I will only campaign for a political party, if I am paid $1 billion -Kwaku Manu

Kumawood actor Kwaku Manu, while initially declining to campaign for any political party, expressed his willingness to reconsider if offered a payment of $1 billion.

Perhaps, this is a message the host of Aggressive on Youtube is sending to the various political parties who hope to seek his services as the country prepares for next year’ general elections.

Kwaku Manu, who has acted alongside Agya Koo, Lil Win, Nana Ama McBrown, Vivian Jill, Akrobeto and Emelia Brobbey, among others, said no political party can pay him to campaign for them.

“I am not bragging, but no amount of money can influence me to campaign for any political party, whether NPP or NDC. Unless they are willing to pay me over $1 billion, which I know they wouldn’t.

“I vote every four years but I believe as a celebrity, it is good not to disclose the political party you support,” he said.

Kwaku Manu will definitely make the list when the list of Kumawood comic actors are called. He ‘reigned’ for about only three years in the movie industry, unlike colleague comic actors such as Lil Win, Agya Koo, etc.

He attributes it to a five-year ban slapped on him at the peak of his career.

“Till today, I can’t tell you the reason why I was banned from the movie industry. Maybe it was because I was rising so quickly and the movie producers did not like that. They thought that banning me will be the end of Kwaku Manu but God works in a way no one can understand. I am making it today and it is all the blessings of God.”

“There is so much hatred and backbiting in the movie industry and it is about time we stopped it because it doesn’t help in any way. We are supposed to be united and fight for a common goal, but here we are fighting each other all the time. How can we expect it to grow?” he queried.

Also, Kwaku Manu now wants to live a quiet life and one of the things he has done towards that is to stop posting his children on social media.

NDC MP alleges heavy deployment of soldiers alongside Police in Assin North by-election

Kwame Governs Agbodza, Member of Parliament for Adaklu has alleged that 500 soldiers have been deployed to Assin North where a crucial by-election is taking place today, June 27.

He wondered why a security task known to be strictly undertaken by the police, which point has been buttressed by the Inspector-General of Police, is being augmented with the military without any concrete explanations.

“The IGP has made it clear that elections security is the responsibility of the Police. So what duties will the 500 soldiers deployed and on their way to Assin North be performing tomorrow?

“Is this deployment at the request of the IGP? Somebody must provide urgent answers,” he disclosed in a tweet on the eve of the polls.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has fielded its ousted MP for the area James Gyakye Quayson who will come up against the ruling New Patriotic Party’s Charles Opoku.

Ahead of the vote, a fellow NDC MP Nelson Dafeamekpor has slammed the IGP over a directive that all police assigned to MPs should return their arms to the local police.

A directive he said was unconstitutional to the extent that it varied the condition of service of MPs and also exposed them to security risks.

Voters in the Assin North constituency are demonstrating their eagerness to exercise their democratic rights.

A GhanaWeb reporter present at the Methodist Primary 1 polling station in Assin Breku captured images of voters forming queues as early as 5:00 am even though polls formally open at 7:00 am.

Nimatu Yakubu reports that as early as 5:30 am, election materials had already arrived at the particular polling station, and preparations for the voting process were in full swing.

The images from the polling station depict a diverse group of individuals patiently waiting in line, eager to have their voices heard through the ballot box. The early turnout suggests a strong sense of civic duty among the residents of Assin North.

Free SHS: Increasing enrollment has not diminished learning outcomes – Education Minister confirms

Minister of Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum has lashed out at critics of the Free Senior High School (SHS) programme.

Despite the unfavourable criticism, the Minister stated that the policy’s growth of enrollment has not jeopardised student learning outcomes.

He stated that the 2022 West African Senior Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results demonstrate the government’s commitment to reforming the country’s education sector.

Dr. Adutwum remarked that the approach has yielded various outcomes during the opening of the 60th anniversary of Kumasi High School in the Ashanti Region.

One key accomplishment he highlighted was that the strategy increased enrolment and enhanced learning results.

“For all those who thought increasing enrolment at the high schools would diminish learning outcomes, I have news for you: increasing enrolment did not diminish learning outcomes, and if you doubt it, look at Kumasi High School.

“Go and look at the WAEC results, and it will tell you that we had the best learning outcomes in this country last year. In the last eight years, the best results were the 2022 results, but I don’t blame people who make that conjecture that things are bad because, around the world, countries that have increased enrollment always suffer.”

According to him, the government is committed to striking a balance between access and quality to ensure that Ghanaian students obtain a solid education that prepares them for the future.

Voters accuse NPP of vote buying at Methodist polling center

Some voters at the Methodist Primary 1 polling station in Assin Breku have accused the NPP of vote buying.

Barely 30 minutes before the commencement of voting, some voters at the DA JSS Bereku raised alarm about voting buying in a house close to the voting center.

When GhanaWeb’s reporter got to the venue, there were some voters at the said house and journalists were being chased away from the venue.

The northern regional chairman of the NPP also blocked cameras and ordered his party members not to speak with journalists.

Meanwhile, voting commenced at exactly 7am at Methodist Park which has 4 polling stations.

Assin North by-election: ABA Fuseini predicts massive win for Gyakye Quayson

The Member of Parliament for Sagnarigu, Alhassan Bashir Alhassan (ABA) Fuseini, has said that the Assin North by-election is a done deal for the candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), James Gyakye Quayson.

Speaking to Nimatu Yakubu at one of the polling stations for the by-election, the Methodist Primary School 2, the MP said that Gyakye Quayson was wrongly removed from parliament and today the people of Assin North would give him justice.

“At the end of the day, the verdict of the people, which I believe would be a resounding victory for Honourable Gyakye Quayson, would be asserted.

“It is a keen contest all right but I believe that he would win handsomely… the people have appreciated that he has suffered injustice. He doesn’t deserve to have been ousted as a Member of Parliament because he did everything that was legitimate and proper to be elected MP… So, I believe that the good people of Assin North would give him justice,” he said.

The MP added that even though Quayson was denied access to resources in the three years he was an MP, he did some good for his constituents.

On the electoral process, ABA Fuseini said that so far everything is going well as at the time he spoke to GhanaWeb at 7:00 am.

Make money, women are naturally attracted to success – Reno Omokri

Popular Nigerian author and activist Reno Omokri has advised men to seek out money rather than pleading for a woman to accept their meagre lifestyle.

The activist said women are naturally created to move towards where they can enjoy soft life.

In a tweet on Monday, June 26, the activist observed the popular phrase, “gold digger,” which is being used by some men to describe ladies who rely on them for financial support.

He likened money and poverty to salt and sugar referring to ladies as ants who will always go for the sugar because of its sweetness.

His post reads, “It is only men who don’t understand natural and spiritual principles that think women are gold diggers. Let me ask you a question.

“If you put salt and sugar on a table, what will an ant go for? Of course, sugar! God designed ants to follow sweetness. And God designed women to follow success. That is why He created Eve for Adam only after Adam became a successful gardener.

“Not BEFORE. After. Just as it is unnatural for an ant to go after salt, likewise, it is unnatural for a woman to be attracted to failure. So, go and make money and stop expecting unnatural, unspiritual, and unscientific expectations from women!”

Skit maker, Trinityguy detained for allegedly sexually exploiting a minor in a video

Abdullahi Maruff Adisa, also known as Trinityguy, a popular skit creator, has been placed on remand by the Oyo State Magistrate Court in Iyaganku, Ibadan for allegedly sexually harassing a minor in one of his widely circulated skit videos.

It will be recalled that the Nigeria Police Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi had last week called for the skit maker’s arrest following a trending video of his dangerous pranks.

Oyo State Police Command in a statement on Friday announced that the skit maker and parent of the little girl in the viral video were quizzed by the Command and would appear in court Monday 26 June 2023.

Appearing before the Magistrate counsel to the defendant, Oludare Adebayo urged the court to grant his client bail.

Magistrate PO Adetuyibi while denying the bail application, said the allegation against the skit maker is currently receiving the attention of the state Ministry of Justice.

The court, however, ordered that the parents of the little girl in the video be remanded alongside Trinityguy till the next sitting.

  • Promote citizens’ participation in local governance – Dr. Eric Oduro Osae

Promote citizens’ participation in local governance – Dr. Eric Oduro Osae

, a local governance expert, has stated that encouraging citizen participation is one of the best ways to raise interest in local governance and voter turnout in this year’s District Level Election (DLE).

He said considering the low turnout in the DLE over the past years, projections had been made that the 2023 DLE might not receive more than 35 per cent turnout if something was not done about it.

He said Section Six of the Local Governance Act 2016 (Act 936), as amended by Act 940, stated that DLE shall be held every four years, at least six months apart from the Presidential and Parliamentary elections.

However, he said majority of Ghanaians did not show interest in local governance and subsequently did not participate in the DLE.

Dr Osae in a paper he presented at a forum on this year’s DLE said the country’s current local governance and decentralisation system had assigned decision-making powers to local residents; a deliberate government strategy to bring equitable, rapid and balanced development to all areas in the country.

    Improve voter turnout

He has, therefore, called for the amendment of Article 55(3) and allow political parties to sponsor candidate to District and Unit Committee elections as done in the presidential elections to drive voters to vote during the DLE.

He said there must be a national conversation on whether or not to amend Article 55(3) of the 1992 Constitution to allow political parties to sponsor candidates to local government elections, including the election of MMDCEs at the lower level.

    Education on DLE

To increase turnout, Dr Osae also called on the government to intensify education on the DLE, urging civil society organisations, opinion leaders and traditional authorities to take interest in preparing their people, including women’s participation in local governance.

“The NCCE should also be resourced to start its sensitisation and civic education activities on the DLE early enough.

The EC must also publish the 2023 DLE time table early enough to whip up interest,” he said.

He said professional bodies must encourage their members to put themselves up for election to make their skills available to the Metropolitan Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs).

He mentioned that the MMDAs were the ultimate beneficiaries in the activities of those elected, urging them to work through the district information officer to disseminate information on the upcoming elections.

Assin North elections: Police assure residents of adequate security

The Assin North community has been reassured by the Ghana Police Service that sufficient security measures have been implemented in the area to maintain safety, law, and order before, during, and after today’s election.

“We wish to urge the people of the Assin North Constituency to go about their normal activities freely including going out to exercise their civic duty of casting their vote,” it said.

It gave the assurance at a meeting held at the instance of the Inspector-General of Police, Dr George Akuffo Dampare and the Police Management Board with key stakeholders in the election including the New Patriotic Party (NPP), the National Democratic Congress (NDC), the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) and the Electoral Commission (EC) to enhance the working relationship among all stakeholders towards a peaceful election.

     False information

A statement issued and signed by the Director, Public Affairs, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Grace Ansah-Akrofi, said the security concerns of all the stakeholders were noted and had been factored into the final security strategy for the election.

“However, one concern all the stakeholders want the public to help them address is the circulation of false information on social media.

In this regard, we wish to urge the public to be circumspect in their reportage on the election and avoid circulating false information that has the likelihood to occasion a breach of peace since the police will take the necessary action against anyone found culpable,” it said.

The statement said the NPP team was led by its National Chairman, Stephen Ntim, and National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye, while the NDC team was led by the National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, and General Secretary, Fifi Kwetey.

The LPG was also led by its General Secretary, Jerry Owusu Appauh, and regional executive members and the Electoral Commission was led by its Director of Operations.

“We wish to express our gratitude to all our stakeholders for their cooperation so far and look forward to the same level of cooperation for the last lap of the election to ensure a safe, secure and peaceful exercise,” it said.

    Voters/Candidates

A total of 41,168 registered voters are expected to cast their votes in 99 polling stations across the Assin North Constituency in the poll today.

    The by-election has three candidates.

They are Charles Opoku of the NPP, James Gyakye Quayson, NDC, and Bernice Enyonam Sefenu of the Liberal Party of Ghana.

It was necessitated by the removal of Mr Quayson of the NDC as the Member of Parliament for the Assin North Constituency due to a Supreme Court ruling on his dual citizenship case.

    Observers

In a related development, the Coalition of Domestic Election Observers (CODEO) says it has deployed 15 observers for today’s by-election.

It said the deployment was in fulfilment of its mandate to mobilise citizens to actively participate in the electoral process and to complement the efforts of the Electoral Commission in ensuring a transparent, free, fair and peaceful by-election.

Enforce bye-laws that prohibit littering — Hassan Ayariga

All Peoples Congress (APC) founder and leader Hassan Ayariga has pleaded with metropolitan municipal and district chief executives (MMDCEs) to strictly enforce byelaws that forbid littering in their communities.

In addition, he charged the citizenry to endeavour to clear choked gutters in their communities to avoid flooding.

Interacting with the media in Accra, he intimated that flooding had become perennial in almost every suburb of the country during the rainy season.

    Drizzle

He wondered why anytime it drizzled, there was flooding, and expressed worry about how people lost their lives when “God blesses us with rains”.

He, therefore, called on individuals, landlords, the clergy, chiefs, assembly members and politicians to organise communal labour every two weeks to clear gutters that were choked.

Mr Ayariga further stated that “we cannot blame politicians when it comes to saving human life”.

    Condolences

In a related development, the APC founder expressed his condolence to the bereaved family of the police officer who was killed last Thursday.

He said there were worst things happening in the University of Ghana, Legon, with robbers and hooligans attacking, butchering and robbing “our children of their valuables in broad daylight and at night”.

The university, he said, was no longer safe for students to attend evening lectures and go about their daily activities anymore.

“I am calling on government and the school authorities to put measures in place to ensure that the safety of students is guaranteed and stop the situation.

The number of students being assaulted and harassed is becoming increasingly dangerous,” he said.

“Let’s work together to make sure our future leaders are protected from these threats and attacks,” he stated.

We are ready for the Assin North by-election – EC

The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced its preparedness to conduct the Assin North by-election on June 27, ensuring a process that is free, fair, and transparent.

In all, about 41,168 registered voters are expected to cast their ballots in 99 election centres.

More than 198 Biometric Verification Devices (BVD) are expected to be deployed with two at each polling centre.

Mrs Gladys Pinkrah, the Regional Director of EC in an interview with the Ghana News Agency said the EC had taken delivery of ballot papers, a notice of poll, and biometric certification devices as of Wednesday, June 21.

The Commission had commissioned training for EC officials ahead of the much-anticipated election fixed for Tuesday, June 27, for the by-election in the Assin North Constituency of the Central Region.

This followed a unanimous decision by the Supreme Court on Wednesday (May 17) declaring as unconstitutional, the election of James Gyakye Quayson as the National Democratic Congress Member of Parliament (MP) for the area.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate, Charles Opoku, is number one on the ballot paper, with the Liberal Party of Ghana’s (LPG) candidate, Bernice Enyonam Sefenu, occupying the second position on the ballot and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, James Gyakye Quayson, on number three.

Mrs Pinkrah urged political actors to learn from the mistakes and excesses of the past elections and make the by-election more successful.

She called on the media to uphold maximum journalistic standards, values, and ethics in the reportage of electoral processes and activities to avoid the threats that came from fake news.

Meanwhile, all participating parties, namely NPP, NDC and the LGP rounded up their campaigns on Sunday, leaving the town with an uneasy calm.

The parties have resorted to house-to-house and one-on-one campaigns to sway voters to their side.

Dr George Akuffo Dampare, the Inspector General of Police, together with the leadership of the NPP and NDC have called for peace ahead of the election.

At a news conference at Assin-Akonfodi, the IGP pledged to ensure law and order during and after the election.

The conference was attended by Mr Asiedu Nketiah, the Chairman and Mr Fiifi Fiave Kwetey, the General Secretary of the NDC, while Mr Stephen Ayensu Ntim, the National Chairman of NPP attended.

Assin North goes to the polls today

The much anticipated Assin North by-election comes off today, June 27, 2023.

Three contestants will be partaking in the elections.

The Electoral Commission (EC) last week concluded with the balloting for positions on the ballot paper for the Assin North by-election in the Central Region.

The Central Regional Director of the EC, Gladys Pinkrah, who disclosed this in an interview said balloting took place after the close of nominations at 5p.m. on Wednesday, June 14, 2023.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate, Charles Opoku would be the number one on the ballot paper, with the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) candidate, Bernice Enyonam Sefenu occupying the second position on the ballot and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, James Gyakye Quayson picking the third spot on the ballot paper.

Voters in the Assin North constituency are demonstrating their eagerness to exercise their democratic rights. GhanaWeb reporter present at the Methodist Primary 1 polling station in Assin Breku captured images of voters forming queues as early as 5:00 am even though polls formally open at 7:00 am.

The images from the polling station depict a diverse group of individuals patiently waiting in line, eager to have their voices heard through the ballot box. The early turnout suggests a strong sense of civic duty among the residents of Assin North.

This by-election features three candidates vying for the parliamentary seat. The New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate, Charles Opoku, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, James Gyakye Quayson, and the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) candidate Bernice Enyonam Sefenu, are in a race that is believed to be between the NDC and NPP.

The election has garnered significant attention and has been closely followed by both local and national media outlets. It is seen as a crucial event that will shape the political landscape in the region.

It takes place after the expungement of the former member of Parliament James Gyakye Quayson over a dual citizenship case that went as far as the Supreme Court of Ghana.

  • William’s $3 million plan to eradicate homelessness in five years

William’s $3 million plan to eradicate homelessness in five years

The Prince of Wales has started a large-scale initiative with the goal of putting an end to homelessness in five years.

With the Homewards project, Prince William intends to follow in the footsteps of Finland, where homelessness has been all but eliminated. The project will first concentrate on six places throughout the UK.

Businesses, organisations, and individuals will collaborate as part of the £3 million effort to create “tailor-made” action plans to address homelessness in their communities.

William already supports the homeless charities The Passage and Centrepoint. He began a two-day visit of the UK this morning in Lambeth, south London, to introduce the Homewards initiative.

It’s hoped with this project rough sleeping, sofa surfing and other forms of temporary accommodation become a thing of the past.

William said: ‘In a modern and progressive society, everyone should have a safe and secure home, be treated with dignity and given the support they need.

‘Through Homewards, I want to make this a reality and over the next five years, give people across the UK hope that homelessness can be prevented when we collaborate.

‘I am fortunate to have seen first-hand the tireless work of people and organisations across the sector, the tangible impact their efforts can have and what can be done when communities are able to focus on preventing homelessness, rather than managing it.

‘It’s a big task, but I firmly believe that by working together it is possible to make homelessness rare, brief, and unrepeated and I am very much looking forward to working with our six locations to make our ambition a reality.’

Each of the six locations will be supported to deliver a housing project to ‘test new ways to unlock homes at scale’.

The locations were selected after a bidding process, and it’s hoped Homewards’ results will create models which can be adopted by other parts of the UK.

Matt Downie, chief executive of charity Crisis, says there are around 300,000 people experiencing homelessness in the UK on any given night.

He said factors ‘pushing’ people into homelessness include a ‘severe shortage of genuinely affordable homes’, rising rents, the increasing cost of living, low wages, and insecure work, adding that people are unable to cope with ‘sudden economic shocks’ and the welfare system is ‘unable to support people’.

Matt added: ‘Homelessness is not inevitable, as a provider of services to thousands of people across Britain every year.

‘We know that in most cases it’s preventable, and in every case it can be ended.

‘The best way to tackle homelessness is to stop it happening in the first place.

‘We’ve seen it in other countries such as Finland, where homelessness is all but ended, and we’ve seen it when we follow innovative programmes that give people housing first.

‘We know we can do the same here with the right choices and by working together.

‘With levels of homelessness only set to increase innovative programmes like Homewards are more necessary than ever.’

William described his project as ‘an additive to what is already being done’ in a Sunday Times.

When asked if there were plans for affordable housing on Duchy of Cornwall land he inherited on becoming Prince of Wales, he said: ‘There is. Absolutely. Social housing. You’ll see that when it’s ready.’

A royal source said: ‘The prince believes that rather than continue to shine a light on the issue, that it’s time to take action.

‘And yes, he may be in the position he is in, but this isn’t about big gestures, this isn’t about a PR stunt.

‘This is about trying to deliver systemic change to the way that we as a society think about homelessness.’

Republic, which campaigns for an elected head of state, criticised the plans and called on the future king to ‘directly’ challenge the Government for, it claimed, causing homelessness.

Republic chief Graham Smith said: ‘Homelessness is the result of government policy and lack of investment, it isn’t something that can be resolved by charity or royal patronage.

‘It is also, in part, the result of economic inequality, something represented by the super-rich royals who live in multiple palatial homes.’

He highlighted the prince’s three homes: Adelaide Cottage, a four-bedroom property in Windsor Castle’s Home Park, Kensington Palace’s 20-room Apartment 1A and Anmer Hall, a mansion on the King’s private Sandringham estate in Norfolk.

  • Vote for the ‘prison candidate’ – A plus to Assin North voters

Vote for the ‘prison candidate’ – A plus to Assin North voters

Kwame Asare Bediako, also known as A Plus, a former musician and political activist, has encouraged the residents of Assin North to contemplate voting for a candidate who might potentially face imprisonment. This approach, he suggests, could bring about development and garner government attention for their constituency.

A Plus argues that recent by-elections have proven to be instrumental in prompting the government to invest in various communities, and a similar opportunity could benefit Assin North as it happened to Kumawu in the recent by-election.

A Plus specifically encouraged the residents to support the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, James Gyakye Quayson, who is currently facing criminal charges at the High Court.

According to him, if Quayson is to win the election and subsequently lose the court case, it would trigger another by-election, ultimately leading to increased government focus and development in the area.

Addressing the residents, A Plus expressed excitement about the recent developments brought about by the by-election, including the provision of an astroturf, and other goodies the residents are enjoying as a result of the June, 27 vote.

He humorously mentioned that if the election was to be postponed until next year, the government might bring Korle Bu Teaching Hospital to Assin North.

He disagreed with President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s recent statement advising against voting for a candidate who may face imprisonment and argued that voting for such a candidate would lead to another by-election and consequently attract substantial government investment, including the relocation and of Parliament and possibly the Tema Port to Assin North.

Read a transcription of his video message below:

“Assin North constituency, I greet you all, and good evening to everyone. Some years bring evil, but some also bring good. Look at what you have received because of the by-election. You have now received an astroturf, rice, cement… I’m even certain that if the election were to be held next year, they would bring Korle Bu to Assin North. God has blessed you, and I hope you will have another by-election.

“Yesterday, I saw my own father, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, who is my everything. He came to Assin North for a campaign. Daddy, you have become nice, and it’s been a long time since I saw you. He said something that made me very happy. He said, ‘Don’t vote for someone who will go to prison.’ But let me tell you, he is lying. Vote for someone who will go to prison. Will you get anything after voting, then your MP is jailed and there is another by-election?

“I swear to God, they will bring parliament to Assin North. They will come and build the parliament house in Assin North. They will bring everything there. Right now, it is the by-elections that are bringing development to Ghana. So, don’t listen to what my father said. He is lying. Vote for someone who will go to prison.

“If they say someone will go to prison, that’s the person you should vote for. Vote for Quayson. So, if he goes to prison and there is a by-election, I swear to God, the things that will come… Do you know that they will bring the Tema Port to Assin North? They will… Boys in Assin North, use your brains and vote for the prison candidate so that there will be another by-election, and they will come and develop the place.”

The Assin North by-election has been scheduled to take place on June 27, 2023, following the expungement of the former member of Parliament James Gyakye Quayson over a dual citizenship case that went as far as the Supreme Court of Ghana.

A conservation group reported that around 5,000 humpback whales had been observed in Australian seas during a record-breaking annual migration census, with one curious whale being seen trailing a kayaker just off Sydney’s well-known Bondi beach.

Every year, specialists and the general public travel to the coast of New South Wales to perform an annual count, and on Sunday, the census revealed the biggest number of whales ever—4,792—adding to the already thrilling “megapod” sighting in 2021.

According to Steve Trikoulis, vice president of the Organisation for the Rescue and Research of Cetaceans (ORRCA), many of the whales were seen only a few yards from the shore.

“They were traveling to Queensland and Hervey Bay to make babies,” he told CNN. “It was exciting for people (on shore) to see them… jumping around.”

Better weather and cleaner water were just some factors that contributed to the rise in the number of whales this year, he added.

“The numbers are healthy and have definitely increased,” Trikoulis said. “We’ve never seen so many of them so early in the season and we strongly believe it’s because of the better weather. We’ve also seen them swimming more closer to shore.”

Humpback whales are known to swim great distances every year and have one of the longest migrations of any mammal.

Their annual round-trip journey between June and early September covers up to 6,214 miles (10,000 kilometers).

Starting in Antarctica, they swim in large groups to Australia – arriving in the northeastern state of Queensland. The area isone of the country’s most popular spots for whale watching.

Humpback whales spend their summers feeding in sub-tropical waters, where they also mate and give birth, according to Australia’s Department of Agriculture, Water and Environment.

A rare “megapod” of more than 100 whales was spotted in September 2021 in waters off the town of Bermagui, about 236 miles (380 kilometers) from Sydney.

One kayaker had a particularly close-up view in an encounter that was captured by a drone.

In the stunning footage, an enormous humpback follows a white kayak in turquoise clear waters off Bondi beach.

“Whales are always a treat as they cruise up the coast during migration season,” said Jason Iggleden, the drone pilot.

Iggleden often films other marine creatures like sharks and seals off Australia’s coasts – uploading footage to his Drone Shark app, which provides real-time images of beaches and vital informationfor surfers.

“There’s a wondrous world in the deep blue and I have had the ability to share it with audiences.” he told CNN. “Human and sea life interactions are always so fascinating and it’s a reminder to all of us to appreciate, respect and coexist with our oceans.”

  • Russian anxiety caused by Wagner uprising – Report

Russian anxiety caused by Wagner uprising – Report

When the Kremlin announced that the mercenary had agreed to leave Russia for Belarus in a deal reportedly mediated by Belarus’ president Alexander Lukashenko, the armed uprising led by Yevgeny Prigozhin, the bombastic head of the private paramilitary group Wagner, appeared to come to an abrupt end on Saturday.

The crisis started when Prigozhin launched a fresh tirade against the Russian military on Friday before seizing military installations in the southern Russian cities of Rostov-on-Don and Voronezh, throwing Russia into fresh unrest as President Vladimir Putin faces the biggest challenge to his authority in decades.

Putin referred to Wagner’s conduct as “treason” and pledged to put an end to those who were driving the “armed uprising.”

Some of Prigozhin’s forces began marching towards Moscow on Saturday before he published an audio recording claiming he was turning them around to “avoid bloodshed” in an apparently de-escalation of the rebellion.

Here’s what you need to know.

The dramatic turn of events began Friday when Prigozhin openly accused Russia’s military of attacking a Wagner camp and killing a “huge amount” of his men. He vowed to retaliate with force, insinuating that his forces would “destroy” any resistance, including roadblocks and aircraft.

“There are 25,000 of us and we are going to find out why there is such chaos in the country,” he said.

Prigozhin later rowed back on his threat, saying his criticism of the Russian military leadership was a “march of justice” and not a coup – but by that point he appeared to have already crossed a line with the Kremlin.

The crisis then deepened as Prigozhin declared his fighters had entered Russia’s Rostov region and occupied key military installations within its capital. That city, Rostov-on-Don, is the headquarters for Russia’s southern military command and home to some one million people.

Prigozhin released a video saying his forces would blockade Rostov-on-Don unless Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu and Russia’s top general, Valery Gerasimov, come to meet him.

Amid the rebellion, Dmitry Medvedev, the deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council, described developments in Russia as “a staged coup d’état,” according to Russian state media RIA Novosti.

Prigozhin has spent months railing against Shoigu and Gerasimov, who he blames for Moscow’s faltering invasion of Ukraine.

Hours later Putin made an address to the nation that illustrated the depth of the crisis he now confronts.

“Those who carry deliberately on a path of treason, preparing an armed rebellion when you were preparing terrorist attacks, will be punished,” Putin said.

He said “any internal turmoil is a deadly threat to our statehood for us as a nation; it is a blow to Russia for our people and our actions to protect our homeland. Such a threat will face a severe response.”

But Prigozhin responded, saying on Telegram that the president is “deeply mistaken.” He said his fighters are “patriots of our Motherland” and promised: “No one is going to turn themselves in at the request of the president, the FSB or anyone else.” That marked a more direct threat to Putin than Prigozhin had typically deployed in the past.

Russia’s Defense Ministry earlier denied attacking Wagner’s troops, calling the claim “informational propaganda.”

And the Federal Security Service (FSB), Russia’s internal security force, also opened a criminal case against Prighozhin, accusing him of calling for “an armed rebellion.”

“Prigozhin’s statements and actions are in fact calls for the start of an armed civil conflict on the territory of the Russian Federation and are a stab in the back of Russian servicemen fighting pro-fascist Ukrainian forces,” an FSB statement said, calling for Wagner fighters to detain their leader.

Russian officials meanwhile appeared to take no chances with security measures stepping up in Moscow, declaring Monday a non-workday and imposing a counter-terrorism regime to strengthen security, according to Russian state media and officials.

Russian security forces in body armor and equipped with automatic weapons took up a position near a highway linking Moscow with southern Russia, according to photos published Saturday by the Russian business newspaper Vedomosti.

Meanwhile, in region of Voronezh, there was an apparent clash between Wagner units and Russian forces, damaging a number of cars.

But the escalating situation took a pause Saturday when Prigozhin claimed he was turning his forces around from their march to Moscow.

“We turning our columns around and going back in the other direction toward our field camps, in accordance with the plan,” he said in a message on Telegram.

The announcement comes as the Belarusian government claimed President Lukashenko had reached a deal with the Wagner boss to halt the march of his forces on Moscow. CNN has reached out to Prigozhin’s office for comment.

Prigozhin has known Putin since the 1990s. He became a wealthy oligarch by winning lucrative catering contracts with the Kremlin, earning him the moniker “Putin’s chef”.

His transformation into a brutal warlord came in the aftermath of the 2014 Russian-backed separatist movements in the Donbas in eastern Ukraine.

Prigozhin founded Wagner to be a shadowy mercenary outfit that fought both in eastern Ukraine and, increasingly, for Russian-backed causes around the world.

CNN has tracked Wagner mercenaries in the Central African Republic, Sudan, Libya, Mozambique, Ukraine and Syria. Over the years they have developed a particularly gruesome reputation and have been linked to various human rights abuses.

Prigozhin’s political star rocketed in Russia after Moscow’s full invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

While many regular Russian troops saw setbacks on the battlefield, Wagner fighters seemed to be the only ones capable of delivering tangible progress.

Known for its disregard for the lives of its own soldiers, the Wagner group’s brutal and often lawless tactics are believed to have resulted in high numbers of casualties, as new recruits are sent into battle with little formal training – a process described by retired United States Lt. Gen. Mark Hertling as “like feeding meat to a meat grinder.”

Prigozhin has used social media to lobby for what he wants and often feuded with Russia’s military leadership, casting himself as competent and ruthless in contrast to the military establishment.

His disagreements with Russia’s top brass exploded into the public domain during the grim and relentless battle for Bakhmut during which he repeatedly accused the military leadership of failing to supply his troops with enough ammunition.

In one particularly grim video from early May, Prigozhin stood next to a pile of dead Wagner fighters and took aim specifically at Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and chief of the Russian armed forces Gen. Valery Gerasimov.

“The blood is still fresh,” he says, pointing to the bodies behind him. “They came here as volunteers and are dying so you can sit like fat cats in your luxury offices.”

Putin presides over what is often described as a court system, where infighting and competition among elites is in fact encouraged to produce results, as long as the “vertical of power” remains loyal to and answers to the head of state.

But Prigozhin’s increasingly outrageous outbursts have sparked speculation in recent weeks that even he could be going too far.

Putin’s national address sets up a direct confrontation at the heart of Russia’s establishment at a time when Ukraine is hoping to make advances during its own summer offensive.

Retired colonel on how Ukraine could seize on the chaos in Russia

Putin likened what he now faces to the Russian Revolution in 1917, when the Bolsheviks overthrew Tsar Nicholas II of Russia in the midst of World War One, plunging the country into civil war and eventually paving the way for the creation of the Soviet Union.

“This was the same kind of blow that Russia felt in 1917, when the country entered World War I, but had victory stolen from it,” Putin said.

“Intrigues, squabbles, politicking behind the backs of the army and the people turned out to be the greatest shock, the destruction of the army, the collapse of the state, the loss of vast territories, and in the end, the tragedy and civil war. Russians killed Russians, brothers killed brothers.”

Steve Hall, a former career CIA officer and now CNN contributor, said Prigozhin has placed himself in a hugely precarious position and knows full well what he faces.

Prigozhin “knows precisely what his risk is … which is kind of interesting when you think about it, because that means he must have calculated that he can pull this off … A guy like Prigozhin knows what the risks are and knows that if it doesn’t go well for him, it’s gonna go really badly,” he added.

In a conference call with reporters Saturday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said an agreement was struck with Prigozhin.

“You will ask me what will happen to Prigozhin personally?” Peskov said. “The criminal case will be dropped against him. He himself will go to Belarus.” Peskov added that the Kremlin was unaware of the mercenary’s current whereabouts.

Videos, authenticated and geolocated by CNN, also showed Prigozhin and Wagner forces withdrawing from their positions at Russian military headquarters in Rostov-on-Don.

In the video, Prigozhin is seen sitting in the backseat of a vehicle. Crowds cheer and the vehicle comes to a stop as an individual approaches it and shakes Prigozhin’s hand.

Meanwhile the open disunity within Russia’s armed forces has been greeted with glee and much schadenfreude in Kyiv.

Malcolm Davis, a senior analyst at the Australian Strategic Policy Institute, said Ukraine will be keen to exploit the turmoil, especially if Moscow is forced to move troops from the frontline.

“Obviously they need to see what is actually happening with the disposition of Russian forces along their defensive lines,” he told CNN.

“If Russian forces at those locations are being withdrawn to fight Wagner – to defeat what is certainly an insurrection at the moment but could be which could become a civil war down the track – then potentially you will see the Ukrainians opening up new opportunities, identifying gaps in the Russian lines that they can push through and exploit.”

“If gaps open up, then they need to be ready to exploit those gaps,” he added.

That is what appeared to have happened. Ukrainian forces launched simultaneous counteroffensives in multiple directions, according to Ukraine’s Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Maliar. She said that “there is progress in all directions” without giving any further detail.

Ukrainian presidential adviser Mykhailo Podolyak said Prigozhin’s escalation “almost nullified” Putin and criticized Prigozhin for “suddenly” turning his forces around. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, in his nightly address, claimed Putin is “very afraid,” saying that the Russian president is “probably hiding somewhere, not showing himself.”

Russian aircraft attack Syria, leaving nine dead and numerous injured

Russian fighter planes blasted a city in Syria’s rebel-held Idlib region, killing nine civilians and injuring scores more, according to the local White Helmets emergency response organisation.

The Jisr al-Shughur city attack on Sunday caused damage to a fruit and vegetable market. CNN quoted a witness as saying that the “missile had so much pressure and the sharpness hit the crowded market.”

Ahmad Rahhal, a 26-year-old local journalist, said he arrived at the scene 30 minutes after the strike. “I saw tomato waggons on the ground and blood on the carpet.”

The White Helmets said this was the second day of airstrikes in the area, coming ahead of the Muslim festival, Eid al-Adha, in the Muslim-majority country. The past four days have also seen artillery fire, the civil defense added.

Sunday’s strike in Jisr al-Shughur stands as the most fatal in northwestern Syria so far in 2023.

Russian military flights over the country have shown marked aggression in the past few months.

In April, Russian pilots attempted to “dogfight” US jets over Syria, the US said. In military aviation, dogfighting is engaging in aerial combat, often at relatively close ranges.

Earlier this month, the US deployed F-22 fighter jets to the Middle East over concerns about “unsafe and unprofessional behavior” by Russian aircraft.

  • Groundwater pumping by humans has caused the Earth’s axis to tilt – New study

Groundwater pumping by humans has caused the Earth’s axis to tilt – New study

A new study found that the inexhaustible human hunger for groundwater has drained so much water from underground reservoirs that it is altering the tilt of the Earth.

When it doesn’t rain much, groundwater assists with crop irrigation and provides drinking water for humans, livestock, and plants. The axis on which our globe rotates has been moved, however, according to recent research, tilting it over to the east at a rate of around 1.7 inches (4.3 centimetres) each year as a result of chronic groundwater extraction over a period of more than 10 years.

According to a study published on June 15 in the journal Geophysical Research Letters, this shift is so noticeable that it can even be seen on the surface of the Earth. It causes the sea level to increase globally.

“Earth’s rotational pole actually changes a lot,” said lead study author Ki-Weon Seo, a professor in the department of Earth science education at Seoul National University in South Korea, in a news release. “Our study shows that among climate-related causes, the redistribution of groundwater actually has the largest impact on the drift of the rotational pole.”

You might not be able to feel Earth’s rotation, but it’s spinning on a north-south axis at a rate of about 1,000 miles per hour (1,609 kilometers per hour).

The ebb and flow of seasonal change is linked to the angle of the planet’s rotational axis, and over geologic time, a wandering axis could affect climate on a global scale, said Surendra Adhikari, a research scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, in the release. Adhikari was not involved in the study.

Earth’s interior is layered with rock and magma surrounding a dense, hot core. But in the outermost rocky layer, there are also vast quantities of water. Below the planet’s surface, rocky reservoirs known as aquifers are estimated to contain over 1,000 times more water than all the surface rivers and lakes in the world.

Between 1993 and 2010, the period examined in the study, humans extracted more than 2,150 gigatons of groundwater from inside Earth, mostly in western North America and northwestern India, according to estimates published in 2010. To put that into perspective, if that amount were poured into the ocean, it would raise global sea levels by about 0.24 inches (6 millimeters).

In 2016, another team of researchers found that drift in Earth’s rotational axis between 2003 and 2015 could be linked to changes in the mass of glaciers and ice sheets, as well as the planet’s reserves of terrestrial liquid water.

In fact, any mass change on Earth, including atmospheric pressure, can affect its axis of rotation, Seo told CNN in an email.

But axis changes caused by atmospheric pressure shifts are periodic, which means that the rotational pole wanders and then returns to its prior position, Seo explained. Seo and his colleagues had questions about long-term changes to the axis — specifically, how groundwater contributed to that phenomenon. It had not been calculated in prior research.

Shifts in Earth’s axis are measured indirectly through radio telescope observations of immobile objects in space — quasars — using them as fixed points of reference. For the new study, scientists took the 2010 data about groundwater extraction and incorporated it into computer models, alongside observational data about surface ice loss and sea level rise, and estimates of rotational pole changes.

The researchers then evaluated sea level variations “using the groundwater mass change from the model,” to pinpoint how much of the axis shift was caused by groundwater pumping alone, Seo said.

The redistribution of groundwater tilted Earth’s rotational axis east by more than 31 inches (78.7 centimeters) in just under two decades, according to the models. The most notable driver of long-term variations in the rotational axis was already known to be mantle flow — the movement of molten rock in the layer between Earth’s crust and outer core. The new modeling reveals that groundwater extraction is the second most significant factor, Seo said.

“This is a nice contribution and an important documentation,” Adhikari said. “They’ve quantified the role of groundwater pumping on polar motion, and it’s pretty significant.”

Future models can use observations on Earth’s rotation to illuminate the past, Seo added. “The data is available since the late 19th century,” he said. With that information, scientists can peer back in time and trace changes in planetary systems as the climate warmed over the last 100 years.

Groundwater pumping can be a lifeline, particularly in parts of the world that are heavily affected by drought caused by climate change. But subterranean reserves of liquid water are finite; once drained, they are slow to replenish.

And groundwater extraction doesn’t merely deplete a valuable resource; the new findings demonstrate that this activity has unintended global consequences.

“We have affected Earth systems in various ways,” Seo said. “People need to be aware of that.”

  • Human ancestors slaughtered one another for reasons other than ceremonial – New study

Human ancestors slaughtered one another for reasons other than ceremonial – New study

A new study suggests that early human ancestors killed and maybe ate one another 1.45 million years ago based on nine cut marks found on a fossilised shin bone.

Briana Pobiner, a paleoanthropologist at the National Museum of Natural History in Washington, DC, discovered the fossilised tibia in the collection of the Nairobi National Museum of the National Museums of Kenya.

Pobiner discovered cuts that appeared to have been created by stone tools while examining the collection in search of bite marks from extinct creatures that may have preyed on early hominins.

“These cut marks look very similar to what I’ve seen on animal fossils that were being processed for consumption,” Pobiner said in a news release.

“It seems most likely that the meat from this leg was eaten and that it was eaten for nutrition as opposed to for a ritual.”

Study coauthor Michael Pante, a paleoanthropologist at Colorado State University, created 3D models based on molds of marks on the bone. He compared the shape of the cuts with an existing database of 898 individual tooth, butchery and trample marks created during controlled experiments.

Pobiner had not told him she thought the cut marks were made by stone tools, but his analysis came to the same conclusion.

The cut marks are all oriented in the same direction, making it possible that a hand wielding a stone tool could have made the marks one after another without changing grip.

It’s not clear what species of ancient hominin the shin bone belonged to — because a leg bone doesn’t offer as much taxonomic information as a cranium or jawbone. The fossilized tibia was initially identified as Australopithecus boisei and then in 1990 as Homo erectus.

The emergence of sophisticated stone tools is linked with the emergence of the Homo genus that includes our own species, Homo sapiens, but more recent research has suggested that other ancient hominins may have used stone tools even earlier.

By themselves, the cuts do not definitively prove that the ancient human relative who inflicted the damage also made a meal out of the leg, but Pobiner said it was possible. The marks are located where a calf muscle would have been attached to the bone — a good place to cut if the aim was to remove flesh.

“The information we have tells us that hominins were likely eating other hominins at least 1.45 million years ago,” Pobiner said.

“There are numerous other examples of species from the human evolutionary tree consuming each other for nutrition, but this fossil suggests that our species’ relatives were eating each other to survive further into the past than we recognized.”

Silvia Bello, a researcher in human origins at London’s Natural History Museum, said that cannibalism might have been more common in the past than previously thought, noting that evidence for the behavior had also been found at archaeological sites associated with Neanderthals and early modern humans.

For example, Neanderthals living 100,000 years ago in what’s now France practiced cannibalism, perhaps because a warmer climate made food harder to come by.

The latest study, published Monday in the journal Scientific Reports, is “significant because this new find suggests that cannibalism might have been practiced, at least occasionally, a long way back in our ancestral history,” said Bello, who was not involved in the research.

Her colleague Chris Stringer, research leader in human origins at London’s Natural History Museum, said the shin bone was probably not the oldest known example of human relatives butchering one another. He said cut marks were reported on the cheek bone of ahominin fossil found in Sterkfontein, South Africa, in 2000 that could be about 2 million years old. Pobiner, however, said the source of the cut marks in that case was disputed.

“This new evidence looks quite convincing and adds to the evidence for cannibalism in very early, as well as the considerable evidence from later, humans,” said Stringer.

  • Tensions intensifies as Sierra Leone gets ready for crucial elections

Tensions intensifies as Sierra Leone gets ready for crucial elections

In the midst of rising unhappiness and demands for change from its citizenry, Sierra Leone is preparing for Saturday’s vital presidential elections.

Since the horrific civil war that raged through the nation’s history concluded 21 years ago, there have been five elections.

Devastating illnesses like the Covid pandemic and Ebola in 2014 have also hit Sierra Leone.

Samura Kamara, the leader of the opposition “All People Congress” (APC) party, is one of the twelve candidates running against Maada Bio, 59, in the general election.

Kamara, a former cabinet minister, 72, is facing trial on corruption charges which he denies. The case has been adjourned until after the general election.

The mood in the country is tense as the country prepares for the high-stakes elections.

Earlier in the week, police officers fired rubber bullets and teargas at supporters of the opposition party, All People’s Congress (APC), during a protest in the capital Freetown calling for the Chief electoral Commissioner, Mohamed Konneh, to step down after allegations of electoral fraud.

The United Kingdom, the United States, Ireland, Germany, France, and the European Union issued a joint statement urging all parties to remain peaceful.

Sierra Leoneans are concerned about several issues, including economic management, food shortages, healthcare services, infrastructure development, and education.

Many citizens say they are frustrated with high inflation rates and unemployment levels, as well as political violence and corruption.

” …We are not seeing any prospect that the prices are coming down because the dollar inflation is very high. Everything is very high,” said Aminata Fanta Koroma, an APC party member.

While Samura supporter Kadira Rodhe Kamara said: “We are tired with the austerity, we’re tired with the problems, the killings, the brutality, tribalism, nepotism, all kinds of things. You know, no democracy, no freedom of speech. The people are tired.”

President Bio has promised to tackle these problems by feeding the nation and creating half a million jobs for young people if re-elected.

However, Sierra Leoneans remain uncertain about their future as the country remains one of the poorest in the world despite its abundant diamond resources and other minerals.

The illicit trade in these gems, commonly referred to as “blood diamonds” due to their association with conflict financing, exacerbated the civil war.

Sierra Leone has a population of around 8.8 million, but less than half (3.3 million) are registered to vote in this election.

The country has been facing a number of issues, including a soaring cost of living and massive unemployment.

Inflation rates in April were recorded at around 37% according to the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

The outcome of the elections is expected to depend largely on the younger demographic as people under the age of 35 make up around 60% of the voting-age population.

A significant proportion of this group belongs to the post-war generation, who have grown up in a country grappling with poverty, unemployment, and political instability.

However, Ishmael Beah, a former child soldier and author, turned human rights activist told CNN the youth are not hopeful of change.

“The general mood of the country is it’s not hopeful at all because… the security situation has gotten tense in the way that you have more presence of armed police, armed military that are basically patrolling the streets as if going to an election is also going to war.”

Beah added that the two political parties have not “presented any policies or any ideas of what they are going to do and that are credible. There was no presidential debate to talk about policy,” he said.

There have been concerns of unrest in the run-up to the poll, similar to deadly anti-government protests that broke out last August, over the rising cost of living.

Following August’s protests, President Bio ordered a crackdown as he believed the protests were part of an attempt to overthrow his government.

“This was not a protest against the high cost of living occasioned by the ongoing global economic crisis. The chant of the insurrectionists was for a violent overthrow of the democratically elected government,” he said at the time.

To be declared winner, a presidential candidate must secure 55 percent of the total votes. If this is not achieved in the first round of voting, a run-off election will be held between the two candidates with the highest votes — as was the case in the 2018 election.

President of Sierra Leone pulls ahead in the heated election contest

Based on the preliminary results, Maada Bio, the president of Sierra Leone, has gained the lead in the race for the position.

The Sierra Leonean Electoral Commission (ECSL) stated that it has so far counted roughly 60% of the total votes and anticipated announcing a winner within the following two days.

President Bio of the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP), who is 59 years old, and Samura Kamara, the leader of the opposition All People’s Congress (APC) party, who is 72 years old, are widely regarded as the two front-runners in the election.

Bio has so far polled more than a million votes and currently leads Kamara with over 200,000 votes, according to ECSL.

Earlier, Bio’s SLPP party said it was “greatly anticipating a landslide victory” following an internal review of its performance in the elections.

To be declared winner, a presidential candidate must secure 55% of the total votes. If this is not achieved in the first round of voting, a run-off election will be held between the two candidates with the highest votes. Kamara

The electoral commission described the weekend poll as relatively peaceful but acknowledged pockets of violence and delays in polling in some areas.

On Sunday, Kamara’s APC party accused the country’s security forces of laying siege to its head office in the capital Freetown, and firing live rounds into the property while it held a press conference after the polls.

In a series of tweets, Kamara said his party’s headquarters had been surrounded by government forces and live bullets had been fired at the door of his private office.

“This is an assassination attempt,” he added.

Another opposition leader, Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr, who is seeking reelection as the mayor of Freetown, posted photos from inside the surrounded building and wrote: “I am in the APC Party office and we are under fire. It is tear gas and what sounds like live rounds. There are about 20 of us on the ground in one office. The shots are still being fired. We need help please!”

The police accused the APC party of carrying out a procession and claiming victory in the polls ahead of an official declaration by the electoral commission, in a statement made available to CNN.

It added that officers were forced to fire teargas canisters when the “situation became unbearable,” but did not include details about whether shots were fired at the APC’s head office.

The statement accused APC party members of “harassing passers-by”, including those thought to be members of the ruling SLPP party and “announcing to the public that they had won the just concluded elections.”

Voting was carried out Saturday under heavy security presence and armored tanks.

Ahead of the polls, police fired rubber bullets and teargas at supporters of the APC, during a demonstration that called for the resignation of Chief electoral Commissioner, Mohamed Konneh, following allegations of electoral fraud.

  • Teenager sentenced to at least 12 years in prison for killing her own baby son

Teenager sentenced to at least 12 years in prison for killing her own baby son

A teen who killed her newborn child after giving birth on her own at her parents’ house, sentenced to at least 12 years in prison.

On March 23, 2019, Paris Mayo, now 19, killed her son Stanley in Ross-on-Wye, Herefordshire, when she was just 15.

After a six-week trial at Worcester Crown Court, she was found guilty of murder by the jury.

According to testimony given in court, Mayo gave birth to the child on her own while her parents were upstairs.

He was left with a fractured skull after she is thought to have placed her foot on his head.

Mayo ‘finished him off’ by stuffing cotton wool balls down his throat, before putting her son’s body in a bin bag and leaving it on the doorstep, then going to bed.

She is said to have sent her brother a text message saying the bag was ‘full of sick’ and asking him to put it in the bin.

But her mother discovered her grandson’s lifeless body the following morning when she looked inside the bloodstained bag, before calling 999, jurors heard.

Mayo sobbed as the sentence was passed and she was led out of the dock.

The judge, Mr Justice Garnham, told Mayo: ‘As difficult as your circumstances may have been, killing your baby son was a truly dreadful thing to do.

‘A human being is probably never more vulnerable that at the time of their birth,’ he said.

The judge added: ‘You did nothing to prepare yourself for giving birth. You were frightened and traumatised by this event.

‘I have no doubt it was painful and overwhelming for you. It seems you did not cry out, so anxious were you not to disturb your parents upstairs.

‘As soon as Stanley was born, you decided he could not live and you assaulted him about the head.

‘How you did this is not clear, but I suspect you crushed his head, probably beneath your foot.

‘It certainly caused him serious damage, but that assault did not kill Stanley.

‘He remained alive. You decided you had to finish Stanley off by stuffing cotton wool balls into his throat.

“As difficult as your circumstances may have been, killing your baby son was a truly dreadful thing to do.’

Mayo tried to cover up both her pregnancy and birth – claiming she didn’t know she was expecting.

Stanley was born full term weighing 7lb 12oz and is said to have lived for at least two hours.

Defending Mayo, Bernard Richmond KC described her as ‘immature’ and a ‘pathetic and vulnerable individual’.

‘When faced with a decision she had to make, she did not face up to it.

‘By the time she had to, the decision she made was woefully, woefully wrong.’

Mayo’s mother could not face seeing her daughter in the dock and her ’emotionally cruel’ father died 10 days after Stanley was born, the court heard.

Mr Richmond added: ‘It has been said she killed him too, and that adds to the burden upon her.

‘This will, in every sense of the word, be a life sentence. It will be a lonely, isolating and frightening time for her.’

Mayo must serve at least 12 years behind bars before she is eligible for parole.

In a statement after the sentencing, the Crown Prosecution Service said Stanley’s ‘short life was filled with pain and suffering when he should have been nurtured and loved’.

A spokesperson said: ‘The prosecution built a case based on medical evidence which proved that Paris Mayo’s actions were deliberate, she chose to hide her pregnancy, give birth alone and kill her baby, then hide his body despite accepting that she had a family who would have supported her.

‘Although Paris Mayo has been sentenced today, nothing can bring back poor Stanley who tragically lost his life before it even got a chance to begin.’

Nicola Bulley: Screams heard early morning, mother from Lancashire disappeared – live update

The inquest investigating her death has heard that Nicola Bulley was not injured right before she entered the River Wyre but perished in “seconds” when she did.

In January, the mother-of-two is believed to have vanished near St Michael’s on Wyre, Lancashire, and two witnesses have each reported hearing “screams” in the area.

After an extensive week-long search, the body of Nicola was discovered a mile downstream with her phone still linked to a work Teams call on a bench beside the lake.

Security at the inquest venue, Preston County Hall, was beefed up amid fears of infiltration by conspiracy theorists – while the coroner warned anyone who disrupts proceedings would face ‘prison or a fine’.

Diving experts and doctors have explained what would have happened to Nicola when she entered the cold river water, though the inquest has yet to hear evidence on how she ended up there.

Meanwhile, the last people to see her alive described Nicola acting like ‘her normal self’ – though the inquest also heard she may have been ‘struggling’ inside.

In his initial remarks following the march on Moscow, US President Joe Biden claimed that the US and its allies had “nothing” to do with the Wagner uprising against Russia.

On Monday, Biden addressed the weekend coup attempt by the Wagner Group, which saw it capture control of a significant Russian city and briefly advance on Moscow.

‘They agreed with me that we had to make sure we gave (Russian President Vladimir) Putin no excuse – let me emphasize, we gave Putin no excuse – to blame this on the West or to blame this on NATO’.

Biden added: ‘We made clear that we were not involved. We had nothing to do with it. This was part of a struggle within the Russian system.’

The mercenary group revolted on Friday, with its found Yevgeny Prigozhin saying he intended to punish defence minister Sergei Shoigu and army chief Valery Gerasimov for launching rockets at his troops. The uprising was the biggest threat to Putin in more than two decades.

After a day of conflict, Prigozhin agreed to exile in Belarus.

Still, Biden said the ‘ultimate outcome’ of the insurrection remains to be seen.

‘I directed my national security team to monitor closely and report to me hour by hour,’ he said. ‘I instructed them to prepare for a range of scenarios.’

Putin called the Wagner rebellion ‘treason’. In an unscheduled national address on Monday, the Russian president reiterated his offer of amnesty to insurrectionists but not to Prigozhin.

Biden on remained silent over the weekend on the uprising. The US president spoke with European allies by phone on Saturday and then traveled to Camp David along with his national security adviser Jake Sullivan.

US intelligence officials gathered detailed information of Prigozhin’s plans leading up to the rebellion including how he planned to advance, sources told CNN on Monday. That intelligence was reportedly only shared with some allies, including British officials, and not to NATO.

Chef paralysed after being shot four times by a diner

A customer who allegedly shot a chef four times because the chef’s kebab wasn’t cooked to his standards has been sentenced to 12 years in prison.

On April 10, 2022, in the CasaRust restaurant near the bustling Piazza della Rinascita in Pescara, Italy, Federico Pecorale, 30, fatally shot Yelfry Rosado Guzman, 23.

Yelfry was shot in the back by three bullets, one of which incapacitated him.

Around 1:15 pm, video shows the father of one falling to the ground as a scared coworker watches.

After shooting at him again, Pecorale left and headed back to his hotel in Piazza Santa Caterina to grab his luggage.

He fled to his grandparents’ home in Gissi before heading north in a taxi, igniting a manhunt involving city police as well as forces from nearby towns Ferno, Ancona and Pesaro and traffic police from Abruzzo and Marche.

Officers cornered Pecorale at the Metauro service area on the A14 motorway in Pesaro, 120 miles north of Pescara.

La Repubblica reported at the time that Percorale was ‘calm and stern’ when approached by police, who found an automatic pistol on him.

He had been staying in Pescara for 20 days and had eaten at the ristobar CasaRustí the day before the shooting.

Pescara Court heard last week how Pecorale fired at Yelfry because the chef allegedly undercooked his arrosticini – skewers made from mutton or lamb from the Abruzzo region.

Though, some media reports say that it was down to his order taking too long to be prepared.

But Pecorale has never provided a reason why he shot Yelfry, according to the Italian news network Il Centro.

His lawyer, Florenzo Coletti, told local media at the time of the shooting that his client carried the automatic pistol with him as people routinely ‘mock’ his incompetence.

Pecorale suffered from serious brain injuries after being involved in a car accident when he was 19, La Repubblica said, citing sources close to the investigation.

A mental health evaluation concluded that the defendant’s capacity to understand and make decisions was partially diminished.

On June 22, the Italian press reported that Judge Francesco Marino sentenced Pecorale to seven years in prison and five years in a mental health facility.

Pecorale, from Montesilvano in the Abruzzo region, was also ordered the pay the victim €200,000 (£171,000).

Though, this was far less than the €350,000 (£300,0000) requested by Guzman’s lawyer, Piero Bisceglie.

Briton, 29, dies after becoming unconscious on his way to Caribbean with his mother

It has been claimed that a British man passed away after becoming unconscious on a flight to a Caribbean island with his mother.

On his way to Antigua last Thursday, the 29-year-old reportedly became “unresponsive.”

At VC Bird International Airport, the Boeing 777 British Airways jet was forced to land, and the passenger was taken immediately to the hospital.

He was declared dead at 6:37 p.m. despite emergency department doctors’ best efforts.

Doctors called the police but investigators reportedly found ‘no marks of violence on the body’ and do not suspect any foul play.

The man’s 65-year-old mum is believed to have told officers her son suffered from several serious illnesses, such as hypotension, muscular dystrophy and ulcerative colitis.

She said his conditions had led him to be hospitalised multiple times, including in the nearby dual-island nation of St. Kitts and Nevis.

He had reportedly spent five days in intensive care in the country, where he was diagnosed with sepsis and blood poisoning.

The man was treated with IV fluid, antibiotics and insulin but discharged himself from hospital.

This is something he has done repeatedly in the past, police were told.

The mum said her son was struggling with dehydration and was losing weight quickly before he died.

Officials have granted the family permission for his body to be moved to a funeral home in London.

British Airways has confirmed to The Sun that there was a ‘medical emergency’. Metro.co.uk has contacted the airline for any further information.

Antigua police said in a statement: ‘We are investigating this incident like we investigate all incidents of this nature.

‘However, foul play is not suspected at this stage and we will be working with the family and will be cooperating with them fully.

‘We offer our condolences to the mother and the rest of the family.

‘Imagine coming to our beautiful island and ending up like this. It is so sad. Our sympathy is with the family.’

Ukrainian actor attacked and assaulted near Dublin theatre

Following the final performance of the play he was in, an actor from Ukraine was attacked in Dublin near a theatre.

On Saturday, an assault took place near the Abbey Theatre on Eden Quay in the Irish capital against Oleksandr Hrekov, a man in his 20s.

A representative for Abbey said that although he was taken to the hospital right away with “serious” wounds that required stitches, he is “recovering well.”

Gardai are looking into what has been referred to as a “unprovoked, random act of mindless violence” despite the fact that no arrests have yet been made.

Mr Hrekov had travelled to Dublin to perform in a Kyiv theatre company’s production of Brian Friel’s Translations.

Culture minister Catherine Martin has condemned the ‘cowardly attack’, along with other Irish politicians.

She said that the production of Translations was ‘an expression of the solidarity of the Irish people with the people of Ukraine’.

‘I hope Oleksandr makes a full recovery and returns to his craft as soon as possible,’ she wrote on Twitter.

A spokeswoman for the Abbey said: ‘We were honoured to welcome and work with our Ukrainian colleagues from the Lesya Ukrainka National Academic Drama Theatre over the last ten days, showing their production of Brian Friel’s Translations to sold-out houses at the Abbey Theatre.

‘They are a group of incredible and resilient artists – using their art as an act of resistance to speak to their lived experience in a powerful and deeply moving way.

‘A 27-strong theatre company travelled from Kyiv to perform the canonical Irish text, which illuminates the determination of a people to persist and ensure their culture endures in the most difficult of circumstances.

‘Unfortunately, one of the cast was attacked near the Abbey on Saturday evening, after the final performance.

‘This was an unprovoked, random act of mindless violence, that left the cast member needing stitches and treatment in hospital.

‘Both the Abbey Theatre and the Lesya Ukrainka National Academic Drama Theatre condemn this behaviour and stand together against bullying and violence of this nature.

‘The cast member is recovering well and began the journey home to Kyiv with the rest of the company yesterday.’

The spokeswoman added: ‘This incident will not overshadow the joyful and important collaboration between our two theatre companies.

‘This is only the beginning of the Abbey Theatre’s artistic relationship with our friends at the Lesya Ukrainka National Academic Drama Theatre.’

  • Putin asserts the Wagner rebellion was ‘doomed to fail’

Putin asserts the Wagner rebellion was ‘doomed to fail’

In a speech to the country this evening, Russian President Vladimir Putin declared that “any attempt at blackmail is doomed to fail.”

Speaking from the Kremlin, the Russian president promised that those responsible for the weekend’s “criminal activity” would face justice.

In a statement, Putin claimed that the uprising was “criminal activity that is intended to weaken the country” and that the “organisers of this rebellion will be brought to justice.”

In a statement, he said that ‘any kind of blackmail is doomed to failure’ and that the mutiny leaders ‘wanted our society to be fragmented’.

He thanked the Russian public for its ‘support, patriotism and solidarity’ since the rebellion and Belarus’s Lukashenko for a peaceful resolution.

‘Virtually the entirety of Russian society… was united by its responsibility to defend their homeland,’ Putin said.

He also thanked Wagner officials who ‘took the right decision to stop and go back to prevent bloodshed’.

Putin added that most Wagner mercenaries are ‘patriots’ who were ‘used’ by organisers of the rebellion.

The uprising was ‘doomed to fail’ and that ‘its organisers, even though they lost their sense of right and wrong, couldn’t have failed to realise that,’ he continued.

Putin also accused Ukraine of being involved and calls the revolt ‘revenge for their failed counteroffensive’.

It comes after just a few hours earlier Russia claimed to have intercepted two British RAF jets over the Black Sea.

Earlier on Monday, Prigozhin revealed he ordered his fighters to halt their advance on Moscow because he ‘did not want to shed Russian blood’.

Prigozhin broke his silence since the failed military coup at the weekend and posted an 11-minute audio message where he failed to reveal his location – despite being exiled to Belarus.

There are currently unconfirmed reports that Progozhin is currently in Minsk – the capital of Belarus.

He said no-one agreed to sign a contract with the defence ministry and that his mercenary firm was bound to cease existence on July 1.

Prigozhin said: ‘We started our march because of an injustice.’

He claimed the decision to turn around the march on Moscow was because he and his fighters didn’t want to shed Russian blood.

Prigozhin also said it was not his aim to overthrow the Russian government but to demonstrate his anger with the actions of the Ministry of Defence.

The former Wagner leader also repeated his claim that his troops were attacked by Russian soldiers, saying 30 people died with more injured.

The militia revolted on Friday, with Prigozhin saying he wanted to punish defence minister Sergei Shoigu and army chief Valery Gerasimov for targeting his troops with rockets.

He said his troops had advanced 124 miles towards Moscow in the following 24 hours, with the city braced for war.

The uprising posed the biggest threat to Vladimir Putin’s leadership in more than two decades in power.

Putin had vowed to crush the rebellion – calling it a ‘stab in the back’ – and warned anyone involved in the ‘rebellion’ will ‘suffer inevitable punishment’.

The Kremlin denied reports he had fled the capital amid several claiming aircraft linked to the president were spotted flying out as Wagner forces close in.

Prigozhin, whose forces have spearheaded the Russian advance in Ukraine, claimed to have captured the headquarters of Russia’s Southern Military District in Rostov without firing a shot.

It came as Russian media speculated that Mr Shoigu and other military leaders had lost Mr Putin’s confidence and could be replaced.

Before the uprising, Mr Prigozhin had criticised Mr Shoigu and General Staff chief General Valery Gerasimov with expletive-ridden insults for months, accusing them of failing to provide his troops with enough ammunition during the fight for the Ukrainian town of Bakhmut, the war’s longest and bloodiest battle.

Mr Prigozhin’s statement appeared to confirm analysts’ view that the revolt was a move to save Wagner from being dismantled after an order that all private military companies sign contracts with the Defence Ministry by July 1.

He said most of his fighters refused to come under the Defence Ministry’s command, and the force planned to hand over the military equipment it was using in Ukraine on June 30 after pulling out of Ukraine and gathering in the southern Russian city of Rostov-on-Don.

He accused the Defence Ministry of attacking Wagner’s camp, prompting them to move sooner.

  • Police look for mother and new baby after schoolboy discovered placenta

Police look for mother and new baby after schoolboy discovered placenta

Police are looking for a mother and her new baby after a youngster discovered a placenta in a park.

On Wednesday morning, Southampton police discovered what they thought to be a placenta in the Holly Brook Park neighbourhood.

According to police, they can now confirm that early research suggests the placenta is human.

The placenta was reportedly discovered by a 15-year-old kid.

Jamie Clarke, 15, found the remains along with two friends on Wednesday morning on the path.

The Year 9 Upper Shirley High School pupil was on his way to school when he made the discovery before calling police.

Speaking to the Daily Echo, the 15-year-old said: ‘I was going down the path to meet my mate.

‘We saw a football by the bush and went to get it and when we were coming back to the road, that’s when I saw it.

‘At first I thought it was a bit of an animal but when we saw it, it didn’t look like an animal. It just didn’t look like it, it was too big so we decided to call the police.’

He continued: ‘Some of us were standing near the roundabout and making sure there wasn’t anyone taking pictures or seeing it.

‘Other police came, and we showed them and that’s when they said they would take over.’

Southampton Chief Inspector Marcus Kennedy said: ‘Now that we have preliminary findings that indicate this discovery to be a human placenta, we remain increasingly concerned for the welfare of the mother and the child.

‘I understand that this must be a very distressing time for you and that you may be frightened, but we want to make sure you are getting the right help and care, so please get in touch with us.

‘We would also like to speak with anyone who has any concerns about someone who has recently been pregnant, that you think may have been pregnant or may have given birth recently without support.

‘Anyone who contacts us can speak with us in complete confidence. Our absolute priority is to ensure the mother and child receive the assistance they require.

‘Officers will remain in the area of Holly Brook Park for now. If you have any concerns, however insignificant you may believe them to be, please do not hesitate to approach an officer or to make contact with us.’

  • Yvonne Nelson had more reasons to abort the child than Sarkodie – Kelvyn Boy

Yvonne Nelson had more reasons to abort the child than Sarkodie – Kelvyn Boy

Kelvyn Boy, known for his hit song ‘Down flat,’ has shared his opinion on the situation between Sarkodie and Yvonne Nelson. According to Kelvyn Boy, he believes that Yvonne Nelson had more reasons to consider aborting the pregnancy than Sarkodie. It is important to note that this is Kelvyn Boy’s personal perspective on the matter, and others may hold differing opinions. The details and context surrounding the situation between Sarkodie and Yvonne Nelson were not provided, so it is essential to consider multiple viewpoints and gather more information before forming a comprehensive understanding.

He stated that looking at the reasons mentioned by Yvonne Nelson as to why she could not bring forth a child and Sarkodie’s reason being the fact that he was living with the mother back then, then the actress’ reason outweighs that of the singer.

During his engagement on United Showbiz with MzGee, he said: “She had more reasons to get rid of the baby than Sarkodie because she had more reasons which are more important. Because he just lived with his mum, she can give birth and give the child to his mother”.

Kelvyn Boy also stated that sometimes it is all based on the mindset of the woman, adding that if Yvonne Nelson had made up her mind to give birth, Sarkodie could have given the child to his mother to be taken care of.

Citing himself as an example, he said with the children he has, he was not ready to father them but since the mother wanted to have the children, he had no choice but to go with her decision.

“If the lady wants to give birth and it’s her wish to do that, she will definitely keep the pregnancy. I have given birth to three and at a point in time, I wasn’t ready to father some of them but when it happens that way, we just accept it. That is why I said the reasons she listed sound more serious than Sarkodie who said he lived with his mum and hasn’t made it yet in the industry”, he explained.

What Yvonne Nelson said about the pregnancy she aborted in 2010.

In her memoir, Yvonne Nelson said Sarkodie was not ready for a baby at the time, adding that what existed between them was not a serious relationship.

“Sarkodie was a budding musician with the potential to become one of the biggest artists in Ghana and beyond. At the time, however, the future looked uncertain, and his way through the maze of life still appeared too foggy to predict. Success was not guaranteed. He was still living with his mother and was not ready to carry a burden while he was being carried by his mother.

“The first thing that hit me when he said no to keeping the pregnancy was my own life. I had grown up without a father in my life. I had often been reminded of how I had been borne by mistake.

“I was still wondering if the man whose name I bore was my father. How was I going to bring another human being into this world to live like me, someone whose father would reject him or her as Mr. Nelson had rejected me? If there was a way to spare someone else the trauma I was contending with, why would I reject that option, especially when I was not,” Yvonne Nelson said in her book.

  • Ola Micheal criticizes Yvonne Nelson over memoir

Ola Micheal criticizes Yvonne Nelson over memoir

Ghanaian film producer and presenter, Ola Michael, has expressed his opinion that Yvonne Nelson was not truthful in her book titled ‘I Am Not Yvonne Nelson’. According to Ola Michael, he believes that Yvonne Nelson portrayed a lack of honesty or accuracy in her book. However, the specific details or reasons behind his assertion were not provided. It’s important to note that this is Ola Michael’s personal opinion, and others may have different perspectives on the matter.

Since the actress made some revelations in her book which included her relationship with Sarkodie, her mother’s unwillingness to disclose her real father to her, and other failed relationships she had been into, a number of Ghanaians shared varied opinions about her memoir.

Some criticized her for letting the world know her secrets while others applauded her for taking such a bold step thus one of the Ghanaians who shared their views on Yvonne Nelson’s book was Ola Michael.

Appearing as a guest on UTV’s United Showbiz hosted by MzGee, the producer mentioned that the actress was not honest in her memoir. This is because he thinks the actress was biased, that is, among those that hurt her, she mentioned some names and omitted others.

“With that particular honesty bit, you should be truthful so that your readers would be able to detect the honesty from your book but don’t be selective with the things you deal with and try and make some people look a bit uncomfortable but with others, you are afraid to mention their names because you’re in business with them”, he said.

According to Ola Michael, one part of the story he thinks Yvonne Nelson was not honest was when she said her mother once told her she regretted giving birth to her.

He further stated it could be that Yvonne Nelson did something unpleasant which pushed her mother to say that to her.

“We haven’t spoken about her mother yet but amongst the part where I feel she could have been a bit honest was to have given us a vivid detail of really what she did to make her mother say she regretted giving birth to her. Was I a spoilt child? What will a child do to her mother to make her mother say that to her?”, he stated.

In the book, Yvonne Nelson narrated circumstances that led to her decision to abort her pregnancy with rapper Sarkodie in 2010. That account was questioned by Ola who could not fathom why the actress would make it seem as though Sarkodie was the problem.

“When she narrated what led to Sarkodie’s decision to abort the child. After that, when she came to the point where she was talking about film producers and their ban, in that chapter, she said at that time she was in her final year, she was banned by film producers, and on top of it, she was pregnant. This is how she concluded; she was not ready to have another life to take care of”, he explained.

  • Raphaelina Naana Asare crowned Miss Teen Tourism Ghana 2023

Raphaelina Naana Asare crowned Miss Teen Tourism Ghana 2023

In a spectacular display of elegance, talent, intelligence, and cultural pride, Raphaelina Naana Asare, aged 16, emerged as the winner of the Miss Teen Tourism Ghana 2023 pageant. The prestigious event took place at the La Palm Royal Beach Hotel on Saturday, June 24. Raphaelina’s remarkable performance and embodiment of the pageant’s values led to her well-deserved victory, earning her the crown. Her win signifies not only her personal achievement but also her representation of the vibrant and diverse youth in Ghana.

The journey to the crown was a riveting one, as the four finalists embarked on a series of engaging activities, including exams, essays, captivating presentations, and discussions encompassing topics such as tourism, arts, and culture.

Organised by Platinum Networks, the event captivated attendees with its splendor and showcased the incredible potential of teenagers whose quest to impress the distinguished panel of judges, win the coveted crown, and earn the bragging right, among others soared.

The distinguished panel of judges, comprising esteemed professionals from various fields, faced the challenging task of selecting a winner from the exceptional group of finalists. Mrs. Mawuena Trebarh, a communications strategist; Nana Yaa Serwaa Sarpong, a media consultant; Kofi Kakra Kusi, Deputy Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Tourism Authority; Kofi Duah, an arts and entertainment journalist with Graphic Showbiz; Giesella, a model and beauty queen; Sefa, a talented musician; and Calista Amoateng, the reigning Miss Teen Tourism World 2022, brought their expertise to bear in this momentous decision.

After hours of engagement, Raphaelina emerged winner of the competition. Petra Ama Agyeiwaa Kumi emerged 1st runner up with the title Miss Teen Tourism Earth Ghana 2023, while Junia Del and Keziah Barnes had the titles Miss Teen Tourism International Ghana 2023 and Miss Teen Tourism Globe 2023 for being 2nd and 3rd runner ups respectively.

All four will participate in Miss Teen Tourism World 2023 as Raphaelina leads Team Ghana for the international pageant.

Stacy Amoateng, the Chief Executive Officer of Platinum Networks, expressed gratitude to parents for being with their wards throughout the contest and encouraged the candidates to put in more effort to ensure that Ghana retains the title.

“Your mothers are proud of you so kindly move on and make them proud. If the crown stays in Ghana, we’ll all be happy but the crown will be in your house, so, make your parents proud and make us proud…” she mentioned while explaining the rationale behind the decision to present more than one candidate.

“Last year when we went to Malina, South Africa actually came with five candidates and that was strategic because, at the stage, they actually give out 6 crowns and South Africa went home with two of those titles. We went with one candidate and we brought the ultimate title,” she said.

“In collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture and the Ghana Tourism Authority, we have decided to have an agenda which is ‘operation host and win’. We don’t want the crown to leave Ghana; we are learning from South Africa; we are presenting more than one candidate,” Mrs Amoateng added.

Speaking to the media after the event, Raphaelina expressed optimism about winning the title, stressing her inflexible resolve to work towards achieving the aim.

“I will be grooming myself more and present the very best of myself,” Raphaelina noted.

Miss Teen Tourism World 2023 will be hosted by Ghana from the 1st to the 20th of August.

  • 4 things to expect when you date a broke guy

4 things to expect when you date a broke guy

Being broke and being in love does not necessarily have to be a negative situation. While some people may believe that dating someone who is financially struggling is a deal-breaker, it’s important to recognize that there are individuals who don’t mind being in a relationship with someone who is financially challenged.

Love and relationships are complex, and they involve more than just financial stability. Some people prioritize emotional connection, compatibility, and shared values over material wealth. They believe in supporting and uplifting their partner, regardless of their financial situation.

That he does not have a job at the moment or that he’s down on his luck does not disqualify him from finding love; and if you find yourself falling for a guy like this, here are things you need to know:

    Be certain

You cannot go into this kind of relationship based on half-baked convictions. Hell no.

You need to be pretty sure that this is what you want, and that you are prepared for whatever comes out of it.

People – friends and family – will question your decision to do this and if your stand isn’t solid enough, you might waver.

You also need to be reasonably sure of the kind of guy you’re about to date.

Frankly, while it is admirable that you don’t care about his financial status at the moment, you still need to be sure of his drive and desire to not be broke for too long.

What’s his attitude towards getting his finances right?

It’d be catastrophic to say you love someone who is broke now and sits on his behind without plan and effort to break free from his present situation.

    There’ll be inconveniences

There’ll be that, and there’ll also be sacrifices.

You know those things that your former boyfriend used to do because he could afford it?

Sorry, this new guy won’t be able to.

You know those great, cute gifts your friends get from their boyfriends and post on Instagram?

Sorry, ma’am, you might not be able to post them for a while.

And hey, you might also have to share some of your salary with him while he’s still waiting to find his feet.

    It comes with the territory.

The sex is (always) on point

Ok. It’s not like there is empirical evidence or some stat to back up this assertion, but word on the streets support it.

It is believed that broke guys somehow have mad sex skills and often try to make up for their financial weakness with sexual prowess.

It could end in disaster when things get better

I’m sorry to be the bearer of bad news but the fact that you stood by a guy when he has nothing is not assurance that your love will be forever.

It’s cruel and sad, but that’s how it is.

You could run all the supportive girlfriend scheme, you could be loyal and faithful and prayerful and you could even hand him your ATM card and he’ll still do you dirty when he hits it big.

See, some guys don’t even wait to hammer before they start to misbehave. You’ll be funding him, and he’ll be using your own money to cheat on you.

This is the kind of stuff that happens, guys.

Let’s just hope it doesn’t happen to you.

Kwaku Manu opens up about his divorce

Kumawood actor Kwaku Manu has recently shared his experiences and opened up about the difficulties he has encountered in both his personal and professional life. With candor, he has discussed the challenges he has faced, offering insight into the hurdles he has had to overcome.

By sharing his story, Kwaku Manu aims to provide a glimpse into the realities of his journey and perhaps inspire others who may be facing similar struggles.

In a video shared by YouTuber Hello Frank, he revealed that he has been dealing with backbiting, bad experiences in the movie industry, and the loss of friendships.

“For the past seven years, it has been me, my children, my family, and no friends. As we speak now, there is no one I can call a friend,” Manu expressed.

He explained that, due to negative experiences and betrayals, he has chosen to distance himself from others.

He now prefers to spend most of his time at home, focusing on his family and ensuring the well-being of his children.

The actor shared that he only steps out when work requires him to shoot skits or participate in interviews.

He emphasized the importance of his children in his life, stating, “In fact, my life would have been worse off after the divorce if I didn’t have my children with me. I forget about my worries when I see them. So I don’t joke with them at all.”

Reflecting on his marriage, Manu discussed the dissolution of his relationship with his wife, Okailey, two years ago.

Despite their efforts to make the marriage work, they had to go their separate ways. He acknowledged that there is no one-size-fits-all formula for a successful marriage and that every couple’s situation is unique.

“It is the wish of every married man to live happily ever after with the woman he loves, especially when they have children together,” Manu expressed.

He recognized that people are curious about the reasons behind the divorce but chose not to delve into specific details.

He simply stated, “I am single for now.”

Russian Coup: Putin not our target – Wagner chief Prigozhin finally speaks

Yevgeny Prigozhin, the commander of the Wagner, has spoken out for the first time since the weekend’s aborted military coup.

In an 11-minute audio recording he posted, he claims that no one consented to a contract being signed with the defence ministry and that his mercenary organisation was obligated to suspend operations on July 1.

When he announced that his men would march on Moscow, Prigozhin made it plain that he wasn’t targeting Putin, saying: “We didn’t march to overthrow Russia’s leadership.”

In his video message, he says: ‘The aim of the march was to avoid destruction of Wagner and to hold to account the officials who through their unprofessional actions have committed a massive number of errors’.

He says Wagner regrets ‘they had to hit Russian aviation’ and they turned around ‘to avoid spilling blood of Russian soldiers.’

  • Aristocrat’s daughter’s death probe includes NHS failures

Aristocrat’s daughter’s death probe includes NHS failures

An probe into NHS shortcomings will reexamine the untimely death of an aristocrat’s 25-year-old daughter.

Gaia Young, half-sister of author Toby Young and the deceased Lord Young of Dartington’s daughter, passed away in July 2021 after claiming to have a terrible headache.

She had intense vomiting, so an ambulance was called to take her from her home in Islington, north London, to University College London Hospital (UCLH).

Four days after being hospitalised, Gaia was ruled brain dead and placed on a ventilator 16 hours later.

The product specialist and artist had no underlying health conditions and she tested negative for Covid. Her death was treated as unexplained following a post-mortem.

An inquest into her death was held last February, where a coroner gave a narrative conclusion, ruling ‘a missed chance’ by medics when Gaia first arrived at hospital led to her death.

A CT scan was not carried out following Gaia’s admission, with doctors assuming her symptoms were the result of dehydration or drug-taking.

The official cause of death was recorded as a cerebral oedema – or swelling of the brain – caused intracranial pressure.

However, Gaia’s mum, Lady Dorit Young, believes doctors ‘misread signs’ and misdiagnosed her.

She said a number of questions over her daughter’s death were not answered at the inquest, including what caused her brain to swell suddenly.

Lady Young had requested for a specialist German neurologist to give evidence at the inquest, but this was refused by the coroner.

At the hearing she claimed two attempted lumbar punctures made Gaia’s condition worse and left her extremely distressed.

She described her life since losing her daughter as ‘like a nightmare train running over me’.

Almost two years on from Gaia’s death, UCLH is now hoping to answer some of her mother’s questions.

A spokesman for the hospital trust said: ‘We have agreed to commission a range of independent experts, including a neurologist, to explore further the circumstances surrounding Gaia’s death.

‘We have invited Gaia’s mother to agree the details of the external reviews so that we can proceed.’

Lady Young said: ‘The coroner allowed the hospital to choose its own witnesses, which is a breach of natural justice.’

Outside of work, Gaia was a competitive ballroom dancer, a keen painter and loved to cycle.

She was thinking of taking a cycling holiday and had been on a bike ride on the day she became ill.

It was around 10.30pm that evening when she complained of a sudden headache and excused herself from dinner to lie down on a sofa in the front room.

By the time she arrived at hospital she was confused, had difficulty communicating with medics and was throwing up.

Lady Young said: ‘The junior doctor there thought she was intoxicated because she was acting strangely.

‘She had hallucinations. She seemed to reach out for things that didn’t exist. She was repeating sentences.’

Lady Young said she had since spoken to a doctor who said assumptions like this were not uncommon and can be ‘a death sentence’.

‘You must never assume intoxication without proof, but it is happening to young people every weekend,’ she said.

In her conclusion, coroner Mary Hassell said one possible cause of Gaia’s oedema was low sodium levels, in which case, ‘more monitoring and better clinical management would have afforded her a better chance of survival’.

Mrs Hassell added ‘a CT scan was not conducted as it should have been immediately following her admission to hospital’.

She said: ‘If the earlier CT scan had been conducted and had shown raised intracranial pressure or the later scan had been observed correctly, this would have changed the management [of her care]. Gaia Young would not have had a lumbar puncture attempted.

‘Had intracranial pressure been noted it would have resulted in the “head up” nursing position, admission to the ICU and potential intubation that would have afforded her a better chance of survival.’

Lady Young said this meant her daughter’s critically raised pressure in her brain was not discovered early enough to save her life.

She added: ‘In fact it was never even on the clinicians’ radar as long as Gaia was alive.

‘Gaia died right under their noses and the medics did not know what they had on their hands.’

While the inquest uncovered possible missed opportunities to save Gaia’s life, the actual cause of her oedema was ‘unclear’, the coroner said.

Lady Young believes this question could have been answered if a neurologist had been called to court, as she had requested.

She said: ‘I’m looking for the truth. My daughter was a very fine girl. She would have done what I am doing.

‘I’m incredibly angry with the system. I’ve never been in a situation like this before. If you would have told me five years ago that this is how things are handled, I just wouldn’t have believed you.’

UCLH said new guidance has been given to staff to handle patients with similar symptoms.

The spokesman added: ‘We understand that this continues to be an extremely difficult time for Gaia’s mother and loved ones and offer our deepest sympathies.

‘While the coroner could not say that different care could have prevented Gaia’s death, we do acknowledge some things could have been done better.

‘We have already developed new clinical guidance and training following our internal investigation and we are committed to understanding what further lessons can be learned.’

Websleuths convicted as an inquest establishes their cause of death – Live update

Nicola Bulley wasn’t hurt right before she entered the River Wyre, but she drowned in’seconds’, according to the findings of an inquest.

Currently, a coroner is hearing testimony regarding how the mother-of-two lost her life after going missing in January while walking her dog close to St. Michael’s on Wyre, Lancashire.

After a thorough week-long search, the body of Nicola was discovered a mile downstream. Her phone, which was still linked to a work Teams call, was discovered on a bench overlooking the water.

Witnesses have this afternoon spoken about seeing Nicola in her final moments, and described seeing her and her dog Willow having a ‘lovely run and play’ before she plunged to her death.

Security at Preston County Hall, where the inquest is taking place, has been beefed up after the coroner expressed fears conspiracists could try to disrupt proceedings.

Diving experts and doctors have explained what would have happened to Nicola when she entered the cold river water, though the inquest has yet to hear evidence on how she ended up there.

  • Elementary school students admitted to hospitals after smoking

Elementary school students admitted to hospitals after smoking

Over vaping is causing children and adolescents as early as elementary school age to end up in hospitals.

According to recent data from NHS England obtained by Sky News, there were 15 instances of children under the age of nine being hospitalised in the year up to April.

This is an increase from the two and 12 from the year before.

Last year, the use of e-cigarettes resulted in the hospitalisation of about 40 young individuals, all under the age of 19.

Professor Andy Bush, a paediatric chest physician at the Royal Brompton Hospital in west London, told Sky News he is ‘absolutely horrified’ by the statistics.

He said: ‘Young children are being exposed to substances of addiction, substances that are toxic and some of the toxicity is not known.

‘It’s a jungle… we just do not know what is in most of these things.

‘If a teenager starts smoking cigarettes, probably the worst that’s going to happen to them is they’re going to be sick and throw up behind the bike shed.

‘The acute use of e-cigarettes can put them in hospital, can put them in intensive care, things like lung bleeding, lung collapse and air leak, the lungs filling up with fat.’

Discussions around vaping have been top of the agenda recently, with the children’s commissioner calling for a ban on disposable e-cigarettes.

Dame Rachel de Souza said: ‘I am concerned by the rise in the number of children vaping in this country, particularly given the risks it poses to their health and wellbeing.

‘It is deeply worrying to hear how children feel pressured to vape.

‘It is insidious that these products are intentionally marketed and promoted to children, both online and offline.

‘Many children who are addicted to vaping have never even smoked tobacco, with vaping acting as a gateway rather than a quitting strategy.

‘Children deserve to lead long, happy, healthy lives, which is why I am unequivocal in my view that no child should be smoking or vaping.’

Children’s doctors at the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health warned vaping is fast becoming a ‘youth epidemic’.

It recently demanded urgent action to protect youngsters, saying longer-term data on the effects of vaping is needed.

‘Since e-cigarettes have only been on sale in the UK since 2007, long-term studies don’t yet exist,’ the group said in a statement.

‘We have even less evidence on the long-term impacts of these products on young lungs, hearts and brains.

‘It took experts decades to fully understand the impact of traditional cigarettes, we cannot risk our children’s health in waiting this long again for longer-term studies.’

  • Met Police advise the public not to dial 999 due to technical issues

Met Police advise the public not to dial 999 due to technical issues

After a “technical fault” shut down the emergency phone line today, people were briefly advised to contact 101 rather than 999.

Emergency services claim that BT’s “system failure” was the cause of the problem, which earlier this morning affected first responders all throughout Britain.

The 999 phone system, according to London’s Metropolitan Police Service, has been “restored” as of around 9:50am.

According to the police, “the 999 system has been restored following an earlier widespread technical fault.”

‘Anyone requiring the police in an emergency in London should call 999 as usual.

‘If your call is not an emergency, please dial 101.’

    Latest London news

A spokesperson for BT said that while technicians are still fixing the problem, 999 calls should work ‘as usual’ now after its back-up network kicked in.

‘Early this morning we experienced a problem with the 999 service,’ they told Metro.co.uk.

‘The situation is fast-moving as we fix the problem and our backup platform is now working – so people should call 999 as usual. We will provide updates as the issue is resolved.’

A government spokesperson said: ‘We are aware of a technical issue with the 999 call system today. A full investigation is underway to resolve this as quickly as possible.

‘BT’s back-up system for emergency calls is running and members of the public with genuine emergencies should continue to call 999 or 112 in the normal way.

‘You should be able to connect when calling 999 or 112, but if you still have difficulties connecting you may contact 101 for police and fire and rescue services, or 111 for health.’

It comes after the Met, as well as dozens of other emergency services agencies, reported that a ‘technical fault’ meant callers weren’t being connected to dispatchers.

In medical emergencies, people were advised to pick up the phone and dial 111, the non-emergency medical helpline operating in England, Scotland and some parts of Wales.

The NHS added in a tweet: ‘There is an issue affecting the national 999 call system.

‘BT is working to resolve this issue as soon as possible but, in the meantime, if you are unable to contact 999 in a medical emergency, please call 111 who will redirect your call.’

Police Scotland, Police Service Northern Ireland and each of the four territorial police forces in Wales all reported that their 999 hotlines had buckled in the past hour.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service told people to phone regional call centres directly.

Scottish First Minister Humza Yousaf said the saga was ‘concerning’.

‘We are, of course, working with Scottish Fire and Rescue and others to see if that situation has been resolved,’ he told Sky News.

Some forces have said since that they received a ‘large volume’ of 999 calls because of the hiccup.

Nottinghamshire Police said: ‘Due to an earlier technical fault that is impacting police forces nationally, we are currently receiving a high volume of 999 calls.

‘We’re reminding people to only call 999 in an emergency and to make use of our non-emergency 101 number and our Live Chat service.’

Man tortured to death over fabricated charges of sexual abuse

Newly released video depicts the anxious moments leading up to the savage ‘vigilante’ killing of an eight-year-old father in Australia due to unfounded suspicions that he had mistreated girls.

Jana Hooper, Bradley Lyons’ wife, assisted so-called “paedophile hunters” corner him in their home before the gang abducted and tortured him in an effort to coerce a confession in December 2018.

According to testimony given in court, Mr. Lyons was pummelling, doused in Deep Heat, scalded with hot water from a kettle, and held over a chainsaw until he drank some water.

After refusing to admit to the accusations – which were baseless – shot dead and buried in a shallow grave in a bushland.

When he was found, both his feet, several bones from his hands and a neck bone were missing – but the gang’s meth abuse made it impossible to piece together their recollections of how this came to be, according to Daily Mail Australia.

Reports suggest the rumours stemmed from Hooper and a tenant of Mr Lyons, Nick Stefani, who rented a bungalow at the rear of their house in Lakes Entrance, Victoria.

Stefani was part of a group of at least six men who started a club to target paedophiles, calling themselves the Australian Freedom Fighters Group.

Hooper, who shared three children with Mr Lyons, is said to have told the gang’s ringleader, 57-year-old Albert Thorn, that she believed her husband had abused two of her daughters from a previous relationship.

She said he was the father of her 16-year-old daughter’s baby and had also impregnated her 14-year-old daughter, but a court heard both claims were lies, Daily Mail Australia added.

The gang started organising the attack after Stefani started believing Mr Lyons was a paedophile, ABC News reported.

He set about circulating the ‘flimsy claims’, which led to Thorn and two other ‘Australian Freedom Fighters’, Alec Harvey and Rikki Smith, orchestrating the attack.

CCTV taken from a neighbour’s security camera shows Mr Lyons following his wife into their home, where he was beaten with a metal pole by the group and had a shotgun thrust into his mouth – before being bundled into Thorn’s car.

The victim was taken to Thorn’s mother’s property, where he was thrown inside a shed, tied to a massage table and tortured into the early hours of the following day.

He was then put in the boot again and driven to the remote wilderness near Double Bridges, where Thorn shot him in the knee and head with a shotgun before ordering Smith and another accomplice Jordan Bottom, to bury him.

Thorn then told his eight-year-old daughter he had killed a man who was ‘rude to children’ and warned her ‘not to tell a single soul’ – but she bravely helped convict him by giving police a detailed statement.

Thorn was found guilty earlier this month of murder, kidnapping, false imprisonment and intentionally injuring someone. He will be sentenced at a later hearing.

His co-conspirators were either not charged with murder or found not guilty of the crime after claiming they did not realise he planned to kill Mr Lyons.

Stefani received a 10-year sentence for intentionally causing injury, kidnapping, false imprisonment and common law assault. Harvey, who disposed of the gun, got eight-and-a-half years.

Hooper was jailed last year for seven-and-a-half years for her role.

Smith, 26, and Bottom, 25, were found guilty of assault and unlawful imprisonment earlier this month and will be sentenced at a later hearing.

Pilot killed in hot air balloon disaster identified

Early on Sunday morning, Peter Gregory was declared dead after his hot air balloon caught fire above a village in Worcestershire.

People have paid tribute to the 25-year-old who passed away “doing what he loved.”

His family wrote in a statement sent by West Mercia Police: “Peter Gregory, 25 years of living life to the fullest.

‘Our Pilot Pete made one more trip on the morning of Sunday, June 25, doing what he loved.

‘Be it in a hot air balloon or as an airline pilot, Peter’s passion for flying was something his family and friends could only admire and support him towards.

‘When he set his heart to something, he’d never give up, he was driven and determined, and one could only watch on in awe.

‘We will fly together again soon Pete. We love you, Dan, Mummy, Daddy & Emma.’

Mr Gregory’s death is being investigated by the Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB).

Emergency services attended Holt Fleet Road in Ombersley after receiving a call that a hot air balloon had fallen to the ground near the village.

The British Balloon and Airship Club (BBAC) said it was aware of the incident.

‘The AAIB have been informed and supported by the BBAC, will be investigating the circumstances,’ a statement said.

‘Our thoughts are with the family and friends of those involved at this time.’

Akufo-Addo refutes allegations of interference in Gyakye Quayson’s prosecution

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has refuted allegations that he is responsible for the prosecution of former Member of Parliament for Assin North, James Gyakye Quayson.

He asserts that he has never interfered with the judiciary’s work during his tenure as President.

Speaking to supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Assin Breku, Central Region, ahead of the upcoming by-election, President Akufo-Addo maintained that Mr. Quayson is facing prosecution due to his violation of the law.

The President raised a question regarding the distinction between Mr. Quayson and Adam Sakande, the former Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, who was prosecuted and convicted for a similar offense.

President Akufo-Addo urged constituents of Assin North not to make the mistake of voting for someone who could potentially end up in jail and impede the area’s development.

The by-election in Assin North became necessary after parliament informed the Electoral Commission that the seat had become vacant. This action followed a Supreme Court ruling stating that the Electoral Commission had acted unconstitutionally by allowing Mr. Quayson to contest the 2020 parliamentary election without providing proof of renouncing his Canadian citizenship.

The court declared Mr. Quayson’s election unconstitutional, null and void, and of no effect. Furthermore, his swearing-in was deemed unconstitutional.

Meanwhile, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is supporting Mr. Quayson as their candidate in the by-election, while the NPP in Assin North has chosen Charles Opoku as their candidate.

The election is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, June 27.

In the Wednesday crash outside of Withybush Hospital in Haverfordwest, south Wales, Mabli Hall sustained serious head injuries.

She received medical attention by airlift at Cardiff’s University Hospital of Wales before being sent to Bristol Children’s Hospital.

Days later, Mabli, who was referred to be the “most beautiful, smiley and happy baby girl,” tragically passed away in her parents’ arms.

The driver of the car and a pedestrian were also hurt in the ‘tragic accident’.
