UPSA sacks lady in viral video whipping fellow students

The disciplinary committee established by the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) tasked to look into a case involving a lady perceived to be a student of the institution who was caught on camera flogging other students has completed its work.

Following the findings of the committee, the student has been dismissed from the school.

In the video posted on social media earlier this month, Mabel Teye-Nomo was seen in the hallway of the school’s hostel hurling insults at the much younger victim while assaulting her with a cane at the UPSA Hostel.

Netizens alleged that the victim was being punished by the ‘senior’ for spreading rumours about her.

She was sighted in another video whipping the palm of another student in a hostel room.

On April 5, the school set up a disciplinary committee to probe the incident following an uproar.

Two weeks down the line, the committee has finished its work and recommended Mabel’s dismissal from the CIMG Access Course as her actions contravene the school’s regulations.

In a fresh statement signed by UPSA’s Registrar, Dr Koryoe Anim-Wright, the Vice Chancellor has ordered for her to also “hand over your keys to the hostel room and the University’s student ID card.”

Medikal warns Eno Barony to take him out of their beef

The beef between former VGMAs Rapper of the Year winner Medikal and Eno Barony, unquestionably Africa’s best female rapper, has taken a new turn.

In a previous interview with Andy Dosty on Hitz FM, Medikal apparently had some goodwill for Eno Barony despite their disagreement. Barony’s skill and rap prowess was lauded by Medikal, who said that she was superior to many male rappers in the field.

“You no sey Eno Barony dey rap? I dey drive wey I dey listen one of her songs on the radio, her verse was dope. For a female rapper, she is very dope. She dey rap pass plenty of the male rappers in Ghana apart from me,” Medikal said in Pidgin English.

He then proceeded to say that he cannot be compared to other rappers because he is in a different league.

“You know sey me I dey my zone. I dey do my things different. You no go fit pair me plus any other rapper. I will be the judge. You for put me then am for one song top I go show sey women empowerment no dey work for my top. I go lash am,” he said.

    However, Barony presumably misunderstood what he said and responded angrily, which prompted Medikal to respond back with a sarcastic remark. Those were Barony’s exact words;

“I think I heard what he said. He said I rap better than most male rappers except him. I think Medikal is a dope rapper and he raps better than most of the female rappers except me.

People dream. Sometimes it is good to wake people up so that they know that some dreams don’t come true.”

    To this end, Medikal told Pulse Ghana that he believes his colleague is confused;

“I think Eno is confused, she does not want to understand that she is a female and I am a male. What I said about her was a big up to her that she can rap but she took it in a wrong way. She should never in her subconscious think that she can come up against me in rap, she should stop the cap. She is dope but she should stay in her lane. Some things are for big men only, big man things”, he said.

You are not in love if your boyfriend doesn’t slap you once in a while – lady insists

A young woman who said that domestic violence is a sign of being in a committed relationship sparked debate on social media.

The woman claimed that being physically abused by a lover is evidence of his deep commitment and connection to them in a viral video that went viral on the internet.

She asserts that physical violence, such as slapping and beating, is only a proof of a guy’s intense affections for his girlfriend. If a man does not act aggressively in response, she believes that he is not truly dedicated to her.

She went on to suggest that if a man does not beat or slap his woman when provoked, then the woman should consider herself a side chick, and her actions have no impact on him.

“If your boyfriend doesn’t beat or slap you when you provoke him, my dear sister, you’re the side chick. Nothing you do hurts him. I come in peace; please don’t drag me,”  She said.

Former Wassa East MP has been mining in Subri forest for years – Prof Frimpong-Boateng

Former Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Prof Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, has disclosed that some astute Members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) including a former Deputy Minister and MP for the Wassa East constituency, are into illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

He said these persons are mostly financiers of the party as well as financiers of independent candidates.

In a latest report released by the former Minister who was then Chairman of the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining, he noted that “it is well known in the small scale mining circles that NDC members and sympathisers were well established in small scale mining, especially in the Western Region.”

“They acquired several concessions in mineral-rich areas during the long periods of NDC reign. They had the money and other resources to not only sponsor NDC candidates but also support independent candidates in the supposedly strongholds of the NPP. This is what happened in Evalue Dwira and Tarkwa constituencies,” he said.

He cited for instance that “in the Wassa East District, a former NDC Deputy Minister who is also MP for the Wassa East constituency [Isaac Adjei Mensah] has been actively mining in the Subri forest for years.”

“When NPP party officials complained and the army component of Operation Vanguard was withdrawn almost two years to the 2020 elections, the NDC was given an advantage in terms of access to resources from mining. This is because there are far more NDC people engaged in illegal mining than NPP members in the region,” he added.

The document dubbed “Report on the work of the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining (IMCIM)” made captivating revelations about the (gold) mining industry, especially persons involved in illegal mining and the works and gains chalked by the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining (IMCIM) during the Professor’s tenure as the chairman.

The 37-page report byformer Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng has revealed that some New Patriotic Party (NPP) officials at Jubilee House are engaged in small-scale unlawful mining (galamsey).

According to him, these individuals prevented him from addressing the issue, as well as the committee he headed.

I have the support of Asantewaa’s husband – Manager reveals

The husband of Ghanaian TikToker and influencer, Asantewaa, played a vital role in his wife’s partnership with her current manager, Cassious.

The man, who has been credited for grooming and directing Asantewaa’s videos, has been the talk of the town following rumours of his alleged affair with his talent.

Cassious has refuted such claims and made some revelations about his relationship with Asantewaa’s husband.

In an interview with Kwaku Manu on the Aggressive Show in April 2023, the talent manager disclosed that he has the full support of Asantewaa’s husband who sometimes is behind the cameras of their viral videos.

“People will talk about the content because they are humans but that shouldn’t stop you… the only problem I had at that time was her husband and he was behind it. He didn’t have any problem, he was in support. Sometimes you guys should imagine who is behind the camera when we’re pictured together,” he said.

Cassious again hammered on the disadvantages of working with talents who are married. On his account, he no longer wishes to sign a talent who is in a committed relationship for fear of being tagged as a home breaker.

“Asantewaa’s husband was in full support of me signing her and for me, I don’t work with married women. There are a lot of challenges. Asantewaa is the first and only married woman I work with. I went through problems working with stars who are married. This happens when their husbands don’t understand the nature of the work,” he explained.

Ghana’s access to capital markets could take three or more years – Ofori-Atta

Ghana’s Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta has announced that it would take a while for the country to return to the international capital market. According to him, it may take at least three or more years.

Ken Ofori-Atta explained that, although this new development may look like a challenge, it presents the country with a viable opportunity to attain its self-sufficiency agenda.

“In terms of returning to the international capital market, I suspect it will take some two-three years or so if not more for us to get back to it. I think in the interim we should be able to generate local resources to do that. But I think what is also significant about the programme if you look at the Ghana Cares programme it is our policy to be self-sufficient in poultry, rice, tomatoes etc. which we’ve begun to do so that will reduce your foreign exchange demands and actually hopefully begin to export those products,” Ken Ofori-Atta made this known in an engagement with the media on the sideline of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Spring meeting in Washington DC.

Reacting to assurance from the Fund on the higher possibility of Ghana securing the $3 billion loan bailout, Ken Ofori-Atta explained that, these assurances give evidence of the hard work and efforts by the government to ensure that there is a positive closure to the IMF deal as soon as possible.

He explained that “We have worked hard as a country to get here and we have stuck to it through the difficult times as you know, especially through the debt exchange programme and I think the world recognizes that we are prepared to take responsibility and share in the burden of what we have to do. But still, clearly, I believe God’s favour is on the country and it’s really up to us to work hard so that we can get through this programme”.

Ghana is likely to receive the International Monetary Fund‘s (IMF) Board approval for a $3 billion bailout by the close of May 2023.

When asked about the process it took to get the album done, Davido said; “Was the process of narrowing down the songs from 62 to the songs that’ll make the album that difficult?

Sir John had a Chinese gang operating on his behalf – Prof Frimpong – Boateng

Former Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Prof Frimpong Boateng, has disclosed that former Forestry Commission boss, Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie, popularly known as Sir John was involved in galamsey.

According to the Professor, the late Sir John had a Chinese gang operating on his behalf.

Blowing the cover of ‘bigwigs’ who were involved in galamsey during his tenure as Minister, Prof Frimpong-Boateng who doubled as the chairman of the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining (IMCIM), said Sir John “gave forestry entry permits to mining companies, both large and small scale, including those of foreign nationals for prospecting activities at a time when the President had put a ban on that activity.”

He said this could be a reason why the Forestry Commission never migrated onto the GalamStop Platform.

“Through Charles Owusu, the Director of Operations at the Forestry Commission, Sir John had Chinese gangs doing mining on his behalf,” he added.

Prof Frimpong-Boateng further disclosed that Mr. Kwadwo Owusu Afrivie (aka Sir John) was actively giving out timber concessions, even in forest reserves for logging.”

“The issue about rose wood exploitation is something that is beyond the scope of this report. I remember that at a meeting in the conference room of the President, I told the President in the presence of Sir John that the greatest danger to the forests of Ghana was Sir John,” he added.

Some Alhajis, mallams feed my son and I – Akuapem Poloo reveals

Ghanaian actress and social media personality, Akuapem Poloo, has recently shared her positive experiences with the Muslim community since her conversion to Islam.

In an interview with blogger Zionfelix, she expressed that she has been receiving help from prominent people in the Muslim community.

Poloo emphasized that she hasn’t been receiving help because of her fame, but because Muslims are known for their kindness and generosity.

“Since coming into Islam, it has been good for me from meeting big Alhajis and Mallams who have given me money to feed myself and my son. It’s not because I am Akuapem Poloo,” she said.

She also revealed that her sister, who also converted to Islam, has been treated even better than her by the Muslim community.

“I didn’t convert alone, my sister too converted, and the way they are treating her, they are treating her better than me,” she shared.

Poloo spoke about the Muslim community’s strong sense of loyalty and commitment to keeping converts within the faith.

“With the Islam religion, someone is able to convert from any other religion to theirs, and they don’t want you to go back, and they do not want to hear any bad news about their religion,” she explained.

She also shared that the Muslim community’s desire to keep converts within the faith is demonstrated through their generosity and support.

“Because they don’t want me to go back to my own life, they gave me things to cover myself. They give me food, and it’s a lot,” she said.

  • Ghanaians never support artistes but are quick to talk down on them – Kumi Guitar

Ghanaians never support artistes but are quick to talk down on them – Kumi Guitar

Highlife artiste, Kumi Guitar, has voiced his opinion on why Ghanaian musicians and creatives are unable to maintain their relevance in the industry for an extended period of time.

In a Graphic Showbiz report, Kumi Guitar argued that Ghanaians lack the zeal to support artistes and are rather quick to talk down on their creativity.

He said, “We don’t cherish our own. In other parts of the world, talents are treasured and held in high esteem because they want the rest of the world to know they have valuable creatives, and that is why most times, these people feel they are better than us and continue to stay relevant for a long time.”

Kumi Guitar further explained that the reason why artists in Ghana lose popularity over time is not that they are not working hard, but rather because the system and Ghanaians do not appreciate their talents.

He also highlighted that a Nigerian would never choose a Ghanaian musician over their own, while Ghanaians often choose others over their own, contributing to why Nigerian artists are always winning and making it big time.

He also compared how Nigerians protect their own, stating, “In Nigeria, if you talk about 2Face in a bad way, they will come after you, but here in Ghana, we have the likes of Agya Koo Nimo and other veterans, but we hardly mention and appreciate them.”

Kumi Guitar pleaded with relevant parties to put in place support structures to recognise the work and provide some help for veteran creatives who have paid their dues to the creative sphere but are no longer actively engaged.

Kumi Guitar also expressed concern over how certain musicians were inventing their genre and calling it Afrobeats Highlife.

He believes this would only spell doom for Ghana’s highlife music.

“What we are hearing lately is what some artistes call Afrobeats Highlife, and it’s even laughable. What are we trying to do to our highlife genre? We can’t take such a move. No! If we do, in the near future, the next generation may not even know anything about the real Ghanaian highlife. Our pacesetters defined highlife well and we must do all we can to preserve it for future generations,” he said.

Kumi Guitar, who has been off the music scene for some time, intends to make a comeback with a single for his fans and music enthusiasts by the end of this month

GIPC urges MDAs to assist investor companies

The Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC) has urged Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to support domestic and foreign investors to create jobs and promote socio-economic growth.

Mr Edward Ashong-Lartey, Director, GIPC, said the MDAs had a responsibility to provide the needed services and facilitations for businesses to make Ghana Africa’s foremost investment destination.

“We urge MDAs to provide the necessary support to incumbents, the companies that risk their capital to come to Ghana to build industries,” he said.

Mr Ashong-Lartey said this at an investor forum for MDAs, investors and other key stakeholders on the theme: “The Contribution of MDAs towards making Ghana an Attractive Investment Location.”

The Forum was to deepen the collaborative efforts made over the years and deal with the bureaucratic bottlenecks that stalled activities and progress of businesses.

He said GIPC’s Aftercare division aimed at strengthening its relationship with the private sector and MDAs to demonstrate the positive impact of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) on Ghana’s economy.

“This can only be achieved with the support of our focal persons across various ministries, departments, and agencies. We will introduce reforms to streamline licensing, regulatory clearances, and advocate against anti-competitive policies across government,” Mr Ashong-Lartey said.

GIPC’s objectives had been anchored on the Government’s flagship initiative, Obaatan Pa (“Ghana CARES”) programme, which has an investment target of between US$ 3-4 billion annually from 2022 to 2025.

Mr Wisdom Abodakpi, Chief Country Officer, CycleFarms, whose investments are in the area of fishfeed, said there was an investor communication gap between investors and ministries, departments, and agencies on processes, documentations and other engagements.

“We sometimes feel we are alone, information accessibility is very difficult. It is tough for us in agribusiness when it comes to tax exemptions. We need to continue working to close the gaps,” he said.

Mr Andrea Ghia, a Member of the European Chamber of Commerce, said though Ghana’s digitisation drive had upscaled business, comprehensive data on sectors of businesses was difficult to come by, a bane that could discourage foreign investors.

“The collection of data is still a big issue in this country. This is a common problem in West Africa. I tell my people to come and stay for six months to understand how to do their business, ” he said.

Mr Ghia also said: “You do your business plan, you think you will be exempted from duty on import then they remove the exemption and your business plan doesn’t work. What makes the environment friendly for them is to have stability.”

JHS students “wow” the President as they display road safety innovation at Jubilee House

“This is the most unusual afternoon for me. A lot of people come here but I don’t think any of them has ever done what I have seen.

“I can only say I am astonished and delighted at what is taking place here. I want to congratulate you. You have come and illuminated my day today.”

These were the words of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo when students of the Uaddara Junior High School (JHS) in Kumasi presented an electronic road safety device they have assembled to him at the Jubilee House yesterday.

A six-member all-female team of the school developed the device known as “Illuminated Child Safety Device”, which is intended to boost efforts to reduce accidents involving pedestrians.

    Best award

It is the product of a desperate concern over the students’ own safety and a combination of ingenuity and craft, which won the school the Overall Best Award at the Ghana Science and Technology Explorer Prize (G-STEP) in Accra recently.

The Uaddara JHS took home a plaque and GH¢80,000 to be used for STEM equipment and materials.

The team was led by Priscilla Appiah, and has Akua Acheampomaa Appau, Comfort Boampomaa Essel, Pricilla Osei Tutu, Princess Helen Korankye Agyemang and Persis Oppong Agyemang as the other members.

The device is a system with an alarm that draws the attention of oncoming vehicles, while the pedestrian uses a detachable panel to cross the road.
The disability-friendly panel has a “stop” light button which switches on at night.

The eight-feet tall device, according to the developers, was invented to solve road accidents involving pedestrian pupils, who were knocked down by speeding vehicles on their way to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.

    Consider adopting device

After watching the students demonstrate the workings of the device, President Akufo-Addo asked the ministries of Roads and Highways and Transport to consider adopting it to help reduce road accidents in the country.

The President said although the intention of the pupils was to find a mechanism for reducing accidents in their locality, they had, in doing so, developed a mechanism that could help reduce road crashes across the nation.

President Akufo-Addo described the girls as the “next Einsteins”, emphasising that their work was an inspiration to their generation and stressed the need to work towards ensuring that the education offered to young people reflected the 21st century.

He said the current education system was science and technology-focused, explaining that the most extraordinary success story so far in the 21st century was the economy of China, which had 40 per cent of its students in tertiary learning institutions engaged in engineering and science.

President Akufo-Addo said these were the statistics the country was trying to achieve through the investment into Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) in order to transform the country. He urged the students to study even harder to become the greatest inventors.

President Akufo-Addo made an undisclosed cash donation to the students.

    Inspiration

The Headmistress of the school, Theresa Achiamaa, said the team who invented the device was the inspiration and backbone of the school.

She urged the students to work even harder as they pursued their academic dreams.

    Support

The Deputy Minister of Education, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, said the G-STEP competition was in line with the government’s agenda to ensure the practical expression of STEM policy that would bring out the creative abilities and innovative wits of young ones.

He said the competition attracted entries that sought to address issues in areas that included health, education, industry, water and electricity.

In all, 50 out 622 prototypes made it to the final, with the Uaddara JHS winning the ultimate prize.

Rev. Fordjour said the competition was an indication that the reinvigoration of STEM education was possible to turn around the fortunes of the country.

The bodies were exhumed from the royal cemetery in the community after it was reportedly sold to an investor by Okyenhene Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin to be used for the construction of a fuel station.

The Suhum District Police Command in the Eastern Region on Thursday, April 20, 2023 stormed Amanase Chief’s Palace to retrieve skeletons of exhumed human bodies kept at the palace.

While one of the fresh corpses have been reburied, the other has been kept at the Suhum Government Hospital morgue.

However, the Gyaasehene of Amanase, Obenfo Addo Agyekum who doubles as Acting Chief of the community decided to keep the exhumed skeletons of late chiefs of the community in a room at the palace.

This created uproar in recent times among some royal family members and residents.

Police invited the chief to write his statement about the incident in Thursday.

Subsequently, the Police CID stormed the palace to evacuate the skeletons to the morgue after minutes of back and forth with the Gyaasehene and some of his sub chiefs.

Obenfo Addo Agyekum however told Starr News, “the cemetery has been sold to an investor as a result we have to exhume the bodies. So Okyenhene Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin himself ordered that the bodies be exhumed to enable the investor develop the land so we held a community durbar, invited everybody including pastors, opinion leaders to discuss the matter”.

He continued that “So after exhuming the bodies we realized we have to create a new royal cemetery to rebury skeletons of the late Chiefs. We tried several times to get earmarked land for that purpose but were unsuccessful so we decide to keep the skeletons in a room here at the palace until we get cemetery to rebury them. We had two fresh bodies which we sent to Suhum government hospital but we managed to bury one, the other body is still at the morgue”.

At the time of filing this story, the Chief was still at the Suhum Police CID for further interrogation.

Nigeria actor accuses GH ‘Tik Toker’ for stealing photoshoot idea from him

TV Host and actor, Uti Nwachukwu has reacted to Ghanaian Tiktoker, Wesley Kesse’s remake of his 40th viral birthday photoshoot concept.

He made this known on his Instagram page earlier today where he called out the Tiktoker, stating that though he finds it funny considering it wasn’t his sweat to create the concept, his photographer who came up with the concept and gifted him the idea for his 40th was livid.

While Uti considers it normal for people to draw out inspiration from other people’s work, the actor stated that the Ghanaian Tiktoker and his team should have reached out to his creative team, or simply acknowledged the true creator of the concept.

He went ahead to state that better needs to be done in the creative space, stating that first before others can respect us, we need to respect ourselves.

Uti concluded his rage with making mockery of Wesley’s photoshoot, revealing it isn’t as neat and good as his— making jest of the Ghana’s way of speaking ‘come’, Uti wrote ‘kam’

  • Major Mahama died while protecting mining concession – Frimpong-Boateng

Major Mahama died while protecting mining concession – Frimpong-Boateng

A report on the work of the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining (IMCIM) has revealed that Major Maxwell Adam Mahama died while protecting a mining concession in Denkyira Obuasi.

According to the report, he had been deployed to protect a mining concession belonging to C&J Aleska, a mining company owned by Donald Entsuah and a Canadian national when he met his untimely death.

Narrating the events that led to Mr Mahama’s death, the report authored by Professor Frimpong-Boateng said: “During the last NDC regime, several mining companies signed MOUs with the Ghana Army that regulated the supply of security services to the mining companies,” which included C&J Aleska.

“Many Ghanaians will remember the name C&J Aleska, a mining company co-owned by Donald Entsuah and a Canadian National called Simon Ayman that caused a lot of destruction in the town then known as Denkyira Obuasi, near Diaso.

“At one point, the soldiers at the site of C&J Aleska were under the command of Captain Mahama. This fine army man was killed while providing security for Donald Entsuah and his C&J Aleska,” he said.

Major Maxwell Mahama was lynched by a group of residents in a town in the Upper Denkyira West District of the Central Region in 2017. His body was subsequently burnt by residents who claimed he was mistaken for a suspected armed robber.

The culprits were later arrested and are currently facing prosecution.

In the report, Prof Frimpong-Boateng mentioned that all MOUs were cancelled when the NPP took over in 2017, and C&J Aleska hired armed macho men to provide security.
“Residents in the communities bordering the forest reserves complained that they could not enter the forests around to ‘cut ‘women’ [to wit pestle] to pound their fufu with. ” They could not go through the forest to their farms. They were beaten by Chinese who had acquired concessions from C&J Aleska,” he added.

Additionally, he mentioned that his outfit recorded a lot of complaints of abuse by Chinese miners from residents, which compelled the Committee to take action.

“There were credible reports that on many occasions Chinese miners slapped Ghanaians, including women and children, with the broad side of machetes,” but the IMCIM organised its task force and conducted a complex operation to dislodge Donald Entsuah and his C&J Aleska from the Diaso forest.

“The jubilation in the communities around the concessions is static. Naturally, Donald Entsuah and his friend were not happy with what the IMCIM did,” he said.

He said in the aftermath of these events, he was sabotaged by renowned journalist Kweku Baako (a friend to C&J Aleska), who had earlier declared his dislike for how the Professor was handling matters regarding the mining company. Professor Frimpong said as a result, Mr Baako started publishing “unsavoury” things about him.

Stop commenting on Obrafour’s lawsuit on Drake – Rex Omar cautions public

Highlife legend and former Board Chairman of the Ghana Music Rights Organisation (GHAMRO), Rex Omar, has weighed in on the ongoing legal battle between Ghanaian rapper, Obrafour, and American rapper, Drake, over music sampling.

In a Facebook post, Rex Omar emphasized the importance of the owner of the master tape of the recorded sound having the primary right to sue.

He also noted that the creator of the sampled phrase ‘Killer Cut Blood’ has an interest in the case, but it is within the interest of the owner of the master tape.

Rex Omar further advised all interested parties to stop commenting on the case to avoid potentially jeopardizing the outcome of the suit, especially for Mantse, Hammer, and Obrafour.

He stated that it is better to receive 1% of something than 100% of nothing.

According to Rex Omar, Nii Mantse does not have a recorded or unrecorded song titled ‘Killer Cut’, and the phrase ‘Killer Cut’ is a part of Obrafour’s recorded song called ‘Ohene’.

He added that record label that owns the master tape in this case is called EXECUTION, which should have the primary right to sue and deal with the other interested parties.

The issue of music sampling has sparked a debate on social media after Obrafour sued Drake for allegedly sampling his ‘Oye Ohene’ remix on his track, ‘Calling My Name,’ without permission.

Development Bank Ghana’s loan book reaches $302m in Ghana

Since its inception last year, the Development Bank Ghana (DBG) has grown the size of its loan book to GH302 million.

In the first quarter of this year, however, the bank has already disbursed an amount of GH₵57.2 to three participating financial institutions (PFIs) for onward lending to businesses in the agriculture and manufacturing sectors.

The Managing Director (MD) of the DBG, Kwamina Duker, who made this known said the move was in line with the bank’s agenda of spurring the growth of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in the country.

“Our priority is to accelerate lending activities and we have committed to disbursing at least ₵600 million in loans for on-lending to SMEs this year,” he said.

Mr Duker was speaking at an event organised by the DBG and the Ghana Association of Banks (GAB) in Accra on the theme; “Ghana’s Medium-Term Outlook, Navigating through Economic Uncertainties and an IMF Programme”.

“In the first quarter of the year, we increased our lending portfolio by disbursing GH₵57.2 million to three PFIs for onward lending to businesses in the Agriculture and Manufacturing sectors, bringing our loan book size to GH₵302 million,” he said.

    Capacity building

Additionally, he said the bank had provided capacity building for 644 local businesses, including 444 young entrepreneurs, and 52 staff from 13 financial institutions during the quarter.

The training, he said, focused on various aspects of business management, entrepreneurship, and specialised lending to improve the sustainability and growth potential of SMEs, as well as enhance the lending capabilities of PFIs.

“We possess the capacity to provide additional loans to back sustainable projects as they are presented to us, demonstrating our unwavering dedication to growing with our partners and the bank will focus on sectors with high growth potential and significant social and environmental impact, such as agribusiness, manufacturing, and low-carbon and climate-resilient investments,” he said.

In addition, Mr Duker said the bank was working to increase its PFI network after onboarding Zenith Bank this year.

“We have completed due diligence and are on course to onboard Ecobank and Absa as new PFIs this month. DBG will continue to identify and onboard new PFIs to enhance our reach and ability to support SMEs across the country as we seek to have at least 10 PFIs by the end of the year,” he said.

He said another priority was to enhance the bank’s capacity-building initiatives.

As a result, he said the bank would intensify efforts to provide training and support to SMEs and PFIs, equipping them with the necessary skills and knowledge to succeed in their respective sectors.

Mr Duker said it would include offering training on business management, financial planning and environmental and social risk management to 15,000 businesses and entrepreneurs.

“We will work towards attaining relevant certifications and strengthening partnerships with stakeholders to promote sustainability in our operations,” he said.

    Banking industry

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the GAB, John Awuah, said the banking industry was committed to the embedment of a financial ecosystem that carried DBG on its wings via the assurance of an efficient financial services delivery through diligent discharge of its duties.

That, he said, would be in tandem with the basic tenets of DBG’s statutory requirements, guidelines and mandate.

“It is not an exaggeration to state, attempts towards the rapid transformation of the Ghanaian economy from this current state of the desirable path towards accelerated recovery, would require the concerted efforts of all key internal and external stakeholders,” he said.

Deaths and Births Registrar dissatisfied with low level of vital statistics and civil registrations

The Acting Registrar of the Births and Deaths Registry, Henrietta Lamptey, has lamented Ghana’s low rate of civil registrations and vital statistics.

She said although Ghana had a long history of Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS), the level of civil registration of vital events and the quality of the data produced remained unacceptably low.

She said the situation was much dire in the area of death registration.

Mrs Lamptey was speaking at a workshop for institutions whose operations border around the production of CRVS.

The Registrar said she was therefore hopeful that through the workshop, participants would be equipped with the requisite knowledge and skills to effectively improve the process of registering vital events.

This, she said would help the country achieve the United Nations sustainable development goal target 16.9.
    Workshop

The four days’ workshop, which was organised by the Births and Deaths Registry in collaboration with the Ghana Statistical Service, formed part of activities of the CRVS system improvement framework project in Ghana.

Sponsored by the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), the workshop brought together participants from the Ghana Police Service, National Identification Authority, Judicial Service, the Ghana Health Service, National Road Safety Authority, Office of the Attorney General’s Department, and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

Others were the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralisation and Rural Development, Pathology department of Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Registrar General’s Department and other individuals who have expertise in the CRVS system in Ghana.

Over the course of the four-day training workshop, Participants were taken through various topics that were aimed at improving their understanding of the business process models of CRVS. They were admonished to see CRVS as business and treat it as such by becoming more client centered.

The participants were then split into task teams and challenged to develop solutions to a wide array of Civil Registration and Vital Statistics themes like marriages, divorce, birth registration and death registration among others
    Improving CRVS.

The Chief of the Demographic and Social Statistics Section at the African Centre for Statistics of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), Dr William Muhwava, said UNECA was committed to help improve the country’s CRVS system.

He commended the institutions and agencies for the work they have done so far.

Dr. Muhwava admonished participants to own the CRVS system and drive it.

He was of the view that in this time of donor fatigue, there was the need for Ghana to be more proactive in ensure the country gets things right this time.

A consultant for the initiative, Dr Felicia Dake, for her part, highlighted that the workshop had brought together different stakeholders in the CRVS value chain to critically examine the current status of the CRVS system and to develop a sustainable strategy to improve and run the system effectively and efficiently.

Gifty Anti finally clears marriage separation rumours

Social media has been buzzing with rumours of Oheneyere Gifty Anti and her husband, Nana Ansah Kwao’s supposed failed marriage.

Reports from countless blogs that the Ghanaian broadcaster and her husband have separated, spread like wildfire, amidst massive reactions from fans and netizens online.

But nothing was heard from Gifty Anti until a social media influencer defended her under the post of one of the blogs that carried the news.

A headline which read: “Gifty Anti now reportedly lives alone as she allegedly sacks her husband Nana Ansah Kwao IV from home,” caught the attention of the influencer on Facebook. She took a screenshot and re-posted it with a caption that dispelled the rumours. “This is a blatant lie. Oheneyere was with her husband to join their beautiful daughter at school today. Disregard the screenshot below,” she wrote.

Shortly after, Gifty Anti took to the comment section of her defender’s post with proofs to the effect that her marriage is intact.

Expressing surprise at how this particular fan managed to spot them among the many parents who had gathered in the school, Mrs. Oheneyere wrote: “Herrr now I fear you.

Herrr how did you see us? Please add that I joined the tag of peace competition and we won (Though he and his princess did not give me fans) But I fear you ei. Boi.”

Her comments appear to bring a confirmation of this fan’s defence that Gifty Anti’s marriage to Nana Ansah Kwao isn’t struggling, as the earlier reports claim.

  • Gabby Otchere-Darko fights off claims of his alleged involvement in galamsey

Gabby Otchere-Darko fights off claims of his alleged involvement in galamsey

A cousin of President Akufo-Addo has fought off claims that he interfered with his efforts to fight the illegal mining menace as indicated in a report by the former Environment Minister, Prof Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng .

In an attempt to set the record straight, Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko accused the Professor of twisting the events.

He said he never asked the cardiothoracic surgeon, who doubled as the former Chairman of the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining (IMCIM), to engage in any illegality or to condone same.

This comes after Prof Boateng submitted names of people in government frustrating his effort to fight what is locally called ‘galamsey’ when he was Environment Minister.

A 36-page document written by Prof. Boateng addressed to the president, the Chief of Staff, and the police included Mr Otchere Darko’s name.

Portions of the report read: “We were ready to dislodge Imperial Heritage from Kobro Forest when Mr Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko called to inform me that he was the lawyer for Heritage Imperial Limited, a company that was destroying the Kobro and Apaprama Forest Reserves and in the process had also polluted and diverted the course of the River Offin, as can be seen in the satellite images below.

“I informed the President about the behaviour of Mr Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, and he promised to deal with it.”

But Mr Otchere-Darko is fighting back.

According to the NPP stalwart, he only called the renowned medical doctor to seek information on his client – a company that had the permits to mine in the country.

“Heritage had a mining exploration permit issued in July 2019, a forest entry permit issued in November 2018, and also an EPA permit yet the soldiers went and seized the equipment of Heritage and so I called the soldiers and was told that it was the Minister who had sanctioned them and so I asked the Minister what the issue was with the equipment seizures and the Minister said they were prospecting and not exploring and that was the conversation that we had.

“My intervention was to understand why a legitimate company with all the requisite permits was stopped from doing their work and that is what lawyers do,” he said in an interview with Accra-based Citi FM on Thursday.

He added that Prof Frimpong-Boateng deliberately twisted his mediation to cause public disaffection for him.

‘Weak’ Frimpong Boateng twisted my interference in his galamsey report - Otchere-Darko fights back

“The Minister deliberately twisted the inquiry by a lawyer of a client’s issue to be an interference and the thing is, it was even a phone call that lasted not more than four minutes, and he ended by saying Heritage shouldn’t have been issued with the license,” Mr Otchere-Darko explained.

The outspoken politician said the former minister misunderstood his responsibilities.

“It tells you how weak the [former] Minister’s understanding of his position is. If what I did was illegitimate, why didn’t he take the right action? He said he had reported me to the president as if he is a teacher and the president is a headmaster, and I am a prefect,” he added.

New name for possible replacement of CJ pops up

The search for the next Chief Justice (CJ) to replace Chief Justice Kwasi Anin Yeboah is becoming topsy-turvy as an emerging report suggests Akufo-Addo’s former legal partner, Justice Yonny Kulendi, could be the next CJ instead of Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

Earlier this week, graphic.com.gh reported that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has reportedly pencilled in Supreme Court Judge Justice Gertrude Torkornoo as the next Chief Justice of Ghana.

However, a newspaper report by the New Crusading Guide on April 21, 2023, hinted otherwise.

The paper headlined, ‘Search for CJ: Justice Kulendi is the Next Chief Justice…Akufo Addo swerved Gertrude Torkornoo’, is suggesting that the president could go in for his former workmate to be the new CJ of the Supreme Court.

    Biography:

Emmanuel Yonny Kulendi is a Ghanaian judge who hails from Issa, a village in the Upper West Region of Ghana.
In the formative years of his life, young Kulendi spent almost two years in the Wa prisons on remand, and this incident made him resolve all the more to be a lawyer.

He entered the University of Ghana, where he was awarded his Bachelor of laws degree in 1992. He continued at the Ghana School of Law and became a barrister-at-law in 1994.

He holds a master of arts degree in International Security and Civil-Military Relations from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California, United States.

Kulendi had his national service at the Legal Aid Board of Accra. After his service, he joined the Akufo-Addo, Prempeh, and Co. Chambers, where he underwent pupillage.

He later founded his own law firm, Kulendi @ Law, where he worked as the firm’s managing partner until his appointment to the bench.

As a lawyer, his areas of expertise included; Investments, Securities, Commercial Law, Criminal Law, and Litigation.

On 17 March 2020 the president, Nana Akufo-Addo informed the Speaker of Parliament, Mike Oquaye that consultations had been completed for the nomination of Kulendi and three other persons to be made justices of the Supreme Court of Ghana.

Kulendi was vetted together with Justice Joy Henrietta Mensa-Bonsu on Tuesday 12 May 2020. Following his vetting by parliament, Kulendi was approved by parliament on Wednesday 20 May 2020, and sworn into office on Tuesday 26 May 2020.

Kulendi became the first Ghanaian from the Upper West Region to be appointed to serve on Ghana’s highest court of jurisdiction. His appointment also now makes him a part of a small group of persons who were called to the Supreme Court bench directly from the bar.

The Adontenhene of Kwahu Mpraeso and Chief Executive Officer of Azmera Restaurant, Krobea Asante I has advised ladies who aspire to succeed in their endeavours to stop their expensive lifestyle.

She has asked them to quit the ‘slay queen’ lifestyle and focus on their desires in order to attain their objectives.

According to her, lavish lifestyle does not help them achieve their goals; instead, it drains their lives.

Krobea Asante I made these remarks during an exclusive interview on Joy Prime’s Morning Show with host, Asieduwaa Akumia.

“I will let them know that long hair, artificially long nails, and most of those things should start packing them aside. If you want to gain and be successful in whatever you’re doing, put life aside,” she advised.

The Adontenhene also pointed out that the manifestation of one’s dreams is dependent on the individual, as they own their visions and are capable of carrying them out effectively.

She encouraged them to be bold and to challenge themselves so as to achieve their aspirations in life.

From Agbogbloshie, I’ll have to be at Adabraka Market by 7 am, and from there, I’ll have to be at the restaurant by 9:30 am, trying to check around to ensure everything is in place while cooking… ,” she narrated.

All these are due to the fact that she is the visionary of the company and hence cannot leave it for her employees to manage.

Therefore, for ladies who look up to her, she urged them to limit their luxurious lifestyle and focus.

Makeup, she said, “You can do it when necessary.”

Being the founder of Azmera Restaurant, she stated that the success of the business is a result of the hard work she has put into it over the years.

The Adontenhene notified women to be mindful that no one can do it for them except themselves.

  • Nigeria to increase tax on tobacco products to 50%

Nigeria to increase tax on tobacco products to 50%

The Nigerian government has said it will increase the tax imposed on tobacco products from the current 30 to 50 per cent in order to meet the World Health organization (WHO) standard and curb smoking in the country.

Dr Mangai Malau, Head, Tobacco Control Unit, Noncommunicable Disease Division, Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Health disclosed this on Tuesday.

Malau spoke at the National Tobacco Control Budget Advocates Meeting in Abuja where he presented a paper titled “Overview of Tobacco Control Funding/Budgeting in Nigeria: Why Tobacco Control Budgeting and Funding?

He noted that funding for tobacco control must come majorly from taxation and there is also need for relevant stakeholders to apply tax measures rightly if they are to address the issues of tobacco control in the country.

“In effectively controlling tobacco and tobacco products in Nigeria, funding is a critical component. The WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC) recognises this and clearly stipulates in Article 26.

“It states that parties shall provide financial support in respect of its national activities intended to achieve the objective of the Convention, in accordance with its national plans, priorities and programmes.

“It is also important to state that funding is a major provision of the National Tobacco Control (NTC) Act.

“Section eight of the Act, provides for the Tobacco Control Fund, which shall be used to fund tobacco control activities programmes and projects,” Malau said.

According to him, the meeting is therefore important as it will seek for better funding for tobacco control, in order for Nigeria to meet the objectives of the WHO FCTC and the NTC Act.

He said, “Tobacco use and exposure to secondhand smoke is a leading cause of mortality, morbidity, disability and impoverishment in the world.

“It is the greatest risk factor for non-communicable diseases like hypertension, stroke, cancers, diabetes and chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases.

According to him, WHO said: “tobacco causes more than eight million deaths annually around the world, with more than seven million of those deaths as a result of direct tobacco use.

“And about 1.2 million resulting from non-smokers being exposed to second-hand smoke.

He said that tobacco smoke contained over 7,000 chemicals, of which hundreds were toxic and about 70 are known to cause cancer.

“Also, there is no safe level of exposure to tobacco smoke and even a brief exposure can be harmful to one’s health.

“Concerned about the threat from tobacco, Nigeria signed and ratified the WHO FCTC, in 2004 and 2005 respectively. In 2015, the National Tobacco Control (NTC) Act was enacted and its Regulations was passed in 2019,” he said.

In his remarks, the Chairman of Nigeria Tobacco Control Alliance (NTCA), Mr Akinbode Oluwafemi, stressed the need for Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) to advocate for more budgetary allocation for tobacco control in the country.

Oluwafemi urged CSOs to begin the budgetary advocacy in July when the government’s ministries, departments and agencies would commence the 2024 budgets presentation and defence.

According to him, it is also important that CSOs form alliance while carrying out the advocacy.

I can’t stay three years without sex – Akuapem Poloo

Ghanaian actress, Rosemond Brown who is popularly known as Akuapem Poloo, has advised people on the importance of maintaining good behaviour and avoiding activities that could lead them to imprisonment.

The actress, who served a brief sentence in April 2021 for an indecent photograph with her five-year-old son, urged individuals to stay on the right path and to pray to avoid ending up in jail.

Speaking in an interview with Zion Felix, Akuapem Poloo emphasized that prison is not the best place for anyone, and that being imprisoned seizes one’s freedom, just like not being able to have sex.

She added that she cannot imagine being in prison for three years, as it would have had a significant impact on her life.
Akuapem Poloo also pointed out that being in prison for an extended period could lead to psychological effects such as overthinking, which could result in physical changes such as weight loss. She further maintained that she could not imagine being in prison for three years without sex because she can’t stay for that extended period of time without having sex.

“…If you want to have sex, when you get there (prison) no, you won’t get it. It’s true you can’t have sex…Yes if you’re spending twenty-six years, you’re there.

“That is why you should stay away from trouble because your freedom has been taken from you. Just imagine you’ll be there for three years; I can’t stay three years without sex. I’m not a sex type but I can’t stay three years without sex, so, me being there for three years, four years… I might overthink and slim down for people to say that Poloo couldn’t survive prison, so, these are some of the disadvantages of going there,” she said

    Background

Akuapem Poloo, went to jail in Ghana for posting a nude photo of herself and her 7-year-old son on social media in June 2020.

She was charged with publication of obscene material, engaging in domestic violence, and undermining the privacy and integrity of her son.

Akuapem Poloo pleaded guilty to the charges and was sentenced to 90 days in jail by a Ghanaian court in April 2021.

  • Products made of pottery are in greater demand

Products made of pottery are in greater demand

The recent increase in decorating homes and offices of various institutions is fueling demand for pottery products, particularly flower pots.

In previous years flower-pots were often patronised by foreigners, but are now being embraced by Ghanaians also; thanks to the recent penchant for floral beautification – decorating outdoor and indoor spaces with flower-pots. There are others who use flower-pots to cultivate vegetables for personal use and commercial purposes.

This developing trend in the pottery industry is not surprising, as research by Allied Market Research on flower-pots and planters 2020 – 2023, indicates that, globally, the market was valued at US$978.70million in 2020 and is projected to reach US$1.5billion by 2030 – growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.3 percent from 2021 to 2030.

Again, the report suggests that “inclination of consumers toward home interior decorations at residences is expected to fuel the demand for flower-pots and planters”.

According to Wonder Doe, a staff of Charity Adom Ceramics and Floral located in Accra, on a monthly basis he is able to sell more than 100 flower-pots, and sometimes the same quantity within a week; adding that it is possible to make sales of GH¢5,000 in an hour, depending on the customer and size of pots purchased.

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Amenuveve Pots and Gardens, Mawusi Alemawor – who has been in the pottery industry for the past ten years, also makes good sales on a monthly basis; stressing that business booms during rainy seasons when people purchase more flowers, and in festive seasons like Easter and Christmas.

For his part, CEO of De-Bant Ceramics, Dennis Baffour Antwi, also attributes the increase in demand for flower-pots – typically made from clay – to the change in production line among potters. He noted that in recent times most potters have become very creative and innovative to meet the preferences of buyers, and this has made the market more competitive than in previous years.

“Our production line has now changed; such that some producers are now bringing onboard new designs, which have also made customers to patronise more. So, the production line has also played a major role in influencing the demand for pottery works, specifically flower-pots,” he said.

Despite this good news in the market with regard to increase in demand, the industry is faced with a number of challenges.

Among the challenges some potters face in the market is their inability to build earthen-ovens in town to bake their pottery work, due to concerns over air-pollution.

“The smoke can be intense – such that irrespective of how long the chimney is, it still gets into the atmosphere; hence, I am left with no option other than to transport them to my friend’s place to get the pots baked and ready for the market,” he said.

In the process of transporting ready-made pots from places such as Teshie and Okponglo to their place of work for sale, some get broken due to poor road networks.

“Sometimes, when carrying the baked pots from my friend’s house to my place, I have to be in a prayerful mood because some of the pots get broken as a result of pot-holes in the road,” he lamented.

Assistant Production Manager at Curtains – Blow Ceramic and Potters Studio, Isaac Ebo Nyamekye, says to reduce the cost incurred by broken pots for their customers, they add extra pots to the quantity ordered by clients.

With the advent of technology, potters can also make use of gas and electric ovens for their work – but say they are unable to afford these due to their high cost, hence the best option is to rely on traditional ovens with firewood.

The potters have urged government to give attention to the industry, since it has potential for contributing to the country’s economic growth.

  • Why Sir John was tagged ‘greatest danger to forests’

Why Sir John was tagged ‘greatest danger to forests’

Former Chief Executive Officer of the Forestry Commission of Ghana, Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie (Sir John) has disclosed the source of former Forestry Commission boss, Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie, known as Sir John’s tag as the “greatest danger to forests.”

Details of the Report on the Work of the IMCIM and the Way Forward, put together by Prof. Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, have shown that the late former Chief Executive Officer of the Forestry Commission of Ghana, Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie (Sir John) was engaged in acts that endangered the forestry sector.

The report, dated March 19, 2021, and submitted to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo described Sir John as the ‘greatest danger to forests of Ghana.’

It was a direct statement that was said to the president by Prof Frimpong-Boateng, who, at the time, was his Minister of Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation.

“I remember that at a meeting in the conference room of the President, I told the president in the presence of Sir John that the greatest danger to the forests of Ghana was Sir John,” page 10 of the report stated.

But what exactly was Sir John, who was also the General Secretary of the ruling political party in Ghana, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), involved in that got him this tag?

What Sir John was doing as Forestry Commission boss

In the report submitted by Prof. Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, he cited the actions and inactions of Sir John during his tenure as the boss at the Forestry Commission of Ghana.

Using this example to buttress a point in a confidential report submitted to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in 2019, said that Sir John was in the habit of giving out timber concessions in forest reserves.

It also added that he was actively engaged in mining, using Chinese gangs as his main avenue.

Also, the Prof Frimpong-Boateng report indicated the Sir John-led FC refused to join an anti-galamsey taskforce’s GalamStop platform – which the government created to coordinate the fight against the menace that was polluting water bodies and ravaging Ghana’s forest cover.

He also explained that the former FC boss was engaged in giving out timber concessions.

“I was not surprised that the Forestry Commission did not migrate onto the GalamStop platform. Mr. Kwadwo Owusus Afriyie (aka Sir John) was actively giving out timber concessions, even in forest reserves for logging.

“Through Charles Owusu, the Director of Operations at the Forestry Commission, Sir John had Chinese gangs doing mining on his behalf. The issue about rose wood is something that is beyond the scope of this report,” the report added.

  • ‘You are a fool if you deny pregnancy in your youthful age’ – Oboy Siki

‘You are a fool if you deny pregnancy in your youthful age’ – Oboy Siki

Kumawood actor, Oboy Siki, has reacted to recent reports of a man parading himself as Agya Koo’s biological father.

Earlier in an interview with Ghana News TV, the said man, identified as Kwesi Bediako, is seeking a reconciliation with his son (Agya Koo), whom he had not seen since birth.

“After Agya Koo’s mother and I met in Tema during work, we started a relationship and she later informed me that she was pregnant. She gave birth and named the child Kofi Adu but I wasn’t aware. I had not seen her and my child since. My name is Agya Koo, so there is no doubt that my son adopted that name. It is no coincidence. I have heard different stories about his mother’s whereabouts. Some say she is dead; others say she is still alive, I don’t know.

“As for my son, I didn’t know what he looked like until I bought one of his movies. Life is extremely hard for me. So, everybody is asking me to go and find my son and make amends because now he is a successful man. they have encouraged me to find him because he could transform my life for the better. He could help ease my present suffering as a farmer,” he established.

Although Agya Koo has not publicly commented on the issue, he has had a conversation with his friend cum colleague, Oboy Siki, regarding it.

Oboy Siki was given the platform to share his thoughts on the issue during a discussion on GHPageTV and he started with:

“Men who deny pregnancy during their youthful days are fools. Accept it. Just accept it and even wait for a while before you leave even if you want to.”

Speaking further, the actor labelled as inappropriate and unwise for the said man to claim Agya Koo after all these years.

The 80-year-old actor insisted that Agya Koo had lost and buried his parents adding that he (Oboy Siki) had known the actor since childhood.

“You waited for more than 20 years to come up with this? You waited for him to bury his father and mother. Agya is now thinking about himself, he is an orphan who is just going about his business. The man is lying. We saw Agya Koo during his childhood days here in Kumasi. We were witnesses to it. Gradually he became a young man who developed an interest in concert parties.

“I know Agya Koo is originally from Agona Wiamoase and not the town that man is mentioning. I have lived in Krofrom for about 50 years and in Tafo for 7 years. I watched Agya Koo while he was growing up. He isn’t that old; he will be around 51 or 52 years,” he stated

Oboy Siki who claimed to have had a lengthy conversation with Agya Koo over the issue said the latter is considering legal action against the man and any other ‘impersonator’ that will show up in the future.

“When the issue happened, I informed Agya Koo and he is so pissed. Agya said if the man needs support he should come clear on that and he will be willing to support. But should he persist with the so-called paternity claims, he will be compelled to sue,” he added.

Muyiwa Awoniyi, the manager of Grammy-award-winning Nigerian singer, Tems has revealed that the entertainer conducted praise and worship in her prison cell when she was detained by the Uganda police in 2020.

One can recall that Nigerian artistes, Omah Lay and Tems, and some of their team members were arrested and detained in Kampala, Uganda in December 2020 for flouting COVID-19 guidelines.

Recounting the event while featuring as a guest on the latest episode of Menisms’ audiovisual podcast hosted Olumurewa and Michael Sonariwo, Awoniyi said Tems had the prisoners singing along with her.

He said, “Entering prison, as a woman, Tems, they [prison warders] took her to the female section. I was just worried about her. I was not with her. I was just wondering what the hell is going on [with her?].

“I will come to find out that Tems conducted praise and worship in a whole prison cell. Everybody was singing with her. She took over the whole prison.”

He said the experience was heartbreaking.

Popular media personality cum businesswoman, Joyce Serwaa Amihere, shocked fans with a recent revelation about her marital status.

Over the years, scores of netizens, predominantly male admirers, have gushed over her looks and soft-spoken nature.

Her seamless flawless looks captured on social media have captivated the hearts of many.

However, it appears the GHOne broadcaster might have crushed hearts with her latest post on Snapchat.

During a question-and-answer session, a fan asked how much her bride price will cost and she disclosed that she is already married.

“Serwaa, how much is the bride price again?” the fan quizzed.

    “I’m married though,” she responded.

It can be recalled that when Serwaa faced back-to-back trolls on social media sometime in 2021, She was asked about her coping mechanism, and she cited her partner among the list of people that give her peace.

“It’s not just one person, it’s two or three people. It’s my sister, my partner and sometimes Nana Aba. She likes to rubbish some of these things but my partner will constantly be like just leave these people,” she told AngelFM’s Okyeame Quophi.

  • New EC CI: You’re not wiser than parliament – Dafeamekpor fires Dr Serebour

New EC CI: You’re not wiser than parliament – Dafeamekpor fires Dr Serebour

The Minority Chief Whip, Governs Kwame Agbodza, has descended heavily on the Director of Electoral Services of the Electoral Commission (E.C.), Dr. Serebour Quaicoe, for comments he made regarding the proposed Constitutional Instrument (C.I.) for the 2024 general elections.

Governs Agbodza’s angst comes after Dr. Quaicoe described the Parliament’s resolutions as mere expressions of opinion.

The E.C. presented a new C.I to Parliament, seeking to scrap the guarantor system, limit registration to district offices, and the proof of nationality to only the Ghana Card.

However, when Parliament made recommendations, Dr. Quaicoe termed them opinions.

But according to the Minority Chief Whip, the Electoral Commission cannot liken resolutions of a Parliamentary committee to a mere opinion that can be discarded.

In Agbodza’s view, Dr. Quaicoe is not more intelligent than the entire Parliament of Ghana.

Agbodza emphasized that Parliament is at liberty to make changes to any Bill brought before it for consideration.

He, therefore, stated in a Facebook post that “true sovereignty resides in the people of Ghana, whose interests Parliament represents. Parliament is not a mere conveyor belt of proposed bills.

“Parliament can make fundamental changes to any Bill brought before the House.”

“Dr. Serebour cannot pretend to be wiser than the entire Parliament of Ghana,” the Member of Parliament added.

He warned sternly that no one would allow Dr. Quaicoe “to derail the democratic gains made over the years.”

He concluded that appropriate steps would be taken on the matter when Parliament reconvenes.

  • Global investment in digital transformation will reach US$3.4 trillion by 2026

Global investment in digital transformation will reach US$3.4 trillion by 2026

With global digital transformation spending expected to reach US$3.4trillion by 2026, Huawei’s Rotating Conference Chairwoman, Meng Wanzhou, has advocated a move from narrow artificial intelligence (AI) to general and super-AI.

She said digitalisation is the new blue ocean for the whole information, communication and technology (ICT) value chain, and it is imperative that the strategic objectives of industry should drive digital transformation rather than the technology itself.

“Digitalisation is a new blue ocean for the whole ICT value chain. Enterprises that are going digital and enterprises that are helping others go digital will have huge addressable markets and huge economic benefits,” Ms. Meng said during Huawei’s 20th Global Analyst Conference held in China.

Against this backdrop, the leading global provider of ICT infrastructure and smart devices said it will ramp up its investments in domains like connectivity, computing, storage and cloud – in a bid to deepen its drive to enable productivity and efficiency improvements across industries such as mining, healthcare, ports, transportation and many others.

Huawei has over the years built in-depth partnerships with nearly 200 power enterprises worldwide, and is providing digital services for more than 20 leading oil and gas enterprises and 800 mining enterprises.

In Ghana, government’s strategic digitalisation agenda, if pursued to the letter, could position the country as a fertile ground for data science research and development; and to take advantage of this investment to develop AI solutions for the agriculture, health, education and financial sectors.

It will also provide unique opportunities to accelerate economic growth and connect citizens to services and jobs, a move that could support efforts to restore macroeconomic stability.

    Digital infrastructure

Huawei disclosed it is building the digital infrastructure that will support these increasingly diverse and complex industrial scenarios. These networks require ultra-reliable and fast connections between people and intelligent objects, and between home and factories. It is leading the development of next-generation 5.5G infrastructure, developing the technology and networks that will support over 100 billion connections and deliver a 10-gigabit user experience.

Outlining the four distinct characteristics of digital infrastructure that Huawei is delivering to help customers go digital, Ms. Meng said: “We aim to provide our customers with digital infrastructure that has the simplest possible architecture and the highest possible quality, delivering the best possible experience at the lowest possible costs.

“Our goal is to help organisations go digital in four stages: digitising operations, building digital platforms, enabling platform-based intelligence, and putting intelligence to use. The time is ripe to thrive together in this new and exciting digital future.”

An intelligent world needs new networks and new computing

As humans move toward an intelligent world, two key areas were identified during the conference: new networks and new computing. As a result, Dr. Zhou Hong – President of the Institute of Strategic Research – observed that networks and computing are the two key cornerstones underpinning the shift from narrow AI toward general-purpose AI and super-AI.

“To get there, we will need to take three key steps. First, we need to continue driving breakthroughs in theories and technologies to deliver ubiquitous, intelligent connectivity and drive social progress. Second, we need to keep pushing our cognitive limits to better understand and control intelligence. Finally, we need to define the right vision and use the right approach to guide AI development in a way that truly helps overcome human limitations, improves lives, creates matter, controls energy, and transcends time and space. This is how our society as a whole will continue to evolve and thrive,” he said.

The goals of AI must be defined and aligned

He added that as AI’s capabilities are improving rapidly, there’s a need to consider how to make sure the development of AI is what people want and ensure AI execution is accurate and efficient.

“We must create rules and laws to enhance AI ethics and governance.” He believes that from a theoretical and technical perspective these goals present three major challenges: AI goal-definition, accuracy and adaptability, and efficiency.

“If we don’t have an agreed-upon definition, it’s almost impossible to ensure that the goals of AI and human beings will be aligned. It also makes it difficult to make reasonable classifications and computations,” Dr. Zhou explained.

Meanwhile, a panel discussion was held during the summit on the role that digital productivity plays in driving industrial digitalisation, the challenges industries face in their digitalisation process, recommended actions, as well as expectations for industries in the process of building up their digital productivity.

ECG advises customers to fix any illegality in their meters in the upcoming month

The Managing Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Samuel Mahama, has indicated that the next major exercise, after his outfit’s revenue mobilisation drive, is clamping down on illegal connections in the country.

According to him, the company will be going from house to house and business to business to check for illegal connections and any entity found culpable will face the full rigours of the law, asaaseradio.com reports.

“Those who are involved in illegal connections, we’re giving you one month head start to correct it because I’m not charging you with bypass, I’m charging you with theft, you’ve stolen,” Samuel Mahama is quoted to have said on the Asaase Breakfast Show.

“It’s now so important that we finish the ‘Know Your Customer Drive’. We’re going to do this alongside checking for illegal connections,” he added.

The ECG boss also said that they will still be chasing households and organisations that are indebted to them even though the nationwide revenue mobilisation exercise will end on Friday, April 21, 2023.

“At the end of this exercise, we’ll re-evaluate our position. The debts that are collectable, we’re collecting them. We’ll not make anyone short-change this country,” he said.

He also disclosed that his outfit has collected more than GH¢2 billion of the GH¢5.7 billion revenue it targeted for the one-month revenue mobilisation exercise.

  • Elon Musk’s Twitter begins blue badge axing

Elon Musk’s Twitter begins blue badge axing

Elon Musk’s Twitter on Thursday began a purge of blue verification check marks from users who have not signed up for its subscription service, with the checks disappearing from the accounts of journalists, academics and celebrities.

The blue checks even disappeared from the accounts of some of the most well-known and widely followed people on the social network, including Kim Kardashian, Beyonce, Bill Gates, Pope Francis, former president Donald Trump and Twitter founder Jack Dorsey.

Some government agencies — including the official account for US Citizenship and Immigration Services and accounts for some state Customs and Border Patrol offices — also lost their blue checks, which weren’t immediately replaced by the gray checks Twitter has designated for government accounts.

The initial rollout of the change appeared to be fairly glitchy, as blue checks disappeared and reappeared on some accounts. Some other high-profile legacy verified accounts also didn’t seem to lose their checks, at least at first.

The change — and its confusing rollout — threatens to create an even greater risk of impersonation of high-profile users and confusion over the veracity of information on the platform.

“Though we have lost our checkmark, this is the official USCIS twitter account,” the government agency wrote in a tweet on Thursday. “Please beware of imposter accounts.”

The move could also discourage some high-profile users at risk of being imitated on the site from using the platform. Immediately following the disappearance of legacy blue checks, some users began tweeting that they planned to leave the site.

Twitter had previously said it would “begin winding down” blue checks granted under its old verification system — which emphasized protecting high-profile users at risk of impersonation — on April 1. In order to stay verified, Musk said, users would have to pay $8 per month to join the platform’s Twitter Blue subscription service, which has allowed accounts to pay for verification since December.

Instead, Twitter removed the check mark from a single account from The New York Times, a publication Musk has repeatedly criticized, and changed the language on its site in a way that obscures why users are verified.

Last week, Musk tweeted that the “final date for removing legacy Blue checks is 4/20,” a date with special resonance to the billionaire entrepreneur given its meaning to marijuana enthusiasts.

The decision to move forward with the change is just the latest example of Musk’s Twitter upending the experience for users — and in this case, not just any users, but many of the most high-profile accounts that have long been a key selling point for the platform.

Prominent users such as actor William Shatner and anti-bullying activist Monica Lewinsky have previously pushed back against the idea that, as power users that draw attention to the site, they should have to pay for a feature that keeps them safe from impersonation. On Thursday, before the check marks disappeared, Lewinsky implied in a tweet that she would also leave the platform following the change.

Musk, for his part, has previously presented changes to Twitter’s verification system as a way of “treating everyone equally.”

“There shouldn’t be a different standard for celebrities,” he said in an earlier tweet. The paid feature could also drive revenue, which could help Musk, who is on the hook for significant debt after buying Twitter for $44 billion.

Musk has also suggested that requiring uses to pay for verification could help eliminate spam and scam accounts after repeatedly complaining about the number of bots on the platform. However, experts in online inauthentic behavior have said the plan is unlikely to deter bad actors, who could just as easily pay to be verified.

“In fact, this is making Twitter a pay-for-play system, and we know that propagandists, people working to spread disinformation and other forms of manipulation via Twitter, are very much willing and able to finance their operations,” Samuel Woolley, assistant professor at the University of Texas’ School of Information and author of the book “Bots,” told CNN in November.

“Most of the propagandists that social media companies are most worried about, like the Russian government, the Chinese government, extremist groups, have a lot of resources,” he said.

  • Prof Gadzekpo bemoans meagre salaries of media practitioners in Ghana

Prof Gadzekpo bemoans meagre salaries of media practitioners in Ghana

Professor Audrey Gadzekpo of the Department of Communication Studies, University of Ghana, has bemoaned meagre salaries earned by media practitioners in Ghana.

Making a strong case for journalists to be well-remunerated to ensure the effective and professional delivery of their mandate, she said the current state of remuneration for journalists was precarious and “shockingly low,” which impacted negatively on the quality of stories they produced, she said.

“Salaries are woefully low, shockingly low…considering that media work is formal work, and you don’t expect formal work to be so precarious.”

This forms part of the key findings of the “The State of the Ghanaian Media Report 2023” launched by the Department of Communication Studies, University of Ghana, in Accra, on Wednesday.

Prof Gadzekpo, a former Dean of the School of Information and Communication Studies, and Chairperson of CDD-Ghana, who presented the Report, charged media owners and managers to improve the working conditions of their staff to enable them to work effectively.

The Report, among other things, was to determine the financial viability of media organisations in Ghana, and the safety and working conditions of media practitioners.

It found that the poor recruitment process, which lacked transparency, was a major reason for the poor remuneration of media practitioners in the country.

“It tends to be who you know, rather than the former advertisement that will go out to say, we have this job available, and therefore, it invites people to apply, and it becomes more meritocratic,” she said.

“Whereas many earned an average of GH¢500 to 1000 a month, the majority also worked without contracts.”

One concern was the poor working conditions, generally.

“The research found that how you came in determines the conditions of service, who brought you in, determines your conditions of service,” Prof Gadzekpo said.

Most media organisations were under severe financial stress, she said, adding; “At best they are breaking even.”

On the safety of journalists, she mentioned a growing sense of insecurity among journalists in the country and said even though the violations were a little bit gendered, male journalists were more at risk of physical attacks.

Even though such attacks were mostly perpetrated by state actors, political appointees, the police, and national security, a significant minority (almost 46 percent) of the attacks were by non-state actors, including political fanatics, foot soldiers, and church congregants.

For “Timeless,” I had to select from a list of 62 songs – Davido

Nigerian Singer Davido released his fourth album ‘Timeless’ on March 31, 2023. The highly anticipated album came off the back of a rare moment of silence from the megastar whose music has defined Afrobeats for the past decade.

While speaking to CNN, Davido revealed that he recorded about 62 while preparing for his new album.

“I had to pick out of 62 songs for ‘Timeless‘. We first narrowed it down to 20 songs than to 17 and 18 songs,” the hitmaker tells CNN’s African Voices.

Davido also narrated that the process of picking the songs that made the album was quite painstaking as there was a large pool of great songs to choose from.

“It’s the hardest process. Today, you say you want this one and in two weeks you’re not feeling it anymore and you want a new one.”

Davido also revealed that his next album was effectively done as he had enough new songs for a new project.

Davido has announced that there will be a ‘Timeless’ deluxe. He is also set to perform songs from his new album on April 23, 2023, at Tafawa Balewa Square Lagos and according to the hitmaker, the concert will be an unforgettable experience.
