Prince William kisses his father during coronation

During the coronation, Prince William swore allegiance to his father and gave him a gentle kiss on the cheek.

The Prince of Wales was the sole heir to defy convention and swear loyalty to the King during the historic ceremony.

Following the coronation of the new king or queen, the heir apparent went to his father and pledged his allegiance, saying: “I, William, Prince of Wales, pledge my loyalty to you and will bear unto you faith and truth, as your liege man of life and limb.” God, please help me.

Following the pledge, William touched his father’s crown and bent down to kiss him on the cheek, appearing to avoid making eye contact while doing so.

Charles then cracked a brief smile and was seen mouthing: ‘Thank you, William,’ to his son, who will one day be the King of the United Kingdom himself.

The oath of allegiance pledged by the heir to the King was given on behalf of all members of the Royal family.

Elsewhere during the ceremony, William helped to clothe his father with the Stole Royal, a golden priestly scarf.

Charles was also presented and clothed with the Robe Royal, a long cloak.

Upon receiving, the Archbishop said: ‘Receive this Robe. May the Lord clothe you with the robe of righteousness, and with the garments of salvation.

Meanwhile, Prince Harry sat in the third row in the Abbey to watch the coronation take place, along with more junior royals.

He attended the occasion alone, while the Duchess of Sussex and their two children remained at their home in California.

  • President Biden invites AI executives to White House over safety concerns

President Biden invites AI executives to White House over safety concerns

On Thursday, President Joe Biden met with the CEOs of some of the largest AI firms, including Microsoft and Alphabet’s Google, and emphasised the need for them to make sure their technologies are secure before they are used.

The term “generative artificial intelligence” has gained popularity this year as a result of the enormous public interest in apps like ChatGPT, which has prompted businesses to introduce similar products in the hopes that they will alter the nature of work.

Millions of users have begun testing such tools, which supporters say can make medical diagnoses, write screenplays, create legal briefs and debug software, leading to growing concern about how the technology could lead to privacy violations, skew employment decisions, and power scams and misinformation campaigns.

Mr Biden, who has used ChatGPT and experimented with it, told the officials they must mitigate the current and potential risks AI poses to individuals, society and national security, the White House said.

The meeting included a ‘frank and constructive discussion’ on the need for companies to be more transparent with policymakers about their AI systems, the importance of evaluating the safety of such products, and the need to protect them from malicious attacks, the White House added.

Thursday’s two-hour meeting which began included Google’s Sundar Pichai, Microsoft Corp’s Satya Nadella, OpenAI’s Sam Altman and Anthropic’s Dario Amodei. Vice president Kamala Harris and national security adviser Jake Sullivan were also present.

Ms Harris said in a statement that the technology has the potential to improve lives but could pose safety, privacy and civil rights concerns. She told the chief executives they have a ‘legal responsibility’ to ensure the safety of their artificial intelligence products, and that the administration is open to advancing new regulations and supporting new legislation on artificial intelligence.

In response to a question about whether companies are on the same page on regulations, Altman told reporters after the meeting ‘we’re surprisingly on the same page on what needs to happen’.

The administration also announced a $140million investment from the National Science Foundation to launch seven new AI research institutes, and said the White House’s office of management and budget would release policy guidance on the use of AI by the federal government.

Leading AI developers, including Anthropic, Google, Hugging Face, NVIDIA Corp, OpenAI, and Stability AI, will participate in a public evaluation of their AI systems.

Shortly after Biden announced his reelection bid, the Republican National Committee produced a video featuring a dystopian future during a second Biden term, which was built entirely with AI imagery.

Such political ads are expected to become more common as AI technology proliferates.

US regulators have fallen short of the tough approach European governments have taken on tech regulation and in crafting strong rules on deepfakes and misinformation.

‘We don’t see this as a race,’ a senior administration official said, adding that the administration is working closely with the US-EU trade and technology council on the issue.

Zelensky alleges 6,000 war crimes against Russia in just April

Volodymyr Zelensky, the president of Ukraine, has called on Russia to account for tens of thousands of “crimes of aggression.”

The International Criminal Court (ICC), which has issued an arrest order for Russian President Vladimir Putin, received an unexpected visit from the leader of Ukraine.

President Zelensky said in a speech that Russia committed 6,139 war crimes in April alone, killing 207 civilians in Ukraine, including 11 children.

He also called for the creation of a war crimes tribunal that could see Putin himself forced to explain atrocities carried out at the hands of the Kremlin.

‘We all want to see a different Vladimir here in the Hague, the one who deserves to be sanctioned for his criminal actions here, in the capital of international law’, President Zelensky continued.

He added that war would eventually be won by ‘force of arms’ and thanked the Netherlands for weapons supplied to Ukraine so far.

In his speech, President Zelensky also paid tribute to the victims of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17, shot down in Russian forces in 2014.

There had been 196 Dutch nationals on the flight.

He gave a speech titled ‘No Peace Without Justice for Ukraine’ (Picture: Reuters)

A minute of silence was then held for all those who have died as a result of Russian ‘terror’.

Dressed in his standard khaki-coloured jumper, President Zelensky said: ‘We cannot stop wars of aggression, but can defeat aggression as a criminal idea that originates in the mindset of someone who is used to impunity.

‘If you look at any war of aggression, they all have one thing in common – the perpetrator of the war did not believe they would have to stand to answer for what they did.’

His visit to The Hague, which hosts the ICC and the United Nations’ top judicial organ, the International Court of Justice, came a day after he denied that Ukrainian forces were responsible for what the Kremlin called an attempt to assassinate Putin in a drone attack.

On a visit to Helsinki on Wednesday, Zelensky told reporters: ‘We didn’t attack Putin. We leave it to (the) tribunal.’

While the leader’s visit to the ICC was not officially confirmed, the court’s staff on Thursday raised a Ukrainian flag next to its own flag outside the building.

Judges announced last month announced they found ‘reasonable grounds to believe’ that Putin and his commissioner for children’s rights were responsible for the unlawful deportation and unlawful transfer of children from occupied areas of Ukraine to Russia.

Prosecutor Karim Khan has made repeated visits to Ukraine and is setting up an office in Kyiv to facilitate his ongoing investigations in the country.

The Netherlands has been a strong supporter of the Ukrainian war effort since Russia’s invasion last year.

Among military equipment Prime Minister Mark Rutte’s government has promised are 14 modern Leopard 2 tanks it is buying together with Denmark.

They are expected to be delivered next year.

Among other military hardware, it also sent two Patriot air defense missile systems and promised two naval minehunter ships as well as sending military forensic experts to assist war crime investigations.

  • Blame govt for continuos drop in press freedom – MFWA

Blame govt for continuos drop in press freedom – MFWA

Executive Director of the Media Foundation for West Africa, Sulemana Braimah says the government is to be blamed for the country’s continuous drop in press freedom.

According to him, the government has failed to heed calls by stakeholders on the need to improve media freedom in the country.

“The problem is because we have a government that seems to be living in some self-denial, you present the fact and it is denied and one can make mention of a number of instances.

“So we kept warning, ringing the alarm bells that, look press freedom conditions are getting worse and this was way back in 2019 that we need to begin to do something about our press freedom conditions,” he said on Saturday.

Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile, he explained that the government had further worsened the conditions of the press by reducing its rights and freedoms to a debate.

“We were repeatedly told that is not the case, to a point where the president himself now decided to reduce the whole issue to a debate about whether or not journalists can criticise.

“He says we are crying over press freedom because ‘journalists do not want to be criticised when they are criticised, they term that an attack.’

“So it got to the point where you have party officials, political appointees referencing that statement and saying ‘journalists, they think they cannot be criticised, when you criticise them, they say you are attacking them,” he said.

Recounting an occurrence, he said, “In early 2020, …the Bobie Ansah and a few others had happened and again we started ringing the alarm bell. We had one of the presidential advisors on media, Madam Elizabeth Ohene, actually writing a piece literally attacking the MFWA accusing us of being biased against the government.”

He continued; “The problem really is about a government that is not prepared to accept the fact and then we deal with it.”

A ranking by Reporters Without Borders concludes that Ghana has dropped from 60th in 2021 to 62nd globally, and 10th in Africa.

This is Ghana’s lowest-ever ranking in almost two decades after it ranked 66th and 67th in 2005 and 2002 respectively.

The latest report is out of 180 countries assessed with Ghana recording a decline in its indicative points from 78.67 percent to 67.43 compared to last year.

Also recently, the US Department of State released its 2021 annual Country Reports on Human Rights Practices which reports on key human rights issues in various countries across the world including Ghana.

The report cited Ghana for a number of human rights abuses including clamping down on free speech.

  • A pro-Putin writer killed in a car bombing

A pro-Putin writer killed in a car bombing

A car bombing that killed a driver, injured a well-known author of Russian nationalist

The explosion of Zakhar Prilepin’s Audi SUV this morning in Nizhny Novgorod, approximately 250 miles east of Moscow, injured the 47-year-old author of six books who fiercely supported Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Images of the battle veteran’s truck overturned on a track by a forest and with a crater next to it have been made public by the state investigating committee, which looks into major crimes.

A man, 30, was detained on suspicion of involvement in the explosion around two hours after the blast, the Russian state-owned news agency Tass reported.

Citing a law enforcement source, Tass reported that the suspect was a ‘native of Ukraine’ with a past conviction for robbery with violence.

Ministry of Internal Affairs spokeswoman Irina Volk said the authorities are treating the incident as a terrorist attack under Article 205 of the Criminal Code and have launched a criminal probe.

Prilepin, the co-chair of a nationalistic party, was taken to hospital and, following an operation, has been put into a drug-induced sleep, REN-TV, a Russian government-subsidised channel, reported.

The blogger, popular on Russian social media, had been reportedly travelling back to Moscow from Donetsk and Luhansk when he made a food pitstop at Pionersky.

REN-TV said the blast had been caused by a tank mine buried in the road. The investigative committee said a team of forensic experts are combing the scene.

A witness who pulled the writer out of the car told the channel: ‘The car just turned over, it flew up. There were two of them (inside the car).

‘It all happened before our eyes. The driver was dead, and they pulled him out, and half the car was gone.’

Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Telegram, without providing any evidence: ‘Washington and Nato have nursed yet another international terrorist cell – the Kyiv regime.

‘Direct responsibility of the US and Britain. We’re praying for Zakhar.’

The Security Service of Ukraine (SSU) neither ‘confirmed nor denied’ its involvement in the car bombing, the Ukrainian state news agency Ukrinform reported.

‘Officially, we can neither confirm nor deny the involvement of the SSU in this or that (explosion) that happens to the occupiers and their henchmen,’ a spokesperson for the security agency said.

‘We will be able to talk about who is behind this or that case already after our victory, which is certainly coming soon,’ the spokesperson added.

Atesh, a shady militant group operating from Russian-occupied patches of Ukraine, alleged that the movement was behind the attack but presented no evidence.

‘The Atesh movement has been hunting for Prilepin since the beginning of the year,’ the group said in a Telegram post.

‘Zakhar Prilepin was a s****y writer and as a person he was rubbish.’

Prilepin has been pro-President Vladimir Putin since 2014 when Moscow illegally annexed Crimea. The writer was later among a lengthy list of Russians high up in Putin’s orbit sanctioned by the EU.

Five years later, he founded the political party For Truth, which campaigned for the swallowing up of eastern Ukraine territory into Russia.

Prilepin’s party later entered the fold of A Just Russia, a pro-Kremlin social-democratic party, which Prilepin is now co-chair.

In a sign that Russian nationalism was gobbling up the country’s political system, he was elected to the Duma, Russia’s parliament, but gave up his seat. At the time, Russian media couldn’t help but wonder if Prilepin did so as he is harbouring presidential ambitions.

A Just Russia chairman Sergei Mironov described the bombing as a ‘terrorist act’.

Prilepin fought for Russian proxy forces in the Donbas region before last year’s invasion erupted.

‘I led a combat unit that killed a large number of people,’ he bragged in a 2019 interview with the Donbas news outlet Eastern Variant.

  • Coronation observed by tribe that revered Prince Philip as a deity

Coronation observed by tribe that revered Prince Philip as a deity

King Charles coronation was observed on a South Pacific island, thousands of miles distant from the pomp and circumstance in Westminster Abbey in London.

It was a historic occasion in Tanna, a volcanic island south of Vanuatu and the birthplace of the Prince Philip movement, which claims the late monarch as a long-lost ancestor.

About 1,000 islanders gathered in the untamed highlands to commemorate the occasion, far from the crowds at Buckingham Palace.

This is where the Kastom people are based. Since the 1960s, they believe Queen Elizabeth II’s husband was the son of a mountain spirit.

Ahead of the coronation, they were sent a framed portrait of the new king from Britain’s acting high commissioner Michael Watters.

‘I am very happy because Philip’s child is Charles. I am very happy with Charles,’ chief Yabah, who once travelled to Windsor Castle and met Philip, said.

He said he would like to visit Buckingham Palace, but also extended an invitation to the new king

‘I want him to come to my place and see me here, in Tanna,’ he added.

Coronation of King Charles III latest

Villagers danced and sang as part of the celebration before drinking shells full of kava – a peppery, mildly intoxicating root drink that is a key part of Pacific culture.

British diplomats joined them on the special coronation mission, gifting them the portrait.

Tribal leaders will add it to a fading collection of pictures showing Philip in his prime, which have long been among the movement’s most treasured possessions.

Mr Watters, who flew to Tanna from the capital Port Vila, shuffled in at the end of a long procession, flanked by village elders.

He said: ‘I have been greeted with such warmth and joy by the community.

‘The ceremony was a wonderful way to pay respect to the unique relationship shared by the UK and Vanuatu.’

In 2021, the tribal community mourned the death of Philip and held a period of mourning, performing ritualistic dances and holding a procession.

Over the years, he had corresponded with the villagers, and sent pictures of himself holding a ceremonial club they gave him.

  • 52 anti-monarchy demonstrators detained by police during coronation

52 anti-monarchy demonstrators detained by police during coronation

At the crowning of King Charles on Saturday, police detained the leader of the anti-monarchy group Republic along with 51 other people, citing their obligation to suppress dissent as a higher priority.

In order to stand out among the red, white, and blue-clad throng lined the procession route in central London, hundreds of yellow-clad protesters congregated there while holding posters reading “Not My King.”

The Republic campaign organisation said that its leader Graham Smith had been taken into custody before the procession started, and images of police removing the demonstrators’ banners from the streets of London appeared on social media.

‘We absolutely understand public concern following the arrests we made this morning,’ Commander Karen Findlay of the London Metropolitan police said in a statement.

‘Over the past 24 hours there has been a significant police operation after we received information protesters were determined to disrupt the Coronation procession.’

Republic had vowed to mount the biggest protest against a British monarch in modern history and protesters booed as King Charles and Queen Camilla made their way to Westminster Abbey, and as the service was relayed publicly on large speakers.

‘It is disgusting and massively over the top,’ said Kevin John, 57, a salesman from Devon who was among the protesters.

‘It is also hugely counterproductive by the police because all it has done is create a massive amount of publicity for us. It is completely crazy.’

Police did not confirm Smith’s arrest. They said they had acted because they believed protesters would seek to deface public monuments with paint and disrupt ‘official movements’.

‘All of these people remain in custody,’ Findlay said.

Protests also took place in Glasgow in Scotland and Cardiff in Wales, with participants holding up signs saying: ‘Abolish the monarchy, feed the people.’

Coronation of King Charles III latest

On social media, many contrasted the cost of living crisis in Britain with the pomp and pageantry on display at the coronation.

Although the protesters were in a minority compared with the tens of thousands gathered on London’s streets to support the king, polls suggest support for the monarchy is declining and is weakest among young people.

With the crown passing from Queen Elizabeth to her less popular son, republican activists hope Charles will be the last British monarch to be crowned.

‘It has a hereditary billionaire individual born into wealth and privilege who basically symbolises the inequality of wealth and power in our society,’ said Clive Lewis, an opposition Labour Party lawmaker.

Most of the anti-monarchy protesters on Saturday had congregated in Trafalgar Square next to the bronze statue of King Charles I, who was beheaded in 1649, leading to a short-lived republic.

Since Charles became king last September, there have been protests at royal events. He was heckled at a Commonwealth Day event at Westminster Abbey in March and targeted with eggs in York in November.

The death of the queen has also reignited debate in Australia, Jamaica and other parts of the commonwealth about the need to retain Charles as their head of state.

The state government of New South Wales said it had decided not to light up the sails of the Sydney Opera House to mark the coronation in order to save money. Events to mark the coronation in other countries where Charles is head of state were also low key.

While many other European monarchies have come and gone, or are far diminished in scale and importance, the British royal family has remained remarkably resilient.

In Britain, polls show the majority of the population still want the royal family, but there is a long-term trend of declining support.

A poll by YouGov last month found 64% of people in Britain said they had little or no interest in the coronation. Among those aged 18 to 24, the number voicing little or no interest rose to 75%.

  • New fisheries assessment is a wake up call for Ghana

New fisheries assessment is a wake up call for Ghana

Despite some recent growth in Ghana’s fishing industry, it is still thought that the sector lacks the necessary level of transparency to guide the nation toward social, environmental, and economic sustainability and prosperity.

A new report launched last week shows that Ghana’s Fisheries governance setup has not been proactive in putting out updated, accurate and easily accessible information online for public consumption.

The latest Taking Stock Transparency Assessment was conducted by the Fisheries Transparency Initiative (FiTI) in collaboration with the Centre for Maritime Law and Security (CEMLAWS) Africa.

Stakeholders gathered at the launch all acknowledged the need to do better, with the Deputy Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Moses Anim highlighting that it is a “Wake Up Call for Ghana to join the Fisheries Transparency Initiative”.

Indeed, the Fisheries Transparency Initiative is an international multi-stakeholder effort that provides a unique global framework to help coastal countries to increase the credibility and quality of national fisheries information towards the sustainability of marine fisheries.

If Ghana joins the FiTI, commitment must come from the highest level of government, that is the President or the sector Minister in signing up as a FiTI Candidate country. To be considered a FiTI-compliant country, Ghana must adhere to the FiTI standard, which prescribes a comprehensive and credible way to achieve and maintain high levels of transparency on the management of the marine fisheries sector and the activities of fishers and fishing companies.

Touching extensively on the subject on the Eye on Port program, the Executive Director of the Fisheries Transparency Initiative, Sven Biermann, said it is absolutely necessary for information on the sector in Ghana to be publicly accessible online, given that the country’s online use is above the global average.

“If you look at the global average, 60% people access the internet on a regular basis, in Ghana it is 69%. Almost 7 out of 10 people in Ghana access the internet so it is the way to go to provide information to the people of Ghana,” he said.

According to the Fisheries Transparency Initiative, many governments are not disclosing even basic information on their fisheries sector, such as laws, permits, fish agreements, stock assessments, financial contributions, catch data, and subsidies. Also, not all companies are reliably reporting on catch volumes, fishing practices and payments to governments. Furthermore, the data that is already publicly available is often incomplete, outdated, unverified, or not readily accessible, affecting the capacity of governments to manage their marine fisheries efficiently and sustainably, as well as the ability for effective oversight and accountability.

The Executive Director of FiTI said, during his stay in Ghana, he was asked on his opinion on the close season policy strategy adopted in Ghana.

He said, “it is certainly not our job to say whether certain management aspects are working in a particular country. But even if I wanted to, I could not answer this question. Because the government has reports that look at how successful the close season was on the biodiversity of the targeted fish species, how it helps to recover the fish stock and the socio-economic impacts but that report is not publicly accessible so even if you wanted to understand whether the government is heading in the right direction you cannot.”

Sven Biermann also urged the Fisheries Commission and its mother ministry for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development to reconcile data, and publish on a singular online platform during the dissemination of public information in order the avoid the overlaps and discrepancies that exist.

Adding on to that, the Director at the Center for Coastal Management (CCM), Professor Dennis Aheto called for more work to be done in the collection of fisheries data.

He said Ghana has relied heavily on collecting fisheries-dependent data but more efforts should also be put into collecting fisheries-independent data.

“Fisheries dependent data focuses heavily on effort and catch but the need to collect other aquatic and environmental parameters to get environmental data on the fish stock population, abundance is to a large extent is not collected. We will need the fisheries-independent data to be able to validate whatever data we are already getting from the fisheries-dependent data so we can make the right decisions for our sector. Unfortunately, this is not happening,” Prof. Aheto lamented.

The seasoned academic said the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) code of conduct outlines how data collection procedures must be done and curated for decisions, yet Ghana is unable to do this.

He said data collection gaps add up to the plethora of challenges bedeviling the sector in Ghana.

Also speaking on Eye on Port, the Team Lead in charge of training and partnerships at the Center for Maritime Law and Security, Nelson Atanga Ayamdoo revealed that, following the report launch, government representatives have demonstrated some commitment to work with CEMLAWS and FiTI to undertake the recommendations that were presented to them.

He said that because of the importance of fisheries to the country’s long-term development, his organization has made it a priority to help identify and address any shortcomings in Ghana’s fisheries governance and management.

ASEPA reveals why Akufo-Addo did not re-appoint Prof Boateng

The Executive Director of the Alliance for Social Equity and Public Accountability (ASEPA), Mensah Thompson, has given the supposed reason behind President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s failure to retain Prof Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, as the Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, during his second team.

According to him, Prof Frimpong-Boateng was hated by leading figures in the Akufo-Addo government because he allegedly refused to pay a fraudulent judgement debt to a company represented by leading figures in the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Speaking in an XYZ TV interview, Mensah Thompson said that Prof Frimpong-Boateng refused to give the authorisation for the said company to be paid over $88 million in judgement debt even though the president and his finance minister, Ken Ofori-Atta were on his neck.

“The said project was supposed to be done under the NDC government but it was not done. After the change in government, members of this government decided to connive with the company to come for a judgement debt to the turn of $88 million.

“The project was under Frimpong Boateng’s ministry and they needed his validation but he told the president that he is not in the position to validate the transaction because of the infractions sighted by the auditor general on the project and it not being in the handing over notes from his predecessors,” he said in Twi.

Mensah Thompson again alleged that the government wanted to use the said company to steal money from the people of Ghana but Prof Frimpong Boateng stopped it and that is why he is so disliked by the government contrary to assertions that he (Frimpong Boateng) harbours some bitterness towards the government because he was not retained as minister.

“The company did not go to court. They (the government) went to sit with the company and told them to bring the letter for the judgment debt.

“They sat down to plan to rob the nation of $88 million dollars but Frimpong Boateng refused to validate it. This was the nail in the coffin of Prof Frimpong Boateng. This is the same thing they did to Martin Amidu… Those saying that Frimpong Boateng is bitter, don’t know the facts, it is President Akufo-Addo and his government who are bitter about Frimpong Boateng,” he added.

  • Biden’s absence from the coronation is an insult to the Brits greatly – Trump

Biden’s absence from the coronation is an insult to the Brits greatly – Trump

Joe Biden has come under fire from Donald Trump for skipping the King’s coronation, saying that his absence has ‘greatly humiliated’ the British people.

Joe Biden ought to have attended King Charles III’s coronation. That seems like a lot to ask, doesn’t it? In a post on his Truth Social network, the former president spoke himself.

The British public is deeply offended. It makes sense why our popularity is dwindling everywhere. RENEW THE GREATNESS OF AMERICA! He continued.

Despite the ‘special relationship’ between the two countries, no US president has ever attended a royal coronation, and last month Biden announced he would not be making an exception.

Instead, the president sent his wife Jill Biden in his place instead, along with her 22-year-old granddaughter, Finnegan.

In an earlier post on Saturday to Truth Social, Trump also wished the king and queen best wishes, writing, ‘Good Luck and Best Wishes to the wonderful new King and Queen of The United Kingdom.

‘You are two very Special People. May your Reign be a Long and Glorious One. GOD BLESS YOU BOTH!!!’

Nevertheless, President Biden congratulated King Charles III and Queen Camilla in a Twitter post on Saturday morning.

‘The enduring friendship between the US and the UK is a source of strength for both our peoples,’ Mr Biden wrote.

The First Lady added that it was an ‘honor to represent the United States on this historic day at Westminster Abbey’ in a statement posted to Twitter.

Mr Trump, who is currently facing a civil rape and defamation trial in the US, also failed to attend the ceremony.

Coronation of King Charles III latest

The president’s decision not to attend drew some domestic criticism from commentators and analysts.

Nile Gardiner, foreign policy analyst and former aide to British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, tweeted, ‘Leaders from across the world are attending today’s Coronation of King Charles III. Even the French President is there.

‘Notably absent is Joe Biden, who could not be bothered.

‘What message does this send to America’s closest ally? Biden is a petty, arrogant, sneering disgrace.’

However, Laura Beers, a professor of history at American University, told the BBC ‘I certainly don’t view it as a snub on President Biden’s part.’

‘It is a non-story in terms of the idea that Biden is anti-British,’ she said. “He’s not going because no American president has ever gone to a coronation, so why start in the 21st century.’

Prior to the reign of Queen Victoria, the relationship between Britain and the US was largely adversarial following the American Revolution and the War of 1812.

Although relations later thawed and the coronation of Queen Victoria was the source of much interest in the States, then-president Martin Van Buren did not attend the coronation.

At the time it was simply not practical for an American president to attend such ceremonies, and the practice became tradition after that.

Adorable moment Charlotte holds Louis’ hand for their Grandpa Wales’ coronation

Prince Louis and Princess Charlotte clutched hands gently as they made their way to their grandfather’s coronation.

The Prince and Princess of Wales and their children arrived among the final attendees for today’s historic ceremony.

Louis gave everyone a cautious wave as the family’s car drove up in front of Westminster Hall, looking a little overwhelmed.

His sister Charlotte then eased any anxieties he may have had, as she confidently took his hand as the pair walked in.

Prince Louis shifted in his seat during the ceremony and, as any five-year-old would, seemed to get distracted at times.

During the first half of the ceremony, he could be seen letting out a big yawn. At one point, he took the opportunity to excitedly point out something of interest to Charlotte.

King Charles was then humbled by his grandson who, mere moments after the monarch was crowned, let out a large yawn in response.

During the ceremony, Kate Middleton, Princess of Wales, gave a sentimental nod to tradition with her outfit of a white dress with a blue robe.

Coronation of King Charles III latest

Meanwhile Prince George was seen wearing his Page of Honour red ceremonial uniform, Charlotte chose a white dress with a white cape and Louis donned a dark blue and black button-up uniform.

Nine-year-old Prince George, as a future King, is playing an important role in the coronation today.

He was named as one the pages of honour of the ceremony, and forms part of the procession through Westminster Abbey.

He has also helped hold the robes of his grandfather Charles during the two-and-a-half hour ceremony.

Afterwards he will sit in a carriage behind the King and Queen Consort with his siblings and the Prince and Princess of Wales.

Kate previously said she was happy for her oldest son to participate in the ceremony as long as he was not the subject of ‘overwhelming scrutiny’.

Princess Charlotte, who is William and Kate’s only daughter, turned eight on Tuesday.

Despite being third in line to the throne, she is playing only a small role in the coronation.

After watching her grandfather be crowned King, she will accompany her siblings in the procession from the church after the ceremony.

She is then likely to join her family on the balcony of Buckingham Palace.

Prince Louis, 5, is the youngest of William and Kate’s three children.

Due to his young age he will not have a large role in the coronation, but is expected to join his family in the procession and on the balcony of Buckingham Palace.

It is not the youngsters’ first experience of a royal carriage procession, with the trio waving to crowds from a landau during the Platinum Jubilee celebrations last year.

Huge crowds have gathered to watch the royal procession – viewing areas were full by 8.30am – with thousands more watching on big screens across the country.

Others had arrived to the coronation ceremony earlier – including Prince Harry.

  • Kusi Boateng’s case was thrown out because of irregularities- Ablakwa

Kusi Boateng’s case was thrown out because of irregularities- Ablakwa

Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has highlighted a number of reasons that accounted for the dismissal of the contempt of court suit brought against him by clergyman Rev. Victor Kusi Boateng.

Ablakwa, speaking on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana show on May 5, 2023, said the court threw out Kusi Boateng because of procedural and material evidence relative to service of the suit he is accused of disrespecting.

He revealed that the bailiff who met him at Metro TV in February to serve him with the papers was unknown to the courts.

The judge, he noted had also dismissed the case because of irregularities and inconsistencies in the case of the plaitiff.

“The judge was very clear that the whole arrangement of the attempt to serve me was unconstitutional, it was clearly an entrapment.

“The persons who came to this premises to serve me were not bailiffs of the court, a search was conducted at the registry of court and no court official had been sent to serve me.

“It is still a mystery who those guys are and who did the recording. The whole thing was clearly a set up,” he submitted.

Aside the irregularity and inconsistency bit he also noted that the plaintiff had breached an order of the Chief Justice that only bailiffs should serve originating processes.

Ablakwa described the judgment as “well received, erudite and sound.”

  • Seven key discussion points surround the results of the local elections

Seven key discussion points surround the results of the local elections

The municipal elections, which have 8,000 seats, can sound frightening, but here’s what you need to know

Updates on the local elections in England have been coming in since the polls closed at 10 p.m. last night, starting in the early morning hours.

With the typical excitement of every democratic vote in the UK come large gains—some unexpected, others predicted.

This year, the local elections were set against the backdrop of the cost of living crisis, the war in Ukraine and the lingering impact of the Covid pandemic.

But what were the key takeaways?

    Blue Wall loses several bricks

Labour stormed through Tory heartland to make gains described as ‘hugely significant’ by Sir Keir.

Medway was among the local authority areas painted red, with Labour set to run the Kent council for the first time since 1998.

The party also gained East Staffordshire, where four years ago the Tories picked up a mighty 25 seats, when Labour was left with just 10.

Sir Keir told said ‘road to a better Britain’ begins now and will be ‘paved with Labour wins’.

He added: ‘We all know there’s no place for letting up. Let’s never mistake confidence for complacency.

‘But we are going to bottle this feeling we have today and then we’re going to turn it into a general election win next year.’

The Conservatives suffered huge losses in what has been Rishi Sunak’s first electoral test since being handed the keys to No 10.

They lost control of the likes of Welwyn Hatfield – in Energy Secretary Grant Shapps’ constituency – where both the Lib Dems and Labour made gains.

But the Prime Minister maintained that ‘progress’ is still being made for his party.

He told Sky News: ‘‘It’s always disappointing to lose hard-working Conservative councillors, they’re friends, they’re colleagues and I’m so grateful to them for everything they’ve done.

‘In terms of the results, it’s still early, we’ve just had a quarter of the results in, but what I am going to carry on doing is delivering on the people’s priorities – halving inflation, growing the economy, reducing debt, cutting waiting lists and stopping the boats. ‘That’s what people want us to do, that’s what I’m going to keep hard at doing.’

    No ID, no vote

Last night, the elections watchdog said ‘regrettably’ some people were turned away from polling stations.

The local elections were the first of its kind to be carried out under new rules which required voters to carry photographic ID.

Critics say the move could discourage young people and disenfranchise minority voters, both of which are likely to be Labour voters.

Gillian Long, 42, said ID requirements are ‘a load of rubbish’ after she was stopped from voting by an administration error between her ID and the registration system in East Riding, Yorkshire.

Ms Long said her address ‘wasn’t down right on their system’ and fumed ‘If you want people to vote, you should make it as easy as possible, and they’ve added a barrier.’

    Green history

The Green Party has secured sole control of an English council for the very first time.

They currently have the 18 seats on Mid Suffolk District Council needed for majority on the 34-seat authority, with four wards yet to declare.

Previously, the local authority was run by a 16-seat minority Conservative administration.

Andy Mellen, leader of the Green Party in Mid Suffolk, said: ‘We are looking forward to getting to work.’

The Green Party’s co-leader in England and Wales, Adrian Ramsay, said the party had seen ‘fantastic results’ in both rural and urban areas, winning seats from Labour as well as the Conservatives.

He added the victory in Mid Suffolk would ‘pave the way for electing the first Green MP in the area as well to really represent people on a national stage as well as locally’.

    What about Scotland?

While Scotland is dealing with ample political drama of its own, it did not host any local elections yesterday.

But party members north of the border still kept a close eye on today’s unfolding proceedings.

Some results suggest, based of current results, Labour will win the next general election, but without an overall majority.

Stephen Flynn, the SNP leader at Westminster, said this shows Scots should vote SNP so Scotland can ‘pull the strings’ of a minority UK government.

In a statement he said: ‘It’s increasingly clear that the SNP can hold the balance of power after the next general election – putting Scotland in prime position to pull the strings of a minority UK government.

‘Voting SNP is the best way to beat the Tories in Scotland – and every vote for the SNP will be crucial to ensure Scotland wields real power and influence.’

But the rise of Labour’s popularity in England could sway voters away from the SNP, which has been tarnished by the ongoing investigation into the party’s finances.

    Young minds of the future

A teenager only just able to vote has become of the country’s youngest councillors – and stolen the seat of his town’s mayor in the process. Labour in Redditch picked up six seats – including in Church Hill, where 18-year-old James Fardoe claimed the scalp of Tory Ann Isherwood.

His brother Jack wrote on Twitter: ‘Well done to my brother James Fardoe, who was elected in Church Hill in Redditch. Not only did he beat the incumbent mayor, but he is only 18.’

Reacting to his victory on Facebook, James wrote: ‘I would like to thank my opponent, Ann Isherwood, for all her work over the past four years, it was an honour to run against you and once again thank you for your hard work. I would also like to thank all of the Redditch Labour Party and all the volunteers that helped me in Church Hill, I appreciate all the support everyone gave me in this election.

‘I would lastly like to thank everyone who went out to vote yesterday, not just for Labour but all the other parties, who put their trust in democracy and the candidates.’

The newly-elected councillor campaigned for more parking spaces, more youth facilities and more support for local businesses.

Are the Tories really doomed at the next general election? Or could Keir’s lack of star power undermine his party’s efforts?

    Republican wave

King Charles may have missed the majority of local election updates, as he is slightly busy with Coronation preparations today.

But there have been interest results in the ward of Highgrove House, the family residence of King Charles III and Queen Camilla, which lies in the Cotswold District Council ward.

Liberal Democrat Chris Twells believes the country should follow the Irish model of a republic, has been elected to represent the Tetbury with Upton ward.

But he has faced calls to quit his seat in north-west England after winning a second election 160 miles away in Gloucestershire.

Mr Twells beat the Conservatives by 60 votes to secure the Tetbury with Upton ward a mere 12 months after he defeated Labour to gain the Ordsall ward for the Lib Dems at Salford City Council, Greater Manchester.

He is expected to stand down from the latte role

    Dogs out in full force

While newshounds have stayed up all night to cover the results of the election, during the day it was an army of dogs who helped encourage people to vote.

As is British tradition, voters snap pics of their pups outside polling stations.

Many were shared to Twitter with the hashtag #DogsAtPollingStations.

Regardless of your politics, I’m sure we can all agree that there were a great selection of very good boys out in full force.

  • National Cathedral: Lawyer Eric Otchere Darko rebuts Ablakwa’s claims

National Cathedral: Lawyer Eric Otchere Darko rebuts Ablakwa’s claims

Lawyer Eric Otchere Darko, a trustee of the National Cathedral of Ghana project in the United States, has responded to the latest exposé on the construction of the project by the Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.

According to legal practitioner, the allegation made by the MP, including the National Cathedral being fraudulently registered, are mere fabrications.

Lawyer Otchere Darko explained that none of the clergymen on the Board of the Cathedral in Ghana are not on the Board of Trustees in the US because they are not US citizens.

He added that for a company to be registered under a person’s name in the US, the person must either be a US citizen or a US resident with a green card.

“The National Cathedral Foundation is a tax exemption company and for such a company can only be registered in the US by an American citizen or a green card holder with a social security number,” he said in Twi in an Okay FM interview monitored by GhanaWeb.

The lawyer also said that a claim by Ablakwa that the consultant of the cathedral project, Cary Lee Summers, was paid US$6 million and operates from a warehouse, is false.

He added that the facility Ablakwa went to was a warehouse and not the office of Lee Summers and that to the best of his knowledge, the consultant has been paid less than $1 million.

    What Ablakwa said:

Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa alleged that the American consultant to the National Cathedral project gave an official address that leads to a warehouse.

He said that when he visited the facility during his trip, he saw no offices but rather: “a ramshackle warehouse with the inscription: Churchill Coffee Company, Wholesale Division.”

“We also decided to embark on the long travel to Springfield in Missouri where Mr. Cary Lee Summers who has been given US$ 6 million of our money is described on the National Cathedral of Ghana website as Consultant for the United States.

“When we arrived at that address, there was nothing about the Nehemiah Group. We surprisingly saw quite a ramshackle warehouse with the inscription: Churchill Coffee Company, Wholesale Division,” he added.

The MP also said that Eric Okyere Darko, a member of the legal team of Assin Central Member of Parliament, Kennedy Agyapong, was listed as a trustee on the Ghana National Cathedral in Washington DC registration documents in the United States.

The MP stated in his social media post that per his checks, the project’s registration details in Ghana differed from what he got from that of the US.

Also, whiles eminent clergymen were dominant on the Board of Trustees in Ghana registration papers, in the case of the US, there were three persons.

The only common personality on both sides is Dr Paul Opoku-Mensah, the Executive Secretary to the National Cathedral of Ghana project.

Two teens die after being hit by drunk driver

On Long Island, two adolescents were killed when a drunk driver travelling the wrong way on a highway crashed into their car.

According to officials, the incident happened on Wednesday night in a suburb of Nassau County. Around 10.30 p.m., Amandeep Singh was travelling south in a northbound lane on a roadway in Jericho, New York, when he collided with a vehicle carrying four teens who were leaving a tennis match.

The youngsters were travelling on the right side of a small Alfa Romeo sedan, driven by Singh, 34, who was also driving a Dodge pickup truck.

‘One of the most catastrophic scenes I’ve seen in a long time. The debris field was almost like the car exploded,’ Nassau County Police Captain Stephen Fitzpatrick said. ‘The pickup truck went airborne, spinning, and landed 300 feet away.’

The crash killed the two 14-year-old boys sitting on the right side of the car. They have not yet been identified by authorities, but NBC New York confirmed their identities as Drew Hassenbein and Ethan Falkowitz, citing a note sent to parents at Roslyn Public Schools.

The two 14-year-olds were described as ‘stars’ in youth tennis. Despite being middle school students, the two teenagers both played for the Roslyn High School varsity team.

The two teenagers on the left side of the vehicle, a 16-year-old and a 17-year-old, were injured and hospitalized in stable condition.

Additionally, the sedan struck another nearby car, carrying a 49-year-old woman and a 16-year-old boy. Both at the scene for minor injuries.

Singh tried to flee from the scene on foot before officers arrived, according to the felony complaint filed against him.

The suspect didn’t get far, and when he was located by police down the street they noticed ‘glassy, bloodshot eyes, a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from his breath, blood on his shirt, and a laceration to the back of his head.’

A breathalyzer test revealed Singh had a 0.18% blood-alcohol level, which is more than twice the legal limit to drive.

At a press briefing after Singh’s first court appearance, Captain Fitzpatrick said the Roslyn, New York resident was ‘highly intoxicated’ and told officers he was coming from a birthday party.

‘He thought he was in New Jersey. He asked our officers, “what are you doing here, it’s New Jersey?”‘

Singh has been charged with aggravated vehicular homicide, first-degree vehicular manslaughter, second-degree manslaughter, leaving the scene of an accident with a fatality, driving while intoxicated, and two counts of second-degree assault.

“My new song titled ‘Win’ has become a morning devotion song, and when you wake up in the morning and you play it, the song makes you eager to succeed in whatever work you are going to do,” he said.

He also justified that while listening to the song, one needs to have confidence that one will win, and they surely will.

Google employee dies after jumping from the office

According to report, a Google software engineer died after collapsing at the internet company’s Manhattan offices.

According to the New York Post, which cited police sources, a 31-year-old man died after falling to his death on Thursday night at approximately 11.30 p.m.

According to reports, the individual was employed by the search engine at its Chelsea headquarters at 111 8th Avenue. He was discovered unresponsive on the street and rushed to Bellevue Hospital, where he was later declared dead.

Handprints and footprints were reportedly found at an open-air terrace on the Google building’s 14th floor. The man left no note before the fatal fall.

The New York Police Department (NYPD) was not able to confirm details of the incident yet.

Metro.co.uk has also reached out to Google, who have not responded to any requests for comment.

Thursday’s incident is the second reported death of a New York City Google employee in just over two months.

On February 16, Jacob Pratt, a 33-year-old partnership leader at the company, was found dead in his apartment. His death was ruled a suicide.

It’s also the second falling death in New York City this week. On Tuesday, a 20-year-old mother from Colorado fell to her death from a Times Square hotel.

Dezirae Andersen was found dead after falling from the roof of the OYO Times Square hotel on West 47th Street. Police said that she got into a physical fight with her boyfriend, Tyler Griffin, just before the fatal plunge.

Police were originally called to the hotel on reports of Griffin assaulting Andersen in her hotel room.

Andersen then fell from the building’s 10th floor, and landed on scaffolding above the street.

Police have since arrested Griffin, 24, and charged him with assault, reckless endangerment, and acting in a manner that could have harmed a baby.

  • US public health director resigns after WHO Covid-19 announcement

US public health director resigns after WHO Covid-19 announcement

In the midst of Covid-19’s downgrading from a global emergency, the director of the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has announced her departure.

Dr. Rochelle Walensky, 54, announced on Friday that she will leave her position as the head of the main public health organisation in the nation. On June 30, she will vacate the position.

In an email to the CDC, Walensky stated, “I took on this role with the goal of leaving behind the dark days of the pandemic and moving the CDC – and public health – into a much better and more trusted place.”

Walensky emailed staff shortly after President Joe Biden addressed her resignation.

‘She marshaled our finest scientists and public health experts to turn the tide on the urgent crises we’ve faced,’ stated Biden.

‘Dr Walensky leaves CDC a stronger institution, better positioned to confront health threats and protect Americans.’

Earlier on Friday, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced that the coronavirus is no longer considered a global emergency. The declaration came more than three years after millions of people were killed worldwide and widespread lockdowns hurt economies.

‘It’s with great hope that I declare COVID-19 over as a global health emergency,’ stated WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. ‘That does not mean COVID-19 is over as a global health threat.’

Still, Tedros warned that new coronavirus variants could emerge and that the world is out of the emergency phase, but there have been a rise in cases in Southeast Asia as well as the Middle East.

Walensky in her resignation letter added: ‘The end of the Covid public health emergency marks a tremendous transition for our country, for public health, and in my tenure as CDC Director.’

She served just over two years as CDC director, during which the agency was entangled in various controversies.

In January, the Center for Strategic & International Studies (CSIS) flagged severe deficiencies in how the CDC was being run and called for an overhaul.

‘The big picture here is, we all see the need for a reset of the agency,’ CSIS member and former CDC Director Julie Gerberding, told CNN at the time.

It was not immediately known who will take over the CDC director position.

Man, 33, charged with murder for stabbing a woman to death

In south London, a woman was fatally stabbed in what is thought to have been a random attack. A man has been charged with her murder.

At around 4 p.m. on Monday, Johanita Kossiwa Dogbey, 31, was fatally attacked in Stockwell Park Walk, Brixton, and she was declared dead at the scene.

Murder and possession of an offensive weapon are the charges brought against Mohamed Nur, 33, of Vauxhall, southwest London.

He has also been charged with three counts of GBH against two women and a man who suffered slash injuries in separate incidents in Brixton, all within a one-hour period on Saturday, April 29.

Nur is due to attend Croydon Magistrates Court on Friday, 5 May.

At the time of her murder, Ms Dogbey was reportedly on her way home from buying a birthday gift for her mother and speaking on the phone to her grandmother, who heard ‘a terrible scream’.

Ms Dogbey was walking when she was attacked from behind by a stranger, detectives believe.

Her loved ones described her as a ‘smart, dedicated and loving girl who always helped anyone’.

In a statement released through the Metropolitan Police, they said: ‘She hasn’t got one bad bone in her body. She wouldn’t hurt a fly.

‘We can’t believe a senseless crime like this has happened as we can’t imagine who would do this to her.’

Rishi responds to the ‘disappointing’ election results

The results of the ongoing local elections have been dubbed “disappointing” by Rishi Sunak.

In the Prime Minister’s first election after receiving the keys to No. 10, the Conservatives suffered severe defeats.

‘It’s always upsetting to lose devoted Conservative councillors; they’re friends and colleagues, and I’m so appreciative of everything they’ve done,’ Mr. Sunak said in a statement to Sky News.

“Regarding the results, it’s still early; only a quarter of the results are in. Nevertheless, I’m going to keep working to meet the priorities of the public, which include halving inflation, expanding the economy, lowering debt, eliminating waiting lists, and halting the boats.

‘That’s what people want us to do, that’s what I’m going to keep hard at doing.’

Mr Sunak maintained that ‘progress’ is still being made for his party.

Around 8,000 seats across 230 councils were up for grabs in the elections, and poll booths closed at 10pm last night.

Already, the Conservatives have lost control in councils in Tamworth, Brentford and North West Leicestershire.

Keir Starmer’s party also seized control of Plymouth – a result branded ‘terrible’ by Government minister and local MP Johnny Mercer.

Meanwhile, Northern Ireland Secretary Chris Heaton-Harris said the party had experienced a ‘bit of a blip’ following the turmoil in No 10 which saw Boris Johnson and Liz Truss ousted before Mr Sunak took office.

He attempted to present the expected losses as mid-term blues for the Tories, telling Sky News: ‘The British people are a very sensible group of folk and they understand what’s important.

‘Occasionally they like to give political parties a bit of a reminder of who the politicians serve. Certainly when you get into being mid-term in a government you get quite a bit of that.’

The local elections were the first of its kind to be carried out under new rules which required voters to carry photographic ID.

Critics say could discourage young people and disenfranchise minority voters, both of which are likely to be Labour voters.

There are around 2 million people without photographic ID, and of those around 86,000 have applied for the new certificate, research by The Big Issue has found.

Are the Tories really doomed at the next general election? Or could Keir’s lack of star power undermine his party’s efforts?

Many have had their applications rejected, FOI research found.

Issues with photographs, not being registered to vote in the first place, or not submitting their national insurance numbers were the most common reasons for rejection.

Last night, the elections watchdog said ‘regrettably’ some people were turned away from polling stations as a result.

As is British tradition, several dogs popped along to polling stations yesterday and, while they were not able to vote, they did pose for several cute photos.

Minerals Commission CEO reveals how small-scale mining task force arrested 3 Yemenis in Oda

The CEO of the Minerals Commission, Martin Ayisi has disclosed that on Monday, May 1, the small-scale mining task force in Oda arrested three Yemenis in the area.

He said that the Commission has involved the police to undertake the necessary procedures to prosecute the perpetrators.

“Just this Monday, the holiday, the small scale task force and the Minerals Commission office in Oda arrested three Yemenis and then impounded two excavators, which are now parked at the police station.”

However, Mr Ayisi further indicated that upon the arrest, the Chief of the area visited the office of the task force and claimed ownership of the mining site that was being used by the Yemenis.

He told the host of Newsfile, Samson Lardey Anyenini, “Then a chief showed up, says, ‘ɛha yɛ medeɛ —this is my site.’

“So quickly, the police arrested them. The locals who were working fled. They’ve been arrested. We got the authorities involved. I think they’ve been granted a police inquiry bill.”

Mr Ayisi then emphasised that the fight against galamsey seemed unprogressive because influential people in society were involved in the operation, explaining that if persons such as the chief are not prosecuted and subjected to the full rigours of the law, they will be viewed by citizens as having impunity.

This perception, he pointed out, would make citizens also believe that if they engage in galamsey, they can get away with their crime.

Although he asserted that the penalties and the sanction regimes were punitive, he emphasised that they should be biting to be effective.

Mr Ayisi suggested that if the perpetrators involved in galamsey— especially the influential people— are arrested, they should be publicised and imprisoned so as to deter other citizens from engaging in the act.

“So, for instance, this chief, if he’s convicted by the court in Oda and is put in jail and is well publicised … then you are sending a strong signal to everybody that, hey, you can go to jail,” he stressed.

  • Politician and wife detained for 14 years for organ harvesting plot

Politician and wife detained for 14 years for organ harvesting plot

A wealthy Nigerian politician and his wife were sentenced to prison for planning to have a young man trafficked to the UK so they could use his organs to treat their ailing daughter.

Multimillionaire Senator Ike Ekweremadu, 60, his wife Beatrice, 56, and medical “middleman” Dr. Obinna Obeta, 51, were convicted guilty at the Old Bailey in March as a result of a landmark case involving contemporary slavery.

The Ekweremadus’ 25-year-old daughter Sonia needed a kidney, so they sent their victim, a street vendor in Lagos, to the UK.

He fled in fear of his life and walked into a police station exactly a year ago to report what had happened after the Royal Free Hospital called a halt on the private £80,000 procedure.

In a televised sentencing on Friday, Mr Justice Johnson recognised Ike Ekweremadu’s ‘substantial fall from grace’ as he jailed him for nine years and eight months.

Beatrice Ekweremadu was jailed for four years and six months and Obeta for 10 years.

The senior judge said: ‘People-trafficking across international borders for the harvesting of human organs is a form of slavery.

‘It treats human beings and their body parts as commodities to be bought and sold.

‘It is a trade that preys on poverty, misery and desperation.’

He told the defendants: ‘You each played a part in that despicable trade.’

On the question of harm to the victim if the intended transplant went ahead, he said: ‘He would have faced spending the rest of his life with only one kidney and without the requisite funding for the required aftercare.’

He added the risks had not been properly explained and there had been no consent ‘in any meaningful sense’.

During the hearing, the victim, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, said he only found out what was planned when he was taken to the north London hospital for an initial consultation.

In a statement read to court: ‘I would never (have) agreed to any of this.

‘My body is not for sale.’

He spoke of his fears for his own safety and that of his family in Nigeria who had been visited and told to ‘drop’ the case.

He said: ‘I cannot think about going home to Nigeria.

‘These people are extremely powerful and I worry for my family.

‘Even though I live here in the UK at the moment I know I need to be careful too.

‘I have no-one here, no family, no friends.

‘I am having to start my life again.

‘I’m worried about my family in Nigeria but I have been told my dad had been visited and was told to drop the case in the UK.’

It is the first time anyone has been convicted under the Modern Slavery Act of an organ-harvesting conspiracy.

Scotland Yard declined to say whether more charges would be brought but said the investigation was ongoing.

Police have highlighted soaring numbers of modern slavery cases in recent years with a small number involving organ harvesting.

Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy said: ‘Human trafficking for the purpose of organ removal is relatively rare in the UK, but what we have seen since the victim’s bravery is that this is now not the only investigation of that nature taking place in London.

‘Although organ harvesting forms a very small percentage of modern slavery, human trafficking, we’re now starting to see more people coming forward.

‘The victim of this case, a very brave young man, was exploited due to his vulnerable economic circumstances, by people that were powerful, wealthy, and that exerted control and dominance over him bringing into the UK for purposes of taking his kidney.

‘Modern slavery is prevalent across all of our communities in London, be it in labour exploitation, nail bars, car washes, the sex trade industry.

‘If people are lurking in the background, controlling them, exerting some kind of dominance over people, then please just report any suspicion whatsoever.

‘It might be the straw that breaks the camel’s back and allow us to move forward with an investigation and prosecution.’

While it is lawful to donate a kidney, it becomes criminal if there is a reward of money or other material advantage.

The prosecution said the young man was offered up to £7,000 and the promise of a better life in the UK.

When the transplant bid failed, Ms Ekweremadu’s family, who own £6 million worth of property and have an address in Willesden Green, north-west London, switched to Turkey and set about finding more potential donors, the court was told.

An investigation was launched after the victim ran away from London and slept rough for days before walking into a police station more than 20 miles away in Staines in Surrey, crying and in distress.

He told police how he fled in fear for his life after overhearing a plan to take him back to Nigeria for the procedure after the transplant plan in London failed.

Further inquiries led to Ike Ekweremadu, Nigeria’s deputy Senate president, as ‘sponsor’ for the young man’s travel.

Ike and Beatrice Ekweremadu were arrested on June 21 last year as they arrived on a flight to Heathrow, stepping off the plane with 30,000 US dollars.

Examination of the defendants’ phones revealed a stream of messages detailing the progress of the failed organ transplant plan.

The defendants denied conspiracy to arrange or facilitate the travel of another person with a view to exploitation, claiming they believed the victim was acting ‘altruistically’.

Sonia Ekweremadu was cleared of wrongdoing by the jury and watched her parents being sentenced from the public gallery.

Ablakwa discloses how he funds his National Cathedral exposé

MP for North Tongu, Sam Okudzeto Ablakwa, has disclosed how he fund his National Cathedral Exposé.

North Tongu MP Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has denied reports that he is sponsored by some anti-Christ groups for his National Cathedral probes.

He said he will not even entertain such offers because Christianity is the best religion for him.

Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, May 6, Mr Ablakwa revealed that he uses part of his salaries as MP for his investigations into the controversial project.

The outspoken lawmaker thus urged Ghanaians to disregard any claims that he is being funded by certain groups for his works.

“I don’t have funding from any external sources. I just use my salary to do the work I do. I am just sacrificing a little of what I am paid to do.

“Sometimes I hear people suggest that maybe I am supported mh some anti-Christ groups. That is not true and I won’t even entertain that. I believe Christianity is the best of religions,” Mr Ablakwa said.

The former Deputy Education Minister has been serialising “bombshells” about the project following his visit to the USA.

In his latest epistle, he has brought forth evidence of some portions of the incorporation documents for the project’s fundraising, raising questions about its propriety.

In a Facebook post on May 4, Mr Ablakwa posted a series of documents to back up his claims that the project is fraught with criminal activity.

The MP’s evidence suggests that the National Cathedral of Ghana had registered a subsidiary in Washington under a different name and with different “governors” – the American term for trustees.

The Foreign Affairs Committee Ranking Member also provided some documents to claim that a deceased person’s details were used in the registration of the National Cathedral’s fundraising arm in the US.

Ablakwa alleged that a dead Hispanic’s details were used to register the American fundraising wing, which the Cathedral Secretariat described as a Special Purpose Vehicle (SP), in March 2021.

“Painstaking and unimpeachable investigations shockingly reveal that the March 2021 incorporation of the National Cathedral of Ghana and Bible Museum Foundation, Inc in Washington, D.C. was criminally executed through IDENTITY THEFT.”

Harry sat in third row with Beatrice and Eugenie for the coronation

At today’s coronation, Prince Harry was seated in the third row with Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice.

Along with his relatives, the Duke of Sussex will be seated between Princess Eugenie’s husband Jack Brooksbank and Princess Alexandra.

Working senior royals like Prince William and Kate, Prince Edward and Sophie, and their kids are given priority seating in the front row.

Harry arrived yesterday by plane from California for the coronation, but he will likely return quickly in time for his son Archie’s fourth birthday.

A royal insider told The Sun: ‘There were discussions that the seating could be arranged on line of succession.’

But the source said this would have put Harry front and centre with William and Kate because he is fifth in line to the throne.

‘Instead the decision was working royals only at the front and work back from there. Harry will be a long way from his dad,’ they confirmed.

Prince Harry is there for his dad’s big day.

Harry is expected to arrive for the coronation at 10.35am alongside other non-working royals.

On a surprise walkabout yesterday afternoon Kate revealed some insight into how they are feeling ahead of the big day.

She told royal fans outside Buckingham Palace: ‘Yeah, we’re all good. Hopefully a bit like swans — relatively calm on the outside, but paddling on the inside.’

Talking about how her children are feeling, Kate said: ‘They are really well, thank you. Excited, a bit nervous obviously with the big day ahead. They can’t wait.’

She added: ‘It’s going to be long. Are you tired? It is long hours for everybody, isn’t it? It’s a really great moment. A celebration as well. We have an early start but I think everyone has.’

At the walkabout yesterday Charles was joined by Kate and William to greet people on the packed out Mall.

Cheers erupted as the royals stepped out to ‘three cheers for the King’ and ‘God save the King’.

Buckingham Palace confirmed neither Harry or Prince Andrew will have any formal role at today’s coronation.

This morning more than 5,000 soldiers and members of the armed forces got off the train at Waterloo and marched to the coronation.

It is believed to be the biggest movement of military staff on Britain’s railways since Sir Winston Churchill’s funeral in 1965.

  • Camilla given the crown of Queen Mary

Camilla given the crown of Queen Mary

As millions of people across the world watched, Camilla was crowned Queen.

After Queen Elizabeth II passed away, she assumed the role of Consort to support her husband King Charles III’s rule.

Over the course of more than 50 years, she transitioned from romantic involvement to mistress to finally wife of the King, and the trip culminated with her being formally crowned as the country’s Queen.

In a ceremony today, Camilla was crowned with Queen Mary’s Crown, which has been reset with the Cullinan III, IV and V diamonds.

It is the first time in almost three centuries that an existing crown will be worn, as opposed to a new piece.

Camilla was also anointed in public by the Archbishop of Canterbury, in a break with tradition.

The Dean of Westminster poured oil from the ampulla into the coronation spoon, and held the spoon for the Archbishop of Canterbury.

As she was anointed the Archbishop said: ‘Be your head anointed with holy oil.

‘Almighty God, the fountain of all goodness; hear our prayer this day for thy servant Camilla, whom in thy name, and with all devotion, we consecrate our Queen.

Camilla was also anointed in public by the Archbishop of Canterbury, in a break with tradition

‘Make her strong in faith and love, defend her on every side, and guide her in truth and peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.’

This morning, the official royal website was updated to refer to Camilla as ‘the Queen’ as opposed to the Queen consort.

The coronation ceremony began at 11am, inside Westminster Abbey, and was held by the Archbishop of Canterbury.

At 12pm, King Charles was crowned with the St Edward’s Crown in a lavish ceremony.

He wore crimson robes as he arrived at Westminster Abbey, the site of every coronation for the past nine centuries.

It is tradition for the monarch to wear the solid gold St Edward’s Crown – often dubbed the centrepiece of the Crown Jewels – at the moment of coronation.

Only invited guests were able to watch the ceremony in person with footage broadcast to big screens and television across the world.

While Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation was three hours long, the coronation of King Charles is due to last until 1pm.

Up and down the UK, big screens have been placed in public parks so people can gather to watch today’s events unfold.

There are dozens of screenings taking place in every corner of England, but only two each in Wales and Scotland.

Both of the Welsh locations are in Cardiff – at the capital’s castle and its bay – while the Scottish events will take place at Glasgow Cathedral and Edinburgh’s Ross Bandstand in Princes Street Gardens.

Meanwhile in Northern Ireland, there’s capacity for 15,000 people to watch the ceremony in public across nine locations.

Those travelling across the country on public transport today will be reminded to ‘mind the gap’ by the King himself.

Charles and Camilla have recorded an announcement which is being played between Friday and Monday at every railway station across the UK and all London Underground stations, industry body the Rail Delivery Group said.

In the message, the King begins by telling passengers: ‘My wife and I wish you and your families a wonderful coronation weekend.’

Camilla then says: ‘Wherever you are travelling, we hope you have a safe and pleasant journey.’

The message concludes with Charles adding: ‘And remember, please mind the gap.’

  • Champions League theme plays at the coronation

Champions League theme plays at the coronation

It may have startled viewers of King Charles III‘s coronation to hear a song they were familiar with.

Throughout the historic ceremony, which was place in downtown London’s Westminster Abbey, there was a full choir and classical music.

However, the Champions League Anthem is a more well-known adaptation of the Coronation Anthem, Zadok the Priest.

Prior to King George II’s coronation in 1727, German composer George Frideric Handel created the song’s original melody.

It has been used at the coronation of every single British monarch since.

The song is traditionally sung just before the new sovereign is anointed, out of view, with holy oil.

And it was once again performed at King Charles and Queen Camilla’s coronation today.

Organiser Union of European Football Associations (Uefa) picked Zadok the Priest as the template piece which they felt would best fit the mood for the new Champions League.

Composer Tony Britten, who wrote the piece, told the BBC in 2020: ‘UEFA wanted this competition to be about the best of football, rather than the worst.

‘Some say the tune is nicked from Handel, but it’s not. It’s just the first writing string phrase, and the rest is me.’

But today, the real champions were Charles and Camilla who were crowned as His and Her Majesty – an event never seen before by the majority of the population.

Royal fans braved the weather to gather on The Mall and in nearby parks to cheer on the new sovereign and his queen.

Unemployment may result in terrorism -Adib Saani

Security analyst Adib Saani has said the greatest existential threat to our country’s security is unemployment.

According to him, it is part of our human vulnerability, and it has been proven to create terrorism, rebellion, criminality, and other security concerns.

He was reacting to the Ghana Statistical Service’s most recent unemployment numbers.

According to the data, unemployment has risen from 19% to more than 25%.

The reported figure revealed two-thirds of the unemployed were females.

Adib Saani, in response to the report, stated that these are concerning data that must be addressed.

According to him, we play politics with unemployment, and he doesn’t accept these stats because some of the jobs listed as jobs aren’t.

“We pretend to employ people, and they also pretend to work,” he bemoaned. Graduates from our universities, unemployed nurses, and others are all over, so when I look at these figures, I know something is wrong. These statistics are typically intended to make the government appear good. The unemployment rate is alarming. The remedy was successful, and the kikes of NABCO and others no longer had jobs.

What you should do is create an environment conducive to the growth of the private sector. Several businesses in the country are experiencing difficulties. This government vowed to shift Ghana from taxing to production, but we are currently paying historic levels of taxation.”

He called the scenario “irresponsible governance” and “unfortunate.”

“On an unprecedented scale, Ghanaians are willing to travel outside the country to seek greener pastures. Several people call me requesting to know if I could assist them travel or leave the country because the situation in Ghana is terrible. Our minimum wage is the worst in the world.”

NDC primaries: Duffuor demands full compliment of voters register

The campaign team of Dr. Kwabena Duffuor, a presidential flagbearer aspirant under the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has raised concerns over alleged anomalies in the voter register provided by the NDC Electoral Commission.

The team has called for an urgent round table discussion to address the issue and ensure a transparent and fair electoral process.

According to a press statement, the said concerns were first expressed in a letter dated April 17, 2023, wherein the campaign team requested access to the voters register, which serves as the basis for determining the eligibility of voters in the impending presidential and parliamentary primaries.

The statement added that following the said concerns, on May 2, 2023, a meeting was held at the NDC Party Headquarters, during which some information regarding the voter’s register was disclosed to Dr. Kwabena Duffour’s team.

However, upon conducting a preliminary analysis of the information provided, the campaign team discovered what they deemed to be excessive anomalies within the register. The irregularities have raised doubts about the integrity of the electoral process and the accuracy of the voter data being presented by the NDC Elections Commission.

In light of the concerns, Dr. Kwabena Duffour’s campaign team has urgently requested that the relevant stakeholders, including key actors within the party, should engage in a round table discussion to address the identified issues promptly.

The team emphasizes the importance of resolving these matters to ensure a transparent and fair election, avoiding any potential pitfalls that may have severe consequences.

“Per an earlier correspondence dated April 17, 2023, a request was made to the NDC Party Headquarters on. Tuesday, May 02, 2023, for the voters register as stipulated in the Regulations governing the upcoming elections

“As the base document that will determine the eligibility of the appropriate voters, and as per the procedures associated with our national elections, we made the request to be able to comb through and be very satisfied with the register.

“Based on the letter of May 02. 2023, a meeting was convened at the NDC Headquarters on Thursday, May 04, 2023 at which some information was given to the Dr. Kwabena Duffuor Team.

“A cursory analysis of the information given us, further confirms our concerns about excessive anomalies in what the Party is presenting to the C as the Voters Register.

“We are by this letter drawing your attention to possible legal ramifications of the actions and inactions of the NDC Elections Committee,” part of the statement read.

Charles and Camilla, the future king and queen, have departed Buckingham Palace and are making their way to Westminster Abbey, where they will be installed.

Instead, it was made to mark 60 years of her reign in 2012. The coach is more than 16 feet (five metres) long and weighs more than three tons, needing six horses to pull it.

The King’s Guard turned out the forecourt and gave a Royal Salute as The King, The Queen Consort and other Members of the Royal family also left the palace.

The trip is less than a mile, and the route will be filled with pomp and grandeur.

The 33-minute journey to Westminster Abbey began with the tri-service Guard of Honour outside Buckingham Palace’s gates giving a royal salute, as the King and Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Coach first emerged, and the national anthem was played by a military band.

Huge Union flags and others from Commonwealth nations flew from poles in The Mall and Charles and Camilla’s route was lined by guardsmen in their distinctive red tunics and bearskins.

The Sovereign’s Escort was led by the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment band, 48 horses and musicians with two drum horses Atlas and Apollo leading the way, playing eight marches along the route.

Following were four divisions from the Household Cavalry with the King’s coach in the middle – two from the Blues and Royals taking the lead and Life Guards behind the carriage with the farriers carrying their axes at the rear.

Crowds had been building up in the capital since dawn with the streets around the procession route – The Mall, Admiralty Arch, Trafalgar Square, Whitehall and Parliament Square – thronged with people.

Earlier, the King and Queen made their first appearance of coronation day when they travelled the short distance from their Clarence House home for final preparations at Buckingham Palace.

  • Countries that have ‘stopped’ using the US dollar for trade

Countries that have ‘stopped’ using the US dollar for trade

One of the strongest currencies in the world has long been the US dollar.

But in recent times, some countries have made the decision to de-dollarize.

De-dollarisation refers to countries reducing their dependence on the U.S. dollar as a reserve currency, medium of exchange, or as a unit of account.

Developed economies like China and Russia currently trade in their own currencies.

Also, Brazil has dropped the dollar in bilateral trade.

According to geopoliticaleconomy.com, the UAE is selling China its gas in yuan through a French company.

On the other hand, Southeast Asian nations in ASEAN are de-dollarizing their trade and promoting local payment systems.

Currently, an African country, Kenya, is buying Persian Gulf oil with its own currency.

With Ghana in perspective, how long could it take for Ghana to follow this path?

Ghana’s current economic crisis is largely due to the fact that it has been shut out of the international capital market.

This means that the inflow of foreign currency, especially the dollar, has reduced significantly. The government has, however, been relying heavily on Treasury bills.

De-dollarization could be a solution to the depreciation of Ghana’s currency in the long run.

This is because trading in one’s own currency reduces one’s exposure to currency risks and external global shocks.

‘Ignorant allegations’ -Lawyer slams GAF over caution on use of military rank

Former Captain of the Ghana Armed Forces, lawyer Jamaldeen Tonzua Seidu has denied allegations made by the Ghana Armed Forces, stating that he has never used his military rank in his civilian life.

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) recently cautioned him via a press statement against presenting himself as a retired captain or ex-captain of the army.

The GAF stated that they had noticed the unauthorized use of military rank by the lawyer, who had been referring to himself as “Captain Retired” or “Ex-Captain” in relation to his political ambitions and media appearances.

However, in a press statement, the lawyer explained that “The statement falsely and misguidedly alleges that I have used my military rank in my civilian life. Under the circumstances, I am compelled to issue this public statement to deny the uninformed, misguided, and ignorance-laden allegation of the Ghana Armed Forces that I have used my military rank in media appearances. I have not, on any occasion, whether public or private, addressed myself or caused myself to be introduced as Captain Jamal Tonzua,” 3news.com quoted the lawyer to have said.

He further expressed his concern about the GAF’s disclosure of private information regarding his period of service, deeming it a flagrant violation of the law that should not be repeated.

He added that his dedication to strengthening the democratic control, accountability, and integrity of the Ghana Armed Forces remains his priority.

Why is Prince Harry not in a regal robe or military uniform at the coronation?

The King and Queen have arrived at Westminster Abbey for King Charles III’s coronation after leaving Buckingham Palace.

Members of the Royal Family, including Anne, Princess Royal, and Prince Edward, the recently anointed Duke of Edinburgh, took their seats before to their arrival.

While several royals were dressed in traditional regalia, Prince Harry was wearing a regular suit.

    So, why is this?

Why isn’t Prince Harry wearing a military uniform today?

Prince Harry now wears civilian dress at official events – such as the morning suit he is wearing at today’s coronation.

It is tradition for working royals to wear military attire at relevant events – like what Prince Edward and Princess Anne were wearing.

However, The Duke of Sussex is no longer a working member of the Royal Family.

Harry and wife Meghan, The Duchess of Sussex famously left ‘The Firm’ in 2020 in a split dubbed ‘Megxit.’ They quit their duties as working royals and moved to California, followed by a series of public tiffs with the Royal Family, including allegations of racism made in the Oprah Winfrey interview and Harry’s bombshell memoir, Spare.

They no longer work on behalf of the monarch or hold royal patronages.

Harry is still allowed to wear medals he earned during his time in the military.

Suspects in Tarkwa robbery remanded for three weeks

Three suspects standing trial at the Tarkwa Circuit Court for robbery have been remanded into police custody for three weeks.

The suspects allegedly robbed the KK Gold Buying Shop at Akoon in the Tarkwa-Nsuaem Municipality, of money and gold worth about GH¢613,000.00.

They were remanded after their first appearance in court on Wednesday, May 3, 2023, charged with conspiracy and robbery.

The pleas of Fataw Awudu, 42, Ghanaian; Samuel Amaechi Kingsley, 47, Togolese; and Ezekiel Stephen Oghenakaro, 45, Nigerian were, however, not taken.

They are expected to reappear before the court, presided over by Hathie Ama Manu, on May 24, for the commencement of prosecution.

On April 18, 2023, the Tarkwa police received information that a gang of armed robbers on three motorbikes, welding weapons, had attacked and robbed a gold-buying shop.

The police proceeded to the scene but, on arrival, released that the robbers had fled with a sack containing money and gold worth about GH¢613,000.00.

Intelligence gathered by the police revealed that the robbers used the Esuoso road and, therefore, mobilised some more police officers to assist in arresting them.

The robbers, on seeing the police, started firing at them and they returned fire, but sensing danger, the robbers abandoned their motorbikes and the sack containing the money and absconded.

The Police Intelligence Department and the patrol team, with the support of some community members, arrested all the suspects.

The sack containing a cash amount of GH¢397,190.00 and the three motorbikes have since been retrieved by the police.

The investigation is still ongoing to apprehend the accomplices of the suspects believed to have escaped with over 100 pounds of gold.

In order to participate in the coronation, thousands of soldiers and other military personnel hopped off trains at Waterloo this morning.

This morning, more than 5,000 people rode trains to the capital in what is thought to be the largest military staff transfer on British rails since Sir Winston Churchill’s burial in 1965.

Seven South Western Railway trains, two chartered West Coast Railways trains, and personnel from the Royal Navy, Army, Royal Air Force, and Commonwealth troops were utilised for the trip.

The soldiers, sailors and aviators arrived to the sound of a special announcement recorded by the King and Queen, which is being played at stations across Britain this weekend.

Malaria on the rise in Upper Denkyira East due to galamsey

Malaria cases in the Upper Denkyira East Municipality is on the rise due to the activities of illegal miners within the area.

According to reports, uncovered pits of illegal miners are spreading mosquitoes within the area; a situation which has resulted in the high numbers of malaria cases recorded in the area.

The canker if not halted or reduced would continually threaten resident lives which tend to affect the economy and development of the country.

The Municipality has over the past three years recorded increased cases of malaria due to galamsey pits left uncovered, serving as breeding grounds for mosquitoes.

In 2022, it recorded a total of 32,741 malaria cases as compared to 31,150 recorded in 2021. The number represents increased cases of 1,591 recorded and raises alarm as the country still fights illegal mining.

The Municipality in 2020 recorded 28,943 cases meaning, malaria cases had not reduced over the last few years in the area.

Joshua Bediako Mensah, the Municipal Health Information Officer told Ghanaweb that as the cases looked scary, the Directorate was working tirelessly to help reduce the menace.

He said the refusal to use treated nets, and bushes within the area among other factors were contributors to the increased number.

Also, uncovered drainage systems, poor sanitation and the environment within some communities create breeding places for mosquitoes. Thus, the spread of the disease leads to a high number of persons affected by malaria yearly.

Mensah called on stakeholders to join the fight against galamsey to help achieve the zero malaria target in the country.

The Directorate was engaging residents on regular use of the treated nets, and clearance of various drainage systems to support in that regard.

Additionally, spraying of nearby bushes, pits and radio education was ongoing to get residents informed on the need to ensure a clear and healthy environment.

The Information Officer urged the public especially pregnant women to take their health seriously in order to keep themselves and their unborn babies safe from malaria.

  • The revised royal family website refers to Camilla as ‘Queen’

The revised royal family website refers to Camilla as ‘Queen’

Prior to Camilla’s coronation, the royal family revised her position title on its website.

She will henceforth be referred to as the “Queen,” dropping the “Queen Consort” moniker.

On her way to being crowned at Westminster Abbey in a historic ceremony is Camilla, who served as the Duchess of Cornwall when Charles was the Prince of Wales.

It was the late Queen Elizabeth II’s “sincere wish” that Camilla would be Charles‘ queen consort when he became king, she said at her Platinum Jubilee.

Camilla’s future title was previously unclear, as she was not called a princess due to Charles’s divorce from Diana, Princess of Wales, who died in 1997.

Experts at the time branded Elizabeth’s message ‘extraordinary’ and said it showed her determination to ‘future-proof’ a monarchy spent 70 years serving.

Despite her title of ‘Queen’, Camilla will never be a reigning queen like Elizabeth II was.

Queen Camilla has no ruling power and is simply the wife of King Charles (Picture: Getty Images)

Camilla is not a monarch and is instead a queen consort, which is the name given to a wife of a king.

They have no ruling power as they are not blood relatives, and their role is merely to provide support to the monarch.

The queen consort title is given to wives of ruling kings, but in this country the husbands of ruling queens are known as prince consorts rather than kings.

This is because the title of queen is generally considered to be lower in rank than king, which can only ever refer to a reigning monarch. But ‘queen’ can refer either to either a female monarch, or the wife of the king.

Coronation of King Charles III latest

Therefore Prince Philip was known as prince consort so he didn’t outrank her position as queen. He is so far the longest-serving royal consort in history.

As a result of this, Camilla will be mostly known as just Queen Camilla from now onwards, in the same way as Philip was known simply as Prince Philip.

She was previously carefully referred to as Queen Consort Camilla, likely out of respect to the late Queen Elizabeth II and also a nod to the legacy of Diana.

Former BBC royal correspondent Peter Hunt previously said it was all ‘semantics’.

He said: ‘Despite all of the progress so far, royal officials – perhaps mindful of the Diana legacy – continue to be cautious about the precise nature of Camilla’s new status.

‘They prefer to focus on the fact she’s the consort of a king. The reality is that… Queen Camilla will be crowned at her husband’s coronation.’

Black Sherif will win the VGMA Artiste of the Year award – Bullgod

Bullgod has predicted that Black Sherif will win Artiste of the Year at the upcoming Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA).

Speaking in an interview with TV3 New Day, Bullgod expressed his admiration for Black Sherif’s talent and his belief that the young artiste’s music transcends borders and appeals to a global audience.

“This year if you look at what our people in the world have done as in the Black Sherifs and Stonebwoys, we will not allow any gospel artiste to win AOTY, I support Black Sherif to win AOTY. I love Piesie Esther, and there are other artistes in the category I equally love, but I tip Black Sherif to win,” he said.

Bullgod’s prediction comes at a time when many music fans are eagerly anticipating this year’s VGMA awards. The Artiste of the Year category is one of the most hotly contested, and this year promises to be no exception.

Black Sherif will be up against some of Ghana’s most popular artistes, including Sarkodie, Stonebwoy, Piesie Esther, Joe Mettle, Kidi, King Promise, and Camidoh.

Despite the tough competition, Bullgod is confident that Black Sherif has what it takes to win.

“What is yours is yours, so don’t fight for it. As for me, I belong to the world,” he added.

Chief of anti-monarchy detained during protest against coronation

In advance of the Coronation, the leader of the anti-monarchist Republic campaign was detained during a demonstration in Trafalgar Square.

Graham Smith, the CEO of Republic, may be seen being held together with other demonstrators wearing ‘Not My King’ t-shirts in video.

According to the group, police detained six protestors, including Mr. Smith, as they unloaded placards close to the route of the Coronation parade.

Republic posted photos of officers taking details from them on Twitter.

“So much for the right to peaceful protest,” the group said, adding the officers would not give the reasons for their arrest and confirmed their CEO was among them.

Matt Turnbull, one of those arrested, said the straps holding the placards had been “misconstrued” as something that could be used for locking on.

“To be honest we were never going to be allowed to be a visible force here – they knew we were coming, and they were going to find a way to stop this,” he told the BBC.

The BBC later saw Mr Turnbull being led away in handcuffs.

The Metropolitan Police has been approached for comment but has not confirmed the number of those detained.

New legislation passed this week made it illegal to prepare to lock-on to things like street furniture.

On Wednesday, the Metropolitan Police said they would have an “extremely low threshold” for protests during coronation celebrations, adding that demonstrators should expect “swift action”.

Anti-monarchy group Republic's chief arrested at Coronation protest

Republic said hundreds of their placards had been seized and questioned: “Is this democracy?”

“Some ask why we’re protesting. It’s because we want to use the coronation to change the debate about the monarchy and show that we’re not a nation of royalists,” the campaign group wrote.

The number of people at the anti-monarchy protest near Trafalgar Square in central London is growing, with the crowds bursting into chants of “Not my King” and “Free Graham Smith”.

The protest has been arranged near the route of the Coronation procession, where thousands have gathered to watch the procession from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Abbey ahead of the ceremony this afternoon.

Around 13 Just Stop Oil protesters appear to have been been arrested on the Mall, with a large group from the climate change campaign group seen in handcuffs.

Just Stop Oil has said five demonstrators were also arrested at Downing Street.

A spokeswoman for the group said their plan was “only to display T-shirts and flags”, adding: “This is a dystopian nightmare.”

Non-profit campaign group Human Rights Watch said the arrests were “something you would expect to see in Moscow not London”.

“The reports of people being arrested for peacefully protesting the coronation are incredibly alarming”, its UK director Yasmine Ahmed said in a statement.

  • No gospel artiste will win the VGMA Artiste of the Year – Bullgod

No gospel artiste will win the VGMA Artiste of the Year – Bullgod

A gospel musician won’t win the Vodafone Ghana Music Award (VGMA) Artiste of Year this year, according to Lawrence Nana Asiamah Hanson, better known as Bullgod, a Ghanaian entertainment expert and artist manager. This prediction has sparked controversy.

His prediction comes amidst a massive campaign for Piesie Esther to claim the top prize on Saturday night.

Speaking on TV3’s New Day, Bullgod argued that a secular artiste deserves to win the award this year, and no matter how hard the campaign for gospel musicians is, it won’t make a difference.

He believes that Stonebwoy or Black Sherif will emerge as the winner.

“This year, if you look at the works of Stonebwoy, Black Sherif, we will not allow any gospel artiste to win. The Church of Pentecost, Church of Presby, and Anglican can all join they will not win.

“We are with the world, and everyone in the world is with Lucifer. This is Lucifer against God, and God understands that we will win,” he added.

Bullgod’s comments have sparked a debate on social media, with many gospel music fans expressing their disappointment with his prediction.

Some have accused him of being biased against gospel musicians and lacking appreciation for their talent.

Despite the controversy, the annual Vodafone Ghana Music Awards ceremony will take place on May 6th, 2023, at the Grand Arena of the Accra International Conference Centre.

The Artiste of the Year award nominees include Stonebwoy, King Promise, Camidoh, Kidi, Sarkodie, Joe Mettle, Piesie Esther, and Black Sherif.

Warring factions in Sudan scheduled to meet in Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia is to host the first face-to-face talks on Saturday between the warring armies in Sudan, after several ceasefires broke down.

A joint US-Saudi statement welcomed the start of “pre-negotiation talks” in Jeddah between the Sudanese army and paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). On Friday reports spoke of continuing clashes in Khartoum.

The Sudanese army says the talks aim to address humanitarian issues.

There has been no official RSF comment.

The army confirmed it had sent envoys to Jeddah to engage in the talks, which the UN and aid agencies have been pressing for, faced with a dire humanitarian crisis in Sudan.

Nearly three weeks of heavy fighting have killed hundreds of people and displaced nearly 450,000 civilians. Of that total, the International Organization for Migration says, more than 115,000 have sought refuge in neighbouring countries.

Map showing Darfur in Sudan and the surrounding countries

Sudan’s army commander Gen Abdel Fattah al-Burhan – the de facto Sudanese president – is engaged in a bitter power struggle with RSF leader Gen Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, better known as Hemedti.

The statement from the US and Saudi governments said they “urge both parties to take in consideration the interests of the Sudanese nation and its people and actively engage in the talks towards a ceasefire and end to the conflict, which will spare the Sudanese people’s suffering and ensure the availability of humanitarian aid to affected areas”.

The joint statement also expressed hope for “an expanded negotiation process that should include engagement with all Sudanese parties”.

A Unicef spokesman, James Elder, said the conflict’s first 11 days alone had killed an estimated 190 children and wounded 1,700 – and those figures were just from health facilities in Khartoum and Darfur. “The reality is likely to be much worse,” he said.

The intensity of the fighting has prevented much-needed aid deliveries getting through.

So far Gen Burhan and Hemedti, who led an Arab militia in the brutal Darfur conflict, have shown little readiness to reach a peace settlement.

Charles appears relieved as pen continues to work on his big day

King Charles signed the oaths at his coronation without incident, and he appeared genuinely relieved when he did so.

The king made headlines in September of last year when he attempted to sign a guest book at Hillsborough Castle, which is close to Belfast, but his pen wouldn’t write.

After the pen he was using leaked on him in front of the cameras, King Charles reacted angrily.

Thankfully, his fountain pen continues to function normally, saving the day of his coronation from being ruined by such a stationery disaster.

But it seems Charles was having trouble screwing the lid back onto his pen, appearing to grimace after signing the oath.

The King, who is known to carry his own fountain pen for when he is frequently called on to sign visitors’ books during royal visits, grimaced when he screwed the top back on the pen.

Queen Camilla appeared to smirk at her husband’s stationery difficulties.

As he took the oath, the King said: ‘I, Charles, do solemnly and sincerely in the presence of God profess, testify, and declare that I am a faithful Protestant, and that I will, according to the true intent of the enactments which secure the Protestant succession to the throne, uphold and maintain the said enactments to the best of my powers according to law.’

He then signed copies of the oaths, presented by the Lord Chamberlain, while the choir sang.

Speaking during the pen mishap last year he said ‘Oh god I hate this (pen)!’ while standing up and handing the pen to his wife, Camilla.

‘Oh look, it’s going everywhere,’ Camilla replied as her husband wiped his fingers.

‘I can’t bear this bloody thing… every stinking time,” Charles said as he walked away.

Coronation of King Charles III latest

When completing the documents he also used the wrong date, before checking with an aide who told him it was September 13 and not September 12.

When he signed documents during his first Privy Council meeting in September, Charles was criticised on social media when he gestured for an ornate pen holder to be taken away by an aide.

Later it was back in place, after privy councillors used its pens to sign documents, but Charles once again took offence to the item, when called upon to give his signature, and pulled a face before it was removed again.
