Yvonne Nelson needs professional help –  Dr Isaac Newman Arthur

In response to the profound revelations shared in her latest book, “I am Not Yvonne Nelson,” esteemed clinical psychologist Dr. Isaac Newman Arthur has strongly encouraged actress Yvonne Nelson to carefully consider the option of seeking professional and medical assistance.

In a graphic showbiz report, Dr Arthur, who serves as the Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Psychological Association, emphasized the importance of individuals prioritizing their mental well-being and disregarding the negative stigma attached to seeking professional help.

According to Dr Arthur, “From what I have read so far, particularly her relationship with her mother, Yvonne needs to heal more. I am not saying that she has any problem but from the book, if she hasn’t been able to heal properly, she needs to heal well otherwise she will pass on the pain to her kids.”

Dr Arthur further emphasized that celebrities, like any other individuals, face mental health challenges and should not hesitate to seek help.

He stated, “Celebrities are also humans so anytime they find themselves in mental challenges, they should seek help. The fact that you are seeking help doesn’t mean you are weak, it only means that you are human.”

Dr Arthur also highlighted the need for understanding and empathy towards celebrities, stating, “Celebrities only exhibit talent.

It has nothing to do with who they are so what we see is the talent but what we don’t see are childhood struggles. We always love the talent but we don’t love the person.”

As Yvonne Nelson’s book continues to generate discussion and introspection, Dr Arthur’s advice serves as a reminder of the importance of mental well-being and seeking professional help when needed.

Ken Agyapong vows to fire even his Chief of Staff if he misbehaves when he comes to power

A flagbearer hopeful of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kennedy Agyapong, has said that one of the easiest things he will do is to sack people who do anything that goes against the country, no matter how close they are to him in power.

He explained that, in the instance he becomes the president of Ghana, even if his chief of staff misbehaves, he would not hesitate to have him sacked.

Speaking at the NPP Headquarters in Accra after he had filed his nomination forms, the flagbearer hopeful, who is also the Member of Parliament for Assin Central, stressed that it is the only way to imbibe discipline in the populace.

“I believe in accountability, I’m sorry. If God gives me the nod, he’ll be a chief of staff, but one strike, he’s out. Ghana first, he comes second. If he does anything against this country, I’ll fire him. That is the only way we can move this country.

“So, can you imagine if I’ve fired my chief of staff, the rest will sit up because even the chief of staff fired, then what about me the director, what about me the manager? It trickles down, and we’ll become disciplined. Discipline is key to the success of this country,” he said.

Kennedy Agyapong is among a number leading New Patriotic Party (NPP) members who have so far submitted their forms to lead the party as its presidential candidate for the 2024 general elections.

“To say the least, I think that all of us in the industry are heavily misunderstood, and if there is a channel for you to tell your story the best way you know how, I think why not. I think that nobody can tell your story the way you want but you,” Joselyn remarked.

She further highlighted that Yvonne’s courageous step would give a voice to many young girls, inspiring them to speak up and use the memoir as a guiding light.

“I think with what we are doing, our lives are already out there. Whether there is a perception or there is none, people already sort of study our lives.

Woman charged with murdering two infants and storing their bodies in a freezer for years

A lady is accused of killing two of her babies and keeping the bodies in her freezer for years, according to police in South Korea, for which they have asked for an arrest warrant.

According to a representative of the Gyeonggi Nambu Provincial Police, the mother, who was in her 30s, acknowledged to killing the infants and claimed that she did so because it was difficult for her to provide for her other three children, who are 12, 10, and 8, due to financial constraints.

The official said that the infants were barely one day old when they passed away.

Her first alleged victim was her fourth child, born in a hospital in November 2018. Police allege she strangled the girl the day after giving birth, and put the body in the freezer of her home. She is accused of doing the same to her fifth child, a boy born in November 2019.

Her husband said he had been told the two children were aborted, and therefore did not know about the alleged murders, according to police.

The case came to light in May when the government’s Board of Audit and Inspection found the babies’ births were never officially registered, although there was a record of their births in the hospital.

The board then notified Suwon City Hal, the municipal government, which requested a police investigation after the mother refused an on-site inspection.

On June 21, the police conducted a search and seizure operation in the woman’s home, during which she confessed to the murders, police say.

The woman is due to attend an arrest warrant hearing on Friday.

  • Evan Gershkovich’s appeal against pre-trial detention unsuccessful

Evan Gershkovich’s appeal against pre-trial detention unsuccessful

Evan Gershkovich, a reporter for the Wall Street Journal, was accused of spying and lost his appeal against the extension of his pre-trial detention in Moscow on Thursday.

Last month, the term of Gershkovich’s confinement at Moscow’s notorious Lefortovo jail was extended until August 30. He faces espionage allegations, which he and his employer fiercely deny, and could spend up to 20 years in prison.

In a glass cage, Gershkovich attended the verdict in a dark t-shirt and pants.

The US ambassador to Russia, Lynne Tracy, was also at the hearing at Moscow City Court, as were his parents, Ella Milman and Mikhail Gershkovich.

Tracy told reporters outside the court that the US was “extremely disappointed” by the decision to reject Gershkovich’s appeal.

“This was a procedural hearing, appealing the conditions of his continued detention and we were extremely disappointed by the denial of his appeal,” Tracy said, adding that she “could not speak with Evan directly at the courthouse today,” and blasted Russia’s denial of US diplomats’ requests for consular access to him.

“Failing to comply with its obligations under the consular convention enforced between our two countries, Russia has denied the US embassy’s requests for formal consular access on three occasions since I last visited Evan in April,” she said.

“Nonetheless, today, in the courtroom, Evan continued to show remarkable strength and resiliency in these very difficult circumstances.”

Earlier on Thursday, Russian state news agency TASS reported that the Russian Foreign Ministry was considering a request from the United States for consular access to Gershkovich.

Russia’s main security service, the FSB, has claimed that Gershkovich, a correspondent based in Moscow, had been trying to obtain state secrets.

His arrest in March was the first detention of an American reporter in Russia on allegations of spying since the Cold War, rattling White House officials and further straining ties between Moscow and Washington.

On May 23, his detention was extended until at least August 30 while he awaits trial.

The US State Department has officially designated Gershkovich as wrongfully detained in Russia. US President Joe Biden has also been blunt about Gershkovich’s arrest, urging Russia to “let him go.”

  • Navalny’s petition against not having access to writing supplies in prison rejected by the court

Navalny’s petition against not having access to writing supplies in prison rejected by the court

Alexey Navalny, a jailed leader of the Russian opposition, had appealed against restrictions placed on his access to writing materials in prison, but the Russian Supreme Court on Thursday rejected his case, according to independent news source Mediazona.

Navalny had been contesting the limitations placed on access to writing materials in jails “not only for himself, but for all prisoners” during a hearing at the Supreme Court in Moscow, according to his spokesperson Kira Yarmysh. She claimed Navalny, who was present at the court via video link, had been contesting the limits “not only for himself, but for all prisoners.”

In a tweet on her official Twitter account, she stated that Aleksey was working to secure the right to correspondence for all inmates as well as for himself.

The decision came as Navalny is facing a new trial on charges of “extremism” that could result in his prison sentence being extended by decades.

A court spokesperson said Monday that the trial will take place behind closed doors.

Navalny is already serving sentences totaling 11-and-a-half years in a maximum security facility on fraud and other charges that he says were trumped up.

He and his supporters claim that his arrest and imprisonment were politically motivated, intended to silence his criticism of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Just hours after the trial began, Navalny announced the start of a campaign aimed at turning Russians against the war in Ukraine.

In comments posted to his Twitter account, Navalny said the “absurd” charges could lead to him serving a further 30 years behind bars.

One person still missing after central gas explosions in Paris

Following a gas explosion in central Paris on Wednesday, the Paris prosecutor’s office confirmed to CNN on Thursday that six people are still in critical condition and one person is still missing.

The event left around 50 people hurt, however the Paris prosecutor’s office, which is looking into the explosion, warned the number may not be exact.

According to Paris police chief Laurent Nunez, 270 firefighters were sent to the scene in Rue Saint Jacques in the city’s fifth arrondissement, and they put out the fire in less than two hours.

Francois Braun, France’s health minister, told CNN affiliate BFMTV Thursday that some of those injured are suffering from “extremely significant burns,” while others have suffered “significant traumatic injuries” due to the blast.

French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin visited the site of the explosion on Wednesday. He said it was unclear how exactly the explosion occurred, adding there was no warning before the incident.

Laure Beccuau, the Paris prosecutor said that early signs indicate that the gas explosion came from within the building that houses the Paris American Academy, according BFMTV.

A part of the building collapsed following the blast and fire, videos show. Smoke was seen billowing from the rubble earlier on Wednesday as rescue workers attempted to tackle the blaze.

Paris American Academy, a fashion and design school, describes itself on its website as the “first bilingual design school” in the French capital

Kent State University, in the US state of Ohio, said all its students at the Paris American Academy are safe and accounted following the blast.

Locals were also stopped from returning to their homes in surrounding streets by authorities in the aftermath of the explosion.

One woman, who gave her name as Anne, told a CNN producer at the scene that she was inside her flat, around 500 meters (1,640 feet) from the site, when the explosion happened.

“It felt like an earthquake, the windows banged against each other,” she said.

Another woman who didn’t want to give her name and lives in a neighboring avenue told CNN that her doors slammed shut from the explosion.

Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo visited the scene later on Wednesday, writing in a tweet, “My thoughts go first of all to the victims and their close ones.” Authorities in Paris have opened an emergency response unit to handle the aftermath of the explosion.

French President Emmanuel Macron briefly addressed the disaster later on Wednesday, thanking the first responders for their work. “In celebrating music today, we are also thinking of [the victims] and all those who are going through a difficult time,” Macron added before launching a performance Wednesday night at Élysée for the Music Day.

31 people killed in gas explosion at barbecue restaurant in China

Following a gas explosion at a barbecue restaurant on Wednesday night, official media reports that at least 31 people are dead and seven injured in the Chinese city of Yinchuan, located in the northwest Ningxia province.

According to official broadcaster CCTV, the explosion occurred at around 8:40 p.m. and was brought on by a leak in a liquified petrol tank within the restaurant.

One of the injured—out of the seven—remains in a critical state. For minor wounds, burns, and glass cuts, the other six are receiving hospital treatment.

Local fire authorities sent 20 vehicles and more than 100 personnel to the scene, with search and rescue operations lasting until 4 a.m. Thursday, according to state media.

Photos posted by state media show the damaged building, with blackened exteriors, debris on the ground and smoke in the air. Firefighters are seen entering the second floor on a ladder and lifting people out on stretchers.

Interviews by police and firefighters on the scene established that two restaurant staffers had smelled gas about an hour before the explosion, the Yinchuan government said in a statement posted online Thursday.

The two staffers found the valve of the gas tank had broken, and sent another staff member to buy a new one, according to the statement. The explosion took place as the valve was being replaced.

The restaurant is located on a busy street, state media reported.

Police have detained nine people and frozen their assets, including the restaurant’s manager, employees and shareholders, according to state media China Youth Daily.

Chinese leader Xi Jinping called the incident “heartbreaking,” and said it was a “profound lesson,” state broadcaster CCTV reported Thursday.

Xi added that it is imperative to treat the wounded and comfort the victims’ families, and to find out the cause of the accident as soon as possible. He also ordered relevant government authorities to carry out a safety risk review and strengthen safety supervision in key sectors, CCTV reported.

The incident came just before China began its three-day national public holiday, from Thursday to Saturday, marking the Dragon Boat Festival.

The country has been rocked by a number of safety incidents this year. A coal mine collapse in Inner Mongolia in February left 53 dead; then in April, the deadliest fire to hit Beijing in two decades killed 29 people in a hospital.

Brother of military officer who was murdered in Bawku shares emotional tribute

A brother of an officer of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) who was gruesomely murdered at Bawku, has given a blunt, uncensored tribute about his late brother.

Delivering the tribute during the funeral service of his late brother, Philip Motey, Cephas Motey (a lawyer), said their 79-year-old mother looked forward to seeing their brother become the family’s third lawyer.

He described what happened on the night of Monday, April 3, 2023, as a targeted activity.

He added that it is a difficult thing for him to forgive whoever was behind this crime, stressing that not even a spiritual intervention would make him back down on that.

“What happened that day was a carefully-designed, properly-planned, well-orchestrated, thoughtfully-calculated, and duly executed barbaric, cruel and gruesome act of murder. And I, Cephas, find it extremely difficult to forgive; not even with the intervention of Christ himself.

“And, I will not mince my words because I stand on this podium to speak the truth – that is what it is mean to be; the church. I find it extremely difficult to forgive. I will not ask Philip to rest in peace; it is his choice if he wants to rest in peace. If he does not want to rest in peace, I leave it to him,” he said.

Cephas Motey also recalled how supportive the late Philip was, so much that he spent most of his salaries on every member of his family.

“When Philip became an immigration officer, he spent his salary on all his siblings. There is not a single sibling of Philip who did not benefit from him,” he added.

Suspect in Kenyan starving cult dies in detention over hunger strike

A prosecutor announced on Wednesday that a Kenyan accused of taking part in the deaths of hundreds of followers of a starving cult had passed away in police custody following a 10-day hunger strike.

30 persons, including Good News International Church self-styled pastor Paul Mackenzie, were being held in custody for the killings of 337 church members, including Joseph Buyuka.

According to court documents, Buyuka and the other four people he was arrested with “played significant roles in the offences leading to the deaths and illegal disposal of bodies in Shakahola (forest),” according to the police.

Authorities have exhumed most of the bodies from the forest in southeast Kenya since April.

Jami Yamina, senior prosecution counsel, said Buyuka had died two days ago at a hospital in Malindi, about 116 km (72 miles) from the port city of Mombasa where he had been taken from a nearby prison.

“He died …(due to) … complications from hunger strike and starvation, but we will await postmortem report,” Yamina told a court in Mombasa.

“Two other suspects … have also been taken ill. Police believe it is related to their hunger strike.”

Mackenzie is accused of ordering his followers to starve their children and themselves to death so they could reach heaven before the end of the world.

He handed himself over to police in April and was denied bail last month. The other suspects were arrested later after authorities started the exhumations.

He and the others have not yet been required to enter a plea.

Interior Minister Kithure Kindiki had expressed concern in May that some of Mackenzie’s rescued followers were refusing food. One of them had died, he said at the time.

  • Disgruntled failed licensure exams candidate claims questions were unrelated to study material

Disgruntled failed licensure exams candidate claims questions were unrelated to study material

Some teachers who failed the licensure exams have expressed concern over the type of questions set for them to answer in the exam.

One of the teachers explained that the majority of them should not be held responsible for the widespread failure, but rather the examiners.

Madam Kate stated in an interview on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm that the failures were recorded because the exams did not reflect what the teachers studied in school.

Madam Kate, who began teaching after completing her secondary education, explained that it was inappropriate to ask someone who had studied early childhood education to write an examination meant for someone who had studied basic or junior high education.

“One major thing I have observed is that I have been to the university, studied and passed all my 24 courses without referrals, and been awarded a certificate and my degree, so why should licensure exams stand in my way? Why should I sit for an examination for someone who studied junior high education when I studied early childhood education?”

”The level of mathematics taught in early childhood differs from that taught in basic or junior high school. So, should you pose questions to someone who studied early childhood and expect them to respond when they have no knowledge of the questions and have not studied anything related to them?”

He emphasised the importance of the examiners reflecting on her points and reviewing the process of setting the questions because it was not fair to subject them to the current system.

”If that is the case, the questions should be designed to reflect what we learned in school. If you studied early childhood education, you should take exams in that subject, and the same goes for others. The majority of those who failed studied early childhood education.”

    Background

Six thousand four hundred teachers failed the 2023 Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination.

The National Teaching Council revealed the results after the teachers completed the re-sit papers.

Dennis Osei-Owusu, the Council’s Public Relations Officer, said that just 1,277 of the 7, 728 teachers who took the re-sit exams succeeded.

“In all we had 7,728 candidates sat for the exams and these candidates were all resisters. They are teachers who had written it before and they couldn’t make it. The least is twice written, and the highest is 9 times. These are the group of people who sat for the exams. Only 1,277 passed the exams, they are the only people who passed and don’t have a deficit again. 16.5% of them passed the exams.

“It’s a national security threat, we are having people going to the classrooms to teach our future generations and if I tell you the kind of things some of them wrote, you ask the kind of training they had in their various training institutions before they got here. Everything shows that most of them are not ready to be teachers, they just want to explore the system,” the Public Relations Officer of the National Teaching Council said.

  • Coup trial: Fourth accused denies ever plotting to overthrow Akufo-Addo

The fourth accused in the trial over the alleged plot to overthrow the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo government, has denied the charges brought against him. Maintaining his innocence, Johannes Zikpi, firmly stated that he never conspired with anyone to remove the president from office.

According to a report filed by the Chronicle newspaper on June 21, 2023, during the proceedings at the Accra High Court, which featured a panel of three justices including Afia Serwaa Asare-Botwe, Hafisata Amaleboba, and Stephen Oppong; Zikpi addressed the accusations leveled against him, refuting his involvement in the said plot.

The report further revealed that the accused contended that the prosecution’s claim of his involvement in a conspiracy to overthrow the government was entirely false, emphasizing that he was not acquainted with seven of the accused individuals.

In his testimony, the accused clarified that his association with the late Dr. Frederick MacPalm stemmed from his relationship with one Col. Samuel Kodzo Gamali, a senior military officer.

Zikpi further asserted that he had known the colonel since 2015, and it was he who introduced him to Dr. MacPalm in 2018 to assist with the treatment of his high blood pressure.

According to him, their connection was solely that of a doctor and patient, with no ulterior motives.

Furthermore, Johannes Zikpi strongly denied the prosecution’s claim that he was tasked with acquiring a communication jamming device to disrupt radio broadcasts.

He stated unequivocally, “I did not perform any role in terms of planning or providing any support for a coup plot, as alleged by the prosecution. I did not propose the procurement of Gota phones to any of the accused individuals to facilitate covert communication, contrary to their claims,” the newspaper quoted him to have said in court.

However, Zikpi informed the court that Dr. MacPalm had approached him in the past, seeking assistance with his telephone communication problems at the hospital and as a result, the deceased had asked him if he knew someone who could help him acquire a Gota phone to improve his network reception.

He explained that in response, he reached out to a colleague named Sergeant Ghartey, asking for assistance in purchasing the phone, however, Sgt. Ghartey clarified that Gota phones were strictly for security services personnel, thus ending the matter.

The report further revealed that Zikpi denied having sent a message to Dr. MacPalm on March 9, 2019.

    Background

Dr. Mac-Palm together with two others; Ezor Kafui and Bright Allan Debrah Ofosu, were on Friday, September 20, 2019, picked up by a joint team from the Bureau of National Investigation (BNI) and the Criminal Investigative Department (CID) for plotting a coup against the presidency with the intent to destabilize the country.

The Minister of Information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, in a press release, revealed how state agencies detected and foiled a planned attack on the Jubilee House leading to the retrieval of several arms, explosive devices, and ammunition from Alajo and Bawaleshie in Accra and Dodowa respectfully.

Following the alleged coup attempt, the three accused persons were arraigned before the Kaneshie District Court and slapped with five charges.

Some of the charges they’re faced with are conspiracy to commit crimes; to wit manufacturing of arms and ammunition without lawful authority, possessing explosives and firearms without lawful excuse, and manufacture of firearms without lawful authority.

But reacting to the charges after court proceedings, Dr. Mac-Palm (now deceased) while being escorted by the BNI to his vehicle shouted by pleading innocent to the charges leveled against him.

According to him, he knows the truth will definitely come out for him to be vindicated so he is not in any way bothered about the whole issue.

However, the Kaneshie District Court presided over by the magistrate, Rosemond Dodua Agyiri, remanded them into BNI custody and ordered that family members and lawyers be allowed to visit the accused persons at the time.

Meanwhile, the leading suspect Dr. Frederick Mac-Palm is dead. According to information available concerning his death, he was said to have collapsed in the late hours of Saturday, March 25, 2023, and was later confirmed dead upon arrival at the hospital.

Obayeboe residents in ellembelle desperate for electricity

Residents of Obayeboe, a farming community in the Ellembelle District of the Western Region, are calling on government to connect their community to the national electricity grid.

Obayeboe, a farming community is located on Aiyinasi-Kanokwari road and since the establishment of Akosombo Dam, the community is yet to see electricity.

The community has at least 600 residents.

Residents at Obayeboe depend largely on torchlights and candles for evening and night activities, our Western Regional Correspondent observed during his visit to the community.

The situation, he observed compels majority of residents to travel to Nyamebekyere and Aiyinasi to charge their mobile phones and chargeable torchlights.

It was revealed to our correspondent how the situation was affecting schoolchildren’s academic performance in the area.

GhanaWeb Western Regional correspondent observed that surrounding communities of Obayeboe community had been connected to the national electricity grid.

Communities such as Aiyinasi, Odo Ye, Nyamebekyere, Sendu, Kanokwari and Atababo have electricity meanwhile Obayeboe is in between Aiyinasi and Nyamebekyere.

Speaking to some residents in an exclusive interview, they said because there was no electricity in the area, it was very difficult for their community to develop in all sectors.

“Our main problem we are facing is electricity because there is electricity at Nyamebekyere up to Atababo and you pass our community first before reaching Nyamebekyere.

“From Obayeboe to Nyamebekyere is just a half-kilometer distance but Nyamebekyere has electricity and our community does not have electricity”, a resident called Edward Oppong said.

He added, “we have church here, we have school here and because there is no electricity here, our children perform badly in school, their performance is not good at all. The schoolchildren need electricity badly to learn. They depend largely on torchlights and it is not easy to buy torchlights nowadays”.

He, therefore, beseeched government of Ghana through Energy Ministry to come to their aid urgently.

Madam Christiana Siah also expressed her displeasure over the situation.

She said, “We need light in this community, from here to Nyamebekyere is just a short distance but we don’t have light. We cannot see and hear what is happening in Ghana through TV. Are we not part of Ghana?”

“Our children academic performance is in limbo, they can’t study in the evening, when you go to cities, children over there use laptops to study but our children here don’t have any access”, she worried.

“So we are begging the government to help us so that we can be part of Ghanaians. There is a small community after us over there called Odo Ye, they have electricity.

“We are appealing to government to provide us with electricity, we need electricity urgently because we also vote during public elections. They should have mercy on us because we are also human beings”, she pleaded.

A man of God in the area, Elder Patrick Kwofie emphasized that, “This community is no longer a village, it is expanding. School is here, so many people are here but we are suffering a lot. Our children here do not learn at all in the evening. We have been buying torchlights and batteries for so many years and we are even tired. We are begging the government”.

A schoolgirl who spoke to GhanaWeb, appealed to government to consider her community by connecting the community to the electricity national grid so that their academic performance could be improved.

“I don’t have electricity to study in the evening. Whenever they give me homework I find it very difficult to do it. All of us here do not have light to learn.

So we are begging the president to provide us with electricity to study. My mother has bought torchlights and batteries for so many years and she is even tired of buying them. I’m future I want to be a doctor so I’m begging the president to extend electricity here”, she appealed.

  • McDan labels most Ghanaian Ministers as unapproachable

McDan labels most Ghanaian Ministers as unapproachable

Chairman of the McDan Group of Companies, Drb Daniel McKorley, has said that one of the things that impedes local businesses is that ministers of state do not attach a business mindset in dealing with them.

He explained that many ministers in the country have an ‘unapproachable’ personality around them, especially when they are dealing with indigenous businessmen.

Speaking on a panel at the Ghana Investment and Opportunities Summit, organised by the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC) in the United Kingdom, Dr McKorley explained that after investing so much into many sectors of the economy, he has come to the realisation that many local businessmen are not protected.

“To be able to invest about $38million within one year, $88million in salt within 2 years, and still be able to procure cargo planes and vessels to connect the continent, tells you that it’s a favourable place to do business. And when you are doing business in Ghana, and luckily most of our policies are quite friendly, and most of our ministers are really not approachable.

“I don’t want to live here and hit on my ministers, but some of my ministers… if you ask me, it’s about time they begin to take businessmen in Ghana very seriously. I believe they don’t take businessmen in their own country very seriously because we are not protected,” he said.

The Summit, which is the third in the series, is aimed at bringing together delegates from the international delegates investor community, venture capitalists and private equity fund managers, among others, for discussions and the exploration of investment opportunities within various sectors of the Ghanaian economy.

  • No. 1 exposé: Judge threatens to discharge Nyantakyi if state fails to call its witness to testify

No. 1 exposé: Judge threatens to discharge Nyantakyi if state fails to call its witness to testify

High Court Judge Justice Marie Louise Simmons has served notice of discharging former Ghana Football Association President Kwasi Nyantakyi if the state fails to open its case.

This was after Assistant State Attorney Derrick Ackah-Nyamike had told the court the state is unable to call its first witness at this stage.

The court on May 17, 2023, laid down conditions under which the state’s key witness Anas Aremyaw was to testify.

The investigative journalist was ordered to avail himself in the chambers of the Judge to allow for inspection of his face by Mr Nyantakyi before mounting the witness box to testify.

Mr. Anas has in a statement indicated this arrangement exposes him to various security threats and will therefore not be availing himself.

The Prosecutor Derrick Ackah-Nyamike informed the court the state’s legal team has since held meetings with the witness.

“We have obtained a copy of the Court’s ruling and we met the witness a few days ago and some concerns were raised and as a result, the Republic is considering its legal and procedural options.

“Shortly before we entered, I explained this to counsel for A1, and the Republic will like to apologise profusely to the court because we assured the court that we will be ready. We humbly pray for a date to put our house in order”

Lawyers for Mr Nyantakyi represented by Baffuor Gyawu Bonsu Ashia had concerns. He pointed out that the trial is currently shrouded in secrecy making preparations very difficult.

He pointed out that the state has even failed to indicate which witness it will be calling to the stand at the next date.

Charles Puozing who represents the other accused person, Abdulai Alhassan urged the court to discharge the two accused persons.

“My difficulty is that my client resides in Tamale. Even if he has to come back, the risk involved is enormous and if he has to come by air, it is so expensive. It is my prayer that the accused persons be discharged.

“Whenever the state is ready, they serve us with a hearing notice. You are the 3rd judge and this matter has been pending for four years. All adjournments in the last four years have been at the instance of the prosecution,” he stated.

Justice Simmons served notice of discharging the accused persons should this trend continue.

“The case has travelled through the hands of two other judges and several adjournments. In view of the fact that the last adjourned date was the decision on the testimony of one of the witnesses, I would grant you one more adjournment to call a witness or have the accused discharged.”

Mr Ackah-Nyamike assured the court the state will put its house in order.

The case is back in court on July 25, 2023.

  • Three-day-old infant passed away over delay of ambulance

A three-day-old infant who was discovered cold and unresponsive by her mother passed away following a 40-minute ambulance wait.

As Wyllow-Raine Swinburn was being breastfed, Amelia Pill saw her face was chilly and she wasn’t reacting, so she dialled 999.

Ms. Pill waited seven minutes for an operator to return her call, according to today’s inquiry testimony.

Paramedics took an additional 40 minutes to reach the residence in Didcot, Oxfordshire, after someone finally picked up the phone.

Wyllow was taken John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford but pronounced dead on arrival. A post mortem revealed nothing abnormal and her death was ruled as sudden unexpected death in infancy, which was unexplained.

Ms Pill made the emergency call at around 4.30am on September 30 last year, before calling her brother Luke and the baby’s grandmother, Anna Fisher, who were both in the house at the time.

In a statement read at the inquest at Oxford Coroner’s Court, Mrs Fisher said: ‘At 04.36 I got a call when I was downstairs with the dogs from Amelia saying that Wyllow had stopped breathing.

‘She was screaming, “no-one is coming, no-one is coming.” I was up and down the stairs as Luke started doing CPR.’

Paramedic Karen Silliborn-Aston told coroner Darren Salter that the first ambulance was at the family home in Blackthorn Road at 5.09am.

The baby’s temperature was taken when she arrived at the hospital and it read 30.8C. A normal temperature for a human is 37C.

Following Wyllow’s death, Oxford University NHS Foundation Trust launched an internal investigation, which found she would have been in a prolonged period of cardiac arrest before the 999 call.

The overall outcome was not likely to be influenced by the time taken to answer the 999 call and the arrival of the ambulance, the investigation concluded.

Ms Silliborn-Aston apologised for any ‘additional distress’ to the family as a result of the delays.

She said that the nearest vehicle for the South Central Ambulance Service had been 24 miles away at the time of the Category 1 call.

An emergency alarm was put out across the region to see if any other responders could make it there first, which they could. However, it still took 40 minutes.

The family’s lawyer asked the coroner to delay the rest of the inquest until more evidence was gathered

He argued that because Wyllow weighed 10 pounds and 5 ounces when born, which is well above average, she was vulnerable to diabetes and that something could have been given to her to save her life.

The inquest was adjourned to a date to be set later.

  • Afia Schwarzenegger lashes out at Yvonne Nelson over claims about her mother in ‘I am not Yvonne Nelson’

Afia Schwarzenegger lashes out at Yvonne Nelson over claims about her mother in ‘I am not Yvonne Nelson’

Afia Schwarzenegger has described as disgusting and childish Yvonne Nelson’s act of publishing a book that seeks to disrespect her mother.

She has joined the section of celebrities who have condemned the actress for sharing what has been described as a series of unnecessary private information.

The actress has been trending all week following some revelations in her book which details her sexual escapades with Ghanaian rapper Sarkodie, and her confusion about the real identity of her father among others.

Considering the fact that to date, Yvonne doesn’t know her real father, the actress’ mother’s chastity has been questioned, with netizens wondering if she slept around with men to have sparked these consequences.

In that regard, Yvonne’s mother has had to also encounter the heat from netizens all over social media.

However, Afia Schwarzenegger, after analyzing the events, thinks it is totally unfair for Yvonne to project her mother in such a bad light.

According to her, Yvonne has ‘fed her mother to the dogs’ and that, there is no justification whatsoever to have treated the woman who birthed her in such a manner.

She said issues of this sort are best solved at home, away from the public.

“Writing a book to wash your dirty linen in public is NOT boldness but childishness at the highest degree (done that and outgrown it) Who in his or her right thinking mind will write a book to disrespect her mother….If I don’t know the real father of my children, if any of my children have to do a DNA to ascertain their paternity, then I the promiscuous mother should be ashamed of myself literally an Ashawo is even better. Couldn’t you have done that in private, with your family, or probably a pastor/ counsellor??” she wrote on Instagram.

She added, Yvonne should brace herself for some future actions posterity will take against her, adding that, this particular act of hers will prompt dire consequences someday.

“And we have grown IDIOTS who will gather at the comment section to defend this shameful act…those applauding you today will remind your daughter who her grandmother is. Beware of the things you do when you have a daughter.. I pray for you for strength the day your daughter will question you about your book. After publicly scolding a man who ended up NOT being your real dad, calling a family member out shouldn’t be your option. Would you have done the same if your Dad was Atta Ayi in Prison and NOT the former speaker??? Just asking. Children Obey thy parents is a commandment from God…So respect your mother no matter the situation cos you yourself have had your fair share of bad relationships…” she added.

  • Man who sexually assaulted a seagull in alleyway arrested

Man who sexually assaulted a seagull in alleyway arrested

A man who caught a baby seagull and masturbated over it while viewing porn in an alleyway was imprisoned.

The perplexing assault was carried out by David Lee in Sunderland in August of last year, in what the judge called “one of the most unusual cases” he had ever seen.

After pleading guilty to causing needless suffering to a protected animal, the 40-year-old was today given a 24-week term and a 10-year ban from keeping animals.

Lee was apprehended after a neighbourhood resident gave the police CCTV evidence showing him pursuing the bird at around one in the morning.

Prosecutor Lesley Burgess told South Tyneside Magistrates Court what happened in the video once the defendant had gotten hold of the seagull.

She said: ‘The defendant takes his phone out of his pocket. He thereafter takes down his trousers.

‘He then goes down – it’s very clear he is masturbating at the time. He then goes on to move the gull to between his legs.

‘For a time the defendant is engaging in a sexual act with the baby seagull. The defendant then stands back up.’

She added that Lee then picked up his phone and gave the bird a ‘little kick’ before walking off in the other direction.

The court also heard that police discovered Lee had been watching porn which involved animals when they searched his phone. The prosecution argued this would have distressed the seagull even more.

The woman who first reported the footage to the police told how she had been affected after having to watch Lee’s attack on the bird.

She said: ‘For almost a year the actions of this person have caused me a lot of mental stress and anxiety. I am unable to get the horrendous actions out of my head. I was haunted by what he did.

‘I sincerely hope the sentence gives justice to the bird he defiled. I hope it serves as a deterrent to anyone else who thinks animal abuse is acceptable.’

Lee had initially tried to claim that he was attempting to help an injured bird, using his phone to ‘locate a local vet’, but ended up pleading guilty before trial.

His defence lawyer, Annalise Moscardini, highlighted this plea and said it was ‘clearly an unusual offence’.

She said: ‘I would assess that as Mr Lee being unable to understand why he did what he did. There was a genuine disbelief about it.

‘There’s a part of time he doesn’t recall. He doesn’t remember a part of time due to drink. There’s certainly heavy alcohol use. There is not any attempt to cause it any harm.’

Ms Moscardini went on to explain that Lee suffers from a personality disorder, a detachment from reality and pathological lying.

The court was also told how Lee, of Roker Avenue, Sunderland, had served a prison sentence in 2020 for possession of a bladed article, for which he has another previous conviction for.

Chair of the bench Angela Thompson said: ‘We find this offence is a deliberate attempt to cause suffering and a high level of suffering was caused to the young bird.

‘We have considered the psychological reports and the mitigation from your solicitor.’

GWCL clears GHC 2.5m debt owed NEDCo resulting in restoration of power to firm

Power was restored to the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) treatment plant in the Northern Region after the company made a payment of GHC2.5 million out of a GHC39.7 million debt owed NEDCo.

The Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) cut power to the plant during an income mobilisation exercise to retrieve monies locked in debts.

Speaking in an interview with Accra-based Citi News, the corporate communication manager for NEDCo, Maxwell Kotoka, communicated that an agreement has been reached with GWCL and they are willing to pay regularly to clear the debt of GHC39.7 million.

“Further to the disconnection, they have come forward to engage some of which include the payment of the GHC2.5 million out of the GHC39.7 million debt plus a pledge to do a further payment by next week and a return to the regular payment that was existing until sometime back,” Maxwell said.

“So we are expecting that they fulfilL their promise next week and then pick it from there. We are not entirely satisfied with the agreement but we also appreciate that water is quite sensitive,” he added.

Today marks Prince William‘s 41st birthday, the first since he assumed the position of next in line to the throne.

King Charles has uploaded a social media post to wish them a happy birthday, as has become customary whenever a royal celebrates a birthday.

A picture of the father and son was published from the Royal Family’s official account.

The caption ended with an emoji of a balloon and stated, “Wishing the Prince of Wales a very happy birthday today.”

It shows William assisting his father with tying a ceremonial golden robe during a rehearsal for the Coronation ceremony earlier this year.

Your financial capacity determines if you can marry or not – Relationship coach

Reno Omokri, a Nigerian author and social media influencer, has expressed his opinion that a person’s financial status is the sole determining factor for their eligibility for marriage.

Reno claimed that being financially capable is the only requirement for marriage, as opposed to not being old enough or having good looks.

He made reference to the olden days stating that men without a farm never thought about having a wife.

Reno argues that it would be detrimental for a man to marry a woman who would eventually be forced into poverty and suffering.

Instead of worrying about the “bedroom,” Reno urged men to concentrate on their future and the challenges they are facing.

He wrote: “Your eligibility for marriage has nothing to do with your age or looks. One factor dominates determines if you are eligible for marriage. Your financial chemistry. Even in the olden days, a man without a farm had no business thinking about a wife. It is self harm to bring somebody’s daughter to join you in your suffering. Stop thinking of the bedroom and start focusing on the boardroom!”

Read the comments that trailed his tweet below:

IOnwuachusi: “This is the most reasonable thing you’ve said ever since you started attacking LP and Peter Obi”

Official_Camzik: “Your opinion is good and advisable sir, but reality has a way of playing its game. We have people that married while being poor with less education degree and live happily till today and we have people who divorce despite being wealthy and educated. Thanks.”

Jomoro MP comments on Quayson’s court case

Member of Parliament for Jomoro Constituency in the Western Region, Dorcas Affo-Toffey, has expressed sadness over the High Court’s decision to hear the case involving the deposed Assin North Member of Parliament, James Gyakye Quayson, on a daily basis.

The Attorney-General had argued for a speedy trial, requiring that the case be heard on a daily basis.

The defence team, led by Tsatsu Tsikata, urged the court to allow Mr. Quayson to run in the Assin North by-election on June 27, prior to the start of the case, but the Court ignored the request.

The High Court’s application to vary its order to hear the James Gyakye Quayson case on a daily basis on Tuesday, June 20, was postponed until Wednesday, June 21.

On her social media accounts, the Jomoro MP expressed her support for Mr. Quayson, as well as that of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the people of Assin North Constituency.

    Read below the full post:

“My attention has been drawn to the happenings in court today over my brother, Mr. James Gyakye Quayson’s trial. I am told the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice made a case for expeditious trial, therefore Mr. Quayson would make a daily appearance when the case begin. I wish to state that I am saddened by the move by the A-G despite the pleas by the defence counsel to grant him the opportunity to begin the case after the June 27 Assin North Constituency by-election.

I am deeply downcast upon hearing the denouement of your court proceedings today.

I can assure you, Mr. Quayson, that God will not fail you. The good people of Assin North will not fail you. The NDC fraternity will not fail you.
Once again I wish you well my brother. Love you ❤️”

  • Private school owners advocate for reduction in percentage of SSNIT contributions

Private school owners advocate for reduction in percentage of SSNIT contributions

Ghana National Association of Private Schools members have urged the government to change the contribution to the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT).

According to Rev. Kow Richardson, National Executive Member of Senior High Schools in Effutu and Former Chairman of Ghana National Association of Private Schools, who spoke to the press, private schools are facing uncontrollable challenges.

He explained his point by saying that taxes on private schools are breaking their necks, and as a result, most private schools have closed, particularly when it comes to paying SSNIT to their employees.

The founder and proprietor of Uncle Rich Schools lament that the government should eliminate some of the taxes on private schools in order for them to expand their operations and employ more people, thereby lowering the unemployment rate.

He believes that the payment of SSNIT CONTRIBUTIONS, which is mandatory for all employers to make for their employees, is a good thing, but the percentages on the payment are too high. For example, if the employer pays his employee Ghc1,000, he must deduct 13% of that amount, add 5%, and pay SSNIT contributions. How much will he be paid at the end of the month?

“The current rate is high. Assume you receive Ghc1000 and must pay SSNIT contributions of approximately GHC269. What would be left? I propose that the percentage be reduced by ten percent. The law should be amended by Parliament. We could consider a constitutional amendment when the person reaches the age of 50.”

Workers in Ghana are obliged to contribute to the SSNIT Scheme during their working life to receive monthly pensions during retirement or when incapacitated. Upon the demise of the contributor, his/her nominated persons will receive the survivor’s benefit in cash.

Membership of the SSNIT Pension Scheme is open to workers in both private and public sectors. Only Officers and men of the Ghana Armed Forces and Categories of persons explicitly stated by the 1992 Constitution of Ghana are expressly exempted. The scheme is also optional for the self-employed.

The primary responsibility of the Trust is to replace part of the lost income of workers in Ghana due to Old Age, Invalidity or Death of a member where dependants receive lump sum payment. It is also responsible for the payment of Emigration benefits to a non-Ghanaian member who is leaving Ghana permanently.

26-year-old man allegedly kills girlfriend over aborted pregnancy – Prosecution reveals

A 26-year-old man, Godwin Darko, has allegedly killed his girlfriend, Felicia Abena Oparebea, 23, at Trom Junction -5 in Koforidua.

The sad incident happened on Saturday, June 17, 2023 during a misunderstanding over aborted pregnancy.

The suspect is alleged to have questioned why the deceased terminated a pregnancy without his consent.

The prosecution revealed this during the first appearance of the suspect at Koforidua Magistrate Court “A” for committal processes on Tuesday, June 20.

The prosecutor, Sergeant George Defia said the suspect stabbed the girl multiple times in the neck killing her instantly in her room.

The suspect sneaked out of the house and confided in his mother who is a Queen mother of Suhum Nifa Ankobea who took the son to the police station to report himself.

The Prosecutor prayed the Court presided by Her Honour Nana Ama Dabbah Fynn to remand the suspect to enable police to conduct further investigation including search for the weapon used to commit the heinous crime.

The court adjourned the case to July 4, 2023.

Mother of the suspect, Nana Dede Klottey who is also Suhum Nifa Ankobea Hemaa said her son and the deceased girlfriend used to have many misunderstandings in their relationship which she tried to resolve only for this despicable incident to occur.

He pleaded to the family of the deceased to agree for meeting to prepare for the burial of the deceased as the criminal prosecution continues.

    Background

Some cotenants in the house where the incident took place at Trom Junction -5, had earlier told Kasaps News that the suspect visited the girlfriend at a time a naming ceremony was ongoing in the house.

The now-deceased girlfriend went out to meet the suspect outside and brought him to her room.

It appears the suspect killed the victim amid the noise of the naming ceremony, therefore, nobody heard the victim’s distressed scream for help.

He threw away the knife used to commit the gruesome act into a bush at the back of the house before sneaking out.

The body was retrieved from the cold blood by police after taking inventories of the crime scene and deposited the body at the morgue.

Police brought the suspect to the crime scene Sunday, June 18, 2023 in the afternoon around 12:noon to search for the knife used to commit the act but were not successful.

Some angry youth in the community thronged the scene and threatened to attack the suspect.

As tension rose, police whisked the suspect into a taxi and drove off.

  • Scammers invade Facebook marketplace

It appears scammers have invaded Facebook’s marketplace, posing a significant threat to unsuspecting buyers and sellers. The rise in online shopping, coupled with the rapid growth of Facebook Marketplace as a prominent platform for buying and selling goods apparently has attracted the attention of fraudsters seeking to exploit vulnerable users.

While some products may be genuinely selling (at the right price), it is evident that some products which range from electronics to furniture, to vehicles, etc. are also mere projections of scammers who are looking for an opportunity to dupe their unsuspecting victims.

This is evident through the amount some of these products are being sold at.
For instance, a Sony camera which sells on the average between GHC 5,652 to GHC21,542 is selling on the platform at GHC250. Also, a Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge which sells at GHC 3,465 has been projected by a user on the platform as selling at GHC400. Furthermore, a Samsung Galaxy A23 AGB which is selling at GHC 2,699 is selling on the platform by one user as GHC550.

However, in light of the surge in scams on Facebook Marketplace, consumers are advised to follow a few essential guidelines to protect themselves:
Verify Sellers: Check the seller’s profile for credibility, including reviews, ratings, and previous transactions. Be cautious of sellers with limited or no history on the platform.

Conduct Research: Before making a purchase, research the product, its market value, and typical pricing. If a deal appears too good to be true, it likely is.

Insist on In-person Transactions: Whenever possible, arrange to meet the seller in person and inspect the item before making payment. Exercise caution when dealing with sellers who refuse to meet in person.

Secure Payment Methods: Use secure payment options that offer buyer protection, such as PayPal or escrow services. Avoid wire transfers or direct cash payments.

Report Suspicious Activity: If you encounter a suspicious listing or suspect fraudulent behavior, report it to both Facebook and local law enforcement authorities.

By adopting these preventive measures and staying vigilant, users can help curb the prevalence of scams on Facebook Marketplace and protect themselves from financial loss or identity theft.

He reaffirmed the UK’s dedication to the war-torn nation’s rebuilding and praised their “defiance” at a conference in London today.

Additionally, Mr. Sunak unveiled a financial plan that includes three billion US dollars in loan guarantees from the World Bank over a three-year period.

According to Downing Street, the guarantees represent the first bilateral offer of long-term budgetary support to be outlined by a G7 nation.

The funding is expected to support public services, including the cost of running schools and hospitals.

To mark the two-day summit, hundreds of companies, including British venture Virgin and US bank Citi, have signed up to back Ukraine’s recovery and reconstruction.

Mr Sunak said: ‘As we’ve seen in Bakhmut and Mariupol, what Russia cannot take it will seek to destroy. They want to do the same to Ukraine’s economy.

‘The scale of the challenge is real. The war brought a 29% fall in Ukraine’s GDP last year, but just look at the streets of Kyiv, despite the threat of attack, people are getting on with their lives and getting on with business.

41 women murdered in Honduran jail gang riot

A gang fight that broke out at a prison in Honduras resulted in the deaths of 41 women by burning, stabbing, or gunfire.

The horrifying violence occurred on Tuesday in the town of Tamara, which is located outside of Tegucigalpa, the capital of the Central American nation.

According to President Xiomara Castro, the street gang known as the “maras” plotted the violence at the Centro Femenino de Adaptacion Social with the “knowledge and acquiescence” of the guards.

According to Sandra Rodriguez Vargas, assistant commissioner for the country’s jail system, the attackers’removed’ them from the prison at 8am and then started killing women and setting fires.

Another woman, who did not want to be named, said her 26-year-old friend Alejandra Martinez had told her ‘that 18 people had threatened them, that they were going to kill them if they didn’t turn over a relative.’

Victims of gang violence are sometimes forced to ‘turn over’ a loved one by revealing their name, address and description so gang-members can later kidnap, rob or kill them.

Gangs generally wield broad control inside Honduras’ institutions, something the government has being trying to crackdown on in recent months.

Tuesday’s bloodbath was likely a response to these efforts, the head of the country’s prison system Julissa Villanueva suspects.

‘We will not back down,’ she said in a televised address, while Ms Castro promised to take ‘drastic measures’.

Honduras and several of its neighbouring countries have histories of deadly prison incidents.

This appears to be the worst at a female detention centre in the region since 2017, when young girls at a Guatemalan institution set fire to mattresses.

They were protesting against rape and other mistreatment but 41 ended up dying from the smoke and flames.

Honduras saw the worst prison disaster in a century in 2012, when 361 inmates died at the Comayagua prison in a fire.

Honduran human rights expert Joaquin Mejia said: ‘The issue is to prevent people from smuggling in drugs, grenades and firearms. Tuesday’s events show that they have not been able to do that.’

  • Man stabs pupil eight times with 13-inch knife over joke

Man stabs pupil eight times with 13-inch knife over joke

A music producer was sentenced to prison after stabbing another student eight times over a skateboard joke.

On Wilmslow Road in Fallowfield, south Manchester, Luke O’Connor, 19, was hacked to death with a 13-inch “mafia stiletto” knife last year.

Shiloh Pottinger, 20, had responded ‘violently and abruptly’ to a joke that a friend of Luke’s had made about his skateboard.

At Manchester Crown Court yesterday, he was given a 15-year prison term after being convicted guilty of manslaughter during a trial.

Luke’s mother Carolyn O’Connor looked directly at Pottinger in the dock as she told the court: ‘I refuse your name to pass my lips because you don’t deserve it. Luke was the man you will never be.

‘He was a gentle giant and had a heart of gold, and the kindest of souls.’

His father Jason, a senior tech firm manager, said knives like the one used on his son had no place ‘in a civilised society’.

‘I feel intense shock, disbelief and denial,’ he added. ‘I miss Luke more than you could explain in words.’

The court heard a fight broke out at around 2am on October 26 after Luke’s friend, Charlie Robertson, asked to perform a ‘kick flick’ on Pottinger’s skateboard.

London BIMM university student Pottinger reacted ‘pathetically’ to the remark and started making threats of violence.

But Luke, a rugby player, instead stood up to Pottinger and laughed.

Pottinger, who was 19 at the time, initially used his skateboard to attack Manchester Metropolitan University student Luke, then stabbed him with the blade eight times before fleeing.

CCTV footage showed Luke left laying bleeding in the road.

Pottinger searched on the internet for ‘how long do you serve for killing someone?’ and ‘how much time do you get for knife murder?’ before his arrest two days later.

He told police he brandished the knife because he was ‘scared’ and wanted to ‘get away’ – but did not want to cause Luke ‘really serious harm’.

The defendant also said the weapon was a ‘fashion statement’.

Judge Nicholas Dean KC said: ‘In my judgment you bought it because it gave you a sense of empowerment to carry it.

‘One of Luke’s qualities was he stood up to bullies. That Luke stood up to you led you to attack Luke the way you did.

‘As Luke’s mother said: one person is to blame for Luke not being with her today. One person that chose to walk out of his house that night with a lethal weapon.

‘This person has shown no remorse and not taken any responsibility for his actions. That person is you, Shiloh Pottinger.’

He rejected Pottinger’s claims he bought the knife as a tool for his skateboard.

Luke’s family said in a statement outside court: ‘We are truly devastated by this tragedy. Luke was loved by so many people, and he knew how much he was loved in return.

‘We are relieved Shiloh Pottinger is now behind bars although his sentence in no way compares to our life sentence.’

  • I killed 2 Ghanaian virgins and ate their hearts – ‘Sakawa’ man confesses

I killed 2 Ghanaian virgins and ate their hearts – ‘Sakawa’ man confesses

A Nigerian fraudster, whose name has been withheld, has confessed to killing two virgins and eating their hearts as part of a money ritual.

The shocking revelation came to light during an interaction with a pastor, where the fraudster disclosed the details of his involvement.

According to him, a friend introduced him to a herbalist in Kumasi who promised to help them attain wealth. However, the herbalist instructed him to bring two virgins to be sacrificed on an altar.

“A friend took me to a herbalist in Kumasi. He gave me a ring and asked me to bring two virgins. When I brought them, he asked me to kill them and I did so with my bare hands. After I killed them, he asked me to take out their hearts and eat them, which I did because I wanted quick money. I ate the hearts alongside some alcohol,“ he confessed.

He further revealed that he was also asked to consume uncooked goat meat as part of the ritual, which marked the beginning of his wealth. He claimed to have made billions after making these sacrifices, gaining access to many Ghanaian celebrities and achieving fame. However, his prosperity was short-lived as he eventually started experiencing mental instability.

“I was going mad about a year ago. I even walked from Lagos to Warri (a distance of about 428.7 km), barefooted,” he said.

His confession confirms the practice of occult internet fraud or ritual killings, popularly known as Sakawa or Yahoo plus, which is reportedly one of the many illegal activities that some young people engage in to get quick money.

These activities have been on the rise in Ghana and Nigeria in recent years.

Unemployment has been cited as the major challenge which most Ghanaian youth face, which in turn creates economic hardships for young people who then decide to explore quick schemes to escape poverty.

Reports from Nigeria also indicate that the increase in the activity is “only a reflection of desperation for wealth and security amid creeping collapse of law and order.”

However, the act has been described as a threat to national security and the laws of both countries frown upon it.

Man in his 30s found dead in suspected suicide incident at Gomoa Nyanyano

A man in his 30s was discovered dead in a suspected suicide incident at Gomoa Nyanyano in the Central Region’s Gomoa District.

The young man was discovered hanging in an unfinished building.

He was discovered with sand samples on his head and some markings in the form of teeth bites on his shoulders.

According to residents, the young man is not known in the community.

Kwame Alex, reporting on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.,5Fm, said the body was discovered today, Wednesday, June 21, 2023.

The police were notified, and the body was later recovered and deposited at the mortuary.

He stated that a ladder and a shirt were discovered at the scene.

He went on to say that a further search of the body revealed a mobile device with the battery and sim card removed and placed in a black polythene bag.

Some residents, including the Assembly member, who spoke to the reporter, said they ruled out suicide because the way the man was hanging suggested he was murdered somewhere and brought to the scene by the people who killed him.

  • 4 big names in politics Yvonne Nelson mentioned in her book

4 big names in politics Yvonne Nelson mentioned in her book

Revelations in a memoir written by actress and film producer; Yvonne Nelson, rocked the entertainment industry in Ghana and even Africa following its release on Sunday, June 19, 2023.

Gurus in the industries including award-winning Ghanaian musician Michael Owusu Addo, popularly known as Sarkodie, and Nigerian musician Iyana, had experiences they had with the actress shared with the public.

Aside from persons in the entertainment industry, politicians in Ghana, including a former Speaker of Parliament, Peter Ala Adjetey, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and other past presidents of Ghana also featured heavily in Yvonne Nelson’s biography, which is titled ‘I Am Not Yvonne Nelson’.

Here is what Yvonne Nelson said about some notable politicians in her book:

    Peter Ala Adjetey:

The actress in her book, disclosed that at some point in her life, she was made to believe that Peter Ala Adjetey, a Speaker of Parliament of Ghana from 2001 to 2004, was her biological father and not the man whose name she bares; Mr Nelson.

The film-maker, after being told that Peter Ala Adjetey might be her father, went on a mission to get to know more about the man.

“Even without Googling, I knew Peter Ala Adjetey was tall, but that’s where our similarities ended. President John Agyekum Kufuor had a hand in the nomination of Peter Ala Adjetey as the second Speaker of Parliament of the Fourth Republic of Ghana. He was subsequently voted by members of parliament and sworn into office,” she wrote.

Unfortunately, things did not end well, as Yvonne who conducted a DNA test to finalise her conviction, was met with another shock that the former Speaker of Parliament isn’t her father either.

    Former President John Agyekum Kufuor

Yvonne Nelson disclosed in her book that the second president of the 4th Republic of Ghana, John Agyekum Kufuor was her confidant during the period she was trying to find out who her biological father was.

According to the actress, there were a lot of questions begging for answers, and she saw Mr. Kufuor as the right man to clear her thoughts.

Because the late Mr. Ala Adjetey was one of the persons former President Kufuor had closely worked with, Yvonne saw it as a good opportunity to dig more into his personality, as the physical features she had seen in pictures weren’t enough clues.

“Prior to that, Peter Ala Adjetey had served as the national chairman of the NPP from 1995 to 1998 and worked with Mr. Kufuor in that capacity, so the two knew each other well. Before the Fourth Republic, both men had been politicians in the 1980s, so I was speaking to the right man.

“It was when I spoke to former President John Agyekum Kufuor that he pointed out other invisible features that linked me to the politician he had worked closely with,” she wrote.

She then said that the former president advised her not to be consumed by her past and the things she has no control over, but rather focus on building on whatever gains she had made.

Yvonne added that Mr. Kufuor was elated that she had turned out great in spite of her father’s absence in her life.

“He said I should focus on building on whatever gains I had made and not brood over things I had no control over. He opened his doors to me and assured me of a listening ear if I ever needed any. I left feeling somewhat happy or relieved, but it was temporary,” she stated.

    Former President John Dramani Mahama:

Nelson also disclosed in her book that she received calls from ex-President John Mahama’s office, expressing his desire to meet her over a planned demonstration on the erratic power supply that was seen in the Mahama era, which became popularly known as dumsor.

However, she declined the invitation, insisting that her fellow protest organisers be present during the meeting. Despite pressure from the presidency for a one-on-one meeting, Nelson stood her ground, maintaining that a meeting without her colleagues would not take place.

“I also received calls from the office of President John Dramani Mahama. The callers said the president wanted to meet me, but I told them I would only meet with the president on condition that my fellow organisers of the protest would be part of that meeting. The officials at the presidency insisted that the president wanted to meet me alone. I stood my ground, stating that if the president was not prepared to meet me with my colleagues, then the meeting was not going to happen,” she said in her book.

Reflecting on the political landscape, Nelson acknowledged that the magnitude of the problem naturally offered political advantages to opposition parties.

    President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo

Aside from Sarkodie, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo was arguably the person who felt the heat most, from the release of; “I am not Yvonne Nelson’.

Yvonne Nelson expressed her disappointment over a picture she took with President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo during his election victory in 2016.

The memoir reveals that Yvonne Nelson and her friends visited the then president-elect Akufo-Addo to extend their congratulations shortly after the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and its candidate emerged victorious in the 2016 elections.

According to her, the opposition won the election because, at that time, the nation was grappling with a severe power crisis, known as “dumsor,” which had resulted in significant job losses and adversely impacted small-scale enterprises heavily reliant on electricity.

    She spoke about her involvement in the 2015 #DumsorMustStop protest before adding;

“A year later, the opposition NPP and its candidate won the 2016 election. The power crisis and its effects were a major sin of the incumbent National Democratic Congress (NDC). Dumsor had resulted in job losses and dealt a deadly blow to the small-scale enterprises that depended on electricity but could not afford alternative sources of power. Even though the NDC administration resolved the crises at a huge cost and through shady procurement deals, the victims of dumsor, corruption, and mismanagement could not forgive the party at the presidential and parliamentary polls.

“The NPP, led by Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, won massively in both the presidential and parliamentary elections. Some friends and I went to congratulate the president-elect, Nana Akufo-Addo, with whom we took a photograph. It is a photograph I regret taking.”

She added that Nana Akufo-Addo, who was presented as an incorruptible leader and the antidote to corruption in the public sector and political space, has fallen short of expectations.

“He was said to be incorruptible, and Ghanaians thought he was going to be the antidote to mass stealing at the highest level, which is euphemized as corruption. Unfortunately for Ghana and those who trusted in him, he has turned out to be a monumental disappointment whose government’s unbridled borrowing, corruption, and reckless spending plunged the nation into economic dumsor,” she wrote in her book dubbed; “I Am Not Yvonne Nelson.”

In her book, Yvonne Nelson, among other disclosures, revealed that she was contacted by a person close to the president to become the parliamentary candidate of the New Patriotic Party for the Ayawso West Wuogon Constituency in the 2020 general elections, which she declined.

Muntaka expresses ambition for presidency without resorting to violence or harm

Member of Parliament for the Asawase, Ibrahim Muntaka Mubarak, has stated his ambition of becoming the president of the Republic of Ghana.

Speaking in an interview on JoyNews, on Tuesday, June 20, 2023, the former minority chief whip said that he has all the competencies to lead the country, which is proven by his track record.

He added that every politician must aspire for top positions and should not limit themselves.

“You can’t be a politician and say that as for me the top-notch, I never want it in my life. But it is not something that I’m going to kill somebody to become.

“I have been a politician. I have served very well; I have all the credentials that it takes. I have distinguished myself to the best that I can and I want to believe that if the opportunity avails itself, why not? I will. I will be a contender and I will do that forcefully,” he said.

Asked about the possibility of becoming the ruling mate of the presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, the MP said that the best choice would be a purely Akan person.

He explained that even though he has lived in the Ashanti Region all his life if the running mate of Mahama is to be from the region, the person must be an Akan.

Police recover body in river as they search for a missing 22-year-old woman

In the course of looking for a 22-year-old woman who went missing five days ago, police discovered a body in a river.

On Friday, Sophie Rebecca Lambert vanished from her Starbeck, Harrogate, North Yorkshire, residence.

A member of the public discovered some of the young woman’s things nearby on Saturday morning, prompting North Yorkshire Police to say they were searching a river in the Nidd Gorge.

Today, North Yorkshire Police provided an update, stating: “Police searching for Missing Sophie Lambert in the Harrogate area have confirmed a body has been found in the River Nidd near Nidd Gorge on Wednesday morning.”

‘It is too early to confirm the identity, but Sophie’s family have been informed and are receiving specialist support.

‘We ask that their privacy is respected. We thank everyone who has supported the missing person appeal over the last few days.

‘A further update will be issued in due course.’

Her hair was tied back and she was carrying a bottle with a pink lid.

  • Russia warns US over missiles supply to Ukraine

Russia warns US over missiles supply to Ukraine

Russia has threatened the West with consequences if their long-range missiles touch down on its territory, especially Crimea, which it has occupied.

Sergei Shoigu, the defence minister for the Kremlin, has today warned the US and the UK that if they use their weapons beyond international borders, they would be viewed as full-fledged combatants.

Using such missiles “outside the zone of the special military operation would signify their full-fledged involvement in the conflict and will lead to immediate strikes on decision-making centres in Ukraine,” he emphasised.

Shoigu said: ‘According to our information, the leadership of the Ukrainian Armed Forces is planning to launch strikes on the territory of the Russian Federation, including Crimea, with HIMARS and Storm Shadow missiles.

‌’The use of these missiles outside the area of the special military operation would mean a full-fledged involvement of the US and UK in the conflict entailing immediate strikes on the decision-making centres in Ukraine.’

His comments come as Russian regions bordering Ukraine and Crimea have been hit by drones.

Though Kyiv has not commented on its involvement, these attacks include one on Putin’s residency in Moscow.

‌Shoigu’s claim that Crimea is part of Russia is disputed by the West – and international law – which regards it as Ukrainian.

‌Putin invaded and forcibly annexed the Black Sea peninsula in 2014 – the biggest land-grab in Europe since World War II.

The minister appears clearly rattled at the power of the British-supplied Storm Shadow with a range of 155 miles, which has been fired from Ukrainian Su-24 war planes.

So far Ukraine has used the Storm Shadow and US-provided HIMARS to hit targets in Russian-occupied areas of mainland Ukraine, not including Crimea.

‌Russia admitted today that it had lost another colonel in an earlier Storm Shadow strike close to Crimea, on the Arabat Spit.

‌Col Sergei Postovalov, 53, is due to be buried tomorrow after he was fatally wounded in June 10 strike which hit a Russian command post close to Henichesk minutes after Putin’s deputy premier Denis Manturov had visited.

Last night, the Royal Air Force (RAF) launched fighter jets to intercept a Russian military plane that was flying dangerously near to NATO airspace.

In the most recent aircraft skirmish, two Sukhoi Su-27 flankers and a Tupolev Tu-134 from the Russian Navy hovered dangerously close to NATO airspace Friday night.

Last night, the British air force posted images to Twitter of two RAF Typhoon warplanes flying over Estonia to meet the Russian aircraft.

‘This evening, RAF Typhoons from 140 EAW in Estonia were scrambled to intercept a Russian Navy Tu-134 and 2x Su-27 ‘FLANKER’ Bs flying close to Nato airspace,’ the RAF tweeted.

‘The Russian aircraft failed to comply with international norms by not liaising with regional airspace control agencies.’

In one photo, a Typhoon jet can be seen closely following the larger Tu-134 with ‘Baltic Fleet’ written on the side.

The Typhoons were assembled from the 140 Expeditionary Air Wing in Estonia

Similar scenes unfolded last month when RAF Typhoons set off from an Estonian airbase to intercept a Russian Air Force IL-20 ‘Coot’ A spy plane and Su-27 ‘Flanker’ B bomber.

The Typhoons were joined by Swedish Air Force Gripens.

But just a day later, Typhoons were redeployed to intercept one AN12 ‘CUB’ and one AN72 ‘Coaler’ flying south from mainland Russia towards the Kaliningrad Oblast.

They were later re-tasked to meet with ttwo Tupolev Tu-22M ‘Backfires’ and two Su-30 SM Flanker H, also flying south from mainland Russia over the Gulf of Finland and the Baltic Sea.

Banging heard during search for sub lost while looking at Titanic

Nearly two days after it vanished, there is new optimism that the crew of a Titanic tourist submersible that was en route to the sinking ship’s wreckage is still alive.

The OceanGate Expeditions submersible Titan, which vanished in the Atlantic Ocean while transporting five guests, has been the subject of a rescue effort since Sunday.

But in the early hours of this morning, when the submarine had less than 24 hours’ worth of oxygen left, search crews reported hearing “underwater noises,” which gave them optimism that there might be possible indications of life.

British wealthy explorer Hamish Harding, renowned French diver Paul-Henri Nargeolet, and Pakistani businessman Shahzada Dawood are among those still unaccounted for on the Titan.

On Monday afternoon (June 19), Rear Admiral John Mauger of the US Coast Guard said Titan had between 70-96 hours of oxygen left, sparking a race against the clock to find the craft.

The vessel submerged on Sunday morning (June 18), and its mothership – the Canadian research icebreaker MV Polar Prince – lost contact with it an hour and 45 minutes later.

Numerous fatalities occur in northern India over severe heatwave

As temperatures spike in the north and east of the nation, authorities in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh are looking into the deaths of at least 68 persons that occurred between Thursday and Sunday in the Ballia region.

The country’s meteorological bureau issued a warning about potential heat-related deaths before the recent spike in fatalities.

This week, according to AFP, temperatures in northern and eastern India reached 46 degrees Celsius (114.8 degrees Fahrenheit). In the summer months of May and June, the nation frequently experiences heatwaves, and climate change has increased the likelihood of a heatwave that sets new records.

But local officials have been unable to agree on the cause behind the spike of deaths, as critics accuse the government of not doing enough to prevent the deaths.

A local health official acknowledged heat may have been a factor in the deaths of 25 people on June 16. “In this temperature, most number of patients are victims of heatstroke, and it won’t take long before people are affected by heatstroke,” Dr. Diwakar Singh said.

According to the BBC, he went on to say: “Most of the patients were above 60 and had pre-existing ailments. These were exacerbated by the heat and they were brought to the hospital in serious condition. They died despite being given adequate treatment and medicines.”

But after he spoke to the media, Singh, Ballia district’s chief health official, was transferred overnight to another district in the province overnight, for “‘giving a careless statement on deaths caused by heatwave without having proper information,’” Indian Express reported.

Later, the Chief Medical Officer of Ballia, Dr. Jayant Kumar, said the spike in deaths was due to “various other ailments,” including old age.

“There is a team that has come to investigate the cause of death, a two-member committee comprising of health directors who are meeting the patients, they have taken water, urine, and blood samples for investigation. Once we get the report, then the situation will be clear to us,” Kumar said.

Another health director, Dr. N Tiwari investigating the deaths of patients admitted to the Ballia district hospital, said, “a detailed inspection has been done of the hospital, it is true that the heat is very high, patients who are admitted here are also suffering from the heat, however there have been arrangements that have been made to ease the situation inside the hospital.”

Akhilesh Yadav, an opposition political party leader and former chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, has criticized the government for the number of deaths that have taken place in the state.

“So many people across the state have lost lives because of the carelessness of the state government,” he told the press. “They should have warned the people about the heatwave. Not a single district hospital has been built in the last six years. Those who have lost their lives are poor farmers because they did not receive food, medicines and treatment on time.”

India’s Health Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya said the government is taking steps to address the heat wave and the surge in deaths, and officials would “hold discussions with the states which are continuing or likely to continue with heat wave so that appropriate decisions regarding heat stroke can be taken.”

India is among the countries expected to be worst affected by the impacts of the climate crisis, according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

In recent years, both the federal and state governments have implemented a number of measures to mitigate the effects of heatwaves, including shutting down schools and issuing health advisories for the public.

China and Pakistan agreed on $4.8 billion nuclear power plant deal

China and Pakistan agreed to a $4.8 billion contract on Tuesday to construct a 1,200 megawatt nuclear power facility, according to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. Pakistan regards China as its most trusted friend.

Following the signing of the agreement of understanding between China National Nuclear Cooperation and Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission, Sharif announced on state-run news station PTV that work on the Chashma 5 project will start right away.

According to Sharif, China’s $4.8 billion investment in this project “sends a loud and clear message that Pakistan is a place where Chinese companies and investors continue to show their trust and faith.”

The Chashma 5 project will be built in the central province of Punjab. China’s support will help Pakistan make the transition away from reliance on fossil fuels.

Pakistan’s total nuclear energy production capacity rose to 1,400 mw, when the country’s sixth nuclear power plant opened two years ago. Located in the southern port city of Karachi, that 1,100 mw plant was also constructed with Chinese assistance.

Sharif, whose government is desperately struggling to stave off a balance of payments crisis, thanked the Chinese partners for offering a $100-million discount for the latest project.

It is unclear whether the new investment is part of the $65 billion that China has pledged in infrastructure building for Pakistan under its Belt and Road Initiative.

The new project was originally planned to start a couple of years ago, and Sharif expressed thanks to the Chinese side for not rescheduling costs despite the long delay. Instead, he said, the Chinese had disbursed an initial $104.53 million (30 billion Pakistani rupees) to start the project.

I ‘believes in God and the legal system’ – Andrew Tate

The self-described “misogynist” online personality Andrew Tate made an appearance in court in Bucharest on Wednesday with his brother on allegations of rape and people trafficking.

As he arrived at the Bucharest Tribunal, Tate told reporters that he believes “in God and I believe in the justice system, and we are going to be OK.”

Four bodyguards were around him and his brother Tristan as they entered the courthouse, shooing reporters out of the way.

Andrew Tate replied to a reporter who inquired if he had committed rape: “Of course not, don’t ask me stupid questions.”

The pair looked in good spirits as they smiled and waved despite the seriousness of the charges that were laid against them on Tuesday, which include human trafficking, rape and forming a criminal group to sexually exploit women.

The judge is expected to rule on the pair’s house arrest and set a trial date.

The Tate brothers are the highest-profile suspects to face trial on human-trafficking charges in Romania.

They were placed under house arrest alongside two Romanian female suspects pending a criminal investigation for abuses committed against seven women – accusations they have denied.

Andrew Tate has also been charged with raping one of the victims, while his brother Tristan has been charged with instigating others to violence.

Prosecutors have said the Tate brothers recruited their victims by seducing them and falsely claiming to want a relationship or marriage.

The Tate brothers’ legal team said it “will embrace the opportunity to fight in court and present arguments and evidence” to prove their innocence, according to a statement obtained by CNN affiliate Antena3 in Romania.

In a recent interview with popular radio host Nana Romeo, the artiste emphasised the importance of maintaining a reasonable age gap and avoiding extreme differences, such as dating someone the age of his mother.

Amerado pointed out that if one were to analyse his dating history, one would notice that none of his partners have been younger than him. He has a natural inclination towards women who possess more life experience and maturity.

“My genuine preference lies in being attracted to women who are older than me, regardless of societal norms. However, it is important to note that the age gap should not be extreme, such as someone the age of my mother, but rather a reasonable difference of a year or a few years,” he said.

Contrary to popular misconceptions, Amerado clarified that his preference is not about exploiting older women, commonly referred to as ‘sugar mummies,’ for financial gain.

He emphasised that his attraction is genuine and stems from a desire to connect with someone who has acquired valuable life experiences and possesses a certain level of maturity.

“If you observe the women I have dated, you will find that none of them are younger than me. I gravitate towards women who are older,” he added.

Amerado also made it clear that his dedication to his craft as a rapper and his drive to succeed in his career contradicts the notion of solely relying on financial support from wealthy partners.

He emphasised that he works diligently and passionately, which demonstrates his commitment to his craft and his independence.

“It is not about taking advantage of sugar mummies for financial gain; rather, it is a genuine attraction to someone with more life experience and maturity,” he stated.

  • These 4 basic foods weaken your immune system

These 4 basic foods weaken your immune system

Overindulging in certain foods can potentially compromise your immune system‘s strength. The food choices you make significantly impact your overall health. While some meals may be considered nutritious, it’s important to note that they may not necessarily promote good health in every circumstance.

Food nourishes our body, providing us not just with energy to function, but also protecting ourselves from harmful germs and infections.

However, in this age of fast food, not every food that we eat is good for us. Instead, some of these consumed in high amounts or regularly can be harmful to our health and immune system.

Here are 4 food varieties you must avoid or limit as much as possible.

    • Sugar

Eating too much sugar can weaken the immune system. Now if you are conscious of your sugar intake, you might be avoiding adding white sugar to your daily tea, coffee or milk. However, sugar sneaks into our daily diet through foods we may not be aware of, such as ketchup and sports drinks. Also, if you have a sweet tooth and often give in to your urges to eat brownies and jalebis, you might be in trouble.

Sugar causes inflammation in the body, which is a leading cause of many diseases. Sugar can also suppress your immune system cells, which help your body by attacking viruses and bacteria.

    • Coffee

Drinking too much coffee can interfere with the body’s ability to absorb minerals such as iron and calcium. These minerals are important for a strong immune system. Too much caffeine consumption can also disrupt your sleep patterns, which can weaken the immune system over time.

    • Processed meat

Processed meat is that which has been preserved by curing, salting, smoking, drying or canning. This includes sausages, hot dogs, salami etc. Processed meat is often high in saturated fat, sodium, as well as chemicals that can weaken your immune system.

    • Alcohol

Heavy drinking can suppress your immune system, making you more vulnerable to infections. One such example is your lungs. It can impact the immune cells that protect your lungs, and also reduce the ability to remove mucus from your lungs. Alcohol can also interfere with your body’s ability to produce white blood cells, which are responsible for protecting your body from infections.

  • 3 healthy food foods to eat in-between meals for weight loss

3 healthy food foods to eat in-between meals for weight loss

Shedding excess weight is often more challenging than it appears. Achieving this goal requires engaging in rigorous workout routines, maintaining unwavering commitment to long-term objectives, reducing consumption of beloved foods or treats, and, above all, consistently prioritizing self-care by showing up daily.

It requires a lot of undeterred spirit within you to achieve your health goals.

However, to reach the end goal in the weight loss game, most people end up starving themselves and cutting down on everything, even the essential vitamins.

Most weight-loss diet plans press on dividing meals into smaller portions instead of feeding yourself sumptuously with three big meals a day.

Surely, weight loss demands you eradicate some foods from your diet, but in-between hunger pangs need to be fed mindfully with healthy foods.

While you are trying to stick to a weight-loss diet, you need to make smart choices for snacking in between meals. Here are some foods that can satiate your in-between hunger pangs and are satisfying and low in calories while supporting your weight loss goals. Check what experts recommend below:

    • Fruits and vegetables

These foods are high in vital nutrients, antioxidants, and fibre while being low in calories. Go for options such as apples, berries, carrots, cucumber, and celery. It always goes without saying how nutrient-rich fruits and vegetables are, for they help make up for any deficiency in your body healthily.

    • Hard-boiled eggs

Eggs are a good source of protein, which can help curb increased appetite. Hard-boiled eggs make an easy and portable snack.

    • Nuts and seeds

Almonds, walnuts, chia seeds, and flaxseeds are top choices as they provide healthy fats, fibre, and protein. Remember to consume them in moderation because of their higher calorie content.

  • Counterattack Ukraine has been vicious and ineffective – Report

Counterattack Ukraine has been vicious and ineffective – Report

The video is frightening and blurry. On what appears to be the southern front, a Ukrainian soldier from the 73rd Naval Special Operations Centre battles his way through a trench while firing frequently at close range Russian soldiers. The turmoil, intense panic, and savagery at the opening of this counteroffensive are all made worse by the dust that is being kicked up.

It would always require the kind of horrifying, face-to-face warfare depicted in the special forces film, and it was never going to be easy. However, the outcome of Ukraine’s assault still depends on its ability to outsmart and surprise Moscow’s forces, not in gruelling direct battle but rather on a more general strategic level. And this is perhaps the reason why this first stage of the project is starting slowly, sometimes incrementally.

For months, we have seen a patient bid by Ukraine to erode the readiness of Russian defenses. The slow drip of explosions at fuel depots, headquarters and on railway lines has been about weakening Russia’s ability to withstand and adapt to the first major assaults.

This painstaking work continues, with a reported blast Sunday in the occupied village of Rykove, in the Kherson region, that leveled an apparent ammunition dump. Open-source analysts have noted the huge blast pattern suggests significant secondary explosions. The attack is also, they noted, more than 100 kilometers (62 miles) inside enemy territory, suggesting either an acute lack of awareness among Russian ranks of the new dangers they face from longer-range NATO-supplied missiles, or an inability to adapt and alter their presence accordingly.

Rykove sits close to Crimea, in an area whose railway supply lines are already probably impaired by recent surgical Ukrainian attacks.

No single strike is terminal, but a slow accumulation of damage reduces Russian options and can, eventually, lead to cracks in their forces’ defensive network, or their basic ability to function. As Russia has moved to respond to Ukraine’s advances in recent weeks, it will have given away key signals about its readiness, supply issues and priorities. Western satellites are likely providing clear information about Moscow’s recalibrations to Kyiv.

At present, Ukraine appears to be keeping its options open. The priority is progress along the expansive southern front, which marks the valuable land corridor between occupied Crimea and the Donbas, and the Russia mainland. Most observers agree it is the singular goal of this counteroffensive to break that land bridge.

A Crimean peninsula isolated from the Donbas is much harder to resupply and defend, leaving Russian President Vladimir Putin with a stark choice: expose his military assets in Crimea to a long standoff, or cut his losses and pull them back.

Few analysts contend he can stomach the latter, and so we may face a long siege of the peninsula over the winter months, as Kyiv returns Moscow to the boundaries it stole in 2014-15, or worse. It is arguably a symbolic defeat for Moscow (and a definable victory for Kyiv) to see Russia’s past 16 months of carnage and losses end in no strategic gain.

The question for July is how this is achieved. Ukraine has been making the greatest public noise about its advances around Velyka Novosilka, to the southeast. Here the recent seizure of Blahodatne puts the 68th Brigade perilously close to occupied Volnovakha and its railway tracks leading to the vital occupied city of Mariupol.

Most of the villages Ukraine has publicly liberated lie in this direction. It is part of a costly and torturous push into Russian lines that, according to drone operators whom CNN met in late April, were acutely ready for attack, pulling back parts of their heavy equipment away from the front.

Ukrainian progress too is noted far to the west of Zaporizhzhia region, near Orikhiv. It has also been grueling, with Ukrainian losses reported around Mala Tokmachka, and now intense fighting near Pyatykhatky. Some pro-Russian bloggers have suggested the village has already been liberated.

Igor Strelkov, formerly the head of the Donetsk People’s Republic militia and now an occasional critic of the Russian military, said Tuesday heavy fighting had broken out in Zherebyanki, to Pyatykhatky’s west, a move that hints Ukrainian forces might be aiming to cut off the larger occupied town of Kamyanske along the Dnipro River.

This angle of advance – toward the occupied city of Melitopol – appears the more likely and profitable for Ukraine. While this front is braced for attack and heavily defended, it is closer to Zaporizhzhia city and to Ukrainian resupply, providing a helpful approach for Kyiv’s forces on to the Crimean peninsula. But to make significant progress, they will be counting on at least a partial Russian collapse somewhere along this elaborate trench network.

This defense is layered: the first trenches that Ukraine will hit will not be the last. But at some point, Russia’s elaborate systems of WW1-era dugouts and more modern minefields may give way, and then the Sea of Azov is an open drive across flat territory.

To keep Russian forces guessing yet still, Ukrainian gains are regularly trumpeted around Bakhmut, a city of minimal strategic significance whose center was captured by Russia at enormous cost last month. Moscow can hardly afford the loss of face of a reversal of fortune here. Finally, there are repeated reports of clashes to its north, around Kupyansk and Kreminna – yet another possible angle for a better-prepared Ukrainian force to advance. The aim is to force Russia into uncomfortable choices about where to send reinforcements.

Ukraine’s top commander, General Valerii Zaluzhnyi, may not yet know where he will sink the bulk of his newly trained and equipped forces. Some estimates suggest only a quarter of Ukraine’s fresh units, bolstered by NATO training and supplies, are now in the fight. Zalyuzhnyi has said nothing about his plans yet. He may be waiting to see where ammunition and resupply worsens first, or where Russia appears unwilling to sink extra reserves.

The wait is not without political cost. Kyiv needs to cement a change in the frontlines to validate the huge investment in its forces made by NATO. It should be acutely aware that elections in several countries over the next two years will likely alter the West’s appetite to bankroll Ukraine’s defense, regardless of how unwavering the West’s public commitments are. There is a risk that the background rumble of peace talks comes to the fore in winter, and Ukraine finds itself settling into a stalemate of the boundaries established by this November.

Yet there is reason for optimism in Ukraine’s capital. Last summer, silence and gridlock eventually turned into a Russian collapse around Kharkiv. The withdrawal from Kherson showed too that Moscow was still then able to recognize realities and react to them. Putin’s top brass will have learned from last year’s defeats, and he likely will be enormously emotional about the fate of Crimea.

But, as the world has seen in graphic detail, the Russian military’s failings are abundant and losses horrific – and any steep tactical learning curve will not have been matched by a similar improvement in training and equipment. Russia has one option, to endure and hope this winter cements the survival of its current occupation. Ukraine has many choices ahead of it, and a significant surplus of resources to pounce on opportunities, even as the clock is now loudly ticking.

  • Fighting with your partner increases your life span – Study

Fighting with your partner increases your life span – Study

A recent study published in the Journal of Biobehavioral Medicine suggests that engaging in disagreements or arguments with your partner may have potential benefits for both individuals and their relationship. The study reveals that couples who exhibit similar fighting styles are more likely to experience longer and healthier lives.

The researchers studied 192 couples for a time period of over 32 years, and the aim of this study was to figure out how a person’s behaviour impacts their partner’s mortality. Each couple was asked questions related to how they react to a conflict in their relationship. Do they like to bottle up their emotions, isolate themselves, overreact to the situation or prefer to blurt out whatever is going on in their mind?

The researchers concluded that couples who have a similar way of responding to a fight tend to live longer than the ones who have different response styles. For instance, if a partner prefers to vent out his or her anger and the other does the same, they have a greater chance of leading a longer life.

The researchers also opined that the best way to deal with a conflict is to talk it out rather than bottling up your emotions. Staying silent on things that bother you never lead to a solution, right?

Well, people who express their true feelings and opinions to their partner tend to have fewer fights and figure out mutually-acceptable decisions. Most importantly, venting out emotions helps to understand your partner and relationship better, and has a positive impact on your spouse’s health.

So, the next time you have an argument with your partner, pay attention to the way you both respond to the situation. In case you feel dissatisfied after the conflict is over or notice you have different ways to cope with it, it’s a good time to discuss this subject with your significant other.

Palestinian villagers attacked after Israeli settlers killed

Following the killing of four Israeli Israelis in the occupied West Bank on Tuesday, dozens of Palestinian villages were attacked by settlers overnight, a Palestinian official who tracks settler violence said CNN on Wednesday.

Ghassan Douglas, the official, estimates that at least 37 locals were hurt by live or rubber-coated bullets, stones or tear gas.

He said that 147 vehicles, including an ambulance, were hit by stones or set on fire, in addition to 23 houses, 16 shops, and crops burned in fields.

  • Chinese authorities rule over food scare that caused rage

Chinese authorities rule over food scare that caused rage

Chinese authorities have determined that an odd object discovered in a school meal was the head of a rat, contradicting earlier official assurances that it was duck neck in the most recent development to a food safety scandal that has rocked the country for weeks.

The controversy has also revealed the public’s strong mistrust of local governments in China, whose attempts to suppress bad news frequently fail.

On June 1, a student at the Jiangxi Industry Polytechnic College in the Jiangxi province’s southeast found something strange in his meal at the school canteen, which is when the issue got started.

In a video he posted on Chinese social media, the student picked up the dark hairy object with his chopsticks and complained to the canteen staff that he had found a rat’s head.

“This is duck meat,” a female staffer replied.

“Isn’t this rat’s teeth?” the student said, turning the object to reveal the tiny white pieces in the middle and the shape of a nose above.

“This is duck meat, duck meat,” the staffer insisted. “How could there be teeth in duck meat?”

The video went viral and caused a stir in China, where food safety has long been a major issue of public concern following scandals involving contaminated baby milk powder and “gutter oil” – recycled oil tainted with food waste or even sewage.

Chinese authorities have since tightened regulation and carried out periodic crackdowns, but food safety scandals, including in student canteens, have continued to make headlines and spark public outcries.

In the latest incident, the video sparked heated online discussions. Many comments sided with the student, citing the object’s uncanny resemblance to the head of a rodent, with seemingly identifiable eyes, nose, mouth and ears.

As public pressure mounted, the college issued a statement on June 3 claiming the object shown in the video was not a rat’s head, but a piece of duck neck, which is a popular delicacy in China.

“Our investigation found that the video was indeed shot at our school canteen but its content does not match the facts,” the statement said. It said the student had invited classmates to look at the object and confirmed it was duck neck, and had submitted a written clarification.

The school added that the local district’s market regulator had sent law-enforcement officers to the canteen to investigate.

On the same day, an official at the district’s market supervision bureau appeared on the Jiangxi Radio and Television Station, saying officers had “repeatedly compared the object and confirmed it was indeed a piece of duck neck.”

Meanwhile, a “clarification” video of the student circulated online. “I found out it was not a rat head but a duck neck, so I would like to clarify,” the student said in the video.

CNN has reached out to the school for comment.

The official findings and the student’s “clarification” failed to convince the public.

Instead, it fueled even more anger online, with users accusing the school and local officials of lying and pressuring the student to change his stance.

Some called for an investigation into what they believed to be a “cover-up” by the local authorities. Others reacted with sarcasm, and an outpouring of memes flooded the Chinese internet.

Many shared photoshopped images planting a mouse’s head onto the body of a duck (including a fusion of Disney characters Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck), claiming it was a newly discovered creature called “duckrat.”

Others reinvented the Chinese idiom “calling a deer a horse,” derived from a famous story in the Qin Dynasty, in which court officials pointed at a deer and called it a horse to prove their loyalty to a powerful eunuch.

“In ancient times we have ‘calling a deer a horse.’ Now we have ‘calling a rat a duck,’” said a post on Weibo with nearly 30,000 likes.

In the face of mounting public criticism and ridicule, the Jiangxi government announced on June 10 it had launched a provincial-level probe into the incident, with a task force joined by officials from education, public security and market supervision authorities.

A week later, the provincial investigation team concluded that the foreign object was not a piece of duck neck, and the local market supervision bureau and the school had reached a “wrong conclusion” because they did not investigate “diligently.”

Surveillance footage showed the object found by the student had been disposed of by canteen staff on June 1, according to the provincial team, which said it had checked the canteen’s purchase list, interviewed kitchen staff and students at the scene.

Animal experts who examined videos and photos of the item ruled it was the head of a rodent, the team said.

The canteen’s license has been revoked and the company that operates it had received a maximum penalty under food safety laws, the statement said. Officials at the college and the local market supervision bureau will also be punished, it added.

“This is how the government lost its credibility,” one Weibo comment said.

The controversy has also drawn the ire of the mouthpiece of the ruling Chinese Communist Party.

In a commentary, Xiakedao, an account under the overseas edition of the People’s Daily, censured local authorities for attempting to cover up the truth.

“So many administrative resources were wasted, and the credibility of the local government was damaged, and the loss has totally outweighed the gain!” it said.

“This kind of absurd incident of ‘calling a rat a duck’ cannot be repeated again!”

  • More than four Israelis reported dead in gunfire in West Bank

More than four Israelis reported dead in gunfire in West Bank

Israeli officials and emergency services said Tuesday that gunfire in the West Bank town of Eli resulted in four fatalities and four injuries.

According to CNN archives, it was the bloodiest attack on Israelis since January.

According to a joint statement from the two agencies, one of the suspected gunmen was killed at the site by a bystander, while the other was slain by Israel Defence troops (IDF) and Israel Security Agency troops after they located the vehicle he was driving.

The four wounded were taken to hospitals in Jerusalem or Petach Tikva, the Magen David Adom rescue service said.

Hamas, the Palestinian militant movement, claimed the two gunmen as members, calling the attack “a natural response” to the Israeli raid on Jenin a day earlier that left six Palestinians dead.

The shooting attack began in a restaurant near a gas station, where two gunmen shot dead three civilians, said Moti Bukchin, a spokesman for the Zaka rescue service.

The gunmen then came out of the restaurant and fatally shot a civilian refueling his car at the gas stations, Bukchin said.

Another civilian shot and neutralized one of the gunmen while the second fled, the Zaka spokesman said. Zaka is handling the bodies of the four dead, he said.

Maj. Nir Dinar, an Israel Defense Forces (IDF) spokesperson, said the terrorist who had been neutralized at the scene was dead.

The four Israelis killed were named by their communities as Elisha Antman, 18, and Ofer Fierman, 63, both from Eli; Harel Masoud, 21, from Yad Binyamin;and Nahman Shmuel Morduf, 17, from Ahiya.

Far-right Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir went to the scene of the shooting and called for settlers to arm themselves.

“I’m calling on the residence of Judea and Samaria to carry weapons,” he said, using the Biblical names that Israel officially uses to describe the West Bank. “They save lives…. We are sitting here like ducks in a barrel.”

Ben Gvir called for Israel to be more aggressive in the West Bank: “Return to the targeted killings, pull down buildings, put up roadblocks, deport terrorists, and put into law the death penalty for terrorists.”

Israeli Security Agency, known as Shin Bet, and IDF forces later “shot and neutralized” the second suspect, according to a joint statement from the two organizations.

Shin Bet tracked a Toyota vehicle in which the suspect fled, the statement said.

“During the arrest attempt, the suspect tried to escape from the vehicle, was shot and neutralized by the forces. No injuries to our forces,” the statement said.

The statement said a weapon used in the attack was found in the car.

Israeli troops had set up roadblocks in the area, the IDF said.

Residents of Eli were told to stay in their homes while the search for the second gunman was ongoing.

The chief IDF spokesperson, Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari, said in a statement that the IDF did not have intelligence information warning of the attack before it happened.

Hamas later claimed the gunmen as members, and said they were acting in response to a huge firefight in Jenin on Monday.

“We mourn the martyr Muhammad Shehadeh, and we affirm that the operation south of Nablus is a clear message to the criminal occupation government,” Hamas said in a statement referring to Israel.

Hamas said Shehadeh was 26 and from the village of Urif, southwest of Nablus. The other gunman was named as Khaled Sabbah, 24, from Tubas in the West Bank.

Videos from his home village showed a funeral procession and burial for him shortly after he was tracked down and killed by the IDF and Shin Bet.

Photographs on social media suggested that the two were friends.

The shooting “came as a natural response to the Jenin massacre yesterday,” the militant group said.

Tuesday’s shooting is the deadliest attack on Israelis since January 27, CNN records show. Seven Israelis were killed in the January attack near a synagogue in the Neve Yaakov area of Jerusalem.

Neve Yaakov is built on land which Israel captured in 1967, which makes it a settlement under international law. Israel unilaterally annexed it along with other parts of east Jerusalem in 1980, and considers it a neighborhood of Jerusalem.

There are now fears of attacks by settlers against Palestinians in revenge for Tuesday’s shooting.

The Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Tuesday called for “urgent and genuine international intervention, particularly from the United States,” to prevent “escalating attacks.”

It warned of a “planned explosion” by “extremist elements,” referring to Israeli settlers.

The latest violence comes a day after an Israeli military raid in the city of Jenin killed six Palestinians, including three militants, and injured 90 others. Eight Israeli military personnel were injured in the incursion to arrest two wanted Palestinian suspects.

While the Palestinian ministry released its statement, the US Ambassador to Israel, Tom Nides, condemned the killing of the four Israelis Tuesday.

“I condemn in the strongest terms the senseless murder of four innocent Israelis today — my heart is with their grieving family members,” Nides said on his official Twitter account. “Deeply concerned about the civilian deaths and injuries that have occurred in the West Bank these past 48 hours, including that of minors. Praying for the families as they mourn the loss of loved ones, or tend to those injured.”

Nides is married to CNN executive vice president of news Virginia Moseley.

Late Monday, after the Jenin raid and before the shooting near Eli, a State Department spokesperson said the US “urges de-escalation between Israel and the Palestinians.”

“Violence over the last day has left many Palestinians killed and resulted in injuries among Palestinians and the IDF, including in Jenin,” the spokesperson told CNN. “We call on both sides to refrain from actions that escalate tensions.”

Former 2020 NPP parliamentary candidate aspirant apprehended for theft and fraud

Vincent Acheampong, who is a self-styled car dealer, currently faces multiple charges at the Suame Divisional Police Command as well as the Ashanti Regional Police Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for his criminal activities.

The suspect, who has multiple cases lodged against him by his victims in various parts of the country, was arrested at his hideout around Breman UGC, a suburb of Kumasi, after playing several months of hide-and-seek with the security agencies that have been on a manhunt for him.

His modus operandi was taking vehicles from prominent car dealers under the guise of selling them on their behalf and then absconding with no trace of either the money or the vehicles.

In a case in point, he is confirmed to have taken a vehicle belonging to a Tamale-based journalist, traded it, and taken a vehicle belonging to a Kumasi-based businessman with the promise of topping him up. Vincent Acheampong, who is also a former NPP Constituency Executive for Offinso North, went into hiding, and despite several attempts to retrieve the cross-country vehicle in question, they proved futile. When pressure was mounted on him to produce the vehicles, he issued a number of cheques with a face value of GHC190,000. The cheques were dishonoured by the respective banks because the accounts were dormant.

An official complaint was lodged with the Suame Police, who, after several months of trailing, arrested him on Monday, June 19, 2023.
