Gang sentenced to prison for selling crooks bogus passports for up to £20,000

A group that provided phoney passports to criminals so they could evade the law has been sentenced to prison.

The scheme’s architect, Anthony Beard, paid gullible individuals for their expiring passports so he could apply for renewals using their information but criminals’ photographs, including murders and drug dealers.

The so-called “golden ticket” of fraudulently acquired real (FOG) passports, which allowed the criminals to flee and begin a new life overseas, cost up to £20,000.

Beard, 61, put his own burner phone numbers on official forms and countersigned some of them himself. He was responsible for more than 100 fraudulent applications.

Evidence of his offending dated back to 2007, but Beard, from Sydenham in south east London, was heard bragging that he had been running the scam for 20 years.

He would find people with similar facial features to his criminal clients and pay them for their expired passports, with other contacts pretending to be professionals to vouch that the photos were genuine.

In 2019 he started working with two other men: Christopher Zietek, a broker who represented a Glaswegian crime gang, and Zietek’s ‘trusted lieutenant’ and ‘dogsbody’ Alan Thompson.

In Thompson’s defence his lawyer, Craig Rush, said he had been forced to retire on medical grounds in 1999 so he became a gofer for Zietek ‘not for money but because it gave him something to do’.

Once the passport scam was uncovered, the fake identities of around 50 fugitives were discovered and they were arrested.

Their trial focused on 12 passports that were obtained for customers including Glasgow murderers Jordan Owen and Christopher Hughes, Liverpool drug trafficker Michael Moogan, Manchester fugitive David Walley and suspected Scottish drug traffickers Barrie Gillespie, Jamie Stevenson and James White.

Beard also obtained fake passports for Stephen Lawrence murder suspect Jamie Acourt, Irish drug kingpin Christy Kinahan Snr and firearms trafficker Richard Burdett, although these were not part of the trial.

Beard admitted conspiracy to pervert the course of justice and conspiracy to make a false instrument with intent, and on Tuesday he was jailed for six years and eight months.

Zietek, 67, who had homes in Sydenham, Ireland and Spain, was jailed for eight years for conspiracy to pervert the course of justice, conspiracy to make a false instrument with intent and converting criminal property.

Thompson, 72 and from Sutton in Surrey, was sentenced to three years for the same offences. Both men were found guilty following a trial in March.

Passing sentence on Tuesday, Deputy Circuit Judge Nicholas Ainley said of the scheme: ‘It was to enable very wicked, sophisticated, violent criminals to escape justice by providing them with documents that because they were genuine would deceive the authorities to enable them to escape.’

He said that Zietek was ‘clearly the organiser’, providing a link to serious criminals, while Beard was ‘the leg man’ and Thompson had a lesser role.

Craig Turner from the National Crime Agency (NCA) added: ‘This was the golden ticket for the organised crime networks in order that they could evade arrest, evade identification by local law enforcement either internationally or at home in the UK.’

The NCA now plans to make an application to recover proceeds of crime from the gang.

A pregnant woman dies in a highway accident

In a car accident on the highway that also injured her son and nephew, a pregnant mother of two who was in serious condition died.

Following the collision on the M66 near Manchester on Saturday afternoon, Frankie Jules-Hough, 38, passed away in a hospital today.

Along with her 4-year-old nephew Tobias Welby, the mother’s children Tommy, 9, and Rocky, 2, also suffered critical injuries.

In hospital intensive care, Tommy and Tobias continue to be in induced comas.

Police arrested 22-year-old Adil Iqbal from Accrington at the scene and he has since been charged with three counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

He appeared at Manchester Magistrates’ Court today where it was confirmed Frankie, who was expecting a baby girl, had tragically passed away.

Iqbal, who works in a boxing gym, spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth and address.

He was remanded into custody to appear at Minshull Street Crown Court on June 19.

Ms Hough’s best friend Debbie Wright has set up a fundraising page to try and help her family cope with ‘the most traumatic incident they have been through’.

She wrote on the page: ‘Life can be turned upside down in the blink of an eye.

‘Frankie who is currently 18 weeks pregnant is in intensive care fighting for her life. Her partner Calvin, is frantically by her side.

‘Tommy and Tobias are in induced comas in intensive care currently awaiting brain scan updates.

‘This is absolutely devastating for the family and their whole world has been truly turned upside down.

‘These next few weeks/months will be critical for the family and is absolutely traumatising for them all.’

Ms Wright says family members of all four are by the side of their loved ones in hospital including Tobias’s parents Becci and Aaron, Tommy’s father, and Ms Hough’s parents Julia and Frank.

  • Norwegian navy officer responsible for oil tank ramming into a ship

Norwegian navy officer responsible for oil tank ramming into a ship

The duty commander of the Norwegian navy was found guilty of negligence after his ship sank less than 10 minutes into his shift after colliding with an oil tanker.

The Hordaland district court sentenced the unnamed officer to 60 days under condition.

On November 8, 2018, the Maltese-flagged vessel Sola TS struck the frigate KNM Helge Ingstad, according to Norwegian news agency NTB. He had been on duty for eight minutes.

Early in the morning, the 137-person crew of the navy ship had to be evacuated after a sizable hole was punched through its side, causing it to begin to sink.

Eight people were slightly injured as the sailors escaped out to the harbour of Sture, off the coast of Bergen in Norway’s south-west.

In a 2019 report, the Norwegian armed forces estimated that a replacement for the warship would cost up to £13 billion Norwegian kroner (£975 million).

The prosecution has claimed negligent navigation was the main reason for the collision.

The officer, the only person to be prosecuted over the incident, denied criminal guilt and argued that while he did not do everything right, he was not solely responsible.

Instead, he said the maritime traffic centre and the crew of the tanker had made mistakes.

His lawyer Christian Lundin told NTB: ‘He is disappointed with the outcome.’

The KNM Helge Ingstad, named after a renowned Norwegian explorer, was raised and scrapped as it was deemed too expensive to fix.

The oil tanker suffered only minor damage, and did not leak.

In February last year, the tanker’s owner Twitt Navigation agreed to pay 235 million kroner (£17.6m) to the Norwegian state in a settlement relating to the collision.

  • Greggs prevails in the fight to stay open late

Greggs prevails in the fight to stay open late

In order to stay open later, Greggs and a London local council have come to an agreement. However, anyone hoping for a warm pastry after midnight may be dissatisfied.

After police voiced fears that a 24-hour operation at the bakery firm’s flagship location in Leicester Square may increase crime and disruption in the neighbourhood, the bakery chain clashed with Westminster Council.

It appears that a compromise has been made because the business, which opened in July of last year, can now continue to serve customers until 2am.

However, the local authority has said only hot drinks will be served past 11pm, and no hot food.

The store will also need to install CCTV, hire door supervisors and clean litter that’s dropped outside.

The issues between the council and the pie-and-pastry giant originated last summer, when Greggs asked for permission to sell its wares at the outlet between 11pm and 5am.

That was refused, but the company later returned with a request to open all hours of the day, with an aim to take on competitors like McDonalds for the hard-earned cash of night shift or emergency service workers.

Aicha Less, the council’s cabinet member for licensing and communities at the time, said: ‘Legitimate concerns have been raised by the police and local people that these plans are half-baked.

‘There are worries that businesses serving 24/7 in the city centre creates challenges and that the bakery could become a hot spot for late night disturbances and anti-social behaviour.’

An appeal hearing beginning today was planned at Westminster Magistrates Court, but has now been cancelled following the agreement.

The flagship store’s licence had only allowed it to sell unheated food after 11pm, and the company chose not to open after that time so customers did not get confused about why they couldn’t pick up their desired treat.

Ms Less, who is now deputy leader of Westminster Council, said: ‘Based on the merits of this case, Westminster have come to an agreement with Greggs that works for everyone.

‘Greggs will now only be able to sell hot drinks (but not hot food) on Sunday to Wednesday from 23:00 hours to 00:00 and, Thursday to Saturday 23:00 hours to 02:00 hours.

‘The licence is also subject to significant conditions which includes the installation of CCTV at the premises, the use of door supervisors and the clearing of litter outside the premises.’

  • Chinese stand-up comic asked to apologise as official get offended by a military joke

Chinese stand-up comic asked to apologise as official get offended by a military joke

A Chinese stand-up comedian has cancelled all of his shows after an official investigation into the agency that represents him and backlash from the government for a joke he made that made a casual reference to the military of the nation.

The uproar highlights the fine line comedians must walk in tightly controlled China, where politics is rarely made light of.

As reported by state-affiliated media Jimu News, Li Haoshi attracted attention from law enforcement after using a word connected to the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) while telling a tale about two stray dogs in a recent comedy show.

He later expressed his “deep remorse and regret” in a social media post on Monday, saying that he had used “an extremely unsuitable analogy to bring bad feeling and association to the audience.”

“I will take all the responsibility and call off all my performances to deeply reflect and reeducate myself,” said the comedian, who goes by the name House and has 136,000 fans on Chinese social media platform Weibo.

The controversy stemmed from his show at the Century Theater in Beijing on Saturday, when he joked about how he had adopted two stray dogs since moving to Shanghai.

He went on to say that one day his two energetic canines gave chase to a squirrel, which reminded him of eight words, before he delivered the controversial punchline, according to audio posted to Chinese social media site Weibo.

“Fine style of work, capable of winning battles,” he said, flipping a well known Chinese Communist Party slogan referring to the PLA.

The phrase was first uttered in 2013 by Chinese leader Xi Jinping, who also chairs the military, when he set out a list of qualities he commanded from the nation’s army. It has since been repeated at various official occasions.

Li’s joke drew a round of laughter at the show, as shown by audio heard by CNN, but also prompted unease from one member of the audience, who Jimu News reported took to Weibo to complain that the joke was inappropriate.

The post set off an intense debate on Weibo over whether Li was being funny or disrespectful, gaining the attention of authorities who seemed unamused.

On Monday Beijing Cultural Law Enforcement Agency launched an investigation into Shanghai Xiaoguo Culture Media, the company that represents Li, state media Beijing Evening News reported.

Shanghai Xiaoguo Culture Media described the joke as “inappropriate” before offering an apology in a statement on Monday.

“We have suspended his work indefinitely,” said the production firm, adding that it would “step up education and training on actors to maintain the order in the industry.”

Without naming the comedian, Communist Party mouthpiece People’s Daily said even comedians should respect limits when it comes to jokes, and it would be a mistake to put humor before all things.

A new genre of talk shows featuring quick-witted stand-up comedians pitting themselves against one another in televised contests have proven to be a big hit among young audiences in China in recent years.

Comedians make a name for themselves by taking part in these shows and often expand their careers to live shows – as Li did.

But performers have to stick to pre-approved scripts – based strictly on non-political topics – making the indirect military reference that landed Li on the wrong side of the authorities this time incredibly rare.

China imposes stringent censorship on issues it deems sensitive from women’s cleavage to criticisms against the Communist Party across all platforms, be it online social media sites or traditional mass media.

That ideological control has tightened under Xi, widely impacting the entertainment industry.

In 2021, China also passed a law banning slander and insults against military personnel.

Last May, former investigative journalist Luo Changping was sentenced to seven months in prison and ordered to offer a public apology for calling Chinese soldiers portrayed in a blockbuster movie about the Korean war “stupid.”

Li’s sense of humor divided users on Chinese social media.

One user on Weibo questioned: “How come the crowd was still laughing?”

Another user on WeChat, an instant messenger app that also allows users to blog, was more understanding.

“This is not a good analogy and it’s not funny. But this actor had no intent to insult the soldiers,” the person wrote.

The contest is over – Mahama declares as he calls for cooperation in NDC

The presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has called for cooperation in the NDC after the party held its much anticipated presidential and parliamentary primaries.

He stated that he has received a call from Dr. Kwabena Duffuor, congratulating on his win.

Sharing this via a tweet, the former president of Ghana said that the former Minister of Finance, together with the former Mayor of Kumasi, Kojo Bonsu, have each called him to celebrate his win with him.

“Both Dr. Kwabena Duffour and Kojo Bonsu have called to congratulate me for my 98.9% victory in Saturday’s presidential primaries.

“The contest is over. Cooperation is what we need to build #TheGhanaWeWant,” he tweeted.

John Mahama received an overwhelming endorsement in the just-ended presidential and parliamentary primaries of the NDC, polling a total of 297,603 votes representing 98.9%.

Ahead of the Saturday, May 13, 2023, elections, Dr. Kwabena Duffuor announced a last-minute withdrawal from the race.

I suffered depression when I was turning 40 – Okyeame Kwame reveals

Okyeame Kwame has revealed that he got depressed when he was about to hit forty (40) years.

According to him, while in situation, he would always want to be alone and would not even pick calls from people.

He told Kwame Dadzie on Joy Prime that he went through the depression when he thought about getting more hit songs and living up to the competition in the music industry.

Okyeame, however, noted that his escape was when he fell in love with nature. He developed an interest for climate change issues, a reason he has been championing a lot of climate change initiatives in recent times.

“When I was turning 40, I became depressed. I didn’t like my life. So I stayed in doors for almost a year. I didn’t release an album, I didn’t pick any calls. I stayed in-doors for almost a year reflecting.

And after I came out of that depression, I realized that most of the things that depressed me (the way the society sees me, where I wanted my music to get to that it wasn’t getting to, the insatiable desire to become number one, the urge that I have to compete) all those are things are things that become a part of consumerism. They are things that will cause one to do things without considering the feeling of others without considering the feelings of the universe,” he said in the interview.

The Climate Clock Ambassador also noted that on his journey to rediscovering himself, he realised that the concept of ‘self’ doesn’t mean ‘him’ as an individual but rather the people around him, the trees and the animals.

Therefore, on this journey to healing from “all the nonsense the society had fed” him, he realised how import it is to preserve the environment.

In tandem with his climate change ideals, he decided to use coconut fibre for the manufacturing of his boxer brand ‘Love Equation.’

He told Kwame Dadzie that they did not use any animal residue for the shorts which, highlighting the fact that they are biodegradable.

Okyeame explained that as a ‘future-preneur’ the use of plant materials to make the boxer shorts portend a time when the use of animal products like wool will be prohibited from being used for clothes and other items.

On August 12, 2021, Okyeame Kwame was made Ghana’s Climate Clock ambassador at a ceremony held at the City Triangle in Accra.

He has also in embarked on a number of environmental preservation campaigns.

Communities near Dorset now resemble a “war zone” after 12 cars torched

Dorset’s peaceful streets now resemble a “war zone” after at least 12 cars were allegedly set ablaze in an arson attack.

The fire-starting rampage, which took place between one and three in the morning on Monday, specifically targeted the communities of Broadstone, Wimbourne, and Merley.

On a motorbike, a gang is thought to have driven from street to street before dousing random vehicles in accelerant. It is also claimed that one property was impacted.

Between 11.30 p.m. and 2.30 a.m., scores of calls from terrified locals flooded the emergency services.

One eye witness, Grant Stewart, described the scene as a ‘warzone’.

‘I was woken up by a bang and thought it was a car crash, looked out the window to see an orange glow and people running around,’ the 33-year-old builder said.

‘I went out to find it was like a warzone with three cars ablaze and bangs going off.’

‘I was woken up by my neighbour ringing my doorbell to tell me my car is on fire,’ the 25-year-old said.

‘It is heart-wrenching to think someone would do such a horrible thing, for no good reason.

‘My car is completely destroyed. The engine is on the floor, I have no front half of my car – there’s just charcoal inside.’

Another witness, Poppy Baker, 57, said the heat from the fires caused the paint on her front door to melt.

Kayleigh Humphries, 33, added: ‘I thought there had been a car accident because I heard a massive bang.

‘When I came outside I saw two cars engulfed in flames and then looked further up the road and saw another two on fire.

‘The night sky was just glowing orange all around. It’s a war zone out there today, there are so many burnt out cars.’

Dorset Police, supported by the Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service, have now launched an investigation to identify who is responsible.

Anyone who has information or saw any suspicious activity is urged to come forward.

Officers are also asking people with home CCTV or a dashcam to check their footage.

The locations with reported incidents are Wentworth Drive, Oakley Hill, Oakley Road, Merley Ways, Stour Walk, New Borough Road, Grove Road and Leigh Road.

Detective Sergeant Simon Austin, of County CID, said: ‘These incidents have affected a large number of victims in the wider Wimborne area and we are aware that this will cause concern.

‘I would like to reassure our local communities that officers are currently investigating all reported incidents and are making every effort to identify those responsible.

‘People will see visible police activity as officers are making house-to-house and CCTV enquiries.’

Additional neighbourhood officers will be patrolling the area and can be approached for advice and support.

  • Ghanaian musicians whose wealth ‘raised eyebrows’

Ghanaian musicians whose wealth ‘raised eyebrows’

Most often, concerts, streams, tours, the sale of merchandise, agreements to serve as brand ambassadors, or side hustles bring in money for musicians.

The display of lavish lifestyles by some artistes in Ghana, just as in other jurisdictions, however, has led people to question their source of wealth.

There has been a barrage of allegations, triggering some of the accused to offer defense while others keep mute for reasons best known to them. Some have argued that they have other businesses aside from music and have invested well enough to reap the benefits.

Let’s take a look at some musicians whose wealth has been questioned

    Chriss Waddle

Over the years, AMG Music boss, Kwaku Adai, popularly known as Criss Waddle, has battled with all forms of wild thoughts pertaining to his source of income.

Noted as one of the richest young men in the Ghanaian entertainment industry, Criss Waddle owns some estates, a construction company, fleets of luxurious cars, a 3-million-dollar worth of mansion, and a record label among others.

However, known publicly as just a musician, many find it hard to believe that he was able to acquire all these properties by just making songs.

Netizens in their quest to sniff around Waddle’s root source of wealth have since tagged him with allegations of money laundering, internet fraud, money rituals, and being married to a gay among others.

In a bid to chide critics at that time, he hinted at the release of an album to address the misconceptions surrounding his wealth.

“Misconception is what is leading the world astray. One man they said he did all these to make money, why? How much he get? Putting your own narrative out there allows the youth to be misguided. A lot will be clarified on this album.” He wrote as a caption to a post announcing his album.

    Medikal

AMG Music signee, Samuel Adu Frimpong, popularly known as Medikal, has for a while now been battling with the tag of being an online scammer over the years.

It all began when the rapper bought a brand-new Range Rover during the COVID-19 lockdown period when the music business was at its lowest. He was questioned by netizens on how he made his money to buy those cars since he wasn’t touring or making major sales as a rapper.

The rapper responded through a series of social media posts about how he made huge sums of money through adverts, endorsement deals, and his vast investments in the real estate business.

    Nhyiraba Kojo

Hiplife musician Rashid Joseph, popularly known as Nhyiraba Kojo, is one of the well-known musicians whose source of income has been questioned over the years.

The musician who just completed another magnificent mansion in Accra has been bombarded with claims of involving in fraudulent means of acquiring money.

It is the case that some of Nhyiraba’s colleagues believe in the assertion, as the likes of Ex-Doe once rejected money from him over the exact claims. Meanwhile, Nhyiraba Kojo has refuted the claims.

    Frank Naro

The popular Kumawood actor cum musician, Frank Naro, has had his source of income questioned in recent times.

The allegations went wild after critics alleged he attempted to sacrifice his colleagues.

But the ‘Koom’ hitmaker has also insisted that he makes money through hard work, struggles, and sweat.

  • I faced peculiar ‘tribal’ situations – Titus Beyuo reveals after NDC primaries

I faced peculiar ‘tribal’ situations – Titus Beyuo reveals after NDC primaries

NDC Parliamentary Candidate, Lambussie Constituency, Dr. Titus Beyuo, says while he did not face detractors working against him from within the party, the tribal card was played against him.

He noted that his tribe and origin as well as some fabrications were being turned into weapons to undermine his bid to lead the NDC in the Lambussie constituency.

According to him, what worked in his favour were his youthfulness and his message which resonated with the youth who went on to champion his cause.

Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express, he said, “I faced peculiar situations in my area because there were tribal issues where people wanted to play the tribal card and therefore they assassinate your character.

“And Evans, if there’s a lesson I’ve learnt, I just told my colleagues my next medical lecture I’ll tell my medical students instead of doing a DNA test, if you really want to know your parents, your paternity or stuff, just pick up a political party card and attempt to contest for a position and your history will be traced to you, both the truth and the lies.

“You know people fabricated all sort of things against me that were not real, but the critical thing is to focus. Do you have message to deliver? Yes. What was our message? Advocacy is lacking, I am coming from a district that is very deprived, that is not getting its share of the national cake, and what is needed there is a strong leader, one with a capacity to do proper representation, one with the capacity to advocate for development in the area. And I think my constituents bought this over tribal sentiments.”

He said it was about time people looked beyond tribal sentiments and other related factors and instead focused on the competencies and message of those seeking to lead them in politics.

According to Dr. Beyuo, his constituents analysed his message and capabilities and deemed his more resonant with their needs thus his victory.

“If there is a lesson I’ve learnt from this, it is that politicians must begin to realise as His Excellency John Dramani Mahama stated, the delegates are the kingmakers, and they appreciate  and know what is good, and they know what they want.

“The era where you just attack someone’s character and their personality and use that to get votes is long past. They’re sifting between the messages they receive, they ananlyse it, you see people who are not educated to a very high level but they understand the issues more than one would expect  and that is what I encountered here,” he said.

Despite stereotypes that reggae music is for ‘wee smokers’, multi-award-winning musician Kofi Kinaata has defended the genre.

In an interview with Amansan Krakye on Property FM in Cape Coast, the ‘Effiakuma Love’ hitmaker said some of the gospel songs done in Ghana are equally carved in reggae beats.

Speaking on the issue which he finds unfair, the highlife singer said, “Recording a reggae song doesn’t mean I have done a song for wee smokers because there are a lot of gospel songs which are also reggae.

“In Ghana, most of our gospel songs are reggae just that we don’t listen to them carefully and reggae isn’t about behavior but it’s a music genre. So if my reggae song which is Effiakuma Love currently trending was done specifically for wee smokers I don’t think it spoils anything at all.”

Throwing more light on the ‘wee tag’, Kinaata said the herbs used to manufacture the drug was created by God.

“Even if my reggae song was done for wee smokers I believe that wee was also created by God and wee smokers are also human beings,” he added.

Finland prime minister and husband file for divorce

Sanna Marin, the prime minister of Finland, and her husband, Markus Räikkönen, have decided to end their 19-year marriage. Marin made the announcement on Instagram on Wednesday.

“We have jointly filed for divorce. We are appreciative of our beautiful daughter and our 19 years of marriage, Marin said in an Instagram story.

“We are still inseparable, respectful of one another, and devoted parents. We will continue to spend time with each other and as a family, she continued.

Marin and Räikkönen, a businessman and former professional footballer, were married in 2020, according to Finland’s public broadcaster, YLE.

The announcement comes after Marin lost Finland’s parliamentary election in April, with opposition right-wing National Coalition Party (NCP) claiming victory in a tightly fought contest.

She is currently serving as caretaker prime minister until a new coalition government can be formed.

Though considered a millennial role model for progressive new leaders by fans around the globe, at home she has faced criticism for her partying and her government’s high public expenditure.

While she remains very popular among many Finns, particularly young moderates, she antagonized some conservatives with high levels of spending on pensions and education.

Marin’s rise to the top of Finnish politics was meteoric.

The first member of her family to attend university, she entered politics at 20 and quickly moved up the ranks of the center-left Social Democratic Party.

She then became the world’s youngest prime minister when she took office in 2019 at the age 34.

  • Muntaka tasks Mahama to address internal issues in NDC ahead of election 2024

Muntaka tasks Mahama to address internal issues in NDC ahead of election 2024

The Member of Parliament of Asawase, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak has reiterated the significance of uniting the rank and file of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) after the just-ended primaries.

The lawmaker believes many contenders, especially, incumbent legistors are aggrieved by how some executives allegedly connived to get them voted out.

In view of that, he has called on the newly elected flagbearer of the party, John Mahama to hit the ground running in addressing these concerns.

Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express on Monday, Mr Mubarak said this resolution phase will be a contributory factor of the party’s victory in the 2024 election.

“He [John Mahama] must meet all 137 sitting MPs not in large groups but in smaller numbers to listen to people. There is some disease we need to cure, I am of strong belief that if that disease is not cured it could cause problems for us.

“There are a lot of people that have dipped their noses and fingers into constituencies and His Excellency must hear people’s verdicts and complaints,” he said.

Mr Mubarak said after this series of engagements, Mr Mahama should relegate individuals who will be fingered for conniving to vote out MPs.

According to him, it will be the surest way to eradicate resentment and bring about unity.

“So that after talking to these 137 MPs and you get a clear indication that specific individuals’ names have been mentioned on several occasions, this campaign for 2024 election, let them take a back seat. Don’t let them lead any campaign because if they do, the antagonism will continue and one thing about politics is that People don’t forgive.

“They may keep quiet but they are looking for an opportunity to strike because they believe that even in these times of difficulty, see what they’re doing, then if we get the power they may do worse because at that time they may have political authority,” he explained.

Kofi Mole explains his absence from the VGMA23

Ghanaian hip hop and afro beats singer Kofi Mole’ has disclosed the reasons he didn’t get nominations in the 24th edition of the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMAs).

He stated that he was dealing with a lot of issues last year that affected his output.

“Last year I was dealing with a lot of stuff that is personal and the family so last year I couldn’t drop more music like the previous years. Last year wasn’t a year that I dropped more songs and to get VGMA nomination you have to put out a lot of music before you make an entry.

Speaking on Property FM in Cape Coast with Amansan Krakye, the Hip Hop artiste said missing out on this year’s VGMA isn’t a big deal adding that he has won an award from the scheme before.

“I have been at the VGMAs before, I have won an award and I have had that experience so it’s not a big deal for me but the sole point is to do music for my fans to be motivated to be able to vibe with me.

“So missing out on the VGMA nominations for this year isn’t a big deal for me at all,” Kofi Mole asserted.

He, however, promised to feed fans with back-to-back tunes this year.

“This is the year that Kofi Mole wants to drop more music which I have said on most platforms and it will keep on coming so it’s not a big deal for me,” he opined.

  • Complex limb malformation surgery successfully conducted by KATH surgeons

A Senior Specialist in Trauma and Orthopaedics, Dr. Dominic Konadu-Yeboah, has led a diverse team of surgeons, anesthesiologists, pediatricians, and nurses in a six-hour operation.

This was to repair a complex congenital limb malformation, known in medicine as polymelia, on a five-month-old baby at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).

The baby was delivered at a district hospital through caesarean section and was, subsequently, referred to KATH four hours after birth.

In addition to the polymelia, the baby also had abnormal positioning of the right kidney, anorectal malformation, a genital fistula and an eye visual problem.

Polymelia is the presence of supernumerary (extra) limbs attached to a segment of the body. It is a rare limb malformation that occurs in about 6 per 10,000 live births.

A few cases have been reported to occur in the lower limbs. Polymelia has a heterogenous pathogenesis including incomplete separation of identical twins in the womb during baby formation. It is called pyromelia when the extra limbs are attached to the pelvis.

Commenting on this rare feat by the team, Dr Konadu-Yeboah said there were extensive discussions and education on the condition of the baby with the parents prior to the surgery. Psychological counselling, including the procedure, outcomes and possible complications, was also provided to the family by a team of experts.

He said after five months of intensive preparations and pre-operative investigations, including Computer Tomography (C.T.), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (M.R.I.), echo and ultrasound scans to look for other possible associated abnormalities, the complex surgical repair operation finally came off on the 20th February 20, 2023, and lasted close to six hours.

    Dr. Dominic Konadu-Yeboah

“The immediate and intermediate postoperative periods have all been well managed without any complications and the baby is recovering steadily as expected. There are other minor procedures and surgical interventions that will be done to completely restore normal functioning to the baby”, he stated

Dr Konadu-Yeboah explained that in the past, such babies were either abandoned or left to die by their families.

He said, with the current medical expertise available in the country and at KATH in particular, such babies will have a chance to live a normal life if they are promptly referred for specialist interventions.

The parents of the baby are also satisfied with the outcome so far and have been full of praise for the team of surgeons and all other members of staff who contributed to the successful surgery of their baby.

The multi-disciplinary team of trauma and orthopaedic surgeons, paediatric surgeons, anaesthesiologists, paediatricians, nurses and other specialists included doctor Obiageli Joan Ofungwu, Johnny Sobotie, Kwasi Twumasi-Baah Jnr. and Samuel Twene Boadi. Others were Drs. Ebenezer Akomea-Agyin, Anthony Davor, George Osei Prempeh, Sophia Ankrah, Yaw Asiedu Basoah, Abigail Opoku, Gabriel Asante, Robert Sagoe, Boateng Nimako and Prof. Paul Poku Sampene Ossei.

The rest were Drs. Seth Agyemang, Solomon Djangmah, Lynda Akalazu Ogechi, Zulfawu Ibrahim, Helena Okrah and Michael Amoah, all of KATH.

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the hospital, Prof. Otchere Addai-Mensah, has commended Dr Konadu-Yeboah and the team for successfully undertaking such a complex surgery.

He said the feat represented what teamwork was capable of achieving.

He, therefore, urged the various clinical directorates and units to continue to share and combine their expertise in order to deliver world-class solutions to the complex and growing health needs of patients at the hospital.

US citizen allegedly perished in combat in Bakhmut – Wagner chief says in a video

In a video broadcast on the Wagner Telegram group on Tuesday, Yevgeny Prigozhin, the head of the Russian private military organisation Wagner, claimed a US citizen had killed in the troubled Ukrainian city of Bakhmut.

“We are advancing to the advanced positions of the PMC Wagner in the western regions of Artyomovsk,” Alexander Simonov, a pro-Kremlin military blogger, says in the video’s introduction. Artyomovsk is the Russian name for Bakhmut.

The video was captured at night and features what appears to be a mortar bombardment. “Get in the shelter,” the soldiers yell. attacks with mortars coming from the west.

Prigozhin is shown inspecting a body, and what he claims are US identification documents.

CNN cannot verify the authenticity of the documents and cannot confirm the nationality of the body shown in the video. CNN is not naming the deceased pending confirmation of his identity.

Prigozhin says, “So we will hand him over to the United States of America, we’ll put him in a coffin, cover him with the American flag with respect because he did not die in his bed as a grandpa but he died at war and most likely a worthy [death], right?”

A soldier claims that the man was returning fire when he died. Prigozhin replies, “He was shooting back; he died in the battle, so we will hand over his documents tomorrow morning and pack everything, right?”

Prigozhin and Wagner group frequently post videos for propaganda purposes, and often mix real footage with propaganda claims. CNN has reached out to the US State Department for comment.

FLASHBACK: Consistency and determination is all one needs to succeed– Mona 4Reall

During an interview with Zionfelix on January 27, 2022, Ghanaian singer and socialite Mona4reall stated consistency and determination is all one needs to succeed.

According to her, her extravagant lifestyle should serve as inspiration rather than arousing envy in others.

She said individuals who yearn for her kind of lifestyle or view her dealings with a negative mindset will end up bringing unnecessary pressure on themselves.

“I always say this, ‘You are the one giving yourself the pressure’. Honestly, if you look at my things, you look at what I do, what I post, and you view it with a negative mind. There’s where the jealousy comes in. I should rather inspire you. I don’t feel I am putting pressure on anybody. I should rather inspire them. If I can make it, you can make it as well.

“I have people I look up to. And when I see the things the post, I’ll be like, wow, Charley, I want to be like this. So it really depends on how you decide to view it. Don’t give yourself pressure. Pray to God to bless you so that you can also be wealthy. That’s all.”

Ghanaian singer Mona4reall, previously known as Hajia4Real, says her flamboyant lifestyle should inspire others to yearn for more instead of turning them green with envy. And she pts all responsibility for the latter on people who bring this pressure on themselves.

Mona4reall had a lot to say to ZionFelix as they discussed her socialite lifestyle and how she maintains it. According to Mona4real, she is a hardworking woman who thrives to be better each day.

“I always say this, ‘You are the one giving yourself the pressure’. Honestly, if you look at my things, you look at what I do, what I post, and you view it with a negative mind.

“There’s where the jealousy comes in. I should rather inspire you. I don’t feel I am putting pressure on anybody. I should rather inspire them. If I can make it, you can make it as well.

Hajia4reall also disclosed her principles to success. She believes that hard work, consistency and determination is all one needs to succeed. Not forgetting… the God factor.

“I am a very hardworking person. I am very consistent. If I put my mind to doing something, I make sure I do it. I just don’t talk. I do more action. So if you want to do something, put your mind into it and work. You reap what you sow. It’s just that.”

Asantehene holds talks with British Museum on Ashanti regalia repatriation

Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has engaged the British Museum regarding regalia seized from the Ashanti kingdom following the Battle of Amoaful in 1874.

As part of his working visit to London, he also requested areas of contemporary cultural cooperation in the management and technical assistance with the Manhyia Palace Museum.

The Museum Director, the German art historian, Dr Hartwig Fischer, the Deputy Director; Dr Jonathan Williams and the Head of the Africa Department and Curator, Sam Nixon and Julie Hudson welcomed the Asantehene who later explained that the Manhyia Museum which is undergoing major restructuring and expansion is a living one and profit-making.

It needed, like all major museums, other collections to occasionally strengthen patronage and growth.

This he said, was notwithstanding the laws of antiquity in Britain even as long-time negotiations continued.

Dr Fischer who led the BM team in discussions described the visit as an august one and would work towards the Asantehene’s wishes through the structured laws.

A previous MOU would be reviewed on time for the loaning of items for the Asantehene’s silver jubilee in Kumasi next year.

Otumfuo with technical advisors-Ivor Agyeman-Duah and Malcolm McLeod

The Museum also agreed to study and work on a technical framework by two of the Asantehene’s advisors: the former Keeper of Ethnography at the BM and previous Professor of History and Vice Principal of the University of Glasgow, Malcolm McLeod.

He had in 1994 led the establishment of the Manhyia Palace Museum. The co-technician of the framework is historian, museum economist and development specialist, Ivor Agyeman-Duah.

The technical discussions which started this week in London would also lead to visitations to the Manhyia Palace Museum, object identification at the Museum for loan agreements and other legal implications as the British Museum Act does not allow permanent removal of items from its collection.

The BM led by Dr Fischer would also be involved in the Manhyia Palace Museum reopening and anniversary.

The Asantehene was given a private tour of the current exhibition, Luxury and Power- Persia to Greece which centres on the Greco-Persian Wars.

On behalf of the Palace, the Daily Graphic has also confirmed that Mr Agyeman-Duah continued discussions with the Director of the world’s leading art and design institution, the Victoria and Albert Museum’s (V&A), Dr Tristram Hunt in London.

A bilateral agreement with the Palace would be signed before February 2024.

The V&A which has a collection of Asante regalia is developing a programme concept for next February which would mark the 150th year of the 1874 War. A group of Ghanaian and British artists would jointly be engaged in a memorial in London.

Next year also marks the 100th anniversary of the return of exile from Seychelles of Asantehene Nana Agyeman Prempeh I after twenty-seven years.

In 1976, the late Asantehene Otumfuo Opoku Ware II on the centenary of 1874 made a request (return of regalia) to the Director of the BM Sir John Pope-Hennessy who together with the Trustees later organized the major exhibition, Asante Kingdom of Gold which was opened by Opoku Ware II and the Duke of Gloucester which also travelled to the Natural History Museum in New York.

The BM as part of the cooperation with Manhyia at the time, trained museum managers in Kumasi and Ghana which has today led to the major BM International programme in Africa.

The UAE has invited Syrian President Assad to the COP28 climate summit

Bashar al-Assad of Syria has been invited by the United Arab Emirates to the COP28 Climate Summit, which will start on November 30 in Dubai.

Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, president of the UAE and ruler of Abu Dhabi, had extended an offer to Assad to attend COP28, according to a tweet from the UAE embassy in Damascus on Sunday.

On Monday, the invitation was also verified by SANA, Syria’s official news agency.

It might lead to diplomatic issues for nations that continue to put sanctions on Assad’s regime. If Assad attends, it will be his first major meeting since the deadly civil war in Syria began in 2011.

The UN climate summit has already attracted controversy for appointing as its president Sultan Al Jaber, the CEO of the state-owned Abu Dhabi National Oil Company, one of the world’s biggest oil and gas producers.

A COP28 spokesperson told Reuters in a statement this week: “COP28 is committed to an inclusive COP process that produces transformational solutions. This can only happen if we have everyone in the room.”

In March, Assad visited the UAE on an official invitation for the first time since the Syrian civil war began. It was also his first visit to an Arab state since 2011.

Earlier this month, Arab nations agreed to re-admit Syria into the Arab League despite repeated objections from the United States to ending the more than decade-long isolation of a regime that it holds accountable for the deaths of more than 300,000 civilians and displacement of millions in the country’s civil war.

Joyce Blessing’s husband flaunts new woman

In the midst of his divorce from the gospel singer, Dave Joy, Joyce Blessing’s husband, and former manager, has flaunted an unnamed woman on social media.

Prior to this development, social media witnessed Joyce Blessing and her husband’s messy split which was characterized by a series of back and forth, drama, attacks, and so on, from both camps.

Their issue which started in 2020 was triggered by accusations of infidelity from both sides.

The ‘straw that broke the Carmel’s back’ was the results from a supposed DNA test that proved that two of Joyce Blessing’s kids were not his.

After the heated altercations, Joyce Blessing and her husband went silent until this new twist from Dave Joy shook fans.

In a video spotted on his Instagram page, Dave Joy was captured cruising in a vehicle with an unknown lady.

He edited the lady’s face out of the video to prevent fans from identifying or perhaps, investigating her.

Dave Joy shared the video with the caption, “My king of Queens. #savethedate #viralvideos#marriage.”

The said video has since stirred interesting comments from some individuals, while others have also congratulated him.

    Background

In 2020, it was reported that Joyce Blessing’s marriage was on the verge of collapse. This was after several allegations of infidelity hit both parties. Reports suggested that a DNA report conducted without Joyce Blessing’s consent revealed that two of the three children were not Dave Joy’s.

In June 2022, whiles still battling with their marriage on social media, a video of an intoxicated Joyce Blessing professing love to a man was leaked.

Management of the gospel artiste said the video was old and was intended for her husband.

Dave Joy at that time rebutted saying the video was meant for another man. He mentioned that Joyce Blessing in the said video mentioned ‘Kwame’ as the recipient but he [Dave Joy] is Kwabena Adu Gyamfi.

He said: “I am not Kwame. Joyce, you didn’t make the video for me. You sent it to Kwame. You know the Kwame that you made the video for. This issue is old. I wouldn’t have spoken about it, but you accused me of being the recipient of the video. So, I want to absolve myself.”

This was contained in a letter signed by Kojo Bonsu.

In the statement, he said that despite the circumstances that came up before the primaries and the outcome, it is time for the party to focus on winning the 2024 general election.

“Regardless of the circumstances surrounding the electioneering process and the outcome of the election itself, we must not all join the rescue mission of liberating our mother Ghana from the modern-day imperialism and colonialism practiced in a benevolent democracy under this NPP government,” the statement said.

It added that winning the 2024 election is the ultimate prize of the party, and that calls for a relentless effort from party members.

Five things to know about the arrest, indictment of Mona4Reall

On May 15, 2023, the US Department of Justice (DoJ) indicted Ghanaian socialite Mona Faiz Montrage, also known as Mona4Reall, on charges related to fraud.

The announcement followed months of speculations about her supposed arrest by authorities in the United Kingdom.

GhanaWeb highlights five facts about Mona’s arrest and her unsealed indictment charges as contained in the DoJ’s release below:

    Arrest and extradition

According to the DoJ, Mona was arrested in the United Kingdom on November 10, 2022, in connection with a series of romance schemes and money laundering between 2013 and 2019.

“Montrage was arrested in the United Kingdom on November 10, 2022, and was extradited from the United Kingdom on May 12, 2023,” the DoJ stated in the release posted on its website on Monday.

    Details of offense and indictment

As contained in the unsealed indictment charges of jury, Mona is facing six counts: one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, one count of wire fraud, one count of money laundering conspiracy, and one count of money laundering. She is also charged with one count of receipt of stolen money and one count of conspiracy to receive stolen money.

A US Attorney for the Southern District of New York, Damien Wililiams is quoted as saying that Hajia4Reall and the members of a criminal enterprise based in West Africa targeted older Americans through romance and ended up receiving over $2million through the activities of the enterprise.

“We alleged today that Ms. Montrage participated in multiple romance scams – often targeting elderly victims – resulting in more than $2 million in fraudulent funds under her control. Romance scams – especially those that target older individuals – are of major concern. The FBI will be tireless in our efforts to hold fraudsters accountable in the criminal justice system,” Damien Williams is quoted by the DoJ.

    Alleged tricks

The unsealed indictment said Hajia4Reall in pursuit of her alleged scam activities committed offenses including opening multiple bank accounts in the US for the receipt of payments from her victims.

“On or about September 15, 2016, Mona Faiz Montrage, the defendant opened a business bank account in the name of 4Reall Desigsn in the Bronx. New York (“Account-1”).

“On or about November 1, 2018, Montrage received into Account-1 two check deposits from a romance scam victim (“Victim-2”) totalling at least approximately $195,000,” the Grand Jury indictment said.

    Trial

Mona4Reall following her extradition to the US was expected to be put before US District Court Judge Paul A. Crotty on Monday, May 15, 2023.

    Possible jail term

She faces up to 75 years jail term if she’s found guilty of all the charges leveled against her in the fraud.

The sentence duration of 95 years is subject to her receiving the maximum sentence for each of the six charges she is facing.

More often than not, sentences are handed down to run concurrently which means she could get a maximum of 20 years in jail.

  • FBI criticized for probing into potential election involving Trump and Russia

FBI criticized for probing into potential election involving Trump and Russia

An FBI investigation into potential collaboration between Donald Trump’s team and Russia in the 2016 presidential election has been criticised by a US special counsel.

The FBI allegedly ‘discounted or wilfully ignored relevant facts that did not support the narrative of a collusive relationship between Trump and Russia’, according to Special Counsel John Durham’s 306-page final report, which was made public on Monday.

Durham came to the conclusion that the FBI never ought to have opened a thorough inquiry into potential connections between the Trump campaign and Russian election meddling.

The FBI used ‘raw, unanalyzed, and uncorroborated intelligence‘ in launching the probe known as Crossfire Hurricane, according to the report. It had a ‘lack of analytical rigor’ in examining leads on Trump’s links to Russia.

‘An objective and honest assessment of these strands of information should have caused the F.B.I. to question not only the predication for Crossfire Hurricane, but also to reflect on whether the F.B.I. was being manipulated for political or other purposes,’ wrote Durham.

    ‘Unfortunately, it did not.’

Additionally, the report accused the FBI of using a different standard in considering allegations of election interference surrounding the campaign of Trump’s opponent Hillary Clinton.

The report did not provide major revelations about the probe.

Trump ripped former FBI Director James Comey and Democrats for the investigation into alleged collusion between his campaign and Russia.

‘I, and much more importantly, then American public have been victims of this long-running and treasonous charade started by the Democrats – started by Comey,’ Trump told Fox News Digital. ‘There must be a heavy price to pay for putting our country through this.’

Trump said the report took a long time to be released publicly ‘because John Durham is a very thorough investigator’.

‘But the result is unequivocal and an absolute disaster in terms of justice,’ said Trump, adding that the ‘national security implications of what they did are very grave’.

‘It turned out to be a giant and very dangerous hoax,’ Trump said.

Durham did not call for any ‘wholesale changes’ to the FBI’s guidelines for inquiries into politically sensitive matters.

  • Missing girl discovered dead with a murdered British teenager in Thailand

Missing girl discovered dead with a murdered British teenager in Thailand

Police have discovered the body of a missing 15-year-old girl who was last seen riding a motorbike with a slain British adolescent.

A shallow tomb containing Suraphltchaya Khamsa was found in a wooded area today about three kilometres from where Woramet Ben Taota, 16, was found on May 7.

Chaiwat ‘Wat’ Boongarin, a convicted felon, has acknowledged to killing the youngster known as Ben while denying killing Suraphltchaya. He did so by stating the boy had stolen drugs from him.

Boongarin, who is in custody, is likely to face the death penalty if convicted of either or both cases.

Ben grew up in a remote village in northern Thailand near Lampang – close to where his body was found -with his Thai mother Ooy Taota. But he has a British father, businessman Stephen Graham, who shares his time between the UK and Thailand, reports the Daily Mail.

The devastated family say Ben and Suraphltchaya have known each other since they were young and ‘were close’ and that police believe Suraphltchaya was dating Boongarin. They suspect Ben got involved with Boongarin and his drugs through her.

They think the girl, who was said to be addicted to methamphetamine pills and getting her supply from the thug, had been used to help lure Ben to Boongarin before they were both killed.

Police have today found the dead body of the missing girlfriend of a British teenager who was murdered in northern Thailand - with the alleged killer facing the death penalty over the double murder. Officers discovered Suraphltchaya Khamsa, 16, buried in a shallow grave in woodland around three miles from where Woramet Ben Taota, 16, (PICTURED) was discovered on May 7. Her parents and grandparents identified her body at the scene from the braces on her teeth and the jewelry she had been wearing. They broke down in tears when it emerged that their daughter had been murdered.??????Police are now continuing to interrogate sex crimes convict Chaiwat Boongarin, 44, who allegedly admitted killing Ben but denies murdering Suraphltchaya, whose nickname was Ping Pong. He is likely to face the death penalty if convicted of either or both cases. ???PACKAGE: Video, pictures, text

Suraphltchaya’s parents and grandparents identified her body, breaking down in tears when it emerged she’d also been murdered.

Police said she had signs of bruising on her face that suggested she’d been hit a number of times with a hard object.

Speaking about the suspected killer, Mr Graham said he was a prolific drug dealer and an ‘evil’ man.

The boy’s father flew out to Thailand when the tragedy unfolded and on Wednesday confronted Boongarin during a chaotic crime reconstruction.

Mr Campbell yelled ‘look me in the eye, you cowards’ and ‘may you rot in hell’ at the alleged murderer while he was being taken on a ‘perp walk’ or crime reconstruction, which will form evidence for the prosecution.

He told the Mail: ‘Usually I am very English and reserved about my emotions and my anger.

‘But after spending that long flight from the UK thinking about my beloved Ben I was just grabbed by the throat by the situation. I used some terrible words. It just flowed out of me.’

He described his son as polite, charming and handsome, but naive and ‘like all 16-year-olds’ did stupid things and tragically got himself involved with Boongarin.

Through tears, Ben’s mother Ms Taota said her son as her heart and soul.

Suraphltchaya and Ben were last seen together riding a motorcycle on Saturday evening, May 6, after visiting her grandfather earlier in the afternoon.

Ben was found dead the next morning with severe head wounds. His body had been dumped in woodland but had not been buried. His phone and cash from his wallet were missing.

A police search for Suraphltchaya followed as investigators battled to piece together the case.

Boongarin was arrested after being identified from CCTV riding a black Honda motorcycle around the area at the time of the death.

He confessed to the killing and said his motive was revenge for a drug deal in which the youngster had stolen tablets. He said, however, someone else killed Suraphltchaya.

Police major general Mongkol Sampawapol, commander of Lampang Provincial Police, said: ‘We suspect that the suspect is responsible for both murders.

‘However, police will also continue investigating the deaths to check if anybody else was involved.

‘The female victim’s body is now being sent to hospital for an autopsy to find traces of rape or sexual assault, because the suspect has a history of these crimes.’

  • Airplane’s landing gear completely snaps off during an emergency landing

Airplane’s landing gear completely snaps off during an emergency landing

An airplane’s landing gear completely detached during an emergency landing.

The landing gear failed to retract shortly after takeoff, forcing the captain of a Boeing 747 bound for Chicago O’Hare Airport in the USA to abort the flight.

The airline, Cargolux, acknowledged that last evening there was a “significant landing incident” involving one of their aircraft.

Terrifying footage filmed by onlookers shows the aircraft coming in to land at Luxembourg Airport after it safely dumped fuel and turned back.

As the plane touches down with its rear wheels, it starts to disappear out of the shot momentarily.

But then a shocked woman behind the camera can be heard saying: ‘Woah, woah, woah, s***!’

Just out of shot, the right-hand landing gear had completely snapped off from the underside of the aircraft.

When the camera pans further left, the entire landing gear can be seen dramatically flying through the air and bouncing along the runway.

Huge puffs of dust and smoke kick up from the tarmac before the landing gear comes to a standstill on the ground.

A fire service truck immediately rushes towards the damaged plane to help.

Pictures taken afterwards show significant damage to the fuselage with crumpled bodywork and a gaping hole in the plane.

The wheels of the landing gear were torn off and entirely separated from the plane.

A Cargolux spokesman said: ‘Cargolux would like to confirm that one of its aircraft, B747-400F bearing registration mark LX-OCV, suffered a significant landing incident at Luxembourg airport on Sunday evening at 18:52.

‘The aircraft was unable to retract its landing gear on take-off from Luxembourg.

‘As a result, it was forced to safely dump fuel in order to return to land at the airport.

‘On its landing roll its right body landing gear detached from the aircraft.’

Fortunately no one was hurt in the incident and Cargolux say the plane managed to come to a ‘controlled stop’ before emergency services attended the scene.

The spokesman added: ‘No persons on board nor on the ground suffered any injuries.

‘The relevant authorities have been informed of the incident.

‘The aircraft remains on the runway and recovery efforts are underway.’

Last month, a plane carrying the Arsenal women’s football team burst into flames on the runway as it was taking off.

  • Several missile and drone attacks shook Kyiv hours after Zelensky’s visit to UK

Several missile and drone attacks shook Kyiv hours after Zelensky’s visit to UK

Russia has launched numerous airstrikes against the Ukrainian capital over the course of the last 24 hours.

Hours after president Volodymyr Zelensky‘s trip to the UK, missiles and drones poured down on Kyiv.

One official described the attack as being “exceptional in density” and said at least three persons were hurt.

As Putin unleashed the ferocious aerial assault employing a combination of drones, cruise missiles, and perhaps ballistic missiles, loud explosions could be heard above the city.

Serhii Popko, the head of the Kyiv military administration, said it was the ‘maximum number of attacking missiles in the shortest period of time’.

Debris fell across several districts in the capital.

Videos on social media showed air defence systems shooting down missiles overhead.

In the Solomyansky district, the debris caused a fire in a non-residential building, which was later put out.

Debris set cars on fire and fell on the grounds of a zoo, but no losses were reported, said Kyiv mayor, Vitali Klitschko.

Mr Popko was unable to provide an exact number of how many missiles the Ukrainian air defence managed to bring down.

He said: ‘According to preliminary information, the vast majority of enemy targets in the airspace of Kyiv were detected and destroyed.’

It’s the eighth time this month Russian air raids have targeted the capital in a clear escalation after a quieter few weeks ahead of a much-anticipated Ukrainian counter-offensive.

  • At least 10 people have died and 11 missing after a hostel fire in New Zealand

At least 10 people have died and 11 missing after a hostel fire in New Zealand

In a fire outbreak at a hostel in New Zealand, 10 people have perished, and 11 more are still missing, making it likely that more have perished.

At around 12.30am local time, flames engulfed the four-story hostel in Wellington.

Six deaths have been officially confirmed, according to Prime Minister Chris Hipkins, and it’s likely that there are still others.

Bruce Stubbs, incident commander for the fire service, said: ‘There is a significant amount of debris from the roof collapse but at this stage we have located six people.’

Emergency services were called to the Loafers Lodge hostel, and Wellington Fire and Emergency district manager Nick Pyatt said 52 people have been accounted for, but that a number still remained missing.

He said: ‘I can sadly report that this will be a multi-fatality incident.

‘Our thoughts at this time are with the families of those who have perished and with our crews who valiantly rescued those (they could) and attempted to rescue those that they couldn’t.’

‘This is our worst nightmare,’ Mr Pyatt said. ‘It doesn’t get worse than this.’

Police said the cause of the fire remained unexplained, and they would be investigating alongside fire and emergency officials.

Loafers Lodge resident Tala Sili told news outlet Radio New Zealand (RNZ) that he saw smoke pouring through under his door and opened it to find the hallway pitch black.

He said: ‘I was on the top floor and I couldn’t go through the hallway because there was just too much smoke, so I jumped out the window.’

He said he then fell onto a roof two floors below.

He added: ‘It was just scary, it was really scary, but I knew I had to jump out the window or just burn inside the building.’

Mr Sili said he was rescued from the roof by paramedics and treated for a sprained ankle.

Police said the cause of the fire remained unexplained, and they would be investigating alongside fire and emergency officials.

Wellington City Council spokesman Richard MacLean said it was helping about 50 people who had escaped the fire and were now at an emergency centre the council set up at a local running track that had showers and other facilities.

He said there were a number of elderly people it was helping who had escaped with only the pyjamas they were wearing.

‘A lot are clearly shaken and bewildered about what happened,’ he said.

Loafers Lodge advertises itself as an affordable place for people to stay while they are in the capital, whether on business or needing to visit the nearby Wellington Hospital.

It has 92 rooms and promotes them as being available long term.

A multitude of party executives, delegates, members, and supporters, alongside friends and family, gathered at the Auditorium to witness Mahama deliver his acceptance speech.

Before taking the podium, Mahama enthralled the audience with his astonishing dance moves, clad in a white smock and brandishing a horse tail.

Amid thunderous cheers and applause, Mahama moved his body to the resounding beats emanating from traditional drums bouncing off the walls of the auditorium.

He was enveloped by a traditional dance group as he danced his heart away, eventually taking his seat where his wife, Lordina Mahama, awaited him, beaming with pride.

The spectacle didn’t end there. Following in Mahama’s footsteps, was his running mate for the 2020 general elections, Prof Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, who also gracefully displayed her own captivating dance moves flanged also by the dancers.

During his acceptance speech, Mahama expressed gratitude to the NDC delegates and supporters for their unwavering confidence and trust.

He outlined his vision for Ghana’s development and made a promise to deliver a brighter future for all Ghanaians if elected as president once again.

His next challenge lies ahead as he prepares to face the New Patriotic Party (NPP), the main rival party, who are yet to hold their primaries and select a formidable candidate for the upcoming 2024 general elections.

Notably, Mahama boasts an impressive background as a communication expert, historian, writer, and former member of parliament and minister of communication. He is also the first vice president to assume the presidency following the sudden demise of his predecessor, John Evans Atta Mills, in 2012.

Additionally, he is the first Ghanaian head of state to be born after the country’s independence in 1957.

What US gov’t said about Mona 4Real’s romance scheme

Ghanaian Influencer, Mona Faiz Montrage, popularly known as Mona 4Real or Hajia 4Real, has been charged for her role in a romance scheme.

This is after Damian Williams, the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, and Michael J. Driscoll, the Assistant Director in Charge of the New York Field Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (“FBI”), announced the unsealing of a six-count Indictment charging MONA FAIZ MONTRAGE for her role in a series of romance schemes and for laundering the proceeds of those schemes.  MONTRAGE was arrested in the United Kingdom on November 10, 2022, and was extradited from the United Kingdom on May 12, 2023.  MONTRAGE will be presented before U.S. District Judge Paul A. Crotty, to whom the case is assigned, later today.

According to reports she received over $2 million in fraud proceeds and pretended to marry one victim to further the fraud scheme

U.S. Attorney Damian Williams said: “As alleged, Mona Faiz Montrage was a member of a criminal conspiracy that specifically targeted older Americans through romance scams.  These scams can be both financially and emotionally devastating for vulnerable victims.  Thanks to the efforts of our law enforcement partners, Montrage was arrested abroad and has been brought to the United States to face justice.”

FBI Assistant Director in Charge Michael J. Driscoll said: “We alleged today that Ms. Montrage participated in multiple romance scams – often targeting elderly victims – resulting in more than $2 million in fraudulent funds under her control.  Romance scams – especially those that target older individuals – are of major concern.  The FBI will be tireless in our efforts to hold fraudsters accountable in the criminal justice system.”

As alleged in the Indictment and other publicly filed materials:[1]

From at least in or about 2013 through in or about 2019, MONTRAGE was a member of a criminal enterprise (the “Enterprise”) based in West Africa that committed a series of frauds against individuals and businesses in the United States, including romance scams.

Many of the Enterprise’s romance scam victims were vulnerable, older men and women who lived alone.  The Enterprise frequently conducted the romance scams by sending the victims emails, text messages, and social media messages that deceived the victims into believing that they were in romantic relationships with a person who had, in fact, a fake identity assumed by members of the Enterprise.  Once members of the Enterprise had successfully convinced victims that they were in a romantic relationship and had gained their trust, they convinced the victims, under false pretenses, to transfer money to bank accounts the victims believed were controlled by their romantic interests, when, in fact, the bank accounts were controlled by members of the Enterprise.

MONTRAGE is a Ghanaian public figure who rose to fame as an influencer through her Instagram profile, under the username “Hajia4Reall,” which at one point had approximately 3.4 million Instagram followers and was among the top 10 profiles with the most followers in Ghana.

MONTRAGE received money from several victims of romance frauds whom members of the Enterprise tricked into sending money.  Among the false pretenses used to induce victims to send money to MONTRAGE were (i) payments to transport gold to the United States from overseas; (ii) payments to resolve a fake FBI unemployment investigation; and (iii) payments to assist a fake United States army officer in receiving funds from Afghanistan.

As to one victim, MONTRAGE used her real name and spoke to the victim several times by phone.  MONTRAGE sent the victim a tribal marriage certificate purporting to show that MONTRAGE and the victim had been married in Ghana.  The victim sent MONTRAGE approximately 82 wire transfers totaling approximately $89,000 to purportedly help with costs associated with MONTRAGE’s father’s farm in Ghana.

In total, MONTRAGE controlled bank accounts that received over $2 million in fraudulent funds from the Enterprise.

‘Don’t fight for movie roles’ – Fred Amugi

Veteran Ghanaian actor, Fred Nii Amugi has advised actors and actresses not to fight over roles in movies because it does not bring the best in them.

According to him, before a director assigns a particular role to an actor he (the director) measures the strength, hence fighting for a change in role isn’t the best.

“Don’t fight for roles. Whatever the role a director gives you, do it to perfection because the director knows you can perform”, Mr. Fred Amugi said in an interview on Movement TV.

Mr. Fred Nii Amugi also urged actors and actresses also cautioned actors over such acts adding that it does not bring out the best in them.

He added it is better for an actor to appear in one scene in a movie and perform it well than to be in an entire film without having an impact.

“It is better than roaming in a movie without doing anything relevant. You do it, convince the director for the next movie or for a future role”, he advised.

Earlier, a video in which Black Sherif was seen addressing persons creating tension between him and Sarkodie has since gone viral online amidst massive reaction from netizens.

The 2023 VGMA ‘Artiste of the Year’ tackled claims that Sarkodie’s Jamz album wouldn’t have attained a successful feat without his famous ‘Country Side’ collaboration with the rapper.

“If I had not been on the album, it still would have been what it is supposed to be. Albums and music are spiritual. I don’t know his destiny. If I were not on the album, it would have still taken the path it’s supposed to take.

“Sarkodie was doing these years before me, who am I to tell him that his album wouldn’t have been big without me? I have been doing music for only four years, subtract it from the number of years he has been doing music and see what he has been able to do. It doesn’t make sense,” he stated on United Showbiz.

“Whether they are proud or not, I’ve smoked. My father knows it’s my past,” said Osikani who disclosed he “learnt how to smoke when I came to the streets.”
“I started smoking about 7 years ago. I can’t say whether smoking is good or bad.”

The musician mentioned that he struggled to quit smoking cannabis but has eventually been able to quit. “It was difficult to quit but now, I don’t smoke. I’ve not smoked for the past five days. At first, I couldn’t go a day without smoking so I can say I’ve stopped.”

Born Hansford Brefo, Oseikrom Sikanii who is the first of three siblings, said he is from a wealthy family. His father, according to him, left Ghana for Germany when he [Sikani] was a year old.

He stated that his name ‘Sikanii’ which is translated to the English language as ‘wealthy man’ is not a facade because his parents are wealthy and he is equally a wealthy man.

“I can’t count the number of houses my father has. Where I reside now is one of the numerous houses my father has and it’s a nine-bedroom edifice. I have luxurious cars as well,” Sikanii argued.

NDC Primaries: ‘You’ve chosen experience over experiment – Mahama thanks delegates

Former President and flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has expressed profound gratitude to delegates of the party for voting “massively” for him in the just-ended primaries.

During his acceptance speech delivered at the University of Development Studies (UDS), in Tamale on May 15, 2023, he said his victory is an indication that delegates chose experience over experiment.

“Thank you for your votes of confidence and for your unshaken conviction that I am the most suitable person with the experience and vision to lead our party the NDC to victory in 2024.

“You have chosen experience with vision over experiment and I’m confident that in December 2024 , Ghanaians will make that choice that puts us back on the path of building the Ghana we want together,” he said.

Mr Dramani Mahama on Sunday, May 14, 2024, was declared flagbearer of the NDC after the party held its much anticipated presidential and parliamentary primaries across the country.

He contested with former Mayor of Kumasi, Mr Kojo Bonsu after two other contenders, Dr Kwabena Duffuor and Ernest Kwaku Kobeah pulled out of the race.

At the end of the elections, Mr Mahama had garnered 98.9% of the total votes while Kojo Bonsu won only 1.1% of the votes.

While thanking party members for their overwhelming support during the primaries, the leader of the party pledged to lead the NDC to “a resounding victory come December 2024,” and further entreated party members to continue to support him until victory is attained.

“To you the kingmakers of the NDC, I say thank you for electing me with a resounding 297, 306 which constitutes 98.9% of the total valid votes cast. This margin of victory is deafening and resounding and emphatic, and it is indicative of the unwavering singular intent of the NDC to win the 2024 elections.

He further preached unity among party members, entreating them to work together for the good of the party and the country in general.

“From today, right here, in the hall of the UDS, I declare that the internal competition for the flagbearership position is over. We must win the [2024] election to enable us to build the Ghana we want together.”

In order to achieve victory, he said the party needs to “flip the coin from competition to cooperation.”

“We need cooperation to build a better Ghana. I am, therefore, calling for cooperation among all elected candidates and aspirants, he said.

I almost didn’t pull through with Beyonce’s feature – Shatta Wale

In 2019, Shatta Wale became the first Ghanaian artist to collaborate with American music superstar Beyoncé Knowles-Carter on a song for her album “The Lion King,” marking a significant milestone in his career.

The collaboration did the magic for Shatta Wale, however, this was not without stress.

The Dancehall music has opened up about how a Ghanaian who was coordinating things between himself and Beyonce’s team complicated the process when in the natural sense, could have been made easier.

“When Beyonce wanted to feature me, I swear to God I didn’t want to continue the process again. Do you know why? The Ghanaian that followed and was coordinating for that thing went all wrong about the situation.

“It was this and that…I told him to shut up, don’t tell me that, don’t shout that. He was like, she said she will come next week, we have to shoot the video now. You see all those things, it doesn’t move me,” Shatta disclosed in his Twitter Space on May 14.

Despite the challenges, Shatta pulled through to record the monster hit ‘Already’ and shoot the music video with Beyoncé which later became a favourite of many.

“I did it because I love the fans, that is why I stressed myself. Beyonce and her team actually wanted me to fly with my crew like the way I travel with 16, 12 people but our Ghanaians with their pressure forced me. Now I want to feature Beyonce and I am getting problems. Now the same Ghanaian person can’t even get that feature,” he expressed his disappointment on Sunday during an interaction with his fans.

Shatta Wale has hinted at producing a second album, KONEKT which will purely be made for Afrobeat lovers just months after the release of his ‘MAALI’ album.

I’m nowhere close to Sarkodie – Black Sherif

Black Sherif has urged Ghanaians to refrain from making unnecessary comparisons between him and his senior colleague, Sarkodie.

He made this comment while reacting to claims that Sarkodie’s Jamz album wouldn’t have attained a successful feat without his famous ‘Country Side’ collaboration with the rapper.

‘Country Side’, one of the singles off Sarkodie’s ‘Jamz’ album, has been touted as its only successful track.

It has been tagged as the most popular song on the album, considering the traction it has since received from fans and Black Sherif’s influence.

But reacting to such claims during a discussion on United Showbiz, Black Sherif said,

“If I had not been on the album, it still would have been what it is supposed to be. Albums and music are spiritual. I don’t know his destiny. If I were not on the album, it would have still taken the path it was supposed to take.

Sarkodie was doing these years before me, who am I to tell him that his album wouldn’t have been big without me? I have been doing music for only four years, subtract it from the number of years he has been doing music and see what he has been able to do. It doesn’t make sense,” he stated.

He, however, bemoaned the current trend of creating unhealthy competition, and enmity between artistes on social media just for trends.

“People sit on the internet, buy data and pursue a certain agenda just for trends. That’s what is done these days. In the real world, there is love between us. Lots of love. But some people on social media chose to put enmity between us and it’s really bad.”

Scores of celebrities have since commended him for what they described as a mature and wise way of addressing the issue.

British visitor talks about surviving a horrific capsize on a vacation yacht

A British visitor claims that the first time he realised his vacation dive boat had overturned was when he saw fish rather than the sky outside his window.

David Taylor was on board the Carlton Queen three weeks ago when it began to sink and begin to float away, along with other eager divers exploring the Red Sea.

Since then, a video showing panicked passengers scrambling up a nearly vertical deck, leaping over the side of the boat into the ocean, and clinging to their mattresses as they floated on the water’s surface has appeared online.

David, 53, told the Daily Telegraph: ‘I knew something was wrong when I could see fish swimming outside my cabin room’s window.’

The architectural technician from Nottinghamshire was one of 15 Brits on the ill-fated boat, among a total of 26 guests.

Remarkably, everyone on board survived the ordeal – including the nine crew members – with none requiring hospital treatment, according to reports.

David said: ‘We were shouting for help and heard crashing above us and had this deep-seated feeling of dread that something terrible was happening.

‘When we realised we couldn’t escape by the stairwell and no one had come to help us, it felt awful.’

The descriptions of the incident offered by some of the passengers who were on board the craft clashes with the interpretation offered by its owner, Carlton Fleet.

A GoFundMe page created by German survivor Dominic Schmitt says six of the divers were trapped inside the sinking boat for almost half an hour.

He wrote: ‘Our passports, given to the captain at the beginning of the voyage to evacuate with him in an emergency, were of course nowhere to be found.

‘They are somewhere in the Red Sea…if one day you come across a dolphin with a UK passport, you know where he got it.’

Speaking about ‘the company’, he added: ‘Instead of sending doctors they send lawyers, instead of providing help, they tried to spread fear among us and instead of taking responsibility for what had happened, they did not even show up to a meeting in which they initially told us to provide a compensation offer.’

However, Carlton Fleet told Scuba Diver magazine they had covered medical expenses and accommodation and had offered to pay more for the inconvenience.

A statement said: ‘Unfortunately, the company’s offer fell on deaf ears, and certain guests engaged in negotiation tactics and resorted to threats to strong-arm the Carlton Fleet into paying them larger amounts, notwithstanding their signature of releases and liability waivers, and the charterer’s clear instructions that they procure insurance for loss or damage to equipment and belongings prior to boarding the boat.’

  • Pope Francis meets President Zelensky for the first time during war

Pope Francis meets President Zelensky for the first time during war

Pope Francis is meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Rome.

It comes after Francis claimed that the Vatican was engaged in a covert effort to resolve the conflict.

Upon his arrival in Italy, where he also had meetings with Premier Giorgia Meloni and President Sergio Mattarella, Mr. Zelensky tweeted: “An important visit for approaching victory of Ukraine!”

The pair promised full military and financial backing for Ukraine and reiterated the country’s support for its EU membership bid.

Zelensky flew to Rome on an Italian government plane that was escorted over Italian airspace by fighter jets. He was due to be received in Berlin on Sunday.

His meeting with the pope is the most significant part of his visit.

Mr Zelensky previously met Francis at the Vatican in 2020 and the two have had several phone conversations since the war began.

At the start of the war, the pope tried to take a balanced approach in hopes of being a mediator but later began forcefully condemning Russia’s actions, comparing them to some of the worst crimes against Ukraine during the Soviet era.

Returning from a trip to Hungary on April 30, Francis made an intriguing but puzzling comment about the Vatican being involved in a mission to try to end the war.

‘There is a mission in course now but it is not yet public. When it is public, I will reveal it,’ he told reporters during the papal flight home.

Francis has pleaded for peace practically on a weekly basis, and has repeatedly expressed a wish to act as a broker between Kyiv and Moscow.

His offer has so far failed to produce any breakthrough.

The pope has a standing invitation from Mr Zelensky to visit Kyiv but has said previously that he also wants to visit Moscow as part of the same peace mission.

Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal met the pope at the Vatican on April 27 and said he had discussed a ‘peace formula’ put forward by Mr Zelensky.

The president and his team have been vigorously promoting Kyiv’s 10-point peace plan and urging world leaders to hold a Global Peace Summit based on the proposals.

It calls for restoring Ukraine’s territorial integrity, the withdrawal of Russian troops and cessation of hostilities, and the restoration of Ukraine’s state borders.

Mr Zelensky has repeatedly said the plan is not open to negotiations.

The pope has said the Vatican is willing to do ‘all that is humanly possible’ to help the repatriation of Ukrainian children.

Kyiv estimates nearly 19,500 children have been taken to Russia or Russian-occupied Crimea since February 2022, in what it condemns as illegal deportations.

I originated the genre “Afro-Dancehall” a decade ago – Stonebwoy

Stonebwoy takes pride in being the pioneer of the Afro-dancehall genre, which has provided a nurturing environment for numerous emerging artists.

The award-winning singer, who has earned the title of one of the country’s greatest exports, is fulfilled to have witnessed the growth and widespread use of Afro-Dancehall tunes.

“It is literally broken down as Afrobeat and dancehall. It is very simple in that context. I am only very confident enough to have coined this name more than a decade ago and I have been living up to it till today.

“I believe that it is a very beautiful space to be in. It will interest you to know that there are tons of African youths who are into the Afro-dancehall style and paying a lot of respect to the name, Stonebwoy for being a fierce force and pushing this to the world,” the dancehall musician elaborated in an interview on +44 Podcast with Sideman & Zeze Millz in May 2023.

Stonebwoy paid tribute to the founding founders and big names who created the dancehall genre and saw it grow.

Afro-Dancehall was birth when young Stonebwoy received a calling back in 2007. It took careful deliberation and hard work to come out with the perfect name that suits this kind of music which combines African sounds and dancehall.

“My history with Afro-dancehall is that I should be, you know what they say that an idea is not in one man’s head…it will interest you to know that I have been pushing Afro-dancehall as a coin as a term from early when I started my career before I launched properly. It was the calling I had…I sat and wonder what I was going to call it and as far as 2007 and 2008, I have been about it,” he said.

The hitmaker has been making waves following the release of his 17-track album titled ‘5th Dimension’ in April 2023.

Stonebwoy was adjudged the Best Reggae/Dancehall Artiste at the 24th edition of the Vodafone Ghana Music (VGMA).

Yul Edochie’s daughter removes father’s surname from her socials

Amidst the ongoing family saga, Danielle Edochie, the eldest child and sole daughter of renowned actor Yul Edochie, has made an unconventional move on her social media platform.

She has removed her father’s surname from her names on social media.

It will be recalled that Yul Edochie’s second wife, Judy Austin, had come under heavy backlash after her Thanksgiving video went viral.

In the said video, Judy was praising God for the birth of her child weeks after her co-wife, May lost her first son.

Nigerians had since berated Judy Austin for what they described as being insensitive considering that the Edochie family recently lost their first son.

Netizens also showed their dissatisfaction with Yul Edochie for sharing the thanksgiving video of his second wife barely two months after the death of their son.

Amid the online drama, a glance at Yul’s daughter, Danielle’s Instagram bio shows that it has been edited and her father’s name yanked off.

The Edochie family name could no longer be spotted on the Instagram bio.

Rather, the names ‘DIANA DANIELLE DUBEM’, boldly stood on the page.

Investigation team launched over the death of British serviceman in Sweden

A British serviceman was discovered dead in Sweden just a few days after a military drill.

According to the Swedish newspaper Expressen, the unidentified 25-year-old went aboard HMS Albion during the Aurora 23 defence exercise between April 17 and May 11.

He spent the evening with another Royal Navy sailor in a residence in Solna, northwest of Stockholm, where he was subsequently discovered dead.

Swedish police have arrested four people in connection with the death, including the serviceman he was out with.

Three Swedes in their 20s and 30s were also detained.

Police are still in the early stages of their investigation and have not revealed how the man died.

The Ministry of Defence said: ‘We are aware of an incident in Stockholm and we are assisting local authorities in their investigation. It would be inappropriate to comment further.’

The Swedish Armed Forces said the Aurora 23 exercise was the largest national exercise of its kind in more than 30 years, involving troops from 15 countries.

Both the RAF and the British Army were involved in the drills.

Its purpose was to increase the ability to deal with an attack on Sweden, which has been heightened since Russia invaded Ukraine last year.

Before the HMS Albion set sail for the exercise, Captain Marcus Hember, Commanding Officer of the ship, said: ‘Albion and the Littoral Response Group’s last period of operations took us north to Arctic Norway, where we participated in a significant Joint Expeditionary Force exercise.

‘Our next period of operations is going to take us to the Baltic, where again we’ll be exercising with allies and partners and demonstrating the UK and the Royal Navy’s commitment to Northern European security.

‘Albion has embarked marines and a wide range of equipment from 45 Commando as well as from across the UK Commando Forces enterprise.

‘We’re looking forward to getting back out there and showing our commitment to security at this difficult time.’

  • Senior physicians vote to decide whether to strike over salary

Senior physicians vote to decide whether to strike over salary

Today is the first day of voting for senior NHS physicians in England to decide whether to strike for wages.

According to Dr. Vishal Sharma, chair of the BMA consultants committee, discussions with the government have been made in an effort to resolve the protracted disagreement, but little progress has been made.

Speaking on behalf of consultants, he stated, “We have seen a decline in our take-home pay of 35% since 2008/9 and this is even before the impact of this year’s soaring inflation has been considered.”

This has led to consultants working effectively four months of the year for no pay

‘Even as late as this weekend, we remained hopeful that we would secure a pay offer that went some way toward making up for the decline we have seen.’

But, he said, with inflation remaining in ‘double digits’ the final offer from the government still represented a pay cut in real-terms.

Dr Sharma added: ‘On the back of 15 years of our pay declining, we simply could not accept a deal that continued this downward trend and have been left with no option but to proceed today with the ballot for industrial action.’

He said consultants did not want to take industrial action, adding: ‘Ultimately the government made a political choice to cut our pay again this year and unless we can secure a commitment that the government will take the necessary steps to restore our pay over the long term, we simply cannot accept an offer that sees our pay fall even further.’

Dr Sharma has previously said the ‘NHS is on its knees’ and ‘senior doctors are cutting their hours or leaving the NHS in droves, driven out of jobs they love by unfair pension tax rules and brutal cuts to their pay’.

The ballot is open from Monday until June 27 and the BMA is urging members to vote yes.

The vote follows a series of strikes over pay this year by NHS ambulance staff, nurses and junior doctors.
