Ho Youth demand probe into murder of young teacher, rallying for #JusticeForFrancis

Volta Region’s capital, Ho, is currently experiencing a wave of sorrow and an overwhelming call for justice as a significant number of youth have come together to demand answers regarding the alleged murder of Francis Senyo Doheame.

The community’s collective anguish and determination to seek justice have captured the attention and stirred emotions among residents, as they seek clarity and accountability in this tragic incident.

The young man, who reportedly went missing on June 21, 2023, was found lifeless in a secluded area of Saviefe Agorkpo, in the Ho West District of the Volta Region, however, eyewitnesses have cast doubt on the official suicide narrative, claiming that the scene was staged to hide evidence of foul play.

According to those present at the scene, Francis Senyo Doheame’s lifeless body was discovered on June 24, 2023, in a kneeling position, with a yellow nylon rope tightly wound around his neck and tied to a tree.

They alleged that there was a visible wound on his left calf, which was dripping blood. Francis, affectionately known as “Eperror,” was a dedicated teacher at the Saviefe Agorkpo E.P Primary School until his untimely demise.

The youth of Ho has taken to social media platforms, using the hashtag #Justice4Francis, to call for a thorough investigation into the mysterious death of their friend and relative. They firmly believe that Francis was murdered and that his body was placed in the remote bush to make the incident look like the case of suicide. The online posts have been accompanied by pictures of the deceased.

One Facebook user, Prince Yao Amevi, expressed his skepticism about the suicide theory, stating, “We strongly believe Senyo was murdered. We know you have solved more mysterious deaths than this, so our hopes in you are high, even though the officers who retrieved the body left behind crucial evidence, such as the yellow nylon rope and knife.” The community anxiously awaits closure and seeks justice for Francis Senyo Doheame.

“Shame and Sorry in advance unto whoever had a hand in your Death Bro. You can’t kill a lion like a puppy.

“As a citizen of Ho Dome and a member of the WUSU Clan, we won’t allow our mother to grief alone. Yes, hearts got broken but wait until we fight back.

“And till now, I didn’t see any Statement from Ghana Education Service Ghana National Association of Teachers -GNAT,” another added.

“We can’t believe you are gone just like that. We know you well if you want to leave us, not on that tragedy path which your murderer(s) want us to believe. You are too Good to die now and you can’t choose that painful exit.”

In response to the tragic incident, the Prime Youth Band, of which Francis was a member, has organized a procession and vigil in his honor.

Police launch investigation into alleged murder of 24-year-old okada rider

The Eastern Regional Police Command of the Ghana Police Service has initiated a comprehensive investigation into the tragic incident surrounding the purported murder of a 24-year-old motorcycle rider. The authorities are actively pursuing leads and gathering evidence to shed light on the circumstances surrounding this distressing event.

With a focus on uncovering the truth and delivering justice, the ongoing investigation highlights the commitment of the Ghana Police Service to ensuring the safety and security of its citizens.

The 24-year-old motorcycle rider’s untimely demise is believed to be the result of a tragic incident involving passengers he had picked up late at night in Kwarfokurom, a small town situated in the Ayensuano District of the Eastern Region.

The Motorcycle rider is alleged to have been murdered by pillion passengers he picked up at night at Kwarfokurom, a small town in the Ayensuano District of the Eastern Region.

According to sources, some residents in the area found his body in a pool of blood.

The deceased was an Okada rider after completing Senior High School to support his widowed mother and siblings.

The deceased mother, narrating the sad incident, said, “I received a call that Mensah (the deceased) has been killed. I did not believe it. I did not find any Motorcycle riders in the community. I was told they had all converged at the scene where my son was found. It took a while before I could get there. When we got there, we were told the case is now with the state.”

Unable to hold her tears, she wailed, “I have no one since their father died. I solely took care of them. Who will help me now? My son was not troublesome.”

The use of motorcycles, popularly known in Ghanaian parlance as Okada, for transport business is rampant in the Ayensuano district and three other linking districts due to the deplorable nature of some roads.

Your comments can affect your promotion – Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu tells Dormaahene

As an Appeals Court Judge who’s a potential candidate to the Supreme Court, comments like this might haunt and affect the chances, Majority leader Hon. Osei-Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu says in response to his Dormaahene’s discontinue Gyakye Quayson call.

Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and the MP for Suame Constituency, Hon. Osei-Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu has rejected calls from a section of Ghanaians to discontinue the criminal trial of embattled Assin North constituency MP-elect, James Gyakye Quayson.

The Dormaahene, Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyemang Badu II, has described as needless for the Attorney-General (A-G), Godfred Yeboah Dame, to continue the criminal trial of James Gyakye Quayson. He made this known at the Bono, Bono East, Ahafo and Western North regional version of the Professor John Evans Atta Mills Commemorative Lecture in Sunyani on Saturday, July 1, 2023.

Reacting to this appeal, the legislator who doubles as the Majority Leader in Parliament told Kwame Adinkrah on Kumasi-based Pure FM on Monday, July 3, 2023, that the calls by the chief and some Ghanaians lack legal grounds as Gyakye Quayson like any person in the country is subject to the Ghanaian laws.

He expressed that we should allow the laws of the country to run its course to exonerate or implicate the MP.

“The Dormaahene is a respected chief and a distinguished judge as such so his comments are not ordinary but I must say that I disagree with him on the call to drop Quayson’s case.

“We are talking about constitutional matters here. Is it the case of the chief that he would call for same to be discontinued if it was a murder charge or any other?

“Is the respected chief saying that if someone flouts the law, we should let it go? I disagree. I think he should come out to explain further.

“He is a judge, is it his position that should the case be before him, he would have rejected or made similar utterances?” he quizzed.

“It is right for us all to allow the law to run its due process and course. We can ask the question whether the State has a case or not but beyond that, we cannot abuse the process.

Hon. Osei Kyei-Mensah further noted that a continuous trial of Gyakye Quayson will not dwindle the image of the New Patriotic Party in the Assin North Constituency.

“I don’t agree that a continuous trial of the MP-elect for Assin North, Gyakye Quayson, will dwindle our image and chances in the constituency,” Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu stated on Pure FM.

    Background

James Gyakye Quayson is facing trial for perjury at the High Court in Accra.

He is facing charges of forgery and perjury in relation to certain alleged offences in the run up to the 2020 Assin North parliamentary election.

He has pleaded not guilty to five counts of forgery of passport or travel certificate, knowingly making a false statutory declaration, perjury and false declaration for office.

It is the case of the prosecution that Mr Quayson allegedly made a false statement to the Passport Office that he did not hold a passport to another country when he applied for a Ghanaian Passport.

In addition, the prosecution has accused Mr Quayson of making a false declaration to the Electoral Commission (EC) to the effect that he (Quayson) did not owe any allegiance to a foreign country when he filed to contest as candidate for the Assin North seat in 2020.

Check out what Kalybos did to receive backlash from netizens

Ghanaian actor Kalybos has received massive backlash from netizens after he posted a video on instagram.

In the video, actors like Kalybos, Nadia Buari, Zynell Zuh, Hailey Sumney, and others could be seen having fun and showcasing the behind-the-scenes of the movie they were filming in a video that was circulated. The video’s use of Sarkodie’s “Try Me,” which was directed at fellow actress Yvonne Nelson, as the background music.

The use of Sarkodie’s Try me song has sparked mixed reactions among users on social media, causing a division of opinions. While some individuals have voiced their disappointment and criticized the actors for their actions, others have taken a contrasting stance.

Below are some reactions from netizens

One user said, “Hmmm…I like the entire crew…but I don’t like the song though ????…despite the fact that Sarkodie is my Best Musician in Ghana,” expressing their disapproval of the song choice.

Another social media user added, “Oh, you people are using this disgraceful song? Or are you doing it because you are not in good terms with Yvonne, so you support Sarkodie. So shameful,” implying that the actors’ choice of song was motivated by a negative relationship with Yvonne Nelson.

A particularly disgruntled user expressed their disappointment in actors Kalybos and Nadia Buari, stating, “I thought they’re supposed to have each other’s backs noorrr hmmm. This shows that they all might have been envying, jealous, and hating on Yvonne for a long time on low key… playing this derogating disrespectful and insulting song by @sarkodie directed at Yvonne on their gatherings tells it all.

“Wow, I’m so disappointed in @kalybos1 and @iamnadiabuari, these two have been my all-time best and favorite, not even the Yvonne Nelson I am supporting in this case, and yet they do this ???????????? I never thought they could stoop this low, be this bitter and hateful too towards Yvonne Nelson like Sarkodie… As for the rest of the ladies, it’s obvious if they hate and envy Yvonne, the girl’s height and beauty alone helped her to play in almost all of Ghana’s top hit movies by playing major lead roles and not them, so somehow, they are jealous and angry with her. Still, it is not her fault if they should be angry with her for that… but Kalybos norr, what’s his beef with Yvonne Nelson too?

“Doing this to your colleague actors is absurd and wicked!!! These are some of the behaviors and attitudes in we Africans reasons why we are not progressing above the mediocre standards we feel so content with and complacent about.. sad reality..”

    Background

On the back of Yvonne’s claim that Sarkodie impregnated her in 2010 but had to abort the baby because the rapper did not like the idea of keeping the baby, Sarkodie replied with a track titled ‘Try Me.’

In the song, he addressed Yvonne’s accusations of pregnancy and denial, stating that it was her decision to undergo an abortion.

Sarkodie alleged that Yvonne was manipulating the situation, taking advantage of the fact that society tends to listen to women more than men.

Yvonne, on the other hand, took to Twitter to express her discontent with Sarkodie’s reply, engaging in a series of rants aimed at addressing the lyrics that hurt her the most.

As the controversy continues, the public eagerly awaits further developments in the Sarkodie-Yvonne scandal, hoping for a resolution that promotes understanding and healing for all parties involved.

  • Sarkodie’s Try Me removed from Apple Music and Spotify

Sarkodie’s Try Me removed from Apple Music and Spotify

Sarkodie’s controversial song ‘Try Me’, which was a response to Yvonne Nelson’s allegations in her memoir, has been removed from Apple Music and Spotify.

The song, which was released on June 28, 2023, sparked a lot of backlash from Ghanaians, who accused the rapper of ‘slut shaming’ the actress and disrespecting womanhood.

In her memoir, ‘I Am Not Yvonne Nelson’, the actress claimed that Sarkodie impregnated her in 2010 and denied responsibility. She also revealed how he took her to a clinic for an abortion and left her there to bleed.

Sarkodie, however, denied Yvonne’s claims and accused her of lying. He said it was her choice to abort the baby and that she was playing the victim card because the world listens to women more than men.

The song also called out Yvonne for being promiscuous and having multiple partners.

The song has since been taken down from Apple Music and Spotify, following complaints from some gender activists and online users.

One of them, Esther Tawiah, urged the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) to ban the song and make Sarkodie a scapegoat for denigrating womanhood.

She said the song’s lyrics belittled the abortion pains of Yvonne Nelson and showed no empathy for her situation.

She made these remarks on GHOne TV, where she was interviewed by Natalie Fort.

One twitter user @ShadrackAmonooC, who joined several users in discussing the latest development, alleged that the song was removed from the streaming platforms because the beat used was sampled without authorisation by the music producer MOG.

A claim that was reinforced by user @flexkgermain.

Many people have also expressed their displeasure with Sarkodie’s song on social media and called for an apology from him.

Yvonne Nelson has not yet responded to this new development concerning Sarkodie’s Try Me.

GNAT provides life jackets to tackle rising cases of teacher drownings in Volta Lake

The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has distributed 251 life jackets to educators stationed in various communities along the lake within the Oti Region.

This significant initiative aims to enhance the safety and well-being of teachers, equipping them with life-saving gear as they carry out their duties in proximity to the expansive body of water.

The initiative aims to enforce a vital safety precaution for teachers traveling to their schools across the lake on a daily basis.

General Secretary of GNAT, Thomas Musah, in an interview emphasized that the allocation of life jackets would benefit teachers in approximately 36 community basic schools in the Krachi East and West districts of the region.

He stated, “it is crucial for teachers to wear life jackets during their daily trips across the lake to ensure their safety.”

This effort follows a previous distribution of life jackets in 2022, during which members expressed concerns about inadequate supplies.

Mr. Thomas Musah highlighted a recent incident in May where a teacher tragically drowned on the lake when the boat he was traveling on capsized while returning from school on Agamkope Island.

Teacher Prosper K Addo shared his near-death experience during a six-hour journey on the Volta Lake to an island community in the Krachi West District, recounting, “At the time, I wasn’t wearing a life jacket, meaning I would have needlessly lost my life.”

Ransford Appiah, Assistant Headteacher of Kudorkope D/A Primary School, also emphasized the risks teachers face while commuting across the lake from Dambai to Kudorkope on weekdays to fulfill their duty of providing quality education to deserving children.

Many teachers across the country endure similar ordeals, with some losing their lives due to the lack of protective gear.

To address the safety concerns of teachers commuting to riverine communities, GNAT has procured 251 life jackets, which will be distributed in the Krachi East and West Districts. GNAT National President, Rev Isaac Owusu, expressed his concern over the challenges faced by teachers in underserved communities, urging the government to take decisive action.

General Secretary Thomas Musah was alarmed to discover that “approximately half of the island communities in the Krachi East District lack schools,” questioning the government’s commitment to providing equal access to education.

The distribution of life jackets will extend to other high-risk areas where teachers work, including parts of the Ashanti, Eastern, and Greater Accra Regions, aiming to protect teachers who cross water bodies like the Volta Lake daily to fulfill their teaching responsibilities.

  • Paul Adom Otchere tells Sarkodie to apologise to Yvonne

Paul Adom Otchere tells Sarkodie to apologise to Yvonne

Paul Adom Otchere, host of Metro TV’s Good Evening Ghana, to add his voice to the Yvonne Nelson and Sarkodie brouhaha. According to him, Sarkodie,’s response to Yvonne Nelson, was inappropriate.

In response to Yvonne Nelson’s memoir where she accused the rapper of impregnating her and refusing to take responsibility which led to having an abortion. Sarkodie released the diss track “try me.”

The book “I am not Yvonne Nelson” paints a grim picture of the actress’s experiences as a young woman navigating life faced with difficult choices. One was the decision to abort a pregnancy she carried for rapper Sarkodie.

In a response, Sarkodie described Yvonne as a ‘promiscuous woman made for the street’.

    Parts of the lyrics reads:

“you gotta tell the world every god damn nigga you f*ck*d

you can’t just play the victim and paint a picture like you were just looking for love from all the d*cks that you sucked”

His response received a lot of backlash from the public, describing some of his lyrics as “slut shaming”

Mr. Paul Adom Otchere in his opinion, said the best thing was for Sarkodie to apologize to the public and Yvonne

“For all what it’s worth, I think that Sarkodie owes Yvonne and the book readers a certain apology, it is true that Yvonne has brought out something she shouldn’t have, she is trying to play victim and take advantage of the story but it is a true story, so he should have apologised to the general public and say, I’m sorry I was too young because you don’t want young boys to think that it is okay to have unprotected sex and impregnate a woman and you both agree to abort.”

Additionally, he asserted that it is untrue that Sarkodie did not have a personal physician at the time of Yvonne’s abortion because he was doing okay as a musician.

“We cannot call Sarkodie poor in 2010, he wasn’t as big as he is today like the BET level but he was not bad”

As someone who invests so much in his public image, Mr. Adom Otchere thinks this is a PR fiasco for Sarkodie

“In terms of PR, his apology should have come first”

The residents say they are shaken by the lightning bolt they witnessed in the community and the fear instilled may linger for some time since they have not witnessed something like that in the community before.

According to them, they were left in a state of disbelief and anxiety after the lightning bolt descended from the darkened skies and unleashed its fury on a tree in the community.

A mother who was pounding fufu had the pestle taken from her and thrown some metres away with her child who playing around hit by the thunder strike, and only able to speak after almost thirty minutes.

Recounting the harrowing moments as the thunder strike hit the community, an opinion leader, Karim Mbangwah, described the incident as terrifying and surreal.

“I was with my children fetching water when the thunder came and I must admit that some of us had to hide for fear because we have never seen like that. Many people had to run for their lives and even though there was no casualty, the fear is still with us.”

Kofi Demo on his part added that he suspects the thunder strike might have some spiritual connotations because about a year ago it emerged that the tree that was hit is the meeting place for witches.

“What happened in the community cannot be said to be normal… for me, it is spiritual because over a year ago a fetish priest came to the community and revealed that the tree that was struck is the meeting place for witches in the community.”

He indicated that the said tree has started to wither so he is hopeful that such a strange occurrence will not happen in the community again.

“The tree has started to wither so if what the fetish priest said is true then we won’t witness such an incident in the community again”.

Bawumia urges respectful NPP Primaries devoid of insults

In the run-up to the NPP primaries, Vice President Bawumia has made a fervent appeal for a clean campaign, urging all party members to avoid resorting to insults to maintain party unity. Bawumia’s call comes as an effort to foster a positive and constructive atmosphere within the party and ensure a cohesive and harmonious approach towards the primaries.

As the race for the flagbearership of the party intensifies, ten individuals, including the Vice President, have submitted their candidacy for consideration. However, concerns have arisen as the campaigning gains momentum, with allegations surfacing that certain aspirants are engaging in a divisive and hate-filled campaign.

Addressing party delegates on the final day of his Greater Accra tour, Dr. Bawumia said, as one family, it is important for all camps to understand that the party would need a united front to face the “main enemy”, which is the NDC.

“We all should understand that the campaign we are having now is for an internal election. The main enemy in 2024 is the NDC. As we embark on the campaign, let us not speak against each other,” Dr. Bawumia said.

“We want peace, we want a clean campaign and we want a clean election. We don’t want anyone to go out there and speak against an opponents. Because after our elections, we will need everyone on board to tackle the NDC.

In a clear demonstration of his commitment to a clean campaign, Dr. Bawumia said he has asked his campaign staff and well-wishers to be mindful of their utterances in order to ensure the unity of the party.

“So I have told all my supporters and spokespersons that we want a clean campaign and they should not go out there and insult anyone.”

“We are one family so let’s all stay together. When the contest is over, we will all come together as one family and make sure that the NDC doesn’t come back to power. That is very important. Let’s keep the NPP in power and we want unity in the NPP.”

Dr. Bawumia rounded off his campaign in the Greater Region over the weekend with a visit to the Obom Domeabra Constituency.

  • GMA mounts fresh pressure on govt to address brain-drain in health sector

GMA mounts fresh pressure on govt to address brain-drain in health sector

A key representative body of doctors in Ghana, the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) continues to lament the devastating impact of the increased migration of Ghanaian nurses to pursue employment opportunities in the healthcare sectors of other nations.

GMA is unhappy about the trend and has therefore asked the government to swiftly take action, which includes urgently absorbing the teeming unemployed nurses in the country, to avert the trend.

Expressing displeasure over the situation, the Bono, Bono East and Ahafo Regional Chairman of the GMA, Dr Alex Egotey, bemoaned the high numbers of trained nurses who still remain at home “having no job to do.”

He, however, said that these health workers  play an essential role in health delivery in the country, stressing that “the doctor cannot go to work without the nurse,” thereby, calling for urgent measures to be taken to address the matter.

He further said it was unfortunate and disheartening that many nurses had been in the house since 2019 without jobs, and appealed to the government to employ them.

“I do not blame the nurses who are traveling abroad because they also need to make a living. They must also do something to earn a decent living, so if there is an opportunity, they must go”, he said.

Data from the Ghana Registered Nurses’ and Midwives’ Association (GRNMA) says nearly 4,000 nurses left the country and emigrated to the West in 2022. It pegs the current emigration rate at about 500 every month.

The UK, Ireland, Australia, and Canada have become hotspots for the wave of Ghanaian health workers emigrating daily.

These countries are calling and Ghanaian nurses are answering loudly and leaving the shores of their motherland to seek better working conditions, flexible work schedules and better pay, leaving behind Ghana’s ailing health sector.

There still remains a huge number of communities that urgently need the services of these skilled workers, therefore, the situation is a huge threat to the country’s health sector.

Suggesting a solution to this, Dr Alex Egotey said: “In fact, these thousands of nurses cannot continue to stay in the home and overburden their parents. They also need to develop themselves and have a decent living. So, if we want the nurses to stay, then the government must give them jobs and improve the conditions of service as well.”

2 in police grips over chieftaincy dispute at Lugni

Suspects in a chieftaincy dispute which threw the Lugni community in the Northern region into a state of fear and panic have been arrested. This is according to reports from the Ghana Police Service.

According to the police, two people have been arrested in connection with the incident.

Speaking on how they were arrested, the police said a patrol team in town saw the suspects who have been identified as Kofi Binyam and one Mensah, a plumber in the area, wielding guns. This prompted the police to arrest and detain them.

On Thursday, inhabitants of Lugni in the Nanumba South District of the Northern Region had to evacuate to ensure their well-being due to a conflict over chieftaincy, which led to numerous gunfire sounds.

The discord, according to reports, originated when the acting regent of Lugni offered kola nuts to a Konkomba leader, enabling him to be officially appointed as the chief of the Konkombas in Lugni. Nonetheless, another Konkomba clan expressed their objection to this selection.

The Binyam and Naamuhi clans are at odds with one another. While getting ready to install a new chief, the other clan got offended and is said to have started shooting. The Binyam clan is said to have assaulted the Naamuhi clan.

The Binyam clan objected to the Nanung chief of Lugni enskinning the Naamuhi clan as the Konkomba chief for Lugni, and this sparked the shooting incident on Thursday night. Calm, however, has been restored now.

This adds to the number of chieftaincy disputes recorded in the Northern Region. A recent similar incident occurred in May this year at Yong Dakpeme Yile in the Northern Region between two rival groups in the area.

The clash was between supporters of Fuseini Chemsi and Mohammed Chemsi over the handing over of a staff of authority ceremony.

Although measures including mediation have been employed to curb these conflicts, they still persist, especially in the Northern parts of the country.

NPP flagbearer elections: Bawumia, Alan, one other face vetting panel today

Ahead of the highly anticipated primaries of the New Patriotic Party, a comprehensive vetting roster has been unveiled by the party to assess and evaluate the candidates vying for various positions.

According to a statement issued by Secretary to the National Presidential Vetting Committee, Evans Nimako, the vetting will take place from today, July 3, 2023, to July 6, 2023.

The first batch of candidates to face the panel today includes Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former Trade and Industry Minister Alan K Kyerematen, and Energy Expert Kwadwo Poku.

Dr. Bawumia is making his first attempt to vie for the NPP flagbearer position, after serving as the running mate and Vice President under President Nana Akufo-Addo for two terms.

Mr. Kyerematen, popularly known as Alan Cash, has attempted to vie for the NPP flagbearer position twice in the past. The first time was in 2007, during the party’s primary elections for the 2008 general elections. The second attempt was in 2014, when he contested for the NPP flagbearer position ahead of the 2016 general elections. This becomes his third attempt to vie for the position.

Mr. Poku is a newcomer to the NPP flagbearer race, having declared his intention to contest earlier this year.

The second day of the vetting will see three more aspirants appearing before the committee. They are former Energy Minister Boakye Kyeremateng Agyarko, former NPP General Secretary Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, and Assin Central MP Kennedy Ohene Agyapong.

The remaining aspirants will undergo the vetting on July 5 and 6. They are former Food and Agriculture Minister Owusu Afriyie Akoto, former MP for Asante Mampong Edward Addai-Nimo, Economist Kofi Konadu Apraku, and former Railways Minister Joe Ghartey.

The vetting process is part of the NPP’s preparations for its presidential primary, which will determine the party’s flagbearer for the 2024 general election.

The party has appealed to all presidential aspirants to respect the timetable and participate actively in the vetting process, which is crucial for assessing their visions, policies, and plans for the country.

As of now, 10 candidates have successfully filed their nominations for the flagbearer race. However, only five candidates will make it to the final round of the vetting process.

During the vetting process, aspirants are provided with an opportunity to showcase their visions, policies, and developmental plans for the country to the National Presidential Vetting Committee of the NPP.

The presidential primaries, according to the party, will take place on November 4, 2023.

Sarkodie mistook your pain for an attack on his image and integrity -Counsellor to Yvonne

Relationship Counselor and Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) Practitioner, Frank Edem Adofoli has advised Yvonne Nelson, urging her not to pay heed to rapper Sarkodie’s response regarding the revelations shared in her book.

Adofoli emphasized that Sarkodie perceived her pain as an attack, resulting in his strong and critical reply.

Counsellor Adofoli advised Ms Nelson to not allow anyone to make her feel bad for writing her memoir and pouring out her heart.

“Thanks for letting us know that making mistakes is better than faking perfections. Your book did not only reveal your life and your story but also the things we hide as a society. Don’t let anyone make you feel bad or guilty for telling your story. You don’t need to explain yourself because many people only understand you from their level of perception.

He encouraged her to let go of the song sung by Sarkodie for the sake of her own peace of mind. There is no need for her to seek validation from him or prove anything to him. It’s important to recognize that he misunderstood her pain as an attack on his own reputation and character. The song he sang was fueled by anger, so it’s crucial for Yvonne not to take its lyrics to heart. The author emphasizes the necessity of stopping the act of listening to the song.

Mr Adofoli added that both Yvonne Nelson and Sarkodie are good people who made mistakes in the past and must not allow that to embitter them. He called on Ms Nelson to seek counselling to assuage her pain.

“You two are good people who made some mistakes in the past, let the lessons learnt make you a better person and not a bitter one. You need counselling or therapy. Pain can shut you down, make you overthink and lose trust.

In conclusion “Better a patient person than a warrior, one with self-control than one who takes a city” – Proverbs 16:32 (NIV),” he concluded.

Ms Nelson had, in her book, I Am Not Yvonne Nelson, revealed that she got pregnant in 2010 for Sarkodie but had to abort due to Sarkodie’s lack of commitment to her keeping the pregnancy. Sarkodie hit back, accusing her of being promiscuous and choosing to abort it even when he said she could keep it.

I caught John Boadi giving bundle of cash to EC officer – NDC Communicator details

A member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) communication team, Courage Makafiji Nunekpeku, has unveiled the purported approach employed by the NDC to thwart the ruling New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) alleged attempts to manipulate the Assin North by-election.

In the revelation made by Mr Makafiji Nunekpeku, the NDC strategically positioned teams at every polling station to closely observe the actions of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). Their primary focus was to monitor the NPP’s interactions with the officials from the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) and detect any potential instances of vote-buying schemes near the polling stations.

He said the NDC deployed teams at all the polling stations to monitor the activities of the NPP, particularly their engagements with officials of the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) and possible voting buying schemes close to the stations.

Makafiji Nunekpeku, who was the leader of the team at the polling station at Bramha DA Primary School, said that his team was able to stop the NPP from engaging in buying votes close to the polling station and also allegedly caught the former general secretary of the NPP, John Boadu, trying to induce officials of the EC.

“A team was put up to manage every polling station, and I was the leader of the team that was sent to Bramha DA Primary School. We got to the polling station at 5:00 am, and around 7:00 pm we saw people bringing in some huge ‘Ghana must-go’ bags, which were taken to a house nearby.

“We didn’t know what was in the bags, but later we were told they were full of money. We also realised that anytime someone came to the polling station, they were taken to that house before s/he comes to the polling station. So, we went there and told them that this can’t happen 50 metres close to where the voting was taking place. There was commotion there, and the police came to stop it.

“… some hours later, there was this long convoy of about 10 vehicles, led by John Boadu, the former secretary of the NPP… He (John Boadu) went to the presiding officer and gave them canned malt first, then he pulled out a bundle of money from his pocket and gave it to the guy. Immediately, John Boadu gave the money to him, I confronted him and told him he could not be doing that,” he narrated in Twi in an Accra FM interview on Friday, monitored by GhanaWeb.

He said that after confronting John Boadu, he (the former NPP general secretary) told him that the EC official was his in-law whom he had not seen for a long time and that was why he was giving him the money.

The NDC communicator added that as the confrontation was going on, another NPP woman came to tell him that his money was on the way coming, so he should stay calm, but he rebuked her.

He added that the confrontation led to the intervention of the police, who seized the money as evidence.

A video of the incident was played during the interview, and the police could be seen taking money, which is supposed to be the bribe, from an official of the EC.

Apple’s market cap closed above $3 trillion for the first time ever on Friday, as its shares climbed about 2.31% to a new high and passed the $190.73 price required to hit the milestone, according to CNBC’s most recent share count.

Apple was the first company to hit a $3 trillion market cap during intraday trading in January 2022, but it failed to make it to the market close at that level.

It shows investors remain bullish on the stock and Apple’s portfolio of products and services, despite the company’s warning in May that its current quarter revenue is expected to fall about 3%.

Apple CEO Tim Cook speaks during Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) at the Apple Park campus in Cupertino, California, on June 5, 2023.

Investors see the company as one of the bright spots during a year of turbulence in the sector, with tech giants committing to “do more with less” amid a “year of efficiency” and laying off thousands of employees.

“The Apple bears and skeptics continue to scratch their heads as many have called for Apple’s ‘broken growth story’ this year in a tougher backdrop to which we firmly believe the exact opposite has happened with Cupertino heading into a massive renaissance of growth over the next 12 to 18 months,” Dan Ives, a senior equity research analyst at Wedbush Securities, said in a note Friday.

Sarkodie and Yvonne still love each other – Mr Logic

Entertainment pundit Mr Logic has just dropped a bombshell, asserting that the sparks of love between Yvonne Nelson and Sarkodie are still ablaze.

According to him, the lingering pain expressed by both parties indicates an undying affection for one another.

Mr Logic passionately explained his theory, highlighting a crucial telltale sign of true love—the ability to feel the sting of hurt inflicted by your partner.

“She mentioned his name, Michael, with so much passion. That’s when I knew she was hurt. She still loves Sarkodie. I’m telling you the truth,” he declared during a spirited discussion on United Showbiz.

“When a woman loves you, you can tell by how she reacts to the things you do to her. Yvonne still loves Sarkodie and Sarkodie still has Yvonne in his heart. He also still loves her. They both expressed their feelings, their hurt, in their responses and it’s obvious,” he explained.

Furthermore, Mr Logic stressed that Sarkodie still harbors a soft spot for Yvonne.

“Did you catch the part where Sarkodie mentioned Yvonne wanted to meet him at her house, but he refused? It’s because he knows that if they meet alone, something will happen. Sarkodie can’t resist Yvonne,” Mr Logic revealed.

In response to Yvonne Nelson’s explosive revelations, Sarkodie unleashed his own musical counterpunch, a track titled ‘Try Me,’ which sent shockwaves across the online sphere.

Yvonne had shared intimate details about their relationship in 2010, including her pregnancy and subsequent abortion, where she experienced a harrowing ordeal alone at a health facility.

However, Sarkodie, in his defiant single ‘Try Me,’ offered his side of the story.

He adamantly asserted that Yvonne made the independent decision to terminate the pregnancy.

While acknowledging their past relationship, he accused Yvonne of playing the victim card and leveraging society’s inclination to side with women.

In response to Sarkodie’s lyrical blows, Yvonne Nelson took to Twitter, unleashing a passionate storm of rants.

She addressed the lyrics that cut her to the core, firing back with her own verbal artillery.

The drama between these two once lovers-turned-adversaries has set the internet ablaze, leaving fans and spectators alike captivated by their tangled tale of love, pain, and conflicting narratives. Will the ever resolve this issue, or is this the final point in their friendship? Only time will tell as the saga continues to unfold.

  • Headteacher charges Labour MP Jess Phillips with “racism and bullying”

Headteacher charges Labour MP Jess Phillips with “racism and bullying”

Due to allegations of “racist and bullying behaviour,” Labour front-runner Jess Phillips may be the subject of an investigation.

Bridget Phillipson, the education secretary, stated that she would investigate any allegations made against a Labour MP but did not think Phillips was racist.

The headteacher of the competitive Michaela community school in north-west London, Katharine Birbalsingh, who has been dubbed “Britain’s strictest headteacher,” said that Birmingham Yardley MP was attempting to “whip up a social media mob” against her.

She has informed the parliamentary standards commissioner about Phillips.

Education secretary, Bridget Phillipson, said any complaint against a Labour MP should be looked into, but that she did not believe Phillips was racist.

The headteacher, a former head of the Social Mobility Commission, wrote to Starmer, saying: ‘She [Phillips] inspired a vicious mob attack against me on Twitter on the evening of 24 May 2023, and called into question my school’s safeguarding policies in a deliberative attempt to challenge my competence as a headteacher.’

The teacher said it had happened after she inadvertently tweeted a picture of Tina Turner alongside her abusive former husband Ike Turner amid tributes to the late star.

Phillips then tweeted: ‘Hold the line!’ and added: ‘Stay with me! Domestic abuse is never ok and we will defeat those who prop up the status quo …’

None of her subsequent tweets referred to Birbalsingh’s race.

Birbalsingh wrote to Starmer: ‘Ms Phillips does not know me. She has never met me. She has never visited my school. The school is not in her constituency.

‘In her shadow ministerial role, she has not previously publicly accused any other school headteachers in this way.

‘My view is that Ms Phillips’ extreme and unprompted hostility towards me is motivated by my race. By this I do not mean that she hates all people of colour.

‘Her behaviour is a clear example of ‘unconscious bias’. I mean that she hates me, despite not knowing me, because she subscribes to the idea that Black and Asian individuals in public life owe a duty to voice opinions that match with a leftwing view of the world, or they are worthy of her contempt.’

Phillips is the shadow minister for domestic violence and safeguarding and a former party leadership contender.

Birbalsingh, who recently spoke at the National Conservatism conference in London, said she was a ‘floating voter’ and was not a member of the Conservative party.

However, she said her decision to attend the rightwing event helped explain Phillips’s approach to her.

Birbalsingh claimed the frontbencher had brought Labour into ‘disrepute’ and called on Starmer to take action.

‘I would like assurances that regardless of what views are held by any member of your shadow team or party, baseless and unfounded abuse will not be directed towards my school and me. This is entirely unacceptable,’ she told the Labour leader.

Asked about the matter on Sky’s Sophy Ridge on Sunday programme, Phillipson said: ‘My reaction to anyone who feels unhappy about the conduct of a Labour MP is that they should complain through our processes and then the matter can be looked into.

‘And as members of parliament, we’re also subject to a code of conduct … and there are processes in place for people who are unhappy with an MP’s behaviour, to report it in that way. I would suggest that to any individual that’s unhappy about the conduct of a member of parliament.’

Asked if she thought Phillips was racist, her colleague said: ‘No, I don’t. But I think it’s important that if people have concerns, if they’re unhappy about the conduct of a member of parliament, that can be investigated as part of that process.’

Explosions heard outside restaurants in Washington, DC, during attacks

A series of explosive strikes early this morning targeted several businesses in Washington, DC.

Between 4.30 and 4.45 in the morning, several devices, including a Molotov cocktail, were detonated outside of buildings all around the US capital.

The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) reported that they were looking for multiple suspects and a car that was allegedly utilised to leave each of the three scenes.

The police department claimed that in all three incidents, only commercial properties were targeted and that no attempt was made to damage the general population.

The first explosive was detonated beside an ATM at the Truist Bank at 4.30am, causing damage to the area.

The second was set off at the entrance of the Nike Store, barely a mile from the US Capitol building, at around 4.36am.

Finally, at around 4.45am, a Molotov cocktail was thrown at a Safeway supermarket, again causing damage.

None of the three premises that were targeted were open at the time of the attacks, and no injuries have been reported.

The MPD said it was offering a $10,000 reward for information that would lead to the arrest and conviction of the person or people responsible for the crimes.

That reward was doubled by a contribution from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, bringing the total amount to $20,000.

President Biden to meet King and Rishi on visit to UK

Later this month, US President Joe Biden will travel to the UK and meet with King Charles and Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.

It follows Mr. Sunak’s trip to Washington, D.C., last month for meetings with Mr. Biden.

He declined the chance to throw the opening pitch at a baseball game when he was in town as well.

When they first met, the President addressed Rishi as “Mr. President,” which was a little awkward.

The President is scheduled to travel to the United Kingdom, Lithuania, and Finland from July 9-13.

He will first travel to London, for engagements with the King and Rishi ‘to further strengthen the close relationship between our nations,’ White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said in a statement.

Buckingham Palace confirmed that the King will meet Mr Biden at Windsor Castle on July 10.Mr Biden made a brief trip to Northern Ireland earlier this year to mark the 25th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement, meeting the Prime Minister for brief talks in Belfast.

The White House said that after visiting the UK Mr Biden would ‘then travel to Vilnius, Lithuania from July 11- 12 to attend the 74th Nato Summit’.

‘On July 13, President Biden will visit Helsinki, Finland for a US-Nordic Leaders Summit.’

The apparently short trip by Mr Biden comes after the US and the UK announced a new partnership, the ‘Atlantic Declaration’, to bolster economic security.

Announced during Mr Sunak’s visit to the White House, it included commitments on easing trade barriers, closer defence industry ties and a data protection deal.

While both sides used that Washington visit to hail the strength of US-UK ties, Mr Biden has not been afraid of occasionally criticising London.

Mr Biden in May claimed that he visited the island of Ireland earlier this year to ensure the ‘Brits didn’t screw around’, amid ongoing US concern about the impact of Brexit on the peace process.

During that visit, the President told the Irish parliament that he believed the UK should be working more closely with the administration in Dublin to support Northern Ireland.

Mr Biden and First Lady Jill Biden travelled to London for the funeral of the late Queen last September.

The US President did not attend the King’s coronation, with his wife attending instead.

Mr Sunak will also be attending the Nato summit in Vilnius, which is seen as a crunch summit at which a compromise on Ukraine’s demand for membership of the alliance is expected to be hammered out.

Firefighter dies, after 150 people arrested as violence in France continues

France has lost a 24-year-old firefighter during a sixth night of unrest.

The firefighter passed away on Sunday night while responding to a multiple-vehicle fire in an underground parking garage in Saint-Denis, according to Interior Minister Gerard Darmanin.

The 24-year-old Corporal-Chief of the Paris Fire Brigade passed away after receiving very quick care from his coworkers, according to his statement, which was translated from French on Twitter.

“All my heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, fellow soldiers, and the BSPP (Paris Fire Brigade).”

The number of people arrested yesterday dropped dramatically after the grandmother of a teenager shot by a police officer called for peace.

There have been riots across France following the shooting of 17-year-old Nahel Merzouk on Tuesday morning.

45,000 police officers have been deployed across Paris and other major cities, with curfews in place and the subway system closing early.

The number of arrests on Sunday has been revised up, from 78 to 150 – which is still a huge decrease compared to the 719 arrests on Saturday and 1,300 on Friday.

Yesterday Nahel’s grandmother Nadia spoke to French news channel BFM and said: ‘I want it to stop everywhere.

‘The people who are destroying, I tell them stop! Let them not destroy the schools, the buses.’

Speaking of the devastating impact of the past week on her family, Nadia said she is ‘tired’, adding: ‘It’s over, my daughter no longer has a life.’

The huge number of officers were once again deployed following the attack on the home of L’Hay-les-Roses mayor Vincent Jeanbrun in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Mr Jeanbrun described the attack as an ‘assassination attempt’, adding that his wife and one of his two children were injured after a burning car was driven into his house.

Skirmishes erupted in the Mediterranean city of Marseille on Sunday, but appeared less intense than the night before, according to the interior ministry.

President Emmanuel Macron chaired a special security meeting yesterday as the protests continued for a sixth day.

An official at the meeting said Mr Macron plans to meet with the leaders of both houses of parliament today, followed by discussions with mayors in the 220 towns and cities affected by the protests.

He also wants to start a detailed, longer-term assessment of the reasons that led to the unrest – which exposed deep-seated discontent in low-income neighbourhoods.

Mr Macron delayed the start of the first state visit to Germany in 23 years due to the ongoing violence.

360,000 people evacuate as bridge in Japan collapses due to severe rain

Dramatic pictures depict how a bridge gave way in Japan after the nation was battered by severe rain.

Around 360,000 people in the Kyushu region, Japan’s third-largest island and its most southerly, were given evacuation orders.

The Japan Meteorological Agency issued a warning that tomorrow’s heavy rain and thunderstorms are likely to last through at least noon.

Additionally, the potential for flooding and landslides in the area was cautioned to the locals.

The town of Yamato recorded rainfall of 82 millimetres this morning, which is a July record for the area.

The Kaneuchi bridge, which is 120ft (37m) long, collapsed over the Mifune River along the National Route 445 in the town.

The disaster is thought to have caused no injuries.

As of 11am this morning, the areas issued with evacuation orders included the Fukuoka, Saga, Kumamoto, Oita and Miyazaki prefectures.

Rain has continued to fall heavily in Japan since Thursday.

It was in just September last year that more than eight million people were told to evacuate their homes in one of Japan’s deadliest typhoons recorded in its history.

The super typhoon Nanmadol killed four, injured more than 100 and left thousands without power.

Some areas of Kyushu were reported to have received more than 20 inches of rainfall during that time, which was a figure apparently not seen in the area for decades.

  • China surpasses its own record for most hot days in six-month period

China surpasses its own record for most hot days in six-month period

Authorities report that China has experienced the most hot days in a six-month period since records have been kept, as the nation prepares for yet another scorching summer that will shatter all previous records.

According to a statement released on Sunday by the National Climate Centre, China had an average of 4.1 days in the first half of this year with high temperatures over 35 degrees Celsius (95 degrees Fahrenheit). This is the highest number since 1961.

The number of days with high temperatures that weather stations across the nation recorded was used to compute the national average.

China has already experienced four regional heat waves so far this summer, which arrived earlier and have been more widespread and extreme than in previous years, according to the center.

Northern China, a heavily populated region with hundreds of millions of residents, has been particularly hard hit, with more heat waves expected in coming weeks.

So far this year, Shijiazhuang, the capital of Hebei province, has seen 17 high temperature days, followed by Beijing’s 14 days.

Across the country, 110 weather stations have seen record temperatures, the center said.

China’s first heat wave this year arrived on May 28, more than two weeks earlier than usual and affecting 15 provinces.

By the middle of June, more than 200 million people in northern China were suffering from maximum daily temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit).

And during the fourth – and strongest – heat wave that lasted from June 21 to 30, Beijing’s temperature soared above 41 degrees Celsius (105.8 degrees Fahrenheit), setting a new record for the capital’s hottest day in June.

The National Climate Center said that heat wave was the most extreme China has encountered over the past decade in June, a month when repeated heat waves are extremely rare, according to the center.

As the climate crisis intensifies, scientists say dangerous, record heat waves are set to become more frequent and more severe.

Zhou Bing, chief of climate service of the China Meteorological Administration, told the state-run Global Times that China has recently experienced a high frequency of extreme weather events associated with El Nino – a naturally occurring climate system marked by warmer-than-average sea surface temperatures in the Pacific Ocean near the equator.

“The development of El Nino will lead to an increase in rainfall in southern China in summer and a decrease in rainfall in northern China, with flooding in the south and drought in the north,” Zhou was quoted as saying.

As northern China suffered scorching heat, the country’s southwest was hit by territorial rains in the past week.

Four people died and and three went missing after landslides triggered by rainstorms and flash floods hit Wenchuan county, Sichuan province last Tuesday, state news agency Xinhua reported.

  • West must take into account risk political breakdown in Russia

West must take into account risk political breakdown in Russia

The prospect of a world without Russian President Vladimir Putin is tantalising, but it may also be riskier. This resulted in a huge increase in the stakes for the West in the Ukraine war.

The bloody history of revolutions and coups in Russia was brought to mind during a mutinous weekend in which mercenary head Yevgeny Prigozhin openly mocked the Kremlin before abandoning his march on Moscow. While this was going on, the White House and its friends abroad tried to figure out exactly what was going on, which highlighted how unstable a war could be that may change the course of modern history and the geography of Europe. In the end, a civil war that threatened to break out was stopped—at least temporarily.

The Kremlin strongman seemed to blink at a military confrontation with Prigozhin’s Wagner Group fighters – in an act that might preserve his grip on power. But Prigozhin’s defiance – and the retreat by Putin, who accused him of treason but then agreed to a deal to let him apparently escape to exile in Belarus hours later – punched the deepest holes in the Russian president’s authority in a generation in power. There’s now no doubt that the war Putin unleashed to wipe Ukraine off the map poses an existential threat to his political survival. The rest of the world must now deal with the implications.

“This is not a 24-hour blip. It’s like Prigozhin is the person who looked behind the screen at the Wizard of Oz and saw the great and terrible Oz was just this little frightened man,” former US ambassador to Ukraine John Herbst told CNN’s Christiane Amanpour. “Putin has been diminished for all time by this affair.”

Schisms in Moscow and between the government and Prigozhin’s Wagner Group – the only Russian fighting force that has enjoyed much recent battlefield success – might also now conjure an opening for Ukraine, which wants breakthroughs against Moscow’s already demoralized and poorly led troops in its new counteroffensive. This would be good news for the West, which has bankrolled and armed the country’s fight for its life. And there’s no doubt that NATO leaders would love to see Putin gone since there’s no sign he will end the war by pulling his troops out of Ukraine.

For a time, it appeared that a teetering autocrat, Russia’s military and rival militia chiefs might end up in a civil war for control of a nation with a vast nuclear arsenal. Such instability and internal strife in Russia would send geopolitical shockwaves across the globe.

The West truly doesn’t have a side in the internal strife that erupted this weekend. This was a showdown between Prigozhin – whose men are accused of brutal human rights abuses in Ukraine, Syria and Africa – and Putin, who has revived World War II-style horror in Europe, who flouted international law by invading a sovereign neighbor and who faces an arrest warrant for alleged war crimes. Prigozhin also has been no friend to the US – he has admitted to interfering in American elections and pledged to do so again.

Statements by Western leaders that this was an internal Russian matter reflected a desire to deny Putin a pretext to renew his claims that he’s a victim of a Western plot to overthrow him and suppress Russia’s dignity as a major power and to trim its geopolitical sphere of influence. CNN’s Kevin Liptak reported that in telephone conversations with the leaders of France, Britain and Germany, Biden stressed the need to keep the temperature low and to allow whatever was happening in Russia to play out in keeping with his mantra to prevent “World War III.”

And while it’s possible a crack in the Putin regime could presage an eventual collapse that might remove one of Washington’s major foreign policy challenges – a new Cold War-style standoff with Russia – no one in Washington is betting on it.

“I don’t think we want a country that spans 11 time zones and includes republics in the Russian Federation of many different ethnic and sectarian groupings to come apart at the seams,” retired Gen. David Petraeus said on CNN’s “State of the Union.”

“Is this the beginning of the end of Putin? We don’t know. Whoever follows him, if that is the case, will he be even more dictatorial, which is what we feared might be the case if Prigozhin may have been successful? Could there actually be a pragmatic leader who steps in and realizes what a catastrophic error this whole Ukraine endeavor has been and realize that they need to somehow get a more rational approach to Europe and to the West?” asked Petraeus, a former CIA director.

    “Many, many unknowns.”

It has long been clear that Ukrainian success in this war could pose a serious political threat to Putin’s rule. But it’s one thing to posit this in theory. After this weekend, this new reality will require the West to once again examine its balancing act to save Ukraine.

It’s possible that the Russian leader’s humiliation could cause him to demand an even more vicious push in a war that has already callously targeted Ukrainian civilians. If political strife in Russia further damages its troops’ morale and leads to battlefield losses, Putin’s position could become even more difficult. This will fuel fears that the Russian leader could threaten a catastrophic escalation of the war after months of nuclear saber rattling.

And if the weekend was a preview of a possible collapse of the Putin regime, if the war keeps going from terrible to worse for Russia, the West could have another headache.

The European Union’s foreign affairs chief Josep Borrell said Monday that it was “not a good thing” when a nuclear power like Russia faces political instability, saying the nuclear threat was “something that has to be taken into account.” The US has said that there has so far been no change in Moscow’s nuclear posture.

After months of heavy losses on the battlefield and economic pain at home caused by Western sanctions, it was noticeable that the most potent resistance to Putin came not from a democratic movement that he spent years crushing. It was from a force even more right-wing and brutal than him – Prigozhin. And another extreme and bloodthirsty war lord, Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov, offered on Saturday to help suppress the Wagner rebellion on Putin’s behalf, which is one reason why there were fears of a bloodbath on the streets of Moscow.

Behind-the-scenes machinations of Moscow’s politics – a bear pit populated by thuggish militia chiefs, intelligence chieftains and oligarchs – are impossible to predict. But the weekend’s wild twists highlight the possibility that whoever leads Russia after Putin may be even more ruthless and hard for the West to deal with as its longtime nemesis. One of Prigozhin’s pet projects, for instance, was the Internet Research Agency, a troll farm used by Russia to send a torrent of misinformation across social media in an effort to interfere in the 2016 presidential election.

“We’re all maybe excited to see that Putin’s hold on power is shakier and the state is more fragile than we thought, but we should also think as much about what would happen next,” said Robert English, an expert in Russia and eastern Europe who directs the School of International Relations at the University of Southern California.

“It probably will be somebody like a Prigozhin or another sort of military leader who pretends for power, not a liberal like an Alexei Navalny or these other liberal critics of Putin, but a populist from the right who appeals to the same anti-elite, anti-corrupt instincts but has brutal dictatorial tendencies of their own,” English said.

The assumption in Washington is that the hastily announced truce brokered by Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, which led to Prigozhin halting his advance on Moscow, is far from the end of the story. “It’s too soon to tell exactly where this is going to go,” Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on CNN’s “State of the Union” on Sunday. “I suspect that this is a moving picture.”

At the same time, there is a sense that Putin – whose rule has long relied on his ability to keep various factions below him placated – has seen his credibility as a leader seriously wounded.

Blinken said that the fact that a strong figure inside Russia had questioned Putin’s authority directly was “something very, very powerful.” He added: “It adds cracks, where those go, when they get there, too soon to say, but it clearly raises new questions that Putin has to deal with.”

The possibility that a weakened Putin could seek more extreme ways to turn around a war that is threatening his hold on power is likely to preoccupy the US and its allies. Biden has been adamant about the need to avoid the conflict spilling over into a direct Russia-NATO conflict. But the fact that the war is now causing deep splits inside Russia in a way that could affect the integrity of its operations may be an argument for quickly escalating western help to Ukraine.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said Monday that as Russia’s assault continues, it was “even more important” for the West to support Ukraine to allow it to retake more land and to strengthen its negotiating hand.

Putin’s apparent vulnerability is likely to embolden those who argue that Biden has been too timid, despite reviving the Western alliance to help Ukraine defend itself in the most sweeping transatlantic mobilization since the end of the Cold War and sending billions of dollars and advanced weapons. Critics complain that the West has given Ukraine enough to survive but not to expel Russian troops from all of its territory and even Crimea, which Putin illegally annexed in 2014.

Republican presidential candidate Will Hurd, a former CIA officer and Texas congressman, said Sunday that statements from the US and its allies that they were monitoring events in Russia sent a weak message to Putin. “There’s another word for that. That’s wringing your hands and doing nothing,” Hurd said. After intelligence reports suggesting potential action by Prigozhin, “we should have been planning with our allies, we should have been planning with the Ukrainians on how to take advantage of this opportunity,” Hurd said on ABC’s “This Week” on Sunday.

Hurd – one of the handful of candidates to anchor his campaign to directly attacking the GOP frontrunner, former President Donald Trump – has only recently jumped into the presidential race. But his comments reflect the reality that while Biden’s premier responsibility is the foreign policy implications of the war in Ukraine, he must begin to consider the conflict’s implications for his political prospects.

Any worsening of already dire US relations with Moscow – or incidents that bring US and Russian forces into conflict – are likely to play into the hands of Republicans, especially Trump, who is warning that Biden’s support for Ukraine could cause World War III.

Trump’s claims that he could end the conflict in 24 hours are fatuous, and any solution he does propose is likely to benefit Putin, whom he has long admired. But while the war in Ukraine already dominates Biden’s legacy, a Russian collapse that leads to global chaos is unlikely to help him politically as an election year approaches.

Father dies after falling more than 100 feet

On a walk with this family, an Oregon man died after sliding from a cliff at a well-liked natural recreation area, according to police authorities.

According to John Plock, a spokesman for the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office, the 40-year-old man apparently slipped or stumbled while hiking near Multnomah Falls, which is roughly 30 miles east of downtown Portland, with his wife and five children.

Plock estimates that the fall occurred on Saturday around half a mile up the trail.

“He slid down a steep hill and then fell off a cliff,” Plock said. “We estimate it was a 100 to 150-foot fall.”

After the father fell, his family and others were unable to see where he landed, Plock told CNN affiliate KATU.

The sheriff’s department and Corbett Fire District responded and searched for the man, finding his body about 45 minutes after the incident occurred, according to tweets from the agencies.

The family is from the Portland metro area, according to authorities.

Multnomah Falls has more than 2 million visitors annually and is the most-visited natural recreation site in the Pacific Northwest, according to the US Forest Service website.

In August 2022, a woman hiking with friends along the Multnomah Falls-Larch Mountain Trail died after a head injury from an approximately 100-foot fall, CNN previously reported.

  • Baltimore detectives hunt for possible offenders in mass shooting during block party

Baltimore detectives hunt for possible offenders in mass shooting during block party

Two people were killed and 28 others, the majority of whom were teenagers, were injured in a mass shooting that rocked a popular annual neighbourhood block party early on Sunday, according to officials in Baltimore.

Brooklyn, a neighbourhood in south Baltimore, was hosting its annual Brooklyn Day celebration when shooting broke out overnight, Mayor Brandon Scott told CNN.

The Baltimore Police Department reported that Kylis Fagbemi, 20, and Aaliyah Gonzales, 18, both died from gunshot wounds.

The dozens of surviving victims all sustained gunshot wounds, according to acting Police Commissioner Richard Worley. Five of those injured were adults aged 20 or olderand the remaining 23 were teenagers ranging in age from 13 to 19, police said.

Nine of the wounded remained in local hospitals in “various conditions” as of Sunday afternoon, Worley said.

Investigators are scouring thesprawling crime scene – which spans several blocks – for evidence and are pouring poring over hours of surveillance footage, the police commissioner said. Officials have also urged community members to come forward with any relevant information or video footage that may assist in the investigation.

At least two shooters were involved, though investigators are working to determine whether there may have been more people firing, Worley said.

Police began receiving calls reporting the shooting around 12:30 a.m. Sunday, according to Worley.

As officers arrived on the scene, they found an 18-year-old woman – later identified as Gonzales – dead, police said. A 20-year-old identified as Fagbemi was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Investigators have yet to determine a motive in the attack and are still figuring out whether the victims were targeted or indiscriminately shot at, the police commissioner said. As officers canvased the neighborhood during the day Sunday, K-9 units located additional shell casings that had not been found overnight, he said.

Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott said Sunday his office is mobilizing every available resource to assist with the investigation.

Scott shared a message for the shooters: “We will not stop until we find you – and we will find you.”

“Until then, I hope with every single breath that you take that you think about the lives that you took and you think about the lives that you impacted here tonight,” he added.

The attack marks one of the latest acts of gun violence to thrust an American community into grief as they gather in everyday spaces, including parks, schools, shopping malls and grocery stores.

“This was a reckless, cowardly act of violence that has taken two lives and altered many, many more,” Scott said. “This tragic incident is another glaring, unfortunate example of the deep issues of violence in Baltimore, in Maryland and this country and particularly gun violence and the access to illegal guns.”

The tragedy is among three mass shootings so far this month and adds to the tally of more than 330 mass shootings in the US in 2023, according to the Gun Violence Archive. The archive, like CNN, defines a mass shooting as one in which four or more people are shot, not including the shooter.

Officials lamented the joyful setting of the shooting, where a crowd had gathered for an annual celebration of the Brooklyn neighborhood.

“This indiscriminate, callous, reckless behavior by a few causes a tremendous amount of trauma to hundreds and particularly our vulnerable adults in this community and our children. They deserve better,” Baltimore City Council president Nick Mosby said at a Sunday news conference.

“These are events that are about celebration, about coming together, that are intergenerational and should be sacred to our communities,” Mosby added.

Scott, the mayor, described the Brooklyn neighborhood as a working-class community filled with “immense pride.”

“It is a neighborhood that has had its troubles, but a neighborhood that has seen some folks in that community really determined to see it be successful and see things turn around,” he added.

The mayor said his his office is distributing information about community-based services available to residents in the Brooklyn Homes area, which he described as a public housing facility.

Yvonne Booker, a resident of Brooklyn Homes, told CNN affiliate WBAL that she’s lived in the area for three decades and feels the gun violence has reached a breaking point.

“It’s kind of hard for me. I’m a mother. They need to stop. It’s too much. I’ve been to so many funerals in this community,” Booker said.

California woman who lied to police receives prison sentence

The Sonoma County District Attorney’s Office reports that a California mother was given a 90-day prison term for lying to law enforcement about a pair trying to kidnap her kids.

On one count of intentionally filing a false police complaint, Kathleen Sorensen, 31, received a jail term on Thursday. The conviction is the result of an incident that happened in December 2020 while Sorensen and her two kids were shopping at a Michaels craft store in Petaluma, California, which is located approximately 30 miles north of San Francisco.

After buying several items, Sorensen left with her two children and drove out of the parking lot, according to a news release from Sonoma County prosecutors. Several minutes later, Sorensen called the Petaluma Police Department to report a couple tried to kidnap her children.

Additionally, Sorensen recorded and posted a viral video on Instagram about the purported incident about a week later, according to the release.

In the video, Sorensen talked about the incident in “great detail” and added “significant details that had not been disclosed to the Petaluma Police Department,” the district attorney’s office said. Sorensen also went on a local news program and repeated her account of events.

In a follow-up interview with police, Sorensen identified a couple from the store video as the individuals who tried to kidnap her children, the release said. But police said her report proved to be false and “was resoundingly contradicted by the accused couple as well as store video that was obtained,” the district attorney’s office said.

CNN has reached out to Sorensen’s attorney for comment.

Days after the incident, Sadie Martinez identified herself and her husband as the couple accused of the alleged kidnapping, the Petaluma Argus-Courier reported at the time. Sadie Martinez, who is Latina, suspected the incident was racially motivated – Sorensen is White.

“I couldn’t believe it. It’s like we’re literally guilty of being brown while shopping,” she said, according to the Argus-Courier.

In April, after a jury convicted Sorensen of lying to authorities about a false kidnapping attempt, Martinez told Elle Magazine that she was “happy” with the outcome.

“After (Sorensen) avoided accountability for years, and then hearing she was found guilty and walked out in handcuffs… yes, justice was served,” she said. “I feel like it’s a step in the right direction for my family. I’m grateful for the support.”

The district attorney’s office said 60 days of Sorensen’s sentence could be served in a work release program.

“Ms. Sorensen has been held accountable for her crime and we believe the judge handed down a fair sentence. Our hope is that this measure of accountability will help provide some closure to the couple that was falsely accused of having attempted to kidnap two young children,” District Attorney Carla Rodriguez said in a statement.

Sorensen was “also placed on 12 months of informal probation during which time she was ordered to have no social media presence, submit to warrantless search and seizure, to include her electronic devices, complete a 4-hour implicit bias training, as well as various fines and fees,” the release said.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this stage and a joint investigation is being carried out by police and the fire service.

Detective Inspector Carl Price, from South Wales Police, said: ‘Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the child who has tragically died at a house fire in West Cross, Swansea.

‘Of the three others who were in the house at the time, one child and woman suffered smoke inhalation, and one man is in a serious condition in Morriston Hospital.

‘An investigation is being carried out to establish the exact circumstances of the fire. We wish to thank members of the community who helped at the scene and those who have come forward with information.’

Policeman who covertly recorded lady undressing imprisoned

An undercover policeman who discreetly recorded a woman changing before taking a shower on his iPad was sentenced to jail.

Kieran Ball, 30, a member of the British Transport Police (BTP) who was stationed in Coventry at the time, set up the contraption on a house’s bathroom windowsill.

On June 10th, 2021, the victim discovered the iPad while getting ready for the shower.

According to testimony given at Warwick Crown Court, it had been filming her for over six minutes, including when she started to undress.

She took a video of the iPad on her mobile phone and reported the incident to the authorities.

Warwickshire Police seized Ball’s mobile devices and the British Transport Police suspended him.

Ball never accepted any wrongdoing, insisting he was using the iPad to ‘pleasure himself’ as officers accused him of voyeurism.

In April earlier this year, a jury at Leamington Crown Court found him guilty of voyeurism and, following an accelerated misconduct hearing the following month, he was fired from the force.

Police bosses said Ball’s actions amounted to gross misconduct.

He was sentenced to 12 months behind bars on Friday and handed a restraining order banning him from contacting the victim or being within 100 metres of her home.

Ball will be on the Sex Offender’s Register for the next decade, a judge also ruled.

Deputy Chief Constable Alistair Sutherland: ‘Ball is a convicted sex offender who attempted to invade a woman’s privacy in a space she had every right to feel safe in – so it is absolutely right that he’s been punished for the abhorrent crime he committed.

‘He has clearly undermined the thousands of BTP officers who day in and day out work tirelessly to protect women and girls, and rightly hold themselves to the highest standards of integrity whether they are at work, at home, or anywhere else.’

DCC Sutherland stressed that the police did not seek disciplinary action against Ball after the incident came to light for fear of it ‘prejudicing the criminal proceedings’.

‘Achieving the right outcome for the victim was something we cared very strongly about,’ he said.

‘His actions are entirely inconsistent with our values,’ DCC Sunderland added, ‘and there is clearly no place in our force for individuals who behave like him.’

  • France had calmer night as Nahel M.’s grandma calls for an end to riots

France had calmer night as Nahel M.’s grandma calls for an end to riots

Following an appeal for peace from the grandmother of a teenager who was shot by a police officer, the number of persons arrested in France on Sunday sharply decreased.

After Nahel Merzouk, 17, was shot on Tuesday morning, there have been riots all throughout France.

There are curfews in effect, the underground system closes early, and there are 45,000 police officers stationed throughout Paris and other large cities.

It seems Nadia’s plea had the desired effect, as there were only 78 arrests across France on Sunday in relation to rioting – a huge decrease compared to the 719 arrests on Saturday and 1,300 on Friday.

Ferry employee recalls moment boy and mother fell overboard

A Stena Spirit ferry employee remembered what happened when a boy and his mother fell overboard.

The toddler fell into the water when the ship was sailing from the Swedish port of Karlskrona to the Polish port of Gdynia.

Tragically, both of them perished after his mother dove in after the boy to try to save him.

The ferry’s crew reportedly signalled for help and turned around to return to the area of their fall.

TVN24, a Polish outlet, spoke with a Stena Line Spirit worker

    who described the instant reaction.

The staff member told the broadcaster: ‘There was an alarm and a message. The engines were immediately shut down. After a while, the captain announced that there was a man overboard.

‘We heard that these are not exercises. The launching of the lifeboat has begun. The search lasted almost two hours.’

Stena Line are co-operating with police as part of the investigation into the tragedy.

Ships and helicopters from Sweden and from NATO units that were in the area assisted in the rescue operation.

Once found, the 36-year-old mother and boy were transported separately by helicopter to a hospital in Karlskrona.

Anders Olsson, who was on the rescue helicopter that pulled the woman from the sea, told Swedish radio on Friday that she was ‘not responsive’ and first aid was administered to her.

Police spokesperson Mariusz Ciarka told local media that it was impossible to save the lives of the two, both of whom were Polish citizens.

He said: ‘Unfortunately, in the morning we received information from the Swedish side that we have to pass on this terrible news to the family, because both the boy and the woman are dead.’

The boy fell from a height of about 20 meters – 65 feet – off the Stena Line ferry, it has been reported.

‘At the moment we have no information whether this was due to a malfunction of the ferry,’ Stena Line spokesperson Agnieszka Zembrzycka told TVN 24.

‘We are cooperating with the police and other authorities that are appointed to explain the causes and circumstances of this event.’

Swedish police issued an appeal to Polish passengers via Poland’s state-run news agency PAP asking for information that could explain how the accident occurred.

  • Californian convicted for importing mosaic Hercules from Syria

Californian convicted for importing mosaic Hercules from Syria

An ancient floor mosaic, estimated to have been created in modern-day Syria almost two thousand years ago and worth close to $500,000, was found to have been illegally imported by a California man.

According to a news release from the US Attorney’s Office, Mohamad Yassin Alcharihi, 56, was found guilty on one count of entry of fraudulently categorised goods on June 21.

Federal authorities claimed in the release that Alcharihi made a “false classification” regarding the enormous mosaic’s “value and quality.” The antiquated artefacts were sent from Turkey in August 2015 and arrived at the port in Long Beach.

The mosaic, thought to date back to the Byzantine era of the Roman empire, shows a mythological scene: Hercules rescuing Prometheus, who was chained to a rock by other gods for stealing fire.

Alcharihi only paid about $12,000 for the antiquity, which an appraisal expert valued at $450,000, according to the US Attorney’s Office. When he brought the artwork into the US, he lied and declared that he was importing ceramic tiles from Turkey with a value of less than $600, prosecutors said.

The mosaic weighs a whopping 2,000 pounds and is about 15-feet long and 8-feet tall, according to the release. The piece was hidden in a shipping container behind a pile of vases and then shipped via truck to Alcharihi’s home after passing through customs.

It has been stored at a Los Angeles facility since it was seized from Alcharihi’s garage in 2016. The US Attorney’s Office did not immediately return a request for comment about future plans for the artwork.

Alcharihi’s false declarations about the mosaic came just months after the United Nations Security Council passed a resolution condemning the destruction of cultural heritage in Syria. Since the Syrian civil war began in 2011, destruction by ISIS and opportunistic looting has led to the loss of large swaths of artwork and archaeological artifacts. In 2015, ISIS militants reportedly smashed six ancient statues, including one dating back to the second century.

Alcharihi is scheduled to be sentenced next month, according to the news release. He faces a maximum sentence of two years in federal prison.

  • CIA director reportedly met Zelensky on a trip – US official

CIA director reportedly met Zelensky on a trip – US official

As reported by US official, CIA Director William Burns recently visited Ukraine where he met with the president, Volodymyr Zelensky, and Ukrainian intelligence officers.

Since the start of Russia’s most current attack more than a year ago, director Burns has often visited Ukraine, the official told CNN. “Like on previous visits, the director met with his Ukrainian intelligence counterparts and President Zelensky, reiterating the US commitment to intelligence sharing to support Ukraine’s defence against Russian aggression.”

The official noted that Burns traveled to Kyiv before Wagner Group chief Yevgeny Prigozhin’s rebellion, which was not a topic of discussion.

Another official told CNN that Burns also spoke to his Russian counterpart, Sergey Naryshkin, after the rebellion and reiterated that the US had nothing to do with it. The Wall Street Journal first reported on the call.

The Washington Post first reported on Burns’ most recent trip to Ukraine.

“Disaffection with the war will continue to gnaw away at the Russian leadership, beneath the steady diet of state propaganda and practiced repression,” Burns said Saturday in remarks to the Ditchley Foundation in England, according to a transcript of his speech.

“That disaffection creates a once-in-a-generation opportunity for us at CIA, at our core a human intelligence service. We’re not letting it go to waste,” he said.

CNN previously reported that the CIA has launched a new effort to recruit Russian spies that includes a social media campaign to convince Russians disaffected by the war in Ukraine and life in Russia to share their secrets.

Burns also addressed the recent Wagner Group rebellion, saying that Prigozhin’s actions and speech prior to his group’s attempted march to Moscow illustrate how the war has undermined Russian leader Vladimir Putin’s power.

“It is striking that Prigozhin preceded his actions with a scathing indictment of the Kremlin’s mendacious rationale for its invasion of Ukraine, and of the Russian military leadership’s conduct of the war. The impact of those words and those actions will play out for some time, a vivid reminder of the corrosive effect of Putin’s war on his own society and his own regime,” Burns said.

The Post also reported that Burns had met earlier in June with Ukrainian officials, who revealed a strategy to retake Russian-occupied territory and open cease-fire negotiations with Moscow by the end of the year, according to officials familiar with the visit.

Israeli aircrafts attack Syrian air defence battery

The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) announced on Sunday that Israeli warplanes had attacked a Syrian air defence position where, according to the IDF, an anti-aircraft rocket was fired in Israel’s direction.

According to the IDF statement, Israeli fighter jets targeted additional nearby locations as well.

Early on Sunday, a Syrian anti-aircraft rocket was fired into Israel, according to the IDF, and it detonated in the air on Israeli soil.

The Israeli home front’s civilian population has not received any particular instructions, and no injuries have been recorded, it claimed.

Israeli media reported Sunday that debris from the Syrian-launched rocket landed in two neighborhoods of the southern city of Rahat in Israel, damaging homes.

Meanwhile Syria’s official news agency SANA said Israel carried out air attacks from the direction northeast of Beirut, targeting some points near the city of Homs.

  • Animal testing for cosmetics officially outlawed in Canada

Animal testing for cosmetics officially outlawed in Canada

Canada has taken action to abolish the practise of testing cosmetics on animals, following a number of other nations and American states in doing so.

The choice was revealed by the Canadian government in a news release on Tuesday. According to the news release, Bill C-47 changes the Food and Drugs Act to prohibit both cosmetic product testing on animals and the sale of goods based on the results of such testing.

The news release stated that “rarely is animal testing for cosmetics conducted in Canada.”

Canada will join the ranks of the European Union, Australia, the United Kingdom, and South Korea, which have all moved to ban cosmetic testing on animals, according to the release.

A total of 44 countries have passed laws banning cosmetic animal testing, according to the Humane Society International. Additionally, 10 states in the US have banned the practice: New York, Virginia, California, Louisiana, New Jersey, Maine, Hawaii, Nevada, Illinois, and Maryland.

“Protecting animals, now and in the future, is something that many Canadians have been calling for, and something we can all celebrate,” said Canadian Minister of Health Jean-Yves Duclos in the release. “We are proud to move forward with this measure, and to assure Canadians that the products they buy are cruelty-free. We will keep working with experts and international partners to explore safe, cruelty-free alternatives so no more animals suffer and die due to cosmetic testing.”

The release added Health Canada is also working to identify “effective alternatives to animal testing” outside the cosmetic world.

The amendment banning cosmetic testing on animals in one of a package of amendments included in the measure. The text of the bill stipulates “No person shall sell a cosmetic unless the person can establish the safety of the cosmetic without relying on data derived from a test conducted on an animal that could cause pain, suffering or injury, whether physical or mental, to the animal” and that “No person shall conduct a test on an animal that could cause pain, suffering or injury, whether physical or mental, to the animal.”

The bill was first read in the House of Commons in April and received royal assent on June 22.

Cosmetic testing has historically included “toxicity tests” in which animals are focused to consume or inhale certain chemicals, or have the chemicals applied to their skin or eyes, according to the Humane Society International’s Animal-Free Safety Assessment Collaboration.

In addition to being unnecessarily cruel, animal tests are also less effective compared to newer forms of assessment like computer modeling or tests using human cells, said the Humane Society International.

France riots: Grandmother of teenager slain in police stop urges restraint

As French authorities prepare for a sixth night of rioting, the grandmother of the 17-year-old boy who was shot dead by a police officer in a suburb of Paris has called for an end to the violence that erupted after his murder.

The grandmother of the protester who died, Nahel Merzouk, issued a warning to the demonstrators on Sunday, telling CNN affiliate BFMTV: “They should not damage the schools, not break the buses, it was the moms who take the buses.”

The grandma, who BMFTV identified as Nadia, added, “I’m tired,” adding that Nahel’s mother “doesn’t have a life anymore.”

Meanwhile, security forces will again have more than 45,000 police and gendarmes deployed across France on Sunday night following the violent public unrest, the government said.

Many of the people detained since the protests began on Tuesday are minors, Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin said Saturday, adding that the average age of the more than 2,000 detainees is 17 years old.

The situation across France so far on Sunday has been less tense than Saturday, with only sporadic protests reported, but the violence normally kicks off after sunset, according to CNN producers in France.

French President Emmanuel Macron will meet the country’s prime minister, interior minister and justice minister at 7 p.m. local time (1 p.m. ET) to take an update on the latest on the nationwide protests, the Elysee Palace said in a statement.

Early Sunday morning, the mayor of a Paris suburb said his home was attacked, calling it “an assassination attempt” on his family.

“At 1:30 a.m., while I was at the city hall like the past three nights, individuals rammed their car upon my residence before setting fire to it to burn my house, inside which my wife and my two young children slept,” said mayor Vincent Jeanbrun of L’Haÿ-les-Roses, a commune in the southern suburbs of Paris, in a statement.

“While trying to protect the children and escape the attackers, my wife and one of my children were injured.”

Jeanbrun said that he had “no words strong enough to describe his emotion towards the horror of this night” and thanked police and rescue services for their help.

The Créteil prosecutor’s office has classified the incident as an “attempted murder,” prosecutor Stéphane Hardouin told reporters Sunday.

Hardouin said the initial findings of a police investigation suggest that a flaming car “was launched to burn down the pavilion,” entering Jeanbrun’s property at around 1:30am local time.

“Hitting a low wall, the vehicle stopped… before it could reach the veranda of the house. Only the front gate was hit, along with the family’s vehicle,” the prosecutor said in a news conference outside the mayor’s home.

He said the mayor’s wife and two children, aged 5 and 7, fled through the back garden. While running away, the mayor’s wife hurt her shin which “appears to be broken,” according to the prosecutor.

Hardouin also said forensic police have found a fire accelerant in a bottle of Coke. He didn’t specify which substance the accelerant was.

“Every effort will be made to find the perpetrators and bring them to justice,” the prosecutor concluded.

France has been rocked by a wave of protests following the death of Nahel, a 17-year-old of Algerian descent who was shot by a police officer in Nanterre earlier in the week and whose funeral took place on Saturday at a mosque in the Paris suburb amid a heavy security presence.

The youth’s death has reignited a debate on policing in France’s marginalized communities and raised questions over whether race was a factor in his death.

A GoFundMe page in support of the family of the police officer accused of fatally shooting the teenager had reached almost €650,000 ($710,000) on Sunday afternoon.

The page was started by a far-right TV pundit and claims the policeman “only did his job and is now paying a hard price for it.”

The officer has been charged with voluntary homicide and placed in preliminary detention, the prosecutor of Nanterre said earlier in the week.

In comparison, another crowdfunding page in support of Nahel’s mother had raised over €97,000 ($105,000) at the time of writing. The page reads Nahel “leaves behind a mother torn apart by the loss of her only son. She needs our support to face the long trials that lie ahead.”

While the French government has deployed security forces and riot police across the country, the unrest continued with another night of protests on Saturday.

More than 700 people were detained across France overnight, according to a provisional tally from the Interior Ministry.

The statement added 45 police officers and gendarmes had been injured overnight, while 74 buildings including 26 police and gendarmes stations were damaged and 577 vehicles set on fire.

The previous night, more than 1,300 people were detained and 2,560 fires reported on public roads.

Meanwhile, China has warned its citizens in France to remain vigilant after a bus carrying a Chinese tour group in the southern city of Marseille had its windows smashed, resulting in multiple minor injuries, the country’s foreign ministry said in a statement Sunday.

China’s Consulate General in Marseille has lodged an official complaint and urged French authorities to ensure the safety of Chinese citizens and property amid the unrest.

The ministry did not say when the incident took place or how many people were injured. It said all the tourists on the group have since left France.

Measles outbreak in Sudan’s displacement camps kills at least 13 children – NGO

An international medical NGO on Sunday reported that at least 13 children have passed away recently during a possible measles outbreak in internal displacement camps in Sudan’s White Nile state, amid fighting between the two warring factions of the country.

“The circumstance is urgent. The most critical health issues, according to Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), or Doctors Without Borders, are suspected measles and child malnutrition.

MSF Sudan stated in a series of tweets: “Sudan‘s White Nile state is receiving an increasing number of refugees from the fighting. Thousands are being housed in nine camps, mostly women and kids.

From June 6 to 27, the NGO treated 223 children with suspected measles in White Nile camps, it said, with 72 – including the 13 who died – admitted to two clinics it supports.

“We are receiving sick children with suspected measles every day, most with complications,” MSF Sudan tweeted.

The NGO said it had received a total of 3,145 patients to the two clinics in the month of June, adding, “as more people arrive, there’s an urgent need to increase assistance, scale up services like vaccinations, nutritional support, shelter, water & sanitation.”

“The rainy season is approaching, and we’re concerned about a rise in waterborne diseases and malaria endemic to the area,” MSF Sudan warned.

There has been a steep rise in Sudanese refugees since fighting between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) broke out on April 15. Nearly 2.8 million people have fled, according to data from IOM, the UN Migration Agency.

At least 2,152,936 people are estimated to have been internally displaced, while another 644,861 fled across Sudan’s borders into neighboring countries, according to the IOM’s Displacement Tracking Matrix report published Tuesday.

  • Israeli forces conduct deadly attack in Jenin, West Bank

Israeli forces conduct deadly attack in Jenin, West Bank

At least three Palestinians were killed and 25 others were hurt as Israeli forces conducted a significant military operation in Jenin in the northern West Bank overnight on Sunday, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry.

The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) said in a statement that it started an “extensive counterterrorism effort in the area of the city of Jenin and the Jenin Camp” and that it struck “terrorist infrastructure” in the early hours of Monday morning.

Residents of Jenin reported hearing explosions and a lot of gunfire in the neighbourhood to CNN, while footage from the scene showed wounded Palestinians being transported to the hospital by ambulance.

Of those injured, seven are critical, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health. Mahmoud al-Saadi, director of the Palestinian Red Crescent in Jenin, said most of the injuries are “serious and in the upper part of the body,” adding the process of transferring the injured has been difficult.

Footage shared with journalists appeared to show operations ongoing in parts of the Jenin refugee camp and Israeli military vehicles on the streets of Jenin on Monday morning. CNN has not been able to independently verify the videos.

The IDF said it struck a joint operational command center for the Jenin Camp and operatives of the Jenin Brigade, a Palestinian militant group associated with Islamic Jihad.

“The operational command center also served as an advanced observation and reconnaissance center, a place where armed terrorists would gather before and after terrorist activities,” the IDF said, adding that the camp was a “site for weapons and explosives” and “hub for coordination and communication among the terrorists.”

“Additionally, the command center provided shelter for wanted individuals involved in carrying out terror attacks in recent months in the area,” it said.

The IDF later said it had seized explosive devices during the operations, which were carried out in coordination with the Israel Securities Authority (ISA).

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said in a statement the IDF have been “operating against terror hotspots” in Jenin and that “anyone who harms the citizens of Israel, will pay a heavy price.”

“We are closely watching the actions of our enemies and Israel’s defense establishment is prepared for every scenario,” the minister said.

The Jenin Brigade claimed it had severely damaged at least one Israeli military vehicle with improvised explosive devices and its militants continue to clash with Israeli forces “to prevent its advance inside the camp.”

Palestinian Islamic Jihad said it will face its enemy “with all possible retaliation options,” in response to the Israeli operations in Jenin.

“The aggression on Jenin will not achieve its targets, Jenin will not surrender. We will face the enemy with all possible retaliation options in response to the enemy aggression on Jenin,” the militant group posted to its official Telegram channel.

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas condemned the large-scale Israeli military operation, calling it “a new war crime.”

“Security and stability will not be achieved in the region unless our Palestinian people feel it. What the Israeli occupation government is doing in the city of Jenin and its camp is a new war crime against our defenseless people,” he said, according to presidential spokesman Nabil Abu Rudeineh.

The raid comes less than two weeks after an Israeli military raid on Jenin erupted into a massive firefight, leaving at least five Palestinians dead and dozens wounded. Eight Israeli troops were injured and successfully evacuated, according to the IDF.

In a separate incident, a 21-year-old man, identified as Muhammed Hassanein, was shot and killed by Israeli forces at the northern entrance of Al-Bireh near Ramallah in the West Bank, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health on Monday. The IDF has not yet commented on the incident.

  • British tourists dive into water as large fire destroys wooden boat

British tourists dive into water as large fire destroys wooden boat

The wooden ship that was carrying a group of anxious tourists caught fire and caused them to jump overboard.

The boat caught fire off the Greek island of Rhodes on Thursday, leaving 82 passengers—including British tourists—running for their lives. The boat was only 300 yards from land.

Families and little children jumped into the water as the deck was quickly destroyed by the raging inferno within minutes.

Pictures of the incident were horrifying, showing huge flames engulfing the entire boat as thick, black smoke rose into the sky.

Some escapees swam back to shore on Stegna beach in the town of Archangelos, while others piled into rescue boats that came to their aid.

Greek coast guard officials said everyone on board was eventually brought to safety before the ruins of the destroyed ship sank.

But witnesses say many were left ‘traumatised’ by the incident which saw a nine-year-old girl and 50-year-old woman suffer minor burn injuries, according to local reports.

The child and woman were taken to hospital but doctors say their condition isn’t serious.

Shaun Williams, an aircraft engineer from St Ives, Cornwall, said he was on a boat trip with his family while on holiday when the fire broke out.

The 55-year-old said they were about half an hour into the trip when they stopped near Stegna beach, off the east coast of Rhodes, to go snorkelling.

He told MailOnline: ‘We were on the top deck and the crew started shouting but we could not understand. We then saw the smoke.

‘The crew tried to fight the fire but the boat was made of wood and the fire grew quickly.’

Mr Williams said there was ‘a lot of panic’ with families with young children on board and the captain of the boat told everyone to ‘get in the sea’ after the crew handed out life jackets.

‘We all jumped in and I would say within a minute or two the place we had been standing was fully ablaze,’ he said.

A number of boats in the area came to their rescue and took the evacuated passengers back to shore, according to Mr Williams.

He added: ‘We had no injuries but my nine-year-old son was traumatised for some time.’

Emergency services, including firefighters, were called to the scene immediately after the fire broke out.

Stunned bystanders watched on in horror from the beach, with the huge smoke clouds out at sea clearly visible.

Greece’s Central Port Authority said it would take measures to deal with the marine pollution after the boat sank.

Greek authorities confirmed that fortunately no passengers were seriously hurt and were later transferred to their hotels by bus.

Last month, at least 78 people were killed after a boat capsized with 700 people on board.
