UK based Ghanaian teenager murders father

Ghanaians living in Queens, a suburb of the City of New York in the United States of America, have reportedly been thrown into a state of shock following the alleged killing of a man by his teenage son.

There are currently limited details available about the incident but the deceased is reported to have been beaten to death by his teenage son at home during a misunderstanding.

However, a video shared by Oman Channel on YouTube shows several members of the Ghanaian community in a state of mourning while the body of the deceased man was being carried away by officers of the New York City Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

“That’s my brother being carried away. Noah, is that you? You have come to live abroad for so many years. May your soul rest in peace… God be with you,” a man could be heard saying in the Akan language.

Another Ghanaian woman, unable to hold back her tears, said, “All I ask of you is for your spirit to deal with the person that did this to you.”

The incident is said to have occurred on June 12, 2023, in Queens.

This comes on the back of a recent incident in Columbus, in the State of Ohio, where a Ghanaian man killed himself after shooting his wife.

The man identified as Michael Amoako is said to have shot his 50-year-old wife after she allegedly threatened to leave him to marry her ex-lover back in Ghana.

The deceased left behind an audio recording detailing his grievances and final wishes to his family.

His wife has since been in intensive care after suffering critical injuries from the incident.

Trump pleads not guilty over confidential documents at a Miami courthouse

In a Miami courtroom, former president Donald Trump entered a not guilty plea to federal charges in the case involving the sensitive documents.

On Tuesday afternoon, Trump was taken into custody and lodged at the Wilkie D. Ferguson Jr. US Courthouse on federal charges.

A US Marshals Services official reported that the booking procedures for Trump and his close friend and co-defendant Walt Nauta were finished at 2:05 PM.

‘We most certainly enter a plea of not guilty, one of Trump’s lawyers, Todd Blanche, told the judge, according to The New York Times.

Trump did not have a mugshot taken, according to one of his lawyers, Alina Habba.

‘President Trump is in a very unique position where he does not need to be given a mugshot, obviously,’ Habba told reporters outside the courthouse.

‘He’s not a flight risk. He is the leading candidate of the GOP at the moment. He is going through a process that has been coordinated with the Secret Service and it will all be handled seamlessly.’

Trump entered the courtroom for his initial appearance around 2.45pm.

The ex-president arrived at courthouse shortly before 2pm to surrender on criminal charges around his handling of classified documents. His motorcade arrived about an hour before his scheduled 3pm arraignment and drove into an underground garage.

Trump supporters cheered as the motorcade drove in.

Hundreds of Trump fans and hundreds of reporters waited outside the courthouse for him to leave, The New York Times reported. There were also a smaller number of Trump opponents present.

Trump faces 37 felony counts around his alleged mishandling of classified documents that he took with him after leaving the White House to his Mar-a-Lago home.

Magistrate Judge Jonathan Goodman is presiding over the arraignment.

Nauta also arrived at the Miami courthouse on Trump’s motorcade. His lawyer Stanley Woodward entered the building separately. Nauta did not have a mugshot taken.

Special counsel Jack Smith, who is overseeing the Justice Department’s probe on the classified documents, is attending the arraignment.

Trump’s lawyers Blanche and Chris Kise were expected to appear with the him in the courtroom.

The ex-president’s last post on his Truth Social platform before he entered the courthouse was: ‘ONE OF THE SADDEST DAYS IN THE HISTORY OF OUR COUNTRY. WE ARE A NATION IN DECLINE!!!’

The trial will be overseen by a Trump appointee, Judge Aileen Cannon, who was randomly assigned. Cannon has previously issued rulings favorable to Trump.

Former First Lady Melania Trump was reportedly in New York City.

Meanwhile, dozens of reporters waited at Trump’s golf club in Bedminister, New Jersey, where he is expected to deliver remarks at 8.15pm.

Russian soldiers ‘filmed killing brothers trying to flee front line’

In horrifying video, it appears like Russian forces are beheading other soldiers who are attempting to flee the battlefield.

At least seven combatants can be seen sprinting across an open stretch of ground towards a forest in a video shot by a Ukrainian drone.

When three armed guys wearing the same outfit emerge from the trees, some of them let go of their helmets.

According to the Kyiv Post, these troops are most likely a part of a “barrier unit with the mission of preventing soldiers from fleeing from battle and using lethal force if necessary.”

This alleged unit pushes two of the fleeing troops back and then fires warning shots into the air.

Several soldiers drop to the ground before trying to crawl away but their own comrades seemingly open fire on them while they are on the floor.

Once all seven figures have stopped moving, the three men appear to go from body to body, presumably checking each one is dead.

The 14-second video was first posted by Telegram channel Look for Your Own – a project set up with the backing of Ukraine’s Ministry of Internal Affairs to help the relatives of captured Russian soldiers identify them.

The Ukrainian Independent Information Agency, a local news agency, said on Monday it had confirmed the authenticity of the video.

Last November, the British Ministry of Defence said the Kremlin has ‘probably’ started using ‘barrier troops’ to block people from leaving the frontline.

This tactic was deployed by the Red Army and regularly used by Joseph Stalin during the Second World War.

A political adviser on post-Soviet and international politics, Jason Jay Smart, told Newsweek: ‘Russians shooting their own troops has a long tradition in Russian military history, and it has been commonplace throughout this war.’

Vladimir Putin’s troops are currently facing a Ukrainian counter-offensive, which has seen one of the Kremlin’s top generals killed.

Major-general Sergey Goryachev, 52, died during fighting in the Zaporizhzhia region, making him one of 11 generals to be officially classed as casualties in the war.

Just this morning, Russia suffered a major explosion at a key oil refinery inside its own borders in the city of Krasnodar.

Footage shows the diesel processing facility in flames, with thick noxious black smoke coming from it.

Krasnodar is a key link in Putin’s war effort and a hub for supplying occupied Crimea.

Putin’s £1 billion clifftop palace, which boasts an underground bunker, pole-dancing boudoir, and vineyard, is less than 80 miles away from the blast.

The suspected drone attack was reported by local Kuban News, which said more than 130 firefighters were called to the scene.

Yesterday, Ukraine claimed it had retaken three villages in what it dubbed its first victories since the counter-offensive began.

Moscow is yet to confirm the fall of any of the villages, instead speaking of repelling Ukrainian assaults in the region.

Protesters flood Miami court ahead Trump arraignment as police prepare in riot gear

In advance of former President Donald Trump‘s arraignment in the investigation into his handling of secret papers, protesters thronged the perimeter of a federal court in Miami.

Thousands of Trump supporters and detractors were anticipated to congregate Tuesday surrounding the Wilkie D. Ferguson Jr. US Courthouse in advance of the former president’s scheduled appearance at 3pm. Hundreds of Trump fans, media personnel, and detractors were present as of early afternoon.

Trump faces 37 felony charges related to his alleged mishandling of classified documents he kept after leaving the White House and took to his Mar-a-Lago home. Thirty-one of the counts relate to secret or top secret classified records. Trump has also been charged with obstructing justice, making false statements, conspiracy and concealment.

Law enforcement officials have erected steel barricades around the courthouse and helicopters flew overhead to monitor the scene.

Miami Police Chief Manuel Morales said they have deployed enough manpower to deal with a crowd from 5,000 to 50,000 people.

‘We are ready, and we’re ready for it to be over and done,’ said Morales.

Cops in riot gear arrived in trucks, the Daily Mail reported.

Trump’s arraignment and trial will unfold in the US District Court in the Southern District of Florida.

The former president will be ‘processed’ in loose custody of the US Marshals instead of ‘arrested’, an official with knowledge on the preparations told CBS News. Trump will not have a mugshot taken, officials said. He will be fingerprinted and have his date of birth, Social Security number and address taken.

Trump is not expected to be handcuffed.

It will mark the first time that the Justice Department has charged a former president with a crime.

Trump will have been charged with a crime twice. In April, he pleaded not guilty to 34 felony counts of falsifying business records in Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s investigation into a hush payment to a porn star.

The former president told Fox News that he plans to plead not guilty in the classified documents case.

Both Trump and special counsel Jack Smith, who is overseeing the investigation, arrived in Miami on Monday.

The ex-president spent the night at his Trump National Doral resort. After his court appearance, Trump will fly to his golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey, where he is expected to deliver remarks at 8.15pm.

‘ONE OF THE SADDEST DAYS IN THE HISTORY OF OUR COUNTRY,’ wrote Trump on his Truth Social platform about an hour-and-a-half before his scheduled court appearance. ‘WE ARE A NATION IN DECLINE!!!’

Rishi expresses gratitude to the rescue services after ‘shocking’ deaths in Nottingham

The emergency services‘ response to this morning’s “shocking incident” in Nottingham has been acknowledged by Rishi Sunak.

“My thoughts are with those injured, as well as the family and loved ones of those who have lost their lives,” the prime minister continued.

Three persons were slain earlier this morning after police in Nottingham’s downtown area declared a major incident.

Police were called to Ilkeston Road just after 4am where two people were found dead in the street.

Officers were then called to another incident in Milton Street where a van had attempted to run over three people. They are currently being treated in hospital.

A man has also been found dead in Magdala Road.

Police have arrested a 31-year-old man on suspicion of murder and he remains in police custody.

Nottingham Forest football club also paid tribute to those who have lost their lives.

It said: ‘We are devastated to learn the news of the horrific events that took place in Nottingham this morning.

‘The thoughts of everyone at #NFFC are with the friends and families of those who have tragically lost their lives and to everyone affected by this incident.’

Nottingham’s three Labour MPs, Nadia Whittome, Lilian Greenwood and Alex Norris, said they were ‘shaken’ by the events in the city.

A joint statement posted on Twitter by Ms Whittome said: ‘Our city has been devastated by the deaths of three people this morning.

‘Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and loved ones of those who have died and those injured.

‘We are grateful for the efforts of the city’s emergency responders in tackling these incidents. They must be allowed to do their jobs in investigating them.

‘Nottingham is a beautiful city, home to brilliant people from all backgrounds.

‘We are shaken by today’s events but will meet them collectively as a community and heal together.

‘Nottinghamshire Police has set up a dedicated line for anyone with information on this morning’s incident or with concerns about a family member or friend.’

Prince William unveils ‘homely’ new apartments for young people on the street

A new, ‘homely’ building of reasonably priced apartments that will assist 33 young people in escaping homelessness has won the approval of Prince William.

After the development of Reuben House by the charity for the homeless Centerpoint was finished, he formally opened it in Peckham, southeast London.

Each 21-square-meter apartment provides each resident with their own open-plan bedroom, kitchen, and living space, as well as an en suite bathroom, catering to people who have been able to acquire employment or an apprenticeship but are unable to afford a place to live.

Opening the site on Tuesday, William, who is a patron of Centrepoint, said: ‘It’s just about that first step and you start from there. You can replicate it anywhere.’

After touring the property and meeting residents, he told supporters: ‘Incredible the space you get up there, and it feels homely.’

Rents are capped at a third of each tenant’s income as part of the charity’s wider Independent Living Programme.

This means a typical 20-year-old earning the minimum wage would pay around £400 per month – less than half the going rate for other studio flats in comparable areas.

The programme, available to people aged 18 to 25, offers a ‘stepping stone’ to people at homeless shelters, temporary accommodation and other situations such as sofa-surfing.

For people who are struggling to search for jobs or hold them down due to their living arrangements, such as those sleeping rough, Centrepoint offers a variety of other accommodation types which may be more suitable.

The charity stresses the Independent Living Programme is available to people who have not used its accommodation before.

Bosses say they plan to build a total of 300 units in London and Manchester in the coming years.

  • 2024 election will start at 7am and end at 3pm – EC

2024 election will start at 7am and end at 3pm – EC

The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has proposed significant reforms aimed at improving the electoral process and ensuring a smooth and efficient voting experience for all citizens. One of the key proposals put forward by the EC is to adjust the voting time and close polling stations at 3pm instead of the previous practice of closing at 5pm.

The presidential and parliamentary election in 2024 will start at 7am and end at 3pm if the Electoral Commission (EC) is successful in carrying through proposals contained in a yet-to-be-laid Constitutional Instrument (C.I).

Currently, voting ends at 5 pm but the Director of Electoral Services for the Electoral Commission, Dr Serebour Quaicoe is convinced the creation of additional polling centres would enable voting to go faster thereby justifying the need to reduce the voting time by two hours.

He explained that if the time is shifted to 3pm, collating and counting of ballot papers can be done during the day.

“One of it [proposals] is for us to close at 3 o’clock because we’ve realise that most of the election by 1pm we are almost done and people do a lot of things under the cover of darkness,” he said in an interview on JoyNews’ PM Express on Monday.

Dr Quaicoe says the proposals among others, also seek to make the Ghana Card the sole means of identification for registration onto the voters register.

He added that the EC remains firm in its stance on the matter.

According to him, a special dispensation for females and disabled candidates is also included in the proposal.

The Electoral Commission also says renunciation of one’s citizenship to another country before filing of nominations is entirely the responsibility of the aspirant.

This, the EC says, is because it is difficult to investigate and verify the dual citizenship holders due to the multiple constituencies across the country and limited time.

“I don’t owe any allegiance should tell you that once you sign you are saying that you don’t have … because you have sworn before a court, it is not just by word of mouth. If the person has a dual citizenship and doesn’t tell you, how would you know?”

According to him, an investigation into such claims can only be possible when there is a tip off. He therefore urged aspirants to respect the system.

  • Ghana will never go back to ‘dumsor’ – Akufo-Addo

Ghana will never go back to ‘dumsor’ – Akufo-Addo

President Akufo-Addo has reassured the nation that Ghana will never experience the return of “Dumsor,” a term used to describe the erratic power supply that plagued the country in previous years.

According to the president, under his government, electricity is no longer a privilege in Ghana like it was before he came to power.

Akufo-Addo, who made these remarks at the commissioning of a 161-kilovolt GRIDCo, Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) Bulk Power Supply Point, could not help but jab his predecessor, John Dramani Mahama, who he accused of being responsible for ‘dumsor’.

“Our daily lives, from simple things such as charging our mobile phones, and keeping our electrical appliances working, to operating our offices and businesses, are run by electric power.

“Electricity is no longer a luxury but rather a necessity in this day and age, and we must commit ourselves to working hard to ensure that we achieve universal coverage in this country in order to spur on rapid rates of economic growth,”

“… I wish to reassure you all that my government will continue to work towards “Keeping the Lights on”, in spite of the global dynamics of energy pricing, because the alternative is not an option. We are not going back to dumsor, we leave that to President Mahama,” he said.

On the 161-kilovolt GRIDCo, ECG Bulk Power Supply Point, which was constructed under the Project for the Reinforcement of Power Supply to Accra Central, Akufo Addo said that it (the supply point) would help ensure the heart of the nation, Accra, keeps beating.

“It is evident that the execution of the Accra Central BSP project is consistent with the country’s power needs and development, with a GDP growth rate of up to fifteen per cent (15%) around the time of project preparation,” he said.

President Akufo-Addo continued, “The project we are commissioning today is a one hundred and sixty-one kilo-Volt Bulk Supply Point, which delivers on the government’s commitment to “Keep the Lights On”. It also guarantees stable, reliable and regular supply of electricity for the busy and bustling Accra Central Business District and surrounding areas.”

About Accra Central Bulk Supply Point:

This Bulk Supply Point is a gas-insulated sub-station, which is GRIDCo’s first sub-station with such technology. This is an innovation in technology applied in areas where spaces are significantly limited, thus large capacity switchgear and transformers, which are compact, can be installed.

The benefits of this Accra Central Bulk Supply Point, amongst many others, are to reduce transmission and distribution losses, ensure high reliability of electricity supply, and ensure a high level of personnel safety.

With the operationalisation of the Accra Central BSP, power voltages have become stable (protecting valuable equipment), power supply reliability has improved, and, with this, efficiency has been restored, reducing system losses as required by the regulator, Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC).

Volta NDC dissolves groups and camps arising from May 13 primaries

The Volta Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has disbanded all groups and camps formed during the party’s May 13 presidential and parliamentary primaries.

According to Mr Mawutor Agbavitor, the elections are over, and the party must march forward in unity towards victory for the NDC in the 2024 general elections.

“We want to prevent the phenomenon of ‘Skirt-and-Blouse’ in the coming elections because what happened was that, all the candidates, during the presidential and parliamentary primaries, went into the elections with a team of party supporters. Now that the elections are over, we need to dissolve or disband all groups or camps for us to move in unity in preventing skirt and blouse in voting. I, therefore, disband or dissolve any such groups or camps in the party in the Volta Region,” Mr. Agbavitor said.

The NDC regional chairman noted that the party had disciplinary measures and would use
them once they detected any of such groups in operation.

“The laid down procedures will be used in dealing with such groups,” he stressed.

The Volta Regional NDC Chairman was speaking at a thanksgiving service organised by the Member of Parliament (MP) for Ho West Constituency Emmanuel Kwasi Bedzrah at Anyirawase, in the Ho West District to thank God for his victory in the May 13 primaries.

Mr Bedzrah also reiterated the call by the Volta Regional Chairman, stressing that the NDC needed peace and unity to win power in the 2024 general elections.

“I am very happy the Chairman has come here today, to disband all groups or camps in my constituency. We have all put up ourselves and sold our messages to the electorates and the delegates. So, we should all come on board for the unity we want to win power,” he said.

The event was attended by some Members of Parliament (MPs), National Executives of the NDC, Regional Executives, Constituency Executives, Chiefs and other party members.

  • Minority deems EC’s refusal to amend proposed C.I as reckless and unfortunate

Minority deems EC’s refusal to amend proposed C.I as reckless and unfortunate

The Electoral Commission‘s insistence on laying the Constitutional Instrument (C.I) without incorporating alternative identity documents, besides the Ghana Card, has raised concerns among lawmakers.

A showdown is expected in Parliament if the EC proceeds to lay its proposed Constitutional Instrument (C. I) without amending it to add other identity documents apart from the Ghana Card as the sole identity document.

Speaking to JoyNews, the Director of Electoral Services of the EC, Dr. Serebour Quaicoe insisted that they will not heed the unanimous decision of Parliament to amend the proposed C.I.

Last week, the Minority Leader Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, told journalists that both NPP and the NDC MPs will come together to kick against the proposed C. I if it is laid without the amendment proposed by Parliament.

Reacting to the recent comment by the EC on the C.I., the Minority Leader noted that “Dr Serebour Quaicoe’s statement is most unfortunate and reckless. It is important to recognise that the Parliament of Ghana is not just a rubber stamp. It is not some dumping ground where you can bring any C.I here and think that they would pass as you wanted.”

According to him, both sides of the House have a dissenting view on the matter hence “he wonders how the EC is going to usurp our legislative authority and have their C.I passed” adding that EC is “just setting a stage for a conflagration which is totally avoidable.”

Although he acknowledged the independence of the EC, Dr Forson insists the EC’s independence does not extend to how Parliament also conducts its business.

“The Electoral Commission is independent, but being independent does not mean you shouldn’t also respect the authority and independence of other arms of government. So what you do in that situation is to avoid a stalemate,” he advised.

The Electoral Commission in September last year, made a move to have the Ghana Card as the sole document for voter registration in the country.

The move agitated the minority group and they subsequently opposed the CI, saying it will disenfranchise voters. But the EC insisted that it will use the Ghana Card for voter registration.

According to the electoral management body, the Ghana Card is the most authentic means of identifying Ghanaians, hence the Commission’s decision to use it in compiling a new database of voters.

Pilot makes ‘miraculous escape’ as plane falls into sea off UK coast

After a small plane crashed into the water off the coast of South Wales, the pilot made a “miraculous” escape.

The red and white jet was captured on camera on Tuesday morning in shallow water between the Seabank Hotel and the lifeboat station in Porthcawl.

People claimed to have seen coastguards escorting the pilot away from the scene.

Witnesses reported hearing the plane’s engine ‘spluttering’ before seeing it crash-land near some rocks.

Onlooker Terry Sinnett, who saw the incident unfold, tweeted: ‘Looks like a small aircraft has come down in Porthcawl.

‘Pilot being attended by public but was walking. Hoping everyone is safe.’

He later added: ‘Seems pilot has had a miraculous escape, thankfully.’

Porthcawl RNLI and Coastguard crews were on the scene quickly, and were joined by members of the police, fire and ambulance services.

In a statement, the RNLI said it received a callout at 9.22am and the pilot was seen by paramedics.

James Brown, 75, saw the plane crash while walking on Lock’s Common, an area of land near the bay.

The retired church minister, said he heard the aircraft’s engine ‘stutter’ before the plane ‘swooped’ into the water.

He told the PA news agency: ‘As I was observing the bay I could hear a fairly low noise of a plane and as I looked to the Swansea direction I saw a light aircraft.

‘It was a bright red colour, very visual, and it passed me right by on the edge of the rocks. Then three or four seconds later I heard the engine begin to splutter and stutter. As I watched it, the engine died completely and then very rapidly it just swooped right down into the water.

‘I couldn’t see the exact moment of the crash, but I walked over and could see it had upended, with the nose in the water and the tail sticking up in the air.’

Mr Brown described the incident as ‘a very near miss’ and said if the pilot had landed on nearby rocks, it ‘would have been a very different outcome’.

Chris Page, RNLI lifeboat press officer at Porthcawl, said: ‘RNLI volunteer crews never quite know what to expect when the call for help comes.

‘We are trained to deal with every eventuality, but were incredibly relieved to arrive on scene to find the pilot was able to be safely recovered.

‘This was a real multi-agency effort between the fire service, the Coastguard and the RNLI.’

Record Labels define artistes’ significance – Papi

Ghanaian singer,Papi has emphasized the vital role of record labels or management in the success of artists, stating that without their support, artistes would be unable to attain their desired heights in their musical careers.

Papi 5Five, who has been in the industry for a long time, and having an understanding of how the absence of a record label or management can have a negative impact on a musician’s career, said that artistes cannot thrive in the music industry without a record label or management.

The singer made this statement in a tweet where he granted an interview on Hitz FM’s DaybreakHitz.

“The artistes are nothing without the management or the record label,” he said.

Papi 5Five also mentioned that there are times some artistes do not give glory to their management or record labels when they succeed in the industry.

He added that such artistes think they were able to achieve such feats on their own, forgetting it was all management work.

“When we get the fame, money, hits and girls, we begin to feel it’s all our doing. It’s all management work”, he stated.

Papi 5five began his music journey as part of the music group, ‘5Five,’ which he formed together with Jeffrey Opoku Agyekum and Juno.

GMSA alleges female nurses in West Gonja Hospital facing restrictions on wearing ‘hijab’

The Ghana Muslim Students’ Association (GMSA), Savannah Region has alleged that female nurses in West Gonja Hospital are being prevented from wearing ‘hijab.

The Association said it is disappointed in the West Gonja Hospital for the illegal prevention of Muslim Nursing students from exercising their citizenry right of Wearing the ‘Hijab’.

The Ghana Muslim Students’ Association (GMSA) in a press release dated 11th June 2023, signed by its Regional Secretariat President, Dr Musah Gbankuluso Adam and copied to Bole-based Nkilgi Fm, condemned in no uncertain terms “the unruly and unprofessional behavior of the Matron of West Gonja hospital-Damongo”, who according to GMSA is spearheading the infringement of the rights of female Muslim nursing students to wear the ‘hijab’.

According to GMSA, female Muslim students were instructed to remove their ‘hijab’ (veils) before entering the hospital wards early this week on the shameless yet erroneous premise that the ‘hijab’ is a catalyst for the spread of infections.

The Muslim Students said the Savannah Regional Secretariat on receipt of this unfortunate development engaged the Matron in an intellectual dialogue in an attempt to resolve the aforementioned matter, and after reaching and agreement to allow the students to put on their “hijab” the said Matron and his compatriots exercised the most unacceptable mischief and betrayal by compelling students to take off their hijab again for the second time.

GMSA said; “we had a second dialogue after we reached a common ground, the Matron again demonstrated gross inconsistency and his overwhelming religious intolerance under the cover of the spread of infections”.

This according to GMSA is happening at a time when the Ministry of Health and the Nurses and Midwifery Council have both directed health facilities authorities never to prevent any female Muslim student or staff from exercising their religious right to wear the hijab.

GMSA therefore, declare its relentlessness to follow up on this matter till the students are allowed to exercise their religious rights as Ghanaians.

The Muslim student added; “We therefore call on the Regional Chief Imam, revered Sheikhs, traditional rulers, law enforcement bodies and all well-meaning opinion leaders to augment in any possible way our efforts to combat this bigotry and fanatic intolerance.

Meanwhile, Nkilgi Fm is struggling to reach out to the St Annes West Gonja Municipal Hospital for their side of the story.

  • Mahama dragged to court over bid to vie for a second presidential term

Mahama dragged to court over bid to vie for a second presidential term

Former President, John Dramani Mahama has been sued by a Ghanaian citizen over his bid to vie for a second presidential term on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

In the suit filed by the Plaintiff; Kenneth Kwabena Agyei Kuranchie, he wants the Supreme Court to disqualify the former president from contesting as a flagbearer of a political party or the presidency in the future.

According to him, the constitution through Article 66 (1) of the 1992 Constitution indicates that a person seeking a second presidential term must be a sitting president and in the case of former President Mahama, he is only seeking to recontest after being out of office for about 8 years.

The victims, including women and children, were returning from an overnight wedding ceremony in the village of Egboti in Niger state, said local resident Usman Ibrahim.

It was not clear if there were any survivors.

Mr Ibrahim said: ‘People in the boat were to take their bikes to their various communities (upon disembarking). The boat was carrying more than 100 people when it sank.’

He said that many drowned because the accident happened at around 3am and not many knew of it until hours later.

Industrial facility gets hit by missile 80 miles from Putin’s $1 billion residence

Following a suspected drone or sabotage attack from Ukraine, a massive explosion has shook a Russian oil refinery.

The factory in the city of Krasnodar was shown to be on fire and emitting thick, foul-smelling black smoke on video footage.

Only 80 miles to the southwest of the facility, on the Black Sea coast, is Vladimir Putin’s infamous £1 billion clifftop home, which features an underground bunker, pole-dancing boudoir, and vineyard.

The major blast comes as Ukraine continues to ramp up its counter-offensive with three villages liberated and one of Putin’s top generals killed in a missile attack this week.

Krasnodar is the capital of the south Russian region of the same name and is linked to the annexed Crimea across the Kerch Strait.

It’s a key link in Putin’s war effort and a hub for supplying occupied Crimea.

More than 130 firefighters were called to the scene of the blaze at Krasnodar Oil Refinery at a diesel processing facility, according to local reports.

The Krasnodar region also suffered a radio hack this week from anti-Putin partisan group Freedom of Russia Legion.

The message threatened to destroy Putin’s ‘war criminals’ in Crimea but would not pose a threat to the civilian population.

Earlier today, at least three people were killed and 25 wounded after a Russian missile strike hit president Volodymyr Zelensky’s hometown of Kryvyi Rih.

Serhiy Lysak, head of the regional administration, said the strike hit a five-storey residential building early on Tuesday and the area was engulfed in fire.

He said in a Telegram post that rescue operations were ongoing.

Images from the scene relayed by Mr Zelensky on his Telegram channel showed firefighters battling the fire as charred and damaged vehicles littered the ground.

He wrote on the app: ‘More terrorist missiles. Russian killers continue their war against residential buildings, ordinary cities and people.’

The aerial assault was the latest barrage of strikes by Russian forces that targeted various parts of Ukraine overnight.

The Kyiv military administration reported that the capital came under fire Tuesday but the incoming missiles were destroyed by air defence.

Despite the chances of a decisive Ukrainian victory increasing since the long-awaited counter-offensive was launched, Putin is reportedly refusing to listen to battlefield reports from his generals.

Ablakwa claims US government has expressed concerns over operations of Ghana’s National Cathedral

Member of Parliament of North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has alleged the Intervene Revenue Service (IRS) of the government of the United States (US) raised concerns about the operation of the National Cathedral of Ghana.

According to him, the tax exemption given to the National Cathedral of Ghana and Bible Museum Foundation, Inc, the subsidiary of the National Cathedral of Ghana in the US, is likely to be cancelled because of the activities of its leaders.

In a series of tweets shared on Tuesday, June 13, 2023, the MP alleged that leaders of the cathedral in the US have been engaging in irregularities which have now been noticed by the US government.

“Nobody knows how much has been raised, the banks being used, signatories to the bank accounts and how the funds raised are disbursed, particularly as the cathedral contractor, RIBADE JV has abandoned site for over a year for lack of payment.

“The US cabal who registered the “National Cathedral of Ghana and Bible Museum Foundation, Inc” without a single clergy representation has never accounted to the Ghanaian people, neither to the Parliament of Ghana.

“As previously demonstrated, they have in an illegal conduct, not filed a Form 990 report with the IRS of the USA since 2021 which has triggered genuine concerns that per US Federal law, their tax-exempt status would be revoked any moment from now,” parts of the tweet read.

The MP said that operations of the cathedral are continuing in the US despite an order for works on it to cease for an independent audit of its accounts.

“Revered clergymen, Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams and Rev. Eastwood Anaba would be really upset to discover that five months after their explosive, no holds barred memo to the Board of Trustees of the “National” Cathedral demanding that ‘ALL CURRENT ACTIVITIES ADVANCING THE CONSTRUCTION OF GHANA’S NATIONAL CATHEDRAL SHALL BE DEFERRED until an independent audit’.

“… the US cabal who operate as law unto themselves have blatantly defied the respected trustees and are still actively receiving cash donations,” it added.

One person killed after tour boat capsizes inside a cave

A tour boat that sank inside a cave in upstate New York has resulted in one death and multiple hospitalisations.

On Monday at 11:25 a.m. in Lockport Cave, a boat capsized, according to authorities.

According to WIVB, the deceased was a 60-year-old male who was not immediately identified by authorities. He may have become trapped beneath the boat and suffered injuries before passing away. The tour boat also carried his wife.

Eleven additional people were taken to hospitals with minor wounds, according to Lockport officials.

About 16 people were rescued by first responders. Some passengers were able to walk out of the water because it was shallow.

There were 28 passengers on board the Lockport Cave & Underground tour boat. All of them were from western New York and part of a Destination Niagara USA tour.

The water temperature was an estimated 60 degrees Fahrenheit due to it being shallower than the frigid surrounding waters.

Rescuers were able to account for every person within about an hour, officials said. No one was wearing a life jacket.

The cause of boat capsizing is under investigation by state agencies as well as the US Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

However, the Lockport Union-Sun Journal reported that it flipped because of a sudden shift in the weight distribution.

Four people with injuries that were not critical were being treated at the Eastern Niagara Health System, according to WKBW. Seven others ere taken to a nearby hospital.

Multiple agencies including the Lockport police and fire departments worked ‘to assist parties that were on a boat that capsized in the Lockport Cave tours,’ stated the Lockport Police Department on Facebook earlier on Monday.

‘Crews are working to assist all parties safely out of the area.’

Streets surrounding the cave, which is about 20 miles east of Niagara Falls, were closed to allow rescue vehicles to enter.

Tours have operated inside the cave system since 1977, according to WIVB. Water in the cave is about 4 to 6 feet deep, the TV station reported in 2021.

The Lockport incident happened two weeks after four people died when a tourist boat capsized on Lake Maggiore in Italy during a storm.

  • Young writer breaks two records before the age of five as he publishes book sequel

Young writer breaks two records before the age of five as he publishes book sequel

Achieving a world record is no small feat, achieving two is impressive, but to do it before the age of five is amazing to say the least.

But that’s exactly what Saeed Rashed AlMheiri (UAE), who you might remember, achieved in March of this year the world record for youngest person to publish a book at the age of 4 years and 218 days, has done.

After 20 days, he managed to write a sequel to that book, earning him the title for youngest person to publish a book series (male) at the age of 4 years and 238 days old.

The book was published in the United Arab Emirates by Rainbow Chimney Educational Aids, a commercial publishing house that focuses on children aged up to 13 years old.

As per the records guidelines, the book must sell at least 1,000 printed copies, which the family managed to do during Abu Dhabi International Book Fair 2023.

His first book, titled The Elephant Saeed and the Bear, talks about an elephant, as Saeed puts it: “The elephant wanted to have a picnic on a mountain. He met a polar bear who instead of eating the elephant chooses to become his friend.”

His second book in the series, My True Friend, talks about the elephant saying farewell to his polar bear friend as he heads back home.

However, the elephant falls in water and calls for help, and the bear comes to the rescue.

The story ends with the elephant thanking his friend, or as Saeed put it: “Thank you for being a true friend”.

Saeed says: “My book teaches children how to be kind.”

Books are Saeed’s best friend, and he is also very fond of numbers and robotics.

He is a very ambitious young man and wants to become a scientist one day.

“When I grow up, I want to be a scientist and a superhero to save the Earth.”

His mother, Mouza AlDarmaki said that the family intends to inspire other children and encourage them to read and write.

“We want kids to believe in themselves, if Saeed can do it, they can too.”

Saeed’s inspiration comes from his sister, AlDhabi AlMheiri, who also published a book series at a young age.

AlDhabi also holds a Guinness World Records title for the youngest person to publish a bilingual book series (female) at the age of 8 years and 239 days old.

She published her book titled I Had An Idea And Here Was The Beginning in both English and Arabic.

“I want to tell children that they can be whatever they want to be if they try hard and read what they like in order to develop their minds.” – AlDhabi

We can’t wait to see what the future holds for these incredible young stars!

Hilda Bassey, named the new holder of world record for the longest cooking marathon

The Guinness World Record (GWR) committee said Tuesday that Nigerian chef Hilda Effiong Bassey, also known as Hilda Baci on social media, has been officially recognised as the new record holder for the longest cooking marathon.

Nearly a month after the GWR had looked through the four-day cookathon’s video, the record had been established.

An adjudicator who only went by the name Mark made the announcement in a video uploaded on the official Twitter account of the Guiness World Records on Tuesday. “I can now announce that with a time of 93 hours and 11 minutes, Hilda Baci is the new holder for the Guiness world Records title of the longest cooking marathon,” he said.

The 26-year-old cooked in a makeshift kitchen for four days, starting on Thursday, May 11, and finishing on Monday, May 15, producing almost 100 pots of food, GWR said on its website.

“When I found out, I cried, prayed and screamed,” Bassey told CNN after learning of her record-breaking feat.

“Then I called my mum and we cried some more. I am so happy. Everything and all the hard work was worth it. I said I wanted to be a record holder and now I am. This is for all my team members and for all the hard work,” Bassey added.

Although Bassey cooked for 100 hours, she was penalized for an error in her scheduled rest breaks, according to the world record committee.

“There was a miscalculation when it came to Hilda’s rest breaks, meaning we are unable to award the 100 hours claimed,” the adjudicator said.

The longest cookathon title was previously held by Indian chef Lata Tondon, who cooked for 87 hours and 45 minutes in 2019.

Basey’s record attempt made her star and was so popular that it crashed the GWR site for two days, “due to the immense volume of traffic we received from her legion of loyal fans,” the organization said.

“I also want to thank Nigerians. They are so awesome. The support was so great. We really did something amazing,” Bassey said.

Lady who took an abortion medication sentenced to 28 months

The PA Media news agency reported that a British lady who used drugs to induce an abortion after the United Kingdom’s legal limit has been given a 28-month prison sentence.

The mother-of-three, 44, received the sentence on Monday from a judge at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court in central England in a case that prompted calls for a review of the nation’s reproductive justice rules. She was condemned in accordance with the 1861-old Offences Against Persons Act.

She had entered a guilty plea to distributing medicines or using tools to get an abortion. In this nation, life in jail is the harshest punishment possible.

The woman will serve 14 months in custody and the remainder on license after her release. She was first charged with child destruction and pleaded not guilty.

She had searched a number of abortion-related items online in the months between February and May 2020, after she became pregnant in 2019, the prosecution said.

She had a conversation with a nurse at the British Pregnancy Advisory Service (BPAS), an abortion care facility, on May 6, 2020, PA Media reported. BPAS mailed her abortion-inducing medication after concluding she was about seven weeks pregnant, based on her answers.

Five days later, after the woman ingested the drugs, an emergency call was made saying she was in labor. Her child was born during the phone call, and was later pronounced dead at hospital following resuscitation attempts by paramedics.

The woman was between 32 and 34 weeks pregnant at the time, a post-mortem examination revealed. The baby’s cause of death was documented as still birth and maternal use of abortion drugs, according to PA Media.

Abortion laws in the UK stipulate that a person may be able to have a medical abortion at home if they are less than 10 weeks pregnant, according to the National Health Service.

The lady had not visited a doctor about her pregnancy because she was “embarrassed” and had no knowledge of how far along she was, the court was told.

The prosecuting barrister, Robert Price, said the woman “lied to BPAS about how pregnant she was so they sent the tablets to her,” according to PA Media.

Justice Pepperall declared the case was “tragic,” adding he might have contemplated suspending the jail sentence if the woman pleaded guilty earlier.

The case triggered calls for an urgent reform of abortion laws in the UK.

“We must ensure the law protects women, like the woman who faces sentencing today, from prosecution. We call on the governemnt [sic] to reform our outdated #abortion laws now & safeguard our constitutional right to abortion,” the Fawcett Society, a UK-based gender equality and women’s rights charity, tweeted.

Commenting on the case, BPAS tweeted: “No woman can ever go through this again. We need abortion law reform in Great Britain NOW.”

When asked if British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is certain that criminalizing abortion in some situations is the correct approach, his spokesperson told reporters: “Our laws as they stand balance a woman’s right to access safe and legal abortions with the rights of an unborn child, I’m not aware of any plans to address that approach.”

  • World’s saltiest, coldest oceans warming up and getting smaller – Report

World’s saltiest, coldest oceans warming up and getting smaller – Report

A paper claims that deep ocean water in the Antarctic is warming and contracting, which might have significant effects on climate change and deep ocean ecosystems.

The world’s coldest, saltiest water is referred to as “Antarctic bottom water.” By absorbing excess heat and carbon pollution from humans, these waters are essential to the ocean’s ability to act as a barrier against climate change. They also move nutrients around the ocean.

However, the Weddell Sea along Antarctica’s northern coast is experiencing a loss in this crucial water mass as a result of long-term shifts in winds and sea ice, according to a report released on Monday by the British Antarctic Survey.

Scientists used decades of data taken by ships as well as from satellites to assess the volume, temperature and saltiness of this slice of deep Antarctic Ocean.

“Some of these sections were first visited as far back as 1989, making them some of the most comprehensively sampled regions in the Weddell Sea,” Povl Abrahamsen, a physical oceanographer at BAS and co-author, said in a statement.

They found that the volume of the cold bottom waters has shrunk by more than 20% over the past three decades. They also found that ocean waters deeper than 2,000 meters (6,600 feet) have warmed four times faster than the rest of the global ocean.

“We used to think that changes in the deep ocean could only occur over centuries. But these key observations from the Weddell Sea show that changes in the dark abyss can take place over just a few decades,” Alessandro Silvano from the University of Southampton in the UK, a co-author of the study, said in a statement.

The reason these deep waters are shrinking is down to changes in sea ice formation caused by weakening winds, the study found. Stronger winds tend to push ice away from the ice shelf, which leaves areas of water open for more ice to form. Weaker winds have meant these gaps are smaller, slowing sea ice creation, according to the study.

New sea ice is vital to create the Weddell Sea’s very cold, salty water. As the water freezes, it pushes out salt and as salty water is denser, it sinks to the bottom of the ocean.

The changes in these deep waters can have far-reaching consequences. They are a vital part of global ocean circulation, transporting human-caused carbon pollution into the deep ocean where it remains for centuries, said Silvano. If this deep circulation weakens, “less carbon can be absorbed by the deep ocean, limiting the ability of the ocean to mitigate global warming,” Silvano told CNN.

Oceans have absorbed more than 90% of the world’s excess heat since the 1970s and absorb almost a third of human-produced carbon pollution.

This cold, dense water also has a vital role in supplying oxygen to deep ocean waters. How and whether deep ecosystems could adapt to less oxygen “is unclear,” added Silvano.

Holly Ayres, a researcher at the department of meteorology at Reading University in the UK who was not involved in the study, said the BAS research is a step forward in our knowledge about deep ocean water in the Antarctic.

“To have combined decades of ship-based observations and satellite data is a big leap in our understanding of the formation process, and may be helpful in our understanding of how Antarctic bottom water will form in the future,” Ayres told CNN.

While the changes the study identified are the result of natural climate variability, climate change is also having an impact on Antarctica’s deep waters.

In a March study, scientists found that melting ice is diluting the saltiness of the ocean and slowing down the the circulation of deep ocean water in the Antarctic. Failure to limit planet-heating pollution could lead to the collapse of the circulation of deep ocean water, with potentially devastating consequences for the climate and marine life, the report found.

BAS new study is “an early warning” Shenjie Zhou, an oceanographer at BAS and lead author of the study, told CNN. “The ongoing changes in the deep water layer in the Antarctic are already happening and it’s not heading in the direction that we want.”

Children among 46 dead in DRC relocation camp

As reported by a network of observers located in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), at least 46 people—including 23 children—were killed and six others were injured at a displacement camp.

Following a Monday attack by the militia group “Codeco,” the incident, according to the Kivu Security Tracker, took place in the Djugu area.

Following an incursion by #CODECO, “at least 46 civilians were killed and six wounded on Monday, June 12 at the #Lala displaced persons camp (Djugu territory, #Ituri),” Kivu Security said on Twitter.

Kivu Security added that the attack was the deadliest experienced in the area in more than a year. The massacre may have been a reprisal for acts of violence by other armed milita groups, they said.

In a statement on Monday, the UN peacekeeping mission ‘Monusco’ said that they condemn in the “strongest” terms the “despicable attack” that took place in the displacement camp.

“MONUSCO has reinforced its security presence in the area, in liaison with the provincial authorities,” a statement by MONUSCO chief said.

“The Mission will spare no effort to put an end to these attacks and to fight against impunity, in accordance with its mandate.”

The statement added that MONUSCO extends its condolences to the families of the victims and “wishes a speedy recovery” to the injured.

MONUSCO urged the Congolese authorities to expedite an investigation and bring perpetrators to justice.

The DRC continues to grapple with waves of violence that have persisted in its North Kivu province, despite efforts by its armed forces and international peacekeepers to contain it.

The Congolese government also condemned the attack while assuring that its armed forces “remain committed to restoring security in Ituri.”

Activist group LUCHA says the government hasn’t done enough in protecting vulnerable communities from attacks.

In January, at least 12 worshipers were killed and around 50 injured at a church service when a bomb was detonated by the ADF militia group in Kasindi, North Kivu.

  • Russian reports acknowledge Ukrainian forces are advancing in fierce combat

Russian reports acknowledge Ukrainian forces are advancing in fierce combat

Russian and Ukrainian forces are reporting intense fighting along the border of Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk and southern Zaporizhzhia regions as Kyiv’s military attempts to break through the front lines and recapture territory in an ongoing counteroffensive.

The new reports came as Russian missiles attacked the central Ukrainian city of Kryvyi Rih early Tuesday, killing at least 10 people and injuring 28, according to Oleksandr Vilkul, head of the Kryvyi Rih city military administration.

Air defenses shot down three cruise missiles over the city but there were also “incomings” that hit civilian infrastructure, authorities said, adding that a five-story apartment building was on fire.

Rescue workers are still trying to reach one person trapped under the rubble of a residential building hit by a missile, according to city officials. A day of mourning has been declared for the victims on Wednesday.

The latest battle reports came from Moscow-backed officials and military bloggers who detailed clashes south of the town of Velyka Novosilka along both sides of the Mokri Yaly River, where Ukrainian forces have made gains in recent days.

Ukraine on Saturday seized several small villages along the river, according to geolocated video. And on Sunday, Ukraine’s deputy defense minister Hanna Maliar said Kyiv’s advances in the area amount to between 5 and 10 kilometers (3 to 6 miles).

Late Monday, a senior Russia-appointed official, Vladimir Rogov, spoke of heavy fighting in an area known as the Vremivka Ridge, claiming that higher ground remained under Russian control.

Rogov, a member of the Russian-installed Zaporizhzhia administration, said on Telegram that Russian attack helicopters were in action, and that in the vicinity of the village of Urozhaine, “reciprocal shelling and heavy fighting of ultra-high intensity continues.”

Rogov conceded that Ukrainian forces were “holding their positions on the northern and eastern outskirts of the village.”

Russian forces are trying to repel Ukraine’s breakthrough with counterattacks, according to the unofficial Russian Telegram channel, Operatsiya Z.

The channel said Monday that Ukrainian forces were trying to take higher ground to “create conditions for advancing,” and assessed that their aim was to advance toward the Russian-occupied hub of Staromlynivka.

Elsewhere Oleksandr Syrskyi, commander of Ukrainian Land Forces, said Tuesday that Ukrainian troops have continued “the defense operation in the Bakhmut direction.”

“Our soldiers are advancing, the enemy is losing ground on the flanks,” Syrskyi said.

Ukrainian officials also claim advances towards the direction of the port city of Berdiansk over the past day.

“The area taken under control amounted to three square kilometers,” spokesman for the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Andriy Kovalov, said Tuesday.

In the Donetsk village of Makarivka, Ukrainian forces had “already been driven out by the quick and effective counterattack of the 127th Division,” said Rogov, the Moscow-backed official. CNN cannot independently verify battlefield reports and other accounts paint a gloomier picture for Russian forces around Makarivka.

Ukrainian deputy defense minister Maliar said Monday that Makarivka was one of seven villages recaptured by Ukrainian forces in the past week.

Russian military bloggers have also been reporting intense combat in the area, with one Telegram channel called “Our Donetsk” saying the Ukrainians “managed to deepen and advance through the wooded areas, threatening with further advance to encircle” nearby Russian units.

There is no way to verify these unofficial reports, but they are consistent with a pattern in the fighting that has evolved in the last week.

“Our Donetsk” acknowledged that Russian troops had been forced to abandon Neskuchne – just south of Velyka Novosilka – for a second time, “retreating to positions where they would not be encircled.”

It said the Ukrainians were “accumulating forces” in the area, and heavy fighting continued.

Meanwhile, one of the most prominent Russian bloggers, Voenkor Kotenok, said late Monday that a senior Russian officer was killed as troops of Russia’s Fifth Army were forced to leave Makarivka.

Voenkor, who has 423,000 subscribers, said in a Telegram post that “as a result of an enemy missile attack, the Chief of Staff of the 35th Combined Arms Army, Major General Sergei Goryachev, was killed.”

There is no independent verification of the death of Goryachev, a highly experienced commander, and no word from the Russian Defense Ministry.

Voenkor said that “according to representatives of the command of the United Group of Forces (S), the army has lost today one of the brightest and most effective military leaders.”

Another well-known Russian military blogger, WarGonzo, acknowledged Monday that earlier “victorious statements” about the situation in Makarivka were “premature.”

“The settlement is still a place of fierce fighting…The enemy is bringing in infantry in small groups, using light equipment, which makes it difficult to defeat them quickly,” the blogger said on Telegram.

“Despite expectations, we have failed to retake the village by the end of the day. We hope there will be success in this regard tomorrow.”

By contrast, Russian military bloggers are claiming that Ukrainian efforts to advance south of Orikhiv, in another part of the southern front, have been resisted, with several saying the Ukrainians had lost a significant number of demining tanks in an area known to have been heavily fortified by the Russians with minefields and tank traps.

Geolocated video appears to show Ukrainian armor losses in this area.

In his nightly address Monday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the fighting in the Donetsk-Zaporizhzhia border region is tough but Ukrainian forces are recapturing territory.

“The battles are fierce, but we are moving forward, and this is very important. The enemy’s losses are exactly what we need,” Zelensky said.

“Although the weather is unfavorable these days – the rains make our task more difficult – the strength of our warriors still yields results.”

Zelensky also said “the most important and hottest” operational areas are in the Tavria and the Khortytsia directions.

The commander of the Ukrainian Ground Forces and the general of the Tavria operational-strategic group reported “on the success we have achieved, on the front areas where we need to reinforce and on the actions we can take to break more Russian positions,” Zelensky said.

Zelensky’s chief diplomatic adviser Igor Zhovkva told CNN Monday that the “ultimate goal of the counteroffensive campaign is to win back all the territories, including Crimea.”

Zhovkva would not give details on the counteroffensive actions underway.

He also sought to tamp down any expectations that the campaign would achieve rapid results, saying it could take many months for Ukraine to achieve its aims.

CNN’s Olga Voitovych, Sharon Braithwaite and Andrew Carey contributed reporting.

  • Ghanaian Medical students in Ukraine ‘cry’ for help over possible expulsion

Ghanaian Medical students in Ukraine ‘cry’ for help over possible expulsion

Some Ghanaian medical students training abroad have a desperate concern about their futures as there has been an unusual delay in the release of their scholarship monies from the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat.

For a number of these students, several notices from their schools of studies have been given them, and soon, they could be withdrawn from their studies, and eventually from the school.

Speaking in an interview, one of the desperate students, Seth Ofori Nyanzu, a final year student of Donetsk National Medical University in Ukraine, pleaded with the secretariat to help him graduate.

He fears if the secretariat does not intervene soon, his six to seven years in medical school would have all gone to waste and that would mean that his life would become a mess.

Explaining the genesis of all these issues, Seth said that all seemed to be going well until the Russia-Ukraine War started in 2021.

“I’m a final year student in Ukraine and I happen to be a beneficiary of the Scholarship Secretariat in the year 2019/2020 when I was in my third year. At that time, I had already been put on expulsion list, and due to the fact that I did not pay my tuition fee, the school at that time – Donetsk National Medical University, had put me on expulsion list.

“During that period, the Scholarship Secretariat had engaged us and had promised that they were going to offer some scholarships to needy students. Fortunately, I was connected and I got that opportunity to benefit from the secretariat. That year, though the money came very late – that was when we entered 2020, but we were paid in full for the 2019/2020, so I didn’t have any issues,” he said.

He added that, “The one for the 2020/2021 academic year also came but during that time, we didn’t receive the money until we got to the end of the academic year in 2021. They told us they were going to give us the stipend and the book allowances so we waited until that academic year was over and we entered into 2021/2022 academic year. That was in my 5th year.

“We waited the whole of 2022 but the money didn’t come until we entered into 2022 and they promised they were going to pay. By then, we had had a series of meetings with the secretariat, with our coordinator, even with the scholarship administrator himself. There was even a time he was travelling and at the airport, he promised us that they were going to pay and that already, the money had been sent to the Ghana embassy in Berne and that they were going to pay us within that week that he was speaking with us. That was in January, and unfortunately in February, the war came,” he explained.

The final year medical student further stated that although the war brought a lot of people back to Ghana, he and a number of very needy students could not afford such a move.

He explained that such a move would have meant that they would have to backtrack another two years just so they can continue their education in Ukraine.

Besides, he added, he and others like him were already in their final years and the conditions presented by the Ukrainian authorities would not have helped them.

“So, when the war came, there were issues with people moving from places to another, and about two weeks after the war, all lectures resumed normally in Ukraine but online, and for them, they were expecting us to pay our fees because they were offering us lectures. We communicated this to the Scholarship Secretariat, but through it all, after the several, countless meetings with promises after another, then there was an issue of they did not know whether to pay us or not, and that they did not know if we were attending the lectures and the fact that some had returned home and so there was no need for them to pay us.

“They then requested for evidence from us to show that we were still in school and we gave all the necessary documents and evidences, to the extent that we gave them the expulsion lists from the schools. In fact, we tried every other means but the secretariat, led by Hon Kingsley and Hon Joseph Djaba, who’s responsible for the Schengen countries and that of Ukraine, and they added another coordinator, Mr. Richard Gyamfi, several emails have been sent.”

He said while some of his colleagues have received approval for payment, those without political links have been left hanging.

“Sometimes, they have even told us not to text them again and that we should talk to the secretariat. Even those responsible to us are not ready to answer question, they are not willing to talk to us. Unfortunately for us, we only heard that some people among us have been given approval for payment, but for some of us without any strong political links, or someone to make a good case for us, we are left hanging.

“For me, for instance, I am a final year student and I’m just about to write my final exams and graduate, but because I’ve not paid my fees, my school wants to expel me to prevent me from writing my final exams, and for that matter, I may have to repeat one more year. For some of us, we couldn’t come back to Ghana to finish our studies because we only had one more year to complete, and the conditions for people to come to Ghana was that they were not going to admit anybody beyond third year or fourth year,” he added.

Seth Nyanzu is hopeful that the Scholarship Secretariat would urgently come to their aid and help them complete this long journey of training to be doctors.

He also expressed great worry because he said that there have been instances where they have been warned against speaking with the media, but he said this is the only way he can get the attention of the right authorities in redressing his issue.

“So, we are pleading through your medium, please the Scholarship Secretariat should pay, at least, some of us that we are depending on this for our survival. The money that is needed if our fees so that we can just graduate in peace because I can’t spend six, seven years in school and because of a year or two – and for two years now, the Scholarship Secretariat has not paid us students from Ukraine anything… and to some extent, we are even being threatened that we shouldn’t go to the media, but yet nothing has been done,” he explained.

School activities in Ketu South come to a halt as residents struggle with impact of tidal waves

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for the Ketu South constituency in the Volta Region, Maxwell Lugudor, says the Assembly is working with traditional authorities to provide temporary accommodation for persons affected by the recent floods in the area.

The flooding, which resulted from three weeks of continuous downpour, has caused destruction to several homes and cut off several parts of the community from social amenities.

Schools have subsequently been closed to ensure the safety of students.

Speaking to Citi News, the MCE said affected residents have been encouraged to seek refuge with relatives while temporary accommodations are being worked on.

“What is happening is very unexpected and we didn’t prepare any place for the students to stay. I have spoken to some of the chiefs in the area to find places for them to stay, and in the meantime, we are advising those who have relatives nearby to stay with them while we work on something as soon as possible.”

The regional director for the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Ivy Amewuga, also said her outfit will soon provide necessary relief items to the victims.

“We are going to send some reports to the headquarters operations team even before we get to Ho from here, and I have already informed the headquarters of what is happening. So definitely they are also on standby, and so some relief items will be made available to those who need them.”

Local Government Minister assesses progress of ongoing desilting works on Accra’s local drains

The Minister for Local Government, Decentralisation and Rural Development (MLDGRD), Mr Dan Botwe, has paid a working visit to the beneficiary Metropolitan and Municipal Assemblies (MMAs) of the Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development (GARID) Project to assess the progress of the ongoing desilting works on local drains in the Assemblies.

During the tour, Mr Botwe reiterated the importance of maintaining and improving drainage infrastructure to ensure the safety and well-being of the residents within the Municipalities, noting that “Regular maintenance of drains are of utmost importance to mitigate the risks of flooding and safeguard our communities. The grant provided by the GARID Project has been instrumental in supporting the Metropolitan Assemblies’ efforts to carry out these essential works. I am pleased with the progress made so far and commend the dedication of the Assemblies in executing this crucial task”.

The GARID Project Coordinator, Dr Kwadwo Ohene Sarfoh, expressed satisfaction about how the MMAs are applying the grant to improve flood resilience of the city.

He said, ” The desilting and dredging of secondary and tertiary drains in beneficiary communities enables the achievement of quick-wins in our quest to enhance the resilience of the city. By improving the drainage system, we are reducing the vulnerability of our communities to flooding and building a more resilient city. This will go a long way to help achieve the Project goal.”

The Grant Scheme is part of the interventions being implemented by the Project to help improve the operations and maintenance of priority secondary and tertiary drains in communities along the Odaw River channel.

Part of the previous grant disbursed to the MMAs have been used for the preparation of Operations and Maintenance plans, development of comprehensive drainage network digital maps and asset registers, procurement of equipment such as hand-held GPS devices, Schmidt hammers, and laptop computers.

The Metropolitan and Municipal Chief Executives expressed their gratitude for the support received from the GARID Project. The Dean of the Greater Accra Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives, Mr. George Cyril Bray, said, “The grant from the GARID Project is an important contribution to our ongoing actions to mitigate floods in the respective jurisdictions where the project activities are being undertaken. This initiative is essential to maintain the functionality of our drainage systems and mitigate the risks posed by flooding. We appreciate the partnership with the GARID Project and remain committed to further enhancing the resilience of Accra.”

Ahead of the tour, the Minister had elicited from the participating MMDAs and the LUSPA office, the flood hotspots in need of such mitigation measures. During the inspection tour, the Honourable Local Government Minister, along with the GARID Project Coordinator and the Metropolitan Chief Executives, visited some of these flood hotspots to verify the extent to which the desilting and dredging was resolving the challenges. The Minister interacted with the workers on the ground, commending them for their diligent efforts in executing the project.

At the end of the tour, Mr. Dan Botwe reassured the public of the government’s commitment to addressing flooding challenges in Accra. “We have so far disbursed over One Million, Three Hundred Thousand Dollars (1,300,000.00) to the seventeen (17) GARID Project beneficiary MMAs to use to improve the operation and maintenance of secondary and tertiary drains in the Odaw River catchment. This excludes the other important interventions by the other Ministries involved in the GARID project, the Ministry of Works and Housing addressing the main Odaw channel as well as the principal Nima and Kaneshie tributaries. The Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources also supported these same MMDAs with solid waste collection equipment, and has been facilitating regular clean-up exercises in the communities, particularly those along the Odaw River channel. We will continue to support the MMDAs every year to ensure that incidence and impacts of flooding are reduced to the barest minimum in localities of the city where the Odaw River traverses,” The Minister indicated.

The GARID Project aims at improving drainage, solid waste management, and provision of infrastructure in priority flood-prone informal settlements within the Odaw River basin. The Project is being implemented by the Ministry of Works and Housing, Ministry of Local Government, Decentralisation and Rural Development, and Ministry Sanitation and Water Resources.

National Cathedral speaks on why it barely responds to Ablakwa’s ‘lies’

The Director of the National Cathedral, Dr Paul Opoku Mensah, has taken a swipe at the Member of Parliament (MP) for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, over allegations of corruption he has made on the cathedral project.

According to him, all the allegations the legislator has made on the cathedral project are lies which should be disregarded.

Speaking in an interview on UTV, on Friday, June 9, 2023, Dr Opoku Mensah added that members of the Board of Trustees of the National Cathedral are mute on the allegations being made by Ablakwa because they can’t go on social media to debate lies.

“None of what Okudzeto Ablakwa is saying is true. We don’t respond to his claims because we are doing the work of God and we can’t follow him to social media (to debate).

“We have all the records of the monies used and they were sent to parliament. This is it, we are not telling lies,” he said in the Twi dialect.

He added that all the support the cathedral project has received from the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo government was approved by the Parliament of Ghana.

Ablakwa, in his latest exposé on the National Cathedral, alleged that the architect for the National Cathedral of Ghana, Sir David Adjaye, was paid an additional $6 million just for amending the original design of the cathedral to include a restaurant.

In a series of tweets shared on Tuesday, June 6, 2023, the MP slammed the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo government for its continued failure to prioritise the needs of the country given the current economic hardships.

Ablakwa could not believe that the government which says it has no money to pay school feeding caters, can afford to pay for works on the cathedral.

The MP shared a supposed document from the Ministry of Finance showing the said payment.

“Please refer to your letter No. SCR/DE3/296/02 dated 27th April 2021 requesting the release of US$5.817.769.65 (Five Million, Eight Hundred and Seventeen Thousand, Seven Hundred and Sixty- Nine US Dollars, Sixty-Five Cents) to pay consultancy fees in respect of the Variation Orders for the inclusion of 300+ Seater Restaurant and Expansion of the Bible Museum on the National Cathedral Project.

“We wish to suggest that due to budgetary constraints, the request in respect of the Variation Orders be charged to your funding source while Government take steps to provide additional funding for the project in the course of the year,” parts of the document read.

How poverty forced a brilliant SHS graduate into galamsey

Koomson Stephen, a brilliant student who achieved outstanding results in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) in 2021, has found himself involved in illegal mining, known as ‘galamsey’, as a means to overcome financial difficulties.

Koomson, a former student of Mpohor Senior High School, attained an impressive academic record with 5As and 3Bs across various subjects.

Unfortunately, due to financial constraints, the brilliant student has been unable to pursue higher education since 2021, Instead, he has resorted to engaging in galamsey and other menial jobs in order to support himself and provide assistance to his younger siblings.

A tweet shared by popular entertainment blogger Ameyaw Debrah displayed Koomson diligently working with a shovel in a galamsey pit.

Ameyaw Debrah’s post shed light on Koomson’s situation, bringing attention to the plight of the ambitious student. The tweet mentioned that Koomson who had five (5As) in his WASSCE including Mathematics, Integrated Science, Religious and Moral Education, Government, and Geography is actively seeking scholarship opportunities and any possible means to return to school.

“Koomson Stephen is a graduate of Mpohor SHS in the western region with 5As and 3Bs in his WASSCE in 2021. Due to financial constraints and other circumstances beyond him, the needy but brilliant student has abandoned education since 2021 and joined in “Galamsey” artisanal mining and other menial jobs to survive and also support other junior siblings,” part of his post read.

Akufo-Addo did not rebuke Henry Quartey at Green Ghana Event – GARCC Clarifies

The Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council (GARCC) has dismissed reports suggesting that President Nana Akufo-Addo scolded Henry Quartey, the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Friday, June 9 ‘Green Ghana’ event in Accra.

There have been various interpretations of a viral video that emerged from the event, which appeared to show the President expressing disapproval of an incident at the event to Mr Quartey when the National Anthem was played.

President Akufo-Addo was the Special Guest of Honour at the event, which marked the 2023 national tree planting exercise, at the University of Ghana campus.

In a statement signed and issued by the Acting Chief Director of GARCC, Mrs Jemima Lomotey the Council explained that the President had directed the Regional Minister to take prompt action regarding some invited guests who chose to remain seated and disregard the National Anthem that was played before the start of the programme.

“The President and all others had been up on their feet in patriotic reverence to the National Anthem. Acting on the President’s directive, the Regional Minister promptly approached the individuals concerned and gave them the necessary information and guidance.

“It is important to emphasise that the Regional Minister sat alongside H.E. the President throughout the entire event, exemplifying their harmonious collaboration,” it said.

The Council said it felt compelled to clarify issues following what it described as unfortunate interpretations of the video.

“We, therefore, urge the public and all well-meaning persons to disregard the contemptuous spin to the video, which appears crafted to create unwarranted public disaffection,” it said.

Meanwhile, in a related development, Nii Torgbor Obodai Ampaw, the Chief of Mempeasem in Accra, who also graced the event, has apologised to the nation for not standing up to observe the National Anthem at the event.

In a statement, the Chief explained that he was not feeling well on the day, hence his inability to be on his feet when the national anthem was played.

I have no plans to feature secular artistes – Joe Mettle

There has been widespread inquiry regarding the relatively limited extent of collaboration observed within the Ghanaian music industry between Gospel musicians and those involved in other genres, particularly those engaged in secular music.

This development has generated a heated argument among many for almost three decades since the Hiplife in particular came into existence.

Some Gospel musicians have already taken the step of featuring those secular musicians in their songs and vice-versa.

But award-winning Gospel musician, Joe Mettle, thinks otherwise.

According to him, although there are calls by people for him to feature a secular artiste, he has no intention of doing that anytime soon.

When asked on Kumasi-based Luv FM if he has any intention to feature a circular artiest, Joe Mettel quickly responded, “I don’t have plans like, at all”.

Food suppliers to protest at Buffer Stock today over unpaid arrears

Members of the National Food Suppliers Association are expected to picket at the premises of the National Food Buffer Stock Company on Tuesday, June 13.

The Association says the picketing is due to the government’s failure to settle the over 2 year’s arrears owed its members.

The group had issued a 14-day ultimatum to the National Food Buffer Stock Company demanding payment of their arrears or face a series of picketing.

A spokesperson for the National Food Suppliers Association, Kwaku Amedume told Citi News that members of the group will not be moved any longer by empty promises by the government.

“It is not going to be only Tuesday, we are going to be there for the rest of the week till our monies are paid. Government owes us a little less than GHC 200 million. None has been paid as we speak and because of that, we are not working through the Buffer Stock any more.

We are working through the Commodity Exchange and so Buffer Stock no longer handles supply contact any more but our arrears of 2021/2022 is what we are demanding.”

  • Ghana’s local currency ratings upgraded from Ca to Caa3

Ghana’s local currency ratings upgraded from Ca to Caa3

Moody’s Investors Service has upgraded Ghana’s long-term issuer rating from Ca to Caa3, signifying an improvement in the country’s creditworthiness. Additionally, the rating agency has also assessed Ghana’s outlook as stable, indicating a positive assessment of the country’s economic prospects and financial stability.

Moody’s has also raised the rating of the local currency senior unsecured MTN programme from (P)Ca to (P)Caa3.

This upgrade is due to the completion of the government’s primary local currency debt restructuring, which has reduced future losses on local currency debt.

According to Moody’s, the Caa3 rating still reflects the existing risk of potential default, which remains a tangible concern until Ghana settles its non-restructured local currency debt and restructures its foreign currency debt.

The stable outlook suggests a healthy balance of downside and upside risks. On the one hand, prolonged negotiations over the restructuring of the government’s foreign currency debt, as well as increasing restrictions on access to local currency funding, pose downside risks that could result in a larger loss than indicated by the Caa3 rating in another local currency debt restructuring.

It said there is the possibility of a relatively smooth foreign currency debt restructuring process, coupled with Ghana’s fiscal and external adjustment supported by the official sector, including the IMF. These factors contribute to a balanced outlook.

  • BET Awards nomination: Why Black Sherif wasn’t nominated – Camidoh’s Manager

BET Awards nomination: Why Black Sherif wasn’t nominated – Camidoh’s Manager

Since the 2023 BET Awards nomination was announced, a multitude of individuals have been pondering and expressing curiosity as to the reasons behind the exclusion of Black Sherif from the prestigious event, particularly in relation to the “Best New International Act” category.

Black Sherif has been tipped to earn a nomination at this year’s BET awards due to his massive achievements during the year under review.

However, Camidoh, an artiste who equally rose to the standard has been nominated.

The Sugarcane crooner was the only Ghanaian nominated for the Best International Act category and many wondered why Black Sherif wasn’t a part of it.

Touching on the development, Camidoh’s manager, George Britton, in an interview with Cape CoastFM said, “Of course, Black Sherif won the Artiste of the Year at the 2023 VGMA and usually if you win such an award then you get the BET Awards nomination.

“But for sometime now, it doesn’t happen like it used to be some years ago so things have changed a bit in that regard,” he added in an interview MyNewsGh.com sighted.

“They now look at what you are also doing in their space, I mean internationally what is your song doing. So that’s some of the things they consider and that’s how come they considered Camidoh for nomination instead of Black Sherif,” he justified on the show.

“They realized sugarcane was huge in Europe, Asia, and everywhere they go so that’s the reason why we got recognized by such a prestigious organization”.
