Guatemalans ready to vote in contentious presidential election

On August 20, a former first lady and the son of a former president will face off in Guatemala’s presidential runoff, closing a tumultuous campaign that has alarmed observers about the future of the country as inequality and corruption fuel political unrest throughout the region.

The political establishment’s choice for continuity, Sandra Torres, will face off against the anti-corruption candidate, Bernardo Arévalo, who confounded expectations by placing second in the first round of voting in June.

In the first round of voting in June, Torres received 16% of the vote, while Arévalo received 11.8%. However, more than 24% of voters cast blank or ineffective ballots, and around 40% of registered voters stayed home, which observers have linked to high levels of dissatisfaction with Guatemala’s electoral system after the state disqualified opposition candidates who spoke out against corruption.

This year’s presidential cycle, which has been marred by accusations of governmental intervention and worries of democratic backsliding, has been reenergized by outsider candidate Arévalo’s unexpected run in the second round.

Those keeping an eye on Guatemala are cautiously optimistic that the popular will will win.

“Guatemalans desired a choice on the ballot that would allow them to reject the present political order. And happily, they now have that as one of two options, said Will Freeman of Arévalo’s progressive campaign to CNN. Freeman is a fellow in Latin American studies at the Council on Foreign Relations.

Rights organisations claim that after a United Nations-backed anti-corruption commission, known as CICIG, which is credited with helping to secure hundreds of convictions, was disbanded in 2019, corruption and impunity among the nation’s political class increased. In the years that have followed, numerous judges and prosecutors connected to the commission have been compelled to leave the nation due to high rates of starvation and poverty.

The exclusion of candidates who opposed corruption during this year’s election cycle raised concerns about democratic backsliding and drew considerable criticism from the US and other Western partners.

There have also been attempts to disqualify Arévalo, who previously held the position of ambassador to Spain. On the request of Rafael Curruchiche, the head of the Special Prosecutor’s Office Against Impunity and a person on the US State Department Engels list for “corrupt and undemocratic actors,” a Guatemalan court suspended his Movimiento Semilla party.

Curruchiche said that Movimiento Semilla was under investigation for allegedly forging citizen signatures; however, Arévalo has refuted this charge.

However, after a global uproar from the US, European Union, and a group of international funders known as the G13, which also includes the United Kingdom and Canada, he was ultimately permitted to run in the first round. Torres herself made the announcement that she will halt her political candidature in support of Movimiento Semilla.

Voters’ main concerns as they travel to the polls on August 20 are unemployment, corruption, and excessive living expenses. The political system in Guatemala is dysfunctional, and whatever what candidates promise, they always act in the same way once in office, according to Freeman.

With the help of Nayib Bukele, the president of neighbouring El Salvador, Torres has committed to toughen up the nation’s anti-crime laws and to boost social programmes. Since she worked to increase cash transfers and benefits as first lady more than ten years ago, she enjoys support from people in rural areas.

The 67-year-old is the leader of Unidad Nacional de la Esperanza (UNE), one of the biggest political parties in the nation. She co-served as first lady of the nation from 2008 to 2011 with her ex-husband, the center-left former president Alvaro Colom.

Torres has run for president three times, losing to incumbent President Alejandro Giammattei in 2019. She has become one of the most recognisable figures in politics thanks to her time in the spotlight.

The former diplomat appears to be in the lead right now. Arévalo, a pragmatist from the center-left Movimiento Semilla party that he co-founded in 2017, is said to have the ability to capitalise on the general unhappiness with the present political establishment. His father, Juan José Arévalo, is credited with founding Guatemala’s social security system and served as the nation’s first democratically elected president in 1945.

As stated in his 100-day plan, if elected, fighting corruption will be the top priority. According to Freeman, Arévalo seems more concerned in ending pork barrel expenditures than in bringing criminal charges against dishonest individuals. The notion is that you should address corruption at its source and prevent non-competitive awarding of governmental contracts.

He has pledged to bring back the journalists, judges, and prosecutors who left the nation after the government shut down CICIG. Among them is Thelma Aldana, a former presidential candidate for his party who is renowned for her anti-corruption campaigns that resulted in the conviction of a former president. Aldana was not permitted to compete in the 2019 event.

Arévalo has stated that he wants Guatemala to establish relations with both Taipei and Beijing. Guatemala now recognises Taiwan.

Use legal means to remove BoG Governor

The Member of Parliament for Dormaa East, Paul Twum Barimah, has expressed strong disapproval of the Minority caucus’ intentions to stage a protest at the Bank of Ghana. The protest is aimed at demanding the resignation of the Governor and his deputies.

The NDC lawmakers on Tuesday issued a 21-day ultimatum to the management of the central bank to resign over allegations of mismanagement of the institution, or the group would mass up at the premises of the bank to compel them to step aside.

The MP for Dormaa East, Paul Twum Barimah, said the Minority must use legal means in their demand for the removal of the Bank of Ghana Governor and his deputies.

“It is about time we considered the national interest. If you think somebody has committed a crime or has broken the law, is it about picketing or using the laws? The Bank of Ghana Act clearly states how we can remove a governor, so why aren’t we using that procedure?” he asked.

“The Minority also has members on the Financial Committee of Parliament, and they can haul the governor of the bank before Parliament to answer questions. So why do we have to go and picket? Will the picketing bring back the law that has been broken?” he added.

“We need to put our country first and let us move away from this politics of picketing for everybody to see. You don’t need to try to use politics at all times because it will not help us as a country.

Drug abuse on the rise in Ejura; MP worried

Member of Parliament representing the Ejura Sekyedumase Constituency, Mohammed Bawa Braima, has raised alarm over the issue of drug misuse among the youth in that region.

The legislator expressed his distress over the increasing prevalence of marijuana consumption and the usage of other illicit drugs in Ejura.

He shared his worries following a visit to various centers where the ongoing Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) is being conducted within his electoral district.

“As parents, we have a responsibility to cater for our children. We do not have to abandon them. We have to be there for them all the time. We cannot send them to school and abandon them. We have a responsibility to provide them with the care they need to be responsible adults.

The rate of abuse of marijuana and hard drugs is alarming. It will not benefit our children. These things are caused by negative influences, and as parents, we have to protect our children.”

“Some of the young people are abusing drugs,” he continued, “and I am concerned.” That is why I am pleading with parents to be patient and care for their children. When I have the opportunity to speak about these topics, I emphasise the need for us to speak out against drug use. It will devastate and ruin our society, and as parents, we must advise our children to avoid narcotics.”

Suspected gay stripped naked at Bibiani Ahwiaso

A young man who was suspected of being gay was forcibly stripped of his clothes and made to walk through the streets of the Bibiani Ahwiaso Bekwai Municipality in the Western North Region.

The victim was allegedly confronted by a group of young men who accused him of engaging in a “demonic act.”

According to reports by oyerepafmonline.com, the victim, identified as a resident of Bibiani Old Compound, had travelled to the community of Hwenampori in the Bibiani township to meet another young man with whom he had expressed interest.

The young man who lured the victim to the location revealed his perspective on the incident.

He stated, “I was buying rice one day when he approached me… when I went to listen to him, he claimed he lost my contact, and I willingly gave it to him despite not knowing him before.

“He told me that he wanted to date me and take care of me… so I asked him how and at the time I was coughing, so he said he could get me drugs and other things…”

We later arranged for him to visit me so that we can have a sexual encounter, the victim added, stating that he had set up gadgets to record the guy in question.

“My friends were there but I was recording him at the time, so he came and as he was about to remove his dress my friends came there and stripped him naked, so we took him through the entire town and the boys wanted to beat him to death but one of my friends saved him and we handed him to the police.”

The victim was injured, and it took the intervention of another community leader, Sibo, who told the attackers not to attack him but rather hand over to the police for the law to

Funeral service held for assassinated Ecuador presidential contender Fernando Villavicencio

In a private ceremony held on Friday night in the nation’s capital, the body of the assassinated Ecuadorian presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio was laid to rest.

According to his campaign staff, the 59-year-old was buried in the Monteolivo cemetery in Quito’s north.

They claimed that the funeral took place in complete secrecy, with police officers and his nearest family accompanying the casket.

Villavicencio, an anti-corruption activist and congressman who spoke out against the carnage brought on by drug trafficking in the nation, was shot and killed on Wednesday during a campaign rally in Quito.

Villavicencio was assassinated just 10 days before the first round of the presidential election was scheduled to take place. Villavicencio belonged to the Movimiento Construye political party.

Six suspects, all of whom are gang members and citizens of Colombia, were reportedly detained by authorities on Thursday in connection with his murder. Although it is yet unknown what country the suspected shooter was from, he passed away earlier while in police custody.

The Andean country, which was until a few years ago a relatively calm country, is now afflicted by a worsening security crisis caused by drug trafficking and a turf war between competing criminal organisations.

As criminal organisations compete to control and distribute narcotics, particularly cocaine, the Pacific coast of Ecuador has seen the most violence.

The assassination sparked a global outcry of disapproval, notably from the UN Human Rights chief, the United States, and the European Union.

During the course of the inquiry, investigators confiscated two motorcycles, a stolen car that was thought to have been utilised by the suspects, a rifle, a machine gun, four handguns, three grenades, two rifle magazines, and four boxes of ammunition.

President Guillermo Lasso also requested assistance from the US Federal Bureau of Investigation in response to the incident, and he tweeted earlier that a mission would soon be in the nation.

  • 12-member BoG board contributed to Akufo Addo’s failed govt – Afaglo

12-member BoG board contributed to Akufo Addo’s failed govt – Afaglo

The CEO of Marrer Ghana Limited, Susatgad Boat Building and Fishing Industries, Novihoho Afaglo, has joined the chorus of Ghanaian citizens and the Parliamentary Minority in urging for the prompt departure of the Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG) and his deputy officials.

He contends that the BoG’s entire structure, including the Governor, should be overthrown because it allegedly enabled corruption.

Speaking to the Republic Press, Mr Afaglo said the Governor and his deputies alone could not have achieved this distasteful act but were under the watch of the entire 12-member board.

He said, it will not be out of place if the board members and their chairman are immediately dissolved for allegedly watching and supervising incompetence and corrupt practices.

Mr Afaglo said the 12-member BoG board has also contributed to the failed Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s regime for failing to whip management of the bank along on matters of principles and banking.

“What I’m saying is that if three years ago the BoG has the power to supervise the collapse of some banks in Ghana over what they described as mismanagement, what will Ghanaians now described the Central Bank and its board members?” he quizzed.

The CEO said the BoG’s staggering loss of GHS 60.8 billion, twice of what the country is now seeking from International Monetary Fund is disgraceful and unacceptable.

“One thing the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is promising the good people of Ghana is that once former President John Mahama is sworn into office come 2025, they should have hope that all these criminals will face the law,” Mr Afaglo stated.

He said what is more troubling and disturbing is after bringing the BoG under his knees, the Board, Governor, deputies and entire management now find it expedient to invest GHS 2.8 million on a new head office building without any recourse to the huge financial burden on Ghana.

He called on all meaningful Ghanaians to join the Minority’s call to occupy Bank of Ghana to save it from further financial collapse.

  • This is the man Suzzy Williams’ mother blames for her death

This is the man Suzzy Williams’ mother blames for her death

It has been 18 years since the tragic death of Suzzy Williams, one of Ghana’s most beloved television and film actors.

She starred in films such as Bloody Mary, Calamity, The Comforter, and Mother’s Heart.

But behind the scenes, Suzzy had her own love life drama. According to her mother, Cecilia Williams, Suzzy was deeply in love with her colleague actor Abeiku Acquah, who played Killer in the series, Things We Do For Love.

In a recent interview on No.1 FM, Madam Cecilia revealed some details about Suzzy’s relationship with legendary actor Abeiku Acquah.

She claimed that Abeiku and Suzzy were so in love and did everything together. They would often visit her home, eat together, drink together, and kiss each other. She even said that they would always go to the reservoir at the top of the hill to spend some quality time together.

However, things took a tragic turn when Abeiku allegedly broke Suzzy’s heart. Madam Cecilia did not reveal the reason for their break-up, but she said that Suzzy was devastated and rushed into another relationship with Edwin Eastman, the man who she would later get involved in a fatal accident with. Cecilia blamed Abeiku for driving Suzy into the arms of Edwin.

Madam Cecilia said with emotion in her voice: “That is Suzzy’s real boyfriend. They eat together in the house. They do everything in my home. This is the guy, this is the guy we are talking about.

He is the one that broke her heart and she went and picked Edwin. They eat together, they drink together, they (making kissing sounds) everything together in my home. That is the guy. They always do it at the reservoir. At the top. Abeiku. He was always in my house.”

As she spoke, a video of Abeiku and Suzzy was displayed on screen, showing them smiling and talking to each other.

Suzy died on 8 September 2005, at the age of 23, in a car crash at Labadi in Accra. The accident happened on the La-Nungua highway around 1:30 am.

She was buried on 17 September 2005, at the Osu Cemetery.

Is Madam Cecilia telling the truth? Or is she just trying to cope with her grief by blaming someone else? What do you think of this story? Let us know in the comments below.

  • Suzzy Williams didn’t die by the accident -mother

Suzzy Williams didn’t die by the accident -mother

Taking a surprising turn in the unfortunate passing of Ghanaian actress Suzzy Lebene Williams, her mother, Mrs. Cecelia Williams, has once more stepped forward with astonishing claims. She contends that her cherished daughter’s untimely demise wasn’t the result of an accident, but rather a deliberate scheme masterminded by her former boyfriend, Edwin Eastman.

It will be recalled that the popular actress lost her life 18 years ago after a car crash on the La-Teshie Nungua Highway in Accra. The actress was reported to have died out of the accident, however, her mother,  believes her daughter was murdered.

According to her, events prior to and after the death of her daughter gives her a firm indication that Suzzy did not die through the accident as it was reported by the media and believed by everyone.

In a candid interview on No1 Fm, Suzzy’s mum claimed that she possesses evidence suggesting foul play in her daughter’s death. She firmly believes Edwin Eastman had ulterior motives and was involved in a sinister plot that led to the fatal accident. Cecelia revealed that she suspected Edwin to be an evil man the first time she saw him, describing him as a ‘grave looter’.

According to her, she warned Suzzy the day she came home with the guy for her birth certificate because her daughter had suffered a previously broken heart and so, therefore, didn’t want her to end up in the same situation. Unfortunately, her daughter did not heed her advice and drove out with the guy, and that was the end.

She explained by saying, ”They came to the house that morning, and Suzzy said she needed her birth certificate, and I asked her who the guy was. She told me it was her new boyfriend and I told her I don’t like the guy. I pulled her to the room and advised her against the guy but she wouldn’t listen. I told her the guy would kill her, but she accused me of being superstitious because her dad used to say that. I told her not to drive but she told me nothing will happen to her.  I dozed off and I saw the scene of an accident. I woke up and called my husband and told him there was going to be an accident but he brushed it off.”

She continued; ”Yes, Suzzy didn’t die by accident, Suzzy was killed, it was a framed-up thing. It was a calculated thing, because, after her death, someone came to warn me that I should be very careful or else I would lose my life as my daughter did. Even though Suzzy owned the car, she wasn’t the one driving, it was Edwin. And truly, after he was arrested, he confessed that he was the one who was driving but was afraid to say it initially.”

  • 5 reasons why you still can’t get over your ex

5 reasons why you still can’t get over your ex

It was Alexander Graham Bell who once said, “When one door closes, another opens; but we often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door that we do not see the one which has opened for us.”

Who knew the inventor of the telephone was so good at giving advice that can be applied to your dating life?

Now, breaking up is never really easy to do. But for some, the process of getting over a failed relationship can linger a little longer than for others, which sometimes begs the loaded question: why can it be so difficult to get over an ex?

It’s a question that leaves many reeling from a breakup befuddled as they try to move on.

Even science has attempted to solve the mystery.

Last year, Stanford University researchers found people tend to “carry a heavier burden from rejection” when they feel that who they are as a person has been revealed or exposed.

“Few things in life are more traumatic than being rejected by someone who knows you well and then, with this insight, decide that she or he no longer cares for you or wants to be with you,” Carol Dweck, professor of psychology at Stanford, said in a statement. “The experience of being left by someone who thought that they loved you, then learned more and changed their mind, can be a particularly potent threat to the self and can drive people to question who they truly are.”

Sometimes, though, the reasons why someone can’t get over an ex-partner can be a little more complicated.

“It’s hard to accept when someone doesn’t want you anymore,” relationship expert Shannon Tebb of Shanny in the City says. “It’s like an attack on your personal ego and you feel like you’ve failed at something, and it’s really hard to accept when something doesn’t work out.”

According to Tebb, there could be several factors preventing you from moving on from your ex. And once you become aware of what may be stopping you, then you may be able to finally take the steps you need to in order to bounce back from your emotional limbo.

    1. You can’t face the fact that it’s over

“A lot of singles can’t completely come to terms that it’s over,” Tebb says. “So you’re maybe holding to the idea that you can still fix it. You don’t want to let go because you’re focusing on the positive times [in the relationship] and you’re not really focused on where you went wrong and why the relationship ended.”

Tebb says that sometimes people can’t accept that a relationship’s over because they didn’t see the end coming.

“They may not have noticed the signs that it was starting to fail,” she says. “So you refuse to start over because you’ve invested so much time into this relationship that you just can’t get over them.”

    2. You’re keeping tabs on them

Social media has made it easier for people to keep track of those they know. This can be a problem.

“You’re still kind of creeping them out on social media, and maybe you share common friends,” Tebb explains. “You haven’t removed them from your Facebook, and you haven’t removed the old photos of you as a couple. You can’t get over your ex because you haven’t removed them fully from your life.”

Also, avoid looking up your ex. Practicing this restraint is the healthy thing to do – otherwise, it can come back to bite you when you see your ex has moved on in the form of another relationship or even marriage.

“If you’ve had an amicable breakup and you see your ex is engaged, then you can congratulate him or her and make it a positive thing,” Tebb says. “But if you’re not talking to each other and it wasn’t a good split, then feelings of jealousy will arise. You’ll get mixed emotions, which is common and normal. So if you’re feeling upset and vulnerable, you need to talk to someone who can listen to you vent. But if you are seeing stuff on social media, get off of it.”

    3. You haven’t had closure

“Maybe your boyfriend ghosted you or just all of a sudden told you it’s over and hadn’t given you an explanation,” Tebb says. “So you haven’t had that closure that you needed in order to move forward.”

Whether it be with relationships, a job, or a stage in life, getting closure for any significant moment in one’s life is important, psychiatrist Abigail Brenner says.

“Closure means finality; letting go of what once was,” she wrote in Psychology Today. “Finding closure implies a complete acceptance of what has happened and an honouring of the transition away from what’s finished to something new.”

To do this, Brenner says one must grieve the loss, take responsibility for their actions, focus on the positives and make a plan for the immediate future. This, she says, will force you to make things happen and move on.

    4. Low self-esteem

“It’s that fear that you’re never going to find anybody again and it’s a major fear,” Tebb says. “And it’s scary getting back out there, especially if you’ve been in a long-term relationship.”

And because people are comfortable with the familiar, it makes it all that much harder to let go.

“You believe that you’re never going to get that again,” Tebb says. “So you’d rather fix it and work on it when really you can’t change someone else’s mind. Once they tap out, it’s pretty much done.”

    5. The relationship was all about the other person

Sometimes people will give up their lives for a relationship – and whether it’s by choice or not, the relationship becomes very one-sided.

So when a breakup happens, a feeling of abandonment might creep in.

“You were so enthralled with them that it’s scary to go back to your own life by yourself,” Tebb says. “It’s an adjustment – and it’s hard to adjust from something you were comfortable with. You were in your comfort zone with your partner, so the minute you’re out of that you become fearful, sad and angry.”

    How to bounce back

There are a few things people can do to help them get over an ex. The first, Tebb says, is to avoid situations where you’re most likely to run into your former partner.

“If you know they always hang out at a certain bar, don’t go there,” she says. “Just try to separate yourself from places where you might bump into them.”

Tebb also advises to remove the ex-partner from social media and doing a cleanse from the home. This means getting rid of anything they left behind.

And when you feel ready, begin dating again.

This was after two of the leading contenders in the race, Dr Fred Awaah and Dr. Sadat Mohammed failed to attain the required 50+1% of all valid votes cast.

During Wednesday, August 9, 2023, the UTAG UPSA conducted elections to choose new leaders; however, the unresolved presidential election has left voters perplexed about the identity of their upcoming president, according to a report.

According to a statement made available, the two candidates polled 148 and 149 votes, representing 49.50% and 49.83% respectively, indicating no clear majority.

The statement also outlined the total results of the elections as follows:

Total number of votes cast was 299
Total rejected vote counted was 1
Expected valid votes cast was supposed to be 298
Actual valid vote counted was 297
    Uncounted (missing) vote was 1
    Dr Fred Awaah had 148
    Dr Sadat Mohammed had 149

The statement further stated that while the above were the results, one of the contending parties requested for a recount that was not granted.

“The Awaah Team requested for recount of ballot to authenticate the counted votes as a result of the missing vote. This would have established if the uncounted vote is Awaah’s or Sadat’s.

“The EC also proposed a recount of the ballot but Dr Sadat’s team refused and prevented the recount,” it stated.

In the meantime, the only positions that have been declared by the EC after the Wednesday polls are those for vice-president, secretary and treasurer.

The determination on who becomes the next UTAG UPSA president has been referred to the national UTAG for redress.

    UTAG UPSA ELECTS TWO PRESIDENTS

On Wednesday 9th August 2023, The University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) held elections for new executives of the University Teachers Association of Ghana. The election ended in a manner that left voters confused on who their actual president is. The rules of engagement as provided by the independent Electoral Commission for the candidates before the election indicated that for a candidate to win, the candidate must obtain 50% + 1 of valid votes cast (Not simple majority).

At the end of the election, the results for the presidential were as follows:
    1. Total number of votes cast was 299
    2. Total rejected vote counted was 1
    3. Expected valid votes cast was supposed to be 298
    4. Actual valid vote counted was 297
    5. Uncounted (missing) vote was 1
    6. Dr Fred Awaah had 148
    7. Dr Sadat Mohammed had 149

The Awaah Team requested for recount of ballot to authenticate the counted votes as a result of the missing vote. This would have established if the uncounted vote is Awaah’s or Sadat’s.

The EC also proposed a recount of the ballot but Dr Sadat’s team refused and prevented the recount (find the EC letter to National Executive Committee complaining that he was not allowed to recount. A video evidence is also available.

Dr. Fred Doe has been the EC chair for the past two elections. The precedence in all these elections over the years is for a candidate to win with 50%+1 vote. This was reiterated by the EC before the election.

At the close of polls, the EC declared only three position (Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer) based on the 50% + 1 rule (video evidence available)

In the case of the President, an agreement could not be reached for two reasons: the case of the missing ballot and the 50% rule. The EC notified members that the issues would be presented to the National UTAG for determination and clarification (Letter Attached).

Although, using the rule of 50%+1, none of the candidates met the threshold as in these three possible scenarios:

    1. 299 total valid votes cast
    Sadat =149/299X100 = 49.83%
    Awaah = 148/299X100=49.50%
    2. Total valid votes cast 298
    Sadat =149/298X100= 50.00%
    Awaah=148/298X100=49.66%
    3. Total valid votes cast 297
    Sadat 149/297X100=50.17%
    Awaah 148/297X100=49.83%

As would be noted in all of the three possible scenarios, none of the candidates met the 50%+1 vote requirement (50.50%), not even the third scenario where Dr. Sadat had 50.17%.

The key concern is the missing vote which the EC could not account for and Sadat’s team did not allow the EC to recount as requested by Team Awaah. That single missing ballot would have established or otherwise if any of the candidates would have emerge as the winner either by simple majority or 50% + 1 rule.

If the EC decides to align with national position of simple majority, that single missing ballot (not accounted for by the EC) would have determine whether there was a winner or they equaled (Draw).

Our investigation however revealed that the Electoral Commissioner on Thursday, 10th August, 2023 at 11:03pm posted an unsigned letter on social media (Whatsapp) that Dr Sadat Mohammed was elected the president without recourse to 1. Accounting for the missing Vote, 2 the 50%+ 1 rule (which both candidates did not meet) and 3. Simple majority rule which can only be determined by the missing vote.

As a result, both candidates have since held themselves as Presidents-Elect of the Union. Our investigation reveals that UPSA campus is tense and supporters of both presidents are standing resolute with their candidates.

Abducted U.N. workers released after 18 months in Yemen

The United Nations said Friday that five staff members who were kidnapped in Yemen 18 months ago have been released.

In a brief statement, Farhan Haq, the deputy spokesman for U.N. Secretary General Antonio Guterres, said all “available information suggests that all five colleagues are in good health.”

Haq named the freed men as Akm Sufiul Anam, Mazen Bawazir, Bakeel al-Mahdi, Mohammed al-Mulaiki and Khaled Mokhtar Sheikh. All worked for the U.N. Department of Security and Safety, he said

“The secretary-general reiterates that kidnapping is an inhumane and unjustifiable crime, and calls for the perpetrators to be held accountable,” Haq said. The identity of the kidnappers was not revealed, and no details were provided about what led to the captives’ release.

In February 2022, suspected al-Qaida militants abducted five U.N. workers in southern Yemen’s Abyan province, Yemeni officials told the Associated Press at the time.

Al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula, or AQAP, has been active in southern Yemen for years. It is considered one of the global network’s most dangerous branches and has attempted to carry out attacks on the U.S. mainland.

Kidnappings are frequent in Yemen, an impoverished nation where armed tribesmen and militants take hostages to swap for prisoners or cash.

Yemen has been ravaged by war since 2014, when Iran-backed Houthi rebels seized the country’s capital, and much of the north, and forced the government into exile.

A Saudi-led coalition that included the United Arab Emirates intervened the following year to try to restore Yemen’s internationally recognized government to power.

Al-Qaida has since exploited the conflict to cement its presence in the country.

Mayor releases death toll warning as searches within demolished buildings start

The current death toll “could go up” today, according to Maui County Mayor Richard Bissen, when investigators begin searching the destroyed buildings.

talking to the Today Show on NBC

Bissen stated this morning that the 55 total fatalities to date were based on those who had been discovered outside.

He claimed that several of the destroyed residences and businesses were about to be entered by authorities.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), which was given permission by President Biden yesterday, was expected to assist Maui authorities.

According to Bissen, FEMA has the tools necessary to properly inspect the destroyed structures under “hazmat conditions.”

He broke up with me but now wants me back

My boyfriend and I have been dating for the past two years. Although we are in the same year at university, we go to different universities and only communicate through calls and messages.

The problem is, for the last three months, he has not answered my calls or replied my messages. When I asked why, he said he is not ready for a serious relationship and wants us to be friends. Now he has turned around saying he still wants me in his life and I should wait for him to commit.

The question is, is he just wasting my time?

Dating while at the University can be stressful at times. Although it can be fun, it can also have ups and downs. Some relationships at this level can be stable and somewhat healthy and others might end up in future marriages.

It is also assumed that at this level, many students are inexperienced and, therefore, can make many mistakes unless they are intentional about learning from those much older and in stable relationships, attend relationship coaching or even read from other sources.

You mentioned that your boyfriend had not answered your calls for three months but at the same time, he is back and asking you to wait as he commits. This in itself is a message.

Each of you contributes 50 percent in a healthy relationship and every time one is doing 80 percent and the other much less, it is usually a red flag that something is not right. It is during dating that people have more to say to one another.

If your boyfriend tends not to return calls and you keep calling them, they might not value the time and sacrifice you put into the relationship. Make use of this period to focus on your improvement either academically, spiritually, or even socially.

Loving and knowing yourself is an important part of being in a happy relationship. This enables you to grow your worth and protects you from being vulnerable to risky behaviour.

Taking good care of yourself will ignite self-love and later, you will be able to notice how much time you are investing in this relationship.

Take time to find other pleasurable things you can do during this period as opposed to just waiting for your boyfriend to make up his mind.

Waiting will only fuel anxiety within you and even cause other unwanted behaviours. Giving your boyfriend time as you engage totally in different active activities, especially academics, is the best way to go.

Evaluate the relationship in terms of what you have learnt; was it a happy relationship or one full of arguments and fights? As much as all relationships face conflict, it is also important to be able to maintain a healthy relationship for a reasonable time.

As a plug-in hybrid built on the Multivan platform, the California nameplate is apparently going to continue to exist.

Volkswagen’s all-electric ID. Buzz minibus has been a triumph for the European automaker, helping VW surpass Tesla in the EV sales race in Germany in the first seven months of the year.

As demonstrated by conversion experts like Alpin Camper, which unveiled a prototype mobile home in January, the zero-emissions people hauler—which draws design cues from the iconic VW Type 2 van—is also a strong contender for a camper.

As a result, it seems logical that Volkswagen is considering adding the California label to the ID. Buzz model, but it appears that the electric version of the upscale pop-up camper has been delayed due to weight issues, according to a recent story from Edison Media that quotes company officials.

Currently, the VW California is based on the ICE-powered Multivan and, depending on the configuration, has an unladen weight that ranges from 5,070 pounds (2,300 kilogrammes) to 5,732 pounds (2,600 kilogrammes). This indicates that it falls under the European B driving licence category, which caps the maximum weight of a vehicle to 7,716 lbs (3,500 kg) when four passengers and some luggage are present.

As a result, the next California Concept camper, which will be put on display at the Caravan Salon event in Dusseldorf, Germany at the end of this month, will be based on a plug-in hybrid long-wheelbase Multivan, with the series production version set to roll off the assembly line next year.

In June, the Volkswagen ID. Buzz made its debut in the US as a long-wheelbase vehicle with two battery options: an 82-kWh battery pack and a 91-kWh battery pack. The third quarter of 2024 will see the start of deliveries for the all-electric microbus.

Gaagbini Chief loses entire house to flooding; calls for support

Chief of Gaagbini in the North East Region’s West Mamprusi Municipality, Naa Yidana Alhassan, is seeking assistance from the government, non-governmental organizations, individuals, and charitable groups to provide him with construction materials for the rebuilding of his residence, which was inundated and subsequently collapsed due to flooding.

The chief’s plea follows the aftermath of heavy rainfall in the region, resulting in significant damage to numerous residences and bridges within the West Mamprusi and East Mamprusi Municipalities of the North East Region.

The extended rainfall on Wednesday, August 9, 2023, lasting more than 6 hours, led to the displacement of numerous inhabitants across various localities in the region. Affected areas include Gaagbini, Tinkaya, Tinguri, Gbani, Banawa, Takorayiri, and Boayini.

Livestock, farmlands, building materials, containers, and other valuable items belonging to the residents were carried away by the downpour.

Naa Yidana Alhassan said, “I don’t know what to do again. My wife, myself, and my children have all been displaced because all the rooms in my house are gone”.

He is appealing to the government, individuals, and NGOs to support him in one way or the other to reconstruct his house.

“I am appealing to the government, especially, the vice president and all those who matter to support me. I have nothing with me again to build my collapsed house. So, I am appealing to all those who can help me to come and support me,” he appealed.

The Assemblyman for the Nayorku electoral area, Seidu Jafaru is also calling on the government to consider constructing three bridges in Gaagbini to avert the annual occurrence of the flood.

Destruction in Maui: From tropical paradise to battle zone in 24 hours – locals

Les Munn, like so many others here, has a tragic tale of survival. We spoke at one of the shelters on Maui.

His only source of guidance as he fled his Lahaina house through the smoky veil of the wildfires was a police car’s flashing blue light.

He continues, “They were landing on everything and there is just nowhere to go,” as smoke and amber began to fly and the fire simply devoured everything.

“It just went black, and the only thing I could see was the blue lights of the police unit, so that was the beacon I used to get to safety.”

In the evacuation centre, Munn claims he hasn’t run into any of his neighbours.

“That’s kept me tense, kept me stressed these past few days,” he claims.

I am unsure of their survival.

  • NDC’s press conference on BoG’s GHC60bn loss was completely needless – NPP

NDC’s press conference on BoG’s GHC60bn loss was completely needless – NPP

Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has described the press conference held by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to demand the resignation of Bank of Ghana Governor, Dr Ernest Addison, was entirely unnecessary.

Richard Ahiagba conveyed that the administration has recognized Ghana’s economic challenges and is implementing strategies to navigate and emerge from the crisis.

He holds the opinion that rather than issuing a 21-day ultimatum for the Bank of Ghana governor’s resignation, the NDC should have proposed solutions to address the issues at hand.

Speaking on Good Morning Ghana on Metro TV on August 10, 2023, Richard Ahiagba described NDC’s press conference as a waste of time and urged them to stop bastardizing the government for everything it does.

“To call a press conference only to say that he [Dr. Addison] should resign 21 days or occupy, I don’t see the value of that. And I think that they wasted everybody’s time.

“So to call a press conference when there are essential matters to be debated, I am interested in hearing what their position is on how we dig ourselves out of the economy.

“Because really, the media reports that came, they were happy. Now we are not moving forward. This whole enterprise, they start up at their headquarters or wherever they are grouping, to just say that they are going to obstruct everything and bastardize everything government does is not the way to behave as a political party, a responsible opposition party,” he said.

The communications director of the NPP also stated that the government has conceded the challenges of the economy and is working assiduously to recover.

“So this [NDC’s] press conference was completely needless. The subject of this discussion is known to Ghanaians that we are in a difficult place. The government has acknowledged the difficulties we’re going through and is working spirally to try and bring us out of it,” Richard Ahiagba added.

    Background

The Minority in Parliament gave the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Ernest Addison, a 21-day ultimatum to resign.

According to them, the governor and his deputies must resign.

During a press briefing on August 8, 2022, the Minority Leader, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, said the governor had been found culpable of various breaches in the Bank of Ghana Act.

“In this regard, we call for the resignation of the Governor of the Central Bank and his deputies within 21 days from today. We are resolved to embark on popular action to occupy the Central Bank and drive out the team of inept, callous, and criminal mis-managers of the finances of this country and Save the Bank of Ghana,” he said.

Dr Ato Forson noted however that, “the March to Ensure Accountability will begin in 21 days if the Governor of the Bank of Ghana does not do the needful and pack bag and baggage out of that sacred institution that he has so desecrated.”

Wildfires in Hawaii occurred after extreme climate occurrences worldwide

Following other recent extreme weather events throughout the world, there have been wildfires in Hawaii.

Wildfires in Greece had their worst July on record, severely affecting the islands of Corfu and Rhodes.

The wildfire season in Canada has likewise been the worst on record; as of now, more than 25,000 acres (100 sq km) had burned. That comes after devastating wildfires earlier in 2023 in Australia and Chile.

In some areas, such as the western United States, wildfires have burned more land recently.

According to scientists, climate change is bringing about the climatic conditions that make wildfires more likely to spread.

Large fires start every yearly in specific areas of the Hawaiian islands, according to the University of Hawaii, but the size of these fires is exceptional.

Newly-elevated Army general allegedly extorts $8000 from peacekeepers – Report

Questions are arising regarding the recent advancements of high-ranking military officials sanctioned by President Nana Akufo-Addo. Reports indicate that a specific officer has lodged a formal complaint against the Military High Command, urging an inquiry into specific behaviors on their part.

The individual, who held the rank of Brigadier General until recently, allegedly engaged in the practice of coercing funds from soldiers involved in peacekeeping missions.

The person, formerly a Brigadier General, is reported to have been involved in the act of pressuring funds from soldiers participating in peacekeeping assignments.

This paper is informed that, as much as US$8000, were extorted from the soldiers when they returned from the peace mission.

The soldiers, The Herald, learnt got paid US$12,700, but the senior officer extorted his US$8000, leaving them with a paltry US$4,000.

Many of the soldiers, The Herald was informed were not due for Peacekeeping, but were selected and sneaked on the missions by the said senior officer at the cost of US$8000, vaguely labelled as “GOC Admin”.

His conduct has led to some soldiers embarking on these missions several times when others had not been on the missions.

Per Ghana Armed Forces arrangements, soldiers are supposed to be on these missions for a year at US$35 per day. They are to spend two years in Ghana upon return before their next trip; however, The Herald learnt that the officer is able to sneak them onto another trip at US$8000.

Strangely, the petition was said to have been treated with contempt by the military high command and the senior officer, has been promoted and given sensitive responsibility.

The development, has left many of the soldiers very livid with lots of murmuring amongst the soldiers and the officer corps as to the extent of the degeneration in the GAF.

Ukraine orders the evacuation of some northeastern areas

As Russia intensifies its attacks, Ukraine has mandated the evacuation of all inhabitants from 37 communities in the region’s northeast.

The Kupiansk district of the Kharkiv region’s administration claimed they were forced to take action due to “constant Russian shelling” in the region.

According to Ukraine, bombardment in the area on Thursday resulted in the death of a woman.

According to Russia, its troops have made some progress in the region. According to Ukraine, Russian strikes have been repelled.

The two opposing sides’ statements have not been independently verified.

The Kupiansk district administration issued a statement announcing the evacuation of 35 villages and two towns.

The authorities warned, “Don’t disregard your safety and the safety of your loved ones!”

People were being evacuated to “safe regions” of Ukraine, they claimed.

A local of one of the evacuated settlements, Kivsharivka, claimed she was getting ready to leave with her kids but her husband preferred to stay to look after his old mother.

“It’s hard to leave them behind,” 36-year-old Anna Koresh told the AFP news agency. However, she continued, “it’s important to take the kids to a safe place because it’s getting dangerous.”

The Russian defence ministry stated in its most recent briefing that its assault forces moving in the direction of Kupiansk had “improved their position along the front line during offensive operations.”

The military of Ukraine claimed that its troops “successfully repelled” Russian assaults.

However, a Russian shell that struck a house in the village of Podoly, Kupiansk region, on Thursday night resulted in the deaths of a woman and an injury to a man, according to Ukrainian officials.

For residents of Kupiansk, this is not the first order to evacuate.

Since Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, Kupiansk, a crucial regional hub for transportation and supplies, has seen heavy warfare.

In a matter of days, Russian forces took over the city, but a quick counterattack by Ukrainian forces in September restored Ukrainian authority.

These developments, along with the liberation of Kherson in southern Ukraine, represented the biggest shifts on the front lines since Russia withdrew from regions near Kyiv’s capital in April.

Local authorities in Zaporizhzhia city, in southern Ukraine, said that one person was killed in a Russia

Mahama is a spent force – Mustapha Salam

National Youth Organizer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Salam Mustapha, has justified his call on Ghanaians to refrain from voting in favor of Former President John Dramani Mahama

He asserts that Mr Mahama is now “a spent force” in the political landscape, and lacks the capability to fulfill the responsibilities of a president.

Speaking on the track record of he New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), during the Kokrokoo Morning show, he noted that despite a few hitches, the NPP government led by President Akufo-Addo has performed way better than the Mahama administration.

“I have trust and believe that the NPP represents a better alternative any day though we are humans and we may have faulted in one way or the other. We have made errors but on the balance of any scale, our performance outweighs that of the NDC,” he noted.

He further noted that Mr Mahama has declined in significance and no longer holds the same level of influence or capability as it did in the past.

“We have experienced governance under NDC and I’ve said time without number that John Mahama is a spent force in this country. We have seen the best he can give and he has nothing more to offer,” he added.

Murder inquiry launched after 10-year-old girl found dead in ‘devastating’ incident

Following the discovery of a 10-year-old child dead inside a Surrey home, neighbours have spoken of their disbelief.

Following the finding, a murder investigation was opened. On Thursday, just before 3 a.m., police were called to the Hammond Road address due to a worry for their safety.

According to Surrey Police, the girl’s family has been notified and is receiving help from specially trained police.

Everyone in the region is’shocked’ by the tragedy, Amjad Ali, 47, told MailOnline.

The earliest I was aware of anything was around 3.30 this morning, he claimed. As I had taken my wife on vacation and we were still awake, my kid peeked out the window and reported that there were many police officers on the road.

Then, an officer knocked on the door and inquired about the family, but we don’t really know them, the homeowner said.

Everyone is startled, and this is a very wonderful neighbourhood, Mr. Ali continued. Before I saw it on the news, I was unaware that a young girl was involved. I simply cannot believe that this occurred in my neighbourhood.

According to Surrey Police, the girl’s family has been notified and is receiving help from specially trained police.

On Thursday night, there were police officers outside the house and a cordon was in place.

“This is a devastating incident, and our officers are working hard to develop a picture of what happened,” said Detective Chief Inspector Debbie White.

“At this time, we are not looking to name anyone else in connection with our investigation. We have identified a number of people we would like to meet with as part of our enquiries. There is no reason for us to think that the general population is at risk.

The police presence in Hammond Road is substantial and will continue to be so over the next few days. We recognise that the police presence may be unsettling some locals, and we appreciate their cooperation as we carry out our inquiry. As soon as we are able, we will send more updates.

How World Bank, IMF stopped gov’t from re-structuring it $8.8bn loan to Ghana

Finance lecturer and economist, Professor Godfred Bokpin, known for his insightful perspectives, has offered a detailed account of how the World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF) intervened to prevent the Ghanaian government’s proposed $8.8 billion loan restructuring some years back.

Speaking on Peace FM’s morning show, Pro Bopkin recounted that nearly two decades ago, in 2002, the World Bank and IMF intervened to halt the government of Ghana’s efforts to restructure its debt.

“The total external debt of Ghana at the end of 2002 was US$30.5billion. Out of this, the multilateral debt, which refers to the amount Ghana owes the World Bank, IMF and other external institutions, was around US$8.8billion. And do you know what the IMF did? They said they are Lenders of Last Resort and so their debt is not up for restructuring and so the haircut did not affect them. They managed to protect their balance sheet,” he said.

He noted that these levels of losses seriously incapacitate the Central Bank from performing its functions.

  • Court approves the UAE deal to operate Tanzanian ports

Court approves the UAE deal to operate Tanzanian ports

On Thursday, the Tanzanian High Court rejected a request to stop a corporation from the United Arab Emirates from managing Tanzania’s ports.

Four Tanzanians who opposed a 2022 agreement between Tanzania and the UAE filed the petition. According to the agreement, DP World, an Emirati logistics business, will take over administration of a few ports on Tanzania’s mainland.

On June 10, the agreement was accepted by Tanzania’s parliament.

Many activists, residents, and opposition politicians criticised the transaction for what they perceived as the Tanzanian government selling off their nation.

Human Rights Watch (HRW) denounced the Tanzanian government in August for intimidating and imprisoning anyone who opposed the transaction. It happened after the government had detained and arrested 18 people on June 19 in Dar es Salaam for opposing the accord.

Oryem Nyeko, an HRW researcher in Tanzania, stated that the government should respect the right to freedom of expression and assembly and pay attention to critics rather than cracking down on them.

The UAE company has already signed into agreements to develop or manage several African ports, including the Banana port in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Bosaso port in Puntland, the Berbera port in Somaliland, and the Ain Sokhna port in Egypt.

Additionally, the UAE has expressed interest in running the adjoining ports of Mombasa, Lamu, and Kisumu.

Anne Sophie Ave clarifies “diplomatic passport” comment

Anne Sophie Ave, the former French ambassador to Ghana, has addressed the criticism she received for advocating diplomatic passports for certain Ghanaian artists. Her remarks sparked significant debate within the media landscape, leading to a feud between Shatta Wale and entertainment commentator Ola Michael.

During a virtual interview, the former ambassador provided clarity regarding her stance on the issue. She explained that diplomatic passports aren’t exceptionally exclusive, but they could alleviate the challenges artists face when obtaining visas, thus addressing their visa-related frustrations.

‘A diplomatic passport doesn’t really change your life, it makes it slightly easier to acquire a visa, but when I’m at the airport when I travel, I have absolutely no privilege…you would think that there is a special line where it says “diplomatic passport”. But in reality, that specific line is used for people who travel business, are handicapped, people with families, and people on the queue, it’s for everyone.

“If you have a diplomatic passport, it is only worth it when you are on a mission, you cannot use it to go for tourism or vacation. You use it when you’re going on duty, but it doesn’t give you so much privileges’ she stated.

Anne Sophie Ave cited certain criteria that would be needed to qualify for a diplomatic passport including positive visibility, experience, international popularity, and a habit of promoting the country.

In her opinion, French artistes do not get diplomatic passports, as she has never witnessed them promoting France.

‘I get this question lots of times, “do the French artistes have diplomatic passports?” But none of the French artistes ever advocate for France, I have never seen a French musician or a French photographer or a French artist go overseas to present or exhibit its art and say; “Oh I’m French, you should come to France”, I’ve never seen that,’ she argued.

  • Efia Odo trolls Cecilia Daapah

    Efia Odo trolls Cecilia Daapah

Ghanaian artist and social media personality, Efia Odo, has added her perspective to the Cecilia Dapaah controversy.

Earlier in July 2023, Cecilia Abena Dapaah, the former minister for sanitation, found herself in hot water after court records showed that two of her househelps were in court for allegedly stealing up to 1 million dollars in cash, £300,000, and a variety of clothing and jewellery valued at thousands of cedis.

The expose led to investigations into the source of her monies by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) leading to a search of her houses and the discovery of $590,000 and Gh¢2.7 million at her Abelemkpe residence.

Taking to her Twitter (now X) handle, she chastised the sanitation minister for not investing in her looks despite all the money she incurred, adding that her wigs were not of good quality.

“All that money and still couldn’t buy a good wig. Wig stiffer than wood,” Efia Odoposted.

Her post, however, didn’t go down well with many followers, with many saying she was shallow-minded.

  • 7 road trip essentials you’ll need for Accra to London journey

7 road trip essentials you’ll need for Accra to London journey

Unless you’ve been completely out of touch, you’re likely familiar with the extraordinary feat accomplished by a team of nine daring Ghanaians who have etched their names in history by embarking on an incredible road journey from Accra to London. Spanning an impressive 10,000 kilometers, this remarkable expedition has captivated the fascination of numerous individuals.

Inspired by the stories of Ghanaian travellers to different countries, these intrepid explorers set out to drive from one continent to another, creating an incredible travel tale that will be remembered for years to come.

Starting the expedition on Sunday, July 23, 2023, the group embarked on a carefully planned route that took them through scenic towns and cities.

Their journey kicked off in Accra and led them through Aburi, Nsawam, Kumasi, Sunyani, and Dormaa, before crossing into Cote d’Ivoire via Golokrom. What began as a group of twelve people driving five distinct Ghanaian-registered vehicles – including a Mercedez Benz G-Wagon, two Toyota Landcruisers (V8), a Lexus RX 350, and a Ford F150 Raptor – gradually evolved as they encountered different terrains and challenges along the way.

As they navigated their way through various countries and landscapes, the travellers encountered unexpected experiences that tested their resolve.

Despite facing their fair share of obstacles, the team’s determination propelled them forward.

They demonstrated meticulous planning by securing essential documents well ahead of time, including Ghana cards, Schengen visas, UK visas, Laissez Passe for each border, an ECOWAS brown card for the car, and money for unexpected situations.

So, if you’re ever inspired to embark on an epic road trip of your own, here’s a handy list of essentials to ensure a smooth journey:

    1. Clothes

Pack a mix of comfortable clothing suitable for various weather conditions, as you’ll likely encounter diverse climates during your journey.

    1. Food and Personal Grooming Essentials

Having a stash of non-perishable food items like Gari, Shito, groundnut, sardine and personal grooming products can be a lifesaver, especially when you’re in remote areas.

    1. Auto Mechanic Tools

A basic set of auto mechanic tools can be invaluable in case of minor vehicle issues that can be fixed on the spot.

    1. Map and Compass

Despite modern technology, a physical map and compass can come in handy if you venture off the beaten path and lose the GPS signal.

    1. Essential Documents

Ensure you have all necessary identification, visas, and car-related documents to smoothly navigate border crossings and legal requirements.

    1. Currency and Money

Carry local currency for each country you’ll be passing through, along with some extra cash for unexpected situations.

    1. Research and Planning

Thoroughly research your route, potential challenges, and available resources in advance. Engage with fellow road travellers and gather insights from their experiences.

While the journey is bound to be filled with adventure and excitement, it’s important to be prepared for unforeseen circumstances.

Just as Kwabena Ayirebi of Wanderlust Ghana shared, encountering local laws against tinted car windows in Mauritania led to unexpected delays for the team.

As such, flexibility and adaptability are key traits for any road trip enthusiast.

  • Are you building heaven? – Sammy Gyamfi on $250m BoG building

The revelation of a $250 million building project by the Bank of Ghana (BoG) has ignited a fiery response from the general public.

Citizens are expressing a mix of astonishment, concern, and demands for transparency regarding the significant financial commitment.

National Democratic Congress (NDC) National Communications Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, has also added his voice to the discourse, questioning the rationale behind the colossal expenditure of the project.

“US$250 million for one building, in a country like Ghana, in this critical time? Why, are you building a new Heaven?” he asked on UTV’s Mpu ne Mpu show.

The staggering cost associated with the Bank of Ghana’s new building venture has raised eyebrows and sparked a nationwide debate over fiscal prudence and resource allocation. Sammy Gyamfi, known for his vocal stance on political and economic matters, seized the opportunity to express his incredulity over the project’s price tag.

“In these difficult times, when we are supposed to take measures to mitigate the impact of the harsh economic conditions, they are making the construction of a building their priority. Even after recording huge losses the previous year?” a baffled Sammy Gyamfi contended.

“This is the same building the governor under previous administrations since 1957, including Mahama’s administration have,” he added.

  • #AccraToLondon By Road: I will love to do a documentary on them – Wode Maya

#AccraToLondon By Road: I will love to do a documentary on them – Wode Maya

Ghanaian content producer, Wode Maya, has expressed his enthusiasm regarding the road trip taken by his fellow Ghanaians from Accra to London, which he finds quite “remarkable.”

During a conversation on TV3’s Twitter space with Helen Appiah-Ampofo, the YouTuber noted his engagement with the online excitement surrounding the journey. He also conveyed his interest in creating a documentary about the trip if he’s granted access to the footage.

“I’ve really been following and it was interesting to see Ghanaians going on an adventure like that. I was so impressed and I wish I could do a full story on them; on the whole journey if they actually documented it. I can just get the footage and do a proper documentary for them,” he said in excitement.

According to him, Ghanaians are not super adventurous so he is exhilarated seeing some people take up such a cause.

“I’ve been following and I was so excited to see that happen, especially knowing that it’s coming from Ghanaians because I believe that Ghanaians don’t like adventures like this,” he stated

What put the digital media influencer in utter awe was the fact that these Ghanaians “tried climbing Kilimanjaro” which is the tallest mountain in Africa and is located in Tanzania. Apparently, having experienced how tough it is to go on such an expedition, Wode Maya appreciated their efforts a lot.

He indicated that “To see that they even tried climbing Kilimanjaro… I was on top of Kilimanjaro and all I can say is that I won’t do it again. When I got up there, I asked myself, ‘Who sent me?’ It’s beautiful to see Ghanaians come up with such an initiative. I’ve been following and I can’t wait to meet all of them in person when I return to Ghana.”

Switching the conversation a bit, Wode Maya talks about how absurd it is for Africans to struggle when it comes to touring their own continent.

“It’s ridiculous for an African to struggle to travel within Africa. It’s really not easy travelling within Africa; tickets are expensive,” he highlighted.

Explosions shake Kyiv as warning about Putin’s hypersonic missiles issued

Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, was rocked by many explosions, which prompted the government to issue a general air-raid warning.

Residents were instructed to remain in air raid bunkers by Mayor Vitali Klitschko. Ukrainian air defences, according to Kyiv city officials, were in operation.

The air alert is tentatively connected to the movement of probable targets for Russian Kinzhal hypersonic missiles, which were allegedly shot down by Ukrainian air defences.

Around 200 kilometres from Kiev, in the western and central parts of Vinnytsia and Khmelnytskyi, explosions were audible.

“The missile threat is still present! Keep to the shelters! Serhiy Popko, a general from Ukraine, stated on Telegram.

According to Klitschko, missile parts landed on the grounds of one of the city’s paediatric hospitals. “There were no injuries or property damage.”

The warning follows a Russian missile strike that injured 16 people and killed one on Thursday night in the Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia.

‘Zaporizhzhia. Russian shelling does continuous damage to the city. The occupants fired a missile at the structure, which caused a fire to start, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy.

The 16 injured, according to Zaporizhzhia Governor Yuriy Malashko, included four youngsters.

Officially released images and video revealed a sizable crater, crushed vehicles, and a severely damaged four-story building with a hotel sign.

Reikartz Hotel, located in the heart of the city on the bank of the Dnipro River, was identified as the damaged structure by local media.

Denise Brown, the humanitarian coordinator for Ukraine, stated via email that when UN personnel visited the town, they stayed at the hotel.

“I am horrified by the news that a Russian strike in Zaporizhzhia just now hit a hotel frequently used by UN employees and our colleagues from NGOs supporting people affected by the war,” she added. Every every time I have travelled to Zaporizhzhia, I have stayed in this hotel.

It was Zaporizhzhia’s second attack in as many days. A Russian missile attack on Wednesday resulted in the deaths of two young women and a man and nine additional injuries.

  • 23 Syrian soldiers killed in an Islamic State attack on an army transport

23 Syrian soldiers killed in an Islamic State attack on an army transport

In an attack in eastern Syria that IS terrorists are said to have carried out, at least 23 Syrian soldiers are reported to have died.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which is located in the UK, the jihadists surrounded a military bus in eastern Deir al-Zour province before opening fire.

Numerous soldiers are reported to be missing, along with more than ten more soldiers who were hurt.

According to IS extremists, the strike was the bloodiest of this year.

Although it lost the majority of its land in 2019, IS continues to operate out of hiding places in the vast Syrian desert, where it conducts ambushes and hit-and-run operations.

According to a military source published by Sana news agency, a “terrorist” group assaulted a military bus on Thursday in the steppe desert on the road from the T2 pumping station, which is located south of the city of Deir al-Zour and near to the Iraqi border. Several soldiers were killed and injured in the attack.

Before being taken over by the Syrian army in 2017, the T2 pumping station served as an IS bastion.

The death toll is probably going to go substantially, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), a UK-based monitoring organisation that depends on a large network of sources on the ground in Syria.

Raqa province claimed the lives of 10 Syrian military and pro-government fighters.

In recent weeks, IS members have upped their attacks in the north and northeast of Syria.

According to the president of Turkey, Abu Hussein al-Qurayshi, a former suspected leader of the IS group in Syria, was killed by Turkish soldiers in April.

IS previously controlled 88,000 square kilometres (34,000 square miles) of land, extending from northern Iraq to northeastern Syria, where it brutally ruled over about eight million people.

The UN has issued a warning that despite the group’s expulsion from its final area of territory in 2019, it still poses a persistent threat.

  • I don’t regret snatching ballot sheets in Parliament – Carlos Ahenkora

I don’t regret snatching ballot sheets in Parliament – Carlos Ahenkora

Member of Parliament for Tema West, Carlos Ahenkora, has openly expressed his lack of regret for his action of snatching ballot sheets during a significant parliamentary event.

The incident, which took place on January 7, 2021 in Parliament during a vote to elect a new Speaker of Parliament, captured the attention of many due to its unprecedented nature.

Two candidates had been presented for the vote; Alban Bagbin from the Minority Caucus and Professor Aaron Mike Oquaye from the Majority.

Shortly after the votes were counted for NPP‘s candidate Professor Aaron Mike Oquaye, Mr Ahenkora was seen seizing ballot papers from the Clerks before hastily leaving the scene.

Carlos Ahenkora, unreservedly candid about his actions, asserted that he stands by his decision without remorse.

According to him, he feared that an NDC victory, led by Alban Bagbin, contender for the election, would hinder the NPP’s policy formulation in Parliament.

“So, what happened there was my dedication and commitment to NPP and my loyalty. Even though I don’t think I’m going to do it again, I don’t regret doing it.”

During the interview, he noted that his thoughts on the matter have been vindicated by the current state of affairs in Parliament.

He pointed out that the NPP is currently encountering robust opposition from NDC parliamentarians, who he believes are supported by the Speaker of Parliament, a situation he claims was the very scenario he sought to prevent.

“A lot of my colleagues did not understand why I snatched the ballots but today they turn to hail me. A lot of them say if they knew that things were going to be so tough in parliament as we experience today. A whole party, NDC parliamentarians mostly oppose our policies in parliament with the support of the Speaker of Parliament. How is that possible?” oyerepafmonline.com quoted him to have said.

He emphasized the significance of having a Speaker of Parliament from the ruling party, asserting that having a single Speaker aligned with the NPP’s goals is more effective than having numerous parliamentarians.

  • Zuma evades more jail time over congestion

Zuma evades more jail time over congestion

The decision to keep former South African President Jacob Zuma out of prison, according to officials, was made to ease the overcrowding in jails.

Having been sentenced to 15 months in prison for contempt of court, Zuma turned himself in to the police on Friday.

His medical parole discharge has previously been ruled by the courts to be illegal.

Justice Minister Ronald Lamola asserted he had been granted remission in order to address the overcrowding in prisons.

As part of the procedure, which aims to lessen systemic stress, low-risk criminals are freed.

Zuma reported at the Estcourt Correctional Facility in his home province of KwaZulu-Natal on Friday morning and was “admitted” into the system before being released an hour later, according to South Africa’s Commissioner of Prisons Makgothi Thobakgale.

President Cyril Ramaphosa granted the remission status to more than 9,000 low-risk inmates.

According to him, the “remission process” began in April.

More than 350 people died in rioting and protests when Zuma was imprisoned in 2021.

After declining to appear before a tribunal looking into financial fraud and favouritism committed under his president, he was punished.

However, after serving only two months of his sentence, he was released on medical parole.

Last November, an appeals court ruled that Zuma’s release had been improperly granted and sent him back to prison to serve out the remainder of his sentence. A request to reverse this judgement was denied by the constitutional court last month.

  • Africa likely to experience 2 more coups if Niger situation is not properly addressed – WANEP

Africa likely to experience 2 more coups if Niger situation is not properly addressed – WANEP

Executive Director for the West Africa Network for Peacebuilding (WANEP), Chukwuemeka Eze, has raised concerns about the possibility of more military takeovers in Africa if the ongoing situation in Niger is not effectively addressed.

The warning comes as tensions continue to rise in the West African nation.

Mr Eze in an interview on JoyNews, emphasised the urgent need for swift and comprehensive action to prevent the situation from escalating further, stressing that the potential fallout from the situation could have far-reaching implications for the stability of the region.

“We did our analysis and we felt that there could be two more [situations] if nothing is done in Niger and that’s not a trajectory that we want to go again. This is becoming very very very worrisome,” he added.

Niger, a landlocked country in West Africa, has been grappling with political turmoil in recent months. The concerns stem from a combination of factors, including political dissent, economic challenges, and social unrest.

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has intervened in the situation and has ordered ‘immediate activation’ of the standby force in Niger to restore democracy.

Speaking on the development, the security analyst entreated ECOWAS to take decisive action in handling the crisis.

“I think the fundamentals for me is whether there’s an existing protocol that forbids the coup d’etat in West Africa and  whether these countries actually have ascribe to it through their national government,” he said.

“The fact that we did not act in Burkina or Mali the way we should act, also tells me that lessons are being learnt,” he added.

The analyst’s earlier prediction hinges on the notion that if the situation in Niger is not adequately addressed, it could serve as a precedent for similar events in other parts of the African continent. Military takeovers have historically been a concern in various African nations, and the analyst’s warning underscores the need for regional and international stakeholders to engage diplomatically and collaboratively to mitigate the risk.

The stability of African countries is crucial not only for their citizens but also for regional peace and security. The analyst’s warning serves as a call to action for leaders, diplomats, and international organizations to work together to find a peaceful resolution to the crisis in Niger.

  • Israel transports Jews from crisis zones in Ethiopia

Israel transports Jews from crisis zones in Ethiopia

Over 200 Israeli citizens and Ethiopian Jews were relocated to Addis Abeba, the nation’s capital, using a special flight that Israel stated it had dispatched from two cities in the Amhara and Oromia regions affected by recent unrest.

Jewish residents number in the thousands in the Amhara region.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a statement that he had ordered the evacuees to be removed from fighting zones and that they would travel to Israel.

Despite recent violent clashes between the army and local militias, relative quiet is still being reported in the largest cities in the Amhara region.

The army claimed to have recovered control in important areas, but local militias, according to residents of some smaller cities and rural areas, are still in command.

In the meantime, the US and the UK have joined forces with Japan, Australia, and New Zealand to voice their concerns on the deteriorating security in Ethiopia.

Recent violence in the Amhara and Oromia regions of the country “have resulted in civilian deaths and instability,” according to a joint statement made on Friday.

Prior to this, the UN’s Commission of Human Rights Experts on Ethiopia expressed its “deep concern” over the current unrest and urged the government to follow “the principles of necessity, proportionality, and non-discrimination” in enforcing a state of emergency that had been declared in response to the violence.

  • At least 23 dead and 30 missing after boat capsizes

At least 23 dead and 30 missing after boat capsizes

The bodies of 23 Rohingya refugees from Myanmar’s Rakhine state have been discovered after their boat capsized.

According to reports, eight people made it through the catastrophe, but thirty more remain missing.

According to the survivors, they were trying to travel to Malaysia on Sunday when their boat, which was carrying more than 50 passengers, capsized and the crew abandoned it.

Hundreds of Rohingyas travel perilously by sea to Malaysia or Indonesia every year.

They are running away from Bangladeshi refugee camps that are overcrowded and persecution in Myanmar. According to a rescue team that spoke to BBC Burmese, there were 13 women and 10 men, all Muslims from the Rohingya ethnic minority, killed this week.

In Myanmar, which is primarily a Buddhist country, the Muslim Rohingyas constitute an ethnic minority. In 2017, many of them fled to Bangladesh to avoid a genocide campaign carried out by the Burmese military. Since the military coup in 2021, many who are still in Myanmar have been attempting to leave as well.

The boat’s survivors this week recall being hit by a big wave close to Sittwe, the capital of Rakhine.

According to them, the smugglers abandoned the boat after receiving payment of about $4,000 (£3,153) per person for the trip to Malaysia. The victims’ bodies had either washed ashore or been picked up by other boats.

At this time of year, when monsoon storm season is at its height, travelling across the Andaman Sea in crowded fishing boats is particularly risky.

The majority of Rohingyas try to cross between October and May.

They are willing to take the chance because of the unbearably bad circumstances in which they are forced to live, whether as refugees in horrendously crowded camps in Bangladesh or as political prisoners facing discrimination and movement restrictions in Myanmar. They frequently sell their only assets, such as land, to finance the trip.

  • Ethiopia takes action against hotel homosexual sex

Ethiopia takes action against hotel homosexual sex

Authorities in Ethiopia claim to have cracked down on hotels, restaurants, and entertainment venues in the nation’s capital where it is said that homosexual acts are occurring.

Taking action “against institutions where homosexual acts are being carried out,” the Addis Ababa Peace and Security Administration Bureau, a government agency, declared.

The city government claimed that the activities were the result of public tips and that a guest house had already been raided.

It added that it would continue conducting operations in other locations and urged the public to report any such actions to the police.

Although homosexual actions are illegal in Ethiopia, there haven’t been any recent reports of instances or convictions connected to them.

An LGBT advocacy group, House of Guramayle, claimed earlier this week that Ethiopia was experiencing “unprecedented attacks on individuals based on their real or perceived sexual orientation and gender identity”.

It asked social media platforms to deal with hate speech videos encouraging violence and urged human rights organisations to denounce such acts both locally and globally.

I want Majesty becomes a footballer and earn US$200k a week – Michy reveals

Ghanaian artist and TV host, Michy, has openly shared her thoughts on her son’s potential career path, expressing a preference for soccer over music due to perceived shortcomings in the country’s entertainment sector.

Michy’s concern centers around the apparent lack of discipline prevalent within the Ghanaian entertainment industry, a factor she finds disheartening.

In an interview with the Asempa Showbiz Review, Michy opened up about her considerations for her son’s future aspirations.

She candidly voiced her reservations about supporting her son’s entry into the music industry, citing the perceived dearth of discipline as a key factor.

According to her, this concern has led her to wish for her son to become a soccer star instead of a musician.

Michy underscored the financial prospects associated with soccer, noting its potential for substantial monetary gains in comparison to the music industry.

She pointed out that soccer offers a more structured and regimented environment, highlighting the discipline inherent in the sport as a crucial attribute that could contribute to her son’s personal and professional growth.

“No no no, he should go and play ball. $200,000 a week is not small money oo”,

Michy answered when she was asked if she would allow her son to go into music.

Majesty is a remarkable young boy, especially when he interacts with people—it’s truly fascinating. He’s already showing an interest in playing the piano, and we’re in the process of refining his piano skills.

His inclination towards musical instruments and his desire to understand beats and rhythms are apparent. While I do recognize a potential future in music, I’d rather see him pursue soccer due to the strong sense of discipline that accompanies it,“ she expressed.

The media has not been fair to me – Empress Gifty

Ghanaian Gospel musician Empress Gifty has expressed her displeasure with the Ghanaian media, claiming that she has been subjected to unfair misrepresentation for a very long time.

In a recent interview on Hitz FM, the award-winning singer shared her experience and raised concerns about the misrepresentation of her personal life and career in the media.

She cited instances where her words were taken out of context and headlines were sensationalised, creating confusion in the minds of her followers and the public at large.

“l understand their controversies and how they work, they can just change everything that you said, but as for me, I don’t care, because I know I am doing the right thing and that’s it, I make sure that on my page, I tell my people the truth about the whole issue. As for the media, I play along with whatever they’re doing,” she said

The singer went on to emphasise the importance of responsible journalism and the need for accurate representation in the media.

She expressed her desire to continue spreading positivity and encouragement through her songs, while also urging the media to play a role in supporting artistes who contribute positively to society.

“It’s about time the bloggers, the presenters, the consumers need to know that, maybe the caption is there but go check the interview, go listen to what Empress said, if you don’t believe it, come to my page, and see what I said, and then you can give your conclusion.

“If the bloggers and the presenters can also switch a little bit, it can also help them because I don’t think I’m the only one with concerns about this issue,” she added.

  • Chinese real estate company Country Garden issues $7.6 billion loss warning

Chinese real estate company Country Garden issues $7.6 billion loss warning

One of China‘s largest real estate developers, Country Garden, has issued a warning that its first-half losses could reach $7.6 billion (£6 billion).

The announcement is the most recent indication of the serious problems the second-largest economy in the world is having.

China plunged into deflation for the first time in more than two years, according to official data released this week.

Along with a steep decline in exports, youth unemployment has reached an all-time high.

On Friday afternoon, Country Garden Holdings‘ stock fell more than 5% in Hong Kong exchange.

In a statement to the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, Country Garden stated that it “expects to record a net loss ranging from approximately RMB45 billion [$6.24 billion; £4.9 billion] to RMB55 billion for the six months ended 30 June 2023.”

The anticipated deficit contrasts with a $265 million profit at this time last year.

The company added that it has formed a special task group under the leadership of Yang Huiyan, its chairman, to look for measures to revive the company.

The company’s rating was reduced earlier on Thursday by rating agency Moody’s, which highlighted “heightened liquidity and refinancing risks” as its justification.

It happened at a time when China was struggling economically, which has led some to wonder how quickly the country is recovering from the pandemic.

In line with expectations, the nation’s exports declined by a larger-than-expected 14.5% in July compared to the same month last year, while imports decreased by 12.4%.

As a record 11.58 million university graduates are anticipated to enter the job market this year, youth unemployment, which is at an all-time high, is also being keenly studied.

President of the United States Joe Biden stated on Thursday that China’s economic woes are a “ticking time bomb.”

Mr. Biden also stated that “China is in trouble” while highlighting its high unemployment and ageing workforce at a fundraising event in the western state of Utah.

The nation is also addressing issues with the housing market and the soaring local government debt.

Evergrande, formerly China’s largest real estate company, disclosed this month that it lost a combined $81.1 billion in 2021 and 2022.

It happened at the same time that the company, which went into debt default in late 2021, announced to investors its overdue earnings.

Evergrande has been battling debts worth an estimated $300 billion.

The significant losses show how severely the developer was impacted by the Chinese real estate crisis in recent years.

Given that the property sector makes up around a third of China’s GDP and encompasses everything from home construction to the manufacturing of white goods used in them, issues there might have a significant influence on the nation.

UPSA to construct a police station

The University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), has commenced efforts towards establishing a police station to serve the needs of the university community.

The creation of the single-story prototype police station marks a significant stride in fostering a more secure environment for students, faculty, staff, and neighboring communities.

The project is expected to be completed within nine months.

The project’s launch, according to UPSA Vice-Chancellor Prof. Abednego F. O. Amartey, marked a significant moment in the university’s history and demonstrated their commitment to providing a safe and prosperous environment for community members.

“With the ever-increasing number of students and expanding community around the university, the need for enhanced security measures has become evident,” Prof. Amartey said.

The Director-General, Services, of the Ghana Police Service, Commissioner of Police (COP) Enoch Adutwum Bediako, who handed the land documents to the university management, said the construction of the station signified the university’s determination to address safety concerns in the community.

“This police station will enable us to better serve the needs of the university and its community by enhancing police visibility to deter criminal activities,” he added.

The Chairman of the UPSA Governing Council, Dr Kofi Ohene-Konadu, expressed appreciation for the project, saying “the safety and well-being of our students, faculty, and neighbouring communities are of utmost importance to us”

He thanked the police administration, the Lands Commission, and the President of the UPSA Global Alumni Association, Francis Dadzie, for their respective roles in securing the parcel of land for the project.

Dr Ohene-Konadu, however, urged the alumni and the general public to contribute towards the construction of the project.

US supports peaceful termination of Niger coup

The US says it respects Ecowas‘ resolve to investigate all possibilities for a peaceful settlement to the crisis in Niger after the body authorised a “standby” military deployment.

After President Mohamed Bazoum was overthrown by a military coup on July 26, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced he was joining the Ecowas leadership in their appeal for constitutional order in Niger.

He said that the US would hold the Niger junta responsible for ensuring the safety of Mr. Bazoum, his family, and the jailed officials from his government.

The former president has been under house arrest for more than two weeks, and the US and UN have expressed worry for his health and safety.

A Sunday deadline for the junta to reinstall Mr. Bazoum or face military intervention was disregarded.

Instead, a new cabinet led by military officials has been appointed to govern the nation.
