Toxic smoke from a recycling factory fire forces many to relocate

With the release of hazardous black smoke into the air, a large fire at a recycling factory in Indiana drove thousands of people to flee the area.

At Richmond, a city on the Ohio border that is roughly 70 miles east of Indianapolis, a fire broke out at a former factory site that was being used to store recyclable plastics.

Authorities now think that the fire started in a semi-trailer carrying plastics before spreading to the building, which was ‘wall to wall’ with plastic storage.

Indiana State Fire Marshal Steve Jones said the fumes from the blaze were ‘definitely toxic’ at a press conference on Tuesday.

‘There’s a host of different chemicals plastics give off when they’re on fire,’ he said.

No injuries have been reported as of Wednesday morning, but the city ordered evacuations for homes within a half-mile radius of the facility. About 2,000 people have been evacuated.

The evacuation area may change if wind patterns change before the fire is extinguished, officials said. Winds have already blown some of the toxic fumes across the border into Ohio.

Part of the facility is owned by the city, but most was owned by a private business owner, who had multiple citations for improper storage, officials said.

‘They were under a city order to clean up and remediate that site,’ Richmond Mayor Dave Snow said. ‘We knew that was a fire hazard the way they were storing materials.’

‘He had been warned several times,’ Richmond Fire Chief Tim Brown told Fox 59. ‘We knew it wasn’t a matter of it, it was a matter of when.’

At another press conference on Tuesday, city officials blamed the fire on the

‘The business owner is responsible for this mess,’ Snow said. ‘This person has been negligent and irresponsible, and it’s led to putting a lot of people in danger.’

Three major buildings in Kumasi halted due to lack of capital

Construction works on three major projects in the Ashanti Region have been halted due to a lack of funds.

The projects include phase two of the Kumasi International Airport, phase two of the Kejetia Central Market redevelopment project, and the 500-bed capacity Mother and Baby Unit at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).

Citi News sources indicate the Finance Ministry has since December 2022 not been releasing funds towards the construction of the projects which has led to some 2000 workers being laid off.

Many residents in Kumasi fear that just like many other projects in the past, work could be abandoned on the three projects and have thus urged authorities to find a way of ensuring work resumes as early as possible.

The Mayor of Kumasi, Samuel Pyne in an interview with Citi News said the projects have been put on hold because of the government’s ongoing debt restructuring as part of the IMF support the country is seeking.

“I don’t want to use the word stalled because it has been put on hold purposely because the government is doing a restructuring of our debt profile and most of these contracts fall under the projects that have been put on hold, and it is not only the Kumasi Central Market phase two nor the Maternity and Baby Unit at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital. Work will resume after the completion of the debt restructuring programme.”

My wrath will fall on any MP, President who accepts LGBTQI+ – Dormaahene

The Dormaahene, Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyemang Badu II, has vowed to remove any president or leader in Ghana who says LGBTQI+ activities should be legalised in the country.

Agyemang Badu II said that even though the laws of Ghana forbid chiefs from engaging in active politics, he will ignore this law and start doing politics to remove any political leader who says Ghana should accept LGBT.

The chief, who made these remarks while addressing a gathering in Dormaa, in a video shared by Abranpredease TV on Wednesday, vowed to ensure that all Members of Parliament (MPs) who vote against the approval of the anti-LGBTQI bill being considered by the House, are removed.

He added that Ghanaians do not accept LGBTQI activities, and the people they elect to represent them cannot force them to accept it.

“We the chiefs do not accept it, our pastors don’t accept it, traditionalists don’t accept it, Muslims also don’t accept it. This (the issue of LGBTI) is none negotiable. You are representing us; we gave you that power and we are saying we don’t want this, how can you go and say a different thing?

“If the president, the vice or any leader in Ghana says he accepts LGBT, even though the laws of Ghana bars chiefs from engaging in active politics, I, Agyemang Badu II, will do politics and organise people to where you are and remove you from your seat.

“And I am saying here today that all the MPs who are in my territories if you vote that a man and a man can have sex as well as a woman and another woman, I will make sure you are removed. Even if you are not in any of my territories, I will work with your chief and we will campaign against you to make sure you are removed,” he said in Twi.

Meanwhile, Parliament is expected to debate and pass the Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, 2021 (Anti-LGBTQI bill).

This is after the Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee of Parliament presented the final draft of the, which was sponsored by a group of bi-partisan Members of Parliament led by Ningo Prampram MP Sam Nartey George, to the plenary.

If the bill is passed, persons who engage in anti-LGBTQI activities as well as those who advocate for the acceptance of these activities in Ghana are likely to be punished.

Biden is “not anti-British – White House

The White House has stated that President Joe Biden is not “anti-British” after he delivered a significant address in Northern Ireland.

The 46th President spoke in front of a small audience at Ulster University and called for the restoration of power-sharing in Stormont.

In his very brief 20-minute speech, he said that peace had “changed” Northern Ireland and discussed the effects of Brexit as well as new business prospects.

After accusations that he was “anti-British,” the President had met with UK relations three times in as many months.

Mr Biden, who is proud of his Irish ancestry has recently been heavily criticised by senior DUP figures.

MP Sammy Wilson claimed the president ‘has got a record of being pro-Republican, anti-Unionist, anti-British’ while former first minister Baroness Foster has suggested he ‘hates the UK’.

But the suggestion he was anti-British was rejected by Amanda Sloat, senior director for Europe at the US National Security Council.

She said: ‘It’s simply untrue – the fact that the president is going to be engaging for the third time in three months, and then again next month and then again in June, with the Prime Minister of the UK shows how close our co-operation is with the UK.

‘And before that, the president had numerous calls and meeting with prime minister Johnson, and prime minister Truss as well.’

Ms Sloat went on: ‘President Biden obviously is a very proud Irish-American, he is proud of those Irish roots, but he is also a strong supporter of our bilateral partnership with the UK, and not only on a bilateral basis within Nato, the G7, on the UN Security Council, and we truly are working in lockstep with the British Government on all of the pressing global challenges that our countries are facing.’

In his speech, Mr Biden went on to speak about Brexit and new economic opportunities for Northern Ireland.

There was also a huge cheer for Belfast barista turned Hollywood star James Martin who got a shout-out from the President.

Mr Biden landed last night and before speaking he met with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.

Over coffee this morning the President said he was ‘here to listen’ on the anniversary of the historic peace-making agreement.

He began his speech by recalling when he came to Belfast in 1991 and ‘you couldn’t have a glass building in the neighbourhood’ where Ulster University now stands due to the Troubles.

He said: ‘Things are changing’ and thanked his hosts for the welcome to Belfast, adding that it was wonderful to meet the different party leaders from Northern Ireland.

He added that ‘Dividends of peace are all around us’ and went on to discuss the signing of the landmark Good Friday Agreement 25 years ago this week.

He told the audience there were no guarantees that they’d be able to deliver the progress that we now see today.

The President added that ‘Peace was not inevitable’ adding that it took people coming together all across Northern Ireland to make it work.

He said the future of Northern Ireland was ‘America’s future’ as he hailed the economic opportunities for the region.

‘Your history is our history, but even more important your future is America’s future.

‘Today’s Belfast is the beating heart of Northern Ireland and is poised to drive unprecedented economic opportunity and investment, from communities across the UK, across Ireland, across the United States.

‘The simple truth is that peace and economic opportunity go together.’

‘The 25 years since the Good Friday Agreement, Northern Ireland’s gross domestic product has literally doubled.’

The president said that figure would only improve if ‘things continue to move in the right direction’.

He added: ‘There are scores of major American corporations wanting to come here, wanting to invest. Many have already made homes in Northern Ireland.’

Speaking about a return to power-sharing Biden said that an ‘effective devolved government that reflects the people of Northern Ireland, and is accountable to them, that works to find ways to face hard problems together will grow greater opportunities for the region’.

He added: ‘I hope the Assembly and the Executive will soon be restored’ along with opportunities to facilitate relationships between the north and south, he says.

‘That’s a decision for you to make, not for me to make.

‘Northern Ireland will not go back, pray God.’

Earlier today as part of his visit he met with Prime Minister who said the UK’s relationship with the US is ‘in great shape’, describing them as ‘very close partners and allies.’

He said he had a ‘very good discussion’ with the President.

Mr Sunak said they discussed economic investment in Northern Ireland as well as foreign policy issues.

He said: ‘That comes on the back of a meeting I had with him last month in the US, I’m seeing him again next month at the G7 and then I’m going to Washington in June; we’re very close partners and allies, we co-operate on a range of things, whether that’s supporting Ukraine or economic security.

‘I think actually the relationship is in great shape, and the President and I have lots that we’re working on together.’

The US president’s son Hunter Biden and sister Valerie Biden Owens are accompanying him for the four-day trip, which will include visits in Ireland linked to his family history.

After he leaves Belfast on Wednesday, Mr Biden will cross the border to attend engagements in Co Louth.

The president has traced his ancestral roots to the area and he will tour Carlingford Castle in the county before spending the night in Dublin.

He is then expected to visit Irish president Michael D Higgins on Thursday.

The White House said Mr Biden will take part in a tree-planting ceremony and the ringing of the Peace Bell at the president’s official residence, Aras an Uachtarain.

Following that ceremony, he will meet again with Taoiseach Leo Varadkar, whom Mr Biden recently hosted for St Patrick’s Day.

Mr Biden will address the Irish parliament and attend a banquet dinner at Dublin Castle on Thursday evening.

The US president’s trip will conclude with a visit to Co Mayo, where he has also connected with distant cousins, on Friday.

He will tour the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Knock and visit the North Mayo Heritage and Genealogical Centre’s family history research unit.

Mr Biden will then make a public speech at St Muredach’s Cathedral in Ballina – the president’s great-great-great grandfather Edward Blewitt sold 27,000 bricks to the cathedral in 1827, which helped him to afford to buy tickets for himself and his family to sail to America decades later in 1851.

  • Attorney General of Manhattan files a lawsuit against a politician to stop any interference

Attorney General of Manhattan files a lawsuit against a politician to stop any interference

In an effort to prevent congressional Republicans from meddling in the criminal case, the Manhattan district attorney who is pursuing former President Donald Trump has filed a lawsuit against a legislator.

On Tuesday, Republican Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio was named in a 50-page lawsuit filed in the Southern District of New York by District Attorney Alvin Bragg.

According to The New York Times, the lawsuit accuses Jordan of launching a ‘brazen and unconstitutional onslaught’ against the prosecutors looking into Trump’s hush money issue.

Jordan, the House Judiciary Committee chairman, has led a ‘transparent campaign to intimidate and attack’ on Bragg, claims the suit.

The lawsuit comes a week after Bragg unveiled 34 felony charges against Trump and the ex-president was arraigned in Manhattan Criminal Court. Trump has pleaded not guilty on all counts.

In the suit, Bragg slams Jordan and House Republicans for subpoenaing former assistant district attorney Mark Pomerantz, who was involved in the Trump probe.

‘Rather than allowing the criminal process to proceed in the ordinary course, Chairman Jordan and the committee are participating in a campaign of intimidation, retaliation and obstruction,’ states the suit.

Bragg seeks a court order barring Pomerantz from complying with the subpoena. Pomerantz resigned in early 2022, weeks after Democrat Bragg assumed the district attorney role and decided against seeking an indictment on Trump at the moment.

The subpoena marked a significant escalation in the clash between the Republican-led House Judiciary Committee and Bragg’s office. Bragg is investigating Trump’s alleged involvement in a hush payment to silence porn star Stormy Daniels’ claims of an affair with the ex-president. Bragg’s lawsuit is a tremendous effort to stop interference in the case.

Jordan responded by tweeting on Tuesday afternoon: ‘First, they indict a president for no crime. Then, they sue to block congressional oversight when we ask questions about the federal funds they say they used to do it.’

Since Trump predicted his arrest on March 18, Bragg’s office has received more than 1,000 phone calls and emails from the ex-president’s supporters including many that are ‘threatening and racially charged’, according to the suit.

Court personnel were “weeping” and expressing regret – Donald Trump

Donald Trump alleges that when he was detained and checked in at a New York courthouse last week, officers and workers “were genuinely crying.”

He made history by denying 34 felony counts of falsifying business records in connection with an alleged hush money plan involving adult film star Stormy Daniels. He was the first former US president to be charged with a crime.

In his first interview since, he spoke extensively about the arraignment, explaining how the court’s hardened officers—who are capable of “putting in murderers”—were “in tears or close to it.”

He also discussed the evacuation from Afghanistan in 2021, saying the US left a number of dogs – ‘mostly German Shepherds’ – behind, as well as the Ukraine war, calling Vladimir Putin a ‘smart’ man who has ‘loves Ukraine’ and has had ‘probably a bad year’.

Footage from inside the Manhattan courthouse last week showed Trump surrounded by stony-faced staff – one of whom even appeared to refuse to hold the door open for him.

The former president has long been mocked for claiming people cry when they meet him.

Speaking to Fox News’s Tucker Carlson, he said: ‘When I went to the courthouse, which is also a prison, in a sense, they signed me in and I’ll tell you, people were crying.

‘People that work there, professionally work there, that have no problems putting in murderers, they see everybody. It’s a tough, tough place, and they were crying. They were actually crying.

‘They said I’m sorry. They’d say “2024, sir, 2024” and tears are pouring down their eyes. I’ve never seen anything like it.

‘Those people are phenomenal. Those are your police. Those are the people that work at the courthouse, they’re unbelievable people.

‘Many of them were in tears or close to it. Many apologies – “we’re sorry, sir, we’re sorry”.

‘In one sense it was beautiful, because they get it, but in another sense it’s nasty – I went to the Wharton School of Finance, they didn’t teach me that.’

Trump repeated his insistence that he is innocent and there is no case against him.

Carlson asked if there was ‘anything they could throw at [him] legally’ that would convince him to drop out of the 2024 race to the White House.

Trump replied: ‘No, I’d never drop out. It’s not my thing. I wouldn’t do it.’

There is no legal bar to running or winning the presidency as a convicted felon or even from behind bars.

Elsewhere in the hour-long interview, he told Carlson he asked a five-year-old about the best way to manage the evacuation from Afghanistan and claimed the US left a number of dogs behind.

He said: ‘They left the dogs — you know the dog lovers, and there are a lot of them, I love dogs, you love dogs, but they left the dogs.

‘One of the first questions I got: “What did they do with the dogs?” Mostly German Shepherds.’

Trump, who has criticised the way his successor Joe Biden handled the evacuation, said he asked a child what order it should have happened.

He said: ‘I did a little skit with a five-year-old kid, I said, “Let me ask you: here’s the situation.” I explained the situation. I said, “Would you take the military out first or would you take it out last?” “I’d take it out last.” Five-year-old.”

Trump was also asked if he had spoken to Putin about Ukraine, saying: ‘I could see that he loved it. He considers it to be a part of Russia. I said not when I’m president.’

He said of the Russian president: ‘Putin – very smart. Now, he’s had probably a bad year.’

An elderly couple in Malaysia passes away after consuming deadly pufferfish

In Malaysia, an elderly couple died after consuming deadly pufferfish, prompting their daughter to call for stricter regulations to stop other people from meeting the same fate.

According to authorities in the southern state of Johor, Ng Chuan Sing and his wife Lim Siew Guan, who are both in their early 80s, accidentally bought at least two pufferfish from an internet dealer on March 25.

Lim started having “breathing difficulty and shivers” the same day he fried the fish for lunch, according to the authorities.
They said that her spouse Ng began exhibiting comparable symptoms an hour after the dinner.

The couple was rushed to hospital and admitted to the intensive care unit, and Lim was pronounced dead at 7p.m. local time.

Ng fell into a coma for eight days but his condition worsened and he died on Saturday morning, said the couple’s daughter, Ng Ai Lee, who gave a press conference at the couple’s home on Sunday before their funeral.

Ng demanded accountability for her parents’ death and for stronger laws in Malaysia, where at least 30 species of pufferfish are commonly found in surrounding waters.

“Those responsible for their deaths should be held accountable under the law and I hope the authorities will speed up investigations,” Ng said. “I also hope the Malaysian government will beef up enforcement and help to raise public awareness on pufferfish poisoning to prevent such incidents from happening again.”

Malaysian law prohibits the sale of poisonous and harmful food like pufferfish meat and the offense carries a fine of RM10,000 ($2,300) or a prison term of up to two years.

Despite the dangers, poisonous pufferfish are sold at many Malaysian wet markets, experts said. “It’s considered exotic and tends to attract consumers,” said Aileen Tan, a marine biologist and director at the Universiti Sains Malaysia Centre for Marine and Coastal Studies.

“Once pufferfish have been cleaned and sold as slices, it is nearly impossible for the public to know the type of fish that they purchased,” Tan warned. “As for sellers, it is debatable on their (part) if they are aware (of the risks).”

“There needs to be more awareness about the risks of consuming puffer fish – maybe authorities need to look at special certifications for vendors and suppliers,” she said.

Commonly referred to as ‘fugu’ – the Japanese term for pufferfish – pufferfish meat is enjoyed as a highly-priced delicacy despite containing deadly poison.

The fish’s organs, as well as skin, blood and bones, contain high concentrations of a deadly poison known as tetrodotoxin. Ingestion can rapidly cause tingling around the mouth and dizziness, which may be followed by convulsions, respiratory paralysis and death, medical experts say.

It is most commonly served in high-end Tokyo restaurants as sashimi and hot pot ingredients but has also caught on in popularity in countries like South Korea and Singapore, where dedicated fugu restaurants operate.

Under Japanese law, fugu chefs must undergo extensive apprenticeships of up to three years before they are licensed and allowed to handle and prepare the fish for food. Incorrectly prepared fugu has been found to be one of the most frequent causes of food poisoning in Japan, according to its health ministry.

There is no known antidote to the poison.

Despite the danger and risks, fugu has grown in popularity especially among gourmets and thrill seekers and is now also eaten countries outside Japan – at times, unregulated. In 2020, food poisoning killed three people in the Philippines after they ate pufferfish from a local barbecue stand.

The Malaysian health ministry said 58 poisoning incidents involving pufferfish consumption, including 18 deaths, were reported in the country between 1985 and 2023.

Photos shared by Ng on Facebook showed two pufferfish cooked by the couple – fried, headless and served on plates.

Their deaths sparked a public outcry and outpouring of sympathy, authorities are investigating who sold them the fish.

“The state district health office has opened investigations under the Food Act 1983… and carried out an investigation on the ground to identify the supplier, wholesaler and seller of the pufferfish,” Ling Tian Soon, chief of the Johor Health and Unity Committee, said in a statement issued Sunday.

He added that his health department would be holding discussions with the Fisheries Development Authority of Malaysia, a government agency overseeing seafood supplies in the country as well as local universities with fishery expertise.

“Information on pufferfish has also been posted on the Health Ministry’s Food Safety and Quality Facebook page,” Ling said.

“We urge the public to be careful when choosing their food, especially if it has known risks.”

Russian crude oil unloaded in Ghana after 6-week wait

The tanker Theseus offloaded its cargo of Russian crude into storage tanks at Ghana’s Tema oil refinery over the weekend, after being anchored full off the port since February 24 as it awaited permission to dock.

Vessel-tracking data monitored by Bloomberg show the ship left its initial anchorage Thursday morning and moored at the single-point mooring on Friday afternoon. The SPM is connected to storage tanks at the refinery by a sub-sea pipeline.

The tanker left the SPM on Monday morning, with its draft indicating it had discharged its cargo. It loaded about 600,000 barrels of crude from the Black Sea port of Novorossiysk in late January and is the first observed Russian shipment to the West African country in at least four years, the data show.

Tanker unloads Russian crude in Ghana after a 6-week wait

Ghana’s National Petroleum Authority granted a delivery period for the cargo to be unloaded, but national security considerations held up the process, according to people familiar with the matter. When the tanker was en route, the head of the NPA said the shipment would be blocked if it were bound for the country.

Clearance was given for the tanker after claims that the cargo was from Kazakhstan, one of the people said. A port agent report for Novorossiysk and data from data intelligence firms Vortexa and Kpler showed it originated from Russia.

The Tema refinery, Ghana’s only major crude processing plant, has been shut for about two years, although the government has given assurances that it will resume this year.

The Accra-based Institute for Energy Security identified Platon Gas Oil Ghana Ltd. as the purchaser of the cargo. The company, which operates a small refinery adjacent to the refinery, leased storage tanks at its larger neighbor, IES Executive Director Nana Amoasi VII previously said in an interview with Ghana’s Citi Newsroom. It would take at least six months for Platon to process the crude, he added.

  • Govt to increase school feeding grant

Govt to increase school feeding grant

Government will soon increase school feeding grants from the current 97 pesewas, Head of Public Relations at Ghana School Feeding Programme (GSFP), Siiba Alfa, has assured.

He said though the final determination on the exact amount to give to the caterers had delayed a bit since the announcement for increment was made, the government was working in consultation with the relevant decision-making bodies and partners to arrive at a mutually acceptable figure that would meet the current standards of living.

Some angry school feeding caterers staged a protest against the government in Kumasi last Monday and stormed the office of the Ashanti Region Minister, Simon Osei-Mensah, in all-red attires to demand increment and payment of their “three terms’ arrears”.

They had threatened to stop cooking for the beneficiary children until the government heeds to their demand for payment of their three terms’ arrears and increment in the feeding grant per child from the current 97pesewas

    Approval of Grant Increment

Mr Siiba stated emphatically that the “government had already approved a proposal submitted to Cabinet through the Gender Ministry for an increase in the school feeding grant. The increment, he said, was captured in the 2023 budget statement and was announced by the Finance Minister”.

    Appeal to caterers

The Public Relations Manager, in an interview with the media, appealed passionately to the caterers in the Ashanti Region and other regions threatening to embark on a sit-down strike to rescind their decision.

“We want to appeal to our dear caterers who are threatening to go on nationwide strike to exercise restraint, and cooperate with the processes leading to the payment of their 3rd term of 2022 arrears,” Mr. Siiba said.

    Alleged three terms’ arrears

Conversely, Mr Siiba refuted the claims by a section of the aggrieved caterers that the government is presently owing them for three continuous terms.

He revealed that the government together with the GSFP Management just in April finished paying the caterers for the 2nd term of 2022 with an amount of GH¢200 million even before they staged the protest in Kumasi.

As it stands now, the government owes the caterers only 3rd term of 2022 and 1st term of 2023 which just ended.

“We are in the second week of the 2nd term of 2023 and per our policy, caterers are supposed to pre-finance the cooking until the end of the term before they can be paid what is due them for the 2nd term of 2023. So, the caterers are owed only 2 terms,” he insisted.

    3rd term of 2022 payment

Mr. Siiba reiterated that the GSFP, in collaboration with the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, is working on the necessary documentations to ensure that payment for the 3rd term of 2022 is effected as soon as possible.

The Head of Public Relations of the Programme admitted that the frequent delays in the payment of arrears were seriously affecting the caterers and keeping majority of them in debt for a long time.

He also admitted that most of the caterers are unable to sleep in their homes or go to certain markets because they are always being hunted by their suppliers and creditors due to the delay in the payment.

He, however, attributed the phenomenon to the current economic challenges.

He also commended the government for its demonstrable commitment to salvaging the situation despite the inherent economic difficulties the country is facing.

    Deduction of non-cooking days

On the other hand, Siiba Alfa reacted to the complaints of deductions in the payments of some caterers.

According to him, the deduction is called non-cooking days, and that, “it affects only those who were unable to cook for a number of days for whatever reasons in an academic term”.

He said that the non-cooking days are deducted by the government to ensure value for money and to also serve as checks and balances in the School Feeding Programme.

Meanwhile, Mr. Siiba urged any caterer who feels that she or he has been wrongfully deducted to contact their School Feeding Zonal and Regional Coordinators with copies of their daily record forms for immediate rectification or correction.

A daycare center in Blumenau, a city in southern Brazil, was attacked with an ax, leaving four kids dead and four more hurt.

Three boys and a girl who were killed were between the ages of 5 and 7, according to the neighborhood police.

Santa Catarina‘s governor, Jorginho Mello, announced the arrest of a male suspect through Twitter.

The suspect, a 25-year-old man, allegedly leaped over a wall onto the daycare center’s playground before attacking the kids, a police official told CNN Brasil.

Mello expressed his solidarity with the victims.

“May God comfort the hearts of all families in this time of deep sorrow,” he said.

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva also gave his condolences.

“There is no greater pain than that of a family that loses its children or grandchildren, even more so in an act of violence against innocent and defenseless children,” Lula wrote on Twitter.

  • Beijing and northern China affected by sandstorm for the fourth time in one month

Beijing and northern China affected by sandstorm for the fourth time in one month

For the fourth time in a month, a strong sandstorm has covered Beijing and the northeastern parts of China, forcing some locals to stay inside to avoid the toxic air.

Pictures from Monday showed the Chinese capital covered in an orange haze that persisted into Tuesday, though the situation has started to improve.

Beijing authorities recommended healthy adults to refrain from outdoor exercise and told youngsters and the elderly to stay inside.
Also, residents were urged to close their windows and put in face shields and masks.

On Monday, the air quality index soared to “severely polluted” levels, according to Beijing Municipal Ecological and Environmental Monitoring Center.

Concentrations of PM10 particles exceeded 1,321 micrograms per cubic meter at 9 p.m. on Monday, according to the center – almost 30 times the daily average guideline of 45 micrograms per cubic meter set by the World Health Organization.

PM10 are particles of pollution that are less than 10 micrometers in diameter and can irritate your eyes and nose and travel to your lungs.

Even smaller particles referred to as PM2.5 can travel deeper into your lungs and potentially enter your bloodstream. Levels of PM2.5 have been “hazardous” in Beijing for some of the past 48 hours, according to the Air Quality Index, which monitors real-time air quality in major cities worldwide.

Beijing is regularly hit with sandstorms in the spring with the smog made worse by rising industrial activity and rapid deforestation throughout northern China.

The latest sandstorm is the fourth to hit the country since March 10, and the eighth since the start of the year, state media reported.

The most severe sandstorm so far this year occurred on March 22, when PM10 particles hit 1,667 micrograms per cubic meter, according to the Beijing Municipal Ecological and Environmental Monitoring Center.

This time, the affected areas stretched as far south as Shanghai to parts of Heilongjiang, the country’s northernmost province, according to China’s Central Meteorological Observatory.

Other areas affected included Xinjiang, Inner Mongolia, Gansu, Ningxia, Shanxi, Hebei, Tianjin, Shandong, Henan, Jiangsu, Anhui and Hubei, according to the national observatory.

China’s National and Grassland Administration said sand and dust from the southern part of Mongolia and the western part of Inner Mongolia were carried southeast by air currents, triggering the present storm.

One Chinese internet user on Weibo, China’s heavily censored equivalent of Twitter, complained about the pungent smell.

“It smells very earthy,” she said.

Another user compared the storm to the sci-fi film “Blade Runner” and urged others to “just wear protection” when going out.

  • Cancun police uncovered four bodies close to a hotel

Cancun police uncovered four bodies close to a hotel

According to Mexican authorities, the latest violent incident in the well-known tourist resort of Cancun resulted in the discovery of four bodies on Monday near a hotel.

The attorney general of the state of Quintana Roo reports that two people have been detained for their alleged involvement in the murders of four people.

Mexicans make up all of the fatalities, according to José Pablo Mathey Cruz, the municipality of Benito Juárez, where Cancun is located, secretary of public safety.

He said the suspects are allegedly engaged in the sale and distribution of narcotics, adding that footage from local security cameras and the joint work of local authorities helped lead to their arrest.

The prosecutor’s office confirmed earlier on Monday that three people had been found dead and an investigation was opened. Later, the office said they found a fourth body.

Polo Gallegos, a tourist who was in the area at the time of the shooting, told CNN en Español that he heard shots while at a nearby gym at around 10 a.m. local time.

“We heard the shots and they hid all of us in an office and they kept us there until the incident was over. Everyone kept us there until they secured the area, and right now there are police, the Navy, everyone, everyone in the beach area and it’s very uncomfortable for us,” he said.

The security situation in Cancun has deteriorated in recent years. In 2021, the Mexican government said the National Guard would permanently deploy to Cancun and its surrounding area following a rise in violence there linked to organized crime, Reuters reported.

There have been a series of violent incidents around the Caribbean coastal area. In early 2022, two people died after shots were fired in a hotel at Playa del Carmen, according to CNN en Español.

There were shootings reported in late 2021 in the tourist areas of Puerto Morelos and Cancun.

The State Department advises travelers to “exercise increased caution due to crime and kidnapping” in the state of Quintana Roo. The advisory says that violence and criminal activity may occur anywhere, “including in popular tourist destinations.”

“Travelers should maintain a high level of situational awareness, avoid areas where illicit activities occur, and promptly depart from potentially dangerous situations,” the advisory warns.

UN Security Council members leave after Russian accusation of war crimes

On Wednesday, during a speech by Maria Lvova-Belova, the Russian commissioner for children’s rights, delegations from many Western nations left the room in protest, accusing her of spreading “disinformation” about the conflict in Ukraine.

Lvova-Belova virtually participated in the informal UN Security Council meeting in New York that Russia summoned to address what it called the “evacuation” of Ukrainian children from the combat area.
On April 1, Russia assumed the rotating Security Council presidency.

Last month, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued an arrest warrant for Lvova-Belova and Russian President Vladimir Putin in connection with an alleged plan to deport Ukrainian children to Russia, an allegation that has been covered by CNN and other media outlets.

Lvova-Belova is “one of the most highly involved figures in Russia’s deportation and adoption of Ukraine’s children, as well as in the use of camps for ‘integrating’ Ukraine’s children into Russia’s society and culture,” according to the Yale Humanitarian Research Lab’s Conflict Observatory.

Ahead of Wednesday’s meeting, the US ambassador to the UN, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, told reporters: “As Russia takes on the presidency of the Security Council, we will use every opportunity to push back on their using their perch in the chair to spread disinformation and to use their chair to push support of their efforts.”

“So, it’s for that reason today that we have opposed … a woman who has been charged with war crimes, who has been involved in deporting and removal of children from their homes to Russia,” she continued.

Thomas-Greenfield added that the United States, like the United Kingdom, had blocked the webcast of the meeting, so Lvova-Belova was not given “an international podium to spread disinformation and to try to defend her horrible actions.”

Representatives of the US, UK, Albania and Malta then walked out of the conference room as Lvova-Belova was speaking. Russia’s UN envoy, Vassily Nebenzia, described the move as “a clear demonstration of their indifference to the fate of the children of Donbas and Ukrainian children.”

The United Nations Security Council is tasked with maintaining global peace and security, and its presidency rotates alphabetically among its 15 member nations. The body is controlled by its five permanent members, including the US and Russia.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba described Russia assuming the council presidency on April 1, as its brutal invasion of Ukraine stretches into a second year, as “the world’s worst April Fool’s joke.”

“The country which systematically violates all fundamental rules of international security is presiding over a body whose only mission is to safeguard and protect international security,” Kuleba said.

A Security Council president is supposed to stay neutral. But in its new role, Russia can maneuver meetings on Ukraine and use the month to portray the US and other Western countries as making false accusations against Russia.

“GOIL has meanwhile taken delivery of enough products and has just yesterday, taken adequate steps to dispatch over two million litres to our fuel stations experiencing the shortages. Over two million litres more will be dispatched today.”

GOIL said it intends to release more stock to the affected stations in the next two days to augment supplies.

We’re working on a new Data Zone bundle for customers- MTN

Telecommunication Network MTN Ghana has apologised to customers for limiting its communication on why its Data Zone bundle was suspended.

MTN Ghana effective Wednesday, 5 April 2023, suspended its Data Zone bundle.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, 12 April 2023, the telecommunication network explained what necessitated the suspension.

  • US inflation at 5%, the lowest it has been since 2021

US inflation at 5%, the lowest it has been since 2021

US inflation is currently at 5%, the lowest inflation has been since 2021, when prices started to climb.

The monthly consumer price index (CPI), which measures the price of a basket of goods and services, for March showed prices made a decent jump down over the last year. In February, inflation stood at 6%, already a steep decline from its peak of 9.1% in June.

But core inflation, which does not include volatile energy and food prices, has remained steady – a sign that the decrease could be attributed to the soaring gas prices seen last spring, near the beginning of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. March’s core inflation rate over the last year was 5.6%, compared with February’s 5.5%.

Housing is the largest contributing factor to price increases over the last few months, rising 0.4% over the last month with an 8.2% rise over the last year. The uptick in housing prices offsets the impact that decreasing energy prices, which went down 6.4% over the last year, has on the overall inflation rate. Food prices remained stable in March, with no changes over the last month.

Despite the overall cooling of prices, this closely watched inflation report will probably not sway officials at the Federal Reserve, who have been eyeing further interest rate hikes in their aggressive campaign to lower inflation.

Even as the overall inflation rate is on a downward trend, economists are expecting the Fed to continue raising interest rates, despite the volatility increased rates could bring to the economy. In March, the Fed increased rates by a quarter point to a range of 4.75% to 5%, a move largely seen as both assertive and conciliatory in the direct aftermath of the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank (SVB). The Fed has increased interest rates nine consecutive times over the last year, raising rates by a quarter point up to three-quarter points at a time.

In March, the Fed chair, Jerome Powell, said that the central bank was closely monitoring the impact of SVB’s collapse but was still adamant on getting inflation down to a target goal of 2%.

“We’re looking at what’s happening among the banks and asking: ‘Is there going to be some tightening in credit conditions?’ And then we’re thinking about that as effectively doing the same thing that rate hikes do. So in a way, that substitutes for rate hikes,” Powell said. “At the end of the day, we will do enough to bring inflation down to 2%. No one should doubt that.”

In addition to March’s CPI data showing stubborn core inflation, the jobs report from last month also showed signs of continued jobs increases, another key data point the Fed uses to determine interest rate increase.

The labor market added 236,000 jobs in March that, while still an overall increase, shows a slight cooling off of the market. The unemployment rate dropped 0.1% and stands at 3.5%. The data shows that the jobs market is slowing at a measured pace, something the Fed will probably see as a sign that the economy can handle future interest rate hikes, even as concerns over a recession loom.

The Fed will have its next board meeting, where it will announce any upcoming interest rate increase, on 2 May and 3 May.

Actress/TikToker, Martina Dwamena, popularly known in showbiz as Asantewaa has opened up about how she narrowly escaped divorce.

Asantewaa is blessed with a husband who respects her job as an actress and Tiktok influencer, the reason he pays no heed to cheap gossip and reports from critics who have attempted to paint a bad picture of his wife, the actress has said.

The popular influencer has narrated how important it is for public figures to build trust in their relationships. This she believes helps create a healthy relationship with no doubt.

In an April 2023 interview with Kwaku Manu on the ‘Aggressive Show’, Asantewaa noted that her husband has never talked her out of acting although some men are quick to interfere in their partner’s profession for fear of them cheating.

“Some partners prevent their wives from acting but my husband met me on a movie set. He had come to wash his car at a washing bay where we were shooting.

“I always say this, a man can leave at any time. Don’t abandon your passion. Find a better way to explain things to him. You can build some structures on what not to do. If he trusts you on whatever you do, that’s it,” she admonished.

Asantewaa added that there have been several attempts to collapse her marriage. She revealed that her husband constantly receives reports from people who accuse her of infidelity.

She narrated how her husband onetime came to a hotel to confirm whom she was with after a tip-off.

“If you win your husband’s heart, he will not pay heed to rumours and negative reports, screenshots, and videos gossips bring to him.

“One time, someone gave hint to my husband that I was in a hotel with my manager. The good thing is that I had already informed him that I was with my manager and when he came to see for himself, he found me where I said I was…all that matters is trust,” she disclosed.

Kenya: Loan app slapped with $3.7k over debt shaming

The Kenyan authorities have penalised an online lender $3,700 (£3,400) over allegations of intruding and sharing customers’ personal data.

It followed complaints lodged against it by users over personal data breaches.

The Office of Data Protection said it received close to 150 complaints against Whitepath Ltd, alleging the lender’s mobile app was mining phone contacts data to engage in debt-shaming practices.

The lender’s staff were also accused of harassing the complainants and their friends and relations through phone contacts obtained irregularly.

A company that sells office space, Regus Kenya, was also fined a similar amount after being accused of spamming complainants despite efforts to make them stop.

Kenya’s data commissioner, Immaculate Kassait, said that data protection was the responsibility of every data controller and processor.

Warren Buffett explains the surprise sale of stake in Taiwan’s TSMC

Warren Buffett says geopolitical tensions were “a consideration” in the decision to sell most of Berkshire Hathaway’s shares in global chip giant TSMC, which is based in Taiwan.

The 92-year-old “Oracle of Omaha” shed light on the investment call in a Tuesday interview with Japanese news agency Nikkei. He was quoted as sayiing that TSMC was a well-managed company but that Berkshire had “better places” to deploy its capital.

In February, Berkshire Hathaway (BRKA) revealed that it had sold 86% of its shares in TSMC, which were purchased for $4.1 billion just months before.

The quick sale was considered unusual because the billionaire is known for making longer term bets. The size of the purchase suggested that the initial purchase was most likely made personally by Buffett himself, rather than one of his portfolio managers, Reuters reported.

TSMC is considered a national treasure in Taiwan and supplies semiconductors to tech giants including Apple (AAPL) and Qualcomm (QCOM). It mass produces the most advanced semiconductors in the world, components that are vital to the smooth running of everything from smartphones to washing machines.

The company is perceived as being so valuable to the global economy, as well as to China — which claims Taiwan as its own territory despite having never controlled it — that it is sometimes even referred to as forming part of a “silicon shield” against a potential military invasion by Beijing.

TSMC’s presence is seen as providing a strong incentive to the West to defend Taiwan against any attempt by China to take it by force.

This week, tensions soared across the Taiwan Strait after China simulated “joint precision strikes” on the island during a series of military exercises.

Beijing launched the drills on Saturday, a day after Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen returned from a 10-day visit to Central America and the United States where she met US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy.

Chinese officials described the drills as “a serious warning against the Taiwan separatist forces’ collusion with external forces, and a necessary move to defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity.”

Beijing conducted similar large-scale military exercises around Taiwan last August, after then-US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited the island.

Taiwan and China have been governed separately since the end of a civil war more than seven decades ago, in which the defeated Nationalists fled to Taipei.

Supply chain failures behind fuel scarcity, 2m litres released to public – GOIL

GOIL has disclosed the cause of a recent fuel shortage at some of its stations across the country.

The Oil Marketing Company attributed the fuel shortage which occurred during the Easter season to disruptions in supply chain.

A statement by GOIL apologised for the inconvenience caused and revealed that over two million litres of fuel have been dispatched to stations experiencing the shortages.

GOIL added that over one million litres will be dispatched today.

“GOIL wishes to acknowledge to the public, especially its valued customers, that there have been shortages of its super XP RON 95 at some of its stations.

“The shortages which were experienced during the Easter holidays were because of operational challenges occasioned by supply disruptions.

“GOIL has meanwhile taken delivery of enough products and, has just yesterday, taken adequate steps to dispatch over two million litres to our fuel stations experiencing the shortages. Over two million litres more will be dispatched today.”

GOIL added that it intends to release more stocks to the affected stations in the next two days to augment supplies.

Former Scottish first minister’s husband detained over a party funding inquiry

In connection with an inquiry into the funding and finances of the Scottish National Party, Peter Murrell, the husband of former Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, has been detained on Wednesday.

After serving in the position for more than 20 years, Murrell, 58, resigned as the SNP’s chief executive last month after Sturgeon’s abrupt resignation as first minister in February.

According to a statement from Police Scotland, a 58-year-old male was “arrested as a suspect” and is currently being questioned by investigators.

The statement also stated that “officers are conducting searches at a number of homes as part of the investigation.”

He was later released without charge “pending further investigation,” according to Police Scotland, after spending nearly 12 hours in custody.

Police Scotland has been investigating the SNP’s handling of money that was slated for Scottish independence campaigning, according to PA Media.

A spokesperson for the SNP said the party would not comment on a live investigation, but it “has been cooperating fully with this investigation and will continue to do so.”

The party’s governing body has agreed to a review of governance and transparency, the spokesperson added.

The SNP has led the Scottish government since 2007, but momentum behind its goal of breaking away from the UK has slowed recently as the party’s polling has dipped and political headaches have mounted.

Murrell and Sturgeon have been key figures in the Scottish independence movement for years.

Sturgeon served as the country’s first minister for eight years, but dramatically announced that she would resign from her post on February 15.

At the time, Sturgeon said she knew the “time is now” for her to stand down, adding that the move was “right for me, for my party and for the country.”

Her announcement sparked a leadership battle which was won by Humza Yousaf, a race which exposed divisions within the party.

  • ECG recovers about GH38 million in debt in the Central Region

ECG recovers about GH38 million in debt in the Central Region

The Central Regional Directorate of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has mobilized about GH¢38 million from debtors in the Region. The amount received was part of the GH¢255 million owed by the state agencies, businesses and individuals in their catchment districts.

The ECG is yet to retrieve about GH¢217 million debts as part of its nationwide revenue mobilization exercise.

Boye Mahmar Awal, the Regional Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the ECG disclosed such information in an interview with GhanaWeb in Cape Coast. In the Region, he stated that the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) has remained the highest debtor and efforts were made to retrieve the money.

He said over 1,000 customers have been disconnected so far across their ten operational districts in the Region. Illegal connections detected throughout the exercise was minimal and the ECG continues to advocate against the practice.

“The ECG is embarking on a revenue mobilisation drive to retrieve a debt of GH¢5.7 billion across the country, of which customers in the Volta and Oti regions owe about GH¢219 million. The exercise being undertaken operational districts across the region and was yielding the desired results, with two more weeks to go”, he said.

Awal reiterated that ECG never took delight in disconnecting its clients but as a business entity, which bought power to trade for profit, it could crush when unpaid bills are not collected.

He said disconnections at the last resort was carried out to prevent the customer from accruing more debt and to enable the Company to gather more revenue to keep the electricity supply chain running.

The PRO advised the public to desist from connecting illegally since its a criminal offence to steal power, which when found attracts a jail term.

  • Syria’s coffers received billions thanks to a little-known medicine

Syria’s coffers received billions thanks to a little-known medicine

Analysts speculate that Syria may be using a highly addictive substance as a negotiating chip as it seeks to improve relations with its neighbors after more than a decade of isolation.

Once the majority of the international community cut off Syria’s economy as a result of its harsh suppression of an uprising in 2011, Captagon, a narcotic that is comparatively unknown outside the Middle East, assisted Syria in becoming a narco-state.

Fenethylline, often known as captagon, is a synthetic stimulant with effects similar to amphetamines. It is the target of an increasing number of drug busts in the Middle East.
According to experts, Syria produces the vast majority of the world’s captagons, with the Gulf region serving as its main market.

The growth of the industry has raised alarms in the international community. Last year, the US introduced the 2022 US Captagon Act, which linked the trade to the Syrian regime and called it a “transnational security threat.”

After more than a decade of boycotting him, Syria’s Arab neighbors are now in talks to bring President Bashar al-Assad in from the cold. The Syrian leader has been received in some Arab capitals, but he is yet to be awarded the ultimate normalization with Saudi Arabia, one of Syria’s staunchest foes – and the biggest market for its drugs.

Following the deadly February 6 earthquake that struck southern Turkey and northern Syria, Saudi relief planes landed for the first time in a decade at regime-controlled airports. And last month, Saudi state media reported Riyadh was in talks with Damascus to resume providing consular services between the two countries.

Analysts say captagon is likely to be high on the agenda in attempts at normalization.

Saudi media has been sounding the alarm lately over the rise in drug use. In September, Saudi authorities announced the largest seizure of illicit drugs in the country’s history after nearly 47 million amphetamine pills were hidden in a flour shipment and seized at a warehouse in the capital Riyadh. Millions more pills have been intercepted since. The UN says amphetamine seizures in the region refer predominantly to captagon.

“Captagon has been touted as a ‘card’ in rapprochement talks between the Syrian regime and counterparts pursuing normalization,” said Caroline Rose, director of the New Lines Institute’s Project on the Captagon Trade in Washington, DC.

“The regime has been leveraging its agency over the captagon trade, signaling to states considering normalization that they could reduce captagon trafficking as a goodwill gesture,” Rose told CNN.

Exported by several actors, including Syrian smugglers, Lebanon’s Hezbollah and pro-Iranian Iraqi militias, “the captagon smuggling is worth more than Syria’s legal export,” said Vanda Felbab-Brown, a fellow at the Brookings Institution in Washington DC and an expert on the topic. Hezbollah has denied ties to any drug trades.

The United Kingdom, which last month imposed new sanctions on Syrians connected to the trade, said the Assad regime has benefited from the captagon trade to the tune of $57 billion. It described it as a “financial lifeline” for Assad that is “worth approximately three times the combined trade of the Mexican (drug) cartels.”

Syrian state media regularly reports on captagon drug busts, saying that the interior ministry is cracking down on its trade as well as that of other narcotics.

Salah Malkawi, a Jordanian analyst who follows the trade closely, says that despite Syria’s denial, it is impossible for the drug to cross borders without the involvement of several actors closely tied to Assad and his regime.

“Commanders of militias, security agencies, military forces are involved in the drug smuggling operation,” Malkawi said. “The drugs cannot reach these areas without passing through dozens of barriers and checkpoints that fall under the Fourth Division, which is under the leadership of Maher al-Assad, the brother of the Syrian president.”

“I’ve spoken to several (smugglers),” he said. “They have received military training … using war tactics … to carry out sophisticated raids.”

The Syrian government didn’t respond to CNN’s request for comment.

Jordan, which supported anti-regime groups at the start of the Syrian civil war, has in recent months also been on the road to rapprochement with Assad.

Its foreign minister this year made his first visit to Damascus since the start of the Syrian civil war and has been sending humanitarian aid following the February 6 earthquake.

Jordan has been directly impacted by Syria’s captagon trade due to the prevalence of its use in border regions in the northeast of the country, said Saud Al-Sharafat, a former brigadier general in the Jordanian General Intelligence Directorate, as well as founder of the Shorufat ِCenter for the Study of Globalization and Terrorism in Amman, Jordan.

“There is also the high cost of securing the borders and the increase in pressure on the armed forces and security services,” Al-Sharafat told CNN.

He welcomed the US Captagon Act as “the first serious international effort” to prevent the regime from expanding its use of the drug “to destabilize security in the region and the world.” Syria could potentially flood Europe and Western countries with the drug through Turkey and use it as a bargaining chip against them, he said.

But even if agreements are reached between Syria and its neighbors over stopping exports of the drug, experts say it is unlikely that Assad will fully abandon the trade.

“That’s asking the key trafficker to stop his business,” Felbab-Brown said. “It is very unlikely that the Assad regime would give up on its crucial revenue source.”

At best, he may offer cosmetic solutions to the problem, experts say, promising tighter restrictions and tougher law enforcement at home on producers and traders, whom the regime denies it is involved with.

Rose of the New Lines Institute said that the regime may maintain its captagon businesses as a form of long-term leverage against its neighbors, while maintaining “some level of plausible deniability with the trade, blaming opposition forces and non-state actors, while undertaking a wave of cosmetic seizures at home to shift the blame away from the government.”

Israeli’s spy agency encouraged protests against government, leaked US report says

A leaked US intelligence report about Israel has sparked outrage in Jerusalem. The report, produced by the CIA and sourced to signals intelligence, says that Israel’s main intelligence agency, the Mossad, had been encouraging protests against the country’s new government – “including several explicit calls to action.” The Israeli Prime Minister’s Office responded on the Mossad’s behalf Sunday morning, calling the report “mendacious and without any foundation whatsoever.” It added: “The Mossad and its senior officials did not – and do not – encourage agency personnel to join the demonstrations against the government, political demonstrations or any political activity.”

    • Background: Highly classified Pentagon documents leaked online in recent weeks have provided a rare window into how the US spies on allies and foes alike, deeply rattling US officials, who fear the revelations could jeopardize sensitive sources and compromise important foreign relationships. Some of the documents, which US officials say are authentic, expose the extent of US eavesdropping on key allies, including South Korea, Israel and Ukraine.
    • Why it matters: Israel has faced months of protests against a controversial plan by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s right-wing government to weaken the judiciary. The protests, which were supported by some elements of the military and security services, have slightly waned since Netanyahu announced a delay of the plan two weeks ago, but the country remains deeply divided on the matter.

Saudi and Omani delegations arrive in Yemen for talks with Houthi leaders

Delegations of Saudi and Omani negotiators arrived in Yemen’s capital Sana’a on Saturday for talks with Houthi leaders, according to the Houthi-run news agency Saba. The Saudi and Omani delegations will meet with the head of the Houthi Supreme Political Council, Mahdi Al-Mashat, to discuss “lifting the siege with all its repercussions, stopping the aggression, and restoring all the rightful rights of the Yemeni people, including the payment of salaries of all state employees from oil and gas revenues,” Saba reported, citing sources. Houthi officials also said 13 prisoners released by Saudi authorities as part of a prisoner swap had arrived at Sanaa International Airport on Saturday.

    • Background: The talks – involving top level officials – are part of ongoing efforts to negotiate a permanent ceasefire agreement between Saudi Arabia and the Iran-aligned Houthi movement who have been at war in Yemen since 2015. The discussions come following a surprise Chinese-brokered rapprochement between regional arch-rivals Saudi Arabia and Iran in March, which has raised hopes for an end to hostilities.
    • Why it matters: Yemen’s war is seen as the main proxy battle between Iran and Saudi Arabia. Since the Saudi-led war in the country started, the Houthis have launched hundreds of missiles on Saudi Arabia and, to a lesser degree, the United Arab Emirates. A ceasefire would bring calm to Saudi Arabia’s 1,300-kilometer (808-mile) border with Yemen as the kingdom focuses its effort on economic diversification.

Controversial Israeli minister joins thousands of settlers marching to illegal outpost in occupied West Bank

Israel’s far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir joined thousands of Israeli settlers marching to an illegal outpost in the occupied West Bank on Monday afternoon. The rally was organized by activist groups who want to legalize the outpost at Evyatar. A spokesperson for the Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas described the march as an “invasion of settler militias, led by ministers from the Israeli occupation government,” that “does not change the fact that it is Palestinian land,” according to the Palestinian News Agency WAFA.

    • Background: Israeli settlers left Evyatar in 2021 after a deal with the government of then-prime minister Naftali Bennett, which saw them leave on condition that the buildings would remain. Evyatar sits on a hilltop known locally as Jabal Subeih. The site is seen as strategic, a high point along a corridor linking Tel Aviv to the Jordan Valley.
    • Why it matters: With a new Israeli government now in power, the settlers are campaigning to legalize the outpost. The march comes after the United States last month summoned Israel’s ambassador in Washington over the Israeli parliament’s vote to roll back 2005 legislation that previously ordered the evacuation of four Israeli settlements established in the northern West Bank.

Abu Dhabi technology company e& has agreed to take a 50.3% stake in a super app managed by Careem, Uber’s Middle East subsidiary, in a transaction valued at $400 million, Reuters cited the company as saying on Monday. The ride-hailing business will be separated from the Careem super app business and will be fully owned by Uber. The super app offers services outside its core ride-hailing business such as food delivery, bike rentals, digital payments and courier services.

A video of an imam leading prayer in a mosque as a surprise furry guest abruptly joins his congregation went viral on social media, with many praising the Muslim prayer leader for keeping his cool as the cat climbs up his chest and rests on his shoulder.

The clip of imam Walid Mehsas, which was captured at a mosque in Algeria, garnered millions of views and was picked up by international media channels.

The video even triggered a cartoon drawing of the moment by artist Karim Saidi, which was also shared widely on social media, and started a debate about Islam’s position on cats. Unlike dogs, Islam considers cats to be clean enough to be allowed into mosques, and the felines can often be seen roaming around worshippers.

Speaking in a video published on his official Facebook page, Mehsas on Saturday said the incident was spontaneous. He also urged worshipers to remember that Islam dictates mercy towards all animals, and denied rumors that the Algerian government rewarded him for his kindness to the animal.

  • Demand for banknotes has reduced in 20 years -Banknote maker De La Rue

Demand for banknotes has reduced in 20 years -Banknote maker De La Rue

Banknote maker De La Rue has said that demand for cash around the world is at its lowest level in 20 years.

The company, which designs a third of banknotes globally, said demand for cash had fallen since the pandemic when central banks stocked up on currency.

It said the downturn would hit its full-year profits, which are set to fall short of expectations.

The firm is having to renegotiate its loan agreements with its banks due to the tougher trading conditions.

“The demand for banknotes has been at the lowest levels for over 20 years, resulting in a low order book going into fiscal year 2024,” De La Rue said in a trading update.

Its boss, Clive Vacher, told the BBC that central banks had stepped up orders for bank notes during Covid as they always did in economic crises. But they were now delaying new orders as they ran through their stock.

“They always do that when there are crises, because of the security that having cash around them has,” he said.

“So we expected a downturn, which has indeed happened, but that downturn is probably extending deeper and probably for an extra 9-12 months than we’d normally expect in the normal cycle of things,” he said.

It comes as consumer use of cash is in decline in many countries as more transactions are made online or with cards, and particularly contactless payments.

De La Rue said there are signs of recovery but is not sure when that will happen. Shares in De la Rue fell by as much as 30% on Wednesday after it published its trading update.

The 200 year-old firm said it was in talks with its banks over its loan agreements because of lower profits and higher interest rates, following a succession of rises by the Bank of England.Media caption,

Alan Turing £50 banknote being printed

De La Rue now expects its full-year profit to be in the “low £20m range” while the interest costs on its loans has risen.

It said it is “in discussions with its lending banks in relation to seeking an amendment to its banking covenants, reflecting the revised outlook and also reflecting the increase in the company’s funding costs resulting from higher Bank of England base rates”.

De La Rue employs 1,800 people globally and works with 140 countries.

All current Bank of England banknotes are printed by the firm at a site in Debden, Essex.

The scene inside the De La Rue banknote printing hall is a mixture of the mundane and the surreal.

The factory floor feels very familiar with hi-tech machinery, pallet carriers and staff that appear typical of many production centres.

But the “product”, as it is called, turns your head. Millions of banknotes, in various stages of production, are here. Obviously, the security is extremely tight.

So many banknotes printed every day feels at odds with our everyday lives – when, for many people, cash use is a rarity as we pay for goods and services with cards and smartphones.

De La Rue is also printing the new banknotes featuring the image of King Charles, although those will not enter circulation until the middle of next year.

The company, which is headquartered in Basingstoke, Hampshire, has contracts with central banks around the world.

For some of those banks, it prints money, while for others, it provides polymer for banknotes well as other services.

  • Ukraine getting ready to retaliate against Russia

Ukraine getting ready to retaliate against Russia

Weather the storm, wear out the adversary, and then respond.

Since the winter, prominent US and NATO officials have repeated the Ukrainian military’s catchphrase, which has been in use for months.

    So much for that notion.
However, can it be put into action, and if so, how, when, and where?
When they scan the 1,000-kilometer front line for Russian weak spots, the Ukrainians may not even be aware of this as of yet, just as they did when they abruptly launched their surprise onslaught in Kharkiv’s northeast in September.

But they are aware it will be a crucial chapter in the conflict. Maj. Gen. Kyrylo Budanov, head of Ukraine’s Defense Intelligence, said in an interview last month that Russia and Ukraine will fight “a decisive battle this spring, and this battle will be the final one before this war ends.”

That suggests the Ukrainians may take their time to maximize capabilities. Predictions are a fool’s errand; there will be plenty of bluff and disinformation about intentions in the coming weeks. But preparations are well underway.

The essential preconditions for a Ukrainian counteroffensive include the completion of training and integration of new units, degrading the Russian rear, a resilient logistics chain and real-time intelligence.

The “intelligence picture will inform things like where there might be weaknesses in Russian defensive deployments, as well as locations of Russian HQ, logistics, and reserve force locations,” said Mick Ryan, formerly a general in the Australian army who was recently in Ukraine.

Ukraine is standing up several new corps, each of which would comprise several thousand troops. “Included in these will not only be new Western tanks, infantry fighting vehicles, wheeled vehicles and other equipment but also a lot of engineering equipment,” Ryan told CNN.

These units may be nearly ready.

“Ukrainian sources have already telegraphed that they’re forming or have formed six to nine new brigades for counteroffensives,” said Kateryna Stepanenko at the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) in Washington DC.

Ryan says such ambitious offensives consume large amounts of fuel, munitions, food, medical supplies and spare equipment. The logistics chain – which may be hampered by poor weather more than armor – is critically important.

Senior US and Ukrainian officers carried out “table-top” simulations last month. The Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Mark Milley, said: “The Ukrainians are moving things around on these maps to determine what is their best course of action, and they determine the advantages and disadvantages of the risks associated.”

One clue – though it may be well-camouflaged – will be operations to strike logistics hubs, rear bases and ammunition stores deep behind the Russians’ front lines, both with long-range Western weapons, such as HIMARS, and sabotage operations. There’s already been an uptick in such attacks in southern Zaporizhzhia and Crimea.

Ryan, who writes the Futura Doctrina newsletter, said: “We could reasonably expect offensive action probably of different scales in at least two (and possibly more) locations in the east and south,” not least to confuse the Russians about where the main thrust will occur.

The south represents the greater dividend: an opportunity to split the Russian land corridor to occupied Crimea and reclaim some of Ukraine’s best farmland. Apart from Mariupol, much of the south has suffered less destruction than the cities of eastern Ukraine.

A successful strike southwards would make Russia’s defense of parts of Kherson it still holds untenable. It could also pave the way for Ukraine to recover control of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, and the canal that supplies fresh water to Crimea.

But Stepanenko agrees it would be a mistake solely to focus on one area. Offensives in the east and south could be mutually supporting, posing the Russians additional logistics and deployment challenges.

A counterattack in the Bakhmut area by a well-prepared force might signal the beginning of offensive action. Last week, the commander of Ukrainian land forces, Colonel General Oleksandr Syrskyi, was in the Bakhmut area and said: “Our task is to destroy as many enemies as possible and create the conditions for us to launch an offensive.”

The Ukrainians are showing off the stream of Western hardware that’s begun to arrive to enhance their ground forces. They’ve been sending tank crews for training on Leopard 2s and Challenger tanks in Germany and the UK, respectively.

Their missile defenses are steadily improving, and with the deployment of Patriot batteries will improve further. The first group of Ukrainian soldiers to train on the Patriots are now back in Europe.

But integrating units will be critical.

“Ukraine needs to increase its capabilities for combined arms warfare ahead of their counteroffensive. This requires a high degree of coordination between various Ukrainian brigades and integrating fires to support maneuver,” said Stepanenko at ISW.

Such warfare has not traditionally been part of the Ukrainian playbook and is not learned overnight. While the sweep through Kharkiv last September was a triumph and exploited Russian deficiencies in the area, the slog to regain Kherson was far more costly in personnel and materiel.

Over the last few months, the Ukrainians have been receiving equipment vital for any offensive action: demolition munitions, mine clearance hardware, mobile bridging capabilities and MRAPs – mine resistant vehicles.

In addition, more than 4,000 Ukrainian soldiers have completed combined arms training in Germany, including two brigades equipped with US-supplied Bradley Fighting Vehicles and US-made Stryker vehicles.

Two motorized infantry battalions consisting of 1,200 Ukrainian soldiers are still being trained in Germany.

Training to use engineering equipment supplied by the US is also going to be essential. The latest package of US aid announced in March included armored vehicle-launched bridges, which would accompany advancing units — as well as demolition munitions.

“This is important because the fight to come will need the Ukrainians to engage in combined arms obstacle-crossing to break into and penetrate Russian defenses, which include mines, anti-tank ditches, dragons’ teeth and the enhancement of natural obstacles,” Ryan said.

He says “there is no military endeavor that is more difficult to plan, orchestrate and execute.”

Western aid has sought to address Ukraine’s key capability gap in mobile firepower.

“Armored personnel carriers and infantry fighting vehicles will help ensure Ukrainian mechanized infantry can deploy safely to the combat zone,” Stepanenko said.

Western tanks will act as the “tip of the spear” but the question is whether sufficient numbers have arrived to make a decisive difference. Open-source information suggests that fewer than 100 Western main battle tanks are in Ukraine.

Russia is of course acutely aware that Ukraine is planning fresh offensives. It has used the last several months to construct multiple layers of defense, especially in the south.

Ryan says that in addition the Russians likely have mobile counter-attack forces ready. Intelligence gathering and long-range strikes to degrade such units is an important element in Ukrainian planning.

Military historian Stephen Biddle writes that “shallow forward defenses can be ruptured with well-organized combined arms attacks, but deep defenses with meaningful reserves behind them still pose much harder problems for attackers.”

But Biddle also makes the point that the “best single predictor of outcomes in real warfare has … been the balance of skill and motivation on the two sides,” and this may augur well for the Ukrainians.

The Ukrainian armed forces have proved themselves agile, adaptable and innovative; most units have demonstrated high morale in the face of superior force. Over the past year, Western militaries have provided training in almost every facet of conflict, from tank warfare to logistics and leadership.

By contrast, Russia’s fall mobilization has not moved the needle much on the battlefield, and reports of dissent and poor leadership in a very top-down system suggest that the size of Russian capabilities may not be matched by performance.

Which brings us back to the exhaustion factor. For three months, Russian forces – including some of their best divisions – have been trying to break down Ukrainian defenses in four main zones. Apart from incremental gains in the Bakhmut area, they have made virtually no progress.

The quandary for the Russian high command is when and whether to tilt from offense to defense.

“At some point, [their offensives] are likely to culminate,” Ryan said. “They will need to decide whether they assume a more defensive posture in the coming weeks in order to absorb or respond to any Ukrainian offensives.”

Many constellations have to align if a Ukrainian counteroffensive is to succeed.

“They will want not only to surprise the Russians with the time and location of their main and supporting thrusts, but will want to generate an operational tempo that overwhelms the Russian ability to respond quickly or at the right time with the right force,” Ryan said.

Success in the early stages would generate momentum. “The Ukrainians only have to make one penetration of the Russian tactical defensive lines to then flow through a torrent of exploitation forces,” which “in turn could force large-scale Russian realignments and withdrawals of its forces,” Ryan added.

That’s what the United States hopes for. “What Ukraine wants to do at the first possible moment is to establish or create momentum and establish conditions on the battlefield that continue to be in its favor,” said Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin in February.

The Ukrainians know that having received armor and other equipment worth tens of billions of dollars, and training for thousands of their troops, they need to show results to sustain the faith and support of the coalition. Next year, the US goes into election mode, with all the distractions that is likely to bring – something not lost on Moscow as it seeks to draw out the conflict.

The Ukrainians will want to have everything tried and tested, rehearsed and rehearsed again, before committing themselves to what will likely be a pivotal episode in the conflict.

I had over 40 children with just one man by the age of 43

Mariam Nabatanzi was sold into marriage at 12 and gave birth to a set of twins a year later. Three more sets of twins followed – along with five sets of triplets and five sets of quadruplets.

Nabatanzi gave birth to 44 kids by age 40 – and only once to a single child. Doctors have told the woman from Uganda she has a rare medical condition that no family planning method can help.

She was told she had unusually large ovaries that released multiple eggs at once — a condition called hyperovulation.

The mom who now holds the world record for the most children has been warned by doctors that she could suffer severe health problems if she stops giving birth.

Apparently, the woman from Uganda, East Africa, has given birth to four sets of twins, five sets of triplets, and five sets of quadruplets.

Leaked intelligence rejected by an Egyptian official

According to reports by the Washington Post using a stolen US intelligence document, a senior Egyptian official denied that Egypt’s military had any plans to build 40,000 missiles for Russia, according to state-affiliated media.

Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, the president of Egypt, reportedly gave officials orders to keep manufacturing and shipping secret “to prevent difficulties with the West,” according to a leaked US intelligence document acquired by the Washington Post.

According to the Washington Post, the “top secret document” from February claims conversations between Sisi and senior Egyptian military officials about plans to supply Russia with artillery and ammunition while keeping the preparations a secret.

CNN has not seen the document cited by the Washington Post and is unable to confirm its authenticity.

The Egyptian official, unnamed by state-affiliated media, called the Washington Post report “informational absurdity” and said that Egypt follows a “balanced policy” with all international parties, Al Qahera News, a state-affiliated media outlet said. The statement was carried by several Egyptian state-affiliated news outlets.

Egypt is one of the world’s top recipients of US military aid, receiving $1.3 billion in military financing annually.

The White House also said it has no indication Egypt is providing Russia with deadly arms.

John Kirby, a spokesman for the US National Security Council, told reporters aboard Air Force One “we’ve seen no indication that Egypt is providing lethal weaponry capabilities to Russia.”

Kirby said Egypt remained “a significant security partner” and would remain so.

“The United States military has a longstanding defense relationship with Egypt that goes back many, many years,” he said.

Russia’s Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov called the information “another hoax.”

“It looks like another hoax, of which there are plenty now. This is how you should treat such publications,” Peskov said in response to a question from a reporter on the report.

CNN reached out to the Egyptian Foreign Ministry for comment.

Highly classified Pentagon documents leaked online in recent weeks have provided a rare window into how the US spies on allies and foes alike, deeply rattling US officials, who fear the revelations could jeopardize sensitive sources and compromise important foreign relationships.

Many of the documents, which US officials say are authentic, had markings indicating that they had been produced by the Joint Staff’s intelligence arm, known as J2, and appear to be briefing documents.

Egypt has publicly voiced muted opposition to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. It has supported United Nations resolutions condemning the war, including a call in February that Moscow “immediately, completely and unconditionally withdraw all of its military forces from the territory of Ukraine and called for a cessation of hostilities.”

The country’s economy has been damaged by the conflict, with Egypt relying heavily on grain exports from the two countries.

At least 44 civilians killed in two separate attacks in Burkina Faso

In two separate strikes on villages in northern Burkina Faso, at least 44 civilians were killed, according to local authorities.

Rodolphe Sorgho, the local governor, denounced terrorists for the “despicable and barbarous” attacks without mentioning any specific organization.

Sorgho issued a statement in which he expressed his “sincere sympathies to the grieving families and wishes for the wounded’s quick recovery.”

There were little further information available about the attacks, although a resident of one of the villages told AFP that late on Thursday, “a great number of terrorists” attacked, and gunshots could be heard all through the night.

One of the most impoverished nations in the world, Burkina Faso has emerged as the focal point of atrocities committed by jihadists affiliated with the Islamic State and al Qaeda.

The violence began in neighboring Mali in 2012 but has since spread across the arid expanse of the Sahel region south of the Sahara Desert.

Large areas of the north and east of Burkina Faso have become ungovernable since 2018. Millions have fled their homes, fearing further raids by gunmen who frequently descend on rural communities on motorbikes. Thousands have been killed.

Ghana’s inflation drops to 45% in March 2023

Ghana’s inflation for March 2023 has fallen sharply to 45%. This was influenced by some deflation recorded by the Food and non-alcoholic beverages group.

The drop is significant due to the level of increase recorded by inflation a few months ago, after it declined to 52.8 % in February 2023.

According to Government Statistician Prof. Samuel Kobina Annim, the fall shows the ongoing downward trend of inflation.

Only a few sub-groups recorded inflation during the period. The Western North region recorded the highest rate of inflation whilst the Volta region was the least.

  • Putin plans to make it more difficult for Russians to avoid being drafted

Putin plans to make it more difficult for Russians to avoid being drafted

The likelihood that Vladimir Putin would order a new round of mobilization for Moscow’s conflict in Ukraine has increased as he prepares to sign a law making it harder for Russians to avoid military conscription.

In addition to traditional letters, the law would permit internet distribution of military call-up documents. It would also prohibit those who must serve in the military from traveling abroad.

Following a botched order in September that led to a large number of Russians fleeing the country, Russian officials have refuted claims that the bill paves the way for a new round of mobilization.

But the strict new rules make it harder and more difficult for Russian men to avoid an order should it be made. Under the bill, the Kremlin would consider Russians notified from the moment they receive a summons, even if they haven’t seen the call-up, and would then ban them from leaving Russia.

The bill passed through its third reading in the lower chamber of Russia’s parliament Tuesday. It is now set to be approved by the upper chamber, the Federation Council, on Wednesday, and finally signed into law by Putin; both steps are considered a formality.

Asked during a regular call with reporters if the Kremlin is concerned that the proposed law, if passed, would trigger another wave of mass exodus of Russians, spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said: “Absolutely not. It has nothing to do with mobilization, it has to do with military registration.

“There is no second wave,” Peskov said after being pressed further to respond to rumors of new attempt at mass mobilization.

The initial effort in September was greeted by chaos, as scores of Russians headed to the border to avoid being sent to fight. Protests also erupted in ethnic minority regions, and some military enlistment offices have been set on fire. The original announcement also sparked rare anti-war demonstrations across Russia.

Officials said the draft’s target of recruiting 300,000 personnel had been met by late October, and brought the drive to an end.

Currently, conscription documents in Russia must be hand-delivered by the local military enlistment office or through an employer. The new bill makes an electronic summons – uploaded to a government portal called Gosuslugi – equal to the traditional method, and does not take into account whether it has been read.

Though the Kremlin has been quick to downplay the significance of the move, its provisions and timing are convenient for a military bogged down in stalemate in its ground campaign in eastern Ukraine, after months of grinding combat which has bled their manpower and weaponry.

Western officials last week told CNN they believe Russia has a problem generating “trained military manpower.”

“[Russia has] acknowledged that they needed 400,000 more troops and that’s not just for the conflict [in Ukraine], but also to fulfill new formations which are going to be put on the new border with NATO and Finland,” the officials said in a briefing on Wednesday, answering a question from CNN.

“How they generate that is unclear at the moment,” the officials added, noting that a new wave of call-ups would pose risks for Moscow. “Whether the population can sustain another round of mobilization and whether the Kremlin actually wants to test the population’s resilience to that it is unclear at the moment, but the fact they haven’t done would indicate to us that they have some concerns about that.”

  • We’ll match NPP boot for boot – NDC E/R chairman reacts to Bryan Acheampong’s comments

We’ll match NPP boot for boot – NDC E/R chairman reacts to Bryan Acheampong’s comments

The Eastern Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mark Oliver Kevor, has stated that reacted to ‘reckless’ comments by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Abetifi, Bryan Acheampong.

According to Oliver Kevor, the NDC is not intimidated by Bryan Acheampong’s statement that the New Patriotic Party will use all means necessary to win power in the upcoming elections.

He cautioned that the NDC is also prepared to use all means to win the vote.

Oliver Kevor, while speaking to party supporters during a tour by NDC flagbearer hopeful John Dramani Mahama to the Eastern region, said they are prepared to fight for victory in other ways if necessary.

“The NPP is self-aware that the time has come for John Mahama to be president, so it has resorted to intimidation.

“The NPP is threatening not to hand over power to the NDC in 2024. As regional chairman, I believe I have the support of other executives at various levels, and so I say we will also devise any means to snatch power from the governing NPP to John Mahama. We are ready as a party to match the NPP boot for boot,” he said.

Bryan Acheampong’s comment has been met with criticism from opposition parties, who accused the NPP of seeking to undermine the democratic process of the country.

Bryan Acheampong is on record as saying the governing New Patriotic Party will do everything within its means to win the 2024 general elections.

According to him, the NPP is not ready to hand over power to the NDC; therefore, his party will go to the election fully prepared.

He stated that the NPP has the men to match the opposition boot for boot during the 2024 polls.

Addressing party faithful after a health walk through the principal streets of Mpraeso on Saturday, April 8, 2023, Bryan Acheampong stressed that “We will show NDC that we have the men if they want to do intimidate, harass us or do anything foolish during the 2024 elections…It will not happen that we will hand over power to NDC. We’ll use any means for NPP to stay in power.”

Former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi diagnosed with leukemia

On Thursday, it was revealed that Silvio Berlusconi, the former Italian prime minister and head of the Forza Italia party, has been diagnosed with leukemia.

The 86-year-old lawmaker has non-acute cancer, according to a statement from Milan’s San Raffaele Hospital, which also noted that he had had the illness “for some time.”

Following a stay in the hospital the week prior for lung issues, Berlusconi was admitted to the hospital on Wednesday.

The hospital claimed in a statement that President Silvio Berlusconi was now receiving treatment for a lung infection while receiving intensive care, adding that physicians had now also determined that he had leukemia.

It added there is a “therapeutic strategy in place” for Berlusconi’s treatment.

The controversial media tycoon has served three stints as Italy’s prime minister, most recently between 2008 and 2011, before being banned from politics for six years following a conviction for tax fraud.

Berlusconi returned to frontline politics in 2022 when he won a seat in Italy’s Senate, representing the northern municipality of Monza.

He was separately hospitalized last week for “routine checks,” his spokesman told CNN without providing further details.

In 2021 he was hospitalized for treatment for the symptoms of long Covid-19, according to the press office of his Forza Italia party. He also spent time in the hospital the previous year after contracting the coronavirus, and has had a number of other health concerns, including a 2016 heart surgery to replace an aortic valve.

  • King Charles backs studies on the relationship between the British monarchy and slavery

King Charles backs studies on the relationship between the British monarchy and slavery

The UK’s Guardian newspaper on Thursday reported that King Charles III of Britain has expressed his support for research into the British monarchy’s historical connections to transatlantic slavery after it published a document that shows what experts claim is proof of a stake in a slave-trading business owned by King William III.

The Guardian published the document as part of an investigation into the royal family’s past involvement in the slave trade. According to the newspaper, the document reveals a transfer of £1,000 worth of shares in the slave-trading Royal African Company from 17th-century slave trader Edward Colston to William III in 1689.

Colston was the company’s deputy governor. In 2020, anti-racism protesters famously toppled a statue of the slave trader in Bristol, southwest England, while demonstrating in solidarity with the US Black Lives Matter movement. The document reported by the Guardian was found in archives by Dr Brooke Newman, a historian at Virginia Commonwealth University, on a research trip to London in January, according to the newspaper.

A spokesperson for Buckingham Palace told the Guardian that this was a subject that the King “takes profoundly seriously.”

The statement added that the royal household would support the project by offering access to the royal collection and the royal archives, the Guardian reported.

Though the palace has not responded to CNN’s request for comment on the document, a spokesperson told the Guardian in a statement that King Charles supported a research project undertaken by historian Camilla de Koning at Manchester University, and co-sponsored by Historical Royal Palaces (HRP), which manages several of royal sites, looking into the monarchy’s links to the slave trade.

“This is an issue that His Majesty takes profoundly seriously,” the spokesperson said to the Guardian, pointing to comments made by the King at a Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Rwanda last summer.

“I want to acknowledge that the roots of our contemporary association run deep into the most painful period of our history,” he said in June.

“I cannot describe the depths of my personal sorrow at the suffering of so many, as I continue to deepen my own understanding of slavery’s enduring impact.”

  • 1,200 migrants escorted by Italian Coast Guard boats in the Mediterranean Sea

1,200 migrants escorted by Italian Coast Guard boats in the Mediterranean Sea

In the course of a significant operation in a location where migrant numbers have increased over the past year, the Italian Coast Guard was on duty on Tuesday escorting two boats in the Mediterranean Sea carrying 1,200 migrants.

Alarm Phone, a volunteer-operated hotline, said that emergency personnel were rushing to save 400 migrants from a barge that had run out of gasoline.
Later on Monday, the Coast Guard informed CNN that it was escorting a different vessel with 800 migrants.

“Due to the prohibitive sea conditions, the Peluso ship, the Diciotti ship and the Coast Guard patrol boats are escorting the two units, in difficulty since yesterday, with migrants on board,” the Coast Guard said on Twitter. “The ships, carrying 400 and 800 migrants, got into trouble in rough seas on Monday.”

Alarm Phone said in a tweet earlier that it had spoken to passengers at 10.56 a.m. local time (4.56 a.m. ET), describing the situation on board as “dramatic,” with the boat starting to leak. “They report several medical emergencies, water filling the vessel and no fuel left. We have informed the authorities,” Alarm phone said.

The coast guard is traveling next to the boat en route to Italy because an escort is “safer” than attempting to rescue those on board in poor weather, said Felix Weiss, a spokesman for Sea-Watch International, a German organization that runs search and rescue operations in the central Mediterranean.

The migrants had been stranded along an immigration route between Italy and Malta that NGOs have warned is perilously dangerous.

The boat with 400 migrants departed from Tobruk, Libya, and had been at risk of capsizing with water in the hull, according to Alarm Phone. The service also said many on board required medical attention, including a child, a pregnant woman and a disabled person.

The Italian Coast Guard also said Monday that more than 1,700 migrants had arrived on the Sicilian island of Lampedusa in the last 48 hours. Lampedusa, the closest Italian island to Africa, is a major destination for migrants seeking to enter European Union countries.

Every year, tens of thousands of migrants fleeing war, persecution and poverty risk the treacherous route in search of safety and better economic prospects. In many cases, their vessels are overcrowded and unfit for the journey, and the need to rescue migrants on board often leads to disputes between countries about who should take them in.

More than 28,000 migrants have arrived in Italy so far this year, according to the country’s Interior Ministry – a significant surge compared to recent years. The number of migrants arriving in Italy this year are the highest seen in the country since 2017, according to figures by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

Most arrivals have journeyed from the Ivory Coast, Guinea, Bangladesh, Tunisia and Pakistan.

  • NDC parliamentary flagbearer hopeful drags Dr Jones Mensah to appeals committee

NDC parliamentary flagbearer hopeful drags Dr Jones Mensah to appeals committee

Dr. Senanu Djokoto, a parliamentary aspirant in the upcoming Keta NDC primary, has petitioned the appeals committee concerning the clearance of Dr. Emmanuel Jones Mensah, another aspirant, to contest.

Dr. Djokoto said he considered it an error by the vetting committee that Dr. Jones Mensah had met the mandatory requirements of Regulation 2.1(III) of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Guidelines for clearing parliamentary candidates for the 2024 general election.

The guidelines provide that a person desirous of contesting the position of parliamentary candidate “shall be an active member of the party in the constituency for not less than four years… pending the date of filing their nominations.”

Dr. Djokoto, in his petition sighted by the Ghana News Agency, said he found the committee’s decision to accept a letter from Dr. Mensah distancing himself from fraudulent registration conduct at Ashiaman untenable.

“I also find the vetting committee’s investigation into the alleged Ashaiman membership of the aspirant inconclusive, as no effort was made by the committee to authenticate the said alleged membership,” he said.

Dr. Djokoto said he had dutifully served the NDC in the Keta Constituency and was aware that most members and executives valued truth, honesty, and integrity, hence the need for a fair and just resolution of the matter.

Any decision on Dr. Jones Mensah’s legibility or otherwise “may adversely affect me as a candidate in the election,” he said.

“Under the circumstances, I believe that it will be prudent for the appeals committee to lay this matter to rest to forestall any legal tussle that can arise from same.”

I don’t buy ‘fake streams’ for my artists – Don Jazzy

Nigerian producer, Michael Collins Ajereh who is popularly called Don Jazzy has reacted to suggestions that he buys “fake streams” to boost his signees’ songs on digital streaming platforms using “streaming farm”.

This comes after the music executives and other record label mates were called out on social media by fans for using streaming farms to manipulate stream numbers in favor of their artists.

But in a recent interview, the Mavin boss declared that there was no such thing as “streaming farm”.

He urged up-and-coming artists not to be deceived by the speculations of an existing streaming farm that can boost stream numbers.

He admonished them to work harder.

Don Jazzy said: “All these side talks of there is a form of streaming farm somewhere, makes you become lazy. Go and create beautiful music and do all you need to do to market your songs.

“Don’t sit down there and be assuming ‘this person is getting here because there’s a streaming farm somewhere’. Trust me, it’s just going to be affecting you. You will be thinking that it’s unattainable. You can not get it. Ogbeni, you are doing yourself a disservice.”

“There’s no goddamn f*cking streaming farm. Or I don’t know whether people have it. But take it from people like us that are succeeding, that are at the forefront. I’m telling you that there’s no goddamn streaming farm. It doesn’t make any sense. If there’s a streaming farm why am I not buying it for my artists that are not winning?” he quizzed.

  • Information in the leaked Pentagon documents is false – South Korea

Information in the leaked Pentagon documents is false – South Korea

South Korea said on Tuesday that information in the leaked confidential Pentagon documents that appeared to be based on private discussions between senior South Korean security officials is “fabricated,” but did not elaborate.

Due to claims that they reveal the extent of American eavesdropping on significant regional allies, the documents have become a major problem in South Korea.

The repercussions occurs as South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol prepares to travel to the US for an official state visit on April 26. Joseph Biden, the president of the United States, will receive him.
The visit will coincide with the two nations’ 70th anniversary of their shared security relationship.

One document released in the leak suggests South Korean officials were concerned ammunition sold to the US could be diverted to Ukraine, potentially violating the country’s policy of not supplying lethal aid to countries engaged in conflict.

Another document cites information relating to South Korea as coming from a “signals intelligence report,” or intelligence gathered through the interception of communication signals.

In a statement, the office of South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol said allegations the US had penetrated the country’s official communication channels were “an absurd false suspicion.”

The statement said South Korean defense chief Lee Jong-sup held phone talks with his US counterpart Lloyd Austin Tuesday morning, during which they agreed that “a considerable amount of the documents were fabricated.”

The statement did not specify whether the two sides believe that only the parts about South Korea are fabricated, or the documents in general.

South Korea’s Defense Ministry said the call took place at the request of Austin. During the call, the US Secretary of Defense explained recent media coverage of the leak and said the US would closely communicate with South Korea on this issue, according to the statement.

CNN has reached out to the US Department of Defense for comment, and for a readout of the call. A Pentagon spokesman confirmed that the call happened but would not offer any additional details, saying only that a US readout would be released soon.

CNN has reviewed 53 leaked documents, all of which appear to have been produced between mid-February and early March.

Many of the documents, which US officials say are authentic, had markings indicating that they had been produced by the Joint Staff’s intelligence arm, known as J2, and appear to be briefing documents.

Asked about the validity of the documents, National Security Council Coordinator for Strategic Communications John Kirby told reporters at a White House press briefing Monday afternoon, “we know that some of them have been doctored,” but that he didn’t want to “speak to the validity of all the documents.”

“We’re still working through the validity of all the documents that we know are out there,” Kirby said.

Pressed on if the US believes that some of the documents are valid, Kirby said the administration “cannot speak to the veracity and the validity of any of those documents at this point.”

Kirby added later there was, “no excuse for these kinds of documents to be in the public domain. They don’t deserve to be in the public domain. They deserve to be protected. So, we’re going to get to the bottom of this,” but he said, “we need to be careful speculating right now.”

The revelations have led South Korean opposition lawmakers to suggest the US had wiretapped the South Korean presidential office, which had moved from the Blue House to the Yongsan Presidential Office in Seoul last May.

The claims of wiretapping were denied by the South Korean presidential office.

“We clearly state that the suspicion of wiretapping the Yongsan Presidential Office is an absurd false suspicion,” the statement said.

“Unlike the Blue House where the president’s office, secretary’s office and security office were scattered, currently we are maintaining ‘iron security’ through an integrated security system and dedicated personnel,” the statement added.

South Korea is a major arms exporter and President Yoon announced last year plans to become one of the world’s top four weapons suppliers.

In July, the country signed a deal to supply Poland with almost 1,000 K2 tanks, more than 600 pieces of artillery and dozens of fighter jets. And in November, a US defense official told CNN that Washington intends to buy 100,000 rounds of artillery ammunition from South Korean arms manufacturers to provide to Ukraine.

On Monday, the presidential office said South Korea’s policy of not supplying lethal aid to countries at war remains unchanged.
