As a child, I wished my mum was dead — Actress Chacha Eke

Nollywood actress Charity Eke, famously known as Cha Cha Eke, has openly shared how as a child she disliked her mother, so much she wished her dead.

Chacha disclosed this in a post on her Instagram page on Wednesday.

The actress alleged to having nightmares and hallucinations which made her begin to dislike and develop a deep hatred for her mum.

She said, ”This is a video of me and my biological Mom.

“I loved her intensely when I was younger. She was, and still is my best friend. However, as I got older, I began to dislike and develop a deep hatred for her. I had nightmares and hallucinations that supported my euphoria.

“Sadly, many men of God told me after several manic episodes that she was after my life. And so I went about wishing her death and spewing despicable things about her.

“Looking back now at my mental health challenges and journey, it’s laughable to know that those dysfunctional thought patterns and beliefs of mine were a disorder; a chemical reaction in the brain waves that switches your ‘most favourite’ to ‘your least favourite’.

“Dear reader, many people have been emotionally torn apart from their loved ones due to underlying mental conditions. They’d come up with all sorts of negative stories to back up their disillusioned claims. Thankfully, there are pills for those weird inexplicable feelings. Did you know?

“Today is my mother’s birthday and I’m grateful to have realised it was all a sickness in my head while she’s still alive. I love you deeply Mommy. You’re a blessed Woman. 9 Grandchildren and still counting😍”

“I would love to marry again whether it’s my ex-husband or a new amazing man that God sent, I would want to have a family. Yes, I would love to go back to him [my ex-husband] or if God says, this is the man you are going to marry. I just want peace of mind and happiness. As I get older, I just want someone that I can build with and I can have peace of mind with. Peace of mind is more valuable than money.”

Ghanaian musician, Wutah Kobby, has expressed his perspective on the ongoing controversies surrounding the wearing of dreadlocks by Senior High School students.

Following the recent incident where a student was initially denied admission to Achimota Senior High School due to his dreadlocks but later joined the school’s National Science and Math Quiz (NSMQ) team, Wutah Kobby has expressed his opinion on the matter.

In a report by yfmghana.com, the singer shared his perspective, emphasizing that individuals should be judged based on their actions rather than their appearance.

He believes that this incident should serve as a wake-up call for other schools with strict and inflexible rules to reconsider their stance.

Wutah Kobby also advised those who tend to stereotype and discriminate against individuals with dreadlocks to put an end to such behavior.

He emphasized that the stigma associated with dreadlocks is unwarranted and should be eliminated.

“This should be an eye-opener for the other schools that think they have strict rules which are not subject to change. They should reconsider some of these rules” he said.

Ambulance service accused of neglecting dying boy while enforcing ‘protocol’

The family of a seriously ailing boy had to go through a very distressing process just to get their son to the hospital, from their hard-to-reach community in the Volta Region.

Narrating how this came to be, a Facebook user with the name Gati Promise, explained that he was on his way to Ho, the capital of the region, when he encountered the situation.

He added that at a point, they chanced on some people frantically standing by the roadside with a ‘critically-ill boy.’

He said that their car was immediately stopped to allow them in and out of curiosity, he asked them what the challenge was.

“I was traveling to Ho this morning and then got to Ziope Clinic there was this woman with a critically ill boy and the Nurses.

“They stopped the car in which I was for the woman and her son to join the car, I quickly asked the nurse why can’t they call the Ambulance Service to come and pick up the boy at the Hospital,” he said.

Gati Promise continued that the nurse with the family then confirmed to him that they had had trouble getting an ambulance to convey the ailing boy.

He added that they then decided that, perhaps, while on the way, they would meet up with the ambulance and transfer the family into it, but what they found out instead was a shocking one.

He stressed that an officer of the Ambulance Service told him that they had to go through protocol to be able to access the ambulance.

“The nurse confirmed to me that they called them and they promised to come but they don’t know what is keeping them.

“So, we decided to pick up the boy and the mother with the sense that we will meet the ambulance on the way and handover to them.

“We drove to Kpetoe and found out that the ambulance was at the station, I went to the station and met Mr. Dogbey, I narrated the whole story to him and asked him to pick up the boy with the ambulance to Ho but to my surprise, Mr. Dogbey told me he can’t pick up the boy. When I called the regional office, they told me I have to go through protocol,” he narrated.

The narrator also explained that after further investigations from the nurses at the Ziope health facility, he came to the understanding that that terrain was common.

He added that the nurses told him that due to this attitude and behaviour of the Ghana National Ambulance Service, lives had been lost.

“I quickly called the nurses at Ziope Clinic to find out if they called the ambulance service or not, and they confirmed to me that this is not the first time this is happening, they lost lives because of delays and refusal of service from the ambulance service, hmmm. I pray that nothing happens to this boy,” he added.

  • Filmmaker Morton refutes claims that Ghanaian film editors are lazy

Filmmaker Morton refutes claims that Ghanaian film editors are lazy

Renowned filmmaker, Gabriel Mortinno Morton has debunked assertions that Ghanaian film editors are lazy and inefficient in their work.

His comments come after some key stakeholders in the movie industry labeled local film editors as unserious, inefficient, and lazy as they preferred to work with foreign editors.

According to Mortinno Morton, who recently won the Best Video Editor of the Year at this year’s Film Crew Association of Ghana Awards, low budget allocations to big productions do affect the efficiency of film editors.

He noted that the lack of better remuneration and underpaying editors due to friendship do affect their work.

Mortinno Morton urged film producers to be more realistic with their timelines when working with film editors so that they would be able to do a better job.

“I urge all producers to know this, editing takes time, so they should stop treating editors like we just have to blow air on our machines and the editing is done.

“Editing a finished work depends on the type of work an editor is receiving and the type of editor. This also includes the number of days it took to shoot the film, how many hours of footage have been shot, and the producer’s budget for post-production,” he said in an interview.

Mortinno Morton is a Ghanaian freelance film director, editor, and content developer and the founder of ‘mXquared Studios,” a film production company in Ghana.

His experience covers documentaries and fiction films such as Unplugged, God is African, the Ghana by Card comedy special, If Only, and The Burial of Kojo, among others.

Some of his works have been recognized at film festivals and ceremonies such as the Africa Movie Academy Awards, Ghana Movie Awards, Montreal film festival, Accra indie film fest, Australia Inspirational Film Festival, and Cannes Film Festival.

  • Former Ghanaian footballer commits suicide after shooting his wife in Columbus

Former Ghanaian footballer commits suicide after shooting his wife in Columbus

A wave of shock and sorrow has swept through the Ghanaian community in Columbus, Ohio, following a devastating incident involving the Sumankwahene of the Asanteman Association.

Michael Amoako, a 49-year-old Ghanaian man and former footballer, tragically took his own life after shooting his wife, Harriet Yaa Gyamfua Aboagye. The incident has left friends, neighbors, and community members in disbelief as they grapple with the profound loss and search for answers.

According to Kofi Adoma Nwanwani of Kofi TV, the deceased, who was a former footballer, died in a murder-suicide attempt after shooting his 50-year-old wife, identified as Harriet Yaa Gyamfua Aboagye.

Prior to the incident, the deceased sent an audio recording to his family, accusing his wife of seeking to leave him to marry her ex-boyfriend back in Ghana.

“A lot of the report is based on the audio the man sent to his family, in which he was basically issuing his will before the incident. Unfortunately, those who received the audio did not listen to it early, so by the time they realized what had happened, it was already too late.

“If you go to Columbus, the man is reported to be the Sumankwahene of the Asanteman Association. He used to be a goalkeeper popularly known as Chessy, but his real name is Amoako,” Kofi Adomah narrated.

“The report states that he was married to Yaa Gyamfua, and they both lived in the US. He initially won the American Visa Lottery and traveled to the country. He lived in New York for a while before initiating the process to bring Gyamfua along after their marriage. They later moved to Columbus, where they had been living. However, Gyamfua’s mother, who was staying with them, fell ill and had to be brought back home for further treatment but sadly passed away.

“Before the man sent her to America, she was said to have been in a relationship which she left behind to travel. However, according to the husband, Gyamfua, upon her return to America, informed him that she had rekindled her relationship with her ex-boyfriend; Emmanuel Duah, and that they had even started the process of getting married,” Kofi Adoma narrated.

Multiple news reports in the US indicate that Gyamfua is in critical condition and receiving treatment at Riverside Methodist Hospital.

    Police Respond to the Incident

At approximately 10:36 p.m. (US time) on Wednesday, June 7, 2023, Columbus police responded to a report of a domestic violence incident in the 4800 block of Glendon Road. However, as the officers were en route, the situation escalated into a shooting.

Upon arrival, the police discovered that 49-year-old Kwabena Michael Amoako had tragically lost his life. His 50-year-old wife, identified as Yaa Gyamfua, had sustained gunshot wounds and was rushed to Riverside Methodist Hospital in critical condition.

According to Michael Montgomery; a next-door neighbor, the couple had always been pleasant, and they had never witnessed any problems between them. He described the news as “very, very shocking.”

Their neighbor recounted how he learned about the gunfire when the couple’s three young sons knocked on his door seeking help.

“The 16-year-old said they were arguing, they heard two bangs, ran out the door, and came over here,” Montgomery is quoted by Fox 28.

“They heard the shooting, and dad wouldn’t let them back in the house, so they came knocking on the door,” the neighbor added.

The couple, who had been living in the home for nearly a decade, were known for their active involvement in the Ghanaian community in Columbus.

Montgomery expressed his regret, wishing he could have done something to prevent the tragedy. He emphasized that there were no apparent signs of such violence within the family.

Preliminary investigations conducted by the police revealed that Amoako had shot his wife before taking his own life. Due to the severity of the woman’s injuries, the Columbus Police Homicide Unit has taken charge of the investigation.

Member of Parliament for Builsa South, Dr Clement Apaak, has denied claims by Koku Anyidoho, the former Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), suggesting he was sacked by John Mahama less than 48 hours after the death of former President John Evans Atta-Mills.

Energy Minister, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has asserted that Ghana’s energy security in the medium to long term is the topmost priority of the government.

This he said, is the reason he is leading efforts at ensuring that the power and petroleum sectors of the country are strengthened with the relevant legal and regulatory framework.

Dr. Prempeh made this assertion whilst contributing to a panel discussion at the 3rd Ghana Investment and Opportunity Summit (GHIOS) 2023 in London on Wednesday, June 7, 2023 on the topic “The future of Energy in Ghana- exploring the energy mix and the case for renewable energy”.

He said a key catalyst for industrialization is the availability of affordable and accessible energy sources.

“Ghana’s economy over the years has evolved to become ever more dependent on reliable energy supply as typical of middle-income country,” he asserted.

“The thrust of policy objectives of all successive Governments in the energy sector since independence has been the push for a significant increase in its energy resources for social economic development and to become a net exporter of power in the sub-region,” he added.

On investment opportunities in the renewable space of Ghana, the Minister who is also the Member of Parliament for Manhyia South said there exist, among others energy efficiency opportunities which include local production and sale of best-in-class energy appliances, clean cookstoves and the construction of energy-efficient buildings in Ghana.

This declaration highlights his commitment to his principles and suggests a willingness to face the consequences for his actions.

He noted that he is not an angel, but if the only thing that worries authority, especially those who are very powerful but lack political power, is to convict him, then they should continue.

In response to his arrest and subsequent Ghc 2 million bail by the Special Prosecutor following investigations into the work of the Inter-Ministeriall Committee on Illegal Mining (IMCIM), of which Prof Frimpong Boateng was head, he stated that he is not afraid of being convicted.

Following his arrest and subsequent interrogation, he was informed that he required self-recognizance bail in the amount of GH2 million.

Officers from the OSP followed him to his residence in accordance with the bail conditions, following which he was allowed to leave.

  • GNPC starts oil exploration in Northern and Savannah Regions

GNPC starts oil exploration in Northern and Savannah Regions

The Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) has started looking for possible hydrocarbons in the Northern and Savannah Regions, which could be the start of the nation’s first onshore production.

The Voltaian Basin, which is believed to hold substantial hydrocarbon resources, spans about 460 communities in 13 metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies (MMDAs), with 10 of these communities in the Northern Region and three others located in the Savannah Region.

As part of its exploration efforts, GNPC said it has acquired and processed over 3,800-Iine km of 2D seismic data from phase 1 to 3 of the project.

The project is expected to attract investors and will support job opportunities and infrastructure within the 13 MMDAs, if results of the exploration turn out positive.

This came to light when the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of GNPC, Opoku-Ahweneeh Danquah, paid a two-day visit to the onshore sedimentary basin (VBP) sites in the Northern and Savannah Regions.

The CEO, accompanied by deputy Minister of Energy Herbert Krampah, paid a visit to the sites in Yendi, Kpalbe base site, Kakpnade and Karaga in the Northern and Savannah Regions to ascertain progress of the work.

He expressed gratitude to the chiefs and people for their cooperation on the onshore sedimentary basin project.

Mr. Danquah noted that the exploration and commencement of the project will help cushion the economy by increasing job opportunities.

“This project is really a game-changer for the local communities and the country, because Ghanaians will now have on-shore oil and gas drilling while the various communities will benefit from the projects,” he said.

“When the oil is finally found, we will no longer go to the international market but utilize that found in Ghana to build the nation,” he added.

According to the CEO, work will commence from 2023 for the drilling exercise to take place, which will help determine the amount and quality of oil in those sites.

When the drilling exercise takes place, affected farmers will also benefit though certain packages have been provided to them, he stressed.

He called on people of the areas to support GNPC and the Ministry of Energy to ensure the project succeeds.

Herbert Krampah, deputy Minister of Energy, expressed government’s gratitude to the chiefs for their unwavering support since the projects began in their respective communities, and assured of government’s commitment to work with them until the actual project commences.

“We are happy for the project to be executed in the North, because it is going to be a game-changer in the Northern Region – where development will take place massively when the project starts,” he said.

“We have seen what the offshore discoveries have done for the Ghanaian economy; the growth that we see every year is because of oil, and if we find oil onshore I think government would have chalked up a big milestone; and that is why President Akufo-Addo is very committed to this project,” he recounted

The Deputy Chief of Party at BGP-BAY in charge of the Voltaian Basin Project, Frank Gkou Arkoful, said the project has created about 200 direct and indirect jobs in the various communities, and that efforts are being made to address infrastructure concerns.

Despite recent controversies surrounding his work on illegal mining and responses from the government, Professor Frimpong-Boateng, former Minister of Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, has come forward to emphasise his continued cordial relationship with President Nana Akufo-Addo.

In a 36-page document on the fight against illegal mining in the country, he accused some government officials of having interfered in his efforts to combat the menace.

According to the leaked report which went viral, these officials have interests in illegal mining operations in the country, which made his work difficult.

His allegations were however described by the Presidency as ‘hearsays’; amidst exchanges between himself and some government officials, including the Information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah.

But speaking in an exclusive interview with JoyNews on the back of these tensions and news of his recent arrest by the Special Prosecutor, the physician said no rift has been created between himself and his former appointor, president Akufo-Addo.

When asked if he would greet the president if he met him, he responded in the affirmative; adding that, “he [president Akufo-Addo]’ is not that petty”.

“[My relationship with the president] is cordial and business-like; and he knows me very well”; he stated in a special edition on JoyNews’ PM Express on Wednesday.

On Wednesday, June 7, there were widespread reports on he was arrested by the Special Prosecutor a few weeks ago.

According to the reports, he was arrested in connection with his role as the Chairman of the Inter-Ministerial Committee on illegal mining; after he which was granted bail.

Reacting to this, he told host, Evans Mensah, that the arrest did not happen on Wednesday, June 7, as it had been widely circulated.

He noted that he was arrested by the Special Prosecutor to aid some investigations regrading illegal mining activities, during his tenure as Minister for Environment, Science and Technology.

This arrest, he however described as a ‘surprise’; lamenting that he does not deserve the treatment he has received so far.

In his view, he has been ‘demonsied’; even though he was on a path to help the nation.Meanwhile, the Special Prosecutor says it will take action against all persons cited for wrong doing in the controversial report.

In a statement on Tuesday May 2, the OSP said it will take “necessary action”, against all persons implicated in the report authored by renowned heart surgeon.

Goal reports the MLS summer transfer market opens on July 5, so Messi’s debut will not happen until at least next month.

    Potential Messi Miami debut dates

Messi might make his Inter Miami debut on one of three dates marked on the calendar, with the Leagues Cup match against Cruz Azul in Mexico on July 21 being the most likely.

The American side will compete on the road twice during that time, taking on DC United on July 8 and Saint Louis City on July 15.

I feel victimised – Prof Frimpong-Boateng laments over OSP arrest, IMCIM report brouhaha

Former Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation Minister, Professor Frimpong-Boateng, has expressed a deep sense of frustration and a feeling of being victimised following his arrest by the Special Prosecutor over issues relating to illegal mining and the leaked IMCIM report.

The professor, who dedicated most of his life to serving his country and ensuring that illegal mining popularly known as galamsey is brought under control, in an interview with JoyNews, lamented over how he has been treated by (astute) members of the current administration because of how he tackled galamsey during his tenure as IMCIM chairman, especially after an IMCIM report he authored, which captures a series of events that occurred when he was in office, was leaked.

He said he was surprised by the treatment meted out to him, given his selfless contributions to the country.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with JoyNews on the back of reports of his arrest and subsequent release two weeks ago by the Special Prosecutor, the revered heart surgeon recounted his contributions to the success story of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.

The former appointee said though he is not perfect, he sees no wrong in his past conduct as the Chairman of the Inter-ministerial Committee on illegal mining, and therefore his arrest by the Special Prosecutor came to him as a surprise.

Responding to whether or not he feels victimised, he said, “I think so. What have I done wrong in this country? … If 0.001% of people behave like what I’ve done, this country will not be the way it is”.

“As we go along in life in this country, others who have the power or the influence now should know that at some point, they will also be held accountable for what they’re doing”, the embattled scholar added.

Professor Frimpong-Boateng further revealed that following his invitation from the Special Prosecutor, he conferred with some elders of the ruling New Patriotic Party, who urged him to honour the invite.

While refusing to disclose to the names of the said party elders, he said they calmed him about the arrest and urged him to meet the Special Prosecutor out of courtesy.

The renowned heart surgeon received an invitation from the Special Prosecutor a few weeks ago, over his report on the dissolved Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining (IMCIM).

He was then granted bail over his purported arrest.

Meanwhile, the Special Prosecutor says it will take action against all persons cited for wrong doing in the controversial report.

In a statement on Tuesday May 2, the OSP said it will take “necessary action”, against all persons implicated in the report authored by renowned heart surgeon.

Suame interchange project to kick start in July – A/R Urban Roads Director

The Ashanti Regional Director for the Urban Roads Department, Francis Gabrah, has revealed that construction on the Suame interchange is set to begin in July of this year. This disclosure indicates progress in the development of the infrastructure project, which aims to improve transportation and connectivity in the region. The commencement of construction in July marks a significant milestone and paves the way for the realization of a modern and efficient interchange in Suame.

According to him, his outfit has submitted the preliminary design for the project and is optimistic work will be ongoing by July.

Francis Gabrah made this known when the Ashanti Regional Minister, Simon Osei-Mensah, led some officials on Tuesday, June 6, 2023, to visit the project campsite.

“This is a design-and-build contract, where the contractor is responsible for the project’s design and construction. We started the design in February, which is expected to be completed by August. However, we are almost finished. We have submitted the preliminary design, and we are even likely to start physical works by July,” he said.

Speaking in the same vein, the Project Manager of Rango Construction, Mohammed Omar Fazzani, assured that work on the 36-month-long project will take off as soon as the designs are ready.

It would be recalled that in November last year, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo cut the sod for the construction of a four-tier interchange at Suame in Kumasi.

The Suame Interchange project consists of a four-tier interchange at the current Suame Roundabout with overpasses at the Abrepo, Krofrom, Anomangye, Magazine New Road, and Abusuakruwa junctions.

The project, President Akufo-Addo said aims to improve urban mobility in the city and the Ashanti Region at large.

Davido advised to treat his baby mamas with respect

Actress Esther Nwachukwu has reprimanded singer Davido over allegations that he disrespected Sophia Momodu, the mother of his child.

One can recall that Sophia Momodu, the mother of Davido’s first child, Imade, took to social media to rant about the act of financially bullying a woman into staying with men.

In a recent conversation with some fans on Snapchat, the brand influencer hinted at changing the surname of their daughter, Imade Adeleke, to Momodu.

Reacting to the ongoing development, Ms. Nwachwukwu has taken to her Instagram page to call out Davido over the alleged maltreatment being meted out to Sophia.

She has asked the singer to respect his baby mamas and apologize to Sophia Momodu.

According to her, Sophia has received too much humiliation and insults from him and his fans in recent times, adding that, it shouldn’t be the case.

She also established that people have failed to tackle the issue due to sycophancy.

    She said;

Davido should treat his baby mamas right. because you’re married does not mean you should disrespect your baby mama. Davido owes Sophia Momodu an apology. He has other baby mamas yes, but have other baby mamas suffered the humiliations, insult and embarrassment Davido has given to Sophia.

“When Sophia gave birth to Imade, have you all forgotten the humiliation labelled against her by Davido. Sophia has every right to vent her anger, get mad at Davido. Its not about she wanting Davido, she’s a beautiful lady, she can get married to any man she wants, even richer or better than Davido. Its not wrong for a woman to love a man, hence the love is not yielding any fruit. David should apoogise to Sophia, not because he still wants her.”

2 killed in school graduation shooting in Virginia

During a graduation ceremony in Richmond, Virginia, a gunshot left two men dead and numerous more wounded.

On Thursday afternoon, a shooting took place in front of the Altria Theatre, where Huguenot High School was celebrating its graduation.

According to WTVR, two men, ages 18 and 36, were shot and killed. Their identities weren’t right away made public.

According to authorities, a victim, 31, was hospitalised with injuries that may have been fatal. A 14-year-old kid, a 32-year-old guy, a 55-year-old man, and a 58-year-old male also had non-life-threatening wounds.

Another injury involved a 9-year-old who was struck by a car, said Interim Richmond Police Chief Rick Edwards. The child was rushed to a hospital and is expected to survive.

Two suspects were taken into custody after the rampage. One of them was charged with two counts of second-degree murder, while the other individual was released.

Police said the suspect did not appear to be a high school student.

‘At this point, we do not believe there is a threat ongoing threat to the community,’ said Edwards on Tuesday night. ‘We are in the very early stages of this investigation.’

Virginia Commonwealth University Police issued an alert of a shooting at or near Monroe Park shortly after 5pm. The theater is located at the university campus at a section of the park.

School board members were on lockdown in the Altria building and said they heard more than a dozen bangs and that people were taken out in stretchers, CBS 6 reported.

Photos and footage from the scene showed numerous police vehicles outside the theater.

Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney called the shooting both tragic and traumatic.

‘Children were involved here… this is their graduation day,’ said Stoney.

‘The question that comes to my mind right now is, is nothing sacred any longer? Is nothing sacred any longer?’

  • Kilauea volcano in Hawaii erupts, spewing massive lava flows

Kilauea volcano in Hawaii erupts, spewing massive lava flows

On the Big Island of Hawaii, a volcano has erupted and is pouring enormous amounts of lava.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) reports that the Wednesday morning eruption of the Kilauea volcano began just before 4.45am local time.

The crater’s red hot patches were visible on a webcam broadcast, along with boiling lava and smoke.

‘Webcam imagery shows fissures at the base of Halema’uma’u crater generating lava flows on the surface of the crater floor,’ stated the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory.

‘The activity is confined to Halema’uma’u and the hazards will be reassessed as the eruption progresses.’

Hawaii’s Emergency Management Agency stated that there is ‘no indication that populated areas are threatened’.

The eruption for the time being is ‘within a closed area’ of Volcanoes National Park, according to the USGS.

However, ‘very light ashfall’ could make its way to parts of Kau, Puna and South Kona through the evening, the state’s emergency services stated.

  • New York covered in orange haze from wildfires

New York covered in orange haze from wildfires

Currently, there are wildfires raging throughout Canada, and their impacts can be seen on the other side of the border.

More than 150 forest fires are raging in the province, more than 110 of them being considered out of control, and the largest municipality in Canada’s Northern Quebec region is currently being evacuated.

Eastern Canada and the northeastern United States are being covered in smoke as a result of the severe wildfires, and New York City and the state of New England are being affected.

The sky has been turned an unpleasant orange-yellow colour and the air is acrid and smoke-filled.

Late on Tuesday authorities ordered for Chibougamau, the largest town in Northern Quebec, to be evacuated – and the current number of people evacuated from their homes has reached just over 8,300.

Vulnerable people have been warned to stay indoors, away from the smoke.

Premier Francois Legault said: ‘We’re following all of this from hour to hour, obviously.

‘If we look at the situation in Quebec as a whole, there are several places where it is still worrying.’

There is no rain predicted in the upcoming days, which makes it more difficult to fight fires – and in some places the fire has been too intense to send water bombers.

Striking photographs show the smoke has travelled towards New York – and some of its most iconic sights have been blanketed in the bizarre haze.

The Statue of Liberty stands proudly surrounded by the orange glow, while the view of the skyline from one of the city’s many viewpoints is obscured with haze.

Times Square is as busy as ever, with billboards flickering despite the strangely coloured backdrop.

And the city’s iconic silhouette which marks the beginning of countless television programmes set in New York is much less recognisable when obscured with thick smoke.

  • Rescuers save animals after Ukraine dam blast

Rescuers save animals after Ukraine dam blast

After a dam in Ukraine was blown up, volunteers fought all night to save thousands of animals from devastating flooding.

Nova Kakhovka, in Kherson Oblast, which Russia has occupied since February 2022, was awakened early yesterday morning by an explosion in the hydroelectric power plant’s engine room.

In footage, water was seen rushing through the ruins and rising by metres in a couple of hours.on.

Ukraine and Russia blamed each other for the destruction of the massive dam, which has put 42,000 people at risk from flooding.

As more than 17,000 residents fled their houses on the banks of the Dnipro River, wading through knee-deep water, many had to abandon their pets and livestock to save themselves.

This is where UAnimals, which works to shelter and rehabilitate animals during the Russian invasion, has stepped in.

Founder Oleksandr Todorchuk told Metro.co.uk that so far 10 buses and about 20 volunteers have been deployed to the scene of the catastrophe to help domestic and wild animals.

‘Kherson Oblast is rich in wild animals, like deer. Floodwater can kill thousands of animals, from domestic to wild ones,’ he said.

‘We deployed 10 buses to the flooded region in the morning. We work not only with pets like cats and dogs, but also wild and domestic animals, like cattle.

‘We are doing our best to save them, but more animals will die than we can save.

‘When people are evacuating, they have no time or ability to take the animals, or even unlock rooms where they are sleeping, so this creates a huge problem.

‘Street animals also present a huge difficulty. It is the same for wild animals. No one helps them as usual, so we are trying to do our best.’

UAnimals has also brought several tonnes of pet food to distribute to shelters and owners whose belongings have perished in the floodwater.

Mr Todorchuk admitted this will be a ‘very difficult’ week for his volunteers who he described as ‘heroes’.

The founder has previously warned wild and domestic animals are dying en masse in bombings and minefield explosions during the invasion.

Since the beginning of the war, his volunteers have travelled to some of the most treacherous parts of the frontline to evacuate animals, and thousands have been relocated to shelters in Kyiv and abroad, including 20 lions.

Currently, a large part of the team is coordinating the rescue efforts in villages on the right bank of the Dnipro River – Mykolayivka, Olhivka, Tyahynka, Ponyativka, Lyovo, Ivanivka, Tokarivka, Prydniprovske, Sadove, and part of Kherson – Korabel Island.

More than £250,000 has been raised in the last 24 hours to help their work after the dam explosion.

Mr Todorchuk was unsure how many animals can be rescued in the region. It all depends on the level of devastation, how long it takes the teams to capture them and how quickly they can be rehomed.

‘I think we can save hundreds of animals,’ he said. ‘There is also the question of how many days we will be able to work there because of the war.

When Metro.co.uk spoke with him on Tuesday afternoon, his volunteers had just started their work, so there was no update on the number of animals they’ve saved so far.

Mr Todorchuk said fewer than 100 had been helped at the time, but he insisted that by this morning this number will have grown.

What has only worsened the already dire situation is that Russian forces began shelling flooded areas where evacuation efforts were ongoing, injuring at least two police officers.

‘For more than a year we have operated under a full-scale invasion, often working in occupied territories,’ he said.

‘It is really hard and dangerous because of constant bombings and mines, but we have learnt to work in such situations and Ukrainian soldiers guide us.

‘It is heartbreaking that we cannot help the entire southern region as part of it is still occupied by the Russian army, but we are communicating with shelters in that territory.’

Yesterday, Metro.co.uk reported that a zoo called Kazkova Dibrova, located on the bank of the Dnipro River, was completely flooded.

All of the animals drowned, apart from birds that could escape, Mr Todorchuk said.

Volodymyr Zelensky declared the dam destruction an ‘environmental bomb of mass destruction’, while the UN warned of ‘grave and far-reaching consequences’.

Residents on Nova Kakhovka were urged to take documents, food for three days and drinking water, and leave residential buildings. Thousands have already been evacuated.

  • F1 ditches South Africa return due to Russia links

F1 ditches South Africa return due to Russia links

The South African Grand Prix’s eagerly anticipated return to the F1 schedule has been postponed due to the nation’s relations with Russia.

While refusing to criticise the invasion and taking a neutral posture on the conflict in Ukraine, South Africa has recently been accused of arming Russia, a charge that President Cyril Ramaphosa has vehemently refuted.

The scenario has placed the African country in a challenging political position, which F1 chiefs have apparently acknowledged and are now supposedly addressing.

According to RacingNews365, plans to revive the race that was last held in 1993 have been abandoned, news that will no doubt disappoint fans who have been calling for its return for years.

This will include Sir Lewis Hamilton, who has repeatedly stated his desire to race in Africa, saying back in April 2022: ‘We’re pretty much on every other continent, so why not? Ultimately, my ancestors are from there so that’s why it is important for me personally.’

F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali echoed this sentiment, adding that an African race would be their next priority once they had sorted the additions of the Miami and Las Vegas Grand Prix.

And though there have been many difficult financial hurdles to overcome, there was confidence that a deal could be struck soon for the event to be held at the newly renovated Kyalami circuit.

The South African Grand Prix was first held back in 1962 and moved to Kyalami five years later where it remained until the mid 1980s when it was removed from the calendar because of Apartheid, before returning in 1992 only for financial issues to see it cancelled just a year later.

Had South Africa made it onto the 2024 calendar, it would likely have taken the place of the Belgian Grand Prix which has been under threat for some time despite its popularity among fans and drivers.

But with F1 chiefs determined to have a record-breaking 24-race calendar, they will now likely strive to renew its contract for at least another year.

2023 was meant to have been the first 24-race season in the sport’s history, only for China to be cancelled because of COVID while the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix was also called off due to major flooding in the Italian region.

In the meantime, this season continues with the Canadian Grand Prix on 18th June.

22 tonnes of carpet glue spill causes traffic jam for drivers

This morning’s heavy traffic was caused by a truck crash that resulted in tonnes of carpet adhesive being spilled.

The truck crashed on the SH1 motorway on-ramp at 11.20 a.m. local time in South Auckland, New Zealand.

According to the NZ Herald, the truck also took fire and was burning by the side of the road, which caused traffic to be stopped.

The motorway‘s two southbound lanes were shut down, and diversions caused traffic jams on several of the nearby roads.

Emergency services were desperately trying to block the nearby drains, to reduce the amount of glue getting into the water system.

It’s believed the truck was carrying a huge 22 tonnes of carpet glue, and the clean-up effort will continue ‘for some time today’.

Auckland Council’s pollution response team is on scene investigating the incident.

Compliance manager Adrian Wilson said: ‘The spillage is contained at present, and our officers are carrying out further investigations to determine any impacts on the stormwater network.’

Local police confirmed there were no injuries reported.

  • Putin may target nuclear plant after dam explosion

Putin may target nuclear plant after dam explosion

Following explosions at a significant dam and hydroelectric facility that resulted in widespread flooding and an ecological catastrophe, Russia may be planning to destroy the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power facility.

Volodymyr Zelensky, the president of Ukraine, charged Russia with setting off a “environmental bomb of mass destruction” at the Nova Kakhovka dam in Kherson yesterday, causing “catastrophic” flooding across the area.

According to Zelensky, “one of Ukraine’s largest water reservoirs was deliberately destroyed.” “Thousands of people have been left without access to clean drinking water on a regular basis.”

Meanwhile Ukraine’s top security official Oleksiy Danilov said the dam blast was  ‘a fundamentally new stage of Russian aggression,’ and warned that the nearby nuclear power plant in Zaporizhzhia could be Putin’s next target.

The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) has been under Russian control since the start of the war (Picture: Reuters)

The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) has been under Russian control since the start of the war, and is reliant on water from the dam to cool its reactors.

‘It is a fact there are explosives [at the occupied Zaporizhzhia plant],’ Danilov told the Times, and said since Putin had the hydroelectric power plant blown up on his demand, he’s ‘ready to do anything.’

The plant has been shelled repeatedly throughout the war, sparking fears of a nuclear meltdown last year when rockets hit one of the plant’s reactors, which both Ukraine and Russia claimed the other was responsible for.

Russian forces have been accused of converting the plant into a military base and are ‘sufficiently protected’ from being re-captured by force, pro-Kremlin media reports.

Raphael Grossi, head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said this morning that the breach poses no short term risk to the ZNPP, but admitted the situation was making an already very difficult and unpredictable nuclear safety and security situation even worse.

The dam’s reservoir provides water used for the essential cooling of the six reactors at Europe’s biggest nuclear power plant, and is set to displace tens of thousands of people.

Dramatic scenes from throughout Kherson saw entire homes swept away by the dam blast, while in some communities people were forced to spend the night on the roof of their homes to avoid getting swept away.

The cause of the blasts is not yet clear, although Ukraine warned late last year that Russian forces had mined the dam as they retreated from Kherson.

At an emergency security council meeting yesterday, President Zelensky blamed the breach on ‘Russian terrorists’, saying it underlined the need for Ukraine to liberate all its territory from its neighbour’s occupation.

The President condemned the incident as the ‘largest human-made environmental disaster in Europe in decades’.

Russia has accused Kyiv of blowing up the dam themselves to distract from what they perceive to be a failing Ukrainian counteroffensive, using shells to breach the dam walls.

But although the cause of the blast is not yet clear, Ukraine warned late last year that Russian forces had mined the dam as they retreated from Kherson and Ukraine’s state hydroelectric company said the Kakhovka plant was destroyed by an explosion in the engine room- suggesting it was attacked from within rather than by external strikes.

‘Russia has controlled the dam and the entire Kakhovka hydro power plant for more than a year,’ Zelensky said.

‘It is physically impossible to blow it up somehow from the outside, by shelling. It was mined by the Russian occupiers. And they blew it up.’

Britain’s Ministry of Defense, which has regularly issued updates about the war, said the Kakhovka reservoir was at ‘record high’ water levels before the breach.

While the dam wasn’t entirely washed away, the ministry warned that its structure ‘is likely to deteriorate further over the next few days, causing additional flooding.’

Ukraine’s minister of internal affairs said Russian shelling was hampering attempts to evacuate people from the flooded regions.

‘The Russian military continues to shell territory where evacuation measures are being carried out,’ he told Ukrainian television, saying two policemen had been wounded by artillery fire.

The floodwaters have also washed landmines from positions on the Russian-controlled eastern bank, creating an additional danger for those seeking to escape, he said.

Kyiv said 150 tonnes of engine oil had spilled into the river, and the agricultural ministry said about 10 thousand hectares of farmland on the right bank of the river would be flooded and ‘several times more’ on the left bank.

Rishi Sunak said it was too soon to make a ‘definitive judgement’ that Moscow’s forces were responsible.

Sunak added: ‘But if it’s intentional, it would represent, I think, the largest attack on civilian infrastructure in Ukraine since the start of the war, and just demonstrate the new lows that we would have seen from Russian aggression.’

  • Whistleblower claims US has alien technology

Whistleblower claims US has alien technology

The US government is allegedly concealing tangible proof of “intact and partially intact” alien vehicles, according to a former US intelligence officer.

Whistleblower David Charles Grusch told numerous news organisations this week that the government has UFO proof but is hiding it from the public.

Information about these vehicles was being unlawfully hidden from Congress, according to Grusch, who oversaw the research of unexplained anomalous phenomena (UAP) at a US Department of Defence office.

He added that when he turned over classified information about the vehicles to Congress, he suffered retaliation from officials.

Grusch, 36, left the government in April after a 14-year career in US intelligence with the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) and the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO).

He served as the reconnaissance office’s representative to the Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAP) Task Force from 2019-2021. From late 2021 to July 2022, he was the NGA’s co-lead for UAP analysis and its representative to the task force.

Claims of the existence of ‘exotic materials’ was confirmed by Jonathan Grey, a current US intelligence official at the National Air and Space Intelligence Center (Nasic), who told the the Debrief ‘We are not alone’.

The news follows last week’s public presentation by Nasa’s UFO taskforce where footage of an unidentifiable ‘spherical orb’ UFO flying through the Middle East was released.

However, the group of experts was able to conclusively identify many of the aerial phenomena they have studied over the past year.

In 2021, the US government released a nine-page report reviewing 120 incidents recorded by the military, which sent shockwaves through the alien-hunting online community.

Grusch spoke to The Debrief journalists Leslie Kean and Ralph Blumenthal, who previously exposed the existence of a secret Pentagon program that investigated UFOs.

In the interview, he said the US government had been recovering fragments of non-human craft, and in some cases entire craft, for decades.

  • Russian war in Ukraine damages climate efforts – Report

Russian war in Ukraine damages climate efforts – Report

Millions of people have been forced to evacuate the country as a result of the war in Ukraine, and it has devastated countless houses, hospitals, and schools. The violence is also contributing to a global calamity at a time when the world is already having trouble meeting its climate goals, a new report claims, in addition to the immediate, visceral effects.

The first year of the conflict, which began in February 2022, has been assessed by a team of experts in carbon accounting.

They found that a total of 120 million metric tons of planet-heating pollution can be attributed to the first 12 months of the war, according to the report published Wednesday. That’s equivalent to the annual emissions of Belgium, or those produced by nearly 27 million gas-powered cars on the road for a year.

“It’s the first time that the emissions of a war have been mapped on such a comprehensive scale,” Lennard de Klerk, the report’s lead author and an expert in war-related emissions, told CNN.

The report, titled Climate Damage Caused by Russia’s War in Ukraine, follows on from a first interim assessment presented at the UN COP27 climate conference in November 2022.

Data was drawn from a wide range of sources, including satellites, scientific papers, expert interviews, industry reports and open-source intelligence.

The team of researchers looked at the climate impact of the planet-heating pollution produced directly from warfare, including fuel use for tanks, planes and other equipment, construction of fortifications and production of weapons. They also examined impacts from the consequences of the war, such as fires, destruction – and required reconstruction – of infrastructure and changes to the European energy mix.

Nearly 22 million metric tons of planet-heating pollution came from warfare, almost 20% of the total emissions attributable to the conflict, the report found.

But this may be a conservative estimate. The emissions of the military were challenging to calculate, de Klerk told CNN. It’s not possible, for example, to just get in touch with Russia to ask them how much fuel they are using in their tanks and planes, he said.

“We probably will only be able to really get a more accurate estimate once the war is over,” de Klerk said.

Others were easier to calculate, especially the amount of planet-warming pollution from fires caused by shelling, bombing and explosions. Using remote monitoring tools based on satellite data, the researchers concluded that these fires produced nearly 18 million metric tons, accounting for 15% of the total war emissions

The number of fires burning over an area larger than one hectare (2.5 acres) increased 36-fold in the first year of the war compared to the 12 months before it started, according to the report. While the winter months saw fire activity dip, it is expected to pick up again as summer approaches, de Klerk said.

The biggest climate impact, however, accounting for almost half the pollution from the war, will come from the post-war reconstruction of damaged and destroyed buildings and infrastructure, the report found.

Rebuilding will require vast amounts of materials such as cement and concrete, which produce very high levels of carbon pollution.

Over the course of the conflict, increasing Russian attacks on and destruction of energy infrastructure has pushed up the planet-heating pollution estimated to be produced during reconstruction, the report found.

“The biggest chunk of the emissions are still in the future reconstruction of Ukraine,” de Klerk said.

The report also looked at impacts outside of Ukraine, including the methane pollution released after the sabotage of the Russian gas pipelines Nord Stream 1 and 2 in September 2022. “We had an enormous release of methane emissions… that was really a surprise,” de Klerk said.

Changes to Europe’s energy mix were also analyzed but found a mixed outcome.

Very high prices for gas and oil following Russia’s invasion caused Europe to make some decisions, including burning more coal, which increased levels of planet-heating pollution. But the conflict also helped usher in a faster transition to renewables, as countries looked to lessen their dependence on Russian oil and gas.

The report authors even calculated the extra planet-warming pollution created by airlines rerouting flights to avoid Russian and Ukrainian airspace.

“If you look at the environmental costs of what’s happening in Ukraine, that war is a catastrophe when it comes to carbon emissions,” James Appathurai, NATO’s deputy assistant secretary general for emerging security challenges, told Reuters.

As the war continues to unfold in Ukraine, “the human catastrophe and the damage that’s being done to the country is overwhelming,” de Klerk said. Climate considerations will not be what’s occupying Ukrainians at the moment, he acknowledged, adding: “It’s a matter of survival.”

But it is still important to analyze and document the often overlooked, longer-term climate impacts of the conflict, he said.

“We want to show the world that the damage that Russia is doing with these acts of aggression is not only within Ukraine, but impacts the whole world through the additional emissions of greenhouse gases, which is everyone’s problem,” he said.

Global commitments to keep warming within 1.5 degrees Celsius of pre-industrial levels are already slipping out of reach.

Rachel Kyte, dean of The Fletcher School at Tufts University, who was not involved in the research, said the report highlighted the crucial impact of war on the world’s ability to tackle climate change

“The report raises important questions about including warfare in countries’ climate reporting and their transitions to net-zero and to greater resilience,” she told CNN. “For the whole of Europe, and the world, Ukraine’s reconstruction, following a just peace, must be green.”

The war in Ukraine has shown the importance of understanding the climate impact of warfare, de Klerk said, adding: “It’s something that we simply cannot continue to ignore.”

  • DVLA collaborates with Ghana Post to deliver drivers’ licenses at GHS 30

DVLA collaborates with Ghana Post to deliver drivers’ licenses at GHS 30

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) and Ghana Post Company Limited have joined forces to introduce a new system for delivering drivers’ licenses directly to clients. This innovative initiative allows license holders to receive their documents at their preferred locations, including their homes, offices, or any other convenient place at a fee of GHS 30.

Speaking at the launch, Chief Executive Officer of DVLA, Kwasi Agyeman Busia revealed that the service was instituted with a customer centric approach hence the flat rate of GHS 30 per delivery across the country.

“For over 20 years, DVLA has provided regulated framework for more effective administration of driver licensing and vehicle registration. The recent growth of the DVLA’s consumer base has made it necessary for the authority to explore and improve means to efficiently deliver driver licenses to our clients,” he said.

The delivery service is part of DVLA’s efforts to contribute to the digitalisation agenda. The service which will be run by the Ghana Post seeks to clear 80,000 uncollected cards, prevent congestion at DVLA offices and increase compliance by clients among others.

Mr. Busia indicated that, “the foundation of our strategic plan pivots on the admixture of people, process and technology. This association with a government institution with core competency in package delivery and nationwide distribution apparatus augmented by digitisation is therefore obvious, needful and necessary”.

Managing Director of Ghana Post Company Limited, Bice Osei-Kuffuor intimated that the country’s Global Positioning System infrastructure is of high quality. He says his outfit is therefore equipped to deliver the task.

“It does not matter where you are in Ghana, DVLA will process the license and Ghana Post will deliver. Fellow Ghanaians, kindly leave that bit of the stress to us and concentrate on other assignments because at a token fee of just ¢30 we shall deliver with speed, efficiency and on time,” he assured.

Both institutions emphasised the need to foster public-public partnerships.

  • ISSER proposes measures to make free SHS robust

ISSER proposes measures to make free SHS robust

The Institute of Statistical, Social and Economic Research (ISSER) has put forward a set of proposals aimed at making Ghana’s Free Senior High School (SHS) education system more robust and effective.

The suggested measures seek to address existing challenges and ensure the program’s sustainability while providing quality education to all eligible students across the country.

Fresh data released by the Institute has revealed a troubling decline in net enrolment rates (NER) at the primary and junior high school (JHS) levels in Ghana.

Despite the successful implementation of the Free Senior High School (SHS) programme, these statistics have raised serious concerns about the sustainability and effectiveness of the education initiative.

ISSER has now called for a national discussion on the financing of the Free SHS programme, stressing the importance of balanced funding, collaborative efforts, and enhanced monitoring and evaluation.

The latest publication of the Social Development Outlook by ISSER indicates a significant decrease in NER at both the JHS and primary levels. Since 2017, the NER at the JHS level has steadily declined from around 50% to an average of 45% in 2020. Similarly, at the primary level, the NER has experienced a decline from an average of 91% to 80%. These findings, according to the elite research institution, indicate a worrying trend, suggesting a low transition rate from primary education to JHS and raising concerns about the overall health of the foundational education sector.

While the Free SHS programme has achieved remarkable success in increasing enrolment rates at the senior high school level, with NER rising from below 30% in 2017 to as high as 70% between 2019 and 2020, the decline in NER at the JHS and primary levels has sparked concerns about the long-term consequences of this policy.

While the initiative has expanded access to secondary education, it appears to have inadvertently shifted focus away from the fundamental levels of education.

ISSER has identified several key factors contributing to the decline in NER at the JHS and primary levels. One of the primary challenges is the delay in disbursing the school capitation grant, leaving schools struggling to operate without the necessary funds for nearly a year.

Furthermore, the routine delay or non-payment of school feeding caterers has become a distressing norm, compromising the provision of nutritious meals to students. These funding issues have created significant hardships for schools, impeding their ability to deliver quality education.

In response to these pressing challenges, ISSER has put forward a series of recommendations to address the declining enrolment rates and ensure the sustainability and effectiveness of the Free SHS programme. The recommendations include:

    • Balanced Funding: ISSER emphasizes the need for the government to allocate resources equitably between the Free SHS programme and basic education, ensuring both sectors receive adequate funding to maintain and improve their quality.
    • Addressing the Access-Quality Imbalance: Striking a balance between expanding access to education and maintaining high-quality standards is crucial. ISSER advocates for investment in infrastructure, teacher training, and educational resources to enhance the overall quality of education at the JHS and primary levels.
    • National Discussion on Free SHS Financing: ISSER calls for a comprehensive national discussion involving policymakers, education experts, stakeholders, and the general public to critically examine the financing mechanisms of the Free SHS programme. This discussion aims to identify sustainable funding sources and address the challenges faced by the basic education sector.
    • Collaboration and Stakeholder Engagement: ISSER emphasizes the necessity of effective collaboration among all stakeholders, including government agencies, educational institutions, communities, and parents. Such collaboration is vital in developing comprehensive solutions and ensuring the successful implementation of necessary reforms.

The call to action from ISSER serves as a wake-up call for policymakers and stakeholders to prioritise the basic education sector, provide adequate funding, and work collaboratively to overcome the existing challenges.

By taking these crucial steps, Ghana can pave the way for a brighter future where every child has access to quality education and the opportunity to reach their full potential.

Mexico confirms human remains in 45 bags belong to missing call center staff

Mexican officials have determined that the human remains discovered in 45 bags located in a Guadalajara suburb belong to call centre employees who vanished in May.

The next of kin have been notified, according to the Jalisco Institute of Forensic Sciences (IJCF), which reported Tuesday that testing had proved the bodies belonged to the missing workers. It was unclear, though, if the bags contained the remains of all seven of the missing workers.

Sometime after May 20, the seven employees vanished from the Guadalajara metropolitan area. When bags containing human body parts were discovered in a ravine in the municipality of Zapopan last week, the search for them took a macabre turn.

Mexico’s Secretary of Security Rosa Icela Rodriguez Velazquez said last Tuesday that initial investigations suggested the workers might have been involved in “some type of real estate fraud” and “telephone extortion.”

CNN cannot independently verify the Secretary of Security’s claims.

Mexico has been troubled by an epidemic of disappearances with more than 100,000 Mexicans and migrants still missing.

More than 1,500 bodies have been found in Jalisco state since 2018, official figures show. According to the office of the Jalisco’s special prosecutor for missing persons, 291 bodies were discovered in 2019, 544 bodies were found in 2020, 280 bodies in 2021, and 301 the following year. So far in 2023, 147 bodies have been found.

In March, after four Americans were kidnapped in Mexico, resulting in the deaths of two of them, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador argued that Mexico is a safer country than the United States.

Kidnapping and human trafficking are also not unusual in parts of Mexico, particularly in border areas and Mexico’s overall homicide rate is among the highest in the world.

  • Caterers advocate for GHS 3.50 increment per child in School Feeding Programme

Caterers advocate for GHS 3.50 increment per child in School Feeding Programme

Caterers under the School Feeding Programme have put forth a proposal for an increment in the amount allocated per child. They are asking government to raise the current rate to GHS 3.50 per child, citing rising costs and the need for sustainable operations to provide nutritious meals to students.

This comes after the government announced an increment of cost per meal, per child from 98 pesewas to GHS 1.20.

The Minister for Gender and Social Protection, Lariba Zuweira Abudu, who announced this, said there are talks with the Ministry of Finance to see how best the amount can be reviewed.

But the caterers have vehemently rejected the proposed increment noting that it is woefully inadequate to feed the children.

    President, Charlotte Asante

Speaking on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem Tuesday, President of the School Feeding Caterers’ Association, Charlotte Asante, justified their position.

She explained that the caterers are suffering to feed the pupils with a balanced meal due to the hikes in the prices of food.

“We try to balance but things are not balancing because the money is too small; we are really suffering,” he bemoaned.

The distraught caterer said the pupils are expected to be fed a balanced meal, but the government is failing to pay to aid in the preparation of the meals.

She could not fathom why government cannot commit just GHS 3.50 per child to sustain such a laudable programme.

She said they have resolved not to cook until government reviews the paltry ¢1.20 per child.

The Ghana School Feeding Programme, an intervention by the Government of Ghana, started in 2005 to provide food to children in public basic schools from kindergarten to primary six.

The programme aims to increase school enrolment, attendance and retention, reduce short-term hunger and malnutrition and boost domestic food production.

  • Gyakye Quayson vows to fight for Assin North with his last breath

Gyakye Quayson vows to fight for Assin North with his last breath

Member of Parliament aspirant on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for the Assin North Constituency, James Gyakye Quayson, has vowed to reclaim the Assin North seat even if it takes his last breath.

He made this statement when he visited the Assin North constituency to campaign ahead of the by-election slated for June 27, 2023.

In a video posted by Accra-based TV3, the ousted MP was expressing his unwavering determination to continue to fight for the seat despite facing setbacks and being removed from office.

“I will fight for Assin North with my last breath. In every family, there is a Judas, as you are trying to pack things up others will be ready to destroy. But I know whoever is fighting something not for selfish gain but for the gains of the public, God crowns his efforts. The vision here is not a selfish vision. It is a vision for the whole Assin North community and its people. So, I know definitely we will achieve it,” he said.

The MP aspirant further called on his supporter and members of the National Democratic Congress to consolidate their efforts to capture ‘recapture’ the seat in the by-election.

“Let us all put our efforts together. And those saying that, once Joe Quayson steps foot here we will arrest him, among others. I came here from Accra nobody was able to stop me. I don’t fear anything, I only fear God. In the life I have lived, there is nothing that will done by will cause me to fear. As much as I have lived, I am no longer moved by anything done to me,” he added.

He continued to say that regardless of the disruption, he will still stand for the Assin North Constituency.

“Whatever they do, I will stand for Assin North” he declared.

  • 12-year-old girl dies from failed abortion

12-year-old girl dies from failed abortion

In a heart-wrenching incident, a young girl has tragically lost her life after what is being reported as a failed abortion attempt. The incident has sparked shock and concern, shedding light on the pressing issue of unsafe abortions and the need for proper reproductive healthcare.

The girl, 12-year-old Augustina Gabriel, who resides at Telekubukazo, a community in the Ellembelle District of the Western Region, is reported to have been pronounced dead on arrival at the St. Martin de Porres Hospital in Eikwe.

Narrating what happened, Jonas Kubatey, the Ellembelle Social Welfare Officer, who confirmed the news of the death of the girl, said that there were suspicions that she died from the effects of a failed abortion.

He added that she was five-months pregnant at the time.

“We believe she took unprescribed medicine to get rid of the five-month-old pregnancy but she started having complications and was rushed to the Esiama Hospital where she was given First Aid. The Hospital even noticed that the placenta was already out before she was rushed there.

“Her situation was getting worse so they transferred her to the St. Martin de Porres Hospital at Eikwe where she was pronounced dead on arrival,” he said.

The officer further explained that the person who impregnant the deceased Augustina was a 21-year-old man living in the same area with her, and that her parents were aware of this relationship.

“She started having an affair with the boy at the age of eleven to the extent that the girl sometimes sleeps over at her boyfriend’s house.

“Her parents, who are herbalists, were even aware of the situation and they agreed to it since they were benefitting financially from the relationship,” he further added.

He added that the young man has since been invited to aid in some investigations.

Jonas Kabutey, however, stated that the case of the late Augustina is not an isolated one.

He explained that similar cases are a norm in the area, and being the paralegal of the Western Region, he called for support to be able to get this situation addressed properly.

“These issues are rampant in the Ellembelle District and when that happens, the parents refuse to report the case. They take money from the suspects and allow the case to slide. We need the intervention of NGOs and other organizations to help in curbing the situation.

“We need to have a lot of education for the people of Ellembelle on some of these things. We have Free Education so we don’t understand why parents allow their girl children in the Ellembelle District to follow men instead of being in school,” he stressed.

  • The ghost of reshuffle is still haunting NDC – ACEPA Boss

The ghost of reshuffle is still haunting NDC – ACEPA Boss

The Executive Director of the African Centre for Parliamentary Affairs (ACEPA), Dr Rahseed Draman, has made claims that the minority in Parliament is having a negative ripple effect as a result of its previous reshuffle in the minority leadership.

His claim was sighted by GhanaWeb in a 3news.com report.

According to him, it appears that the current Minority leadership has not been fully embraced by the Minority caucus, necessitating additional efforts on their part.

Haruna Iddrisu, James Klutse Avedzi and Mohammed-Muntaka Mubarak as Minority Leader, Deputy Minority Leader and Minority Chief Whip, respectively, were removed by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) leadership and replaced with Dr Casiel Ato Forson, Emmanuel Armah Kofi-Buah and Kwame Agbodza as leaders of the minority.

This change, according to the Executive Director, has resulted in agitation among the Minority caucus.

“It looks like the ghost of the reshuffle in the Minority bench is still haunting the caucus, and I am not (the only one) saying this. This has been said by people like Muntaka; said by the former Minority leader, and today when we listen to proceedings in Parliament, the Majority Leader jokingly took a jab at the Minority Leader [Dr Cassiel Ato Forson] and said you have not been confirmed yet,” he said.

Dr Rahseed Draman further explained that because the minority side has not fully accepted the new leadership, a lot of work needs to be done even as 17 of their members will not be returning to Parliament.

“The new leadership has not been fully accepted by the rank and file of the Minority caucus, so there is a lot of work that needs to be done for the leadership to endear themselves to the entire caucus, particularly given its dilemma that is facing them where they have 17 of their members that are likely not to come back,” he added.

  • India’s problem with brutal killings of young girls is worsening – Advocates

India’s problem with brutal killings of young girls is worsening – Advocates

As others walk by, a teenage girl is fatally stabbed and beaten.

Similar destiny befalls an even younger girl, who was supposedly targeted by her own father because she and her mother decided to spend the night on the patio.

In India last month, these two horrible incidents occurred ten days apart, yet eminent Supreme Court counsel Jayna Kothari noted that violence against women has been rising for the past ten years.

“For the last 10 years we’ve been seeing these gruesome murders and violent incidents. I don’t think anything has been done much,” said Kothari, who is known for her work on cases related to gender and sexuality.

That decade spans the years since “Nirbhaya,” a 23-year-old student, died after being gang-raped on a Delhi bus in 2012. Advocates had hoped the shocking murder case would represent a watershed moment in India’s approach to violence against women.

But while outrage in the more immediate aftermath of the attack did lead to stronger rape laws, Kothari and many others say in reality little has changed.

“The crimes are continuing but there’s no visible action taken,” Kothari said.

In fact, as others like Swati Maliwal, chairperson of the Delhi Commission for Women, point out, such crimes are becoming more common.

“The intensity of the crime, the frequency of the crime and the brutality of the crimes have gone up,” she said.

The most recent incidents are merely the latest in a long line of violent crimes that have triggered anger about whether the government is doing enough to protect women and punish attackers.

According to India’s National Crime Records Bureau, crimes against women rose 87% over 10 years between 2011 and 2021 – with most cases in the latter year relating to alleged “cruelty by husband or his relatives” and assault.

CNN asked various arms of the Indian government whether there are any plans or strategies to crack down on violence against women, but has not received a response.

Kothari, the lawyer, believes authorities have become too complacent since Nirbhaya’s fatal assault. Since the reforms that followed the case – which included broadening the definition of rape, raising the minimum punishment for the offense to seven years in jail and increasing the age of consent from 16 to 18 – she says there’s been “a sense with the courts, police, the government, that now everything is being done.”

But recent events show otherwise, she argues. Kothari points to the incident in Gujarat’s Surat district on May 19, in which a father allegedly attacked his wife and daughter with a knife because they wanted to sleep on the terrace of their house, rather than inside, as evidence that domestic violence remains “a pervasive issue, even today.”

“It hasn’t been addressed,” Kothari said. “In India, still, people don’t want to talk about domestic violence.”

She says the attack in Delhi, where people passed by as a girl was repeatedly stabbed by her male attacker, is especially worrying. She’s concerned that it suggests a societal apathy towards violence against women and girls, or worse, acceptance.

“I think why the recent case is so shocking is it happened so blatantly in a public place,” Kothari said. “It’s almost as if socially, people don’t see anything wrong. What has our society turned to that a young man can feel like he can do this, and people around are also OK with this?”

In the absence of action, Kothari and other advocates warn that young girls and women will grow up believing such violence is to be expected.

“These crimes make them feel that it’s not safe for them to be in relationships, to exercise their autonomy,” she said. “What are we doing to protect the rights of young girls? Their right to be safe, their right to be free, and their right to be unafraid that these incidents are not going to happen.”

Yogita Bhayana, founder of People Against Rapes in India, said it was “very unfortunate” that Indians had “learned to live with this kind of situation in our country.”

Advocates say many cases go unreported due in part to a culture of victim shaming in what remains a highly patriarchal society and a lack of confidence in the police.

“The problem is vast. When we talk about gender violence, it’s much bigger than what we think,” Bhayana said.

Maliwal, chair of the Delhi Commission for Women, expressed a similar sentiment.

“Of course there is patriarchy, of course there is misogyny, and it is widespread,” she said. “But what is the difference here is our politicians are not willing to commit and walk the talk. So they will blame the people when actually it is not the people but the systems that need to be blamed.”

Another source of frustration is how slowly the wheels of justice can move in India.

Maliwal cited a case involving the rape of an 8-month-old girl in 2018 and the fact it was still working its way through the courts as reflecting the depth of the problem.

“How is it that an 8-month-old baby gets raped in 2018 and her case has not finished?” she asked.

Some campaigners say misogyny runs so deep in India’s patriarchal society that the system fails all women, regardless of their status.

Maliwal pointed to recent protests by high-profile female wrestlers, who are demanding an inquiry into claims of sexual harassment by the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) President Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who denies all allegations.

Following a weeks-long sit-in, police finally registered a case in April, four months after the initial complaint was filed. The wrestlers, including some well-known Olympians, continued protesting on the streets until last month when some were dragged away and detained by police who said they had failed to follow officers’ orders.

Maliwal suggested their arrest further eroded trust in the police and justice system.

“Tomorrow, if a girl faces sexual harassment in the workplace, how will she be able to muster the courage to report the matter because she’s already seen what happens when somebody reports the case?” she asked.

“When such big stars of the country … are not given justice, what hope is there for anyone?”

McBrown’s husband proposed to me but we never dated – Diamond Appiah

    Diamond Appiah
has responded to allegations suggesting that she was previously involved in a romantic relationship with Mr. Maxwell Mensah, prior to his marriage to Nana Ama McBrown. In her response, Diamond Appiah clarified that the claims were entirely false and unsubstantiated. She emphasized that she has never been romantically involved with Mr. Maxwell Mensah and urged the public to disregard such baseless rumors.

Earlier, Diamond Appiah’s former best friend, Naana Brown, stormed social media with claims that Diamond dated Maxwell a couple of years ago.

Naana Brown established without proof that Diamond Appiah snatched Mr. Maxwell Mensah from his then-girlfriend, Mzbel.

“Nana Ama’s husband, Maxwell was dating Mzbel and Diamond snatched him. She knew he was rich, and so she did all he could to snatch him. Diamond later introduced him to one of her friends, a well-endowed wealthy woman who also took him away from Diamond not long after they were introduced.

“They exchanged numbers and days later, she discovered her friend started going on dates with Maxwell too,” Naana Brown stated during an exposé spree on social media.

But in response to the above allegations, Diamond Appiah did not rule out the fact that Maxwell proposed to her but she disputed claims that they dated.

She said they were linked through popular highlife musician, Kofi Nti, and met only once at a Chinese restaurant.

“I am not part of the women Maxwell has dated in the industry before marrying McBrown. Kofi Nti and Nana Ofori are witnesses to this. Naana who can you mention as your witness? Even Mzbel is aware that I never dated Maxwell. Maxwell proposed to me alright. He did so through Kofi Nti the musician. He told Kofi Nti that he likes me so he should come introduce me to him and we met only once.

“We went to the Chinese restaurant at Kingsby and that was all. I had not met him since then, after that meeting, I realized he was Mzbel’s ex-boyfriend. So, I even confronted Kofi Nti why he wants to link me with someone who once dated Mzbel. It ended there,” she stated in a viral video.

Diamond added, that Maxwell never called her after the ‘Chinese restaurant date’, instead, he opted for one of her friends.

“Maxwell never called me again until I later heard that he bypassed me to date one of my friends, Abena,” she added.

  • Turkey’s new cabinet reflects the country’s future direction

Turkey’s new cabinet reflects the country’s future direction

The leader of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, chose a new group of people to help him run the country. He hopes this will make Turkey stronger, and that people will listen to him more. Turkey has been around for 100 years, and Erdogan thinks this is a new and exciting time for his country.

The people the president chose for his cabinet suggest that he will go back to usual ways of handling the economy. However, he will keep doing what he has been doing in foreign matters. This is happening as he enters the third decade of being president.

People are excited for Mehmet Simsek to become finance minister again because he did the job before and is well-respected in business circles. He used to work for Erdogan as deputy prime minister.

When Simsek’s predecessor Nureddin Nebati officially handed over his portfolio on Sunday, microphones picked up a sigh of relief from him. That was no surprise given the state of the Turkish economy. Erdogan’s unorthodox economic policies over the past few years have led to a cost-of-living crisis and a plummeting Turkish lira. Efforts to defend the battered currency have resulted in Turkish central bank reserves dropping to record lows. The lira plunged 7% on Wednesday, hitting 22.98 against the US dollar, Reuters reported. That’s what Simsek is up against as he takes office.

“Transparency, consistency, predictability and compliance with international norms will be our basic principles in achieving this goal in the upcoming period,” Simsek said in his first speech since being appointed to the post. “Turkey has no choice but to return to a rational basis. A rule-based, predictable Turkish economy will be the key to achieving the desired prosperity.”

With that message Simsek may be able to convince foreign investors and instill enough hope domestically to keep the G20 economy afloat.

But his real uphill battle might be in convincing Erdogan himself. While Simsek will likely be the chief architect of a new economic policy, the president’s other appointments suggest he may be leveraging different economic visions, according to Mehmet Celik, editorial coordinator at the pro-government Daily Sabah newspaper. Vice President Cevdet Yilmaz is a career bureaucrat and economist, and Trade Minister Omer Bolat comes from a business background. “The picks were strategic so that there will be a new balance,” Celik told CNN.

In the international arena, Turkey has deployed a muscular policy implemented through the foreign and defense ministries along with Turkish intelligence that has expanded its reach regionally and carved out an independent path for the NATO member. In that regard, continuity is likely.

The new foreign minister is a well-known figure to Turks and international players who have negotiated with Turkey of late. Hakan Fidan, who had served as head of Turkish Intelligence Agency (MIT) since 2010, has been in every room and every discussion that has been pivotal to Turkish foreign policy over the last few years. He’s been ever-present but rarely heard – a shadow diplomat in Erdogan’s foreign policy arsenal who has charted rough waters in Syria, Libya and beyond.

Fidan has played a central role in shaping and carrying out foreign policy along with former chief spokesperson and de facto national security adviser Ibrahim Kalin, who has now taken his old job as intelligence chief.

“I will continue to improve our national foreign policy vision, which is based on the sovereign will of our people and independence of our state from all spheres of influence,” Fidan said in his handover ceremony.

Ankara’s foreign policy has put it on a collision course with neighbors, allies and partners including Greece, with which it has tense relations in the eastern Mediterranean, and Western countries, over the perceived threat from Kurdish groups backed by the US in northern Syria.

“There is a willingness from Turkey to put (its) guard down when it comes to the West,” he said. “But when it’s all take and no give from the West, Turkey doesn’t want to settle for that… It will continue to put its foot down and stand against being dictated to,” said Celik.

Those strained relations will not be easy to mend but Fidan has been masterful in his previous role as spymaster in finding ways to negotiate breakthroughs in difficult relations. He has stepped in to mend frayed ties with Gulf Arab states, and has been a driving force behind the slow rapprochement between Damascus and Ankara. The shadow diplomat now enters an era where he is the main voice for Turkey abroad.

All eyes will be on him as he navigates Sweden’s attempt to join NATO. While the US and European NATO members have been in a hurry to admit the Scandinavian country, Turkey has held up membership due to what Ankara says is Sweden’s harboring of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), which is outlawed in Turkey, the EU and the US. Sweden has acknowledged that the group’s activities in the country were “extensive” and “a bigger problem than we realized”.

At the interior ministry, Suleyman Soylu, a self-styled tough guy, is being replaced by career bureaucrat and former governor of Istanbul Ali Yerlikaya. Its portfolio is one of the country’s largest. Yerlikaya’s main areas of focus will be the ongoing response to the earthquake which killed more than 50,000 people in southern Turkey, the 3.5 million Syrian refugees in the country and the continued counter-terrorism efforts against the PKK.

The fight against terrorism, which has broad support across the political spectrum in Turkey, is likely to remain the same but the tone of the ministry is likely to change, according to Celik. Yerlikaya is a softer-spoken politician who has quietly run Istanbul since 2018 and is unlikely to emulate Soylu’s harsh rhetorical style. A shift in tone may serve to bridge some of the social divide that has plagued Turkey in recent years.

The outgoing cabinet members are, however, far from retired. Soylu, former Defense Minister Hulusi Akar and ex-Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu are all lawmakers from Erdogan’s ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party). They’ve just been sworn in for their new terms in parliament, highlighting the party’s tremendous strength there. Their voices will likely echo louder than those of opposition MPs, who now will face an even tougher time convincing voters of their chops in the legislature.

Overall, the new cabinet is a departure from the political appointments that have defined the era in Turkey following the attempted coup in 2015, instead drawing on a strong pool of technocrats.

As Erdogan leads the Turkish republic into its second century, he appears to be employing a back-to-the-basics approach. With social polarization at an all-time high, the economy in crisis and a region that is rife with difficulties, the cabinet has potential to reset some economic missteps of the previous years while holding the line on foreign policy. But a lot will come down to what Erdogan wants, because in Turkey, the buck stops with him.

Rwandan genocide suspect deemed mentally unfit for trial by UN court

A UN war crimes court has determined that 88-year-old Rwandan genocide suspect Félicien Kabuga is no longer capable of “meaningful participation” in his trial.

The court said their judgement was based on information acquired from medical records and those who care for him which suggest “a significant decline in Kabuga’s ability to care for himself.”

“The trial chamber finds Mr Kabuga is no longer capable of meaningful participation in his trial,” the Hague-based International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (IRMCT) said in an order released on Tuesday.

The court suggested that because Kabuga is unlikely to regain fitness, the judges should adopt an “alternative procedure that resembles a trial as closely as possible, but without the possibility of a conviction.”

Kabuga is one of the last fugitives accused of broadcasting hateful propaganda and arming militias in the 1994 genocide in Rwanda.

He was arrested in May 2020 at a modest apartment in Paris where he was living under a pseudonym after 26 years on the run.

He pleaded not guilty at his first tribunal appearance in November 2020.

As president of Radio Television Libre des Mille Collines (RTLM), he had been one of Rwanda’s wealthiest and most influential men among the Hutu elite.

Kabuga’s trial began last September before the IRMCT for what prosecutors say was his “substantial” contributions to the genocide against the Tutsi ethnic group in Rwanda.

Prosecutors say Kabuga’s radio station RTLM broadcast genocidal propaganda and accuse him of arming the ‘Interahamwe’ militia, widely considered to be the main culprits behind the killings.

IRMCT prosecutors say he did not wield a machete or pick up a microphone to broadcast hate but his conduct since 1992 pointed to a consistent anti-Tutsi agenda.

They told judges that an estimated 800,000 people were killed in just 100 days.

“The charges against Kabuga reflect his status as a wealthy and well-connected insider,” prosecutor Rashid S. Rashid said in his opening statement last September.

He said the case reflects Kabuga’s “individual responsibility for serious crimes committed during the 1994 Rwanda genocide.”

  • Ukraine’s dam collapse is an ‘ecological catastrophe

Ukraine’s dam collapse is an ‘ecological catastrophe

The collapse of the Nova Kakhovka dam in southern Ukraine has raised worries of an ecological disaster, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky describing the situation as “an environmental bomb of mass destruction.”

Water levels on Wednesday continued to rise after the Russian-occupied dam and hydro-electric power plant was damaged early Tuesday, forcing more than 1,400 people to evacuate their homes and jeopardising essential water supplies as flooding flooded towns, cities and countryside.

Kyiv and Moscow have swapped accusations over the dam’s collapse, without giving tangible proof that the other is involved. It is not yet apparent if the dam was purposefully assaulted or whether the breach was the result of structural failure.

Zelensky, however, said Russia bears “criminal liability” and Ukrainian prosecutors are investigating the dam incident as a case of “ecocide.”

“The consequences of the tragedy will be clear in a week. When the water goes away, it will become clear what is left and what will happen next,” he said.

Concerns are now turning to the dangers to wildlife, farmlands, settlements and water supplies from the floodwaters and possible contamination from industrial chemicals and oil leaked from the hydropower plant into the Dnipro River.

The head of Ukraine’s main hydropower generating company told CNN the environmental consequences from the breach will be “significant” and damaged equipment at the plant could be leaking oil.

“First of all, the Kakhovka reservoir is likely to be drained to zero, and we understand that the number of fish will gradually go down,” said Ihor Syrota, the CEO of Ukrhydroenergo.

“Four-hundred tons of turbine oil is always there, in the units and in the block transformers that are usually installed on this equipment,” Syrota said. “It all depends on the level of destruction of the units and this equipment… If the damage is extensive, then all the oil will leak out.”

Ukrainian Environment Minister Ruslan Strilets said at least 150 metric tons of oil from the dam have leaked into the Dnipro and the environmental damage had been estimated at 50 million euros ($53.8 million), according to Reuters.

Strilets said downstream wildlife species found nowhere else in the world were in jeopardy, including the sandy blind mole-rat. Ukraine’s Black Sea Biosphere Reserve and two national parks were also likely to be heavily damaged, he added, Reuters reported.

The flooding has already killed 300 animals at the Nova Kakhovka zoo, according to the Ukrainian Defense Ministry.

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres said Tuesday the dam collapse was an “ecological catastrophe” with the destruction of newly planted crops and massive flooding “another devastating consequence of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.”

Before its collapse, the critical Nova Kakhovka dam was the largest reservoir in Ukraine in terms of volume.

It’s the last of the cascade of six Soviet-era dams on the Dnipro River, a major waterway running through southeastern Ukraine, and supplied water for much of southeastern Ukraine and the Crimean peninsula that was annexed by Russia in 2014.

There are multiple towns and cities downstream, including Kherson, a city of some 300,000 people before Moscow’s invasion of its neighbor.

Speaking to the UN Security Council on Tuesday, the UN aid chief Martin Griffiths said its collapse is possibly the “most significant incident of damage to civilian infrastructure” since the start of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The dam, Griffiths said, is a lifeline in the region, being a critical water source for millions of people in Kherson as well as the Dnipro and Zaporizhzhia regions, and a key source of agricultural irrigation in southern Kherson and the Crimean peninsula – impacting farming and food production.

Severe impact is also expected in Russian-occupied areas where humanitarian agencies are still struggling to gain access, he added.

“The damage caused by the dam’s destruction means that life will become intolerably harder for those already suffering from the conflict,” Griffiths said.

Between 35 and 80 settlements were expected to be flooded due to the breach, Zelensky said, and aid efforts are ongoing to get drinking water, hygiene kits and other supplies to affected neighborhoods.

In the low lying districts of Kherson, a CNN team on the ground saw residents evacuated from their homes carrying their possessions and pets in their arms as rising floodwaters penetrated one city block in less than an hour.

As the area is on the front lines of the conflict, the rising water brought with it an added danger of mine and explosive ordnance contamination.

“This is both a water element and a mine hazard, because mines float here and this area is constantly under fire,” said Oleksandr Prokudin, the head of Kherson’s regional military administration, who has been overseeing rescue efforts.

Griffiths said projectiles like mines risk being displaced to areas previously assessed as safe.

Mohammad Heidarzadeh, senior lecturer in the department of architecture and civil engineering at the University of Bath in England, said the Kakhovka reservoir is one of the largest dams in the world in terms of capacity.

“It is obvious that the failure of this dam will definitely have extensive long-term ecological and environmental negative consequences not only for Ukraine but for neighboring countries and regions,” Heidarzadeh told Science Media Centre on Tuesday, adding the facility was an “embankment” dam, which means it was made of gravel and rock with a clay core in the middle.

“These types of dams are extremely vulnerable, and are usually washed away quickly in case of a partial breach… a partial damage is sufficient to cause a complete collapse of the dam because water flow can easily wash away the soil materials of the dam body in just a few hours,” he added.

Both Moscow and Kyiv noted the humanitarian and environmental consequences, while blaming each other for the dam’s destruction.

The Russian-appointed acting governor of Kherson, Vladimir Saldo, said the collapse of the dam led to “a large, but not critical” amount of water flowing down the Dnipro which resulted in the washout of agricultural fields along the coast and disruption of civilian infrastructure.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said Tuesday the dam breach “has caused devastating damage to the farmland in the region and the ecosystem at the mouth of the Dnieper river.”

“The inevitable drop in the water level of the Kakhovka reservoir will affect Crimea’s water supply and will hinder the improvement of agricultural land in the Kherson region,” it said.

Several Ukrainian regions that receive some of their water supply from the reservoir of the Nova Kakhovka dam are making efforts to conserve water.

In the Dnipropetrovsk region, where about 70% of the city of Kryvyi Rih was supplied by the reservoir, Ukrainian authorities have asked people to “stock technical water and drinking water” and businesses to limit consumption and banned the use of hoses.

The reservoir also supplies water to the upstream Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant.

While the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said there was “no immediate nuclear safety risk” at the plant, water from the reservoir is used to cool its reactors and emergency diesel generators.

IAEA chief Rafael Grossi said the UN nuclear watchdog’s staff on site have been told the reservoir is draining at 5 centimeters (2 inches) an hour and it is “estimated” that water used for the mainline of cooling “should last for a few days.”

However, should the reservoir drop below the pumping level there “are a number of alternative sources of water,” Grossi said, with the main one being the “large cooling pond next to the site.”

“It is estimated this pond will be sufficient to provide water for cooling for some months,” he added.0275019147

“My face might be hard but it is nice” – Abiana replies to social media trolls

Abiana, the talented Ghanaian singer, recently shared a painful moment from her past where she recalled a hurtful comment she received from an online troll.

Reflecting on the incident, she shed light on the negative impact such comments can have on individuals in the age of social media.

The popular singer said she has endured countless insults on social media lately, most of which she takes with a pinch of salt, but the most interesting one was directed at her looks.

Earlier, when being placed on the ‘chopping board’ after sacking a TV3 Mentor contestant for non-performance during auditions, Abiana was captured in the social media trends, particularly Twitter, for a while.

Recalling some of the interesting comments she came across during that period during an exclusive interview with GhanaWebTV, she expressed: “I read every single comment. I am telling you that I read every single comment and I can tell who said what. There is one comment, I’ll always remember and that is, Obaa enim denden (a lady with a hard face).

“Sometimes when the insults are harsh, I mostly go and spy their pictures on their profile and reserve my comment. Sometimes I compare their looks to mine, I thank my God because there is a sharp contrast between my looks and theirs. At least my face might be hard but it is nice. I know when someone is making an opinion, it is based on their belief, their upbringing, values and so on.”

Abiana added that although she was excited about being in the trends effortlessly, her family, on the other hand, was hurt.

“The fact that I paid no money to trend and I was trending for over a week excited me. I was okay but my family members were hurt. My parents, siblings and all. My sister in abroad called me and was almost crying. It hurts but how I have been brought up and the things I have gone through has built me up,” she added.

Abiana, who said she now bears the tag of a ‘mean judge’ recalled an instance where a trader from Makola market identified her only by that incident.

“Eii Are you not Abiana? The lady who told the guy out out on TV?” she mimicked the said woman.

Meanwhile, Abiana is currently promoting her new single titled ‘Far Away’, which features Fameye.

  • Ex-Energy Minister labels World Bank country boss as grossly ignorant on PPAs

Ex-Energy Minister labels World Bank country boss as grossly ignorant on PPAs

Former Minister of Power, Dr Kwabena Donkor, described as unfortunate, comments by the World Bank Country Director, which suggest that the erstwhile Mahama administration wasted money by signing burdensome Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) signed almost seven years ago.

“This is a politician who needs friends in the neighbourhood for his political edges ambitions,” said Dr. Donkor, who had hit back at Pierre Frank Laporte for claiming the Mahama government equally contributed to Ghana’s economic woes due to the Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) signed under a take-or-pay agreement committing the country to pay for excess energy it did not need.

“In the case of Ghana, those contracts that have been signed as PPAs are just expensive and the kind of PPAs signed are take or pay. You pay although you do not use it. The fact is that in the past few years, Ghana entered into an agreement at the wrong rate and the wrong price, and it has impacted the debt situation,” Mr. Laporte said.

Dr Donkor initially fired a response saying “I signed the AKSA PPA. It’s a 5 Year Emergency Power Agreement. It has expired. If Nana Addo’s Government negotiates a new PPA (and not under Emergency, how do you blame Mahama? AMERI was a BOOT and the plant is fully owned by Ghana. Sunon Asogli Phases 2 & 3 were just extensions of existing Agreements at a lower price. NPP negotiated and extended the KARPOWER agreement from 10 years to a regular PPA of 20-25 years. How is Mahama to be blamed?

Mr Laporte, who also spoke said funds his outfit gave out to the government of Ghana for the COVID-19 fight essentially rubbished the content of the reports done by the Audit General, Johnson Akuamoah Asiedu, which identified several infractions in how the Akufo-Addo government spent the fund, saying the bank does not feel that the over US$430 million it gave was misused.

According to him, the fund his outfit gave to Ghana was managed by a project team made up of officials of the bank and the government of Ghana and was not included in the budget of Ghana.

Speaking in a TV3 interview, Laporte added that the team managing the funds ensured they were used for their intended purposes and paid directly to contractors.

“We have given $430 million to Ghana for COVID. Our project funds have not gone to the budget of the Ministry of Finance, and because of this, we’ve mechanisms in place that ensure we know each and every dollar that is spent and accounted for and we’ve done audits.

“Of course, there are always a few things here and, procedure-wise, maybe some documentation that needs to be followed.

“But largely speaking, we are very satisfied that all of our resources were spent in line with the procurement requirements that existed. You know, COVID-19 was implemented under emergency procurement measures by the bank,” he said.

The director said that the money given to the government of Ghana is still being used, adding that the bank was working to make more funds available.

School feeding caterers ask govt to take responsibility for programme while demanding arrears

Caterers under the School Feeding Programme are asking government to pay them their arrears in full and take up the feeding of school children themselves as they cite dishonesty on the part of government.

The caterers had proposed a GHC3.50 allocation per meal for school pupils under the school feeding programme.

This comes on the heel of a counter-preposition by government to increase the feeding grant from 98pesewas to GHC1.20p.

Speaking to Starr News, Spokesperson of the National School Feeding Caterers Association, Dorothy Ofori Sarpong argued that the Gender Ministry should review its proposed GHC1.20P as she explains it’s woefully inadequate.

“We are not going to accept it, we’ve asked her[Minister] to go and come back because she said it’s a proposed figure, it’s not a confirmed one so she should go and tell those who helped her to propose that amount that we are not going to accept it.

“We will just ask her to pay all our arrears and then take their job because we cannot cook with GHC1.20P, we can’t. They have refused to even sit down with us and share the difficulties that the women are going through. We are stakeholders, they cannot take decisions and won’t consider us.

“They don’t care about whatever we are going through, whether it is good or bad they don’t care. They only impose what they want us to do on us, which we are not going to swallow anymore.”
