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, John Dramani Mahama, has stated that if the NDC emerges victorious in the 2024 presidential election, his government will implement measures aimed at addressing youth unemployment.

In a statement to mark International Youth Day, the ex-president emphasized that the significant increase in unemployment statistics was a major cause for concern.

He also noted that the cost of living has left many young people feeling hopeless with no opportunities in sight.

“NDC administration will work urgently to equip our youth with the entrepreneurial knowledge and skills needed for a sustainable future,” he said in a Facebook post.

According to him, a 24-hour economy with incentives and tax breaks for manufacturers will be introduced under a new NDC government.

The move he explained will increase recruitment numbers which will eventually financially empower young people.

“We will work to ease the burden of taxes imposed by this NPP administration on Ghanaian businesses and investors, which has robbed Ghana of its envious position as one of Africa’s leading destinations for investment.

We will maximise the potential of agriculture and agribusiness and provide critical social and IT infrastructure to stimulate economic growth.

Our policy priorities will imbue our young people with the “knowledge, abilities, values and attitudes needed to live in, develop and support a sustainable and resource-efficient society” — the critical Green Skills our youth need to advance a sustainable world.”

    Below is Mahama’s Facebook post.

On International Youth Day, I celebrate the creativity, enterprise, and passion of Ghana’s youth. I want to use this occasion to highlight the importance of our young people as the driving force of positive change and innovation.

Our youth have been key agents of change and development throughout our nation’s history. To ensure a brighter future, we must empower a generation of skilled youth, create decent jobs, and support the youth to transform our country, Africa, and the world.

Rising unemployment, increasing cost of living, and lack of opportunities have left many young people feeling hopeless and are testing their sense of patriotism to the limit.

For me, John Dramani Mahama, and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), we are committed to urgently turning this situation around by paving the way for nurturing a generation of skilled youth.

A new NDC administration will work urgently to equip our youth with the entrepreneurial knowledge and skills needed for a sustainable future. We will introduce a 24-hour economy with incentives and tax breaks for manufacturers who will run extra shifts to create more room for employment.

We will work to ease the burden of taxes imposed by this NPP administration on Ghanaian businesses and investors, which has robbed Ghana of its envious position as one of Africa’s leading destinations for investment.

We will maximise the potential of agriculture and agribusiness and provide critical social and IT infrastructure to stimulate economic growth.

Our policy priorities will imbue our young people with the “knowledge, abilities, values and attitudes needed to live in, develop and support a sustainable and resource-efficient society” — the critical Green Skills our youth need to advance a sustainable world.

People matter, and by working together, we will build the Ghana we want and put the smiles back on the faces of our young people.

    Happy International Youth Day.

  • Evidence for Bazoum’s prosecution for high treason secured – Niger junta

Evidence for Bazoum’s prosecution for high treason secured – Niger junta

The Niger junta raised the stakes in its brinkmanship against important neighbours in West Africa who have sworn to restore constitutional order in the coup-torn nation on Sunday by claiming it had acquired evidence to prosecute the country’s former President Mohamed Bazoum for “high treason.”

The statement was made by the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland (CNSP), the military council that overthrew the government in July. “The Nigerien government has to date, gathered the necessary evidence to prosecute the deposed president and his local and foreign accomplices before the competent national and international authorities for high treason and undermining internal and external security of Niger,” the statement read.

Since late last month, when Bazoum was overthrown in a coup d’état by the presidential guard, Niger has been plunged in political upheaval. A volatile region of Africa plagued by coups and militant fanaticism was once again in the dark after the coup in July.

One of the few democracies still in existence in the Sahel was Niger, which is located at its centre.

Following Niger’s independence from France in 1960, there were years of military coups, which came to a stop with Bazoum’s election victory in 2021.

Following the coup, the leaders of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) imposed sanctions and gave the military junta a week to resign or face possible military intervention.

However, the military junta in Niger has received support from Mali, Burkina Faso, and Guinea, three additional West African countries that have all recently undergone military coups, raising the possibility that the conflict could escalate into a crisis for the entire region.

Bazoum has said that the junta has denied him “all human contact” and hasn’t given him food or medicine.

The CNSP refuted the claims in a statement, claiming that the expelled leader frequently consults his doctor, with the most recent visit occurring on Saturday.

The statement said that the doctor raised no concerns regarding Bazoum’s health.

West African leaders have intensified their criticism of the coup organisers in Niger and commanded the “activation and deployment” of a regional standby army to help the nation return to constitutional order.

A source told CNN on Sunday that the regional political and economic union known as ECOWAS announced the formation of a parliamentary committee that it intends to dispatch to Niger to meet with coup leaders.

The insider also stated that on Monday, committee members will initially communicate through Zoom before meeting with coup leaders, but she did not specify when this would occur. The source further stated that the parliamentary committee had 12 members and was presided over by Ahmed Idris Wase, the first deputy speaker of the ECOWAS parliament from Nigeria.

ECOWAS previously gave coup leaders until August 6 to release and restore Bazoum as president and hand over authority, failing which they would be subject to potential military intervention.

According to ECOWAS, a separate effort to meet with the Nigerien military junta on Tuesday with the African Union and the United Nations “was aborted” when the military leadership in Niamey informed them of “their unavailability to receive the tripartite delegation.”

In the meantime, in the capital city of Guinea, Conakry, self-proclaimed Niger defence chief Gen. Moussa Salaou Barmou met with Mamadi Doumbouya, the head of the junta and interim president of Guinea. In 2021, Guinea too saw a military takeover.

At the meeting on Saturday, Doumbouya declared, “We are pan-African, and we will always be there.”

Gen. Abdourahamane Tchiani, the newly appointed military chief of Niger, has also appealed to Mali for assistance despite Mali’s significantly diminished military might.

Dormaa East MP calls for digitisation of assets declaration

Dormaa East Member of Parliament, Paul Twum Barimah, has urged the Auditor General to modernize the process of assets declaration, making it available online for easy access.

He emphasised that the computerization of assets declaration for public officials enhances its accessibility to the public, allowing individuals to conveniently update their information whenever necessary.

Paul Twum Barimah believes that if the Auditor General complies strictly with the assets declaration regulations, a lot of people will be put behind bars for non-compliance.

His comment comes on the back of the Former Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources, Cecilia Dapaah’s stolen money which is being probed by the office of the Special Prosecutor to identify the source of her wealth.

Speaking with the media in Parliament, the Dormaa East MP asserted that if the Auditor general implements the computerization of the declaration of assets, it will help to hold government officials accountable with respect to their assets.

“I think it is important that the Auditor General comes out clear for us to know how we can do this. And I am calling for them to as soon as possible computerize this declaration. Give me a code, and let me be able to sit behind my machine and open it and update it. If I update it and submit it, I can’t alter it and that is the way…And if they are saying they are going strictly by law, I can confidently tell you that there are a lot of people who will be put behind bars,” he stated according to Citinewsroom.com.

There have been numerous calls for the source of Cecilia Dapaah’s funds to be established amid speculations that her wealth was ill-gotten.

The office of the Special Prosecutor is conducting an investigation into the case to identify culprits and ascertain the source of Cecilia Dapaah’s wealth.

  • Police arrest 22-year-old man for killing his father over alleged witchcraft

Police arrest 22-year-old man for killing his father over alleged witchcraft

Gombe State Police Command has arrested a 22-year-old man for allegedly killing his father, Usman Bello, with a pestle in Akko Local Government Area in Nigeria.

A statement released by the command’s spokesperson, ASP Mahid Mu’azu Abubakar, revealed this on Wednesday, August 9, 2023, as Lawan was paraded alongside other suspects arrested for various crimes in the state.

According to the PPRO, Lawan allegedly hit his father, 65, with a pestle on the head on the allegation of witchcraft.

The spokesperson said he is concerned that cases of murder are being reported and linked to witchcraft, where people alleged seeing others in their dreams and concluded that they were responsible for their plight and subsequently leading to the k!lling of the suspected witches.

The PRO said there was another case linked to witchcraft involving an old man, who sought the assistance of a young man to help him cross a stream but was equally attacked with a plank by the young man, and his body dumped in a river.

ASP Abubakar said CP Etim and the Police frown on such acts and directed that members of the public should desist from carrying out such acts because the issue of witchcraft is not in the law.

“You cannot do what we call trial by ordeal, bringing somebody, taking him to herbalists that he must confess that he is a wizard. That is trial by ordeal and is not known in the law. In a case when a person confesses by himself that yes, I am this. The law can work on him and we know what to do with him,” ASP Abubakar added.

He called on traditional rulers and religious leaders to preach against trial by ordeal because it was a serious offence, which could land the person that committed it or any party involved in the case in court.
