  • US soldier who entered North Korea was previously assaulted and imprisoned

A US soldier entered North Korea on Tuesday, according to new information, but the communist nation hasn’t commented on the incident, so it’s unclear exactly where he is now.

According to court records, Private Travis King, who is thought to be the first American service member to enter North Korea since 1982, had a history of assault, was being disciplined for his behaviour, and was scheduled to return to the US the day before the incident. The soldier was going to be administratively separated from the US Army, an army official told CNN.

King’s precise route to the North Korean side of the border is still unknown.

King had been on a tour of a border area as a civilian when he crossed the demarcation line.

His motive is also a mystery. King’s mother, Claudine Gates, told ABC she was “shocked” after being told by the US Army that her son had crossed into North Korea.

“I can’t see Travis doing anything like that,” Gates told ABC, adding that she heard from her son several days ago and he told her that he’d be returning to his base in Fort Bliss.

The US has been actively reaching out to North Korea to resolve the situation, but it has not yet heard back, a defense official said Wednesday. It is typical of North Korea not to respond to US outreach, the defense official added.

Adm. John Aquilino, who is in charge of US Indo-Pacific Command, said Tuesday that the US has had “no contact at this point” with North Korea in regards to King. Speaking at the Aspen Security Forum on Tuesday, Aquilino said King “made a run across the demilitarized zone in the Joint Security Area, was picked up by the North Koreans, and we’ve had no contact at this point.”

Aquilino added that he has “gotten no reports” that King was a North Korea sympathizer.

The US Army has identified King as a cavalry scout who joined the military in January 2021. US officials did not say how long King had been in South Korea, but at some point he faced disciplinary action for assault and spent about 50 days in a detention facility.

King was held in a designated detention facility under the Status of Forces Agreement with South Korea, the officials said, which is an agreement that defines how US service members, their family members, and other Defense Department personnel are treated and processed in a foreign country, including its justice system

A US official told CNN that King was released from detention on July 10 and was set to fly back to the US on Monday.

Another official told CNN King was escorted to the airport by military officials, but the escorts were unable to accompany him to the gate and he ultimately did not board his flight.

King appears to have a history of violent behavior. South Korean court documents show that he was accused of assault twice last year, and received a fine for one of the incidents.

Last October, he was accused of pushing and repeatedly punching a victim in the face in a club in Mapo-gu, Seoul, after being refused a drink he asked for, according to the Seoul Western District Court documents.

Following the alleged assault, King was taken into police custody and placed in the back seat of a patrol car, when he allegedly used offensive language against Korea, the Korean army and the Korean police while in anger, the court document said.

He then allegedly kicked the door of the patrol car several times, causing 583,959 Korean won (around $461) of damage, according to the court document. King was fined 5 million Korean won (around $4,000) as a result, the document stated.

“If the defendant does not pay the above fine, the defendant shall be detained in a labor facility for a period of time converted to 100,000 Korean won per day,” the document said. It is unclear at this point if King paid the fine or served time at a labor facility.

The court document also referenced an earlier assault case against King from September 2022, which was dropped after the alleged victim expressed his intention not to press charges against King. South Korean police told CNN that King was transferred to US military police after an investigation into an assault last September. It is unclear whether the incident they were referring to was the same case that was dismissed by the court.

It is unclear whether the time he spent in detention was related to these incidents.

  • Two killed by gunman in Auckland hours before the opening ceremony of Women’s World Cup

Two killed by gunman in Auckland hours before the opening ceremony of Women’s World Cup

Just hours before the Women’s World Cup kicked off, a rare multiple shooting in the heart of Auckland shook the city as tens of thousands gathered to watch New Zealand play Norway in the tournament’s first match.

In a hastily convened news conference, New Zealand Prime Minister Chris Hipkins provided details of the attack and confirmed that three people, including the gunman, had died and a number of others had been hurt.

After hearing reports that a man brandishing a pump action shotgun had started firing on a work site shortly after 7 a.m. local time on Thursday, emergency personnel sped to the city’s central business district, the man claimed.

“He moved through the building site discharging the firearm as he went,” Hipkins said. “Upon reaching the upper levels of the building, the man contained himself in an elevator. Shots were fired, and he was located a short time later.”

News footage showed heavily armed police dressed in body armour and carrying rifles flocking to the scene and cordoning off swathes of the business district.

Hipkins said the actions of the police officers who “ran into the gunfire, straight into harm’s way in order to save the lives of others” were “nothing short of heroic.”

New Zealand Police Commissioner Andrew Coster said one officer was shot as he attempted to engage the gunman, and four civilians had “moderate to critical injuries.”

Coster said the suspect was under home detention orders but had an exemption to work at the construction site where the shooting took place, and the incident was believed to be related to his work there.

The man had a “family violence history” but there was “nothing to suggest that he has presented a high level risk,” Coster said. He did not have a firearms license, Coster added.

New Zealand Police said the shooting did not pose a national security risk, as officials confirmed the Women’s World Cup opening ceremony and first game would go ahead as planned.

In a statement, FIFA said it extended “its deepest condolences to the families and friends of the victims”.

“FIFA has been informed that this was an isolated incident that was not related to football operations and the opening match tonight at Eden Park will proceed as planned,” the statement added.

However plans to show the match on a big screen at a fanzone in downtown Auckland were scrapped “out of deep respect to those who lost their lives,” the mayor’s office and Auckland Council said in a statement. The fan festival will open from midday Friday, the statement added.

Tourism New Zealand also canceled a welcome event scheduled for the opening match because the location is within the area cordoned off by police as they investigate the shooting.

The central business district in Auckland is the commercial heart of the city, a base for blue chip international firms and the gateway to the famous harborside, which is lined with restaurants and bars and home to the main ferry terminal.

Shootings are relatively rare in New Zealand, especially following the introduction of strict gun laws in 2019 after a mass shooting in Christchurch left 50 people dead and led to strict new laws curbing firearms being passed in a matter of days.

Auckland Mayor Wayne Brown told New Zealand public radio RNZ the shooting was a “dreadful thing to happen in our city at a time when the rest of the world’s watching us over the football.”

New Zealand will face Norway at Eden Park in the opening match on Thursday in one of the world’s biggest sporting events, co-hosted by New Zealand and neighbor Australia.

Players from the United States women’s national soccer team (USWNT) also addressed the shooting at their inaugural press conference.

“Unfortunately in the US I feel like we’ve dealt with this far too many times,” forward Lynn Williams told reporters.

Looking over the cordon, Nisha, an American tourist who had traveled to Auckland to watch the World Cup, described the shooting to CNN as “incredibly tragic… especially at the start of the World Cup, there’s so many people coming in, there’s so much excitement.”

Nisha, who declined having her surname published, said news of the shooting surprised her.

“In places like New Zealand, you just assume a level of sort of safety, right?” she said.

Standing at the edge of the cordon on Quay Street a block away from the ferry pier, 21 year-old Seth Kruger, who is originally from South Africa, expressed shock at the shooting.

“I reckon it’s a pretty rare occurrence for New Zealand, he said. “Moving here, you move here for safety reasons. So pretty weird for this to be happening just down the road from home as well.”

Kruger and his friend David Aguillon were scheduled to work at The Cloud, a multipurpose event space at the Queen’s Wharf along the Auckland waterfront, which is hosting the FIFA Fan Festival throughout the World Cup.

However, with the police continuing to cordon off several key streets, Aguillon said they hadn’t been able to get on site, and it was unclear whether the Fan Festival would be open in time for Monday’s first game.

In a statement, US Soccer said that it “extends its deepest condolences to the families of the victims who were killed in downtown Auckland today.”

In a statement, New Zealand Football said it was “shocked” by the incident. “We can confirm that all of the Football Ferns team and staff are safe but we will not be able to comment further while details are still emerging,” a statement said. “Preparations for the game tonight at Eden Park will continue as planned.”

  • Xi praises Kissinger at a meeting that recalls a time of closer ties

Xi praises Kissinger at a meeting that recalls a time of closer ties

During a meeting with the 100-year-old former US Secretary of State, who is in Beijing this week on a surprise visit, Chinese leader Xi Jinping praised Kissinger as a “old friend”

According to official broadcaster CCTV, Xi and Kissinger met at the Diaoyutai official Guesthouse, a diplomatic building in western Beijing where Kissinger was welcomed during his first trip to China in 1971.

Xi mentioned in the meeting that Kissinger had since made over 100 trips to China.

The Chinese leader praised Kissinger’s role in normalizing relations between the US and China half a century ago, when the two countries were at a “critical turning point.”

In July 1971, Kissinger became the first high-ranking US official to visit Communist China. His secret meetings with Chinese leaders paved the way for then US President Richard Nixon’s “ice-breaking” trip the following year.

In the decades that followed, US-China ties blossomed alongside their economic interdependence. But in more recent years the relationship between the world’s two largest economies has deteriorated markedly.

For Xi, Kissinger’s presence was a reminder of less rocky times.

“We never forget our old friends, and will never forget your historic contribution to the development of China-US relations and the enhancement of friendship between the two peoples,” Xi told Kissinger.

Kissinger replied that it is a “great honor” to visit China, according to CCTV.

“I am very grateful to the Chinese side for arranging this meeting in Building 5 of the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse. This is also the place where I met Chinese leaders for the first time,” Kissinger was quoted as saying.

“The relationship between our two countries is related to world peace and the progress of human society.”

The meeting comes after Kissinger met with China’s top diplomat Wang Yi and Defense Minister Li Shangfu, who has been under US sanction since 2018 over China’s purchase of Russian weapons.

The fact that Kissinger was granted an audience with Xi is indicative of how highly he is regarded by China’s leadership.

His previously unannounced trip overlapped with Kerry’s high-profile visit to Beijing, which saw US and China resume climate talks that had been frozen for nearly a year.

Noticeably, Kerry, who is also a former US Secretary of State, was not granted a meeting with Xi, despite being a serving member of President Joe Biden’s current administration and anticipation by some observers beforehand that such a face to face could be on the cards.

The visit by Kissinger, who said he was in Beijing “as a friend of China,” followed a series of trips by US cabinet officials in recent weeks, including US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen.

Blinken was the only US official who secured a meeting with Xi.

US officials have stressed that Kissinger is acting in his capacity as a private citizen and not as an messenger for the Biden administration.

Xi’s meeting with Kissinger is another sign that for China, unofficial people-to-people relations are becoming more important than official ones in its interactions with the US, said Suisheng Zhao, director of the Center for China-US Cooperation at the University of Denver.

Zhao described the trend as “a return to the pre-Nixon years,” before the two countries established diplomatic ties.

Last month, Xi met with American entrepreneur and philanthropist Bill Gates in his first known one-on-one meeting with a Western business figure in years.

Xi called Gates an “old friend” and stressed that he was “the first American friend I’ve seen this year.”

Alfred Wu, an associate professor at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy at the National University of Singapore, said Xi’s meetings are chosen purposefully to send a signal to the outside world.

“The message is very clear: Xi Jinping wants to meet with the pro-China people, who are willing to speak out for China,” he said. “It is a divide-and-conquer strategy.”

Wu noted that Xi also held a surprise meeting with former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte in Beijing Monday, and praised Duterte for making a “strategic choice” to improve ties with Beijing when he was leader.

In addition to who Xi chooses to meet, the setting of the meetings is also a telling sign of the relationship, Wu added.

During his meeting with Blinken in June, Xi was positioned at the head of a table where the rest of the two delegations, including Blinken, sat facing each other on either side.

On Thursday, Xi and Kissinger were seated on the same level across a small tea table in a much more cordial setting.

“The two meetings are very different,” Wu said. “The Chinese are very skilled in shaping the narrative and optics.”

Iraqi protesters break into Swedish embassy in Baghdad over burning of Quran

In response to police in Stockholm approving a demonstration where organisers are apparently preparing another burning of the Muslim holy book, the Quran, hundreds of demonstrators rushed the main gates of the Swedish embassy in the Iraqi city of Baghdad early on Thursday.

Social media videos depicted a sizable crowd of demonstrators inside the Swedish embassy’s perimeter as well as black smoke and fire emanating from the structure.

The demonstration, which is due for Thursday, will take place in Sweden only a few weeks after a lone man lit pages of the Quran on fire outside Stockholm’s biggest mosque, sparking indignation and condemnation from all over the world, including Iraq.

According to AFP, Swedish police said Wednesday they had granted a permit for a protest outside the Iraqi embassy in Stockholm, with media reporting the organizers planned to burn the Muslim holy book.

Stockholm police told AFP they had granted a permit for a “public gathering” outside the Iraqi embassy but did not wish to give further comments on what the protesters were planning.

The Swedish police have stressed that they only grant permits for people to hold public gatherings and not for the activities conducted during them, according to AFP.

At the Baghdad protest eyewitnesses told CNN that the protesters withdrew from the perimeter of the Swedish Embassy after setting part of it on fire “after delivering their message of protest against the act of burning the Holy Book of God.”

Sweden’s embassy staff in Baghdad are all safe amid protests outside of the building, the foreign ministry’s press office told CNN via email.

“We condemn all attacks on diplomats and staff from international organizations. Attacks on embassies and diplomats constitute a serious violation of the Vienna Convention. Iraqi authorities have the responsibility to protect diplomatic missions and diplomatic staff,” it said.

The Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the burning of Sweden’s embassy in Baghdad, the ministry said in statement.

The incident is part of a concerning pattern of assaults on diplomatic missions, posing a significant security threat, the ministry said.

It added that the Iraqi government has taken swift action, instructing competent security authorities to launch an urgent investigation, “measures in order to uncover the circumstances of the incident and identify the perpetrators of this act and hold them accountable according to the law.”

At the end of June, a man burned a copy of Islam’s holy book outside a Stockholm Mosque sparking mass condemnations across the Muslim world.

Images of the event showed he was the only person apart from his translator at the demonstration, which coincided with the Muslim holiday of Eid-al-Adha, one of the most significant dates in the Islamic calendar.

A wild animal, said to be a lioness, is believed to be on the loose in the southwestern section of the German capital on Thursday morning, and Berlin police have advised residents in several areas of the city to stay inside.

Due to an escaped wild animal in the Kleinmachnow, Teltow, and Stahnsdorf (PM) area, kindly stay inside and bring your dogs inside. Local police posted on Twitter early on Thursday that our colleagues were on the scene and were assessing the situation.

According to their most recent report, which was published at 6 a.m. local time, police stated that the wild animal has not yet been spotted and advised residents to phone emergency services if they saw it.

Henry Kissinger, the 100-year-old former US Secretary of State, met with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday, a day after US climate envoy John Kerry concluded his tour to relaunch climate negotiations with China. Kissinger is in Beijing this week on an unexpected visit.

According to official broadcaster CCTV, Xi and Kissinger met at the Diaoyutai official Guesthouse, a diplomatic facility in western Beijing where Chinese leaders frequently host foreign visitors.

Following Kissinger’s meetings with Wang Yi, China’s top diplomat, and Li Shangfu, its defence minister, who has been subject to US sanctions since 2018 because of China’s acquisition of Russian weapons, the two men will meet.

  • Heatwaves and ‘unpreparedness’ for wildfires in UK are ‘disasters waiting to happen’

Heatwaves and ‘unpreparedness’ for wildfires in UK are ‘disasters waiting to happen’

One year after wildfires tore through London, experts are raising the alarm about how ‘unprepared’ the UK is to handle heatwaves.

This week, a heat wave that covered Europe, North America, and Asia caused temperatures to soar to unprecedented heights.

Since the heat has turned the woodlands into tinderboxes, firefighters in Greece and the Canary Islands of Spain have been battling wildfires that have destroyed animals and driven hundreds of people from their homes.

Though the UK has avoided the extreme heat that its European counterparts are experiencing, concerns about the country’s readiness for the heat are growing.

Seeing fire rip through countries has brought back memories of the devastating wildfire this time last year in Wennington, a village about 15 miles from central London, that destroyed 16 homes.

But according to the Fire Brigades Union (FBU), 23 fire engines a day have not been available in London so far this month – or about one in six of the capital’s 142 engines.

WENNINGTON, GREATER LONDON - JULY 25: Homes gutted by fire on July 25, 2022 in Wennington, Greater London. On the day the UK recorded the hottest ever weather temperatures, wildfires spread across England with damage caused to forests, grassland and houses. Wennington, in East London, saw the worst urban damage with houses reduced to rubble. Latest London news

A peak of 28 fire engines was unavailable on July 16, the union claimed. The London Fire Brigade’s (LFB) only fireboat, essential for river rescue and fighting fires, has been unavailable for 13 shifts.

The lack of vehicles has also been down to a lack of staff, too, data obtained by the FBU claimed. Its figures include appliances ‘off the run’ – unavailable – because of a lack of firefighters.

Around one in five firefighter jobs – about 1,100 since 2010 – have been cut even as extreme weather increasingly becomes the norm. This is ‘putting lives and homes at risk’, FBU general secretary Mark Wrack said.

‘One year on from the devastation of last summer’s wildfires, cuts are still leaving the fire service unprepared,’ he said.

‘Londoners should be furious that in the capital city of one of the richest countries in the world, firefighter numbers have been cut so badly that more than 20 fire engines are sitting idle every day.

‘This is a disaster waiting to happen again.’

A major incident review of the LFB detailed how a shortage of staff and fire appliances hampered the brigade’s response to the July 2022 wildfires.

The LFB insisted yesterday that officials are ‘far better prepared’ for a punishing heatwave this year.

Dom Ellis, the LFB’s Assistant Commissioner, said more than 100 new officers have been recruited and all teams have been given specialist wildfire-busting training.

‘We hope in the next year to 18 months we’ll be as near to full establishment as we can get,’ he told The Evening Standard.

He added: ‘We’re bringing forward additional training to get additional recruits through the door so that we can have all of our, or as many of our appliances, on the run as possible.’

Though, experts say that heatwaves and the devastation they bring with them – wildfires, floods and health risks – will soon become a staple of the summer.

Heatwaves aren’t just an especially toasty afternoon, the Met Office says, they’re hot spells of at least three days that break the daily maximum temperatures threshold.

Europe’s heatwaves – one named Cerberus after the three-headed dog that guards the gates of the underworld and the other its raggedy ferryman, Charon – have sent thermometers up to as high as the mid-40s for days.

European governments had plenty of time to prepare. In 2003, more than 70,000 people died due to an exceptionally hot summer in Europe.

Last year, the heat left 61,000 dead, according to a report published last week that researchers admit is a conservative estimate at best.

Given Britain’s reputation when it comes to the weather – think rain, rain and more rain – heat is something of a ‘new challenge’ for the country, Dr Candice Howarth, the head of Local Climate Action and lead of Heat Risk Resilience Hub at the LSE Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment, said.

‘Extreme heat is a relatively new challenge for the UK, and currently, there is insufficient research, policy, and action to ensure communities, businesses and infrastructure are prepared for, and can adequately respond to this impact of climate change,’ she told Metro.co.uk.

‘The UK will become more exposed to heatwaves in future and the hot summers we are seeing today will become more frequent and more intense.’

Dr Friederike Otto, a senior lecturer in climate science at the Grantham Institute – Climate Change and the Environment at Imperial College London, has a few ideas of what needs to be done.

‘In the UK, there are a wide range of challenges. Our cities and homes are not built to deal with extreme heat,’ she said, adding they need to have ‘resilience’ in mind.

More long-term planning is needed, Dr Otto said, as costly and complicated as it can be. Think refitting homes and offices so they aren’t sponges for heat, planting more trees and parks and ensuring that health services are prepared.

‘It should be an absolute no-brainer to do this,’ Dr Otto says.

Last year’s wildfire was a brutal test of how well the UK can cope with the warmth, while Europe’s blistering heat is a reminder of the challenges to come.

‘As well as direct deaths from heatstroke, heatwaves are dangerous for the elderly because extreme heat compromises the body’s ability to deal with existing health problems,’ Dr Otto said.

‘Increased admissions to hospitals due to heatwaves will likely further strain the NHS which is already under immense pressure.’

In 2022, 3,271 excess deaths were recorded during heat periods across England and Wales, according to official figures.

This was an average of 82 excess deaths per day. About 638 more deaths than normal were recorded in England on July 19, the hottest day of that year which saw 40.3°C recorded in Coningsby, Lincolnshire.

Dr Howarth said while it is ‘encouraging’ to see London’s fire brigade introduce specialist wildfire training, the burden mustn’t fall on local services alone.

Government officials need to learn from Europe and establish a ‘culture of heat’, better educating people on how to ‘prepare and respond’.

‘If the government fails to show more leadership on preparing for these extreme heat events, then we are likely to see a rise in heat-related deaths, wider impacts on workers’ health and productivity, and increased overheating in UK homes and buildings that are ill-equipped to stay cool in the summer,’ she added.

For Dr Otto, the temperatures afflicting much of the world are a reminder of how climate change, driven by human-made forces like planet-warming greenhouse gases, is changing the world.

The return of El Niño, a cyclical weather pattern, isn’t helping to keep the world cool either.

The planet has warmed about 1.1°C since the 19th century and, Dr Otto said, will continue getting hotter until countries stop burning coal, oil and gas.

‘Heatwaves will stop getting hotter only when the world reduces global emissions to net zero,’ Dr Otto said. ‘Until this happens, more and more people will die from heat-related causes.’

Accreditation application differs from being accredited – Prof Ahmed Abdulai Jinapor

Deputy Director General of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), Professor Ahmed Abdulai Jinapor, has stated that receiving accreditation is not automatic for institutions even after submitting their applications.

According to him, programmes being unaccredited means they have not been published on the website of the GTEC. He added that rolling out the said programmes spells imprisonment for perpetrators, according to the law.

“Starting from this week till next week, we are going to start publishing all centres, programmes that are run by various institutions that are unaccredited. By law, we are supposed to have published those that are credited, and by inference, it means that if the programme is not published on the GTEC website or in the newspapers, automatically, it is unaccredited,” he said on JoyFM’s Midday.

“It is a “prisonable offence for you to run a programme that is unaccredited or to even advertise it,” he added.

Elaborating further, the Deputy Director established that it is also not appropriate for institutions to advertise programmes after applying for accreditation. Applying for accreditation does not authorise advertisement for said programmes, he cautioned.

Some institutions continue to run programmes without accreditation for same although the GTEC had earlier issued a warning, telling the institutions to desist from doing so.

Presently, the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has over 300 programmes yet to be accredited, according to its Vice Chancellor, Prof. Rita Akosua Dickson.

Responding to audit findings before the Public Accounts Committee, she said most of the programmes are at various stages of accreditation describing it as an unfair suggestion for such programmes to be stopped.

“Currently, we have more than 500 programmes and as we speak, we have about over 140 accredited but some of them are at various stages of accreditation.

“For example, I am able to report that we’ve been working very closely with GTEC to ensure that these programmes are accredited.

“As we speak, we have over 100 programmes that we are expecting GTEC to mobilise faculty and come and review on our campus,” she explained.

Also, authorities of the University of Ghana (UG) say they have taken steps to ensure the accreditation of some of the school’s programmes listed as unaccredited in the 2021 Auditor General’s report.

Speaking at the Public Accounts Committee on Tuesday, Registrar, Emelia Agyei Mensah said, the University has made sure 60 out of 80 undergraduate programmes are now accredited.

“Out of the 80, I would say that currently, we have 60 of the undergraduate programme fully accredited and the rest are in the process of being accredited,” he told the Vice-Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee, Samuel Atta Mills.

Clash between tipper drivers and assembly taskforce in Gomoa East leaves 2 injured”

A violent confrontation between tipper drivers and an assembly taskforce in Gomoa Ojobi, Central Region, resulted in two individuals sustaining injuries. The clash was sparked by disagreements over the payment of a quarry development fund.

The quarry development fund was introduced in 2021 with the objective of using the money to develop communities where these quarries operate. Tipper drivers were mandated to pay between GH¢80 and GH¢100 per trip to the task force for onward payment to the assembly coffers.

However, the Protoa tipper truck drivers from Kasoa rejected the move and failed to pay the said amount to the assembly during their collection yesterday. The taskforce came this morning to collect the monies, resulting in a bloody clash that left two people injured.

According to Benjamin Ankomah, leader of the Protoa Tipper Drivers Association, the drivers were not aware of the new amounts.

“The taskforce came in this morning and engaged our members in a fight over payments of the quarry development fund. They forced our members to pay an amount of GH¢8 to GH¢100 per trip. But the agreement we had with them was to pay GH¢15. Our members have been brutalised by the taskforce. We have taken some to the Awutu Bereku health centre,” Ankomah said.

District Chief Executive for Gomoa East Solomon Darko Quarm told Citi News that the levy has been sanctioned by the assembly but denied the allegations that the taskforce from the assembly physically assaulted the drivers.

“It is not true that our revenue task force assaulted the Tipper Drivers. It was the drivers who attacked our men instead. What money the task force is collecting has been sanctioned by the Assembly. A driver of the task force was severely injured and has been rushed to the hospital. The collectors are operating within the mandate given to them,” the DCE said.

  • Bawumia will win NPP flagbearer race hands down – Farouk Aliu Mahama

Bawumia will win NPP flagbearer race hands down – Farouk Aliu Mahama

Member of Parliament for Yendi, Farouk Aliu Mahama, predicts victory for Dr Mahamudu Bawumia in the upcoming New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential primary.

The Vice President faces stiff opposition from nine other aspirants, five of whom will be dropped to pave the way for a special delegates conference that will elect the presidential candidate for the 2024 election.

Dr Bawumia’s contenders include former Trade Minister, Alan Kyerematen and Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyepong among others. The party has scheduled a special delegates conference on August 26 to whittle the number down to five.

But, Yendi MP Farouk Aliu Mahama believes Dr Bawumia stands tall among his contenders and the delegates will vote for him.

“I did the album in my constituency and I control 700 people in the constituency. My other contestants control 50 each and they are all for Bawumia. So tell me, who are they going to vote for? It’s a done deal for Bawumia,” he stressed.

Farouk Aliu Mahama also fought off claims that MPs have abandoned parliament to campaign for the Vice President. He described the assertions as inaccurate.

For some days now, Parliament has struggled to form a quorum to do business with the Minority claiming that NPP MPs are following the Vice President around.

According to Farouk Aliu Mahama, the NPP MPs respect their duties in Parliament and have never left the House to follow the Vice President on his campaign tours.

“The MPs from the Ashanti Region who were with Dr Bawumia are back in Parliament and the quorum issues in Parliament have nothing to do with the MPs following Bawumia. I am a strong supporter of the Vice President, but I’m here to do my duties. The NDC’s strategy of trying to tie everything to Dr Bawumia is a signal that he is a threat to John Mahama.”

Meanwhile, the National Council of the New Patriotic Party is expected to deliberate and decide on the recommendations of the vetting committee on the flagbearer aspirants on Thursday.

It follows the adoption of the committee’s report by the National Steering Committee of the party at its meeting in Accra last Tuesday.

The Professor Aaron Mike Oquaye presidential vetting committee cleared all the 10 aspirants in the upcoming presidential primary subject to the approval of the National Council.

10 Civilians killed in Burkina Faso in alleged terrorist attack

On Tuesday, Burkina Faso‘s junta leader strongly condemned the “cowardice” of the country’s jihadist rebels following reports of two attacks that resulted in the deaths of at least 10 civilians, as confirmed by local and security sources.

Residents of Nouna, the local capital of Kossi province in the west, contacted by telephone, said shells hit the town late Monday.

“The toll is six dead and four wounded,” one resident said.

Nouna has in recent months become a refuge for thousands of people who have fled repeated jihadist assaults on their homes.

A security source confirmed the attack on Nouna to AFP, saying “fragments of rockets were found in the area.”

The same evening some 400 kilometres (250 miles) to the south, Tondoura, near the border with Ivory Coast, also came under attack, a local official told AFP asking not to be named.

“Terrorists attacked the village,” he said. “Some villagers, armed with rifles, tried to intervene but were quickly overrun. “We have at least four dead, some wounded and various physical damage.”

    Locals hide from suspected jihadists

Several locals said that, for more than a month, people have been forced to seek shelter from suspected jihadists in the nearby towns of Niangoloko and Banfora.

Junta leader Captain Ibrahim Traore, who seized power in a coup in September last year, denounced the jihadists for their “cowardice” and admitted “increasingly frequent attacks against civilians.”

Speaking during a meeting with representatives of women’s associations from across the West African country, Traore also lashed out at the “imperialists” he said, “imposed this war.”

An economic structural adjustment program by the International Monetary Fund, implemented in the 1990s, was “a way of weakening our armies. They succeeded,” he said.

    Junta faces insurgency

Burkina Faso’s ruling military junta faces a jihadist insurgency that swept in from neighbouring Mali in 2015.

Anger within the military at failures to roll back the insurgency sparked two coups last year.

More than 10,000 civilians, troops and police have died in the violence, according to an NGO count, while at least 2 million people have been displaced.

Bia West Assembly presents furniture to Education Directorate

The Bia West District Chief Executive in the Western North Region, Mr Benard Gyebi Blay, on behalf of the District Assembly, has donated furniture to the Bia West Education Directorate with the aim of enhancing education in schools within the district.

The furniture funded by the Accountability Outcome Programme (GALOP) comprised 140 dual desks, 34 Teacher table and Chairs and 60 sets of hexagonal tables and chairs, would be distributed schools, including Oseikrom English and Arabic, Essam D/A Primary A, Debeiso Methodist Primary C and Sikaneasem D/A primary school.

Presenting the furniture to the Education Directorate, Mr Blay said the lack of furniture was the major challenge of schools in the district hence the decision by the assembly to provide them with furniture.

He explained the Bia West District was among six other Districts in the Western North Region to benefit from the GALOP programme.

Mr Blay thanked GALOP programme for the support and said the furniture had come at the right time, since it was Government’s vision to provide conducive environment for teaching and learning in the area.

Mr Thomas Kwofie, Bia West District Director of Education, who received the furniture on behalf of the Education Directorate lauded the government for the furniture.

He, however, appealed for more chairs to be distributed among schools that have inadequate furniture so as to improve upon education in the area.

  • Kenneth Ashigbey calls for shifting ICT exams from theory to practical

Kenneth Ashigbey calls for shifting ICT exams from theory to practical

Ghana Chamber of Telecommunication CEO, Dr Kenneth Ashigbey, has urged the Ghana Education Service (GES) and stakeholders to prioritize practicality in Information Communication and Technology (ICT) courses.

Dr Ashigbey emphasised that the current teaching and assessment methods for ICT, reliant on books, fail to effectively impart knowledge to children. He asserted the urgent need for a shift towards hands-on training in emerging technological advancements to empower the younger generation.

He said children could come up with workable solutions to problems in their communities by making use of technology to solve their everyday and community problems.

Dr Ashigbey made the call at a day’s training on coding under the ‘Coding Caravan for 200 pupils and 67 teachers from public basic schools in the Ningo-Prampram District.

The training is a digital skills education campaign initiated by the Ghana Chamber of Telecommunication in partnership with the Institute of ICT Professionals Ghana.

He indicated that when the curriculum at schools was geared towards being more practical, stakeholders and industry players would buy into the idea and partner with the educational system, to provide the needed logistics and equipment to train the pupils.

He said children were digital natives who always found their way out on how to use gadgets; therefore, giving them the basic training and access to ICT tools would make it easy to prepare them for the current world and the future.

Mr David Gowu, the Executive Director of the Institute of ICT Professional Ghana, reiterated the need to practicalize ICT training and examinations.

He said, “ICT for all levels must be practical based, with at least 50 percent theory and 50 percent practical.”

Mr Gowu said with the current global adoption and use of artificial intelligence to solve several human problems, children must receive more practical ICT training from the basic level to be able to explore and exploit the field just like their peers elsewhere.

In Ghana, even though some of the pupils passed their ICT examinations on paper, they had never seen a computer before, which meant they would encounter difficulties functioning well on the job market, as they would be expected to use the machines that they did not have any practical experience wit, he stated.

He said it was for this reason the Coding Caravan was initiated, to bring ICT practicality closer to the children by creating awareness and excitement among the kids to pursue ICT programmes.

  • CPP aims to empower women and overcome psychological barriers

CPP aims to empower women and overcome psychological barriers

Chairperson of the Convention Peoples’ Party (CPP), Nanahemaa Akosua Frimponmaa Sarpong Kumankuma, announces the party’s plan to implement a strategy aimed at empowering women to overcome psychological and mental obstacles.

“Today’s women must face challenges and bottlenecks to thrive under this current global dispensation,” Nanahemaa Kumankuma explained.

She noted, “The way we see gender roles is formed and perpetuated by our interactions with our social environment. Our perceptions about these roles unconsciously influence how we value the contribution of individuals around us”.

The CPP Chairperson stated this at a stakeholder engagement organized by the Ghana News Agency Tema Regional Office, which is a platform rolled out for state and non-state actors to address national issues.

Speaking on the topic, “The Path of Women Entrepreneurs: Challenges and Prospects,” Nanahemaa Kumankuma, who is the CPP Election 2024 Flagbearer Hopeful, stressed that women have a lot of potential that could be harnessed to scale up national development.

She explained that Articles 17 (1) and (2) of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution guarantee gender equality and freedom of women and men, girls and boys, from discrimination based on social or economic status, among others.

She, therefore, urged women to pick up the tools and break the glass ceilings, stressing that efforts for gender equity would continue to be a mirage if “women failed to confront the issues.

She noted, however, that issues of concern include Inequality in access to social protection for the marginalized, vulnerable, and poor.

“Inequalities in the burden of extreme poverty, education, skilled training gaps, and excess maternal mortality; and Unequal access to socio-economic power and justice, including lack of respect for and inadequate protection and promotion of women’s human rights.

“Inequalities between women and men in the sharing of power and decision-making at all levels, as well as dealing with all kinds of conflicts, insecurities, and threats against women,” she said.

She stated that the Ghanaian woman, when given the opportunity, could make lots of gains for the family and nation.

According to her, women formed much of the population, saying that more women must endeavour to take up leadership roles to help fine-tune the needs of the public.

Nanahemaa Kumankuma also said it was time for women to learn to be entrepreneurs, stressing that only three percent of the entire population were employed in government institutions, a situation she said could be remedied if people acquired skills to be self-reliant.

  • Dr Kpodar proposes leveraging Artificial Intelligence as an anti-corruption measure

Dr Kpodar proposes leveraging Artificial Intelligence as an anti-corruption measure

Dr Chris Kpodar, Global Artificial Intelligence Specialist, is advocating for the utilisation of artificial intelligence as a powerful anti-corruption tool by reengineering systems to address vulnerabilities that were previously susceptible to bribery and corruption.

“As a nation, we must adopt Artificial Intelligence as a mechanism to build transparency, integrity, and trustworthiness, which are necessary to fight corruption,” he said.

Dr Kpodar, who served as Consultant for Africa and the Middle East, was speaking at a forum organised by the Ghana News Agency in Tema and advised governments and companies on investment in these technologies.

He explained that without effective public scrutiny, the risk of money being lost to corruption and misappropriation was vast.

He said Artificial Intelligence was the modernisation of all traditional, experienced, and tested methods of investigation that could not be influenced by the machine applied.

Dr Kpodar, who is also the Executive Director at Solomon Investment Ghana Limited, stressed that even though corruption remained the biggest challenge to society, Artificial Intelligence was the key to solving the problem.

Dr Kpodar emphasised that the ability of Artificial Intelligence applications to work would radically reduce or eliminate manual operations, which formed fertile grounds for corrupt practice.

“Artificial Intelligence has the capacity to reveal or even predict corruption or fraud that was previously nearly or completely impossible to detect. If the government wants to be credible in every sector, they must invest in Artificial Intelligence for an everlasting solution to corruption,” Dr Kpodar stated.

Dr Kpodar, however, commended the government for initiating the digitization system, saying digitisation was a prerequisite for Artificial Intelligence deployment as an anti-corruption weapon.

  • World Bank says some 850,000 Ghanaians were pushed into poverty in 2022

World Bank says some 850,000 Ghanaians were pushed into poverty in 2022

The World Bank has stated that the increasing cost of goods and services in 2022 resulted in approximately 850,000 Ghanaians falling into poverty.

The Bank said this in its latest Ghana Economic Update report titled: “Price Surge: Unravelling Inflation’s Toll on Poverty and Food Security,” launched in Accra on Wednesday.

The inflationary pressures, the Bank said, had led to a deterioration in living standards and ultimately, worsened poverty and food insecurity among Ghanaian households.

It recommended that policymakers increased efforts to restore economic stability, alleviate the plight of farmers, including the high cost of fertilizer, and widen the reach of social intervention programmes to protect the vulnerable.

The Bretton Wood Institution also recommended that in the medium-to-long-term, policy actions focused more on investments in agriculture research and technology transfers.

Such investments, the Bank said, should be aimed at helping increase domestic production and reduce production costs, while improving the quality and safety of food.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency, Mr Paul Corral, A Senior Economist with the World Bank, said the Bank used monetary indicators to measure the annual household income and expenditure and observed that inflation had pushed a lot of people into poverty.

Speaking at the launch of the report, Mr Kwabena Gyan Kwakye, a World Bank Economist, explained that the 2022 macroeconomic shocks, particularly inflation, had more adverse impact on the poor.

He said the next two years (by 2025), where the country was expected to recover from the current economic crisis, would “be very tricky for Ghana’s poverty reduction efforts”.

“Without bringing the economy back on track, no meaningful poverty reduction can happen. Concurrently, safety nets to protect the most vulnerable need to be enhanced to ensure sustainable poverty reduction and shared prosperity,” he said.

“Expanding and increasing transfers of the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) could ensure the poorest are able to cope and build resilience to future shocks,” the World Bank Economist and co-author of the report said.

Mr Ashwini Sebastian, a Senior Agricultural Economist with the World Bank, also called for support for farmers to adjust to global demand and take advantage of market opportunities.

She said that should be a long-term focus by policymakers to mitigate the impact of inflation on food security.

“This is particularly relevant since many of the poor are farming households. Policies should, therefore, be evidence based and aimed at alleviating the different constraints farmers face,” he added.

In the 2017 Ghana Living Standards Survey by the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS), 45.6 per cent of Ghana’s population was multidimensionally poor, with 23.4 per cent others being consumption expenditure poor.

In essence, they were deprived of electricity, water, housing, sanitation, including access to toilet facilities, school attendance and attainment, nutrition and health insurance.

Mr John Foster Agyaho, a Principal Statistician, GSS, explained during a panel discussion that about a third of the items in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) basket for measuring inflation was food.

He, said it was important for the Government to prioritse connecting road networks to farmers by addressing the transportation and storage bottlenecks, and implement proactive measures to attract more youth into agriculture.

Ghana’s inflation stood at 54.1 per cent in December 2022, which was characterised by a surge in food costs, a report by GSS showed.

It was during that period that a Ghana News Agency report revealed that workers, formal and informal, had resorted to walking long-distances, riding bicycles, and engaging in carpooling to manage the economic hardship.

Meanwhile, the World Bank report signalled that Ghana’s economy would recover to its potential growth by 2025.

This is dependent on government’s implementation of structural reforms to tackle the root causes of the economic crisis, boost economic growth, and build economic resilience through the country’s US$3 billion 17th financial bailout programme with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

“Growth will begin to recover to its potential by 2025 as drag from fiscal consolidation fades and macroeconomic stabilisation and structural reforms start bearing fruit,” Mr Pierre Frank Laporte, World Bank Country Director for Ghana, Liberia, and Sierra Leone, said.

  • Ghana and Portugal ink Defence and Economic Agreements

Ghana and Portugal ink Defence and Economic Agreements

In a move to strengthen their bilateral relations, Ghana and Portugal have signed a cooperation agreements on Tuesday, aiming to enhance mutual ties between the two nations.

They signed bilateral instruments of co-operation in defence, political consultation and trade.

“This latest form of agreement will go a long way to strengthen the ties of friendship and the bonds of co-operation between Ghana and Portugal.” President Akufo-Addo said at a joint press conference with President Marcelo Rebelo De Sousa, as part of his three-day State Visit to Portugal.

He said Ghana was determined “to turn our back on our old economy, which has been dependent on the production and export of raw materials, and also dependent on aid.”

“We want to build a value-added, industrialised economy with a modernised agriculture, which is neither victim nor pawn of the world economic order. We want our relations with Portugal and, indeed, the rest of the world, to be characterised by an increase in trade and investment co-operation.

“This is the way to develop healthy relations between our two countries and put Ghana at the high end of the value chain in the global marketplace, and create jobs for the teeming masses of Ghanaians, particularly the youth,” he stated.

The President indicated that his discussions with his Portuguese counterpart also focused on boosting further political, cultural, people-to-people exchanges and cooperation at the multilateral level and on the need to promote a better world by addressing global issues relating to the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

“We have noted with satisfaction the value that the Ghana-Portugal Business Forum scheduled to be held tomorrow will add to our investment initiatives, he said.”

President Akufo-Addo disclosed that the President of Portugal had also resolved to give voice to Ghana’s cause and interests within the European Union.

Ghana would also help to facilitate the provision of a platform for enhanced economic engagement between Portugal and the member countries of ECOWAS to boost the trade volumes.

On global security, the President said Ghana and Portugal looked forward to Russia, China and the United Kingdom throwing their support behind United States of America and France towards the reform process of the United Nations Security Council in line with the Ezulwini consensus.

He assured President De Sousa that Ghana will “collaborate with Portugal to find solutions to challenges such as the eradication of widespread poverty, elimination of irregular migration, insecurity and human rights violations, terrorism and violent extremism, human and drug trafficking, piracy, as well as climate change and its attendant, negative impact on the environment and livelihoods.”

President Akufo-Addo later called at the Lisbon City Council, where he was handed the keys to the city of Lisbon by the Deputy Mayor, Filipe Anacoreta Correia.

In his address, the President stated that history holds ample lessons that shows “that a rich trading partner, operating within a fair, trading system, brings prosperity to both sides, far more than the exploitation of a poor partner.”

“I have come to Lisbon to advocate for increased investment and trade between our two nations. Trade relations between Ghana and Portugal have evolved through history, and a new paradigm has to be defined, which will be dependent on the structural transformation of the Ghanaian economy from a raw material producing and exporting economy, to a value-adding, industrialising economy.

“This will enable Ghana trade at the high end of the global value chain, dealing in products we make and grow. Out of this, a robust trading system between Portugal and Ghana will be created, which will generate mutual prosperity for the peoples of the two countries,” he said.

  • Dr Brightson raises alarm over alarming attrition rates of nurses and health workers

Dr Brightson raises alarm over alarming attrition rates of nurses and health workers

Medical Director at Shai Osudoku District Hospital, Dr Kennedy Tettey Coffie Brightson, has expressed deep concern over the alarming rate of nurses departing the country.

He said these were well-trained and qualified people who have acquired certain specialised skills “to use in helping us manage our patients and manage the hospital as a whole but they leave for greener pastures.”

Dr Brightson made the comment when the Street Sense Organisation, an NGO championing road safety in the country, presented branded mattresses and washing soap worth over GHC 37,000 to the hospital.

He, therefore, called on the government to look at the situation and see how best to come up with policies that would help address it.

“It is a continuous thing. Only yesterday one of nurses left us. This is not only happening in Shai Osudoku hospital, but it cuts across all other hospitals in the country.”

He said another challenge facing the hospital was electricity supply and expressed the hope that government was working around the clock to solve the problem.

“The problem we have here is that we spend a lot of money on fuel to keep the hospital running. I am thinking that we have a very vast roof that hits the sun rightly from 7 am and this vast roof can be converted into a solar farm, so we can harvest power from the farm and use it,” he added.

On maternal mortality, he said: “These days, periodically, we get one or two or three, just because everybody when they are practically dying somewhere else, they push them here, so sometimes by the time we turn around to save them they die. But when you die on our compound you become our statistics, you become our data.”

Dr Brightson said that for five consecutive years, not long ago, with increasing antenatal attendance and increasing deliveries, they maintained zero maternal mortality.

He said even during the COVID-19 era, in 2020, they were the only hospital that saw an increase in deliveries of 9.6 per cent and in 2022 it also increased by about 6.7 per cent.

“So, it means that every pregnant woman targets our hospital as a place they can have safe deliveries. It does not necessarily mean that we are the best, but we are only trying to be the best.”

He attributed their success story to their teamwork, adding, “when you move around and you see the place, the first thing that comes to mind is that this place has no challenges.”

“The fundamental thing we do here is that we play teamwork a lot. So, whatever you see is because of our teamwork that we have been able to achieve this,” he explained.

Lightning strikes 21 cows dead at Kowie

A rainfall, thunder and lightning strike which occurred in Kowie, a community located in the Sissala East Municipality has claimed the lives of 21 cows, leaving residents in shock and devastation.

The thunderstorms took place at about 0020hrs where the kraal of cattle gathered under a tree in the community.

When the Ghana News Agency (GNA) got to the community after the incident, the cows were found dead and uniquely arranged around a tree except for two of them that survived the thunderstorm.

Mr Thomas Tipuri, a community member, said 16 of the cattle belonged to a herdsman whom he did not name and had been settled in the community whilst five belonged to him.

He said some traditional priests were immediately called in to perform some rituals before the carcasses were taken away.

He said the families of the owners of the cattle were sad and pained over the loss.

Mr Yakubu Abu, who also hailed from the community, expressed shock at the calamity saying, “This has never happened in the community.”

He said lightning is known to strike tall objects such as trees or poles, but it is possible that the lightning struck a nearby object and then travelled through the ground and affected the cows.

“If you are caught outside during a storm, it is important to avoid sheltering under trees or other tall objects and to seek shelter in a low-lying area if possible”, Madam Francesca Martey of the Ghana Meteorological Authority advised.

  • Be warned, aphrodisiacs can totally close vagina opening – Obstetric Gynecologist cautions women

Be warned, aphrodisiacs can totally close vagina opening – Obstetric Gynecologist cautions women

Obstetric Gynecologist, Dr Alfred Adu-Boateng, has issued a warning against the indiscriminate use of aphrodisiacs by women, emphasizing that it can lead to complete closure of the vaginal opening.

He said the practice could also lead to brain damage and increase the rate of one’s heartbeat, leading to death.

Dr Adu-Boateng in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) said that was because, some aphrodisiacs, especially the local ones, may contain undisclosed ingredients, which may interact negatively with existing medications.

“There is a real danger associated with the uninformed and unsupervised use of aphrodisiacs. Many of these products may contain undisclosed ingredients or may interact negatively with existing medications that may put women at risk.

“The excessive use of some of these products may even cause total closure to the vaginal opening, especially those used to tighten it,” he stressed.

Some dealers in aphrodisiacs told the GNA that more women were patronising their products, with many on ‘monthly allocations’.

“We see more women come to buy from us now than before; both married and unmarried. This was not the case some years back, but the numbers keep expanding as more women are introduced to it.

“Some of the women who come to us will usually complain of low libido, vagina laxity and a lack of interest in sex so, we give these enhancements to help them get their libido back…,” one vendor said.

He said the commonly patronised ones were ‘honey chocolate’, ‘tea bag’, ‘toffee’, ‘chewing stick’ and ‘gorontula’.

Adwoa Smart, 34, who the GNA met gathering a few aphrodisiacs at the Old Tema Station Lorry Terminal, said: “They saved my marriage.”

Another client, Serwa Akoto, said: “I enjoy them with my boyfriend.”

“I am 50 years old and to tell you the truth, for a long time, I have not had any sexual urge at all so, I occasionally prepare concoctions from roots, herbs and some spices and they help so, I do same for my clients,” Maame Akua, a vendor, said.

Dr. Adu-Boateng said while taking aphrodisiacs may be appealing to some women, there were dangers associated with the use without a medical doctor’s advice.

He encouraged women to consult with medical professionals before trying any new health product because individual needs and medical considerations varied.

Aphrodisiacs are said to be substances that increase one’s libido. They are also said to address fertility problems or secondary sexual dysfunction such as erectile problems.

Most aphrodisiacs contain herbs, roots, and fruits such as tiger nuts, coconuts, ginger.

Some come in the form of herbal supplements, alcoholic beverages, toffees, sticks, creams, and gels.

Experts say many aphrodisiacs lack scientific evidence to support their claims of effectiveness and safety.

Also, the potency and purity of the products remain unverified, increasing the risk of adverse reactions and health complications.

  • 9 lives were lost to fire outbreaks in Ashanti region during the first half of 2023

9 lives were lost to fire outbreaks in Ashanti region during the first half of 2023

In the first half of the year 2023, nine individuals lost their lives, and property valued at over GHc51,319,900.00 was destroyed in fire incidents, as reported by authorities.

In all, a total of 581 fire outbreaks were recorded in the first half of the year as against 700 recorded in the same period in 2022.

The figure represents a 17 per cent reduction in fire incidences in the region.

Divisional Officer Three (DO111) Mr Peter Addaid, Ashanti Regional Public Relations Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service, made this known in an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Kumasi.

He attributed the reduction to intensified public education campaign on the dangers and effects of fire, embarked upon by the Service.

He said aside the public education, the Command also conducted regular fire safety inspections and audits at various places of interest.

According to him, the number of fires recorded at the end of the second quarter of 2023 compared to that of the first quarter of the same year showed a significant reduction.

In the first quarter of 2023, a total of 390 fire incidents were recorded while 191 fires were reported in the second quarter of the year.

He said the Regional Command had continually conducted simulation exercises at various premises including the Kejetia Market, the biggest hub for trading activities in Ashanti, to adequately prepare for any future occurrences.

These exercises are meant to validate and enhance preparedness and response plans, procedures and systems for all hazards and capabilities.

Mr Addai said the reduction in fire incidents was a good signal that people were adhering to practices and tips from fire officers.

He called on Ghanaians to remain fire safety conscious saying, “a stitch in time saves nine”, prevention, as we all know, is cheaper than the damage caused after an outbreak of fire.”

  • Inusah Fuseini declares stance on abolition of the death penalty

Inusah Fuseini declares stance on abolition of the death penalty

Former MP for Tamale Central, Inusah Fuseini, has expressed his endorsement for the abolition of the death penalty in Ghana.

According to him, the existing law is in itself redundant, and the need to abolish it is the right step.

Speaking in an interview, the former MP explained that the essence of the death penalty doesn’t apply any longer because there is a need for persons caught in such webs to receive compassion.

“I stand for the abolition of the death penalty. Evidence abound that many people have been subjected that penal punishment when subsequent evidence exonerates them. That is number one. Number two, that is the old law where it says death for death, an eye for an eye. No.

“You should look at the Bentham Theory. There must be utility for a punishment. Why are we punishing a person? We punish the person to reform, so if we kill that person, we deny that person the opportunity to reform. The reformative aspect of punishment is something that should engage our thinking and our understanding. People have committed grievous offenses need compassion; need our love; need empathy and so you sentence them to death, they are hanged or shot, and then is that compassion?”

“Thirdly, I don’t know the last time anyone who was sentenced to death was ever killed. So, the language at the Nsawam is under debilitating conditions, we treat them in an inhuman way. The constitution says that the dignity of a human being is invaluable, meanwhile, go and see them,” he stated.

MPs divided over a proposal to replace the death penalty with life imprisonment

On Friday, July 14, 2023 Members of Parliament (MPs) in Ghana found themselves at odds regarding the report presented by the Constitutional, Legal, and Parliamentary Affairs Committee on the amendment to the Criminal Offences Act.

The proposed amendment aims to substitute the death penalty with life imprisonment.

Although the death penalty was initially inherited from the colonial era as a punishment for offenses like murder, attempted murder, genocide, piracy, and smuggling of gold or diamonds, Ghana has refrained from executing offenders since 1993.

During the parliamentary debate on the amendment bill, MPs expressed varying opinions concerning the abolishment of the death penalty.

Cletus Avoka, the MP for Zebilla Constituency, voiced his concerns, stating, “I first submit that the arguments they have advanced in terms of the motion are very scary and have no measures at all. Arguments in favor of the motion are unmeritorious.”

On the other hand, Francis-Xavier Sosu, the MP for Madina and a proponent of the amendment, emphasized Ghana’s current stance, saying, “the current position of Ghana is that we are abolitionists in practice. This is so because, since 1993 to date, Ghana has not signed a death warrant to execute anyone, and that is very commendable.”

During the debate, James Agalga, the Builsa North MP, and Habib Iddrisu, the Second Deputy Majority Whip, pointed out a correction, stating, “We cannot count universal declaration on human rights as part of our treaty obligations with the greatest of respect. The universal declarations on human rights are declarations; they are non-binding, and so they do not qualify as a treaty.”

  • Accept ‘half a loaf’ – NDC MP appeals to Free SHS food suppliers on arrears payment

Accept ‘half a loaf’ – NDC MP appeals to Free SHS food suppliers on arrears payment

Builsa South MP, Dr Clement Apaak, has urged Free SHS food suppliers to consider accepting a 50% payment of their arrears, as proposed by the government.

The MP said that even though he is dismayed by the failure of the government to pay the suppliers for several months, they should accept the 50 per cent payment for now, 3news.com reports.

He, however, cautioned the government not to allow the ordeal the suppliers went through happen again.

“Half a loaf is better than none is what I will say. First of all, my hope is that the food suppliers would accept the 50 per cent payment. You will recall that only yesterday [Monday, July 17] they had indicated that they wanted full payment so whether they will accept the 50 percent or not we are yet to see.

“Let this be the last time that we are witnessing such a situation. Government should endeavour to meet its obligations to people that it has a contractual agreement with, particularly to supplying food to our students in the secondary schools,” Dr Apaak is quoted to have said by 3news.com.

    Background:

The Minister of Food and Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong, announced that 50 per cent of the outstanding payments owed to food suppliers will be disbursed by the end of Wednesday, July 19, 2023,

He disclosed this when he appeared before Parliament to respond to questions over the debt owed to suppliers, Tuesday, July 18, 2023.

He told the MPs that a sum of 100 million, representing 50% of the total debt of 203 million, was already transferred to the accounts of the food suppliers on Monday, July 17, 2023.

“Last week, we received ¢100million which is 50% of what is due to the suppliers’ and we have supplied the same to the Buffer stock. We are hoping that by midweek this week that 50% will be sent to suppliers. I have also assured you that by the 17th of August, the remaining 50% will be paid,” he said.

The food suppliers picketed at the National Food Buffer Stock Company for days over the failure of the government to pay them for their services since 2021.

  • Ghana Police Service, two other institutions that denied Suhuyini’s ‘land guard’ allegation

Ghana Police Service, two other institutions that denied Suhuyini’s ‘land guard’ allegation

Member of Parliament representing Tamale North Constituency, Alhassan Sayibu Suhuyini, made a claim accusing the government of engaging land guards to safeguard state lands.

The lawmaker’s accusation was in response to a statement made by Professor Patrick Agbesinyale, the Chief Director of the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources (MLNR), during a meeting with the Parliamentary Select Committee on Lands and Forestry.

In that meeting, the director indicated that the ministry has allegedly resorted to engaging a land guard to retrieve and protect government lands.

Ghana has been grappling with the rate at which state lands are being encroached upon by individuals, organisations and groups.

The government in 2012 began a state land reclamation exercise aimed at repossessing lands that belong to the state but have been encroached upon illegally.

In doing this, the MP for Tamale North said the government is engaging the services of some land guards to protect the state lands as the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources cannot protect these lands themselves.

However, moments after the lawmaker made these claims, all three of the institutions that were indited by the MP came out to vehemently refute the claims.

Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources

In a statement dated July 17, 2023, the ministry said it wants to set the record straight.

It indicated that the government and for that matter, the ministry does not contract the services to assist in reclaiming encroached government lands.

The ministry stated that it has only engaged the services of Aynok Holding Limited, a registered limited liability company to assist in the reclamation process.

    Ghana Armed Forces

After the Ministry came out, the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) also released their statement on the same day to disassociate themselves from the claims by the MP for Tamale North.

In their statement, the forces described the claim as ‘unimaginable’ that the military cannot protect its lands but rather indulge in illegality by relying on the services of land guards.

As an institution responsible for protecting the frontiers of the country against external threats, the Armed Forces indicated that it remains focused on making the country safe against external forces from the Sahel Region.

    Ghana Police Service

The last of the three is the Ghana Police Service who also stated in their statement that the claim by the MP is baseless, false and unfounded.

In their statement, the service stated that it has not on any occasion engaged the services of land guards to reclaim or protect its lands as it is being claimed by the Alhassan Suhuyini.

It went on to say that the service has in recent times intensified its anti-land guard operations in communications affected by the activities of these land guards and this renewed effort will not stop until perpetrators of such illegal activities are brought to justice.

  • Parks and Gardens face impending workforce shortage with 90% of staff nearing retirement

Parks and Gardens face impending workforce shortage with 90% of staff nearing retirement

The Department of Parks and Gardens, the governmental body entrusted with nurturing the nation’s horticultural development, confronts a grave human resource challenge. With over 90% of its workforce slated to retire within the next half-decade, the agency is confronted with an urgent task of filling numerous vacancies nationwide.

This is according to a Daily Graphic newspaper report dated July 19, 2023.

Established in 1961, the department once boasted a workforce of over 2,000 individuals, including technical officers, gardeners, and labourers.

However, over the years, due to retirement and no replacements made, this has resulted in a complete depletion of staff.

Despite its mandate to enhance and promote beautiful landscapes in cities and towns across the country, the department has suffered from insufficient investment, low patronage, and overall neglect from the government.

The Department of Parks and Gardens, the state agency responsible for the development of the country’s horticultural potential, is facing a human resource crisis, as over 90 per cent of its staff are due for retirement within the next five years.

Now operating as an agency under the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralization, and Rural Development (MLGDRD), the Department of Parks and Gardens is in complete jeopardy.

Some of the concerned workers of the department have said that the workforce is rapidly declining without significant efforts to replenish it. Regional offices have become redundant as major towns lack Parks and Gardens workers.

“This has made some of our regional offices redundant because, in most of the major towns, we do not have Parks and Gardens workers.

“In a matter of five years, Parks and Gardens risks becoming extinct because the majority of the remaining staff are aged and nearing retirement,” one of the senior staff members is quoted to have said.

Another senior staff also highlighted that some regions, such as the Western Region have only 21 workers, the Northern Region has 16 workers, and the Upper West Region with eight workers.

“Western Region has only 21 workers, Northern Region 16 workers and Upper West Region eight workers,” the senior staff lamented.

The workers highlighted the consequences of neglect and low demand for the department’s services, fearing that the 62-year-old institution may collapse.
The lack of personnel means that a single worker now handles duties that were previously performed by a team of more than 20 people.

Additionally, employees’ expressed that the neglect and understaffing of the agency will hinder the department’s efforts to support the President’s initiative to make the country the cleanest in Africa

Dr Daniel Kingsford Adams, who is the Chief Horticultural Officer of the Department of Parks and Gardens, confirmed the diminishing staff strength.

He stated that the supervising ministry is engaging with the Ministry of Finance to secure approval for recruiting more workers.

While some vehicles and a few workers have been provided recently, Dr Adams emphasizes the need for a staff strength of approximately 2,000 to revitalize the department.

“Since I took over last year, the ministry, through the effort of the sector Minister, Dan Botwe, provided us with new vehicles, including two big trucks, a Landcruiser Prado, a tractor, two pickups and working machines. Other than that, the department had no vehicles.
“We have also been provided with about 10 workers, but we need a staff strength of about 2,000 to make the department vibrant once again,” he said.

Dr Adams also emphasised the primary role of the department which is to maintain the horticultural plants in the median and shoulders of all roads in the country.

“We are also mandated to create open spaces for recreational centres, and so some of our projects included Efua Sutherland Park, Afrikiko in Accra.
“The department also does research into medicinal plants, many of which we have in the Aburi Botanical Gardens.
“We also do landscaping for public and private houses, and maintain prestige facilities such as the Jubilee House, Peduase Lodge and other government facilities,” he added.

The Department of Parks and Gardens’ mandate is derived from the 1992 Constitution and Section 12 of the PNDCL 327. Over the years, the Department of Parks and Gardens has experienced various ministerial changes from 1970 to 2000, including being under the oversight of the Ministries of Works and Housing, Local Government and Rural Development, and Environment and Science.

However, its core responsibilities remain intact, aiming to enhance the country’s horticultural landscape and contribute to its development.

  • Election 2024: Grounds are fertile for NDC but Bawumia can change the dynamics – Manasseh Azure

Election 2024: Grounds are fertile for NDC but Bawumia can change the dynamics – Manasseh Azure

Investigative journalist Manasseh Azure has predicted that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is likely to win the 2024 elections, however, Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia can change the dynamics if given the nod as the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

In a tweet, he stated that: “The grounds are fertile for an NDC victory in 2024. However, if Dr. Bawumia wins the NPP primaries, some important dynamics will change.”

His statement comes at a time when the NDC has already elected a presidential candidate while the NPP is preparing to elect one.

In his tweet, he entreated the National Democratic Congress to work extra hard and eschew any form of complacency in order to win the ultimate goal which is the seat of the presidency.

“The NDC must work extra hard to win. The odds will still favour the NDC, but any form of complacency will result in an upset,” he added.

The 2024 elections will be a keenly contested race, especially, between the two main political parties, the NPP and the NDC. The NDC is certain their long standing flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, is the best candidate to secure the seat of the president, thereby reelecting him to lead the party.

The NPP on the other hand is expected to elect a flagbearer in November. All 10 flagbearer hopefuls of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) have been cleared to contest in the upcoming primaries slated for November 4, 2023.

They are former Trade Minister, Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, Kwadwo Poku an energy expert, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former Energy Minister Boakye Kyerematen Agyarko, former General Secretary of the NPP, Kwabena Agyei Agyapong.

The others are Assin Central MP, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, Dr. Kofi Konadu Apraku, a former Offinso North MP,  former Agric Minister, Dr. Owusu Akoto Afriyie, a former Attorney General Joe Ghartey and  Francis Addai-Nimoh, former MP for Asante Mampong.

My dad kicked me out of the house when I became an actor – Jim Iyke–

Veteran Nollywood actor, Jim Iyke, shared a poignant account of his journey as an actor, revealing that his decision to pursue acting led to a difficult moment with his father. Jim Iyke disclosed that his dad, after his first degree at the age of 18, wanted him to pursue further education, but he defied his wishes to follow his passion for acting. This decision resulted in his eviction from his home at that time.

During an appearance on the latest episode of the Is This Seat Taken podcast, hosted by actress Chinasa Anukam, Jim Iyke revealed that while his late mother supported his decision to join the film industry, it was a significant turning point in his life.

She provided him with the opportunity to realize himself as an actor, even though his choice led to a strained relationship with his father. Jim Iyke’s success in the film industry proves that his mother’s support played a crucial role in shaping his career.

He said, “I was a straight-A student. And the course was already, I mean, you know the Igbo parent, they decide your life before you are born and probably after you die if they outlive you.

“I was about 18 and a half when I finished my first degree. The idea was, ‘Get your MBA.’ That was the whole plan. My dad’s boss is American, so he already had a setup. And I came home one day and said, I think I really want to be an actor.

“Now, my dad’s fair argument then was that I’m excruciatingly shy. Now, how come you come out? A well-known introvert comes out to say, You want to be an actor? But I think there was something—you know, call it female intuition or whatever. She [my mum] just believed, even before I did. I just saw a glimpse of something that made me believe this is what I wanted to do, but it wasn’t hard-formed. There was no core to it. There was no master plan. There was no road map. It was just a simple conviction. But she believed before I did. And I think that is what makes mothers as unique as they are.

“She started supporting. It became unbearable to stay at home. So much so that one day, my dad woke up and said, ‘Listen, there can’t be two captains on this ship. You either go get this master’s going as quickly as possible. Take one year, go do whatever nonsense you want to do, come back, and then we set the course again. Or you leave my house.’ So I left.

“What she [my mum] instilled in me all through that time of staying with her, learning from her, directing me, guiding me—I think that’s what pretty much shaped the man I became, how I pursued my goals, and what I eventually became today.”

  • Aisha Huang weeps in court

    Aisha Huang weeps in court

Chinese national, Aisha Huang, widely known as the “Galamsey Queen,” wept in court during cross-examination by the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP), Yvonne Atakora Obuobisa, at an Accra High Court on Tuesday, July 19, 2023.

The trial of Aisha Huang, a Chinese national, has been a focal point in Ghana’s fight against illegal mining, commonly referred to as “galamsey.” Her arrest and subsequent court proceedings had drawn intense media attention, sparking discussions about the impact of illegal mining on the environment and the country’s natural resources.

According to a DailyGuide report, the DPP probed the accused about a statement she had given to immigration authorities following the arrest of four Chinese nationals—Qi Jin, Gao Jin Cheng, Habin Gao, and Zhang Zhipeng—at Bepotenten in the Ashanti Region.

Aisha Huang claimed that these individuals were in Ghana to repair her broken excavators, but the prosecution pointed to similar statements where she had allegedly admitted inviting them to work for her.

Though Aisha acknowledged her signature on those statements, she vehemently denied their content and broke down in tears while stating that she had not made such statements during the investigation.

In response to Aisha’s emotional display, Justice Lydia Osei Marfo intervened and expressed her disapproval of witnesses crying in court.

Aisha quickly composed herself upon the judge’s admonishment.

Insisting that she had no knowledge of the statement’s content, Aisha asserted that she had only signed them under duress, fearing she wouldn’t be allowed to leave the police station if she refused.

However, the DPP refuted this claim, pointing out that the individuals mentioned in the statement were not known to the immigration officers at the time of Aisha’s statement in August 2016, implying that she must have provided their names herself.

The DPP further countered Aisha’s claim that she was not a suspect or under any restraint during the investigation, asserting that she had voluntarily given the statement as a free person.

The prosecution also presented evidence that Aisha’s company; Golden Asia Company Limited, possessed six excavators at an illegal mining site.

Although this was confirmed by a prosecution witness, Aisha vehemently denied it and questioned the credibility of the testimony.

During the cross-examination, Aisha also revealed that she operated under two identities; En Huang and Huang Ruixia, with two different dates of birth—November 7, 1987, and July 7, 1975. She justified this by explaining that her parents had given her both names and dates of birth, which she claimed was a common practice in China.

Additionally, she admitted to holding three different passports, each with different names, dates of birth, and places of birth. Aisha explained that one passport was canceled upon her repatriation from Ghana in 2018. When challenged about her dual identities, Aisha maintained that it was a cultural norm in China and suggested that the DPP verify this with the Chinese Embassy.

As the cross-examination proceeded, the DPP questioned the validity of Aisha’s claims and suggested that her possession of two passports might be related to her involvement in illegal activities.

The case was adjourned until July 24 for further cross-examination and the presentation of additional evidence.

  • Declare our seats vacant, we don’t care – Sam George tells govt amidst NDC MPs boycott

Declare our seats vacant, we don’t care – Sam George tells govt amidst NDC MPs boycott

Member of Parliament for Ningo Prampram, Sam George, has emphatically stated that the parliamentary minority remains steadfast in their commitment to boycott all parliamentary activities.

The MP explained that until Akufo-Addo and his government halt the persecution of the minority caucus, NDC MPs will continue to be absent on the days any of their members has to go to court.

Sam Nartey George speaking on Eyewitness News on Citi FM further added that, the NDC does not care about losing parliamentary seats as a result of their absence from the House.

“Akufo-Addo will go down in the history of this country as the worst president and most undemocratic person. And we must resist him at every turn if it means losing 137 seats in Parliament. They should declare the 137 seats vacant and let’s have a by-election. After all, that will bring a lot of development to our 137 constituencies because that is their stalking,” Sam George said.

“The 137 of us have decided and are definite in our minds. We are not going to the chamber any day they take our colleagues to court and persecute them,” he added.

It would be recalled that the minority in parliament agreed to snub parliamentary proceedings whenever an NDC MP went to court. This was in solidarity with Assin North MP, James Gyakye Quayson who is standing trial for forgery and perjury.

  • I take immense pride in my ability to nurture and produce successful artistes – Kaywa

I take immense pride in my ability to nurture and produce successful artistes – Kaywa

Kaywa, the CEO of Highly Spiritual Music, has shared his conflicting emotions regarding some of the artistes who have left his record label. While he acknowledges feeling disappointed by their departure, he also takes pride in the accomplishments they achieved during their time with the label.

During a recent interview on 3FM, Kaywa expressed his viewpoint on the issue and highlighted that despite the departures of some artistes, his primary focus remains on nurturing and producing successful musicians, rather than solely focusing on creating hit songs. He takes immense pride in his role as a mentor and producer for emerging talents in the music industry.

Kaywa stated, “I don’t feel disappointed… If I look at these guys, I am very, very proud of myself. My excitement lies in the fact that I have been able to produce hit artists, not just hit songs. When you mention their names, we’ve been behind them, and we’re very proud of that.”

Kaywa, the renowned Ghanaian sound engineer, further shared his belief that everyone has a unique role to play as a destiny helper. Despite not always receiving appreciation for his efforts, he remains content with his contributions to nurturing and supporting aspiring talents in the music industry. His focus on being a guiding force in their journey outweighs the need for recognition.

He expressed his belief that they were created to assist destinies in reaching their full potential, and if their contributions go unappreciated, he remains unfazed.

“I’m not someone who easily lets things go… We are created to be destiny helpers, so we help destinies become who they are, and if, for one reason or another, we’re not appreciated, we’re cool,” Kaywa remarked.

When asked about the possibility of re-signing artistes who have left his label, Kaywa firmly stated that it was not their style.

He explained that Highly Spiritual Music believes in providing platforms for fresh talent. While they maintain a healthy relationship with former artistes, their focus lies in channeling their energy towards nurturing and promoting new acts.

“Unfortunately, that is not our style… We believe that the platform is always for freshers. When you have enjoyed it for a while and you leave, when we bring you back, it looks like we don’t know what we are about. We’d rather invest our efforts in brand new acts, but we do maintain a healthy relationship with them,” Kaywa clarified.

A military woman has fallen victim to an alleged scam by a businessman who convinced her to pay an exorbitant sum of GHC 295,000 for services he purportedly promised to carry out on her behalf. However, it has come to light that the businessman never fulfilled these commitments, leaving the woman defrauded and distraught.

These actives include giving about GHC70,000 of the total amount to the Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, to make her [the military woman] a Municipal Chief Executive (MCE).

And also, he was given GHC70,000 to purchase two plots of land in Agyiriganor, in Accra.

This was contained in a Newspaper report by the Chronicle dated July 19, 2023.

According to the report, the Military woman whose name was given as Dorcas Owusuaa was allegedly lured by, Wisdom Kumordzi, 43, personnel to give him the said amount on January 16, 2023, at Burma Camp.

The suspect, Kumordzi, is said to have obtained a total of GHC295,000.00 from the military personnel.

He claimed that part of the funds would also be shared with several individuals, including the Inspector General of Police (IGP), heads of EOCO, CID, GRA, National Security, NIB, and the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, as well as his Secretary to release his locked-up funds at the Central Bank.

Kumordzi has been charged with 10 counts of defrauding by false pretenses, in an Accra High Court presided over by Judge Samuel Bright Acquah. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges and was remanded in police custody for two weeks.

Chief Inspector Daniel Danku, the prosecuting officer, in presenting the facts of the case to the court, indicated that the complainant reported the accused to the police on April 15, 2023.

The prosecutor to the court that between September 2022 and February 2023, Kumordzi had taken various sums of money totalling GH¢295,000.00 from Owusuaa, claiming that it was for purchasing a plot of land in Agyiriganor and to settle the aforementioned individuals to release his locked-up funds.

The amounts were handed over to the accused on various dates: November 15 and 18, 2022; December 2 and 5, 2022; and February 1 and 9, 2023.

In summary, the court was informed that the accused spent six months collecting these sums of money from the complainant under false pretences.

The Prosecutor told the court that the accused, after collecting the said money, started playing hide and seek with the complainant till she lured him to the Cantonments Police Station, where he was arrested.

Although the accused admitted to receiving the funds from the complainant, he claimed that it was part of a business transaction with his supposed wife.

Chief Inspector Danku added that the accused requested time from the police to repay the money to the complainant.

So far, Kumordzi has repaid GH¢110,000.00 to the police, which has been returned to the complainant upon request.

  • Health Expert warns of rising cases of emergency contraceptive abuse

Health Expert warns of rising cases of emergency contraceptive abuse

Public Relations Officer of the National Association of Registered Midwives Ghana, Rosetta Ntriwaah Boakye, has voiced concern over the escalating misuse of certain emergency contraceptives among women in recent times.

According to her, the birth control pills which are usually taken after unprotected sexual intercourse to prevent pregnancy are being taken more than they are supposed to by many women; likening it to how often people chew gum.

Speaking on UTV, she noted that the pills are medically structured to be taken only once annually by every sexually active woman and not more than that.

“When we say emergency, it means something that is unplanned and we can’t also say that we will stay in the life and not plan. It is medically arranged such that every woman can take one emergency contraceptive once every year but the women are abusing it like chewing gum,” she said.

The health expert further noted that unlike other family planning methods which can be used often, the emergency contraceptives are designed to shock the woman’s reproductive system when taken and hence will have dire effects if abused.

“They are not supposed to take it every time they are having sex; it is wrong to use it as a family planning method.

“The emergency contraceptives work differently from the family planning pills. They shock your system and so it is not healthy to always do that because it destroys your reproductive system.

“You don’t take these pills before sex, you take it after sex and sometimes it depends on how early you take it after the act, that’s why sometimes people get pregnant,” Rosetta added.

  • More troubles for David Adjaye as developer working with him on controversial Brixton tower withdraws

More troubles for David Adjaye as developer working with him on controversial Brixton tower withdraws

The architectural firm led by Ghanaian international architect David Adjaye, Adjaye Associates, has suffered a significant setback as the developer, Hondo Enterprises, reportedly pulled out of the 20-storey Hondo Tower project in Brixton.

Details contained on architectsjournal.co.uk said that the company’s contested plans for the office tower in Brixton were withdrawn by the developer just days before a key hearing on the scheme was due to take place.

“Lambeth Council narrowly approved the 20-storey Hondo Tower scheme in November 2020 but it was subsequently called in by London mayor Sadiq Khan in a reversal of an earlier decision not to intervene,” the report said.

David Adjaye was the architect behind the project

This is another major blow to David Adjaye since some three women accused him of sexual misconduct in a series of allegations ranging from sexual assault to harassment.

The report also stated that the Hondo Tower scheme was set to go before the GLA later this week, but following the withdrawal, which was indicated in a letter, the hearing has now been cancelled.

It added that the details of the withdrawal said that the developer had decided to to pull the scheme and ‘reconsider its position.’

“Unfortunately, the very long gestation period over the past two years has had a profound impact on the ability to deliver this much-needed jobs and skills boost in Brixton […],” portions of the letter to the GLA, from planning agent DP9, is reported to have stated.

The application for the site at 20-24 Pope’s Road was drawn up for client Hondo Enterprises, which is owned by Texan entrepreneur and DJ Taylor McWilliams.

Objecting to the proposals, Historic England (HE) inspector Alex Bowring said the 96m-tall tower would be ‘significantly larger than anything in the vicinity’ and cause ‘far-reaching harm’ to local heritage.

  • Victim of Boti narcotics operation shooting opens up about being shot 4 times by police

Victim of Boti narcotics operation shooting opens up about being shot 4 times by police

A 46-year-old resident of Boti in the Yilo Krobo Municipality, Eastern Region, is recovering from four injuries, including a bone dislocation, resulting from a chaotic police operation that occurred in the community.

Anthony Soda, a farmer married with five children, was on the 20th of June, 2023, shot four times – in the buttocks, in his abdomen, and twice in the right leg, while confronting four men later identified as officers from the Police Intelligence Department (PID) of the Regional Police Command in Koforidua who had embarked on a special anti-narcotics operation to Boti to arrest a suspected female weed dealer.

The undercover security personnel after presenting themselves as interested buyers of the banned substance to the woman known only as Korkor later agreed to meet with her at her supply point at Boti.

The officers in an attempt to conceal their identities and portray themselves as narcotics peddlers were said to have dressed in mufti and wore earrings as they stormed the community.

During the course of the arrests however, the victim who was at home narrated that sometime around 10 am, he was attracted to the scene of the incident by shouts from some residents that armed robbers had invaded the community.

Upon arrival, he saw four men, two armed with guns, forcing the suspect in question into a taxi cab while some women and children shouted “armed robbers.”

“I was asleep and heard shouts of ‘armed robbers’ from some eyewitnesses, when I got there, a poultry farmer (woman) was being forced into a taxi as she fiercely resisted. I enquired from them what the matter was but they pushed me away, some of them spotted rasta, others corn roll, they wore earrings. I went a second time and I was pushed again,” narrated Mr. Soda.

Infuriated by this, he furthered that he reached out to deflate the tyres of the taxi in order to immobilize it to prevent the ‘robbery gang’ from executing their mission of abducting the woman. He continued that this prompted one of the armed men to shoot him in the buttocks. He was subsequently shot three more times as he resisted.

The farmer recounted: “I bent to deflate the tyres to prevent them from escaping. Immediately, I was shot in the buttocks, I grabbed a stick to hit his hand and he shot my leg, then he shot same leg again, I fell and he shot me in the abdomen.”

This enabled the men to eventually drive away with the suspect.

Some young men in the community took him to a health facility at Klo-Agogo on a motorbike for medical attention but they were subsequently referred to the Eastern Regional Hospital in Koforidua, adding that some police officers in a pick-up met them on their way and transported him to the hospital in their vehicle.

According to him, an operation was subsequently performed on him where he spent eight days at the facility.

Asked if the men identified themselves in any way as security operatives, Mr. Soda answered in the negative saying, “Even if she was handcuffed, that would’ve convinced me that they were from the police service, they didn’t identify themselves in any way.”

After paying some GH₵ 3,800 in medical bills at the hospital, he added that he has paid a further GH₵1,500 to a herbal practitioner to treat the dislocation he suffered due to the shots.

This he disclosed was at variance with the hospital’s directive to him to seek expert attention at St. Joseph’s Hospital, also in Koforidua.

According to him, though some personnel of the police service came to the hospital where his statement was taken, nothing has since been done to settle his medical expenses.

Asked if he would seek compensation from the police service for the harm suffered and expenses incurred, he replied that he was yet to hold a discussion with family heads on their next line of action.

    Attempted lynching of police

The appearance of the undercover security operatives and the subsequent shooting of the victim convinced the rest of the community that indeed these were armed robbers and kidnappers who had attacked their community.

The enraged youth subsequently alerted friends in neighbouring Nkurakan who mounted a roadblock in the community in wait for the alleged robbers with the youth of Boti also mounting a hot chase after them.

The officers were subsequently accosted by the youth at Nkurakan, forcing them to seek refuge at the Nkurakan police station along with the suspect.

The youth subsequently massed up at the police station, demanding that the officers, whom they still insisted were armed robbers and kidnappers, be released to them to enable them mete out instant justice to them.

However, the timely intervention of a reinforcement team of police personnel drawn from the Counter Terrorism Directorate (CTD) of the Ghana Police Service from Koforidua responded to the chaos where it eventually managed to whisk their colleagues to safety and restore order after firing several rounds of warning shots with the youth responding by throwing stones at them.

Teacher Kwadwo is ready to return to classroom

Amidst a controversial teaching career, Teacher Kwadwo, a well-known teacher and comedian, is once again making headlines.

He has recently stated his intention to cut his unique short dreadlocks and return to the classroom once his dispute with the Ghana Education Service (GES), which resulted in his termination, is resolved.

Despite his willingness to cut his distinctive short dreadlocks and return to teaching, Teacher Kwadwo remains firm in his decision not to apologize to the Ghana Education Service (GES) for the dispute that led to his termination.

In a recent interview on Angel FM, Teacher Kwadwo stated, “Whether I have stopped teaching or not, I can’t tell right now, and also with the dreadlocks I have on my head, I can trim them and move on, so it’s not a big problem.”

Addressing the topic of apologizing to the GES, Teacher Kwadwo firmly expressed he was never going to do so because he did nothing wrong and only the guilty apologise.

“When you have done nothing wrong, you don’t need to apologize. But when I apologize, it means I am at fault and wrong in many ways, but I am not at fault,” he added.

It is crucial to note that Teacher Kwadwo’s teaching career in 2021 faced significant challenges as he was terminated by the Ghana Education Service due to allegations of insubordination and failure to fulfil professional responsibilities.

The GES accused him of refusing to prepare lesson plans, disregarding directives from superiors, and exhibiting a high level of insubordination.

However, Teacher Kwadwo countered these claims, asserting that he was being targeted for criticizing the GES and launched the #FixGES campaign to draw attention to issues within the education system.

He passionately advocated for positive change and highlighted the importance of addressing the shortcomings within the education sector.

Moreover, Teacher Kwadwo emphasized his personal investments in improving his school, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to providing quality education to his students.

These investments included resources and initiatives aimed at enhancing the learning experience and creating a conducive environment for academic growth.

In response to his dismissal, Teacher Kwadwo expressed his intention to take legal action, emphasizing that he had received permission for any missed class periods.

This decision reflects his determination to fight for what he believes is right and to seek justice in the face of what he perceives as an unjust termination.

Drobo residents ‘cry’ over bad roads

Calls from Drobo residents in the Bono Region’s Jaman South Municipality have grown louder, as they implore the government to urgently tackle the dismal state of roads within their community.

According to the residents, the main Berekum-Drobo -Sampa road is riddled with overly visible potholes posing a significant danger and other accompanying cascade of challenges to road users.

They also cited linking roads like Drobo-Nyamefie, Drobo-Kwasibuokrom-Kwameseikrom, and Kwasibuokrom-Japekrom as roads that need immediate attention from the government because of their impact on daily travels, movement of goods and services and on agriculture, a major livelihood source of the many people in the municipality.

They lamented that the situation becomes serious during the rainy season, as these roads become treacherously muddy, virtually impassable and severely impeding transportation.

Bemoaning over their predicament, the residents averred that the situation clearly demonstrates neglect and a lack of commitment and want the government to swiftly prioritize the gravity of the situation and address the poor road network in the area.

“The roads in Drobo have fallen into a state of disrepair, exhibiting signs of neglect. There are potholes spread over the road which makes it difficult for us to conveniently ply the roads. The roads to other areas are also bumpy and uneven which poses a constant challenge to drivers and pedestrians alike so I think the government should come and help us,” Kofi Ferkah, a tricycle driver disclosed.

A taxi driver, Oppong Enoch lamented that drivers have to go for regular maintenance of their vehicles due to the terrible nature of the road network.

He added that if the roads are not fixed, most drivers will be out of business soon because of the high cost of maintenance.”

“Driving on the main stretch and other linking roads is a major headache for drivers because we have to regularly go for maintenance for our cars to be in good shape in other to stay in business because the roads are terrible but I am afraid if nothing is done about the road, some of us will be out of business.”

Madam Patience Obour, a trader at the Drobo main market appealed to the government to give the people in the area their fair share of road infrastructure to boost economic activities in the area.

“We are also Ghanaians so we are appealing to the government to extend the good roads being constructed in other places so we can go about our activities without the current stress we are going through”.

Taylor Swift achieves historic milestone with the most No. 1 albums for a female artist

Taylor Swift, the American singer-songwriter, continues to shatter records and make history.

According to Billboard, the superstar pop singer has now surpassed the record for the most No. 1 albums by a female artist.

By notching her 12th No. 1 with “Speak Now (Taylor’s Version),” Swift has surpassed the former record holder Barbra Streisand, who had 11.

And that’s not the only history Swift is making.

She is now also the first living artist in almost 60 years with four concurrent albums in the top 10, while also becoming the first woman and living soloist to have 11 albums concurrently charting on the Billboard 200 chart.

And while she sings “Lord, what will become of me / Once I’ve lost my novelty?” in the song “Nothing New” (Taylor’s version featuring Phoebe Bridgers), it doesn’t appear that needs to be a concern for Swift.

  • Ken Agyapong is attacking Bawumia out of desperation – Adomako Baafi

Ken Agyapong is attacking Bawumia out of desperation – Adomako Baafi

Former Director of Communication of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Yaw Adomako Baafi, Adomako Baafi, has weighed in on recent attacks on Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia launched by the Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong

Mr Adomoako Baafi believes the attacks by Mr Agyapong are being launched out of desperation.

“If you’re competing with someone and he becomes desperate, you can easily detect from their speech,” he said.

The astute politician was responding to a question posed by a presenter on Rajab media when he made the claims.

The presenter has referred him to recent comments by the Assin Central MP, suggesting that the Vice President who is the second in command of the current administration has been touting himself as a strategist, yet, Ghana has been dragged to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for a bailout under the leadership of the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia-led government.

“They go about claiming to be strategists; strategist is what has brought us here today. Ghana is the only place that those who send the country to the IMF claim to be strategists.

“For someone who claims to be a strategist, the dollar was GHC4 equivalent when we took power today the dollar is GHC12. You think you are a strategist? Excuse me, strategist! Please,” he said.

In response to these claims, Mr Baafi who described the Vice President as a “unifier” said Dr Bawumia’s team is unperturbed by such comments and would not respond to them.

“Bawumia has never insulted anybody. He is someone who loves people,” he said.

He further expressed strong optimism and the hope that Mr Agyapong will soon join Dr Bawumia’s team.

“ Bawumia is a unifier. So, if he has been able to add people like Kofi John, Opare Ansah and the likes to his campaign, it would not be difficult for him to at the end of the day add Ken,” he said in Twi.

The former NPP communications boss added that there is no need for Bawumia’s team to reply to the attacks coming from Ken Agyapong’s team because the vice president is going to win the flagbearership race.

Ten people would be contesting in the NPP presidential primaries which is slated for August and November 2023.

A super delegate conference would be held in August 2023 to reduce the number of contenders to five while the primaries proper would be held in November 2023 to choose the party’s presidential candidate for the 2024 elections.

The ten candidates include Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia; a former Trade Minister, Alan Kyerematen; Kwadwo Poku, an energy expert; Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Joe Ghartey; a former Minister of Food and Agriculture, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto; a former General Secretary of the NPP, Kwabena Agyei Agyepong; MP for Assin Central, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong; a former MP for Offinso North, Dr. Kofi Konadu Apraku; and a former Energy Minister, Boakye Agyarko.
